Re: BOOKS
Sorry to be so long in replying; I've been out of the country. The
current series of books runs, in order of publication: Thunday,
Thequal, Amperthand, Doth and Fifth. Verbal Control is also still in
print. Most of my earlier publications (e.g., the Color Series) are no
longer available. In October, Stephen Minch will publish a hardcover
book of 60 of my card creations, mostly from out-of-print sources, a
few previously unpublished. All have been rewritten and have new
illustrations by Ton Onosaka.

Re: JAPAN
Dante: just returned from Japan today. Your dad's review will be much
more complete, of course, but I can tell you that it was a really nice
gathering, with some excellent talent. First day began with a stage
contest; frankly, very weak. First gala was MC'd by Setsuko Hanajima.
Acts: Johnny Hirose (fast-paced manip), Mac King, Shintaro Fujiyama
(illusions, Japanese style). 2nd half: Minako Hanajima (charming act
with bubbles), Setsuko Hanajima (comedy audience participation
routine), myself, then Peter Samelson to close.
Second night's gala: Michael Weber MC'd. Maki Kitami (western
style manip), Tomo Maeda (clever new act with rope & paper), Stan
Allen, Yuka (FISM award-winning Japanese style act with fans). 2nd
half: Michael Weber, Juan Tamariz, comedy by the Napoleons to close.
Third night's gala: I MC'd. Mahka Tendo (FISM award-winning card
manip), Kenichi Kuroki (offbeat New Wave audience participation), Dr.
Sawa (lovely rope sequence), Jade. 2nd half: Fukai & Kimika (new act,
Japanese style, with a brand new illusion), Avner (doing 30 minutes --
standing ovation), finally Tommy Wonder (another standing ovation).
Lectures were by Michael Weber, Juan Tamariz, Hiro Sakai, Mac
King, Stan Allen, Peter Samelson, plus a new historical lecture by
Stephen Minch. Close-up performers: John Kennedy, Tommy Wonder, Michael
Weber, Mac King, Toyohisa Saikawa, Hiro Sakai, Johnny Hirose, Richard
Kaufman.
Hope I didn't leave anyone out. The convention ran August 10-12,
but I stayed an extra week to do some performances at a luxury hotel.

Re: JERRY ANDRUS ARTICLE
While attending the Abbott's Get Together a couple of weeks
ago, I met a couple, who after they found out I had lived in
Eugene, Oregon, started asking questions about Jerry Andrus and
his House of Chaos. While talking about Jerry, they mentioned
that he had written in his article that the solution to his "box
impossible" would be printed in a future issue of Genii, but that
it hadn't appeared in any subsequent issue. After checking, I
found that they were corrected. I'm sure it's just an oversight
on Jerry's part. In case others are asking you the same
question, you might mention to them that the secret to the box
was illustrated in the April, 1985, Smithsonian magazine.
The Get Together was a lot of fun. I was surprized by how
many well known magicians attend as well as participate in the
affair. In my opinion, Jay Marshall, (Jeff?) Hobson, Harry
Blackstone and Norm Nielsen were the hits of the public shows.
Also, the Stunt Johnson Theater (Hank Moorehouse's son is a
member) scored quite well on the special Saturday afternoon
benefit show. The Not Just for Senior Citizens Lunch, was
outstanding this year with Hobson serving as it's m.c.

Just want to publicly thank our SYSOP David Lichtman for informing me
of a program in the F)ile SubSystem that I successfully !!! Downloaded
to make the CURSER "GIGANTIC" and BLINKING on my NEC UltraLite Laptop.
That was killing me with TEXT EDITING -- I couldn't see the curser.
This file really does it. Actually it will improve ANY computer, screen
size, you name it. The file name is UNBLINK20.ZIP and using PKUNZIP it
worked first time like a charm. I then LapLinked it to the Laptop
computer and there it is. It is Memory Resident, so you need to type
UNBLINK /B1 (OR OTHER VERSIONS OF /switches for various blink speeds (1

Board that you should download. In PROCOMM, after you select a
file from the F)iles section (off the menu) you hit the Page Down
Key, and select ASCII as the protocall. Then name the file,
follow PROCOMM instructions and the file will come to you. The
first is: PASSPORT.TXT This is about a 12 page manual on how
to use MAGIC! The other file is called: MAGIC.TXT This give you
the first 100 messages on the bulletin board. Reading these first
messages is very interesting. Will be in touch before I come up
to Las Vegas next trip. Right now I plan to drive as I have
events on two Consecutive weekends. I might zip to L.A. for a
coupel of days in between. Not sure yet. Will be at the Gold
Coast with the team (am comp there so no problem) then stay one
night in Beatty and back to Gold Coast. Reason we stay in Beatty
is the race starts in Pahrump, goes up through Beatty and we have
to be out there to take pix at 6:00 am, so it is easier to be
there rather than get up at 4 and drive from the Strip! Later.

I just received a tape I ordered at the Abbott's Get Together
called "Memories of Magic". It is a video tape of a
retrospective slide presentation given at the Get Together
several years ago. It has candid and performance pictures of
many magicians that have participated in the Get Together over
the years. Among the slides is a picture of a person that looks
a lot like you. It appears you have a cigarette in your hand
that is attached to a reel held in your mouth. If indeed it is

"The Magic of The Magic Castle" is a one hour special that will be on
C.B.S. next Friday August 31 at 10:00 p.m. It's listed in the T.V.
guide as "Magic Castle" (original, huh). This is the first special shot
at the Magic Castle dealing with the Magic Castle. Performing will be:
Lance Burton, Jonathan Neal Brown, Scott Cervine, Brian Gillis,
Goldfinger & Dove, Kevin James, Paul Kozak, Tina Lenert, and Johnny Ace
Palmer. Hosted by Peter Scolari from The Bob Newhart Show as a ghost.
Don Damaskin who overseas the technical toys at the Castle said they
totally revamped many of the rooms to give an erie flavor and at Four
at any rate, you may want to set your V.C.R.'s it was just filmed
about two months ago so all the magic is most recent.

Re: CIG THROUGH QUARTER
JUST THOUGHT THAT I WOULD LET YOU KNOW ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF BUSINESS
REGARDING THE CIG THROUGH QUARTER. I AM REALLY HAPPY WITH THE TECHNIQUE
THAT M. AMMAR SHOWS ON HIS MAGIC CASTLE VIDEO AND IN HIS THIRD NATIONAL
TOUR NOTES. YOU USE A PENCIL THROUGH QUARTER. THE SWITCHES ARE CLEAN
AND YOU CAN END WITH A JAY SANKEY ROUTINE CALLED "SMASHED" AND USE THE
"SOLIDIFICATION" PART OF THE ROUTINE WHERE A PUNCHED QUARTER IS GLUED
TO AN IDENTICAL PENCIL AND THE ILLUSION IS "SUSPENDED" IN TIME SO
PEOPLE CAN HANDLE THE EFFECT. THESE CAN ALSO BE MADE AND HANDED OUT AS
"CALLING CARDS" IF YOU GET PERSONALIZED PENCILS. AT ANY RATE, USE
PERSONALIZED PENCILS SO YOU CAN LEAVE SOMETHING FOR THEM. HOPE THIS
HELPS.

Holy Cow... who took that pic? OK, it was me. It was taken during one
of my lectures. I do an effect where I have a reel IN MY MOUTH, the
line runs into a cigarette pack, attached to a dummy cig made of rolled
up paper with a nail at the end (glued in) to attach the nylon thread.
The cigarette then "on command" JUMPS out of the pack into my mouth!
There are various other bits, one way to do it in the middle of the act
(Pat Page uses that version) but mainly it is easiest to open all set
up as an MC Bit.

I phone Goshman, but his phone was "switched" to answer at the Magic By
Gosh" office instead of his home. And his son answered. His son did not
know who I was (that's OK) and said, "I am new to magic, and I hope to
learn all I can and dad has given me the business to run. I want to get
it going strong, I don't plan to expand, but to just do the best job I
can at keeping it going as good as possible." He suggested I call again
some time and I just haven't followed up. I understand he is not doing
the greatest, but only hearsay. His son didn't really want to talk
about it with me, as he didn't know who I was. He did say, somthing
like, "Hey, he is getting old, he's 70 now, etc. etc.""" Anyway, will

THE MAGIC NUMBER is 13! That means that when you want to view the list

type F and press the ENTER key) and then type L;13 (the
letter L followed by a semi-colon [;] followed by the number 13) and
press the ENTER key. I hope to get rid of the extra step and the

Re: CARD FORCE
Forget where I read about this one, but it's kinda neat.
Force card on bottom of deck. Deck in left hand dealing position.
Pull down bottom (force) card with little finger, then move entire deck
forward in hand, retaining the force card in the palm. Bevel the deck
backwards (toward your body) so the end result is what appears to be
the entire deck "spread" lengthwise from the leading edge of the left
hand back toward the body. The force card is held in the palm under
the spread cards. Allow the suck, er, spectator to draw as many cards
from the bottom of the spread and replace on the top as he likes.
Square up (thereby replacing the force card) and turn the deck face
toward him saying "this is the card you chose". Don't say "of your own
free will"...that's like a kid returning from the kitchen and saying
out of the blue "I didn't have any candy". You know right away the kid
did, and your audience will know you've done the move.
Have fun with it!

Re: MEMORY "TEST"
Just saw an interesting thing on TV...a program selling a memory
system. In it, a man offered a deck of cards to another of the panel
members to shuffle. He got the deck back, cut it, then fanned and
offered it to the host for a card selection. The host set the card
aside, face down, showing it to no one. The demonstrator then ran
through the deck very quickly, claiming to memorize each card as he
sighted it. Again, this was done very quickly. He saved the last two
cards of the deck(not looking at them), then said"I don't remember
seeing..." and named the three cards. The last two are named first,
then the selected card. Interesting, eh? Sounds like fair shuffle,
glimpse the bottom card, classic (or other fan) force, then buildup &
reveal. The last two cards could be sighted during the rapid turning
over of the cards from the left hand dealing position. It cam across
quite well, but anyone with some magical knowledge is bound to perk up
when a "demonstration using playing cards" is mentioned! Dave Magnenat

Re: DOWNLOADING
Jeff, maybe I can help. YEDID.ZIP is a compressed "package" that
includes both a short printed message and a computer program. The
program is written in BASIC and cannot be printed directly; it is
designed to run on an IBM/clone computer just like any other program.
The "ZIP" at the end of the filename means that it has been compressed
and packaged. It is sort of like sending several things in a single
envelope. The use of ZIP (and a few other programs such as ARC and
LHZ) for file transfers is done for two reasons. 1) by putting several
related files together in one "envelope" it assures the user of getting
all of the different parts, and, 2) since it is compressed, the time it
takes to send it from MAGIC! to your computer is much shorter.
In order to use a ZIPped file, once you have downloaded it you have to
"UNZIP" it. You need a special program, named PKUNZIP.EXE to do that.
PKUNZIP.EXE can also be downloaded from MAGIC! I'll try to put some
directions for unzipping together during the next couple of days.
Does that help so far?

Re: HUMMERACLE
For anyone that is interested, I've written a small,
simple program to practice Max Abrams' excellent trick,
Hummeracle, from the latest issue of Genii. I often write
such programs to help me practice. They usually consist of
little more than random number generators for cards, as is
the case with this program.
Anyway, the program is uploaded as HUMMERAC.EXE. The
program is fairly straight-forward provided you know the
trick. If you have the March 1990 issue of Genii and have
read the description, you shouldn't have any problems using
the program. (And if you don't have the March issue of
Genii, what are you waiting for. Otherwise this program
won't do you much good.)
To use the program, basically just follow the sequence of
the menu. That is, have three cards removed from the deck
(menu item 1); have the spectator select one and switch the
other two (item 2); mix the cards (items 3, 4, and 5 as
needed); have spectator choose one of the three cards and
turn it face up (items 6 and either 7, 8, or 9); and,
finally, turn the other cards face-up if necessary (items 7,
8, and/or 9). Selecting menu item 10 will reveal the chosen
card and item 11 will quit the program. Of course you need
not quit, simply go back to item 1 and continue practicing.
If you've read the article, this should be clear.
Please note, the program is not very fancy or smart. I
wrote it in about 15 minutes. I wasn't try to write
anything of professional quality, just something to help me
practice an effect that I think is very good but needs some
practice to present effectively. If anyone has any problems
or suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. Hope you find this
useful.

Re: T.V. MEMORY TEST
What you saw was a 1/2 hour "info-commercial" put together by none
other than Harry Lorayne. The guy doing the card memory stunt was
Hiawatha Johnson, a well-known close-up worker in NYC. I've seen him
work at Tannen's Jubilee. Anyway, the effect that he did could also be
accomplished with another method...one that I think would be cleaner.
He was using Bicycle Rider-Backs...it could have been a Ted Lesley
deck. The cards could then be shuffled as much as the spectator
desired. The bad thing about the whole show is that Lorayne padded the
entire panel of "memory experts" with magicians. In addition to
Hiawatha, there was Bob Elliot and Mark Sicher, whose magic was just
featured in an entire issue of "Apocalypse." (Now there's an
interesting coincidence!) All in all, it's bad for magic for magicians
(especially those who are as well-thought of as Lorayne) to use magical
techniques to deceive. Regardless of the method, I think we both agree
that the "memory test" card stunt was a trick! It's a shame!

Re: T.V. MEMORY TEST
Sorry I didn't SEE it. But, the memory stuff is real. I had a friend
that could have someone take half the deck at random. He would look at
the remaining half and could tell you what cards you retained. He was
Frank Shields, a great cardman bartender. He has since passed away.
Also, there are other short versions that take little time. It is all
in Mnumonics (spelling?)... Recently in Las Vegas Geno Munari showed me
how you can have someone take ANY card, you then very quickly deal
throught the pack face up, counting. Like in BlackJack counting and you
know the value of the card immediately. A little fishing or one look
thru the deck to see which suit of the value is missing and you have
it. No forcing, no method...Just counting! Adios.

Re: T.V. MEMORY TEST
Dear Pete: That casting out 10's to clock the deck is a pretty old
idea. Saw it recently in yetecently in yet another magic magazine.
Cornelius had it in the Linking Ring in the mid-1970's and that seemed
to get everyone excited about it again. Lorayne did a booklet on it in
the late 1970's called THE EPITOME LOCATION, then Fulves did one called
THE SHAMROCK CODE AND PARALLEL PRINCIPLE which he followed with another
called PARALLEL LINES. You might also want to check Ken Beale in an
early "Ibidem" for the concept, based on Jordan. Our on-line friend
Max Maven does or did some great stuff with it.
I do7't know if you know it, but I used to entertain with Frank behind
the bar and we were close drining buddies for a long time. Yes, the
deck memorization was real, but it was far more than just a simple
memory thing. The deck was distributed between four spectators. The
climax came when three of the four spectators held one card each, and
one spectator held 6 cards. Each held one card of afour of a kind, and
the last spectator was found to be holding a straight flush! That was,
for instance, the routine Frank performed at the end when he worked the
Magic Cellar. As you'll realize, there was a bit of a set-up that
stayed through the two riffles! The rest of it was a straight thing
and you really did have to memorize the portion of the deck you had and
then recall what everyone else held. The routine, from start to finish
never took longer than five minutes and it was STRONG. I recorded our
conversations on the handling etc, on audio tape during several
session. Frank really was a memory wiz -- he used to do the Orville
Meyer Magic Square routine behind the bar. We once did a joint lecture
for a college psychology class. Frank did the Meyer Square routine and
absolutely knocked the kids out. I wonder if you know this: Around
1977 I worked with Channel 2 in producing a special on local magicians.
Included Daryl, matt Corin,
t included Daryl, Matt Corin,
and Frank. Frank saw his old friend Demon Rum before the show and the
results were hilarious, but it turned out very well. At least some of
the routines were recorded for posterity. I also got a reasonably good
tape of Frank working in 1975 -- a session between Larry Jennings,
Frank and I shot after the Vernon lecture in Sacramento. Yup, the
Super Count is on tape. But, I also have Frank's complete explanation
of the routine on file, and I did learn it from him. But nobody could
do the routine like he did. Good memories, eh? Best, Jeff

Some day I gotta see that stufff. Yep, there are some truly GREAT

started doing his usual GREAT magic. Suddenly he looked at the old man
and recognised the Professor. Frank FROZE. Frank BROKE INTO TEARS. HE
COULDN'T BELIEVE VERNON WOULD GO TO THAT TROUBLE TO SEE 'HIM'!!! Then,
later there was a big fight in the bar. Frank was throwing guys over
the bar, guys were being hit with pool cues, but we paid no attention,
he just kept doing magic. We had to step over Knocked Out bodies
lahing about the floor! What an insane place. Let's be so glad we were
a part of that and a part of the memories!

Re: SUPERSAVER/HOSTEL TOUR
What Hostel Tour? To the FISM? I have hosted three trips to FISM
conventions and was SCREWED by the travel agents every time. One guy
sniffed the $ and when we got to Lausanne there were NO registrations
paid. My group had to sit in the back row of the upper balcony. And I
thought we had paid 2 years in advnance! Another had us do an overnight
channel crossing on a crummy boat with no hotel rooms booked... and NO
tickets for me and spouse. We had to con our way on the boat and then
buy a berth "after midnight" from the Purser! Another had the air
tickets backwards. We were in Brussells heading home via a stop to
change planes in London. The tickets read London, Brussells. Boy if you
don't think I raised a stink at the airport until the head of the
airline somehow got us to London in time to get the plane.

Re: MAGIC CASTLE TV SPECIAL
The ONLY real way to review this show is to see what the Nielsen
Ratings are. It is the first time, in my knowledge a "variety" type
magic show has been on in Prime Time since the old days when, I think
it was Garry Moore produced a few. I don't consider the Henning,
Copperfield shows "variety" magic shows.
I think the overall show was GREAT. However.... As much as I like Peter
Scolari, I just don't think his material worked. One friend told me "I
wish they had HUNG him in the opening!" Tsk, Tsk... a bit hard. When
you compare this with the "Secret Cabaret" it was far less graphically
produced... but that's OK. My guess is the Secret Cabaret (out of
London on the BBC) has 10 times the budget! Note: If you can ever get
a chance to see the Secret Cabaret DO IT... It is maybe the best
produced Magic I have ever seen on TV. Meanwhile... and I didn't take
notes... I really enjoyed the magic acts. James, Coby, Tina, all great
stuff and JUST ENOUGH... TV producers are smarter than magicians.
Magicians always want to do everything they know all the time. TV
producers grab the "choice hunk". Steve Spill's Mindireading Goose,
Golfinger and Dove 3-card routine is the BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN
THEM DO!!!!! Ace Palmer's cups, his best. Jonathan Neil Brown's Rings
A+, Scott Cervine -- I would like to have seen more from him. And Lance
was at his best! Kozak is one of my favorites, but I would like to have
seen him on the Palace Stage... I have a feeling the members of the
Castle will not recognize the Demographic make up of the audience and
their STANDING during the shows... but that doesn't matter... that, the
party atmosphere was great. Hey, why don't the members Dance in the
main room of the Castle??? It looked like the thing to do!!! This
reviewer gives most of it (The Magic) and A.

Dante made reference to a supersaver/hostel tour (in jest) in the
new Genii (Bagdad). I just got mine here on the east coast so am
reading it today. As far as the Magic Castle Special is concerned,
I've been thinking about it all day while we did some landscaping
around our studio while getting ready for our annual Labor Day Party.
By the way, come on over --
I'd been wanting to see Kevin James and Rudy Coby and wasn't
dissapointed. Kevin James was super. My wife ( who likes magic
probably because it gives me so much pleasure (passion)) said
"nice hair". I know that the kid who played the part of the ghost was
supposed to give it more mass appeal - but .... I will probably
pop the video tape of last nights show in the vcr when I get back
to the house and look at it again. I personally loved the show. The
chance to see some new performers. The two ring routine was a joy
to behold. truly lovely. Lance Burton, whom I worked with at Six Gun
Territory in Kentucky almost a decade ago was also a joy to watch.
The masked audience was somewhat "out there" but I for one am glad to
see CBS doing magic. I hope they'll do it every few months.--TC---

I understand and agree with your contention that manufacturers
or their Reps., and not dealers, be displaying at conventions to
avoid the inevitable product over-lap. However two questions
come to mind based on this contention.
1. Reps. and manufacturors can't cut out the retailers and sell
direct without creating problems within their distribution
channels.
2. How does it work at the I.B.M convention. Surely the dealers
are doing well enough to entice them to keep coming year after
year.
Maybe the answer is to restrict the dealers to a certain limited
quantity of featured items each that are on "special". However
some healthy competition should not be discouraged. Quite the
contrary!

Re: VARIETY MAGIC SPECIALS
Your comment that the Castle special was the first variety magic
special (i.e., not framed around a single star magician) since the
Moore shows, etc., is incorrect. You've forgotten such shows as the
Disney Kingdom special of less than two years ago; the "Magic With The
Stars" 2-hour package of five or six years ago; and more than half a
dozen such specials done for cable (such as the ones hosted by Dick
Cavett).
I can't agree with your assessment of the special, by the way. I
think the thing was shot rather well -- a few bad choices regarding
optimal display of the magic, but in general a good quality look.
However, acts were trimmed poorly, in most cases being cut off in an
abrupt fashion which undercut the applause (thus leaving the impression
that they were weaker than they actually were). Biggest fault: all of
the music -- which as you know in many cases was very carefully chosen
by the performers -- was replaced by "similar" music, all for the sake
of saving budget. Thus, you had some class acts being performed to the
equivalent of elevator muzak. Shameful.
Sound editing was also poor. I'm sure that Jonathan Neal Brown,
having practiced for years to get a silent link on the first phase of
his two-ring routine, was just thrilled to hear the "clank" edited in
on the tape...
All of the audience participation material suffered from the use of
an audience which was obviously made up of hired actors.
And, of course, the MC material by Scolari was dreadful.
Worst of all, as far as I'm concerned, was the shabby treatment of
the performers. Note that not one of the magicians got billing in
either the opening or closing credits. Combine this fact with the issue
of payment (despite this being a network special, all of the magicians
received scale) and you'll understand why quite a number of well known
performers decided to pass.

Re: VARIETY MAGIC SPECIALS
I guess I "wanted" to forget such shows as "Magic of the Stars" ,
etc. Didn't the Disney show feature S&R? Not tht it matters. I stand
corrected. I probably shouldn't have commented on the show as I was
watching it under dreadful conditions. Bobbi was trying out her NEW and
noisy vacuum cleaner and my TV set was out of whack. I agree with you
the music (when I could hear it) was low grade elevator-style!!! And
the ususal TV edits were weak, however I did like the content and the
time on screen of the performers for the most part. I would say the
strongest CONCEPT "for me" was the way Jack and Dove did the Giant 3
Card Monte. That is one of my all-time favorite effects. I can't recall
the performer's name, but about 25 years ago there was a young guy
who's entire act was that effect. He did it on stage with 3 chairs to
put the cards on. It was the STYLE, PATTER, ATTITUDE that he had that
was so good. Just like two Italian performers I saw in Europe in 1951
(that is dating me) that did the Passe Passe Bottles as a Gambling
effect, where the sucker was tring to bet where the bottle was. He
thought he had it won when he took "THE" bottle out of the tube when he
distracted the operator. He kept looking under his coat to see if he
still had the bottle, and kept increasing the bet. When the operator
lifted the tube and the bottle was there... it was the strongest
version of the bottles I have ever seen. The two guys were (my guess)
the Italian version of our Abbott and Costello. A great hunk. Hey, I
have strayed... so? Anyway, good to hear from you. Any word yet on the
ratings of the Castle Special? Scale? How much is that? I would really
like to know the Money paid. You can reply privately. Also, do you have

Re: VARIETY MAGIC SPECIALS
I just reviewed the tape of "The World's Greatest Magicians from The
Magic Castle." For the most part, the magicians, who, as Max Maven
pointed out, didn't even get credit, did a great job.
Peter Scolari will probably overcome his role. After all, Raymond Burr
was edited into the English language version of Godzilla and managed to
land other roles.
There were a few mixed messages throughout, as if the show was planned
by a committee, and I do wish they'd spent more on camerapeople and
extras and less on dry ice, but, on the whole, it was good to see
magic, good magic, on network television. And the opening animation
was terrific! Wonder if it was done on an Amiga computer?

No disagreement on Goldfinger & Dove. Their routine with "Giant Monte"
(it's the version made by Ton Onosaka) is terrific -- but it's even
stronger when done to the dub version of "Tricky Tricky" by Run DMC, a
perfect piece of music they searched long and hard for... which was
eliminated by this show.
It's no secret that scale for a production of this type is around
six hundred dollars.

Or you could invent Cigarette Penetration of Dollar Bill! I'd like to
see that one!
In addition to the scraping problem that Tabby mentioned, a hexagonal
pencil (necessary for Timothy Wenk's Misled) might show spaces since
the hole in the quarter is round and larger. A round pencil might
work, but then would be wrong for Misled.
The Pencil Penetration of the Dollar Bill is named "Misled" (and if you
believe Wenk's explaination of why, you should be in the audience) and
is available from multiple dealers. The direct address is Metempirical

Re: GYSPSY THREAD
Jim,
I've enjoyed playing with MINDSCAN.EXE. I've really blown away a
couple of people with it. I have one suggestion, instead of using the
actual number for the value consider having the program accept the
first two letters of the spelled-out name of the value. For example,
if the card is the seven of spades, instead of typing 7-S-N-D, type
S-E-S-D. This is a minute point and may not be worth the trouble --
just an idea.
Check the Feb. 1987 issue of Linking Ring for the "Gypsy Floss"
description.
I'm also interested in your new magazine. What do I need to do to

Re: GENE DE JEAN
Tabby,
Gene De Jean is still around and still working. He's also got some
of the funniest stories about his magical work experiences that I've
ever heard. The only time I've ever seen him work was at last year's
TAOM convention. He did his usual dramatic entrance, but the lighting
wasn't correct and instead of a dramatic walk-on, he had to feel his
way up onto the stage. It looked pretty bad. The rest of his
performance was very good. He finishes with an illusion that involves
removing a lady's midsection while she lies on a small table without
any box or such covering her. It is a very well done illusion.

As far as I know, the Gypsy thread with dental floss concept belongs to
a magician in Texas named Lonnie Chevrie Jr. He is a great guy and a

Besides being active as a magician I also enjoy to collect all kind of
magic on video.
This activity has become a hobby on its own, and in the past few years
I have collected ca. 400 video's, all with magic shows taken from TV
from all kind if countries.

Being a dutchie I have special interest for dutch magicians on video,
in perticular Fred Kaps. Unfortunately we lost this great performer
just before video became popular.
I just wonder if one of the Magic! members can help me with any Kaps
recordings from the US. I think about his appearances in the 60-70's.
.
In exchange I can offer various other Kaps recordings (like Kaps
session with Bro. J. Hamman) or let me know your wishes.
I can copy NTSC tapes (US TV format).

I was also surprised that they decided to close with Lefty -- but
rather pleased. This year's specials were handled by a new producer, as
you know, and it's nice to see that he did not feel obligated to close
with a large-scale act, but instead went for the intimacy of Jay's
routine. I've always felt that television, as an intimate medium, is
better served by such acts. It's ironic that illusionists get more
coverage on TV than any other type of magic, as I really think that
the television form is _least_ effective with that type of work.

I've looked through my library and see surpisingly little on how to
make the count convincing. A fair amount of what I do see is
contradictory (for example, should both hands move or should one hand
freeze). Living in the hinterlands I don't see many others attempt such
things. It's nice in that I'm forced to think, but seeing someone else

The two best exponents of the false count I ever saw were Fred Kaps and
Frank Shields -- sadly both deceased. You might look for Marlo's Super
Count in print somewhere. Doing it a million times and working toward
naturalness is the only way to go. Shields also had the most invisible
top change I had ever seen. He told me he would practice that one move
at least 20-minutes EVERY DAY. Jeff Busby can probably add to this
discussion. I think both hands should move. One thing Shields did
so well --at the critical moment-- was to angle the cards toward the
viewers EYES so they only saw the "END VIEW" of the cards.

Re: FALSE COUNTS (CARDS)
Most hand-to-hand false counts simulate the action of dealing.
Therefore, the optimum action in terms of psychologically setting up a
realistic frame of reference is for the hand holding the packet to
remain motionless, while the other ("dealing") hand moves forward for
each card, establishing focus.
Having said this, I must of course point out that rules such as
this are not hard and fast. Some of the best handlers of false counts
do not follow the above rule, but make their actions play naturally.
However, as a general rule I think the above is worth observing.

Hofzinser??? There's a book I don't have, but will have to find. This
isn't something I dreamed up, but heard of somewhere. The effect
literally blows people away especially if you can "steal" one of
their business cards a couple of days in advance, assuming it is
on quality paper and can be split. I just got a note from Richard
Hatch with his list of books. Maybe I can find a copy of his Hofzinser
translation somewhere..Mr. Busby, are you listening??----TC-----

Could be you're pulling my leg. Pretty funny. I had to read that one
a couple of times. Actually the pk is about 2.5 x 3.5 x 1 inch thick.
It is some type of alloy with the poles quite pronounced because of
it's power. Mine is mounted on a lever arrangement under the table in
my dining room with a string with a loop in the end I can put my foot
through to raise the mechanism. It lowers itself by gravity. When you
bring the magnet into play it makes a cigarette stand on end under
a glass. By rapidly raising and lowering the pk you can sometimes make
a steel shim loaded match turn a flip unless a train is passing the
house.

I use what is known in Gambler's parlance as a "JOINT". It is a magnet
made of ceramic that is the size of a large cigarette pack. The ususal
setup is to have it strapped to your leg with an elastic knee-type pad.
tht way you manipulate it by moving your knee, etc. The dice, under a
cup, are manipulated OCCASIONALLY to make them either all aces or
sixes, depending on the way the magnet is positioned. This is also used
for theings like turning on the lightbulb for various mental and card
items. Bob Ostin's BEAM SHOT and other devices using reed switches. Bob
Swadling "Swadling Swindle" (inventor of magnetic shimmed coin magic)
had methods of increasing the distance a magnet would operate by
ataching mini magnets near the reed switches. It was his Dad that had
the magnet he didn't think the car would cross the tracks with.
Swadling is a very big guy in the scientific world in England and a
fabulous magician (his wife too). Adios.

Re: PK FACTOR
I do hope that you folks are keeping these giant PK (as well as other)
magnets FAR AWAY from your computers, diskettes, and other precious
magnetic media such as video tapes! Otherwise, you may get some
unusual (and very disturbing) phenomena that you did not plan on.
Seriously, I was in an office where they had a DOS diskette that they
used to pass around between the different computers (this was before
the days of hard disks). That morning the secretary decided that she
was tired of constantly hunting for the thing, so she stuck it to the
front of a filing cabinet with a big magnet! We supplied a new copy of
DOS and some suggestions on diskette storage.
You would be surprised, however, to find how many disguised magnets
there may be around your magnetic media. Cabinet door latches, for
example. And there is a new bracelet, supposed to be an "ancient
Chinese cure," that is composed of EIGHT magnets! I can hardly wait
for these to become popular!

You mean the car crossing the tracks is true!!! Evidentally the
pk is a "joint" as you describe it. I guess if you wore baggy
pants (which are in now) it would be easy to get away with. My
pk is covered with velvet so it won't "talk" when it comes into
contact with the table top. The effect is so good that I guess
the magicians (gamblers) using it just don't say much. I've been
experimenting with magnets in magic for 20 years and bought the
pk in 1985. I need to get the Edmond Scientific Co. catalogue
again and see what is new in ceramics. Aloha.

tape too. When I first brought the pk into the house I ran around
for a couple of fhours putting it first here then there because I
was afraid of the thing and what it could do to. I guess I could
put one on a lever under my desk and tell people I don't like to
just put their tape "right there" and I'll listen to it later.

Re: PK FACTOR
An easier way to use the thing is to strap (I usually use a ace
bandage) a piece of steel to my leg, that way there is no bluge, and
when in the process of sitting down, I place the magnet (which is in a
velvet bag, possibally used to carry cards) on my leg where the steel
plate is.. I usually select to place this whole arangement on the
inside of my right ankle instead of my knee.. This gives me slightly
better control and stability, all I have to do is cross my legs..
Also, if I remember my science correctly, if you place metal across
the poles of the magnet you will double the power.. Seems to work for
me..

Re: FALSE COUNTS (CARDS)
Thanks for the feedback. Isn't "SuperCount" an equivique style count?
The Marlo count from the "Cardician" (the one with the the left thumb
between until the last minute) seems the most comfortable to me. I like
to add noise (aka Francis Carlyle) and move the top packet forward to
provide shade for the card sliding back on top.
I've never seen Brother John Hammon (I haven't seen very many folks,
Iowa is sort of dry...). The plot that grabbed me most out of the
Kaufman book was the multiplying kings (I forget the title). That's
what got me interested in the subject. It comes of fair, but with
no where near the conviction that it ought to. I have much better luck
with the Victor 11 card trick then I do here (by the way, multiplying
kings should tack on quite well to a Kannibal Kards plot, though I
haven't dreamt up a really satisfying fusion).
Once started I started wondering about other plots, ie. six card
repeats and cards to pocket. I realize that all my counts tend to be
special purpose things; theres not much in the way of a general
technique. Part of the problem is my confusion about what exactly makes
a count effective (yes of course regular tempo and voice are good).
I suspect seeing Bro John, or Frank sheilds (can't) or anyone else who
has mastered the more subtle details would help a lot.
One problem with any count of a large number is that "regular tempo
and tone of voice" becomes real difficult (folks don't really count in
monotone or metronome styles). This leads me to wonder whether counts
ought to be done as batches of a particular number, ie. one two THREE,
four five SIX, seven eight NINE... Make sense???
Ahh.... online session... I can at least make it to CA via phone...

done with Dollar Bills, by Fred Kaps was one of the best pieces of
magic ever. The Frank Shields version of Marlo's Super Count was also
a genuine classic. Jeff Busby is probably the only person that now can
do the Shields version. Frand wound up with the ENTIRE deck under the
spectator's hand. Without knowing the routine, this makes no sense, but
believe me it was a priceless bit of business. ALL COUNTING, ELMSLEY,

In the P.K. kit I described before (from Chazpro) there is a

Really nice work, the rythmn seems to be the key. Regarding this and
other counts, Juan Tamariez suggests using a "clumped" count to cover
any actions. For example to Hamman count 7 cards (hiding the last 3),
he suggests counting: 1...2,3...4,5...6,7 - pausing slightly after 1,
3, and 5. This helps cover the actual switch.

All this magnet/tape/disk talk has me nervous. I have an enourmous
magnet somewhere in this room and I cannot find it. There are a number
of cardboard cartons stacked randomly that have a lot of my stuff
within each and no accurate labelling. Boy, what do I do. Aha, I have
it. Throw a handfull of small nails at the stack of boxes!

Re: MAGNETICS
Well, fun seekers. I did find my magnet! And guess what (OTHER
STUFF I THOUGH WAS LOST) I found stuck to it! The key to the
money box for my 1904 Caille Slot Machine, the keys to my
Goldston locked books and (after awhile looking for the 5th one)
the magnetic DICE that go with the "joint". The 5th one was
inside a dye tube! Now, where in the heck to you store this
behemoth? I guess I'll just keep it out of the office! Is the
book of ideas and the "kit" material on the market worth getting?
Can anybody here recommend some of the better stuff--effect-wise?
All I ever use mine for is a gambling dem, showing how to control
dice under a dice cup. Arkie told me how, at a bar, a 3rd person
(usually wife or galfriend) that appeared to be just a stranger
sitting nearby, would operate the gaff. The way he described it,
two guys would be getting into a dice game. The "mechanic" would
say, "here, lets use this ladies purse here (his partner) to
throw the dice against." It was all over. I don't know what game
they used this setup with, however. The best is with a cup as the
dice act pretty strange when they "roll over" like a trained dog,
so the cup acts as cover. Anybody interested in the gambling gaff
stuff should contact Geno Munari (on this BBS) as he is releasing
some more pretty strong (real stuff) on gambling scams via video
tape. Geno is an expert, and is the boss at the San Remo Hotel
and Casino in Las Vegas.

Re: UPLOAD OF ACE CUTTING ROU
Today I uploaded a text file describing an effect I perform regularly
and that's called Ace Cutting Mortale....
It's a spectacular cutting effect. A spectator freely cuts to a card
(say an ace.....) and you (Mr. Magic himself..) cut to the other 3
aces:
Ace 2 is cut while being blindfolded
Ace 3 is cut with your left hand (?????)
Ace 4 is cut by a spectator......he misses and you finally find the
last ace by counting down the value of the card the spectator cut to.
.
P.S.
I am also interested in the origin of the effect, I thought it came
originally from Marlo, can someone confirm that.
.
Thanks and a lot of fun....

Re: 30 SEC. CUPS & BALLS
Playing with my cups and balls (.....) I thought about the following
effect, that can be described as the "30 second cups and balls":
.
You table down 3 cups, and while lifting the cups, putting them on
one pile, and explaining it comes together with 3 balls below it,
the spectators remark only 2 balls are below the first 2 cups while
ball nr. 3 is missing. You look surprised look on the floor and say:
"OK since I have only 2 balls let's only use 2 cups as well".
Now you table down 2 cups, cup nr. 3 is gone!!
.
This part I have worked out, and found the vanish to be topit-able.
.
The intention is to have the 2nd cup to vanish as well, while a quick
production can follow in the last remaining cup. All should take place
in ca. 30 seconds to 1 minute.....any ideas, suggestions????
.
Bye,
Arnaud.

Re: 30 SEC. CUPS & BALLS
Here are some added ideas. You have the stack of cups. Lift one off to
right, one to left, then lift last cup and there are 2 balls. One cup
vanishes (your method with topit?) So, now you notice there is only ONE
ball left. Another cup vanishes. Now you go into a CHOP CUP routine? Or
you could use the Takagi effect where the cup is filled solid, nothing
can go inside. I also did a routine about 20 years ago where the large
lemon loads are accidentally (?) seen -- the spectators (these were all
magicians) SEE THE LOADS GO IN. They now feel bad for you. Poor man,
cannot hide the loads. But when I lifted the cups THERE WERE NO LEMONS
UNDER THEM. You might want to have some other kind of load also. Just
some ideas for you.

Re: MAGNETICS
I like dice routines but never used any gaffs. I learned how to stack
dice from reading a book! Boy did I throw dice all over the floor for
a week. This was when I was a high school kid and worked in a small
magic store in Brooklyn at night. I think it was Audley Walsh's book
but I never bought it, I used the one in the store. Now I use a couple
of jumbo dice and load one in the cup after I do a vanish of the stack
of dice. When I lift the cup I load the second jumbo. Then I demo how
to stack jumbo dice. That always gets a laugh because the two big dice
fill the cup. I lift it and sure enough they are stacked. I replace the
cup face down and palm a really giant die that is bigger than the cup.
For the finish I lift the cup and release the giant one on the table.
It always gets a good response.

Re: MAGNETICS
If you want to have some fun, switch in a stack of dice glued together.
Also you can load a stack of pennies. Just get a tube that will hold
the right number of pennies. Then wrap it with brown paper tape so it
fits into the cup. It should be a little snug. Load it in, then lift
carefully and you have a stack of pennies. I also have, somewhere a
gaff that has a rubber band inside a stack of hollow dice, so that when
you wind it, the TOP DIE spins slowly while the spectators look at it.
For the record. I have the Dice Cup that belonged to Fred Kaps, it was
made for him by Senator Crandall. Crandall was the best I ever saw at
the dice stacking. His book is great. I used to also like the vanish of
the dice (you shoot them across to your free hand) it is a good
surprise.

Re: 2SZZG?K
Here's a great coin trick taught to me over 20 years ago by Bev
Bergeron. The effect. Four coins are on the table. One by one
they are swept off the table into your left hand. No moves. No
delays and the left hand slams down to the table and the coins go
through the table and are caught from below in the right hand.
Want the moves? Read the next message!

Re: COINS
Method: Place four coins across the table, in front of you, along
the edge, about 3 inches in from the edge. Left hand is cupped,
near edge so that when you sweep the first coin (the one at your
left) off the edge it falls into your left hand. You repeat this
with coins number two and three. The DIRTY WORK. When you sweep
coin number four off the left hand contains three coins. As you
sweep the fourth coin, the two hands come closer together and
(THIS IS THE CRITICAL MOMENT) in fact when the fourth coin hits
the other three in the left hand, the left hand jerks upward,
just a fraction, and THROWS ALL FOUR COINS INTO THE RIGHT HAND,
WHERE THEY ARE FINGER PALMED. This is difficult to describe
without artwork, but if you play around with this you will
understand what is needed and can come up with the timing. What
is needed, is practice. An easy way to practice is to start with
the three coins already in position and just work on the final
toss/exchange. Probably the single most important thing in
performing this is rhythm. You must develop a rhythm. And it is
good to count, 1-2-3-4 as you sweep the coins. As soon as you
have finished the sweep/switch the LEFT HAND, IN CLOSED GRIP
(remember there are four coins in it) comes straight up, to
attract attention. Pause for just a beat... then move right hand
under table, slam left down and in your best Slydini impression,
saying "Look, look, look", right hand comes out and pours the
four coins to the table. Bev originally taught this to me with
Quarters, but I have done it with Halves and Silver Dollars. The
heavier coins seem to be easier to handle. Have fun. And let me
know if you try it and like it! P. Biro

Just a side note: To increase the power of any magnet, cover all
sides but the one that will face up with metal.. This will confine the

Re: MAGIC! MESSAGES - VOL. 2
The second set of MAGIC! messages - #500 (July 11, 1990) to #999
(Aug. 21, 1990) have been transfered to a downloadable file -
MAGIC-02.TXT. This means that you can now go to the file area,
download that file, and read the second volume of messages off-line.
For those who know how to use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing
files, there is a compressed version of this same file. It is
called MAGIC-02.ZIP and is about 1/2 the size of the full-text
version.
Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier for
you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the search for
new messages easier and faster.
For those of you who collect MAGIC! messages, we are investigating
the availability of leather-bound diskettes for a "deluxe" edition.

Re: MARKED COIN IN CARD
If I'm not mistaken, it was a _bill_ in card that Martin featured in
his lecture in the early 1970's. I recall that he used a chemical
capsule in an envelope to destroy the bill. The gag was that he put the
bill in the envelope (capsule already inside), then held the envelope
with a set of tongs "to prevent any mishap" -- and as he was talking
the envelope suddenly burst into flame, as he'd crushed the capsule
with the tongs.
A couple of years back, Ted Lesley came out with a marketed routine
in which a borrowed credit card was found within the layers of a
playing card. It involved a loader.

Playing around with the 4 Coin vanish I described earlier, I just found
it is EASIER to start sweeping off the right hand coin first, that way
when you get to the fourth and last coin, it puts you in a more natural

coins back into the right hand (secretly, of course). That was a case

Re: 5 CARD MENTAL FORCE
I have a question for everyone regarding Dai Vernon's 5 card mental
force using the KH, 7C, AD, 4H, and 9D. My main concern is how best to
present the effect. I had always thought that the best way was to
layout the cards and to mention to the spectator reasons for not
choosing each of the cards (e.g., "you might think I want you to take
the 7C because it is the only black one", etc.). Recently though I got
a chance to see the Revelations tape in which Vernon chastises Gary
Ouellet for doing just that. Vernon says DO NOT do the spectator's
thinking for him, but instead "strongly challenge" the spectator by
betting him $10 that you'll pick out the card he has mentally selected.
The spectator will then, wanting to trick you, be lead in his thinking
to the 4H.
Now if we look in the book "Early Vernon", the following presentation
is given: "Here are five cards in a row and I want you to mentally
select just one of them. Now let me emphasize in the first place that
you have an unrestricted choice, so don't imagine that I am trying to
influence your choice in any way. For example, here's the ace, a
conspicous card, that occupies the central position. For that reason
you may think of it, but again you may not. Perhaps you may think I
had some motive in placing one black card among the five - this might
influence your choice, but on the other hand it may not. There is no
way I could tell, for I am not a mind reader..." Vernon's presentation
in this case mentions 2 of the cards.
So do you mention none, 2, or all of the cards? In discussions with
friends, several have suggested a "compromise" approach. That is,
using patter to indicate that the spectator might think you are trying
to force one of the cards and mention 3 of the 5 cards. One card not
mentioned is the force card. For example, you say: "You might think I
want you to take the 7C because it is the only black one or the AD
because it is in the center or the 9D because it is on the end. Don't
let any of this influence your decision." In other words, instead of
mentioning each of the cards, only mention some of them, but not the
force card - 4H. I've tried this out, but the success rate is only
about 50%.
I have collected several outs, but I'd prefer not to use them. On
the challenge approach though, they give you a way to win back your
money.
Oh, and do you lay out the cards left to right from the spectator's
view (as I've always thought) or from your left to right (as one of my
friends insists)? Well this has been a little long, but I'd like to
hear about anyone else's experiences and preferred approaches. Thanks.
Charlie
P.S. Joseph Schmidt has a good memory aid for remembering the necessary
cards. Use the capital letters in the sentence: Keith Had Seven Cards
AscenD For His Next Deception.
