It will be broadcast (in part) in Japan on NHK jpublic TV. If you have
any friends there they can send a copy. There are no rights for it to
be seen in the USA (legally) -- the principal acts are at the Castle
this week. I don't know where you live. Also they are filming a special
for CBS at the Castle this week and some of the cast may be on that
show.

Interesting! Did you mean "Long live Magic!" in the generic sense? Or
"Long live MAGIC!(tm)" in the bulletin board sense? Seriously, I do
think that things like Vaudeville 2000 will lead us in some interesting
new directions, but I also think that there is a place for people like
Lance Burton. That, to me, is what makes magic continue to be
exciting.

Re: VAUDEVILLE 2000

There are advantages to electronic communications today that are
bringing the world closer and closer. This, aside from just the
marvels of technology. There's an international "fax underground" that
is developing rapidly for the exchange of magical information. I made
a lengthy series of comments on this aspect of communication in Ben
Harris's latest book MAD FAX. But, until the X.400 standard is
world-wide, communication will be constrained. And, there are serious
problems in getting permits to even own a modem or a fax machine in
several European countries.
In some cases the antiquated Telex system is the only way to get
electronic messages into and out of a country. We're doing our little
bit to finish off the rusting iron curtain. A few days ago, for
instance, we worked on an arrangement with the "Office of Culture" in
East Germany for them to translate and print Dr. Bart Whaley's WHO'S
WHO IN MAGIC. It may be the first magic book to be translated by the
"State" from English into German. But phone lines are still so
terrible into East Germany that even a phone call from West Berlin to
East Berlin -- the same city -- can be inaudible.
I can hardly wait until the Eastern Block magicians (and there are a
whole lot of magicians in Eastern Block countries other than Russia)
start travelling. The (ex) Communist magic magazines are full of very
interesting stuff that hasn't been seen. Should be fun.

If you have seen Lance lately he is moving in the direction (the

"NO" and I had my reasons. It is a long story and one that should be
told. So, I will write it offline and download tonight or tomorrow.

Re: GOLD MEDAL

WHY I (AND BILL LARSEN) VOTED NOT TO GIVE LANCE BURTON THE GOLD
MEDAL 10 YEARS AGO....
Yes, it has been 10 years since Lance Burton came onto the magic
scene. It was Evansville Indiana, the IBM convention contests. I
was there to perform and MC and was asked to Judge the Gold Medal
Competition -- with several others, like Bill Larsen, Jay
Marshall etc., as well as the chairman of the judges, Jeffrey
Atkins (from England). Our instructions were to judge to the
highest standard if the Gold Medal was to be given. I think this
was the first time ever. And that criterion similar to the FISM
should be taken into consideration. The usual routine is to have
preliminary competitions, with from 20-40 entries, working all-
day to select the "Final Six". A first place winner is picked
from that group, but the Gold Medal Judges do not know who won
that day. It is only fair. Like in a foot race, you can be great,
win one day and lose the next. And in a magic competition, you
can do a bad show on any given day. So, there you are. Lance was
on the final show, of course. When we finished watching nearly
everyone agreed, Lance had done the BEST job that day. Better
than the day before. So in making the decision to give him the
Gold. I voted NO, based on the fact that on the stage at a FISM
you would be given a poor score for using standard dealer props,
such as appearing candles ala Fantasio, and heaven forbid a
Zombie Ball!!! Bill Larsen voted NO, because he said, "I would
book this act for the Castle, but not for the It's Magic Show."
Bear in mind, Lance had sufficient votes to get the Gold Medal, I
would have changed my vote if it would mean he would not had I
stayed with the NO. But since he was going to win anyway, I stuck
with my NO to make a point. I don't know what Bill would have
done. See next message for part 2.

Re: GOLD MEDAL PART 2

Lance Burton, Part 2.
Following the convention I wrote up my feelings in Genii. Later I
had a great "all-night" talk with Lance (will be in this string
of messages) but.... at first, when he read it he said he wanted
to KILL me. He thought I was full of S**T, etc. etc. Then he re-
read it a week later. Then he started to wonder if I was right. I
had said, "You cannot win with stock stuff, Zombie Balls, etc.
You need Originality!" Then Lance made the big time, working at
the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. Following a lot of work at the
Magic Castle and the Body Shop, in L.A. (a strip club owned by a
magic enthusiast--who gives work to LOTS of coming magicians).
Some time later Lance entered the FISM (I forge the year) and I
was there. I was a judge. Not on the stage committee, but Card
Magic. (DARYL was the top winner that year. Not because of me,
his work was the best. Ascanio was one of the judges and he
agreed that DARYL had not only performed well, but FOOLED ALL THE
JUDGES with his ambitious card, where the card comes up despite
the deck being wrapped with rope!) Anyway, the expectations were
high, Lance was being talked about by everyone. Usually the
theater is about half full during the contests. Just before Lance
went on the theater started to fill and when he arrived on stage
the theater was PACKED and the audience all abuzz! This was Magic
time!!! I sat there, not having seen him work for some time. I
know he had gotten rid of the zombie ball and thanks to Johnny
Thompson, had developed a small birdcage, with bird in it to
float in its place. However, just preceding Lance was an act with
literally the same premise. Doves, Zombie and even a Lamp Post
for the birds to fly to!!! They were copying him even before he
was big. And to my recollection, this guy had a way better
looking lamp post than Lance. I felt terrible. I thought, well
here he comes and he still has the stock stuff and the lousy
looking hat rack/lamp post!!! (continued next message)

Re: GOLD MEDAL 3 (END)

The Rest of The Story! When Lance came out on stage he had a
completely NEW LOOK. Bill Smith had built him a great looking
Lamp Post (it was better looking than the guy ahead of him) and I
thought, within a couple of seconds... IT IS ALL OVER HE IS GOING
TO WIN THE GRAND PRIX, NO PROBLEM. The rest is history. He did
win the Grand Prix. It was a proud moment for me, sitting up on
the stage when the prizes were distributed. (All judges are on
stage to make it look like a big production). And when Lance came
over and shook hands with me, I can't describe the feeling.
So, again, some time later, we visited all night in Las Vegas and
he really sincerely thanked me for being critical in the
beginning. He told me that what I did set him thinking. When he
was doing the act at Evansville he had thought he had taken it to
the limit. It was the greatest and he was the greatest. Luckily
for all of us, he didn't stop growing, he still continues to
think out new things, change, improve, etc.
The dummies are still copying him. But what are they copying?
They are copying something that Lance isn't anymore. He has gone
past that. The copiers don't even see it. Tough. Adios.

Re: VAUDEVILLE 2000

I guess I can't say that I have "smuggled" modems into Europe. But I
was carrying one when crossing the French border once (interestingly
enough, I was on the way OUT of France at the time). The customs
inspector saw it and asked me what it was. "C'est un modem," I
replied. Then I decided, OK, let's go for confusion, it could only
help (I saw him thinking about making a "federal case"), so I switched
to English and said, "It is an electronic interface for a computer."
(Did I mention that this was a rather rural spot that hardly ever gets
Americans?) I could see the little wheels turning -- he knew what to
do with cigarettes, and he'd been very interested in some of my
paperwork that had currency figures on it, but did he really want to
spend the rest of the day on the phone to Paris figuring out what the
funny box was? Nope, he decided, and closed my suitcase! Sorta
reminded me of the time two guys were caught at a phone booth near San
Mateo with a "blue box." They told the cop it was a "music
synthesizer." He pressed a couple of buttons and said, "Uh, guys, Moog
has already done it and his is better." And that kept the two guys,
named Wozniak and Jobs, from jail!
I too am interested in seeing what comes out of what was, until
recently, the "Eastern Block." Who knows, someday we might get a logon
to MAGIC!

Re: GOLD MEDAL 3 (END)

Yes, Lance is changing. Perhaps I picked a bad example, but his name
came to mind as a "classic" performer. From your story it sounds like
you were after constructive criticism and that he took that and did
what he should have done. Your story speaks well for both of you.
Naturally, any good performer will grow and change. I was only trying
to make the case that there is a lot of room in magic and that we all
don't need to go in the same direction. I like a lot of the new stuff
and I think it challenges us. But I also like "traditional" magic as
well. I just got home from a classical concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
I consider my tastes in music eclectic and enjoy most everything from
Vivaldi and Buxtehude to country to rock. Maybe magic should be like
music?

No question Classic Magic is here to stay and very very important. A
perfect example was Fanny Tjin. She did the Rice Bowls, Snowstorm in
China, Mutilated Parasol, etc. ALL STOCK ITEMS. All CLASSICS... but it
was the WAY she did it. I just can't stand the young guys coming out on
stage dressed like magicians 40 years ago doing the stuff like a dealer
demonstration. I think we are on the same wave length. Oh, it's ok to
dress like 40 years ago if you are doing a representation of that era.
As did David Charvet on the IBM and of Magic Cruise, when he did - for
historic reasons - Jack Gwynn's act.

Re: PROMOTE JUNIOR MAGICIANS!

I have a thought. Youngsters in magic really have a hard time
getting much of a break, and of late have not too much
inspiration. However, at St. Louis there were a couple of really
talented lads. Nathan Burton, for one. And one that I really
think has potential, Derek Hughes.So... I have an idea. And I really
want those of you on line here
to use your "R" keys and Reply. Its easy do it. You got to start
replying and/or sending some messages. You may have noticed I am low on
tricks and high on performance
and personality, originality, style, delivery. Tricks are the
easiest part. After all the Gold Medal at the IBM was won with
old standards )) it was style and acting that won it.So... my idea. And
if there is interest I can do it. I want to
have a full evening of magic at the next IBM convention (set for
Baltimore, MD) with Junior magicians. How to do it? One idea I have is
to enlist the services of
several (a lot of them if we can pull it off) of the Magic
Dealers, or maybe even the MDA )) I want local area dealers all
around the country to "sponsor" a performer or group of
performers that can do a really good act. They would pay the
expenses to get the act to the convention. Then, I would have a
special competition for that show presenting a sort of Mini Gold
Medal (that part might be tough politically, but if I have to I
will be the sole judge and make my own award!)Plan B is to get the
interest up there and maybe some one person
who has tons of money and let them bankroll the whole thing. The
important thing would be to screen the acts, and being the
"Dictator" that I am, this would be my job. I woule require all
acts to send in a video tape. One thing about tapes. I do not need to
see a Professionally
produced and edited tape. I would rather see a really bad home
quality tape with the camera in one place, no cuts, no edits...
just a "record" of what the performer is doing.A number of the acts at
recent conventions that I have booked
have said, "I don't have a professional tape" my answer. GREAT, I
only want to see what you do, not how good the tape is.I was burned by
hiring an act that had a great (but heavily
edited) tape. I have learned on that one.So, there is the basic idea.
Anybody have any thoughts?Note: Ren Clark "gave" the IBM Endowment Fund
$100,000 at St.
Loius. Great. But the announcement made was "Ren Clark gave the
IBM $100,000". There is a difference. If it was just to the IBM
we would use it on the shows (HaH) )) SERIOUSLY, it was a great
gesture and the endowment fund is now healthy and can really
start to function.Don't forget, when you read messages, use the "R" key
and send in
an answer or an opionion. It is easy!

Yes, I think we have gotten to the point of agreement - that good magic
is good magic, regardless of the format. That good magic can be "New
Wave," it can be Vaudeville 2000, AND it can be very classical. That
bad magic can't be any of those things, it can only be bad magic. Bad
magic can make you sick to your stomach and can make you dizzy -- Hmmm,
I feel a song coming on. . . "That old bad magic has me in a spin. . ."

Re: NEW EFFECT INVENTED

Here's a concept I created recently for a new close up act I am
building. Two things. 1> I want to record the effect as mine
somewhere. 2> I need some added input from others as to a
possible better method.
Effect: A card is selected (free choice) actually can be face up,
as the secret of the card is not important. Then, you say, "just
so we know there is no other (name card) in the deck, or anywhere
else, I would like you to sign the card." You hand them the pen
and the card and the pen *STICKS TO THE CARD AND CANNOT BE
REMOVED*.
My initial method (still working on it) is to use a Forced Card,
and switch to a card already glued to the pen. Any other ideas?
How about it Busby... anyone else ever done this?

Re: PROMOTE JUNIOR MAGICIANS!

My 21-month old does an effect where he has a box with a window on one
side through which the spectator can see that the box is empty. There
is a slot on top of the box. He holds up the box and shows the window
to the spectator(s). He says, "Box. . . Empty." Then he puts the box
down and picks up a coin. He shows it and says, "Money." He inserts
the coin into the slot, holds it for a moment (to let the tension
build, I presume), and then lets it drop into the box. It vanishes, he
holds the box up again and says, "All gone!." He has performed it for
a wide variety of audiences from a 9-month old girl, who clapped and
hugged him (I told him that magic gets the girls) to the officers of
our commercial bank! He hasn't been booked at the Castle yet.
Actually he is looking for suggestions for more effects. At less than
two years old, his slights aren't too good yet, so if anyone has
suggestions, they would be appreciated. As to wardrobe, at the moment
he tends to perform in casual attire, often in Oshkosh B'Gosh bib
overalls, but, if you want him for Baltimore, he has better clothes.
Also, by then he should be close to three years old and doing better
effects. An audition video is available.

Never heard of or seen the effect before. Gee, Pete, I wouldn't force

stuff. Gaetan and I have worked on a number of things via fax that are
really weird. I know of one he's doing in his new lecture. The way it
works is the effect is posed. Then we both go off and work out
PRACTICAL ways of doing it and compare methods. Always totally
different means of working, but then we get two practical methods,
don't we. In some case I prefer his method; others he prefers mine.
I must confess, I don't care for this as a general way of being
creative, but it does produce odd things that are worthwhile.

Main thing to work on is presentation and style. The "gal" that won the

The main thing was the Audience fell in love with her.

Just got my Genii and noted a very nice mention of this forum. Those of
you that are new here... try the "Q" command and select a message
number to start reading at least 20-30 numbers back. This will give
you an idea of what subjects are in the files. And the most important
command is "R" to reply to a given message. Get in on it. Even if you
just are answering to say thanks, or agree. Or better yet DISAGREE. The
main function here is communications -- and that means TWO WAY.

Good to hear from you Bob. I just hope we can get some good discussions

Compuserve every day, mainly checking on the auto racing forum and the
photographers forum. Boy, they get some really hot discussions going
and it gets pretty wild. They must have 40 or 50 "regulars" writing
comments all the time. I know magic is limited, and most magicians only
have magic as the hobby and aren't into computers. I have just gotten
a new laptop (using now). A NEC UltraLite and will be taking it with me

OK, Pete - here's my opinion... I would hope a junior show wouldn't
mean another couple of hours of birds and cards done by young guys in
tuxedos. My favorite type of magic is sleight of hand and
manipulation, but it seems so over done at some of these conventions.
I would hope all those local clubs out there could be progressive
enough to not all sponsor the next Cardini. I got a big kick out of
Nathan Burton - his act was rough in spots but what fun to see someome
really think. Since, to my understanding, you have the last word on
who appears and since, to my understanding, you chose to have Nathan
appear - I'm guessing we could potentially see something beyond the
"usual"...

Re: CONVENTION SHOWS

Last night I saw the final evenings public show at the JUGGLERS
convention - what a show!! Granted, I see a lot less of jugglers than
I do of magicians, BUT I thought it was a terrific show. What made it
great was that each act did no more than about five minutes of their
best material and that the producer of the show picked for the most
part really progressive performers. The acts presented quite different
material from each other. The short spot format really kept the energy
level high. For MC they used a local weatherman/comic who didn't
juggle and he did a good job of keeping the show together. The final
act was Chris Cremo, a superstar in juggling who did more traditional
juggling but with incredible skill. He, of course, had the star turn
and did a longer spot.
The key point here, I think, is the short spot format. If there was an
act that wasn`t as liked, it was off fairly fast. I would imagine that
in juggling, as in magic, the audience was familiar with most of these
performers. So they got the high spots - not an entire act they may
have tired of. And, of course, most of the acts went by the rule of
"leave them wanting more."! It was a great show!!

Pete, I had a couple of thoughts on the Junior Magi and wanted to add
them to the list.

   1) Maybe there should be a certificate or award just for being
a part of the show as well as prize levels? This might help
       to serve as reinforcement.

   2) Maybe there should be different criteria for the Junior
Magicians? Something more dependent upon talent or "promise"
than on the quality of the show they do at the Convention?

Thanks for your interest. You bet UNUSUAL. Although it is too soon to
know if we can even implement my thinking "officially" with the IBM at
the Board level, I could always just hire the acts I want. But I really
want this to be something special. I have been chatting with many of my
trusted friends for ideas and have some really exciting possibilites.
This morning had a long visit with Mike Caveney. He tells me Stan is
going to do a piece on "What did you like most about the convention
(both IBM and sam) and what did you like least?" Good Idea. Here's my
answers (altho not asked and its ok if not used...but it is from the
inside) I liked most: IBM -- The fact that we were able to bring to the
attendees more acts that they had never seen before, especially the
variety of acts. What did I like least: The COST in producing a top
flite convention. The theater rentals and the UNIONS, not just the stge
hands, but the ushers, nurses, security guards, equipment rentals, cost
more (and no one sees these things) than our entire talent budget of
just a couple of years ago! And the IBM has maintained the "low" $60
registration through all of this. I could really go on, but then that
would be writing a full review and that's not what Stan wants. Be in
touch!

Re: CARD FORCES, MAGIC LESSON

This is my first message on MAGIC! and I am pretty excited. I call
myself a serious amatuer magician. I do not perform regularly in front
of an audience (though I have done this a couple of times) but mainly
entertain friends etc. I have briefly gone through all the older
messages and I thought I might share some of my ideas.
My favorite card force is one I read about in the first book I read on
magic - note the top card of the deck, shuffle keeping top card the
same, now mumble something about 'fair choice etc..' and cover deck
with a handkerchief (secretly reverse the deck while you do this), have
the deck cut 'anywhere' while you have deck on your palm, grab top
portion with handkerchief and bring out bottom portion (secretly
reversing it). If you have done this right the original top card will
be on top of the bottom pile. Let spectator look at the card he/she cut
to....Of course you have to reverse the pile in the handkerchief too
but this is real easy while the card is being noted.
Actually on of my favorite tricks starts like this. I force 4 diamonds
using this force and a special white handkerchief. I have card noted
and placed in a card box (cheap black plastic with a flap). I cover
this again with the white hanky (while turning box). Patter a bit, pick
up your wand and tap the package four times. Slowly open handkerchief
and reveal the 4 of diamonds painted on it. Slowly open card box and
out comes a 4 diamonds with all the diamonds cut off !! I am sure you
guys figured this out but my audience goes crazy !!
Like I said I am a serious amatuer who is largely self taught from
books etc. Does anyone know if taking magic lessons helps? Are there
any good teachers/courses in the LA area? How much do they cost? I
would like to get more invloved with other magicians, especially ones
like me. Are there any local clubs, societies ? Looking forward to
hearing from you all. I would really like to thank guys who run this
service - I think it is great!

will be glad to run information about the Junior Magicians
Contest/Show in their publication. Right now, their October
issue is finished, but if you had some copy ready for them soon
it could run in the November and December issues. They agreed
to run an announcement in either every issue or every other
issue. The November issue is the "International Issue" that
covers gifted children around the World. I told them that you
would be in touch. The editor is Fay Gold and she can be
reached at G/C/T Publications, P.O. Box 6448, Mobile, Alabama
36660. The telephone number is (205) 478-4700.
They also mentioned that the convention for gifted children,
KidsCon, will be held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anneheim in
September and that there will be an East Coast KidsCon in or
near Disneyworld in January or February. They are going to
check the program, as they think there is a magic session, and
let me know more.
You know, if we could get IBM, MDA, the G/C/T people, and a few
others all going in the same direction, this idea of yours could
really turn into something great!

Re: CARD FORCES, MAGIC LESSON

Thanks for the interesting card force and the description of the effect
you use it in.
I, for one, think that there is value in taking lessons from a live
instructor. It is a technique that allows you to watch and practice
sleights with someone who can tell you what you are doing right or
wrong. Of course, books and video tapes are also good sources, but
live training can be very powerful. One of the most organized teachers
in the area is Jim Kahlert. His phone number is (213) 472-3770 and he

Kicks it ON COMMAND?!?? That IS pretty interesting! Do you have an
audition video? I can just see you convincing the hospital to do an
ultrasound of that one! And, of course, the kid's act does have a
short performance span.
My 22-month old is working on a new effect. It uses a plastic "Pepsi"
bottle that is a sort-of self contained Lota Bowl. The bottle appears
full, he picks it up and inverts it and all of the "Pepsi" pours into
an obviously too small area in the neck. With his hand covering this
area, it appears to have disappeared completely. He then shouts "All
Gone!" We're trying to work out the finish. So far, his rather
dissapointing idea is to turn the bottle right side up again, which
makes it appear to have refilled, and to shout "Wow!" While it is
"interesting" to see the "Pepsi" reappear, I think it rather diminishes
the effect. We need a better close for this one.

I have been lax in trying again. It sounds as if you and I are about at
the same level of both enthusiasm and experience. I read "Royal
Road..." about 25 years ago as a young kid who had just gotten my first
magic kit. I had forgotten all about it until a trip to a local magic
shop suggested that no beginning magician be without it. They were
right. The other titles you listed are equally good. I made the mistake
of buying a lot of card tricks that used gaffed decks. It was great for
doing a trick without much technical knowledge but also impractical to
carry around 12 decks of cards. I have since regrouped and for the most
part only use a "regular deck of cards".

My suggestion is to write to Stevens Magic Emporium. Address is in all
the magazines and suggest he allow other dealers. You have to remember
Joe does all the financing of his events and part of the way he gets a
return on his money is by being the Main Dealer. I know he has had a
few special others with products, but mainly he keeps it to his own
line of stuff. Which is OK, it is his event. Frankly, I have another
opinion of what the dealers at a major convention should be. I do not
think that if you own a magic shop you should be a dealer at a
convention. I firmly believe that only manufacturers, publishers, etc.
those that are distributors, etc. be displaying. Then, those that have
magic shops can coe, see what new stuff is being manufactured and order
the stuff from the makers and distributors. When there are 30 or 40
dealers that just have shops at the major conventions, no one there
really does GREAT business. Too many have the same old stuff. What do
you think? What does anyone else think?

Dante! Good to see you back on here! And thanks very much for the
complete article on MAGIC! in the recent Genii. A number of new magi
are signing on daily as a result of the publicity. And more seem to be
entering into the public conversations too.
Thanks too for your kudos to Pete. I think he did a heck of a job on
the instant I.B.M. Convention coverage.
I haven't found a magic kit for our 22-month old yet, but based on your
suggestion I did switch him from cards to coins and he is doing much
better. He does the coin vanish that was in a previous message and is
now working on a new effect using a "Pepsi bottle" that is a sort of
self-contained Lota. We're still trying to figure out what to do with
the bottle after he inverts it and vanishes the "Pepsi" though. Right
now he keeps turning it back over and pointing out that the "Pepsi" is
back. Personally, I think it is a disappointing ending, but he likes
it.

Re: PRIVATE MESSAGES

I notice that there are a large number of "Private" messages that are
being left on this system. Many of these messages could concern topics
that would be of interest to other users. But, because they are
"Private," they can't be read or replied to by others. MAGIC! allows
for three basic kinds of messages:

Public messages addressed to "ALL." These are messages that can be
read and replied to by any MAGIC! user. They are the ones that
appear in the "Messages that may interest you" numbers when you
first logon, but are not followed by an exclaimation point (!)
indicating that they are addressed specifically to you.

Public messages addressed to a specific individual. These are also
messages that can be read and replied to by any MAGIC! user but
they are addressed to a specific individual. Messages of this
type may include questions which could be answered by that
specific individual, but might also be of interest to others.
Others might also be able to contribute to, and enrich, the
     conversation.

"Private" messages addressed to a specific individual. These are
messages which can only be read by the person who sent them,
the individual who they are addressed to, and the sysops. They
are most useful for information that the individuals do not want
      disclosed to other MAGIC! users.

Might I suggest that you consider making most messages Public unless
the information in them is such that you specifically do not wish
other users to be able to read or reply? When entering a new message,
you are asked if it is "Private (Yes, No)" and NO is the default
option. Even if you are addressing your message to a specific
individual, you can select NO (for NOT "PRIVATE") by simply pressing
the ENTER key at that point. You may be pleased to discover that
others may have an interest in your topic.

Dante, I think you'll be the greatest editor of Genii so far. Bill
has been great just in stickativity, and for giving so many talented
people a forum. During the early years, before computers, etc, etc,
putting out a quality magazine must have been rough. Anyway, I'm a fan.
I'mm 44 and started reading Genii when I was 11. When I wsa on the road
with the Urban Cowboy Band I always carried several issues of Genii in
my gig bag. I'd read them over and over on the bus until I got to
a city with a good magic shop and I'd bribe some girl to take me by
in the morning if there was time before we'd roll out of town.
I don't know who exactly laid out the Ben Harris issue, but it was
really quite good. Hang in there. It looks like I might be in Hollywood
for a week in September with Mike Fath at the Roxy around the 13 or 14
so you can best beleive I'll be at the Castle a couple of nights
anyway. Peace, TC

Re: USING MAGIC!

Thanks to the article about MAGIC! that appeared in Genii, and
to the other articles that are begining to appear, we have a lot
of new users. Here is a tip on how to read messages quickly and
easily.

>From the Main Menu:

Type R;* and press That's the letter R followed by a
the ENTER key. semi-colon (;) followed by an
                             asterisk (*). Then press the
                             ENTER key. You will immediately
see the first new message after the
last message you read the last time
you were on MAGIC! After each
message you will be presented with
a menu. You can use this menu to
Reply to a message. If you just
want to go on to the next message,
                             just press the ENTER key.
                             Messages will be presented in
                             SUBJECT order. That means that
you will see all of the messages
                             that have the same subject,
followed by all of the messages on
                             the next subject, etc.

Re: MYSTERY MAGICIAN

Hello,
My name is Jon Lucke, I live in the Washington DC area, and have
just recently logged on to MAGIC!
I would like to find out the name of a magician who performed in
the San Franciso bay area during the late fifties. He was one of
the first live magic acts that I had ever seen, and he really
impressed me because his act was primarily manipulative. For the
life of me, I cannot remember his name.
He performed at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton during the
summer of 1957 or 1958. The only name that comes to mind is "The
Great Marco", but I don't believe that name is correct. His act
was fairly standard. It started with cigarette productions.
Other things he included in his act were the six card repeat, a
cut and restored rope, the chinese sticks and card fan
productions. One bit of business he did during his card
manipulations was a story about a one armed man. He would do
Charlier passes with both hands and say "Then the one handed man
cut both decks of cards like this. You've got to admit that
that's pretty good for a one handed man."
He was somewhat stocky and had black hair. I read in the Tribune
that he was also performing at Bimbo's 365 Club in San Francisco.
The fact that he really impressed me and I can't remember his
name is one of the continuing irritants in my life. If anyone
could provide me with any leads as to what his name may be, I
would really appreciate it.
Also, I'll be heading to the Abbott's Get Together next week. I
would appreciate any information on what to expect and look for.
Thank you -- Jon

Re: QUESTION

I have a question, obviously. I was curious if "Dr Magic" whom I just
read in Reel Works #1 on MAGIC! (message # 90 or
95?) Message # 90 or 95 was the same as Dr. Doom who puts out a catalog
from Mystery Castle. I just ordered "Geek Magic" by Dr. Doom and a
reference was made to Dr. Magic. I missed the show in Boston and just
heard from one or two people about it (sucked comes to mind). Curiosity
to be answered. Pete Biro, looking forward to the next Reel Works.Saw
James Brandon. What a unique show. Were probably going to go back later
in the week when things get more comfortable. Saw first show of the
week which is always a no no.The ladies sure liked him though, Suzanne
could of watched him play one spoon and still go ga ga. Has anyone
heard of a quality "Magic Set" aimed at youngsters. Not those plastic
Houdini Magic jobbies? Finally, I was just wondering why I never heard
of Mystery Castle until I saw an ad for the catalog in an
"un-commercial" non-magic zine? aside from the fact that thats where
easy targets happen to be (like me). later,

Re: JOHN BOOTH

You're right when you said that John Booth is an interesting
person. He's been a minister, magician, world traveler and
lecturer.
With regard to Erdnase (Andrews) I believe his most thorough
writings on the man is included in Booth's recent book Dramatic
Magic. If you are cheap like I am, you might check with your
library to see if it has a copy. If they don't, you might ask
them to do an OCLC computer search for the book and get it for
you through interlibrary loans. Some libraries charge for this
service, others don't. Hopefully yours doesn't charge more than
a minimal fee. You might also have them check for other books by
Dr. Booth while they're at it. As you know, he's written a
number of books.
Also, if you're interested in Dr. Booth as a person, and his
views on magic, you might want to read his series "Memoirs of a
Magician's Ghost" in the Linking Ring, which is the magazine of
the International Brotherhood of magicians. Dr Eugene Gloye of
Whittier and Joe Selph of Los Angeles, who are presidents of
local IBM clubs (Rings) in the LA area, might give you some clues
on how you might get access to these articles if you don't have
them already.
Good luck hunting -- Jon

pete - you cold maybe have one hole as an air hole and another in the

does the second hole allow the glue to escape. but, you could also
glue the sucker to your fingers by accident. maybe the pencil point

the whole upper barrel of a ballpoint could be a fancy glue dispenser,

Re: MAGIC! - VOLUME 1

The first set of MAGIC! messages - #78 (March 20, 1990) to #498 (July
11, 1990) have been transfered to a downloadable file - MAGIC-01.TXT.
This means that you can now go to the file area, download that file,
and read the first volume of messages off-line. For those who know how
to use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-01.ZIP and is
about 1/2 the size of the full-text version.
Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier for
you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the search for
new messages easier and faster.

I have one major complaint. Anonomity. It is unfair to have a review
that is by someone you do not have a name (or names) to. You need to
know who said what so you can understand and evaluate their opinions
and biases. Many read my stuff and know that I have biases. If I wrote

Would really like to know who the 5 reviewers were. I wish enough
reviewers would blast the Speechmaking and Political side during the

Re: MAGIC! - VOLUME 1

MAGIC-01.ZIP is in the files list! If you are seeing the list, it
should be there. But there could be something I've missed, so please
tell me what you do see when you ask for the list.

There are a couple of "tricks" to finding the MAGIC! files. At the
moment, we can't display the MAGIC! category because it is "secret"
from the rest of the system, so you have to remember that the MAGIC!
number is 13.

To examine the MAGIC! file list from the Main Menu. . .

o Type F for File Subsystem and press the ENTER key.

   o Type L;13 (that's the letter L followed by a semi-colon
[;] followed by the number 13).

   o Press the ENTER key.

In order to download a file, if you already know the name, you do not
need to examine the file List. From the File Menu you can type D
for Download and press the ENTER key. You can then follow the
prompts, typing MAGIC-01.ZIP when asked for the name of the file
to download.

Please do let me know if you are still encountering problems.

Yes, the messages live on as downloadable files! And MAGIC-01.TXT or
MAGIC-01.ZIP contain some real history -- your incredible "live"
reports from the floor of the 1990 IBM, for example, and our "scoop"
interview with Jade published only hours after she won the Gold Medal.

(MAGIC-01.TXT is a straightforward text file of all of the public
MAGIC! messages from March to the first part of July, 1990.
MAGIC-01.ZIP is a compressed version of the same file and is faster to

Re: PEN PAL

Hi Pete! Sorry I haven't replied sooner. When I saw your name I
immediatly connected it with THE REEL WORKS. I like those articles
alot. Well I have a FRANKLIN 8000 (IBM clone) and it's my dad's.
We have PROCOMM software for the modem. From the people I talk
to I understand you are a very good magician. I thought I would
tell you a little about myself. I started in magic about 3 years
ago. I took 15 weeks (1 hour a week) of magic courses from Brad
Burt. And after they were over I still went every Saturday to
"hang out". One day I saw a sign for the "I.B.M. CONVENTION"
(I thought it was the computer)so I asked what it was. They
told me it was really the International Brotherhood of Magicians.
So I went downtown to see what it was about and I saw a good
friend of mine. The next # days were magic, magic, magic and I
loved it. This really sparked my interest. Earlier this year I
was elected charter president of the San Diego Junior Magicians.
Then in May I read about "TANNEN'S MAGIC CAMP" on the back of
an old LINKING RING.

My mom called up and got me in. Which brings me to today August
8th, 1990. Just minutes before starting this message I got off
the phone with Bob Elliott (Tannen's camp director). When
I told him about you he gave me a message for you. He want's to
know why he hasn't heard from you in 10 years ( by the way his
phone # is (516) 692-4047 if you want to call him ). Well now
for the next 11 days I have to put together my show for the
Tannen's camp "talent show". I've got most of the stuff I just
need to put it together. Well that's my life, now about yours.
How and at what age did you get interested in magic? What are
your favorite magical effects? Where do you live? Do you have any
good tips on magic" What do you like best : Stage,Parlour,
Close-Up,Cards,Coins,Etc.?
?se -Up, Cards, Coins, Etc.? And

???????? Something wierd just happened to my last question
so I'll start it over. What do you like best: Stage, Parlour, Close-Up

like to tell me. Well I've got to go so I'll talk to you later. BYE!!!

Re: PEN PAL

Suddenly found myself with some time. I got into magic a
loooooong time ago. When I was a teenager, in the l940s, and did
some magic when in High School and hundreds of shows in the Army
in 1951)52. Got out entered a convention contest, did not win,
got discouraged and threw my magic stuff away. Then learned how
to do artwork in advertising and switched to photography. When I
was "established" in my own business. Got back into magic, even
stronger. Doing shows and lectures at conventions from France to
Tokyo and all parts of the the U.S. Wound up developing a stand*up
comedy act and worked Comedy Clubs (heavy in magic content). Then for
the past 5 years have been hiring all the acts for the
IBM national conventions. Favorite magicians: (were))sadly all
deceased) ) Fred Kaps, Ken Brooke, Al Flosso, Roy Benson.
Currently like best: Johnny Thompson, Dave Williamson, Les Bubb
(mime), Salvano, Topper Martyn, Lance Burton, Roy (of S&R),
Tamariz, Gaeton Bloome, Christian Fechner, Flip, Richard Ross,
Sultangali Shukorov, Samson, Terry Seabrooke, Paul Daniels, Ricky
Jay, Maki Kitami, Magic Napoleons, Sanada, Mahka Tendo. There are
others... (above in no paticular order). I like all forms of
magic, Close Up, Illusions... BUT IT IS NOT THE MAGIC it is how
it is presented that stirs me. I HATE ACTS THAT ARE DOING THE
SAME OLD STUFF!!! And magicians that wear the same old clothes.
Look at other forms of the entertainment business and see how
diversified they look, they perform... Magicians should not study
other magicians. If you have any other questions, fire away!

Re: WENII

WENII is Volume 46, number "6 1/2", June 1982. I picked mine up from
"The Magic Shop" in Seattle's PIke Place Market for 50 cents, along
with a whole slew of back issues. Do you know the shop? I don't think
they have any more copies, but it was kind of like finding a back-issue
gold mine. Is Wenii valuable from a collectors stand point?
Do I understand that you represent rock groups? I thought I read that
you had a group including illusions in their act now. (Can't find the
message now). I understand a lot of groups are turning to
magic...Michael Jackson, Sabbath, etc. I'll never forget an Alice
Cooper show where he impaled himself with a microphone
stand...standing!
I'm reminded of the latest issue of Genii, with Ben Harris quoting Penn
& Teller as saying they don't call themselves magicians anymore because
people don't go to see magicians anymore. Part of the reason Cooper's
illusion was so good was because it was so unexpected, I think.
Perhaps that is something we should strive for more often in our
art...surprise. Instead of finding the card buried in the deck,
perhaps we could find it buried in someones neck? Rudy Coby, are you
reading this?  *:->

Recv'd the Paul Harris back issue...it is EXCELLENT! Thanks!
Does anyone here perform "The Cube" from that issue? I'd like some
tips on the construction (and mostly how to keeo the darn thing
together on the table) if you do. Erasing the Aces was much better
after I'd read the directions. Thanks again.
The effect can be names whatever, Pair if Strange Visitors, or
whatever. I just wanted to make sure that the proper name and creator
of the trick were mentioned, so I wouldn't get strange, threatening
phone calls from guys named Vito, who say they work for LJ. *:-> (Mr.
Jennings, if you're reading this, I am just kidding. Really!). (So
much for my chances at an autographed copy of LJ's book now, I guess!)
Anyway, whatever you deem appropriate is fine with me.
Can you give us some information on the Castle and it's video and book
library? Do you have to be a member of the Castle to borrow, etc? The
back issues I have mention something called the PCAM, but is that still
valid information? Thanks,

Jeff (and others):

All my suggestions on how to read and print the file MAGIC!.TXT were
fine. . . except that I hadn't seen the file in a while and didn't
realize that there were no line feeds at the ends of lines! This can
be "fixed" by reading the file in most word processors.

But I have also now fixed the file itself. So another way to get it
properly formatted is to download it again. This time it will read,
print, etc. nicely.

I was in Seattle in 1980 ,or 1981 when I played piano with Mickey
Gilley and The Urban Cowboy Band. My father in law is from Cusick
WA. The latest issue of Genii started (about time) me thinking about
my role in the future of magic. For the most part I live an isolated
life here on an old colonial estate in So. MD. I do manage a couple
of bands. Right now its almost 4am on the ea coast and I just came
in from the recording studio next to the house where we've been working
on Quade's new CD for the lst three weeks. The guitar player finally
got his guitar in tune (three days now) so we went for it. I spent
about half the time reading one of Eugene Burger's books while
listening to tracks.
My goal is to get more involved. This BBS is a great thing for me
because I get to interact with other magicians. I hope I can do
something to pay back an art that has brought me so much pleasure.
I live in Charlotte Hall, Maryland most of the time.
Thanks to you and all the other magi who have bothered saying hello or
giving me a reply. I'll do what I can to keep it interesting. Lets get
Burger on this line. Best, TC

If you can get one hold on to it. We have one copy and when I have a

the answer seems to be right there. Interesting note he told me. There
was a pact made by the editors of WENII, Katlin,Caveney, Lenert,Lewis

Re: LANCE WITHOUT BIRDS?

Lance Burton Clones...take over. Its all yours - BECAUSE Lance
has moved to the next plateau.
He's performing at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas (often)
WITHOUT BIRDS!
Tonight we (Joe Stevens of Desert Magic Seminar fame) visited
Lance in his dressing room after seeing the Follies Bergere show,
where he performed several new illusions. On this show he did
produce three birds. "I used to do seven," he said, "and some
nights I don't do ANY."
Following his "known" opening sequence with the birds and candles
(I had forgoten how good he did his magic!!) he presented a new
illusion (to him) that the basis of was created originally by
Dick Zimmerman. It is a giant replica of a Gramaphone. Complete
with the turntable and the large "horn" a female assistant stands
on the turntable and the horn is placed over her. Lance cranks
the handle and the turntable begins to rotate. He and another
assistant grip sections of the horn (it is a large ribbon like
affair on a metal skeleton frame) and as it unwinds the girl is
seen to have vanished. Suddenly Lance, who was holding one end of
the cloth steps forward and it isn't Lance at all, but the girl!
Everyone expects Lance to jump out of the turntable... but no. In
a wink he is found out in the audience standing high atop the
back of the row of booths, about center of the room.
He follows this with some talk with the audience about the
reactions of past audiences to the effect. Then the next illusion
features "the backstage magician" (seen for the first time last
March at the Desert Seminar. The two gals working with him
decide its time men quit sawing women in half. They put Lance
into a cabinet. (It is done with their backs to the real
audience, and "to" an audience "painted" on the backdrop. It
shows Lance sneaking out the back of the cabinet and hiding under
a cloth covered table. At the end Lance is "back" in the cabinet
and no one is to be found under the table. A very clever
illusion, well thought out and entertaining. With seveal funny
bits with the people "pianted" on the back wall. He works in one
with the levitation of the champagne glass as he pours into it. A
nice "bigger than usual" version.
Taking a cocktail napkin from a table in the audience, Lance
performs a version of the "Creation of Life" turning the scraps
of torn and twisted paper into a live Parakeet. Into the round
cage the bird goes. He then performs a version of the Okito
Floating Ball (while it revolves) that is done in FULL LIGHT.
Beautiful. His walk off is to strong applause (the lay audience
really liked this act) and he finishes with the boomerang toss of
his hat. It flies out over the audience and comes back to him,
just as he disappears off the stage.
Between shows we chatted about his performance he is getting
ready for the 91 Desert Seminar--and he showed us a video tape of
an all-new illusion he plans to debut then. He told us he will do
a completely different show in the Follies Bergere show later
this night. But we couldn't stay, we were headed over to see
Belinda "the First Lady of Magic" now appearing at the famed
Sands Hotel. Home of the early Sinatra shows in Vegas, and the
playground of the Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Dean Martin "Rat Pack"
shows. Unfortunatley we only saw the last half of her show. I had
never seen her work before and I was very impressed. She does
each illusion as part of a production number with 6 to 8 dancers.
Lots of action, good magic and excellent dancing by Melinda.
Moving into the Sands (right across the street from Siegfried and
Roy - at the Mirage) is a great break for her. Geno Munari was at
our table (actually we were at HIS table) and he told us the
shows have been Packed and the hotel is very happy with the
results. Time for bed...another instant electronic review from

NOTE: I was writing this message and the phone in my hotel room rang,
cutting the computer off so will start again. Just FYI - the room does
not have the standard wall jack for the phone that I usually plug the
computer modem line in to. So I had to remove the wall plate strip off
some wires inside the wall and hook into the red and green lines (that
is all that is necessary) with a pair of Aligator Clips on a stripped
phone jack wire. Thus I am going "around" the phone - and that is why
the line was interrupted. If I was into the Jack the line would have
been "busy". Looks great this hole in wall and wires sticking out in a
Casino Hotel!!!

Re: THANKS/GEEK TRICK

Jeff: I'll be looking for the new information! With another baby less
than 3 months away I can't buy as much magic (especially books) as I
want to, but it's always nice to see what IS available. I just watched
"The Secret Policeman's Other Ball" on videotape again last night, and
saw a GREAT Geek trick...hammering a four inch nail into your nostril.
Definitely interesting. Any idea how it was done? I assume there had
to be some kind of switch out, and the camera angles were lousy to try
and analyze anything, but Gosh, it looked GREAT! Dave Magnenat

Re: WENII

-TC: I just got back from the Magic Shop in Pike PLace market here in
Seattle. I went through a bunch of old magazines they'd just gotte -n
in, but no WENII. The proprieter of the shop says copies - if you can
find them - are going for about $10.00. I did get a HECK of a deal on
most of Volumes 1 and 2 of New Tops, including the first five issues.
All are in mint condition. Anybody have any ideas what these would
be worth? I don't plan to sell them, but I am curious. Vol 1, nos.
1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,11,& 12, in mint condition. Also, I believe they were
just traded to the shop by Harry Anderson, a new NOrthwest native. He
was in the shop a couple of weeks ago and traded a bunch of stuff...my
understanding is that these were his. Dave Magnenat

Re: CHAVEZ SCHOOL

Does anyone here have any knowledge or comments on the Chavez School
home instruction course? I -'d like to learn a lot more about magic,
but I'm not about to drop a lot of bucks on something that isn't
thorough, etc. I've seen the ads in back issues, but never heard
anything positive or negative about the course. -Any fe -edback would
be appreciated, ESPECIALLY if you've done it. -
Also, is it accredited? - Is there some kind of diploma or something
you get at the end?
Dave Magnenat
P.S. -I HATE line noise!

Re: THANKS/GEEK TRICK

No gaff to the nail Geek trick. Rucy Coby does it in his close up
shows. You just have to be brave enough. Like sword swallowing and fire
eating. It is a definite Yech. Coby has someone "select" a nail. Then
when done, pounds into a piece of wood. I think he offers to let the
spectator keep it as a souvenir.

I really think Mike Caveney 818-449-1234 has Wenii issues. Write him
also, at 572 Prospect Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91103.

Re: CHAVEZ SCHOOL

Consider that Channing Pollack, Norm Nielsen AND Don Alan are Chavez
graduates! However, they all studied under Ben (Chavez). They each
"came out totally different". My only complaint TODAY is all the Chavez
students I have seen all come out with the same act. Card productins,
Zombie, etc. It is probably OK to learn the moves. But please, please
be an individual. Don't become a clone. Frankly, the best way to learn
is to do. Find a mutual friend and be very tough on one another. Don't
let anything pass without an honest appraisal. Join a local Ring, but
make sure the people you hang with are sincere and don't think that
everything is "great" - it is not. Little is. It is not easy to find ou
the good stuff. But agian, nothing is better than DOING.

Re: ESCAPES

Thanks for Responding Ken. Mostly what I am interested in is the small
stuff, like thumbcuffs and handcuffs. I don't do any stage magic and
people might get the wrong idea if I did a straight jacket escape. I
am looking for a good book on the subject. One that does not use
gimmicked equipment. How did you learn? Letr me know where to start?
Later.

Re: CIGARRETE THRU QUARTER

The cigarette thru Quarter has always been one of my favorite effects.
I saw Doug Henning do it when I was a little kid and I have loved it
ever since. I recently purchased the thirty dollar quarter necessary
to make it work and I am practising the routine so that I can do it
well. However, I would like to use something other than a cigarette
for the penetration. Very few people smoke anymore (at least here in
California) and I myself don't smoke so I don't want to carry
cigarettes around. My two best ideas so far are a drinking straw and
a bic pen. The cheap Bic pens are ubiquitous and almost the exact size
of the hole. Does anyone have any better ideas? Let me know. I'd be
glad to hear from you.
Later.

Re: CIGARRETE THRU QUARTER

How about a rolled up dollar bill (or other denomination)? Stays in the
Money realm. Also I have seen it done with a wooden pencil.
