The following was compiled from the magician's message section of
MAGIC!(sm). MAGIC! was an electronic communications system for
magicians. Access was free, except for normal telephone company
charges. New registrants were required to leave a comment with
their name, address, phone number and a brief resume of their magic
background to be considered for membership. The material herein
should be treated as confidentially as other magic information.

This is my 193rd time to sign on myself. I don't mind. Everything costs
even if its in time or other intangibles. Thanks for sending the flyers
out. i dropped one by Howard Schwarzmans house the other day. He does
have a good collection of books such as Harbin, Albo, etc, etc. An
interesting study. I had hoped he would of signed on by now. Thanx for
putting me onto Byron Walker. A letter was waiting here for me when I
got home with some of the information I was looking for. I'd still like
to know (he wasn't sure) how many copies of the first edition of
QUALITY MAGIC by Okito were printed. He's got one of your lecture notes
for sale in his used and rare lists also.

Re: MAGIC-03
The third set of MAGIC! messages - #1000 (Aug. 21, 1990) to #1498
(Sept. 21, 1990) have been transfered to a downloadable file -
MAGIC-03.TXT. This means that you can now go to the file area,
download that file, and read the third volume of messages off-line.
For those who know how to use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing
files, there is a compressed version of this same file. It is
called MAGIC-03.ZIP and is about 1/2 the size of the full-text
version.
Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

Re: LATEST NEWS FROM HOLLAND.
-Latest news from Holland!!
.
Being far away from you all, I feel the obligation to keep you
up-to-date about the latest news from the dutch front..
Well this week was an exiting week for the dutch magic world.
.
There was a press announcement of a newly formed magicians union,
called 'Selected Magicians'. They present themself as the creme-de-
la-creme of the dutch magicians, and try to offer the innocent
party organisator with the possibility to hire the best in magic
in Holland.
.
Though it is rather new, it is also unknown, and that is always very
beneficial for the rumours. What I heard sof -ar:
- To become a member you have to pay $500 contribution per year.
- You have to be a full time magician
- You should have proven to stand for quality in magic.
.
Since they had quite some press coverage, a lot of (negative) reac-
tions are heard in the dutch magi -c society. Mainly from part time
magicians being afraid to lose work.
.
Question of course is what is the idea behind it:
- Self protection???
- Keep professional magic in Holland on a high level??
-.
Names I heard to be connected with the group are: Tonny van Dommelen,
Tommy Wonder (secretary), Dick Koornwinder, Richard Ross, Harry
Thiery (Di Sato). You - see, no small names.
.
As I told you it is all quite new. Maybe an intersting item to
discuss about here in Magic!.
Do you have something similar in the US??
What do you think about it?
.
Will keep you informed.
.
Thank you very dutch for your attention,
.
Arnaud.
.
P.S.
Am not able to login till next saturday. See you!
Sorry for strange characters, had a bad line while uploading...

NOBODY DOES TH SUB TRUNK FASTER. However I did like Greg Wilson
versjion with glass box and swords. And his Dad in the box was a good
surprise. I got the show from the Hobson bit (great) and like the other

Re: THANKS
Sorry to hear that you will be moving. Hope you will keep in touch
with MAGIC! I'm hoping to have a report on "low cost ways to call" up
soon, I'm waiting for some opinions from users of some services.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed Kahlert. He does a good job. I finished
Magic 4 with him, but couldn't go on to Magic 5 this year, will hope to
do so next year.
Uploading an ASCII file depends on the type of computer you have and
the type of software you are using. If you can tell me those things,
I may be able to help. Also, others on here have done it with
different computers and software and they may be able to help you too.
In general, you tell MAGIC! that you want to enter a message (from the
Main Menu you would type E and press the ENTER key; to reply to
a message you would just type R and press the ENTER key). Then
you complete any necessary information such as name, subject, yes or no
for private, etc. Eventually you will see a dashed line under which
will be 1: . You then instruct your computer/software to "Upload"
and select ASCII. Your program may ask if it should look for a
"Prompt." If it does, tell it yes and tell it that the prompt is a
colon [:]. Your message should then upload (on some software you will
see it happening, on others you won't). At the end there should be a
pause and you should see another line number (say 16:). Press the
ENTER key one time and the message menu should appear. You can then
list your message to make sure it was received correctly, and,
eventually, you must type S for Save and press the ENTER key.
It is easier to do than to explain!

Re: VERNON & JENNINGS
Talked with Larry Jennings about Dai Vernon while I was at the Inn
Event. He said that while Dai's mind is in great shape, his body is
not. For Dai, this is VERY frustrating. He has had some rough times
lately. Let's hope he gets better. In the mean time send him a card,
let him know we still care about him.
Also asked Larry about the 5 Card Mental force. He says that the
best way to present it is as described in the Early Vernon book. He
also noted that he'd seen Vernon do the effect with cards others than
those usually used with complete success!
Larry also showed me some things about Malini's hat loading trick.
I'd read the description in the Malini book and though it was
interesting that Malini had used a block of ice without being detected.
But there isn't much there about the actual presentation and I didn't
see much potential. Boy was I wrong (as Eugene Burger says, lack of
imagination is our biggest problem). Larry thinks it is one of the
best bar tricks and had several amusing stories regarding his use of
it.

Re: BOOKS AND WALTER
We have the Gibson Conjuror's Magazines. Maybe had is a better
word, as we only have 6 copies left -- they were one of the more
popular magazines. Now Linking Rings on the other hand....
I agree that Walter Blaney should do a book, he is extremely
knowledgeable and has been around forever. Even dabbled in politics.
There's a combination -- magic and politics. As for H&R publishing
it, I don't know. Sounds like a lot of work. The used book business
is a lot harder than I thought it would be. A whole bunch of time is
spent on mundane chores like cataloging, making lists, and trying to
determine prices. Considering the time required, I don't see how
anyone could make a living at it. I'm not complaining though 'cause it
sure is fun digging through the libraries and reading the books.

You guys are full of it. I happen to know that Houdini and Elvis are
about to open a theme park in Alma Ata. This is the home of the Russian

Brussells). Alma Ata is about as far to the East as you can get on a
map of the Soviet Union. The winners, Sultangali Shukurov and Sara
Kabajugina, were all set to perform at one of our recent IBM
conventions, but the inability to get their Visas caused a
cancellation. I am going to re-open negotitions with them for the '92
IBM set for Salt Lake City.
Back to Harry and Elvis. Their theme park will be unique, in that all
that enter will be put into straight jackets and they have to beat
Steve Baker's Grimacing before Anverdi (who will be in a hidden
building) presses the radio control button to free them.
All the while Elvis will be playing the Star Spangled Banner as Rosanne

I did this for Fox at a trade show in the lobby at Chicago and we

Re: TABLED CARD SWITCH
Slydini had a great method of doing this. My books are in storage so I
cannot look this up. But basically your left hand rests at the table
edge with index finger and thumb over edge. Card is shown in right hand
drops down card lapped and card held by (I forgto to tell you the left
finger/thumb are holding a card) finger/thumb is taken in now empty
right hand. This is really tough to describe here. I might be called
the "IMP PASS". If you know and understand Slydini's timing, puases
and the way he would drop his hand to "rest" etc. you will be able to
do this. If not....??? Find somone that can show you how he does
things. Maybe there are some videos, I don't know. Let me know how this
works. Adios.

Another approach is the Marlo/D'Amico "Propelled Lapping" technique,
first published in the _New Jinx_ magazine in the 1960's (available in
a bound volume from Kaufman/Greenberg).
None of the methods suggested thus far are done with empty hands
(after all, the card to be rung in has to come from somewhere), but in
this handling the second card can be brought into play very quickly,
and as the title suggests the card switched out is promptly lapped, so
there's only a brief moment when you've got two cards.

Re: K & L MAGIC, CLAREMONT, C
I just stopped by Ken Hensley's new magic shop in Claremont, CA. WOW!
It's spacious (over 1,000 square feet) and very well laid out. Lots of
stock from all the major manufacturers and publishers, including most
of the new releases. Unlike most magic stores all the items are well
displayed-no cramped stacks of boxes. Best of all everything in the
store is magic! that's right- no masks, gags, etc just magic. Besides
all the stuff you see in other good magic shops Ken is also the only
west coast retailer for Collectors Workshop. The staff is friendly and
will explain things BEFORE YOU BUY! That way there is no way you can
feel dissapointed or ripped off when you buy something. There are also
two large tables with chairs all around in the shop for visiters to sit
and kibbutz or leaf through one of the many books available. The store
is open now (9:30 am-6:30pm) but the Grand Opening will be Nov 10&11
with a few "name" magi present. There will also be food for all the
guests. Let's all stop by and support this new venture. The address is
415 W. Foothill, Claremont, CA. This is in an old highschool that has
been converted into a very upscale "artsy" shopping center. Go up the
large stairway in front to get into the building and make a right turn.
Ken's is the first shop. Ken's phone is (714)626-1773 or leave a

Re: TABLED CARD SWITCH
You are right Maven-San. Problem is guys ask for methods that may not
exist. Wanting the "hand(s)" empty is not possible with a single card
on the table. You are right the other card has to come from somewhere.
AH... just remembered a great switch that Matt Corin invented (Marlo
saw him do it and published 'HIS VARIATION' somewhere). Only difference
to the request is that a double card is on the table. Matt wavd his
hands over a face-up card on table. and it visibly changed. As his
hands moved across his right thumb kicked the top of the double into
his lap. It doesn't read great, but if you saw it done properly under
the right setup it was a killer. reminds me of the old Tosheroon Harry
Stanley put out with the deck on table, large coin on face card, and
card switched visibly. (Hole in card). I remember Kaps doing this one
night in a very heavy session, with some serious European fans
watching. Fred leaned back with the palmed card and some big guy
flipped out totally and grabbed Fred wanting to SHAKE HANDS with the
man that just did the greatest card trick he had ever seen. poor Fred
had the card in his right hand. But Fred, his savoir faire, etc. got
him out of it without a handshake. Beautiful to see the scene.

If you like the bullet catch you gotta get the video from Joe
Stevens with Hans Morretti's version. He has (I think) 3 guys shoot at
him, breaking glass in front of his face. I have helped on this and
been backstage watching and have NO IDEA AS TO METHOD. Biggest problem
is the flying broken glass. He wears heavy goggles, but last time I saw
him do it he had a couple of glass cuts inhis forehead.
Also, some time ago I saw a guy on ABC Wide World of Sports put a set
of STAINLESS STEEL FALSE TEETH in to catch the bullet. Funny idea.

Re: ANOTHER 4 ACE TRICK
Here's a great opening sequence for a card routine I have been
using for years. Nothing difficult, but good effect.
Unfortunately I don't recall who's it is, it was part of a batch
of variations of the same effect. Other variants were harder to
do and I stuck with this one because it was so EASY.
Have your deck in the case set up with 3 Aces on the bottom
and 1 on top. Do a couple of riffle shuffles without disturbing
setup. Place deck on table and ask someone to cut the cards into
approximately two near-equal piles.
When done, move them apart a bit if needed so that they can
then cut "about half the cards off this pile" point to the packet
that contains the bottom stock and have them cut some off and
place between the first two piles. Then repeat with the top
stock.
You now have from your left to right. One quarter of the
deck with 3 P¬Öat bottom, followed by two packets of all
indifferent cards and the final, at your right, with an Ace on
top.
Pick up the left packet and comment, "You decided where to
cut the cards. You could have cut here (spread the packet a
little) or here (spread more) or even here (this time you spread
to the bottom and when closing the spread, get a break between
the bottom 3 cards (Aces) and the packet) But you cut here. Free
hand points to top card of packet. And then you say, "And here"
as you say that pick the top (indifferent) card off the second
pile, "And here" pick top card off next pile, "And here" pick up
the top card off the right hand (last) pile. Each card is placed
onto packet in left hand.
Here's the only move.
Right hand in Biddle (straddle) grip pulls out to the right
all cards above the break, while left thumb holds back the top
card (Ace) leaving you with four cards (Aces) in the left hand.
During that pull out to right move, the Left Thumb actually
assists as the cards coming out to right are used to lever the
top card (Ace) face up onto the 3 cards in the left hand. This
immediate surprise sets up the pacing for the finish.
Immediately place the cards in right hand back on table and
deal FACE UP, an ACE onto each of the four piles.
If you don't like four ace tricks, use any other four of a
kind.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. First, of course, there is
the "magic connection." Second, is its incredible age -- I suspect it
is one of the oldest holidays in the World, certainly well over 2,000
years old. Third, the whole idea of costumes and the ability to "stop
out of one's self." And fourth are the kids. We had very close to 100
"trick or treaters" at our door. My favorite this year was a homemade
costume -- the girl was dressed as a sunny side up egg!
One kid, probably 11 or 12 years old, said something to his buddy after
he got his candy; something like "See, they always give you the
treat..." I had some flashpaper nearby and wafted it over a candle --
POOF! Then I said, "Oh, did you want the trick instead?" He backed
away saying, "Uh, no, that's OK, uh, no, really....."

Re: FIFTY CARD VANISH
Why another card trick? Why not?
I have used this one for years with great success. It usually
works best as a closer, because most of the cards vanish.
I'll let you use your 2nd favorite method (you use your
favorite method too much!) to have two cards chosen and
controlled, one to the top, the other to the bottom.
Hold your left hand about 6-8 inches above the table, about
4 inches in from the rear edge, palm up, with the deck of cards
loosely gripped.
The right hand grips the deck, thumb at rear, 2nd etc. at
front with index finger curled over top, and cards are lifted and
riffled back onto the left hand.
As you do this you ask, "How many cards in a deck? Fifty-
two, right?" (You can't wait for a reply or it blows your
timing). Just as you ask this the left hand drops to the table,
near rear edge. Lift hand grip is, fingers below, thumb on top.
Fingers are straight, not like Mechanic's Grip.
Remember TIMING IS EVERYTHING.
You look right in the eyes of a spectator at your left when
you ask the above question. Do not look down!
As your left hand drops to the table (Slydini Rest Position,
to those that know his ways) IMMEDIATELY LOOK AT SOMEONE TO THE
RIGHT, and say, "How many cards were selected? Two, right?"
As you ask you LAP all the cards except the top and bottom
cards (selections). This is automatic, you let your grip go and
the cards slip out from between the top and bottom cards into
your lap. You need to have a little moistness to your fingers for
help. IT IS EASY AND LITERALLY AUTOMATIC.
Just as you say "Two, right?" you lean forward, left hand
comes up, right grabs one card and you display, with a flourish,
the TWO REMAINING CARDS and say, "Then what happened to the other
FIFTY?"

Well, the ghosts could turn into a marketing bonanza -- after all,
Gallo has "Bartle and James" to "thank you for your support." Just
think of what the label could look like for "Spring Hill Plantation."
Hope the deal goes through and that you make a ton of money. And I'll
be interested in what the psychic has to say.
I have a contractor (person who does some software development for me)
who has, for years, lived in a "haunted" house. A few years ago the
ghosts were quite active and they were always finding furniture moved
around in the living room. The only serious "ill-effect" was that the
closet in her son's room was always very cold (in California!) and, as
a child, he refused to go near it. Once she and I entertained a
visiting "techy" from a prospect's office over dinner and she had him on
the edge of his chair with the story of her house. Afterwards I said,
"Why did you get into that whole thing?" She said, "Look, the poor guy
was out here from Ohio for one day. You kept him busy the whole time
and never even let him go investigate the seamy side of 'big L.A.'
This way he at least had a story to go home with!"

Re: MAGIC-04.TXT
The fourth set of MAGIC! messages - #1500 (Sept. 21, 1990) to
#1999 (Oct. 27, 1990) have been transfered to a downloadable file.
This fourth set of MAGIC! messages includes a number of great
effects, the video notetaking discussion, the invisible thread
discussion, and a lot of magic news and gossip. The file is named
MAGIC-04.TXT. This means that you can now go to the file area,
download that file, and read the fourth volume of messages off-line.
For those who know how to use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing
files, there is a compressed version of this same file. It is
called MAGIC-04.ZIP and is about 1/2 the size of the full-text
version.
Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

I recently came across something in a gift store that should make a
good prop if the right routine were presented with it. The prop is an
eraser the same dimensions as a playing card but about 3/16" thick. The
eraser is white and has a playing card printed in color on one side.
I've thought of writing a prediction in pencil on a piece of paper,
then giving a spectator a "free" choice of cards from the shuffled
pack. When the chosen card does not match the prediction, the magi
would pull out the eraser printed side hidden then erase the
prediction. To close the eraser would be set down on the table printed
side up ala magicians insurance policy. Any other Ideas out there?

Re: PLAY IT STRAIGHT TIP
J.A. Bannon's book impossibilia starts with a great triumph effect
play it straight. Read it and do it!!!
I showed it several times and the reactions are great!
Let me tell you my storyline:
Tell the group you are very exited about the next new effect, and have
someone select a card.
Let him and rest observe the card, and immediately start shuffling
a-la-triumph (ignore card that the spectator still holds).
When shuffling is done tell him that you will find the
card from the deck, and only now you see that the card is still not
brought back in the deck.....(oops...)
Propose to change plans and explain that first face up card will reveal
the suit of the selected card. You come to the ace (say, of spades),
explain their card is a spade and can't of course be an ace, and
immediately continue by spreading the deck, and show all other (minus
the selected spade) spade cards.
Thanks Mr. Bannon for this nice effect.

I, also, have been knocked off my feet with the magic of John Bannon.
I was first turned-on to Bannon's book, Mirage, by Cosmo Solano who was

great number of routines that would work well in restaurants. If

Re: WHILE ON THE TOPIC OF PK
I've downloaded Magic-4.txt, and spent a good few minutes reading it.
Extremely pleasing to see the commentary issued forth by the members of
this bbs. Congrats, all!
I would like to toss out my personal use for the PK gimmick. I use it
in a 4 coins thru table effect, where the fourth and final coin gets
stuck half way through the table (visibly!).
Get ahold of a steel-insert half dollar. Place it between two scrap
pieces of 1/4" plywood and place in a small vice. Take a hack saw and
cut the coin in half. Then, after smoothing down the cut edges with a
file, run a bead of superglue down the cut edges and let dry. The glue
prevents the steel shim from falling out. Then, you're ready to begin.
Attach the uh, half half to the gimmick and place in your coat pocket.
Perform your favorite 4 coins thru table effect up to the point where
three coins have passed thru. As your right hand returns from under
the table to drop the three coins onto the table, your left hand goes
to the pocket and retrieves the PK gimmick and places it in your lap
(deep lap position!) and at the same time, finger palming the half
half. As the left hand sweeps the remaining half dollar into your lap,
the palmed half half is brought into the spectator's view--the missing
half half covered by your fingers. The right hand gathers up the three
halves and is returned to its position under the table where it picks
up the PK gimmick and holds it under the table DIRECTLY beneath the
spot where you are going to pass the fourth coin thru the table.
Meanwhile, on top of the table, the left hand smacks the remaining coin
(?) down and, aided by the left thumb and PK gimmick's mojo, the coin
can be balanced on edge. To the spectators this looks like the coin is
stuck half-way into the table. I patter about the coin hitting a nail
in the wood, and use the left hand to attempt to push the coin thru,
wiggling the coin back and forth (this looks bizarre, but wait..).
This failing, I say I'm attempting to pull the other side down thru the
table. I move my left hand away about 8 - 10 inches, and my right hand
moves the PK gimmick under the table slightly forward and back. This
will make the half coin on the table wiggle on its own, as if it were
really being pulled from beneath the table by the right hand. CAUTION.
Don't go overboard with this, as if you move the PK gimmick too much,
the coin will jump up and expose the fact that it is only a half coin.
The left hand then covers the coin and the right returns the PK gimmick
to the lap, and stealing the lapped real half. The left then thumb pad
sweeps the half half away as the right returns above the table to
show the passage of the final four coins.
That's it in a very brief nutshell. I'll allow the rest of you the
post mortems. Comments, anyone?
Final note: I've also considered switching the fourth coin for one
with a bent nail driven through it. As it falls onto the table I could
mutter something about ruining another coin...
Regards,
_richard

Yes, I too am interested in seeing Pete's method of splitting cards.
As many of the others have commented on here, it is generally difficult

Pete can also tell us more about the schedule at Desert Magic. What

a chance to meet each other. Then a program on "Using MAGIC!" that
would cover some of the features of MAGIC! and how to get the most

By the way, I've been going to Joe Stevens' Desert Magic for several

Re: GENII
The new Genii (Volume 53, Number 12, "June," 1990) just arrived and it
is GREAT! The cover features a graphic image of the Magic Castle made
out of playing cards and dollar bills and done by Andy Wilson. Very
nice.
There is a nice Magicana effect by our own T. A. Waters, MAGIC! is
mentioned in Bagdad, and Tabby Crabb managed to get his name in too.
The feature, on members and past members of the Magic Castle Juniors,
is, I think, an inspired idea and I enjoyed reading it (OK, I wasn't
too crazy about Benjamin Garth's gratuitous use of foul language, but
that is his problem, not Genii's. As he himself wrote, "Anything
mentioned should be an integral part of the presentation. Otherwise,
why mention it?").
Anyway, once again, here's to Genii!

Re: HOW TO READ MESSAGES
Thanks to the articles about MAGIC! that appeared in several
publications, we have a lot of new users. Here is a tip on how to
read messages quickly and easily.
>From the Main Menu:
Type R;* and press That's the letter R followed by a
the ENTER key. semi-colon (;) followed by an
asterisk (*). Then press the
ENTER key. You will immediately
see the first new message after the last message you read the
last time you were on MAGIC! After each message you will be
presented with a menu. You can use this menu to Reply to a
message. If you just want to go on to the next message,
just press the ENTER key. Messages will be presented in
SUBJECT order. That means that you will see all of the messages
that have the same subject, followed by all of the messages on
the next subject, etc.
There are several other ways to read and locate messages on MAGIC!
Since most members tend to use an interactive mode in which they
read and reply to messages we tend to stress R;* as the best way
to do this. But here are some alternatives:
>From the Main Menu:
R;nnn (Where nnn represents an individual message number)
Allows you to read and reply to one message. After
reading that one message a prompt will appear that allows you to insert
another number to read. This is NOT usually recommended since you miss
all of the messages in between the ones you read and, unless you go
back and read them, you will not see them. Your message pointer, the
thing that keeps track of the last message you read, will be updated
when you log off.
R;nnn+ (Where nnn represents an individual message number)
Allows you to read and reply to all messages, in
subject order, starting from the message number you have entered
(note that there is a plus sign [+] following the message number.
This is useful when you want to go back to a certain number to begin
reading or if you haven't been on for a while and want to skip a lot
of messages that are "new" but that you haven't got the opportunity
to read. Once again, your message pointer will be updated to the
last message you read, so, if you don't keep track you will loose
the opportunity to read previous messages.
RC;* RC stands for Read Continuous. This is useful for
or RC;nnn+ "downloading" the current messages into a file for
printing or examining later. The messages will
appear in NUMERICAL order, but you will NOT be offered an opportunity
to reply. Messages will just keep scrolling into your system and you
will need to use a "capture buffer" to retain them. RC;* will start
from the first new message, RC;nnn+ will start from the message number
you have entered. While this is a way to "grab" messages quickly to
read off-line, it tends to discourage replies and often turns the user
into a reader rather than a participant. Your message pointer will be
updated.
Along with these read options, there are some ways to look for
messages. All of them are generally followed with the number of the
message you wish to start at and a plus sign [+].
Q;nnn+ Quick Scan will display the subjects of messages
in numerical order.
S;nnn+ Scan will display the "message headers," the time
and date of the message, the message number, the
name of the person it is from, the name of the
person it is to, and the subject.
Q?;nnn+ The R, Q, or S command, followed by a question mark
S?;nnn+ [?] will allow you to search for a keyword or name
R?;nnn+ in the message header. Since Q only displays the
subject, I believe it will only search for keywords
in the subject, while the others will also allow
a search for the name of the person it is from or
to.
Hope that these "advanced features" allow you to tailor your use of
MAGIC! to the way you would like it.

Yes, a bent coin would be good. Even better, I think would be
something like Paul Harris' Hard-boiled quarter. Come out from
underneath the table with the half in three pieces (a de-rubber'd
folding half. Show the three pieces, stack them, and switch them for
a banded folding half. Have the spectator put his/her finger on them,

Re: NEED ANSWERS AND ADVICE
Jonathan,
Welcome to Magic! You're in the best of company here, by the way.
I can recommend several books on card magic, it all depends on how
experienced you are.
For the beginner:
The Royal Road to Card Magic, by Hugard and Braue
Expert Card Technique, by Hugard and Braue
Card Manipulations, by Hugard
More Card Manipulations, by Hugard
The Tarbell Course in Magic, by Harlan Tarbell
The Complete Illustrated Book of Card Magic, by Walter B. Gibson
Card Tricks for Everyone, by Stanyon
For advanced card work:
The Complete Works of Derek Dingle, by Dingle
The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings, by Jennings
Cardmagic, by Richard Kaufman
Card Finesse, by Jon Racherbaumer
Secrets of Bro. John Hamman, by Hamman
and of course, anything by Ed Marlo, Max Maven, Bruce Cervon, and
last but not least, Dai Vernon.
(Gawd, I know I've missed a ton of good work here.....)
As for kid shows... There's much advice I could give you. David Ginn
could probably give you much BETTER advice. I suggest you pick up a
few of his books:
Professional Magic for Children
Kidbiz
Live Kidbiz (including the video)
I could give you many of MY opinions on doing shows for children. If
you're interested, just drop me a note here, and I'll carry on further.
As far as obtaining information on joining the I.B.M., I shall defer
comment, and let our illustrious SYSOP handle that one (hint hint).

Re: WELCOME
Jonathan, I envy you starting out in Magic as it were. I remember
when I was 11 or 12 and beginning to discover conjuring an older
man in Atlanta, Homer Hulse, befriended me and taught me much
until he passed away a couple of years later. At that time, it
was difficult for a kid to meet people like Homer, but you live
in an age where via the modemed computer you can be mentored by
the likes of all the experience here on MAGIC!. Take what these
men say to heart. Their advice is based on years of experience
tempered with the fond memories of being 14 and having that
burning desire to study Magic. The Society of American Magicians
has a youth program complete with its own newsletter. If you'll
write to "Society of Young Magicians, Box 290068, St. Louis, MO
63129. Ask for information and a sample copy of the newsletter.
You can join if you're interested and I think its only around ten
bucks a year. I'd also suggest a subscription to Genii, Box
36038, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Its getting kindof expensive,
though they might send you a sample issue if you write and ask.
Also, Dante Larsen, the editor, is a member here on MAGIC!. Also
a good way to get the books everyone is suggesting is to buy them
used from dealers like Charlie Randall (also on here once a week
or so). Theres plenty to do, and you'll find you've got a lot of
friends on MAGIC!. Tabman

Learn Magic by Henry Hay was my first "bible". For the advanced the Dai
Vernon Book of Magic has nearly all one needs. I once wanted to have a
competition for magicians and like figure skating had to do preliminary
MANDATORY tricks. (Skaters in free style - which is so popular on the
TV presentations - MUST do the mantadory Figure 8s first to qualify).
My plan was that each contestant had to do the Vernon Cups and Balls
WITHOUT IMPROVEMENTS, the Six Ring Routine, Triumph and one other from
the book, thier choice. Points were awarded on technique ONLY. No
improvements, variations, etc. would be allowed.

Holy Cow. Hey, if you use large type maybe MAGIC! Would be equal to
getting Greater Magic every month. Will do a word cound on Inside
Magic.
Hey, all you out there. What do you think of the articles in Inside
Magic related to stealing ideas, effects, etc. I really go with
Steinmeyer's opinion. Also, Cervon can't really believe his statment
"in his book" TV rights witheld. (Not exact wording as I don't have th
book) would hold up?
The best version was that of Harbin. Before you bought the book you had
to sign a contract agreeing to various terms. I don't know whre my
copyis right now, but one of the things tht Harbin did was GIVE THE
RIGHTS TO PURCHASERS OF THE BOOK. What he didn't want, and I agree with
him, was letting those that didn't pay do the tricks.
The worst was the Zig Zag. I bought the Harbin Book. I had two
illusions built from the book. I own the performing rights. Harbin
actually ALSO tutored me on the tricks. And it burns me when guys have
UNAUTHORIZED versions, by the HUNDREDS.
If ONLY those that paid for the rights had and performed the Zig Zag,
for example, it would be a great trick to have in your repertoire. Had
I not switched careers (I was preparing to go full time) I would have
been really hurt by the unauthorized guys doing magic that I paid for
the rights to getting the free ride. You show up and the customers say
"we already saw that trick 40 times".
I remember when the Zig Zag first hit and the copycats were grinding
them out. One dealer showed me a picture with 20 of them lined up in
his wherehouse!!! Pat Page was here visiting from England driving
aroundwith Mike Caldwell. Pat asked Mike (sounds like set up for a
joke) what the most popular trick in the US was. Mike said (JUST AS A
A TRUCK DROVE PAST THEM WITH ONE IN THE BACK, FULLY VISABLE) the Zig
Zag. Mike had just said Zig Zag as the truck drove past on the freeway.

Re: SPLITTING CARDS
Here's a BRIEF version of how we used to split cards. First step is to
lightly tap a corner on the table to break the layers. Practice will
give you the finesse on all the following moves. Less is better.
Once you can see the splits looking close at the end, you lay the card
flat on a table top and peel away the easiest layer. Sometimes you get
one layer, sometimes two. Take what you get. You destroy the layer(s)
you peel off. What you keep is the layer(s) left on the table. Because
it stays flat and what you peel rolls up and gets creased.
You want to wind up with 1/3 and 2/3 layers that will be attached to
make either double face or double back. That way you get as close to
the correct thickness as possible.
Some guys roll the layers off with a pencil.
Practice is the key. Sensitive touch, slow, slow, easy does it.
GLUE. This was the key. You can't just use any glue. Lepage Mucilage
was very good, but the best I had was to use Photographic Dry Mounting
Tissue. You can put the pieces together and seal them with an Iron. Use
tracing or thin bond paper between the iron and the card to keep card
from getting burned and or dirty.
What this gave you was card more "brittle" that snapped, like an
original. Some guys used rubber cement to glue them (easy, cheap) but
the cards come out soft, rubbery, NO SNAP. For some tricks this is OK>
The trouble with the Factory Printed cards is you are stuck with the
combinations of faces. Altho this is OK for most tricks. But if you
want special combinations youj have to make them.
Look in the Genii for an ad from Cards By Martin. He is in L.A. and
makes great stuff.
Good luck, let me know how you do.

Re: USER LIST
OK, I will be working on the user list idea. I like the idea of using
a questionaire approach and updating a file, since that still means
that those who want to add themselves to the list can.
Yes, I think we will be global shortly. I'm rather surprised that we
haven't heard from Japan yet, but we do have a member who is here from
Japan, so maybe he will take the idea back with him. I was hoping to
work with Matt (Jeff Busby knows him) but he has been reluctant to pay
for calls to the US (Strange, since I understand he was doing that to
access CompuServe).
I also like the idea of an interactive system rather than a live
conference. Theoretically, we have the capability (but not necessarily
the $$$) to support a "live conference" here. But I find that it
leaves no record for others to share and that even if we had a fairly
large number of lines dedicated to it, they would all fill up with
"chatters" and the board would be impossible to reach.

Re: SPLITTING BOOKS
Learn Magic by Henry hay, but my favorite Henry Hay book is
Amateur Magicians handbook. I'll not soon forget the magnitude of
"secrets" contained therein. Reading your message caused me to
check the shelf containing same just to make sure its still
there. Some of my most favorite books were gifts from a kind
grandmother who somehow saw my interest in conjuring as
worthwhile. All the Bruce Elliott books I consider worthwhile to
the "younger" magician. Most favorite of my books is a set of
Hoffmann books handed down from my "playboy" uncle who it seems
was an amateur magician - he spent most of his younger days in
Batista's Cuba hanging out in the casinos doing tricks I guess.
After Cuba he went to Argentina and spent time with the Peron's -
I have much of his correspondence with many Latin American
leaders, though unfortunately conjuring is rarely mentioned. As
far as splitting cards is concerned, I appreciate the info. We
have clients in the studio all week so I'll be in the office and
will give it a try. The pencil idea sounds workable. Seems like I
tried soaking a deck of cards in water for a couple of days and
then peeling them apart. Works pretty good, however, when they
dry they don't look quite right. Would appreciate the British
connection. I'm still trying to find out what the press run on
Okito's Quality Magic was and how many copies he autographed - I
have one autographed copy at present and several of the
unautographed ones and am always on the lookout. Best, --TabMan--

collection when I left Texas. I fancied myself a semi-pro
blackjack player at that time till I learned a man should never
gamble more that he can afford to loose. Noticed in Whaley's
Who's Who that Abracadata is mentioned in the periodical section
and no mention of MAGIC!. I'm sending out to you today his
questionairre so "we" can be included in a future supplement. As
far as cost effective phone time - heres what I do - and you know
I call in often - RC;* to download all messages then hangup and
read and reply off line then back on to send messages up. Maybe a
savings I don't know. Promoting entertainers takes a lot of phone
time anyway - I'll try to break it down this month and let you
know if this saves me anything. Also, AT&T has this reach out
America deal that gives you LD time at around 8 bucks an hour
after 11pm and on weekednds. That might be the way to go. With
proper on line time mgmt it would be easy to keep it to an hour
or so each month and still be an active participant. I just feel
lucky that I don't have Arnaud's ld charges. Kudos to you and ECA
for keeping us on the wire. Best, TC

Conversely, I was looking for a really rare book for years. One day,

there on the shelf were TWO COPIES! Being a wonderful fellow, Jay sold

Well a few of you from the MAGIC! BBS took me up on my offer to join
RING 21 for a night at "THE HAUNTED WATTLES MANSION" for our November
meeting and we had a great time. We had a Main show and a Close-up Show
with performances by Bob Weiss, Bill Coomer, Will Chandler, Lois
Harmeyer, "The Phantom", Christopher Martin, and others.
Last night on November 4th we had a lecture by BILL COOMER and we
learned some KILLER close-up magic with cards, coins, etc.... Again a
few of the MAGIC! BBS members joined us and I would like to thank them
and invite them to come back anytime. The lecture cost $5 but it was
money well spent!!!!

Re: STABBED!
Here's a very incredible piece of magic.
To give you some background. There are a number of what I
call "unpure" versions of a trick once described as STABBED IN
THE PACK. The effect is simple. A card is chosen, lost in the
deck. The deck is placed on the table and an indifferent card is
tossed toward the deck and sticks into the side of the deck.
Without any adjustments -- the best way is to let the spectator
handle the cards at this point -- it is discovered that the card
has gone into the deck ALONGSIDE THE FREELY CHOSEN CARD.
There are a number of ways to do this. Most do not allow the
spectator to handle the cards at the revelation.
MY PERSONAL METHOD DOES.
The best scene I ever did this one at was in New Jersey, in
a board room with the president of a major corporation. We were
submitting a proposal to the company, everyone was somewhat bored
with things, the president of the company (who I know personally)
said, "Lets break for awhile... and hey, Pete, can you do some
magic for us?"
I didn't have any props but I said, "If you have a deck of
cards I can do something." Typical reaction, the pres buzzes
someone on the intercom asking for "some" playing cards.
In a minute in comes someone with a dozen pack carton of new
decks, complete, of course, with the company logo! Luckily with
white borders!
So, after doing a number of items from my repertoire, the
pres says, "Which trick in the whole world is the best, or the
hardest to do?" To which I reply, the same trick is the best and
the hardest. Unfortunately I can't do it, but let me show you
what it would look like if I could do it.
Here's what I did. I let him shuffle the cards. The Jokers
were set aside from before.
I then told him to place the cards on the table. Cut the
deck anywhere, look at the card he cut to, replace the cut and
cut the deck two times.
I then said, "Now if I could do it, this is what would
happen. I would pick up this Joker, fling it at the deck (I did
this) and it would stick itself into the side of the deck (the
card I tossed at the deck--it bounced off and into the deck)
right next to your card!"
He said, "I don't believe that is possible." I replied with,
"I know, it is possible, but I can't do it. But, wait, if I could
do it, tell me what was the card you took?" He named it. I said,
"Lets see what happened, take a look."
HONEST THIS REALLY HAPPENED. He flipped the cards above the
Joker over, face up on the table and HIS SELECTED CARD WAS THERE.
I HAD DONE THE TRICK.
Honest, you have to believe me on this. THERE IS NO METHOD.
YOU JUST DO IT.
How? Well, the easiest way is as follows.
First it is really hard to throw the card into the deck. So
what you do is to place the deck about 4-to-6 inches away from
the edge of the table, just a little to your right. You then take
the Joker, face up and give it a bend lengthwise, just the
opposite type of bend you would give a card for the 3 Card Monte.
You lay the card at the edge of the table with about 1/2-inch
overlapping so that you can FLICK the card toward the deck with
your right middle finger (off the thumb).
First thing you practice this until you can consistently
flick the card at and INTO the deck.
Over time you will develop an ability to get the card to go
into the deck at nearly the same place every time.
So, you ask someone to cut the cards and look at the card.
If (BY ESTIMATION) they cut to YOUR spot, just have them replace
cards and square up. Go for it.
If they are WAY OFF, take the cards and cut them estimating
the position you think the card is and get it to YOUR spot.
You can give yourself an out by using a 3 spot and telling
them you can get the card within 3 of the location. But that is
the sissy way.
JUST GO FOR IT. When you miss, you just say, well I told you
it was impossible and go on to a real strong effect out of your
repertiore and they will soon forget your miss.
BUT WHEN YOU HIT!!!!! AND BELIEVE ME, I HIT MAYBE 70-
PERCENT ON THIS and you have a miracle, a reputation maker.

Re: DOUBLE FACERS
I do a fabulous effect with double facers that I bought from Ken Brooke
years ago. It is done "in the spectator's hands" and involves cutting
a card into four pieces -- the see the card in pieces is, say, a 2
Hearts. I have a full sized, not cut, Ace Spades, put it in THEIR other
hand. And when they turn it over it is the duce and the pieces in thier
hand change to the ACE! I did this so often, and HATED bridge sized
cards (they came with the trick -- and POKER size had not existed,
unless you split them -- which I did, but to waste a card each time was
a pain). THEN ONE DAY I FOUND A GUY THAT HAD PRINTED DOUBLE FACERS. I
BOUGHT ABOUT 200 CARDS and was in heaven! Still use 'em. Now that
Bicycle made some it is cheap and easy to get. The only problem is that
if you need a particular combo of cards you might not get them from the
dealer version. Being a dealer item, the trick I do must remain off
line, sorry... if I could remember the name I would post it. I do know
that Joe Stevens sells the line and you could describe the effect and
get it from him. If you buy the trick, let me know and I will send yoiu
the subtle bits I developed over years of doing it.

Re: CARD CONTROL
Here's a simple card control I use all the time.
Card selected. Fan cards for return. Thumb, as opposed to
pressure fan is best.
Hold fanned cards, in left hand, tight. Take card back (this
way you don't miss) and insert it into the middle of the fan,
leaving about 1-inch protruding. Say, "The card goes back, here
somewhere near the middle of the deck."
THE ACTION.
Right hand, palm open, comes from front and apparently
whacks the card the rest of the way into the deck. It hits it but
don't push it all the way in, let it protrude about 1/2-inch.
Immediately move right hand to left to CLOSE the fan.
This brings the front of deck to rear with the selected card
outjogged a bit.
A nice DECEPTIVE touch is to immediately grab the deck with
the right hand along the right long edge and tap the cards onto
the table by their LEFT long edge.
It looks like you are squaring the deck. You are, but the
short way. The outjogged card stays unmoved.
Bring deck to left hand Mechanic's Grip, square up keeping a
break EITHER above or below the selected card as required for
what you do for a finish.
You can use this TWICE for my 50 Card Vanish effect. You
just have to cut the first selection to the bottom, repeat
handling with second card cutting it to the top, without
disturbing the bottom card.

David: How about a color-coded badge using a lot of multicolored dots?
The dots represent something each person has in common with another
person. Finding out the common bond serves as a great icebrteaker
make that icebreaker. Example- closeup conniseurs could be coded blue.
People who have attended at least 1 national convention might be coded
green. You see , each color serves as a conversation starter to
discover why some people are given blue dots, some have green etc.

Re: STABBED!
FYI: Background on the "Stabbed In The Pack" effect: although there are
of course many effects wherein a card is stabbed into the side of a
pack next to a previously selected card, the bounce-off-the-table idea
is Harry Lorayne's. In the 1960's Johnny Benzais saw Lorayne's trick,
worked out a method, and published it in the _New Jinx_. Subsequently,
Lorayne published his actual method in the same magazine, then later in
one of his books.

Thanks, Max. I know there was a version called "Will the real stabbed

card on the bottom and you use a slip cut. NOT SO GOOD. I think Benzais
and/or Persi had some additional work. Mine is estimation and luck.
I have heard someone, can't recall who, that had a key card, like a

Re: CONGRATS, AND...
First, congrats on winning your International Magic award, a most
deserved honor. Second, I'm sitting here watching the tv news coverage
of the fire at Universal Studios the day after watching Universal's
magic awards show. Somehow I kept hoping I'd see the producers of that
show staked out in the midst of all the embers... Don't get me wrong,
I love magic, but like Mad-dog Miller with his fangs in the fetlock of
an over-used patter line, or Richard Kaufman flaming on who stole what
from whom, I get my corner crimped when I see the beauty of our craft
destroyed by shoddy production. I was embarassed. The production
stank like week-old bunny-doo, and the magic, unfortunately, suffered.
Ah, but I ramble. I apologize.
What I really wanted to ask you was if you know if anyone makes
double-exposed Polaroid film packs with "spirits" on them as opposed to
the marketed, uh, Pola-card? Pola-card (or some such name) is where
the picture of the spectator develops with a "ghostly" image of the
chosen card on it. I'd like to heighten my presentation of Telekinetic
Timber by taking a photo of the spectator and falling block of wood
showing some sort of spirit materialization around the block.
I thought I'd ask first before going to the time and expense of
producing double-x film packs for my personal use.
I'd appreciate any help you could give.

Re: LOW COST CALLING
Here's my report on low cost ways to call MAGIC! from within the
the U.S. (I'm still working on ways to do it internationally).
.
For occasional users, AT&T's "Reach Out America" seems to be
a fairly good choice. (It is what I currently use.) Basically,
it offers a discount on long-distance calls placed via AT&T.
There are several different plans. Contact AT&T for info.
.
Competitiveness in the phone business has created a number of
interesting services, and Burt Carpenter, one of our members,
sent me info. on TransCall. Their strong suit at the moment
(they are working on a nationwide plan) is calls within Cali-
fornia. A really interesting aspect of their service is a
reduced rate for "intra-LATA" calls, that is, calls placed
within the 714/213/805/818 area codes. They also offer
some interesting residential 800 number services, voice mail,
and business services. Anyone who is interested can call Burt
at 714-941-3600 or can leave a message for him here on MAGIC!
To avoid commercial clutter, please use "Personal" mail.
.
Now for you "power users"... A couple of you already use PC-
Pursuit. It is a service of Telenet, which, in turn, is owned
by U. S. SprZ¹ Telenet is a DATA ONLY service, not for voice
communications. But they can knock the cost of calling MAGIC!
from virtually anywhere in the U.S. down to about ONE DOLLAR an
hour!
.
There are a few "negatives" that you have to put up with. PC-
Pursuit will only bill to a credit card or direct debit to your
checking account. And the logon process is more complex than
just having your modem dial. But it can be done fairly easily
with a communications program that will run a "script." Here's
one user's comment:
.
"The procedure for calling into the nearest node to your location,
calling out from there to the node nearest to where you want to
connect, and finally calling out from there to the computer at the
other end is a little involved, so a script feature in your tele-
communications package is desirable."
.
Here is a "blurb" on PC Pursuit. The words are Telenet's and no
endorsement on the part of MAGIC! is intended.
.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
.
Telenet's PC Pursuit is a long distance PC - PC communications
service that can save you the cost of long distance data calls. And
you won't sacrifice quality. In fact, PC Pursuit Service provides
clearly superior data transmission, because it routes your call via
the Telenet Public Data Network, known worldwide for its accuracy
and reliability.
.
By placing a local call to the Telenet network from nearly 18,000
U.S. cities and towns, you can access a wealth of online resources
in 34 of America's largest business and information hubs. Effective
July 1, 1989, for just $30/month, you can make 30 hours of data
connections weeknights (from 6 pm to 7 am) and all day weekends and
Telenet holidays. The rate above the 30 hours is $3.00 per hour.
If you sign up for our family membership, you will have 60 hours of
weeknight and weekend usage for $50 and $3.00 for every non-prime
hour over 60. You can also use PC Pursuit during the day from 7 am
to 6 pm for $10.50 per hour and that is less than half the cost of
standard long distance dialing or WATS.
.
PC Pursuit charges are conveniently billed to your MasterCard,
Discover, VISA, American Express or checking account. There is a
one-time $30 signup fee. Sign up today - and SAVE on your long
distance PC communications!

Re: BULLET CATCHING
Regarding Ben Robinson's presentation of the bullet catching. He
presented the effect in the parking lot of the Inn where we were
staying. He had a local marksman, policeman, and ambulance on hand.
There was also TV and newspaper press covering the event. Before
starting, Ben gave a short speech about bullet catching. Afterwards he
had the policeman select 2 bullets from a carton the policeman had
bought at a local store. The bullets were marked and placed in a wine
glass (as best as I could "observe", Ben never touched either of the
bullets). The marksman then took one of the bullets and fired it at a
plate sitting against a couple of bales of hay to prove the rifle
worked. Then Ben took his placed about 50 feet from the marksman and
had the marksman load the rifle. After a few "nervous" seconds of
psyching himself up, Ben dropped his hand and the marksman fired. Ben
fell and laid motionless on the ground for a few seconds. About the
time the policeman ran over to him, Ben started to move around. When
Ben got up, he spit out the bullet onto a plate (again, as best as I
could "observe", Ben never placed his hands never his mouth). The
marks were then verified and the crowd applauded. Ben then gave a few
more remarks.
Overall, I think the presentation was excellent. This is an effect
that needs lots of showmanship. At the same time, it can easily be
overdone. Ben seemed to hit just the right mixture. The only other
time I saw the bullet catch, the performer, a big name and deservedly
so, acted as though this was the 12th time today and lets get this over
with so I can go home.
The bullet catch is an interesting effect. It's something I would
never do no matter how fail safe you made it. There's always some nut
who would want to conduct his own test -- here catch this one! I live
in Texas, I KNOW it would happen here. And, of course, 12 have
died....

Thanks for laying it out for me. What you described is
Theo Annemanns presentation almost to the letter. Annemann used
Orville Meyer's method which was outlined in an early issue of
Genii. It is very dangerous this way. Whether BR uses this method
I don't know, but it sure sounds like it. The method I'm most
interested in is from Hoffmann's More Magic and is much safer in
the end but requires more finger work up front. If you can use
your own marksperson this is quite safe as long as you are far
enough away from the muzzle of the percussion cap pistol. I
enjoyed 12 Have Died having read it a couple of times. This
effect sparked interest in having my library enlarged because I
began finding books and magazines that touched on the Bullet
Catch - Ponsin on Conjuring for example.

I think what made the Magic awards show even worse for me was that I
watched it right after viewing my tape of Copperfield's last TV show.
Talk about the ecstasy and the agony...
This, strangely enough, causes me to wonder why a well-produced
half-hour weekly magic/variety show can't make it on TV in the USA.
Is magic vulnerable to oversaturation? Is there not enough public
interest in our craft? They've done it in England, why not here?
The format would be easy: Host (or this week's guest host) does a
quick effect or two. Break for commercial. Host introduces first act
(close-up?). First act. Break for commercial. Intro 2nd act.
Second act. Break for commercial. Host wraps up.
Can it be so hard? Go figure...

Re: CONGRATS, AND...
Magic on television is popular in several other countries. NHK, for
example, tapes a lot of our magic and shows it in Japan. For a long
time I think that magic was considered useless on television because it
was assumed that the audience would figure that everything was done
with fancy camera work and editing.
But I think that we may be seeing some hopeful, very preliminary
evidence that magic may be making a comeback in a society that is
supersaturated with realism and "science." Good, bad, or indifferent,
there have been several magic specials this year, including the first
ever network special from the Castle. And I think that more new magic
shops have opened than in previous years. As far as I know, the last
"peak" in magic was 40 years ago. Could we be in the ascendancy again?

Re: SINCE YOU ASKED
I've now had a chance to view the International Magic Awards show, and
as you asked for my reaction, here it is. Over all, I was disappointed
with the show. I rather expected it to look better. As with the Magic
Castle special, one particularly unfortunate aspect was that the acts
using music were overdubbed with inferior scores as a cost-saving
measure (although at least here the acts were able to perform with
their own music, as opposed to having to work to no music at all).
There were some good sequences, and a few nice ideas, but not
enough to fill two hours of air-time. Mind you, contrary to the
assumptions of Richard Hart which recently appeared on this BBS, it is
extremely difficult to construct a variety television show.
What I _did_ like about the show was its attitude toward magic and
magicians. Despite its serious flaws, this show had a basic premise
that considered magicians worthy of attention as individual artists.
Consider that at the top of the show the magicians' names were listed
-- an element missing from both the Disney and Castle specials (the
only other multi-performer magic specials of the past few seasons of
American TV).
So, in short, I was not thrilled with the outcome of this show, but
at least it aired, and within its mix there was some decent magic for
the public to experience.

Re: INTRO BOOKS
Regarding introductory books, my choice is Amateur Magician's Handbook
by Henry Hay. It was the first really important book I got as a kid.
Although it is a paperback, I still have it and it's still in pretty
good condition considering I've used it about a million times. Another
early book for me was Illustrated Magic by Ottokar Fischer. I remember
two different libraries having copies. I must have checked them out 15
or 20 times total. The Scarne books were also early influences. When
I look at them now, I'm amazed at the amount of really good stuff in
them. And you can usually find them in any bookstore!

Re: SINCE YOU ASKED
Why is it so hard to construct a variety TV show, Max? Sullivan did
it. Sonny and Cher did it, Arthur Godfrey did it. Hell, even the
Smothers Brothers did it. Carson sports magic/variety acts all the
time. What I see on the stage at the Palace of Mystery is, to me, what
people want. Quality, simplicity, humor. Look at "America's Funniest
Home Videos." Half-hour format, interesting subject matter,
unoffensive host, and audience interaction. Just substitute a few
magic acts for the videos...
I'd really value your comments, Max. Shoot, YOU'RE the "Pro"
here, me, just a wimp. You make the magic, and I keep the magic shops
in business. But one thing for sure, we both love magic.

I agree with you about how an awards show of this type may help the
public attitude. An awards show is a good way to expose the public to
magic and add value to individual performers. It wasn't too many years
ago that the Country Music Awards brought national attention and helped
bring popularity to a form of music that the general public had all but
forgotten. Maybe this type of show will help the public be familiar
with more performers.

It might be worth a dime to let the network know that we were glad to
have the program to watch. If they get the idea that it was popular
they may be willing to do more, and also to improve the quality of the
presentation.
Encourage friends, family, and other magic computer users to put in
a good word. Its kind of like a political campaign, if they only get
the criticism without the atta-boys they may not consider it a
worthwhile cause.
Any airtime devoted to magic should be encouraged, even if it is not
the best presentation. We all know that "Practice Makes Perfect"!

Re: LASER PRINTING
>All the local print shops only do laser printing from diskettes in
>the Macintosh format.
Do you have a PostScript driver for your WPP/Publishing package? If
so, the problem is fairly easy to deal with.
1) Print the PostScript file to disk.
2) Get the text to Macintosh format. There are several possibilities
a) Use your modem to send the file to a Macintosh
b) Use your Modem to send the file to a printing service. There
should be several commercial services so equipped in the New Jersey
area (that is where your from??)
c) Get the file to IBM 3.5" format. All the newer Macintosh's will
read that format, with the help of a bundled (free) utility called
"Apple File Exchange".
3) Once you get the text ready to be read it needs to be transmitted to
a printer. There are dozens opf utilites to do this. Your print shop
should at least have the "Font downloader" which will do just fine.
If you don't have a PostScript driver you'll need the driver for the
specific laser printer. You might consider getting the PostScript
driver, as it scales all fonts and allows some really useful as well as
just interesting effects.
Hope this helps

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE MAGIC KIND!
tabman
Just back from the CEMK (Close Encounters of the Magic
Kind) in Rochester, NY. If names like LOU GALLO, RAY MERTZ, HARRY
HARRISON, MIKE O DOWD, MICHAEL AMMAR, JAY SANKEY, DOC EASON, BILL
MIESEL, DAVID DRAKE, et al interest you, then read on.
I'll skip the details of travel (flew up with HOWIE
SCHWARZMAN in his plane, riding in Howie's trunk after being two
hours late arriving at his house)...just kidding...freezing
because the cargo hatch cover came open at 6,000 feet...flying
over THREE MILE ISLAND nuclear plant...etc..actually he's a fine
pilot but I think he likes to fly through atomic exhaust because
he flew over another one about 15 minutes later....I could go on,
but I won't...you're welcome!
The Thursday night, pre convention lecture, featured the
Bar Magic of none other than DOC EASON. Doc has been working the
bar at John Denver's TEMPLE MAGIC BAR AND RESTAURANT in Aspen for
the last 14 years. In a word, DOC is great. He really works a
crowd, can remember the names of everyone at the bar which really
gets em, and is uproarously funny. As a magician, DOC had to
follow MICHAEL AMMAR's (more on Michael later) lecture, and
killed em with the production of a signed fifty dollar bill in a
lemon held by a spectator. Catch him if you can. He's a real pro
and a nice guy to boot.
KEITH WALKER, RANDY DIMARCO, and JOE RYAN really know
how to stage a meet. Free beer and soda at the bar (Jade Palace
Bar and Restaurant) great meals and much good magic and
conversation. Most of these magicians also attend the 4F at the
Forks so you recognize the caliber....44 magnum at least......
JAY SANKEY's lecture was well received. Jay arrived about
ten minutes before he was to go on (10:30 pm friday) and left
about ten minutes after the lecture. Jay's got a couple of new
effects which will be featured in his new book.....100% SANKEY..
MICHAEL AMMAR. Didn't know how funny and entertaining
Michael was until I attended his lecture. He gives away the real
working of his pet effects and explains all. His lecture notes
are top drawer. Michael introduced MIKE SKINNER's Ultimate Three
Card Monte to the crowd. I can't go into details because it is
available in book form (written by Mike Maxwell for L&L), but the
kicker is a killer. Truly one of the nice guys in magic. LOU
GALLO, inventor of the Gallo Pitch and mentoree of Eddie Fechter,
believes Michael will be the next Dean of American Magicians.
Michael came in a day early and performed the friday night show,
they stayed around to talk magic with everyone and to help anyone
who wanted it....I love this guy.....
CEMK 1990 was dedicated to the memory of LARRY WEST and
friday morning was dedicated him. The magic room featured tiered
seating, great lighting and video. Coffee and pastry before and
after each event...Howie Schwarzman was the only dealer
displaying, however all lecturers had material for sale, as well
as Ray Mertz having his books and effects at a small table in the
corner.....On RAY MERTZ...he, HARRY HARRISON (top trade show
worker) and LOU GALLO kidnapped me saturday night after the last
show and made me go to Zaz's bar in Webster, NY to "do some
magic". Ray was performing behind the bar when a 300 lb, 3 day
drunk, biker chick from hell, grabbed him and demanded that he
turn a five dollar bill into a 500. He told her if he was a real
magician there were a couple of people he'd like to turn into a
rock. After Ray produced a ten pound brass nut from under a
copper bowl, she got very quiet, called a cab and left after the
show...unfortunately she came back about 2am and put a head lock
on Lou and me as we headed over to the PRECURSOR Suite to talk to
ED ECKL, BILL MIESEL, DAVID DRAKE, RON FREDRICK and others...
......CEMK is a sharing experience....the magicians were
open and many effects were swapped....PAUL BOATMAN taught me how
to make a rubber band appear to pass through my thumb...thanks
Paul. Everyone was interested in MAGIC! and I got rid of all my
~rflyers as well as quite a few xeroxs that Howie made up...hope to
meet em all on line............................
Thanks again Howie for inviting me. It was great....Now
if I could just figure out what that green glow is coming from my
left foot........more later......tc..

Re: MAGIC AWARDS
I've sat back and kept my peace...just reading all the comments about
the awards show...but, as someone who earns his living in television,
I have to spout some venom...
Let's get one thing straight...
THE MAGIC AWARDS SHOW WAS ATROCIOUS!!!!
IT WAS ONE OF THE WORST SHOWS I'VE EVER SEEN ASIDE FROM CABLE PUBLIC
ACCESS CRAP.
BLACKSTONE WAS BORING. THE CELEBRITIES WHO WERE OBVIOUSLY THERE FOR
SELF-PROMOTION WERE LAUGHABLE.
THE PRODUCTION ITSELF WAS SLIPSHOD AND AMATEURISH AT BEST.
THE CANNED APPLAUSE SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS DONE BY SOMEBODY WITH A SONY
WALKMAN AND AN ON/OFF SWITCH.
THE RIDICULOUSLY TRANSPARENT COMMERCIALS FOR UNIVERSAL, ETC. WERE
EMBARRASSING.
Who got to speak and who didn't was senseless.
AND THE MORON WHO DECIDED TO GIVE "THE PROFESSOR" DAI VERNON AN AWARD
AND THEN NOT SHOW ANY FOOTAGE TO ALL THE LAY PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER
HEARD OF HIM....THE EXECUTIVE IN CHARGE OF THAT DECISION SHOULD HAVE
BEEN RUN OUT OF TOWN ON A RAIL! THEY DIDN'T EVEN SHOW A STILL PHOTO OF
HIM!!!
This kind of "national exposure" sets the cause of magic back by ten to
twenty years...it makes us look like a bunch of amateurs...unable to
adapt to even the low standards of commercial television.
IF YOU THINK THIS KIND OF TRASH WILL HELP TO POPULARIZE MAGIC, YOU'RE
EITHER AN IDIOT OR A FUGITIVE FROM THE BRAILLE INSTITUTE.
WAKE UP, PEOPLE!
This kind of tripe does as much damage to magic as the no-talent
amateur magi who spent twenty dollars at a novelty shop and insists on
inflicting everyone he comes across with his "act".
MAGIC DESERVES MUCH BETTER THAN THIS.
(Now excuse me while I log off and gulp down a few dozen Valium).

Re: SINCE YOU ASKED
I agree with what Douglas Larson said about writing to the networks.
Does anyone out there have the addresses for the various networks.
After all letter writing campaigns helped get and keep STAR TREK and
other programs on the air!!!

Re: FRIENDS
Wow...it's a small world? Where are you from and how do you know Pat
and Tom? (Tom has to be the number one Marlo devotee in the world!!)
Regarding "Ice Dice," it's a marketed effect. I think it's only
available through Hank Lee's Magic Factory. It comes with two crystal
cubest (hence the name) with no spots and the routine. It's a
mathematical card trick but the math is exceptionally well-hidden in
the presentation. It's definitely worth the five bucks just to check
out the thinking. As I mentioned to Max, my favorite effect in the
book is "Masque," but "Ascention" is a close second. I originally
learned that from Harry Lorayne's "Best of Friends." The review of
"Focus" appears in the new issue of "The Magic Menu." Did Pat or Tom
mention that I publish a magazine for restaurant and bar magicians? It
was nice to hear from you, Charlie. We'll talk again.

Re: DOC EASON
Seems like you had a good time at that convention. As it turns out,
Doc Eason is originally from Connecticut and attended the high school
that's right down the street from me. He's in this neck of the woods
ow because he's planning on spending Thanksgiving with his family in
CT. He's been very helpful in dispensing advice in regard to "The
Magic Menu" and is actually coming back here in the spring as part of
a restaurant/bar magicians convention that we're planning now. In any
event, Doc is going to give me a call over the holidays and we're going
to grab a beer and finally meet in person. Also, your torn & restored
card effect would be very useful to the walk-around performer and we've
decided to run it (probably in the March/April issue). Do you have any
idea whether similar ideas have seen print before? We got into a bit
of a sticky wicket over an ambitious card routine ending that someone
thought up independently, but had seen print in a Jay Sankey book.
Please advise...and thanks again for the routine! We'll send you a
copy. In fact, post your address and I'll send you a January/February
issue, which was just printed this week.

Re: HAVE I GOT ANYTHING HERE?
Ah, sorry, no can do. I took all the trimmed pieces and restored them
into a bunch of blank cards which I use in a 52 card monte effect...
I'm sure Pete or Max will improve on it, and publish their own version
"53 card monte" in an upcoming book, eh?

He's in his own condo at the moment and now old enough to learn the

Re: MAGIC AWARDS
Save a couple of those Valium for me, will ya? I want to sit down and
edit out all but the magic, and I'm afraid I'm gonna have to see the
thing again a few more times while undertaking the task.
The things we do for magic, eh?

Hold off on the Valium. Enjoyed your review. I had only seen a short
bit of it, but can see what you say rings oh, too true. Thanks for
your insight. What do you do in TV?
