Re: TORN

Hi Jim,
I've never seen it in print. Doc is a great guy. We're going to
do some work together. He shares his knowledge freely. He also
does a lecture on Therapy With Laughter. He is exceptionally
funny. T. Crabb, Box 590, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. In the
effect, getting rid of the pieces was always a problem for me so
I made up a "pull" with an alligator clip on one end, clipped the
torn pieces of the indifferent card and let them fly up my
sleeve. Of course, the restaurant bar magician probably couldn't
use the pull bit because of the reset, though I always found it
pretty easy to get the pull and dump the pieces. I'm happy you
want to run "Torn" in your mag. I've got more stuff you can
probably use and will shoot you one from time to time. Doc is in
Philly this week, then home by the weekend. God bless, tabman...

Re: SINCE YOU ASKED

Producing an award show is tricky. I'm associated with NARAS who
does the Grammy Awards. The production company that produces that
program charges major bucks to do the show, but they know how to
do it. I wonder if anyone's gotten the reaction from a non
magician audience. I've found with the Grammys that the industry
says one thing while the buying public says something different.
We hate it they love it - we love it they hate it sort of thing.
The main point is that it was done. The magic was very good and
fun to watch. The Wilson family's subtrunk variation was heart
warming. My wife enjoyed it and watched it twice - and she is the
ultimate consumer. I always bounce my commercial ideas off her
and she it right more often than not. Writing to the networks
will only be good if positive comments are made.......

Re: CREATORS RIGHTS

Is it time for the MAGICAL ARTS PERFORMING RIGHTS
                    PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION ??

Friday night, 11/9/90, Webster, NY...Discussion on
originators rights after effect has been published. In attendence
were Lou Gallo, Ron Fredrick, Howie Schwarzman, Ed Eckl, Randy
DiMarco, Bill Miesel, Doc Eason, Mike O'Dowd, and tabman....
Sparked by the Rights Reserved by Bruce Cervon in ULTRA CERVON.
Does the originator retain any rights over the effect
and/or its presentation after the effect has been published in a
book ???
Opinions ranged from no rights to full rights. In the
music publishing field, the copyright owner is entitled to a
royaly ecah time the work is performed. Once published the work
is open to use by anyone as long as that royalty is paid. In
music the collection of these royalties is quite expensive and
left up to performing rights collection agencies like ASCAP and
BMI.
Also the routine might be looked on as a play and again
covered by copyright law guaranteeing the copyright holder a
predetermined performance fee or royalty.
If the same rules apply to magic as music, then once
published, rights of first refusal (tv, movie reservations) might
be waived.
No solutions were offered. For the magic industry to
aviod federal resolution of conflict, the industry might need to
set up an association to police internally similar to the
tv/movie/music industries.
Is it time for the MAGICAL ARTS PERFORMING RIGHTS
PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION???
Creators should learn the rights of copyright and
trademark. Horace Goldin patented illusions belonging to others
and even had P.T. Selbit in court over the sawing illusion.
There are a number of catagories of copyright and several
ways to protect yourself. If there is any interest, I can go into
it more.......tabman...

Re: RIGHTS

Bruce Cervon must be hallucinating if he really thinks that his
statement of rights in his ULTRA CERVON book is anything more than a
pipedream.
First of all, we're not talking about a cheap paperback...it's a
$35.00 textbook. Second of all, when one buys Bruce's book, (I BOUGHT
MINE FROM BRUCE), this contractual agreement of reserved performance
rights is unspoken and unseen. The book is shrinkwrapped and no
mention of any reservation of rights can be found on the cover.
Now let's be sensible here, would you buy a cookbook if you were not
permitted to actually prepare any of the recipes?
Why buy a magic book at all unless you can use the information
included therein?
And who sez that everything in ULTRA CERVON is entirely original with
Bruce??? Did he pay royalties to those he based some of the moves and
effects on?
In short, if you don't want others to be performing your work, don't
sell it to them! You can't get payment and exclusivity too!

Re: RIGHTS

The implied message contained in any "howto" book is that the
buyer purchases the right to use the material contained therein.
Since magicians buy books to learn to do the effects then perhaps
on a sealed book (ala Ultra C...) notice should be placed on the
outside wrapper stating that the buyer is only getting certain
rights and by buying and opening the package that the buyer
accepts these restrictions....but you're right..the best way to
insure the exclusive nature of material is to copyright the
effects and routines (going up to $20 per in 1991 - now $10) but
not publish them...Coca Cola has never patented the formula for
their softdrink because they don't want it a matter of public
record.........

First suggestion is not to "SHOUT" (capital letters). Save the caps for
when you are real emotional and have to let it hang out. Next spend
some time just being here, read the messages, look at the bullitins,
just sort of hang out. It will be no time at all that you will get the
hang of all of this. If you go to the FILE section from the main menu
(hit "F" from the main menu) you will be given options from there. Just
spend some time looking around. If you can get to the file section and
back here to leave me a note I will try to talk you through downloading

seemed pretty reasonable on their list. If you're really interested,
you might want to check out material on the act of Earl Morgan, who did

awful. Best to all, Jeff Busby

My dear Pete.....
I notice, when looking at old messages, that you were asking who the
people were that are signing on to this BBS. Let me introduce myself
My name is David Sacks. I first got involved in magic around 1970,
unfortunately, I reasons not yet disclosed, I didn't continue my
studies or practice. It has only been within the last 1+ years that my
interest has waxed itself. Actually, it's my 3 year old that got me
going again with it. I would do some simple vanishes and
re-appearances of chocolate and her eyes would light up. I got great
pleasure and joy out of it. As such, one thing has led to another and
here I go again. Now, I am inundating myself with it. There is much
to catch up on. !!!!!!! However, magic is like riding a
bicycle, you never forget how, just get a little rusty (or in my case
a LOT). Maybe you could help; I seem to be doing too much at a time.
Was thinking that maybe someone could work with me and keep me from
going beyond !!!!!! Oh yes, I do close-up.
Well, got to run.
Thanks much and talk to you (AND OTHERS, I hope) soon.
David Sacks.

Re: GREETINGS

OK, here's a plan. Work up 10 minutes of material. Try to keep it 4
minutes of card tricks. And at least 2 minutes of interaction with a
spectator. Such as the sponge balls, where they have to hold or do
something. Get that so it is 2nd nature. Have a logical, ORIGINAL,
opening hunk. Even if it is no more than walking to a table of people
and saying, "I hear there is a magician here, and for a Penny, he will
show you a trick." Get the penny and start going. Maybe you say, "I
meant a Dollar." Then do the Misled trick. Then try to finish off with
one that you cannot top.
This might take some months to devise. It is OK if you go 11 minutes.
But don't for gosh sakes try to do half an hour with the same folks.
If you do a packet trick, for example, have a logical reason to not use
a full deck. I have a think box (cut up real one) that I bring out that
just holds four cards. I say, "I have been accused of not working with
a full deck!" This fits the style I use. If it does not fit you don't
use it. If you like it... RE-WRITE IT... MAKE YOUR OWN VERSION.
Good luck, let us know how you do!

Hi y'all I am Steve Kucera, the Wine Country Wizard. I am called the
Wine Country Wizard because I am a magician living in Sonoma Country
where we grow grapes. I was raised in Humboldt County but decide not to
name myself after what we were growing up there.
I rarely fraternize with other magicians, mostly because I dont have
the time. I am heavily invoved in performing magic and have been for
about ten years. I still have a day job as a woodworker but will be
going full time in magic soon.
I have been performing and developing a magic act using wine and wine
bottles. It has been well recieved so far and will likely become my
"trademark" or specialty" act.
I am most interested in trading thoughts, tips and philososphy with
other magician at all levels. I would also like to send videotapes to
the more advnced users for critique.
I will check in here daily, but feel free to call me at 707 578 8920
if you need to contact me by phone for any reason. Hope to hear from
you all very soon.

And remember the first rule of show business: Make sure they get your

I must let you know that you are not alone. I too used do magic in

find that I'm feeling like the Tin Man when he was found by Dorothy.
I have been wanting to ask for help with the same. I also like close-up
and sleight of hand. Is there any hope to find guidance(sp) into the
magical arts. There are many things that I find difficult to grasp
from reading it in a book.

Is there a possibility that we can get a tips for tricks section that
will speak to the needs of us that are trying to get good enough that
we too can be proud to say we are "Magicians". Right now I'm scared to
do anything in front of someone else for fear that I will expose the
secrets...unfortuneatly my wife tires of holding this...and guessing how
many are in her hand.

I know what you mean, there ARE many catalogs out there. I would
suggest perhaps:

Abbott's Magic Manufacturing Co.
Colon, Mi 49040
Catalog #23 (I think it runs $7.50 post paid)

Stevens Magic Emporium
3238 E. Douglas
Wichita, Kansas 67208
(A slick magazine-style catalog, many good effects)

Additionally, if you're interested in magic for kids, I think it would
benefit you to pop $2 in the mail, and get yourself a subscription to
Autumn's Leaflet, published by David Ginn. David is one of America's
top kid show magicians, and each leaflet is chock full of really

excellent kid show magic for sale. Often, he'll run a "special" on
a few effects and you can save mucho dinero. Write him at:

David Ginn
4387 St. Michaels Drive
Lilburn, GA 30247

Another thought, if you are interested in "what's out there" I really
recommend buying a subscription to Dante Larsen's "GENII". Not only
does it contain ads for the latest marketed effects, but includes nice
effects, articles, and a well written new products review by our own
Max Maven. Max's column has certainly helped me out on more than one
occasion.

Hope this helps!

I perform Multum en Parvo where a glass of wine visibly grows into a
half gallon. I have been offered a job by several wineries doint that.
Its kind of interesting how I decided to focus on wine magic. I
called myself the Wine Country Wizard right after moving to this part
of the state. Soon after that everybody was asking if I did magic with
wine. I said no but soon dollar signs were flashing in my brain.
After wndering aimlessly trying to develop my style it has been fun
to concentrate on a specific act. I am now developing a floating wine
bottle that I hope will be a big success. It is the opposite effect of
the floating glass. In this illusion a wine bottle floats above a wine
glass, pouring wine the whole time. Totally s4elf contained and can be
performed surrounded.
I hope we do have a chance to "vanish some wine" together someday.

Re: GOOD CATALOGS

Hi Johnathan. If you are going to be purchasing magic tricks I would
recommend the book "Catalog of Magic" by Marvin Kaye. It offers reviews
of many popular tricks and rates them on effectiveness, price and ease
of performance.
Of course I am of the opinion that it is best to spend your money on
books as opposed to tricks.
I shy away from all Box Magic and try to work only with equipment
that is real looking ( Fantasio candles, canes etc...)
I also have an informal six month rule. A new effect will generally
sot on my shelf for at least six months before I start to incorporate
it into the show. This gives me time to think of novel presentaions.
Best of luck and let me know if you need assistance with anything.

Pete, The control you mention in message #2312 was first shown to

similar: Riffle the end of the deck and have the selection
replaced. Push the card almost all the way in but leave about
1/2 inch extended. Hit the end of the deck apparently driving
home the extended card but really don't push it in. Immediately
turn the deck end for end showing what was previously the inside
end squared. This throws off the smart ones that thought you
smashed the card completely through the deck to an injoged
position. Best regards. Howie.

Moore, showed me an effect he said he purchased from you. The effect:
two small multi-colored cubes were shown, along with a small wand.
Each cube had a hole through each, just fitting the wand. The cubes
were stacked, and the wand placed through the holes on the top cube.
A (leather?) three-fold screen with slots for the wand was placed over
the cubes and wand. Then, the wand was pushed down, screen lifted, and
seen to now be through the holes on the bottom cube. Sound familiar?
I would really be interested in purchasing this effect. Scott said he
paid about $50 for it. I sort of fell in love with the thing, and was
wondering if you still marketed this effect. Any help would be most
appreciated!

Thanks.

Re: TWO DOLLAR BILL

I am looking for info on a trick I saw a street performer do in San
Francisco. He had a two dollar bill and showed it both sides then
after telling his story he opened it up to find two one dollar bills.
I am looking for a description of how this works...Any help would be

quickly for customers in my store...i.e. they need to be quick to
perform and should not require intricate set-ups. Any Suggestions.

Re: TWO DOLLAR BILL

Hi Douglas,
I'm not sure from your description if this is what you want, but'
one way to do this is with a thump tip. You would have the dollar
bills folded in the thump tip. You can then switch the 2 with the
two singles and then place the 2 in the thumb tip and ditch the
thumb tip "at the correct time" and leave yourself clean.
I know this is sketchy, but it should give you an idea on how
you could do this. If you need more info just let me know.

Re: TWO DOLLAR BILL

I saw a nice money effect performed recently that was a switch of a one
dollar bill to a $100 bill. The neat part was that you didn't have to
do the complete switch that Ted Eggers described, but only used the
thumb tip to get rid of the one. It was written up in a set of notes
in August, 1977, by Mike Kozlowski and was called "The Hundred Dollar
Bill Switch." I don't find any address or publisher in the notes, but
there is a "thank you" to Jay Marshall.

Re: MAGICDB

Randy Lund has created and uploaded what may be a magician's dream - a
show, effect, and library database program designed just for magicians!
I've only tested it a little bit, but I'm impressed! It has all the
nice features -- pull-down menus, mouse support, etc. It is for IBM
and clones and it is shareware. Shareware means that if you like it
you should sent a small payment to Randy. Obviously, with a small
audience, this means that you have to be sure that you send that
payment in, but I think that if this thing was in a nice box, etc.,
etc. you'd pay a LOT more for it than he's asking.

The program and the documentation are in the MAGIC! files area. For
those of you who don't remember, from the Main Menu...

o Type F for Files and press the ENTER key.
   o Type L;13 (the letter L followed by a semi-colon [;]
followed by te "MAGIC! number" 13) and press the ENTER
key to see the list of files.

There are two files to download...

     MAGICDB.EXE - The program itself
     MAGICDB.TXT - The documentation

Something tells me that this is gonna make MAGIC! harder than ever to
connect to this week, but it sure looks like it's gonna be worth it!
Thanks, Randy and Marilyn!

Re: KID TRICK

   Here's a good card trick for a kid's party:
--All you need are two identical decks. Befor you start the
show, take two cards from one deck and put them in your shoe.
You are finished with the first deck. Now, just locate the two
corresponding cards in the other deck and put them either on
top or bottom of the deck.
--Using any method, force the two cards on two different
volentunteers. Have the cards shuffled into the deck.
--State that by stepping on the deck, you will make the two
chosen cards come to the top of the deck
--With the foot that has the cards in it, step on the deck
--Turn over the top two cards and smile triumphantly, as if
you have just found their cards
--When they tell you that those are not the cards that they
picked, appear suprized and say "Oh,no! - I must have stepped
too hard on the deck.
--Show your hands to be empty. Now, take off your shoe and
note that there are two cards inside. When you put them in
your shoe at the beginning, they should be face down.
--Reach into your shoe and show that their two reely"
selected cards have gone into your shoe!
  --Bow
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave
me a note.

HEAR HEAR!!! THREE CHEERS FOR THE SYSOP!!!!! Tabby I think you have
hit the nail on the head about the future of Magic. I am a computer
software specialist "IN REAL LIFE" and I believe that it is time for
Magicians to enter this new age of computers. If the art is to survive
we as magicians must embrace the new technologies. At my place of work
I am called THE WIZARD, this is not because I am a magician because few
people know that, but because I know computers and can fix most
problems. When people find out that I am a magician they usually

Where do you hail from. If you are in the LA area maybe we can get
together and start helping each other?????? And who knows maybe there
are others who are in the same fix that we are in. or that matter
maybe there are more seasoned professionals who would be willing to
also get inolved----maybe this could worked into somthing more than a
magic club, say for example, a magic workshop or (shades of Chavez) a
magic school. Who knows. Let me hear what you think.

Also, is anyone out there reading this --- please let me hear from you.

Thanks to all. Lets keep magic in the forefront of the arts, and do
for each other what we can.

Re: BEYOND "MAGIC"

Does anyone out there have interests in "RE|AL" magic? By that I refer
to things such as telekinesis, ESP, etc. It seems to me that this
stuff should exist, but yet it is extremely difficult to prove.
I also feel that those interested in magic would also have some
interest in these areas of study. I know that I do.
I feel that the mind can, when properly trained, should be able to do
amazing things. The question becomes, "How does the mind become
properly trained?". Maybe such things as mediation or yoga can help.
I for one do try to mediate regularly, but so far nothing. Maybe it
takes a life time; maybe the environment is wrong; ??????
Any thoughts.

Re: TWO DOLLAR BILL

Just after giving you the info on the hundred dollar bill effect, I saw
it done by Flash Covington. He did it very nicely. While you do have
a lot of cash tied up in the effect (I guess that at today's rates the
hundred is costing about $1 - $1.50 a month to keep in the act) the
nice part is that you vanish the one, not the $100. Flash also does a
nice effect with a borrowed $100 bill. He has the audience member sign
it, then he vanishes it. Then he gives the audience member a choice of
any one of three envelopes, promising that each contains a "sweet
surprise." Inside the envelope is a packet of sugar. Flash opens the
pack and produces the signed hundred. A nice variation on the more
traditional "sour" version.

This week I also got to see one of our MAGIC! members, David Yee,
perform. David does a VERY NICE close-up act with EXCELLENT patter and
facial expressions. He has several unique effects, using a lot of
props. I saw him perform twice this week, once with fellow magi and
once with lay people, and both groups liked him very much.
Congratulations, David!

Re: HOOKUP

The Sysop spends a couple of hours a day working for us
here. Though I write a lot, if for some reason I don't feel like
writing for a couple of days I can do it, for the Sysop the same
isn't true. He's gotta monitor the system to make sure its
working right for us all.
Many books today (and valuable reprints and remakes) are
being printed on acid free paper using archival bindery methods
which should insure their (the books) lasting a couple of
centuries. I've got books here that were printed in the 1940s
that are brittle and brown and are destined to decompose slowly.
Many of the most desirable volumes today are expensive and are of
small (250 to 500 or 1000) press runs and most probably fall into
the hands of collectors rather than performers so they're really
of little value to the "in the trenches" magicians.
MAGIC!'s value is in the common ground meeting of
archivists, performers, historians, inventors, authors,
professional and amateur magicians. Most common in everyone here
is their desire to contribute to the art and craft and foremost
is their love of magic and magicians.
MAGIC! is indeed fortunate to have great givers on line.
Persons who share because they know that is the way for the art
to survive and grow. Those so protective of their secrets will
feel their secrets die with them. As the paper crumbles - and it
eventually will - binary data can last as long as its handled
properly.
We're building the databank that magicians will refer to
and add to for centuries to come. Now that most books are being
written by word processors and pcs (binary) it would be a simple
matter to place entire libraries complete with illustrations on
optical disks. Authors could publish without ever seeing paper,
ink or glue. You could "buy a book" simply by sending your credit
number and downloading the info direct.
With the advent of the scanner entire "lost" or one of a
kind volumes that rest in lonely collections can be put into
binary for instant purusal. It should be done before any
additional data is lost to the ravages of time.
The lone wolf need be lone no longer.......tabman..

Re: LINKING OTHER BBS'ES TO M

David,
.
I did some research in the field of BBS'ing, and in order to exchange
messages between 2 BBS'es you have 2 options:
o Echomail, non private messaging
o Netmail, private message system
.
To accomplish this you need a front end mailer, like Frontdoor or
Dbridge and have to assign yourself a node number.
With these systems you schedule events to take place and can
automatize the exchange of messages.
.
My question to you is if you are fimiliar with those mailers and
if you see possibilities to use them. It will also prepare us to
link other magic BBS systems in the (hopefully near future).
.
Please let me know what you think about it...
.

Re: PERFORMING

The best approach to learning to perform for real people, as opposed to
magicians (they react in the wrong places) is just to DO IT. Start with
simple stuff, easy to understand plots. Nothing that you have to worry
about the trick, the moves, angles, etc. Don't work more than 5 or 6
minutes at a time. Leave them wanting more. Don't push yourself onto
people. They don't always want to be entertained. I remember when I was
a kid I would think of a card trick, run in to one of my parents and no
matter what they were doing say, "Take a card!" My dad finally said,
"Its OK most of the time, but when I'm sitting on the toilet, forget
the magic!" Have I helped?

Try to have a beginning, middle and end to your routines and your

I've got quite a few ways to reveal a chosen card, but I'm only going
to give you two of my favorite.
1) Setting: One day in summer. An electric fan is on. A card is
selected and..I..I can't seem to find it. Maybe all this cool air
affecting my performance. Performer stops fan. On one of the blades
of the enclosed electric fan is the selected card.
2) I lied. I don't have a second favorite. After typing up the last
description I realized that is my favorite.

OK. My Favorite revelation (for layment) is to find the card on my

I use the Kaps Wallet (The easiest one to use commercially available is
the Balducci Wallet -- the original person to use a wallet -- and this
item is available from Howie Schwarzman, here on MAGIC!). Bye bye.

Re: KIDDIE SHOWS

Good luck, working for kids is like trying to work with 50 pirahhna.
My wife and I do a lot of stuff with kids, cubs, domestic assult
shelters and the like. There is a coloring book available at most
magic stores for under $10.00 that goes over well with kids. My square
circle works well if I produce something they are interested in (eg. a
cub uniform at the cub scouts), a dove pan used to "make candy" with
flash paper for the wrappers gets them every time. I also try to teach
them a trick they can take away. The one I use costs me less than
$0.10 per trick and can be found in Sheeri Lewis' book of kid magic.
You need a plastic cup with ridges around the body (SOLO) 2 pennies,
and four black round sticker spots. To prepare put a slice about an
inch long right at one of the ridges about half way up the cup. to
present pick up the cup and one of the pennies covered by your thumb
outside and below the slit. Show the cup empty. Pick up the other
penny and show you can't push it thru the bottom of the cup. Under the
cover ofthis move the other penny into a position half in the slot
where it will hold without your thumb. We talk about a blck hole and
the theory that something that goes in one side of a black hole may gou
out somewhere elese. Place the dot on the glass explaining this is a
balck hole and again push the penny thru the bottom but this time let
the penny slide behind your fingers and push the other one thru the
hole causing the "penetratio" You can present this in about 5 minutes
with explanations and I have had parents tell me the kids are still
making new ones two months after the show.
Good Luck

Re: KIDDIE SHOWS

An effect that takes some preparation, costs littleand is big on
entertainment value is cooking cookies in some little boys shirt.
Choose a boy about 6-8 yrs old with a shirt that buttons up the front.
No T-shirts. Have him tuck it in. unbutton a few buttons and have him
hold a blown egg inside the shirt As you tell him to be careful, hold
it gently etc. crush the egg. It's harder than you think. Use your
thumb. If you have a mike hold it close so everyone can hear. this will
get a big laugh. Don't worry about the pieces. Pick up a bag of flour
that looks full. Dip into it with a spoon that you have filled with
plaster to make it look like flour. Put a couple of spoonfulls into the
shirt. As you remove the spoon turn the bowl of it away from the
audience. The hardened plaster will stay attached to the spoon. This
really looks real. Say you lost the recipe and forgot how much flour
you are supposed to use. Dump entire bag into kid's shirt.(really there
is no flour in bag instead have it loaded with a big ginger bread
cookie, or muffins etc. avoid frosted baked goods)This loads the shirt.
The kid will have no idea what is happening. Take out a long funnel
like the kind used to add oil to cars. place bottom in the shirt. Take
out your full milk pitcher and "pour" into funnel. The audience will
roar and the kids eyes will get big as saucers. Put in a wooden spoon
stir everything up then "cook" by placing an atomic lightbulb below
where the kid is holding the shirt.(On theoutside) You could also use
a candle or bic lighter but be carefull and dont get too close. Reach
in and pull out the cooked goodies and give to a kid for being such a
good sport. You can either untuck the shirt for him and drop the
eggshells or let him go back to his seat to do it. Another hint is to
have all the ingredients hidden behind a podium or something and take
them out one by one. You will get a good reatiYon as you pull out
each item. Really ham it up. The kids and the adults will like this
one.

Re: REPLY

OK Pete..."Underground Transposition"...Aces and Jacks are culled from
the deck and arranged in the following order: (face to rear) AS, AH,
AC, AD, JS, JD, JC, JH. The cards are displayed face up with thr RH
taking the aces. Each hand holds four cards for display. The aces are
then placed back on top of the jacks. The packet is then held in
Biddle grip in the RH. The LH slides the bottom card of the packet
about a quarter inch to the right. Your RH hides this condition. You
then peel the AS, AH and AC into your L. palm one at a time. When you
go for the AD, the peeled aces are aligned with the jogged card at the
bottom of the packet, allowing you to grab the upper portion of the RH
packet, thus switching out the aces for three jacks. (This sleight is
called the Veesser Concept) The LH turns palm down and tables its
cards. The RH (from the spectator's point of view, the one with the
jacks) tables its cards to the right. You then patter how you will
cause two jacks to transpose with two aces. Pick up the R. packet and
Elmsley Count to show two red jacks and two black aces. The packet is
then tabled facep. The L. packet is turned face up, another Elmsley
Count executed, and two red aces and two black jacks are seen. The
packet is then shown to have three jacks by reverse counting the cards
into your right hand. The ace is counted first, followed by the JC.
The JS is placed beneath the packet. The JD is placed on the face.
The packet is then tabled again. The R. packet is picked up and
counted in the same way that was just done with the L. This will show
three aces and will place the JH third from the face. Wave your hand
over the packet and Elmsley count to show that the last card has
transposed. The spectators see four aces. The packet is tabled face
up. The L. packet is Elmsley counted to show all jacks. Deal the face
jack (JD) to the table face up and place the balance face down just
below it. The R. packet is picked up, the face ace (AH) is tabled in
a similar way and the packet is placed faced down just under it.
Switch the JD and the AH and turn over the top card of the packets to
show that the cards have played "Follow the Leader." The cards are
placed on the leader cards. Ask the spectator to choose whether you
should now switch the face up cards or the face down ones. Do what he
says and once again turn over the top face down cards in each packet to
show the transposition. Once again, the face up cards are put on the
leader cards. The final phase is, as Max indicated, a bluff. Using
just one hand, pick up each face down card and put it on the packet
in front of it. Then take the right packet and move it diagonally to
the left and the left packet is moved diagonally to the right. With
the same hand, the top cards are turned over and shown to match their
respective packets. When you try this, it may seem silly and obvious,
but it is very confusing visually. Enjoy!! (The Paul Harris trick,
"Reset" is more magical-looking. Also, Pete, would you do me a favor
and download my trick "Jazzy Transposition" (JAZZ.ZIP)? I'd love to
know what you think of it! Best wishes...Jim

I keep wanting to post here, but I have to untangle my notes. It was
designed to give them lots of opportunities to try to figure out how I

I would NEVER do that particular one for laypersons, they wouldn't even
know what had gone on. On the other hand, laypersons don't try to take
apart whatever you've built (usually) and they don't (usually) ask a

I meet Tom at a get together with Ed Marlo. Recently we were roommates
at the Inn Event, which is where I meet Pat. Tom is one of the great
guys in magic. Besides just being an all around nice, quiet guy, he is
also a great magician. He is just fantastic with a deck of cards. Ask
him to show you some of his punch work sometime. He taught me some
really neat things. We also share a love for one of David Roth's
tricks - The Fugitive Coin. We were talking about it at the Inn Event
and we both had our "extra" coin with us. Next time you see, crimp one
of his cards for me! Thanks for the information on Ice Dice. I'll try
to order it. I've ordered Max Maven's Focus. When I get a chance, I'll
let you know which effects I like, if not all of 'em.

Re: KIDDIE SHOWS

A few years back when my oldest son (now 22) was in first
grade the teacher asked me to come "do some magic" for the class.
At that time I was consumed with cards and Garcia's Super Subtle
Card Miracles and wondered what the h___ I could do that the six
and seven year olds could enjoy. Since I had a couple of weeks to
work it out and not wanting to go over their heads I put an act
together at very little expense that worked well for the kidz.
Somewhere sometime I had seen a magician do a bit with an egg bag
using a kid from the audience who imitated a chicken. Clucking,
flapping his wings (arms) each time the egg was to appear. I
produced 15 or 20 eggs (really one) in this manner placing them
into a pail with a fake paper bottom filled with white and yellow
confetti. At the finale, I stirred the eggs with my wand breaking
the paper in the bottom of said pail and tossed the "eggs" into
the audience of first graders. Needless to say, they squeeled
when they found out the eggs had turned to lots of paper...The
kidz loved it and the teacher never asked me to come back and
perform again (need I say why)..Also, Rob's dad (that's me) was a
hero to those kidz for several years, always asking me when I was
going to come back and do it again...I just said,,ask your
teacher.....
About the use of head choppers, etc for kidz, I once
tried to saw my neighbors leg off (we were 8 or 9) after seeing
Marvelo (Lester Lake) do the head chopper, etc at the high school
auditorium. I'd actually sawn down about an inch or so when his
mom came out of the house screaming...soooo be careful...tabman.

Thanks for asking...she's still here and will probably be
unless war happens. She's a member of the USAR Shooting Team and
they will need them for shooting instructors once the shooting
starts. Gloria was on the 1984 Olympic Team (shooting) and came
in 4th so she's pretty good at what she does. Our Tennessee move
(hopefully) will simplify our lives....We plan on building a
small international 50 meter range on the "new home place" and
she can train younger hopefuls. She was US champ five times and
also gold medalist at the 1980 Pan Am Games...I plan on reducing
my clients to one or two groups who are easy to get along with
and to concentrate on magic..I wouldn't mind managing a couple of
magical entertainers and mostly stay home or run into Music City
to make a couple of bucks as needed.
About the ghosts...right after I read your message three
of our dogs started barking in the old east wing..I went down to
shut them up while thinking of a reply...As I walked through the
door I heard voices, though I couldn't understand what they said.
Since I personally hadn't seen the ghosts it gave me a start, but
it turned out to be Roxy the Lab making sounds....I've decided to
sell out to someone who'll restore the old place and make
offices, etc....just in case it is my grandparents they'll still
have their house to haunt.
Glad the video tape arrived ok. The Zaney Blaney stuff is
some of my favorite, especially Walter working in the Dallas nite
club which was later bought by Willie Nelson to become Whiskey

I sat down and watched Walter and laughed all over again...tabman

Re: CHALLENGE

Here is an interesting mental exercise and I think it would make
a great contest.

You are in a strange town with no magic shop. You are contracted
to do a 45 minute stage magic act. All your equipment is lost and
you have one day to put together an act using only things
available around town. What would you do to create an act with
no special props?

I have already mapped out a plan in my head just in case I wind
up in that situation. It might be a very useful skill someday.
What would you do?

I would love to see a magic challenge contest under those
conditions.

Re: MAGIC

Steve Fucera: I would accept your challenge right now, but I want
to think about it some more.
One time when I was an assistant in the FRANCISCO MIDNIGHT SPOOK
SHOW, we arrived at a theater that had NO STAGE.
Here we were with a truck full of illusions and no stage. They
had installed a movie screen and nailed it to the floor. There
WAS a great stage behind the screen. Arthur Bull (Francisco) (I
was "Count Zamora") decided which few illusions could be done in
the Aisles of the theater!!! And we immediately headed to the
worlds largest magic store (at the time) Woolworths.
We bought rope, bangles, all kinds of stuff. We did the rope,
rings and coat using rope a chair and coffee cups for rings. We
did a big cut/restored ribbon. And a lot of other stuff that
Arthur knew how to do based on what we found in the "dime" store.
Joe Berg once did an act "claiming" to have lost all his stuff,
so from stage he passed a hat into the audience to get some
"ordinary" items to work with. He had a stooge in the front row
drop several gaffs into the hat.
GREAT PREMISE, DON'T YOU THINK?
At the Las Vegas Desert Seminar I have always wanted a contest
that was different. Bill Wells suggested having the magician walk
into a close up room WITHOUT ANY PROPS and he had to perform with
what he found on the table. Basically there was just the normal
stuff at a table you would find in a nice restaurant.
OOOOOOOPS>.. I spelled your name wrong. Sorry Steve. Pete

Burt Carpenter: I did the Guillotine with a home made 7-foot tall
version of the Grant item. I had 500 plus in the audience and a
very dignified British Gentleman in place. Needless to say,
SOMETHING got jammed and we had to lift the Illusion WITH the
spectator's head in the opening, carry both offstage, make up
some kind of gag and get on with it.
What had happened was this. I had "set" all the props well ahead
of the show. We went to eat. Another Magician (A** H***)!!!!
Thought it would be fun to "work" some of the tricks backstage to
show a buddy if his. He then "re-set" things. Only he didn't know
how and didn't tell anybody until after the show when he said he
was "sorry". He sure was sorry. A sorry individual.
We told him the guy could have been seriously hurt if it was a
different version of the trick and it didn't phase this fool at
all.
While on this. I can't understand why AT A MAGIC EVENING OR A
CONVENTION that Magician's think it is OK for them to COME
BACKSTAGE. All they do is get in the way and slow things up,
cause acts to lose concentration while setting up, or psyching
themselves up. After a show it is just as bad. They are trying to
pack NEATLY and sometimes (often) have gaffs they really don't
want other magicians to see.
In 1951 I was in New York on the way to my tour of Army duty in
Germany. Had a few days to visit the city. While downtown saw
that Mardoni and Louise were appearing at the Palace Theater. I
bought a ticket up front. When Mardoni asked for a volunteer, I
was onstage like a rocket.
You see I always wanted to be on the Palace stage, as my Dad
worked the Palace when in Vodvil in the Roaring 20s. To work
there meant you were in the Big Time. So now I can say that I
appeared on stage at the Palace.
Guess what the trick was? The guillotine. And you won't believe
this, but even thought I knew the trick, I got scated S-less,
thinking something MIGHT go wrong!!!
When my Dad was at the Palace Milton Berle was headlining (at
another theater) at age 17! My Dad worked with Berle, Jack Benny,
Fred Allen, Olsen and Johnson (in Hells A Poppin) where the acts
(he was an acrobatic roller skater) had to work all through the
show in comedy sketches. The acts didn't like this, they didn't
get extra pay, and they had to stick around all day. Normally
they would do their 5-8 minute bit and go out around the city.
Typo on line 30 should be SCARED, NOT SCATED

Jim: I downloaded the material and will go over it carefully. You
don't know how much I appreciate this.
This is one of the great things of the MAGIC! BBS -- incredible
cooperation.
Just got Ultra Cervon. It is a bit overwritten and I wish the
descriptions and the photos were on the same page. I was all tied
up holding the deck a certain way (trying to do his Pass) and I
had to turn the page. Not easy.
I can't agree with Bruce on the RIGHTS RESERVED in front of the
book. I think this (if anything like this is hoped for) needs to
be on the order form or on the outside of the book on a sheet if
book is wrapped. And then, a great amount of the material, like
Hanky Panky and the beginning moves in the rope routine, are not
even Bruce's.
I think when you sell a book the buyer owns the material for HIS
PERSONAL USE. He cannot write it up and sell or teach it to
someone as HIS.
What I think would be good to put in the front of a book, in a
prominent place and in BIG BOLD TYPE would be:
THINK! IF I AM DOING THIS MAGIC, SAY AT A CONVENTION, OR AT THE
CASTLE, EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE PAID FOR IT, TALK TO ME, SEE WHAT
MATERIAL I AM DOING, AND DO SOMETHING ELSE.
Matter of fact at any gathering where there are several magicians
I think they should get together and discuss the content of their
shows to avoid duplication.
It is really difficult for the booker (in many cases) to know the
current repertiore of all the acts. I have booked an act to a
particular routine and when the act showed up was doing "all new
stuff" -- which I wouldn't have booked in a million years.
In the old days of showbiz agents used to book "act as seen"
naming the venue.
I could go on, but my phone bill jumped from the high $200 a
month to over $400!!!!!!!!!

If you've ever dreamed about being among the first to see a new magic
book list, here's your chance! Charlie Randall has uploaded H&R-2.ZIP
to the MAGIC! files area. The printed copies, sent by regular mail,
won't arrive in people's hands for a few days, so MAGIC! members,
thanks to Charlie, will be getting first pick (over the Thanksgiving
holiday, Charlie says to call Richard Hatch at the number in the list
to reserve items).
For those who still haven't mastered using ZIP, I've also put the file
in plain text form as H&R-2.TXT. But it takes FIVE TIMES AS LONG to
download. Instead, you might download H&R-2.ZIP and the PKZIP program
(check the listing in file area 13, I've forgotten the full name of the
zip program) and learn to use ZIP over the holidays.
Just for the record (and for those who wonder about such things) there
is no commercial relationship between MAGIC! and H&R.
Have fun with the new list!

organize your library, tricks, and lets you put together a show from
your trick file. What can I say, it just appeals to my orderly sense!
You can then print out a list of your library, and you can summarize

Jim Sisti:
Working on the Hamman transposition routine and I suddenly
remembered a BETTER switch grip than the Veeser. What you do is
to hold the break between the bottom card and those above it at
the FRONT RIGHT with your right ring finger. The right thumb is
at the right rear corner, just holding the cards. The right
Middle finger (alongside the ring finger) helps to conceal the
break by holding UP the bottom card. That way the edges visible
all around are flush, there is no card sticking out to the right
off the bottom.
I hope you can follow this grip by my description.
Then... you peel off the first three Aces, then you merely
LAY all the cards in right hand on top of the three Aces,
squared, you STRAIGHTEN the right middle finger, the cards above
the break (pivoting off the right thumb at the rear) are gripped
with the left hand by the Thumb against the left index finger,
not bent, but straigt (both thumb and finger) sort of pinching
the cards and taking them to the left. There is no re-adjustment
of fingers needed. You automatically have four cards in each
hand.
Again, thanks and hope you like this "touch".

the program from night to night. Thus, during the Atlantic City run I
used about three and a half hours of material, all using items bought

Although I can't personally attest to it, I have heard from many
sources that people trained in Scientology are able to do many things
that most of us would consider to be ESP. They say it doesn't take a
lifetime, maybe several years. They say they do not advertise the fact
that they can do these things because 1. they don't want to make
themselves into a sideshow and 2. it's now natural everyday stuff to
them. All I can say is since the government and the press are always
dogging them their must be something to it. If you have time go to a
library and check out some of the books by Hubbard. Good luck.

I hope you got some good suggestions for your problem about performing
for children. I am in a similar situation and I was hoping that if you
got some good advice you could pass it on to me! I also like to do
some card and coin magic however, I am a definite AMATEUR. I can't
even do a pass yet. Some co-workers enjoyed a routine I did with some
cards and uncharacteristically (what a word!) of me, I didn't screw up.
One thing led to another and I ended up agreeing to do a benefit show
for about 50 kids and 200 adults this December 16. Now I don't do
great magic to begin with and I'm certainly not going to be comfortable
going from doing some card tricks to hopping up on stage as if I were
MR. ENTERTAINER! If I survive this it will only be from some good
advice from the Magic! folks and a lot of practice. Please reply if
you can give me even a grain of hope! Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving.

Tabman- Thanks very much for the ideas. You have a heck of a good
sense of humor which is exactly what I will need to get me through this
Trial By Fire. When I reread my own message I posted on our BBS asking
for help, it sounded like I distained having to work for kids and doing
it without pay, no less. Actally, I am simply an amateur magician in
the strictest sense of the word. I happened to do a few card and coin
effects for some friends which I thankfully (or maybe not) didn't screw
up. Now, all of a sudden, I am to be performing on stage for an
audience of some 300 people! So it's not disdain, it's just being
scared silly! I like your ideas though. If I can get them laughing
and keep them from gnawing at my ankles we'll all be happy. I hope you

Re: PERFORMING

Here's what may be a bit more advice... A "screw up" needn't be one if
the audience doesn't know it happened. You might just try to have a
couple of contingency plans, don't have to be perfectly thought out,
but something you can use. For example, you have a deck setup to do
something and the spectator messes up the set up. Instead of breaking
out in a sweat, have something in reserve that you can do like "OK, now
pick a card..." Audience doesn't need to know that you just switched
tricks.

Re: BEYOND "MAGIC"

        L. Ron Hubbard was a scifi writer. I read his ten volume
series "Mission Earth". The protagonist, Jetero Heller, was
probably, now that you mention it, a scientologist. The
scientologists have churches in most major cities - LA,
Nashville, DC, NYC, Seattle, etc, - where they have programs
aimed at people in the arts. What works for some may not work for
everyone, however, most scientologists are successful (whatever
you perceive it to be).
"Dianetics" is L. Ron Hubbard's manual of the basic
principals of reaching "clear" - in essence, not being in your
own way.

In the Paul Harris issue of the Magical Arts Journal, there's a Diamond

featured a private detective and his escapades. The puns in it are a
little more up to date than the ones found in "Diamond Jack" (in fact,

being his originally...thus its inclusion in that particular edition of

Re: BEST OF TIMES/WORST OF TI

I've just been compiling a few statistics concerning MAGIC! that I
thought might be of interest... From November 1, 1990 to November
21, 1990 there were 656 logons. 249 of these (38%) were the week
of November 15th to the 21st. We averaged 35.6 calls per day.
The average on-line time per call was 14.2 minutes.

I also looked at the weekday and weekend hours when the system is
least and most used. Based on a one week review (11/15-11/21),
the best time to call on either a weekday or a weekend is 4 a.m.
Pacific Time (0% utilization). On weekdays, the next best hour is
5 a.m. (8.67% utilization). On a weekend, the next best hour is
3 a.m. (0% utilization), but on weekdays 3 a.m. is actually the
7th busiest hour (18.67% utilization). Here's the whole chart
showing last weeks "best" and "worst" hours (all times are
Pacific Time):

The fifth set of MAGIC! messages - #2000 (Oct. 20, 1990) to
#2499 (Nov. 12, 1990) have been transfered to a downloadable
file. The file is named MAGIC-05.TXT. This means that you can
now go to the file area, download that file, and read the fifth
volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to use the
PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a compressed
version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-05.ZIP and is about
1/2 the size of the full-text version.
Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

I thought that the Penn & Teller special was even more destructive to
the spirit of our art than usual. Doug Henning said it best when he
said: "The art of a magician is to create wonder. If we live with a
sense of wonder, our lives become filled with joy." Granted, P & T do
comedy magic. Harry Anderson does too, but still manages to maintain
a deep respect for our craft. Magic should be inspiring, uplifting and
entertaining. Penn & Teller are vindictive, violent, insulting and
depressing.

audience of about 200. Are you working from a stage or platform? Will

If you can get back to me with these answers, I can probably help you

Re: P&T4G

These so-called "bad boys" of magic need a good spanking!
"DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME" was really a destructive hour with the costs
being borne by hard-working professional magis everywhere. The
senseless exposing of secrets does irreparable harm to the art of
magic. The militant "gang" mentality which they display no different
than painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa...destruction solely for
destruction's sake...for no other reason than "they CAN!"
This is the type of "entertainment" that transforms audiences into
hooting, howling GANGS...encouraging further destruction, in the same
way that Nazi gangs cheered the snowballing rampage of book burnings
and Crystal Night.
That's what's wrong with Penn & Teller.
The fact that they had a network special is what's wrong with network
television...appealing once again to the LOWEST common denominator.
The fact that anyone would watch such sickness is what's wrong with

I jsaw the special last nite and thought the humor was at best juvenile
and the magic, such as it was, poorly done. In fact I thought it was
so poorly done that the explanations were redundant. My 8 year old had
them scooped before they explained. I doubt however that "Magic" was
hurt by these two clowns any more that the theatre is hurt by a play

know and respect quality and recognize a real turkey like P&T for what

Re: P & T 4 G

Throughout history there have been people willing to sell out
their friends and colleagues for a few shekels. They have
become a part of our language -- words like quisling and names
like Judas Iscariot. But Penn and Teller wouldn't understand
that. They think it a mark of their popularity to receive in-
sults like that. They, like the others before them, can't real-
ize that their popularity is not the result of power, but that
they are the cheap, sorry, toys of the audience. They are not
the heroes, they are the stooges. Bits of tissue paper to be
used up and discarded.
What matters to them the thousands of years that magicians have
been faithful to a code of secrecy? The years and lives that
have gone into making a craft? On their network special, "Don't
Try This At Home," they went out of their way to insult the magic
profession, to attempt to prompt it to anger. They begged for
letters from magicians, letters to be used as grist for their
publicity mill.
In truth, there is nothing that can be done. Writing angry
letters to them, publishing editorials in magic magazines, will
only inflate the egos of a couple of cheap hustlers.
There is no legal recourse open to the magic profession. A
boycott of sponsors would probably be too small and would go
unnoticed. I feel sorry for their parents, sorry for their magic
teachers, sorry for the audience, and sorriest for Penn and
Teller. They aren't smart, they are too stupid to know better.

Re: P & T 4 G

Penn and Teller are very good at pointing out what is wrong with
with magic and magicians. They highlight the things about us that
people find annoying. In that respect they do a fairly good
service.
I disagreed strongly with the exposure of the mirror principle.
I felt it was gratuitous and had very little value except to
sensationalize the show. The previews to the show capitalized on
the fact the they would be exposing secrets.
Their socio-political commentary during the marshmallow attack
sequence was brilliant.
The King of the Traps routine was great fun and had some neat
"Moments" with Teller.
The Fire Eating was a priceless send up of David Copperfield.
The "exposure" of the box trick did very little harm in my
opinion.
The bee sequence was a perfect example of Penn and Teller at
their best, denigrating magicians in a unique way without exposing
too many secrets.
The Jane Curtin sequence didn't do a damn thing for me. Was this
a way of satirizing the shows that take clebrities and teach them
to do "Magic"?
The exposure of the truck trick did little damage to the art as
they were not exposing a widely used principle.

The way to counter act the negative effects of Penn and Teller is
to go out and prove them wrong. We aren't just a bunch of "Greasy
guys in tuxedo pulling bunnies from hats." If we can learn from
the criticism that is showered upon us from Penn and Teller then
maybe they will actually do more good than harm to the art of
magic.

Re: HELP IS ON THE WAY

Stanley,
Under the circumstances that you have outlined I think it's
necessary for you to develop a game plan for the next couple of
weeks so your show will be a big success. I did my very first show
on a months notice and it worked out pretty well.
I wouldn't suggest thinking beyond December 16th right now. You had
best focus all your concentration on this show.
First you must address the challenge of trick selection. You need
visual magic that is inexpensive to buy/build. You need material
that requires very little practice for the mechanics of the trick
(this way you can concentrate on the presentation). The following
list of material fits these criterion;
Professors Nightmare
Paper balls over head
Cut and restore Ropes/hanks/paper etc...
Any borrowed item vanished and found elsewhere
Any borrowed item destroyed and restored
Vanishing liquid in newspaper (marketed as In The News for very
                               little dough)
After you have finalized your trick selection you should turn to
routining your act and individual effects. First the act. I would
suggest the following;
1) Fast working visual opener that establishes you as a magician
2) Slightly slower effect. Still visual but aimed at getting your
personality known.
3) Good time for a sucker gag so kids can let off steam.
4) Routine using audience member in one way or another
5) Serious magic trick
6) Perhaps another routine using audience member
7) High impact closer
Tips:
Know EXACTLY what you are going to say at the beginning and end
of your act. If need be, let the middle suffer but ENTER and EXIT on
a strong note.
Go short if need be but NEVER stay on too long.
If the audience is responsive to your jokes then milk them for all
their worth. If they are not responding then truncate your routines
and pick up the pace a bit.
Try to keep the kiddies from forming a group in front of the stage.
If they are with their parents then you have a general audience. If
you have a group of kids in front you have two audience types,
general and children. They dont behave the same way.
Come out before the show and introduce yourself. Get the audience to
know you and like you. If they like you, you have already won the
battle.
If a blatant mistake is made say this, " Ladies and gentlemen,
sometimes mistakes will happen. One just happened. I apologize". Get
on with the show.
Dont use an audience member in your closer. When the trick is
completed it is best that you are onstage alone and ready to take a
bow.
Good luck. Call me if you have any more questions .
                                                  Steve Kucera
                                          the Wine Country Wizard

Re: KIDDIE SHOWS

Hi Richard. I don't believe I will be on a stage but I will have
access to a microphone. The show will be approximately 20 minutes in
length although I haven't timed it yet. What I have so far is this-
Ask to borrow a deck of cards which of course no one has and proceed to
use my own which are invisible. Of course it's the invisible deck
routine. Next a simple half centavo routine where the centavo vanishes
from one hand and appears in the previously empty other hand. Next,
the die box routine. Next an adaptation of a trick I saw Scott Cervine
do where I first produce an apple, core it, wrap it in a paper napkin
and place it on the table. Next, produce a silk, have it initialed,
vanished and reapper in the cored apple. Next a prediction effect
using the card named Joe principle. I will instead have different
dates written on the backs of the cards. The chosen card being
December 25th which matches my prediction. Next, Don Allans comedy egg
can routine where I break an egg into a canister, place a card on top
and invert it onto my helpers head. The card is taken out, held up to
read "DO NOT REMOVE". All ends up well with the canister being filled
with candy. Next the card on forehead and last I will attempt to do a
card location by placing the deck in my inside coat pocket. After two
failures I tell them to concentrate on it and make a big mental picture
and I proceed to bring out a jumbo card of their chosen card. After
receiving (Hopefully!) some applause I will unfold an accordianed sign
from behind the card saying THANK YOU and after a bit more (Again,
Hopefully!) applause I will turn the sign over where it reads MERRY
CHRISTMAS. I have written a number of jokes and gags into the routine
but that is the bare bones of it. Any comments would be GREATLY
appreciated! Thank you very much in advance... Stan

so far. Before the show I plan on going around making animal balloons

on telling them they had to pay close attention to what I was doing to
have the most fun and then asking a few riddles. E.G. Which weighs more

Re: P & T 4 G

The marshmellow attack sequence...a brilliant socio-political
commentary? You feel that a needless attack on much more successful
performers like Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy was warrented or
justified? Perhaps you've been drinking your props again. Penn and
Teller do NOTHING GOOD for magic. They are condescending cretins who
are capitalizing on a certain percentage of the population's affection
for black humor. I have no desire or need to prove Penn & Teller
wrong. Time and fickle audiences will do that. Copperfield, Siegfried
& Roy, and all other performers who honor the proud traditions of our
craft will be around long after Penn & Teller have been reduced to
footnotes in the annals of magic. It's fine if you enjoyed the show,
but PLEASE don't attach any importance, relevance or "lessons to be
learned" to any of it...I doubt Penn & Teller did. They just wish to
be obnoxious...that's their schtick. As I was working tonight (I
perform close-up magic full time), popular lay audience opinion was
wildly against the show. The main thrust of most comments were, "What
is Penn & Teller's problem? Truth be told, the only really magical
sequence was Jane Curtin's ribbon trick (you remember, the one that
didn't do a damn thing for you?). Granted, it was taught to her and
the patter scripted, but it was eloquent and magical. Magic should be
uplifting and inspiring and should reach out to the child (the small
part of us that still thinks that dreams can come true and that
anything is possible) in all of us. Penn & Teller want to tear that
all down. There are thousands of "greasy rabbit pullers" worldwide who
still make children (and adult) eyes gleam at the sight of colored
silks, exotic-looking boxes and yes...rabbits! If magicians "on the
cutting edge" are what you're looking for, check out Rudy Coby, Kevin
James, Vito Lupo, Jeff McBride and others...all gifted performers who
feel no psychotic urge to constantly expose secrets and insult and
ridicule other performers. Penn & Teller are no better than "The
Mystery Magician." Who knows...maybe on their next special, they'll
take some shots at "greasy wine pullers."

Hi Jim,
Just to keep an open mind I went back and looked at my "review" of the
show. I was under the impression that Dante Larsen wanted some
magicians opinions. I presented an opinion before lloking at the others
which definitely left me in the minority.
I didnt expect a debate or I propably wouldnt have posted my
thoughts. But at least let me clear up a few things.
THe brilliants social commentary I referred to was not the attacks on
David Copperfeld et al, but rather their dissertation about television
censors and how there " would be no violence in Detroit" etc...
I have nothing against greasy rabbit pullers myself. I do enjoy magic
on the cutting adge as well as classical magic that is well done.

The comment about me drinking my props again was a personal insult.
Please dont imply that by disagreeing with your opinion I must be out
of my senses or unable to think clearly.

For the record I dont think that P&T are good for magic. I think they
are detrimental but to what degree I am not sure.

And for what it is worth, I will not be going to see them in San
Francisco like I had earlier planned. My decision not to go was based
on what I saw on the T.V. show.I decided that their show is propably
not worth the ticket price.

I am not a Penn and Teller fan by any means. But I gave my honest
opinion and I will stick by it for the time being with an option to
retract with no advance warning.

Re: PENN & TELLER

It is with some amusement, and a great deal of astonishment, that I've
read the various comments on the recent Penn & Teller network special.
While I'm not surprised that the comments have been negative, I am
somewhat startled at the vehemence displayed. Comparing P&T to nazis
goes a bit overboard, I think.
One person wrote, toward condemning the show, that the magic was
"trite." Love them or hate them, the last thing you can say about them
is that their work is trite. In fact, they are constantly breaking new
ground; even if you find their direction offensive, repulsive, or
worse, at least acknowledge that.
Penn & Teller have been deping their work over the past sixteen
years. They are hardly an "overnight" thing, nor are they going to be
a "flash in the pan." I've no idea as to the ratings of this show, but
their theater show has been a great success with both the critics and
the public. They've had major television exposure, and will continue to
fill theaters. Their special was _network_, and produced by one of the
most powerful people in the industry. It was done with the cooperation
of Radio City Music Hall. NBC was obviously pleased enough with the
show to have P&T host "Friday Night Videos" to promote it. They are
currently on a national tour, having done Toronto and Chicago. Their
press has been excellent, and they'll continue to fill theaters.
If their work bothers you, perhaps you should analyze why... and
also ask yourself why so many lay people enthusiastically like them.
Mud-slinging and name-calling accomplishes nothing. Attacking people
who like them accomplishes nothing. Dismissing them is fruitless; they
are not going to disappear; they are not unimportant, and you'd better
devote some effort toward figuring out why.
I'm not suggesting that you should like Penn & Teller; that is a
matter of personal taste, as is every artistic response. But do not
assume that everyone hates them, or insist that every magician
_should_ hate them. They are not nazis, neanderthals, or fools.
One particularly angry message made reference to painting a
moustache on the Mona Lisa. This was meant to be a derogatory metaphor.
However, it happens to be (I presume inadvertently) a direct reference
to Marcel Duchamp, arguably the single most important influence in the
development of 20th century art. Study Duchamp, and you may discover
that there is a place for moustached Monas.
I'm sorry to hear that some people have decided to skip seeing P&T
perform their live show when it comes to their town. I have not seen
the current touring show, but have seen previous editions. Contrary to
what you might expect, there are sequences with great depth, passion,
and even parts that are uplifting.
I was going to stay out of this discussion, but what the hell. I'll
be happy to engage in further conversation on the subject, but I will
ignore any attacks like the ones I've just read.

Re: HORSE APPLES

Magic is unique among the performing arts in that
professionals and amateurs hang out together and enjoy each
others company and usually share "secrets" etc. However, there is
one basic difference...pros use magic as a vehicle to make their
living and amateurs use magic to make their fun...the most
fulfilled perhaps is the pro who's hobby is also magic (as it
seems most pros fit into this catagory).
Unfortunately, it seems P&T do not fit into this
catagory, but I guess its kinda like the music biz....musicians
don't buy many records and there aren't enough magicians to
constantly fill halls...however, look at the top of any show
profession, the top draws don't depend on controversy to rise to
fame and longevity. (examples: Bob Hope, Seigfred & Roy,
Copperfield, Blackstone, Johnny Carson)
Talked with a friend at NBC...said the network was
dismayed by P&Ts scathing attack on others in the biz...perhaps
this is the straw that will break the camels back as far as big
league tv is concerned though heir live show will probably
continue to do well for some years to come.
Our responsibility is to rise above the ground level BS
and continue to foster the kind of information exchange we've
(MAGIC!) become known for. Perhaps P&T should be invited to
perform at a magicians convention so we can see another side of
these guys. I wonder if they'd come if invited. Also, if someone
has their address, wait I do, can send them a flyer on MAGIC! and
invite their participation.
Gloria (the ultimate consumer) watched the P&T special
with me the other night. She noticed the digs against magi and
wondered why they did it also (she's not a magician but is a top
amateur athelete) and feels the special might spell the end of
P&Ts tv career....we'll see.....look what happened to "the dice".
Anyway, I love MAGIC! and magic and the people who make a
difference (no names, but a lot of you are on here). I don't
believe in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, but I do believe in
myself and in my ability to discern the difference between whats
good press and whats bad press. (Be interesting to read the
review in Variety when it comes out to see the jaded reviewers
thought.)
Understand this too, what plays big in Manhattan might
not play at all in Peoria (just coincidence Jon) or Cedar Rapids.
The New York entertainment biz thrives on whats different
and.....theres lots of dirt and violence in the big apple. To
quote Rockman who plays drums for Catch 22 (from the
apple)..."ah, I love New York, smell that dirt"......tabman..

Re: KIDDIE SHOWS

I was thinking instead of starting the show with the invisible deck
routine I could start with the Professors Nightmare. This would lend
itself towards the type of audience I will have better than the
invisible deck if I change the patter. The adults in the crowd will be
either postal letter carriers or spouses of carriers. Every letter
carrier thinks his or her route is too long compared to every other
letter carrier. With this in mind I could have the three ropes
represent different routes. I would show how all routes are really
different but management thinks they are all the same. It is really
just an illusion as I show them to be in fact, all different. What do
you think? Or do you recommend any other openers? Steve Kucera,
another Magic! user suggested I have a fast visual opener. I don't
think I know of any off hand but I'm certainly willing to learn!

Re: HELP IS ON THE WAY

Steve, instead of opening my act with the invisible deck routine, how
about if I did the professors nightmare instead? I came up with a good
patter that will specifically fit that crowd. The adults will be made
up of postal letter carriers or spouses of carriers. One thing they
all have in common is that they think their own routes are too long and
management does not. The three ropes could represent three routes.
Showing them first to be all different and then showing how management
has the illusion they are all the same. They all begin and end at the
same time (represented by the beginning and ends of the ropes). Then
showing the reality that some routes are short, medium and long.
This may not be the fast, visual opener you had in mind. If not I
could do something else to open and I would replace the card on the
forehead routine with the professors nightmare. I really thought I had
one too many card tricks anyway. Tell me what you think! Thanks...
Stan

Re: PENN & TELLER

I had taped the P&T special so I am a little late with my own comments.
After reading everyone elses comments I have to agree in several areas.
1. I think they were detrimental to magic.
2. I wouldn't go to see them if they were playing next door.
I really didn't receive much enjoyment out of the show or much
entertainment value and isn't that why we go to see a show? I thought
maybe I was offended because I love the art and craft of magic too much
to see it muddied, however, even my wife who doesn't care one way or
the other thought them to be in poor taste.
When the question comes up as to why they do it I would have to say it
comes down to one word. MONEY. I do not think they could do anywhere
near as well if they did any other sort of magic. They have found a
tiny niche which fits their own destructive personalities and are
playing it to the hilt. They wouldn't do it if it didn't pay well. I
just hope the public soon tires of it. I have only seen them once and
I know I have already tired of them.

Penn and Teller recently played Toronto, Ontario for two weeks. I did
not go see them but I understand they soldout most nights. Another
several thousand "fans" that have their view of magicians tainted.

Re: NEW FILES

David Sacks has put together an index of Epilogue magazine. There are
two files: E_TITLE.NDX, an index by title, and E_AUTHOR.NDX, by author.
Notice that the filenames have an underline character after the E.
These two files are in the MAGIC! files area and can be downloaded.
Thanks, David!

A reminder:

To reach the files area from the Main Menu:

o Type F for File SubSystem and press the ENTER key.

To list the MAGIC! files from the Files Menu:

   o Type L;13 (that's the letter L followed by a semi-colon [;]
followed by the "MAGIC! number" 13)

   o Press the ENTER key.

Well, David...
I'm sorry to say that I'm not as optimistic as you seem to be.
This, however, is a fine and EXTREMELY RARE example of one of my
opinions which I actually hope will be proven wrong!

Re: MAGIC MANUSCRIPT

My sources tell me that the next issue is the final one.
No big loss. Magazines that are closely tied to a dealer are usually
too biased in their reporting. Who wants to subscribe to an
advertisement? The dealers should be sending that stuff gratis.
I'd like to see more magazines take an independent editorial approach.
You don't see many reviews that pan a trick, book or tape, do you?
And yet, how many of us have drawers, or in some cases ROOMS full of
tricks, books, videos that we have discarded as being useless?
EVERY BOOK, TRICK, AND VIDEO OFFERED BY A DEALER IS NOT NECESSARILY A
WINNER! What editor has the guts to offer the working magi with a
limited budget the VALUABLE information on which to buy AND WHICH TO
AVOID???
Someday, someone is going to realize that a periodical with INTEGRITY
can be successful. I'd like to see some HONEST reporting and HONEST
editorial opinion in print!
THAT IS WHAT MAKES ANNEMAN'S "JINX" STILL SHINE OVER FIFTY YEARS AFTER
IT WAS ORIGINALLY PRINTED!

Re: P&T

I hope this is my last comment on this tripe...
but, for clarification...
I was looking forward to the P&T special for weeks. I set up the VCR
and sat my wife down so we could enjoy it together.
I had no previous axe to grind with P&T...
I've always enjoyed them. I haven't always agreed with their choices,
but so what? I've always enjoyed them.
My opinions expressed regarding their special are admittedly strong and
I stand by them.
Yes, there is a place for moustaches on the mona lisa...but only if you
add your "improvement" to a copy. It's not permissable, in my view to
damage the original.
Penn & Teller's approach is vindictive and hurtful to people who earn
their living performing magic, the "rabbit-pullers," if you must.
Hurting people is not art...nor is it entertainment. (I'm not a boxing
fan, either.)
I'm sure that if Penn & Teller did an expose of a blindfolded walk
through Disney world to find a pair of twins...well, opinions might
differ.
