MAGIC! - 11

The following was compiled from the magician's message section of
MAGIC!(tm). MAGIC! was an electronic communications system for
magicians. Access was free, except for normal telephone company
charges. New registrants were required to leave a comment with
their name, address, phone number and a brief resume of their magic
background to be considered for membership. The material herein
should be treated as confidentially as other magic information.

Re: GRILLED CHEESE

Hey there Tabman,

Lake county is real nice. I don't get up there much but I
will be in the future. My company is handling the marketing
for a new entertainment franchise and Lake Co. is one of
the territories we have. Please give a call or message
when dates become finalized. I will go up there if need be
and of course my house is always welcome to wayward
magicians. I don't have cable though. When I bought the
place I decided against installing it deciding that if I
watch too much t.v. I will propably never be on t.v.
I am not going to make the dessert seminar this year
even though I promised myself I would. I am running the
biz, working the day job, taking dance class as well as
taking concealed weapons training this spring. With so
much going on and a concurrent lack of funds I cant really
see myself getting out to Vegas so soon. But its a sacrifice
that will eventually pay off.
I am also heavy into promoting the north coast robot
boxing association ( the entertainment franchise refered
to earlier). Basically its a full size version of a toy
called rock'em sock'em robots that some of us played as
kids. We have the adult size metal version and we will be
traveling all over the north coast doing tournaments in
bars and sports clubs. Sure it's junk entertaiment
compared to magic, but it will provide me the financial
resources to develop other projects. Besides which, its a
hell of a lot of fun.

Re: CO-OP

Actually the Kool Aid Wizard is not a bad idea. Could be a
corporate gig in my future.

I haven't had a lot of trouble attracting the kiddy market.
Magic at the "grass roots" level is still widely percieved
as nothing more than birthday entertainment. Its up to all
of us to elevate magic and let people know we would be
the perfect entertainment at the next black tie affair etc..

The main marketing challenge of Wine Country Wizardry in the
90's is to show people the real versatility of magical
entertainment. We will continue to do private parties and
conventions as well as continue our work in fund raising,
night clubs, schools, fairs and festivals and WHEREVER THE
HELL ELSE SOMEONE WANTS A MAGICIAN.

My only real competition in this area make the better part
of his living giving lessons and seminars to salespeople. I
have no real problem with this but I get the feeling he is
churning out second rate magicians. He then farms these
clowns ( No offense intended to clowns) out to do private
parties and charges big bucks. I have no fear of competition
but I do worry when I feel something is being done that
harms magic. I worked a gig with some of these guys and when
I went on break they were in the parking lot smoking dope.
Not a great way to maintain a professional image in my
opinion.

So whats new with Stan Lake? Any more stage shows in your
future? I'm doing a gig for some type of printers convention
this weekend and then it looks kind of dry for a while. Time
for me to get out and start hustling those gigs .

Got the issue and looked it over today. Magic Menu is coming along
very well - I like the new format, crisp and lively, and the effects in
there were good ones. By the way, you've mentioned balloons in there.
Are you interested in new designs specifically for resturants? I have
one I'm working up.
Despite the extra lines, I'm leary of "chat." It still manages to tie
up the resources (lines, etc.) and it doesn't result in a history.
Will think about it more, but right now there is no plan to add it to
the system.

Re: NEW MAGIC! SYSTEM

We had a little "burp" in the MAGIC! system Tues. afternoon about 5 p.m.
and for a few minutes calls were going unanswered. This can happen
when one modem on the rotary fails to pick up the call. Until we can
track it down, it may happen again. MAGIC! is here and is working.
So, if you call and the line rings more than twice or three times, call
back in a few minutes. We hope to "debug" the problem soon. Thanks.

Re: HARBIN'S TELEGRAM EFFECT

I came across this great MC gag/effect from an Genii
special on Robert Harbin. I have used the effect many times and
always gets a chuckle. I changed some of the words around to
suit me. Does anyone have any other similar type gags? I think it
is great. And thank Genii magazine for publishing it. Here is the
workings.
You are on stage in the middle of your act, and a voice from
the wings, "Telegram", "Telegram", interupting you. You reply,
"For me!, etc.
You ask a spectator to assist you in reading the letter. Make
sure here that they read it loud and clear. You then can read
it again, stressing the important points and making some fun at
the lines.
As you can see there are two paragraphs, and a division
between some of the words in the lower section. The lower right
section will be the section that will be the reply to the
telegram. I usually mark the sections with a fine colored
pencil, so that I can proceed with the tearing of the telegram
correctly. It begins, "You worry...etc."
You then tell the spectator that the telegram has no meaning
to you and you rip it into four pieces. You hold two pieces in
each hand, and ask the spectator to point to a hand. You then
remove the undesired pieces, and hold a piece in each hand. You
ask them to point to a piece. You can have some fun with the
lines here. "By the way when is the last time you had a piece,
etc.?"
You the read aloud the reply, from the torn telegram. I hope
you enjoy it. Do you know of any similar effects?

Re: TOP ... BOOKS

-The following is an article that Bill Palmer wrote for the local
newsletter, of which I am the editor. I had asked him to make a list
of the Great Books of Magic.

Now for the 12 (or so ) Great Books of Magic. (These are not
necessarily in order of greatness!)

1--The Tarbell Course in Magic

2--The Expert at the Card Table by Erdnase (I prefer the Vernon-Caveney
edition called "Revelations." This is just personal preference.)

3--Modern Coin Magic by J.B. Bobo

4--The Fitzkee Trilogy (The Trick Brain, Magic by Misdirection,
Showmanship for Magicians) by Dariel Fitzkee

5--Magic {subtitled "Stage Illusions and Scientific Diversions
Including Trick Photography"} (pub 1897) available in paperback from
Dover.

6--Greater Magic

7--The Experience of Magic by Burger

-8--The Royal Road to Card Magic (Hugard and Braue)

9--The Discoverie of Witchcraft by Reginald Scot (simply because it is
the oldest easily available book in English on the subject--it is
available in a Dover reprint. It is the second oldest book in English
about magic)

10--Magic and Showmanship, a Handbook for Conjurors, by Henning Nelms

11--Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic.

12--The New Makeup of Magic by Mickey Hades

The new Stewart James book looks very good, but I haven't had a chance
to see what all is in it, so I can't put it on the list yet. There are
several other good books that would be good candidates, too, such as
the John Scarne books, the Hoffman books, Illustrated Magic, Corinda's
Thirteen Steps to Mentalism, Annemann's Practical Mental Effects, and
I hate to have to leave out any really good book.

A really good list of 12 great magic books should have about 30 books
on it! Hope this provides food for thought!

Re: CO-OP

Well I must have done better than I thought at the postal function
since they are still talking about it. They want me again for their
next Christmas party. I haven't done any more stage shows but I did
entertain a womens club my wife belongs to and all of the ladies with
children got my card to do birthday shows for them. I have already
gotten a couple of requests but I decided to turn them down. I know
this is going to sound strange but the parties would have conflicted
with a Bruce Cervon lecture that I didn't want to miss. I didn't tell
them that though, I just said I was already busy on that date. I think
it seems strange since one of the reasons I am pursuing magic is for
the extra income it can bring and yet when I have a chance to make some
I am off learning more magic! At this rate I will one day know a lot
but have nothing to show for it. I have been spending a lot of my
vacation time this week down at the Castle library putting together a
new childrens act since that is what I have had the most demand for.
I would then like to have a good walk around routine and stage or
parlour type act. Right now I just know a lot of disjointed effects so
I've come to learn that knowing the effects is only part of what makes
up the show. I still have a lot of work to do!

Re: PERFORMANCE FEES

Rikker -->
Some more thoughts on getting more money for an act based
on my experience as a artist manager for the past five years.
        - the performance fee is a perceived thing, and most
buyers suspect you get what you pay for.
        - "regional" acts get more money than "local" acts so
go regional from the getgo. (its perception remember)
        - look, feel, and be the part when presenting yourself to
potential buyers. Most buy on "look and feel". You
can't put your finger on feel, but look can take you
about 60% there. This includes promo, dress, even your
          mode of transportation.
        - if you negotiate your fee down, do it from a point of
strength, always getting some concession from the
buyer, even if it is simply a great letter of
          recommendation.
        - the people who can "afford" you have a fax machine.
        - Get S. Smith's book; "Selling Your Act With Letters."
        - develop a mailing list even if you start with only one
          name.
        - get some press and do regular mailings to your list.
        - get a gig in a tv commercial.
        - join a show business association and sincerely help
those at the top, but don't "break in line."
        - get Michael Ammar's tape; "Negotiating Higher
          Performance Fees."
        - strive to "get along" with everybody, but don't get
pushed around by the "users" (one must give to receive
and these people don't know that part).
        - Remember that the ENTERTAINER has a most difficult and
specialized function and is entitled to be justly
compensated, but don't hesitate to pay your agent, etc..
        - develop a "No Problem!" attitude.
        - have the Doug Henning levitation poster nicely framed
hanging in view of your desk (optional, but look for a
          role model
Speaking of Mr. Henning I had dinner with Doug in Houston
(1970) after a TM seminar. Found him most delightful and
insightful. He did magic and was pushing the TM lifestyle which
eventually helped him achieve great success.
I'm not pushing TM here. Tried that levitation biz just
once and got scared s__tless when I looked down and was 500 feet
above the log cabin I lived in in the Massachusetts hills west of
Amherst. I was about a half mile down the road heading in to
Delano's Bar to have a drink before I realized I was up in the
air in the winter in my underwear.
        - Have a GREAT TIME! (very important)
                                your friend,
                               _|_ |_

Glad you talked to Ray Mertz. He really knows how to "put
it on the pavement." Its thrilling to watch him work a bar or
table. Unlike Doc Eason who works the entire bar end to end, Ray
works more intimately for those who can gather around his closeup
pad which he moves around to suit the situation. He speaks
quietly and people strain to hear every word. He always leaves em
laughing.
Thanks for the book info, both the "boners book list" and
the recommendation on the Burger books. "Performance of...."
arrived a couple of daze ago, but haven't had time to get into it

also recommended it for the philosophical approach of which I am

literature simultaneously. Makes one feel oh, so MANLY.....

Thanks for sharing the "secret something that makes it work" on the
board. It's definitely one of those things that will be fun to tease
those in the know with. There's nothing more fun than driving another
cardition crazy. I don't know if I would have let it out or not. Time
will tell if MAGIC! participants will appreciate your openness and
respect the source. Hope so ... anyway - "mums the word" in Nashville.
If I see this advertised I'll consider trading in my close-up case and
going back to music.
I don't do a lot of public shows, mostly birthday parties to help
support my habit of buying gadgets. I do love to get togethers with
other finger flinger types, so we can amaze each other, criticize
constructivly, and generally tell each other how great we are. MAGIC!
will let us do that around the world now. Ain't computers wunderfull!
The first MAGIC! luncheon at the Castle sounds like a blast. Wish I
could make it. Airfare from Nashville would be around $600, plus
taxi's, hotel, not to forget lunch (too long a trip to eat and run).
Generally I hold lunch to about 5 or 6 bucks anyhow, so maybe next
year. Would like to hear how it turns out. One of these days I'd like
to meet you and others I know by name on the board. Ever attend
conventions on the east side?
Got to go, but trying to log on at least every 2 or 3 days, so until we

Re: RECRUITING FOR MAGIC!

I've been a big fan of Magic! since it started, and was on the CIS
system when it was active (or at least kinda active...) and my
enthusiasm has hopefully, encouraged others to sign on.
There are two magicians in particular, both full time professionals
that live in Austin, that I have been sharing the messages with.
One, Michael Ammar has already announced his intention to get on
as soon as he lands in town long enough to figure out how to use
the modem and communications program he has for his computer. (he left
today for Vegas, then will be in California later this month on lecture
tour). Hopefully, especially with some of the other users of this
board giving him some not so gentle prodding, he will join us here.
The other is Kent Cummins, whose name may not a household word
in the Magic! community -- although he has been extremely active in
magic for more than 40 years (he turned 48 on January 6th). Kent is
currently president of Assembly 206 of SAM, as well as the Gulf Coast
Regional Vice-President SAM. He is probably best known in this
area as the auctioneer for the IBM Ring 60 (Austin) famous annual Magic
auction, which grossed over $26,000 last February. Kent is also a past
Pres. of IBM RIng 60, past pres. of TAOM, and of the Armed Forces
Magician Association. In addition to being a full time magician,
he lectures on Management and Marketing, and has written numerous
articles on Club Management for a number of publications. Kent has
read every messge that has been on the board, and has started
participated by making a direct contribution to the Sysop to help
with the costs of the system. He has been computer shopping since
Christmas, and hopeully we will have him online in a few weeks.

Re: P.C.A.M. '91

Just got back from my SAM meeting. One of the major points brought
up was the upcoming P.C.A.M. convention. SAM #112 is hosting it in
Concord, California (Just 40 miles from San Francisco). We are still
looking for conventioneers. The convention will be at the Concord
Hilton between June 19-22. If you register before Jan 30, 1991, you can
still save $10. If you wish to register, send the following info:

Name(s): Date:
Badge Name(s) (If different):
Address: City:
State: ZIP: Phone:
PCAM Club Affiliation:
# of Registrants: Adults: Juniors: (Only $45 each!)

Checks should be payable to PCAM '91 and sent to:

Loren Lind, Registrar
rt2423 Charlotte Ave.
Concord, CA 94518

The host club (SAM #112) is shooting for a limit of about 300 people
and has already passed the 165 mark! After Jan 30, 1991, the price will
go up to $95. Send it in before and save $10!

One nice thing about these PCAM conventions is that they are small and
relatively informal. Arrangements are being made so that conventioneers
will get to spend as much time with the performers personally as
possible. Expected performers are: Carl Ballantine, Chuck Jones, and an
apparently super-secret guest to be announced as soon as he/she is
confirmed! Hope to see you there!

Re: KARRELL FOX

Pete, and All
Heard at the office (Inside Magic) today that Karrell Fox did
indeed have a heart attack. As of this afternoon he is in intensive
care. Stan spoke to the people around Karrell and they are
optimistic that Karrell will make a complete recovery.
At this point, he can`t receive flowers or calls. They did say he would
enjoy receiving cards. As a little extra bonus, we're enclosing
playing cards in the "get well" cards with a note to the effect
that we figured they wouldn`t allow him cards so we're smuggling
some in to him. The more obscure the playing cards, the more fun.
Address cards to:

Yes, it would be a good idea to note the type of computer in the
description that you are asked to provide after the file has been
uploaded. I'm behind in my chores and will be looking asap. Files
uploaded to MAGIC! should generally be of two types - 1) Specific to
magic and magicians - text articles or programs for or related to
magic. 2) Programs that will help in the effective use of MAGIC! -
such as compression programs like Zip or graphics programs that will
display PCX files. Thanks for your uploads and your patience.

Thanks for your message! Appreciate the info and the address. Here's
another way to get messages to Karrell Fox. We are going to
temporarily register him as a MAGIC! member. On Wednesday, January

send either public or private messages) and forward them to him. This
way he will know that the members of MAGIC! are thinking of him.
So, while you are thinking of it - send a message to Karrell Fox here

Did anyone notice that we have now passed the FIVE THOUSAND message
mark? Message 5000 was from Steve Kucera to Tabby Crabb and it was

"Grilled Cheese."

In about nine months MAGIC! members have sent five thousand messages
totalling about 2.5 Megabytes of magic information! I believe there
are approximately 2,500 characters to a typewritten page, single
spaced, so that amounts to about ONE THOUSAND typed pages!

KARRELL FOX is now a "non-modem" member of MAGIC! This means that
you can send your get well wishes (public or private) to him, just like
to any other MAGIC! member. On Wednesday, January 16th, I will collect
all of the messages addressed to Karrell and send them to him.

Here's an easy way to send a message to Karrell -- If you see a message
addressed to him, use the menu at the end of the message to select A
for Append (NOT R for Reply). Append will add your message to the one
you tie on to and will automagically address it to Karrell.

Let's let him know that MAGIC! cares!

Re: SHELLS

Thanks for the welcome Jim. Following you will find the
information that you requested concerning the Walnut Shells
(and anyone else who is interested).
The shells are handmade from REAL walnuts and designed to work
on any surface...whether padded or not. I have worked the shells
on flat surfaces, bar tops (even wet), newspapers and of course
close-up pads. The shells and peas work together to form an
almost "automatic" shell. The shells are covered in urethane so
that they will last longer and can be worked under adverse
conditions, and of course they are correctly weighted (putty).
The pea is of a special makeup, taught to me by Harry Anderson.
It is latex covered and works much like a little sponge ball,
but it looks like a "real pea!".
Both Harry and Billy McComb have a set of the shells (as well as
many magicians - they were a complete sell-out at the last
Castle swapmeet), they have both commented on the nice
workmanship and the ease of use. Upon recieveing a set, Tommy
Wonder (Jos Bema), who had never worked the shells before, was
performing with them as if he had been doing them for years.
The set comes with three shells and a pea, plus instructions on
the care and use (sorry, no routines as of yet - but they are
readily available from your nearest dealer, or they can write me
and I'll give them some info. on where to find them.). I also
have extra peas available.
Following are prices and ordering information:
Shells (3) and Pea (1) set
                               $25.00
                           plus $2.00 P/H

                           Extra Peas (3)
                               $5.00
                           plus $1.00 P/H

                           If ordering both just
                           $2.00 P/H
                           Delivery in approx. 3 weeks

They can order from:

everyone off visit grandma and stuff, but let's run it up the flagpole

in 88. Super closeup magic. Reminds me ... I still have tried a topit.
The best story he told was vanishing a spoonfull of mashed potatos at
a table, when a lady insisted "If your so good, vanish this". Maybe
thats where he picked up the line at the end of his cups and balls
routine. "This spuds for you". Ut O (four lines back .. meant to say
still have not tried a topit).
Sorry about the newsletters - the only club doing one now is the FCM.
Both the IBM and SAM are changing formats this year. All last year we
had open meetings, meaning anyone could come and get some free
entertainment. Two problems 1. No incentive to join the club. Kinda
hard to get good lecturers with no tresury. 2. In my mind most
important is exposing magic to not so serious magicians(?). Anyway this
year 8 of the meetings will be closed to non IBM/SAM and non club
members. We do have an excellent secretary (John Morris) who writes the
Ring 37 reports. You might enjoy going thru the last year or Linking
Ring. At least that would give you some insight into what goes on at
the meetings. Good talking at you ..... Later RS

RING 21's policy is that we will try to schedule lectures on a meeting
night but when the lectures come thru town on an off night or the
lecture is not of interest to the club as a whole then we will have a
SPECIAL LECTURE. The Ammar lecture just could not be scheduled on a
meeting night so we are having a Special Lecture for those interested.
As with any lecture the magic or MAGIC! public is always welcome and

Sounds like a number of MAGIC! members will be attending the Ammar
lectures, either at 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. It may not be the offical MAGIC!
button, since those will "premier" at the MAGIC! luncheon on the 25th,
but I'll try to wear something distinctive so we can all find each
other.
Also, I'm told that Ammar needs one more prod to get him on here, so
maybe each member should remind him to sign on to MAGIC!

Re: PONSIN ON CONJURING

JB...Gotta coupla questions for ya if you've gotta minit.
I'm referring to your reprint of the PONSIN ON CONJURING
translation by S.S. Sharpe. (Thanks for making this lowcost
reprint available.) I've spent the past coupla evenings studying
"Ponsin" and have come away feeling that this is required reading
for anyone seriously interested in magic. In the Forward section,
which I presume was penned by Mr. Sharpe, reference is made to
the Hoffmann book MODERN MAGIC and as suggested, I read Ponsin
with Modern magic close at hand for reference as Mr. Sharpe said
he left out much description of effect, etc as it was covered in
the Hoffmann book which was published several years after.
My question is this....in leaving out certain overlapping
descriptive passages from the original, Sharpe stated he did this
to avoid repetition and to condense the original (assuming I
understand correctly) book which was published in 1858 and
borrowed from the Magic Circle Library; just how much did he
(Sharpe) leave out (pagewise/percentage wise) from the original
book which was originally published in French?
With an original English edition (Sharpe) of 300 plus
your 2nd edition of 500 this makes only 800 English language
books available. Now, of course, I'll have to try to find a
Sharpe 1st ed. for the library. Are there any of the 2nd. still
available?
While the Busby Edition has been on my shelves for
bettern two years, I've only recently gotten to it and after
first reading realize it belongs in any library which places
credence on Hoffmann's work. Thanks again........tc

Wasn't aware of the O'Dowd, MUM article about the books.
I was so broke a few years ago I had to let my SAM (first joined
late 60s) membership lapse for a coupla years and missed those
issues; however......
Howie indroduced me to Mike at CEMK (thanks again HS) and
we had breakfast together each morning as Mike was staying at
same hotel. Mike and I "hit it off" and found many common
interests (Irish Music, etc) and have planned a tin whistle duet
for the next CEMK (probably in the parking lot).......anyhou...Mike
and I have been corresponding so I'll send him up the compilation
from here (will be uploading the list from MAGIC! to MAGIC! over
the weekend as I've about finished it) and solicit his comments
and criticism........thanks for the comeback, goodbuddy...
Great story on Houston's magic in last MUM. Enjoyed
seeing photo of your pard, Richard Hatch....plus Bill Palmer whom
I remember from the early 70s when he played banjo around town.
One night at a club I saw Bill pull the banjo out of a kids hands
and show the kid how to play. I never moved a muscle, but shoulda
grabbed the banjo and blown him away, but I didn't. I was hot
banjo and pedal steel in the Medicine Wheel days (1972-75) of the
Texas Opry House. Gotta say that Bill used to do a mean Glorpy
though. He looked pretty cool in his "Merlin" outfit. Was that a
crystal ball in his thumb tip?

I have a pal, who is now undercover in Las Vegas who could SORT decks

Re: RISING CARD

My opening trick at close up shows for Magicians was a
little known item, using a BORROWED DECK OF CARDS, and a well-
known old gimmick that I will describe later.
I would approach the table seemingly with NO PROPS. Explain
my stuff was lost and say "I would like to borrow a fairly un-
ruined deck of cards, no crimps, gaffs, no DF cards, and in a
reasonably clean case..."
I would emphasize that I did not arrange this, I didn't want
anyone that knew me to supply the cards.
Then after several members of the audience hold up cards,
I would ask someone to select the person to loan the deck to me.
I would say, "I don't want to even touch the cards, so give them
to Charlie there, and Charlie, try to shuffle them without
bending them or dropping them of the table, then spread them out
on the table, please. And then have Fred here, point to any card
-- well, you can touch it, matter of fact, pull it out of the
spread, away from the deck."
Now, I would say, "I never touch the cards!" And then pick
up the card case, pick up the cards and put them all (except for
the selected card) back into the case.
I would say, "You shuffled them, you took a card, and
remember I never touched the cards (I am holding them, in the
case) -- Fred, may I have the card." I would get the selected
card and place it somewhere in the cased deck, near the middle.
An explanation of what has taken place is BRIEFLY done, and
while holding the pack, in its case, by a lower corner, the
selected card would rise out of the deck, nearly its full length.
At this point I would ask someone (selectee if close enough)
to take the card, and then toss the deck to the person it was
borrowed from.
Trick is over. There is nothing. The deck is clean.
How? I should have you call and charge for this...
Well you had a hint. It is the catgut loop gimmick for the
levitating pencil. You need to practice natural handling, etc.
but all you do is put the loop over the top of the deck and when
you insert the selected card it pushes the loop down. So, when
you want it to rise, relax the grip the elastic pulls the loop
and lifts the card. You let the loop zip up your sleeve when you
are done and take your standing ovation.
Maven, et al, might know the origin of same. I don't recall
where it came from. I do know that after it was around (I had
been doing it for over a year) Larry Jennings circulated an
underground mss with his handling, which had a few subtleties,
like closing the case (but I didn't bother, it isn't necessary).
ONCE AGAIN... LET'S KEEP THIS ONE TO OURSELVES HERE ON
MAGIC!
And, after you work it a few times for yourself, let me know
what you think of it.

Re: QUESTIONS?

Here's a question (several actually) for any historians, online.

Did anyone do the card in zippered wallet prior to the (Ed)
Balducci wallet? I know the LePaul card in envelope was probably
the first, right? ?

Although I think it was Edward Victor that found a selected card
between a packet of four aces that he had encased with a rubber
band and placed into a weskit (vest) pocket. Was this first?

Who did the first version of the Sub Trunk? Attributed to
Houdini.

Who was first to do the straight jacket escape suspended from a
rope/cable/chain -- anything -- upside down?

Does anybody have the gaff for the Chinese popcorn trick?
Probably the most baffling effect THIS PERSON has seen. (I still
don't know how it is done and have seen it several times).

Was it Harold Sterling that devised (I know he sold it) the famed
"Short and Long Rope Trick"?

Re: LETTERMAN/KRESKIN

Friday night, last 15 minutes of Letterman, Kreskin on did a
killer card trick to open and newspaper test and closed with
Letterman grabbing a dozen cards and the Amazing Kreskin naming
all the cards... Si Stebbin lives! Or maybe the Paul Fox
Gimmick... anywayif any of you get this tonight on time and wanna

see Kreskin with Letterman, it was in the last 15 minutes. You
see it is 10:15 Calif. time, but I caught it just now via
satellite. Gee I could stay up late and watch it again... nah...
G'nite all.

Just to get a little more value for this call... I have seen
Kreskin at a University Campus get 3 standing ovations during his
one man evening shows. One was for the Linking Finger Rings.
Proving skill not required. HIS SELL did it. No fancy moves, just
held the rings in his FIST -- the claim of being real magic -- is
what sold it. He sold it beautifully. The second Standing O, was
when he was doing the old Dr. Q. Hypnotic act. Another great act
that in the "right" hands is a stopper.

If you ever see Dominique Webb do his hyp act you will freak. He
opens with a stooge (among other volunteers) and runs a long
skewer through the guys cheek! This scares off half the onstage
vlunteers and he winds up with great subjects and really works
them beautifully. Better get this online so you might see Amazing
(that is is first name, isn't it?)

The gimmick is variously known as "Dual Control," "The Loop" &c. It has
a lengthy history which unquestionably predates the rodentlike English
dealer who claims to have invented it.
In the mid-sixties, Jerry Lubin of New York realized that the gaff
could be used for a card rise in addition to its standard application
for "animal magnetism" effects. He marketed it under the title
"Amazing" and sold it for (if memory serves) $1.25.

Re: TOPBOOKS.TXT

I've uploaded the current version of the "Ten Foot
Bookshelf" to the FILES 13 area. It should be available ina few
daze after the sysop finds a slot for it and puts it in the
directory. I've done this to reduce screentime for those who are
not interested. For anyone interested in this information it is a
small file (less than 7k) and should download rapidly.
I would be interested in a continuous update so any books
being released in the future can be added as recommended as well
as gems we missed along the way. BTW, I vow to never limit any of
you to ten or a hundred of anything ever again......tc

Hi Karrell,

Pete Biro told us you were "under the weather" and I
wanted to add my get well wishes to those of your other friends
in Magic.

From "Milky The Clown" to the "King of Korn" the trail
you're still blazing is long and wide. You've left many signs and
maps and encourage others to follow your path through your
lowcost booklets and hardcover books you continue to share what
you've learned with other magicians.

This can be a time to pause and reflect;to seize the
opportunity for yet another trail to blaze as your readers await
anxiously for more from the pen that brought us "For My Next
Trick."

Though we've never met, your work graces the shelves of
The Old Principal's House Library along with hundreds of volumes
from Hoffmann, Okito, Maven, Busby and scores of others

Between you and Michael Ammar, ya'll put West Virginia
on the map as a most magical place to be from.

                                Get well soon,

Maven-San: Thanks for your great recall on Jerry Lubin's AMAZING.
That was IT -- and YES, I too used to have the setup in several
coats. Also used to have Topits sewn into a few as well.

How about the Jack Miller Holdout? Did you ever work with that
great item? I know Howie Schwarzman used to do a lecture with it.
I used to use it for the Egg Bag.

You reminded me, with the name Lubin, of what seems like another
lifetime when I used to go to N.Y. several times a year and hang
out with him, Sam Schwartz, Willie Schneider, Dave Lederman, Bob
Elliott, and several others at the New York Roundtable... then
the "Cafeteria".

Most of the trips usually wound up with me dining with either Al
Flosso or Slydini -- getting lots of really great help from Tony
and props, posters and stories from Flosso.

Re: CUT IT!!!

Here's a wrinkle on the cut/restored rope you might like to try
that eliminates the standard move of gripping the rope behind
your palm as you bring up the loop from the bottom. IE: you have
the rope in left hand, held at the two end, the middle hangs
below and you bring up the bottom of the loop and switch as you
bring a loop up into view to cut the rope.

I never liked this move and one day, working with the late Red
Henning, of Santa Rose, Calif., this handling evolved. I not only
use it for a cut/restored, but it is perfect to set up, and cut
the correct pieces for the Professor's Nightmare. This is the
beginning sequence for the Nemo Rope trick that Ken Brooke was
going to market (my routine) before he died. It was never
released. The full routine is my lead in, Roger Sylwester's
Professor's Incubus and the Conway rope trick ending. You start
with one length of rope, cut into three equall, then un-equall
pieces and wind up at the conclusion with one piece of rope.

For now, the opening move to cut without switching any loops.

Hold the length of rope in your left hand. (For sake of
description only I will tell you to hold your hand stiff and
flat, but in actual practice you relax and grip things
naturally).

The left hand is flat, palm to you, the rope sticks above the
left hand about two inches and his held in place by the left
thumb. Right hand grasps the other end (the bottom end, hanging
down) brings it up an simply lays it across the rope in the left
hend -- the left thumb opens slightly to let the lower end lay
across and angled up and to the left of the original end. Make
sure the two ends stick up above the left hand about the same
length.

So far all you have done is to hold up a piece of rope and bring
the lower end up so both ends are gripped with the left hand. All
you have to make sure you have done is to cross the ropes.

Here is the move-- and it is natural, needs no cover -- just do
it openly. Left 2nd, 3rd and pinky fingers curl around the "away
from you" end (the originally gripped end) of the rope. The
crossed point of the ropes is now gripped by the left index
finger and thumb. That is it. Nothing has been done, really.

All you now do is to grip the top right end and pull it
downwards. A loop will be formed, you should pull that end down
so that it is about double the distance down than the bottom of
the loop.

If you cut the rope at the top of the loop a couple of inches
from your fingers (to the right) it is done. The loose end drops
down and you are in the familiar position of a small loop at the
top with two ends sticking up and two long pieces hanging down.
It is most likely they will be different lengths, so it is a more
natural lead in to the Short and Long rope routine of Harold
Sterling. Lets hope you bought the trick from Sterling and have
the rights to do it and didn't start doing it because you saw so
many others doing it you figured it was public domain!!

To use the same move to get into the Professor's Nightmare, when
you pull the piece downward, you stop about 2 inches below the
loop at the bottom, cut the top loop as usual, then cut the
bottom loop and you now have all the correct length pieces --
long, medium and short. Exactly the right lengths.

Re: PAUL DANIELS SHOW 2

Yesterday evening we had the 2nd of the Paul Daniels series on
British TV.
.
A review.....
.
OPENING Cut & restored silk, in folded paper/carton sheet.
=======   Simultaneously with Debby (Wife/assistent).
It's the version where the other side moves when you
          pull to one end.
.
CARDS A chosen signed card, appears inside glass top-cover of
=====     the table...
.
'MENTAL' A (female) spectator thinks of a card (outof a pile...).
======== Paul explains that by physical contact he get a picture of
          the card.
So he asks the girl to kiss him. (visibable not willing...)
She does so and the though of card has a pair of lips on the
          back.
.
NEXT A banknote is borrowed, a corner is torn off, and the bill is
==== put in an envelop. To show that nothing else is in the
envelop
a candle is put behind it (you probably see where this is
          leading to...).
The candle is blown out, and while Paul talks it (the candle)
lits again and the envelop is burned (big drama.....).
Finally the bill is found in a shooting gallery wher the
spectator is asked to shoot a balloon. After failing several
times (all prizes are shot as well as a stage technician,
dropping out of the air..) the balloon is hit and THE back-
          note is retrieved.
.
FINALE A bit hard to explain.... A camel is tied on a rope that
====== leads through a large needle (at least the eye of it..).
The rope is held by 2 spectators, and the camel is covered.
When the covered is removed, the camel is standing at the
other side of the needle. (I hope you see the effect..).
.
Finally I would say this show was less magical surprising as last
weeks show, but still ca 5 shows to go.....See you next week.
.
Regards,
Arnaud.

Re: A REAL ILLUSION?

Went down to Hollywood magic today. Picked up Tenyo's MOONSPINNER.
For those of you who haven't seen it in action, I'd suggest you do!
Basically it's another coin paddle effect. But OH what an effect!
The paddle is circular, about 2" in diameter, and covered with a
"hypnotic" design. The handle of the paddle is also about 2" long, and
is very easy to manipulate. The effect: A quarter is placed on the
face of the paddle. The magician then moves the paddle in a circular
motion--the quarter is seen sliding on the face of the paddle. Then,
slowly, the circular motions are slowed, and stopped, and the quarter
visibly vanishes into nothingness. A layman the effect was being shown
to, FELL off the stool he was sitting on when the quarter vanished!
Of course, you can reverse the process and produce instead of vanish.

You need something for your next "walkaround"? This is it! I'm always
on the look-out for a cute effect, and I consider this one a real gem.

After 15 years in the Air Force the most important things to learn in

   1. I would like two beers please.
   2. Are you married.
   3. Are you happily married?
   4. Where is the bathroom?
This list is not in order of importance. The problem is that after you

The entrance to Klostermann's magic room using the mine

Houdini is "bad".

Guess I'll have to add the Roth Coin Book to the library.
Haven't been into coins much (except to spend them) and had only
a coupla editions of the Bobo book and Hugard stuff. Appreciate
the info and know it will be a valuable addition for years to
come. I have leaned so toward the classics that I missed a lotta
great contemporary books during the eighties while I was looking
for Sr. Blitz, etc. MAGIC! has made the difference for me and it
has me feeling creative again (feels quite good) instead of
blowing dust off forgotten tomes and sneezing alot.......

Re: MUSIC CITY MAGIC

Maybe NewYears isn't exactly the right time, but during
the winter months probably before the florida convention. I'd
like to try to pull from Georgia (Rick Ruhl might help us).
Alabama, and KY too. Keep it small (around 100 attendees if poss)
and try ???!!! to get it to break even. Do it at the Vandy
Holiday Inn or maybe the Hall of Fame cause of the bar (used to
be my "home away from home"). Select lecturers who wouldn't
normally be in the area and treat them like kings so they'd wanna
stay around the whole weekend.
Definately wouldn't wanna conflict with any activities
sponsored by any of the Nashville magic clubs, but would want
them involved if they desire. Winter 1992 would probably give us
enuf time to get it all worked out.
Once initiated, and if successful, it would have to be an
annual event and something we could look forward too for years to
come.
I haven't put a pencil to the figures yet, but plan on
underwriting the costs to guarantee success. The biggest problem
with any event is pulling the participants, so I would want to
make this the best conclave in the southeast and appreciate your
offer of help....I'll count on it.
With many of us on MAGIC! from the east and southeast and
growing, I would want to incorporate MAGIC! into the scheme of
things. Picking the right weekend and publicizing it correctly is
critical to our success.
David Allen Coe is into magic. Maybe we could get Coe and
his band to do a Saturday night show or something. Lots to think
about..........talk at ya later....tabman..
Plus Biro sed he'd come for the blackeyed peas and gritz.

Re: TORN

Rather a strange comment; Dai Vernon did not invent Oil & Water. The
plot of magical separation goes back perhaps to Hofzinser, although
this is not entirely clear, but there are examples of related items in
print at least as far back as the 1920s (e.g., Leslie Guest). The one
most often credited with creating the plot is Ed Marlo, and though it
is clear he wasn't the first to devise a color separation routine, he
did introduce the patter premise of oil and water not mixing.

Re: PREDICTION CHEST

With the loss of Tannen's Magic Manuscript I was one of those with an
unexpired subscription. With my credit I ordered London's Prediction
Chest Manuscript. That item is discontinued and none other in the book
is even close. Does any one have either a source where the original
manuscript can be found/bought or a reference where this kind of trick
is written up.
.
Basicall the effect is that a blank piece of paper is notorized and
sealed in a notorized cardboard folder stapled shut that is then sealed
in an envelope with a statement from the notary attesting to what was
done. This is placed in a chest and sent to the target group in
advance of the show. Then in a very fair manner the latest headline or
other predicted notice is found written on the paper.
.
Also, since Magic Manuscript is defunct the comment seem to indicate
that Genii is very good and better than MM ever was. Where and how do
you subscribe.
.
On a different matter, just before Christmas I bought a Stevens tape of
Shiego Takagi doing rope magic. I have seen more showmanship from
rocks, but boy was he good. Also, while he may have been dull the tape
is so detailed and repetious that you can practice right along with him
and not miss a beat. We have certainly lost a true talent for
teaching.

Re: TOP "TEN" BOOKS

I don't know if it's too late, but...Well here's my list of top "10"
books (I tried everything I could to limit it to 10 but this is the
best I could do). My criteria was which books would I keep if "forced"
to give up all but a few of my books.

The Tarbell Course in Magic
The Expert at the Card Table - Erdnase
Modern Coin Magic - Bobo
Greater Magic
The Royal Road to Card Magic - Hugard and Braue
The Amateur Magicians Handbook - Hay
The Art of Magic - Downs
Close-up Card Magic - Lorayne
any Vernon book (The Dai Vernon Book of Magic - Ganson,
Inner Secrets Card series, Vernon Chronicles (Vol 1-3),
  etc.)
Expert Card Technique - Hugard & Braue
The Fine Art of Magic - Kaplan
Jinx
Stars of Magic

Here are some of the others I considered but for one reason or another
decided not to include in the above. I would also recommend any of
these books to someone looking for good books:
Encore III - Ammar
Illustrated Magic - Ottakar Fischer
several of the Ed Marlo books (e.g. The Cardician)
The Magic of J.N. Hofsinser
Theatrical Close-up - Samelson
Stewart James in Print - James
Encyclopedia of Magic and Magicians - Waters
Focus - Phil Goldstein
any of Goldstein's lisp series of books
the Eugene Burger books
the Larry Jennings books
The Secrets of Brother Hamman - Kaufman
The Commercial Magic Of J.C. Wagner - Maxwell
Tricks from the Tree Top - Walker
the Scarne books
Encyclopedic Dictionary of Magic (Vol 1-2) - Whaley
Who's Who in Magic - Whaley
Expert Coin Magic - Roth

Hope that gives food for thought.

You mentioned your interest in Okito and in his ability
to craft magic apparatus from wood and your subsequent attempts
at apparatus building yourself.
Likewise, I feel the same pull toward Okito and his
memories. Let me recommend OKITO ON MAGIC if you haven't read it.
First published in 1952 it is still available as well as an
excellent reprint from Magic, Inc. Seems I remember Charlie had
the reprint on his book list for around ten bucks.
I'm interested to know if you've since done any apparatus
building as this is an area of interest we share? I started
building my way through Modern Magic a coupla years ago. At first
my efforts were less than perfect, but after considerable
practice I'm getting the hang of it to the point where I'm
considering offering some of my Hoffmann Boxes(tm) on a limited
basis through ads in Genii to magicians who appreciate that sort
of thing.
I've been building with mahogany, walnut and cherry; but
will soon buy a supply of Honduran rosewood and "go for it." I
guess the biggest thing in my way right now is the "war" and
uncertainty of when we'll be able to move to the farm in
Tennessee since adv don't appear for a coupla months after the
die is cast (so to speak) and the address would perhaps change
before then. If my wife has to go to war, I'll probably wait it
out here at Spring Hill and can make some sorta decision then...

Re: YOUR UNCLE

I just read a book from a respected author who calls
writers and magicians who steal material from the acts of others,
scoundrels in one chapter and then teaches me his routines to
several well known closeup effects from the thirties and forties;
requalifing in a later chapter by pointing the finger at those
who steal entire acts and/or presentations one hundred percent;
patter, moves and all.
Where is the grey area, if in fact one exists? The very
fabric from which a magician is made has fibres of deception
tightly interwoven with the other threads necessary to weave the
total personality of a magician. Perhaps without this somtimes
calculated sometimes random "borrowing" there would be no
continuity of the art; little growth; or even, real
communications.
Another question arises; is it theft to use someones
material without permission but giving them credit for their
thought or invention (most probably a variation of a variation)
while we do our own "original" version. Does the inventor mind
the theft if proper credit is given. Is intellectual recognition
tantamount to acceptance within the community itself. Is the
fabric of the community woven from the personalities of the
magicians themselves or is it something else?

Re: HELLO & LOCATION EFFECT.

Greetings. I have just discovered your magical bulletin board. I am
also new to California. Does anyone know of any magicians in the Long
Beach Area?
Here is an excellant location effect that I have been using for some
time.
Although the parts are not knew, I have never seen their combination in
the manner set forth below.
(1) Do an incomplete in-faro.
(2) Have the spectator peek at a card in the upper half. Retain a
pinky break in the rear half.
(3) Strip out the upper half and fan showing card is lost inside it.
This also impliedly shows that no breaks are being held.
(4) Place the original upper half onto the original rear half and cut
the cards below the break to the top. This places the selected card
26th from the top. I usually fan the cards again to show that the card
is not near the top or bottom.
(5) Next, have the spectator cut a small (1-20) packet of cards from
the top of the deck (turn your head to avoid the suspicion of
estimating the number).
(6) Do another in-faro. The selected card is now at a position from
the bottom of the deck equal to the number of cards in the packet cut
by the spectator PLUS ONE. I usually get rid of the extra card with a
double cut.
(7) I then ask the spectator for the first time to count the cards he
has in his hand. I then very fairly count from the face of the deck to
reveal his card at that number.
[the incomplete faro peek control to the 26th position is well known
(see Martin Nash's first book) the other part of the effect comes from
a Harry Lorayne idea published in Quantum Leaps.]
I hope your subscribers enjoy this effect.

opening,move/handling is mine. The way I hand jout the 3 pieces of rope
is mine, but then the display grip is roger Sylwesters (was in print)
and I will give BRIEF descript, then tell where in print. The finish is
the Conway rope trick, you got to buy book or find effect. You see Ken
Brooke owned rights to Conway trick so I was giving Ken my lead in and
Sylwester handling (I think Ken had tried to reach him for rights,
maybe did, don't know as Ken died in midst of this) and so on....

No offense taken, although I'll disagree about the commerciality of the
Oil & Water effect. I'll grant that, improperly presented, it winds up

quite successful. The secret is to make the effect explicit. (If you

Actually, the story goes that David Bamberg was showing his father some
props in use in his Fu Manchu show, and Okito pointed out that one was

as the prop was never turned in use, the audience would never see the
unfinished side. "Yes," countered his father, "but _you_ will."

Re: OKITO

Well you know, dear Tabman, we DO share a couple of interests.
One, our love of the crafting of things magical, and second, our love
of music. I spent a number of years as chief recording engineer at a
studio in Hollywood. Worked with some of the finest bluegrass
musicians in the business, not to mention just about everyone else...

As for Okito, I was quite disappointed in not having issued the winning
bid for the book, but after a quick work-up of my (egads, do I dare
curse on this board?) TAXES, I found that my coffers were a bit on the
slim side... I shall continue to try and obtain a copy nonetheless...

I've built many pieces for my kid shows, from drop-down mirror boxes to
tables. Spent many an hour trying to make an Owen vanishing dove cage
silent enough to use close-up... Okito's work, though, still astounds
me. What I'd give (well, within limits--I'm not Dr. Albo) for a few of
his pieces now! I've never had the, er, balls, to try and work with
mahogony or cherry, I guess I'll stick with good ole plywood and
masonite for now. Someday, the muse willing, I will be fortunate
enough to have the equipment to be able to turn out a few good
pieces... Would (or should that be wood?) enjoy hearing of your
triumphs and failures though. Certainly I'd have much to learn from
your experiences. Hell, I'd probably be one of your best customers!

By all means, let me know when you're ready to start selling a few of
your pieces. After recovering from post-tax psychosis, I might be
willing to splurge!

There have been copies advertised from time to time and there have been
a few citations of the Necronomicon in scholarly papers, but no-one has
ever seriously produced a copy. As you know, one is supposed to be at
"Miskatonic University" and Miskatonic is supposed to be a pseudonym
for a real place.

You know, all of this could lead to an interesting idea... I can't
think of the name, but there IS a fake professor who was invented in
the 20's and who has, from time to time, published scholarly research
in a number of disciplines. (Does anyone remember the name?). Anyway,
it would be possible for the members of MAGIC! to invent a fake
magician. As a group we could probably do a pretty good job on this
guy, publishing effects under his name, etc. Only MAGIC! members would
know. Interesting thought, no?

Let's see... we could call him Steve Kucera or something catchy like
that.

Re: CONTRIBUTION

I still haven't caught up with my weekend. Seems that although I rode
back from Vegas in a car, my wits are lost in baggage at LAX. Oh,
well. Will get my act back together as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, I had to share something with y'all.....

I got a letter today from a magician who, for the moment, shall remain
nameless - we can call him K.C. He is NOT a member of MAGIC! at the
moment. Seems that he doesn't have a computer. But another member has
been slipping him messages from MAGIC! As a result, he is buying a
computer! AND he sent MAGIC! a contribution! No small sum either!

Here's a quote from his letter...

"I have already received more value [from MAGIC!] than I would if I had
spent $-- on one of the newest books, so I am enclosing a check for $--
to help you with expanding the system, etc."

His contribution not only helps our operational coffers, I think it is
a great tribute to all of us. So maybe the guy (who shall remain
nameless for the moment) who prints off messages and passes them to
K.C. will print off this one and give it to him with our profound
thanks?

Sounds like something that could be used in magic! I did see an
interesting water item over the weekend and will be reporting more on
it soon. In it the water, in small droplets, ran UP from the base to

UPRIGHT (open end to the top) into the stream of droplets. The glass
would fill with water...

May 15th 1974.

Pete:

Received your Note and it was good to hear from you again.
Glad to hear the delay was due to business!
I have been playing with the Himber Ring idea but haven't
found a practical solution so far to do this close up. I think I
prefer the trailing thread best, because you don't have to reset
for each showing and can use the pencil over and over again.

<>.

I do hope you get a chance to write the routine you worked
out with Bruce, because as you mentioned: so far there has not
been a satisfying routine.
Came up with a so-easy card switch for the "STING" where you
show the hand as 3,3,3,3,6 first and J,J,J,J,6 later.
I use 4 double facers 3s and Jacks! Plus an ordinary 6 of
hearts. The 6 is on the bottom so you can show packet both sides.
You act the same way as Paul Newman does in the picture: looking
over your shoulder etc., and you peel the cards carefully as a
real poker player thereby hiding the Jack indexes on the back
with your right fingers. Put the fan face up on the table or show
face up in hands as being 4 threes and a 6. Close fan and turn
face down. Put packet on table for a moment to reach into pocket
for money or something like in the movie. Talk a moment and pick
up the hand again, doing the over the shoulder look again and
when you put the cards back on the table, you do a half-pass
turning the 4 double facers under the 6 of hearts. No, I am
sorry! It is not a pass at all: it is just turning the 4 doubles
underneath the 6!
So the packet is face down on the table again and after your
story you turn the packet face up(?) and show you switched to
Jacks!
Even if you do the turnover of the 4 cards under the 6 not
so perfect it does not matter because you are going to explain
anyway! They might remember you doing something but will be
surprised when they see the Holdout later!
I also worked out a turnover on the table but will show you
when in Boston. Too difficult to explain on paper.
How about using a tape recorder with the music of "The
Sting" to set the mood for the gambling lecture to follow! Sounds
nice to me!

     <>.

Ken <> still sounded a little depressed in his last
letter <> but I sure
hope they will work everything out fine.
Hope he will be able to make it to Monte Carlo next June.
Would do him good. No business, just relax and have some fun.
Well, Pete, let me hear from you again!
Kindest regards to all the boys! See you in Boston!

Re: PANDORA'S UNCLE

I guess what was bothering me was that this particular
author drove this "stealing" thing into the ground and then
"stole" all of his material. It was hard for me to swallow. The
book was/is excellent and I have several by him on the shelves
but can't understand where he got off on his tirade. So, all
those he "borrowed" from are no longer with us. I would have
rather had him say, "here is the process for taking a classic
effect or an idea or invention and doing your own thing with it"
which he is really excellent with.
I don't think there have been more than a dozen (outside
technological advances) new ideas presented since the turn of the
century. At Doc Eason's lecture - first he did a show and then
tipped everyone - he said, after a particularly strong effect,
"this is in Fine Art of Magic" and everyone just sorta gasped.
Heard someone mutter "jeeez, got that book at home but never saw
that!" Doc added a 1% improvement (really) and rode that horse to
town.

Top producer in Nashville when asked how do you make a
hit record sed "if the #1 this week is about a red car, we do one
about a blue truck!" exact quote....whether you agree with this
philosophy or not (thats why he's rich and I'm not) it prevails
and is a wall any creator has to climb over.

The object, then, must be to be the one they copy; but
how do you get there? Must you copy someone else and by doing so
discover those things that make you unique. Listen to the sincere
thank yous from any good award show and discover the inspiration
of the true artist. In addition to mom and the lawyer and
accountant, it is those who showed the way by style, originality,
and invention that get mentioned with appreciation.
With few exceptions, material over 54 years old belongs
to the public domain it is all ours to use. Every new variation
copyrighted must be filed as an arrangement or adaptation of
public domain material to be legal and each new discoverer has
the right to draw on the original public domain source.
Magic and music seem forever intertwined the only real
difference being ag and us. Conventions I went to years ago
always hada banjo player. Still I wonder, who has Cardini's banjo
today?
Everyone likes "real magic", laughter and suspense. I
forsee a day when a magician will parlay a talent and interest in
sound reproduction and the desire to further suspend reality into
new and more exciting presentational possibilities. Through the
use of these technologies combined with a flair for original and

philosophy, prose, and poetry. The oldest part of the library are
around 300 leather bound books dating before 1800. These
fortunately were moved to Georgia around 20 years ago and wern't
subject to the burgulars choice. One of my favorites is The Mind

Re: ROSEWOOD MAGIC

The tie between music and magic is strong. They are both
art forms that answer questions that haven't been asked.
Bluegrass and jazz both attract lots of maji, I believe because
of the complex tonal structure and underlying themes. Speed metal
is the bluegrass of rock and has its share of devotees.
My dream as a youth was to devote my life to the study of
magic. Music has given me the freedom to do just that and as an
added benefit the ability to "feel" beneath the surface. Music or
dance and music can develop the ability to sense timing and go
with the flow (so to speak). Not to be a spectator, but to be the
performance. Those with the ability to attach the aural to the
visual; and the visual to the aural, will be the most successful.
Even silence has a sound.
I'll keep you posted on the woodshop stuff. It'll be a
while. Love it though, through it I feel a link to the past..I'm
a lousy businessman, usually giving away more stuff than I sell,
but you gotta give to receive and I am blessed everyday so it
must be working. There's something to be said about having
friends anyway.........

There were small droplets of water that appeared to move UP from a bowl
to an inverted bowl at the top. Sort of a levitation of water. BUT,
if you put a glass in the upward moving stream of droplets, in the
normal position (open end of glass at the TOP) then the stream of
droplets would pause and while they appeared to be leaving the empty
glass and moving up to the inverted bowl, the glass would fill with
water. Got it now?

Re: SLYDINI

Just sittin' here after a little time to reflect a bit on
Slydini.
He used to make trips to the Left Coast and when I lived in
the S.F. Bay area he would call me to help set up group and
private lessons. This was great fun, as Tony would - to repay me
for my effort - give me FREE special lessons, one on one.
I really enjoyed this, as there was no one better at the
kind of things Slydini created. His coin work at the table, the
paper balls over the head, knotted silks, the Helicopter Card,
some false cuts, not to mention lapping, misdirection etc. were
priceless lessons.
It was also great to get to New York and visit him in his
apartment. I remember going there one night with Persi Diaconis
and Slydini cooked a terrific Chicken dinner for us. He did some
magic he's never put into print for us.
On another occasion went to the famed "Mama Leone"
restaurant with him and Murray Selwit. When we got there you
would have thought Slydini was a Godfather. The whole place
stopped, all the waiters, managers, etc. knew him. The service
and the food was incredible and WE NEVER SAW A BILL.
Had I lived in the area I probably would have helped him
write a book. He asked me a couple of times to work with him on a
book NOT ABOUT MAGIC, but about his ways of misdirection to use
on someone that pulls a gun on you, tries to mug you, etc. He had
many thoughts and ideas, but didn't know who might help to put
it down in book form.
Not sure of the spelling, but Slydini's real name: Quentino
Marruchi. I'm sure others will have more biographic details, such
as birthplace, awards, places he worked, and other facts... but I
can only say that it was a real thrill to have know him and had
the opportunity to share time with him not as a magician, but as
a person. He was very perceptive and a great study of human
nature.
Slydini truly represented a totally unique and original
personna, with magic done like no one else.
People like Slydini, Al Flosso, Francis Carlyle, that are
now gone should not be forgotten. They were the links to the past
in magic, and those links are sadly diminishing rapidly.

Unfortunately I do not know anything about Michaels book. The concept
ditching into a topit requires several parameters be met: First, does
it catch an/the object -- if not adjust it up - down - forward etc as
needed. Second, is it visable, does it hang down ? can it be seen from
the front ? These parameters are more customization points you must
answer. It sounds like you need to move the topit forward, however, it
also depends on how large your stomach sticks out and how good your aim
is. I usually have my Topit Tux when I work at the castle. Stop me and
I will be happy to show you what little I know. Good luck.

Re: MICAHAEL AMMAR

Talked with Michael this morning. Seems that he broke a small bone in
his left wrist. He may have to be in a small cast for some time, but
otherwise he is ok. It was his left wrist (and he is right handed...)
so will not hinder his "throwing" hand in use of topit, etc. He has
some wild story about how this happened. Mike and Hanna live in
northwest Austin, and are somewhat in the flight path of planes landing
at Austin airport. Mike says he thought to carry on with his research
on the card on airplane window, since no one had come up with a real
good way to work the card on window, he was going to see if his card
on ceiling could be improved to be "Card on underside of airplane wing"
and while working on the concept the jet blast from a low flying plane
blew him off balance and he fell off the roof of his house....... Hanna
absolutely refuses to verify this, matter of fact she can't even keep
a straight face while Mike tells it......Mike said to start rumors and
he will then leak word that the real story will be in his next
publication, and the rumors will help sales..... That guy is always
thinking..... He apparently is doing OK since he said he would be at
the Jamy Swiss lecture at the monthly S.A.M. meeting tommorrow night.

Re: MO' BOOKS

I've found their books and catalogs fascinating. Build a
giant telsa coil, a Wright Flyer; be privy to most of the
experimental science and mechanics from the glory days. I really
believe that the planet is gonna come to a point that if poeple
aren't very wealthy, that they'll have to depend on themselves
and their friends much more in the forseeable future. The recent
Cray simulation of global warming projects massive drought across
the USA in the late 90s. Services will deteriorate to the point
of being virtually nonexistent. Sure, the entertainment biz will
flourish; but it will be more "home" centered via recordings and
downloads from satellites.
What does this have to do with MAGIC!? Everything, cause
I plan to be around via repeater for a long time. Especially as
long distance travel will become increasingly more expensive -
jets fly on kerosene you know - this will become more and more a
meeting ground.
Just discovered something kinda interesting with my copy
machine - Canon PC-11 - it will take a blank faced playing card
(I used blank bike) and print onto the face. This might be
something someone could use. I just dropped a friend a note cuz
he fell off his roof and copied a photo onto a card as a gag and
sent it out to him. Idle minds you know. Ben Harris has a great
copy machine/fax gag in his "Mad Fax" booklet. This is a "new"
field and ripe for exploitation.
Here's a fax idea for you. If you're on CIS arrange to
send a timed fax to your (or someone elses) fax machine at a
prescribed time.....could be simple as a forced card or some
other more original idea..could open the door for a whole new con
though...maybe I should just keep my mouth shut...
Saaaay, whats your fax ## ????
                           Your friend,

Re: QUESTIONS ON SYSTEM

David, just wondering about something. Since the system is multiple-
line, if another caller posts a message while you are on the system,
say after you have read all the messages and you are writing a message
yourself, does the counter on last message read know that you have not
seen the messge that was posted by someone else while you are composing
the message you leave? (In short, could you miss any of the messages
in this situation?). Also, is there a command to skip the sign on
message... after 60+ calls I know the name of the board and the notice
about privacy of messages.... Not complaining, the time you spend in
keeping this system going and all of the effort and $$$ involved are
really appreciated.

I placed a notice re Ken's collection after first signing on. I don't
know if this was the first that you saw, but I am glad you got the
article. I met Ken when he was in Phx several years ago at the
"Summit" twix the IBM and the SAM. He offered to show me his
collection when I was in Ohio. Unfortunately, our schedules crossed
and I am now even more distressed that I missed the tour. Maybe next
time.

Re: KAPS

Just got back on-line a few days ago and was amazed to see that
hundreds of messages had flown by in just a few weeks! It's taken a few
days to wade through the printouts. Appreciate your putting the Kaps
letters into circulation. It's hard to believe it's now been 20 years
since you brought Fred into Morcom's House of Novelties where I was
working behind the counter. You and he were putting together that
great set of lecture notes then. What a treat it was to have Fred DO
the stuff right there in the magic shop -- days before the lecture.
The evening show for that little one-day convention at Bjornson Hall
must have been one of the best convention shows ever. My father --
who was mildly interested in magic as a kid -- STILL talks about Kaps'
performance that night. He's never forgotten it.
I have some pretty warm memories of him. Remember that afternoon in
Hawaii when the few of us went up to Sawa's room? Sawa opened up that
big suitcase and did trick after trick with his sets of gaffed ropes.
Incredible stuff. Kaps was a knocked out as anyone and as
enthusiastic as a kid with a new toy. There was a memorable afternoon
at one of the major conventions in 1974 (Boston or Philly -- I can't
remember which -- I worked several dozen conventions that year) where
Fred showed up at the booth I was working, plopped himself down behind
it and spent the whole afternoon just chatting. Aside from the fun, he
was a real traffic stopper! Another great time was a night you brought
him down to the Magic Cellar and he did the Copper/Silver Transposition
with the Chinese coins ending. Some pretty damned good magicians there
and he DESTROYED them. The real handling never did get in print,
right? You mention it only obliquely, but the OTHER version of the
"Smoke Trick" -- the close-up version with the spoon -- is one of the
most MAGICAL things I've ever seen. I think if it had been released it
would have been one of the most butchered effects ever -- you really
needed Kaps' manipulative ability to do it.
An interesting point on another thing you mentioned in passing: the
"Card Sword" that Kaps had. There were 3 of them made out of antique
swords by a French magic enthusiast (and multi-millionare) Jean
Ducatillion and one was given to Fred. Ducatillion was going to make
one for Gaetan Bloom but never could acquire another ungaffed sword.
A few years ago Gaetan got a package from Ducatillion -- it was a
sword, but it was Kaps' sword. Ducatillion had bought it back from
Nellie Kaps to give to Bloom. Don't know where the other two swords
are but that Kaps Sword is a wonderful piece of mechanics.
(Incidentally, this is the same Ducatillion who made a few of the
multi-setting Stull Watches in wristwatch form for Himber back in the
early 1960s.)
I have a "Kaps Wallet". Not what Ken Brooke marketed, but something
unique that showed up as a surprise gift from Hans Trixer of Zimbabwe
a few years ago. Fred had a wallet made like his brochure with
"London", "Zurich", "Paris" etc. inlaid into the leather. Around 1977
he showed it to Hans' wife Chelly. When she admired it, he autographed
it and gave it to her on the spot. After Chelly died Hans thought I
might like it. As you know, Hans was close with Fred and has a lot of
his material, along with permission to perform it. He was the one
behind getting the permission for me to publish Kaps' routine with the
Okito Box in "Arcane" some years back. Wonder if any of the other
material will ever be released and what is happening with Dick
Koornwinder's progress on the Kaps book proposed some years ago?
Perhaps our friends from Holland will let us know.
