Re: RING 21 AMMAR LECTURE
If you have been reading the messages of late you will know what I am
about to say. Yes, the RING 21 sponsored Ammar Lecture that was to
have been on the 21st of this month has be CANCELLED. RING 21 is
hoping to reschedule this lecture later in the year, if possible, but
of course we don't have any firm dates.
I would like to Thank all of you who did sign up though because it did
show the magic world or at least RING 21 that the MAGIC! Network is up
and coming as there were about five or six members from MAGIC! who
signed up. We are now a force to be reckoned with!!!!

Re: PARALLAX REVISITED
Parallax Revisited
This is based on an original idea from Dave Britland
much of which can be found in his booklet PARALLAX available
from Martin Breese, Ltd. also credit Bob Neale for "Trapdoor
Card" and Terri Rogers for "Stargate" which Britland credits
in Parallax.
As far as I know, Jeff Busby started this "inside
out" trend in card magic with "Into The Fourth Dimension".
I do not know the entire lineage of this premise, but would
like to find out.
For the scoring, fold, and basic routine I refer you
to the above mentioned booklet.
DB> Magician gets a jumbo card from someplace. This
card has a trapdoor cut in its center. The spectator holds
the card face down not letting go and the magician proceeds
to fold the card up around spectators fingers and when
unfolds card is now face up. Pretty cool, huh. I thought so
too.
tc> But, I'm not too keen on jumbo cards and don't
keep any around except to fan the gnats away in the summer
and unless you're doing a routine with lotsa jumbos init,
just doesn't make sense to drag one outa nowhere just to
show this, but I really loved his effect and started
thinking about it.
Take your favorite card from a regular poker sized
dek and score and cut it as per Britland. Pre-crease it
carefully, but not enough to take the shine off, but just
enough to make it easy later. You can make up a half dozen
of these cards inabout 5 min after doing the first one. Use
a linoleum knife and a steel straightedge and be
careful...anyway.... put the trapdoor card someplace out of
the way in the deck and after doing a coupla trix force the
trapdoor card for a laugh and take it from the spectator and
crease/fold the card once again while explaining about the
experiments the British have been running on "parallel
universe theory" using ordinary playing cards. I might
explain about the work that General Busby and Prime Minister
Walton did, but they were only able to enter the "paradept
range about half the time, etc". Thats just me, you can
tellit anywayouwant.
If youve gotta laundry marker on you get it signed
just to prove you didn't resort to using some kind of trick
card (which everybody knows I do). Your pigeon (I use this
term fondly) will like seeing the card unfold face up
bearing their signature and it makes a great souvenir.
Proceed into, through, and out of the routine. This
effect isn't a closer, but could be positioned as an encore
with souvenir or near the beginning of a longer routine so
you wouldn't have to keep dealing with the trapdoor card.
*I'm wondering if Harbin didn't come up with
something along these lines. I'm speaking reference to his
interest in paper folding; however do not have books....must
add to the list I guess.......tabman

Re: MO' BOOKS
I'd love to work on a Tesla Coil. But don't hook it to your modem! In
your research, have you come across something called, I think, nitrogen
tri-iodide? Made some once. It is an unstable chemical that
crystalizes from the inside out. Then, when slightly jarred, the
crystals explode in a harmless, but noisy, manner. I made a dolop of
the stuff in high school and the first, inside, crystal exploded and
blew the stuff all over the room. For several days thereafter when
someone moved they would set them off.
Your woodworking sounds great. I've always thought I would like to do
some, but the fact that I don't probably means that I really don't want
to. Along with Ron Bieber I've been thinking of a close-up case. Not
a table, although it could include some folding legs, but a case that
could be carried and easily used.
Didn't know that the PC-11 would print on a card. Tried printing some
with a laser printer but it didn't bind to the surface. Was gonna try
using fine steel wool to burnish the plastic prior to printing. There
are a LOT of things you can do if you can print custom cards.
The fax idea is a good one. I use a fax card and it has a timed mode.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: QUESTIONS ON SYSTEM
>From what programming told me you should NOT miss messages in the
situation where you are on and preparing a message while others are
posting theirs. The system is supposed to keep track of the last
number you READ, not the number of a message you send. What does
happen is that when you see the message can change. For example, you
are reading and someone is posting. If their message is posted before
you finish reading then you will see it immediately. On the other
hand, if you have finished reading but are still on the system when the
post occurs then you will probably not see it until the next time you
log on.
The IS a way that you can miss messages, but it has nothing to do with
multi-user. It can happen like this -- You read a thread that, let's
say, starts at message # 3500 and has a message at # 3600. You read
that last, highest, message but then you LOG OFF. Effectively you have
stored # 3600 as your highest read even though you have not read
another thread that begins at # 3501. That's why I recommend using R;*
(or RC;*) and reading ALL new messages when you log on.
There are two ways to shorten your sign on time. You can go to the
User Parms (U from the Main Menu) and change your profile so that the
"Checking for Messages" system is disabled for you. Works fine if you
read all new messages anyway and don't care if some were addressed to
you or not.
You also CAN stop the "Welcome" screen. When it begins you hold down
the CTRL key as you type K.

Re: KIDS SHOW
Stan,
Currently my kid show (for 7-9 year olds) consists of the following:
(And if you notice any similarity to Ginn's, your right. It works!)
Opening warm up leading into
Vanishing Liter bottle of Coke
Then, to music:
Cane to silk
Splitting silks
Dove from silks
Zebra silks
Color changing records
Dove from balloon (tray)
Card fans
Diminishing cards
Fan-to-see
Rabbit production (mirror) box (handled like Ginn's Radio Rabbit)
Hippity Hop Rabbits or Run Rabbit Run (either)
Magic Spelling Cards (From Stanley Collins' "A Conjuring Melange")
Strato Spheres
Ginn's Snake Can routine
Dove thru Glass
Cords of Phantasia (dressing birthday child in Teenage Mutant Turtle
costume and having THEM escape from ropes instead
of the usual silks. Turtle sword is substituted
for the wand.)
(Filler -- 6 card repeat)
(Filler -- Die Box -- NOT USED if Run Rabbit Run used above)
Dove Vanish using Nite-club dove vanish (to music)
Magical Baking (Candy ala dove pan--note: All the comedy wands are
used in this routine. Again see Ginn for these...)
I use the candy production as a good closer. The candy is produced,
and then I lead all the kids to the table for cake, magical candy, and
whatnot. Leaves me free to return to pack while kids have lunch or
cake...
Hope this helps. I'll talk more with you at the Castle luncheon if

that tfrom the description, all the obvious methods for this type of

The water tube was designed to shoot the water out in tiny and
disntinct droplets, and the speed of these drops could be regulated.
The illumination was a light in the top of the thing that appeared to
be continuous, but was actually cycling at about 30 blinks a second in
strobe fashion. By playing around with the strobe frequency or the
water flow you could make the falling drops appear to slow, stop and
reverse, apparently going back up into the faucet. It is the same
phenomenon that appears to make a spoked wheel run backwards when seen

have found that the old coloring book effect goes over incredibly well.
I particularly like the three change books: Plain, line drawings, and
then colored drawings. This is really a good audience participation
effect. I also recommend any of David Ginn's (spelling?) books. In
particular, there is a short bit included in his book "Kid show Magic"
(I think that's the title) that has a great little warm up for kid
that you use as assitants during your act. Also, doing a few balloon
animals is a great addition. You don't have to have a large

I'm mailing you an old brainwave deck I have in the
drawer. Will send out tomorrow. If you do decide to make some of
these up make me one red/blue and rest blue/blue. I'm trying to
find the old printed instructions that came with the deck and you
can see how they're supposed to be set up. The chem is put on
faces and arranged as per the example.
This is a great trick but don't know how popular it is
today. I see E. Burger has it in his "Experience..." book so at
least there's some current awareness.
Don't worry about sending it back. Later.....tc

Re: MODEM COMMANDO
Modem Commando
You'd be surprised at how little I actually spend on my
longdistance considering that most daze I log onto MAGIC! more
than once from over 3,000 miles away. It didn't happen overnight,
but after alarming telephone charges I began looking for an
alternative.
Dr. Lichtman suggested PC-Pursuit which is the Class A
way to go if you live in a city that has a Telenet node. Me, no
node. ((Maybe Dr. Light will put that info up again or in FILE)).
The average length of my calls now is less than three
minutes and often less than 1 minute. This doesn't allow for
daydreaming or even reading the messages as they go by. This is a
quick in and out. I read messages off line and respond to them
off line. I can pop on during the day and upload messages at my
convenience still using the quick in and out.
Briefly -->
- Have macros or quick keys set up with username and
password.
- use keyboard memory to make your sign on rapidly:
as soon as you see the "connect" from your modem
software hit twice then "c" then username
hotkey and followed by password hotkey immediately
followed by a .
((Your fingers will be
outrunning the screen at this point but all will catch
up.))
- turn on your capture mode while you wait for the screen
to catch up with you.
- if you set your user parameters to ignore the message
check you'll be in immediately. To get all the messages
left since your last signon use " RC;* " to rapidly
pull down all messages (your personal mail included).
- immediately upon seeing the end of messages flag and
the main menu entry line enter " G " and you're outa
here.
Does this make sense??
Wonder if a TAPCIS type system could be utilized, but
since I'm using good old PROCOMM I let my fingers do the walking.
Procomm has lots of capability once you learn your way around. It
is almost a complete operating environment. I'm in Procomm right
now using a shelled word processor for speed. Anyway......

Hi Evan -->
Appreciate the reference and since the book is on the
shelf I was able to check it out. Maybe I can't read between the
lines well, but even though Kaufman called Busby's handling
"uninspired" I can't seem to find any evidence of a feud. Roy
Walton did take the Busby idea and enlarge it into a trick which
stands on its own so no disagreement there.
Sankey has a neat idea with the one card and rubber band
but I don't really think anybody has ever topped the original
routine that Roy Walton built on Jeff Busby's idea -Card Warp -
except maybe a guy I've only heard rumors of who works at a
bar/restaurant in Indiana somewhere.

Hi Max -->
You're right about it not being exactly a 26/26 type
"brainwave" deck, but since they used the term in the text and in
the adv. from K&G I used it too. Do you have the Fulves book,
"History of the Brainwave Principal"???
Further reading on the "stack of quarters" finds mention
of the "cap and pence" which predates. Did Leipzig bring the
effect into modern times with the quarters or was he simply
another in a long evolutionary chain?
Still enjoying "Focus" on this end. Great book...

The Sankey book's pretty great, I think, though (as I've noted
before) it seems to strangely fall just a little shy of Kaufmann's
usual production quality -- cause for jitters more than genuine
concern... Re the Kaufmann/Busby feud, my question is really the gossip
in me coming out. A year or so ago I caught the tail end of it,
reading in Busby's newsletter something to the effect of (from Busby)
that he wasn't putting up with Kaufmann's taunts any more, and would no
longer stock Kaufmann's books. I think this has something to do with
the column Kaufmann had in a major magic magazine (GENI?). As a matter
of fact, I'm pretty sure that's what i had to do with. Anyway, I
invite anyone to fill us in on this feud, since it sounds like juicy
stuff!

Thanks for the good advice, Tabman! I have only one question -- you
use hotkeys to type "c" and then your name and password? What is the

general information for others -- your name can be typed on ONE LINE.
When MAGIC! asks for your name, you can enter the whole name, first and
last, with a space in between. No need to enter just your first name
and then wait until the system asks for your last name.

Well, Stan, yes it IS a big show. Even bigger with two U.F. Grant type
Nite Club tables, a main table, a dove cage table, and a dump basket.
David Ginn would have a heart-attack if he saw what I pack just to do
a child's birthday party. And I'll be the first to admit I'm crazy.
But there's a method to my madness. First, I'm not making my living
with magic. I'm too much of a conservative to be constantly "on the
road", and therefore, doing magic full-time just isn't in the cards so
to speak. But I do LOVE magic. And I love seeing the smiling,
laughing faces in my small audiences as I put on the biggest magic show
most of them have ever seen. Right, smack-dab, in their living rooms.
And I know that they'll long remember the crazy fellow that came and
entertained them when they were a kid. And perhaps, by my actions, one
or two of them will be smitten by the magic bug. Who knows, maybe
sometime in the year 2010 or so, there will arise another Slydini,
another Copperfield, or another Dante? And they will tell the story of
the magician who came one day, and caused a dove to appear, right,
smack-dab, in the middle of their living room...
Such is the stuff of dreams. My dreams.

Re: MODEM COMMANDO
Well... if it works, don't fix it, Tabman. But MAGIC! shouldn't need
the 's and the "C". You might just try a key with your name and
another with your password and see what happens. Actually, you should
be able to do both in a Procomm (or QModem) "Script." For example,
have the script check for a "?" at the end of "What is your Name?" and
then have it check for a ")" in "Password (dots will echo)". I DO have
hopes of creating some logon scripts for different communications
packages, but I'm up to my kazoo (hey, at least I worked music in here
somehow) and won't have a chance for a few weeks. BUT, if anyone is a
Procomm or QModem "guru" and would like to take a shot at it, I'd like
to see it.
By the way, it won't change your online time, but I think that you use
a protocol of 7-bits, even parity, 1-stop bit. It's OK, but for file
transfers and such a protocol of 8-bits, No-parity, 1-stop bit works
better. If you don't know what the H- I'm talking about, just keep
doing what you are doing. But if you do know, you might want to change
to the 8-bit one.

I think you will find the coloring book to be a great addition to your
act. If you would like I could recommend a few presentation pointers.
With regard to your out of this world effect, for visibility are you
using oversized cards? I think alot of nine year olds play cards
enough to enjoy a fairly quick paced presentation of the effect. Come
to think of it, most nine year olds could probably beat me at poker.
I also can't recommend enough the David Ginn thing about warming up

Re: COINS
Just a brief comment on the Cap and Pence, Quarter Stack etc. Max is
right in commenting that the basic gaff predates Nate Leipzig "by
several centuries". Brought back some funny memories of a magician who
wanted to market an "original routine" over a decade ago. I hated to
tell him that his particular Cap and Pence routine was at least as old
as Henry Dean's _Whole Art of Legerdemain, or Hocus Pocus in
Perfection_ which was first published in 1722. When I did tell him he
was not pleased and never spoke to me again.
Though Dean stole a lot from Reginald Scot's _Discovery of Witchcraft_
(1584) and Sa. Rid's _Art of Jugling_ (1612) the stack does not appear
in those books. I have not checked _Hocus Pocus Junior_ (1634) because
I don't have it, so it may very well be earlier than Dean.
One of the more interesting presentations appeared in 1865 in Gerritt
M. Evans' _How to Win_ -- a lovely little book on gambling scams.
Therein the effect begins as a magic trick, but rapidly turns into a
con game.
Tabman, I haven't neglected the mass of messages and asides you've
directed at me for the past several weeks. Being on vacation has
produced a foot-high stack of correspondence, faxes etc. that I'm
wading through. I'll make an attempt to respond as time permits. In

Another good addition to the coloring book (something I've been using
at Day-care center shows): Go to your local Builder's Emporium or the
like, and buy a dry-erase marker whiteboard. They sell them in cheap
wooden frames for less than $5. Cut out an artist's palette shape from
it using a jig-saw. Using several colors of dry-erase marker, put
blobs of color (including black) on it simulating oil paints. Using a
large camel's hair brush, you can actually erase the colors from the
board, and then "magically" pass them to the blank coloring book.

If we do something you don't agree with, we want to be told, so we
can rectify it to everyone's satisfaction.
It was , Burt a little premature to fly off the handle with me.
Because first, the 25% charge was not meant for you and was charged in

Sorry for any grief and inconvenience I might have caused you. It
definately was not intentional.
Sincerely,

A bit of advice to all of you out there. If you have a credit card and
the dealer for any product, especially mail order products will accept
your credit card- USE IT. Federal law says you have up to six months
from the time you RECEIVE the goods or services to dispute the charge.
This means you have up to six months to stop payment. Don't abuse this
privilege or the law may be changed. But when you need some extra
leverage it gives you the upper handd.

Scarne's Magic Tricks was the only book in my small town
library on magic (I still have it...kidding) and I have the
illustrative style still etched in my brain as well as the photo
of Scarne from the front of the book.
One of the first dealer tricks I ever bought was a blue
plastic Okito Box from Abbotts from an ad in Genii. I remember my
grandmother taking me to Garrison's Magic and Novelty in
Washington D.C. and Al's Magic Shop (I think) long before they
moved. I have a copy of McKay ed (blue) More Magic I bought for
50 cents used at Garrison's when I was about 13. I was calling
myself "Tordini Jr." at that time and wrote it in model airplane
paint on the fly leaf - oh well...
Some interesting stats...according to the US Online
Yellow Pages there are 371 magic shops in the US Yellow pages &
883 magicians with yellow page ads in the US....sometime if I
ever get to roll in the dough again will download this infor and
send it up to add to the information base we are building here.
Howie called and sed John Calvert was living on his yacht

casinos. Calvert keeps all his props stored on the boat (around
65 footer) and troupes thisaway. Must drive his agent crazy but
at his age and stature, I'm sure doesn't give two winks!
Had some cool Chinese Sticks I got from H.R. Hulse. They
were old when I gotem in 1950s. They were called Chinese Pencils
and looked like fat red metal pencils. Worked like regular
Chinese Sticks. Afraid I haven't seenem in years. Maybe they're

My mom knew I'd never grow up and made sure I was taken
care of. She even guards over my magic stuff at her house (I left

called me first. I told her to throw everything away but my magic
stuff....she asks me about it every six months and I've been

it keeps part of her "little boy" around. She'll join us at the

Re: STOP BITS
Someday it will be interesting to see the US Online Yellow Pages
listings of magic shops and magicians. I'm sure that sooner or later
one of us will do it.
When I was about 8 there was a magic shop in my town. I used to haunt
the place, spending every spare nickel there. It was the kinda shop
there used to be in the world - a real shop run by a real person, not
a franchise. Whenever there weren't real customers to be served the
proprietor would take a lot of time with me. I remember buying an
"Atomic Lightbulb" there and I'm sure I bought several gaffed decks
like the DeLand's Automatic. I still have some of the decks, don't
know where the bulb went. There was some talk around here about
inspiring young magicians and the man who ran that shop certainly left
a legacy -- his time and care eventually was embodied in MAGIC! Sure
hope dealers still do stuff like that.
I think I was about 11 or 12 before I encountered Scarne in the
library. My little town had a surprisingly good library (Leslie
Charteris, "The Saint," used to even do some research there) and they
had several of the Scarne books. He became one of my major childhood
heros. I poured through his books and always had a deck of cards with
me. Practiced flourishes, etc. (I was just thinking back -- I
remember doing a magic show when I was about 8. Had my own clubroom in
the basement of the house. A friend and I gathered all the kids in the
neighborhood together and charged 'em to attend - can't remember how
much. Did some chemical and electrical magic, color changes, etc.
Gee, does that qualify as my first professional appearance?).
Your laptop idea is a good one. We'd have to figure out how to make
the computer side really easy to use - transparent - since most of them
aren't into computers. But it sure would be great.
Here's another thought -- maybe a project. Start getting magic books
into small local libraries. Sorta seed planting for future magi.

One of the things I like about you is your knack of
taking some far fetched idea like putting laptops in the hands of
ageing maji and distilling it into something workable like
putting a couple of beginners books on the shelves of small town
libraries. Might be a good project. The Old Principal's House
Library could use a complete set of "locked" books, Harbin Book,
letz see.......
Just kidding of course, but not about the idea. I like
it. Put it on the list. Something really viable. Lots of ideas
flowing right now, but will reserve til we talk later...
BTW...when we were kidz, my friend Geo. Hooks (now state
senator) built a town under his folks house and called it
"Little" and he was the mayor and saloon keeper. Me (what else) a
banjo playing magician deputy sheriff and member of the posse. We
were about 12 or 13 at the time........
Just heard the prez (the other one) is calling up a large

Re: BOOK LIST
Hi Randy and Marilyn. It was great to see that you two got started
with the _Klutz Book of Magic_. I was "technical advisor" on about half
the contents and my friend Martin Gardner was the other main
contributor. (See the back cover.) Some magicians shrieked in the
usual way about "exposure" but to my mind that's nonsense. As you know
the gaffs are carefully hidden (my requirement before I'd even consider
working on the book with John Cassidy) and the outfit comes in a
plastic sack. Also the book was designed to get the reader more and
more involved in magic as they studied the material, with one learned
skill leading to the next trick. In addition, the budding magician was
taught about secrecy and encouraged to continue his/her studies. We
also felt that the price tag of $12.95 was such that it would
discourage mere curiosity seekers.
At any rate, it's wonderful to see that you two were inspired enough to
continue -- my main intent for working on the project. So far, the
book has been a roaring success. Since publication in late 1989 over
300,000 copies have been sold. It's the fourth most popular book that
Klutz Press has produced. With Martin Gardner I just recently finished
work on another forthcoming book for Klutz on "fun with science".
Should be out in the next few months.
I agree with your comment about about magical fiction. If you can find
it (it's long been out of print) you'll enjoy the Paul Gallico fantasy
novel _The Man Who Was Magic_. It's about a world where magicians live
together in one community. In stumbles a naive young man who REALLY
does magic and doesn't realize that the other members of the community
are using trick methods. Conversely the tricksters can't figure out
the young man's "methods"! Get the book if you can. Also I would
recommend Jack Vance's story which is called, if I recall correctly
_Three Gold Rings_. There's a hilarious scene where the "hero" tries
to entertain an alien audience with simplistic magic. A telling tale
about how dorky magicians can underestimate their spectators. Very
hard to locate, but worth finding is Bruce Ellott's novella "So Sweet
as Magic . . ." which originally appeared in _Fantasy Fiction_ for
August 1953. This is the same Bruce Elliott who edited _The Phoenix_,
of course. In this case the hero -- a professional magician --
stumbles into a world where magic is real. There's a visit to
Tannen's, and Charlier, Dai Vernon, and even the author appear as
characters. A great romp. It was reprinted in the early 1970s in a
collection, but the whole edition had a blank page in the midst of the
story. I can't recall that it's appeared anywhere else. Perhaps you
could get it from a used magazine dealer.

I know that there are organizations that place other types of books in
libraries, usually in college libraries. But maybe we can put this
idea on some list. We select a beginner's list from your topbooks
list. Maybe find some way to get publishers to do a deal. Get 'em out
to the libraries. Maybe even put bookplates with MAGIC!'s phone number
in 'em...
I was lucky as a kid. We had a large house with a basement that was
almost all mine. Had a toyroom, a room for model train, one for
experiments, and a "clubhouse" for meetings and stuff. Never did think
of turning it into a town, but we did do the magic show. Also once
started a bank (with a partner who I think was about 10 years old). We
did pretty well on deposits (had about $1.25 that we extracted from
other kids), but never could figure out how we were supposed to make
money on it. So we didn't pay interest and the other kids got
disgusted and did a "run" on the bank. Geez, if only we'd been doing
it now -- we coulda kept the money and appealed to the FDIC or FSLIC or
one of them things.
Believe me, Tabman, our thoughts are with you and Gloria.

Re: DEALER WARNING
That's very true. I have talked to others who agree with me that just
about any time we have trouble receiving a refund through the mail in
similar circumstances we have paid by check and not credit card.
Usually a business will wait until your check clears before mailing out
the merchandise and it's like pulling teeth if you have any trouble.
Credit card companies can simply "charge back" items that are disputed.
The merchant is debited the amount and the customer, assuming he
prevails in the dispute, is credited the amount on their next bill.

I like the bookplate idea. Been wanting to have a magical
bookplate designed for TOPH Library. I've got a book from Sid
Lorraine's wonderful collection and his bookplate is great. I'll
send you a copy tomorrow. Maybe instead of the phone ## of MAGIC!
we could put the mail address to make it a two step process to
gain information.
Don't know if hardcover "Amateur Magicians Handbook" are
available anymore, but itz one of my faves. The Bruce Elliott
classics perhaps my most fave with "Magic As A Hobby" right up
there. An all round book (does one exist) with a little of
everything would be good for one horse librarys. Would be
interesting to note the areas (states, countries) where magic as
a hobby (profession) is strongest.
Know that Holland has made more than itz share of magi
per square mile. Used to think that cold winters and snow bred
magicians since its primarily an indoor activity but So.
California may disprove that, but look at areas like NYC,
Tokyo, Buffalo, Toronto, Seattle, West (By God) Virginia,
Baltimore, Chicago. May just be that So. Cal. is "melting pot".
Even MAGIC! is located on the left coast with callers from cold
climes.
There is at least one noted magic illustrator here online
and are perhaps others on here but laying low. Maybe you can scan
the copy of bookplate I'm sending over and pop it up. There may
be others who're interested in this sorta thing. I'll try to
remember to make a sharp copy to send out with the one I just
made. I could go for a custom bookplate myself.
Seems like in my reading I ran across a reference to a
small booklet that someone put out years ago with examples of
magicians bookplates init, but for the life of me I can't
remember where I read it. Sphinx maybe, or an elderly GENII.
Always like looking back at Leo. Rullman's book ads in the old
mags. Autographed "Miracle Mongers...." for $4.50....I'll take
one....tabman

Maybe if some folks get a chance, they can check the card catalog at
their local library and let us know what they find (for this purpose,
the Castle library is NOT to be considered a "local library"). Data
might give us some idea of what libraries normally have regarding magic
these days.
Toynbee (I think) argued that civilization began in cold climates. I

was finally persuaded to spend a winter in Florida as a visiting

Re: NEW MESSAGE FILES
DOUBLE FEATURE!
The tenth and eleventh sets of MAGIC! messages - #4500 (Dec. 31,
1990) to #4999 (Jan. 8, 1991) and #5000 (Jan. 8, 1991) to #5499
(Jan. 16, 1991) have been transfered to downloadable files. The
files are named MAGIC-10.TXT and MAGIC-11.TXT. This means that you
can now go to the file area, download these files, and read the
tenth and eleventh volumes of messages off-line. For those who know
how to use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there are
compressed versions of these same files. They are called
MAGIC-10.ZIP and MAGIC-11.ZIP and are about 1/2 the size of the
full-text version.
These sets of messages includes several interesting effects, and the
first three KAPS letters (2 in #10, 1 in #11). There is, of course,
also a lot of magic news and chit-chat. Not only will transfering
these messages to files make it easier for you to obtain a complete
set of them, but it will make the search for new messages easier and
faster.

Re: FACEUP
Here is neat little four Ace deal that you close-up card workers may
enjoy. I like it, and always gets a good reaction....
Geno Munari's Middle Deal for Magicians
A Gambling Demonstration - All Rights Reserved
This is a beautiful pseudo middle deal that uses a clever second
deal to create the illusion of an impecable middle deal
demonstartion. A real eye popper which will soon garner a good
reputation for your knowledge of gambling sleights.
Effect: The four aces are placed face up in the deck and seemingly
lost in the middle of the pack. The dealer deals out seven hands
of poker, including himself, and the four aces are visibly dealt
from the pack to the desired hand.
Secret: Riffle 14 cards from the left thumb and place the first
ace face up, under the 14 cards. Rifle another six cards and place
the next ace. Continue this process for the remaining aces. Show
the aces in the middle of the deck (fig. 2). Deal out seven cards
as in figure 3, and stop and say, "Oh, I forgot to ask you which
hand you would like the aces?" This action helps remove the first
seven cards from the top of the deck. The aces are now in dealing
position to be placed in any desired hand. There is exactly
another seven cards on top of the aces.
If the spectator request the aces to be in the third hand from the
left, you must remove four cards. This put the aces in position to
be placed in the third hand. I use the pretext that, "Here, look
at the backs of the cards and see that they are not marked." I
then deal off four cards. The spectator will look at them and
then I replace them on the bottom of the pack. Now simply deal
the card to the first and secon hands. Stop on the third hand
showing very slowly that the ace is not on the top or bottom, and
very slowly second deal the face up ace from the deck and continue
in sequence until all four aces are dealt out of the pack.
Hope you all enjoy it.

Re: CSB ROUTINES
Here 's a tough one, sure to generate some disagreement and discussion.
I pose this question -- What is the best Copper, Silver, Brass routine
out there? By "best," I mean the most obvious criteria -- impact of
effect. I nominate John Bannon's routine, recently published in his
Lecture Notes. It avoids some of the repetition of the standard CSB
routines, substitutes some simple sleights for previously more awkward
moves... in all, excellent... I though CSB routines would be an
interesting area to pose this question for, as the literature is at
least *somewhat* limited. Also, because of the nature of the
apparatus, there are less likely to be great routines out there that
require such a high degree of skill that most of us are more likely to
read the routines that perform them. Well, any nominations?

Annemann's inability to deal with his own failures leaves

brilliant and beleaguered man. Genii mentioned that one Max
Abrams (I know him only from his book reviews, etc) was compiling
the definative work on Ted Annemann and that it would be released

Seems I remember reading (maybe in the bird) that
Annemann sent a postcard to someone that was postmarked after his

Can you find out what events magical have been slated for
late 1991 or early 1992 there in music city? Here are my thoughts
thus far on the conclave:
Event runs from friday night to sunday afternoon.
Friday: 10pm opening night lecture and hanging
out late.
Saturday: two lectures and two attendee shows
midnight - spirit/mental lecture/programme
Sunday: lecture
brunch
Keep hospitality suite open early and late.
Keep the emphasis on "intimate" and parlour magic.
Have at least one "heady" lecturer in addition to
lecturers who stress the teaching of effects, etc.
Lecturers booked will be Class A.
Convince the hotel to book a great bar magician for the
weekend who can work the hotel bar and provide a
magical atmosphere for the venue.
Perhaps limit general dealer participation to a minimum
to give the lecturers maximum opportunity.
Gimme some feedback and your thoughts. We're gonna do it....

Sounds terrific Geno, but what is the technique used to riffle down
exactly 14 cards? Do you mentally count them as you riffle them singly
with your thumb? I recently saw a lecture by Richard Turner where by
the sense of touch alone he could cut off any desired number of cards
but I don't have an extra 10 years to devote to acquiring that skill!
I notice that when I riffle the cards they do not always fall singly
and if I don't look at them I can't accurately count them. Nice effect
though. Is it one you came up with?

Re: ANNEMANN'S POSTCARD
Reportedly, he sent out more than one postcard telling the recipient to
check the newspapers. These arrived a day or so after he'd committed
suicide, the indication being that he'd planned ahead.
Max Abrams has compiled a wealth of information about Annemann, and
has an interesting biographical slide lecture. I've no idea when his
book will appear; it's been in the planning stages for years. Until it
is published, probably the most thorough information in a single place
on this subject is the Leslie May "To A Memory" bio, which appeared
serially in the _New Jinx_ a couple of decades back (and can be
found in the single-volume reprint of that magazine from Kaufman &
Greenberg).
There have been sporadic articles in various places which contain
information not found in the May series, notably Jay Marshall's
recollections in the _New Phoenix_ and W. L. Gresham's magazine piece
contained in his "Monster Midway" book.
Then, of course, there is much information that has never appeared
in print...

Y'know, the smog doesn't seem so bad at all when you think about how
nice it is to be able to spend an impromptu evening at the Magic Castle
whenever you feel like it.
This evening, I spent a great deal of time with a few decks of cards
and Larry Jennings. As the evening progressed, we moved from bar to
bar...and the tricks and moves got more and more sensational. There
are a number of world-class cardmen who pass through the portals of the
Magic Castle, but for my money, Jennings is one of the truly all-time
greats. Larry had Kurtz and I ready and willing to build an altar!
Anyway, I digress...
Get to the Castle and treat yourself to twenty minutes of really
entertaining magic with Gary Kurtz in the Parlour...(early). He
performs a signed card "time travel" routine that is one of my very
favorites. I could go on and on...but I will spare you all my rambling

Yes, that is the most m-*ortant part of performing, when I was doing
radio and magic as extra cash, I had the time of my life, but had to
get out for the lack of money I was bringing in. Now that I look
back, I was going about the magic in the wrong way. It's so hard
to 'have the time of your life' in a 9 to 5 job. You know, what it
boils
down to is that David is doing what he wants and making big money at
it. If you can do what you enjoy for a living then the pleasure is

Re: ANNEMANN'S POSTCARD
- Someone suggested that at least one of the postcards was
postmarked after his death possibly because he dropped them into
a postal box with a late collection that day. Unfortunate because
I believe Max Holden had offered Ted a desk and a publishing deal
for a "new" Annemann book.
- Annemann's nervous pacing and apparant fear before
performing "his" bullet catch were quite real because unlike
Chung Ling Soo the danger was actually within inches. After
discovering Annemann's method (which I understand he got from
Orville Meyer) I have become perplexed even more and wonder why a
man who could face death on such a realistic level could not face
a "come back".
"Time, like trouble in the hearts of men, marches on."
- While I don't completely understand why he chose to take
his own life, I do understand his frustration and fear. While I'm
not sure if I would have wanted to live during his particular
era, I would have liked to have known Ted Annemann.
- I was looking forward to enjoying your show thursday
night before the MAGIC! luncheon on friday, but world events
force me to put some of my pleasure on the back burner for the
time being, however hope all is proceeding well for you...tman

Do what you love and money will follow, but it doesn't
say how far behind it trails. I liked the way Steve Stills said
it better tho, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the
one you're with."
Do you have access to The Encyclopedia of Suspensions and
Levitations by Armstrong? The material is somewhat dated, however
several of the methods of suspension are in common use today. The
major development in the past quarter has been the Walter Blaney
Hoop which is only available from Walter, however it isn't
necessary unless you can afford one.
Paul Osborne has a couple of good ideas in his Illusion
Builders series. You should order Paul's catalog (address in
Genii). His plans are quite good. I think his catalog is six
bucks or so, but you need it for the illustrations and
descriptives.
Self levitaion hsa been documented by Christian Fechner
but at over 6 hundred bucks for his book and plans its a tad out
of my price range. I'll have to wait til I'm rich and pay a
coupla thou to some tapped out magic buff for his copy. Can you
believe copies of Greater magic were 10 bucks when I was in high
school and didn't have two bucks let alone ten.
Tarbell has some ideas in one of his books too. They're
upstairs so you'd have to check the index for that info as I'm
not moving off this saw horse til I send this up and get back to
the warm part of the house.
Do you have a workshop? I grew up in a boat shop. My toys
were bandsaws and scraps from mahogany decking for speed boats.
The shop here is small and in the boiler room - about 20x20. The
shop in Tennessee will be larger hopefully taking up most of one
barn but I built some of my favorite stuff using a skil saw and a
cheap drill, etc in the backyard.
Bill Smith's Magic Ventures out on the left coast was
great when I visited there last febuary. Bill uses some
innovative cabnitry techniques in his prop building. His massive
table saw takes up most of the central area of the shop itself.
Fortunately he had a high ceiling cause he had stuff stacked to
the rafters. He was building a hangman for Reveen when I was
there then he and wife were going to Japan (or was it Australia I
forget) to assist in the show. What a life. Gigi used to work for
Blackstone Jr. as I believe did Bill also.....later...tabman.

Re: ANNEMANN'S POSTCARD
My favorite apocryphal story about Annemann's suicide is one that
students of the life of the remarkable Theodore John Squires seem to
have missed. It appeared in the _Linking Ring_ five years ago in an
article on the history of _The Sphinx_. The author of the article
strongly implies that William J. "Big Bill" Hilliar's (first editor of
_The Sphinx_) suicide inspired Annemann's own. Of course, the author
of the article neglects to mention that Hilliar died of a
self-inflicted gunshot wound; Annemann by gassing himself. He also
somehow forgets to mention that Annemann suicided in 1942, some SIX
YEARS after Hilliar killed himself. If "[Hilliar's] tragedy had an
effect on Ted Annemann" -- as our writer asserts -- it must have been
a mighty slim one for Annemann to have waited for so long!
The author of the article? None other than that "legendary" magical
"historian" who calls himself "Dr." John Booth. Great Sunday
supplement stuff, but neither scholarly nor historically sound. Has
anybody in the Los Angeles area taken the time to check out the
assertion in his latest book (touted in his advertising) that Harry
Kellar's ashes were stolen or switched? Rosedale Cemetery makes no
bones (pun) about exactly where Booth's story is full of holes (pun).
Or how about his Cardini story? Anybody checked that out? I have, and
much more. Results in print soon, guys.
What happened to the fellow who logged on who said he was both a
magician and Booth's postman? If he's still on-line, perhaps he can
have "Dr." Booth reply?

Re: LEVELAT{A{ATION
Well, it is against my principals, but you could build the Harbin Chari
Suspension. There are TWO RIPOFFS being advetised in Genii etc.,
currently. Error above: CHARI SHOULD BE CHAIR.
If you ever saw Harbin present this you would realise what a great
effect it is. But it has to be built right and PRESENTED right. The
REAL presentation is in the Harbin book. If you have the book, then you
can, without fear of a curse, build and do the effect.
If you got lots of bucks get the good version from Walter Zaney Blaney
using the ladders.
Again... IT IS ALL IN THE PRESENTATION!!! Harbin (I hired him to
perform some shows so I could spend time with him, watch him do the
effect and learn it from him) in fact only had the subject in
LEVITATION STATE for 3 SECONDS. THREE SECONDS. But it was Killer in
his hands. Just like the Zig Zag. I have NEVER SEEN ANYONE do the Zig
Zag correctly. They way Harbin did it and how it is WORD FOR WORK, MOVE
FOR MOVE in his book has BEEN COMPLETELY IGNORED BY EVERY PERFORMER
THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN DO IT.

Grant has a book on levitations that costs only a few bucks. The tricks
can be built for a few bucks too... It depends on the set up and how
elaborate anyone wants to go.
My fave is his self levi with a shopping bag. Andre Kole has a killer
version of that where he has a box around him and he lifts the box up
(it is bottomless) and there are no feet showing below. Boy I would
KILL for that one. I have just seen a PRIVATE VIDEO of his latest whre
he walks on water - tite closeups of his feet in a glass water tank. A
baffler to say the least. And HIS vanish of the statue of Liberty (you

Well -- I got some! Yep, genuine X-RATED Final Words! Can't tell you,
in print, what they say, but they produce a random foul comment. About
the size of a pack of cigarettes.
Want one? Here's the deal - FIRST THREE people to send me a private
message ordering 'em, followed by a check for $15 + $1 for postage,
will get 'em. If there are six more orders I'll order more. First
come, first served. Proceeds to go to MAGIC! fund.
These things normally cost $18 - $20 bucks, if you can find 'em.
Remember, this is the totally foul, X-RATED version. Batteries (2 AA
cells) not included.

Re: BOOKS, ETC.
A couple of items for you. Regarding Racherbaumer's "Marlo Without
Tears" book, I like it. It is a typical Racherbaumer/Marlo book in
that it is short on presentation and some of the effects aren't all
that practical (and are probably only writen for the "historical"
record). But the tears book does have some good items in it. For
example, I've taken a couple of the handlings given for the Streamlined
21 Card Trick, along with Marlo's earlier version in "The Cardician",
and made a nice little routine to show to people who know the usual 21
card trick. The book is definitely worth a read.
I have one of the Fulves brainwave books (the first one). If you
haven't gotten a copy by the time I go back to Washington in early
March, I'll bring it along for you to read. It's an interesting book
with some neat ideas in it. I've been meaning to play around with one
of the ideas in it, the Omni deck. We may have to ask Max or T.A. if
they have any thoughts on it!
RPG - you poor guy!!!!!!

Re: JOB
You asked if I worked on the space shuttle program. Actually I'm
working on a software research project for the space station program at
the Johnson Space Center in Houston. It's a lot of fun and I get to
play with some really neat things, mostly computer related. Ever now
and then I get into some of the other labs to see what's new (and if
there's anything that might be neat magic-wise). I've actually found
a good item or two. Familiar with the trick Wiregrams (a straight
piece of wire placed into a hot cup of water bends into a "3" and a
heart shape to indicate that some previously selected card was the 3 of
hearts). The metal used is Nitinol.
I played with the idea of making paper-clips out of them. These
clips could then be bent into any shape that a spectator wanted.
Afterwards you would restore it to its paper-clip shape by dipping it
into hot water, "burning" it, or whatever. I had dressed it up with
some presentation and thought it might be pretty good. I found out
while researching the idea that someone had already beat me to it.
Another thing that I've thought about is fiber optics. There's got
to be some neat uses for these. I know of only one mental trick that
uses the principle and it's pretty good.
Another item is non-linear optical material. Walter Blaney has
nifty ideas for this stuff.
Oh well, food for thought....

What about the women who booked herself and her dog on a flight. When
she arrived at her dest. the dog did not. However the next day when
the dog did show up, it was dead. The airlines an effort to avoid
a lawsuit, decided to replace her dog, so they went out an bought one
and del'd it to her. She cried out, "this is not my dog, my dog was
dead, and I was shipping him home to bury."
Don't know what this has to do with the lunch, hope it has nothing to

Re: LEVELAT{A{ATION
Doesn't the Harbin Chair Suspension require some sort of
special folding chairs. Seems like I read this somewhere...got a
feeling it was ina REEL WORKS from GENII sometime back and you
found some chairs and were going to bring them back from Jolly
Ole.
The chair suspension in general has always been a fave of
mine. WALTER BLANEY gave me a design (his?) ten years ago or so
ago but I never built it.
Seems like to me it would be stronger effect if you could
somehow remove the chair from under the volunteer's head instead
of the feet. I know there is a weight distribution problem. Maybe
find a volunteer with big feet !!!
A few years back, Elton John had a rig to levitate and
then rotate his grand piano (and him) while playing a number. The
audience loved it but Elton dropped it because it made him
uneasy. Probably somewhat dangerous too as a piano on a piano
player could definately STOP THE SHOW.
Always thought the shooting a ribbon through a girl?
would be a neat thing to do in a vodvil type act which was played
for laughs. I've considered doing something along these lines and
playing it for a country music audience (somebody will be doing
it next week probably) but instead of me shooting have the girl?
shoot through me - maybe a volunteer ?? since I'd be wearing the
gizmo. Maybe at the Annual Labor Day Picnic we do every year,
though I vowed after the last one (people staying around for daze
after and gate crashers) NEVER MORE! but we'll see since I'm
traveling with a more genteel crowd these daze.....Hope things
are good (were good) in AraZone etc....Keep up the good work..

Re: HARBIN
The "major" part left out is the spectator coming up, the girl is in
the cabinet and spectator (a woman) pushes the middle section over and
it stops. Harbins says "Do you know why it stopped? Because there's a
girl inside." He then pushes the blades (they are narrower than the
full width of the box) thru. Then asks woman to push... AND WHEN SHE
PUSHES THE PARTITION THE LOOK ON HER FACE WHEN IT GOES IS "THE
PRESENATION" HIGHLIGHT. Much likethe spectator reaching into the "empty
egg bag" and finding the egg!
You see, Harbin worked almost exclusively in Cabaret situations,
practically surrounded and very close to the audience. That's why Zig
Zag, his chair suspension, and others can be done UP CLOSE AND
SURROUNDED.

Re: LEVELAT{A{ATION
If you had someone knowledgable, like Blaney, John Gaughan, etc., build
it you could take the chair out from the "wrong" end. Would need to be
built like the Golden Gate Bridge!
Shooting thru ribbon is a killer idea.. and as a gag like you say would
be great. I used to do the Sword thru MY body (but am now too fat for
the gaff)!!!!!!!! I also want to do Zig Zag HORIZONTALLY like you are
sawing someone in 3 and the middle piece falls out to the floor!
There is a routine advertised now where you try to shoot a target on a
deck of cards and theflowers get shot, the table gets blown away, etc.
I love the concept and if were working a big time show ala Copperfield
would do a version. I have a gaff that belonged to a vodvil act that
would (when in a bucket or box -- I put in snake basket) shoot 38 cal
blanks at pre determined sequence (spring wound) and would have a
gunfight with the snake. Did this one time (then the actual owner of
the gaff took it back!!) and the audinece -- and me -- was laughing so
hard I believe I had a 70-percent "Pissed in my Pants" rate!

So far the scheduled events late this year are the annual public show,
which will be Halloween weekend, and the national FCM convention. Have
to get back to you with the date on it. The agenda looks good. Maybe
start a little earlier Friday night. Most out of town folk should be in
before 8:00. It seems like all incoming flights to Nashville happen
around 7:00. Agree totally on first class lecturers. Emphasis on
teaching, not only tricks but presentation and psycology. Two lectures
and two shows on Saturday will still leave the dealers plenty of time
to do their thing. What would a bar magician expect to make for the
weekend? Just curious about ballpark numbers. I know 7 to 3, 5 to 1, 3
to 3 in extra innings. Sorry, got off the track for a second.
We talking about having Daryl come in in March. I talked to a couple of
members about who they would like to see. Paul Harris was year a couple
of years ago. A few others I've mentioned before. Maybe the best way to
answer your question (from your last message on the board) about
lecturers, would be to ask who would you recommend?
Got to go, but just want to say how much I enjoy your stuff on the

One bit of quick advice while typing on-line. If you use a wireless

forgot to switch off my mike while we did the post show rap session (

Sooner or later most performers have been "gotten" by a live mike. Or
a live camera...
I used to work in broadcasting, and we had a habit of turning on one of
the cameras so that the guys in the control room could watch the
weather girl put her mike on. Had two control rooms in two nearby
cities. Folks in the other town ran the general stuff and we did the
news. One night something crashed over there and so they cut to us
early, yelling "Take it!" on the intercom... Yep, we took it OK.

preoccupation. I try to keep a deck of cards and some half dollars on

practice shifts and passes. 10 years will be here all too soon.

didn't know about it. I remember a lady trying to sell her tickets

over the phone. Quite a long line that snaked around the building for
the second show. He must be very popular as it looked like a sellout
or very nearly so. If you have seen his act you probably know this one
but I thought one of his funniest stories was when he was around nine
years old and his mom was making the big Thanksgiving meal for the
whole family. She realizes the table is all ready before the guests
arrive except they are out of napkins. Quick, Jay! Run to the store
and get a big box of napkins! He hops on his bike and peddles as fast
as he can and says- Mister! Mister! My mom needs a big box of napkins,
it's an emergency! He comes home with a big box of sanitary napkins!
The whole bit was hilarious. Sometimes the true tales are the

Re: ANNEMANN'S POSTCARD
Assuming without checking seems to be endemic amongst magic writers.
You have the same misconception as most magicians that John Booth is a
Doctor of Divinity. In fact he only went as far as earning a
Bachelor's degree in Divinity from Meadville Theological School in
1942.
His use of the "Dr." title comes not from an earned degree, but from an
honorary one he received from Boston's Portia Law School in 1950. As
you may know these degrees are handed out to people who've either made
a donation to a school, or as "honorariums" for speaking engagements.
The fact that he's a "LittD" not a DD is in Whaley's _Who's Who in
Magic_, substantiated by Booth's own rather murky entry in older
general _Who's Whos_.
In academia it's considered poor taste to preface your name with a
strictly honorary degree. Much the same as in military circles it is
considered ludicrous for a "Kentucky Colonel" to insist he be addressed
by his "military rank". There's no denying magic has a strong tradition
of performers adding unearned titles of "Doctor" and "Professor", but
I thought this practice had died just after the turn of the century,
unless used in a pseudo-bombastic/comedic vein.

Re: ANNEMANN'S POSTCARD
But, recall that Booth said in his 1984 piece on Annemann "no one
dreamed of his approaching death." If Hilliar's brain blow-out six
years earlier had "inspired" Annemann to gas himself in 1942 as Booth
implied in his 1986 article on _The Sphinx_, why didn't we hear about
it in the earlier extensive piece specifically on Annemann and his
suicide? In all that has been written on Annemann's suicide no one
other than Booth has made this passing and later assertion. Is there
any substantiation -- even rumors -- from those closer to Annemann?

Re: MAGIC! LUNCHEON REVIEW
If you read the time and date stamp in the header of this message you
will note that the time for the First Annual MAGIC! Luncheon at the
Magic Castle in Hollywood has come and gone.
To start off with let me say this; "WE HAD A GREAT TIME!!!!!!!"
In my opinion, the First Annual MAGIC! Luncheon was a roaring success
with seven of the eleven people who signed up being present. Those in
attendance included yours truly Darrell Murphy, Wayne Powers, Marvin
Stern, SYSOP David Lichtman, Mimi Hertzog, Stan Lake, and Ron Bieber.
Drop-in guest included: Joe Farina, and Greg McKay. There were a few
other Drop-in guest but I for one lost track (maybe someone else can
fill in the blank spots).
We meet downstairs at the main bar of the Magic Castle and around
11:20am people started showing up one by one. At first it was a little
difficult because many of us had never meet face-to-face. After a few
pleasantries were exchanged it was like we had known each other for
years and most of us have known each other for years by way of
telecommunications. At around 11:40am we decided that everyone who was
coming was there so we were shown to the Houdini Room where we had a
chance to get to know each other better over salad, chili and I don't
know what else. SYSOP David Lichtman passed out the first signed,
numbered, limited edition MAGIC! buttons to all who were present. The
official MAGIC! button looks great and I will leave it up to David to
announce the winner and saying that won the contest.
We talked about Magic, MAGIC!, Computers, Card Tricks, and whatever
else was voiced. We even got a demonstration of THE FINAL WORD which
David Lichtman is selling. I can't reveal here what they say but if
you haven't heard one you need to, but not if you offend easily.
We also talked about alternative methods of identifying MAGIC! members
while in the Magic Castle by making up a colored back plate to put
your Magic Castle lapel pin through.
Around 1:30pm we broke and went our separate ways but with the
knowledge that we would meet again either in person or by modem.
Thanks to all who made the luncheon a success.

So far so good my only problem is getting a credit card/direct call so
the software can dial the bbs for me... to many wait for tone and the
n input some more numbers, my software is a little limited.

Re: ASCENSION TRANSPOSITION
After I asked you if you knew the source for the variation of your
"Ascension," I did a little digging and came up with it myself. It's
in "Randy Wakeman Presents" by Mike Maxwell. It seems to be basically
the same plot as "Ascension" but is complicated unnecessarily. It's
cluttered with OPEC counts, three-card block pushoffs, open botop
changes, etc. Simple really is better. I'm not sure if you agree, but
I think that sometimes magicians end up fooling themselves when they
believe that the audience will accept things like four cards handled as
one, etc. On another topic, I noticed that you mentioned you used to do
some restaurant walk-around. Did you do any mentalism at all? I've
been trying to come up with some questions for you in regard to the
interview for "The Magic Menu" that we discussed, and perhaps some
information in that regard will help me get a handle on which way to
go. Thanks.

Re: ROTH BOOK
OK, will leave Sid's name on it. Yes, there was more in the package.
Sure wish we could buy that stuff at those prices!

Re: MAGIC! LUNCH
I know the feeling -- all software is a little limited.
