Re: TROUBLE WIT

If anybody does Trouble Wit, or is planning to, here's a way to at
least quadruple the life of the thing. I got it from a Frank Herman
book (Magic, Inc.) Before you use it, spread it out on a flat surface
and give it two coats of acrylic sealer on both sides. This makes it
almost moisture proof. Then get a ball of 1" invisible tape and put the
tape all around the free edges and bend it over. This prevents tearing
it. Then, with it still flat, put a short piece of tape across each of
the small creases where you will fold and unfold it. It seems to take
forever, but I have found the time spent very worthwhile. It will last
indefinitely. Oh yes, put two layers of tape over the short creases
near rhe free edges, where it always wears out first.
It takes at least two trouble wits, reinforced as above to master
any routine you dream up and that can get expensive. You can buy them
wholesale from:
     Mr. Jim Reilly
     16 Lugton St.
     Hamilton, 2001,
     New Zealand
I think he is the only person in the world making the darn things, as
he supplies Abbotts, Tannens and Magic, Inc.
Thought you might be interested. It's a great stunt and while not
strictly magical, showcases your personality well. I use it table
hopping.

Re: PLATFORM TRICKS CLOSE UP.

One of my pet peeves about close-up magic is that so darn many of them
involve cards and coins. Now, I don't have anything at all against
card/coin tricks. I couldn't work if I did...but I like to include as
much variety as I can in the tricks I do. Therefore, I am always on the
lookout for tricks that can be done close up that don't involve cards
or coins. I think I have just about exhausted the usual close up
effects (chop cup, sponge tricks, gypsy thread etc.) so I am now also
looking for tricks that are traditionally platform type effects but
which can be done close up, like Trouble wit, prof. Nightmare etc. Do
any of you have similar opinions and do you have any suggestions for
tricks that can be done close up that do not require cards or coins???

Re: MURRAY BODY SERVANTE

A few messages ago, I ranted on about a "Vest Servante." I checked with
my dealer and the correct name is "Murray Body Servante." The
instructions say that you can wear it beneath your vest or inside your
trousers, but I haven't tried that. The instructions also say that you
can steal from ot too, by attaching a thumb hook of some sort, but I
haven't tried that either. However, if you want to ditch coins or a
small deck of cards, I'm here to tell you it's great! BTW, it's
described in Hoffman's "Later Magic," but the Murray/Nielson model is
greatly improved over the original, I think.

Re: NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE

This message is a mishmash of magic info, so read it all the way
through, you might find some interesting info in it.

In the local paper (Contra Costa Times, in Walnut Creek, CA), one of
the local columnists, Gary Bogue (author of "ISIS"), got a letter about
a leghorn chicken that laid a 7.5 pound egg, and the person writing
wanted to know how this happened. Gary explained that the first egg
must not have left the ovaduct soon enough, and a second egg formed
around it. I know, I know, what does this have to do with magic? Well,
according to Gary Bogue, magicians have used this chicken trait "since
before Houdini" to put unusual objects in eggs (i.e., rings, coins,
etc..). Does anybody know of any magicians that have used this fact in
their illusions? If you want to write to this guy his address is Gary
Bogue, c/o The Contra Costa Times, PO Box 5088, Walnut Creek, CA 94596.

Did anybody catch Morton Downey Jr. on CNBC during the week of Feb.
17-23? Blackstone was a guest in the second half of the show. The show
was a repeat from, I THINK, Nov. 90. Blackstone performed the vanishing
bird cage (No, really!), Selected-Card-Name-Found-In-Matchbook (Got a
better name?), $1 to $20 Bill Switch, and the Brainwave Deck effect.
All of the effects were well performed, but there was one shot during
the Bill Switch where the camera was aimed right toward his thumb tip.
I wonder if any laymen saw the tip?

Here's a short, neat little effect I created (and PRESUME to be
original) over the weekend. The 2 of clubs is shown on the top of the
deck, the magician then rolls the 2C into a tube. With a wave of the
hand, two "clubs" roll out of the tube. The card is then unrolled and
shown to be blank! To set up the deck, have a blank face card with a
back that matches the rest of the deck, on top of the deck, and the 2C
as the second card. Now for the "Clubs": Pop some popcorn, the spray
paint 2 popped kernals black. Place these kernals in your thumb tip,
and you're almost ready. Set the deck of cards in your pocket, with the
thumb sitting by the bottom card of the deck. Take the Thumb Tip out
when you take out the deck, and keep it hidden. Do a double lift to
show the 2C on top, then place both cards back on the deck, and set the
top(blank) card aside. When you set the deck down, it is a perfect
opportunity to get the thumb tip from under the deck. Then roll up the
blank card around the thumb tip, say the magic words, and presto! Pour
out your two clubs. You of course can use any card for this, as long as
there is something representative in the thumb tip. You could force the
2C, bring it to the top, palm a blank face om top of it, and perform
the effect. You could also produce a card silk, if you desire to do
this trick with picture cards.

Last, but not least, would somebody tell me about the effect M.C>
Hammer performed on the Grammys? I don't just mean what he did, but
how the stage was, and when whatever happened happened? I take a breath
now.. --Scott

Almost a year, "Wobbles." The program at Desert Magic in a couple of
weeks will be the official first anniversary.
Yeah, you musta missed the contest results - They were posted. The
winning button was one from Jonathan Kufthal and read "818 896-7450
MEANS MAGIC!" The lowest numbers in a SIGNED AND NUMBERED EDTION were:
#1 - Jonathan, #2 - Sysop, #3 - Pete Biro, #4 - Tabby Crabb (Pete and
Tabby are the MAGIC! Advisory Board Members), #5 thru something are
reserved, along with a handsome certificate (Yeah, they will be mailed
soon!), for charter contributors ($$$ - and there is still time to make
a charter contribution), the next set of numbers (it is late and I'm
too tired to look up the numbers, hope you will forgive me) went to the
fortunate few who attended the First MAGIC! Luncheon at the Magic
Castle, and the last of the special series will go to MAGIC! Members
attending the Anniversary Get-Together at Desert Magic. After that,
the remaining (non-limited) buttons will be available to MAGIC!
Members, memorabilia collectors, and the general public.
A "Best of MAGIC!" is a GREAT IDEA and you are one of the first to
suggest it. But not exactly the first. A preliminary plan for its
publication is being put together and we would welcome suggestions from
everyone on how to make it great (and on how to sell it, etc.).
Profits would go to MAGIC!

Re: WABBITS

Ah yes, bunnies. Miniature lop-eared, eh? I may be wrong here, but I
can't recall ever seeing a small lop-ear that didn't grow to about
15-20 pounds. Better make that a BIG dove pan!

Buns, my furry show-stealer, is a dwarf Polish topping the scales at
under 5 pounds. He was the runt of the litter. Check with your local
pet shop/rabbit expert, as I'd advise getting as small a rabbit as
possible. Not that I have anything against more, uh, VISIBLE rabbits,
but you'll have a hard time buying any livestock effects that they'll
FIT in.

Yes, rabbits do chew. Yes, their cages DO smell, necessitating daily
clean-up. Rabbit urine has a rather pungent odor. And they just love
to spray it all over their cage, often, I'm sure, with the intent of
seeing just how far they can get it to go! I've heard of rabbits that
were litter-box trained, but after giving Buns the run of the house,
the only place he DIDN'T wee-wee was in the litter-box. I've managed
to compensate for the aroma problem and ease of changing thusly: Buns'
cage is one of the typical wire small animal cages with a slide out
catch pan underneath the floor of the cage. I used to line the pan
with newspaper, but the galvanized steel was starting to corrode due to
the acidity and/or salinity of the urine. So now, I plop the whole pan
inside of a 35 gallon plastic trash bag, then fill the pan with that
fresh-step kitty litter with the green deodorizer chunks in it. When
changing time comes, I pull out the pan, and pull the top edges of the
bag back over the pan (thus turning the bag inside out) and the kitty
litter and associated icky-stuff are now safely inside the bag, ready
for disposal. (Hmm, pet care with the anal-retentive magician?)

As for effects... Produce 'em, kids pet 'em, then later you vanish
'em. Balloon to bunny box, dove pan (big dove pan?) livestock bag, and
production from assorted scraps of brightly colored rags. If you
produce 'em fast (speaking kid-shows here) you'll LOSE the
entertainment value obtained by drawing out the production.
Personally, I have Buns in a mirror box (lift lid, and mirror falls
down revealing bunny) and tell the kids I've brought my magical rabbit
Buns, with me to the show, and here he is. I display the box and the
kids are quick to tell me that there isn't a rabbit in the box.
Without looking INTO the box, I argue with them that of COURSE there's
a rabbit in this box, Buns lives in here, where else would he be?
Kids yell. More by-play ending with me looking into the box (from the
front) and discovering that Buns is missing. More laughs as I set the
box down, and begin frantically running around in the audience, lifting
a kid here and looking underneath them, lifting an arm here. Oh my,
Buns has run away! Sadly, I return to the box, telling the children
that I'm really sorry Buns is missing. I cover the box with a large
silk, and as soon as the front of the box is hidden from view, I lift
the lid dropping bunny into the box proper. Standing behind the box,
I pull the silk back until the edge of the silk reaches the bottom of
the front box opening. Not enough for them to see into the box, but
enough so that Buns will stick his nose out from under it. When the
kids see this, they explode! I continue on as if nothing happened,
still apologizing for the missing rabbit. Then, absent-mindedly, I
continue to pull the silk back a little more, fully revealing the
rabbit within the box. The kids are going nuts trying to tell me that
the rabbit IS in the box. I drag this out until the kids are at fever
pitch, then finally I realize what all the yelling is about, and look
into the box. When I see Buns in the box, I scream loudly, and jump
back as far as I can. More laughter.

Get the idea? Take a 10 second production, and turn it into 5 minutes
of pure entertainment.

Re: WABBITS

If at all possible (intimate settings, b-day parties, etc.) let the
children PET the rabbit. Don't let them HOLD it--too much danger of
them dropping it, being soiled by it, or (heaven forbid!)
scratched/bitten by it. I have a thick plastic top hat that came with
a magic set (I think Toys 'R Us carries them) that I plop Buns into and
carry IT around so the kids can pet the bunny. The hat keeps Buns
secured, eliminates soiling dangers, and is easier to hang on to when
being mobbed by scores of hands... You'd be surprised at the number of
children that have never petted a bunny these days...

I also don't vanish Buns. The two doves I use, do get vanished in a
nite club take-apart dove vanish, but the rabbit stays with me. He
waves good-bye to the children as I make my exit.

Anything else? Yes, don't ever buy a GUINEA PIG, but that's another
story...

Heba Haba. Real name: Al Andrucci. ("Heba Haba" was his pet magic word,
like "abracadabra" -- it became his trademark, and eventually his name.
He came from Pittsburgh, moved to Chicago in the 1930's. Primary
inspiration was Matt Schulien. He performed as a magic bartender in a
number of different establishments, including his own bar at the Rogers
Park Hotel in the years following the end of World War II. Probably his
longest stint was at the New York Lounge, which (until it closed a few
years ago) was located down the street from Magic, Inc. After that, Al
continued to perform a couple of nights a week at Schulien's
restaurant. His magic was fast-paced and very funny. As with many bar
magicians, his work was often risque, but delivered with an impish
charm that allowed him tremendous license. His best signature trick was
based on the sugar cube trick found in most beginner's magic books (in
which a pencilled-on initial magically transfers to the spectator's
palm), but Al took it in extraordinary directions. He died of a heart
attack; he was 77.

In general I agree, but 1) they are good complete overview of the types
of effects a mentalist does, 2) I agree some effects are much better
than others but there are a number in there that are quite good and
convincing and easy to do (you do have to sift thru the lower quality
effects to find them) 3) I have yet to see a book that is a compondium
of tricks have 100% winners (Focus excepted possibly).
.
Based on your recommnendation I will get Corinda's book as well. Based
on what I have read and seen on TV and live (including your video)
mentalist magic requires even more showmanship than "conventional"
magic. The visual portion is signifigantly reduced and the performer
will recieve no help from a flash or colorfull production etc. hence
the performer must do more. That is not to say another type of
magician should do less, just the mentalist will get little or no help
from a flashy trick supplied by someone else.

Re: TRICK CHICKS

I'd like to float a question into the ether out there for discussion.
This is by no means an original thought, but it's one that's been
plaguing me, and I would love to know everyone's thoughts.
This is the question:
.
Ready?
.
Why are there so few female magicians?
.
I suspect the answer is neither so simple, nor as complicated as many
people's first guess.
.
Let me know your thoughts.

Re: HELLO

I think that at a primitive level comedy and magic fulfill two
different needs. The fusion of the two is not created by the audience,
it is created by the comedian or the magician. When "comedy magic" is
created it is always a compromise between these two forms. And the
comedy always has to predominate. Have you ever seen a "comedy magic"
act in which the magic predominated?

Re: HEADLESS WOMAN

The cover shot on last weeks Amusement Business Magazine
of the midway at the So. Fla Fair and Expo has magic right in the
middle of the tabloid sized page. THE HEADLESS WOMAN "an
amazingly real illusion", "see her beautiful body without a
head", "still living and breathing inside" has a pretty good line
of people going inside at 25 cents a pop. This idea (and probably
the presentation of same) has been around for decades.
Houdini was a sideshow performer, as the story goes,
before that fateful day when a dogeared copy of Robert-Houdin's
MEMOIRS fell into his young hands. I fear this book isn't as
widely read today as during Carl Jones heyday when this great
publisher reprinted several of the excellent older books. I know
there was a Dover reprint available called "King of the
Conjurers" but it too is out of print.
Dover still reprints quite a few of the great books of
magic such as Annemann's CARD MAGIC, PRACTICAL MENTAL MAGIC;
Downs', THE ART OF MAGIC; Bobo's, MODERN COIN MAGIC; Hoffmann's,
MODERN MAGIC; Hofzinser's, CARD CONJURING; etc. You can get their
catalog by calling 516-294-7000 or checking with your favorite
magic book dealer, though these books are priced so low that it
almost isn't worth a dealers time to carry them. Jeff Busby was
kind enough to supply me with the Hofzinser card book for around
five dollars last year.
Annemann's card magic book has a number of excellent
effects that you don't see everyday (and some you do under
different guises by other writers).
Glad to hear that Ray Mertz will be writing a regular
column in MAGIC MENU starting next issue. Ray is an excellent bar
and close-up magician who works a lot at the Forks Hotel plus
trade shows, lectures, etc. Ray told me that he started Harrison
Carroll on his path to being a magician. He wishes he'd gotten
Harrison to promise to pay him a commission on all the trade
shows he works now as Harrison is one of the top workers in this
field. Ray said he wouldn't have to work nearly so hard and could
retire on his 15%.

I'm almost certain that this is some clever magicians patter which
someone heard as an explanation for how a magi got a ring or something
else in an egg. Someone took the patter seriously, and it became part
of local lore or something.
Why am I so positive? Because there are a million better ways to load

Re: THANK YOU

Thanks for your reply to my message. I have used several tricks with
bills, namely polaroid money, Cash Galore, Bill switch, Marked bill
into lippincott box, torn and restored bill etc. One of the most
effective tricks I have ever done for laymen with a cigarette is just
to vanish a lit cigarette. I just use a standard routine from Bert
Allerton's "The Close-up Magician." People come back as long as a year
later and ask if I burned up after the trick. The fact that the
cigarette was lit really bothers them.
I have several versions of paper to bills, but I am never able to
hide the folded packet to my satisfaction. I realize the problem is
mine because a number of magicians, the immortal Fred Kaps for one,
made quite a reputation with it, but in my hands it never seems to fly.
If you ever get to Vegas, be sure and watch Mike Skinner do his
thimble routine. It is a masterpiece! However, I don't think I could
master it if I practiced a hundred years. In his hands it is delight.
Also in Vegas, Daniel Cros does a beautiful thimble routine. His is
completely different from Mike's.
Although it involves cards, I have found that "Chronologue" put
out by Rich Bloch's "Collector's Workshop" to be an absolutely baffling
effect for laymen. This is another trick that people bring their
friends in to see...and it's completely self working.
Again, thank you for taking the time to reply.

Re: CHINK-A-CHINK

Nothing personal (I have never seen you perform) but I think C-A-C died
with Al Goshman. "I think I broke a chink." I'll have to play with this
trick. Thanks for the idea. Any number of things have been used for it:
sugar cubes, bottle caps, wire nuts, cream containers, dice and on and
on. I remember seeing a dealer item once that did it with little metal
cones. Actually the cones were truncated, so they looked like minature
fez's. One of them had a shell over it and the shell became the extra
chink and could be ditched at the end simply by nesting it over the
final cone. From a theatrical point of view, the trick, like most
assembly tricks, lacks a climax. You are simply doing the same trick
four times. Could it be cut down to three objects without losing (and
hopefully gaining) some effect? I personally feel that too many magic
tricks are repetitious.
Thanks for the reply. I'll work on it.

Re: CHINK-A-CHINK

Chink-a-chink is indeed an ancient effect but so are the cups and balls
and linking rings. They can all be done sloppily or boringly or
entertainingly or even artfully. I think it depends on the audience
you are working for. An older crowd or one with magicians is probably
sure to have seen C-
Chink-a-chink whereas a younger crowd will probably not have. Tricks
rise and fade in popularity and maybe as you said Chink-a-chink died
with Al Goshman. In over a year at the Castle I had never seen anyone
other than myself perform it. It was for a group in their late 20's,
non-magicians and no one had seen it before. So, for some crowds it
may be ok.

Re: HELLO

I will certainly agree that in many -- perhaps most -- comedy magic
acts there is a "compromise," usually resulting in an act which is weak
both in terms of magic and comedy. However, I'll dispute your comment
that "the fusion... is not created by the audience." In fact, many
audiences find inherent comedy in magic (and here I am _not_ talking
about condescending laughter at a serious magic act presented lamely).
I think there are shared roots in the historical traditions of
comedy and magic, which would require a lengthy discussion of shamanism
and related anthropological concepts to adequately comment upon.
Suffice it to say that such roots do, in my opinion, exist, and thus
create a splendid organic relationship between the two forms which can
be used to create results which are artistically successful.
You ask, have I ever seen a "comedy magic" act in which the magic
predominated. Yes. How about John Thompson, for starters. Roy Benson.
Billy McComb. I could go on.
But what is wrong with a comedy magic act in which the comedy
predominates? Michael Finney certainly fits that description, but
surely you'd agree his is a wonderful act, and the magic (although
secondary) does not suffer.
I suppose in some theoretical sense the ideal combination would be
such that the magic and comedy balance equally. Mac King probably fits
that; his audiences walk away with a twin perception of him as both a
fine magician and a fine comedian. But I hardly think this balance is
necessary per se.
There are more than enough examples of good comedy magicians, as
well as countless bad ones. But the reasons the bad ones are bad has
nothing to do with the viability of combining the forms.

A few messages ago I commented on Richard Osterlund's new video,
"Challenge Magic", produced by Jeff Busby. Although I raved about
the production, I was "mildly disappointed" with the product
appearances. After a few private messages with Jeff, we
determined that I just bought my first "Pirate Video". It didn't
even dawn on me at the time that a "reputable" dealer would even
have such a product. I feel as badly as Mr. Busby about it and
rest assured I will be more careful in the future. As soon as I
can gather the money together, I will order an authorized copy
from Jeff directly and will send the "pirate" copy to him to do
with as he pleases.
I still heartily endorse the material for anyone into "Close up"
or "Parlor magic" as it is filled with two hours of hard hitting
material, and again, I will soon be proud to own a "legal" copy
for myself.

Re: TRICK CHICKS

I agree 100% that women are equal in the entertainment field. And
that, should they put effort into it, they all would be as talented and
creative at magic as men.
I also agree music and the other arts appeal to people on a very
different level. Perhaps because people are more *willing* to respond
to these arts than they are to be simply mystified.
As the answer to the original question, I think we need to look at
*why* we, men, become magicians. For me, the answer was the obvious --
it was a crutch during my pre-adolescent days. I'm sure lots of people
were the same. Why don't women put their drives, insecurities, etc
into this avenue? Do they have better avenues? Is it not socially
acceptable?
This is tangential, but I've always felt the public's relationship with
the magician always had a bit of scorn mixed in -- on the public side.
Probably because we begin with the proposition that we're going to fool
them! (Penn & Teller tap into this scorn real well.)
I'd love to get a larger, genuine discussion on the woman-magician
question going here. I think the answer will throw insight on why we
are magicians, and magic itself.

Hmmm. I just got back from the Castle and found your note. Musta
missed you there. I'll be going again next Saturday, perhaps we can
meet then?

As for how much use justifies obtaining a rabbit, guess that's a matter
for each to decide. Personally, if I only did 1 kid show a year, I'd
get a rabbit. Of course, I've been using rabbits in my act for well on
20 years now and AM rather biased. Like it or not, when laymen think
of tricks magicians do, rabbits out of hats is high up on the list. I
guess the real determining point is the smiles on the faces of the
kids. Producing endless streams of silks, making balls appear and
disappear, joining big shiny rings together is one thing, but when that
cute, living, breathing RABBIT makes its appearance, you might as well
stop the show! Kids go nuts over animals. And I capitalize on that
fact. To the tune of a dove from silks, silk to balloon (ala dye
tube), balloon to dove, and then a bit later on in the routine, the
mirror-box rabbit production. Remember "Radio Rabbit" off the Ginn
video? Did you see the excitement caused when the rabbit stuck his
nose out of the innards of the radio? You get my point, then...

Anyway, hope to meet up with you at the Castle next weekend. Perhaps
we can discuss the bunny topic further then.

Sounds like your close-up efforts are already quite diversified...I
don't quite understand your hesitation to use another coin or card
effect.
I do admit that I probably have a prejudicial mindset against thimble
routines. I'm not sure why. I think that, conceptually, the premise
is silly. The most remarkable magic done with thimbles seems to be
"explainable" in the minds of most laymen. Perhaps because thimbles
draw so much attention to the fingertips, they offer an "illusion" of
nothing more than finger-flickin' manipulation...not magic. Once
again, though, this is entirely subjective.

No sooner had I written a message saying I had never seen anyone

Thompson do his vernerable routine using sugar cubes. It was mentioned
that Chink-a-chink may have died but in Johnny's hands it seemed to be
a work of art. In fact, his entire routine had nothing new in content
but it was so well presented that the audience gave him the loudest
applause I heard all evening. Certainly is something to aspire to!

It's not out of line at all, David. I was just making sure that you
knew I intend to credit MAGIC! everytime we use something in THE MAGIC
MENU. I just felt that your "reminders" each time this issue has come
up indicates that we would "lift" something without permission or
credit. I know you don't mean it that way...it just makes me feel that
way, I guess. I do have a hypersensitivity to keeping THE MAGIC MENU
all above board, which is how I know you feel about MAGIC! Please be
assured that I will always credit MAGIC! when appropriate. It has been
of great help to me both professionally and personally, and I hope that
my participation has enhanced MAGIC! a little also. And, of course, I
will send you the issue in which Max's piece on Heba Haba Al will
appear (your name appears also as MAGIC!'s sysop). I hope this clears
up our differences...which upon reflection are not really differences
at all but simply different perspectives.

different in concept (yours [Karrell's?] uses a signed selection and
finishes by utilizing a duplicate) and I don't feel it's original with
Mullica. I printed it as you submitted it, hoping that the source
mystery would untangle itself (as it presumably has, thanks to Tim
Wenk). If you feel that the Karrell Fox trick is similar or the same,
we will definitely try to fit in a "Letter to the Editor." I do feel
however that it should not be in any way an apology. I believe very
strongly that creative minds can come up with a similar creation
independently of each other. Thanks for the kind words. Issue #5 is

I'm not going to appologize which isn't my point, but to provide
some more information as I'm as interested as anyone in origins
of effects and would love to know more about people who tear
cards to bits and restore same. The method I use is a take off on
a center tear and billet switch applied to cards which I
definately didn't invent, only adapt. I understand Roterberg had
a torn and restored card in his New Era Card Trix but I haven't
seen that one either. Surely somebody on MAGIC! has Krazy Like A
Fox and can provide one of us with a copy of "Rip Off" but for
the life of me I can't believe it's exactly the same trick but
would like to see what the discussion is all about since I live

The purpose of my intended letter to your magazine most
certainly wouldn't be an appology for something I did or didn't
do, but since you seemed so worried about what your readers might
think about where "Torn" came from I thought I'd exonerate you
and MM just to help out, but that's just the kind of guy I am.
Maybe I should think more about myself and less about others as
this seems to be how most people live anyway. Maybe I'll just
give up and join the rest of the world.
Don't take me wrong. So far I just want to help anyone
who is making a positive effort and I believe you and MM (I can
call your newsletter that since the other MM folded) are doing
just that. That's one reason I got you and Ray together as I
believe in what he (Ray) is doing for himself, his family and
magic. If I owe anyone an appology, its my family for spending so
much time away from them following my love affair with magic and
magicians; but they love me. What else can I say?

Assuming you're serious about this notion, it's a dreadful idea. In the

Re: HELLO

I would certainly agree with the first paragraph of your message - most
"comedy magic" acts are a weak compromise.
As to shamans and anthropological concepts, I think I could use those
to validate my point. Somehow I can't picture the shaman as Henny
Youngman - "Here, take my wife, please" - to the tribe.
Yes, you did hit on some great names there - John Thompson, Roy Benson,
Billy McComb, Mac King, and Michael Finney. They were one of the
reasons I said "most" in my message. But in each case you are looking
at people who have created a unique fusion of the two forms. The
general run-of-the-mill, as you admit, is a poor compromise.
Still, it gets back to a basic level. Why do people like comedy? Why
do people want magic? I think that if you made those two lists you
would find very little crossover.

Re: RIIIIIIIP !

Professor Tab, my man...

Just looked on page 59 in Clever Like a Fox at "RIP OFF" -- Hey,
it's goooooooood (as Seabrooke might say).

Briefly. Card chosen, deck behind back, tear off index corner,
put card, reversed, into center of deck. Bring out indifferent
card with index piece palmed. Name card. (You peeked at index).
Tear up the card placing index at face so the suckers think it IS
the chosen one. Give spec the index corner, vanish pieces of
indifferent card. Speckled-tater looks thru deck and finds the
card, face up and lo and behold, or hi and behold -- the corner
fits.

I don't remember what you had described and haven't saved any
messages lately, so you can tell me the outcome, if there is one.

My favorite PLOT(S) with torn etc. cards is Gaeton's wherein he
opens the routine by noting the table isn't steady, so he brings
out a long carpenter's spirit level to 'LEVEL' the table. And
folds up a playing card to stick under one leg. THAT CARD
EVENTUALLY is found to be a selected card! The other I do all the
time and I am not telling! Nya, nya, nya (until I see you in
Vegas).

I might add that Karrell Fox's close up stuff is something he
gets little recognition for but is OUTSTANDING. I have worked a
hospitality suite with him and to seehim do SIMPLE, YET MIND
BOGGLING STUFF for lay audiences is amazing.

One of my favorite sayings is, "Simplicity is the keynote to
success!"

My other is (from my old army outfit, "The Big Red One") a slogan
we had over our door at the HQ, "No mission too difficult, no
sacrifice too great, duty first!" I felt a tinge when I saw the
sign on tv "Welcome to IRAQ, courtesy the Big Red One!" along the
"impenetrable line of defense".

I guess I caught a few on my "Rent an act" bit! If I could, I
would have started a FRANCHISE act set up. You see it would save
most magicians having to do ANY THINKING AT ALL.

(Here's where I get in trouble ------ !!!!!) (Probably because I
am WRONG about what I am about to say....) but..... here goes....
MU OPINION!!!!!!!!

I have to say that I am against what I see from the Chavez School
of Magic. It seems to produce a huge number of SAMES. Same
tricks, same looks, same everything.... however, I am sure (but I
don't know) that it is GOOD to learn the basic stuff... but I
would hope the student IS HAMMERED WITH THE THOUGHT TO GO YOUR
OWN WAY. The three graduates I note from the Chavez School that
DID THINK BEYOND, ARE: Channing Pollock, Norm Nielsen and Don
Alan. Three totally distinct and different top pro's that Benny
(Chavez) trained.

One refreshing item of note is the DIVERSITY of acts this coming
Seminar has brought out. A very few birds and I don't think ANY
ZOMBIES.... Still some cards tho -- but wait 'til you see what
one guy does IN THE WAY OF PRESENTING SOME CLASSIC EFFECTS. So
different you will not believe it.

I would say this act is as ORIGINAL as Cardini was when he burst
on the scene.

We should circulate the Cardini tape (or show it at the Seminar)
and see how many magicians REALIZE what was going on in his act.
The best part of his act (to me) was not just the ATTITUDE, but
how many reviewers or articles about his act mentioned the guy on
stage that sleeps through his act? And at the end, Cardini has
produced a Pipe, he notes the sleeping guy has a "better looking"
pipe, and Cardini swaps his for the one on the guy snoozing.

Re: RING FLITE

Jerry Mentzer of "Magic Methods" used to sell a nice one with a locking
reel. I used to do it a lot, but haven't for a long time. Must dig it
out again. The method of hooking the borrowed ring onto the key hook
was pretty good too. I always had an awkward moment when I was hooking
the borrowed ring onto the key hook without fumbling. Here's how I
solved it, for whatever it's worth to you. Remember that old chestnut
where you show three cards in a fan, turn the fan face down, pull out
the center card and put it on the table. Sprctator turns the card over
and it has changed to another card? It uses a flap card and has been
used as a give away...has probably even been in cereal boxes. O.K., I
would have a lady take off her ring, do the changing card trick, have
her pull the center card out and put it on the table(without looking at
it) and put her ring on it so it "Couldn't get away." I would show the
other two cards faces, covering the flap of course, put them in my
pocket, getting the key hook at the same time, pick up her ring with
the other hand and have her turn the tabled card over. During the
surprise of seeing the changed card, you have plenty of time to hook
the ring onto the key hook. Finish as per usual. I realize you asked me
what time it is and I just built you a watch, but thought someone might
get something out of it. Chao.

I am looking for a martin take-up pull for a vanishing bird cage. It
does not necessarily have to be an original Martin pull, it can be
imitation. I know they exist, as long as it is of that type of
quality.
Many collectors have these things and I hope that one of them might

dust. I would like to hear if anybody would be willing to sell it to

 Subj : Magic for Relatives
.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to start a discusion here about performing Magic for non-ma-
gic Friends and relatives just because it plays a very important part
in every magicians live (both prof and amateur).
.
Let me explain: When I first started magic (and for many years to come
after that) my only audience where friends and relatives. These per-
sons saw me perform much more than the average layman does see magic
because they where on almost event where my performances where wanted
(family gatherings, parties, school parties...). Ofcourse they weren't
there all together (in fact they fall apart in some groups) but combi-
ned with the fact that they don't form a large group (such as fresh
laymen with every show), the only thing I could do was coming up with
something new every time (I didn't refuse shows then because I always
had something to try). It was exactly as Goshman stated in his book.
.
Later I realized that a lot of time is needed to polish and
perfect routines; this caused some trouble: I suddenly had only a few
routines I thought were realy good and in no-time these where fired on
the relatives group leaving me empty-handed for future. When on a paid
show (or the rare occasions I meet non magic friends that haven't seen
something) I only use the 'good' items. Today the gap between 'good'
routines and 'routines for relatives' has became very wide indeed,
because I spend most time perfecting and performing old things and
less time searching new things. As a result, 'routines for relatives'
are either very old things I don't do 'professionaly' or things just
invented or in the expirimental phase; neither very good developed!
.
Another thing is: Relatives and (non magic) collegues DON'T ACCEPT YOU
AS A MAGICIAN. I have the feeling that I can do prize winning acts or
other things that are extremely succesfull amongst laymen that just
don't impress them (or leaves them asking for the method!) because
I'm just one of there friends doing a magic puzzle for them. Some are
realy angry when you don't show it again over and over (so they can
find out the secret) or tell them how it's done. Because I don't want
troubles in the hierarchic structure (when performing for the boss,
he is still in charge) I try to avoid performing for friends and
relatives lately.
.
I think I can say a lot more about this, but this message is getting
a little long.. Is there anybody who feels the same, has something
good to say about the subject (I never saw anything in the books about
this), or want to tell how he handles this subject in practice? Please
leave it here on MAGIC!-NL.... See Ya, Arnoud!

think any is due. Please re-read my message again. (That's the
trouble with this kind of communication). You owe NO ONE an apology.
As I said in my message, I believe that it is possible for two minds
to conceive of the same effect independently of each other. BTW, if I
had any misgivings about the effect's origin, I wouldn't have printed
the thing in the first place. Please don't confuse me with those who
are almost anal retentive about crediting every little jot and tittle
of a trick. In most cases, that kind of crediting makes magic books
and effects a real trial to read. I want you to know that I appreciate
everything you've done for me and THE MAGIC MENU. I really do.

Re: DUKES DYEVERSION

In speaking with a friend who buys and sells magic
libraries, he mentioned that two complete xerox copies of the
Harbin Book had turned up & one of them had even been bound into
a "lookalike" book. They, honorable men that they are, haven't
offered either one of these to the magic book buying public. They
were surprised by this, but chose not to participate in the one
off rip off. I've been going through their trash for the past two
months, but guess they shredded them. Glad you found your book,
though.
Actually by designing an original act, doing the video,
props, etc giving them something to work their area with if you
could provide territories or limit the sale to one magi in each
town or 50 mile circle, etc. I think your franchise approach is
best though. Call it Jiffy Magic, An Act A Minit. Provide
costumes, backdrop, etc. Advertise in Money Makers Monthly, The
Franchise Opportunity Magazine. Then charge the franchise holders
a monthly fee for nat'l tv ads, etc.
Guess I said Charlie Randall just left. Excellent house
guest and not allergic to dogs or cats. Can talk about magic
books for hours on end and doesn't get sleepy til you do. I could
say more and probably will, but I'm trying to keep it down for
fear of blowing a fuse or friends.
He really liked tabman tables and will get one of the
next ones I make. He tried to give me money but I forced him to
pay me in books. What can I say, and contrary to what my dad
said, you can eat books if you microwave them on high for 75
minits and then make bookmeal from the ashes. Plus, I'm loosing
weight.
Down to 5 or 6 cigs a day now, but I just found a pack
gloria had stashed and am smoking three at a time till they're
gone. Will try to be quit by MAGIC! breakfast. Got a location for
it yet? as I'm coming in thus night and then right back out on
sat as I want to make Phil. Day of Magic same weekend then we
start the process of packing etc. If I'm around still by Balto
Convention I will help with MAGIC! related stuff for sure and
you're most certainly invited down to Spring Hill if we're still
here. Will be some others around then too I bet. Depends on how
fast farm goes. Gotta be prepared for anything.
Had a session in the studio yesterday and Charlie had
good time hanging out seeing a little recording magic. Too bad
the group basically s**ked, but this ain't NY, LA and it ain't
Nashville and it ain't home either. They booked me to overdub
steel on session (my studio, am only steel player allowed) and
couldn't understand how I could play three of their original
songs in fifteen minits after it had taken them all day to get
them down. Reason: I'd heard em all a hundred times before. Hey,
there's only 12 notes and 2 basic time sigs.
Magic is a much more complex art form and many more
ingredients go into performance and presentation. Musicians might
probably argue with this, but I'm convinced. Music is mostly
soul (technique and knowledge of instrument certainly help).
Magic is mostly knowledge of instrument and technique on base
level. Its when a magician can bring soul into his performance
that it then becomes something truly a wonder to behold. Music is
only part of the total presentation. For a music show to be
effective the visual must be added to make the presentation
complete. A great magician could probably convince the audience
they were hearing music anyway if he wanted. I hear it all the
time myself. Talk to you later. Glad to see you home again.

Re: MIKE CLOSE BOOKS

Michael Close's new book is called WORKERS NUMBER ONE. For those of
you who don't know, Mike is the head magician at Illusions, an
all-magic restaurant outside of Indianapolis. His book contains four
wonderfully commercial routines that Mike has honed and polished over
the years at Illusions. If you do restaurant or bar work, you really
should own a copy, if just for Mike's thinking. Every detail of each
trick is extremely well thought out. The point of this is that I have
two copies of Mike's book left over from a convention that THE MAGIC
MENU did last weekend. Rather then send them back to Mike (we sold
QUITE a few at the convention last week!), I'd like to offer these last
two to my MAGIC! friends at a reduced price, as Mike was kind enough to
let us have them cheaper, too. They're usually $20.00...we're selling
them for $15. I only have two so the first two messages gets them. It
really is a super book!

Been wanting to type you for several days since really
getting into "The Man Who Was Erdnase". I wish to thank you, Dr.
Whaley and belatedly Martin Gardner for going to all the trouble
to get this information into our hands. Most impressive is the
amount of information. Every thread is followed much to my
delight touching so many others besides the man who was Erdnase
that I'm sure to come away from my first read with a deeper
understanding of card magic and magic hustlers as a whole during
the first part of this century. What will the turn of the next
century bring? as we're entering another cyclic transition for
magic and the world at large.
I've never seen a first edition copy of the cloth bound
"Expert" but can't help but noticing the shade of green "The
Man..." is bound in. Can it be the same color? As ya'll unfold
the story (I'm about a third into it) I'm beginning to read
almost as much between the lines as on top of them. This book is
mucho fun, and I believe I'm getting to know the expert plus a
lot more. Well, you don't need me to tell you its good stuff.
Just wanted to say thanks from a reader and a friend.

Pete, here's an idea for you: You build a Del Ray type act with all
the work microprocessor controlled. The software is self-erasing.
Before each performance, the guy has to plug the modem of his table
into a phone line and download the software to make the thing work.
Same time as the software is loaded, his credit card is charged for the
performance royalty. All the guy has to do is act. Push button magic?
Yeah. Sure wouldn't want magic to go this way.

Re: SHAMANISM

But that is exactly my point. There _is_ an anthropological
relationship between tribal shamanism and Henny Youngman.
If you dislike most comedy magicians, I'll hardly disagree, not only
because such tastes are person, and also because I _also_ dislike the
vast majority of comedy magicians. However, I'll continue to dispute
your thesis that comedy and magic somehow cannot mix successfully.
In my last message on this I named some comedy magicians whose work
exemplifies such successful mixing. Your response rejects those names,
as if their artistic validity immediately re-defines them as something
other than comedy magicians. Semantic gaming. They _are_ comedy
magicians, and there are others I could add to that list.
Unquestionably, bad comedy magic is the refuge of lazy, sloppy
performers who think they'll be able to get by with a half-assed mix of
mediocre magic and mediocre comedy -- the result being double
mediocrity. But to reject the entire form for any reason other than
personal aesthetics is not a good idea.

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

The issue of women in magic is complex, but I think the most obvious
and primary reason there are so few women in western magic is that the
male-dominated magic subculture does nothing to make women feel
welcome, let alone supported or encouraged.
I know of quite a number of women who, if they signed on to this
BBS and saw the heading "Trick Chicks," would react about the same way
I would if I came upon the heading "Komedy Kikes."
As long as male magicians continue regarding female magicians as
fluff and/or bait, the involvement of women in conjuring will remain
limited.

Wow! I didn't know it was possible to get started in magic without
doing card tricks! There are a couple of effects using a force deck
that have been posted here but I have no idea what their message
numbers are. There has been a suggestion recently about combining all
of the effects that have been posted since Magic! started and making
them available. There are several books and booklets on the subject.
I haven't read any of them but they are in the Castle library. One
that I will occasionally do after doing some standard card routines
with a normal deck is to switch decks and have a card chosen out of the
force deck. Replace card and false shuffle and false cut retaining top
and bottom indifferent cards in place. Wrap deck in a piece of paper
and thrust a knife into the deck, slicing the paper away and lifting
the top part of the deck to show the selected card. I left out a lot
of presentation points and patter but you get the general idea.

You may be preaching to the choir, Pete. I'm throughly of the opinion
that the magic is in the PERFORMER, not in the cards or zig-zags or
whatever. Someone on here not long ago (but long enough ago for me to
forget exactly who to give credit to) said that the magician is an
actor playing a magician. Not bad! Of course, that "actor" has got to
have that magician in him/her or it won't work. Maybe the idea is --
anyone can do tricks, but only a magician (or magicienne) can do magic.

Matt Matsuyama is just getting started here on MAGIC! But he is in
Japan and can probably give us the exact counts. As to our culture, it
may depend on how you define magicians/magiciennes - as stage and
straight magic performers, for example, women have been in a minority
(My understanding is that the Castle has about 2,452 magician members
and 48 magicienne members), but on the other hand there are few male
tarrot and palm readers. I believe women are fairly represented in
Voodoo too. Maybe the idea of getting up on a stage and making doves
appear while issuing "comic" patter just doesn't appeal to many women?

Bark as you may I feel one big reason is that women get no support from
the male majority. As girls performing magic they are cute but when
they start getting serious it seems this macho magic trip comes over
the males, who hold court exclusive, and they are literally shunned,
not invited to participate and frankly looked down. What, not me, I was
just talking to a female magician and she said she has literally been
told that she can't make it in magic and the melindas are just tokens.
This of course is much more deeprooted than just guys who hand the gals
dove trays but I wonder how many women have just left their rings or
clubs because they "weren't one of the guys". How many Black Magician
I mean African American Female Magicians can you name? This is scary.

Re: TRICK CHICKS

I don't think it has much to do with lack of male suppport. I think as
many men who would discourage a woman because they consider magic
"macho," there are more who would _en_courage them for a variety of
right and wrong reasons, some philosophical, some hormonal...
As to us magicians being a "macho" bunch... huh? We're sort of
the opposite of football players and the like. There's always been a
effete, drawing-room element to all kinds of magic...
I'll buy a _public_ lack of acceptance for women magicians more
than I'll buy an intercraft one. Perhaps the macho guys in our
_audience_ don't like to be fooled by a lady? Perhaps women aren't
encouraged culturally to get the better of men? Perhaps the answer is
in the submissive role women play in Western culture? Or, to put that
a little more sophisticated, the ways in which women are allowed to be
dominant, or equal, to do not include fooling men...
Now _there_ I think we have an avenue worth exploring!

Re: TRICK CHICKS

Interesting point, that about tarot and palm readers. Sort of sheds
light on my answer to Dante Larsen's message. (SEE MSSG #7748.) I
suggested that in our culture men don't like women publically _fooling_
them. But that it's acceptable (barely) from a man...
But, as you point out, women _are_ allowed to be mystical. They
can explore, shed light, and act as conduits for magical energy and
information. (tarot, palm reading...) They can even wield power
(voodoo), when it is genuine. But they can't stand on a stage and
_pretend_. Because that's fooling men.
Men as a whole like women to be a lot of different things. But
they don't want them to fool them.
Whatcha think? I think we're zeroing in on an answer. Let's
explore why this _isn't_ so in Japan. I suspect it has less to do with
the Japanese finding deceitful women anymore acceptable, than it has to
do with how they view magic. (Or are women so submissive in Japan that
their displays of magic are not even a minor threat?) However, I know
less than nothing about Japan, the Japanese, let alone magic from that
region.

"trick chicks". As long as I can remember a female is not "invited" to

worked many times harder than the average male magician to get where
they are with respect. The old school is simply sexist. This will
change, but it will change with time. This is only an opinion, but it's
my opinion and I feel in any local "click" favorites are played and

To: Arnaud Van Delen

You are so right! Doing magic for relatives is always a problem! And
for the very reasons you mentioned. There may (but only MAY) be a
couple of things that you can do. First, use highly visual magic with
them - flashpaper can often convince them that you are a "real"
magician and not just the grown-up version of the little kid you used
to be. Second, don't let them dominate the show. Organize it like a
real audience - put a few quiet, appreciative relatives closest to you
and let your annoying brother-in-law (or whoever else in your family
makes rude comments) as far from you as possible. Third, don't let
them see the experimental stuff. If you have nothing new that you
really feel comfortable with, do nothing! Tell them you have a cold,
or the magical spirits union is on strike, or something. Here's
another thought - team up with a magical buddy or two - you perform for
HIS relatives and he performs for yours!

I have often wondered what happens when David Copperfield or Michael
Ammar or Max Maven goes to a family reunion. Can't you see them being
given the assignment of keeping the kiddies busy with "that magic stuff
that you do."

little truths --like women not being treated equally, still-- it doesn't make
them go away. Instead of taking exception to phrases like "trick

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

As the originator of the "Trick Chicks" heading, I take offense with
your comparison of it to "Komedy Kikes." Not only is this obviously
lacking in any sense of humor, your statement is down right
inflamatory. The phrase "chicks" is obviously toungue and cheek.
"Chick" as a word has referred to women, generally affectionately,
for decades. Used in this forum it has a humorous quality that I am
certain you detected.
"Kike"," however, is a word of hate. As "Goldstein" is a
Jewish name, as "Katz" is, I assume you have been on the other of this
word.
So why is "Trick Chicks" acceptable and "Komedy Kikes" is not?
Because, frankly, no one has practiced genocide against "Chicks" in the
last century. And anyone who found "Trick Chicks" as offensive as
"Komedy Kikes" should be sent straight to some kind of orientation
program for the 1990's.
I am a liberal politically. The sensivity you display to the
term "trick chicks" is a left-ist one. But it is not from the wing of
leftist political thought that protects speech and political liberties,
By making your egregious comparison, you seek to halt dialogue, to
allow certain sacred cows to only be discussed with dread seriousness,
to examine the politcal correctness of your own and my speech, then to
swat me down with racist comparisons if I don't meet the test.
Perhaps you think I am reactiing strongly. But I think your
statement was clearly comparing my words ("Trick Chicks,"l lest you
forget) to a clearly racist phrase ("Kike," lest we forget that). This
is wrong-headed, intellectually dishonest, and a unfair and unfounded
accusation.
     By the way.... Loved "Focus"!

agony all over again! Because you have to quit, some time.
--Also, remember that you will feel the positive effects in a
matter of a few days or weeks. You'll need less sleep. You'll have
more energy. Your _face_ will look better. And your hands. Food will
taste better. Get Johnson&Johnson dental picks. They are wooden
toothpicks that come in a pack, like cigs. I carried them around,
ripped one out of the pack when I wanted something in my mouth.
Above all, do not succumb! It gets better! This s**t will kill
you!

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

Disagree if you choose, but my statement has no intellectual
dishonesty. It's a red herring to bring up the topic of censorship; I
did not suggest for a moment that you not be allowed to use the term
"trick chicks," but rather that the term was offensive. Debating the
comparative degree of societal persecution of women vs. that suffered
by Jews is pointless. It's a question of degree (like being a little
bit pregnant). Discrimination is discrimination. _You_ may think that
the term "chick" is affectionate; these days, few women do.

Re: SHAMANISM

If there is a relationship between tribal shamanism and Henny Youngman,
Max, I'm afraid you are going to have to take me by the hand and lead
me through it. I'm perfectly comfortable with the threads that connect
magic and religion (by the way, if you haven't read Marion Zimmer
Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon," you might find it mildly interesting),
the connections between cathedrals and movie palaces, and even the
relationships between cargo cults and corporate data centers, but
shamanism and Henny Youngman?
As to "semantic gaming," I've always been rather anti-semantic myself.
I think that we are in agreement that there are good performers who can
make comedy and magic live well together, and that the majority are
just "lazy" and "sloppy" and use bad comedy to cover bad magic, hoping
that somehow the two together will make the audience respond. On a
"personal aesthetics" level I even enjoy good "comedy magic." I'm just
not sure it is "magic." I think it is something else.
Maybe it is something else I'm searching for here - maybe I really
don't know what "magic" is. Do you?

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

Listen, sorry if I came on a little strong. Offensive-ness is in the
eye of the beholder, I agree. All I can say is that if we polled a
random group of educated Americans, you'd find few who'd find "trick
chicks" as offensive any any phrase using the word "Kike."
We live in an over-sensitized world, where these sensitivities can
obscure truths. Where an Immoral Minorty can hold tryany over a
nation, deciding what ideas and words are wrong and offensive. I am
not comparing you to Falwell, but your comparison was a censorious act
(word?). Discrimination is discrimination, I agree. To bring up the
matter of why women aren't big in magic is not discriminatory, it is
concerned. And my discussions on the matter were sober and not glib.
You can laugh at the word "chick." I can, my girlfriend can. And we
can do it without guilt. This is not true of "Kike," and I suspect you
know that.
Your reaction was not intellectually dishonest, I agree. It wasas
oversensitive. Attack the bigots and sexists who deserve it, not the
thinking-people who choose to spice their discussions with a little
humor.
By being as upset at these words as we are, we give them too much
power. I submit, though, that horrible, violent things have been done
alongside the word "Kike," and it is unfair to put me or my words in
the same ballpark.
Obviously, the Dice-man will not be welcome on MAGIC!

Uh, oh! Here comes a can of worms! Want my personal view? One that

isn't is possible that the "feminist revolution" has very little to do
with "equality?" That while its roots may have had something to do
with that issue, that, over time, it simply became the platform for a
litany of overage tomboyism? That whatever men did must, perforce, be
better than whatever women did?
Before some of you jump on my case, I'm going to suggest that we try
our best to confine this topic to one with a magical relationship.
And, in exchange, I will call up one of my best feminist friends, who
also dabbles in magic, and see if we can't get her to join us here.

You must come from a very unusual family, Max. I used to say that when

Others have told me that that is unusual - it only takes them two days

I am sorry -- but if you don't see the parallels between racism and
sexism, it is you who are not living in the 90s. You might take a poll
of the women you know, and find out what they think of men who refer to
them as "chicks"; you may be surprised. You might also take a look at
the statistics regarding women's pay, promotion, etc. -- and then
wonder if, were you in their position, you would find demeaning terms
humorous. Make no mistake about it; "chick" is a demeaning term, and
no woman with an ounce of self-respect will put up with it.

Wise words, Dante -- and depressing. It's stuff like this that makes
the issue of "trick chicks" important. Magic has always been somewhat
conservative/reactionary -- not surprising for an art that for the most
part stopped dead in 1935 -- and it would be nice to drag it kicking

I wish I had something to contribute to the women in

I'm concerned, people are people. Men like men (mostly) for
different reasons than men like women (and vice versa). Joe
Giandalone (NY piano tuner) says we never outgrow the "boy-girl
war".
Being married to a top female athelete I've seen first
hand the bitter discrimination the "good ole boy network" has
used to put them "in their place" (Gloria only woman in history
to make all male military olympic 300 meter team and then got a
gold medal with much harrassment by mostly scandanavian males).
I'm large macho biker looking individual and kept most of it away
from her. When asked by a macho colonel from Norway how I liked
shooting, I said" Not bad for a girls sport" and completely blew
his cover (he lost match was so pi**ed).
Until we become robot clones, I still believe we are free
to choose our friends and associates. It is our choice to make,
remembering that a person is judged by the company they keep.
"Wise" old farmer down road asked me why I cared what others

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

Let me touch on one word -- IRONY. It is the key to much humor, as
well as Penn & Teller's act, and it has been missing from many
magicians for years, as well as this discussion on my phrase "trick
chicks"
In addition, if you find yourself spending time with women who find
the word "chick" as offensive as the word "kike," I suggest you
re-examine them closely, as they are bores and quite possibly shrews
and should not be tolerated unless they are very attractive, or rich,
or both.
For those of you who are unsure of how to take that statment, see
line one of this message. I am referring to the word that begins with
"I" and ends with "Y"," but is not "idiocy," which is the level that
these knee-jerk reactions about the word chick has sunk to.
If you read my message with anything more than the most cursory
attention, you will find me _agreeing_ with you. I am just not so
terrified by the possible rejection of women to have lose my sense of
humor about the whole thing!
And the next time _anyone_ suggests "chick" is as offensive as
"Kike" and its companion word "nigger," I have a few bars to take you
to where you are free to explore the reaction to publically shouting
each.

I think Tricky Chickies would be better, tho.

Lots of subjects and for budget reasons here is a "one message
fits all".

Magic for relatives. Hmmmm. I guess my mother said the part she
didn't like most was my always asking someone to take a card
while they were sitting on the toilet.

Hey, when you have a captive audience take advantage!

Reminds me of Ben Martin's business card, with the line: "No
Shi**y Tricks!"

I wish I knew the answer to the lack of female magical
performers. Altho I have noted that almost ALL of the ones that
have gone through with it, and gotten on stage (that I have seen)
Celeste Evans, Dell O'Dell, Aniko, Jade, Melinda, The Good Gypsy,
Judy Carter, several Japanese, who's names escape me, Sara
Kabagujina -- ARE ALL EXCELLENT **PERFORMERS**. Maybe their
judgement is better than the average Dorky Male Magician and if
they aren't good enough, or ready, they don't leap onstage and
make fools of themselves???

As a "hirer" of acts, I am ALWAYS on the lookout for minority
acts, (women especially) that are available. Wish there were
more.

Dante mentioned a real lack of African American Females. Based on
their ability to PERFORM in the music field and if that energy
was applied to a variety act, Magic being one, such a lady would
be in great demand. Interestingly, an entry in the Desert Seminar
came from a Chinese Girl (Jade was already entered) that was
totally different than Jade in style, content, etc. She was short
on content but my guess is she will soon be a factor if she
doesn't give up.

When you quit smoking, "You will look better, feel better, food
will taste better" --- HEY I HAVE NEVER SMOKED WHAT DO I DO TO
ACCOMPLISH THE ABOVE?

Tabbooo -- I would have loved to see the look on the Norweigian
Colonel's mug! Keep tightening the bass strings...

1951 Laptop - David -- 'twas a Smith Corona Portable, powered by
10 fingers. Hope to bring a reel to L.V. And will have GIFT for a
number of MAGIC! members there (not visitors unless I have
sufficient supply).

The Goshman Phallic Sponge really didn't play that well here, but
the biggest market was Japanese men.

Are you suggesting that we go back to the days of the mystic magician
in conical hat and wizard robes???
A very great number of the better working magicians use comedy in their
acts....including Michael Ammar, Johnny Thompson. Is Chuck Fayne a
magician or a comedian? How about Carl Ballentine? Jeff Hobson? Terry
Seabrooke? Billy McComb? Tom Ogden? Doesn't Johnny "Ace" Palmer use
comedy in his act???
Sure, there are some lazy magi who rely on comedy to prop up an act
deficient in magic. So what? Do you condemn an entire school of magic
for it? There are a lot of lazy magi who rely on DOVES to prop up a
magically deficient act. Same with FIRE! Same with ridiculously
throbbing MUSIC and/or STROBE LIGHTS!!! (Anybody see "Angelica" last
week at the Castle?)
Is someone here gonna tell PETE BIRO to stop thinking comedically? I
hope not!

Censorship? I'll defend your right to use obnoxious terminology at
any and every occasion. However, I won't defend the terminology itself.
Perhaps I should reiterate my original point: the problem with the
heading "trick chicks" is that if a woman were to sign onto this BBS
(or for that matter a man with any degree of political sensitivity),
that person would be uncomfortable and repelled by the heading.
This is not a matter of "over-sensitivity" but rather just plain
sensitivity combined with common sense.
In no way am I disagreeing with you on the interest you show in
exploring the question of women's participation in magic. Indeed, the
world of magic is rampant with sexism, racism and homophobia, and it is
an issue few have addressed. (In fact, I have raised such issues in
magic journals in the past, and can tell you that most magicians don't
particularly care about the issue.)

The fact that, in most bars, "chick" would not raise an eyebrow only
indicates that, in most bars, there are few women in a position to

Your protestation reminds me of a situation a couple of years ago.
A writer in a magic magazine described the "gag" of dropping a Chinese
coin on the table and commenting, "You can tell it's Chinese -- listen

Thanks for the greetings and greeting from America's heartland,
Kalamazoo Michigan. This area, over thru Holland Michigan, has a great
Dutch tradition and a large percentage of people with Dutch ancestory.
My business gets me to Europe several times a year and frequently I fly

real magic....good Dutch beer or something.

I wrote to you in message 7812, I found the Genii I mentioned. Here are
some of the illusions: A close-up effect, where a crumpled piece of
paper dances on a selected person's palm, another paper effect where
the paper is shaped into a flower. It floats up and down, then changes
to a real flower! Those are just a few, and I don't garantee they will
be in there, but most of david's show winds up on his specials sooner

Personally I would say don't worry about getting motivated to do card
tricks again. Magic should be fun, not a chore! If you are more
interested in coins or paper or dice or whatever, do that instead.
However, if you hang around the Castle enough you are bound to see some
really great card effects which just might motivate you to learn them.
Why do you like to do magic in the first place? Do you like to
entertain others with a trick or two or an entire routine?

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

I made it back across the manacing San Francisco Bay Bridge. I
always remembered, as a child, the FEAR crossing that structure
as you could look down through the "street" surface and see the
water -- and of course I always thought I would fall through.

So, beat the odds again. Had great Dim Sum with Fanny Tjin AKA
Jade. Spoke a little about her start. Said she was very, very shy
and wound up, after coming over from Taiwan, working in a shop in
San Francisco that sold novelties and magic tricks. She learned
to do some of the tricks to "sell them" and enjoyed
demonstrating, finding the better your performance the better
chance to make a sale.

An acquaintance was a street performing Mime and she thought if
she put on the white face and took some tricks out she might make
some money as a street performer. She did. Only trouble, hiding
behind the white face didn't hide her eyes, and people would say,
"aren't you the girl that works in the magic store up the
street!"

She didn't have much opinion of why or why not more lady
performers, but does really believe it is the performance not the
tricks, citing the example of her act using established standard
effects taking her to the Gold Medal at the IBM last Summer and
recent standing ovations at other conventions, like the Columbus
Magi Fest.

Spoke with a few other friends (ladies) and asked them what they
thought of the phrase, "TRICK CHICKS" and one said, "how about
DECEPTIVE DICKS, think guys would like that?"

So, I guess 40 years ago guys called gals chicks -- but probably
not to their faces. Other terms, like Dames, Dolls, Twists,
Broads, etc. go over today like the proverbial lead balloon.

One guy said, "have you ever thought of booking a whole show of
GAY DECIEVERS?" Told him, "I already have, but I didn't tell
anybody!"

It goes on and on... (I still like Komical Kikes, Max -- any of
the Borscht Belt guys ever use that one?)

You know I firmly believe people take themselves too seriously.
One group gets all bent out of shape if someone does a racial
gag, but if you lose ANY sense of humor it's too late for you...
Arsenio was accused of Gay Bashing and he put it well saying,
"Hey I'm a comedian, I do funny stuff an everybody, blacks,
whites, gays, rednecks...."

So in closing, I leave you with this one important thought!

(Stole that line from Falkenstien)

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

I am afraid I didn't make my point -- so let me try once more; it isn't
whether YOU consider the term chick offensive, or I do, but what the
woman thinks of it. A person may not understand why a black might not
like being called a "darkie" --- but that is irrelevant, if in fact it
does offend them.
One other thing: I see this kind of sexism all the time in magic,
particularly when a male performer is working for women. In the
Closeup room of the Castle a few years ago I saw a man who is supposed
to be a hot trade show performer doing lines to the two women that
should have got him slugged. One of the reasons women may not like
magic or magicians is this notion that sexism is somehow less important
than racism -- and that isn't good for magic. Cruel humor is one
thing; tasteless humor another; but humor based on bigotry is only
funny to bigots. I don't mean to come on strong, but it is impossible
to overstate the importance of this. Andrew Dice Clay is looked down
on by most people past the age of puberty; let's not encourage his
equivalents in magic by pretending sexism doesn't matter.

--- 'Where do you buy your tricks?'
--- 'Do you know this one?....'
--- 'I liked the first one but the other was quite obvious (now

The reasons are ofcourse obvious. Indeed better to refuse now

after some time: 'Do you still have magic as a hobby?'....

The L.A. Times TV guide lists Joseph Gabriel as appearing tonight on
the "Tonight Show." Don't know if this is a repeat but either way
should be a good bit of magic since Joseph is excellent...

Re: MIKE CLOSE BOOK

OK...here's the scoop. I have one copy of Mike Close's book "WORKERS
NUMBER ONE" left. It contains routines that Mike has finely honed
over the years at Illusions, the magic restaurant in Indianapolis,
including a killer version of Card Warp and Mike's movable hole
routine which is done with your business card (which is then left in
the hands of the spectator). Good, commercial, hard-hitting material.
It goes for $20 in the shops...I have one left at $15. We sold quite
a few of them at the New England Magicians Convention. Let me know.
This copy goes back to Mike on Friday if no one wants it.

Re: REELS

I have heard, though I have no personal experience, that guys use a
reel that was originally meant to hold keys. I have seen various
maintence men with them on their belts. A bunch of keys hang from it,
the guy pulls it out, unlocks something, lets go of it, and the keys
fly back to the base of the reel. Don't know if they come with a lock
or not. John Kennedy advertises a reel with a 40 foot pull!!! This may
be too much for what you want. George Kirkendall of Columbus, Ohio
makes a variety of reels. I've had one or two of his and they work
well, but they are too small for what you want. You might write him and
see what he has to offer. Later.

Re: FORCE DECKS

I think that's great that you are putting more emphasis on a routine
than on knowing a bunch of tricks. If you are reading books on show-
manship, etc. that will help even more. You probably already kn ow
enough effects to put together a nice routine right now. Arrange them
so their is a logical sequence and you will be able to flow from one to
the next. I found that when I just knew a "bunch of tricks" I wanted
to show them all to everyone and I would frequently forget many of them
as they came tumbling out one after another, so to speak. You might
have a couple of different routines depending on your situation.
Sometimes you will be seated at a table and sometimes you will be
standing up without a flat surfaceE to work on. Anyway, routining
helped me and I'm sure you'll benefit fr m it also.

try the dealers in the area: Hollywood Magic, etc. Or Abbott's (you

to make, and to my mind, the best for producing the little critter. If

 Subj : magic for relatives

-------------------------------------------------------------------
My solution is quite simple. I do not perform for my relatives. The
only situation I have sometimes done magic for my relatives is when
someone came over who lives very far away, who had never seen any-
thing of me before. Then in such a case I would do my regular stuff.
The rest of the family may have seen it before(although for all of
them it is so long ago, they will not remember it very well) but they
still enjoy it, also to see how this distant memeber of the family
reacts to it. Once it is known you do not perform for your relatives
there is no problem left. I perform so seldom for them, may be once
in 5 years or so, that also the problem of them knowing the effects
is not there. I just do my professional routines for them. Still i
must admit that even in this situation I do not like performing for
them, because the reactions tend to be different than what I get from
strangers.
Kind regards, Tommy..

Subj : Description of Layman acts

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello All!
.
We (magicians) always meet each other on conventions, on club
meetings, and on these occasions always try to baffle eachother
with another unbelievable move, another impractical routine, etc....
I often wonder what do you do when you perform for a layman
audience??
I believe on those occasions you play it the 'safe' way, so sure
fire effects with a maximum of response. This are routines you have
built out throughout the years; the parlando has grown, the presen-
tation has become much more personalized.
I also think especially those effect we never perform for eachother
since they are usually not that special for magicians. However, I
think, specially since they have become so personalized, they are
interested for fellow magicians to be watched.
.
So I would like to suggest to describe your own layman act; what do
you do when you perform for, say, Mr. President??? I will start off
by describing some effects I usually do. Also when you watched
another fellow magician, please also describe what he did.
.
I think those descriptions, can be interesting to read, as well as
very valuable for yourself while working on your own act.
.
Arnaud

Re: KAMAAR

Just wondering if anyone caught last night's Lettermen show and the
latest of a seemingly incessant number of appearances by Kamaar the
Discount Magician. It's too bad that this guy has such little respecty
for himself and the art of magic to allow himself to look like such an
inept amateur on national TV on a regular basis. I mean, he can't be
stupid enough not to know that he looks like an ass. What's even more
ironic is that he walks around magic conventions like he owns them,
apparently oblivious to the low regard in which he is held by his
fellow performers. It's sad, really. Everytime he's on, it looks like
he went to Tannen's, bought out everything they have by MAK Magic, took
a glance at the instructions while he was in the green room, and then
performed it. Two-bit, gaudy, proppy-looking props, no presentation
and no style...the perfect foil for Letterman. Oh well...

Re: DESCRIPTIONS OF LAYMAN AC

Lately, for laypersons, I have been doing "proppy" magic. Not
necessarily gaffed self-working props, but simply things that are
highly visual and entertaining. I like to do a routine that has a
fairly consistent "story line." They seem to enjoy routines that are
structured like that.

For example: I have a Clarence Miller (Chalet Magic Co.) "Impossible
Penetration." This is a very nice wooden guillotine "finger chopper"
in which the finger ends up INSIDE the wooden blade (the finger is in
a hole and the "blade," a piece of wood approximately 7 cm. x 10 cm.).
I dress it up with a routine - first I mention how, although I love
close-up magic, it always seems that the stage magicians get all the
"thunder" because they do "death defying" acts. And how I have decided
to do a "close-up death defying act." Then I bring the guillotine up
onto the table, wrapped in a silk. Meanwhile, I start a tape recorder,
playing Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. I expose the guillotine.
In front of the guillotine I place a small basket. I then demonstrate
the guillotine, using a toy doll (the doll was prepared by removing the
head and placing magnets inside so that it holds on pretty well until
I chop it. The magnets are painted red and when the head is "severed"
I usually get a reaction). Then I say that we will try it again, this
time with someone's finger (I usually get a laugh here. When possible,
I try to have a lady with nice long, red fingernails seated next to me)
pointing out that I didn't say that -I- would be the one defying death.
We edge her nervous finger into the guillotine and I produce a toy
ambulance with a siren and flashing lights that races across the table
and stops near the guillotine. I tell her to be very careful NOT to
remove her finger, no matter what (this is necessary so that I can show
the penentration - if she removes her finger too soon people don't get
to see that). Then when all is ready, I do the chop and the
revelation. Proppy. (By the way, I am after a nice looking visual
fingernail in this - not just another female victim. I suppose that if
Teller was there, I could use his red fingernail just as well).

An audience that is there to be entertained really seems to like that
whole long effect. I suspect that a magician audience, more interested
in technical effects, would prefer a card trick in which I did a double
lift from inside a Faro shuffle.

Re: MAGIC! AND YOU

The bid stands at one hundred fifty dollars for the
andframed Berg/Bamberg check. Auction will close next Wednesday
week (Ga talk). Much discussion offline about who the mystery
donor is and every guess has been wrong so far. I won't tell even
if they guess it but maybe a good cold reader or Max Maven could
tell if I was lying. I haven't had to lie so far as no one has
guessed it.
This is very nice and is worth more but I hope the
current high bidder walks away with the prize as his connection
to both parties is legitimate and he wishes a rememberance. And
there's nothing like cash or a check to remember someone by plus
MAGIC! gets to pay the phone bills another month without the
sysop having to dig in (he would forever I'm sure by now as he
has proven himself ten times over) plus I hear that one of the
big hard drives is making funny noises too. It is nice to know
that all this stuff is being saved by someone with more than
ounce of sense for now and future access.
Welcome to new voices on MAGIC! and mucho gratitude to
the long term cases who've been here from the beginning
especially those who are professionals in the field and have
garnered more than their share of knowledge and special
understanding that comes only by long term exposure to fire and
to the super dedicated amateurs who have made such an impact on,
now MAGIC! and magic as a whole for years/decades.

Audience would def be entertained as would anybody who enjoys comedy
psycho drama. The part with the ambulance is the touch that puts it in

I am quite sure, however, that Kamaar doesn't see it that way. He
probably really thinks he doing a "real" magic act. It would be
interesting to see where else he works (other than local Rotary Club

Re: CANNONBALLISM

The idea is to get one of these human cannonball rigs (no
net) and actually shoot the "human cannonball" a coupla hundred
feet. The human cannonball wears a parachute and you play it up
big. Shoot almost straight up. But we will use a dummy in the
cannon which gets fired up and angled toward a circle painted on
the ground where the paraball rider is to land after successfully
opening parachute. Dummy goes sailing end over end real crazy
looking straight up. The chute of course doesn't open and hits
ground and dust flys up, etc. Helpers run out and do the bump in
the night or hangman and Cannonballman gets up, dusts himself
off and rides away on the back of a motorcycle being driven by a
girl in a gorilla suit.
Play it for laughs at County Fairs and shopping center
openings and stuff would be a lot of fun. What job do I want?
Well heckle, as long as I don't have to get shot out of the
cannon I'll be:
                         CANNONBALLMAN

Could bring along Ben Robinson to do the bullet catch on
rotation. Nah, Cannonballman can do it. We'll switch in a dummy
and actually shoot it. The dummy's head is a mellon and explodes.
Shoot it with a 12 ga. riot gun using ball bearings having a
special bullet trap built around the base of the cannon. Only
this time when Cannonballman gets up its Playboy Bunny who is
also at fair. She releases long hair from leather aviator cap and
goggles which Cman donned moments before. She is wearing universal
orange coveralls and sneakers. Cman is now the person firing the
riot gun wearing shooting sports clothing and a ball cap and ear
protection, etc.
                         On 2nd thought,
Think I'll just stick to the cannon.
                            your pal,
                      the human cannonball.

Re: KAMAAR

Certainly not trying to infer, imply nor draw comparative
analysis, but am just wondering how you feel about guys in magic
and entertainment like The Amazing Mr. Ballantine, etc. I somehow
can't see this guy Kamaar (wonder why it's so close to Ammar and
K-Mart?) taking himself that seriously unless the ranking isn't a
put on. In your field I wouldn't think that he would have that
much of a negative impact since you are able to get close to your
audience and they can see you are OK and not some hayseed
cornball like me.
How are things coming for the new logo for Magic Menu? I
don't see how you can afford to send it out in that nice envelope
and 1st class too, but its appreciated that it doesn't arrive
semi-mutilated as Genii has a coupla times (can hardly wait for
the new James Issue to arrive). Have you ever considered doing

sorta grey though, undyed I guess. Could it be "Duke's" has a
