Re: DESCRIPTIONS OF LAYMAN AC

I have a whole line of patter I deliver to make sure the "victims"
finger stays in the guillotine. I deliver it as an "aside," in a
semi-sotto voice: "Remember, whatever you do, don't take your finger
out until I tell you to. Even if you think we're finished, don't take
your finger out." In addition to leaving their finger in place, they
are totally spooked!
Of course you can use it ANYTIME, ANYPLACE. Even right in front of me!
Heck, if you want, I'll even paint a nail for you!

Re: DESCRIPTIONS OF LAYMAN AC

Actually, I wondered why you were talking to yourself too, Tabman. But
that's OK - the whole message about the guillotine was supposed to go
to ARNAUD VANREITSCHOTEN and I sent it to Pete Biro!
The ambulance is from a toy store. It is made by Remco and comes in a
blister pac. Originally I couldn't find an ambulance (I'm pretty sure
they make one) so I got something that looked like one and painted it
white. There are two red LED's on the top and when you press on the
hood they flash and a siren goes off for about 4.5 seconds - just long
enough.
The toy I decapitate is "Robotech Master's Enemy" from the Matchbox
Robotech series. I use it because...well, because it was on sale for
cheap and its head was the right size.
I'm not sure who's version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue I finally
decided to use.

Re:

David Lichtman have kindly assisted me in joining MAGIC! Thanks a lot,
Dave.
This is my first message here.

I am a founder and a co-sysop of the Magic Forum in Japan, which has
been
cooperated with Y. Fujiwara, the other founder and co-sysop. Just very
[line noise in original message from Japan] onal sub-sysops of the
forum.

The Magic Forum is the oldest magic BBS currently. More precisely
saying,
the magic section in BPForum in CompuServe was the first one.

I have looked through a part of recent messages of MAGIC! Although I
still
don't know the entire activity, I would like to leave my first
impression
about MAGIC!

MAGIC! seems the most active BBS as long as I compare the number of
messages
posted every day. I can hardly imagine how the frequent access members
manage
-their time to respond so quickly. I think the host system is simple
enough for
new comers to get used to, however the principal reason for this
successful
BBS is based on the continious inputs of informative comments and
advices by
the core members.

Frankly saying, there are two difficulties for us to become active
members
for MAGIC! To begin with, there are too many messages posted everyday
on
MAGIC! to scan them through. Because English is not our native
language, we
have to consult dictionary and spend much time to understand the
contents
even if we don't response them.

Secondly, communication cost is skyhigh. We are charged 51 yen (equal
to
$0.40) for every 6-second connection. So if I connect 3 minutes for
each
access we are charged about $12.00 for it.

On the contrary we can access CompuServe magic section with much
reasonable
cost, because NIF, who operates NIFTY-Serve, provide us its private
line
linked with CompuServe. This gateway connection service charges us
40-70 yen
per 1-minute use (roughly $1.00-$2.00 per 3-minute). This doesn't
include
CompuServe access charge and other additional domestic charges for
connecting
to NIF's private line. However, joining the magic section is still
reasonable
even if we are charged these costs.
Messages on CompuServe magic section are less-frequently posted than
MAGIC!,
however, we feel the section is much favourable than MAGIC! due to our
difficulty on language.

You can reach our Magic Forum through CompuServe gateway service (GO
NIFTY)
with some reasonable cost ($35.00 per an hour) i.e. $1.75 per 3
minutes.

So we would tend to join Magic! and CompuServe(magic section) in
different
ways as follows.

1. CompuServe system is very useful for FACS mailing which could be
delivered
to many magicians and magic shops widely. (MAGIC! doesn't serve this
   function, I suppose)

2. For Japanese magicians, It seems much easier to participate
CompuServe
magic section. (This would not be true for American magicians)

3. As for electronic mailing, MAGIC! seems much useful than CompuServe
because the number of MAGIC! participants is likely larger than the
CompuServe section and quick resp/nze would be expected with
frequently
   access members.

Please forgive me to access MAGIC! not so frequently. Maybe I could
access
here once a week.

Re: INFORMAL MAGIC! LUNCHEON

WOW! What an experience! A great informal MAGIC! luncheon today
at the Magic Castle. Eight of our members, four from L.A.
(Marvin Stern, Doug Larson, Gregg McKay, and your's truly), four
from Houston (David Luther, Kent Cummins, Michael Ammar and Hanna
Ammar), spent a large part of the afternoon eating Castle chile
(OK, the wiser heads ate salads and stuff) and discussing magic
and MAGIC! (T A Waters and Dante Larsen made cameo appearances).
It was impossible to keep up with all of the conversations, so I
hope a few of the other attendees will add to this report, but the
topics ranged from card tricks through the business cycle of a
full-time magician to magic in the Soviet Union. It is really
great to watch MAGIC! members meet each other for the first time
and know each other. I can hardly wait for the Desert Magic
get-together!

Re: JUGGLING CARDS

About ten minutes before I left for the Castle, the postman
delivered a package from Howie Schwarzman. In it was Lubor
Fiedler's Juggling Cards, as described in HOWIE-5.TXT. This thing
is really fun! Effectively, it allows you to take a deck of
single cards and spread them lengthwise in a sort of ladder
formation. You can spread them across an empty space, hold 'em
from the top and they will all hang together, or even make them
into a hat! Then you can form a deck again and shuffle them! The
gaff is a little too obvious to leave 'em lying around, but the
effect, particularly in a parlour or stage setting, is mind
boggling. I did a bit with them close-up at the table at the
MAGIC! luncheon and, until I deliberately revealed the impossible
nature of what I was doing, I had a few people surprised. I was
sitting and shuffling the deck when I claimed that I could
"balance" a card. Working across, I "laddered" only three
cards so I had one in my left hand, the balance of the deck in my
right, and one sorta hanging in between. A few heads started to
fry when I showed that I could do it with two cards in between,
then three. Of course, as soon as I did it with five, six, and
seven everyone knew there had to be a serious problem with the
deck. Fun!

And the cards are BEAUTIFUL. U.S. Playing cards doesn't make
decks this nice. Theoretically I think you could transfer the
gaff to a Bicycle deck, but I'm not going to. Instead, I'd like
to ask, does anyone here or on MAGIC-NL know where I could get a
blue backed deck of Ferd, Piatnic & Sohne cards from Wein,
Austria? They are about 58 mm x 88 mm, just slightly wider than
our U.S. "bridge" size.

Re: READING MESSAGES

Thanks to the articles about MAGIC! that appeared in several
publications, we have a lot of new users. Here is a tip on how to
read messages quickly and easily.

From the Main Menu:

Type R;* and press That's the letter R followed by a
the ENTER key. semi-colon (;) followed by an
                             asterisk (*). Then press the
                             ENTER key. You will immediately
see the first new message after the last message you read the
last time you were on MAGIC! After each message you will be
presented with a menu. You can use this menu to Reply to a
message. If you just want to go on to the next message,
just press the ENTER key. Messages will be presented in
SUBJECT order. That means that you will see all of the messages
that have the same subject, followed by all of the messages on
the next subject, etc.

There are several other ways to read and locate messages on MAGIC!
Since most members tend to use an interactive mode in which they
read and reply to messages we tend to stress R;* as the best way
to do this. But here are some alternatives:

From the Main Menu:

R;nnn (Where nnn represents an individual message number)
Allows you to read and reply to one message. After
reading that one message a prompt will appear that allows you to insert
another number to read. This is NOT usually recommended since you miss
all of the messages in between the ones you read and, unless you go
back and read them, you will not see them. Your message pointer, the
thing that keeps track of the last message you read, will be updated
when you log off.

R;nnn+ (Where nnn represents an individual message number)
Allows you to read and reply to all messages, in
subject order, starting from the message number you have entered
(note that there is a plus sign [+] following the message number.
This is useful when you want to go back to a certain number to begin
reading or if you haven't been on for a while and want to skip a lot
of messages that are "new" but that you haven't got the opportunity
to read. Once again, your message pointer will be updated to the
last message you read, so, if you don't keep track you will loose
the opportunity to read previous messages.

RC;* RC stands for Read Continuous. This is useful for
or RC;nnn+ "downloading" the current messages into a file for
printing or examining later. The messages will
appear in NUMERICAL order, but you will NOT be offered an opportunity
to reply. Messages will just keep scrolling into your system and you
will need to use a "capture buffer" to retain them. RC;* will start
from the first new message, RC;nnn+ will start from the message number
you have entered. While this is a way to "grab" messages quickly to
read off-line, it tends to discourage replies and often turns the user
into a reader rather than a participant. Your message pointer will be
updated.

Along with these read options, there are some ways to look for
messages. All of them are generally followed with the number of the
message you wish to start at and a plus sign [+].

Q;nnn+ Quick Scan will display the subjects of messages
                  in numerical order.

S;nnn+ Scan will display the "message headers," the time

   Q?;nnn+ The R, Q, or S command, followed by a question mark
S?;nnn+ [?] will allow you to search for a keyword or name
R?;nnn+ in the message header. Since Q only displays the
subject, I believe it will only search for keywords
in the subject, while the others will also allow
a search for the name of the person it is from or
                  to.

Hope that these "advanced features" allow you to tailor your use of
MAGIC! to the way you would like it.

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

The original message about women in magic and why more women are not
magicians is an interesting one I think and one that should be explored
without rancor if possible. The following are my ideas and
observations. The observations I leave with you as observed fact and
I do not pretend to know why this is so nor do I pretend that my
experience is universal.

1. In order to do anything (Magic included) must enjoy it. If we do
not enjoy it or do not accept the basic tenants of the activity we will
not do it.

2. In performing, especially close up, I find my hardest audience are
women. If there is someone who will reach out and grab at the cards
etc. it will be a woman about 75% of the time. Men seem much more
willing to suspend belief and enjoy what is going on where women seem
to view Magic more as a puzzle to be solved. These are trends, not
absolutes, think of it more as two normal curves with the peaks offset.

3. If you accept 1&2 it follows that the pool of available persons who
would become magicians is larger for men and the likelyhood would be
that more men would be involved.

Again I stress that this is empirical observation, not scientifically
verified fact and I have no idea why this should be. I am an engineer
by training, not a psychologist. I do think however that it may help
explain why there are more men than women magicians.

Re: MAGIC! #15

The fifteenth set of MAGIC! messages - #7000 (Feb. 15, 1991) to
#7499 (March 1, 1991) - has been transfered to a downloadable
file. The file is named MAGIC-15.TXT. This means that you can
now go to the file area, download this file, and read the fif-
teenth volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to
use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-15.ZIP
and is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

This volume includes a number of good effects and tips on
handling. Among the effects: "Floating Coin to Wine Bottle" by
Steve Kucera, "Himber's Subway Move" by Pete Biro, "Turnover
Simplex" by Tabby Crabb, the totally unbelievable "Copperfield
in Iraq" by Pete Biro (an unusual version of "three card monte"),
and a nice thread on the Faro Shuffle. Douglas Larson's advice
on how to make an inexpensive and highly functional practice mirror
is also in this file. There is a thread with recommendations of
books on mentalism, some advice on the care and feeding of rabbits,
and Jim Hoy's information on using a Vest Servante. Of course,
there is also the usual MAGIC! philosophy, news and chit-chat.

Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

Re: FORCE DECKS

You probably won't need to practice 200 times. A hundred should do!
You might try picking out what you think is an opener effect or at
least one effect that you like the most. Then do that one effect for
lots of people. (Can you do it at the counter at your store?) Keep
doing it until you have honed it down to near perfection. You can do
it in your sleep and you usually get the reaction you want. Then learn
a second one the same way and then put the two together. Keep this up
and you will have a routine. By the way, Max Maven's book Focus has
some great tricks you can do without the need for a table or flat
surface. Those are handy to know when you are waiting in line at the
Castle!

Re: WATCH

I like to do short visual tricks while waiting in line at the Castle.
Here is one I can claim originality for only because I have not yet
read about it elsewhere. It is so simple though that I am sure it has
been around for about as long as wristwatches have been around.
Anyway...
The effect is you are doing a coin roll with a half dollar. For those
spectators who are knowledgeable about trick coins this is unstated
proof that it is a genuine half. You can even let them examine it
because it is a real half. As I am rolling the coin I will sometimes
patter that this is not a regular half dollar it is a trained half
dollar- I can't do this with a regular half. I then ask if someone
else has a half dollar. If so I use that and if not I pull out one of
my own and let them examine it because once again, it is a regular
half dollar. I tell them all to watch. Both coins are in my left palm
up hand as I slowly close my fist. Watch- as I point to that hand, I
give it a little jiggle. Did you see it happen? I pull out the
regular coin from my loosely closed fist and place it in my pocket. Do
you know how I know it was the regular coin? Because the trained coin
has gone. Now watch- then I point to my watch. From underneath I
carefully pull out the trained half dollar.
For those of you have not already figured this out I'll explain!
What is required is a regular half dollar, a half dollar shell and of
course a wristwatch with another half dollar placed under it. If you
have a loose fitting watch, a small piece of double stick tape or a
loop of scotch tape will securely hold it. I start with the shell
palmed in my left hand and bring out the regular half dollar from my
right pocket and start doing a coin roll. This always catches the
attention of the laymen. I let them look at it since this is my
"trained" coin. I then do a shuttle pass. (If anyone doesn't know
what that is, look in any basic coin book or ask and I will post a
description of it) I ask if anyone else has a regular half dollar and
at the same time I am reaching into my right pocket with the palmed
real half. If someone else has one, great- I'll use theirs. If not,
I pull out my palmed coin and continue. The entire time I have been
standing their with my left hand palm up with the shell clearly in view
so there is no suspicion of a switch. They think they have just
examined that coin and it has been in full view all the time. I then
let them examine the second coin and place it next to the shell in my
left hand. I point out again the regular coin and the trained coin
which I then slightly overlap the regular coin with. Close my fist
nesting the two coins and turn my fist palm down and give it a wiggle.
As often as I can I am telling them to "Watch". They hear this many
times which helps contribute to the laughs at the end. I then pull out
the "regular" coin and place it in my right pocket. If it is borrowed
I un-nest it so I can return it without hesitation. The trick is done
at this point and I tell them to watch once more as I point to my watch
and slip the trained coin out from behind it. The whole thing is only
a couple of minutes at most and fun to do. I hope someone can use
this!

Re: TRIP

Well, just got back from my business trip to Washington, D.C. I was
able to work in a little magic, including a great overnight visit with
the Tabman. We had some great conversation about books and magic in
general. He showed me the tables he is making -- they are great,
really classy looking. Just the way fine woodwork should look. If
Tabby keeps it up he may just establish himself as the finest magic
woodworker of our time! I also got to meet his wife Gloria. She is a
very pretty lady and every bit as nice as Tabby. And although she is
very modest about it all, Tabby showed me a picture of Gloria sitting
in a room completely (I mean totally) filled with her trophies, medals,
and other awards from her shooting matches. Very impressive indeed!
Their whole place is really cool. It's a nice old house sitting on a
piece of very woody land. And then there's the studio. It is made up
to look like an old barn. Inside there's lots of recording and musical
equipment. I know very little about the music-making business so this
was a real treat for me. Even got to see a group recording. Tabby
said they weren't very good, but it was country music so I couldn't
tell. That's a joke, Tabby.
There was a second, much bigger convention in town, which I got
over to one afternoon. Three magicians were working there, Paul
Gertner, Tim Conover, and Mark Phillips. All were very good. I talked
to each of them and they were all very friendly and very enthusiastic.
Also went by Al's Magic shop and ran into Harvey Rosenthal. He's
featured on the latest issue of "The Trapdoor". Harvey's an excellent
sleight-of-hand guy. He showed me a couple of things including a neat
routine with rubber bands. Just a great guy (who also works for the
FBI).
I did manage, with some weaseling on my part, to sneak away one
evening and get up to George Daily's place. George is one of the best
used magic book and magazine dealers around. He has the best
collection I've ever seen. It may not be the biggest, although it is
huge, it is the "showiest". It covers his entire basement. He has it
made up like a reading den complete with nice chairs and a bar. All
the walls are lined with shelves full of books. Most of the books are
in great shape including some of the oldest known magic books. And
magazines, he must have every magazine ever published and nicely bound.
I bought a couple of items from George including a first edition of
Our Magic and some original handwritten letters of Silent Mora's to
Paul Fleming.
Well, I've probably bored everyone enough with my doings and I have
a lot to get done (we're trying to get the next list out in about 2
weeks), so I'll sign off for now.

Richard,
I missed your info on rabbits but I'd sure be interested in
learning more about them. It sounds like Dave Magnetat and I are in
similar situations - none of the other magi around here use animals
(and I just bought a dove pan).

Re: KAMAAR

What amazes me is that when I met Kamaar at the '87 Tannen's Jubliee,
it was obvious that he considered himself to be a superstar of magic
based solely on the number of times he's been on Letterman. This is
also obvious from the press releases he sends to GENII and to MAGIC
MANUSCRIPT. It really is unfortunate that there are those who
perpetuate the stereotypical image of the polyester conjuror with the
transparent tricks. In a way, though, it's good for those of us who
even have moderate sleight-of-hand ability. When I work restaurants,
I always hear things like, "I've never seen anything like that" or
"You're the best magician I've ever seen." We've all heard things like
that from the lay public, which just proves how little GOOD magic is
seen these days among the rank and file. Speaking of polyester
bunglers, has anyone ever seen a tape put out by Mr. Deception (Lou
Cacciotti, Jr.) called "Secrets of Close-Up Magic"? It was distributed
by Robbins for awhile. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I run the tape
to amuse other magician guests when they come over. It's a "teaching
tape" and I picked it up at an auction. Just a sample of the dubious
material on it. The jacket says that Mr. Deception teaches, among
other things, Three Card Monte. Does he teach the hype move? Not on
your life! He uses the old "flap card" dodge, and what's ever worse,
when he performs the trick for a lay audience at the beginning of the
tape, the denouement has the odd card saying "Better luck next time,
sucker!" It would be pretty funny if it wasn't for the sad truth that
there are guys like that (and Kamaar) making it just that much tougher
for the rest of us.

Re: WORDS OF WISDOM

Chris Carey, at the New England Magicians Conference a couple of weeks
ago, had an interesting thing to say...something I've been pondering
since then. I thought I'd share it with the rest of you. He said that
musicians, actors, dancers, etc. look down their noses at variety
artists because (generally speaking) when an actor, musician, etc.
peforms, he or she does so to express something, either about
themselves or the world...again generally speaking, variety folks
(magicians, jugglers, vents, etc.) do their respective thing, because
they can... It made me take a little closer look at my magic and what
I can do to maybe make it matter just a little bit to my audiences.
Just thought I'd lob that one out...

Re: WORDS OF WISDOM

Having been in "show" biz for 25 years on a professional
level in music and also being around movie and tv people I've
never seen anyone who had any talent look down their "nose" at
anyone else in the biz who had any talent regardless of their
chosen area of performance. Maybe I've lived a more than
sheltered life, however music has taken me to all fifty states,
several foreign shores and even to the big screen in "Urban
Cowboy."
The only snobbery I've experienced is from people who
were unsure of their talent (maybe they didn't have any) or were
fearful of being taken. I've found in many instances that my
interest in magic has given me an edge over others less diverse.
To make a blanket statement like you say Chris Carey has
done is rabble rousing and does little good for the relations of
people in entertainment as a whole.
I've found that the more talent (in any field) that an
individual possesses generally the more open and accepting they
are of all in any allied field plus, I'll say it again. Music
people generally love magic. Music and magic are allied. Even Max
Maven plays the piano as does Vernon and his teacher Ray Grismer,
Jeff Busby played steel guitar (one of the toughest of all
instruments), etc, etc, etc.....
I really don't understand Chris Carey's statement at all
and wonder where he was coming from. Perhaps he's making some
kind of statement to get people to think about what they're
doing. Don't know...

Re: JUGGLING CARDS

You can get around the "too small" problem with cards by making a mask
to hold them in place. And the stiff paper will pretty much pass
through a laser printer. The problem is the plastic coating on
"regular" blank cards - it doesn't permit the toner to fuse properly.
I think that the coating can be removed with 00 steel wool.

Re: MAGIC! #16

The sixteenth set of MAGIC! messages - #7500 (March 1, 1991) to
#7999 (March 8, 1991) - has been transfered to a downloadable
file. The file is named MAGIC-16.TXT. This means that you can
now go to the file area, download this file, and read the six-
teenth volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to
use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-16.ZIP
and is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

This volume includes a number of good effects and tips on
handling. Among them are Jim Hoy's suggestions for Trouble Wit,
notes on handling a Body Servante, Scott Cram's 2-Clubs, some
hints on Ring Flyte handling from Jim Hoy, David Lichtman's
handling of Impossible Penetration, and Tabby Crabb's Human
Cannonball. There are threads discussing the possible
bio-engineering of loaded eggs, variations on Chink-A-Chink, more
on how to live with rabbits (with a bunny routine by Richard Hart),
women's participation in magic, and a brief controversy concerning
comedy magic. There is also a discussion, with Arnaud Van Delden
of Holland, on performing magic for relatives,

Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

made the actual sketches from Ken's hands and Sid did the finished art.
I did this because it was the Perfect way to learn from Ken. Once you
learn the handling you can adapt the Patter/Presentation... but you
MUST LEARN the correct handling.

Re: TIM CONOVER

In a previous life I ran a gambling house complete with
Faro game in Carson City. One day a particularly nasty customer
came in. Around 1903-04, I think it was.
He did a few card tricks for the guys at the bar before
settling down to play with some of the local boys at one of the
card tables. He lost heavy at first and asked me if we could
raise the house limit which of course I did to accomodate him.
Don't want to weigh you down with detail but one of the
regulars, Two Finger Red, came to me after the sandy haired
stranger started to win big with suspicions of card sharping,
second dealing, dirty dealing and having dirty finger nails.
Course, if dirty finger nails was a crime we'd of had to
hang everybody in town, but card sharping, second dealing, and
dirty dealing was another matter so I watched him closely. After
a particularly heavy round we observed the top card was buckled
slightly. After he cut the deck, the buckled card was still in
its' place so I asked Red to turn the top card over so we could
all see it.
You guessed it. The very same king of diamonds that the
stranger had drawn to make an inside straight flush winning the
biggest pot of the night. This didn't sit well with the boys so
they took him back to his hotel and searched the room finding all
manner of cheating devices in one of his five steamer trunks.
Of note was the leather bound presentation copy of "The
Expert At The Card Table" which was found under the false bottom
of the second trunk. An Ace of Spades was used as a book mark and
he'd only read through page 32. Good thing for us.
We lynched the stranger and buried him on boot hill just
outside the town limits. Two Finger Red wanted to keep the "hold
out" so we let him since it was a right handed unit and that was
the hand that gave Red his nickname.
Of interest here was the inscription we had burned into
the strangers toombstone:

                  "The Man Who Wasn't Erdnase"

Hey David,
I have not the slightest idea what you're talking about (the
gimmick that's in the deck and enables you to do funny things
with it) but the Piatnik cards are quite normal here. I most of
the time use the Poker size cards from the US International
Playing Card Company for 'normal' card work, and the Piatnik
cards (they are much cheaper overhere) when a card is folded or
signed.
.
Strange to hear that they are so difficult to get there. Maybe
we can make an exchange, the US cards are quite expensive
overhere (they cost about $ 5.50 overhere!). But I also heard
that the postage to send decks is so high because of the
weight....

---------------------------------------------------------------
Address this to Stan Lake....
.
Hey Stan!
Nice to hear about your coin trick. (I wished I could talk
about tricks to do near the Magic Castle.... It is not around
the corner for me!)
.
For two years I met a nice fellow magician om Mallorca (his
name is Little George Rumsey, from England) when we were
talking, drinking and doing magic after one of his shows
overthere, he showed me something like you mentioned, but the
effect is done in the spectators hand and the magic coin travels
to the spectators watch! he completely fooled me when he did it
for me....
.
I will not go into the complete handling here (you can make one
up yourself I guess) but the idea is this: You mention your
coin vanish is the fastest in the world and show them two half
dollars or similar sized coins. Have them check their watch and
remember the time. You now grasp their wrists en loads a third
coin UNDER THEIR watch. This coin was classic palmed and in
finger rest position just before. The main thing is that the
coin was (classic) palmed for some time and has body
temperature. I goes very fast and they will suspect nothing!
Keep talking to cover any noise during the load... Have them
hold their palms up (both hands) and drop a coin in either hand.
Ask them to closely look to the two coins and ask them to select
the coin you are about to vanish. Take this coin and fake
transfer it (thumbpalm), immediately take the other coin from
their hands and drop it (together with the palmed one) in your
pocket. Say 'Okay this coin it will be!, now watch...' Make a
gesture and show your hand empty.
.
By this time they will have theirs hands lowered again and
forgot all about you touching them.... Ask the spectator to
check the time again, sometimes the load did succeed so well (or
the watch so great) that they don't spot the coin. If this
happens ask if they want to know how it is done and check their
own watch again.... etc.
.
Please let me know if you tried this and how the reactions are!
Because the spectator is involved, it is much stronger! Because
you mentioned it here, I remembered it and will also play
around with it again I think.... See you! Arnoud (from the
heart of the small country)
.
Hey this is great! I just got an idea about something that's
even stronger... Find out a handling inwich both coins vanish.
Then reproduce the first one from under your own watch and use
the other one under their watch for a knock-out! I think this
is a very strong close-up effect indeed! We'll keep in touch!

Well, I think I know why the U.S. decks are so expensive in Holland and
why the Piatnik decks are so expensive here. I just checked and a
poker size deck weighs about 4 ounces (113 g. ?). Airmail postage from
the U.S. to Holland would be $3.60! The U.S. decks are normally about
$2.00 here and sometimes go on sale for around $1.39. I will check on
surface mail and maybe we could exchange some that way.

Regards.

Twisting Aces

Triple Buckle Turnover
Misdirect with A-spades and flip the stack in the left
Place A-spades under the now flipped stack and turn over
Elmsley to show A-hearts
Elmsley to show A-clubs; underground the final card
Triple buckle turnover
Elmsly to show A-diamonds; underground the final card
At this point the cards are 3 facedown and A-diamonds up
A-diamond is 2nd from the top.
Spread the stack and remove the A-diamonds to position it
onto the end of the stack and keep a finger break on the
  A-spades.
Close the stack and Cut the cards at the break, turn the
bottom two cards(these are below the break) face up and
place them under the two cards above the break this is to
  apparantly right all the cards
Flip the stack to facedown and Elmsley to show all the backs
the same (facedown) last card is always underground until
you want to expose the A-spades.

Let me know if I missed or messed something up. BTW I
believe that they may have a follow up to all the sessions
at next months meeting as many people were having trouble
because of the limited time to practice

"It" is "The Magician," a new piece of "modern art" contributed by an
artist named "Michael" (Apparently his folks were wise at the time of
his birth and decided not to grace him with their last name). Unveiled
on March 7th, it has replaced the very lovely birdbath that stood
across from the entrance. It is 20 feet high and made from parts of
cars and trucks. To quote from a Castle blurb, "It looks like a black
cat wearing a red lined magician's cape fashioned from an automobile
hood. The artist says it was inspired by Lance Burton."

Re: TIM CONOVER

By all accounts Two Finger Red went on to become the Lt.
Governor of Nevada. He won his spot on the ticket while playing
in a high stakes poker game at the state house with the incumbent
Lt. Gov. who made the mistake of assuming Jerome McGill (Red's
real name as he was now leading the straight life) would never
get the king of diamonds he needed to fill an inside straight
flush.
In 1923 shortly after Red's demise his personal journal
surfaced in a collection of political memorabilia belonging to
Russell "Rapid Rake" Reynolds noted collector of gambling devices
who'd gotten into collecting after he "couldn't get a good game
up if he gave away free beer" because of his propensity to rush
the pot.
On page 141 of Jerome's handwritten account of early
Carson City gambling houses and the gamblers who frequented them,
he (Red) states positively that the sandy haired gambler they
lynched that August day in 1906 was a semi-professional card
cheat named Benjamin "Mr. Marm" Smedley. It seems Mr. Smedley was
the school teacher in Junction, NV just across the county line.
After "Mr. Marm" didn't show up monday, his wife knowing his
intentions to "fleece the flounders at The Tiger Club" came
looking for him and discovered Red sporting the unprepared and
unlucky Smedley's pocket watch which had been a gift from his
father upon his graduation from Harvard.
Because of this information we can state conclusivly that
Benjamin Smedley did not write "The Expert At The Card Table" and
was not Erdnase. In fact, "Mrs. Marm" who was married to Jerome
"Two Fingered Red" McGill in 1911 stated from her death bed in
1939 that knowing his interest in card tricks she gave Benj.
Smedley the little book as an anniversary gift having bought it
at a police auction in San Francisco sometime late in 1905. It
was a guilt that she carried to her grave.

One side has the locking mechanism, and the other has a center disk

For those who may have procrastinated getting their room reservations
for Desert Magic here is a list of hotels within walking distance of
the Tropicana, and their reservation numbers.
      Excalibur 800-937-7777
      Ramada Hotel San Remo 800-522-7366
      Hacienda 800-634-6713
The best $$$ deal though is Motel 6 just about 1-2 blocks away at 27.95
per night including the weekends. Their reservation number is

Re: GREETINGS

Hi Burt. Thanks for the kind words. Ilike to say I'm a Dove Magician
by choice! I work in the classic style with 40's type music and dress.
I have quite a number of original touches and recently ( Feb 1990 )
recieved a nice compliment from Micheal Ammar in regards to a champagne
bottle vanish I use in my show. I was the Second place winner at PCAM
and was the closing act on the opening night of the 1990 Magic Cruise.
I'm not much of a finger flinger and any body on the cruise can attest
to that fact! I like to work restaurants but I have a ninety minute
touring illusion show that makes me alot more money so touring is my
main income. I also worked extensivly for Cunard Cruise lines for
three years before leaving the seas. Please forgive the spelling
mistakes but my hands are not as fast as my mind and time is money on
this end of the line. So what are your interests?

Re: CHEAP US PLAYING CARDS

I was just down at my local CVS pharmacy, and saw bicycle rider backs
on sale for 99 cents! I bought a few packs, and took them home to
discover that they are the low-grade cards, or at least I'm pretty sure
they are -- the rough edges seem to be the biggest giveaway.
I was under the impression that the low-grade cards were sold in
bubble packs only, and were missing a seal. Either this is not the
case, or I'm imagining the poor quality of these decks. Anyone have
any info?
(For you L.A.-dwellers, these are good junker cards for torn and
restored and stuff -- at 99 cents a pack, get down to CVS!)
I have, as I'm sure you all have, noticed a decline in card
quality over the last few years. Decks don't last as long. Two
questions -- I know Tahoes are ancient history -- what happened to
them? Second -- what are better cards for normal manipulation than US
Playing Card Co. cards?

Re: ALL THAT GLITTERS IS GLIT

Was rummaging round in some stuff looking for something
or another and ran across an idea I used when I performed for a
bunch of kids at a free school in Amherst, Massachusetts and
since there was some discussion of egg bags, the Malini/Miller in
particular I thought this might be something that at least one of
you could use and since I'm not using it anymore.....the rest of
you just ignore this and keep moving.
Quickly, I'd been doing a salt vanish and production in
bars where I was hanging out at night playing the guitar and got
this call from my son to come to his school to entertain the kids
since "my dad is a magician." Well, you love your kids and wanna
help out so I tried to taylor my "act" to six year olds. Used
multi-coloured glitter from the dime store for the salt vanish.
I've spoken about the kids egg bag routine before so I won't gore
you with the details but theres one thing I forgot to tell you.
The egg I was using was hardboiled and blown. I punched a
quarter inch hold in the side and using a funnel, filled it with
glitter. Just put a small circle of clean white tape. If you're
skitzoid like me you'll fill the hole with epoxy and using
modeling techniques "weather" it to match the egg, but a piece of
tape works fine. They'll never see it if you don't look at it.
Well just before covering the audience with confetti from
the "egg basket" I produced the vaniquished litter from the egg
by getting their attention on the egg, holding it way out front
and then cracking it and making a real mess with the litter. The
kids loved it and will talk about you for days, your kid will
think you're super and the school will love you but NEVER invite
you back as they think you're insane.

The official Castle blurb sayeth, "If the 1990's style of of the piece
seems to jar with the 1890's atmosphere of the Victorian 'Castle' it
may serve to remind people that the ancient art of magic is also the
newest hot item on the entertainment scene..."

Personally, I think it displays an extreme lack of taste on the part of
those responsible for allowing it. It really worries me to think that
anyone who would permit it would be allowed to continue to mess with
the Castle surroundings and decor. And when you consider that the rest
of the Castle was practically built single-handed by the same person,
it generates a certain level of confusion.

It is particularly noteworthy that so far NOT ONE PERSON on here has
had anything good to say about it.

Re: ERDNASE POTATOES

Every night for over a week I've been engrossed in "The Man
Who Was Erdnase." This is the book that created the recent
controversy between Jeff Busby and John Booth over who actually had
the scoop on Erdnase. There was some controversy also over who
actually had the right to publish the material since Booth seemingly
played no part in the actually research but that is all another
story and well documented in the magic press and isn't the point of
this.
Maybe Milton Andrews was and maybe he wasn't (though it
looks like he probably was, and if he wasn't who was he anyway).
The story of Andrews life is a good one as he was into some of the
same stuff we're all into anyway (well, except hopefully murder,
grand larceny, etc, etc).
The 2ND HALF OF THE BOOK (to me) is worth several times the
price of the book to anyone wanting to know some of the behind the
scenes stuff relating to gambling and magic book publishing during
the first half of this century. The info on how "Revalations"
finally got published is worth it alone if you have such an
interest. This information was a surprise bonus to me and info that
was welcome.
Andrews was a BUM, but in a few months of ego and need he
perhaps turned out what was to become the most influential card
worker's book published in this century.
Magic people have a neat way of overlooking a fellow
magicians personal shortcomings if they otherwise stay close to the
Principles Of The Magi. It is because of this we can applaud
Erdnase' work and forgive his foibles if Andrews was indeed he.

Artists and drugs don't mix. If he wasn't high on something when he

excuse is. As soon as I log off I'm going to write a letter of

I don't know. For those that are unfamiliar with the Castle it is a
beautifully restored Victorian type mansion built in 1908. The "art"
is a conglomeration of painted car parts. Looks like a pig on a pole.

Re: MAGIC CASTLE ART

RE: PIG ON A POLE
Saw the "Art" sprouting from the Castle fountain last night. As I was
waiting for my car I heard many comments from visitors. Most thought it
looked like a pig, all thought it was ugly and an eyesore. One first
time visitor said "It is a shame that such a classy place as this would
have such an ugly piece of sh** serve as the final impression when you
leave"
For those of you out of the area let me describe this
masterpiece/atrocity. In the center of the Castle fountain which is a
small white marble pool flanked bytwo lions, is a black cube about 2
feet wide. From this sprouts a pole about 3-4 inches in diameter about
14 ft high. Halfway up the pole is an automobile differential housing.
At the top is a sphere which serves as a head. There are triangular
ears, like a cats. The nose looks as if it were made by welding on a
disposable paper cup. Eyes are pierced into the sphere, and nostrils
are pierced into the end of the nose. The interior of the head is
illuminated with a yellowish light which shines through the eyes and
nostrils. About three feet down from the head is a horizontal crossbar
of the same pipe as the body. It is about six feet long and at each end
it has an elbow with an arm returning toward the middle of the body The
angle on the elbow is about 60 degrees which means the end of the arms
are forward of the body by about 18 inches. the ends are seperated by
about the same distance. From these stubs (They aren't hands) water
pours forth into the pool below. All of what Iv'e described so far has
been painted gloss black. Attached to the "shoulders" or crossbar is a
cape made from the hood of some unfortunate small car. It is painted
blight red. The narrow end is attached to the shoulders and it hangs
straight down.
P.S. Another comment heard: "All it needs is Peter Pit's Steel Tie"

Re: PIATNIK DECKS

Thanks to Howard Schwarzman, we now have a source for Piatnik decks.

I can't comment on the handling, since the only ones I have are all
part of Juggling Cards and are all gaffed. But I can describe some of
the other design characteristics. The cards are bridge size and feel
well made. The backs have a central circle design, a sort of woven
appearance surrounding it, and a decorative boarder (no, not at all
like an Aviator back) with ample white edges. The fronts are
really nice - pips in all four corners. The pictures for the Joker,
King, and Dame (yep, D's instead of Q's) are very graphic, far superior
to the U.S. Playing Cards artwork (I can't comment on the Jack, I don't
have one in the partial deck). I know that many people rely on the
look of Bicycle decks to diminish suspicion, but there are probably
some classy routines that could benefit from the nicer look of the
Piatnic decks - and I guess that if you are performing in Europe, it is
the Piatnics that would diminish suspicion.

Howie would apparently like to move 'em out in dozens. But I'd like to
try the handling, etc. on just a couple first, so is there anyone,
particularly in the L.A. area, who would like to split up a dozen of
these decks? (Don't worry, Howie - We'll probably like 'em and want
more).

Re: ARTS SHMARTZ

Does anyone have a good source for water proof fuse. Last night a small
contingent of magic ninja's and I crept up to the Castle after closure
and attached large amounts of C-4 to the monstrosity pearched before
the entrance, the plastic explosives were stratigically placed to make
the "art" fall away from the Castle, thus preserving the classic
exterior of our beloved "country club" (I call it a country club 'cause
we have "Pattering greens"). We lit the fuses but unfortunately forgot
the water falling from the metal migrane. Our fuses were ruined and
alas we had to abort our mission. So if anyone knows where we casn get
some waterproof fuses we'd appreciate it very much (don't ask where we
got the C-4!).
Also has anyone thought that maybe we can get the thing removed by
calling the Los Ageles Drought Busters by calling attention to the
factr that is using precious water!
And to top it all off, maybe we should print all the messages on this
barg art and mail it to the board of directors, not editing , nothing,
let them know how we really feel.
Also since we can fill out rating cards on performers at the Castle
how's about filling out cards for this piece of unrecyclable excrement!
As always...The one, the only...

Re: COLLECTIBLE MONEY...

Yesterday while doing some shopping at the Beverly Center (for
all you people not living in L.A., the Beverly Center is a
trendy mall) I stopped at a store named "The Gallery of
History." This store is a collectors dream. Mounted on the walls
are literaly hundreds of documents, photo's and posters signed
by the original people (ie: for example they have a soldiers
discharge notice from the military signed by George Washinton,
or a letter to written by Robert E. Lee
describing a battle during the Civil War). All the documents are
for sale and range from under $400 to well over $50,000! One
item of interest was a picture/postcard of Harry Blackstone, Jr.
signed by him (couldn't tell who it was signed to though). The
item was nicely framed (or as the salesman called it "archival preservation") in brass with a
black mat. The item was priced at (now get this) $695! Now I
have about 10 photo/postcards signed by Blackstone, Jr. to me,
as well as posters, pictures and assorted other "collectibles"
signed by a variety of other magic personae (Henning,
Copperfield, Anderson, Vernon, Slydini, Thompson, Sigfreid/Roy,
etc.). I figure I'm sitting on a gold mine!
The salesman...eh...curator explained that they have well over
150,000 documents in stock and the prices vary depending on the
age and the prestige of the person. He told me that items signed
or owned by Houdini were difficult to acquire and brought top
dollar. He also told me that he has a well know personality who
is one of his clients that recently bought a new home and has
room to add to his magic collectibles. He is looking for
vintage "original" illusions and small magic as well as items
signed by such magic lumineries as Nixon, Thurston, Dante,
Bamberg, Okito, Thayer, Keller, etc. The curator made it known
that the client is willing to pay top dollar for items.
So look in your closets, open your boxes, search through your
attic or go to every magic swapmeet you can find, there's mucho
money to be made!
                         The Geekman!
P.S.: Do you think I'd be paying too much for a letter signed by
P.T. Barnum at around $3500?

Talked with a couple of magiciennes recently. One of them maintained,
without bothering to elaborate, as if it was self-evident, that "all
dove acts are inherently sexist."

This morning, in a totally unrelated manner, I came across the
following quote:

"What matters is not the length of the wand,

Are magic wands merely extensions of sexism in magic? Could they be
the reason women don't enter the field in large numbers?

He blindfolded me, but I think thatz where we had lunch.

Scott Davis is a guy we should all get to know better. He
grew up in So. Cal and had Les Smith at Owen Magic show him the
ropes when he was a kid of 13 to 20. Scott is another woodshop
magician so we had mucho to discuss. He'll be coming down for the
weekend in a few weeks as he's pretty close. He's designed a new
type of locking spirit slate which he's offered me the rights to
build. It will be published in the Spring issue of Seance. He
has also successfully built a locking flap card box in walnut,
but has no desire to build more. Will be teaching me how to build
when he comes down. I've a dream of a rosewood card box and plus
stopped by the wood store in balto and ordered some Cocabolo
wood. Want to lay in some Koa from islands also.
Scott has been publishing Seance for almost two years and
is ceasing pub cause he's BURNT OUT from doing that and PEA News
at the same time. He has one complete file left for sale and
thats it except for five he's keeping for future incase he puts
it out in book form. I'm glad I've got a file and value the
information contained therein.
He would make a valuable addition to MAGIC! and am
encouraging him to get online after SEANCE ceases this coming
fall.

I think that if it didn't have the face of a pig, and if it wasn't

through the differences between origami and kirigami and I thought
"Dodge Colt" was all the Japanese I needed to know.

Re: "ART" THOU JESTING?

Think that the Board of Directors should get a copy. Will look into
doing it, but on a tight rope right now, both before and after Desert
Magic.

Re: BICYCLE CARDS

The rumor is TRUE - Bicycle cards have turned to trash. Opened up one
of my CVS 99-cent decks today and the edges feel like sandpaper. The
corner pips are totally out of line - the entire deck is lopsided with
almost NO WHITE BORDER on one side and a LOT on the other - BOTH FRONT
AND BACK.
Split one and the center cushion core is still there, but there is no
surrounding edge. Looks like it was chopped/stamped out of a large
sheet of laminate rather than assembled.

What do we do?

Re: BICYCLE CARDS

My (as usual) UN-EDUCATED GUESS is the cheap outlet prices for Bicycle
cards gets you FACTORY 2nds. If you check magic shops, or Haines House
of Cards MY GUESS is they have the good ones.

Re: PIATNIK CARDS

Howie Schwarzman just called and was concerned that I'd scared some
people off of his Piatnik Cards cause I quoted them as being xpensive
at 6 bux a deck. Howie sez the cards are cheap. 33$ a dozen and 2.75 a
deck. Sorry Howie, and as I promised I will let you take care of your
own biz in the future (Howie will appreciate this).

Re: ARTS SHMARTZ

Yes David, I think 20 or 30 pages of our honest opinions would help get
the point across that we don't like it, don't want it, it doesn't
belong there etc. I sent a letter last week and I'll gladly send
another. I heard somewhere that one letter equals the opinions of some
50 people. Meaning only one of 50 will bother to write. I hope we can
make enough of an impact to let the board know that the vast majority
of members and visitors find it in poor taste to have that monstrosity
perched in front of our club.
