Re: OREO COOKIES

I got a letter yesterday from I.B.M. about Harry Blackstone Jr. and
Nabisco teaming up to do a promotional this summer. They will be
looking for about 100 magicians to perform in supermarkets across the
country using Oreo cookies in their routines. Maybe they will do a
"Cookies Across" routine or the "Malini Cookie Bag", or Chink-a-cookie
Anyway, more news will be coming out soon about auditions. It sounds
like it could be fun. It goes on to say that performers will not only
be paid for the performances but will be reviewed by judges and have an
opportunity to go on an international tour with Blackstone in 91-92.

Re: BICYCLE CARDS

I'm guessing that Biro's guess is right. Factory seconds are what you
get for 99 cents.
It's a shame that the U.S. Playing Card Co. has such little regard for
its good name over a long period of history to let junk product out
in regular packaging!
Here's what to do...
Send the Ace of spades and a Joker from each bad deck you buy back to
U.S. Playing Card Company with a note expressing your dismay at their
recent lack of quality control. I'm sure they will replace the
inferior decks and, hopefully, if enough people take the time to return
the faulty decks, U.S.P.C.C. will discover that it's just not
cost-effective to turn out garbage. As a bonus to you, you will have
lots of free spare cards for signing, tearing, splitting, folding,
etc.!

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

I can see the symbolism in the magic wand even if it is stretching a
point, but the dove act seems a bit obscure. May be allusion is to
giving birth (one of the few incontestible area where men and women are
not equal in any way) and if so are rabbit from hat etc also sexist.
And if you really want to get into the sexist allusion stuff almost
every stage act is horribly sexist. How many men are sawed in half,
cut ito thirds and pulled apart, burned in a coffin, speared with
multiple swords, pulled through impossibly small holes etc. It is
always (or almost) the job of the female assistant to be mutilated and
restored. Besides Marilyn fits into such contraptions better than I
do.

My x mom-n-law lived in Casadega for about 15 years
finally moving to Smokey Mts hideaway. A well meaning, but
basically "lost" soul. Have seen many fall prey to crystals,
talismans, charms, runes, numbers, etc, etc. I told one crystal
influenced gent (now he's into Tai Chi Chuan - much better) that
my house was built on top of one of the largest crystal deposits
in the east and that all kinds of strange and wonderful things
were happening (true it is a crystal bed). He understood. I'll
have to ask him why he forsook crystal witching.
Now, a nice wooden card box or a mahogany Spirit Slate,
thats something I can relate to. People were seeing ghosts in
here for awhile (me too, I think) so what can I tell you about
that. And then theres the Legend of the Spring which we're trying
to sell to he highest bidder.

It is amazing that anyone would put on two different levels of quality
in the SAME packaging - I looked all over for any clue and there is NOT
one. These are rack decks that, prior to the sale, were priced $2.19.
I think I will write a complaint to U.S.P.C.C. - but the problem is
that I bought a bunch of decks for an effect that only works with
UNOPENED packs - so I can't open 'em all and send in the cards.

Look at the most highly paid vaudeville act (in its day) a magician...

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

I admit to a certain difficulty with all dove acts being "inherently
sexist." I was just passing on the words of a magicienne.

There may be a degree of inherent sexism in many stage acts. Some, of
course, are blatantly so. But you also have to wonder what the
definition of "sexism" is - does it mean that men and women should be
treated alike, and behave alike, under all conditions? A silly thought
at best. As to sawing in half, etc. a lot of it has to do with size
and flexibility, as you pointed out. Kevin James does pretty well with
Antonio though.

Incidentally, there is something about the Pendragons act that always
bothers me. Jonathan makes a big deal about how equal Charlotte is,
yet she is STILL the one who gets sawed, stabbed, etc.

Peter Kane's "Gypsy Curse" was marketed by Emerson & West in the

Emerson should have some sets left. Fred's version was _not_ the same

Re: CLOSE-UP FOR KIDS

I read your article about table hopping for kids with great interest
and found the advice very practical. With the faltering economy, and
the importance of keeping our jobs, I thought this might be of some
interest to Magic! readers. Several years ago, I worked in a restaurant
with a cute logo. I got a piece of stationery with the logo on it and
xeroxed it (enlarged it too) so I had multiple logos about 3"x3". I
bought some tissue paper and cloth tape, in colors to match the color
theme of the restaurant, made up a bunch of hat tears with the
restaurant's logo prominently displayed on the brim. I always palm off
the torn papers at the end, rather than leaving that suspicious looking
"flower" on the hat anyway. This proved to be very popular, so I did
the same thing with the panties tear, making panties with the logo on
them. The owner loved it and even bought the "arts and craft" supplies
for me. I'm at a different restaurant now. Must work this up again. The
owner was very happy when kids walked out wearing his logo. Also it's
a refreshing change from card and coin tricks.
BTW, I did the panty tear for adults, not kids.

Re: SEANCE MAG

Well Max,
I'll tell you what I think. He was sleeping with a
crystal under his pillow claiming that it "recorded" his dreams
so he could "play them back" later on for edification. He sent me
a booklet and a "starter" crystal for myself. He would "purify"
the studio before each session, etc.
Maybe if you tell me that there is something to crystal
use then I'll take another look, but Tai Chi excercises
definately do something for bothe the body and the mind. The
philosophy of the Chinese masters attracted me to this area of
study over a decade ago when I worked for a Chinese family. I
almost returned to Taiwan with them in 1981. Was the band leader
at their hotel (lived there too) and got up early each am to
exercise with the Lee family (grandma on down).
Currently at my studio, Ancient Springs Recording, we
have a Piscaway Indian Medicine Man come in to purify with Alder
smoke and chants. This spring he will be making me a large
Medicine Wheel on the hilltop between the house and studio to
give the Great Spirit something to aim at when he's taking target
practice.
I have much respect for all that is ancient and
mysterious, but when a "seeker" bounces from "new thing" to "new
thing" looking for edification I have little hope that they'll
find it.

HI, Over the weekend I was in Vegas and I went to see "David

for the 1100 people he then told us the story of how he cut off his
finger doing the same trick in altintc city. so what you might of read

he said that on april 9th when he does the train vanish he will show
some train cars on tv, what he wants you to do is TOUCH THE TV AND
DON'T FEEL LIKE A FOOL when you pick any train car on tv and he will
tell you which one you have your finger on!!! after that it says in my
program that: "watch david as he makes a 70-ton Orient Express train
car vanish in mid-air." it's going to be called "The magic of David
Copperfield 13: Mystery on the Orient Express". Well, I hope you all

Re: DANNY

Last week while vacationing in the Florida Keys I ran into an
old friend of many years, a magician with whom I performed
many times, Danny Johnson. Danny has moved to Key West,
Florida and is attempting to make a living performing street
    magic at Mallory Square.

Danny is in his forties and is profoundly deaf but if you saw
him performing on stage, to music, you wouldn't know he was
handicap-ped. I knew him as a kid in New York City when he
was one of Doc Hurwitz' boys. He did, and still does, an
    excellent magic act.

Danny has been working school shows and club shows around the
country for many years and has appeared on shows at many
magic conventions. But, the bottom has dropped out of the
school business because the demand has shifted from
    entertainment to educational programs.

Danny does card productions and manipulations, linking rings,
a Mickey Mouse levitation, 3 to 1 rope, among other things.
I suggested that he learn George Sands' ROPESATIONAL, MISER'S
DREAM and EGG BAG. He is a pretty good mime and uses a lot
    of body language.

Spaces on the pier are assigned by a draw each evening.
Unfortunately the competition from the talking performers is
strong and when he is positioned between two talking acts he
    is overpowered.

Danny would greatly appreciate any suggestions regarding what
tricks or routines to perform that do go well on the street.
Keep in mind that his speech is impaired and his voice is
    soft due to his deafness.

I've never done street magic but perhaps some of you have.
If you folks have any suggestions, ideas, bits of business
that you can share, I will compile, print and send them to
him. Of course, I will post his replies for all to see.

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, suggestions regarding HOW TO GET THE
    MONEY would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. to Pete Biro: Danny is planning to come to Baltimore
for the convention and would like to know if you can use him
as a performer. If so, I will give you his address.

P.P.S. We had a great evening seeing and visiting with Jeff
McBride who was performing at the Tennessee Williams Theater
    in Key West.

No, it doesn't bode well at all - these were rack packaged with

here and send samples back to U.S.P.C.C. with a complaint.

automation. I plan to send some back and let U.S.P.C.C. figure it out.

Re: BICYCLE CARDS

OK,
I called US Playing Card yesterday and talked to two
different people before I got put on hold "forever" and since it
was my dime I didn't "hang" long. I asked them why the quality
control seemed to be going downhill in some respects. Got
shuffled and then dropped. Customer service promised to call back
yesterday but didn't - maybe today???.

Call 513-396-5700 ask for Jo Anne Worley (yep, thats what
it sounded like) in Customer Service to find out. Maybe since
California is sinking into the deep blue they're sending all
their culls and seconds out there since it doesn't matter any
more.

Idid get some "good" decks recently, but I'm not a heavy
user and a dozen will last me a while. Maybe a call or two to
some of the local hivol dealers will net some more info. USPCC
was quite nice but didn't deny the contention. Maybe I'm not
assertive enuf. Could be automation as you suspect and most card
players prob don't mind. Plus, machines don't do card trix (Max
probably knows one, but like I sed, I lead a sheltered life).

Re: BICYCLE DECKS

Spoke with Mr. Jim Moore, the manager of Quality Control for U.S.
Playing Cards. Mr. Moore tells me that U.S.P.C.C. does NOT sell
seconds under the Bicycle brand name. He did say that while 99.35%
of Bicycle cards pass their inspections, he does get a large number
of complaints from magicians.

"You have to realize," he said, "we do not make a magician's card.
We make a card for the general public."

He did say that in 1986 U.S.P.C.C. did have a strike and that,
during that period, there were a large number of defective cards
produced and shipped. He said that some of these could still be in
the pipeline and, conceivably, could still be purchased. He checked
the number on my discrepant deck (Found on the Ace of Spades, in my
case the number is N1601) and said that it would appear to be of
recent manufacture. Cards with numbers beginning with "M" may have
been manufactured during that earlier period.

He said that the quality of Bicycle decks is well controlled. He
himself has a background in quality control and is a former member
of the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC). He said that
casino decks (usually produced with the casino's name on them,
but also produced with a special "Bumble Bee" design similar to
the Bee deck) are produced to a higher standard and that he might
speak with sales and marketing about producing magician's quality
Bicycle decks at the casino standard.

"Of course," he said, "these could not be sold at the regular deck
price."

Mr. Moore was astounded that the cards could have been retailed for
99-cents per deck. He has asked me to send a sample deck to him.

Christian Chelman, but NO CARDS!!

I'll keep looking, but don't hold your breath. It seems like
these things know when you're looking for them and they know how
to hide VERY WELL.

You're welcome to look at the routines, if that helps any.

Cards I just recently bought from Hank Lees ate M1610 and
look ok. I looked around in my drawers and found a coupla decks
from a dozen I bought some years back and opened one and the case
number is E1607. The E1607 is a superior card and is obviously
much older if they're following the letter serially. The printing
is much sharper, the stock thicker and the ink a tad darker. The
linin finish on the stock is more pronounced being similar to old
Tallye Ho stock.
Glad you got through to them. Must be that official
sounding voice. The took one listen to Gomer Tabman and shuffled
me off to Customer Services voice mail system. Good work and
thanks.

Scott, look for a "Doug Henning" water levitation redone.
It was featured in David's last visit to L.V. but was cut this time.
It is set in a Brazilian rain forest theme with the lady at his feet on
a platform. The water rises from the ground like a fountain and she
rises with it. After some moves by David, she rotates clear around him
and then settles back on stage.(Pendragon's do this also)
Let us know if he has put this back in the show, as I think it's one of
the best I've seen in a while, and HOPE that he uses it in his special.

Marilyn and I are working up a routine to use in the Abbotts
compepetion at this years Abbotts get together. It will begin by
producing Marilyn in something akin to a Thayer Cabinet as my well
engineered assistant. The following tricks generally revolve around a
theme of my getting the magicians assistant to do something, which she
always gets wrong to begin with but magically gets rught in the end and
much to my chagrin. After several attempts I have had enough and send
my created being back to her box to be vanished. But in spinning the
curtain to vanish her we change places and I am in the box yelling for
her to let me out. She then spins the curtain one more time and I
vanish. She walks of to the ???applause???. The design of the box
caused a problem as i had to enlarge certain areas to fit my 225lbs and
yet keep the proportions proper. At any rate it is coming, I should
start construction of the device in about two weeks after I finish the
detailed design on my cad system.

excellent applications also given, but there's far more that can be
done with it; Atsukawa has some extraordinary ideas.

I'm unclear -- was Moore, in denying that they sold seconds, also
denying that there was an inferior level of cards sold in drugstores
and the like?
..It would be interesting to get casino-quality cards, wouldn't it?
Personally, I don't believe the guy when he says quality may have been
different twenty years ago -- I'm _positive_ the quality was different
ten and even five years ago. Forgetting the printing and all that, the
_finish_ is what bugs me the most -- it just doesn't last as long.
..Of course you'll let us know if there's some real good scandal
dredged up when Moore gets the cheap Bike cards. Maybe the same person
who was selling the bootlegged Osterlind Video is behind the CVS Bike
cards!
..
I'm trying to remember where I read that second-level Bike cards were
sold in drug stores and the like -- does it sound familiar to you?

Yes, he WAS denying the idea that any "seconds" left the factory in
Bike boxes. As to the quality five years ago, he says that there was
a strike going on in 1986 and that the quality that year was VERY POOR.
He joined the firm two years ago as manager of quality control and says
that he has implemented many process control procedures.
Two decks of my cards, one opened and showing defects and one unopened,
are on the way to him. I will report back to MAGIC! with his comments.

Re: MAGIC2DB

MAGIC2DB - The Magician's Database, Release 2.4, has been uploaded
to MAGIC! by Randy Lund. This new version of the MS-DOS program
improves on the already great MAGICDB in several ways:

   * The program now includes a patter database
   * Tricks can be described as having multiple types of props
   * There is new support for various video monitors, including
       monochrome
   * A wide carriage printer is no longer required
   * File routines have been enhanced

If you are not already familiar with MAGICDB, you may wish to first
download the documentation file, MAGIC2DB.DOC, to discover what this
unique program does.

There are three files related to MAGIC2DB:

   *   MAGIC2DB.EXE   -   The program itself
   *   MAGIC2DB.DOC   -   The user's manual in ASCII format
   *   CONVERT.EXE    -   A program to convert existing MAGICDB
files to the new MAGIC2DB format

You can download these individually from the MAGIC! files area, or,
if you are familiar with the ZIP file compression program, you can
download all three in one nice condensed package - MAGIC2DB.ZIP.

NOTE: Randy and Marilyn Lund have worked long and hard on this
program. After much consideration of releasing it as a comercial
package they have decided to release it as shareware exclusively
through MAGIC! and MAGIC-NL. They are asking for a small fee ($25)
to become a registered user. Registered users receive a desktop
published version of the documentation along with other benefits.
Magic is a small field for which to produce shareware, so if you
like MAGIC2DB, you are strongly encouraged to register.
Registration instructions are included in the MAGIC2DB
documentation.

Re: MUSCLE PASS

Eric, If you're coming to D.M. this week, watch Johnny "Ace"
Palmer. He has some very nice muscle pass handlings.

If not:

Try "pouring" money out of an empty glass by "muscle passing"
into the inverted glass and let the coin drop back out into your
hand. It will look as if the coin appeared in the glass as it was
falling.

Also, try a fake transfer and slap the "coin" from one side of
maybe a sliding glass door, as you "muscle pass" the coin onto
the glass and allow it to fall back into your hand. J.Palmer,
during the Close-up Convention here in Las Vegas last winter was
even contemplating having coins fall out of the slot machines but
thought better of it wocused on
him.

I don't claim originality for the above, so all the credit must
go to Johnny "Ace" Palmer for showing these to me. If you can,
please get to one of his lectures and tell him thank you.

Re: ARTS SHMARTZ

I was with a group of folks at the lecture Sunday and about 5 or 6 of
them turned in comment cards to the effect "lose the pig." I also had
a chance to see the Friday lunch menu explaining how Super Pig came to
be. I'll be real curious if any mention of the dissatisfaction with the
statue makes its way to a menu or the next Castle newsletter. When I
first saw the pig I was under the assumption it was a gift that
couldn't be refused. So what to do with it? Had to be moved away from
the entrance. The only thing I could come up with was to move it down
by the exit from the parking lot. Its little hooves could hold a sign
"don't drive if you've had too much to drink" or "fasten your
seatbelts" or something...

Re: COPPERFIELD

Just home from seeing Copperfield in San Bernardino. OK, you can all
tell me why I shouldn't feel this way - but I think he is GREAT! He did
the water levi, but I was a teeny bit disappointed. Basically, because
it was SO built up for me before hand. A few years back I taped a bit
of Max Maven on a late night show (have no idea, now, what it was
called), but I think the "touch the screen" trick David is planning to
do may be the same one I saw Max do a few years back. Max - am I right?
OK, so it's late so this isn't the most coherent message! David did
explain about his finger, as he did last night on Arsenio. Anyone else
catch that? Anyway, really enjoyed David's show and am looking forward
to his special. Would like to be able to tape the show and rewatch some
of the new material. Once is never enough!

Ok, I'll admit it. I, as well, like Copperfield. Took the family to
his last pass-by in L.A. at the Pantages. While waiting in line to
have pictures autographed after the show, he saw my 6 year old daughter
waiting patiently in line. He blew her a kiss. Melted her, and made
me a lifelong fan.

He's got style. He's good for magic.

As of last night, the Magic Castle Library is CLOSED!
It's understandable, as a few slimebuckets have been ripping off books
at an alarming rate in anticipation of the new and, hopefully, secure
library facilities. (I'd love to get my hands around the necks of
these low-life, common criminals!) Here's just one more example of how
everyone else "pays the bill" for a few rotten, worm-infested apples...
...not only are some valuable and irreplaceable reference works now
missing from the library and therefore no longer available to the
members, but NOW their despicable acts have forced the CLOSING of the
library...making ALL the reference materials unavailable to the
members! This is, thankfully, a temporary situation and the new
library is scheduled to open in about three weeks...with a security
arrangement that includes a full-time librarian...and I'm delighted to
hear that it will be none other than T A WATERS!!! It's a perfect

Well, here we are at Desert Magic. This morning's MAGIC!
"breakfast" went great! Well over 60 people, some not yet
registered to MAGIC! and many who are in attendance. In addition to
the "How to Use MAGIC!" presentation, TABMAN displayed the
Berg-Bamberg check, as described on here previously, and announced
that the high bidder was, as if we didn't already know from his "I
won!" messages, Richard. The really beautifully framed check will
be on it's way back to L.A. and I'll arrange for the transfer.
Really can't thank Tabman enough for making this donation of such an
incredible piece of magic history and for the work of framing it so
beautifully.
-
We also presented Certificates of Appreciation and numbered,
signed MAGIC! buttons to all of the those who have been financial
supporters of MAGIC! Several were present to accept their
Certificates and buttons and the others will be mailed out during
the month of April.
-
The highlight was the surprise presentation of MAGIC!'s First "Gold
Diskette" Awards to - Pete Biro & Tabby Crabb. These inscribed
plaques feature gold diskettes mounted on them. They may become the
"Oscars" of computer magic and the first ones couldn't have been
presented to a more deserving pair.
-
NOW FOR ANOTHER MAGIC! FIRST - A DIGITIZED PHOTO, TAKEN ONLY A
COUPLE OF HOURS AGO, OF THE GOLD DISKETTE PRESENTATION TO TABBY AND
PETE (shown left to right: David Lichtman, Tabby Crabb, and Pete
Biro) IS IN THE FILES AREA. IT MAY BE DOWNLOADED AS DM1991-1.PCX.
Yep, we installed an image digitizing computer in a room at the
Tropicanna and used Canon A-1 Digital cameras at the presentation!
-
On to the heart of the matter - the Stage Competition. Pete will
probably be filing his story, with all the details, but to me the
crowd is behind Jonathan Bass with Jade as a close second.
-
More later - regards from Ron Bieber, Tabman, and the crew here at
Desert Magic.

Re: REASSEMBLING FORCE DECKS

Gee, Evan, I wish I could claim the credit for that one, but in all
honesty, I copped it from the August 1944 issue of Genii.

During the war, with all the rationing, playing cards were hard to come
by. Regular decks of cards were quite expensive. Bill Silversteen
came up with the idea of purchasing force decks from magic shops, and
re-assembling them into regular decks. Seems that force decks were, at
the time, actually cheaper than regular decks of cards. For those magi
who beat a deck to death in under a week, it seemed an ideal way to
obtain relatively inexpensive decks.

Silversteen, if you recall, was one of the first cardicians to explore
"Flash Cards". Bill, or "Lefty" as he was known to his friends, spent
many an hour cooking decks of cards in that familiar mixture of
concentrated nitric acid/sulphuric acid, and thus producing those
flaming pasteboards of which he was so justly famous. It was he who,
aptly taking Slydini's Helicopter card, and using his "Flash Cards",
turned the effect into the 1945 version, "The Kamikazee Kard", which
inflamed audiences world-wide. I used to have one of Lefty's flash
decks, but unfortunately, I was showing it to a couple of friends in
the Castle library and The Professor strolled by, and accidently let
fly with an ash from his cigarette. Needless to say, my flash deck
vanished in a proverbial puff of smoke. Had I intended this, it would
have caused quite a stir. I'm sure Dingle or at least Jennings would
have come up with an alternate handling (probably better) had they been
present to view the original effect. Dai would've raised an eyebrow,
but, after the pyrotechnics, none of us had an eyebrow left to raise.

Silversteen, in his later years, grew weary of his pasteboard pursuits,
and instead, devoted the rest of his life to the study of Zen Buddism and
its influence on modern magic. It is said, in the inner circles of the
cognocenti, that on the day he stepped into the "Happy Summerland", he
had finally captured on audio tape (actually wire, in those days) the
sound of one card shuffling.

Re: NEWS FLASH!

That is truly terrible news. That people would rip off the Castle
library is sick and pathetic. Very sorry to hear about it and
obviously the new security will be a necessity. Glad T. A. was
willing to take on the librarian position - an incredible man for
the job.
P.S. - Does the Castle insurance cover theft? Is there any hope
that the books can be replaced?

Re: DESERT MAGIC

Well, here we are - at Desert Magic and it is going GREAT. The
challenges were very good. And this afternoon Johnny "Ace" Palmer
did a terrific show and lecture to a packed house. His close was
the production of two doves from his outstretched arms. That was
followed by a long standing ovation.
In the MAGIC! files area is a PCX picture of Johnny as he produces
the first dove. The file is named PALMER.PCX - incidentally, we
are sending these images in 320 x 200 format so that they can be
viewed on CGA as well as EGA and VGA monitors.
Pete is running frantically - we kidnapped him from the Seminar
long enough to hold a MAGIC! advisory board meeting. But he is
also filling in for the recouperating Obie O'Brian, so you can
imagine the hectic life he is leading. Hardly any time for
chasing blondes. He promises to get his reports into MAGIC! as
soon as humanly possible.
Tabman is looking great and having a good time.
And here I am, long after midnight, filing reports and pictures
from the field - a first in the history of magic seminars. Hope
that help, Richard.

Re: MAGIC-NL

Glad to see that the first "live" Desert Magic photo is already in your
hands, Arnaud! Yes, these aren't very detailed as we are operating
here under some difficult conditions (the barmaids keep getting between
the screen and our hands) and we are trying to hold to something that
can be viewed on CGA as well as EGA/VGA.
BUT, once again you made magic history! We discussed MAGIC-NL at this
morning's MAGIC! meeting and the fact that these images would be going
to Europe was well publicized to all the Desert Magic Seminar
participants.
There are some folks here from France and they may be joining MAGIC-NL
too.

David,

Of course I did some promotional work under our members to annouce that
MAGIC-NL will cover this major yearly event in Vegas Semi-Live.
I think the pictures are adding something special to your reports, and
makes us here in Holland, far from you all there, feel very close.

Thanks for the promotional support to the European convention
participants, they are surely welcome on MAGIC!-NL. For your info our
telephone nr is: 31-23-386311.
The start of MAGIC!-NL looks like it will develop itself like yours, a
slow start. I see that we get more and more response, and new members
are coming in each week.
The first month we had ca. 300 calls and 300 msg's were posted.

Wish you all lots of fun there, and keep in touch with the dutch.

Re: DESERT SEMINAR

Desert Seminar: First day! Well good old Southwest did it to me
getting the kid off on the wrong foot... and I was LATE getting
here. Once here though the excitement began to build for the big
money "PEOPLE'S CHOICE" Challenge. Over $11,000 up for grabs. What I
missed was the first close up "impromptu" sessons (using
volunteers). It was organized by Roger Klause. His "usual"
partner, Obie O'Brien had to miss this one due to a Heart Bypass
operation. I Talked to Obie and he is doing GREAT and will be
doing the FFFF and the IBM this summer! The "Presidential Ball" featured
black tie, music, a buffet and
dancing. Plus a visit on the stage of the Tiffany Showroom here
at the Tropicana Hotel by "former" presidents, Richard Nixon,
Ronald Reagan and M. Gorbachov (played by Joe Stevens, Bill Wells
and yours truly in that order...) plus Roger Crabtree and Irene
Larsen as Mr/Mrs. G. Bush....Great rubber masks provided the
illusion....The the first Challenge show began, MC'd by the President's
of
the IBM/SAM Mike Ellis and Margaret Dailey!John Shable opened with his
Pipe and Fishbowl Production act
getting things going well. He later told MAGIC! he had spilled
one of the bowls of water backstage before and we told him no one
in the Audience was aware and he did real good...not to worry.Chris
Broughton followed with his "Home Boy" act and we have
never seen him "HOTTER" (No pun about the Michael Jackson flaming
hair bit).Mike Michaels, who worked the IBM in St. Louis presented his
"Mecanical Man" robot act with lots of NEW and IMPROVED material
and to this reporter looks like a real contender for a Siegfried
and Roy Lion Head award!!!!Werner Duck presented a Crazy Illusion act
with costume changes
from the Joker to Batman, his wife finished with a great
impression of Tina Turner!!!! Someone kidded saying, "She might
bet booked here in Vegas as a singer". They travelled from
Germany to perform.George Sateriale opened 2nd half with his clever
manip act,
doves, etc, using a Grandfather Clock for his table, backdrop.
Clever stuff, well received.Christopher Hart knockd 'em dead with his
torn/restored sheet
music accompanied by Barbara Striesand singing, stopping etc., as
the paper is torn and wound up with his familiar "Zombie
Arm/Hand" that grabs him and pulls him offstage to close. Another
contender, indeed!Fukai and Kimika presented an ALLL NEW act, featuring
the usual
silk, flowers etc. but the added LEVITATIN of Kimika AND HER KOTO\j
I don't think it all uploaded? but only one or two words at end didn't
maek it. WHen I get hom Mondy will re do...

Re: SEMINAR AGAIN!

Friday opened with Juan Tamariz from Spain and Roy Johnson from
Liecester, England presenting very strong lectures. To go into
detail here would be impossible )) their reputations speak for
themselves.Didn't get to the Ladies Only Breakfast (for obvious reason)
but
reports are that Barclay Shaw (who subbed for Rich Little) was
FANTASTIQUE and the ladies want him again next year!!! Barclay is
a true genius of a performer with his Puppet's Toto and his
Naughty Chicken!!!At 1:30 we were ready for the 2nd of the Two
Challenge shows. MC
was the outrageous Jeff Hobson, who literally "took no prisoners"
knocking them dead, not only with his prepared material, but his
spontaneous bit with one of the "borrowed" HEAD PIECES from the
Showgirls.... You had to be here to appreciate the hilarity of
this scene.Howard Hale, out of Texas opened with his familiar
manipulation,
linking rings, multiplying Glitter Balls in a solid fashion.Jonathan
Bass, who we met years ago as a Jr. at Boston worked a
very, very strong manipulative and bird act. He has come a long
way and the audience reaction proved it. Another that could take
the Gold.Markus Gabriel came from Austria to present a very different
act
he calls "Dancemagic" )) his modern dance work combined with
magic (IN MY OPION is the best use of stage movement to cover the
magic loads, etc. since I saw the Soviet team of Sara Kabagujina
and Sultangali Shukorov with the Grand Prix at Belgium). For some
reason the audience didn't really appreciate this act and the
reaction was less that I had expected. Follwing the Intermission a
young 17 year old from Finland,
brought from the Magic Hands congress by Manfred Thum, performed
classic card/ball/candle manipulations like seasoned pro. Not a
contstant, but had he been one I would have said "LOOK OUT". He
will be heard from in the future. I am sorry but I didn't hear
his name when intro'd and it wasn't written in the program.Hobson
opened the 2nd half with his Egg Bag and Card in Mouth to
great success, then introduced Jade, who as you know won the Gold
Medal at the St. Louis IBM Convention. Her classic Chinese magic
recieved solid audience applause throughout and maybe the best
round of applause yet. One more that can take it!!!!Closer for the
Challenge was an Illusion Act presented by Mark
Kaschube, from Chicago. A dentist by profession he (and his wife*also
a dentist) brought five assistants, several HUGE illusions
with backdrops and a LEAPARD. A Phantom of the Opera theme plus a
couple of production scenes looked as good as many of the smaller
Casino shows in town. Boy, if the audience likes ILLUSIONS here
was another contending act.\jAll in all an incredible mix of acts....
variety and an almost
complete lack of duplication (which is nearly impossible with 12
acts on two shows) made it a set of shows more than worth the
price of admission.Unfortunately I have to leave to go to an assignment
(have to pay
the rent) and I will not be here for the announcement of the
winners and the S&R presentation! Or much of Saturday's
activities. I know there will be a trade show workers seminar a
special show by Johnny Ace Palmer and a Comdy Club workshop by
Hobson... but someone else will have to report on these. You should see
Lichtman and friends (Tabman too) running around
digitizing and having a general great time!Another good one by Joe
Stevens and his Wichita Mafia. Oh, he
said next year's MAGIC! session/workshop (now that he's seen what
the heck it is) will get much more publicity and a better time
slot!!! YO!

Re: DESERT MAGIC

Here are the Desert Magic Winners:
.
1st Place - Mike Michaels
2nd Place - Christopher Hart
3rd Place - Jonathan Bass
.
AND there are pictures of them in the files area! This time
the pictures have higher resolution (640x350) BUT they CANNOT be
viewed on CGA monitors - they require EGA/VGA. The files are
named MIKE.PCX, HART.PCX, and BASS.PCX. Yep, in a couple of them
that's Sigfried and Roy doing the presentations.
.
The real winners at Desert Magic today were the attendees. JUAN
TAMARIZ (picture file: TAMARIZ.PCX) was stunning! A really great
card worker and a very nice guy presented for over 2 solid hours.
And almost no-one moved - even with MARK WILSON lecturing in
another room. The afternoon also included a session on
"Creativity and Miracle Workers" by STEINMEYER and GUAGHAN. Good
stuff!
.
This evening BURT CARPENTER, my wife and I went to the Sahara for
MELINDA. The room at the Sahara is one of the WORST FACILITIES
I've ever seen. A 29-cent stamp would just about cover the stage
of the Main Theater. And seldom have I seen a stage with such a
low ceiling. Parts of Melinda's show can't even be done in the
room. I happen to like her show. It is so uptempo, with never a
pause or a dull moment, that it feels positively electric. But
there are parts that are choppy, a few bits that should be
chopped, and it cries for better organization and an ending.
But plenty of entertainment value and plenty of sizzle. Melinda
is probably the hardest working stage magician anywhere in Las
Vegas.
.
Later today, Sunday, it is back to reality. See you from MAGIC!
Central.

W-E-'-R-E B-A-C-K... The Desert Magic team has begun to return to

teamwork that delivered the news - and photos - to MAGIC!
We are all so damned tired. And it will probably take a couple of days
to unwind and become human again. But I can't tell you how great it
was to see so many MAGIC! members all in one place. There will be MANY
more things to say, but I wanted to get a couple of things in quick:

Thanks, of course, to PETE BIRO for his hard work and for the MAGIC he
delivered here on MAGIC! Thanks to TABBY CRABB for making sure a lot
of things happened - the Tabman was many places at once, doin' "stuff"
for MAGIC! Thanks to RON BIEBER for the use of his room as a MAGIC!
hangout and as temporary "MAGIC! Central" for digitizing and
communications systems every night until 3 a.m. and beyond.
Thanks to JOHNNY ACE PALMER and JUAN TAMARIZ for their willingness to
let us surround them with digital cameras and for being the first
performers ever to allow pictures of their shows and lectures to be
sent around the World. Thanks to DAVID VANVRANKEN for all the work he
put in on a special project that we will be doing for MAGIC! members
later. And a special thanks to ARNAUD VANRIETSCHOTEN and MAGIC-NL for
calling in and calling in and for transfering the digital images to

truly performed as a WORLDWIDE team.

Re: VIEW FROM SPRING HILL

- The DESERT SEMINAR exceeded my expectations (paying for
my trip, books, etc at the BJ tables helped my state of mind I'm
sure). Next time I'll take my little Tandy 200 laptop as I missed
signing on everyday. I haven't signed on yet today so don't know
exactly what Dave and Pete told you but I've got a coupla
comments myself and hope I don't duplicate their findings as we
all look at the world through different eyes and will try to keep
it compact.
- JOE STEVENS was happy with our MAGIC! hour and invited us
back for next year. Joe also hinted, as did BLACKSTONE JR.
(thanks Burt Carpenter for paving the way), that he'd be joining
us here online.
- Reason I stayed so long was to attend the JOHN GAUGHAN
and JIM STEINMEYER "MIRACLES AND CREATIVITY" workshop saturday
afternoon. I'm glad I stayed. Talked with them both Sunday
morning about MAGIC! and who knows....
- JIMMY GRIPPO is in bad shape. He told me that if it
wasn't for GENO MUNARI that he'd be completely alone in this
world. Some slime mugged this old guy and almost killed him. Geno
is to be commended for taking the responsibility (I know he loves
Jimmy, but anyway). That's what its all about and the way its
supposed to be. Yeah.
- DON ALAN is a cool as ever. He has a great memory as he
and I had met briefly in the 70s and he remembered. I was
impressed.
- JAY MARSHALL looked great. We had an excellent
conversation in the Tropicana Casino. He sends his regards to
everyone here on MAGIC!.
- Was dismayed to see that GENII (enjoyed talking to Bill
Larsen) has March and April out and I just got Febuary. Oh well,
if I didn't know it wouldn't bother me. The James Issue cover is
a beauty. Can't wait to see it in my mail box here in no mans
land. We missed DANTE LARSEN and hope he comes out next year.
- MARK and GREG WILSON made a surprise visit and lecture.
Didn't get a chance to talk with LANCE BURTON about the Six Gun
Territory days, maybe next time.
- As far as the $10,000 MAGIC CHALLANGE goes. It was pretty
good but I wonder why someone would spend so much time and money
on developing an act (most of them) and then use crappy editing
on their background music tapes. Just doesn't make a lot of sense
to me, but since I'm in the music biz maybe I'm just picky.
- Why would a juggler juggle apples in front of a red
curtain, too I wonder? Lance floated his birdcage in front of a
blue sparkle backdrop and you couldn't see it in the back.
Details are so important. Come on guys.
- The Tropicana Hotel is an excellent place to have a
convention. Excellent choice, Joe.
- Best of course, was getting together with DAVID LICHTMAN
and PETE BIRO and the other MAGIC!ANS there at the seminar. BURT
CARPENTER entertained me with his magic (great backpalmed coin)
in the parking lot before driving me to McCarren Airport - thanks
again Burt. DAVID VANRANKEN brought up some disks with RANDY
LUND'S Magic Data Base for us. GENO MUNARI (Geno did you have
that cellular phone grafted to your ear?) for bringing Jimmy
Grippo over so he could see some old friends. STEVE BRYANT about
some of his "Apparitions" for MAGIC!. MIKE MAXWELL, LARRY WILCOX
and some other new users who I hope will "holler" at me here
online sometime.
- Inside Straight Flushes to: JOHNNY ACE PALMER and JUAN
TAMARIZ for having the vision to allow MAGIC! to video thier
respective lectures in order to capture the images necessary for
digitization. Johnny's image was in The Netherlands by 2am desert
time - a first.
- A special tip of the hat to: RON BIEBER who along with
your Sysop lugged video digitization equipment around all weekend
and kept their eyes glued to a viewfinder looking for just the
right moment to capture instead of actually enjoying the
lectures. Also for finding the best prime rib in town and not
yelling at me when I woke him up.
- PETE BIRO for "smoothing" the way for MAGIC! - like Joe
Steven's sez, "Anything for Pete" - and for having the funniest
introduction of a lecturer, JUAN TAMARIZ.
- Out to Lunch: to ROY JOHNSON who says he didn't
understand what it was all about and next time he'll get
digitized.
- Also kudos to "ZOOM" LICHTMAN for being the youngest
magician at the Seminar.

                           More later,
                              tabman

- Your photo was on the Fax when I got home. You only
missed me by about five hours. Thats a great shot of you. If that
pic is 15 years old, you're living right.
- It was fun getting fooled by the little dice box trick.
I'm gonna have to work on that one. I had a good laugh about that
this morning also.
- Am feeling pretty good this morning considering the
activity and sleeplessness of the past few days and will get back

- You're a fine magician and I had much fun swapping moves

was getting together one-on-one with some truly super folks. I
hope everybody (me 2 & u2) makes it back next year.

I should get you to pick me up at the airpark and let
Howie fend for himself (he'll read this and call me (maybe)) or
if you have a station wagon he'll pay you to take him to the

The possibility that computers have a soul is one to be debated in the
long range future - along with civil rights for silicon life forms.
But for now, you are right on target - it isn't the computers or the
modems or the telephone wires - it is the web of living magic that all
of us weave here on MAGIC!

I view the MAGIC! Gold Diskette as something that will not be awarded
anually, but that is given when it is EARNED. This year two of the
best web spinners in magic earned it for what they do, every day, for
MAGIC!

seen a similar version performed by Tom Ogden years ago
at the Castle. This magician mentioned your name as a
possible source of a transcript for the handling of
this routine. If this is true I would sure appreciate

You are on the board at all times during the day.
Or perhaps you have a computer in your office, as I do, so you can
monitor and answer whenever the urge hits you.
Finally got ahold of Geno in Vegas and will probably see him next
month in Vegas at the NAB.

with what you received.
You should share some of your stories re: getting started
in magic around Joe Berg and his Magic Studio as each bit of
history sheds light upon the overall picture.
We had an excellent time at The Desert Magic Seminar. I
wished you had been there to pick up the Berg/Bamberg check in
person, but am happy to hear you and Dr. Lichtman had lunch where
he passed it along.
Am glad you like it. You deserve it. Thanks....

Re: WORK

Sure I work. I am a freelance writer/photographer and magical
peformer/producer -- I work at home!!! Unless I am out on a photo
assignment, which is usually from Thursdays through Sundays about 2
times a month. Except in May where I spend 4 weeks in Indianapolis. My
specialty is auto racing and I work for major companies, like Goodyear,
Ford, Chrysler and a couple of magazines, like Car and Driver,
Automobile and sometimes Sports Illustrated.
Just started to write the first of 600 planned books on magic.

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC

I talked to Marilyn about your idea...She prefed the original plot
where I got to play the straight man and she got to make a fool of
me...somehow I am not surprised. Did a close up show this last weekend
and once again noticed that the only two people who made grabs for the
cards/coins etc. were women. I wonder if women feel more
comfortable/safe invading a mans space than a man would feel invading
either another mans or especially a womans space. At any rate I have
started to take closer note of these things since this discussion
started and I may start to experiment with some restructuring of style
that take this into account. I definitely plan to watch what people I
get close to.
.
Thanks for the idea....Randy

Re: BEADS OF PRUSSIA

I puchased a set from John Fedko at a Magic Castle swap meet some years
back. I have used it in kids shows and it is well received. My patter
is the standard story of the Queen's string of beads that broke. I
have entertained the idea of starting out with all but the gaffed bead
strung on a length of string or dental floss with the gaffed bead
either palmed or stolen when getting a pair of scissors. The effect then
becomes a cut and restored string of beads. I would also be interested
in hearing some other ideas.

Re: PHX OFFERING

I thought I would fill in the members of MAGIC! with a
shortreport on the Phoenix Convention. We were quite fortunate to
beable to offer a terrific list of lecturers at the three day
event.Robert Baxt led off the series on Friday, followed by Larry
Beckerand finally Loren Michaels. I really enjoyed how Becker takes
somesimple techniques and coupled with terrific presentational
ideasdisplays stimulating examples of mental magic. The first of
two evening public shows featured the works ofCheri Soleil, Kevin
James, Billy McComb, and James Williams (a 19year old Castle Jr.) The
acts were very good, but unfortunatelyKevin James drew a color blind
and brain dead lighting tech and wasforced to stop his show to ask
multiple times for a blue spot for afloating effect. It had to be
maddending to know you cannotcontinue and still be left hanging on
stage with an audienceassistant with him no less. Saturday
brought lectures by Jay Malbrough, George Sands andKevin James. George
is the creator of the Sandsational Rope Routinethat David Copperfield
was doing, or a version of same when he hadhis mishap. Some of "the
boys" got together and passed out bandaidsto all the attendee's. As he
was introduced, the mishap wasmentioned where upon George noticed one
in the front row with abandaged finger, then another, and another until
it dawned on himthe whole room had a firm hold on his leg. The joke
put him away! On the second evening show, we were treated to
LorenMichaels. I don't know if I haver ever seen anyone open a show
onsuch a high plane. He almost received a standing 'O', but
theaudience was so amazed by the high output level. Robert
Baxtfollowed with his quality comedy/magic. Allan Rasco performed
doveand card work. Unfortunately, his opening had
techncaldifficulities, his not the lighting and the act got off on the
wrongfoot. The first half was rounded out by Devino. While using
heavytheatrics, he has a deeply bizzarist turn and was very
wellreceived by the teens. However, I preferred his routine from
theSan Diego IBM convention. Joe Monti opened the second half
followedby Del Ray and closed by Andre Kole. Del Ray justly deserved
thestanding 'O' he received for the timing he exhibits interacting
withhis mechanics. A true artist. The last day held close-up
shows and lectures by BillyMcComb and Mike Rogers. Great stuff. The
best was definitely savedfor last with a planned one hour close-up show
by Del Ray. Insteadof one hour he throughly captivated approx. 150
people for twostraight hours of close-up. To describe it here would be
futile, but I will answer any questions that the membership might
have.Suffice it to say I was in wonderland. The draw of this man
isimpressive. He caused Michael Weber and Ricky Jay to fly in just
tosee him. The most impressive, however, was the couple who flew
infrom Japan for the convention just because he would be there.
There you have it, it wasn't short but it sure was sweet!
