Re: BIKE CARDS
What the guys at the United States Playing Card Company didn't tell is
that the company apparently has TWO plants. The one we all know about
is in Cincinnati, but there's another in Reno, Nevada. This became
their main plant during 1986 when the strike was on in Cincinnati.
>From talking to salesmen from USPCC over the last few years, I gather
that it is this plant -that produces the cards for the West Coast,
along with the logo-back "Bee" decks for the casinos.
This is also the plant that manufactures the gaffed decks for magicians
-- the double-face, double-back, etc. -- Bicycle cards. It is my
understanding that these decks are produced for the California Card
Company, which is the distributor. The CCC is, in turn, a division of
Chuck Kirchner's Magic City operation -- a West Coast magic wholesale
operation based in Paramount, CA. I don't know if it's true or not,
but I understand that Hank Lee is part-owner of CCC. Another rumor is
that Haines' House of Cards no longer has the "direct -line" with
USPCC on the Bike cards, only the bridge-size Fox Lake.
Certainly some of the USPCC manufacturing operations have been switched
to the Orient. The Mini-Bicycle decks currently being distributed are
marked "Made in Hong Kong". Some sales reps have downplayed this, but
others confirm these are licensed by the USPCC. In the San Francisco
Bay Area, these are readily available in Longs' Drug Stores. The
quality on these decks hits a new low for the USPCC, but they are
interesting because the mini-decks are printed in colors different than
the usual red/blue. New back colors are green, a pinkish-red, a
turquoise-blue, and even yellow! Lots k of new possibilities in small
"small packet" tricks? One East Coast dealer is already using the
green Mini-Bicycles to produce a trick using a "leprechaun' -s de -ck".
From the ad description, it looks like a remarket of a trick issued by
Tannen under Derek Dingle's name in the early 1970s.
About three months ago local Pik 'N Save stores were carrying the USPCC
seconds under the "King" brand name they - sometimes use to package
these cards. The decks were the worst of the worst, and sold for
$0.75. At first I thought they were repackaged used casino decks
because of the "Bee" backs and cut corners. But possibly they
were just badly printed seconds. I found it interesting that these
poker-sized cards also turned up with green and yellow backs to match
the Mini-Bikes. They were useless for magic -- even practice --
because of the cut corners. But I guess the public liked the pricing.
When we were back a few weeks ago, the decks they had were sold.
The downslide in quality at USPCC began when Diamond International (of
the Diamond Match Company) bought the USPCC. It's been years since DI
sold the company. About two years ago an article appeared in a
business publication talking about the new management, and the aims of
the business, but I have that article tucked away in a folder that I
can't immediately locate. USPCC did acquire the company that made
the "Tahoe" brand that magicians seemed to favor for a while. They
also acquired that great Spanish maker of cards, Heraclio Fournier and
the quality immediately plummeted.

Re: THE WHO BAG
-- -Just a note that the game of Faro also went by the name of Pharo,
Pharao, and Pharaon, so-called because the backs of the cards bore a
depiction of an Egyptian monarch. The tabster is not lacking in
knowledge, just missing a spelling checker that assesses
turn-of-the-century stuff. See the glossary on pp. 14-15 of Herbert
Asbury's great _Sucker's Progress_ (1938) for the legend of why the
game was called "Bucking the Tiger" and the early precursor of your
logo.
Malini-Miller Egg Bag? This bag - seems to have been first used by
Herbert "The Great" Albini who made a sensation of it before the turn
of the century. Enter "Prof." Otto Hornmann (the original namesake of
Al's "Flosso-Hornmann Magic Co.") who in an 1899 issue of _Mahatma_
makes the claim that it was HE who had been doing it for a decade.
(Don't have the issue handy, so - can't be more precise.) Check it
out, Pete. Hornmann's article has illustrations and they'll blow your
mind -- the "Malini Egg Bag" in 1899. Both Albini and Malini were
Polish Jews so it's possible ther -e was some communication there. By
1911 Albini was doing illusions and Malini his very different kind of
work.
The Miller connection: Charlie Miller traveled with Max Malini for a
while, even was his "chauffeur". In late 1939 Charlie received lessons
from Max Malini in working the Egg Bag. He passed this info on to
Faucett Ross in an extensive letter (about 20 pages, in my files)
filled with illustrations and the exact Malini presentation. A
comparison with the Magic Inc. Charlie Miller booklet shows that
Charlie did change the presentation and handling, but not by very much.
But Charlie couldn't f -igure out EXACTLY how to make the bag. You're
right that Margie Riser did sew the first good bag for Charlie, and
Harry, et al. So, hyphenating things right, do we want to call it the
"Albini-Hornmann-Malini-Miller Egg Bag"?!

Re: THEME MAGIC
I figured I had read enough books and seen enough videos on tricks,
effects and illusions for awhile and that it was time to work on my
presentation. So I just got done reading Magic and
Showmanship and Showmanship for Magicians and I really learned a lot
to improve my performances. One thing in particular though was how a
show consists of more than just the effects. They should all tie in
somehow or at least flow together. It sounded great and made sense and
I started the dismantling and rebuilding process of my show.
Then- a few days ago I saw David Copperfield perform. A magnificent
show. So well choreographed and presented it was a real treat. But-
I didn't see any theme or thread or unity or whatever you might call
it. I don't think the show suffered one bit. As many of you who have
seen it know, it is a tremendously entertaining performance. So I
guess what I would like to ask those many members here who know- Is
the idea of having to have a certain continuity or theme or whatever no
longer valid? If the individual effects are great and well presented
is that enough to make a good show?

It really is deceptive when counting down a 6 deck shoe, no one thinks
it can be done, but it as easy as a 1 or two deck shoe. A single deck
is shuffled after every two rounds while a 6 deck shoe may be so out of

Re: RABBITS
I recently downloaded "Magic-16" and read the messages. I get the
impression that you are either new to magic or new to magic for
children. I used to perform for kids, but never liked to do it.
However, if you are in the birthday party business, I think that
producing a rabbit in your show is a must. Here are some thoughts I've
found to be true about using the little varmits. They are very
basic...you old-timers need read no further. First, you must always
name the rabbit...never just call him a rabbit...gotta have a name.
Second, if you don't want all the expense of keeping a rabbit, buy one
from a farmer, produce it at the show, hold a raffle and give the
critter away. Everyone is happy, except the mother of the kid who won
the rabbit. I am sure that if you have a car, there will be rabbits
galore in L.A. A lot of people like to eat them. After the show, tell
the mother of the kid who won the rabbit that you will be glad to take
it back, if she can't keep it, then sell it back to the farmer for half
price. This way, you don't have to get a hutch, clean it, feed it,
etc., and you can get a rabbit of the proper size to fit whatever box
you have to pull it out of -. A guy who used to perform in theaters
around my town advertised "A live baby given away at every
performance."
Here's a basic routine I used which might give you a couple ideas.
Put the rabbit in a drawer box and open the outer drawer. put 2 or 3
pieces of candy in the outer drawer. Get 2 kids up to help. Make paper
or balloon hats for them, using break away wands and fans etc. Finally,
pick up the box and walk a few steps away from your table to let any
mommies watching know that you didn't use the table to steal the bunny.
A kid is standing on each side of you. Offer one of them a piece of
candy. btw, the candy should be wrapped up. Offer the other one a
piece. After the last piece has been taken, go to the other kid and
hold the box just high enough that he can't see into it and offer him
a piece. He has to feel around in the box (because he can't see) and
will say it's empty. Close the box, walk into the audience and have
everyone put their hands on the box, like Blackstone does on the
birdcage. They all yell the magic word etc., you open the box and,
Viola! the bunny. This usually ends the show because the kids would
much rather pet the bunny than watch magic tricks.
Sorry I got so long winded, but thought it might help. The basic
idea for this routine came from U.F.Grant's "Tricks With Hares," which
is an inexpensive and great book if you want to pull rabbits out of
things. Chao.

Re: 6 DECKS VERSES 1 OR 2 DEC
Hi Geno,
I found the BJ at the Tropicana was good. Not many
knowledgable players at the tables but not as bad as the time at
the MGM Grand in Reno when they kicked me out for yelling at a
woman who hit 19 and got a 2 ( I was younger then please forgive
me ).
I played much BJ at the Horseshoe downtown in mid 80s.
They used single deck and dealt quite deep in the deck. The six
decks at the Trop wern't too hard to track. Most of the dealers I
sat with played slowly enuf.
My play is a personal mod of the basic plus/minus system.
Additionally I try to track aces and fives. Over here in So. MD
where I'm staying there is a charity casino every day someplace
and I get to practice some, though most of the local games follow
Atl City rules on double/split, etc which I find somewhat
restrictive.
BJ seems to be the only casino game that gives the player
any hope of controlling his/her outcome, or destiny if you will.
First thing a new player must do as you've written is to learn
Basic Strategy and follow it. One dealer Sunday morning (Joe from
Boston) was explaining to a young player how to watch the deck
for "trends" (hi/low) and helped her win some of her money back.
She was at third base and the obnoxious player at first was
getting beat up because of this. Joe I like.
Was good to meet you. Thanks for bringing Jimmy Grippo by
the Seminar. He kept asking me "Where's Geno, I want to sit down"
so Don Alan went off looking for you and David Lichtman and I sat
with Jimmy and had some M&Ms.
Hope to see you again.
Best wishes and keep us posted on Jimmy,

Re: MIRACLE WORKERS
Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas at the Desert Magic
Seminar a singular event too place that (to me) was the most
important workshop of the weekend. Granted I was humbled by
Tamariz and entertained by Johnny Ace Palmer, but THE MIRACLES
AND CREATIVITY WORKSHOP hosted by JOHN GAUGHAN and JIM STEINMEYER
made my trip (actually its why I stayed over Saturday).
Jay Marshall introduced them and acted as moderator for
the discussion which was primarily a Q&A session. I can't
paraphrase the patter as it can't be done. In attendence were
Lance Burton (in shades), Al Mall, Mark Wilson, Greg Wilson, John
Calvert, Johnny Ace Palmer and about 200 others who were less
readily recognized including a large MAGIC! contengent.
Interesting to note is that JIM and JOHN already knew of
the discussion of their ORIGAMI BOX ILLUSION here on MAGIC! and
are both interested in what we're doing over here on what some
have called the CNN of Magic or MAGIC! NETWORK NEWS(tm).
I was there because of my interest and practice in magic
woodworking. To hear John Gaughan speak of the trial and error
process he goes through, the always making the next prop better,
working hard at being the best, fortified my own level of
intensity in this field (albeit mineature in my case).
When asked about creativity and where do his ideas come
from Jim referred the audience to four books which he feels are
necessary for workers in this field. Three of these are readily
available and the fourth was a very limited edition which is
quite hard to find even if you have the $1,000+ required for its'
purchase.
Fortunately another of the books would be on the
extremely hard to get list if Jim and Jay hadn't reissued it with
additions several years back. The Hopkin's book on illusion, I
think is available in a reprint as well as Devant's "Secrets
of..."
It was in effect like sitting in on conversations between
the masters and I for one am glad Joe Stevens put it together. No
trix. Ideas and solutions. Change and reinforcement. When Jay
Marshall signalled "five more minits" most had their hands in the
air for one last "pick" and John tactfully recognized Mark
Wilson who helped end it on an upbeat note. In fact the whole
thing was upbeat and very laid back.
Let's do it again.

Re: CASTLE DISPUTE
I bear no ill will, Pete. I will NOT, however, be dismissed with an
insulting label by anyone.
I DO expect some support from you, Pete, as I was responding to your
message about "what is wrong with magic."
After giving your message some thought, I decided that you were
right...the magic community tends to sweep these things under the rug
instead of discussing them openly. That, in my opinion, only causes
a continuation and possibly growth of the problems.
The claim that the dispute under discussion has "been resolved," I
believe that to be an overstatement. The narrow avoidance of
fisticuffs does not denote "resolution." As of last night, Mr. Marotta
was STILL performing a watered-down version of Johnny's gag, in my
opinion. Mr. Marotta also spouted what I consider to be a veiled hostile
reference to the "resolved" dispute during his performance on stage.
I question what Marotta was doing producing a dove at all...he's
supposed to be emceeing...a job description which should include making
the scheduled acts look their best. The headline act is Dan
Birch...who is primarily a dove act!!! The initial wonder and surprise
of Dan's first dove productions were significantly reduced because the
emcee had just produced a dove! It's like doing a linking ring
routine, a levitation and then introducing Scott Cervine!

The incident last weekend was a deck of card that were in my hands in
the middle of a trick. She want to be sure the deck wasn't stacked and
she just swiftly reached out and grabbed it right out my hand.
Fortunately the arrangement was subtle and she didn't catch on so the
trick finished well, but I was surprised that someone would be so
aggressive. This woman was at the far end of the spectrum but I have
had other women want to look at things once they were done.

Re: THEME MAGIC
So what do you mean exactly by being relevant? Relevant to what?
You could have a show with patter relevant to current events, or
effects that are relevant to a particular crowd, e.g. if you are doing
a show for plumbers you could do some effects dealing with their trade.
Do you mean that while you are doing an effect you don't just say some
off the wall remark, instead keeping your focus on the effect at hand?
Tell me more!

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC
When I was riding the Urban Cowboy Band bus I used to do
magic regularly for the guys. Gilley (the leader) especially
liked my tricks and one day his wife and secretary were on the
bus and Gilley asked me to show them a trick he particularly
liked.
I guess he'd been talking about it and they figured I
must have something stashed in my hands. At the point in the
trick just before I made the switch they each grapped a wrist and
twisted my arms forcing me to drop the extra coins I had in each
hand.
Must surmise that they resented my magical influence on
Mickey and wanted to show me up - which they did in a somewhat
painful way.
It's something I guess a lot of people think about doing
but proper decorum prevents most from completing the act. To me
it was entertainment, or mineature theatre if you will; not a
contest. Also, that old rule I'm sure applies (which I broke)
suggesting a magician never repeat a trick.
Lucky you wern't using a one way force deck. Huh?

No accusation was made; the very point of my message was to upload the
information _before_ the discussion evolved into mudslinging. I did not
make any mention of you in my message, and if you'll go back and read

fail to see how my message could be construed as "arrogant" or

Re: CASTLE DISPUTE
"Before the mud is slung too far..." is, I believe, an accurate quote,
Max. To me, that translates as:
A) Mud is being slung
B) Before the mud is slung any further...
I don't think I read ANYTHING into what you wrote. Why you chose to
include the words, "too far," is something only you can answer.
I am very gratified to find out that I DID read something into what you
MEANT. I sincerely thank you for clearing it up, Max. And you do have
my apologies if my reaction seemed disproportionately strong to you.
My original message did not include Rich Moratta's name for the very
reason that I did NOT want to involve myself in mudslinging. It was
only after Pete Biro's comments, which I do agree with, that I decided
that there wasn't any good reason to EXCLUDE his name from the
discussion. I still believe that Moratta erred grievously when he
decided to include the gag in question and again in his handling of the
situation when confronted by Johnny. I also think that Moratta is
talented. It's his judgement I'm questioning...both for the above
reasons and for using some material that I would consider to be
inappropriate for the Magic Castle audiences. Blue material is fine
for the comedy clubs, as you well know, but not for the Castle. There
was an elderly woman seated near me last night who was really offended
by some of his language, (Sh*t, etc.), and his jokes, ("Thanks for the
head," etc.).
It's a shame, to me, because he really doesn't need to include either.
He has, essentially, a very entertaining act...good comedy and good
magic. I do think he should leave the dove productions to Dan Birch
for this engagement. I'd be happy to hear your comments.

Re: DESERT REVIEWED
On Thursday the first Stage Magic Challenge was scheduled to begin at
9pm. The contestants were:John Shable, Christopher Broughton, Mike
Michaels, Werner Duck, George Sateriale, Christopher Hart, and Fukai &
Kamika. I had made plans to arrive in Las Vegas just before 9pm.
Unfortunately someone changed the schedule and started early. When I
arrived at 9 only the last three contestants were left. Because of this
sadly I was not able to see the winning act. The big surprise to me
(Since Pete hates them) was the MULTIPLYING ZOMBIE routine followed by
standard zombie. (Yawn) This was done by George Sateriele.
After the show the first informal MAGIC! meeting was held. David
Lichtman, Ron Beiber, Tabby Crabb, and myself were in attendance. Pete
said he would come but was either held up on Seminar business or just
could not find the room. There was a general magic discussion until
about 2-3 am when we all left to get some sleep so we could start early
the next morning.
On Friday morning 9am was the official MAGIC! meeting. It had sort
of been announced at the end of the show the night before as a meeting
for those interested in magic and computers and a bulletin board thing.
There were some fliers in the lobby announcing the meeting. I was
surprised to see how well attended it was. My guess is over 150 people
showed up. David gave general information about how to sign on and used
an overhead projector to show what the beginner would see on his screen
the first time he/she logged on. David then passed out the Golden
Diskette Awards, the remaining signed and numbered buttons, and a few
certificates to financial supporters of MAGIC! As the session was
breaking up Harry Blackstone Jr. told me he'd see us on the board soon.
I don't really know Harry, but I had stopped him in the Magic Castle
several months ago and invited him to join us.
For me the next event was the Juan Tamariz lecture. Tamariz went
through several card effects at a very fast pace and then explained
them. He did a jumbo three card monte where he made bets with two
spectators, an oil and water effect where the spectators verified the
shuffling, he had three spectators shuffle the deck, then spread the
deck to show that all the cards had seperated into suits and then each
suit was ordered A-K! For the next effect 3 spectators were to peek at
the index of a card while still in a pack. After major shuffling, he
revealed each card in a different way. 1st was a spell down J-U-A-N,
the next card was the chosen one. Card #2; dealing the cards off one at
a time a spectator says stop. The next card down was his. Card #3;The
deck was ribbon spread a spectator pulls out any three cards, another
spectator chooses one of those three and turns it over. It is the last
selected card. For next last effect Two spectators each count out a
packet of ten cards. Each holds his packet tightly. One by one the
cards leave one spectators packet and appear in the others. All the
effects went over very well. The only problem was that the explanations
went by so fast I could not write them down. Juan's lecture notes did
not arrive and so were unavailable for purchase at the Seminar.
Next was Challenge Session #2. The contestants were: Howard Hale,
Jonathan Bass, Marcus Gabriel, Jade, and Mark Kaschube. Master of
ceremonies was Jeff Hobson who did his hilarious fire eating act. I'll
let others here review each of these acts.
At 4:30 I was off to the seminar held by Dick Ryan on working trade
shows and hospitality rooms. It was a question and answer session. Dick
was selling his Confidential Booking Reports for about $75.00. The
basic advice was that you have to have experience in the trade show
industry, don't break the rules of the show promoters, keep it very
commercial, and if you see a trade show magician working, don't take up
space in front of his booth. He and his sponsor are trying to make a
living not hold a magic convention. By all means don't stand in front
of his booth and pass out YOUR business cards to passersby. This has
happened to him SEVERAL times. (Some people have NO class)
At 7:30 Johnny Ace Palmer (One of my favorites) did his FISM winning
act, and gave a short lecture on choosing your material, practice
techniques, and keeping a positive mental attitude. If you have never
seen Palmer perform, His is a must see act whenever you get the chance.
Besides being a great magician he is truly a nice guy. At 10:00 was the
Siegfried and Roy show at the Mirage.
Saturday started with a lecture by Roy Johnson at 10 AM. His lecture
notes and items he wanted to sell also had not arrived. Roy's magic is
fairly easy to learn. He did several effects including a card location
by stabbing a knife into a deck held together with rubber bands (two
methods were described). He performed the Nemo rising cards with no
explanation, and did a great routine where women's bangle bracelets
link together while threaded onto a cord in various ways. Roy's books
were available for purchase out Joe Steven's dealer area. (Also here on
the MAGIC! book fundraiser) My personal favorite is his book "Silver
Special"
At 11:30 Mark and Greg Wilson held a special session and showed
vintage video tape of "The Magic Land of Alakazam" and other shows by
Mark Wilson. Memorabilia was offered for sale and They announced a one
day sale of used illusions to be held Saturday March 30 at Mark Wilson
Productions in Hollywood. For more info give them a call at
(818)980-3311. Tell them you heard about it here and maybe we can get
them to join us on MAGIC!
At 1:30 was the Lance Burton Variety Show. Lance did an Artist's
Dream illusion, there was a very funny juggler and John Calvert came on
doing a dancing hankercheif and cigarette manipulations. He was very
careful to announce at the end that he did not smoke or encourage
anyone to. Barklay Shaw did a very good routine with marionettes. As he
said he creates the grandest illusion- that of life itself.
This show was followed by them awards presentation which others have
already talked about.
At 4PM was a session on Creativity and Mircle Workers with Jim
Steinmeyer and John Gaughan. This discussion quikly turned into the
ethics discussion we have been having here on MAGIC! When asked what
reference materials an aspiring illusion builder should get the answer
was a quick "There are ONLY four books- Magic & Stage Illusions by
Hopkins, Garrett, My Magic by David Devant and the Robert Harbin Book"
After this was scheduled a farewell mixer and at 10:00 was the
"Folies-Bergere" show which includes Lance Burton.
The best part of the Desert Magic Seminar was meeting those of you
that were in attendance. I wish more MAGIC! members had worn their
badges so they could be more easily identified. My apologies to those
that were there that I didn't get a chance to talk with. I hope we can
all get together again next year.

Re: OREO AUDITIONS
Nabisco and Oreo cookies are having open auditions for magicians on
April 9th from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM with registration starting at 8:00 AM.
The job is for an 8 week gig with Nabisco performing in-store OR an
Opportunity to perform with Harry Blackstone Jr. The auditions will be
held at the Magic Castle and the rules are FIVE (5) MINUTES of magic
incorporating an Oreo Cookie into the performance. 18 or over. No
profanity, vulgarity or "decidedly dangerous" magic. For information
and pre-registration call 1-800-MAGIC93. DO NOT CALL THE MAGIC CASTLE!
They will just give you the 800 number. The name of the promotion is
"Unlock the Magic" with a graphic of an Oreo being twisted open. Best
of luck.
These are being held in a few other cities I have heard. I would
imagine that one SHOULD NOT do the broken and restored cookie but
incorporate some of that filling into the acthe filling is their
whole gimmick. Just a thought.

Those were the days.

Re: PEOMS
I was asked at the DMS why I hadn't written a peom (sic)
lately. I wonder myself. Is it because I've gotten bogged down in
the humdrum or is my head above the clouds? I'm too high to see,
so with my feet firmly planted in the ground and a bag of
fertilizer here goes....
There once was a Magician from MASS
Who had a big hole in his pass. (sorry)
Magicians could see
Cause he lifted his knee
To cover the obvious flash.
At first the Magician was blue,
And wondered what Vernon would do.
But he got down and hunkered
And thought, I'll get bunkered!
And practice til I get it down pat.
So he cleaned out a room in his house
BuZbook shelves with cubboards to match
And then he moved in
With collection in hand
And stayed there and never came out.
- Much time passes -
Well, the magician he died in that room
His poor wife cried in the gloom
Until one day she looks
At the price of those books
And moved to Hawaii with her poodle groomer.

Re: THE RIGHT KEY
I've rediscovered a great trick quite by a lucky
accident. You remember the trick "The Spooky Key" where a key
turns slowly (hopefully) on your palm.
The accident was finding the perfect key after 30 years.
It was an old hotel key from the State Hotel in Chicago back when
keys were keys. When I saw the key I knew I had finally found it.
Would be interested in exchanging ideas on this,
especially any subtle techniques to retard the "fall" after the
key passes the top of the arc. Am trying to get the key to "spin"
laterally in my palm after the rotation, but wow...
Any thoughts would be appreciated, as they've got me
confined to the cold east wing again and Curley (my dog pal) has
figured out Card Warp already and has threatened to chew up my
other shoe if I don't learn a new trick.

Re: DESERT SEMINAR
(Note: This is a 3-part message that duplicates the
file called VEGAS, filed a few days ago. This is part
1.) This was my third Stevens convention in the last
four years, and I had one of the best times ever. I'm
taking this opportunity to add some personal
observations to the excellent reports already filed by
Lichtman, Biro, and Crabb. This is by no means a
complete report, just a few of the things that stood
out for me.
**
Great Lectures -- In the order in which I saw them:
(1) Lou Lancaster. Lou lectured at Gary Darwin's magic
club meeting on Wednesday night. (Note: thanks to
MAGIC! for letting me know where to find this. I would
have missed it otherwise.) I haven't seen Lou perform
since the old days at the Magic Castle, when the "big
stage" was in the Haunted Wine Cellar. He is still in
top form. For those who don't know him, Lou does
difficult manipulation -- split fans, multiple coin
rolls, etc. Of the practical stuff he showed us (the
hard manip is over my head), a color changing billiard
ball and a rope cut were outstanding. Legends in
attendance at this lecture included Jimmy Grippo
(despite Tabby's mention of Jimmy's being mugged, I
thought he looked great, he seemed to be feeling OK and
holding up better at this late hour than I was, and he
was performing nonstop), Johnny Paul, and Joseph White.
The latter is a really nice guy and is performing in
the King Arthur dinner show at the Excalibur. (2) Juan
Tamariz. For me, Tamariz was the "draw" that brought
me to this year's convention, and I wasn't
disappointed. I skipped the Roy Johnson lecture and
watched Tamariz twice. Baffling card material and a
wild and funny performing persona. Tamariz didn't
explain everything he did in the lecture. I don't know
if others were disappointed with this, but I thought it
was fine. It's nice to be fooled for a change. (3)
Mark Wilson. Joe Stevens featured Mark and Co. a
couple of years ago, but much was lost in the scale of
the Tiffany Ballroom. This year's more intimate
setting, with strategically placed monitors, served
better to bring back memories of The Magic Land of
Allakazam. Mark is a great guy who truly loves magic.
(Some 15 years ago, I was sitting near him at an IBM
convention in San Diego; we were both WAY in the back
of the room, and Harry Blackstone was performing.
-Harry had just done the vanishing bird cage and was
walking off stage, his hand extended, for "another
cage." This bit clearly delighted Mark. It made me
feel great to see that the big names still enjoy seeing
things done well, that they are neither jealous nor
jaded.) Thanks, Mark, for the memories. (4) Jeff
Hobson. Jeff scored well as emcee of one of the
contest shows. If any cad goes away and steals
something from this convention, I suspect he will steal
Jeff's egg bag routine (lots of crazy sound effects,
and then he repeats the routine in slow motion, with
the sound slowed down). As a lecturer, his persona
couldn't have been more different from his stage
persona -- serious about comedy, and knowledgeable on
his subject of what it takes to succeed in comedy
clubs. He admitted that he had to drop a chair
levitation from his act because it blew people away --
the result was awe, not laughs. (5) Mike Rogers and
Dick Ryan. Talking on trade shows, Mike and Dick
repeated much of their excellent advice of two years
ago. This session was invaluable to anyone wanting to
enter this lucrative field. (6) Johnny Ace Palmer.
Wow! First his full act, to a standing ovation, and
then a lecture that covered such topics as how to
routine your material to get a standing ovation. Super
lecture notes; if you missed the lecture, try to buy a
copy from Joe or Johnny. (7) John Gaughan and Jim
Steinmeyer. On creativity, this lecture from two of
the best was attended by some of the bigger names in
the field. Great stories from these two. I found John
Gaughan's comment on overexposure interesting. He said
that it is only magicians who complain about, for
example, too many zig zags. For a layman, the
"recognition factor" will work to the performer's
advantage. A layman will nudge his companion and say,
"This is a great trick. Watch this!"
**
WORST SCHEDULING -- Holding the Jeff Hobson and Mike
Rogers/Dick Ryan lectures at the same time. If you're
wondering how I reviewed them both, I zipped back and
forth between them, like Superman, trying to catch the
meat of each. It was interesting how similar both the
questions and answers were in the two sessions.

(Part 2, VEGAS)
DO YOUR OWN THING -- One of my favorite parts of any
Stevens convention is the Thursday afternoon "Informal
Close-up Bull Session," in which attendees are allowed
five minutes in the spotlight. This year's session was
put together by Roger Klause. The best trick of the
afternoon was that it was emceed by Karrell Fox, as
Karrell had suffered a heart attack only a few weeks
earlier. DEDICATION! A FEW highlights: (1) One of
the French magicians (Henry Mayo) did several great
effects, including a 4 coins through a book held up off
the table, and a spoon bending in a paper bag. (2)
Crazy Paul. I love the wacko acts that work this spot.
Two years ago, a guy came out and threw a live mouse
into a blender full of ice cream, revved the thing up,
and then drank the milk shake that had turned red
before our eyes. This year, Crazy Paul came out and
ATE A PEPSI CAN. A lot of the performers were selling
the tricks they did. Crazy Paul walked off and said,
"You can buy my trick at your local soda machine." (3)
Amazing Edward. Did fire eating, followed by
impressions that strayed pretty far into the blue
region. I was cracking up, but knew that much of the
audience would be offended. Karrell was not amused.
"That was AMAZING, Edward," he said. (4) Steve
Fearson. Did a floating cigarette that was the hit of
the afternoon. Quite different from the John Kennedy
method. Steve can do this at very close range, which
he did repeatedly in the dealer room.
**
As a personal note, I performed my card stab routine on
this show, which has more or less become my signature
trick in the Card Trick World. Judging from comments
afterward, it fooled a few people. I regret, however,
that it seemed to throw off Roy Johnson a bit, who had
to follow me with a more traditional card stab of his
own. Overall (and excluding myself from any credit
here), this was one of the best of these sessions I've
seen. All but one or so performers managed to stick to
the time limit (it's amazing how many guys don't know
how long 5 minutes is), and there were no weak acts at
all. Thanks to Roger and Karrell for a fun afternoon.
**
WORST CASTING -- Using IBM prez Mike Ellis and SAM prez
Margaret Dailey as emcees for one of the contest shows.
I don't want to be too much of a curmudgeon here,
because these are both REALLY NICE PEOPLE, and they
didn't do all that bad a job. BUT . . . the reason I
attend the Stevens convention and avoid the IBM and SAM
events is that I can't stomach the fraternal mentality
and hoopla that inevitably accompany them. In this
show, for example, they paraded some lady on stage who
had just willed a considerable fortune to the IBM and
SAM. Nice of her, but boring. Michael Finney was in
the audience on this occasion. He is a nice guy too,
but he is also ENTERTAINING. I wish Joe would have
hired him to emcee. I was not alone in this opinion.
**
SECURITY -- Let me get all the negative comments out of
the way, while I'm at it. You must wear your badges at
these events to prevent anyone from sneaking in under
the tent, so to speak. It's only fair. But . . . the
guys who serve as guards (and I'm speaking of magicians
here, not the uniformed guards who worked the Tiffany
Ballroom) should have SOME idea of who people are.
When a guard questioned Charles Penton, I thought, OK,
Charles is perhaps not that well known. But when
another guard hassled Harry Blackstone, and the same
guy hassled Tamariz, I couldn't help but wonder where
they found this guy.
**
CONTESTS -- OK, back to the fun stuff! I never succeed
in picking political candidates, and in the past I've
never succeeded in picking the winners of the Stevens
affair. Once I was so far off that I began to wonder
if it wasn't rigged. This time, I picked the winners
exactly in 1-2-3 order (Michaels, Hart, Bass). If
you've never been to a Stevens affair, I should mention
that you will see some of the most original magic in
the world in this contest. All the acts are screened
in advance, and weak acts simply aren't allowed in.
Mike Michaels' mechanical magician act has come a long
way since I saw him a couple of years back. Novelty or
"gimmick" acts don't often win magic contests (even if
they manage to stir up lots of positive comment), and
I'm pleased that he had the courage to persist with the
act and perfect it to this level. Chris Hart was VERY
close, in my opinion, and Jonathan Bass was also
strong. (I thought Bass should have won it all two
years ago, with a different act. Bill Larsen concurred
in GENII.)
**
FUNNIEST LINE OF THE CONVENTION -- Siegfried's line
upon admiring John Calvert's beautiful female
companion. Wouldn't really be nice for me to repeat it
here.

Re: DESERT SEMINAR
(Part 3, VEGAS)
BEST DEALER ITEMS -- (1) Steve Fearson's floating
cigarette. This sold like crazy when he began demoing
it. (2) Henry Mayo's "Jewel." A gold chain magically
links to a bracelet. This fooled me.
**
MISSED OPPORTUNITIES -- (1) The Hawaiian Tropic Beauty
Contest was going on Friday night, adjacent to our
convention. Lots of young girls with great tans
running about in bikinis. Would have liked to have
attended their session. One of their honchos stepped
into our dealer room to check it out. I told him that
his convention looked like more fun than ours. "It
is," he said. (2) Don Alan showed up the last day,
just as I was splitting for a dinner date and Melinda's
show. Wish I could have met him, or at least watched
him work. (3) Michael Finney was headlining at
Bally's. Wish I could have seen him work. Just not
enough days in the week. (4) Ditto the King Arthur
dinner show at Excalibur. This is a wild medieval
dinner show with live jousting on horseback. Everyone
who attended raved about it. (But I DID see the
terrific black art puppet show at Excalibur. Hope Jay
Marshall caught it.)
**
IMPROMPTU SESSIONS -- One of the highlights of any
convention is dropping in on small clusters of
magicians who are killing each other with closeup
miracles. At past conventions, I've especially enjoyed
it when Larry Jennings is at the center of such events.
Somehow, I missed Larry this time, even though he was
there. But I did see: (1) John Calvert. John was
doing vanishing and reappearing coins from a
spectator's sleeve. He did this to two magicians and
copped both their watches in the process. A girl
walked by, he called her over, "hypnotized" her arm,
and then bent it up like a pretzel. Very weird effect.
Then, John had a magician hold a stack of coins on his
outstretched palm -- quarter, penny, nickel, dime,
quarter, in that order. He told the magician he would
grab the quarters as the magician tried to close his
hand fast. Slap! The magician opened his clenched
fist, and all that was left were the penney and nickel.
John repeated this several times and never missed.
(2) Tamariz and Chris Kenner. Chris is the most
skilled magician currently based in the Indianapolis
area, and he was out to impress Tamariz. I'm sure he
did, with an extraordinary display of coin and card
effects that he made look so easy. In turn, Tamariz
treated us to a series of effects even stronger than
those in the lecture. This session was a real
highlight, and it's a shame only 6 or 7 magicians
witnessed it. It occurred late Saturday night in the
lounge area of the Tropicana.
**
BIGGEST THRILLS -- In order: (1) Sharing some time
with Melinda after her Saturday night show. Several
other magicians in attendance, including Chris Hart and
Jade. Melinda is a very gracious and charming young
lady. (2) Attending Melinda's 8:00 Wednesday show and
10:30 Saturday show. I'll upload a more detailed (and
unabashedly biased) review of these shows at a later
date. (3) Siegfried and Roy's show. I saw them years
ago at the MGM, and more recently at the Frontier.
Neither of those shows prepared me for what they are
doing now at the Mirage. The current show so
transcends all previous magic shows, indeed all
previous theater, that it is difficult to describe what
it is like to be there. It's something like being
inside a science-fiction movie. Or inside science-
fiction or fantasy itself. Kudos and admiration for
all involved. Don't come to Vegas without seeing this
show, no matter how much you think it costs. (4) Lance
Burton's new illusions. In one (the artist's dream) a
girl appears from an easel. She is wearing a white
cape and hood. She walks right over to Lance, kisses
him, and wham! She's gone! All that is left is the
cape and hood. In the second, Lance vanishes a girl in
a giant phonograph. Then he turns around, rips his
shirt open, and he has breasts and a glittering blue
bra and -- what the hell??? Just as you realize what
has happened, that one of the female dancers has
replaced Lance, a whistle rings out from the audience,
and a spot hits Lance in the middle of the audience.
Usually, you can see a transformation coming a mile
away (the magician dons a full motorcycle helmet,
etc.). I never saw this one coming, couldn't even
believe my eyes at first when it did.
**
BIG THANKS TO -- In no special order: (1) Joe Stevens
for putting this on. (2) Lance Burton for putting
together the Lance Burton Variety Show (all the acts
were great). (3) Bonnie Saxe and Hardeen, for the
comps to the Saturday night show. (4) Melinda, for
being so generous with her time and her new posters.
**
AND OF COURSE -- It was a pleasure to meet all the
MAGIC! BBS members who showed up. I thoroughly enjoyed
the scheduled session, and learned a lot.

Just spoke with Johnny Thompson about the "incedent" at the
Castle the other night with Rich Marrota.
As good friend Max Maven stated, "it has been resolved". John got
together with Rich and his wife, apologised, they spent some time
together and John came up with another presentation THAT FITS
RICH BETTER for the Messy Bird... and now, no longer resembles
John's presentation -- which IS HIS SIGNATURE piece!
Fortunately, it only took a couple of days and from what John
says the two of them are closer than before, and both understand
where the other is coming from far better.
John made a couple of funny comments... (he had punched a hole in
the wall backstage -- which someone said they should preserve
with a sign alongside saying "Don't mess with Tomsoni!") that
Tony Georgio came in and said, "John I hear you pulled a Tony
Georgio the other night!" This refers to the night TG took a
swing at me after I had asked him to quit butting in on a
conversation I was having with someone!
Had a great chat this am with Michael Weber. He's coming North
for the PCAM being held right here in my own backyard June 19-22
in Concord. I guess I can afford to go to that one! Guess we'll
have to link up and show a few of the local magi how to get onto
MAGIC!
Oh, finally got a clear line and logged on to MAGIC-NL, in
Holland, and left some messages. Nice 'n easy set up, a little
slow for the long distance, but I would guess I could work it
over changing the Params and cut down on some of the screen
messages with a little practice.
Still trying to find a couple of books, FARO EXPOSED and FARO, by
Blair. The former published by the Police Gazette in 1882 -- even
the loan so I could make some notes, or a copy would be fine.

Management/attitude will prevent anyone from ever touching your props.
If you use any set ups, you should use some kind of prop earlier on
that they WILL want to grab... you then slap their hand... IN FUN...
and say something like, "do you touch the fiddle when Heifitz plays?"
Only don't use that line -- it is in use -- but come up with your own
example. After that you will be OK and can set a stacked deck anywhere
and it will be left along.

It's amazing how little of his work seems to be sleight-of-hand.
I really enjoyed meeting him and watching him perform his miracles at
the Castle. His comedic sense, like his magic, crosses all barriers of
language. The sad lack of mass-media outlets for magic performers in
this country deprives the general public. They would embrace Tamariz.
For that matter, there a quite a number of home-grown, made-in-the-USA
magical artists whose careers would take off if only the public could
get to see their work!
This MUST change!

Re: DESERT SEMINAR
Pete -- OK, here's the line. Hope S&R don't mind my
repeating it. It's at the awards ceremony. John
Calvert and his gorgeous female companion are walking
off stage. Siegfried stares longingly at her, then
turns to the audience and says, "In my old age, I think
I'm going to change. Do you think it's too late?" Big
laugh from audience. Then Roy interjects, "It's NEVER
too late." Another big laugh. Great delivery from
both. You have to love these guys. I should have
mentioned that they were already on a roll. S&R have
worked out a tight, almost Smothers-Brothers routine in
which Roy monopolizes the microphone and Siegfried
can't get a word in edgewise. Very funny stuff.
By the way, if you are passing comments along to
Joe Stevens, mention that having sandwiches available

Re: MELINDA
(This is the first of a 3-part message that duplicates
a file called MELINDA, based on my having seen her show
at the Sahara on 20 and 23 March. This is part 1.)
**
MELINDA REVIEW
**
Dai Vernon once wrote that, to be successful, a
magician should have sex appeal. By that criterion,
Melinda is surely the most successful magician to have
ever graced the art. By any other criterion, she is
still one of the most successful magicians ever, having
now headlined for years at major Las Vegas hotels, and
at a still tender age. Indeed, her sex appeal and
dancing abilities are so strong that it is easy to
overlook her status as one of America's finest
magicians, the authoritative mistress of a whirlwind
magic and variety show that whizzes by in an
all-too-short hour and a half.
**
Vital Stats: The show transpires at the Sahara at 8:00
and 10:30 nightly (I'm not certain which night is dark;
at the Sands it was Monday). Cost is $19.75, drinks
not included. Inside, drinks are fetch your own. Nice
bartenders, and when I was there one spoke Spanish, to
the delight of the Spanish-speaking gentleman in line
beside me. Smoking is permitted (boo). The stage is
small (Melinda later said that the backstage area is
also small), which is no doubt tough on the cast, but
the setup makes it easy for the audience to see. Good
lighting, and a combination of both live and recorded
music.
**
Changes Since the Landmark: Melinda has added two
large cats, and the show is no longer topless. Both
changes are improvements.
**
The Show: A voiceover announces that Melinda is
dedicating her first number to the troops returning
from the Gulf. The dancers (6 girls, 4 boys) march on
in soldier costumes, with a large American flag as a
backdrop. Strong opening dance number. I like
Melinda's dancers. They all look great and work hard,
and their enthusiasm is a definite asset to the show.
Melinda appears from a flash frame and begins with
a flurry of magic -- dove productions, doves to large
white bird, etc. She is wearing a full length black
tights outfit, with one leg bare, all the way up. A
cage is brought on from which she produces a large cat.
(My notes say she produced a tiger on Wednesday and a
male lion on Saturday.) She reaches in and pets it.
My favorite effect: She holds up a full-light seance
cloth, wiggles behind it momentarily, and then drops
the cloth to reveal that the black tights outfit has
vanished. She is now wearing a wisp of a silver bikini
costume (the lower half is tantalizingly spare) and
holding aloft a colorful parrot. No pauses! She
climbs into a box that is hoisted aloft. The box drops
apart, Melinda has vanished, and she reappears from the
audience. Except for the cat production, this opening
sequence is the sequence she performed on Dick Clark
(and which I am lucky to have a tape of!). So much
happens so fast, to strong music, that this is probably
the strongest sequence in the show. And the show has
barely started!
In an offstage conversation between Melinda and
Gene Kelly, a movie of the highlights of dance is
introduced, moving from dancing among primitive
cultural groups to the best of movie and MTV
performances. This brings on the dancers for a second
strong number.
First variety act: Los Latin Cowboys, introduced
as being from Argentina. They came on playing drums,
and switched to an act that featured spinning balls on
strings. Sounds weird in print, but effective in the
close quarters of the Sahara showroom. Their humor
centered on one of the cowboys flirting with one of the
men in the audience. They got laughs out of this and
were popular with the audience on both nights that I
saw the show.
The Jungle Number: Melinda is carried on wearing
a sort of jungle body stocking. She performs Pierced
(also called Impalement), where she is impaled on a
spike on a rotating ball. Her costume seems far too
skimpy to accomplish this. Next, she lights a fire at
the top of a large cooking pot, extinguishes the flame,
and then produces a tiger from the pot. Magically, I
thought this was the weakest illusion in the show, but
I don't know how else the tiger could have been
produced at this point (production cages are used
twice, elsewhere). Still -- screenwriting classes
teach that good movies are really pastiches of special
moments, and the sight of Melinda leading this huge
tiger in a lap around the stage was indeed one of the
special moments of the show.

Re: MELINDA
(MELINDA, part 2)
Vegemagic: A man from the audience is selected to
help out and winds up with his neck in a guillotine.
Melinda is great with a microphone and gets a lot of
laughs with this routine. She uses a sort of Chrissie
voice for this. The guy from the audience gets a kiss
on his way back to the seat, and all the other guys in
the audience are figuring out where they should sit the
next time they see the show.
Second variety act: Anthony Gatto. Still very
young, Anthony has grown up with Melinda's act.
Remember being in high school? Anthony has done two
shows a night with Melinda throughout his high school
years. I had the pleasure of speaking briefly with
Anthony two years ago. He's a nice kid and an awesome
juggler. He does juggling straight and finishes by
juggling 7 clubs at once.
The dancers are back in blue costumes. Melinda is
produced from a light box, always one of my favorite
illusions. She follows this with her zombie routine,
and sensational body English. This segues right into
the witch number, in which a witch seems to overpower
Melinda, entrances her, and causes her to rise (Asrah).
The witch causes the floating figure to vanish, then
spins around and turns out to be Melinda herself. A
very nice switch.
The dancers are back in the "Hot, hot, hot"
number, and then Melinda is led in on a beautiful white
horse. This is another nice moment. In the S&R show,
Roy also has a great moment on a horse, with the horse
dancing on the large Mirage stage, but he doesn't look
nearly as good on a horse as Melinda does. The horse
is led behind a sheet, and a light casts the
silhouettes of trainer and rider on the sheet. The
shadows diminish, and the sheet is removed to reveal a
miniature trainer and horse (pony?). This is the
illusion that, according to INSIDE MAGIC, was recently
bashed by a writer for the LOS ANGELES TIMES. OK, it's
not THAT baffling, but it looks more magical to me than
the vanish in the S&R show, and there isn't a lot else
one can do with a horse given the scale of the theater.
(Actually, I do have a few ideas, but I'm not an
illusionist, and it's more a problem for the John
Gaughans of the world.) If I were to criticize, I
would criticize the vanish less than the fact that the
illusion doesn't directly involve Melinda. She is the
star of this show, and her involvement is critical.
Elsewhere in this segment, Melinda performs a sword
suspension on one of the male dancers. This looks
great at close range, and it's nice that no one else in
the big time is currently using this illusion.
The final variety act: two men from Taiwan
(sorry, I didn't get their names), with a third
offstage on the drums. This is a sort of a martial
arts/tumbling act that might have made it to the Ed
Sullivan Show. First, one of the men opposes the force
of a long metal rod that is being pushed against his
neck. Then the seemingly solid metal rod is wrapped
into tight circles around one of their necks (an
ultimate choker collar), and unwrapped again. As a
finale, they do diving somersaults through a spinning
hoop laced with knives. These guys pour a lot of
energy into their act, as do all of Melinda's variety
acts.
The dancers are back for a wild west number in which
Melinda is fired from a cannon into a crystal box.
This is a strong illusion with an effective switch, as
all she dons to pull it off is a black Lone Ranger
(Zorro is a better description) mask.
The final segment is a French can can number,
great for the dancers. One of them is wrapped up in a
sheet, then spins back out and becomes Melinda. Her
final illusion is the production of a large dog from a
cage. There is some very astute thinking here, as
others might have been tempted to save, say, the tiger
for the final production. But this big cuddly dog (I
think it's an Afghan, but I'm not very good at dog
breeds) is so lovable that the audience forms an
immediate emotional attachment to it. There is a happy
sigh, as when Johnny Ace Palmer produces his baby

thank yous and hand shakes with members of the
audience. She exudes affection for her audience, and
the audience responds in kind.

Re: MELINDA
(MELINDA, part 3)
Comments: I love this magic show, and I know what it
must have felt like for my little sisters, some years
ago, to have a celebrity crush. In their lecture at
the Stevens convention, John Gaughan and Jim Steinmeyer
pointed out how difficult it is for an illusionist to
be the focus of the show, to not let the illusions
(props) themselves take over. No such problem here.
When Melinda is on stage, she rivets attention on
herself. When she is not on stage, you sit there and
ache for her to return. If I were to suggest any
changes, it would be to have more of Melinda and less
of the variety acts. She is certainly strong enough to
carry the show herself, a la Copperfield or Henning.
I'd also propose a souvenir photo book. But these are
the selfish musings of a sometime member of the
audience. As to any technical changes that come to
mind as an armchair illusionist, I might move the cage
production of a cat to the jungle number (replacing the
cooking pot prop), but I don't know what illusion I
would substitute at the top of the show (and I DO think
it smart of Melinda to have one there, to establish
that she is an illusionist). Again, these are only
minor differences with a show I greatly admire, a show
that keeps coming at you from the moment it begins.
**
After the show: As I mentioned in my notes on the
Desert Seminar, I was extremely privileged to get to
spend some time with Melinda after Saturday night's
performance, along with several other magicians,
including Chris Hart and Jade, and a funny comic
magician named Bonnie Bitch (don't know if that's how
he spells his first name, but the last was in
rhinestones on his lapel). Also a young impressionist
who had worked with Melinda before, and who did a funny
piece doing her lines as Katherine Hepburn. OK, I'm
sitting there feeling rather foolishly like a
consummate tourist, but I'm observing as well as
participating, and I soon realize that this is why we
are ALL there. There is a stack of new posters to
sign, and plenty of silver paint pens to sign them
with. And it's not just me who wants a signed poster
from Melinda, but everyone in the room, even old
friends of hers. Some wanted two. Melinda is blessed
with (and works hard for) that star quality that makes
you want to leave with some piece of her, some token of
having been a part of the experience of having
witnessed her magic. It's definitely something larger
than big illusions and skimpy costumes. (In his live
shows, Copperfield has this quality too, and I think
this is why he will sell posters himself after a show,
and sign them, and meet as many of the audience as he
can.) In turn, Melinda seemed genuinely flattered by
the attention, and she expressed a special interest in
Jade's act. She exhibited a keen sense of humor and
the natural warmth that comes across on stage. I have
mentioned special moments above, and for me it was nice
to have been a part of this one, to witness a genuine
appreciation of a star in our special field of
entertainment by others who love it as much as I do.

Melinda is one of my favorites too, Steve. Her act radiates
pure energy from begining to end. It is exciting, upbeat, and
HARD WORK. I do disagree with some of your conclusions,

weak endings. I'd like to see a stronger close. As to the

Re: MAGIC-17
The seventeenth set of MAGIC! messages - #8000 (Mar. 3, 1991)
to #8499 (March 17, 1991) - has been transferred to a
downloadable file. The file is named MAGIC-17.TXT. This
means that you can now go to the file area, download this file,
and read the seventeenth volume of messages off-line. For
those who know how to use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing
files, there is a compressed version of this same file. It is
called MAGIC-17.ZIP and is less than 1/2 the size of the
full-text version.
This volume includes some good effects and tips on handling.
Among the effects: Stan Lake's "Watch," and a variation on it
by Arnaud Van Delden (credited to Little George Rumsey). More
details on David Lichtman's "Guillotine of Death," and some
hints and tips on Egg Bag routines, including Tabby Crabb's
Glitter version. There are several firsts: the 1st public
MAGIC! message from Matt Matsuyama in Japan, the first
"more than half-way around the World" MAGIC! connection
(Japan to L.A. to Holland), and the 10,000 call to MAGIC!
And a wide-range of conversational "threads:" The "art" in
front of the Magic Castle, the beginning of the "Bicycle Card
Quality" investigation, more on women in magic, Tabby Crabb's
review of "The Man Who Was Erdnase" (Whaley/Gardner/Busby) and
his report on meeting "Two Finger Red" in the early 1900's.
There were also reports on an informal MAGIC! luncheon at the
Magic Castle (with Michael and Hanna Ammar, Kent Cummins, and
David Luther, among others) and Charlie Randall's visit with
Tabby Crabb and his trip to Washington, D.C. The list of 1991
Academy of Magical Arts Award winners is also in this file.
Not only will transferring these messages to a file make it
easier for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will
make the search for new messages easier and faster.

Re: COINS????
Here's one for some brainy coin man out there!
I have just found (without instructions) the following coin set.
1: Ungaffed Kennedy Half
2: Ungaffed English Penny
3: Ungaffed Chinese Coin (brass with hole in center)
4: GAFFED COIN: Shows English Penny on One Side, other side is
TAIL SIDE OF Kennedy Half -- it is a shell unit, and from the
Kennedy side it comes apart showing a chinese coin with hole in
it. That coin (chinese one side has part of the Kennedy on other
side).
Need to know the name of set. And what the routine/effect might
be. Any idea of the value?
Many thanks.
PS: Any one know what the coin "Silve Sister" goes with? It is a
Kennedy Half with a hold drilled in it. I seem to also have a
Chinese coin, same size, same sized hole.
What year did they stop making ALL SILVER KENNEDY HALVES?
Is the Sun and Moon in print?
What a quiz. Hope someone can assist me on this. As I find things

My father in law is very big on his religious activities now a days.
Gives Bible studies etc. I was supposed to give a small magic show to
the family for Easter and although I know there are lots of tricks
which are used by Christian magicians, I didn't know any. So after
giving it much thought I remembered a card trick I had seen performed
which has a triple denouement. The card they choose is a different
color than all the rest, they cut to the only duplicate of it in the
deck and the name is written on the inside of the card box. Anyway, I
don't know if this is a marketed item, I just figured out a way to do
it. The story I have to go with it is what really makes it a terrific
trick to be shown to anybody who shall I say, is real happy or proud to
be a Christian. He has seen every trick I know and he raves that this
is the best one ever. If at least a couple of you are interested I
will write up a detailed description of it. It will be lengthy but
quite simple to perform once you learn it. I showed this one trick to
the local Postmaster and he said he wants me to perform at the next
Postal banquet. For all he knows this may be the only trick I know!

A couple weeks ago, you were talking about renting a magic show with
props and video. Since most magicians (except you and I of course) are
completely lacking in originality and are unbelieveably lazy, how about
putting together a show of self-working box tricks which are sound
activated. The magus(?) receives the props and a sound tape along with
a profusely illustrated set of instructions which makes the poster
which comes with Daryl's rope routine seem miniscule. Then all that the
magus(?) has to do is set things up and when the MC announces his act,
he starts the sound and sits in the audience and watches himself
perform. It might sell.

Re: COINS????
The coin set you describe is absolutely, definitely a version of
Copper, Silver, Brass. I have the more usual version (Kennedy Half,
English Penny, Centavo), but have frequently seen the set you
described mentioned in print. I'm trying to remember where, but I
don't know... It doesn't really matter, as a good CSB routine should
work with minimal adjustment with your set -- I imagine you have to
keep the gaffed Chinese coin with the hole on top of another coin --
unless the gaffed hole shows flesh-color. Actually I'm curious -- what
do you see through the gaffed Chinese coin? Lemme know.
-
As far as routines go, there are zillions of CSB routines around. I'm
pretty sure there's one in Kaufmann's Dingle book, and right now I'm
staring at an _excellent_ CSB routine in John Bannon's recent lecture
notes.
-
As far as Sun and Moon -- I'm almost sure the routine is available in
the full format (not Dover version) of Bobo. Lemme check...
-
Yes, here it is, on pg 440 of my 1980 revised Magic Inc. edition.

Re: COINS????
No. The gaff, when nested, shows a Tail side Kennedy Half on one side,
English Penny on other side. When opened, you have Chinese on ONE side,
with hole, Parts of the Kennedy on other side, with hole thru. You only
show the chinese side. The Shell is English Penny one side, other side
has a lump that fits into the hole in chinese coin with the little
piece of the Kennedy half on it. Rest of set is non-gaffed, Eng Penny,
Half and Chinese coin. It is just like Double Copper and Silver gaff
in Bobo, credited to Conrad Haden. Just the Chinese replaces the
Mexican Peso. Makes it seem more impossible using a coin with a hole in
it! I can still remember being BAFFLED when Connie Haden showed it to
me. He then (after I bought) taught me the handling in Bobo... with the
switch at the end A KILLER!!!

Re: ON THE ROAD
Greetings from Greenville, South Carolina. Am wanderin'

Blythewood, S.C., and plan to be in Charlotte later this week
for the Auto Faire. Also plan to be back in Greenville in time

Did manage to download H&R3 and got my order in. RIchard said
I was on one line while another MAGIC! member was ordering
stuff from Charlie on another.
Fortunately, my tastes are pretty much pedestrian and obscure,
so I don't overlap with hardly anyone - but I did take a shot
at getting that double signed Blackstone. Alas, it was already
gone. Oh, well. Still got some good stuff.
Hmmmmm..... Wayne Powers has been giving me some ideas --

One question, Pete -- if you know so much about this coin set, THEN WHY
DID YOU ASK WHAT IT WAS!!
-
Actually, someone replied at some point in this message string as to
how much they'd like a set -- I checked a year-old Johnson products
catlogue, and they sell that set under "Copper, Silver, Brass." The
version we're all familiar with, with the Kennedy halk, English Penny
and Centavo, is marketed under "Two Copper & One Silver." Hm. I'm
confused. Oh well.
-
Also, I'm going to look up the CSB routine you referred to in Bobo.
Remember where it was? Ah, forget it, I'll peruse the book, it's been

philosophy of performing close-up magic, a piece on walk-around

Re: BUCFING'S LETTER
- Well, I've decided to go for it and to try to help
Bucfing Danut out with some stuff from the USA. If you don't know
what I'm talking about - I rarely do - look at page 331 of
current GENII (March-if you don't have it subscribe) and read the
letter from Bucfing. It would take a rotten (I do know some of
these, but fortunately not that many) soul to make up that
story....soooooz I've decided to put a MAGIC! care pkg together
and send it over.
- I figure books would be the most helpful. Stuff like the
Paul Osborne Illusion System books, etc would probably go over
well with them. I've decided to include a copy of Fischer's
Illustrated Magic and Dawes' The Great Illusionists as my gift to
the Romanian Magicians.
- Sooooo if any of you wanna help out (please read his
letter and judge for yourself) I'm putting a care pkg together
here at MAGIC! Hdq East and will send it out around the first of
May 1991.
- Send stuff (letters, photos, books, plans, whatever I'll
bet would be appreciated) here to me via US Postal:
TABMAN USA
Box 590
Charlotte Hall, MD 20622
and I'll take care of packing it up and sending it out to

imagine what it must be like for them without resources to
express themselves as I've been in dire straits myself.

The problem with Rogain is that once you're using it, you become afraid

Rikker.....
Glad you're still alive and kicking in Hotlana. Wanted to
let you in on whats going on with the Music City Conclave and
Magicians Symposium.
As you know, the date has been set for Jan 10,11,12 1992
and right now we're at Holiday Inn Vanderbilt. I thought about
moving it to Opryland Hotel, but the folks at the Holiday Inn are
much "more together" so I think we'll stick with them. They're
offering us a great room rate at around $55 per room - double or
single occupancy so if two people share a room its downrite
reasonable.
The big news today is that JOHNNY ACE PALMER has agreed
to perform & lecture as well as sit in on the Sat night Symposium
which Pete Biro will be hosting (sked permitting). Trying to work
out with Mr. Palmer to open the Conclave Fri nite with his
lecture and show so he'll be around the entire weekend which is
what we want.
The hotel is excl (I've stayed there before), they have a
great bar and restaurant and it's convenient to lots of other
restaurants, etc as well as being only a mile or so from the
Music Row area of Nashville.
Am beginning talks with The Nashville Network to have one
(or more) or the performers come in early to work the Ralph Emery
Show (Nashville Now) or maybe an Opry earlybird show on Friday.
I'm still bogged down here in MD with negotiations on the
property's medicinal spring water, but hope to have it all
settled soon.
Send me some photos of the new props you're building when
you get a chance.

Responses to Private messages ARE automatically Private. BUT
if you aren't actually replying to something, then there is a
"prompt" for Private-Yes/No.
A Private message is identified by an asterisk (*) next to the

always look at a message you sent to see if the * is there.

Re: UPDATE
Greetings Y'all,
Just dragged myself out of the garage. Its midnight. I wanted to
check in and see whats happening as well as report the news from
the Wine Country Wizard.
1991 looks like the year we "Go for it". We always make plans at
the start of the year to see if we can move the act up to the next
plateau of quality.
Some of the things we are now doing include dance lessons two
nights a week. Its nice to have discovered that I have two left
feet. Someone call Rudy Coby please. I need someone to cut off my
legs.
We are also having all original music composed for the act. I am
reviewing the tapes now and am very excited knowing that our music
is going to be tailored to match the act completely. The studio
and I are considering doing a live music/magic act/light show in
the future. Could be great theatre if done corrctly.
Speaking of lights I am in the process of building a light system
for the show as well as various smoke and steam effects. Been
playing with the laser tube also and am designing some illusions
with lasers built in.
The new act will debut in six weeks and we will be taping it. If
anyone would like to view the new Wine Magic Act please let me
know and I might be able to get a video to you. I am always
interested in constructive feedback.

Re: PRACTICAL JOKE
I wuz going to send this to Tabman private... but it was so good, t
hought I would share it with all.
There is a particular book I have been trying to find for several
years. One came up at auction about five Years ago with a "minimum bid
of $350.00" and at the time I didn't even try. In the meanwhile I asked
Byron Walker, noted collector and book dealer, if he had the book. He
said, NO, MATTER OF FACT THERE WERE ONLY TWO KNOWN COPIES IN EXISTANCE,
ONE IN PRIVATE HANDS, THE OTHER "WAS" IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, BUT
AFTER THEY MICROFISCHED IT THEY THREW IT AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, fun seekers, I found out that I could scan th minute picture of
it's cover in the old auction catalog, and via the magic of my computer
printed it (albiet a fuzzy version) on my Laserjet.
I ran it thru the FAX machine to make it even fuzzier and had scribbled
a large note on the margin, saying "IS THIS THE BOOK YOU ARE LOOKING
FOR, PETE? IF SO IT IS YOURS!"
At the Oakland Magic Circle meeting tonight there was Dave Berry, with
his display selling used books. I tipped him off to the gag and left it
laying where Byron would see it.
When Byron spotted this... he S**T.... HE GASPED, HE NEARLY WENT
FAINT... HE bought the gag hook line and sinker!!!!! I spotted him
looking at it and grabbed it, folding it up and saying to Dave, "Dave,
gee... I told you that was private.... I didn't want anybody to see
it!" Byron was so caught.... you had to be there.... I couldn't let him
sweat and finally told him.

Re: BUCFING'S LETTER
Yeah, I hear you. I checked with UPS on airshipment to
Eastern Europe and it cost big $$. I'm drafting a letter to
Bucfing now and will send it out and wait for a reply. I'm in no
hurry to fall into some shaman's trap and know through reading
your magizine for 20+ (not saying how many the + is) years that
hoaxes do occur.
Will write Bucfing and await his reply before getting
serious about this but thought since I was sending anyway I'd
give other like minded individuals an opportunity to participate
in the exchange.
His letter has the ring of truth to it, but so does any
good magician's patter. I do know from the tv news that the folks
in eastern europe are hurting and I've always gotten myself into
these charitable type of doings. I'm the guy that the panhandlers
stop on the streets downtown outa everybody on the block looking
for a little help. I used to wonder about it but now I view it as
an opportunity to be helpful. Hell, I'm a bum too, just a lucky
one for sure.
Figure I can use this energy to either thwart MFers or
help somebody and I've found that the Laws of Karma give us back
what we give out......so its a somewhat selfish attitude on my
part if you look at it thata way.
You're a good one too, Dante....you ran the letter so you
know sometimes you have to take a chance. If it backfires we'll
probably never know and I sure won't blame you since you
obviously opperate from the same quadrant of the universal system
of disorder that I come from........my wife sez I'm from the
planet Zerkon III. Little does she know that I'm from The Dream
Forests of Nender (book I'm writing), a world children sometimes
visit in their dreams.
Keep up the good work............Rychyrd Hawk, The Dream

Re: PATTER
Can't get anybody to write any book reviews and I can't
read so what the heck. Figured I'd start a few rumors around town
so here go.
Heard a NW US book dealer bought 200 copies of K&G's
Conjurer's Reprints and is sitting on them waiting for the price
to go up. An east coast dealer is going to reprint the series
also (from the original plates) and sell them for $75 in paperbak
with an index which K&G didn't provide.
With so many attorneys in magic I hear the Academy of
Magical Arts is going to have recruiters at top law schools
starting in the spring of 1993.
L&L is going to reprint all of Walter Gibson's collected
writings in ONE VOLUME. They are taking advance orders now. The
prepublication price is $3,944 for the shadow edition which
contains more than 32,401 pages. Shipping costs are expected to
be high.
A handwritten Angelo Lewis manuscript has been unearthed
in a carriage house in Wales. A British one off artist has
reportedly stolen a copy and will be issuing it soon through a US
dealer. The heretofore unpublished work is titled "It's Later
Than You Think Jack."
A group of international woman magicians has incorporated
the Galactical Sisterhood of Magicians. Rumor has it that the
Magic Cyrcle is sueing for admittance on the grounds that men can
be sexy too. The court date hasn't been set yet, but the case
will be heard in a Swiss court.
There you have it. Rumors from The Mage of The Coole
Springs; reader of minds (mostly his own) and teller of fortunes
(at least 500 at last count).
* Any similarities between this fiction and actual fact is
coincidental and if the shoe fits wear it; if not, give it to my

I agree about private messages and in trying to keep
stuff out front even if you havta talk in code sometimes. As far
as the underworldians abounding in these parts the worst are the
One Eyed Slothful Quadeans who live under and around abandoned
tobacco barns and scrap rubber dumps. We had a scare from them

You've GOTTA see DOC EASON if theres any way you can. If
he's feeling good (never seen him feel bad) the place will rock.
He's one of the funniest guys on the planet doing magic today.
Doc is an example of a practiced performer who gives the
spectator the impression that its all impromptu and off the cuff.
Even the laff lines are calculated to perfection. He has worked
hard to be great. Also he's involved in projects around Aspen
which benefit the children of the area. The genuine article..a

Re: CHRISTIAN CONJURING
By popular demand (Three people) I will now give you my one and only
contribution to Christian conjuring. I have had tremendous success
with the presentation of this effect since it fits my presentational
style to a "T". Not necessarily the content, but the style. As I said
before in a previous message it is designed to be shown to people who
actively enjoy the Christian religion. On them, it has a tremendous
impact whereas others might find it insulting! Needless to say, use
discression.
Set up- In a blue backed deck have the King of Hearts on top, the King
of Diamonds 17th from the top, a RED BACKED King of Hearts 21st from
the top and the King of Spades 25th from the top. Place low numbered
spade of club cards on either side of the red backed king of hearts.
Of course you must make sure that the face of the red backed king of
hearts matches the faces of all the blue cards in the deck so it looks
like just another card. On the inside flap of the blue backed cards
case write- "You will choose the King of Kings, the King of Hearts".
It fits nicely in three lines. Place the set up deck into the case
with the face of the deck towards the flap of the case. This prevents
any possible flash of the red backed king when you take the cards out
of the case.
Presentation- Take the cards out of the case with the inside of the
case flap towards you so no one can see the writing on it. Place the
box to one side. At this point I do a false overhand shuffle by
cutting off about half or a little more than half of the deck,
injogging the first card and shuffling off the rest of the packet on
top. I call attention to this by saying "First I'll mix the cards up
a bit". This leaves you with the last half of the deck which was not
stacked now on top of the injogged card on top of the stacked portion
of the deck. I then lift my eyes from the cards to meet theirs and say
"I'm going to show you something like you have never seen before". At
this time their eyes will meet yours at which time you lift off the
injogged card and the mixed cards on top of it and deposit the stacked
portion of the deck on top of them; in essence cutting the deck. I
don't try to hide it, I just don't call attention to it.
Table the deck in front of your spectator and instruct him or her to
cut some cards off of the top- more than a few, but less than 20. I
then demonstrate by cutting off about a dozen cards and replacing them
back on top of the deck. I do this because some laymen don't know how
many cards 20 is. Tell them you will turn your back as they do this.
While your back or at least your line of vision is still turned away
tell them to QUIETLY count the cards down onto the table one at a time
so that you can't hear and to remember what number they counted.
When this is done you turn around and ask them once again if they
remember the number. What this has done is to place the blue backed
king of hearts from the top of the deck down to the bottom of the
packet they just counted. Straighten up the packet and place it to the
side and put the card case on top. Pick up the rest of the deck of
cards.
***YOU MUST NOW BE ABLE TO TALK AND SIMULTANEOUSLY DEAL OFF PRECISELY
20 CARDS IN THE FORM OF A QUESTION MARK WITHOUT IT LOOKING LIKE YOU ARE
COUNTING.***
The way I do it is to deal off five cards as I say a memorized line.
Doing this four times with four memorized lines give us our magic
number of 20. One card more or less and you will look mighty dumb!
If you have any doubt about it being precisely 20 cards then quickly,
mentally count them before proceeding.
As you deal the cards into the form of the question mark, you must have
your hand holding the deck of cards turned either downwards or at least
so the backs are away from the audience so they do not see the red
backed card as it comes off the deck.
My patter for dealing the cards is thus:
First five cards- This isn't so much a card trick as a lesson in life.
Second five cards- One of the big questions is "Who are we?"
Third five cards- Another question is "Where are we going"?
Last five cards- Another question is "How do we get there"?
Time your last word of each sentence to fall on the last card you deal
in each group. I briefly pause after each sentence.
As you can see, these from a big question. (Point to the cards as you
place the rest of the deck off to the opposite side of the spectators
packet and card case. Ask spectator who counted the cards he cut form
(from) the deck to remember that number. (That's why you asked him
twice to remember it) Have him count from the bottom of the question
mark which is the last card you dealt out, up to the card at that
numbered position. Give him a demonstration by saying "Let's say you
chose the number 6 (Or any other number as long as it is not the
correct number!)- simply count up six cards from the bottom and that
will be the card you choose. If there are other spectators have him
point to the card without touching it while your back is turned so all
can know what it is.
My patter runs like this-
All of these cards represent religous leaders, gods and prophetd down
through the centuries. They all claimed to have the answer, to know
the way, but who do we place our faith in? You have chosen one of
these. (Pick up the king of spades) You may have chosen this one. He
says that if you follow him he will give you more power and glory over
men than you could ever imagine. (Pause as you're holding the card)
But I don't think you chose him. (Turn it face down just to one side
of the question mark.) (Pick up the king of diamonds) You may have
chosen this one. He claims that if you follow him you will receive
wealth and material possessions far beyond your wildest dreams.
(Again, pause as you are holding the card. Turn it also face down with
the king of spades while saying-) But I don
But I don't think you chose him either. There is only one king who had
the whole world in his heart and I think you were wise to choose him.
(Slide out the red backed king of hearts still face up) Now what makes
him different from all the others? (Push together the other 19 cards,
turn them over, backs up and spread them out.) As you can see, all of
these other religious leaders are really all the same. But there is
only one (Pick up king of hearts) who loved you so much he sacrificed
himself and died for your sins (Turn over showing red back) so that you
might be saved. This red back is symbolic of his blood he shed for
you. (Pick up card case) This case which encompasses all of the cards
could be symbolic of the Father. Would you please read what is written
on the inside of the case. We have the Father, the Son, but what of
the Holy Spirit? (Pick up spectators packet) The card you freely cut
to- (Turn over packet) Completing the Trinity, the Father (Point to
case) the Son (Point to red backed king) and the Holy Spirit (Point to
King of hearts on bottom of packet. Make a sweeping gesture with
your hands and take your well deserved applause!
I hope some of you like this, I tied up our board a little over an
hour to put it on!

Well, I've switched from shampoo to super-glue. Only problem

makes me wonder if maybe Napoleon was using the stuff on his

Here's a sorta aside that might amuse you. Went to my 20th
high school reunion and won the award for traveling the
farthest to attend. When they called me up to accept it, the
jock who was running the show and who is now bald said, "Howcum
I'm bald and you still got all your hair?" I said, "It pays to
lead an active sex life." Crowd roared and he looked like I'd
definitely hit him where he, er, didn't live. Up comes 25th
reunion - a cruise to the Bahamas. Form has place for
grandchildren's names, etc. I sent in regrets, stating, "my
wife is 8-months pregnant and the doctor does not advise a
cruise at this time... P.S. - I still have all my hair."
Haven't heard from 'em about the 30th reunion yet, but our son
is now 2-1/2 years old.
Not sure what all this has to do with magic, 'cept hair
restorer and snake oil shows used to generally have a magic bit

then pick it up an hour later after the family was asleep.

Tabamous! You is great stuff!
You want book reviews? I'm about 1/3 of the way into "The Man
Who Was Erdnase" and going nuts! The detail is awesome!
Almost exact details of what he had for breakfast every day.
Will see if it holds up further in, but from your comments and
others, I presume it does.
Also just got (this morning) Jerry Mentzer's "Card to Wallet"
book. Quick look is good, but haven't really dug into it yet.
P.S. - Thanks for the fax check today. Hope you like the owl.

Re: NOW U C IT...
I am looking for Meir Yedid's gimmick/book/video set called "Now U C
It, Now U Don't". I've been to several local magic stores, most of
which sold out of it within 48 hours. Any of you magic store owners
have it in stock? If you do, please hold it for me, and post a note up
here. I will be logging back on MAGIC! on friday, April 5th. I would
prefer C.O.D., but I will send money order. I know, I know, i might not
get an answer to this soon, due to the apparent popularity of the
gimmick, but one can hope...

Re: MISC. STUFF
Couple little items that didn't make it into April's Inside Magic -
Tina Lenert and Mike Caveney are receiving the D.R.A.G.O.N. Award this
weekend. At the Magic Castle, I think, on Saturday, I think.
Also - apparently Bill Larsen let Stan [Allen] know that at the last
Castle board meeting the "art" was discussed and . . .
it's going! From what I understand from Stan, the negative responses to
the statue were reported at the meeting. Milt Larsen was very
understanding about the decision. Got a letter from Tom Ogden at the
office. I guess after one of his late shows, he led the audience
outside for a look at the statue as he read the official press release.
Oh Boy, do I wish I had been there to witness that!!

Re: IM AMUSEMENT PARK STORY
The May issue of Inside Magic will include a feature on magic at
amusement parks. Would love to hear from any of you that are working at
a park or could offer info on the subject. Basically, we need:
Name of magician
Name of park
Location (include nearest large city)
Number of performances a day, number of days per week
Date performances start thru when?
THANKS!!

Well, we aren't gone yet and with spring finally here we
might not leave til fall so no rush....the jaunt to Middleburg
would be most excellent and we'll def have to do it.
Sorry to hear about your faxx machine. Next time I'm
gonna decode the sender code off the top and not only mirror the
stuff but turn it inside out. There is a joke in MAD FAX that you
don't wanna do to your friends but to someone who keeps sending
you lots and lots of junk fax which involved sending lots of
blank paper and having the receiving machine scroll its roll onto
the floor - blank. DON'T DO IT......Nooooooo. I promise, no more
junk faxxx, just fax junk.
Just read your review of Steve's review and want to know
just what is hoopla ? I've heard of it before but never really
knew. Me, I like meeting and hanging out with new friends and old
friends. Everybody needs somebody to talk to and as Geno sez,
"Magicians are my friends, hell, they're my only friends."

Something else that seems to have been left out of the April issue of
INSIDE MAGIC..... the CORRECT issue number! (Unless you guys came out
with a "time release" issue between March and April that hasn't arrived
yet!)
I enjoyed the April issue, although I was hoping for a stronger
statement from Stan regarding the "art." All is well, though, if your
report is true about the removal decision. How soon can we expect the
tow truck?

text, in very small format, but a good precis of rules of play and a
short glossary. Let me know.

Re: CHRISTIAN CONJURING
That is very true about how Christian conjuring might offend people who
do not subscribe to Christianity. That is why I warned people both
before I posted it and in the actual message itself to be careful who
they present it to. The basic trick actually lends itself to many
plots or stories when you look at it. For instance you could make it
a murder mystery with the murderer discovered to have his victims blood
on him, or it could be a blushing card or whatever. I came up with the
story because I was asked to give a show for Easter to my in-laws who
are VERY Christian oriented. I mean they give Bible studies several
times a week in addition to all they do at church. So I invented it
for them and I had such a rave response I showed it to some friends who
I know are very active in their church. Again, this has become their
favorite trick of mine mostly due to the fact that they so closely
identify with it. I'm sure if I was foolish to show it to someone who
was not a Christian they would say "That's the dumbest thing I've ever
seen!"
Anyway, for those that can use the story line I came up with, I'm sure
you'll have a great response with it. For the others you might
consider a fresh story because the effect itself is a great one and I
believe, highly entertaining.
