MAGIC! - 20
The following was compiled from the magician's message section of
MAGIC!(tm). MAGIC! was an electronic communications system for
magicians. Access was free, except for normal telephone company
charges. New registrants were required to leave a comment with
their name, address, phone number and a brief resume of their magic
background to be considered for membership. The material herein
should be treated as confidentially as other magic information.

Re: LINK TO MAGIC!-NL
David,
.
I have been running my BBS for a while now, but am still not happy
about the interface to your system. To exchange messages between
NL and US is requiring a lot of human assistance from my side, as
well as lots of telephone costs.
Now I have to login to your BBS, start my log, read new messages.
Offline I have to put all those messages in separate files, and
manually put them into messages for the destination users.
You see a lot of human interaction, what should be forbidden in
this time of computers.
.
How can we solve this:
The only answer is standardization!!!!
We are not the only 2 suffering with this problem. Other BBS's do
have the same problem and solved it already for us. However to
implement this we have to adapt ourselfs a bit. I see 2 possibili-
ties:
A. Become fully FIDO compatible, and by means of Mailers we can
exchange messages. Also would that enable us to have fully auto-
matic user-to-user communication between the 2 boards. This
will allow the BBS'es to exchange msg's in batch format, in a
compressed form.
I understand you had some problems with the Frotdoor package I
sent you, but there are more packages available, like D'Bridge
and Brinkley. Both should be available at US BBS's since they
are US products. I know D'Bridge surely supports multiline BBS's.
.
B. Recently a new development appeared called XRS. eXpress Response
System. This system enables the user to exit to a door, which
packs all unread messages, from your message base, compresses them
in a file, that is downloaded.
Offline the user can read the messages, reply on them, or create
new messages. Those are packed again, and can be uploaded to the
BBS. The XRS at the BBS side will insert them in the Message Base.
This will safe the user dramatically on connect time.
The XRS I have, supports Tcomm, QBBS, RA, SuperBBS, Maximus, Opus
or XBBS Bulletin Boards.
XRS is a US product and comes from "East Bay X-change" in charles-
ton, SC. Tel nr. 803-556-7485. It's released as Shareware.
This option has the advantage that will be of benefit to ALL
BBS users.
I worked withit for a while, and do have it implemented on
MAGIC!-NL now, but is really GREAT.
I did some research for you and you must be able to obtain the XRS
files from the following BBS: Don's House, in El Cajon (near San
Diego), tel. nr. 619-440-6034.
What you require are following files:
XRS4ALL.ZIP user part
RQSEX143.ZIP BBS part
.
The XRS packages has Zmodem support via the DSZ.COM program, so
this will also increase file transfer rate from the average 130
cps to ca. 240 cps.
.
There is also another package called Silver Express that has
similar capabilities.
.
I hope you and your programming department are able to implement
either one of the above 2 solutions (with preference for the XRS),
as on the long term connection with US becomes too expensive for me
to survive. Once this is implemented I think it will become more
attracting to our japanese friends, aswell as to other long distance
callers, to get hooked on MAGIC!.
.
David, Please let me know your thought on above packet, and tell me
what are the changes you will be able to implement it.
What are your other thoughs about becoming fully FIDO compatible,
because if you were fully FIDO compatible, we could make use of the
complete FIDO network, and offer access to MAGIC! to the whole
world.
This will also enable us to offer our users direct member-to-member
messages????
.

I wish we could get the Birosan back East for a visit and take all of
us out to see Nick and Jane...not only is it a one-of-a-kind operation
it is an unique set up operated by two very nice folks. Nick is the
brains and the craftsman (and he has a mess of other folks working
there as well). Jane loves horses and runs the farm. I was trying to
look for a common thread with Jane and your wife...but all that keeps
running through my skull is "They don't shoot horses do they"...and I
don't think that plays well.
Methinks that "hoopla" is defined by the beholders eye! I think Steve
was most likely talking about stuff like introducing all the Past
Presidents at the beginning of shows...inducing presidents...giving
awards. That is what I took it to mean. Howsomever, he may have been
predicting the comeback of the hoola hoop in an abbreviated form. We
must await Steve's further definition of the matter.

MAD FAX is 20 bux and is OK if you like Ben Harris' ideas
(I do). It is typical Harris with some good stuff, some
impossible stuff and a few incomplete ideas (these I like too as
it gives me something to work through). There's an excellent
routine in the book using Creeps called House on Haunted Hill or
somthin like that - don't have the book in front of me as its in
copier/fax room (grandma's bedroom where she died on St. Paddys
Day seven years ago) - which is a different card in match box
routine.
There's some cool fax ideas in there (I'm still waiting
to use one of them on the rite party). I got my copy from Jeff
Busby Magic in Oakland about 6-8 months ago and have really
enjoyed it.
I'll sell you a xerox of it for three bux (just kidding).
You can probably get it from Ben or Jeff. Its a well done
paperback with small type and jammed with info and routines. Take
into consideration that I'm a fan of both Busby and Harris
writings and am somewhat opinionated in that direction.
Glad you liked the MAGIC! bookplate which someone (Biro)
compared to the work of Gahan Wilson and will ship the original
out to you ASAP when you get back to MAGIC! World HDQ.

We Shoot Pool, Don't You?
Yes, a visit from the Son of Greater Biro would be in
order and a cause for a celebration of some sort, I agree.
The thought of a visit to the shops of CW has my tail
wagging (with six dogs we use a lotta FIDO humor - sorry). Their
stuff is so beautiful and to reach that point with the building
craft would be a dream come true.
As far as HOOPLA is concerned, I thought it had something
to do with the basketball playoffs since we were recently in Las
Vegas - never bet against a team from NC as they have isolated
the DNA which makes for a super shot. They lost out on BBQ to GA
and SC they've hadta redefine their states image - I guess since
mosta Big E's (Elvis) backup singers were from the state its OK.
Am glueing up some leather table tops today as the studio
is quiet til Sunday. Also getting nervous as my faxx mach has
been silent and am wondering if you practice the Vietnamese 100
Year Revenge which is my fave theory of retaliation. Being
American, I have managed to condense a century into a few weeks
of fast forwards and quasi edits.

I get to blame that one on Stan. He just picked up the wrong layout
piece. The printer called and asked if he wanted it to say May. He said

Just reread your message re: STan's stand on the pig. He felt to a
certain degree that he shouldn't even bring it up. He felt it was very
much a local issue that doesn't belong in a publication aimed at folks
around the country. Since he was leaning towards no comment, I was
pleased there was any comment!

Regarding Stan's comment on the carwreck in front of the castle...
...The Magic Castle presents itself, and rightfully so, as the
worldwide Mecca for Magic. As such, anything pertaining to the Magic
Castle is appropriate reading for a worldwide audience! If it were not
so, then the Academy of Magical Arts would be named the Hollywood
Magicians' Club!!!
It might not be very courteous to the artist who created the

belief!
This is another thought all together, but i'm working on improving "The
Human Galvenometer" in the recent issue of GENII. I tie a silk around
the arm of the spectator who picked the card, in the manner of "Silk
through the arm". I claim the silk helps me to "read the muscles" and
tell when the spectator is lying. The effect is then done as in GENII,
with the entire effect providing time misdirection for "Silk thru Arm",
and after "figuring out" the card, yank off the silk! I am going to try
this out at the next SAM meeting. Anyways, just a thought...

Re: MISC. STUFF
There is a subtle, MAGIC!al, difference between an "empty" line
and one with "invisible" characters on it - "black art," if you
will. When I want an "empty" line I stick in a couple of chops
at the spacebar.
The reason for this is that MAGIC! recognizes two carriage
returns in a row as "End of message." But a carriage return
(ENTER key) followed by a couple of spaces followed by another
return is a "blank" line. This will also work with some
wordprocessors when pre-creating MAGIC! messages. Some word
processors, however, have the nasty habit of removing such
spaces.
Hope that helps.

Re: BRYANT
Wow. Quite a lengthy response to my Seminar
review. I appreciate your amplifying some of the
background for me. Quite honestly, the "presidential"
theme went right over my head. When I saw the
presidential silhouettes on the tables in the Tiffany
ballroom, I thought they were left over from some other
party. This explains, of course, the use of Mike Ellis
and Margaret Daily. As I stated in my review, I
thought they did a fine job. It's just that I would
have preferred a Michael Finney or someone like him.
Speaking of which, what became of the Amazing
Johnathan, who was advertised to appear? I've never
seen him work, but some of my layman friends in San
Diego have described his act to me, and I had been
looking forward to seeing him.
* *
As to your other comments --
* *
Let me try to put the IBM/SAM thing to rest,
though I doubt that I can. To try to explain to
someone why I don't like his fraternal organization is
like trying to explain why I don't like his religion.
There is no winning. You did seem to construe my
remarks as knocking the annual convention shows. The
convention shows have nothing to do with my feelings on
the matter. I realize that guys like you and Pete Biro
work hard and put on great convention shows, and I
avidly read Bill Larsen's reviews of them. But I still
don't want to attend them. It's not the shows, but the
environment that I can't bear. I know this is heresy.
It's completely personal. Some guys enjoy fraternal
organizations (magic or otherwise) and some don't. I
don't.
* *
On the conflicting lectures issue, you are
correct: comedy clubs and trade shows don't have that
much in common. For me, though, the tradeoff was
between Jeff Hobson and Mike Rogers. I admire both of
them and wanted to hear what each had to say,
regardless of the topic.
* *
Regarding evening lectures, I thought Johnny Ace
Palmer was terrific, and his show/lecture made up for
this year's dearth of closeup performers. I thought
the video monitor setup worked well, by the way. But
overall I tend to agree with you, that Las Vegas has so
much to offer in the evenings that it's nice to have
the time off. In any other town, I would have wanted
the convention activities to last well into the
evening, with midnight lectures, etc.
* *
Continued . . .

Re: BRYANT
(Part 2 of msg to Bill Wells)
Any other topics? Yes . . . a big one, one that I
had overlooked because it hadn't affected me
personally. The Thursday contest show was scheduled to
begin at 9:00 P.M. Instead, it began at 8:30, with the
presidential mask bit, and then transitioned directly
into the contestants. As a result, a considerable
number of people who eventually sat at my table or near
my table DID NOT SEE the first two contestants.
Although I don't think this ultimately affected the
outcome, this was unfair to those contestants.
* *
Which brings up the voting. I've always thought
it rather strange that you can vote for only the top
choice. For example, let's assume that one contestant
is clearly the top performer, and that he nets 80
percent of the votes. This means that 80 percent of
the voters have no say whatsoever as to who places
second or third. Indeed, second and third are now
decided by a minority of individuals who have already
demonstrated poor judgement (one of the givens of my
premise is that the #1 contestant truly deserved to be
#1). To me, a better formula would be to let each
voter place a 1, 2, and 3 on his ballot. The
contestant with the largest number of 1st place votes
is the overall winner. Of those remaining, the
contestant with the largest combination of 1st and 2nd
place votes comes in second. Finally, of the remaining
10, the contestant with the largest combination of 1st,
2nd, and 3rd place votes comes in third. This way,
each voter has a say in who places in all three spots.
I realize that this would complicate the counting, but
I think this would make 2nd and 3rd place even more
meaningful.
* *
Aaugh! In responding to your response, I seem to
be emphasizing only negative things. The one or two
negative comments I made in the original Seminar review
were EXTREMELY MINOR in my estimation. I love Joe's
conventions, and I especially loved this one. Let me
close with a few positive comments and suggestions.
* *
THANKS for the sandwich idea.
* *
For next year's comedy contest, you guys should
INVITE Jon Brunelle to enter. Download my file on last
year's Invocational and check the description of his
act. Very weird, very funny. Brian DeWitt's act from
the same convention would also score well.
* *
All best wishes in Baltimore.

Re: MAGIC OF AMMAR (BOOK)
Dear Friends,
Am I excited, no Elvira didn't drop by, I just got a look
at the cover and a hint at some of the contents of Michael
Ammar's new book, THE MAGIC OF MICHAEL AMMAR, for L&L Publishing
which should be out at least by the end of May. This promises to
be one of the finest books out this (or any other) year and I
can't wait to get my hands on a copy.
When I talked to Louis Falanga at the DMS he told me the
book would have over 300 pages and contain much of the wisdom
that puts Ammar at the head of the class. I haven't seen the full
color jacket - my peek came via FAX - but I hear there will also
be a large poster reproduction similar the one they did for the
Vernon Chronicles.
How do you get your hands on one, well you'll have to
wait for the release date of May 21, 1991. If you're on L&L's
mailing list I'm sure the next issue of his newsletter will have
all the info. If you're not on his list, write him at
L & L Publishing Co.
Box 100
Tahoma, CA 95733
and ask to be put on their mailing list. I know Burt Carpenter
will want me to remind you that most new books are available
through him right here on MAGIC! and Burt contributes 10% of the
price of each book he sells to MAGIC! for the continued operation
of The Great Computer Network.
The Magic of Michael Ammar should also be available
through
Michael Ammar's
SECRET SERVICE
5701 Evergreen Court
Austin, Texas 78731
and from Michael in person when he lectures in your town.
I didn't mean for this to be a commercial when I started

Re: BRUCE RUDOLPH
I was just wondering if anyone has seen the abominable
letter written by Bruce Rudolph in the March GENII.
Unfortunately, Mr. Rudolph submitted an article to me for THE
MAGIC MENU on doing table-hopping mentalism which will appear in
our May/June issue. Had I known that Mr. Rudolph held the
magical arts in such low regard, I never would have printed his
article. As a matter of fact, I am sending a letter of apology
along with our May/June issue, explaining that Mr. Rudolph's
stupid remarks in the GENII letter in no way reflects the
opinions of THE MAGIC MENU (and I would hope, of GENII!).
I guess the thing that really burns me up about Rudolph's
letter is his ridiculous assumption that "mystery,
believability, and a genuine sense of wonderment" can only be
aroused when the spectators believe what they've just witnessed
is "real." Oh, really??? Does any thinking adult really
believe that David Copperfield vanished the Statue of Liberty?
Yet, that illusion stands as one of the great modern feats of
conjuring among the lay public. Magic challenges the
imagination; a thinking adult knows that there's no such thing
as magic, but entertainment is created when the spectators let
their imaginations go wild a bit and allow themselves the
pleasure of experiencing the apparent temporary suspension of
the laws of nature.
Magic (at its best) should be ENTERTAINMENT! Any time we
use our deceptions as anything else (such as trying to make our
spectators actually believe what they are seeing is reality)
comes dangerously close to charlatanism (Uri Geller being the
most obvious example). Rudolph says that "cards do not change
color, and coins do not really disappear." What's amazing is
that this genius thinks this is some sort of divine revelation
to other magicians. Someone should tell him that "mindreaders"
don't really read minds, either. They use nail writers,
clipboards, billet switches and other methods of deception as
numerous as the traditional conjuror. One of the major points
of his semi- grammatical letter was that "no one believes in
magic." Well, quite honestly, no one believes in mind reading,
either. At least no one with brains. I don't doubt that some
people might. I suspect that these are the same people who would
also run off to the jungles of Guyana and drink poisoned
Kool-Aid or sell cheap magazines early on Sunday mornings when
we normal folks are trying to get some sleep.
He also heaps lots of insults on us magic types...using
phrases like "pathetically confrontational drivel" when
describing patter and "west coast creative kind of guys" (used
very sarcastically in the letter's context) and "time consuming,
knuckle busting, cutesy-wootsey, self-congratulatory ego
fantasies masquerading as entertainment" to describe
sleight-of-hand artists and their books. He also takes a shot
at the kids show guys by saying that it's "highly unlikely that
you will ever be asked to do kids' birthday parties and the like
ever again." I think the real secret here (and the reason why
Rudolph has apparently had no luck in presenting magic
successfully) is summed up by his own words. He says that he
spent "years performing good but not great close-up magic."
Magic in general will best be served when he realizes he's doing
"good but not great" mentalism and takes up the tuba. I know
there's a couple of you who will disagree with my hypothesis
that no one believes in mind reading. If the disagreements come
from the quarters I suspect they will, the contrary opinions
will be largely self-serving. However, just so it won't get
lost in the nit-picking that often runs rampant here, my main
point is that Bruce Rudolph is all wet when he says that magic
and magicians are invalid as an entertainment form because "no
one believes in magic." I would much rather amuse and amaze my
audience than have some poor doe-eyed soul ask me, after doing a
cold reading, whether she should sell her house or not. If
Rudolph can handle that kind of responsibility, he can have it!
Once again, to readers of THE MAGIC MENU who are also on
this board, I apologize in advance for even running Rudolph's
article in the magazine but I was unaware of his hostility
toward magic and magicians when the article was originally
submitted.
Other than that, how's everybody doin'?

Re: STEINMEYER BOOK
Speaking of books, got to proof Jim Steinmeyer's new book on illusions.
Proofing rather than reading I don't pick up quite as much info, but I
think this will potentially be a fascinating book. I don't know, but
imagine it will be a summer convention release. Also, it will be packed
with illustrations (which I didn't get to see, nice boxes, though...).
Jim is publishing this book.
Magical Publications has another Steinmeyer book set for this summer.
This one will be on Thurston's illusions. From what I understand,
Thurston at some point (20s?) took all his illusions and photographed
them. He then added dimensions and other info to the photos. Jim has
taken the photos and notes and added his own comments to give quite a
picture of the workings of many of Thurstons effects. Another one I got
to proof and I found it really fascinating. Mag. Pub. is planning to
have this one ready for PCAM. They'll probably do any advertising
mailing for this one, so if anyone would like to get on their mailing
list leave info here and I'll pass it along. For the record, their
second convention release will be Darwin Ortiz' notes on Erdnase.

Don't know how many of you are familiar with Maurcie Zolotow, but just
read in Times that he passed away March 14. He was 77.
I had one of his books, "It Takes All Kinds" and enjoyed it - has
pieces on magicians: Cardini, Dunninger & others. Saw Zolotow for the
first time at the Mulholland Convention. Thought he was such an
interesting/fun speaker. I met him briefly at the end of the convention
when I asked him to sign my book. He was so sweet & funny. He kidded
around about enscribing it with a thank you for our wild weekend. I
told him to go ahead, it would be funny & would drive some future book
collector crazy. Really a pleasant memory for me, made me very sad to
read of his passing. Zolotow also wrote the fictional, "The Great
Balsamo."

Apparently, everyone thought that the angles were too limiting when it
was released in 1980. Many people bought the gimmick after seeing Jeff
Stewart do close-up (Yes! close-up!) with it, but took it home and
forgot about it. That's why Meir Yedid and Jeff repackaged it with a
video and book. If you see the tape, and see Jeff do "The Killer Move",
you'll see how it can be used for close-up. There is a bill switch that
is done instantaneously! It comes with magicians wax, but i prefer to
stick a coin to it using a plastic adhesive, such as HOLD IT! or Blue
Tack. You can do the magic with a borrowed coin, and return with no
residue! If you learn how to use it right, you can do some amazing
close-up!

I didn't care for Rudolph's letter either, but in no way should you
apologize for running his letter. Just chalk it up to free speech. The
gist of his letter (Not the vicious tone) seems to indicate he wants to
be seen as a real wizard and/or magician. Most likely, that is why he
got into psychic effects. People now (according to the letter)
apparently believe in his magic.
Just because he didn't get along with magic, he doesn't have to take it

Wanting people to "believe in your magic" is not desiring to be an

Free speech is important. I am apologizing to my readership for

As I have stated before...
I agree...in part...with Pete.
We needn't insult the artist. Although our respecting his free speech
should entitle us to his respect for OUR free speech.
My right of free speech entitles me to say that the "sculpture" in
question is, in my opinion, an atrocity...an leaking car wreck that
should be towed away as soon as possible!
I hope that the talents of the artist are better exhibited in his other
works.
I have no interest in attending a removal party...it smacks of a
bookburning celebration. I am sorry that the unfortunate decision was
made to place such an inappropriate work at the entrance of The Magic
Castle to begin with. Maybe a more appropriate home for the sculpture
can be found...(go easy now boys!) Milt Larsen's front yard? Pete
Biro's magic den? (sorry)
In all seriousness, I think that replacement of the birdbath would be
a good reason to celebrate. We could call it the "TORN AND RESTORED

My passion for Scarlett O'Hara keeps me from disparaging Georgia
Bar-B-Que. North Carolinians don't seem to know diddly-squat about
true Bar-B-Que, but they do have a way with smoked turkey, and, around
Calabash (No, we DON'T need any Jimmy Durante lines) they certainly
know how to do seafood.
Which brings me back to what this all has to do with magic. I maintain
that originally each geographic area had its own regional magic.
Granted, there were overlaps, and, certainly, a considerable amount of
exchange among magi, but there were regional preferences. Now it is
all "franchise" magic - maybe not as bad as the Pete Biro "mechanical
act" scenario, but certainly common effects are performed nation/World
wide. But aren't there still regional preferences?

I also noted Mr. Rudolph's comments in Genii. I agree that most
people are more easily fooled (or maybe "taken") by mentalism, although
I don't know why. Maybe Mr. Maven could grant insight here. What I feel
Mr. Rudolph has done in his chosen new direction is to take an easier
path. He then chides us, in effect, for taking a slightly more
difficult route toward entertainment.
The fields of magic and mentalism are far too closely allied to
separate into opposing factions. This is counterproductive to us all.

My family was in the possession of the #2 car for the ill
fated Americus Electric Railway Co. down in Sumter Co. Georgia
(I guess you'd have to be from the "Convict State" to understand
why they put all that pig in Ga BBQ) which didn't survive the
somewhat gay 90s (not now). Anyway we participated in its'
restoration and gave it to the county library (non weathered) to
use as a children's reading rool. Don't get the idea that I'm
some great guy because I voted to keep it and use it as my
reading room.
And I don't care who knows it. They make the best bbq
samwich on white bread in Sumter Co., Georgia PLUS, my wife has
THE killer recipe for the most famous brunswick stew, I'm not
kidding this time. I am happy to also report that I did have an
excellent bbq sandwich in Anderson, SC; but that's not that far
over the Georgia line.
For all those listeners who could care less about bbq
they'll have to understand what circumstance breeds in a man (or
woman, though all the great bbq chefs have been men) who is lucky
enough to be from the barbecue belt.
BTW.....baseball is great. My secret dream with my two
sons is to win the big lottery and buy a minor league team and
watch em PLAY BALL.
Sometimes I think I should lock this computer up but I'm
drawn to it like a moth to the flick of a Bic.

Re: BRUCE RUDOLPH
I know what you mean, Pete. It IS frightening. I once did a show
where I used MENTAL EPIC on an old lady. As a matter of course, I
asked her to think of a four digit number, and then purposely reversed
the order of the last two digits. Wouldn't you know it, after the show
she came up to me and APOLOGIZED for getting the numbers screwed up.
I believe that there is some truth to the mentalism being easier to
"suspend disbelief". Most everyone knows that there is no thing as
magic, but E.S.P., psychics, mediums--that's another matter entirely,
and the jury is still out. Heck, all the "National Enquirers" and such
are always filled with predictions by noted "psychics". Don't see to
much press about magicians and their feats of wonder...

Re: BOOK SPECIALS
The following is a "commercial" for new books available from Burt
Carpenter. 10% of all proceeds go to support MAGIC!
Phil Goldstein's newest book _THAVANT_ is now available. _THAVANT_
includes 15 new mentalism routines including "Mix Me Deadly" a new
approach to the psycic detective plot, and "the centifuge principle"
which makes a wide range of miracles possible. Stephen Minch, the
publisher says to dealers "If you demonstrate the first trick over the
counter your sales should be guaranteed...it's a stunning effect and
easy to do." All items in this 8x10 52 page book use simple props and
are easy to learn. Uniquely every effect is done with the performers
back to the audience. Michael Weber of _Inside Magic_ says "Every
routine here would be pretty astonishing even if the performer was
watching the spectators, but the addition of the turned back puts many
of these routines in the miracle class...Highly recommended." Price is
only $12.00- $13.50 postpaid.
For you card fans _THE ARONSON APPROACH_ is just your ticket. At only
$30.00 it's a steal. Simon Aronson specializes in cards, close-up, and
mental magic. _Inside Magic_ says "All interesting, deceptive, workable
material, theres not a bad trick in the book. Well produced and
brimming with great ideas. My highest recommendation."
_SONATA_ by Juan Tamariz. 312 pages, 400 illustrations. Only
$45.00+shipping (and you don't have to send to Spain!) For those at
Desert Magic need I say more?
In honor of the March _Genii_ featuring Stewart James, _STEWART JAMES
IN PRINT_ will be 10% off during the month of April.($81.00 instead of
$90.00) This is the largest single volume in all of magic. 1025 8 1/2
x 11 inch pages. Because of its sheer size and weight please add $7.00
postage. This is the first 50 years work by the man who by his own
admission wrote most of the Tarbell course and who was published in
every major magic magazine. Phil Willmarth says "This is the most
monumental magic publication since _Greater Magic_."
As you read the new April _Genii_ featuring Randy Wakeman remember I
also carry his books and videos.
Now for the best part. 10% of all proceeds go to support this MAGIC!
BBS. Currently there have been only 3 ways to raise money to help pay
the phone bill and help pay for equipment. 1)Direct contribution to
David Lichtman [I encourage you all to do so!] 2)Auctions of
books/memorabilia held by Tabby Crabb. 3)This booksale. Please download
the file BOOKSALE.TXT for a more complete list and ordering
instructions.
To download the file from the main menu type "F" for files. Then at the
fdiles menu type "D" for download. This file is in ASCII. Set your
communications software to recieve a file or just turn on your capture
buffer or printer. If you have any problems respond to David Lichtman

Re: WOMEN IN MAGIC
Let me tell you how we used to deal with kids in the magic shop at
Knott's Berry Farm when they would grab at your props or hands. We
would take out a coin and place it on the close-up mat close to the
performer. We would then ask the kid if he knew why magic wands were
invented. They always cautiously said no. As we held a hardwood wand
wex would then tell the kid to touch the coin. USUALLY they would reach
for it slowly. The wand would come down with a hard, fast BANG against
the mat in front of the coin before they could get to it. The noise
and movement frightened them and they would withdraw thier hand like it
had just touched a hot fire. Then the kid was asked not to touch
anything unless asked to or we would use magic wand. In the several
years we did this we never had a complaint from a parent. We stopped
doing it after a particularly fast kid got to the coin at the same time
the wand did. (Ouch) There were no repercussions as the kid deserved
the bruised knuckles but we didn't feel it was in our best interest to
damage the "guests". Probably wouldn't work with women though.

Re: OREO AUDITIONS
You know, Pete, you're right. Catsup bottles ARE manufactured with a
special high-silicon, low-friction/adhesion glass. The coefficient of
static friction on the inside of a catsup bottle approaches that of wet
ice. Teflon (tm) also has the same properties. A few years back,
J. T. Placebo published a series of Matrix routines utilizing half
dollars that had their undersides coated with Teflon (tm). Made the
thumb pad sweep extremely easy (almost self working). I experimented
with them back in, oh, I think it was 1959, but gave up the idea when
I found that coins with the special preparation tended to slip off my
close-up mat, and took a nose-dive into the laps of the spectators.
I had thought I was on to something (viz: Spectator lapping) but then
discovered that Hofzinser had throughly exhausted the idea many years
before. Marlo published a pamphlet on the subject, "Slippery When Dry"
back in '57, and Roth capitalized on the idea in his monumental epic,
"The 100 Yard Thumb Kick" lecture notes in 1972.
Since then, Mike Maxwell, Suds the magic Clown, Larry Jennings and
Derek Dingle have published variantions on this theme. Richard Kaufman
was considering a video on it, but after several false starts,
abandoned the idea when it was determined that Teflon (tm) coins would
not show up on TV, hence he had the option of doing coin sleights ala
Marcel Marceu, or enclosing an errata sheet of pen and ink drawings of
what it _should_ look like.
So I guess the topic of Teflon (tm) coated coins should be laid to
rest. I do think there is more that can be done, but I, for one,
haven't the time to experiment further. Perhaps it should be left to
magic's younger generation.
Just imagine what one could do with a Teflon (tm) coated deck!

Have you considered the possibility of adding some coins with velcro on
them? I know that a series of velcro coin tricks were published
privately by Erdnase in 1897 and also Bobo in a memorandum circulated
at the Stevens/Munari Close-Up convention. But I don't think anyone
has done a modern combination of teflon coins and velcro coins in a
rough/smooth effect.
P.S. - Howie Schwarzman sells a version of one of the Bobo velcro coin
effects.

While we're on the subject... According to IBM (and, I presume, SAM)
there has NEVER been a U.S. Postage Stamp honoring a magician. They
are trying to remedy that. Hope it ends up with something appropriate;
would hate to see it be a 1-cent stamp or a pre-cancel or something.
Which brings me to another question about the government. With all the
controversy about the National Endowment for the Arts - has ANY
magician EVER received NEA funding? Or is it reserved strictly for
high class folks who splash paint on canvas, cut up old automobiles and
make sculptures, and for those who dance on their toes?

Yes...North (and South) Carolinians around Calabash do cook lots of
seafood...in fact...almost more than I can eat....but I do love that
area and the summer vacations we have enjoyed near there. I would
agree that magic does tend to follow certain patterns in certain areas,
but I am not sure if the patterns relate to geography or to certain
magicians who happen to live in that area. An example might be Marlo
and more than the usual number of card magicians in Chicago. (lots of
line noise today)

Your wife is indeed talentened!!
I should have known you had done some modeling...your
intelligence and grace was just too fine for it to have been
otherwis -e. HO scale is just a further indication of your good
judgement. I am a fan of the 50's period and the - Norhthfok and
Western Railway. Since they were the last of the railroads to give up
on steam...that allows me to have both steam and deisel power at the
same time. I do more modeling than operating...particularly now that
the layout is in pieces after the move. I also do a bit of military
modeling (mainly for the kids) but weathering is great factor on
military models as well as trains. Anyhow, I think modeling technique
can be of great help to the magician, particularly if one manufactures
any of their own props. Even got into a bit of leather working in
order to make a cinder for the Ramsay coins many years ago.
As I have long wished to own a caboose, I understand why your family
would have owned such a car...don't you wish you still had it?
I wonder if any of these yankees on here ever had boiled peanuts.

CAN pay off...but you must be relentless! Is IBM and/or SAM lobbying

Regarding NEA funding and the apparent absence of any funding for

The question is much larger than that of NEA funding...
It really boils down to the lack of recognition of magic as an art form

Re: ANY BBQ IN HOLLAND
Traffic Congestion?
I'll confess to having built two small railroads and one
decorama, but this was many moons ago. Yes, especially after
seeing the restored trolly finished out in yellow and green. but
it lives on for my dad and grandad in Americus, Ga at the Lake
Blackshear Regional Library. Stop by and see it if you're ever in
Americus sneaking some Georgia bbq.
Will faxx you the brunswick stew recipe unless of course
Frank Garcia is online and wants a great and most magical brew to
include in his latest book....then I'll put it up, however like
most great effects, this is a TOP SECRET. A veritable fortune
could be made down on some state highway in Georgia if I opened
Tabman's BBQ and Brunswick Stew Stand and Horseshoe Pit. Bettern
Country's BBQ in Columbus, GA and they in their ignorance claim
to have the best.
Having started this bbq thread about a year ago when I
found out The Frog was from SC, I wish to lay it to rest -
probably to the relief of most of the MAGIC! bbsers - by having
my attorney read the following statement:
"I tabman, having sampled the bbq in Mississippi,
Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina,
Virginia, and yes, even Texas have reached the conclusion that
beef bbq from the Lone Star state is better than no bbq at all
and Marylanders think bbq is chicken."
Between the 2 or 3 of us, Biroman, could have a pretty
good time around here. We don't have any kidz but 6 dogs, 2 cats,
9 parrots, and 40 million ants should qualify for some sort of
annoyance; however, the guest room has its own air conditioner
and there is an air of days past still lingering in the village
especially when the Amish buckboards trot by.
Now with keeping up with the two of ya'll I ordered a
2400 baud modem today sooz I can get up and down four times
quicker than I think instead of only twice as fast. I can't
believe the west coast kidz got their April Genii mag alredy. I
just got March.
MAGIC! is about the easiest way for me to keep up with
you jet setters, and since grandpa's mule died I stick pretty
close to home. Heck, this terminal is in my dining room turned
office and I can keep an eye on the studio out the window so I
get drawn in pretty often and it's great to check in and there's
a friendly voice coming across the wire. Would imagine that
sometimes these ld calls go via satellite and we're really
racking up the frequent flyer miles.

Model making is, no doubt, a powerful tool for a mage. Some VERY handy

You know, Pete, there's some sort of automotive shop I pass by often.
They have similar pieces out front & I get a kick out of it. Went to
the art museum recently and, yes, my taste certainly runs to more
"classical" (think that would be the term) art. I was, personally,
really uncomfortable with the placement of the piece at the Castle. I
felt something wasn't right when it was officially called a "cat". It
always, absolutely looked like a pig in a cape to me. Also was
uncomfortable to find out that the artist was inspired by Lance Burton.
Also, why would the artist want to place his piece in such an
inappropriate place? Hoping for a sale?
Well, I hate to hear narrow-minded people. They limit themselves so
much, but I guess I'm coming off as one - will have to contemplate that

Yes, indeed, the NEA probably does have a blind spot when it comes to
magic. I don't know how the committees were put together, but NEA
funding is by committees of peers. So it isn't what you can do, or how
much the public may enjoy it, it is political relationships with your
like minded (as you put it so well, "elitist, narrow-minded") peers.
Result - "Michael" would probably get NEA funding for the "Super Pig,"
but anyone in the magic community would probably find no-one to talk
to.

True enough, slapping an adult woman on the knuckles with ones wand
these days would certainly lead to something I would rather avoid.
What I am trying to work with is to always keep a man (and one I dont
think will be a problem) on my left side. The right is safer as a
rught hander this is my active hand and someone coming in from the
right will be picked up much sooner than someone coming in from the
left. Kids we just keep back out of arms reach.

I appologize for including Texas BBQ in a discussion of
Southern BBQ as everyone knows Texas BBQ is Western BBQ cooked to
perfection over a bed of mesquite, it's hard to beat; however, if
you don't behave...no Brunswick Stew Recipe. Gloria is worried
that the family BS recipe will get one offed, but I assured her
that magicians aren't like that.
As far as the CARD ON WINDOW effect the coincidence
caught me off guard. I didn't get a chance to watch the credits
roll. Did someone receive direct credit for the effect, or were
they merely "Thank Yous" at the end.
Several years ago James Randi got a MacArthur Foundation
Fellowship for a quarter mil + in a magic related grant. I would
imagine a magician could get a NEA grant if he were able to tie
his art in with socially revelancy or link it to a minority
related issue. Part of the problem is that it would become part
of the public record and public trust and this goes against the
oath of secrecy our deep involvement implies.
Lance Burton's cardboard and gaffertaped "Moth" which he
presented at the DMS was every bit as strong as the magic DC
presented last night. Does this mean that we'll see "Big L" on
national tv soon. I for one hope so. Maybe a Lance and Melinda
Special ???
Will send BS recipe ASA I find Gloria. She went into
hiding right after I told her I'd promised it to a PAIR OF ACES.

as of yet, besides the hotel contract which has been signed, but
we've gotten verbal committments from these guys. I'm still
waiting to hear from my fave parlour magi and one of the great

The Card on the Window was not attributed to anyone. The "Thank You's"
were general, but included Mac King, Michael Ammar, etc., and
"Mindgames Consultant" Max Maven. I thought all of the effects were
very strong and enjoyed the show very much. Thought he handled the
"Mindgame" very well. Now Arnaud wants a complete description, so one
of us (generic) is gonna have to review the show.
I didn't realize that the NEA would require a report - I assumed that
they would just want tickets to the show. Do they make the artists
list what type of paints they used? Guess "Michael" could inventory
the "Super Pig" sources. Thanks for the MacArthur info - did I ever
tell you that I knew John D.? He was quite a character and made sure
that his money would not go to fund "more of the same." Created the
most innovative foundation around.

Melinda, welcome aboard. I was able to catch your show with our David
Lichtman our SYSOP (System Operator) while we were visiting at Desert
Magic. Sorry I couldn't get a chance to talk with you after the show,
but I had another appointment. I did get one of your posters when you
visited the morning seminar show. Thanks. I enjoyed your show and think
you have a tremendous amount of energy. I was however kind of put off
by the chinese act. trying to push a pole through someones throat makes
me a little squeemish. I just don't find it entertaining. What are you
tryng to accomplish with both them and Los Latin Cowboys? Are they
meant to balance the show so that it's not too feminine? I thought
your juggler was great and really enjoyed his bit. I thought the other
two acts went too long and would have prefered to see more magic
instead if that were possible.
Sorry this was to be a welcome message, not a critique of your show.
Perhaps we can discuss that more later. There have been several
discussions here in which you could be a very welcome contributor. One
of the most popular questions is why there aren't more women performing
magic here in the US. Maybe you could give us your thoughts on that.
Many on the board would also enjoy hearing how it is to work in Las
Vegas. Do you or your producer have the most control of what goes in
the show? Do you have to fight with a show budget as you try to include
more illusions or hire more dancers etc. OOPS I'm off track again. Let
me try again. WELCOME TO MAGIC!

Re: COPPERFIELD - 1 OF 2
Arnaud - here is the description you asked for. I have deliber-
ately left out correct magical descriptions and sources so that
you can hold a "contest" if you wish...
COPPERFIELD XIII
Copperfield XIII began with a series of sensuous tight close-ups
of a lady getting dressed, in semi-Victorian style, as she de-
scribed the mystique of the Orient Express. The close-ups, of
eyes, lips, and other bodily parts, and accessories such as
jewelry, were very well done, using a combination of black and
white and colour.
The show then cut to a misty train station. As people boarded
the train, David arrived on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. With
an assistant, he covered the Harley and in a few moments we began
to see motion under the drape. He whipped off the drape and the
bike was gone! In its place were two women sitting on suitcases.
At this point the show paused for a series of commercials, most
of them featuring the "magic" of Clorox bleach and several other
household cleaning products.
Following the commercials, the MAGIC!(tm) creme de la creme
began. After being seated at a table in the dining car, David
began to overhand shuffle a deck of Bicycle cards. He then
placed his hand over the deck and when he removed it, they were
in a card case. Re-removing them from the case, he displayed the
fronts to show that they were all different. He then had Jane
Seymour touch a card toward the middle of the deck. He cut to it
and showed it - a four of diamonds. He tore a corner off of it
and told her to hold it in sight of the camera all the time. He
moved a few props from in front of the window and fired the cards
at the window. One stuck, back showing and with a corner miss-
ing, to the window. He asked her to reach for it and she discov-
ered that it was on the OUTSIDE of the window! He opened the
window and peeled the card off. While keeping it in plain sight
between his thumb and forefinger, he turned it over to reveal the
4 of diamonds! He then matched the torn piece to show that it
was the original card.
The scene then cut to a stage show. David led a woman to an open
stand and placed her in it. He placed a wooden bar in front of
her neck and locked it in place. He then placed a box over her
head. He closed the box and picked up a large sword. He used
the sword to completely sever her head! The audience went WILD!
Then he inserted a steel plate under the box. Without touching
the box, presumably using telekinetic powers, he slid the box
around on the stand. The headless woman remained in full view.
Audience went wild again. He picked up the box and carried it
across the stage. He placed it on an open bottom table. He
opened the front of the box and the head smiled and moved.
Across the stage, the woman's body also continued to wave and
move. He closed the cover, restored the head, and released the
woman from the stand. The audience went REALLY WILD.
He then recruited an audience member and, amid considerable by-
play, proceeded to do a series of rope tricks. First he asked
her to cut the rope in the center. Only one rope kept getting
longer. He kept her trimming it until he finally gave up and
restored the rope to its uncut condition. He did a series of
"you do as I do" cut and restored ropes, ending with the removal
of knots tied in the ropes.
Changing costumes in front of the audience, he did a terrific and
very well choreographed water suspension. Then the water was
turned off and he floated the suspended woman around him twice,
culminating with passing a flaming ring around her. This was
truly beautiful to watch.
After that magnificent effect, we had a series of commercials.
Following the commercials, David once again went out into the
audience and selected a volunteer. He had her select a balloon
from a number of balloons. He then had her select a card and
sign it. Placing her card back in the deck, he placed the se-
lected balloon on top, and after quickly bringing his hands to-
gether, the deck was encased in the balloon. He blew up the
balloon and "shuffled" the deck by shaking it. He then reached
through the balloon and pulled her signed card out.
Once again, he went into the audience. This time selecting a
volunteer and remaining surrounded. He floated a tissue paper
ball and then floated it above her hand. He formed the tissue
into a rose and suspended it, moving his hands around it. He
then held it and lit it with a cigarette lighter. It flamed into
a real rose which he handed to the volunteer.
We were then treated to more commercials, mostly for household
cleaning products. (Continued...)

Re: COPPERFIELD - 2 OF 2
David then introduced an effect he called "The Big Black Box."
On stage was a large black box suspended on a platform on wheels.
As he went over to it, the box, apparently made of cloth, bumped
outward in several places. David then removed the top and folded
down the sides to show the box completely empty. The audience
loved it. He then reassembled the box, leaving the front par-
tially open. From the stage he picked up a large cloth and slid
it partially over the box, covering the opening. A small shape
appeared and moved to one side (right) of the stage. The audi-
ence applauded. He repeated the process and a second small shape
appeared and moved to the left side of the stage. The audience
applauded again. He repeated the process a third time and a
small shape moved to the center front of the stage. He then
lowered himself into the box and closed the front and top. The
rightmost shape rose and removed the drape - it was a woman. The
leftmost shape performed in the same manner. The center shape
also removed the drape - but this time it was David himself! The
audience went wild again! He then ran back to the box, turned it
and immediately opened the top and all the sides again - to
reveal three dogs! The audience went crazy!
David then did a Max Maven "Mindgame" in which the audience at
home was directed to place their finger on one of nine boxes on
the screen. Each of the nine boxes had the name of a train car
in it. He instructed the audience to move their finger in any
direction except diagonally. He would then say things like "move
three spaces." Although he never indicated a direction, most
people (except those who got lost or who couldn't follow direc-
tions) ended up pointing to the dining car - the one he would
vanish.
After a few more commercials, we moved to the big scene - 70
people holding hands around an 85 foot (almost 26 metre) long,
140,000 pound (63,503 kg) railroad car. The car was then covered
with a very large drape. After a couple of magical moves by
David, the car levitated and floated around. David then mounted
a platform and pulled off the drape. The railroad car had van-
ished!
As the formerly linked people moved into the now empty space, the
show closed and we had more commercials.

.
Thanks, thanks, thanks thanks, for uploading the Copperfield report.
This is the way magic BBS's should work, and will proove their
value to the magicial society. Quick, detailed information supply.
Thanks for your support on this matter.
I can already tell you that this summer I will upload daily reports
from the FISM convention in Lausanne Switzerland. Don't know who of
the MAGIC!-US members will be there, but we will also be recognisa-
ble by our MAGIC!-NL buttons (liked the idea...), once we have those
finished I will send you one.
Of course my laptop in Switzerland is also available for any US
member to inform his home-front about the activities. We will upload
this messages to MAGIC!-NL, but I will make sure that with a daily
login, you will see them immediately, so connection time is minimal.
Of course I do not have to possibility to provide you with digitized
photo's. Will send you details when FISM come nearer.
.
If US members are coming to this side of the ocean, please tell to
plan a visit to the MAGIC!-NL offices. We will be most happy to
welcome them, show them the computerfloor, our data entry department,
The board of directors meeting room, etc. etc.
Just let me know if someone comes to Holland, we will take care for
them.
.
I don't know what went wrong with your uploading, locally here in
Holland all works fine.
.
About the MAGNL-01 file, please notice this
file contains a lot of dutch messages, we have mostly dutch member
and do not see the use of talking english among each other.
Once we see, that we get serious participation from other European
countries, we will certainly change over to English in all area's
again. For the moment I allow a mixture. So the bundled file might
not be that readable, except if you can have it translated by Mr.
P. Pit. All english messages we have are uploaded to your system,
or are MAGIC!-US messages that I have imported in the system.
.
See you,
Arnaud.

Thanks for the kind words, but I don't feel qualified
to do a Copperfield review -- partly because I have no
idea how he did several items, including the train
vanish. (Also -- no need! Just read the terrific
review by David Lichtman as I was preparing to upload
this.) Is this BBS "secure" enough to run theories?
The requisite posing and suspected cheating aside (and
I'd like to see the rest of you tackle that part,
especially Mike Caveney's INSIDE MAGIC/OPUS piece
arguing that, since closeup magicians use tables to
cheat the eye, it's OK for television magicians to use
the camera to cheat the eye), I will at least mention
that I enjoyed it, all of it, and I thought the train
vanish was one of David's most interesting "big
finishes" in years. What affected me most deeply,
however, was seeing David's updated versions of Doug
Henning's water levitation and Things That Go Bump in
the Night. These brought back memories of the first
time I saw Doug Henning live, at the Fifth Avenue
Theater in Seattle; his water levitation and fire
hoop, so beautifully staged, gave me chills that night.
I miss Doug's presence on the American magic scene and
hope that the Orlando venture will precipitate his
return.

Re: COPPERFIELD
Hi Steve....
Again...A lotta people owe a debt to Doug Henning and
what his personality did for magic on television. I attended a
lecture on TM (Houston, Tx 1975) presented by Doug and he invited
me to join him for breakfast afterward - I was there more for the
magic of Doug than the magic of TM - and corresponded with him
fora while afterward. Wish I'd bought some of his stuff when he
offered it up a few back.
Copperfield was masterful the other night and I enjoyed
it more than any of his specials in recent years. I got a call
immed after the program from my studio engineer wanting to know
which card from Max's Mind Games I ended up with. That was the
strongest effect to Dom and his girlfriend whom I heard screaming
in the background "Ask him how he did it" so I gave em Max's
phone number (just kidding Max, though I did rec the Mind Games
vid - if we keep bugging the local video rental down at the feed
store they just might get the idea).
I thought Dr. Lichtman's synopsis of the program was
excellent and appreciate him taking the time to put it all
together.

The one in Concord is only $5, while the following day he is giving the
same lecture in Milpitas for $20! If you want tickets, i suggest
calling our SAM 112 president, Doug Clark, at 415-933-3684, for the
Concord show. Enjoy it. By the way, if you find your way to the Vito
lecture in concord, then you'll be able to find your way to the regular
meeting place! Enjoy your trip, and I hope the road doesn't hit back!

Re: CARD-I-O-GRAMS
Right now all gastro brings to mind is FOOD! I is starvin'. I just
got back from the Castle. Went specifically to see Benjamin Garth, but
stayed to watch Scott Cervine (again) and "The Great Tomsoni & Co."
(again) and James Lewis.
Benjamin Garth did a nice Parlour mentalism act. Very impressive to
the audience. He also did a "magic square" of 16 blocks. Had the
audience select a number between 50 and 100 and instantly constructed
a magic square where all the columns added up to the audience number
(87), so did all the rows. When he showed that the diagonals also
added up the audience started to come unglued. Then he showed that the
four corners added up - pandemonium. THEN that the four squares in the
center added up - the house came apart! Nice work.
Scott and Tomsoni were their usual selves. Both are always a pleasure
to watch, even if you've seen 'em enough times to know all the lines.
James Lewis does some VERY NICE work with coins and bills. All pretty
much standard stuff, some Johnson, but VERY WELL DONE. His finale is
a coins thru table routine with a GLASS table. Really gets the
audience crazy.
AND I must have been doing something right - got hit on by two women
and two men! Think I'll wear this suit more often...
Sure wish the Castle served a late supper.

Re: CARD ON WINDOW
Well,
Yes, I for one have been trying to figure out exactly how
the card on train window effect was done. I guess before
speculating I'll haveta go back and review the tape. Pete Biro
hasn't seen the tape yet and is in the dark as to the
presentation, but I speculate he'll have an answer or two for us.
When he "shot" the cards at the glass I excected the old magi wax
stickum was gonna happen, so when I saw the reflection I was very
happy (thrilled) to see what he had done.
Been thinking about calling Bill Smith all day and
interviewing him as to his Magic Ventures of Long Beach
contribution to the special. Michael Ammar's and Max Maven's work
was obvious to me as well as Andre Kole's. I'm not sure which
effect Bill built (else why the call). As far as the Asrah, well,
you know. Would suspect John Gaughan built the "things go bump"
and hope Max or TA sets me straight on this.
Beautiful finish for the string work with the flash
covering the production. I thought the camera work was excellent
and the control-room director should be commended for the
closeups of the close-up.

Re: MAGIC
Wellsa,
I personally think that anything involving magicians has
to do with magic. Its all in the mind anyway. As far as Ga boiled
peanuts are concerned, just let me refer you to the civil war
song "Goober Peas" - which any son of the south knows are boiled
peanuts. There, I've sed it and I feel better.
What does model making have to do with magic? Well,
nothing if all magic was is cards, and I suspect that a playing
card is just a model of the real thing. Twood take a superb model
maker to make the die that makes a coin or a thimble. What is a
hand turned ball and vase but a model?
When I age walnut and mahogany, I call on skills I
learned partially from model railroading. The amateurish attempts
at antiquing I see from housewives at the craft shows where I
sometimes go to look around compared to the work that the skilled
artisans at the Smithsonian Institute ply makes me wonder who is
right. I decided to build in earnest because I saw nice folks
buying crappy woodwork from another nice guy who probably didn't
know any better himself. I felt bad for them as they proudly
showed me their prizes and all I could see was sloppy joinery and
hasty finish. A young man about the age of my oldest boy (23)
bought two wands from a schlock woodworker and I wanted to cry
for him wasting his money but I bit my lip. Charlie Randall
doesn't know it, but something he said to me on his first visit
made me take the final step and commit to getting some of my
stuff out there.
Speaking of Charlie, he called me this morning from
Chicage at The Magic Collectors Weekend to see if I wanted him to
pick up a book I'd been looking for. Man, how can life be any
better when you've got friends looking out for you just like the
Texas Rangers. Robert Parrish is there with him too. Parrish is
one of my most read and remembered magic writers. His gentle
style and his privileged association with Theo. Bamberg and
others make him a giant. Also there is Byron Walker and Jim
Steinmeyer plus many others, but Charlie promised to tell us all
about it when he gets home and back online.
My mother's from Lexington, VA where my granddad was on
the faculty of VMI. I'm now living in his house in Charlotte Hall
because he was too honorable to turn down a job offer at CHMA
(est 1774) after they met all his requirements. He died in here,
but I don't plan to. Til then, I haunt my shop, talk on the
phone, janitor the studio and check with my friends here online.
What's that got to do with magic? Everything.
Popo ahalalua,
Flash Gooberman

Re: CARD ON WINDOW
Well.....How bout this for a wild guess.---Since this was a one time
only stunt extensive set up could have been done. THe card could
havebeen threaded through with elastic invisible thread and mounted
below the window on the outside of the train. I don't kow who or how it
was released but that would have made it spring into just the right
position. I also noticed that the card had to be "peeled" from the
surface of the glass. Perhaps that was spray adhesive to keep it in
place after it got to the glass. Another possibility was that the card
was mounted outside on some kind of "arm" either wire or clear plastic
that pivoted it up into position. I liked the effect but guess he
didn't use the card in airplane window method devised here last fall as
the shade was not ever drawn on the window. these are just wild guesses
on my part. Anyone "in the know" want to respond and tell me if I'm

Re: LONG DISTANCE
Well, all I know is that I got this card in the mail - as an MCI
user already that offered me a chance to get in on this plan
(call america or something like that). The first hour is 8 bux
and around 6 bux an hour thereafter. Time on line with a 1 min
min. Rub is only these rates after 5pm and before 8am, but I just
got my bill and on several times times a day for short burst is
cheaper than one 5 or 6 min call. A minit at high noon was.13 and
2 min .34 4 min .86 so if I keep it at under 60 sec its nothing.
Get it. Remember AT&T gave me the idea in their commercials where
they said the cheap rates on MCI were only good for short one
minit calls and who makes a one minit call these days? I do now.
Thanks AT&T.

Re: MAGIC IN BRUNSWICK
Uh, yeah. That's right up there with putting a cigarette out in the
spectator's jacket and forgetting to use a thumb tip.
There was an interesting effect someone was doing with using a scissors
to cut thru the center seam of a borrowed jacket - the jacket was
covered (from the spectator's point of view) with a sheet of paper and
the scissors was seen to pierce completely thru the jacket and the
paper. The cut was then made and the jacket was "magically restored"
before it was revealed.

Re: CARD ON TRAIN WINDOW...
I don't know how he did it. Like everyone else, I have my suspicions.
I don't care how the card GOT on the window.
(or should that be, got STUCK on the window...)
What does grab my attention though, is the idea that the card that
appeared on the window was NOT the mate of the torn corner held so
carefully in view throughout the presentation. The question is, is it
possible to tear/cut a corner off a card, and have it closely match
another? I've watched the tape several times now, and I what I see is
David placing the card into the deck and NOT stealing it out (diagonal
palm shift or side steal or top palm or anything). He just puts the
card into the deck, and springs the deck at the window. Didn't see the
corner switched either. The only thing left, is that somehow it is
possible to tear a duplicate corner off a card.
I will be experimenting with this technique, and will post my results.
(Unless, that is, I've overlooked an already published chestnut, but if
that be the case, I'm sure someone out there will bang me over the head
with it...)

Now that the Desert magic Seminar has passed and I've had
time to let it all soak in I'd like to make a comment about some
of the things that struck me as good about the event. Granted, I
guess you could find some bad stuff, but you find bad everywhere
so when you run into good head on maybe it makes you appreciate
it more.
I can still feel the relaxed and friendly manner in which
Joe Stevens greeted me, a stranger to him except by telephone.
Everyone working his and the other dealer booths treated me
warmly whether I bought anything or not. I didn't partake in the
sandwich bar but it was thoughtful. The layout of the event was
convenient. Getting back and forth between three rooms was easy
and nobody minded the random coming and going from the events and
lectures. Was impressed with the obvious thoughtfulness extended
to the older magi present, especially the elderly. No uptight
people bothering me. Good security. The rapport of MAGIC! members
meeting for the first time. Good staging except for putting one
of the speaker's table and chair in the darkness unless he wanted
it that way, then cooool, but I digress and I think he was smart
enuf to know if he was in the dark or not. Plus, the board of
directors were kind enough to share their coffee with us in the
mornings. A model event.

I couldn't agree more. I particuliarly like the idea of the attendees
voting for the best act, it makes you feel more like you are a true
participant. I didn't make last year at the Mirage, but I heard the
format wasn't as enjoyable. I was ther 2 years ago (my first) and plan
to make it an annual event. You might also consider coming in Dec to
the Closeup Conjuring Conclave. Last year was the first and it was
really good, if you are more into closeup than stage. It is a much more
intimate affair than the seminar - limited to 100 attendees.
Gino will be setting it up this year, probably in November and needs
support form the attendees so he can get a good venue. I strongly
recommend this event if you like close-up. I got a chance to get
personal instruction from Tagaki (what a nice man he was) and meet some
really nice people.

Re: ROCKY MT MAGIC
Just spent the past coupla hours watching Doc Eason's
Rocky Mt. Magic Video with Gloria. I've seen Doc Eason work but
this is the first time I've had a chance to watch the video and
he pulls it off in spades. His personality comes through and I
still say that Doc Eason does the best looking bill in lemon

The vid is performance only for patrons at The Temple
Magic Bar in Aspen where Doc works most of the time. The man
knows how to work a bar. See it if you get a chance to see a real
live magician working for real live people. His ability to pull a
hundred bux outa his patrons is classic as is his version of the
card on ceiling. Michael Ammar must be proud and is credited as
one of the magic advisors when the credits roll. Some nice shots

Re: NEW FILE
Don Sandros has uploaded a new program to the files area. As it is one
I am familiar with, and use, let me take a few moments to describe it
to you.
TeleMagic is a sophisticated marketing/contact-management program that
Don has adapted for use by working professional magicians. It
maintains a database of your marketing calls, prompts you to perform
recalls, etc. The README.DOC file that comes with it includes
recommendations by folks like Doc Eason.
This is NOT a program that has ANYTHING to do with performing magic or
keeping track of effects (Like Randy Lund's MAGIC2DB). This program is
for those who are actively marketing their services and who make lots
of contact phone calls. As I mentioned, it happens that I use the same
program myself.
The version that Don has uploaded is a DEMONSTRATION version. It
allows you to view the functions that TeleMagic performs and to
determine if the full version - which you can then purchase from Don -
would be useful to you.
Downloading and installing this program is NOT for the faint of heart!
There are two files to download:
TMAGIC1.EXE and TMAGIC2.EXE
Each is over 200,000 bytes in size. Once you have both, you install
them by:
o Creating a new subdirectory on your hard disk
(Example: TMAGIC)
o Changing directories to enter the new subdirectory
(Example: CD\TMAGIC)
o Copying the files into this subdirectory
o Running TMAGIC1 and then TMAGIC2
The above steps will create the program. You can then run it by typing
MAGIC
Since this program requires a file transfer of almost 500,000 bytes,
I'm sure that Don would also be willing to send a copy by mail if you
contacted him via private message here on MAGIC!
This sample version will allow you to examine the program by entering
about 20 records. If you decide you like it, you have to contact Don
to purchase the real full-size copy.

Re: CARD ON TRAIN WINDOW...
Aw gee, that would take all the fun out of it! Lemme ponder ways for
tearing a chunk out of a card and have it match a previously torn card.
That'll keep me busy enough not to bid against myself for the Goldston
Annual, heh heh.
I have discovered a couple of interesting things on the torn card
front. One, it IS possible to tear corners off of cards that match
each other if, the cards are held together very closely, and the tears
are made a small distance at a time. Also interesting is the fact that
(at least with Bicycle cards) if the tear is made from the FACE of the
card to the back, the face surface will be clean, and the back of the
card will be, uh, feathered. This leaves enough of a surface to put
tiny dots of superglue to hold the torn corner in place. I will be
testing various methods and types of stickums to see what will cover
the tear from the front, and still allow pseudo-tearing without leaving
much (if any) noticible residue.
