MAGIC! - 23

The following was compiled from the magician's message section of
MAGIC!(tm). MAGIC! was an electronic communications system for
magicians. Access was free, except for normal telephone company
charges. New registrants were required to leave a comment with
their name, address, phone number and a brief resume of their magic
background to be considered for membership. The material herein
should be treated as confidentially as other magic information.

Keen insight into the mind of a truly great performer can be
gained from reading Tommy Wonder's message regarding Zombie Balls
(# 1347, relayed from the Netherlands via MAGIC-NL).

This volume includes a number of recommendations for magic for
young performers, including Pete Biro's version of Stab a Deck
(# 1006), Richard Hart's double deal with queens (# 1028),
Michael Ammar's Disguised Aces (# 1038), David Lichtman's
suggestions for non-card tricks along with some recommended
books and videos (# 1039), Max Maven's suggestions for children's
tricks (# 1051), and Richard Hart's book and trick suggestions
(# 1054). David Lichtman describes some toy store props in # 1187.
In message # 1584, Pete Biro traces the publication of ring tricks
(linking rings, ring from cheek to stick) back to 1584 and Scot's
Discovery of Witchcraft. In the later parts of the file, there is
a very active discussion concerning the inclusion of escapology and
mentalism in magic. And, in message # 1487, Stan Lake begins a
discussion of the Elmsley Count.

Tabby Crabb's on-the-scene reports on FFFF begin with message # 1083.
MAGIC-NL (Netherlands) provides two more of the historic letters from
Pete Biro to Fred Kaps (# 1243 and 1244). Reviews of Vito Lupo's
lecture at the Magic Castle, and a resulting discussion of the role
of preparation begin at message # 1261. Some hints on getting
quality promotional pictures start with message # 1036. Steve Kucera
begins a thread on humor in different cultures in message # 1091.
David VanVranken provides the last word on Copperfield's Card on Train
Window in message # 1098, complete with a photo in the files
(T_WINDOW.PCX). Scott Cram suggests the idea of magic trading cards
(# 1017). A series of questions and answers about Houdini spreads
throughout the set of messages, involving Houdini expert Manny Weltman.
The conversation on the quality of magic books, began in MAGIC-22,
continues with Bill Wells message, # 1387.

There is, of course, the usual MAGIC! gossip, chit-chat and banter.

Re: HELP

Ok, here you go. EASY... get a rough/smooth svengali (or regular one,
don't matter) but make sure it is a bicycle not the usual gaffed
brands. Have the card taken by DRIBBLING not riffling the end like all
svengali pitchmen do. You dribbled cards into a pile, asking someong to
say stop.... At stop, they look at force card, put right back.
Have here say... "I will not shuffle the cards, as I have memorized the
position in the deck" drop rest of cards on top. Have someone else
carefuly square deck, she keeps peeking at side saying, "I am keeping
my eye on the card!" Then she says "To make it difficult, would you
take one of the castle paper place mats and wrap the deck... that way
I can't see your card" She picks up a knife and stabs, carefully into
the side, saying "I still know abouat where the card is, lets se ehow
close I came" Maybe you step in and open th epackage at the knife and
show the knife is next to the chosen card.
During applause, etc. yoiu put the pieces away, paper aside, etc. and
put the deck in your pocket DONT MAKE A MOVE OF IT but without saying
anything bring it (switch for non gaffed deck) back out and just set
aside. Let it lay.

Re: HELP

You must be joking. First of all, I doubt there exists a decent
Cannibal Card routine that is remotely within the capability of a
seven-year-old. More importantly, why on earth would you want to put
card magic of that level of sophistication into the hands of a child?
What would such a performance indicate about the work of an adult card
performer? There is no shortage of beginners material in print -- most
easily found in books specifically designed for the young amateur.

Lin Searles must be spinning in his grave.

Re: LUNCH W/MOJO FOLKS...

Met some new magi, but they don't have modems.... Was at Lisa Menna's
for lunch and others were: Dick Newton, long time close up worker, and
Jeffrey Korst, who performs while Ice Skating. Had along run in Japan
and has been here for awhile, originally from Lockport, Illinois.
We heard this insane noise outside, Lisa looked out and said, "Hey look
guys, they're repaving the street... I gotta run down and put TWO
DIAMONDS in the wet tar...." She did.
If one of guys did that the construction workers would have tossed us
into the melting tar... but they "helped" her implant two large fake
diamonds in the street. Great. When she came back up she said, "Well I
guess I gotta use the 2 of Diamonds as my force card!"
Her previous residence had a card carved into the wet cement of the
sidewalk! A full time Magicienne, she is.
She's booked to work New York, then will visit the IBM and zip over to
the FISM this summer!
Hey, and the food was good too!

Re: MAGIC TRADING CARDS

Here's a bizarre idea. What about magic trading cards. Lately, I've
heard about everything from Desert Storm cards to Twin Peaks cards to
Rock/Rap music cards. Why not magicians? Can't you just picture it?
"I'll trade you my double of Blackstone AND Princess Tenko for your
Copperfield card." "If you throw in Sigfried and Roy, it's a deal!"

They could have vital statistics on the back, and fun facts like: "In
his 90-91 season tour, David Copperfield cut off his finger doing a
comedy rope effect."

Just a bizarre lateral thought. You get the wierdest ideas when you
create your own effects....

Well well. It's nice to know that Pete. Nice to know I'm not the only

hours a day for a couple of years now (really!). I guess this
obsession started after viewing Earl Nelson's video on the pass. That
jiggle pass of his still makes my eyes bug out. I've seen so
gawd-awful many routines which use a pass, everything from Vernon to
Cervon and back through Kaufman and Racherbaumer and Marlo... And I've
had to bypass those routines just 'cause only THE PASS will do. No
other work around. And I think I've burned all books that even come
close to mentioning a "top card cover pass". EEEK!

Re: HELP

Marvin, a great card effect for a 7 year old is the old:

Start with three queens face down on top of the deck.
Fourth queen buried in pack. Have her fan the deck (or just
run through the cards) with the faces towards her, and pull
out the fourth queen and lay it face down on the table.
Hand the deck to spectator with request that they deal the
cards face down on the table, stopping "when ever they feel like
it" (should make sure they deal at least 10 cards...).
Then she has them deal the cards face down into three piles,
continue until all cards are exhausted. She turns over her
prediction card, then has spectator turn over top card of all
three piles. The all match. Simple, no sleights, easy set-up.

Hope this helps.

Hi Richard. Do you know the card trick where you use the Ace of Clubs
and the Ace of Spades to disguise the Ace of hearts to look like the
Ace of Diamonds? In the meantime, the Ace of Diamonds is really on top
of the deck? Then you turn the three aces face down, and put the Ace
of Diamonds (?) in the middle (actually the ace of hearts), and one ace
on top, one on the bottom, yet when you cut theeck once, they are all
together again in the middle.
When I've taught this to kids, they've considered the camouflaging of
the Ace to be very clever.

Re: HELP

Marvin -

Why does it have to be a card trick? When my two year old (now 2-1/2)
wanted to do tricks I realized that he couldn't manipulate/hold a deck.
Dante Larsen suggested switching to coin magic and he now does about
three card tricks (and a color changing silk). Might I suggest the
following:

The classic salt shaker vanish

A coin fold - you place a coin in a piece of paper, fold the paper in
front of the spectator and the coin vanishes from inside the
"envelope." The concept can be found in Scarne's Magic Tricks,
although he burns the paper and you might not want to do that part.

Silk or rope tricks

There are some good books for young magicians:

The Klutz Book of Magic (Yeah, I know I'm gonna hear about this) by
Jeff Busby and others.

Now You See It, Now You Don't by Bill Tarr (perhaps a bit too
advanced).

There are also some good videos:

The Magic Secrets Video by Dan Witkowski is PERFECT for her, but I
don't know if it is still available. It was done as a promotional item
by General Mills. You're in the biz, so you might be able to track it
down thru Magiccom Home Video Products, Minneapolis, Mn.

I believe Michael Ammar did a magic video for children. He might be
able to tell you about it.

Several of our members use Macs. Others use Amigas. And there are
some with a lot of different systems. It doesn't need to be MS-DOS
compatible in the slightest. The KEY is getting the communications
software (odd that they have a modem but no software). If Richard

purchasing some, but usually public domain communications software is
better than the purchase stuff.

Anyway, your friend is welcome here, even with a Mac. DO remind 'em to

Re: HELP

Given that at age seven she's not going to be able to plow through a
lot of text, you're probably better off buying her some simple prop.
Royal Magic makes a pocket-sized drawer box, not particularly
expensive, that is easy to operate. Several of the Tenyo items are
within a young child's grasp, for example their recent rope trick.
If you're really sold on the ide of card magic, some (by no means
all) of the material in the Scarne book is viable for that age. Also,
much of the magic (card and other) in the Severn books. Your best bet
is to look it over, choose a couple of items, and teach them to her.
Several years ago I ghost-wrote "The Blackstone Card Trick System"
which was marketed by Pressman Toys. It comes with an audiotape, a pack
of cards, and some simple gimmicks. Most of the tricks can be done by
a young kid; you can perform the others... (One of the amusing things
about that project was showing the material I'd developed to Harry, and
fooling him with some of the effects.)

Re: NOTHING TO DO WITH MAGIC

A good photographer is worth every nickel of his or her fee. Photos
are often a performer's calling card. Most often, booking people look
at a photo BEFORE they decide whether or not to commit a few moments of
their time to watching your tape! Photos reproduced in newspapers,
etc. can greatly influence potential ticket-buying audience members.
YOUR PHOTO SHOULD PRESENT YOUR PERFORMING "IMAGE" CLEARLY. You should
be able to look like your photo when you show up for a gig!
...I could go on and on...but I'll spare you...
.
.
Concerning photo duplication, there are several good ones in town. One
of the more reasonable is Quantity Photo on Hollywood Blvd., East of
the Hollywood Fwy. (They do glossy or matte finish in any quantity)
They will print your name, agent, etc. at the bottom.
If you want lithograph prints, (I usually use them for public
appearance giveaways, autographs, etc), you might try Anderson Graphics
on Woodman in North Hollywood/Van Nuys area.

Re: NOTHING TO DO WITH MAGIC

The worst thing is a picture of a magician holding something that makes
no sense to a laymen. Usually just a good face is better than holding
some dumb prop, that "still" means nothing. Tabby's pic is great, the
main thing is the backlight separating the hair from the background.
I have seen great performers with cards fanned in front of a fluffy
white shirt and when reproduced you can't see what the guy is holding.
If you can afford it, find an ADVERTISING photographer with a studio
that does glamour etc. I used a guy in San Francisco that usually gets
over $1000 a shot... but he had owed me a small favor, and on a quiet
day said come over. He said, the only rule is, after I finish shooting
you the way YOU want, I want to shoot you the way I WANT.
Needless to say, the stuff he shot the way HE SAW ME was 100 times
better. Killer stuff in fact, so good that I changed my entire style,
look, wardrobe to match what he saw. And my comedy went even better as
I had A "LOOK" from then on!
Very important.

the value of a really good professional photographer over just someone

There are some screws at the bottom of a Beta cassette that will allow
you to open the shell. What happens when you try it? Do springs pop
up? I don't know. And cleaning the tape would be very complex. I'd
suggest you call Sony Tech Support for advice. Of course, with the
condition of your "ratty" tapes, you don't have much to loose.

Sorry I didn't get anything up last night but its been hard finding
a proper jack for this laptop. As you can probably guess I am in
Beautiful Buffalo by the Lake attending the 21st Gathering of
The Few in honor of the Forks Hotel which is closing monday morn
(receivership) and the last (prob) FFFF to be held at the historic
Pony Express stop when east was west.

The largest attendance in years (stellar too) with a draw from most
of the free world. Ray Mertz made sure I met most all whom I had not
previously been aquainted.

Harry Lorraine lectured last night in a marathon which lasted over
three hours upstairs while many remained at the bar downstairs shoot-
ing the breeze and bending elbows. Around 7:30 pm most of the
gathers started showing up and the Forks (which is now a rat hole)
came to life.

Things are really set to start tonight and run all day tomorrow (Sat)
so you haven't missed much so far and I'll try to get this online
early (typing this sitting on bed using copy con) and then file
another report tonight.

MAGIC! users in attendence from all over USA.
Scott Wells, Dave Williamson, Gary Ouellet, Howie Schwarzman, Harrison
Carroll, etc who have said hello. The first show starts in a little
while and I'm now back at the hotel after going over to the forks to
pick up the modem. I think Doc Eason will be signing on soon too as
I explained how to get in and out FAST.
Wanted to touch base with everyone today and will post a full report
(at least from the tabman's POV) tonight and again tomorrow night.

I will not be downloading any messages until I get back to Spring Hill
Sunday nite so if I owe you a reply I'll get to it Monday morning first
thing.

Mo Later, tabman

Thanks for the offer to review my tape. It is my belief

Re: BENT WOOD

Yo Tabbman

Well fate reared its ugly head and last nights show
didnt get taped. I will have to issue a rain check
till June when we are scheduled to roll tape again.

I will rent Urban Cowboy this weekend and will jump
up every time I see you and shout "hey I know that
guy". I imagine this will annoy the Wizette
considerably.

Have you seen the Jamaican version of said film
called Herbin' Cowboy?

I will contact my pop soon about wood bending. I was
going to do same last year and we discussed it at some
length. I believe he talked about a bending jig that
was immersed in water so the wood never lost the
heat. I dont recall the details but will pass them
on as they come in.

Although I work in the wood industry I regret that I
am not as skilled as I would like to be. We make
portable massage tables at work. Its a good product
but not particularly fine woodworking. I am teaching
myself furniture making at home. I bought this house
less than a year ago and its the first time in my
adult life that I have had a shop to work with.

I am presently working on a coffee table of Zebra
wood, curly redwood burl and ebony. It will be a
simple design and the beauty of it will be in the
blending of the three woods. I am also teaching
myself wood turning.

God I wish I had three more lives to pursue all the
things I love, but for now I will focus on the ones
that are most important. At 28 years old I still
have enough time to accomplish what I need to get
done and hopefully leave some sort of mark on the
Earth that will say " Steve was here".

OK here's a strange sort of discussion.

I am trying to do some home work on humour in different
countries. How do I go about finding out what makes
English people laugh, Japanese people laugh etc..

Are there any books on translating humour in different
cultures? I know that British humour is somewhat
different than American humour and would assume that
the same is true of most cultures.

Its an odd question I know but I would appreciate the
opinions of those in the know.

Chris Carey's book, "Find the Stuff that's You", has a section on how
to publicize yourself. It mentions you can have photos showing you
doing your favorite tricks but under no circumstances should you look

around as prices can vary by 100%. You might consider a good amateur

I've Got it!! The Final solution to the Card on Train window!!
Geno was right!
David attached the card to a pull from his sleeve, down his back,
onto to the floor! A passing Ticket Taker picked up the card,
mistaking it for a ticket stub. Seeing it was only another torn
card, he tossed it out the back door where David's assistant
caught it.

Running precariously across the top of the train car, he attached
the card to a flyswatter. Dangling by his toes, he hung over the
side and SLAPPED it onto the window just in the nick of time!!

I've got proof!

Thanks to the magic of computers, I've been able to capture the
event on disk and with enough magnification and color
"enhancement", actually see what took place!

I'm uploading a file called T_WINDOW.PCX This is a 320x200x256
VGA file but I know some of you can view it.

Seriously, I can now capture live video and convert it to VGA and
SVGA formats in GIF, PCX, and other forms.

PLEASE let me know if anyone is interested and I'll work on some
more images for MAGIC!

Thanks,
  David

Re: INTERNATIONAL HUMOUR

There are indeed some major cultural differences regarding what is
perceived as being funny. My own experiences working in about twenty
countries have shown that it's possible to develop a reasonably
reliable instinct for deciding what is likely to work and what will
fail. This is difficult to describe; essentially, you adjust your
mindset based on the surroundings, and filter the jokes through that.
Afterwards, you must still occasionally check to make sure that a
specific informational frame-of-reference is there.
A few weeks ago I did a banquet show for an audience which was about
60% Americans and 40% other countries. I did a line which I _knew_ was
not going to be funny to the foreign attendees, as it references a
purely American turn of phrase. So, when (as expected) only 60% of the
house laughed at the line, I followed up with a (scripted) ad lib,
"We've just lost the Europeans..." This got a solid laugh from
everyone -- the Americans because they realized the truth of what I'd
just observed, and the Europeans because they appreciated that I knew
the line was culturally restricted.

Re: OLD HENNING SHOWS

Videotape is very delicate. Probably even more sensitive than film.
Somewhere between dry film and wet film, probably. You might consider
putting disposable cotton gloves over the rubber gloves (seriously).
The stuff on the reels is probably OK, once you get the surface gunk
off of it. Of course there is no telling what else may have "leaked"
into the tape. There are a number of small parts in the shell and I
believe that on Beta the reels are reverse wrapped. Tell you what --
I've got some bad Beta lying around here. Lemme do some brain surgery
(amatuer) and get back to you.

probably be an annual job -- but if we don't have it reprogrammed by
next year I'll know better and take a few days off of work to do it.

Re: OLD HENNING SHOWS

OK, Biro-san -- here is the real stuff on shelling your Betas. Keep in
mind that I learned this by experimentation, not by finding out how to
do it right by asking a competent authority. Also, no warranties,
express or implied, are provided for this information. The user of the
information does so at his own risk and no damages or liability are
assumed by the author.

Er... what the heck was I gonna tell you? Oh, yeah! Beta cassettes,
how to open.

  * Put on rubber gloves. Place clean disposable cotton film-handling
     gloves on over these.

  * Turn the shell upside down with the tape door pointing away from
you. You will notice a small rectangular slot at the far right
corner (not the semi-rectangle with the screw at the bottom of
it - further to the far right).

  * Notice the angled piece of plastic inside this rectangle. With
a small screwdriver, pull the angled plastic toward you. This
     will release the hinged lid.

  * Open the hinged lid. This will release the tape locks. Draw some
tape out (carefully!) so that you can easily reach the label
behind the tape. The label helps hold the shell together.

  * Cut the label along the line where the shell halves join. Be
careful not to let go of the hinged door or to allow the tape
to become folded, spindled, or mutilated.

  * Retighten the tape by either turning the right hub clockwise or
     the left hub counter-clockwise.

  * Allow the hinged door to close gently.

  * Lay the shell upside down and unscrew the four cross-point screws.

  * Hold the shell together as you open the hinged door again.

  * Turn the shell over carefully and collect the four screws.

  * Remove the top of the shell - do NOT attempt to do this upside-
     down!

  * Lay the top and bottom of the shell down seperately.

  * Photograph the interior of the shell or draw a diagram, carefully
noting the manner in which the tape is threaded and identifying
     the interlocks.

  * Remove the tape and the tape reels and clean the shell.

  * Replace the tape and the tape reels and put the shell back
     together.

  * Make a copy of the tape on the FIRST PASS. Do not depend on
     the cleaned tape.

Does that help?

it seemed to me he was fairly adept at manipulating them. He was a
tremendous showman so I don't know why he couldn't have performed just
about any kind of magic in a spectacularly entertaining fashion.
In my opinion, I think escape artists are just as much a branch of
magic as is say, card flourishes or mentalism or anything else. He had
his methods which he kept secret from the public so there was quite a
sense of mystery and awe about his performances. It's not as if he
walked around with master keys and picks saying "I can open any lock

Re: TOY STORES

All sorts of interesting and possibly useful items can be found in a
large toy store. Here's a small sample...

OBJECT SHAPED ERASERS - Erasers are made in all sorts of shapes and
sizes. I found a blister pack today with three erasers in it - one was
a short ruler, one was a very realistic looking small tube similar to
a tooth paste tube, labeled "Clean Blue," and the third was a miniature
"card deck" smaller than a Bicycle 404 mini, about the size of a
matchbox - has brown edges but a Queen of Hearts face.

By the way, a long time ago someone mentioned a "card shaped eraser"
that sounded more like a full-size card. If anyone finds these, I'd be
interested in a couple.

GLITTER PENS - These pens are gold, silver, blue, purple, etc. glitter
in a soft tube about 1/2" in diameter and about 4" long (estimate).
They have a cap with a pocket clip. I think they make interesting
magic wands - after all, how many bright looking magic wands have
pocket clips? Good for close-up.

BICYCLE MINIATURE CARDS IN GREEN - Busby mentioned these on here a few
weeks ago as part of the Bicycle Card discussion. Available in toy
stores they can prove an interesting addition to some miniature card
effects.

FOAM BALLS - Not quite sponge balls, there is a brand named Rawlings
that is very soft - somewhere between a sponge ball and a "super soft"
sponge ball. They compress nicely, except that they uncompress a bit
slow. An interesting posibility is that they seem to readily take a
static charge and can be made to easily roll around, following your
hand, on a table.

Just a few thoughts.

can see it. I will try running it under another display program to see
if I can get a clearer image. Targa 16 is a nice capture board! We
used ComputerEyes at Desert Magic. Live!(tm) on the Amiga is a VERY
GOOD "board" but I've had problems converting the Amiga captures to
PCX, so we don't use it for transportable images.

Re: GENII SUBSCRIPTION

One wonders whether Eugene Berger's magic might be better suited to a
Halloween/October issue. I've been getting GENII at magic stores, and
have noticed the great difference Dante has made! If you're becoming a
magician again, I hear there's a superb musical chair prediction effect
in the April issue that's easy to do, and very effective and versatile.
Must have been a great guy to come up with that one (OOOH, sudden burst
of ego!).

My issues date back to the David Copperfield issue back in June, 1988.
Can't wait to have it come to me, instead of vice-versa.

Re: MAC ADVICE

The best Mac advice is to get an Amiga. While the Mac may put
comporably priced computers to shame, the Amiga is putting professional
systems like the Quantel Paintbox.

As a matter of fact, at the MacWorld Expo here in SF, the Amiga was the
star of the show! When a local TV station did a story on it, most of
the story centered around the Amiga! On the Amiga they were running the
Video Toaster. The toaster manipulates video images on a broadcast
quality scale. Even most major ADO effects! And it won't be coming out
for the Mac, because it would entail at the very least putting the
Amiga on a card for the Mac!

If he still persists in using a Mac, tell him to try EggHead software.
They have many excellent communications progs for the Mac!

Re: YOUR OPINION PLEASE.

As to Houdini's prowess as a magician -- for most of us it would be
theorizing, since we have only seen films of him, and not very good
ones at that. As far as an escapologist being a magician -- I would
say not. In the Selbit Siberian Chain Escape, for example, or the
Kellar tie, something odd is going on, but it isn't magic; in the
latter you don't know how the performer is putting his hand back into
the tight ropes, but there's no sense of impossibility, only of skill.
Escapology is a related art -- but in most cases can't be classified as
magic.

I feel that escape artists, like mentalists, are performers in vaguely
related arts -- but I don't think that mentalism or escapes are
branches of magic any more than musical comedy is a branch of opera.
They may at times use some of the same techniques, but they are quite
different theatrical arts.

All the contemporary newspaper reviews that I have read, along with
those whom I have interviewed who saw Houdini perform magic said that
he was a very fine magician. He may not have been great like Keller,
but with his brand of showmanship, he made the impossible possible.
As for film. I have almost two hours of Houdini film taken off 35mm
prints. Clear as a bell. These are a little of everything. Home
movies, newsreels, outtakes from his films, etc. (I have Keller doing

Re: RDMAGIC PROGRAM

David - here is an alpha version of RDMAGIC, it works pretty well.
The README file is just a thought, see what you think.
The MAGC0428.LOG file is what I captured last night and converted
into MAGC0428.TXT. You can use F for finding a word in any message. e.g
'coin' will give you the first message containing the word coin, N will
give the Next, etc.

The right/left arrows allow you to walk through a thread. There is one
slight problem though. The threads aren't consistant. E.G. Msg #795
shows 620 <- 795 -> 797, however Msg #792 shows 500 <- 792 -> 795.
So that if you are on 792, going right gives you 795, but you can't
go back (<-) to 792, you go back to 500 instead - Any thoughts.

Sorry it took so long to get this thing going, but I had a pointer
problem that caused the program to crash the system sometimes. I
finally found it last night - C pointer problems are nasty to find,
the compiler and debugger just can't help.

Try this program out and let me know what you think, if you are at
the lecture today, maybe we will get a chance to talk.

Bye for now - Burton the Bizzare

Re: FFFF

There's a meeting today to see if the Forks will survive.
It looks doubtful, but.....

Last night we (Ray Mertz, Doc Eason and ) closed the
Forks Hotel for the last time after the 21st Annual FFFF
Convention.

Gazzo Makee does the best Cups and Balls I've ever seen.
This I witnessed while Gazoo (from Boston) was performing for a
lay audience. His triple finale leaves six large oranges and a
cantalope on the table. Doc tolde me he watched this routine from
three different vantage points and missed the cantalope load each
time.

You'll have to ask one of the other MAGIC! bbsers who was
there to tell you about the lectures and formal shows because I
spent most of my time in the bar one on one mostly learning the
correct grip with which to deal bottoms from Gary Plants (thanx a
million Gary for your help and I'll get back to you after I've
perfected the first step as outlined), Mike O'Dowd, Gazzo and a
couple of others. The three best (whom I got to work with) all
did it basically the same way and is indetectable when done with
the proper rhythm.

Saw friends Lou Gallo, Harrison Carroll, Keith Walker,
Randy DiMarco, Joe Ryan, Ray Mertz, Doc Eason, Mike O'Dowd, Ed
Eckl and had a chance to meet some potential friends too and to
talk with a few more about joining us here...Daryl said he'd be
signing on when he gets in from this road trip around mid may.

I cannot describe (even if you've been before) the final
chapter in Forks history. The room was absolutely electric and
people were saying goodbye to the walls, floors, and the
horseshoe bar where Eddie entertained so many.

Ray Mertz did the last behind the bar set which was video
taped as Ray was one of the fine Fork's magicians mentored by
Eddie. Ray worked Saturday nights there for years before
branching into lecturing and corporate work.

Re: NOTHING TO DO WITH MAGIC

Good Photo's (my other hobby and of 30 yrs not just 1 1/2 is
photography) can be had two ways. In either case look at the
photographers work to see if their style matches what you want.
.
1. You can hire a good professional and pay full fare. A pro should
guarantee his work and if get the right guy you will be pleased. Be
sure he is into promo work and has done what you want before. This is
especially true if you are looking for off beat lighting or special
effects.
.
2. If you can't afford a pro and still want good work try a local
camera club. Some of the "amateurs" there moonlight and any good
camera clubs will have some folks who can help. To find out about them
see your local photo store (not K-Mart the place they sell the pro
stuff) and they will give you a number. For standard portraits and the
usual these folks will be as good and maybe better than the pro's but
the range is likely to be more limited. Camera club competition does
not reward originality, but it does produce technically competent
photogs.
.
The same camera store you talked to about the camera club can put you
onto a good custom photo finisher. Prices are higher than K-Mart, but
if you get a good one the quality will be better too. You may have to
shop around here. I know some local custom shops that do a super job
and some that make K-Mart look good. Ask to see samples.
.
Also, another word of advice. Make sure you own the negatives and that
you have full rights of reproduction. Especially with a pro he may
want to own the negatives and then the only way to get more prints is
to come back to him.....very expensive.
.
Oh yea, third way...invest $5000 in camera gear and another $3000 in a
good darkroom as well as a few years of practice (sound familiar) and
do your own......
.

Re: FFFF

Wayne,
I did have fun. Actually, one of the best times magic
yet. The thing that I really appreciated were being approached by
some of magic's "young lions" because they recognized my name
(name tag) from reading stuff from MAGIC! which is evidently
being passed around.
Tried to keep ya'll posted on what was going on, but
appologize for the sloppy work I did. I have an reason, but my
dad drummed into me as a kid "there are no excuses" so I'll skip
them and will try to get a good portable rig for my next solo
jaunt.
The Fork's closing was unadvertised and was a surprise to
many who attended this year thinking it was just another 4F. The
bar was open under duress and I've gotta hand it to the staff
there for taking such good, friendly care of everybody. Obie
O'Brien is a doll and runs the show like a camp counselor with
his whistle. The talent in that old building was simply
staggering, humbling, gratifying, mystifying and friendly.
Ray Mertz commented that if a Scud hit the Forks that
Saturday night it would set Close-up Magic back a hundred years
and in a lotta waze he's right.
Must admit, that if I ever hear another table hopper (no
names, but I know) being downright sexist and degrading to women
in the manner I observed at the table next to mine I'll step in
(her husband didn't but I bet he has an extreme dislike for ALL
magicians now) and break his wand, stomp his chop cup and shred
his cards. Oh yeah, NO MORE 4 ACE TRICKS EVER. Pleeeeeaaassseeee.
The real work was quietly going on in small groups all
over the building and I was LUCKY enuff to have some of the
coolest guys stop by and visit (and help) the tabman with the
Mechanics Grip.
Buffalo, NY has an amazing concentration of magicians and
lovers of magic I've witnessed outside the LA area and I guess
this too is a tribute to the late Eddie Fechter and his love for
the art and the ease with which he initiated the fortunate few
who made the pilgrimage to the Forks and stayed.
I am convinced that Fechter's Finger Flinging Frolic will
live on and continue to be one of the best Close-up conventions
in magic though it probably won't (I will not dismiss the
possibility that the boys from Buffalo will again do the
impossible and reserect the Forks Hotel a third time) be at The
Forks again. They've already started scouting new locations in
Buffalo, but it just won't be the same.
When I first got there (before anyone else just about)
and took a look at the building I wanted to come on back home,
but when THESE MAGICIANS started arriving the building took on a
splendor unequalled by even the Taj Mahal. IT IS THE PEOPLE that
make it what it is. These Buffalo guys loved Eddie and what he
did for them by helping them become great. THEY WILL KEEP IT
GOING.
Yes, I had fun but more than that I learned something
else about what I call HEART. When The Forks was full of these
special people, the fallen plaster and sagging floors vanished
and appearing in their place were polished hardwood and crystal
orbs of light.

Uh oh, here comes Obie with his whistle. The final show
is about to start.
                           Your friend,
                            the tabman

FRED! YOU ARE BEHIND! TODAY I GOT YOUR LETTER... LAST NIGHT I FINALLY
GAVE UP AND TOOK THE PILES OF BOOKS MAGAZINES, TRICKS AND GIMMICKS
THAT I HAVE GATHERED ALL THIS SUMMER AND LITERALLY SHOVED THEM INTO A
BIG BOX AND TOOK THEM DOWN IN THE BASEMENT TO REST UNTIL THE WINTER!
.
I have had no time at all to sort things out! I went to the Buffalo
Convention then, as you know, Hawai and then to Abbotts, all after
Europe! Then taking pictures has been busy, and I had to combine a
couple of trips to Atlanta and went back to Cleveland to do a show,
etc. etc....
.
Ken <> wrote me telling me what a great time he had with you.
He should get out of the studio more often!
.
Glad you liked the GHOST DEAL! Will up-date you with better
instrcution sheets we are getting printed this week. There is a
version with a Zarrow shuffle face up face down instead of the slop
shuffle....also Cervon handling which is different. I don't know
if it is as commercial, as it is a bit slow at the climax point...
but you can try it. Ken ordered 100 sets for the Margate convention.
So Martin <> is working like mad. Did you get the
version of roughing fluid on backs so you can show the cards on both
sides??? We will send you a new set soon anyway.
.
Ken saw your Egg bag <> and wants one from Martin for
he and Frank <>.
<>
Too bad the ring effect is so slow coming... when you advertise and
cannot deliver it has a bad effect on business.
.
Marconick is here, we did a tourist bit over the last week-end. Emil
<> had him come over with a promise of 15 lectures, plus
Tannen's...but it turned out to be only 5 lectures...so Nick is not
overjoyed. He lectures tonight in Sacramento for Bob Brown. I tried
to call him, but he left already and is flying there. I should have
told him earlier not to, as it is only an hour and fifteen minutes
drive by car!!
.
(Just rang his hotel, but he checked out)
.
LECTURE NOTES: <> OK, WILL CHECK ON THE
STACK OF PRINTED STUFF OVER ON THE DESK AND SENT WHAT I HAVE TO YOU.
I SENT KEN A COUPLE OF DOZEN BUT NEVER HEARD IF HE GOT THEM. There
was a line left out of the ASCANIO SPREAD trick.... got one letter,
so I sent the boy the correct work. I put the fact into the magazine
"Son of Bat" so that anybody that got it, I will send the right
info!
.
Have a possible series of trade shows to do. Not 100% but a good
change...good $$$ too. I flew to Cleveland Ohio and did a cocktail
party for a racing client, who has a group of 5 trade shows and he
liked the things I did...so if the company gives him the OK, I will
do the shows. They figure they can pay $600 plus travel, etc. for
3 days at each of 5 shows...maybe more??? This would be worth doing!
.
Topper Martin comes for "It's Magic". Johnny Thompson too, if he is
available. I saw Johnny and Norm Nielsen on the Carrol Channing show
in Reno...TERRIFIC! See you in Paris???
.
Signed Pete.

Re: BIRO LETTER #5

                        << PETE BIRO LETTERHEAD >>
.
Dated: 20 September 1972.
.
Fred:
.
Derek Dingle was here last week and did, what I consider, the finest
version of the MacDonald Aces I have ever seen. Basically the same
particularity at the finish.... but the best LEAD-IN with no monkey
moves or face-up face-down piles!
.
SET-UP: Remove the 4-Aces from the deck. Place them face-up on table,
from face to back the order is D-C-H-S. (the old Delands Card Have
Superiority memory system). Then in hand the double faced ACES front
to back Ace of Diamonds, Clubs and Haert. Turn these over onto the
face-up deck with spot sides showing. (Remove the duplicate spot
cards from the top section of the deck, so they do not show up).
You can , if you wish, add-on the three fakes, and cull-out the
regular Aces. Put Aces on face of deck.
.
Take each Ace, one-at-a-time, and drop Face down onto table. This
shows face and back. Ace of spades is last. Keep a neat pile,
squared. Then you just count 12 face up cards from the face of the
deck onto the face-down aces. However, as you count the 4th (first
non faked card) onto the pile, you jog it down about one-half inch.
Continue to deal, so that is the only down-jogged card.
Carefully pick-up all card (Aces and 12 face-up cards), turn them
over in your hands, square-up, with Ace of Diamonds at the face.
As you square, get a break below the jogged card (note: above break
you have from top to bottom, four normal Aces, the three fakes,
Aces showing, one X-card, back showing. Below break: 8 X-cards).
.
THE SWITCH (BEAUTIFUL): Holding all cards above break in right hand,
thumb at rear, fingers at front, thumb off onto left hand: face down
cards, the Ace of Diamonds, then Clubs, then Hearts, then drop Ace
of spades, and the fakes under it, onto the packet. Immediately
spread the top 4 cards into a fan, on the packet, showing the Ace
of Spades on top, followed by 3 fake-Aces and the face down X-card
hides the three face-up normal aces. THIS WILL FOOL YOU AS YOU DO
ITT!!!
.
Deal the four Aces onto the table, Spade where you want it as the
leader! Turn packet in your hand face-up. Now you casually show all
the faces as being different cards, and seemingly all the backs. In
straddle grip, cards in right hand, peel off the FACE AND THE REAR
cards at same time into the left hand, follow by counting off about
3 more, single handedly. Flop the five cards in left hand to a
face-down position (you can flip-over with remaining cards in the
right hand) and DROP remaining cards from right hand onto those in
the left. Then continue thumbing off the rest of the face-up cards,
until you come to backs showing in right hand. Then flop them
face-down and drop the face-down cards from right hand onto them.
(You now have all cards in hand face-down, the 3 normal Aces on top,
nine X-cards below).
You cover the stop-and-go counting with patter. Turn these cards all
face-up.
.
Left little finger can pull-down and you get a break above the 3 Aces
at bottom of packet. (or you can thumb count - whatever).
.
Again, with right hand in straddle grip, pull-off into the left hand
the face-card and undercover the three Aces from the bottom all at
the same time counting "One". To mask the Aces under the top face
card, it should be jogged forward a very slight amount. Now thumb onto
the face another counting "Two", then another, counting "Three"
As you count three... the right hand cards move over all six cards
in the left hand, stealing the three cards just counted - in a
"squaring-up action" and at the same time the left hand moves away
with the three ACES, pivoted backs up, quickly, as hand comes away
and casually drop them onto the Aces of Spades.
.
Faking the same kind of action, merely count off 3 cards and drop onto
each face-up, remaining Ace (actually the Double-faced fakes).
.
Use your favorite vanish of the first three Aces. I like to use the
simple buckle turn-over for the first Ace to go. Then pick-up one
face down card to use as a scoop to pick up pile nr. 2 and simple
Elmsley count showing the Ace gone. Then turning them face-up
dropping onto table.
The third Ace I like to vanish ala original one-armed MacDonald
routine in Vernon book. And as a slow-down and sucker bit I pretend
I am going to vanish the final ACE AS WELL, pick up with card as
scoop like 2nd vanish. You Elmsley count, showing Spade has gone (?).
You say "No, it's not gone, it just turned over" You turn the packet
over showing a back, which is the Spade. Hold them in left hand over
and deal the Spade face-up onto the table....then right hand takes
cards from left (still face-down) and turns them up, displaying them
in a fan, which makes a very nice display and strong finish for the
routine.
.
Note: Derek had a far more complex counting and handling, this has
eliminated some of that and gotten just to the bones of the effect
without overworking.

Hi Pete,
As you may know I am not at all an expert on the rings. But I do
know there are two moves by Harbin which do not seem to be very well
known. These you can find in Harbincadabra on page 66. They are
absolutely incredible!!! If you do not have that book I can send you
a fax of these pages.
I feel your book should include these moves, because they are so
great and should not get lost. So I suggest you get permission of
the publishers of Harbincadabra. May be you already know these moves,
but I felt I should tell you, just in case.
.
Kind regards, Tommy..

Via a local contact in Lausanne we received a short list of cheap
Hotels. Problem is that I don't know if they have space for the
FISM period. Majority of the MAGIC!-NL is based in Hotel Regina,
a cheap hotel in Lausanne. We recently booked the Hotel via the

Re: VITO LUPO

Can't go to bed tonite without putting together my notes on Vito
Lupo's lecture today at the Magic Castle.

The first two rows and part of the third were occupied almost
entirely by MAGIC! members. Prior to the lecture, it was fun to
hear everyone talking about messages they'd read and tips on
uploading and downloading. Confuses the heck out of the, er,
shall I call 'em "lay-magi?" Other MAGIC! members were spread
throughout the room - T A Waters and Max Maven were up in the
back. Of course, going to lectures at the Castle is always
interesting - there were no seats left so one of the attendees,
Johnnathan Pendragon, was sitting on the floor!

Vito did a GREAT lecture. He said that PREPARATION is the key to
doing great magic. Not just making sure the props are in the
right places, but that you are mentally and physically prepared to
start your show. He outlined some breathing exercises, some moves
to relax and stimulate your muscles, and discussed the need for
positive mental imagery.

He said that finger exercises are particularly important to
increase the flow of blood to your hands - "Your hands are your
tools."

He also suggested that you frequently rehearse your act
BLINDFOLDED in order to learn to LOOK AT THE AUDIENCE and NOT your
props. He said that you should "focus on work" when on-stage
(work being providing entertainment for your audience).

Vito is a master at delivering quotable lines in a lecture. Here
are just a few samples:

"The more comfortable the performer is, the more comfortable the
audience is."

"The best way to keep a secret is to put it in a book."

"I do not want to fool my audience as much as I want to entertain
them - I'm not supposed to be a puzzle."

"Chances are, magicians are at their best when little accidents
happen" (This delivered as he picked up a dropped prop from the
floor during the lecture portion).

On "secrets" - "The more you spill, the more you let in."

On assistants - "The days of butlers and slaves are over."

"If I were to be shipwrecked on an island, I'd want to bring a
thumbtip." (This concept could make an interesting MAGIC!
discussion).

And my favorite - "Magic is a far richer craft than pulling a
rabbit out of a hat. Done properly, it is Masterpiece Theater."

Re: VITO LUPO

I agree that Vito did present a fine lecture. The castle crowd is
what is known as a 'tough-room'. You can 'feel' the vibes in the
room, by the response the performer(lecturer) is receiving.

The amount of magic 'experience' in that room Sunday probably
amounted to at least several hundred man-years of magic. They are
hard to impress. It was amazing to hear gasps of appreciaiton
coming from such a group. You expect this kind of reaction from
a 'normal' audience, but certainly not from magi who have 'seen'
it all.

I was particuliarly impressed with his knowledge, and use of his
entire body when doing his manipulation of golf balls. I started
reading his theory book last night and am particuliarly interested
in his dicussion on the use of mime principles in magic.

Another interesting point he made was 'eye-contact' with the
audience. At the end of the lecture he stated, "I have made eye
contact with EVERY ONE in the audience". I don't know about the
rest of you, but I definitely remember the 'moment' when he was
talking JUST to me. I have attended lectures where the lecturer
is telling me one thing verbally and something else by his
performance. Vito is one of the most integrated people I have ever
seen lecture.

Some people may turned off by lectures on magic theory and merely
want to see 'tricks'. I for one am more impressed with a lecture
that gets me thinking about what I'm doing with respect to the
principles being presented.

For those of you that were not able to attend the lecture, I
strongly recommend that you make a special effort to see and
hear Vito any chance you get, he will open your mind to new
ideas and ways of improving your performance.

It definitely was Masterpiece Theater.

.
Here are some of my thoughts on Zombie.
If you have already followed the advice of Pete Biro may be this
will make you take out that flattened ball and hammer it into
shape again.
.
Fist of all, I think Pete's advice is not bad at all. It is probably
better to try and find an effect which has not been done all that
much, so that you have something a bit more special. However I feel
there are a few things to keep in mind before dismissing the zombie
effect.
.
Zombie may seem hackneyed to magicians, but I am not sure if that
holds true also for a lay audience. Zombie is very well known, also
among the lay public, but it is my experience that if you perform it
well you can not only fool the audience with it, even those who know
about the gimmick, but the audience might not even recognize it,
might not realize this is the same as the "ball on stick" they have
seen before! "Hey, this is the real floating ball! The one where it
is not attached to a stick!" It depends on how well you can disprove
the gimmick. Then the zombie effect becomes a floating ball effect,
I mean the damned thing is just floating,...that is a very strong
effect!
The problem with zombie is not that it is performed to death, the
problem I think is that it is very seldom performed to life!
I mean most of the time the ball just does not float! And then the
trick is the worst, just a ball on a stick. But if the audience
really gets the impression the ball is floating, that there are no
attachments to it, it is still a very good trick to perform, and you
can have a lot of succes with it. But it MUST float!
.
To make the ball float is not so much a matter of a lot of practice.
The point is that you must know exactly how you want the ball to
behave. You must know what makes an object float, how do floating
objects behave. This is more a thing of thinking about the effect
than practicing it before youknow what it is that you want to achieve.
Although not overly complicated it is not easy to really understand
how floating objects behave, since there are no floating objects in
real life. You have to think about a non existing thing. You could
think about a floating object like a balloon which floats in the air.
If you would simulate those "balloon" movements with the zombie ball,
I do not think it will be good, it would look like a balloon. People
might get the idea the ball is filled with gas. Although the overall
effect would be better than when they get the impression that they
are watching a ball on a stick, I think it should not sway and dance
like a balloon.
.
You see, floating objects can go from point A to B with a steady
speed and in a straight line, stopping abruptly at point B, then
suddenly going in a different direction, steady speed, straight line
to point C. There is no reason why floating objects could not do
that. The floating impression is definately not created by swaying,
in fact swaying might destroy the illusion of floatation (giving the
impression of a balloon).
The most important thing is to disprove the gimmick. This is not
easy, it requires a lot of thinking. The best advice in print on how
to disprove the gimmick is in the book "Al Schneider on Zombie".
Although there is a lot more to disproving the gimmick, this book
will get your thoughts started in the right direction. Many ideas on
disproving the gimmick there! A very interesting book!
.
Disproving the gimmick will "disconnect" the ball from you, this will
give the idea that the ball floats. But there is another, rather
subtle, but very important way to "disconnect" the ball from you. It
is mainly psychological. It is the acting. You should try to give the
ball a character, a will of its own. For instance. The ball floats in
front of you and floats to the right and to the back. It sort of
floats against your right arm. The ball stops here, hesitates a bit,
goes a little down to see if it can go underneath your arm, there is
not enough room there so the ball decides to go up and starts to go
further to the back over your arm. Then you follow etc...you get the
picture. The ball has its own will, its own goals. And you react to
what the ball does. The ball goes to the right, your hands start
following it, then while your hands still go to the right suddenly
the ball goes to the left. Then when the ball is already going to the
left, your hands stop moving to the right. At this point the ball
continues to move at still the same speed to the left. Now the hands
move to the left also. Your hands change direction while there is
absolutely no break in the speed of the ball going to the left. The
ball becomes a separate entity. It has its own will, its own
character. It might start to play games with you, evading you or
teasing or whatever.
Here the difficult thing is the acting. It is like playing a scene
with a hand puppet, with both you and the puppet acting at the SAME
time. Zombie really is like puppet playing. To act out two
characters at the same time is extremely difficult! Years ago I
wanted to make a routine with a hand puppet, there would be
interaction between me and the hand puppet. I talked about this with
a professional puppet player who told me to forget it. It is one of
the most difficult things in puppet playing. Many have tried but only
a very few can do it because most of the time when the puppet does
something the player stops acting, and when the player gives his
reactions, the puppet stops acting. You need a split mind to be able
to have both characters act continuously. It can be done,
ventriloquists sometimes find that their puppet sometimes does things
they are surprised about themselves! It can be done, but it is very
difficult and will take a lot of time.
.
So, if you do have a split mind and are willing to put in a lot of
thinking about something abstract like a floating object, if you are
willing to do that before putting in undirected practice of something
you may not understand yet, in that case I would say, take that
flattened ball, get it in shape again, put it on the shelf and start
thinking. Eventually you could end up with a very, very strong
effect. Properly done Zombie is great! It really is. But if you feel
you do not want to put in all the effort, please leave it alone.
Zombie done half way is one of the worst things one can imagine.
.
On how to attach the gimmick to the ball, ach...you will find a
practical way in due time. That's a very small problem compared
to the rest.
.
It is a long story on Zombie, I hope you do not feel I sound like a
schoolmaster. But I feel strongly about this trick. In spite of the
fact that it is held in low esteem by a lot of magicians, it still
has a lot of potential. It CAN be a great effect, even when done
with a ball.
.
Unfortunately, Zombie is very easy to do .... badly.
.
Kind regards Tommy Wonder

Re: VITO LUPO

I'll certainly concur with the assessment of Vito Lupo's lecture; he
has some excellent ideas, and covers areas which are not often
discussed in lectures.
However, I can't agree with your comment that the Magic Castle
lecture audience comprises a "tough room," nor your comments on the
degree of experience in that group.
Unquestionably, there are some unusually well informed people among
the Castle membership. Too, the average Castle magician has probably
had access to seeing more performers and lecturers than those from most
other communities. Despite that, I think the standard of knowledge and
experience here is not terribly impressive.
Mind you, the Castle members tend to project the _attitude_ that
they've seen it all before -- but that inevitably breaks down whenever
a lecturer does something they're not familiar with -- which is not an
unfrequent occurance.
There was an amusing moment at Vito's lecture, which was somewhat of
a paradox. He tossed out the comment, "The best way to hide something
is to put it in print." The audience responded with the type of
laughter which clearly indicated that, for most, this was a brand new
observation.
Given that this very comment has been in print countless times
before, the obvious conclusion is that this is an audience largely made
up of people who don't read!

...thus proving the point.

Re: MIKE O'DOWD

I had a chance to learn (it will take years to perfect it
probably, but I may get the hang of it) the most incredible false
shuffle ever. Both Doc Eason and I watched Mike O'Dowd over and
over doing a full deck retention that appeared to completely mix
the deck.

The shuffle is done completely in the hands and appears
to be quite innocent. I have written Mike a letter requesting
permission to publish it here on MAGIC!. Mike is interested in
getting some of his stuff published but his magic is somehow
overlooked by the younger generation due probably to Mike's
shakey hands and his propensity to drop cards; BUT when he hits
it (both the shuffle and the bottom deal) he absolutely KILLS.

Mike learned his skills on the streets of Dublin, Ireland
and freighters plying the trades and knows the real stuff. I
first met Mike at Close-up Encounters in Rochester and we formed
a friendship based on a mutual love of Irish Penny Whistle music
which we both TRY to play. Mike is retired and lives in Canada
now.

Because of my experiences this weekend in Buffalo, I have
decided I've been doing it all wrong and am going back to peg one
and starting over by learning to properly hold the deck in my
left hand and to properly remove them with my right. I appreciate
those who spent hours with me helping me find the proper points
of contact for each finger and thumb.

To be effective with cheating methods one must be able to
spoof a table of hardened card players. I was fortunate to meet
two such gentlemen this weekend, Mike O'Dowd being one of them
and the other knows who he is. Perhaps there were others equally
as able in attendence but out of maybe 30 different second,
middle, and bottom dealers who "helped" me, only these two fooled
me with a combination of skill, knowledge, and innocence. It's
like Geno sez,

"Don't play cards with a guy who calls himself Lefty."

I appreciate all ya'll who want to get together at the
Castle Friday week and if you wanna use my presence as a reason
then so-be-it, I certainly won't complain. As more of us become
involved in the care of MAGIC! the future of this board is
assured.

My goals are simply to stay involved and to do what I can
to effect its' (MAGIC!) growth and viability. Kent Cummins just
called me and is in town for two weeks doing his USAR duty. Kent
telephoned because of our MAGIC! connection. He carried printouts
of the last few hundred msg on the plane coming north and found
my phone number. He'll be on soon and is already a supporter
thanks to David Luther.

Thanks to Burton The Bizarre, we'll soon have an
interactive modem exchange program similar to TAPCIS. This should
be a blessing to many of us in the "boonies" and make interaction
much easier and more cost effective.

Other projects are churning behind the scenes as the
cream rises (sorry, more farm humor). I am finding more and more
that my friends are here on MAGIC!.

                      Thanks for everything.

I agree and really enjoyed Vito's lecture.
HOWEVER....
I thought it was interesting that someone who so strongly claims that
he can feel the slightest breeze wasn't able to feel the light...or,
more specifically, LACK of light for his opening silent routine! The
man opens with a silent routine to music...he doesn't have a cassette
player to play the tape and has to have people frantically hunt one
down for him before the lecture, (thankfully, Jonathan Pendragon was
able to supply one). He makes his entrance...with virtually NO eye
contact with the audience...and goes into a silent routine in the dark!
Whew! Of course, the audience was less than impressed, and that
contributed to Vito's internal jitters. After he got through the rough
opening, he settled in and hit his stride...providing a very fine
lecture indeed. His lecture notes are insightful and important reading
for ANY magician. In fact, Vito would've had a much smoother and more
impressive opening had he attended his own lecture and reread his own
lecture notes...isn't it odd....Vito Lupo's approach would have solved
Vito Lupo's opening problems!!!
This is a paradoxical artform.

I think that segments of the audience can be tough, but, if they like

Dear All: If you read Tommy Wonder's message about the Zombie,
and still throw your Zombie away... you can relate what he says
(and says well, considering English is not his first language)
make sense in many areas of performing.

I know what he means about the Ventriloquists figure saying
something the Ventriloquist had not yet thought of. It happened
to me several times when I was studying the art. I would be
fiddling around with the figure, someone would be visiting and we
(the three of us--Me, Dummy and friend) would be doing gags and
in the heat of the conversation the Dummy would throw ad lib
lines that fit his character and that I didn't seem to have in my
head, being caught by surprise HEARING what the dummy said!

And I only briefly worked with this. I immaging the full-time
Ventriloquists have this happen REGULARLY.

Lots of good stuff online of late. Am putting the remnants of my
old lectures together to take to Indianapolis with me. The club
back there has asked me to lecture on or about May 20-21. Will
also be spending some time visiting 'ILLUSIONS' and learning the
stuff out of Mike Close's book 'WORKERS' -- which I have seen him
do, but being a slow learner need all the help I can get.

My biggest complaint about the Vito Lupo Lecture... I had the
date wrong and he lectured up here in N. Calif. and I sat home

Re: GAFFED SILVER

Dear Tabbo "King of Koins"

One reason for the lack of "old" gaff coins is that until
fairly recently (I would guess the late fifties) it was again' the
LAW to deface money in any way! Then they decided it was only
against said law if the money was modified in an attempt to make it
appear to be greater than its actual value. Another reason might be
the value of silver coins and the great "meld down" of such coins
when the price of silver went up! Gaff coin sets used to be sold
"under the counter" in magic shops. Most of the older sets were made
by Connie Haden and by a fellow in Philadelphia named Satan.
They do exist! I have some gaff stuff in walking liberty
halves and morgan head dollars and in more recent silver coins. The
C/S set that I was talking to El Peto about uses a walking liberty,
and an American big penny. I have also seen quarter stacks with the
tail coin on top as well as Boston Boxes.

You know...its strange...but I never thought of the Easter Bunny as

Actually, I think that magicians find the gaffs and gimmicks in
places like what used to be called "dime" stores and then invent
tricks in which to use the gaffs and gimmicks. As to "easy" magic,
or simple, direct magic in which the effect is more important than
the method, the distinction may not be American and European but
rather for whom the magician performs. In other words, those who
perform mainly for magicians utilize sleighs and those who perform
commercially use gaffs, gimmicks, or whatever is surest and safest to
gain the effect. Sometimes, I wonder if we have more magician's
magicians in this country. Generalizing is such fun!

I agree with your analysis of the laugh, Wayne. I also felt that some
in the audience laughed because of his perfect delivery of the line.

As to the calibre of the attendees, to paraphrase another line, "The
magical skill, talent and ability in the audience exceeded even that
present on those occasions when Phil Goldstein dines alone."

Re: SO MANY BOOKS...

You pose an interesting question regarding the apparent increase
in the number of magic books being published. While, I am not sure
if the impact on my wallet is due from the increased numbers of books
or the increased cost (most of them seem to be at least $39.95), it
does appear that a greater number of hardback magic books are being
published. If we assume this is true, I would suspect a combination
of factors are responsible. Pete Biro and Richard Hart have advanced
the "more monkeys" theory and you added the possible impact of
Henning's THE MAGIC SHOW in the early seventies. I believe all of
you are correct. This theory is supported by I.B.M. membership
figures.
                year membership

                1970 6122

                1973 7017
                1974 7834
                1975 8689
                1976 9704

Current I.B.M. membership is over 13,000 members. If I.B.M.
membership numbers are an indication of the numbers of magicians in
general, then we could say that the number of magicians has more than
Doubled in the last twenty years! Insofar as marketing of the books
is concerned, a relatively inexpensive ad in the Linking Ring would
reach twice as many customers. I know that runs of 2000 books were
common ten years ago. I was told the first 1000 sold fairly quickly
and the last 1000 take a few years to sell. I do not have current
market information, but I would suspect the runs are higher and the
sales faster.
I.B.M. membership analysis also reveals a membership that is growing
older with a median age in the mid thirties. The video game rage of
the late seventies and early eighties took a heavy toll on youth
memberships in most organizations. Magic was no exception. I.B.M.
junior membership peaked at 769 in 1977 and had dropped to 442 by
1980. I don't have current figure in front of me, but I recall the
total dipped below 300 at one point. The future impact on magic of
this decease is another question altogether. However, the existence
of an older buying population of magicians probably means more
available expendable income for the purchase of greater numbers of
more expensive books.
Another factor might be more magicians with better educations and
therefore more ability to write the books. I would agreed that desk
top publishing and other technical advances have contributed to the
physical quality and appearance of books at "affordable" prices. I
am not sure that I would agree that the material contained in today's
book is any better than the books of one, two or three decades ago.
The Vernon, Slydini, Bobo and other tomes set a pretty high standard
and probably provided much of the inspiration for the writers of
today's books. I'm sure that are other factors as well.

How big can the posters and stuff we stick on the bulletin board be?
The "publicity" should be for the public session more than the
get-together. The best flyer ever put together about MAGIC! was the
one Pete did for DM. If you don't have a copy, gimme' your fax number
and I'll send it to you - or, if you prefer, will upload it here as a

Really would appreciate your putting them together on your end, will

Re: MAGIC! PR

                           WHAT IS MAGIC!(tm)?

    MAGIC! has been described as a "24-hour a day, 365-day a year
magic convention." It has been called "the CNN of magic," "an
always open horseshoe bar for magicians," and "the interactive
magic magazine of the 90's." It has also been described as "an
    electronic community of magicians."

Here's how it works. Someone writes an article, a review or
devises a new trick. It goes "online" (which is the same as a
magazine printing it) and instead of waiting three months for
printing and mailing... You read it INSTANTLY. Now here is the
big difference... You can write an immediate reply. You can add
your Two Cents worth. You can complain. You can add variations.
You can ask the author a question and get an immediate reply!

                            WHO IS ON MAGIC!?

There are currently about 600 magicians, from Japan to Europe, on
MAGIC! Among the most active members are Michael Ammar, Pete
Biro, Jeff Busby, Tabby Crabb, Mac King, Max Maven, Gary Ouellet,
Gary Plants and T A Waters.

An associate system in the Netherlands, MAGIC-NL, has developed
from MAGIC! Messages and files are shared between MAGIC! and
MAGIC-NL and European magicians such as Tommy Wonder and Dick
Koornwinder are also able to join in the global magic
    conversations.

                            HOW TO JOIN MAGIC!

To join MAGIC!, use your computer's communications package to dial
U.S. (818) 896-7450. Once you are connected, just follow the
on-screen instructions to register. Access to MAGIC! is FREE,
except for any long-distance or telephone charges, identical to
those you would be charged for any regular telephone call.

When you reach the Main Menu, perform these five additional easy
steps to enroll in the private MAGIC! section:

o Type C to select Comments and press the ENTER key.

o Type Y for Yes and press the ENTER key.

o Enter a comment indicating that you want to join the
private MAGIC! section. Include a brief resume of your
magical qualifications and your name, address and tele-
           phone number.

o At the end of your comment, press the ENTER key TWICE.

o Type S for Save and press the ENTER key.

Within a couple of days, upon approval, you will be registered to
the private MAGIC! section. See you there!

MAGIC! is hosted by ECANET(tm). If you need assistance, you can
call David Lichtman at U.S. (818) 899-8812 during normal Pacific
Time business hours or write to David Lichtman, P. O. Box 900,
    Arleta, California 91334.

Re: MAGIC! AT IBM

As a part of MAGIC!'s IBM Convention coverage, we are planning to once
again provide digital images. As I'm flying to this one, and have a
ton of stuff to carry, it would be great if someone, perhaps local,
could let us use a computer for the duration of the convention.

What we would need would be an IBM or close-compatible "clone" with an
available card slot for the digitizer board. We'd also need it to have
a modem. A portable that will accept a standard card would work.

If anyone can make something available, I'd appreciate knowing. Please

Re: GAFFED SILVER

I never thought about the illegal angle on the early
gaffed silver stuff. That never stops magicians anyway as is
evidenced by the work of Haden and others. I want to find both
the Okito box and the Boston box in the size to fit the older
stuff. I got a small mahogany half dollar safe the other day
supposedly made by Haden, but wasn't aware he did any wood.
Probably a spoof.

As far as BBQ is concerned, right here at The Hotel
DeCarlo we have GloTab BBQ which is equal to the best of the
South Georgia BBQ - Macon and points South. Gloria promised to do
some up if it looks good for you, Pete, and Dave to come down.
She may still be in LA for the Nationals but is gonna put some
Brunswick Stew up about a week early. It gets better if you let
it sit in the sun for 4 or 5 daze anyhou.

Have never seen any gaffed Liberty dollars and would love
to look at some sometime. The older American stuff is so
beautiful, especially the Liberty half. I have some Barber coins
but no gaffs, but sure some must of been made though have never
seen any. The Barber coins seem to be thinner than Liberty, but
maybe they rubbed in someone's pocket for a decade, don't know.

I have some uncirculated Confederate cash and a dogeared
Virginia bill from the beginnings of the succession. Been trying
to do a trick with them, but the gas station won't take it.

My main interest in most of this stuff is in examining
and appreciating the fine and difficult workmanship that each of
these coins exhibits. The craft of the precision machinist is one
to be envied, appreciated, and admired. Wish I could get hooked
up with a good model making machine operator and have even
thought about getting a small metal machine myself, but I do love
working with wood.

Saw some beautiful antique scissor type card holdouts
this weekend. The work was great and this particular model was
quite compact. There was also a grinder there who was selling
shiners made from silver dimes and quarters. They were very nice.
Buffed to perfection with a convex face. I picked up a quarter
and the dope on how they were made. All handwork and a bargain at
$20 considering the time and care put into the final polish.

Re: MAGIC-21

The twenty-first set of MAGIC! messages - #68 (April 14, 1991) to
#499 (April 20, 1991) - has been transfered to a downloadable
file. The file is named MAGIC-21.TXT. This means that you can
now go to the file area, download this file, and read the twenty-
first volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to
use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-21.ZIP
and is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

Between the creation of MAGIC-20 and MAGIC-21 the messages were
renumbered. The new message #68 is the "old message number"
100001 (Message #10000 was a private message and does not appear
in the file).

This volume includes a continuation of the discussion of the
David Copperfield Special (XIII). This discussion, which began
on April 9th (see MAGIC-20.TXT) runs over 168 messages and is,
to date, the largest discussion of a single topic on MAGIC!
In message #77, Gary Plants identifies the "swimmers wax" Juan
Tamariz talked about at Desert Magic for members in the U.S.
and in #116 Tommy Wonder does the same for those in Europe.
In message #85, Charlie Randall reports on the Magic Collectors'
Weekend in Chicago. In #117, Tommy Wonder expresses his views on
the audience's belief in magic, and in #125 Tabby Crabb replies.
Richard Hatch's Parlour show at the Magic Castle is reviewed in
message #223. David Lichtman, in message #285, passes on some hints
for producing custom jumbo cards using a computer, a laser printer,
and steel wool. Pete Biro discusses forcing techniques in msg. #292.
Message #313 is a MAGIC! "Feature Article" on Bicycle Secrets Revealed,
a report on "inside info" from U.S. Playing Cards. Drew Sernekos
provides some interesting philosophy in #356,

In this file, MAGIC! welcomes Michael Ammar, celebrates Evan Katz's
engagement to be married, and mourns the death of Rose Munari, mother
of Geno Munari. There is also magic gossip and chit-chat.

Not only will transfering these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

That's a lot of good advice on properly performing the Zombie routine.
You are right that it is easy to learn to do and do it badly. It will
take a lot of self control for a magician learning how to do this
effect, not to show it until he has had LOTS of practice. Having it
move in an unpredictable way as if it had a mind of its own is great
advice so to the audience it doesn't look like you are conrolling it.

Re: CHUCK FAYNE'S 4 ACES

Last week I saw Chuck Fayne stun his audience with his closing trick.
The story revolved around a gambler named one armed Joe McDonald and
how he used to do this with one hand. He took out the four aces from
the deck and had a spectator deal 12 cards face down onto the table.
He place three face down cards in front of each of the four aces.
The packets were picked up one at a time, three face down cards and one
face up ace. All of the cards were then shown to be face down and when
turned over there were four indifferent cards. This was repeated three
times and finally the last pile was shown to have the four aces. Only
sixteen cards were used in this effect.
I thought it was a great effect and after thinking about it for awhile
I have come up with an easy way to perform this stunning effect.
What I don't know is whether or not this is a widely known effect or if
it is marketed or if it is of Chuck's own creation. I wasn't able to
speak with him but I wonder if any of our Magic! members might know.
If it is not an infringement on someones rights or territory I would
like to share my handling with our members.
T. A., Max, Pete, et. al. - any guidance here?

Re: MIKE O'DOWD

Yes, I agree on Mike's shuffle. I would normally keep
this tight but Mike was bemoaning the fact that none of this
work had ever been published before. Precursor has been holding
stuff for years with no promise of publication so I thought I'd
give Mike a venue. He kept saying something about "Max Maven"
while we were going over his stuff so I knew you must be familiar
with him and his work.
Mike is a grand old man of whom I'm quite fond and would
do anything to help him see his work in print. Maybe we should do
a book or something. He's also got great sleeving techniques and
he stacks dice well with a unique wrist movement; though at the
time the dice were flying around the room.
He's got a lot of stamina and has always followed through
as far as I'm concerned still doing a lot of traveling even to
Ireland this summer.
By the way, I'd never tip his work without his permission
first with complete understanding, etc. The work on the shuffle
is amazing and Mike must be as relaxed a card player as I've ever
seen when he's in control. It'll take me a while to get the hang
of it (if ever). The way he slops those cards around while
maintaining a stack is total poetry in motion and made my trip.
He'd been working for hours trying to get it so he could
show it to us (Doc Eason and tabman) and when he did it in slow
motion Doc and I just busted out laughing. Amazing.

Re: YOUR OPINION PLEASE.

My opinion, humble as it may be is that escapology is magic. It is
magic of a very narrow spectrum, but is nevertheless magic. After all
the effect of an escape is a penetration of solid through solid.
According to Fitzkee that is one of the basic magical effects. I think
though that presentation has a lot to do with whether or not escapes
are magic. Most who perform a straight jacket escape do so as a show
of personal skill not as a magical effect. Other escapes are presented
as a magical effect, i.e. The Milk Can Escape, The Water Torture Cell,
etc. Certainly Metamorphosis more commonly known as the sub trunk would
be considered magical.

David that was me who mentioned the eraser shaped like a playing card.
It was poker sized and printed in color on one side only-the other side

GENO MUNARI or one of our other friends could attempt to find them and

There was a message posted here stating that the tape player being
hunted down was for the purpose of RECORDING the lecture.
hmm...
The audio setup Vito used certainly was a "feeble" one, to put it
kindly. If that was his own, he should invest in a better unit.
If the tape player used was the borrowed one, (from Jonathan), as was
my understanding...then we should all learn from this example the
importance of backups and how inherently dangerous it is to rely on
others for essential elements of your performance.
In fairness to Vito, I hope my candid discussion of these issues does
not give anyone the mistaken impression that I didn't think Vito's
lecture was a worthwhile one...on the contrary, I think I've stated
previously that I thoroughly enjoyed the content and execution of the
vast majority of it. I purchased his lecture notes and they are a very
welcome addition to my library...I read them over dinner the same

Re: YOUR OPINION PLEASE.

I agree. Escapes are set-up to appear to be impossible. The
performer is challenging/fooling the spectator in much the same manner
as a more traditional performer. The solid through solid metaphor is
very apt.

Houdini is arguably the most successful magician this country has ever
seen, and he was an escape artist. Escapology allows a "macho"
presentation of magical events. Mentalism allows a "ESP" presentation
of magical events. Both are ways that performers can shed the dreaded
top hat and coat image the public seems to like to poke fun at. To say
escapology is not a branch of magic does not make sense when one
includes mentalism as a branch.

Isn't it interesting that there hasn't been an escapologist around for
a while? (at least someone who really took off). Is it time?

So far as I understand the situation, the tiny Walkman-cum-speakers was
what was loaned by Jonathan Pendragon. Again, I believe the situation
was not Vito's fault. By all means, there is value in having back-ups
for your required needs, but obviously Vito was not lugging a boombox
around on this tour, on the assumption that his requested player would
be provided at each venue.
   Your critical comments about his opening silent routine are valid;
I think he was not really comfortable at that point, probably in part
because the tape player thing threw him off stride.

Re: HELP

THERE IS NOTHING NEW!!

You will not believe... I went over to Byron Walker's to do some
research, (he has one of the great libraries of the world) to try
to find the FIRST routine for the linking rings, IN PRINT....
which we found in an 1860 Ed. of The Boys own Conjuring Book,
Anon.

Byron figures it had to come from some other book first as the
Boys Own was mostly stolen material.... but we couldn't find any
earlier source. There are more places to look in his library!!!!

Then we find "How to put a Ring through one Cheek and onto
stick!" USING A KEY RING. THERE IS NOTHING NEW. So we find it in
The Whole Art of Legerdemain, or Hocus Pocus in Perfection, H.
Dean, 1722.

GUESS WHAT... WE THEN GRABBED THE OLDEST BOOK I KNEW OF -- HOCUS
POCUS JR., The Anatomy of Legerdemain: OR, The Art of Jugling,
1634, and the Ring thru Cheek AND onto stick, with key ring is
there!!!

Byron said, wait, let's check Scot's Discovery of Witchcraft, I
have the 1st Edition, 1584. IT WAS IN THERE!!!!!!!!! A key ring,
but not linking, altho it goes onto the stick.... hmmmm

Man I am having a ball looking up this stuff. We will get to the
real source!

My question is... Does anyone here on MAGIC! know of an earlier
source than 1860 describing the Linking Rings?

I love the first paragraph, it say: "Get a blacksmith to make a
number of rings, about six or seven inches in diameter...." (It
shows a drawing of the standard set of 8 rings).

Like I say, there is nothing new! Later... folks.

I agree, it doesn't make sense to say escapes aren't a branch of magic
if you say mentalism is -- but I think that neither are. Magic is the
presentation of the impossible -- but escapology is usually presented
as the demonstration of a SKILL even if we don't know the particulars
of a specific escape. Mentalism is also the presentation of a skill
because -- regardless of what magicians may think -- most laypeople
believe that what a mentalist does is in fact possible in the real
world. Neither mentalism nor escapology fit the basic definition of
magic.

Re: YOUR OPINION PLEASE.

TA- When you say that mentalism isn't really a branch of magic because
most people think it is done in the real world or that it is just some
kind of trick, I'd like to offer a couple of observations.
When I have seen a performer include an ESP or other mental effect in
a performance that included pulling a rabbit out of a hat or other
standard effects, the audience seemed to perceive it as just another
trick. When I have seen an unfortunately lousy mentalist at work the
act was perceived as just a lousy performance and they didn't care to
even puzzle over how he did it.
BUT- on rare occassions when I have seen an excellent mentalist perform
and who really put it over as if it took great feats of concentration,
etc. with all the dressing, THEN people could be heard talking after
the show about how he or she really was reading someones mind and
although skeptics in the group might not believe it they were not
disagreeing either.
I don't think a magician has much chance of convincing any rational
adult that he really produced a rabbit out of an empty hat as if it
were some sort of spontaneous creation. However, there is enough
evidence that maybe, just maybe sometimes some people can read some
minds. We have all had an experience of knowing what someone was about
to say or who was going to call etc. And some folks will remember that
as a vivid moment conveniently forgetting the thousands of times they
were wrong in their "premonitions". But nobody has ever spontaneously
created a rabbit out of a hat!
So I think that you may be able to bewilder people with a good card and
coin routine but you just might convince some people that you have
managed to focus your mental powers just enough to read a mind or
discern one ESP card from another.
One last thought. I remember reading an article about Anneman and how
he would be swaying and perspiring from the apparent effort of his
mentalist feats. The audience believed it was because of the
tremendous concentration he was exerting. They didn't know it was
actually his tremendous stagefright that made him almost pass out!
That wasn't my last thought, here's my last thought. I bet hundreds
and hundreds of years ago when magicians would make something appear or
vanish that people believed them to have extra powers. Nowadays people
are too sophisticated and educated to believe that. However I bet many
of those same people would be inclined to believe a good mentalist
really did have "Extra Powers" and therefore would be more akin to the
magicians of a long, long time ago. I think mentalism is a form of
magic and a great mentalist would truly be a great magician because he
or she could really fool an audience into believing!

Interesting. Maybe we live in a world where escapes just aren't that
intersting? The public is too cynical, not easily impressed...? I
don't know. I suspect that there's always room for escapology, and
that using old Houdini tricks is BOUND to get you the response Steve
Baker got. What would be interesting (and I'm sure SOMEONE is doing
it), would be to approach the problem with TODAY'S audience in mind.
Craft a REALLY impossible-looking escape that no one has done before.
Find a marketing hook (Houdini was great at thison the order of "Al

A good Elmsley isn't really hard to do. You just have to practice it
until it is smooth. Rythym is a big part of it. The moves all have to
take the same amount of time. If you have a metronome handy, use it.

Re: MESSAGES

I suggest that you try answering. It's quite easy.
Did you make any of the other shows, or just the close-up room?
Probably will see you Fri at the
Castle. Haven't learned how to back-up a line.

Re: FLYER WUZ ERDNASE

Hold the phones! Stop the copiers! I GOT the Erdnase flyer in the
mail a few moments ago. Seems that the mule that hauls the stuff to
the Arleta postoffice had the flu for a couple of days. Thanks to
everyone who was getting me one.

Re: ERDNASE

Did Busby come out with a new flyer of stuff (Thaumaturgist) or just
the flyer on the book?

It was just an advertisement for the book, Evan. I'm still waiting for
the next Thaumaturgist.
