Tabby...thank you for trying. Your package arrived but the desired
results have been frustratingly elusive.
My dwindling patience has brought me to the point of a very simple
solution...(why didn't I think of this before?)...basic structural
alteration!
Anyone in the market for a pile of Rings'N'Things overly magnetic metal
filings?

Re: WHAT'S WRONG NOW?

Whether not getting to see your reply is "normal" or not depends on
your communications software. I know that in QModem 3 it was normal
not to see your upload appear on the MAGIC! screen although you did see
it during the upload process. Disconcerting until you got used to it.
That doesn't happen in the newest version of QModem (4.2f). If it
works, don't fix it!

Only one balloon. OK. Thanks. Think I have something around here
that would do that. But wouldn't work when you have to inflate 50 to
100 balloons at a kid's party.

I also have a can of hydrogen - a souvenier of the Hindenburg disaster

Wow!, Arnaud! I'm impressed with your new interface program. It
sounds great! Would your version work for me in reverse? So that I
could log on to MAGIC-NL, download the messages and properly add them
to the MAGIC! message base?

Glad to see that you finally found a connection thru BT-Tymenet. I'd
been trying to deal with Telenet and had suggested that to you (I
believe I'd even mentioned Tymenet once upon a time), but I will also
call Tymenet and see what they are offering. Could come very in handy
during FISM, when we will be looking to MAGIC-NL for the latest
on-the-scene news.

Again, congrats on the new tools!

Re: MORE

My comment meant nothing of the kind.

First of all, I'll ignore your "pursuit of a dollar" remark, as so far
as I understood this discussion it had to do with art, not commerce.
Now, as far as morality is concerned, I (as most people) indeed have
standards which I adhere to. This has to do with being a human being,
not an artist. It makes perfect sense for an artist to hold to the same
moral code in his/her art that he or she holds in general. It does not,
to me, make sense to alter that code because someone might decide to
choose you as a role model.

Re: DELETION

This is in response to your private message to me, concerning the trick
of mine which was tossed onto this board. The issue has nothing to do
with the fact that I was the one who invented it; it would be equally
wrong no matter whose work it was.

No, I do not feel I was overly harsh. I think it's wonderful for people
to trade ideas and information, but not to cavalierly place an idea
into a public forum when you don't know where it comes from, and thus
don't know the propriety involved.

There are tricks and ideas which have passed into the "public domain,"
and there are those that have not. Surely, there is a gray area
somewhere in the middle, but "Kirigami" is not within it.

I appreciate your offer to delete the description, but as I noted in my
prior comment the trick as described is incorrect, so I suppose it may
as well stay on-line.

The bottom line is that the trick _has_ been published, and as such it
is something that some people have paid for the right to perform.

I was totally baffled by your message #4510 to Maven. If it was
intended humorously, it wasn't phrased in a way that made that clear --
and if you intended it seriously, I am not sure I understand what
you're saying at all. I trust you are NOT saying there is "moral" and
"immoral" art, or that art should be pedagogical in nature or purpose;
that's the kind of thing that inspires (if that's the word) the sort of
thing the Chinese currently do -- plays about tractors...

I agree that it would be equally wrong regardless of who's work it was.
And I think that you know that the policy here is to NOT allow the work
of others to be published without their consent. I just felt that in
reading Scott's message it was possible that his kindly Uncle had
taught the effect to him and that he was unaware that it was not a
family heirloom. When we can catch such occurrances, we need to make
sure that they are corrected - but I don't think Scott appeared to
deserve the heavy swat you gave him.

Do you really think P&T do what THEY want regardless of what others
think? I believe they are doing WHAT WORKS as a vehicle for their
performances. They have truly taken their own path, which is incred-
ibly rare in the magic world. Or the music world too, look how many
groups all look the same. Same hair, wardrobe, basic sound... the
real talents, like Phil Collins is DIFFERENT because he is plain
looking. But his music stands above the props, smoke and wildness
shown by so many others. As an observation (not a criticism) look at
Franz Harary -- doing "rock magic"a he looks like the average rock
music performer... yet Collins is a true star and nobody in magic has
tried to look like him. Weird analogy, but something I have noticed.

I certainly can't speak on behalf of the Tabman (except when he gives

whittlin' knife and rubbing compound, he silently steals over to his
glowing monitor and revs up the electronic communications version of a
chain saw. The man has no mercy for the moguls of the phone system.

Magical Publications uses Omnipage software with their scanner. I
remember Mike saying some "expert" (is that what you're studying?) said
Omnipage was really an excellent program - possibly the best. He's had
very good luck with it. It is true, though, unless you have a very
clear copy, you spend a lot of time cleaning up what you've scanned.

Re: MORE

I'm glad I waited, Max. Wearily I collapsed in bed last night.
But I restlessly tossed and turned. About two hours before dawn,
an erie golden glow, totally unlike that of an amber monitor, took
form within my room. Thalia appeared before me. Dressed in a
shimmering, diaphanous gown, she slipped silently into my bed and
took me in her arms. I'll spare you the details of our tryst,
Max, but afterward, when we lay smoking (yes, it is true one
smokes after sex with a Goddess) I said, "But I thought you were a
virgin."

"Yeah," she said, "they all think that. But I lost my virginity a
long time ago to Commerce. It was the night of our Senior Prom.
All of us, me, all my sisters, Aesculapius, and what's her name,
the gal from law. We had a ball! Besides, whatever gave you the
notion that we were pure? Dad ran a baudy house, you know."

"I'll bet," I said, "2400 baud at least."

There are additional details of our further couplings, but they
are not germane here. At dawn, she gently left my bed. She
walked toward the far wall and turned back toward me just before
it. She raised her arms and was surrounded by a golden glow. The
glow expanded as her sisters Clio, Euterpe, Melpomene,
Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Urania and Calliope joined her.
Placing their arms about each other's waists, they frisked about,
Rockette style, as they sang Madonna's "Material Girl," followed
by "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." As the last notes died off, the
glow, and the Godesses, faded.

Afterwards I realized that "Art" had left a long time ago - gone,
along with academe, professional ehics, high button shoes and "Il
faut souffrir pour etre belle." I know how it feels to discover
that Father Chanukah is a myth, Max. I trust that you will get
over it.

and even sold a book and about a dozen magazines. AND I got away

Being able to beep over to your other line and call out is a feature of

I had one made a long time ago. It is just simply to ask for a large
pocket to be put into the lining of the coat. Just call a couple of
tailor shops. The one I used (may be gone now) Was right off the 405
Freeway a half block west on Artesia Blvd. (I know it isn't Hollywood
but I am sure you can find one). You might try the oriental area in
and around Olympic, those tailors will do wonders.
One trick you might want to do is use a hook and eye instead of a pin
to hold the open top to your body. There is also a method using a
heavy piece of wire in the top edge. Gravity moves it where you want.
Good luck.

Please tell Joe that it is possible that there is a "glitch" in message

Arrrrggghhhh... I read it bass ackwards and didn't see LEG TUG. Heh.
Well, I stand by my story. Actually Karrell Fox, in one of his books
has a very simple method. He has a plastic tube going from the
balloon up your sleeve and down the other side. You blow into the
tube (secretly) trying to blow up a balloon in your right hand, and
the balloon in your left hand inflates. It is only good as an MC or
opening bit, as you have to be "set" ahead of time. But it is easy.

Would you agree, Max, that "Kirigami" is "performable" by those who own
"Mind Games"? Just wondering, because there is no formal explanation
of the effect. I was just curious if you feel that the trick can only
be performed by those who have the manuscript, even if the method can
be doped out from the tape. BTW, where is it published?

it is a terrific tape full of very useful information I feel fortunate
that I am able to have material such as you have produced early on in
my magic learning. I am able to use ideas such as you have put forth
to make huge leaps and bounds away from mediocrity and towards perform-
ing magic that people will sit up, take notice, and remember as
something really special. I wish I had been able to come up with
something about it that you might find useful to improve upon in that
tape but as far as I'm concerned it is just great the way it is!

The file problem is confirmed as SERIOUS at this time. Let me explain:

There is NO PROBLEM with downloading any file IF YOU CAN ACCESS IT.
What we are loosing are NOT the files, merely the path to them. It is
intermittent and is appearing on the external test machine as well as
on MAGIC!

There is also NO PROBLEM with uploading files IF YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DO
SO by the system.

The condition is temporary and has the highest priority for fixes right

I didn't know Morrissey ever made NICE stuff. (OK, you said no smart
ass comments about Magnets... not quality...) Seriously! AS I recall
Morrissey's stuff was "light" in weight and frankly that is a bad
feature for working cups and balls. The WEIGHT has a lot to do with
being able to handle them. The Charlie Miller "mans" cup (made by
Magic Inc., Chicago 312-EDI BULL) was super heavy copper. The best
all around cups are the Paul Fox, great size, look, balance.

Re: DISAPPOINTED?

One of your recent messages almost looked like programming in LISP.
LISP was one of the early artificial intelligence programming
languages. One of the things you had to do with it was use a LOT of
nested parenthesis. The system would count the left and right parans
to make sure that all of the nests were closed. Some of us found out
that it was OK to have a SURPLUS of right parans so we would end a LISP
program with a bunch of 'em. Needles to say, one could get some
interesting and amusing results.

uttered as Pierre de Fermat's dying word. The complete phrase was "Ah,

a rice bowl. I think the drawing ws in the MAGIC OF HOYAM. Dr. Albo

effect was? Spurting rice bowl. A fountain of water spurted skyward
out of the bowl. You stole the load off the back of the table.

you, ASC what you can do for your country!" Actually, ASC is to
computers whas ASA is to film, and ASCII is similar to the ASA speed.
There is a new expanded ASCII being developed that will be more like
ISO. Does that help?

Re: WAYNE'S LIST

Because of the problem with the download file area, I've decided to
post Wayne's list of items as a message. Please note his previous
message, in which he indicates that some itmes are already gone.

                     MAGIC LIST: JUNE 1991

Here's a list of magic items for sale. These are all NEW and
complete...none are used. I only have one or two of each, so be
sure to phone me to reserve any item you may want. (818) 994-7774

CRYSTAL FANTASY - Mage begins by displaying a crystal clear goblet
which he polishes inside & out with a silk. He takes out a packet
of cigarettes, removes one and, using the packet itself, seals the
mouth of the goblet by covering it. The silk is now draped over
the goblet. Stepping a few feet to the side, the mage lights the
cigarette and blows smoke in the direction of the sealed goblet.
After a few magical passes, the silk is removed and the interior of
the goblet is seen to be filled with a DENSE SMOKE! The goblet is
now tilted, allowing the slowly ebb from the glass. A great effect
done silently to music or with patter. No harsh chemicals, acids,
etc. Ready to perform at a moments notice. Entirely self-
contained and complete with gimmick, silk, glass, easy
instructions, PLUS A ROUTINE FOR THE NONSMOKER! Highly
recommended. Retail Price: $139. MAGIC! PRICE: $110.

MASSEY'S AMAZRING - A small box is shown and lid & bottom are
removed. There are two holes in opposite sides of the box through
which a ribbon or cord is threaded. Bottom is replaced and a
BORROWED ring is placed within the box and lid is put back on.
Spectator holds both ends of the cord and, upon removing top and
bottom, ring is found to be threaded on the cord! BOX AND CORD ARE
LEFT IN THE SPECTATOR'S HANDS! **REMEMBER THIS:** Box is freely
shown and handled, both ends of the cord are visible, ribbon is
threaded BEFORE ring is placed within the box. Spectator may
remove ring and exmine box after effect! Nicely made stained wood.
Retail Price: $32. MAGIC! PRICE: $25.

THE ALCHEMIST'S DREAM - Mage brings forth a small brass vial, a
magic potion and some metal filings. the filings are placed within
the brass vial, a drop of potion added and a cork seals the vial.
A slight shake, a magical word...the vial is emptied to reveal the
metal filings have changed to GOLD filings! These are returned to
the vial, more potion added, shaken, an incantiation...now a GOLDEN
NUGGET is produced from the vial! Vial may be examined as there is
nothing for them to find. Set includes all necessary filings,
golden nuggets, brass vial, handmade enameled box, complete
instructions plus suggestions for other effects using your
Alchemist's Dream vial! Retail Price: $40. MAGIC! PRICE: $32.

ULTIMA DECK VANISH PLUS! - A small walnut box containing a deck of
cards is displayed. The deck is removed & shuffled. Spectator
selects a card from the 52, memorizes it and returns it to the
deck, WHICH THE SPECTATOR SHUFFLES! He places entire deck deck in
card box and hands to Mage. Card box & deck are now covered with
an 18" silk, (supply your own), and held well above the table top.
All cards are again shown at this point. Mage states that he will
shake the box and ONLY the selected card will come out through a
slit in the end of the card box. Card box is again covered and
shaken. Suddenly, one card falls to the table, face down. Covered
box is set in front of spectator who is asked, for the first time,
to name his card. Tabled card is turned over and it proves to be
the selected card! "How was it done?" asks the spectator.
"Easy!..." Spectator is asked to uncover box & finds that THE
ENTIRE DECK HAS VANISHED! "...When it was the only card in the box
to begin with," claims the mage with a wink. Really astonishing
routine! Box may be examined. Supplied with detailed instructions
and easy-to-follow photographs. Complete with a deck of cards.
Retail Price: $22.50 MAGIC! PRICE: $17.50

PEERLESS RISING CARDS - This works on the classic "weight" system.
Completely mechanical and self-contained. EFFECT: Cards are
casually mixed and magician has three spectators freely select one
card each. Cards are returned to the pack and, after a magical
pass, one of the cards begins to rise out of the pack! Yes, it's
one of the selected cards. Second card rises while deck is held
within a clear drinking glass! Mage begins to put the deck away in
its Bicycle card case and is reminded of the third card...it then
rises from the card case which can be held by the spectator! No
strings to pull. No motors, wires, etc. Mage has complete
control. All hand-made quality throughout and ready to perform at
a moments notice! Retail Price: $22.50 MAGIC! PRICE: $17.50

REMEMBER: I only have one or two of each of these, so phone to
reserve whichever item(s) you may want. A little extra to cover
postage would be appreciated. Thanks.

'Wayne.

Re: MORE

Problem is, if you set up some sort of criterion for what makes "art"
then what do you do when something new comes along. I don't think tha
art is classifiable. Art first must exist in the soul of the artist
before it manifests in some form. The "snuff flicks" question is a
loaded one. If the film was really produced as an artistic statement
then art it is, if however it is called art just to get past a law or
a censor then it is bullsh--. Now, that is a subject that a farm boy
knows something about. I am afraid of censorship and bookburning. I
am pretty straight and old fashioned in my views mostly, but I used
to be an artist and I know how it feels. If we have to have question
able stuff exist in order to insure that the "good stuff" has a
chance to survive, then sobeit.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I thought. I had a big argument

Thanks for telling me about the 2-3/4 year old. It was "touch and go"
over his attending, but I had pretty much decided not. Would have
hated to get there and then find out. Happened at CES one time. The
year before, we'd seen infants (which he was then) there. His first
year they declared him a "fire hazard."
Glad to hear you got together with Mike King and Vicky Jo, but they got

Re: VOLUME

Ask Finn Jon or Michael Ammar.

Actually, on MAGIC!, a "thread" is a series of messages connected by
what should be some common topic. When you are live on MAGIC!, using
the "B" at the message sub-menu allows you to go back along the
thread to see the previous messages. Using "F" at the message sub-menu
allows you to go forward along the thread to see someone else's (or
theoretically, your own) additions before you reply. Pressing the
ENTER key will return you to your starting place when using "B" or "F."
IMP! has the same feature, using the left cursor control key to go back
and the right cursor control key to more forward.

Re: JUGGLING & MAGIC

As it happens, the Eason tape is a special case. It is indeed a
performance tape, originally made to sell to customers at his bar. When
he explored selling it to dealers, he was told that it would sell more
copies if there were instructions for the routines. Thus, he wrote up
a booklet which now comes with the tape when purchased by magicians,
giving technical information on the routines. Thus, the tape has now
become an instructional one. The key point here is that this was
Eason's own decision. It does not change my earlier comment.

Re: MORE

First of all -- there has never been a proven case of a snuff film,
where a person was murdered on camera for the filming; not one. If you
are talking about the video compilations that are around, taken from
news footage, a lot of that is taken from on-air broadcasts -- so while
we may possibly deplore the taste of someone who watches it, there is
nothing remotely criminal about it.
Art does not need to be justified -- if it did, there would have to
be moral yardsticks for it, and I am sure you don't want that, being
opposed to censorship. Interestingly, in this connection, there's an
exhibit of "degenerate art" making the rounds; this is art the Nazis
considered degenerate because it didn't fit in with their philosophy.
There is a line in Orwell's 1984 where the antique shop owner,
looking at an object, says, "Yes, it is quite beautiful -- not beauty
as we know it today, of course; it serves no useful purpose." And
Oscar Wilde: "All art is quite useless."

The twenty-eighth set of MAGIC! messages - #3500 (May 25, 1991)
to #3999 (May 29, 1991) - has been transferred to a downloadable
file. The file is named MAGIC-28.TXT. This means that you can
now go to the file area, download this file, and read the twenty-
eighth volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to
use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-28.ZIP
and is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

Not only will transferring these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

Supposedly came in from South America, I believe. However, for the
purposes of this discussion, whether any have or have not been done to

definition of art condone it?

Re: MAGICUNIQUE

I think you hit on a central point concerning the ability for other
arts to cause the observer to see the world in a different way. Its
both an intellectual and emotional response that the spectator has
when he/she sees or hears a performance that brings to the surface
thoughts and/or emotions that they may never have experienced before.
.
It brings to mind a statement that Copperfield made in the introducti
on to Ammar's new book. "There are things one gives up when one becom
es a magician, like the experience of feeling the wonder yourself.
That grabbing, emotional sensation of amazement becomes a rare
personal experience for a magician. As children we become so enraptured
with the feeling that we devote our life to its pursuit, but sadly,
the more familiar we are with creating wonder, the more rare it is to
feel that sensation yourself".
.
Have you ever seen a magic performance that you thought was truly spe
cial AND YOU DIDN'T want to know how certain things were done. As lon
g as you don't know you can hold onto the feeling of amazement, once
you know how its done, you can never watch it again from the same
perspective.
.
Unfortunately, the human mind can't stand not knowing, so it will atte
mpt to 'explain' how something was done to resolve the cognitive diss
onance that was created by the effect. Once the mind has a satisfacto
ry explantion (which may be totally wrong) it can 'let go'. Magic is
like a puzzle or a riddle, until you have a solution it keeps popping
back into the conscious mind and must be resolved.
.
If however, the mind concludes that TRUE magic (see my comment 3604)
has been done, then the mind is forced to consider forces unknown to
science having been brought into play. When a mentalist shows his
'skill' the spectator does not have a conflict to resolve. The person
has powers that allow them to 'read minds' or move objects with their
unique power. Those that believe are SURE they have witnessed forces
they ALREADY believed in, whereas those that don't believe in psyhic
forces, dismiss it as mere trickery and generally aren't too impressd
.
Magic on the other hand, requires the spectator to 'believe' that
during the performance, the magician is exhibiting 'powers' that he
doesn't possess outside of the performance. The mentalist has these
powers AT ALL TIMES. Herein lies a major paradox.
.
Regarding Talent. Anyone can learn how to do magic tricks, it takes
TALENT to perform it in a meaningful and rewarding way. The magician
who is a performer first and foremost is striving to make his art
as strong as possible, and uses magic as a basis for that art.

Hope you do not mind me stepping into this conversation. I feel that
if one has not acquired the rights to perform something, then one
has not the right to do so. The mere fact that one has bought a tape
with a performance of something, something the working can be worked
out of, does not give one the right to perform, does it. Even if you
can work out the method of an effect, performing it is using
someone's thinking, while this person did not intend you to give the
explanation. If the effcet is explained on the tape, it could be a
different matter, although even in such a case I feel one should be
carefull. Was it explained with the intention of helping you to
perform it, or was it explained to help you understand the thinking
of the performer? I have few thoughts now and then which I would
certainly be willing to share. The problem is that the only way I
can share these thoughts, is by explaining the trick in question.
But even in such a case, where I would have to explain the trick in
order to make a thought clear, I would not like other people to do
this effect. It is a dilemma. What should I do? Not tell anything at
all? Can I explain an effect without allowing other people to use
the effect? Personally, I think we would be better off, if we did
not have the unwritten rule"If it is published, people are allowed
to perform it". This way I think we are missing opportunities to
learn about the thinking of other magicians, because many times the
best thinking is in the best tricks of people. I would love to
understand this thinking, the thinking which goes into these best
tricks. But you cannot blame someone to shut up if explaining some
of his thoughts would automatically imply that the trick can be
performed by others. Are we loosing because of this unwritten rule?
I would like to hear how some of you feel about this. For me it is a
little bit of a problem. Kind regards, Tommy..

Cheeez, now I just figured out what a "snuff flick" is. You're really
taking advantage of my good nature and So. Hospitality on this one. I
thought you were politely referring to skin flicks. You
cosmopolitites keep track of things a lot more than we do here at the
Hotel DeCarlo where the clocks stopped in 1938 never to be wound
again. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I would never condone murder,
only the rightous acts of enlightened vigalanteeism. As a side note,
you keep referring to the fact that you didn't bring up censorship,
bookburning, or a committee. The only way you can keep foreign ideas
from a conversation is to have one with your self assuming you only
have one personality.

Re: MORE

Now that you mentioned it, it is very clear how you could derive skin
flick from snuff flick - does make perfect Southern sense. Alas, the
term has another meaning.

Interesting that the clocks stopped in 1938. We have a BBS out here
called "1939." The sysop of it, a young man in his late teens/early
twenties, lives permanently in 1939. With a local radio station that
plays the music, stores that sell the clothing, etc. he can apparently
do it quite well.

As to my single personality, the origin of this thread concerned itself
with the artist's own moral responsibility. As the thread passed
through different hands the concept changed. I like to think that at
times it included some valuable points to ponder. I think that by now
it has done its job and it should be wound back on the spool.

I believe Jerry is working on (I HOPE Jerry is working on) a way to

"Word wrap" is when the program automagically "fixes" a word that would
otherwise be broken arbitrarily at the end of the line. MAGIC! has
wordwrap - if you type a word that is too long to fit on the line, it
is moved to the next line. Jerry is working on IMP! so that it will do
something similar.

Yes, in art absolutely anything does go -- because if it doesn't, you
have to decide according to what standards and yardsticks, and then it
is no longer art but something ground into someone's particular axe.
It is in fact much like freedom of speech. A lot of people couldn't
understand why the ACLU defended the Nazis a few years ago -- they
didn't get the point (as the ACLU did) that there is no such thing as
freedom of speech "except about that stuff." In the same way, art
subject to controls is no longer art.
In that connection, I have always found it fascinating that a 12 year
old kid, male or female, can go to a movie and see people literally
ripped apart or blown up in graphic detail -- but seeing people mae
love? Heavens no -- they might be influenced in a bad way...!

Re: MORE

I agree with you, T.A. I've often wondered why our society
sensationalizes death and violence, while at the same time, censors
life and love.

Oswald Spengler in his "Der Untergang Des Abendlandes (The Decline of
the West)" presented the theory that those who control the media,
control the masses. If this is so, what are they trying to do to us?

In a pioneer society, or underdeveloped agrarian for that matter, with
high death rates, love (and associated offspring) are definately
beneficial to the survival of the species. Yet in a climax ecosystem
with limited food and resources, and even more limited places to pee,
further population growth is decidedly DIS-advantageous. Are we not
rapidly reaching such a state?

It has been argued that the United States has about reached Z.P.G.
(zero population growth). Yet, on the whole, the population of this
planet is still growing exponentially. (And yes, it seems like they're
all moving to L.A.) World hunger is staggering, and we can't seem to
find any civilized means of killing off a large portion of the
population--nuclear war will kill everyone, diseases can be treated,
and limited wars are just too damn expensive these days.

So are we being turned against ourselves? Are we being groomed as a
generation of copy-cat killers? Or is this just a symptom of a
military-industrial complex gone far awry?

Maybe what we need most right now IS a little magic!

Very interesting, Evan. That is the first time I've seen the conundrum

You might reference the four books of the Douglas Adams trilogy as an
alternate hypothesis. But don't bother reading his later works as they
drift about him in a far too egocentric orbit.

Max -

The following appeared in the June Genii (reproduced with permission
from Dante Larsen):

"We have gotten wind of a new 30 minute variety show on FUJI T.V. which
has decided to air exposures on television. Not simple innuendoes but
full blown exposures. So far they have revealed an effect by Penn and
Teller which Penn and Teller don't even expose, The Metamorphosis, and
the Moretti's Sword Box. The program is hosted by the comedy team
'Ton-neruzu.' The Japan Professional Magicians Association has made a
protest but should you want to flood their mailbox with objections,
threats, and exploding dove pans you can write: Keija Namihisa, General
Manager and Hiroshi Ishida, Producer, both at Fuji Television, 3-1
Kawadacho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 162, Japan."

I'm told that they have told the Japanese magicians that they will
stop, but that there is some doubt that they really will. Do you know
any more about this? Would letters from here help?

Thanks.

Re: JUGGLING & MAGIC

Thanks for the information. I received the tape, with the booklet of
instructions, from Eason sans solicitation, so I was not aware of the
postcard procedure. This does complicate the issue in the case of this
particular tape: given that Eason did, at least for a while, provide
instructions, there is an established context which probably means your
friend is technically within his rights to consider the tape as an
instructional video.
However, I'll reiterate that this is a specific case, and does not
alter the situation regarding a performance video which is sold as such
(e.g., "Mindgames"), which does not come with any rights for the buyer
to use the material thereon.

This took place a few months ago. To my knowledge, there was only one

Re: REVEWZ

David--

Have you noticed that people seem relucatant to post reviews of books
and such on the BBS? Hmmmm, I wonder why.

I wonder, is there anyway to encourage such activity? It's one of the
things MAGIC! can really be good at -- delivering instantaneous
information on a new book or tape to a wide number of people.

I assume people are afraid, as I am, that anything negative they say
will be thrown back at them. Or that any even minorly inaccurate
statement will cause them to be tarred and feathered.

Anonymouse reviews wouldn't be right, I don't think, as it's sort of
antithetical to the BBS philosophy. Surely there must be some approach
his Sysop-ship can come up with to encourage this sort of thing?
There's a lot of books coming out in the next month or so...

Re: REVEWZ

There has been a suggestion to set up some type of review
questionnaire. But it will take some time to do so.

Meanwhile, the only other way is for people to be upfront and to
honestly state their views on something. It is possible to ignore the
"heat," if they get any, but simply not responding. I do that with my
postal mail - like Napoleon, I never open for a month.

I'd like to see some candid reviews on here. But, as some have
suggested, I think they are only valuable if the reviewer is
identified. Down the way we may work out a questionnaire and rely on
multiple views to overcome annonymous distortion.

Re: WHAT'S WRONG?

Just make sure Magic Menu is represented at the Music City Conclave
in Jan 1992 in Nashville. Ray is one of the lecturers booked for the
event. Will ship your package out to you when I get back from Tenn
next week. Will be staying at the Vandy Holiday Inn so can check out
the facilities, etc for MCCM I. Is the Noe Place adr good?

Re: NEW THREAD

Am glad to see Walter Blaney getting credit for that line. He's the
only guy who can use it legit, and every time I ever hear him say it
I laugh. He cracks me up even though I've got his act memorized. A
genuine jewel.

Re: REVEWZ

There was a time on MAGIC! when there was more info posted re: books
and related. I propose a new system of review that will actually
save the potential reader time. Below are some of my condensed
reviews on books that have come into the Old Principal's House
Library over the past few months.
Conjuror's Monthly Reprints - Expensive
The Aronson Approach - Boring
Works of Alex Elmsley - Fascinating
The Magic of Michael Ammar - Satisfying
Thavant - Worthit
There are several qualified reviewers online, but presenting a
book review worth reading takes time. I bemoan the fact that noone
theze daze puts out reviews like the Flemming reviews of daze gone
by. Jeff Busby put out some great reviews in Epoptica (I have a file
of these thanks to Jeff) and this is some of my fave reading. Maybe
he'll grace us with a new issue of Epoptica sometime soon. I also
contend that unless the reviewer of a book, etc is qualified; the
review is worth little, if not nothing. Basic criterion is that this
person can READ and will read the book.

Re: JUNE GENII

I haven't seen the June issue yet, but I couldn't agree with you more
about the super job Dante has been doing. The look over the last year
has been terrific - and the material has been great, too! The Burger
issue contained a Williamson piece in Magicana that rivals any magazine
piece published in recent memory. And I hear there are plenty of great
issue of Genii already lined up over the next year. Can't wait!
