But I guess that it is possible. Still it shouldn't have locked things up. What happens normally is that you download 100 messages but when you are reading, in IMP! or anything else, the file seems to end at, let's say, 50 messages. The EOF is responsible. When I prepare the MAGIC! messages files, I "kill" the EOF's by using a hexdump and hexeditor, but it is a pain. Once when I was smoking cigars, my sons and I were in line at a county fair to ride the tilt-a-whirl and the guy taking the tix was somking a big stogey. He saw us standing about twenty feet back in line (I was puffing on a Grenada) and motioned us forward and put us on the last car. The power of the stogey I guess. Amazed even me. When I was visiting Bill Smith last year we got to talking about Ballentine and he pointed to a corner of the shop and there was Carl's beat up old fibre road case resting quietly. He was making a new one for the mad genius of comedy and magic. I had to lay hands on the case in a worshipful moment. Its little things like that that make the difference to me. This so called "too perfect" theory is a dangerous one. It leads us to a rather cheap solution, just add a few suspicious moves to keep people from getting on the right track! That at the same time one puts attention on the fact that what you do is trickery is a rather high price. Would it not be better to find other ways to prevent people to get on the right track? For instance with the three maybe exchange the cards for regular ones? Would it not be better to have the trick be as good as it can be, and still keep people away from the solution? O.K., it will take a lot more work, but so what. I think that is better than lessening the effect. If this theory is applicable it does not mean the trick is "too perfect", it means the trick is not perfect yet! After all, if the too perfect theory would be true, why is it then that it is not always applicable. There are tricks which are utterly incomprehensible for the audience, with no danger that we bring them on the idea of what the method is. These tricks we certainly do not weaken, do we? The "too perfect" theory is only good for those people who do not want to work to make the tricks really better. I suppose this theory is loved by lazy people. By accepting this theory, we are condoning this cheap way out. I do not accept the "too perfect" theory, it is lousy, and bad for magic. A "not perfect yet" theory seems a lot better to me, it suggest making the trick stronger, the "too perfect" theory suggest making the trick weaker. --- * Origin: MAGIC!-NL, Home of the wizards, +31-23-388725 (2:0/0) --- Msg #6588 Dated 14:56:29 06-15-91 -> 6647 From: ARNAUD VANRIETSCHOTEN To: ALL Re: FISM OPENING GALA MAGIC!-NL Sat 15 Jun 91 13:10 Arnaud Van.Rietschoten posted the following msg: Please find below the program of the FISM openings gala in Lausanne. I'm not trying to goad or annoy you, but it is so EASY to use IMP! to just hang a thought onto an existing thread that the threads are a mess. Of course, they weren't exactly pristine pure before, but... Maybe we need some kind of batch file or processor in IMP! that "retires" downloads one behind. In other words, today I download A. Tommorow I download B. B gets concatenated to A. Day after, I download C. C gets catted to B and A gets "retired" to a .BAK file. Includes a mirror box once owned by Houdini, a 1938 Gilbert magic (no box) set in mint condition, some Brema stuff, a head-chopper, Archetect's nightmare, and a number of effects from the Thayer catalog. This gentleman purchased the stuff new in 1940-1945, and packed it up before being sent to Korea. He now wants to sell off this collection. I'm going to meet with him tomorrow (Sunday, 6/15) to review the collection and possibly make a bid on it. He's already accepted bids from a guy in S.F., a guy in Hawaii, and two guys from San Diego. I'm going to try and see if I can't make him a better offer, but being a little cash-poor at the moment, I'm afraid I may not be able to match the earlier bids, so I turn to the gang here. Anyone seriously interested in pooling our resources and perhaps going in on a collective bid, give me a call anytime tonight at (818) 894-0593 ask for Richard The book collection contains a few old Sphinx magazines, an old Genii magazine (Oct 31 issue with Bess Houdini on the cover), a copy of Greater Magic, etc. He wants to sell the collection in one piece. As I commented earlier, I think the theory is problematic, and it does not apply to many -- perhaps most -- tricks. However, there is more to the theory than the simple idea that strong tricks should be made weak (which is, of course, a terrible idea). I think there is merit in using the theory as one (of many) aspects of the analysis of a routine, as a means of staying aware of the spectators' direction of thought. I'm not sure there is _any_ theory which can be universally followed in the development of good magic. For example, Juan Tamariz has his "Theory of False Solutions," which has been around for a very long time but was never codified until he published it. It is an approach which can lead to some wonderful magic, but if you try to apply it to every routine you will have some very bad results. The value of Rick Johnsson's "Too Perfect" theory is, I think, not that it provides answers, but rather that it raises important questions. As such, it should not be dismissed so quickly. It included David Baer(?), Docc Hilford, and many other great acts. Next we went on to a lecture by John Cornelius which was great. Then at the witching hour of 12:15 there was a lecture by Docc Hilford (which was a perfect time for his WEERD! lecture). Saturday the 8 we started of with a great lecture by Chris Carey a great person with children. Moving right along we had the dealer show, there is some really great new illusions. Next came the workshops. I learned the crazy mans handcuffs. A really great lecture came next by Johnny Thompson the alter ego of THE GREAT TOMSINI! Another close up show with John Bannon, John Cornelius, Docc Hilford, and Johnny Thompson. Then came the great public show. The weekends "crown jewel": featuring the talents of Chris Carey, Jack Boyd, Michael Madden, Ian & Hillary Flora, David Gower, and The Great Tomsini & Company. Sunday June 9 brought on another great lecture by John Bannon (great close up). And last but not least Professor Brian Flora presented "Making a Living Doing Family Magic". We had found a church hall with a great stage, and even had the arrangements made for regular meetings, BUT they found out we were magicians and they changed their mind! Apparently they thought we were some kind of cult or something... Did anyone catch A&E REVUE on Friday (14th)? I caught the very end of it about a magician. Does any one know who this magician is? If it helps, the one effect of his I did see was a silk thru mirror effect with patter about a Chinese emperor who demanded to know the secret of the magic mirror. If you know who he his, does he have a TV show or tour coming up? That's certainly present with Otto and Jorgen; a bit softer with Topper and George; and, to me, not there with Avner. There's something quite different under the surface with him. A soccer referee dies and goes to heaven and is met at the pearly gates by St. Peter. St. Pete sez "We don't let just anyone into Heaven, only special people can come in." Well the referee replies that he was just that and do soccer referee's qualify. Yes, but only if they are good enough. Well he sez, I started as an amateur referee for AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) and worked my way up thru USSF and final to FIFA level. Well St. Pete was impressed, but he said "not good enough, we only take the best of the best". The referee replied that when he died he was as high as you could go in soccer refereeing, Chief Referee for FIFA. . Well that still wasn't good enough for St. Pete, he wanted something special, something that set this guy apart from his peers and showed he had really contributed something to the art or sport of soccer, a special something. . Well the referee replied, the last game I refereed was a World Cup final between Argentina and Brazil in Buenos Aires. With a minute to go in regulation time the score was tied 1-1 when an Argentinian fouled a Brazilian in his own penalty area. I had to call the foul and award Brazil a penalty shot. As time ran out the brazilians scored and won the game 2-1. . St Pete was really impressed, but replied, "Thats a real gutsy call, if you have a history of those we just might let you in." At this point the referee cried out in dispair, "HOW COULD I, THAT JUST HAPPENED THREE MINUTES AGO" . Substitute Magi for referee and we may just have something here. . Possibly I will add an archive section of practically unlimited (32000+) length for maintaining information on every trick anyone has ever heard of. . If you want an engineer's brains, they are $ 1,000 an ounce. If you want a plummer's brains, they are $ 1,500 an ounce. And if you want a magicican's brains, they are $ 10,000 an ounce." "Wow!" says the patient, "Engineers are $ 1,000, plummer's are $ 1,500, and magician's are $ 10,000 an ounce! Why are magician's brains so expensive?" Msg #6843 Dated 1:55:24 06-17-91 From: JERRY BURTON To: ALL Re: N I talked to Johnnie Ace this week concerning the Magical Arts Performance Workshop. He is interested, if and when it comes about. . During the conversation he mentioned he had just finished an 8 week teaching session with a satellite school in Long Beach (kinda of a performing arts school). He taught a bunch of 4th, 5th, & 6th graders magic technique and performance, 2 hours a week. The course was 5 days a week with Johnnie there 2 days and a teacher the other 3. . If you have ever attended his lecture you know of some of the principles he uses. One that is particularly powerful is X marks the spot (He demonstrates this by disappearing a coin, laying the coin on his knee - in plain view, but due to misdirection no one 'sees' it until he points it out. The coin is visible for probably 30 seconds, and no one sees it. He also uses it in the coin purse on the table). . During the kids performance of what they had learned, one kid blew Johnnie away with an application of the principle. After he disappear ed the coin, he said "You know where it went ? Its right down there" and pointed down on the floor by Johnnie's foot and there was a quarter the kid had planted probably 2 minutes before. It had been there all along. Randy Lund BSChE Msg #6882 Dated 16:28:11 06-17-91 -> 6890 From: RANDY LUND To: SYSOP Re: MAGIC3DB Well I have outlined and started the conversion to V3. Basically these are the new features: . Trick list up to 500 (for Sure) 1000 or user set possible, I'll try. . Book list up to 500 and must follow trick list in size . New information for the trick edit section, areas to write comments on spectator information, what kind to use, age, sex etc, lighting, staging, a audience reaction. . Whole new section to track customers and bookings, current capacities are 100 customers, max 50 bookings per customer. Usual info on customer, names address etc, seperate names address etc for performance location, fee audience type, facility, special requests etc and post show section to record comments, problems and lessons, also billing information. . A special thanks to Micheal Ammar, whose new book inspired the last two additions. . V1 & V2 would run off a HD floppy if anyone was so inclined, V3 will not. Data storage, without booking section is at 1meg with 500 tricks and I expect it will grow to the 3-5 range before I am done. Don't expect to be completed much before fall at the earliest. . Also archive section possible, with limits, basically in/out lists of books etc. As you may have guessed I crossed the magic threshold of multiple semi independent modules. So far it is staying in one complied EXE file which should fit what i plan, from then on its into overlays YUCH . Oooops... see when you put the brain in gear too quickly you forget Kohl and Co. Haven't seen the Magic Plumbers lately, they might be getting closer. Msg #6988 Dated 8:08:50 06-18-91 6957 <- From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: ARNAUD VANRIETSCHOTEN (X) Re: FISM- PROGRAM Fantastic, Arnaud! Thank you for the information. Sure wish I could be there, but will have to follow the news here on MAGIC! (via MAGIC-NL) this time. Msg #6990 Dated 8:11:27 06-18-91 6964 <--> 6991 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: CLOSING MESSAGE Some people use "scripts" that handle the entire log-on, read messages (and/or upload new messages), log-off operation. Since some scripts use special languages they are refered to by the type of file they generate. I always heard of it as ASP, but Jerry calls it ASX, hence ASX/ASP. Using a script, you can hit one key and watch the system handle the whole session for you. Theoretically, you wouldn't even need to be there - you could set it to go off at some hour like 4 a.m. I'm a little leary of such things in practice, but they do work most of the time if the script is well written. Between scripts, IMP!, and an "artificial intelligence" program, it will be eventually possible for your computer to log on to MAGIC!, download the messages, read them, create your replies, log on and upload them, and log off. You won't even need to be involved. They are very popular among undertakers. Msg #6992 Dated 8:18:43 06-18-91 6991 <--> 6993 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: CLOSING MESSAGE Also among politicians. Msg #6993 Dated 8:19:19 06-18-91 6973 <--> 7002 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: CLOSING MESSAGE Actually, despite his eventual fall from popularity, Marshall McLuhan said _some_ very profound things - The Medium is the Massage was a great concept. I suspect that it also made him a hero among the spiritualists. Msg #6994 Dated 8:23:22 06-18-91 6974 <--> 7007 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: SI! MAGIC IN PUERTO VALLA As a kid I used to count snakes. We used to go into the swamps and hunt water mocs. Got some pretty hair raising tales I could tell. Now those swamps (in South Florida) are all shopping centers. My nephew was hiking in Israel and an ASP (the snake, not to be confused with the scripting language) crawled into his backpack during a rest stop. His hiking buddy reached into the pack to get something and the Asp got him! It was no joke - the guy almost died. Asps have a long history in magic. Cleopatra used one to commit suicide. Msg #6997 Dated 8:31:11 06-18-91 6981 <--> 7009 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: SAT. These days, with magi wearing all kinds of weird outfits, a tux IS very creative and original! Personally, I'm tired of seeing all the gold chains, leisure suits, etc. Msg #6998 Dated 8:42:35 06-18-91 6963 <--> 7008 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: WHAT IF Jerry is now set to key off of the two right arrow brackets (two of these - >) marks, but others may not be, so I've changed it to (two left arrow brackets), the classic end statement, (two right arrow brackets). Notice that I am NOT showing what it looks like so that no-ones script or RDMAGIC program reads it in this message! Oh, well, we tried to be creative... NOTE: Msg #6999 was personal and does not appear in this file. --- END OF MAGIC-34 ---
