At what point do you think that "hobby magic" started making some

Have never tried Powers Irish, is it avail in the US. When we were in
Dublin a few years ago promoting some music we had the best Irish
Coffee ever. The waiter told us how it was done. Coffee, two heaping
spoons of sugar and a shot of Jamison Irish. If Powers is avail I'll
find it in DC.

I have the little "Newmann, Pioneer Mentalist" book put out by David
Meyer Books and read it with interest. Unfortunately, it didn't
contain a whole lot of information. Most of it was taken up with
Newmann's claims to have the largest magic, etc book collection in
the US - world?? - but it whetted my appetite and I'd like more info
about C.A.Geo.Newmann. I don't remember hearing about the mental manu
scripts, but might have and just didn't have the $$ to try for one at
the time. Is the limited edition in your library there at the MC.

As far as details of Pete's special are concerned, I'd imagine he'll

much talk sinks specials, or something like that. BTW, thanks for the
info on the WG. I'm not sure when I'll finish the treatment, I wrote

Re: I'M BACK

Normally, a received EOF does not lock up your computer, it just shows
on the screen as a right pointing arrow. But I guess that it is
possible. Still it shouldn't have locked things up. What happens
normally is that you download 100 messages but when you are reading, in
IMP! or anything else, the file seems to end at, let's say, 50
messages. The EOF is responsible. When I prepare the MAGIC! messages
files, I "kill" the EOF's by using a hexdump and hexeditor, but it is
a pain.

I ate in a nice Northern Italian restaurant last week and saw a
painting I really liked. I called the waiter over and asked if the
painting was for sale. He excused himself and brought back the owner.
After introductory formalities, I again inquired if the painting was
for sale. The owner apologized profusely and said, "No, the painting
is not for sale....but the restuarant is!"

No, Tab....sorry to report that Powers Irish in no longer imported
here. It was up until about five or six years ago. The problem is
that one U.S. importer has tied up all the Irish whiskeys and decided
that he didn't want to compete with himself in this market.
Consequently, both Powers and Paddy's are no longer available here.

Hard to put a date on it -- a long process -- though the Hoffmann books

My fondest memory of Eire (I'm Brit-Scot) was crossing the hinterland
between NI and Free Ireland. Everything in NI was so controlled, good
lighting on streets, etc. After crossing through Check Point Paddy
everything got so dark and the four lane turned into 2 with people
on moterbikes and cars traveling both ways down the middle of the
road at high speed. Getting to Dublin and the Irish Coffee was a
great repast. I do remember all the beautiful smiling faces that
wern't evident in No Ireland. And the friendly people. Hope to get

I agree about the Newmann bio not having much meat in it. Same with
the Doc Nixon book which was put out by Modern Litho, though it had
some photos of Doc, etc in the shop working on stuff which I always
enjoy. The story of the "dissapearance" of Doc Nixon is a fascinating
study and one of which I had more info. How many volumes (ballpark)
do you have in ya'lls library there at the Fortress? Can understand
about the "locked" section in light of the stories I've heard of
aholees (Ah, a good Hawaiian word for Hangers - Aholees) ripping
stuff off in there. The new Steinmeyer book looks promising though...

Am glad to hear that Ballentine is a "nice guy". Once when I was
smoking cigars, my sons and I were in line at a county fair to ride
the tilt-a-whirl and the guy taking the tix was somking a big stogey.
He saw us standing about twenty feet back in line (I was puffing on
a Grenada) and motioned us forward and put us on the last car. The
power of the stogey I guess. Amazed even me. When I was visiting Bill
Smith last year we got to talking about Ballentine and he pointed to
a corner of the shop and there was Carl's beat up old fibre road case
resting quietly. He was making a new one for the mad genius of comedy
and magic. I had to lay hands on the case in a worshipful moment. Its
little things like that that make the difference to me.

Re: "TOO PERFECT"

MAGIC!-NL Fri 14 Jun 91 20:13
Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:

There must be something wrong somewhere with the "Too perfect"
theory. The theory does not seem to be all that perfect itself! The
discussion on mental effects done in a magic show is I think a
different thing, but the theory is also applied to "regular" magic.
"Too perfect" is a paradox! The three card monte of Michael Skinner
can be a good example. If you do it without adding a few suspicious
moves, it becomes too incredible and leads the audience towards the
solution? Does that not mean that somehow the trick is NOT perfect
enough? This so called "too perfect" theory is a dangerous one. It
leads us to a rather cheap solution, just add a few suspicious moves
to keep people from getting on the right track! That at the same
time one puts attention on the fact that what you do is trickery is
a rather high price. Would it not be better to find other ways to
prevent people to get on the right track? For instance with the three
maybe exchange the cards for regular ones? Would it not be better to
have the trick be as good as it can be, and still keep people away
from the solution? O.K., it will take a lot more work, but so what.
I think that is better than
lessening the effect. If this theory is applicable it does not mean
the trick is "too perfect", it means the trick is not perfect yet!
After all, if the too perfect theory would be true, why is it then
that it is not always applicable. There are tricks which are utterly
incomprehensible for the audience, with no danger that we bring them
on the idea of what the method is. These tricks we certainly do not
weaken, do we? The "too perfect" theory is only good for those
people who do not want to work to make the tricks really better. I
suppose this theory is loved by lazy people. By accepting this
theory, we are condoning this cheap way out. I do not accept the
"too perfect" theory, it is lousy, and bad for magic. A "not perfect
yet" theory seems a lot better to me, it suggest making the trick
stronger, the "too perfect" theory suggest making the trick weaker.

What we need is the thing to start NEW threads! I'm not trying to goad
or annoy you, but it is so EASY to use IMP! to just hang a thought onto
an existing thread that the threads are a mess. Of course, they
weren't exactly pristine pure before, but...

Maybe we need some kind of batch file or processor in IMP! that
"retires" downloads one behind. In other words, today I download A.
Tommorow I download B. B gets concatenated to A. Day after, I
download C. C gets catted to B and A gets "retired" to a .BAK file.
When D arrives, it is catted to C, B goes to .BAK, and A goes either
into a long term file, if the person wants it, or to the bit bucket.

Re: COLLECTORS!

Ok, gang. I've just got a line on a fellow who has a collection of
magic props from Thayer, Wallace, etc. and 85 magic books all dating
from 1900-1940's. Includes a mirror box once owned by Houdini, a 1938
Gilbert magic (no box) set in mint condition, some Brema stuff, a
head-chopper, Archetect's nightmare, and a number of effects from the
Thayer catalog.

This gentleman purchased the stuff new in 1940-1945, and packed it up
before being sent to Korea. He now wants to sell off this collection.

I'm going to meet with him tomorrow (Sunday, 6/15) to review the
collection and possibly make a bid on it. He's already accepted bids
from a guy in S.F., a guy in Hawaii, and two guys from San Diego.
I'm going to try and see if I can't make him a better offer, but being
a little cash-poor at the moment, I'm afraid I may not be able to match
the earlier bids, so I turn to the gang here.

Anyone seriously interested in pooling our resources and perhaps going
in on a collective bid, give me a call anytime tonight at

            (818) 894-0593 ask for Richard

The book collection contains a few old Sphinx magazines, an old Genii
magazine (Oct 31 issue with Bess Houdini on the cover), a copy of
Greater Magic, etc. He wants to sell the collection in one piece.
If you're interested, give me a call. If you're interested in joining
me tomorrow to view the collection, he lives in the Culver City/Palms
area. Call me and we can arrange something.

This is HOT, so act now

all me.

Re: "TOO PERFECT"

Tommy: I think your reaction to the "Too Perfect" theory is too hasty.
As I commented earlier, I think the theory is problematic, and it does
not apply to many -- perhaps most -- tricks. However, there is more to
the theory than the simple idea that strong tricks should be made weak
(which is, of course, a terrible idea). I think there is merit in using
the theory as one (of many) aspects of the analysis of a routine, as a
means of staying aware of the spectators' direction of thought.

I'm not sure there is _any_ theory which can be universally followed in
the development of good magic. For example, Juan Tamariz has his
"Theory of False Solutions," which has been around for a very long time
but was never codified until he published it. It is an approach which
can lead to some wonderful magic, but if you try to apply it to every
routine you will have some very bad results.

The value of Rick Johnsson's "Too Perfect" theory is, I think, not that
it provides answers, but rather that it raises important questions. As
such, it should not be dismissed so quickly.

Sure!!! Some of the great people I met were Mel Stover, Brian Flora,

with the junior magicians contest. Then we went right on to the close
up show. The performers were Al Schneider, Jack Boyd, James Currie,
and Mary Tomich. Next was the cabaret show which was great. It
included David Baer(?), Docc Hilford, and many other great acts. Next
we went on to a lecture by John Cornelius which was great. Then at the
witching hour of 12:15 there was a lecture by Docc Hilford (which was
a perfect time for his WEERD! lecture). Saturday the 8 we started of
with a great lecture by Chris Carey a great person with children.
Moving right along we had the dealer show, there is some really great
new illusions. Next came the workshops. I learned the crazy mans
handcuffs. A really great lecture came next by Johnny Thompson the
alter ego of THE GREAT TOMSINI! Another close up show with John
Bannon, John Cornelius, Docc Hilford, and Johnny Thompson. Then came
the great public show. The weekends "crown jewel": featuring the
talents of Chris Carey, Jack Boyd, Michael Madden, Ian & Hillary Flora,
David Gower, and The Great Tomsini & Company. Sunday June 9 brought
on another great lecture by John Bannon (great close up). And last but
not least Professor Brian Flora presented "Making a Living Doing Family
Magic". Even though this was my first convention, it will probly be my
most memoribal.

Well, It's about time for PCAM. This will be my first Magic convention.
I can't wait. Apparently Carl Ballantine isn't feeling well, and won't
be attending the convention as planned. If any one of you has contact
with him, tell him the conventioneers will be thinking of him, and hope
he gets better.

Interesting item: As our usual SAM#112 meeting place in being converted
back into a school, we have been looking for a new place to meet. We
had found a church hall with a great stage, and even had the
arrangements made for regular meetings, BUT they found out we were
magicians and they changed their mind! Apparently they thought we were
some kind of cult or something...

Did anyone catch A&E REVUE on Friday (14th)? I caught the very end of
it about a magician. Does any one know who this magician is? If it
helps, the one effect of his I did see was a silk thru mirror effect
with patter about a Chinese emperor who demanded to know the secret of
the magic mirror. If you know who he his, does he have a TV show or
tour coming up?

Yes, there was a fair amount of unhappiness at the time that Hoffmann

A rough estimate is around 5100 items, not including the magazine files

The Steinmeyer book is excellent; my review of it, which will appear

a fair statement.

The thirty-first set of MAGIC! messages - #5000 (June 6, 1991)
to #5499 (June 11, 1991) - has been transferred to a downloadable
file. The file is named MAGIC-31.TXT. This means that you can
now go to the file area, download this file, and read the thirty-
first volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to
use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-31.ZIP
and is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

Not only will transferring these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

Are you using IMP ? Your msgs are sequential and correspond to the
order I put in my original msgs. I plan to redo the program today to
display the submenu at the end, rather than just automatically adding
an S. I need to figure out what A,C,D,E,H,I,L,M,N,S,U,? all mean.
I know S is for save, and U is for Unthread (whatever that means),
the others are so obvious.
.
Do recommend providing them all or just a subset ? Let me know ASAP.
.
I had a thought concerning the inability to go backward to see what
msg a given reply was to. If each days mesgs were added to a master
file using function 5, and the system would keep a BEGIN pointer
that would point to the beginning of a given days files then your
new viewing would start at the BEGIN point. I can modify the program
to remember where you are in the file, so that when you do a <-

it to get back (forward) to the msg you were viewing when you hit the
<-.

Starting today there will be 2 versions of the program. One using
the old functions so I can incorporate the suggestions people make

Re: SAT.

I know what you mean, but I still wouldn't put Avner on the list. This
has nothing to do with my opinion of Avner; he is superb. But I think
a key ingredient in your "wild" definition would have to be a quality
of being on the edge, on the verge of losing control -- sort of a
frenzy that's bubbling just beneath the surface. That's certainly
present with Otto and Jorgen; a bit softer with Topper and George; and,
to me, not there with Avner. There's something quite different under
the surface with him.
I would add Bob Read to the "wild" list. By the way, did you know
that Bob just quit his job? He's probably going to go full-time pro, at
long last. File that for next year's IBM booking...

Re: HEAVEN JOKES

Here's a died and gone to heaven joke that I think fits Evan, Wayne,
Max etc. real well.
.
A soccer referee dies and goes to heaven and is met at the pearly gates
by St. Peter. St. Pete sez "We don't let just anyone into Heaven, only
special people can come in." Well the referee replies that he was just
that and do soccer referee's qualify. Yes, but only if they are good
enough. Well he sez, I started as an amateur referee for AYSO
(American Youth Soccer Organization) and worked my way up thru USSF and
final to FIFA level. Well St. Pete was impressed, but he said "not
good enough, we only take the best of the best". The referee replied
that when he died he was as high as you could go in soccer refereeing,
Chief Referee for FIFA.
.
Well that still wasn't good enough for St. Pete, he wanted something
special, something that set this guy apart from his peers and showed he
had really contributed something to the art or sport of soccer, a
special something.
.
Well the referee replied, the last game I refereed was a World Cup
final between Argentina and Brazil in Buenos Aires. With a minute to
go in regulation time the score was tied 1-1 when an Argentinian fouled
a Brazilian in his own penalty area. I had to call the foul and award
Brazil a penalty shot. As time ran out the brazilians scored and won
the game 2-1.
.
St Pete was really impressed, but replied, "Thats a real gutsy call, if
you have a history of those we just might let you in." At this point
the referee cried out in dispair, "HOW COULD I, THAT JUST HAPPENED
THREE MINUTES AGO"
.
Substitute Magi for referee and we may just have something here.
.
Randy

Re: MAGIC3DB

I decided to go ahead with V3 of MAGICdB. I wanted the ideas from
Micheal Ammars new book incorporated in my database anyway. V3, when
it is ready for release will have the following new features.
.
A section similar to the patter for Spectator, Lighting, Staging and
audience reaction data.
.
Increase the trick database to at least 500, maybe larger
.
Possibly I will add an archive section of practically unlimited
(32000+) length for maintaining information on every trick anyone has
ever heard of.
.
Given the generally poor response for either cash (none) or ideas from
the BB I probably will not release this version generally on the board,
but will supply it on disk with manual at some reasonable quid pro quo.
Maybe Tabman and I can work something out for one of those magic wands.
etc. As soon as I get it up and fully functional I'll send you a copy
for your evaluation and use.
.
Thanks for all the help and kind words
Randy

As to the message submenu - type a ? at it or an H for Help and all
commands except for New-Subject, will be explained. Since many are
editing commands - Continue, Delete, Insert, List, and Abort - I don't
think you will need to incorporate them into IMP! But you might

I have to agree with Tabby and Pete. I, too, never used the MAGICDB
because of my large library and I would be very interested in the new
program. Please reconsider posting the upgrade on the board. In spite
of the absolutely ridiculous comment that we don't "understand" the
shareware concept (like it's some really deep subject), I have
registered dozens of programs with authors that I _use_. That,
naturally, is the operative word. I would be more than happy to
register the upgrade once I am sure it meets all of my needs (as
MAGICDB3 sounds like it will). I, for one, appreciate your efforts in
this area, Randy. Please rethink posting an evaluation copy.

excellent job with MAGIC2DB and since it was downloaded a LOT, and
since he never received EVEN ONE check, that it was justified.

Re: MAKING ONE'S OWN SPECIAL

If you are doing it for stage rather than close-up, you can get away
with a different level of "passable." I've done custom jumbo cards for
such shows and used a computer graphics package and a laser printer.
There was a long message I posted about this technique - maybe Jerry
can locate it.

Modifying or creating "passable" cards for close-up work could be much
more difficult. I too will look forward to any hints others may have.

Probably the same with me. I got Modern and More from my grandma who

or 7. It is still my favorite trick. I've heard about Johnny Gaughan

I agree that if any one is using MAGIC2DB and didn't pay the piper
that constitutes an abuse of the shareware system. I must confess
that one of my music programs SIDEMAN which I uploaded shareware to
CIS Midi Forum was downloaded over 200 times and NOT ONE cent in
tribute arrived so I don't have a lot of faith in the shareware
concept, though others with broader usage programs - PC-Write, etc
did make some money. Oh well....time marches on!

If only a few and you can draw 'em by hand go for it.

Re: SAT.

I will take some credit, of course. But the real plan was this. I
was very impressed with mssrs. Coby and James. We had several phone
calls where I aksed them to pull in all the acts in 'THEIR' vein.
Then we sat down in Hollywood for a lengthy meeting and went over
the plan. They came up with the individuals and I OK'd everything,
lock stock and barrel -- since I agreed with thier taste, etc.
The only change was that one of the top acts, Arturo Brachetti, was
booked to do a TV series and had to drop out. His replacement, Vito
Lupo, with HIS NEW ACT was well worth it... And hey, we still have
Brachetti to look forward to!
The confidence that Jim Nagel and Bill Wells have in ME and my
confidence in Coby/James all made it work.
This, despite my booking of Dr. Magic. Proving once again, the
Right guys are in charge at the IBM. And the politicians that want
to boot them out should go fishing or something.
I firmly believe we (IBM Convention committee -- and funding from
NHK) have been able to bring more top talent to conventions than
anyone else. PERIOD.

You cannot copyright a title. The only legal protection a title can
have is if it contains a living person's name, e.g., THE MAGIC OF
MICHAEL AMMAR, or even MAGIC I THINK MICHAEL AMMAR MIGHT LIKE -- you
could in fact sell a new book titled GREATER MAGIC, unwise though it
would be. A few years ago there were three different major novels on
the market all titled BLOODLINE -- so that when one of them became a
miniseries it had to be titled "Sidney Sheldon's BLOODLINE."

Magic may be too small a community to truly support the shareware
concept. Some general application products such as QModem, PC-Write,
etc. have made their authors a tidy sum. Let's see if MAGIC3DB, with
the enhancements, can work for Randy. In truth, he isn't really
planning on quiting his day job to live off of MAGIC3DB, but sending in
a check for shareware that one does use is the right way to say "thank

A jumbo card will fit thru a laser printer without too much problem,
although the thickness can cause it to jam. I don't know if a regular
card, attached to a feeder sheet, will go through without a problem.
Same with copiers - some will probably do it, some will not.

printers like Epson - you could print to a sheet of paper and then
transfer with an iron, but I don't know if this is still available.

When viewing a msg on the screen that has a backward pointer, .e.g.
6698 <--> 6730, shows on line 1 when viewing msg # 6729, you can
hit the (single) back-arrow key and IMP will go get the msg 6698.
.
I'm making a change so that after reading 6698, all you have to do
is hit Enter to return to 6729, which is where you were when you hit
the back-arrow.
.
To go forward in a thread hit the right-arrow (mine is below the 6 on
the keypad) and you will be shown 6730. Hitting enter after reading
6730 will move you back to 6729. Hitting Enter will move you to the
msg in the file (skipping any msgs you have already read using the
forward-arrow) and the base pointer is moved forward as well. The
base pointer is moved by either stepping thru the messages or using
the F(ind) or N(ext) functions.
.
Jeez - I'll have to pull all these bits and pieces together and write
a manual, not my strongest suit. Are you listening David ?

Re: WHAT IF

When viewing a msg on the screen that has a backward pointer, .e.g.
6698 <--> 6730, shows on line 1 when viewing msg # 6729, you can
hit the (single) back-arrow key and IMP will go get the msg 6698.

OK, Randy - how about this one...

I'm going to do the brief version - anyone can do the embelishments
they'd like.

A surgeon comes in and tells a fellow that he is going to need a brain
transplant.

"A brain transplant?" he says, "I didn't know you could do that."

"Oh, yes," says the surgeon, "In some cases we can. But we have to
talk about the cost. If you want an engineer's brains, they are $ 1,000
an ounce. If you want a plummer's brains, they are $ 1,500 an ounce.
And if you want a magicican's brains, they are $ 10,000 an ounce."

"Wow!" says the patient, "Engineers are $ 1,000, plummer's are $ 1,500,
and magician's are $ 10,000 an ounce! Why are magician's brains so
expensive?"

"Well," says the surgeon, "Do you know how many magicans you've got to
go through to find an ounce of brains?"

Rim shot!

P.S. to Pete: We know all about unused ones.

Re: N

I talked to Johnnie Ace this week concerning the Magical Arts
Performance Workshop. He is interested, if and when it comes about.
.
During the conversation he mentioned he had just finished an 8 week
teaching session with a satellite school in Long Beach (kinda of a
performing arts school). He taught a bunch of 4th, 5th, & 6th graders
magic technique and performance, 2 hours a week. The course was 5
days a week with Johnnie there 2 days and a teacher the other 3.
.
If you have ever attended his lecture you know of some of the
principles he uses. One that is particularly powerful is X marks the
spot (He demonstrates this by disappearing a coin, laying the coin on
his knee - in plain view, but due to misdirection no one 'sees' it
until he points it out. The coin is visible for probably 30 seconds,
and no one sees it. He also uses it in the coin purse on the table).
.
During the kids performance of what they had learned, one kid blew
Johnnie away with an application of the principle. After he disappear
ed the coin, he said "You know where it went ? Its right down there"
and pointed down on the floor by Johnnie's foot and there was a
quarter the kid had planted probably 2 minutes before. It had been
there all along. Good student to 'fool' the teacher.

Re: MAGIC3DB

Working lists (those normally searched and sorted to make up show
lists) are limited by RAM to keep performance up. Archive list need
only be limited by disk space, but that can get fairly heavy for what
the program is. Current V3 (in transition now from V2) takes just over
a meg for storage and may increase to just over 2. Unlimited archive
could run that up to 10 meg or more depending on data stored.
.
I would be interested in your ideas for what information you would like
to see in an unlimited archive file. Searches would have to be limited
as would flags and sorts out unless your want to leave it running for
the weekend.

No, I don't think I will upload V3 to the network. The response as
shareware has been extremely disappointing and the work to modify the
system to substantially larger databases required a complete
restructuring of the database and a lot of work. V2 which is on the BB
makes a fine evaluation copy for the existing features which remain the
same exept for size and you will certainly get a feel for the new
features.

Re: MAGIC3DB

Well I have outlined and started the conversion to V3. Basically these
are the new features:
.
Trick list up to 500 (for Sure) 1000 or user set possible, I'll try.
.
Book list up to 500 and must follow trick list in size
.
New information for the trick edit section, areas to write comments on
spectator information, what kind to use, age, sex etc, lighting,
staging, a audience reaction.
.
Whole new section to track customers and bookings, current capacities
are 100 customers, max 50 bookings per customer. Usual info on
customer, names address etc, seperate names address etc for performance
location, fee audience type, facility, special requests etc and post
show section to record comments, problems and lessons, also billing
information.
.
A special thanks to Micheal Ammar, whose new book inspired the last two
additions.
.
V1 & V2 would run off a HD floppy if anyone was so inclined, V3 will
not. Data storage, without booking section is at 1meg with 500 tricks
and I expect it will grow to the 3-5 range before I am done. Don't
expect to be completed much before fall at the earliest.
.
Also archive section possible, with limits, basically in/out lists of
books etc. As you may have guessed I crossed the magic threshold of
multiple semi independent modules. So far it is staying in one
complied EXE file which should fit what i plan, from then on its into
overlays YUCH

Randy,V3 sounds excellent especially the newly inspired sections.
This has gotta be a labour of love. What language are you working
in, or did you tell us already. Am asking because of the portability
of "C". Have talked to a number of magic people who are using Macs
and even some Amigas. Richard Hart can get a cross compiler for the
Amiga. I hear he may be crossing IMP! over in that direction when
Jerry gets the Beta Ver. happening. Best to you and looking forward
to the Professional Version of MagicDB.

Working here at The Hotel DeCarlo towards months end will be Pete
Biro of Walnut Creek, California and Dave "Wooga Wooga" Lichtman of
Arleta, California. On the 27th the menu will feature a variety of
native barbecue and Gloria's South Georgia Brundswick Stew as well
as guest spots featuring Scott "Seance" Davis, Bill Wells, and Rudy
a local cardman who got into magic to help him recover from a severe
attack of MS. Rudy was hospitolized right after the Doc Eason lecture
in the DC area and card fanned his way out of the hospitol again.
That's magic in action and it increases the value of the art tenfold.
Other guests will include cutout likenesses of the guests of the
tabman luncheon at the Castle. Hotel DeCarlo, La Paz, Bolivia. Si!

I agree, but Pete was asking about a wild character, I naturally
assumed he had to do magic to the standards we all would consider
strong. Danny has some very original stuff. Some people are put off
by his 'Mad-Hatter' appearance, but that's their problem. I have
heard several guys at the castle make comments about his conformance
to the dress code, and have also heard others immediately come to his
defense - with comments like "So what, he's a great magician".

Re: FISM- PROGRAM

Fantastic, Arnaud! Thank you for the information. Sure wish I could
be there, but will have to follow the news here on MAGIC! (via
MAGIC-NL) this time.

Re: CLOSING MESSAGE

Some people use "scripts" that handle the entire log-on, read messages
(and/or upload new messages), log-off operation. Since some scripts
use special languages they are refered to by the type of file they
generate. I always heard of it as ASP, but Jerry calls it ASX, hence
ASX/ASP.

Using a script, you can hit one key and watch the system handle the
whole session for you. Theoretically, you wouldn't even need to be
there - you could set it to go off at some hour like 4 a.m. I'm a
little leary of such things in practice, but they do work most of the
time if the script is well written.

Between scripts, IMP!, and an "artificial intelligence" program, it
will be eventually possible for your computer to log on to MAGIC!,
download the messages, read them, create your replies, log on and
upload them, and log off. You won't even need to be involved.

Re: CLOSING MESSAGE

A euphemism is "the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive
expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant."
They are very popular among undertakers.

Also among politicians.

Re: CLOSING MESSAGE

Actually, despite his eventual fall from popularity, Marshall McLuhan
said _some_ very profound things - The Medium is the Massage was a
great concept. I suspect that it also made him a hero among the
spiritualists.

Re: SI! MAGIC IN PUERTO VALLA

As a kid I used to count snakes. We used to go into the swamps and
hunt water mocs. Got some pretty hair raising tales I could tell. Now
those swamps (in South Florida) are all shopping centers.

My nephew was hiking in Israel and an ASP (the snake, not to be
confused with the scripting language) crawled into his backpack during
a rest stop. His hiking buddy reached into the pack to get something
and the Asp got him! It was no joke - the guy almost died.

Asps have a long history in magic. Cleopatra used one to commit
suicide.

Re: IMP TEST E FUNCTION TO AL

Very relevant! The new version isn't up yet - Jerry had a problem
uploading it.

Re: SAT.

These days, with magi wearing all kinds of weird outfits, a tux IS very
creative and original! Personally, I'm tired of seeing all the gold
chains, leisure suits, etc.

Re: WHAT IF

Jerry is now set to key off of the two right arrow brackets (two of
these - >) marks, but others may not be, so I've changed it to (two
left arrow brackets), the classic end statement, (two right arrow
brackets). Notice that I am NOT showing what it looks like so that
no-ones script or RDMAGIC program reads it in this message!

Oh, well, we tried to be creative...

NOTE: Msg #6999 was personal and does not appear in this file.
