When I first saw Dingle to his version I was amazed when the top
card of each block was the revelation... BUT WAS FLOORED when the
blocks were spread to reveal the Royal Flushes...
on the Four Ace Assembly (yawn) I figure you can borrow a shuffled
deck. Do no search, no set up, use no stack, no gaffs and JUST DEAL
THE CARDS ONTO THE TABLE "AS IF YOU WERE DOING THE TRICK" and just
roll right through it using ALL YOUR PRESENTATION SKILLS and some
great talk... AND IT WOULDN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. Only the front
row would know all the cards were wrong.

Re: PCAM91.957
It seems to me that it is unlikely that statements on book jackets will
prove to be very enforceable. Particularly since it would require
costly litigation in which, even if one prevailed, the judgement might
not ever be collected (face it, most magi haven't got a million
dollars).
And it is unlikely that a registration system similar to the one in the
music business is likely to occur. After all, people have been talking
about it for a number of years and it hasn't happened yet. Again, it
may be a case of economics.
Maybe the way to go on magical issues is to find a way to have people
submit to BINDING ARBITRATION. This might be relatively easy to set up
in that an agreement for it could actually be built right in to the IBM
and SAM membership requirements. Using the rules of the American
Arbitration Association, the arbitrators could be established as a
panel of MAGICIANS. Since they would understand the issues, conflicts
could be resolved easily, quickly and inexpensively. Another advantage
would be protection of secrets - under this approach, they would not be
revealed in open court.

For some strange reason, the beginnings of your paragraphs and some

You sure you are starting each line correctly in RDMAGIC? And that
your communications settings are right? You might want to communicate

Well, if you check into copyrights, etc; you'll find that getting
paid is one of the key criterion for assessing infringement. If an

key is did the guy with the priprietary rights loose money on the

Re: PCAM DAY 2
I think that "bad magic" hurts magic more than "bad music" hurts the
music biz. I think people usually expect (on bottom levels) that a
band will be bad since the top guys get big bux; however, I don't
think people (this is again on the bottom $$ levels) expect a
magician to be lousy. But again, I think most people (buyers of any
kind of talent) are astute enuff to know that one gets what one pays
for. If a "good" magician just starting out sets his fee structure
low and buyers are "blown away" then in no time at all he/she is
making decent money and getting plenty of work. Happens all the time.

1) Your message is a little garbled -- are a few lines missing, or out

2) Practicing lawyer or no, Weber can write anything he likes on the
lecture notes, that doesn't mean it would hold up. Witness the stub of
any parking garage that tells you it isn't responsible for any theft,
damage, etc -- the language on those stubs can say whatever they want,
doesn't mean they would hold up.
The difference between a play, or any written work, and the MATERIAL in
the lecture notes is everything, and this is what I'm curious about.
Clearly the WRITING is protected. The effects -- they're another
thing.
Someone will have the answer -- i'm pretty sure there's a clear one.

Establishing a royalty situation should strengthen magic. I do howeve
r feel that amateurs buy the books so they can do the tricks and that
this situation should be allowed to continue. If you're doing shows
then you should pay. Everytime a song that is covered by BMI or Harry
Fox (the agencies that collect my and other royalties) I eventually
get a few cents. Same with cable tv and record sales. It is a complex
proceedure, but one that I like. Another However, to get paid I MUST
REGISTER the stuff with the appropriate agency. The only way to
protect yourself, is to protect yourself and not trust the other

Re: PERF. RIGHTS
I think the issue of restrictions on performance rights for published
and/or marketed magic is one that should be discussed _without_ jumping
into the area of copyright law. For most people I know, the law is
something that is frequently bent or ignored in many areas, and often
has little to do with the specifics of "right" and "wrong" in a given
situation. Too, copyright law is notoriously confusing and frequently
problematic. So, I contend, the discussion is hindered, not helped, by
such referencing.
The basic issue, it seems to me, is that the creator of a work ought to
have the right to decide the conditions under which it is distributed.
This right extends to someone whose conditions are unreasonable; if
you, the potential purchaser, are unhappy with those conditions, you
have the option of not buying (and thus not using) the work.
The above is, of course, predicated on clear explanation of such
conditions up front. Hiding those terms inside a shrink-wrapped book
(e.g., the last Cervon volume) is no good. Posting them on the outside
of the book (e.g., Weber's "Life Savers") is better. The next step is
to make sure that information goes into the advertisements.
My own policy on the thousand-plus items I've released is simple: if
you buy the book/magazine/trick, you have the right to perform it,
where- or whenever. If you don't buy it, it's not yours to do.
But that's _my_ decision. I happen to think that Michael Weber's
restrictions on his new book are somewhat unreasonable -- but it is his
right to claim it.
There was an interview on Arsenio Hall a couple of weeks back, with
Robert Palmer, who told an anecdote concerning his last album. He was
set to record an old Broadway tune (Rogers & Hammerstein, I believe).
The lyrics of one verse had 1940s references that he could not relate
to, so he re-wrote the lyrics. Just before recording, he was contacted
by the songwriters' estate, and told in no uncertain terms that he was
_not allowed_ to record the song with any other than the original
words. So, he had to stick to them. Now, perhaps another songwriter
would be less restrictive, and perhaps this estate was being
unreasonable (after all, this particular song was well known, so the
album-buyer would have access to the original version) -- but it was
their right to be unreasonable.
Perhaps at some point there will be an organization in this country
similar to the French SACEM, which allows routines to be registered.
Until then, I think it's important for magicians to approach this type
of problem from a standpoint of ethical consideration, rather than the
semantic juggling of existing copyright laws.
Years ago, George S. Kaufman learned that one of his plays was done by
a summer stock company, sans royalties. The producer justified this by
saying, "After all, it's only a small, insignificant theater." Kaufman
responded, "Then you'll go to a small, insignificant jail."

Re: NAME IT
Got it - OK, everyone, Pete sez you read it here first!
By the way, can now reveal more of the Inside Magic story -
The new magazine that will replace Inside Magic is called:
M A G I C - An Independent Magazine for Magicians
(Notice - NO ! after M A G I C; nor is MAGIC! affiliated with the new
magazine in any way).
Early issues will include a Tricks section edited by RICHARD KAUFMAN,
Product Reviews by MICHAEL WEBER, and a regular column by MAX MAVEN.
Contributing editors will include EUGENE BURGER, MIKE CAVENEY, MAC
KING, and JIM STEINMEYER, among others.
The one year subscription price is $30 (In the U.S., slightly higher
elsewhere) and there are discounts for 2-year subscriptions. Current
subscribers to Inside Magic will roll over to the new magazine on an
issue per issue basis. During the charter subscription period, new
subscribers and current IM subscribers who sign up for an extra year
(or more) will get a copy of "Square One," a 55-page book that will not
be sold seperately.
Square One, A Collection of Tricks and Essays, includes work by EUGENE
BURGER, MIKE CAVENEY, PHIL GOLDSTEIN, KAZUYUKI HASE, RICHARD KAUFMAN,
KENICHI KUROKI, TOMO MAEDA, JIM STEINMEYER, MICHAEL WEBER, and TOMMY
WONDER. The compiler and editor of Square One is PHIL GOLDSTEIN. I
believe that only one item in the book has been previously published
(perhaps Max can verify this) and full credit is given for that one, "A
preliminary version of the Tommy Wonder essay appeared on the MAGIC!
computer BBS."
I've had a chance to glimpse the book and it looks good - something for
everyone, close-up to stage illusion.
Further information can be obtained from Stan Allen, Publisher/Editor,
M A G I C, 4067 Hardwick, Suite 322-A, Lakewood, Ca. 90712. And I'm
sure that it can also be obtained here on MAGIC! by leaving a message
for PATRICE MOORE.

longer is devoted to that niche and is now going head to head in
competition with Genii. If I'm right and the material is no longer
geared toward the working pro I would be interested in subscribing.
Am I right in assuming the new "Magic" is for amateurs like myself?

Well the program looks like that old Volkswagen you took part on the
garage floor. Bits and pieces all over and the task of putting it back
together is looking awesome. But good news on industrial strength
version.
.
Books to 32000, bring disk space and no sorts, some filters on
printouts, but more room than Max needs for extensive bibliography and
plenty for even the most ardent collector.
.
For Pete and the tabman, tricks to 1000 for sure and maybe 1500 with
little or no penalty beyond the expected for trying to handle that much
data. Sort and Stats take a lot longer, no surprise, but thats about
it.
.
Three level booking section.
level 1, data on the hiring organization, capacity 100 organizations
level 2, data on a specific booking, capacity 50 booking per org.
level 3, preshow setup information and post show analysis for each
booking.
Reports on this section are not set yet, if you or anyine else has
ideas now is the time while this thing is still somewhat flexible.
Books and tricks are locked in but booking is just starting to be
formed. I'll have it prety well locked in by the 4th and this section
is so complicated that I will not be changing it once I have made some
base commitments as to design, so all you pro's who wnat it different,
speak now or FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE.
.
Price is also not set yet, twill depend on how much more work I put
into this beast, any ideas on what you guy's think its worth?

Re: PERF. RIGHTS
You make several good points, and I agree about the problems of trying
to make copyright law the end all for this type of work. After all in
most cases the purpose of purchasing an effect is to perform it, even
if it is just for friends or at a club meeting (insignificant though
that may be)
I have no problem with a performer reserving first right of performance
for himself, such as at a trade show it should be the owner of the
rights to an effect that has the right to perform it over someone else
working the same show who has merely bought the use of the rights.
But I see little to be gained by trying to prohibit someone from
performing when it is not encroaching on the originators rights. As
long as the performer has the rights to use the effect. I can see no
reason to sell an effect without the rights to perform it, other than
to make a fast buck and create controversy.
Where I see the real probelm is in those who "rip-off" the
creations of others for their own gain. This would include those who
copy illusions (a knock off of the "origami" illusion was recently at
a club auction), as well as those who simply copy and market someone
elses effect. This includes both dealers and fellow magi. I know there
are very few completely new effects, but to just use dueces instead
of aces does not make a new 4 card trick. The method, patter, routine,
sequence of moves, etc must also be different
I think the audience's perception of the effect is a key element in
whether it is new or not. With the amount of"improvement" many effects are
marketed with, and the lack of credit often given (not to mention
money) to the originators, I can understand why the creative minds of
the Cervon's and Weber's, et al are concerned about their work.
In magic as in so many other arts, one must produce (or publish) or
or die. Yet to do so immediately invites loss of material and control.
The problem is not with those who are trying to protect their
rights, however awkwardly or inadequately. Rather I think it is with
those who do not care about those rights. For them all the wording in
the world will do no good. Locks are made to keep honest people honest,
and so it is with copyright laws. But the people who are penalized are
the honest ones more often than not.
While some improvement may be made by displaying the "rights" being
sold or licensed on the outside of a package or in advertising, I think
that a more uniform standard is needed. Perhaps this is something that
the MDA and IBM and SAM could jointly address. Although that would not
cover all the "bad apples" it would provide a large starting platform.
I dont think that IBM or SAM membership is necessary to be a
professional performer, or MDA to be a successful dealer, But all the good
ones that I know are in one of those groups. Perhaps it could mean
something more than the fact that someone has a few dollars to pay
dues. We as any other profession need to do a little self policing to
insure minimal ethical standards.
Wow theres enough ideas to fill a book. Comments ?

Re: LATEST TRIP
Well I'm back from another trip, this time to Washington, D.C. This
has been an exceptionally busy couple of months. When I look back I'm
amazed at how much magic I've been able to squeeze into these last few
business trips. Even on this short trip, I was able to get in some
magic.
First on the list (Monday June 17) was George Daily. George has the
best library I've ever seen. It's not the biggest but it's so well
organized and just so pretty to behold. We talked until pretty late,
mostly about books and magazines new and old. I picked up several
books from him including Paul Fleming's copy of Hoffmann's _Latest
Magic_ with Fleming's bookplate, signature, and notes. He'll be at the
IBM convention, stop by and tell him "Charlie sent me!"
The next night, Tabby and I got together with Bill Wells for dinner.
Our mission for the night was to find Scotty York. We'd gone to his
usual working place, the Fox Hole in Crystal City, but Scotty was not
there. He'd quit on his previous work night (some of the wait staff
had stolen $170 of tip Scotty had on the Ceiling from the "Card on the
Ceiling"). If the management is smart they'll get Scotty back.
Anyway, Bill solved that problem by simply driving us over to
Scotty's house. It's great to have friends in the know! Scotty was a
genuinely nice guy. He set up his table in the living room and
preceded to do several hours of material. All great stuff. His
presentation is excellent. He's obviously thought a lot about what he
is doing and work hardat it. Not only is he technically good, but
he's exceptionally entertaining. We even got a quick chance to see his
library and workshop area. I could have stayed in there all evening!
I think we all had a great time: Tabby and I enjoying the
performance; Bill providing some insightful comments and stories; and
Scotty performing and sharing some of his thoughts and tips.
On Thursday, I got to go over to Darwin Ortiz's place. My good
friend, Tom Gaudette had told me to give him a call. Darwin showed me
some great moves and helped me with my techniques (despite several
previous attempts which only left me with "severe" little finger
cramps, I can know do the Pinky Count although it still needs some
practice). We also discussed books as Darwin has a nice library of
magic and, of course, gambling. He also has some fantastic gaffed
gambling equipment. He showed me several gaffed shoes which were
beautifully made. He also had dice switching cups and tons of dice.
Perhaps the neatest thing he showed me was a juiced deck. I couldn't
find anything despite trying everything I'd heard about juice decks.
I squinted. I had my eyes all out of focus. Nothing. But as he
showed me, the cards were definitely marked!
We also spent quite a bit of time discussing Erdnase and the new
books on Erdnase. His book actually went to the printer before he'd
had a chance to see the finished Busby publication. He doesn't agree
that Milton Franklin Andrews was Erdnase and has some of his reasoning
in his book. Darwin's book is an annotated version of Erdnase with
both historical and technical notes. I won't say too many great things
about it as H&R is selling it. (Small plug: we have both Darwin's
_Annotated Erdnase_ $38.50 and Busby's _The Man Who Was Erdnase_ $39.95
or both for $70 - make up your own mind!) One good thing about
Darwin's book is that it includes the original Gardner article and the
complete text of some of the letters from Pratt. Anyway it's good to
see all the Erdnase material.
Oh Darwin will also be at the IBM convention lecturing. He said
he's going to cover some of the Erdnase material. I highly recommend
it as he can do the stuff - false deals, palming, false shuffles, etc.
Plus he has some very good insights in general.
Well that's about it except for my trip back which was a nightmare
- trip that should have taken 5 hours took over 12, more than 3 of
which I spent in 4 different lines. As Pete would say
AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!
Lots of catching up - more later.

Re: WINNERS
Just got the notes together regarding the Contest Winners at the
recent PCAM91 "Share the Magic" Convention.
Contests, as they have been for many, many years here in the
West are produced under the capable direction of longtime
magician and friend, John Morton.
The results are as follows (in various categories as noted)
and only the first place winners are reported here.
-
Juvenile: Zoli Torkos
Junior: Rigo Torkos
Comedy: Great Granzini
Platform: Roy Zimmerman
Close Up: Phil Ackerly
Novel Presentation: Farquhar & Felicity
Stage Act: Farquhar & Felicity
Showmanship: Farquhar & Felicity
Best Assistant: Felicity
Grand Prix: (NOT AWARDED)
-
As I reporter earlier, I didn't think the level of
competition was that high, although I totally agree with the
awards, and yes I agree no one reached the Gold Medal class. Its
the old story, "Who did you beat!"
However, I do believe in contests and think they are a
valuable part of conventions and wish there was a structure for
regional runoffs and ways to get the acts that deserve to enter
the major competitions, but can't afford the travel to make it,
sponsored by their local wins -- much like the Soap Box Derby.
And, with 140 entries in the FISM competition... I will be
in heaven!

Re: TAMARIZ'S THEORY
Max recently mentioned, in his conversation of the "Too Perfect
Theory", Tamariz's "Theory of False Solutions" from his book. While I
have the utmost respect for Tamariz and think the book is great, I've
always had a problem with the theory. According to the theory, you
construct tricks so that all possible solutions that a spectator might
come up wiht have been considered and somehow "blocked", if you will.
In this way, any solution a spectator starts to believe has a hole in
it and thus in the end the spectator, according to the theory, is left
with no choice but to believe that the trick was accomplished by real
magic. Tamariz has you go way out of your way to put these false clues
in to lead spectators down wrong paths. My problem with this is that
on numerous occasions, I've had spectators tell me that they know how
I or some other magician did his trick and then proceed to tell me a
solution that just wouldn't work. Not only wouldn't it work but the
solution isn't logical in light of how the trick was presented. In
other words, they've ignored one or more of these false clues. Some
spectators what to figure it out so bad that they jump on the first
semi-sensible solution they come up with despite the fact that you
could point to some minor point they missed or ignored that would cause
their reasoning to fall apart. They are basically looking for a
solution, right or wrong, so that they won't have to believe "the
magic."

Re: TAMARIZ'S THEORY
Charlie...
I think the audience member mentality of which you speak is of a small
minority. Tamariz's "Theory of False Solutions" is, to me, truly
profound and designed to "bring in" all but those few audience members
who would shrug their shoulders even if you managed to transform the
person seated next to them into a 300-pound jelly doughnut! There are
almost always going to be those who will tell their friends that you
performed that killer matrix with the aid of strings and mirrors. I
don't think one should structure his or her act to please the
occasional "derrier vent."
Of course, no one theory is universally applicable. If we must speak
generally, however, Tamariz's approach is one of the foundations of his
miraculous work. I've seen him get extraordinary results with it, I've
seen others get mediocre results without it and I've experienced a
direct correlation between more powerful results in my own work and my
humble but sincere efforts to apply the principles outlined in "The
Five Points of Magic."
Certainly, few would argue that Tamariz is one of the greatest living
magicians...and some would only argue with my qualification, "one of."
The "Theory of False Solutions" and his thorough and consistent
application of it is arguably one of the main sources of his magical
power.
'Wayne.

Re: TAMARIZ'S THEORY
The Tamariz theory is not new; Juan is perhaps the first to formalize
it. As I previously commented, it is by no means universally
applicable, but in its proper use it is designed specifically to
respond to the very problem you describe -- the spectator who, for
whatever reason, chooses to approach magic as a puzzle which must be
solved.
The key point is not simply that the spectator is led down an incorrect
path, but that when the path suddenly dissolves (or, if you will, when
the sprinklers are turned on) there is a sudden "disconnect" which in
a sense forces the spectator to abandon the solution-seeking approach,
and redefine the perceived situation as other than solution-oriented.
It is a delicate theory to put into practice, but it has its merits.

Re: PERF. RIGHTS
How do you dicuss the idea that "the creator of a work ought to have the
right to decide the conditions under which it is distributed," without
jumping into the copyright area? By going into the ethics of it, which
I submit are even more unenforceable than copyright law? Are you, by
suggesting that it would be helpful to avoid copyright law discussion,
implying that there really is no protection under these laws?
I just don't know how you discuss an intellectual property issue,
without discussing intellectual property law. Sure, it's basically an
ethical issue, but that's what laws are supposed to be based on. If
there's no copyright issue here, let's define that, and look atother
ways of offering the creator protection. And if what Weber is doing is
not only unreasonable in the opinion of some, but not within the
allowable bounds of the law, then I think people should know that as
well -- specifically so that they don't feel their creations are
protected, when in fact they may not be.

Re: TAMARIZ'S THEORY
Sometimes I think that spectators who propound weird theories are
hoping that you will, in turn, "spill the beans."
Last weekend I had a man come up to me after a show and tell me that he
was always unhappy when he found out how simple something in magic was.
He mentioned levitations as an example and how dissapointed he was to
discover that it was done with HUGE MAGNETS in the floor and above the
stage and that the subject wore metal bracelets. I didn't point out to
him that it was impossible, nor did I mention that even if it were
possible the slightest move on the part of the subject would cause them
to either crash to the floor or hit the roof with stunning force.
After all, he also told me he was a science teacher!
Is it really possible to eliminate ALL possible "theories?"

(I do not pretend to be a lawyer, nor do I offer or dispense legal
advice). So far as I, a legal layman, know, you are perfectly free to
enter into any binding arbitration agreement that you wish. It is done
in business all the time - as a matter of fact, it is a standard part
of my contracts. Certainly, it would be possible for someone to still
challenge the outcome and to proceed with a civil suit, but they would
be likely to be on weaker ground. I think that a board of magicians
really could be made workable to hear magician's disputes.

I may be pushing back the envelope a bit here, but I want to bare
my soul and thus do not want to censor what I write for fear of
offending our more sensitive members.
'Nuff said. Remember, you've been warned.
I'm sick and tired of doing everybody else's stuff. I take a
personal offense at being considered a "hanger", a semi-pro, a
duffer, a patzer, a nebbish. It pisses me off to no end. The
taste of bile is bitter indeed! If I were to spit right now, I
could burn a hole through Annemann's proverbial five-foot shelf.
Not that it would be any great loss, mind you. Seventy-five percent
of my library is crap. Hell, eighty percent of the Castle library
is ca-ca. I give 'em the extra five percent 'cause they've got
waaaay more books and videos than I gots.
I ask you, are they libraries, or cemetaries? If magic is
supposed to be a "living" art, where th' hell did all these
skeletons come from?
I don't know exactly why the apple fell out of the tree and
conked me on the noggin' bringing to life this sudden realization;
perhaps mid-life crisis, perhaps 39 years of guilt, hubris, and
once too often palming OUTTA the collection plate. Perhaps the
hoochee-coochee girls of fate have done gone and golden-showered me,
Boss...
"Oooh! Have you seen so-and-so's new book? That stuff-it-in-the-
thumb-tip-bill-switch is too cool! And what about that new
handling of Cervon's version of Goldstein's extension of the
Jenning's variation of the Professor's handling of Hofzinser's
selected card revealed ploy? And I'm sooo glad they included
the patter and presentation tips. Why, I'd be lost without 'em!
I've got that reverse-imp-shuffle move down pat now, after THREE
hours of practice. I demo'd it at my local club meeting, and
everyone said it was the nicest move they'd ever seen! They also
said my presentation really added to the effect. I had the book
photocopied and made into 3 x 5 cue cards to help me learn the
patter..."
Deja vu? Ipecac time, no?
Hell, I'm as guilty of this grave robbery as anyone. In fact, I'd
venture to guess that at one time or another in our careers,
we've ALL been caught with our hand in the cookie jar. No great
sin in that, we had to start somewhere. Hiding under drawn-up
blankets late at night, flashlights illuminating the wonderous
pages of Hugard and Braue's, The Royal Road To Card Magic, or
perhaps a back-pocket-creased issue of Annemann's Jinx.
Studiously silent lips mouthing the words of mystery, still hands
muscle-memorying Kelly's bottom placement upon a real invisible deck.
Time passes. In the interim, something goes terribly wrong! The
Pros sound the alarm. "The Art is dead", they cry. "Too many
bad am-a-turz!"
Want to know why? Too much is written. Plain and simple.
Books detailing every single nuance of presentaton Books that
codify and document each lick and swindle, making it extremely
easy for the bumbling hordes of hydrocephalic Saturday savants like
me to think that three hours of practice and rote memorization will
take the place of a lifetime of performance. Ah yes, pablum for
the Common Man. And these arcane secrets are cast forth like
bread unto the waters of the ignorant masses and yet the cry goes
up when Iggy Magi does the stuff, and does it poorly? Who's
kidding who here? One hand is actively writing a book of tricks,
while at the same time the other us slapping us silly for actually
having the gall to attempt to DO those very same tricks. Well,
what IS the sound of one hand slapping?
Why, if it isn't fitting and proper to do someone else's old stuff,
print these routines? Maven intimates that it isn't for the
money. What then, I ask you, for the love of the art? Or is it for
the DETRIMENT of it? Is having a routine in print the ultimate in
ego gratification or is it instead, a sublime insult to the craft?
In this case, maybe those neophytes who study the past ARE destined
to repeat it.
No wonder poor Iggy butchers your stuff. He's been masterfully
set-up to fail. He does everything he's been told him to do. He's
learned all the lines, mastered all the moves. And he takes one
step on stage and shatters like a glass goblin. Some magician!
Ah, but thankfully there's a new book coming out next week.
Maybe the tricks in this one will be better?
But will a new version of the Ambitious Card routine really help
Iggy out? Another dove production? A fancy Harbin illusion?
Nah. You know it. But does Iggy know it? Sadly, no.
So what does Iggy need? Let's return to the graveyard for a minute
and take a look around. Remember that 75% crap figure? Over here.
It starts somewhere around Abbott and continues on to Zarrow or
thereabouts. Hard-core magic. The Kama Sutra of conjuring. Like
absinthe, very addicting--and to Iggy and his ilk, also very
deadly. Iggy Magi doesn't need another Baker's Dozen. He don't
need 67 ways to palm a card. What good does it do him to be
shown the complete explanation of Dingle/Ammar Roll-over Aces?
He's so far up the creek at the moment that it'll take him years
to drift back down. When he finally does float by, he's gonna need
your help. Lots of it. Kick him in the ass if needs be, but at
least get him headed in the right direction!
How? More theory, less tricks. You don't give a three-year-old
Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and expect 'em to read and
understand it. Gotta teach 'em the alphabet first. Tiny steps for
tiny tots, you know. And so it is the same for the Iggys of the
magic world. Iggy needs to be taught technique. Have timing
slammed into him. Grooming, poise, voice, ACTING. Don't you dare
show him a card trick! Instead, write something that will do him
some good. Show him how to be creative, how to develop his own
stuff. You want to help magic? Sit down and write about YOU.
Tell us how to go about creating new routines. How to script.
How to develop a character. Where to look for new ideas. Perhaps
if Iggy is bombarded by these real works, some of it will rub off.
Magic may not survive unless you start writing about real magic.
Think about it.

Re: IGGY DOES MAGIC
I've thought about what effect the current output of books might have
on the field. For one thing, it seems we would have the ever growing
illusion of a performing middle class. All these people who no longer
considered themselves beginners, because they knew how LOTS of stuff
was done. But it would become difficult to graduate from that class,
because EVERYONE knew how lots of stuff was done. Knowing how MORE
stuff was done, unless it was lots and lots more, wouldn't do it.
To move to the next plateau, I think, you would have to learn WHY stuff
was done a certain way. Learning more about Who, What, When, Where,
and Why would be the lessons that hold the key to going beyond How to.

One other thought does occur to me. Imitation may not be the key to
success, but don't dismiss it out of hand. Unless you are a prodigy,
imitation plays an important role in the learning process. It's part
of what helps you figure out what works, and why. Now, how long you
want to spend on the learning step of imitation, that's another thing.
Stay too long, and you limit your growth. It's become a stopping
stone, not a stepping stone.

Re: MORE PCAM
Pete has reviewed the convention nicely but I would like to add
a few words about my experiences at P.C.A.M.
Conventions are a trip for me as I have never attended a magic
club meeting and am not a good magic schmoozer. I spent most of my
free time up in my room reading Eugene Burgers work.
I arrived just in time for Mr. Burgers spirit theatre. I am sure
this performance was very disappointing to some magicians, thats
how good it was. I was in awe.
I really felt that the Friday gala show was pretty weak over
all. The Watson act and over long tribute to Moi-Yo Miller
contributed to this, but the weakness of the closing act killed it
in my opinion.
Tom Ogdens pre-caffeine lecture was great. I found him funnier
at the lecture than he was in performance the night before.
The Saturday gala show was much stronger. Chuck Fayne cracks me
up. I learned from watching him and Stan Allen that comedy works
well delivered at a slow pace. I have a tendency to rush my comedy
work.
Jade was simply dazzling. She has such a likeable presence that
the audience really roots for her. She killed.
I confess that I was listening to Stephen Minch's lecture with my
eyes closed. I was too tired but I felt an obligation to myself to
attend as well as to the lecturer for doing a non-trick lecture.
Among the highlights for myself was the Inside Magic Live. I would
like to see one every day of the convention. I must say that I
felt a great number of people were uncomfortable when the
controversy started roaring. It seems that many magicians want to
bury their heads in the sand instead of resolve issues. I believe
the path of least resistance is what is taking magic down the
wrong road.
Like so many others I resisted the urge to barge in on famous
people in show business whose work I respect. But I finally
cracked and approached a celebrity. I told Eva Gabor how much I
enjoyed her work in Green Acres. She was so sweet and what a
lovely accent. But she kept insisting that her name was Irene
something or other.

You make some interesting points -- although you sound as though you've
been reading too much Harlan Ellison -- I would, however, observe that
having to wade through the crap is one way of weeding out the less than
dedicated. Also, given the volume of magic in print, that means there
is still a hell of a lot of good material that never gets performed.
Also, it is necessary to know what's been done to keep from
re-inventing the wheel. Santayana said that those who do not remember
history are condemned to repeat it -- I say that magicians who DO
remember history can't f***ing wait to repeat it! One reason to find
out what the greats of the past did...
...is so that you can do something different.

Re: RDMAGIC TRICK
I just completed the trick part of RDMAGIC (AKA IMP). You create
a file DUMMY.MSG, which contains the prediction part. e.g.
"By the way the card your friend picked is the 7 of diamonds".
.
As you use RDMAGIC to move through threads using the right arrow,
all you have to do is hit the + (next to the right-arrow) and the
next msg will be displayed with DUMMY.MSG appended to it.
.
You could force a card and after failing to find it, go to the
computer and start reading msgs, when you come upon a thread which
has a forward pointer you can hit -> to bring it up, the next msg
can be retrieved using + right next to the ->, it looks the same.
The next msg is displayed with the contents of DUMMY.MSG added to the
end. I'll bring a copy to IBM for fun.

Steve... GREAT VIEWPOINT on the PCAM. There are funny levels of
participation at conventions. There are guys that show up, fo to
all the scheduled events and go to bed. Then there are those that
go to most of the events, but hang out in "select" groups (usually
thier PEERS ie: the GOOD card guys together, the FUNNY guys
together, the MENTALISTS together -- and that is where the creative
juices bubble and boil and they show their NEW stuff to one another.

audience became EXTREMELY VOCAL, shouting, and just when it began
to get REALLY interesting -- and before anything was really
resolved -- WE RAN OUT OF TIME!

The main thing you need to know... they ain't cheap. Don't get
trapped (LIKE I HAVE SEVERAL TIMES) by thinking the little units
that you tune an FM receiver to will do it. Anything in the $400
to $500 range won't cut it either. You gotta figure at spending
around $1,000.00 buckaroos.
I am assuming this message is for Dennis Pierce, tho it is labeled
from David L. Regading my comment about the Janet Jackson headset
mike... unless you are doing a sketch or have a reason to have the
OBNOXIOUS mike visible like she does don't do it... it will detract
from what you are performing. If you really only want FREE HANDS,
there is nothing wrong with just having a clip on your body that
holds the stand mike. They almost all come off and can be made
into lavalier mikes. DON'T BUY ANY OF THE CHEAPO mike clips you see
sold by magic shops. Go to a large music store and buy the SHURE
BROS. clip. It is a chain around your neck with a holder combined
with a "tie clip" arrangement that hooks into your shirt. They have
a cople of versions. The one I have is barely noticeable. And after
a few moments the audience will forget you have the Mike hanging
on your chest. I at first thought I would have trouble with the
cable, as I move all over he place. But, only a few shows and I
not only learned to keep the cable inits place, but it was
automatic, and I never had trouble with it. It becomes second nature.

Yea, the "Too Perfect" line is all I ever hear when I work. And
Misdirection. I think that word is little understood. The best
case of BEING misdirected was seeing Blackstone (SR) at the finish
of "The Drum That Can't Be Beat" -- where he, centerstage, produced
a Live Donkey! No apparatus, just Blackstone, center stage with
an armload of silks.
The how? As the long silk streamers were pulled out of the drum,
which was elevated, center stage, the streamers were brought to
the sides of the stage by assistants. Then, JUST AS THE GIRL popped
out of the drum, the assistant at stage right went offstage and
covered the (medium size) donkey with silk, picked it up and just

Sorry to disagree, Pete, but it's exactly this sort of trick that leads
to a misunderstanding of misdirection. Yes indeed, it was a successful
application, but when you use this as an example of misdirection it
only leads people to think of misdirection as "making people look away"
-- and that's not what it's about.

Re: IGGY DOES MAGIC
Will Iggy really be interested in books on theory. He's been
conditioned to buy books than are loaded with 'new' tricks. You see
Iggy measures his magic ability by HOW MANY TRICKS HE CAN DO, not
how well he can do a few VERY WELL.
.
Someone mentioned that a 'pro' only does a few tricks VERY well,
while an amateur does A LOT OF TRICKS poorly. The 'pro' can do the
same thing over and over since he essentially has a brand new
audience with every performance.
.
Poor Iggy on the other hand has a captive audience of his family,
friends, magic club buddies, and business associates. He must
continually learn new tricks so that he doesn't bore them with
the same old stuff, he can bore them with new stuff.
.
Is it any wonder that Iggy buys every new book, everyone's lecture
notes, the latest whiz bang trick from the mail-order dealer. If he
is to continue in magic, WITHOUT trying to become a professional he
has no choice, but to continue this course, or seek new audiences
to do the 6-8 really dynamite effects he may be capable of.
.
Iggy isn't interested in theory, he is interested in learning more
tricks, new tricks, so that he can continue to entertain his limited
audience. It is laudable that you ask the 'pros' to write books
about theory and help Iggy towards the path of the true magi, the
question is WILL IGGY GO ALONG WITH THAT PATH ?
.
Unfortunately, history is against that happening. The entire
structure of the magic community is geared toward meeting the
NEEDS THAT IGGY HAS, which is to enjoy magic and entertain his
limited audience to the best of his ability - not everone has
the desire or ability to become a truly great magi.
.
Why not let Iggy enjoy his hobby and continue to support the
pros by buying all the latest greatest ?

Thanks for faxing the flyer. The billing is flattering, the text even

Also, the "rare appearance" might be expressed as "rare appearance at

a surprise to magicians in a couple of other countries...

Re: FUN??????????????
For the last several weeks there has been a great deal of discussion of
whats wrong with magic.
...too many books
...the wrong kind of books
...too many amateurs
...too many bad performers
...too low standards in clubs
...not enough theory
...too high and mighty attitude on the part of some pros
and i bet if I really tried I could find at least a couple of dozen
other things wrong with magic. So far I have refrained from commenting
on this idea, but tonite I thought I would give it a go..
.
What is wrong with magic is we have lost the fun of it. When I first
got involved with magic I went over to the American Magic Museum in
Marshall MI and spent a very interesting hour with Bob Lund (no
relation although my father is a Bob Lund as well). At the end of the
tour he told me something that has stuck with me so far. He commented
that too often magic is presented as a puzzle and not as a wonderful
mystery (almost childlike). Well it struck me that not only was this
a good idea for a performer presenting magic, but also a good idea for
anyone into magic as well. Right now I practice about an hour a nite
and read magic stuff for maybe another hour. I do this because I have
fun....I enjoy it.
.
I think for any of us if we loose that enjoyment it become a job. I
konw if I stop enjoying what I am doing the stuff will go into the
attic.
.
So here to fun, lift a brew to the poor club member who doesn't have
the God given talents of a Copperfield or an Ammar but who is having a
ball, wish him well, wish the part time pro well, wish the full time
pro well and have fun with it.

Bro. John Hamman. I've been using the thing in my shows ever since
Joe Berg sold me my first one back in '69. I'm not sure anyone is
currently manufacturing them. I've had to make several for myself for
lack of a source. The construction details can be found in Kaufman's

down and make one or perhaps some nice soul on this board might have
one they're not using...

Yo Tab,
It was a real kick. I can't compare it to other conventions
but I had a good time and learned much. Got a couple of
killer effects for the wine act. Nice water to wine effect. I
figure I'm safe cause it was done about 2000 years ago, was
published and is in the public domain. I don't know if I am
being blasphemous by performing this trick but it did wonders
for Jesus' career.
However if we fail to meet in person soon you will be meeting
me by video. You're at the top of the list for a copy of the
new act when it is completed.
I have taken the act three different ways in the last six
months but have finally found the niche I was searching for.
I hope to create a piece of theatre that is out of the
ordinary. Real moody atmospheric type thing. Even going to
experiment with performing a piece under candle light only.

Pete,
Something strange happened to your last message. Chopped in the
middle I believe. The famous Zig-Zag message.
It was great to see the same topics discussed that have been
tossed around here on MAGIC!. Shows me that this board is
really on the cutting edge of magic communications. Max Maven
was able to bring the discussion back in focus by pointing out
that this is their property and they can be as unreasonable as
they like. I say let the free market rule. If people will buy
their stuff with the conditions attached thats fine.
I would like to see some of these peripheral issues dealt with
and put to rest. Fascinating as the topic was I would have
benefitted more from a half hour discussion on performance
theory.
I would love to see a three day "No Tricks" convention with
none of the lecturers teaching new tricks. Gear it toward
professionals and price it high enough to cover the costs of
the lower attendance. I would gladly pay several hundred
dollars to attend. It could be a Reel Works convention,
dedicated to the few in magic who think. (Recognize that line?)
Another thought just hit me. Maybe the creative guys in magic
should be teaching people to create, not just selling them
creations. I would like to peek inside some of these cats'
heads and see how their minds work. I know how my creativity
blossoms, but it would sure be fascinating to know how it
works for others.

Tabman:
The guy who bought the Forks, bought it as a graduation present for
his High School son. The kid likes to party. So, he wants to have a
place for other kids to go. Kinda like a teenage nightclub. They want
to gut the upstairs and make it a big hall. However, the place is so
old and delapidated, it may not be feasible or cost-effective. Plus,
there are problems when dealing with the upstairs about meeting the
building codes.
Several magicians have contact the kid. I guess in an effort to make
him aware that they would be available!do magic if his plan doesn't
work.

Your problem, that in spite of all this people might still come up
with solutions is another matter. Many times the solution is wrong,
and sometimes they might even lie, that they know the secret! But
even in the case they believe their solution to be right, it is not
really important, because this will not happen during the effect but
after. This makes a big difference. When people find a solution,
either right or wrong, AFTER the effect, it does not matter all that
much. First of all they cannot be sure if their solution is a right
one but more important they have had the magic moment. They have
experienced the moment. We gave them the magic. What people do with

So Iggy needs to be kicked in the ass with more theory and less
tricks. He needs to be bombarded by the real works? But what to do
if Iggy runs to the shelter the very moment a little bomb is thrown?
Okay some Iggy's have come to realise that tricks alone does not
help them, they are on the right track, they will read the trick
books as sources of ideas and inspiration, NOT as sources of actual
tricks to do. This is how it should be. One can learn a tremendous
lot , especially from all the little nuances in the tricks, if one
reads the trick-books as sources of ideas and inspiration. There
lies their real value.
What amazes me from the people who realize it is not the tricks they
need, is the continuous cry "teach me the theory, tell me the real
works, tell me how to be creative, etc.". As if this information is
not available. Why complain, ALL there is available to help, has
been out in the open for ages. Why do they cry for more. Do they not
realize there is no more? Bombard people, with what, all the bombs
have already been thrown.
Throw them again and again? Not a bad idea. But one must also be
willing to stand in the open field so that one can be hit by these
bombs. We should not blame the writers of books that they do not hit
us, if we are hiding in a shelter.

Re: IBM - DAY 1
Whew! Here we are at IBM - Pete Biro, Tabman Crabb, Jerry Burton,
Coathanger Wilson, Gary Plants, David Luther, Harry Blackstone Jr., and
many, many more.
We closed down Tabman Hall (aka Hotel de Carlo, aka The Old
Pricipal's House) on Thursday night with a Bar-B-Que and that
famous Brunswick Stew - incredible!
The Stouffers Harbor Hotel is a big change from the Hotel de Carlo
with its library, magic room (table covered in casino felt, Tabman
can't get a suede hide big enough), Coole Springs (the natural
spring on the Tabman's property, site of the second hospital in the
United States), and private golf course.
The IBM convention started off yesterday morning with the
Preliminary Stage Competition in the Baltimore Ballroom. Tabman
is the stage manager. At 11 a.m. Ron London lectured, followed by
Fantasio. Pete will be supplying the list of Finalists for the
Stage Competition, but I know that it does include Leslie Au from
Hawaii (He and his wife Terri did an incredibly beautiful show, the
close of which includes placing a white cockatoo into a "Hindu
Cage," running in the traditional swords, a flash and they produce
a multi-colored mackaw! - simply gorgeous!), Jonnathan David Bass,
and a surprise performer - Vladimir Perevodchikov of the USSR!
Yes, in addition to magicians from Canada, Australia, New Zealand,
Bangladesh, India, France, Germany, etc., there is a three person
group from the Soviet Union - Vladimir Perevodchikov (1991 All-
Union "Magician Ring" competition Gold Prize Winner), Olga
Ovsyannikova, and one other person whose name I haven't caught.
Vladimir did a very beautiful show, using jumbo cards which would
stay together and come apart, fan, change, etc. It really captured
the audience's attention - not as visual or flashy as contemporary
US magic.
The Dealer Show has (my estimate) some 30 dealers including Howie
Schwarzman, Hank Lee, Joe Stevens, Collector's Workshop, and many
more. Will try to go thru it and describe it in more detail.
The Opening Gala, held in the Morris A Mechanic Theater, featured
Bob Sheets as Master of Ceremonies, Alan Nguyen (a young performer
with some nice oriental touches to his performance), Ralph Fowler
as The Senile Sorcerer (R), Jerry Rowan, Denny & Lee, and Kohl &
Company.
At 11 p.m. we had a MAGIC! Get Together with a chance for MAGIC!
members to meet and greet each other. It was in the program as an
open meeting and approximately 120 people showed up! The big
MAGIC! meeting is scheduled for this afternoon at 4:30 - hope we
fill the Baltimore Ballroom for that one!
Hey! I'm missing shows to get this story filed!

Yes, the mini-convention was really something. The audience for our
impromptu shows included "600 pounds of dog." The Tabman has six
of the most beautiful, most polite dogs I've ever seen - the smallest
weighs 75 pounds, the largest - a combination Labrador/Wimeraner
weighs in at about 118 pounds. The dogs particularly liked the
effects done with food.
We missed you - frankly, although next year's IBM won't be near
The Old Principal's House, I think we should figure a way to get

Fortunately, all at MAGIC! World Headquarters remained relatively

I didn't think the earthquake did any damage here but something odd did

Re: TOO PERFECT
Here's more food for thought for the "Too Perfect" theory
discussion. The point of this message is that tricks can be too
perfect and have undesirable results.
Rajah Raboid use to present an illusion called "Sawing a Man in
Halves" in which he brought out the top "living" half of the man for
the audience to see. The audience could not believe their eyes and all
panic broke out. The hysterical mob literally stampeded out of the
theater. The illusion had to be dropped because it created too much of
a commotion.
The illusion of the half man was so good because it was real. It
used the Eckhardt twins. Rob was a normal full length person, but
Johnny was only half there, the so-called "half boy". Utilizing the
twins, Raboid was able to create an illusion that was too good for the
audiences to handle.
For more information about this check the April 1962 issue of Genii
and I think Ricky Jay has something about Johnny Eck in his book.

Re: IBM - DAY 2
Wow!!! It's only the second day of the convention and if this
keeps up, I'm going to be out of superlatives.
You'll have to rely on the other reporters for the info prior to
4:30. I was working on magic, MAGIC! and IBM "stuff" until then
so I missed all the good stuff prior to that.
4:30 p.m. - The MAGIC! session - about 175 people in attendance.
We went over how to sign on to MAGIC! and answered lots of
questions. Copies of the _NEW_ PASSPORT TO MAGIC! were available -
40 pages on how to use MAGIC! functions. They were very well
received and, as a result, we collected a bit of cash for support
of MAGIC! (As soon as I return to LaLa Land, we'll announce their
availability - basically, we're asking a $12 contribution toward
the support of MAGIC!).
The session was followed by a short dinner break - pizza in the
fast food court connected to the hotel. The hotel - the Stouffer
Harbor is beautiful - a VERY GOOD choice for a magic convention
(data ports on every phone!).
8:00 p.m. - the "Stars of Magic Gala Show" in the Mechanic Theater.
This was a MAJOR KILLER. PETE BIRO put together an INCREDIBLE show
- "The Magic of the Ed Sullivan Show." The performers had all, at
one time or another, appeared on the Sullivan show. The MC was JAY
MARSHALL. Featured performers included KARRELL FOX (who thanked
us for the get well wishes that the info. on MAGIC! triggered - he
got cards and letters from all over the World), BILLY BISHOP, JOHN
SHIRLEY, ROGER RAY, FANTASIO, JOHN MOEHRING, and MARVIN ROY and
CAROL ROY as "MR. ELECTRIC."
Everyone was in high spirits for most of this one. Many had come
out of retirement for this one (Pete's feat in getting them to do
it was acknowledged) and were really delivering their best for the
show. Everyone was superb. In my opinion the absolute tops were
John Shirley doing his beautiful puppet work as well as balloon
work, Marvin and Carol Roy turning in an incredible performance,
and the absolute show stealer was Roger Ray. There were FOUR OR
FIVE STANDING OVATIONS DURING THE SHOW, it ended with the entire
audience on its feet CHEERING. Unbelievable! Stupendous!
After the show, DAVID LUTHER, BURTON THE BIZARRE, JADE, GARY
PLANTS, and I attended the midnight lecture by DARWIN ORTIZ.
Again, there aren't superlatives. Ortiz did the lecture he does
for casion managers. His card work is something that must be seen.
Burton, David, and I, along with BECKY BLANEY, retired to the bar
where we harrassed waitresses and patrons while DAVID WILLIAMSON
walked someone on all fours thru the bar using a tie as a leash,
yelling "Heel, Dog!"
The last of the evening, about 2 a.m. found GARY PLANTS performing
in the lobby for JAMES LEWIS and David Williamson. Gary does some
beautiful card work - dealing tops, seconds, and bottoms
indetectibly from the same grip.
Like I said, what a day! Now to see what the MAGIC! messages look
like - I hear that Pete left something to harrass me...

Re: TOO PERFECT
The story is fun, but apparently not true. Reportedly, the act got a
strong reaction, but not to the point of panic. Rather, it played with
success for a week or two, and then ended because Johnny Eck wanted a
larger cut, as he could make a better wage working solo on the carny
circuit. Over time, the fact that the act had lasted only briefly
evolved into the "too strong for the public" anecdote.
By the way, Raboid's presentation was to proclaim that he would do
the classic "sawing" illusion using a volunteer from the audience. The
fully-formed twin would come up from the crowd. At the conclusion of
the sawing, the guy would begin to climb out of the box, but a switch
had been made, and it was now Johnny Eck perched on the shoulders of a
dwarf wearing a normal-sized pair of pants. Suddenly, the guy would
split in two -- the legs running off to one wing, while the top half
bounded off in the opposite direction on its hands.
You can see Johnny Eck, bounding thusly, in Tod Browning's movie
(ca. 1931), "Freaks." By the way, Eck died only this past year. His
carny act consisted of him perched on a table, often performing
close-up magic. He retired to the east coast (Baltimore, I believe),
and spent the rest of his life doing paintings on window screens.

Several months ago, someone posted on MAGIC, what I assume is an old
and standard "Do as I do" effect.
The magician and spectator each have 4 cards, with the spectator doing
what the magi does - turn card over and put on bottom, etc etc.
After all is done, magi does Elmsley showing all cards the same way,
while the spectator has one card the wrong way.
The moves are done again without the magi resetting.
Would appreciate getting the moves. Last day in the office is Tues

Re: HELP
Marvin,
I uploaded a paraphrase of "Vernon's Variant" during a discussion
of the Elmsley count. I can't remember the message # so I'm
reloading the description for you. To avoid having a 90+ year old
man chasing you for "using" his routine, I suggest you invest in
"Ultimate Card Secrets" by Ganson where it was published.
(NOTE: Lesson 1 referred to "Twisting the Aces" from "More inner
Secrets", also from Vernon and published by Ganson.)
VERNON'S VARIANT
I've had excellent response with what I would recommend as Lesson
Two, (only after Lesson one is 100% PERFECT!) also from Vernon's
Book (Ultimate Card Secrets). It includes audience participation
(as many as are willing), has built in misdirection, and
emphasizes the importance of rythym in the count.
It goes something like this:
Offer to "teach" everyone a trick (this is my third trick in a
set). Hand four cards to each participant and keep four for
yourself.
Emphasize that the values don't matter, just that they are all
facing the same way (face down).
"Neatness counts!" (excuse for keeping packet squared during the
counts).
"Turn the first card over and place it on the bottom."
"Take the next card and just place it on the bottom."
"Turn the packet over."
"Take the bottom card, turn it over and put it back on the
bottom, turn the top card over and place it back on top."
This sets you up for an Elmsley count (third card face up) and
confuses the daylights out of the others. If done right, they
don't know which way is up!
The odd Elmsley fingertip grip from Vernon is explained by trying
to be "open and fair, with no funny moves" as if you don't even
want to handle them in the first place.
Continue: " Count your cards, you should have one, two, three,
four face down cards." this sets the stage for your Elmsley,
timed to the spoken count while they are counting their own, only
casually observing yours. ( the built in misdirection is GREAT!)
Of course they must have "messed up somewhere, lets's try again."
Don't change the position of your cards! After the count, you
should have face up card on bottom.
Have them straighten their cards and repeat the sequence SLOWLY
and CAREFULLY emphasizing the fairness.
On the counting sequence, while they're watching you even more,
their cards will still have one face up while yours are ALL
(legitimately) face down!
Repeat as necessary! (but not too long please!)
This gets everyone involved and you can have a lot of fun with
it.
There are many variations that can be thrown in. I've been shown
some by Geno Munari and Mike Skinner. Steve Dacri's video has a
gaffed version using a double backer that demonstrates the
audience involvement quite well.
Hope this helps!
David (the other one)

Double lift the top two cards (as one) and turn face up, placing (them)
face up on the bottom. Continue as per normal routine. At the end,
all your cards will be face down.

...although, after some thought, and another look at that leaking
junkheap...the word asinine also leaps to mind. In fact, that deformed
pile of scrapmetal brings many words to mind...most of them unsuitable
for display in this forum...just as that eyesore is unsuitable for
display at the Castle entrance.

Re: IBM - DAY 3
As my mind melts into the sunset it gets harder and harder to do
my convention report. Lack of sleep, too much magic. Let's see...
I started yesterday by missing the Petrick Lecture and the John
Calvert Remembers Session. Lot's of things goin' on. Caught the
afternoon Comedy Club Show.
Very good show - RON LONDON, BOB SHEETS, DAVID WILLIAMSON, and
SYLVESTER THE JESTER. Sheets did a repeating poker hand bit with
jumbo cards that was very good. Let the audience member have all
the options and still kept winning. His laugh is infectious. He
looks at his cards, he laughs; soon the whole audience has the cue.
David Williamson did a lot of crazy/funny bits - made the audience
wild - scalped a kid (9 year old), removed his brain and found a
silk in it - did an underwear exchange between two kids - one about
9 and the other about 3. Wild.
And the wildness had just started - then came Sylvester the Jester.
This guy is something else! The audience wasn't sure what to do -
most of what they did was stunned disbelief. I suspect that some
were thinking they ought to beat a hasty exit before he killed
their wives and children. The guy produces a "25-pound" ANVIL and
beats on it with a produced sledgehammer; he smashes his head with
a frying pan ("This is your brain, this is drugs, this is your
brain on drugs..." - SMASH!). His manipulations are EXCELLENT.
He is also a one-man sound and light show - effects such as steam
coming out of his ears, loud bangs when he hits his head with a
hammer - the guy is wired! Incredible! Everyone in this show did
a great job.
Then it was on to the Gold Medal Competition & Show. No gold was
given in the stage competition this year. Gold Cups were given in
the close-up competition, but we'll have to get the names from Biro
- I blanked. The 1st Prize in the Stage did go to CHAPEK, 2nd to
LES and TERRI AU, and a special award to the Soviet performer.
The finals were great - all the contestants did a good job. Really
good show as well as a contest.
MC KARREL FOX, one of my favorites, did a lot of incredible bits.
He is, in my opinion, the perfect MC.
Following the Stage Competition, BECKY BLANEY and JADE did their
shows. These two are great! Becky did her club act (sanitized a
bit for the Baltimore stage) and had the audience in the palm of
her hand. She is a funny, funny lady. Jade did what Jade does
best - project. It is really amazing to watch this petite lady win
the audience thru sheer presence and charisma. When she is at the
top of her form, as she was last night, she could probably do the
whole act without props and the audience wouldn't either notice or
care. Beautiful.
Then it was down to the lounge where PETE BIRO, TABBY CRABB, CAROL
ROY, DAVE WILLIAMSON, BOB SHEETS, BECKY BLANEY, JADE, etc., etc.
all wandered in, out, and about, eating pizza and crabmeat
quesadillas.
Another 4 a.m. fall into bed. Today I'm just hangin' out until the
banquet and the Grand Finale Gala. Don't know when that report
will make it to your screen - gottta give the 'puter back to BILL
WELLS. Don't know how MAGIC! would have survived without him.

Re: BERG'S MAGIC STUDIO
The main convention to be at in 1992 is going to be the MUSIC CITY
CONCLAVE, January 10, 11, 12th in NASHVILLE. It's the TABMAN USA
Convention - he's setting it up so that one can arrive late on
Friday and be there for the whole thing - a little careful plane
planning and you can take only Friday for travel and be at the
whole thing. Already booked - MAX MAVEN, JOHNNY ACE PALMER, PETE
BIRO, RAY MERTZ, RICHARD HATCH, GENO MUNARI and JIM SISTI. Should
be great.
IBM will be in ST. LOUIS, but I don't have the dates in front of
me. Check GENII or INSIDE MAGIC.

Lot's of discussion here about your sword/card in the closet bit.
Some say it was a great effect, some say "Well, yeah, but anyone
could have done it, you just have to know how to make an earth-
quake." At any rate, I guess that particular joker is keeping his
ear to the ground.

Re: REGARDS
As you don't have a Japanese spell-checker, allow me to help:
"Onasaka" should be Onosaka.
"Arigado" should be Arigato.
"Goziamas" should be Gozaimasu.
Other than that, perfect.

Re: CONVENTIONS
I would like to hear from anyone and everyone who has an opinion on
this. I like to learn magic, do magic, talk magic, meet magicians,
etc. In other words I would like to go to a magic convention. If any
of you were me and you could only go to one magic convention in 1992,
would you choose the Music City Conclave, the IBM convention, the
Desert Seminar, PCAM, or ???
I would like as many opinions and reasons why as possible... THANKS!

There's no way I can make it to Colon this year.
My dear friend, Dave Madden, will be making his only live, on-stage
appearance of the year in Colon. Dave has starred in four television
series, nightclubs, plays, countless TV commercials and, these days, is
content to be merely a legendary Hollywood voice-over artist.
You're in for a rare treat.

will get another chance to get together soon. Thank Tabby for me for
