Re: CONTESTS

Why will paying judges insure competence? I wholeheartedly agree
that better judges are part of the solution to better results for
contests but I fail to see how paying them is necessarily going to
achieve that objective.
A possible approach might be to separate the selector of the judges
from the poor soul who must organize the contests. With more time to
devote to the selection, one might be able to identify better people.
Then we could always take the approach we utilize for the DMS and let
the audience vote.

Re: RESPONSES TO LOST MESSAGE

Let me see if I can pick up on some of the messages that got
lost...
#8586 - re the Crayborgue defense system...
It being awhile since I had a Tachyon, I had nelected to consider
their rate of movement in postulating my theory.
I am sure El Tabbo will welcome any additions to the National
Library of Crayborgue.
#8590 - re Swiss mementos
Most interesting! I look forward to a public exhibition of the
Swiss memorabilia someday. I would think the "Rockwatch" would
be just the thing to wear while being a selected spectator in a
pickpocket act. Too bad you didn't go to FISM and look up some
of your old business associates.
#8591 - re the Lichtman contributions to software
I am sincerely impresed! Such acceptance of your efforts must be
very rewarding to you.
I am currently attempting to upgrade myself on the newities of
Lotus 1-2-3 version 2.3 which I just purchased. You probably are
a version 3 power user. I am thus far quite favorably impressed
with version 2.3 and the enhancement in the printing
capabilities. This should improve my reporting of I.B.M.
finances considerably.
#8593 - re the good service of the Stouffer's Staff
I would agree that the Stouffer's hotel staff was super. In
fact, that was one of if not the best hotel staffs in my 14 years
of being involved in I.B.M. conventions. I knew the site would
be favorably accepted. It was similar to our 1984 Norfolk site
only twice better. Salt Lake City should be low key and
friendly. Families can visit the natural wonders of the area.
We should have a nice "down to earth" atmosphere.

Re: RESPONSES

I will try to lump some of the message responses that got lost in
the great message base quake of '91...
#8595 - re Johnny Gaughan
Johnny is indeed a gentleman and one of those few people that
make Magic a worthwhile endeavor. He travels to this area more
often than you might expect.
#8598 - re CEMK
Thank you. I also look forward next year to both I.B.M. and DMS.
Buffalo (and I now assume Rochester) were indeed great fun when I
used to go. However, I think I will live with my memories for
awhile longer before returning to the area for a magic
convention. In the meanwhile, I will anticipate the on-the-spot
reports of Tabman on the scene.
#8599 - re jobs at conventions for the Tabman
Le me know anytime you want to try any other areas. Presently
trying to get a thinktank type weekend set up for a few key
people to brainstorm where we are and where we are going with
magic conventions.
#8600 - re the aura of Biro
So whatdaya think the suit and tie did to his aura? I think it
was undiminished in brillance, but I did hear him complaining
about it being stiff and sore the rest of the week.
#8601 - re wives and First Virginia Families
I am truly impressed. A wife that goes out looking for magic
goodies for you and fresh grown farm goodies! Life should be so
good for us all!
Man, your folks must REALLY have been craved on that statue.
Which of the three boats were they on?
#8604 - CMEK; #8605 - LOC
I have heard nothing but excellent reports from all who have
attended over the years....including the years in which they had
the "exotic" dancer. Keith has given up on trying to get me to
attend after trying hard the first two or three years. It used
to conflict with the I.B.M. board meetings.
I look forward to the holler. BTW...speaking of things you have
for me...did you intend to leave that photo in the envelope with
the copy of "Toast to VMI"? It is of a most strange visage with
a strange pattern of baldness. I thought you might have left it
there to ward off evil spirits...sure scared the hell outa me!
Let me know if you need it back.

Re: TV

Message #8638 and your question if the Roggin's Heroes show had
been viewed from the viewpoint of the magician...
I am not quite sure I understand what you mean. I tried to
assume something of a magic viewpoint in expressing concern over
exposure of tricks. However, I would hope that magicians
submitting tapes would also exercise some judgement in not
sending tricks gone wrong which also expose the trick. Insofar
as how the magician's image is impacted, again I would assume the
submitters would be able to display some judgement on what they
submit. However, I would also think that magic, like most all
other disciplines, should be able to laugh at itself.
I might also mention that I told Dick Kohlhaffer (Kohl and
Company) about this show since his act is perfect for such a
presentation.

CENTERFORCE is teh effort to which I referred. I highly

description is most interesting. I will now attempt to find
PROBABILITY PAD in one of the old book dealerships that I

Re: TV TAPES

#8614 - re what will Roggin's Heroes pay?
I have no idea what Roggin's Heroes intends to pay for tapes but
I do recall they said they will pay. My guess would be that they
would pay magicians whatever they pay other submitters for tapes.
My only role in this is to act as a bearer of the message. I had
hoped it might bring some magician some money and some visibility
that could produce future success. I would assume that any who
would submit a tape would have the good sense to first negotiate
an acceptable arrangement regarding payment. If the payment
isn't suitable then they shouldn't submit the tape. At any rate,
I have passed the message on in a number of directions and am now
out of the picture. Give 'em a call and see what they are
willing to pay.

Re: CONTESTS

Mike - a few comments on contests and your article on the I.B.M.
close up contest.
I am quite sympathetic to your concerns. However, a contest is
hardy a normal setting. There is little difference between stage
and close up contests in that many perform material designed for
the contest that a working performer might not perform. However,
neither the I.B.M. stage or close up contest require practicality
as a condition of winning. Nor have any of the contests
presented at the Desert Magic Seminar. That is not to say that
such a condition might not be worth considering, but only that it
is not a present condition or standard. The I.B.M. Gold Cups and
the I.B.M. Gold Medal are presented for Excellence in the
Performance of Close Up Magic and Stage Magic respectively.
There are no other conditions. Each year the judges make a
decision if they feel any performance should be awarded the Cups
and the medal. They don't tally up points or check off a list.
It is a very subjective thing. However, a judge is called that
because they are supposed to exercise judgement and that is in
itself a very subjective process. A contest will never reflect
anything but a snapshot of the conditions of the moment. One act
might win one day and fail miserably the next.
I personally dislike contests very much. I dislike competition
of that sort. However, I was on a committee of one in the late
1970's to create a world class award for the I.B.M. that would
offer the potential for development into an award of the same or
higher standing as the FISM Grand Prix and the British Ring
Shield. The present I.B.M. Gold Medal is the result of about two
years of discussions with the Board of Trustees. It was first
offered in 1980 at the Evanville Convention and was won by Lance
Burton. As Max has pointed out, there were no contests or awards
of any note in the USA until that time. Quickly, the DMS
followed with the Loin's Head Awards and big cash prizes and
others followed suit. The purpose was to stimulate excellence in
performance of magic and to attempt to bring American stage
performance up to the level that European stage performer were
viewed as holding at that time. I believe we may have made some
progress towards that purpose. Following the apparent success of
the Gold Medal, I then presented the concept of the Gold Cups
Award for Close Up to the Board. They were first offered and won
in 1981 by a young man named David Williamson.
You might be interested to know that my original idea was to hold
the preliminary selection almost as an audition with no staging,
lights or sound. A bare room with only the judges. However, the
attendees at the Evanville convention were so put out at not
being able to witness the preliminary performances that I had to
abandon the idea and have the prelims on a stage with full
audience. I didn't want the audience to see the acts twice, I
should have known magicians don't seem to care.
Personally, I feel the major weakness with most contests
(including the I.B.M.) lies in the selection of the judges. Too
often, people are grabbed at the last moment. Quite often, the
judges have very little knowledge of magic and may not even
recognize outright theft of effects and/or routines by
contestants. The I.B.M. requires at least two lay judges
involved in drama, theater or a related area for the Gold Medal
Competition but not for the preliminaries. I suspect DMS has hit
on a good solution in having the audience vote for the winners.
I was not able to see the close up contest in Baltimore.
However, I did get to see a special performance of Giovanni's
act. He was a likeable young man with a distinctive style. He
was entertaining and I enjoyed the performance. However, in my
opinion, it was not a Gold Cups caliber act. From discussions
with others, I am lead to believe there were other close up acts
that might have been of Gold Cups quality but I didn't see them.
I don't agree that restrictions or conditions are the solution at
all. In fact, I don't know that I would agree that there is a
problem in the terms you describe. I do think that the judging
needs to be of a higher standard and more consistent...but a
contest will always be a contest and the decisions will also
reflect a judgement call. Some will like the outcome and some
will not. I appreciate your taking the time and effort to voice
your thoughts, I wish that more people would do so. I hope
Howard will publish your comments, but since the LR doesn't have
a letters to the Editor column or an Editorial Page, I am not
sure where he can put it in the magazine.

You certainly aren't implying that art doesn't require certain skill
I'm sure. Is figure skating simply a skill? Of course not. The art
is in the interpretation. Is art the melding of skill and heart? I
think so. The more skill that the artist has at his/her disposal
the greater the freedom to express that inner feeling and under-
standing. An answer for which no question has been asked. One can
certainly point to those exceptions in art where there has been
little evidence of skill, only massive doses of heart. Imagine what
these rare individuals could have done had they possessed the skill
of a technician in addition. Skill without heart (soul) is merely
an exhibition of that skill. Obviously mechanical to the eye of the
artist. The more skill possessed by the artist, the greater the art.

a shame to use so powerful a concept as Olympics in conjunction with

Re: THIS WEEK AT THE CASTLE

Last night I went to the Castle and found the turnout remarkarbly light
even for a week night. I found out the entire evenings performances
were being given by the top junior magicians in the juniors club. It
was odd to see a 14 year old appear from behind the curtain in the
closeup room but he displayed exceptional skill with cards, coins, AND
the audience despite being visibly nervous. The Palace featured half
a dozen short acts instead of the usual 2 or 3 and what a treat it was
to see the final act- Topaz, the FISM winner for manipulation. I don't
recall how well he was received by our Magic! commentators but he was
really hot last night. Great stage personna and someone you liked the
minute you see him start his act. Full of energy and originality I'm
glad I caught his act! If other Castle members were not planning on
attending this weeks performance give it another thought. I was
impressed!

Re: CONTEST.TXT

Well, I guess you could say a Magician (as opposed to a Conjurian)
is someone that does things that are (supposedly) unexplainable
by the viewers.
A juggler, if he can juggle, say 24 balls, does not fool, people
know you toss em and catch em.... But a magi makes a spoon bend,
move or float, finds a card... he is a mojo man...
The casual viewer doesn't worry or think if it is ART... he/she
is more often, merely amused.
And yep, we are judging skill in one phase... art in another (the
freestyle) -- its just another activity for a convention... an
attempt at being different, breaking new ground, selling tickets,
you name it.
Having just witness the amazing one armed Rene Lavand, I would even
suggest a competition for the "hot guys" to work with one arm only.

Re: JUAN MAYORAL

Taboman... the Magic Olympics was really not much of an ORGANIZED
"event" as a fake Olympic TV special... much ike he Awards
fiasco seen here recently from Universal and Australia.. only the
Japanese version was much better and didn't have all the NON-Magic
stuff from celeb guests (at least the one version I viewed).
And, about 10 years ago I brought 20 of the worlds top magi (Kaps,
wessely, Topper, etc. etc.) to Japan for another "fake" Olympic
type event (Channing was involved with me too) that was a strictly
for TV event... with the Gold Medal ceremonies, etc. at the end.
Heck... we could do it here. You can name anything you want. Just
like Boxing... we could have weight classes, etc. etc. et al, ad
infinitum ad nauseum, ad Brunswick Stew and Road Kill Pie!

According to Pete Biro, you're the man with the info I need. I'm
trying to get my card sleights up to snuff. I've been away from magic
for about 10 years and have been badly bitten by the bug once again.
Anyway, I keep reading card tricks in my old magic mags that refer to
the Faro Shuffle, various Marlo sleights, and, of course, that old
favorite, the Elmsley Count. I understand a lot of Elmsley sleights
are in Tarbell, so I'm going through that book by book. Is there any
one book (or books) that you could recommend to help build a better
foundation of these obviously commonly used sleights? I know there are
a bunch of books by Ed Marlo around, but any in particular that you
might feel is the best? Any direction you might be able to point me in
would be greatly appreciated!

I believe it is Book City or something to that effect. The entrance is
not very imposing, but the store behind it is massive. The quality and
quantity of the magic section varies greatly from day to day - it is
often quite small. I suspect that anyone who wanders in on the right
day, when it is large, tends to buy it out. Their prices vary
considerably, but, so far as I know, they will not negotiate.

Yep. He was great (Shephard). When I was about 8 to 9 years old, I

pretend to be asleep while I listened to his show. I've always
remembered the basic recipe for the "coal garden" (the "Fungus" in
Minch's Lovecraftian) but couldn't remember the proportions of stuff.
I've seen some commercial versions for kids, but always felt they
lacked class. Hard to say how much I learned in those midnight

9 year old should have.

I regulary receive videotapes with japanese magic shows, and each
time I am heavuly bothered by the nasty habit of the Japanese
commentators to talk while the performer is doing his act.
Stage magic or close-up....they don't care are keep on talking

My question to you is what kind of comments are they giving??
- is it descriptive
- do they say how they think the trick works
- do they give technical comments???

I also wonder what the japanese magicians think about those
comments. Do they think it adds value to the performance???
Are you also informed how those comments have started. I have a lot
of tapes from a lot of countries but on none of them they talk
during the acts.

Really appreciate your answer.....

Re: INVENTIONS-GENERAL

Max, I think you miss my point. If we look at music for example around
the turn of the century you see several classes of music. In the 90
odd years since then we have seen, big band, rock and roll, rap,
electronic muzak and many other forms. If you look at dance as another
example in the last 90 years at the new forms it has taken. The gap
in style/invention call it what you will is far greater in other forms
of entertainment than it seems to have been in magic nor was it my
intent to run down any specific performer. I enjoy very much watching
Copperfield or Blackstone (who I will see at Abbotts in couple of
weeks)
But I do think that if you look at any magic performance given around
the turn of the century and look at one given today, individual styles
aside, there is far less variation than in other entertainment formats.
I don't think you'll find the degree of difference in styles that come
close to the difference between say ballet and break dancing or
classical music and rap. And in this area is where I raise my
questions. Where are our electronic guitars/Chuck Berry's etc. etc.
The real pioneers of new and radically different ideas. Were still
turning out classical orchestras, albiet very good ones, some like the
Philadelphia philharmonic, some like the Boston Pops, but still
recognizably orchestra's.
.
My challenge, to myself as much as to any one else to to come up with
a magical equivalent to trends found eleswhere.

Re: FARO SHUFFLE, ETC

The Jerry Mentzer "Counts, Cuts and Subtlety" which was recently touted
by David Lichtman is the single most comprehensive source for the type
of card sleights that have been in prominent use during the past couple
of decades. Many of the Marlo sleights can be found in a single volume,
"M.I.N.T." which is a collection of his work in "New Tops" magazine
over a lengthy period, during which he first published a number of what
are now fairly standard techniques.
I'm not at all sure why you're interested in learning the Faro
Shuffle, as its application is rather specific. There are several books
which explore it, by such as Marlo, Swinford and Fulves, as well as the
seminal series of articles by Elmsley which ran in the "Pentagram."

Re: JAPANESE VIDEO COMMENTS

Unfortunately, those annoying comments are quite standard in Japanese
television. It has a cultural basis in the Japanese focus on group
identity -- at least, that's my theory. In fact, even in the era of
silent movies it was standard in Japanese movie theaters to have a man
standing next to the screen providing commentary.
What is particularly annoying is that, for the most part, what they
are saying is quite meaningless. Often it is something like, "Gee, I
wonder what this magician is going to do with that red cloth?" or, "Oh,
what a surprise it was when that bird appeared just now!"
Most of the Japanese magicians I know also dislike these needless
comments, which are distracting.
In my work with Japanese television I have not been able to put an
end to this habit (although I will take credit for influencing the
producers to do less editing of acts; they used to cut them into little
pieces). The one thing I have managed to do, occasionally, is to
provide some background information concerning the performers and/or
the routines, so that at least sometimes the voice-over comments have
some actual informational value.
Anyway, I think you are lucky not to understand what they are
saying; it is more annoying to know. Once in a while, however, there is
a very funny comment. My favorite was during a video of Doug Henning,
when Debby Henning was dancing around on stage. The commentator said,
"My, she's exuberant -- but then again, she's an American!"

I believe I was the one who brought up the idea of paying judges. I
certainly agree with you that paying them is not going to guarantee
competence, but it is worth doing for two basic reasons: first, some
sort of financial offering (if only a registration and hotel room) is
likely to attract a larger number of competent people. Second, if
judging is to be done correctly, it will require a combination of
hard-earned expertise and significant effort, which quite simply
deserves some sort of compensation.

There was nothing "fake" about either Magic Olympics special. The
situation was made clear to the viewing audience: various performers
from assorted countries were invited to compete in an international
contest of stage magic. There was never any attempt to suggestthat
threwa ay official tie-in or sponsorship from the actual Olympics.
Your comparison to the International Magic Awards is inapt; the
Japanese shows were legitimate contests.

So, your statement that "the Magic Olympics was really not much of an
organized event" is nonsense. I spent far too much time involved with
the organizing of them to let your comment pass...

Ah Stan,
You've just given me the clue. The second oldest profession must
of been gambler. That's the ticket. You are right, they had a lot of
books on gambling when I was there. Actually I have interests in
many things related to my interest in magic which is most consuming.
For instance, they had many books on furniture design, earth sciences
biography, woodworking, etc. I do remember that they had a reprint
of the Hopkins book which some consider to be a worthwhile text on
antique magic. I guess I'm too grounded in the past, but that's just
me. The future seems to be in good hands anyway. I'm just happy and

I think the idea of a mandatory section is not a good thing. It has not
a lot to do with being a good magician or not, if one is capable of

able to do such things in such a way that there would be no way to tell

Re: CONTEST.TXT

From what I've been able to gather, most pros don't feel that
magic contests have a lot to do with being a good magician
anyway. I spent over two decades in the professional music
business, the last as a professional manager and always advised
my clients as they were breaking in NOT to enter contests since
there is no way to gauge how any judging staff is going to vote
anyway and to loose, and sometimes badly, just doesn't look good
to the professional resume. Most contest people, are just that;
contestants, collecting trophys and awards the way I collect
dust and barbecue recipes.
.
In my way of thinking, there must be some clearly defined set of
rules in any contest unless it is an open event. Part of my previous
statements have been made "tongue in cheek" and I don't know which
you're replying to, but....if you're gonna have a contest, make it
A contest.
.
Also, I have been comparing contests to Olympic events of which I
have some experience having coached a contestant for the 1984
Olympics (she tied for third in her event). These contests have
clearly defined rules and for the most part the contestants are
AMATEURS, though an Olympic gold medal can mean at least a
million dollars in endorsements, etc if you get the gold in the
-right event. These contests HAVE clearly defined rules.
.
As far as contests for professionals are concerned, there are NO
RULES and he who has the most money in the end WINS since the
judge is the market place.
.
Referencing incest; I have no experience in this theatre.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

I assume skill as a given. Trouble with a lot of magicians -- and of
course I am generalizing -- is that once they get through an effect
without dropping the prop on their foot they think they've mastered it.
This is about equivalent to an actor thinking he has mastered a part
once he can remember all the words. Skill is the tool with which art
is created -- but heart and soul is what gives it meaning. I think
that rewarding people for simply demonstrating skill in magic technique
AND NO MORE is a very very bad idea -- sends all the wrong signals as
to what magic is about.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

No, I don't buy your definition; any garage mechanic can do things I
can't explain -- and don't much care to learn how. The difference, I
think, between an artist and a novelty act is that the latter does
something simply to PROVE HE OR SHE CAN DO IT -- while the former, the
artist, uses the art to communicate something more. This is certainly
not a hard and fast rule, and there are always gray areas; Michael
Moschen, for example, is so transcendently good at what he does that
skill blends invisibly into art -- but it should be noted that he is
also working in interesting conceptual areas.
The fact that this kind of thing is done at most magic conventions is
why I don't go to most magic conventions...

Thanks for the Dutch lesson, Arnaud. You certainly included all the
key phrases.

I'd assumed that Tommy Wonder was fluent in English. Is he only able
to read and write it but not speak it? This would not be without
precedent - Tarzan, according to Edgar Rice Burroughs, learned to read
while still in the jungle and while never hearing English spoken; thus,
he could read and write it, but not speak it. Is Holland such a
jungle?

Re: CONTEST.TXT

I think the problem with presenting close-up to a parlour size
audience is the fact that the performer attempts to adjust his
material in size so that EVERYONE can 'see' the magic.
.
Someone suggested using a small room (e.g. the Castle close-up room
has only 22 seats, with room for 10 or so more standing behind) with
closed cicuit TV to OTHER rooms. In this way the performer would be
able to do real close-up effects and not feel he had to go to bigger

effects.
.
The size of the rooms used for the close-up contests were just about
right.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

If everyone was required to the same effects, then in addition to
determining a person's skill level, you would easily be able to se
differences in style, presentation methods, and ultimately the art.
.
How many different ways have you seen cups-and-balls performed ?
Some present it a straight demonstration of slight of hand skill,
whereas others present it in a comedic setting, still others as an
interesting story.
.
Having all contestants performing the same effects, its seems to me
would make the contest more meaningful. The optionals would be where
an individuals creativity would measured, whereas the compulsories
would allow a fairer comparison of basic skill AND creativity ! If we
are going to have contests at all, at least having some basis for
comparison makes some sense - does this ?

Re: CONTEST.TXT

Magic can be considered many things. To some it is an art. To others
a craft. Then to some it is a passtime or hobby. From what I saw
watching a double handfull of contest acts (granted, I saw them from
mostly backstage lastly) on stage it was none of the above. How can
ART be judged. I just don't think it can because it becomes opinion,
not fact. Art, as defined in the Krayborg dictionary is stated as
that which is _beautiful_; above the ordinary; but who is to decide
what is beautiful and if excellence becomes commonplace, where is
art? To me, magic is many things and at different times, but above
all it is a passion. I view my roll is that of friend and helper.
Art is personal and often goes unnoticed by the common man who is
too busy dealing with the ordinary.

Thats right close-up magicians, it's time to dust off the
close-up mats as well as the brain cells for what promises
to be an outstanding 4 hour close-up lecture. If you have

opportunity to learn from, in my opinion, one of the true
Masters of Close-up magic. SPACES ARE LIMITED. The price has
now been cast in concrete and is set for $25.00 for
preregistration and $35.00 if you register at the door. The
reason I am putting this message up this early is because of
the outstanding support RING 21 has received from the
members of MAGIC! in past lectures etc... we felt we would
give MAGIC! members as well as RING 21 members an advanced
chance to register. We hope to have a wide screen set-up so
that there will be no bad seats.

He is trying to make a living in a medium which pays handsomly for his
lack of ethics. I presume, however, that the P&T show was simply a
commercial for what may be a couple of his friends. Two things were
interesting - one was his reference to a show that had been on Broadway
for three months as "long running," and the other was how he actually
balked at having "Gordo," the P&T shill in the audience, posing as an
offended magician.
Apparently, despite his minimal sense of ethics, he felt that they had

Actually, should be easy to work around. We are NOT going camping.
We are dropping the boys off at the Boy Scout Camp in Goshen where
they will be happy campers for a week. If there is to be an event on
August 3, then we will just drive down to my folks on Friday evening
and take the boys over to camp on Saturday and return to Dee Cee in
time for supper and Scotty. It is about a three hour drive back up
and the boys have to be there around 2 pm, so we should be able to
make it.

Re: CONTESTS

I certainly have no problem with paying for any service, be it
judging or whatever. I agree completely with you that if the judges
were selected based on competence rather than availability, that the
contests would likely improve. Payment might induce more competent
individuals to judge, I don't know. My comment was intended to point
out that payment doesn't of and in itself insure any service since
the exchange between you and Mike gave that implication. Actually, I
feel the judging problem is likely to be more complex. First, one
needs to insure the person selecting the judges is competent to do so
and not overburdened by other organizational duties. Second there is
the question of magician judges versus lay judges. Third, one must
decide if the judging is to be based on a checklist of criteria or
a simple rating of entertainment value. Almost anyone could be
deemed competent to judge entertainment value based on how well they
liked an act. A requirement for competence implies the ability to
judge based on experience with some set of criteria.
Of course, all of this is part and parcel of why contests are always
so ripe for controversy at almost every phase. Maybe Biro have the
better approach in just letting the acts buy off the judges.

Re: CONTESTS

Actually, I have not have that much involvement with the mechanics of
the I.B.M. contests since I laid out the basic design in 1980 (stage)
and 1981 (close up). Insofar as I know, the judges do not have any
pre-training. They may meet briefly just prior to judging. It is an
excellent idea. I know that some might even judge year after year.
I am not aware of any criteria sheets being used for any of the I.B.M
contests. I did not include any in the original design as I am not
in favor of them. Jerry Schnepp may have implemented them. I don't
know. I have always favored simplicity. No catagories, no criteria.
Just a simple rating from 1-10 based on how well you liked the act
taking into account all your personal biases. Have a bunch of judges
and throw out the high and low scores.
Actually, at the DMS we have tried criteria and the approach I just
outlined. You get about the same results either way. Important
thing is to throw out the high and low scores.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

I dunno...I have problems with the creation of specialized contest
catagories beyond the two large ones of stage and close up. It is
almost impossible for me to define even these two. I remember seeing
the late Cliff Greene hold an audience enthralled from the stage with
nothing but a deck of playing cards. Last year in St. Louis, Tom
Noddy was more powerful in close up than in his more usual venue of
the stage (albeit it bubble magic). There are other examples. We
must be very careful to understand what we are judging in these
things. If we want to reward the presentation of pocket tricks, that
is one thing. If we want to reward the cleveness of pocket tricks,
that could be something else. Even the use of video and monitors
introduces a distortion factor. Where will the judges be? In the
live audience of a few people or watching the monitors?

A friend of mine married a Russian translator and I had pictured in my
mind a heftly lady driving a tractor. She is stunningly beautiful!
Took them to the Castle and Falkenstein was doing his mentalism act
where he asks for someone who knows a foreign language to assist him on
stage. While he's blind folded she wrote a message on the blackboard
in Russian. When she turned it so the audience could see it they
really hooped and hollered thinking there was no way Falkenstein was
going to duplicate that mess of letters. Of course he did to a large
round of applause. He took his blindfold off at that time and his eyes
bugged out a bit looking at her. Nice, Very nice for a tractor driver!

Stan,
Charlie Randall told me they (H&R Books) have a new list coming out
in August. Don't know if you're on their mailing list or not, or if
Charlie will be putting his next list (#4) up on MAGIC! but they are
quite a good source for a lot of different used magic books. Hank Lee
has his _Book Book_ catalog of new magic books and is a reliable
supplier of same. I've had some luck finding some older (50+) magic
books at flea markets dirt cheap, though I'd guess that for time
spent it hasn't been that good, though I've found some stuff on
occasion. Do you know when the next Castle Swap meet will be?

thinking of buying if there's an interest from the membership.
The interest would be - you buy at a 10% off list discount and
I'll contribute ALL profits over and above my costs toward the
operation of MAGIC!. Lemme know if you're interested and what you

Re: CONTEST.TXT

The problem with performers doing the same effects is fairly elementary
--what about the performers who don't WANT to do effects others are
doing? It seems to me that choice of material is a very basic level of
artistic development, and this would penalize (or eliminate from
competition) those who strive to be original.
My own feeling about magic, incidentally, is that NO TWO PERFORMERS
should EVER do the same effects. Magic is supposed to be mysterious
and special; how mysterious or special can something be if a hundred
people can do it?
In my capacity as Magic Castle Librarian -- lemme tell ya, there is
more good magic in the books and magazines than all the magicians who
ever work for audiences could use in a hundred years. There is no
reason for anyone to ever do stuff others do. I feel very strongly
about this; I once worked on a mental effect for three years and then
dropped it like a hot potato when someone in the same area started
working on it. Mind you, this was not something I had invented; had it
been, THEY would have dropped it.
I think the kind of contest you are proposing would send very bad
signals, and indeed reward bad behavior. Sorry if I sound hardline on
this -- I don't mean this to be personal at all -- but I don't think
magic is strong enough to suffer that sort of thing much longer.

Indeed magic is many things -- to me it is first and foremost a

had nothing whatever to do with what I call magic.

If you have the newest RDMAGIC I think it allows you to ENTER a

Actually, although the word "Private" appears in the command list,
ECANET/MAGIC! policy states that "there are NO private messages."
There are, however, personal ones. Personal messages are those which
can only be read by the sender, the intended receiver and operations
personnel. By using Personal (or "Private") for stuff that is not of
general interest, you keep the message base for the general readership
focused on magic.

Being a novice may give us just what we are looking for! I don't care
really what tricks were done or how they did it, rather, how did
the audience react, who ENTERTAINED, what "loked" magical versus
what was merely a presentation of dealer items.

The FISM reports gave us a wonderful flavor of what it was like to

reading about the gatherings at the bar, after the show, etc., may
be the next best thing to being there.

If I remember correctly, the skaters at the last Olympics hated the

compulsory figures, but they still realized the need for a technical
yardstick to weed out the one time wonders from the dedicated artists

As it turned out, the compulsory scores made the difference between
Witt and Liz Manley since Liz clearly outskated Katerina in freestyle
but didn't have the technical discipline to be awarded the gold.

By the way, since a number of the IBM Convention Committee are here
on-line, in addition to Personal (or "Private") messages, we also have
the ability to create a special section just for such a purpose. That
means that the Committee could, if it wished, exchange messages which
all Committee members could read and reply to, without the general
membership of MAGIC! being involved.

Re: EGADS!

Yes, I was being serious. I have attempted to channel my ecological
concerns into areas that are not already well served. Recycling old
newspapers, for example, already is popular enough that it does not
need my help, other than to participate in existing programs. I have,
however, identified three areas that I am active in and that are
sensitive to me.

The most important of these is concern for Diplasiocoela (for those
other than Wells, Frogs). Because of my close attachment, I really am
quite sensitive to attempts at humor which involve their mutilation.
I don't want to get too long-winded about it here, but you may consider
me a frog's rights activist.

Second are the Octopi, most specifically Giant Octopi. As you know,
they are a very unique order, virtually alien to all the other life
forms on this planet (as you know, their blood is not iron based) and
there is a considerable body of evidence that they are intelligent.

Thirdly, I am a Plants Rights Activist. Again, too long a story to go
into here, but basically it boils down to my opposition to
vegitarianism.

Since these items seldom arise on MAGIC!, they should not be major
concerns in the flow of conversation. And I do not mind humor directed
at my green pants, my nickname, or my affinity for frogs. Nor do I
mind humor which shows Frogs or Octopi in a positive light - one of my
favorite cartoons, for example, is the one with the Frog sitting at a
resturant counter eyeing the fly in the soup of the human party next to
him. He is saying something like, "You don't plan to waste that fly,
do you?"

I hope that the above will clarify my personal positions. I do not
think them generally worthy of a discussion here on MAGIC!, but would
be happy to expand upon them when next we meet.

Re: ENTERTAINMENT NEEDED

Actually, he seems to like both music and magic. He just returned home
from his first evening at the Hollywood Bowl. His specific request for
his birthday party was Big Bird doing magic and face painting.

There are a few magicians that he considers highly, and, if they were
available, I think he would forgo Big Bird. Alas, I don't think any of
them are available for the assignment - his list would probably include
Michael Ammar, Burt Carpenter, Tabby Crabb, David Copperfield, Max
Maven and Dan Witkowski.

His list of favorite musicians would include Jose' Carreras, Placido
Domingo, Zubin Mehta, Luciano Pavarotti, and Itzhak Perlman.

I'm not certain that his colleagues would be as impressed by some of
these as they would be by Big Bird.

Now you can understand why it is best to search for a Big Bird who does
magic and face painting.

Does Jerry plan to sign onto the board? I know that he has a
computer, but not sure if he has a modem. As Chairman of the Awards

a thankless job and Jerry has handled many sensitive and difficult
problems well over the years. He cannot necessarily solve all the
supposed problems by himself. The contest discussion thread has been
interesting, but I am not yet convinced there is a major problem that
requires resolution. Even if a current awarding of the Cups raises
questions, that does not necessarily mean the current system needs a
fix. I haven't heard those complaints in past years.

Parrots reside in an outdoor aviary. It was an experiment based on
some work started by a breeder from Norway and carried on in Germany.
We set out to breed solid yellow birds (lutino) in a colony situation
but our most beautiful female has so far destroyed over 15 young. We
did get one full yellow chick. One cat, Inky, slipped into the pen
last year to sample a bird and they (the birds) almost killed her.
She gives the aviary wide birth now. We fhad some birds in the house
in individual cages, but the cats tended to dive at the cages, etc.
Usually better to introduce cohabitats when young.

Wayne plays the part of Joey Esposito, Elvis' show builder, etc.
.
Once, when we (Urban Cowboy Band) played a show in NYC, I took
Johnny Lee (Lookin For Love) to Tannen's. With us was Mike Schalaci,
Gene de Jean's stepson, and Tony Spina gave us a nice tour. Johnny
bought two hand flashers and we were off. When we got back to Texas
he had been using them in Charlie Daniel's "Devil Went Down To Ga"
song. The lights would go black on the part that said_"fire flew from
his finger tips"_ and Johnny would let off a double volley. We were
playing Gilley's Club. The ceiling was just a couple of feet above ou
r heads and when Johnny fired the hand cannons (loaded to the max, I
must add) the burning flash paper bounced off the ceiling and dropped
straight down, still burning, toward a woman sitting in the front
row. She had a large "bee hive" hairdo with about three cans of spray
onit holding it up. You should of seen our faces as we watched the
fireball descend toward her head and we were imagining an explosion
as they ignited her highly flammable head. As luck would have it,
the flashpaper ball burned out about five inches before setting her o
n fire. She never knew she was in danger. We'd been doing large auds
and the double loads were great with the headroom but now with a low
ceiling.

Right on bro.... you see the need for them all to do the same
trick, example, Vernon's cups and balls -- sans changes -- gives
a truer measure of one's ability. I have seen many "so called" top
guys FLASH the loads and palms terribly. If you are going to do
this and cannot do it without the fatal flash... which non magi
will see too... you don't measure up near the top.
A great argument re the Cups and Balls, over the fact that the Paul
Fox cups were best because the loads would almost look bigger than
the cups was turned to RUBISH by Ken Brooke.
He grabbed the cups and we went to a local pub, he spotted a group
of about 4 people (about 30 yr olds) butted right in, did the
Vernon routine finishing with some small, old beat up looking lemons
he had. They were not too much bigger than the balls he was doing
the lead in part of the effect with. And when he revealed the
final loads the place went wild! He got up and said, "See (to the
guy swearing that BIG was what was important) it DOESN'T MATTER
what the size... IT'S THE CHANGE!"
His Skill was impeccable... he fooled everyone... and at the same
time was HIGHLY ENTERTAINING.

How could he like lightweight, nasal screechers like Domingo and
Pavarotti and not appreciate the REAL work of Caruso, Gigli and
Lanza???!!!

Re: CONTESTS

I believe that Jerry does have plans to join us here on MAGIC!

I've stayed out of the contest discussion for a variety of reasons.
But I tend to concur with your thoughts.

Actually, I believe they transformed the property into art. I believe
they do make a Chinese Bit set, but El-Tab has the list.

Re: MY FIRST INVENTION

Do you realize I was in Kraborg for three days and I NEVER saw the
aviary or the parrots??? Is it out past the golf course? Or the
studio? Or is it just in some section of the vast demesne that I never
got to? Guess I should have taken the bus tour of Kraborg, huh?

Re: ENTERTAINMENT NEEDED

Yeah, but do we book it for a music convention, a magic convention, or
an ornithologists convention? Maybe the best venue would be the Music
City Conclave!

Re: ENTERTAINMENT NEEDED

In truth, no. He has only seen snippets of MTV. He thinks that the
video system only gets CNN (which he likes for the sports news), PBS
(for Sesame Street) and videos.

It is not out of my lack of respect for MTV that this is the case. It
is just that we are not big television watchers. Many evenings the set
doesn't get turned on at all.

Re: ENTERTAINMENT NEEDED

You have a point, except for Lanza. But he is still at the stage where
he prefers visuals with his music (for the most part). If you haven't
already seen it, the Carreras-Domingo-Pavarotti In Concert video is a
KILLER.

No, but I figured that I would make the offer of a section if the

I'm sorry. I guess you missed the walking tour of the place. The
aviary is located down the Poison Ivy path just south of the east
wing.
