Yes, it's (goluf) on west and north. 1st hole by studio, 9th hole by spring, 18th hole due west of house. Due to my arthritic condition, I rarely swing a club though. There was a second prize (you see you need 80 or more points to gain first place) given and that was to Wenk. He did Misled, a rope effect and his paper effect with the punched hole messages. The concensus of the Jury was that Misled and the Rope idea WERE NEW INVENTIONS, but the paper item was a re-do of an old principle. Thus not enuf points for a First. I disagree, I believe the guy with most points i is first... AND... I don't agree with the name of category. I think a prize shoud be called "Best New Trick". He slid me and my pal into his dressing room while he changed and we rapped until 10 seconds before he went onstage. After he slipped us into the VIP reception. It was the usual crap of the greats and near greats rammin and jammin trying to get his attention, and autograph. Cool, me I just stood my spot and LENO came over to me! Har... He asked me to call him next time I go south and come over to see his new garage! I (and my pal mostly) are setting him up to see the private collection of cars owned by Otis Chandler (owner of the LA Times!!!). The hole in the coin makes it much more noticeable than a Mexican copper Peso (alongside an English copper penny). IE: You use a silver half dollar, a copper English Penny and a smaller Chinese coin with hole in it. They all look totally different. The throw off to a gaff is how to hide a coin with a hole in it. The post with the small piece of a half dollar is a genius idea!!! When Joe Stevens gets all the pieces he will RE ISSUE the "Chinese Bit" a Ken Brooke item... then you will have one of the great coin effects extant. Also the Silver to Copper using a USA penny and Silver dollar, in spectator's hands is very very strong commercial item. The blowoff is the Dollar becomes a Penny (the dollar size giant one). I started out to change the world with a song and then the world changed me so I dropped out. I've made some connections for a few song writers and have been managing rock bands for the past few years. Two years ago I decided to dream again and let the magic happen. During my tenure as an independent record producer I helped put 11 records in the charts. Was in a grammy winner in 1980 or 81 I forget now. I work with only one band now, Bone Pony. They are young and wild like I used to be and I understand where they are comi ng from so I try to help any way I can. I've been building stuff for magicians, mostly tabman tables, of late. I intend BP to be my last go. 80% of my time is involved with magic and I couldn't be happier with this or with the people with which I now associate. I find magicians to be among the most intelligent people on the planet, and perfer them to the shuck and jive of the "real" world. Within the world of magic I've found a place for me. As my friend, Mike King put it; Camalot. Now only if I can figure out how to move this place to the mountains east of LA. The gaff in my set is a shell Chinese coin (with hole) that fits over a gaff that shows centavo on one side, and half dollar on the other. I THINK you're saying that the advantage of the "pegged" gaff is that it allows you to use an English Penny rather than a centavo, and that this allows for three, more diff. looking coins. Personally if this is what you meant, I don't see the big diff., as in the unpegged version you've got three of the same-sized coins, it's just the chinese coin that's the size of the half (instead of the English Penny). Personally, if a performer who works in the same circuit as I do, does a certain effect I will stay away from it, since it would be very bad, both for me and the other performer. Too many agents already feel that magicians are interchangeble. I do not however mind too much if people do the same effect but are working totally different markets, but the ideal would of couse be that there would be no duplication at all. And the least one should do is to make the effect one's own, notonly to differentiate between performers, but what I think is more important, to have one's own personality come out. That I think is very essential. It is terrible when you cannot do something the way you want because of a lack of technique. On the other hand, magic is NO sport! When a performer comes at a level where we start talking business, then I firmly believe that there is no jury in the world capable of judging the technique involved. Even when asked to do for instance a double lift and nothing more. At the point where a level is reached where the magician is proficient, it cannot be truly judged anymore. Based on a prior thread regarding the general knowledge and criteria for ring membership, what kind of judges do they have ? . I base this comment on a discussion I overheard prior to the close-up contest, of a member of the Baltimore ring being thrown in at the last second to fill the judges panel in that particuliar room. I had met this guy three years ago at the DMS and he had just retired from Govt service and was just getting into magic. I don't know how competent he may have been, but 3 years of magic and being a member of a ring doesn't seem like a whole lot of experience to be able to judge a broad range of close-up acts. With all the books and magazines, there is so much material -- all it requires is a fair amount of research and a bit of thought. I have to say though, that I have heard from more than one magician "...but I can't visualize it from reading it in a book. I have to see it performed..." Part of this may be the different ways people process information, but I think a lot of it is that magicians just skim over effects to learn the gimmick, and do not read carefully at all. Your point about effects expressing personality is quite important -- selection of the specific effects is just as important as the way those effects are then performed. If all the performers do the same act, it sort of means they all have the same personality (or may as well), and since they are interchangeable, the buyer can simply purchase the cheapest one. The new new one is a Rifle. The routine they did was great. Three or four guys entered a scene (wherehouse) and moved some whiskey crates around, stacking them. One new principle they were showing turned out to be previously invented by Ali Bongo (who was one of the judges -- they said they never saw his version -- I believe them) which was a levitation type gaff that enabled a small guy to pick up a box that contained a hidden person in it. IE: the weight of box was taken up by the gaff!!! Anyway there was a RAID and one guy was KOd and put on a rifle (made no sense realistic-wise but looked good in magic act) and the rifle was on a flat stand on the floor... INCREDIBLY SMALL STUFF. The Pireced effect was done with the guy laying out horizontally on the rifle. All the works, etc are IN THE RIFLE. And it looked very real. I really enjoyed being a member of the FISM jury, and the main gain --if I can be heard-- will be to improve the way FISM contests are run. For example. The entry form puts down a list of categories for you to be in. Manipulation, General Magic, etc. Many acts were in the wrong category. Many did NO MANIP's yet entered Manip. I, and Ali Bongo, both feel there should be NO CATEGORY, the Judges decide. Of course you need competant judges. I could go on. (I only will add one thing) At FISM there were NO preliminaries... 146 acts. Maybe 1/3 were DREADFUL and wasted EVERYBODY'S time. 1/3 were OK, and the other third very good -- with a few GREAT ONES. To qualify, one must have the signature of the President of your local club. Who the hell at FISM knows 1: who is the pres, for ex ample of a Ring ind Demoines Iowa? 2: who anywhere knows if the guy that signed it was really the guy (or gal, sorry) or just the entrants uncle? A percentage of the other component of household dust, particularly closer to the front doors and windows, is cosmic - small bits of meteorites from the cosmos. You enter the message as a Reply or Append and save it. As soon as you save it, the system will respond with the message number of your new message. You can then READ it, using that message number (there are a variety of ways to do this - you can type the new message number on the very next menu line if you are doing a R;*). At the end of reading it, the message submenu appears. One of the choices is EDIT. If you select edit, you will be allowed to edit the header, and one of the allowed changes is from public to private. Again, I'm not sure it is an appropriate topic for MAGIC!, but basically my view is that there is a body of research that shows that plants feel pain, etc., although in ways that are not directly comparable to that of animals. Nevertheless, just because they can't scream when being killed doesn't mean that we should ignore their rights as life forms. The deliberate killing of life, at the cellular level, is the same whether it is a plant or an animal. Thus I view those who eschew the killing of animals but who will cheerfully sit down and eat lettuce as either misinformed or hypocritical. Which is his right, though when the topic was the bootlegging of a videotape he published, his attitude instantly changed. Busby is very good for unusual items -- things you won't find anywhere else -- he carries the Tabmn table, for instance. There are other, more efficient ways to purchase more common books and effects, as I have found that the delivery time from Busby magic is... shall we say not consistent. It is well worth being on their mailing list, and he is, to his credit, very honest in his descriptions of items and books -- you won't find the truth stretched and bent, as you will other places... Well, all the major countries, England, Spain, France, Italy, etc. were invited to compete to select the World's Greatest Artist. They all worked a year. Came to the Judging place (for story lets say Rome) and Caesar was the final judge... Each painting was on a wall withing an octagonal building (8 pix) and each was covered with a red velevet drape, with gold drawstring. I have no idea why Burt decided to do that, but it was clever - once. Also would be a good idea for driving someone with a fax machine nuts. To do the backwards trick perfectly (the limitations of the characters available on a computer made Burt, for the most part, use the standard character set, although he was very clever with the back slashes and reversed apostrophies, etc.) you need to reverse the entire letter. Would be perfect on a fax machine - guy would probably call a technician and have the whole thing apart. Here's how: o Type your letter onto CLEAR overhead transparency material. If you don't have a laser printer or other printer that will do this, print onto paper and photocopy onto transparency material. o Reverse the transparency in a photocopier and make a paper copy. (Your paper copy will now be a perfectly reversed version of your letterhead, letter, etc.). o Fax the reversed version. Naturally, this same technique could be used to make reverse prints of anything for close-up or stage use too. ELVIS AND ME is one of my rare appearances in TV or film in a dramatic role. The majority of my scenes are in Part Two and a large amount of the film was cut...partly due to the four-hour allowance from ABC and partly for personal/political reasons as Priscilla served as Executive Producer on the project, which was based on her best-selling book. TV GUIDE gives the miniseries a three-star (***) rating and, in terms of popularity, it ranked as one of the highest-rated miniseries ever when it first aired. Tonight marks only the second American broadcast of ELVIS AND ME. It has been broadcast around the world in many languages. I enjoyed the project because we shot it mostly in sequence, which is very rare in TV or film. I do know that any action I've got in the entertainment biz right now is through someone I know very well, not through some competative process. This isn't to say that I don't "have the goods", but I'm not the only one with the goods. Years ago when I was hanging out at Gilley's and tryng for a gig there, Johnny Lee told me on two occasions (a valuable lesson) "It sure would be nice to have you up here with us, but nobody is going to give it to you. You've got to want it bad enough to get it yourself."I did, and I did. Having the talent is the given, there are many more factors involved. The only contests I've ever won were with myself.
