Re: CONTEST.TXT

Yes, DARYL was so ahead of them they had no idea what he had done.
I am not patting myself on the back, as I followed what he was
doing, altho I did NOT SEE THE MOMENT of the palm (a good performer
should never allow the moment of a secret move to be noticed).
Matter of fact many magicians think that ONLY THEY notice the moves.
But believe me, if an average magician sees it the laymen, if they
are interested enough to be watching see it too. They are usually
to polite to say anything.
Actually in DARYL's case, performance WAS NOT BEING JUDGED, only
the method as he entered in the "invention" category. Frankly I
think he only did this as a way to have his effects seen by a large
number of people, like a dealer demo...

Re: CONTEST.TXT

Thanks Max. No, I didn't read the Cornelius msg as a put down at
all, but I think not of John as one that does parties or kid shows,
but creates magic and sells/performs to other magi (for the most
part). Will try a couple of other sources on MacAbee. Did you know
that John Mullholland's secretary used to wear a full set of silver
bracelet linking rings? I got a ton of material for my book from
Jay Marshall, anecdotes, happenings, ideas, etc. Now all I have to
do is integrate them into the material I had already done.

You can always let the dogs play with the new case for about 30
seconds... that will give it the well worn look. (They could even
do that to an aluminum Halliburton!!!)
.
For those of you that don't know, the first time Tabman drove ME
onto his property he said, "You better stay in the car awhile (as
he got out) to let them get used to your scent!" As I sat there
surrounded by six huge dogs, all over 100 lbs... sniffin' and
snortin' -- then after about 15 minutes I said to myself, "Hey
dummy, you're a dog person.. they won't hurt you" so I flung the
door open and leaped out... after about 40 licks and leaps... all
was good. I lived to tell the story. (I think)!

a bronze placard stating something about a guy named Donkey "DICK"
Keefer, head of the early E. Clampus Vitus outfit. They are really
nutcase characters. Noticable by their red shirts (representing
the blood of dead miners) and black vests (in mourning). They were
formed to help widows and orphans of those killed in the mines.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

For example the Van Cliburn piano competions, the Tcychosky (spelling
?) competion, etc. Certainly classical music is considered an art
form. The primary reason for the competition is for unknown performer
s to get known and thus get bookings. Its a short cut to the big $
and recording contracts etc.
.
Isn't it also true of magic contests. I know Johnnie Ace's income
certainly went up, since he won FISM.
.
Just as in music, there are artists who choose not to compete and
prefer to build their craft through other avenues, the same holds tru
e for magic.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

See my comment to David re classical music competitons. There is a
specific set of music to choose from. This way the judges are all
quite familiar with the base and can then more aptly judge to subtle
technique, and artistic form provided BY EACH CONTESTANT.
.
If in a contest there were a set of standard effects that one could
choose to perform, then you would have a basis for comparison. The
really creative types would certainly add their own unique touches.
It seems to be the only reason to have a set of compulsaries is to
put every one on an equal footing as far as material is concerned. In
this way the personal bias of the judge would not be a factor, and
they would in a way be comparing apples to apples rather than cumquat
s or watermelons. In the original idea the contest would have 2 parts
compulsaries and open. It's during the open phase that a person could
do the unique and inventive stuff and if they also showed this same
ability in the compulsaries, then they would be the winner.
.
I remember years ago seeing a talent show at a movie theatre at inter
mission. There was this kid who played an incredible trumpet solo (I
being a trumpet player at the time, thought he was clearly the best).
The bimbo that won was a baton twirler that was hanging out of her
minimal costume. The judges clearly thought she had more (different ?
) talent than the truly gifted musician. My point is that most contes
ts don't measure anything unless there is some structure or criteria
upon which to judge !
.
And finally, of course magic is not a sport, I merely used the analog
y to try to make a point. Perhaps the classical music competition, is
more apropos.

If you want to vanish lit cigs get the metal type with the mesh sides
that have three prongs inside. You can disappear a cig and go back

never leave home with out it.

I use the pull pinned to the MIDDLE of the back of my jacket near
the collar. The vanish goes inside the coat on the right side and I
can then retrieve it WITH EITHER hand by merely reaching into the
back of the coat through the center vent - its hanging right there
ready to be produced at will.

Hard to retrieve if you send it up your sleeve - messy too as you
may have smoke coming out of your sleeve, whereas with it in back of
the jacket no one sees it.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

I think that with such a system, you are encouraging a certain type of
magic -- and sacrificing the groundbreaking, creative elements.
Perhaps not sacrificing them as much as de-emphasizing them.

The classical metahpor is apt, but not in the way you intended.
The composition of new classical music is all but a dead art form. The
re are such composers working today, and for all I know there work is
brilliant, but because of the structure of the classical music world,
all the energy and money is spent on reinterpreations and
re-performances of the "classics."

My value judgement, and that's all it is, is that if we're ongto
have competitions, (and I agree that they are, in one form or another,
inevitable), that they enocourage, reward, and explore creativitiy --
the better for the health of our art.

If there is room for the suggested, all do the same effect competition,
it is as a sideshow, a place where the finger-flingers can grease their
knuckles, and where performers who revise, rather than create, can show
off their revision skills... I realize there is a tiny difference
between revising an old idea/effect/concept, and creating a new one.
However, the difference is a concrete one, and we should be encouraging
creativity on that side of the line.

Re: CONTESTS

I personally dislike contests very much. However, speaking from an
organizational viewpoint I feel they are of value in that they offer
a forum in which performers can display their acts. While I.B.M.
offers a chance for exposure, the DMS contests with the Vegas site
offer exposure of potential great value. A largely underutilized
benefit of contests could be the opportunity for expert critique of
developing acts. I have tried to advance the idea of videotaping
contest acts for review by a panel of recognized experts. The
contestant could either sit in on the review of their act or get a
taped or written citique. While such a review done within the con-
text of judging would offer savings of time and effort, I feel that
it might better be done outside the judging to permit as much
flexibility as possible. In fact, such tapings could be done without
having any contest at all. However, within a convention it would
probably be necessary to offer the performances within the structure
of an event of some sort. These things offer value. However, I very
much agree with you in disliking the competitive aspects of contests.

accomodate different expressions of the art form. We are able to point
to those whose talent has been recognized through contests as well as
those who have chosen not to.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

I find it interesting that despite such intentions (making one's own
religion dominant) there are vestigial forms that remain. It is my
understanding that December 25th, for example, was overlaid with
Christmas largely because the Christians could not get rid of the
celebrations on that date.

Halloween has successfully survived a couple of thousand years of
attempted repression even though the former celebrants were completely
eliminated. Sadly enough, it may be our own secular culture that
finally does it in.

You make a good point Wayne. I checked with Joe Selph on how many
spaces were available and he told me maximum of 100. The room that we
will be in at UCLA is a choir room so seating is in a half round
configuration and stair stepped so you can see good from just about
anywhere. The room is the same room the Johnny Ace Palmer lectured in
on THE-DAY-MAGIC if that helps. Joe told me to tell you that it will be
kind of like being at the Parlour at the Castle but with better
visibility. Hope this helps.

OK, here's the cure - at least as far as Southern California is
concerned - summer is our most miserable season. It is HOT (can be up

tourists, many of whom only Max can communicate with.

Creativity will never be throttled in those that think. The basic
idea for the Mandatory Section of the competition is to test the

is now there is no "test of creativity" as such. Some enter the
competitions with only the standard old stuff thinking it will do.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

Actually, raw taro root (the source of poi) IS poisonous! It is only
if it is properly prepared that it is considered safe to eat. Those
who have not acquired the taste for it (a group that includes nearly
everybody except those who were raised on the stuff) tend to regard it
as poison anyway.

In a similar manner, I noticed something at the Greek resturant the
other day - the "house wine" was NOT Retsina.

One of the things that has always interested me, perhaps connected with
Shamanism, is the way that early cultures learned to take foods that,
in their raw or unprocessed state, were poisonous and to turn them into
edible items. Poi is an example, as are cashew nuts. The safe
preparation of some of these items and the use of some of them in
magical rites probably increased the power of the Shaman - very closely
related to contemporary "death defying" feats.

I'm not a town boy though I love LA and have been coming out since
I was in the movies a decade ago. I almost moved to newport beach in
1982 but since have become more immersed in country living. Two years
ago we almost bought a small ranch in the Santa Rosa area up on
Clear Lake. Also investigated Maui but cost too much bux. You know
my main thing is hanging out with the boys and having laughs and
stimulating conversation and work. I can do what I do from anywhere
there is a phone, electricity, etc. Am in limbo for a few more days
at least.

kraborg is the site of the 2nd hospitol in eng colonies here because
of the Coole Springs and healing MUD. I formed a corp five years ago
Coole Springs of maryland Water Bottling Co. Inc of which I am the
pres, my partner in music biz the vp, my mom tres and Glo sec. We
have had interest from several comps but Perrier has almost made the
big jump having gone so far as design bottle, etc. We'll have to see
what happens. It's been a long drawn out process and a lonely and
frustrating experience. Much of life has passed me by over past few
and we've been plagued by problems of living in a 200+ year old house
like NO HEAT last winter and it's coming at us again. Ask pete and
dave what it's like to take a shower here. Brrrr. If it hadn't been
for magic and my friends on MAGIC! I'd have gone completely nuts.
Having this link to all you guys here has given me much to look
4ward to. We're now totally against the wall and if the springs don't
work out we'll have to sell out. At any rate, whatever transpires
will be a positive thing.

Re: PHONE BILLZ

Yo--

To all in the Los Angeles area, especially to those served by Pacific
Bell. I was talking to the phone company the other day, and they
signed me up for a new plan which is going to work wonders with my
MAGIC! calls (pun there, didya catch it?).

MAGIC! is a Zone 2 call for pretty much anyone in L.A.-proper --
meaning it's not a charge-less local call, it's sort of a very cheap
toll call, broken out separately on your bill.

Anyway, PacBell offers a calling option. It goes something like this
-- you'll have to call for more details, as I'm sure I'm getting some
of this wrong:

For a minimum of 6.50 a month, you get $8 worth of credits for Zone 2
and 3 calls. Also, you get 25% off all Zone 2 and 3 calls. Now this
is definitely a great deal for anyone who makes more than 6.50 worth of
calls to MAGIC! who also has PacBell... I'm not sure if there are time
restrictions on some of the benefits -- like the 25% might only be
after 5p, or something like that.

But, if you have PacBell, definitely call! It's saving me money
already! Mention my name! If enough people sign up, I get a free
color TV! Just kidding!

Yes, there is a small sizzle and you have a good suggestion there. A

in one week mine got borrowed about 4 times. The last guy didn't look

Re: PHONE BILLZ

Check your long distance carrier for in-state deals -- there are ALWAYS
plans for the frequent caller that they don't tell you about. Sprint
has SprintPlus, and MCI, which I just moved to, has the "friends and
family" discount -- 25% off if you're both MCI customers (now is that
a gimmick or WHAT). I don't, however, know if MAGIC! would qualify
with MCI as a family or friend, even if the MAGIC! number is hooked to
MCI. I know if I were running things, I would let it qualify as both.

You know, that would be an attention getting effect if you could vanish
the cigarette in a flash of flash paper. I haven't yet used the cig
pull and I don't use flash paper so this idea is just a guess...
If you had the bottom of the pull drilled so that a third or half of it
could expose the ash it might be enough to set of a piece of flash
paper hidden in the palm simultaneously letting the pull fly up your
asbestos sleeve. Gone in a flash- I like that.

No, I do not feel that Jeff McBride is bringing new methods to magic;
I feel he is bringing new _concepts_ to magic, and new stylistic
approaches. Get the difference?

And no, I do not attach any significance to the fact that at least he
was nominated. This same group of magicalumpen passed over nominating
Tommy Wonder from the same year's list of performers.

Sort of dead, Jerry -- sorry. As in not a living art form. As in not
something that's living and breathing and changing. Yeah, I know
you're ready to stuff yourself down my throat -- wbut hold on. I'm
not saying that there aren't wonderful performances being given every
day, and I'm not even saying that there aren't any new "classical"
pieces being composed -- what I am saying is that 99.999% of the fielf
is involved with reinterpreting old works -- which in my eye means it's
dead as an art form. Classical composition, that is. Classical
reinterpreation is newly healthy, due to the CD.

If I had enuff (and it may happen, yet) I will found a magicians

be the benevolent dicktater and let in only whom I want. It will be

sometime back and it is still cooking. Last fyear I located a great
spot on 90 acres but did not have the ghidas to do it then. There
will be no rules other than gentlemanly and gentlewomanly conduct.
You build your own house, etc. Power will be provided via wind and
sun and telephone via satellite. Burton The Bizarre will be appointed
first minister of finance and David Lichtman (who probably won't want
to leave Arleta) will be director of communications. Pete Biro will
be first Prime Minister. Others will be invited and you can probably
guess who they might be (some are online here). Is this an illusion?

In most cases I would tend to agree that the originator does the best

Re: CONTEST.TXT

My position is that magicians don't think about magic 100% of the
time. Granted, that the more you are into magic, the more you think
about it, constantly visualizing and refining. Some of the best
performers rely upon the thoughts, ideas, and inventions of others
to use in their art; performing is an art as may well be invention
as well as thought. Art exists on all levels, though if a man builds
a spider web (some may call this art) it is merely an imitation of
nature. The question becomes, Is entertainment an art or merely a
skill?

In the art vs. skill department, you've moved to something I've been

Re: CONTESTS

Both Bill Wells and Scott Wells have sent along their views
on the close-up contest situation, and what they pass along is
very interesting. In particular, Scott Wells' article is extremely
enlightening, but possibly not in the way that Scott intended.
I guess that I need to reemphasize my main reason for
feeling that the close-up contests need to be revamped: I would
like to see the young men and women who have the time, the energy,
the creativity, and the desire to compete in contests apply their
energies in such a way that close-up magic moves forward. Scott
Wells says that "the notion of making the contest practical
inhibits creativity". How silly. In all endeavours, the greatest
test of creativity is developing quality material which fits the
stringent requirements of real life. I could write the most
beautiful music in the world, but if it takes 1000 performers to
play it will it ever get performed - no.
Scott feels that one of the purposes of the IBM should be "to
foster the education of magicians". What could be more educational
than to structure the contests so that they reflect real life?
Most of us who do magic professionally began as hobbyists. For the
most part our audiences were long suffering friends or members of
magic clubs, neither of which prepares us for what we are going to
face when we hit a real life audience. Scott mentions something
which I have long felt to be true: an audience of magicians
responds most enthusiastically to tricks that they can figure out
and can fantasize doing. "Wow", says the crowd, "I could have
pulled that big letter A out from behind the table, and I could
have lifted up that goldfish bowl from behind the table, and I
could produce two birds from my lap! These guys are great!!"
Magicians respond the least to that which really fools them,
because they are far too busy trying to figure out the method then
to applaud.
Scott also mentions that the Gold Cups were awarded because
of a decision made by the FISM judging committee. This has to be
the worst reason for awarding a prize that I have ever heard of,
and if I were Scott, I would have kept this bit of information to
myself. Reading how the acts are judged I can see that I would
make a very ineffective judge, since I can imagine that most of my
score sheets would be tossed out on one end or the other.
There also seems to be some confusion as to what I feel the
performers should be doing in their acts. I don't think I ever
said that we should "disqualify those contestants who limit their
acts to sleight of hand". I don't care what a guy does in his act,
only that the act not rely on the artificial performance
conditions found in close-up contests. Scott asks if the floating
light bulb is non-commercial. Of course it is commercial and
practical, if you are doing a full evening show. Although it is a
trick which requires set up time, it is do-able within the real
life performing situation of a stage magic show. Is it practical
for someone to do in the stage contest, or close-up? Not with the
methods that we have developed so far.
Scott also feels that requiring contestants to send in a
videotape of their acts would limit the number of contestants, and
I say "Right ON". Come on gang, nobody can watch 25 guys in a row
do close-up magic, especially when 20 of them have absolutely
nothing new to offer and are only slightly above average in
ability. A contest should be the showcase for the best performers
to display their abilities, not an arena for guys who simply want
to do their thing in front of a captive audience.
I neglected to mention in my first article that there is
growing dissatisfaction among non-American magicians concerning
the close-up contests. I had conversations with quite a few of our
foreign visitors at Baltimore and all seemed to ask why the
contest continues in the direction it has been going. If the only
reason for continuing on the present course is "That's the way
we've always done it", then that is a poor reason indeed. If the
reason we continue is "That's what magicians like to see" then let
us change the name of the award to "The Gold Cups for Doing Tricks
that Magicians Like to See". I love close-up magic, and in some
small way I'm trying to stir up the creative juices and move
things forward. Revamping the contests can be a step in that
direction.

I was the cop for a while. Then, after they moved the storyline to Los

Government Agent, lotsa silly stuff. I also did many of the audience
warm-ups in those days for several of the Paramount sitcoms.

YOw... lots to think about here... you have clarified a lot too.
I think if a close up worker (in real life) wanted to do the floating
light bulb at a table in a restaurant... the real pro would devise
a way. One might float the candle flame for a thought... hmmmmm
Some of what you say relates to the Ninja on stage at FISM. The
audience didn't know what he did because they had not seen any of
it before. They didn't know when to applaud... they were fooled
throughout.
Same thing with Sylvester the Jester. He did EFFECTS no one had
ever seen before... so they sat there not knowing when or how to
react.
I firmly believe there will be a change. I hope what you, and others
are writing will get to the powers that be.
If nothing else the judging panel can (and I hope will be) changed
to include pro, contemporary, close up people that KNOW what is
happening.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

In ART there can be NO RULES. While the use of rules can increase def
inition, they ultimately destroy the intent which has to be the
freedom of expression. You are currently walking a fine line and
perhaps you should define your reasons for starting MAGIC!. Is it a
Magic BBS or a Magicians' BBS? While messages do appear not seeming
to relate in any way to magic, I have to defend their presence
because I wish the same freedom to be afforded to me. My impressions
of MAGIC! are individual and I relate it to a group of individuals
bound by a profound intrest in the conjuring arts sitting around
my mali clad card table in my office discussing and cussing; laffin
and scratchin (as the great one puts it) and ultimately getting some
work done. A difficult question for sure. You know I am committed to
helping you with the system and have appreciated your allowing me

If I recall, Rocco Silano uses flashpaper wrapped around the cigarett
and fastens it with a small piece of tape. Retracting the lit end to
touch the paper lights it. I'm not sure what comes next, presumably
a vanish, but with the lit end exposed I don't think he "pulled" it.

Eugene Burger has a good pull method in "The Performance of Magic"

Tabby (aka etc.) is an idealized projection of what each of us would

soul of this BBS. A reasonable facsimile can sometime be seen

Re: CONTESTS

Jerry, I suspect that youare at least partially correct. I don't
think all the judges come from the local ring. We try to get the
room hosts for the close up show from the local ring, but I suspect
you overheard how judges are gotten regardless of whether this
particular judge was a local or not. I don't know who the judges
were in Baltimore, although I believe Scott Wells did say he was one
and may have uploaded some thoughts on the subject.
Clearly, the selection of judges is one of the critical areas for
improvement in magic contests.
