Re: CONTEST.TXT
Sorry Pete...you missed on this one! The entire project was done by
a full time professional magician. He brought in the the IBM and SAM
presidents and Nabisco paid both organizations to mail the info to
their members and also made a donation to the endowment and
development funds of each organization. The only real involvement of
the organizations was to mail out the info to their members. I also
fail to see what one being an amateur or professional magician
necessarily has to do what marketing concepts and the involvement of
magic or magicians in those concepts. I grow weary of the constant
misuse of amateur to indicate incompetence and professional to
indicate competence. There are simply far too many exceptions to
both sides of this "definition" for it to hold much validity.

Yep. So did Paul Daniels. The Napoleons' piece was no longer a
legitimate Guinness record almost as soon as it came into existence.
Fortunately, of course, that fact had nothing to do with the value of
the piece as entertainment. When we booked them on "Incredible Sunday"
we were very careful with our wording in the intro, so that it sounded
like they were going for a new world record but that's not what was
actually being said.

Another interesting dimension! One I had noted before - if magic is

Re: CONTEST.TXT
There is a pragmatic problem that I'm trying to solve and that is the
reason for my concern. If the message base grows as large and as fast
as it seems to be doing, then 1) people have trouble keeping up, and 2)
the Sysop has to put the files together every couple of days, and 3)
The allocated drive space fills up.
So I try to keep it focused on magic, not because I want to, but
because it seems to get unweildy otherwise.
I agree, in an ideal system, there would be NO constraints of this
sort. Maybe I'd better try to get a grant from the NEA?

Re: CONTESTS
Yep. Far as I'm concerned, LIFE is a series of contests. At one time
I thought that academe was sheltered from same, so I spent five years
there. Far as I can tell, the politics in academe make those in magic
look tiny! And, of course, there was the "tenure" contest. With the
votes only belonging to those who already had tenure and who wanted to
see no-one else get it. In my fifth year at one university I got a
letter from the Chairman of the committee - it read, in part, "since
this is your fifth year, you have no choice but to apply." (The rule
is, if you don't get tenured in your fifth year you are out). I read
the letter a couple of times and then thought "HELL, YES, I HAVE A
CHOICE!" I quit! Went to a better job (a univeristy research position
with the "clout" of a dean) at a better school.

Okay, your view is acknowledged. In my view, they're not.
Mind you, I'm not making a negative comment about demming, inventing,
and/or lecturing. I have done all of these, and say so without shame...
But they are not the same as actual performing. The concept is quite
different, and the person's frame of reference is also different.
Performing involves a contract of sorts between performer and audience
that does not exist in the same way across a magic counter or in a
lecture hall. Different contract, different gig.

Re: INVENTIONS - GENERAL
I was reading last night and came across this quote from David
Copperfield in Illusion Systems Book Four by Paul Osborne in a forward.
Given our recent discussions on magical entertainment and music I
thought it quite appropriate.
.
"Magic will continue to grow in popularity as long as we all continue
to do good work. Like any art form we need leadership, collaboration
and innovation. Music is popular because there are so many artists
creating new material. They aren't so likely to limit themselves to
whats been done before. Rules have held art forms back. If the
musicians of today had the limitations that magicians place on
themselves, we wouldn't have the innovative and socially significant
works from the likes of the Beatles, Phil Collins or Billy Joel. Music
wouldn't be so popular, making such a lasting mark and generating so
much excitement.
.
As magicians, we need to search for new principles, new ways of
performing and new ways to amaze and entertain. Magic has come a long
way and it has a long way to go. I'm excited about its future."

The only problem with getting a grant from anybody is that you could
not be selective re: membership. It must remain private. I'm wonder-

cut down on the numbers somewhat and still provide some way for you

Re: CONTEST.TXT
Unfortunately, due to the cost of putting on a good classical program
as well as the dwindling sophistication of today's younger audiences,
classical music is being pushed even further into the background, back
to that old position of appealing to only a limited audience and more
for snob appeal than for true appreciation. The general audience's
attention span today is a whole lot shorter than it used to be, and the
lack of proper musical training as well as the deluge of quick, fast
music videos with their musical instant gratification has taken its
toll on the potential young listeners. How many fifteen year-olds do
you know who would rather sit through Vivaldi han Madonna? (Am I
getting preachy? Bad habit, sorry)

Re: CONTEST.TXT
More than a thought, Tabb. In the past 18-months or so, MAGIC! has
become a meeting ground that has considerable impact on magic. And
we've done some pretty spectacular things. Just in the past few months
we were the first magic media to feature a picture of a magic trick
being performed in space and provided "live" coverage of four major
conventions.
But we are also outgrowing our resources. To continue at the rate that
the communications support, the message base, and the other parts of
MAGIC! are growing we need new hardware and increased phone line
support.
We've had some generous contributors that have helped a great deal, you
are a prime example of someone who has done that, but we do need to put
MAGIC! on a more secure footing.
I have been looking into setting MAGIC! up as a non-profit foundation,
but even the investigation takes many dollars and lots of time.
In short, you are right - we need to move to a subscription basis; a
move I have attempted to avoid for as long as possible, but one which
is now necessary.
Within the next few days I'll be posting an official announcement. In
the meanwhile, I'd appreciate the comments of the members on this.

I built a killer reed switch turner on and off device using a
soda straw filled with motor oil. A rope magnet in the oil slowly
moved when the straw tipped up. It was inside a jumbo deck of cards
and you could time the delay by holding deck upside down for, say
5 seconds. When you put the deck in the houlette right side up
the switch would go on in five seconds and the motor would run,
and the card would rise.
I made one killer version and gave it to Fred Kaps... he used it
and loved it. The other, the mule, I still have, but has been
torn apart for revisions.
Kaps hated radio controlled card rises because they were so
inconsitant and unreliable.

I don't think entertainment is an art OR a skill -- I think it's a
reaction by a particular audience. Some audiences are entertained by
some acts, others not. Perhaps there should be a word for "ATTEMPTED
ENTERTAINMENT"...

If you don't actively encourage certain types of activities they tend
to go away. People enter contests because within magic some importance
is attached to them; if it wasn't, they might bend their efforts toward
creating acts that can perform in, and be appreciated by, the real
world.

Actually, both opera and ballet are more healthy than classical music,
if you think about it -- ballet more so. New ballets are agreesively
written and choreographed, and people are doing interesting work with
opera, though sometimes the form is warped beyond recognition. But you
tell me where there's a lot or original, healthy classical music being
composed and performed, and I'll be surprised. Sure there's some, and
a lot of them are American 20th century -- but no one cares. Except fo
r Bernstein.

I'm not sure I understand why it is so important that people create
acts for the "real world." Doesn't sound like a requirement of art to
me.
The "real world" is that there is a place for performance of carefully
created acts in front of the cognoscente and even in front of the
magiclumpen. Why should this be any less of an art form? Does all art
have to be appreciated by "the masses" in order to be art?

Just because something is old doesn't mean that it is bad. Even if
classical music were a frozen art form, would that somehow diminish its
quality? Would the same apply to old buildings? Should we tear down
the Louvre and build a more modern building in its place just because
it has been there too long?
There is a lot of modern magic that I like, along with a lot that I
think is just contemporary trash. And I still like to see classics of
magic performed well.

Both of Hans Moretti's sons do extended versions of the crossbow act.
The former, who uses the name Hans Pantar, is featured in the show at
Bally's in Las Vegas. A tape of part of his act exists on the Harry
Anderson sideshow special that aired on network a few years ago. The
younger son, Peter, did the act at the Den Haag FISM, and it's on one
of the NHK specials from that convention. If you like I'll try to dig
up my copy of the latter, and dub it for you. (Your offer to pay a

I tried dunking the donut. Got arrested for attempting to imitate a

walked off and forgot it, it would howl.

======================================================================
. BIDDING FAREWELL TO THE WATTLES MANSION .
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, the August meeting will be our last meeting at the
historic Wattles Mansion in Hollywood. Our contract has expired and it
was our joint decision not to renew. From our standpoint, we have
honestly outgrown the facilities. We are attracting record numbers of
members every month. From Wattles standpoint, it would be difficult
for us to stay within their curfew, aside from the fact that they have
to turn down other clients who would like to use the mansion for their
events (i.e. paying clients!!).
So, beginning with the September meeting, we will be moving to a new
location. Details will be announced in the September newsletter. The
Board of Directors is making every effort to keep us in the Hollywood
area and welcomes any suggestions you may have. We are looking for a
facility that has a small stage and can hold up to 100 people. These
types of locations are few and far between and often command fees in
excess of $150.00 per month.
If you can be of any help, please contact Joe Selph at (213) 660-2998.
======================================================================
. SPECIAL LECTURE SERIES CONTINUES
----------------------------------------------------------------------
IBM Ring 21 is proud to announce an exclusive Los Angeles appearance
by the finest coin manipulator of modern times, Mr. David Roth. This
four hour seminar will be presented on Saturday August 10, 1991 at
UCLA's Schoenberg Hall in Room 1325. The seminar will get underway at
10:00 am with an hour break for lunch at Noon. David has not lectured
in the Los Angeles area in quite a few years and we are happy to able
to sponsor his ONLY Los Angeles appearance. In addition to L.A., he
will be appearing in San Diego and Sacramento.
His seminar will be unique in that we are offering amphitheater style
seating so there will be no bad seats! We will also have a large video
projection screen for extreme close-ups for excellent viewing! This
seminar is open to all magicians in the Los Angeles area on a first
come, first served basis! The fee is $25.00 per person in advance and
$35.00 per person at the door!
For reservation, contact Joe Selph at (213) 660-2998.
======================================================================
. SEPTEMBER MEETING
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Our September meeting will feature our Annual Swap Meet. Now is the
time to dig through those closets and get rid of those magical items
that you aren't using. Tables will be available to current Ring 21
members at no charge. Non-members are welcome to sell their wares for
a small fee. If you would like to participate, please contact Joe
Selph.
======================================================================
. POOF, TOO! SHOW JUST AROUND THE CORNER
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Once again, Ring 21 will be joining forces with the I.A.M. and the
Oddfellows to produce the 5th ANNUAL POOF, TOO! in Hermosa Beach on
Saturday October 19, 1991. According to the "Head Honcho", Dennis
Forel, this year's lineup includes VICTOR & DIAMOND, JACK COREY, and
DOUG & LINDA MALLOY. Last years show was a sell-out and raised several
hundred dollars for each of the sponsoring organizations. Dennis is
still scouting for additional talent for the show and said that
rehearsals will be held the night before on Friday October 18, 1991.
We are looking forward to participating again this year. The Hermosa
Beach Theater is located just south of Los Angeles and is a short trip
down the Harbor Freeway. Details about the sale of tickets will be
announced at a later date.

Forwarded to me by Kent Cummins (one Heck of a guy!) - From the July

Power. It seems that endurance athletes (marathon runners and the
like) are getting into Pierogi as a carbo-loading food! The
carbohydrate content is similar to pasta, with less fat. The leading

Re: BEEN READING AGAIN
I have been doing some reading again in The Sphinx from the 1940s
looking for a reference to the _First Modern Magic Lecture_ since
Max posed the question some months ago and ran across some
information that relates to discussions of late.
.
It seems that Charles "Think-A-Drink" Hoffman decided to protect
his ideas, act, name of act, etc by Copyright and Trademark. When
the copycats showed up at his door and began to "do" the _think-
a-drink_ act, Hoffman asked them to stop. Well, they didn't and
he TOOK THEM TO COURT and won an injunction against the copiers
plus a damages cash settlement.
.
This case establishes a legal precedent and a copy of the
injunction can be found in the May 1943 The Sphinx just in case
you want to take a look (for precedents sake).
.
So you see, it has been done. Hoffman won.
.
I see where Ron Allessi got that great cover for his
rare/used/etc catalog. From 1944 Magic Calendar published by The
Sphinx. It was a gift to it's readers allowing them to add their
advertising copy and distribute it for adv purposes. Interesting.
.
Well, before I get acused of living too far in the past again, I
think I'll make my exit.

Okay, look - First of all, you (& Wayne) are not exactly John Q.
Public. Second of all, your little guy(s) is not being raised by John
Q. Public. You are obviously well-educated and somewhat worldly; you
are actively involved in the arts. Among other things, this doesn't
make your experience with classical music even remotely similar to that
of mainstream America. Thirdly, your little guy is at that wonderful
period in life when he's free to experiment & form opinions without
worrying what his friends will say or think. The point I'm trying to
make is that the arts are no longer stressed as strongly to teenagers
and interest in preserving the arts is dwindling. Yes, there are great
pockets of people like you (&, I'm assuming, like Wayne) where children
will be encouraged to learn more about the foundations of the arts. But
these pockets are sadly few. The majority of people in this country
have never heard a live concert or seen live theatre or been in an art
museum, with the exception of elementary school field trips. And,
believe it or not, a majority of people in this country do not own a
classical recording.
Yes, in the '20's people probably did think classics were dead - as a
result, classics didn't really come back with great strength until the
60's & 70's (with a brief rise to the surface in the 40's). For the
most part, they were kept alive in those little "pockets" I mentioned
earlier.
And no, sorry, I don't think we'll be hearing Madonna on Muzak in 100
years. The Beatles, yes, Michael Jackson, maybe, Madonna, I doubt. DoI
still have special status?

Cindy -
My 2-1/2 years olds FAVORITE video is the
Carreras-Domingo-Pavarotti-Meta concert. He went wild over
the Pavarotti in the Park concert on television last night and demanded
to see the video tonite. Tomorrow evening we plan to take him to the
Hollywood Bowl for the second time and you can't believe how excited he
was tonite when we told him about it.
Between home and school he is exposed to a wide range of music and he
seems to particularly enjoy some of the classics. Maybe his tastes
will change later, but right now he's definitely into classics.

In addition to the things you mentioned, it is a sadly disappointing
fact that MORE THAN HALF of the adults in this country have NEVER read
an entire book.
But my neighbor next door is an electric meter checker for the
Department of Water and Power - not exactly a glitzy member of the
intelligentsia - and last night his whole family trooped off to the
Hollywood Bowl.
The arts have basically ALWAYS been a minority interest, particularly
in this country. We are one of the first generations that can easily
go to concerts (classical or rock), that can go down to the store and
buy recordings, and that can listen to music by turning on a radio.
We are also one of the first generations to be able to flip a switch
and have a magician like David Copperfield walk into our living rooms
and do miracles.

If you are planning on staying a LOT closer to the receiver than 200
feet and you aren't planning on singing, then you certainly can't beat
the price. There are units on the market that are a LOT better, but
they also cost a LOT more - like a couple of times an order of
magnitude more! Try it out in the store and see what you think.
They'll say "but we've got a lot of electronics in here" and you say "I
have a lot of electronics on stage." See if it works for you before
you buy it. Also, if you are going to be plugging into sound systems
on different stages, make sure you check out the section of the store
that has the various adapters and stock up on some of the common ones.

Honestly forget how the threat started, but I THINK my point was this
-- that we don't want magic to become like Classical music, because we
would be stuck endlessly reinterpreting the classics. This might or
might not have arisen from discussion of competition testing people's
performance of the classics... That an art that rewarded
reinterpretation over originality, facility over creativity, was
doomed to simper and die.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
Yeah, but Classical is a special case -- reinterpretation is valued so
much so over modern composition that it goes way beyond the way of most
things -- that we're constantly repeating, redoing, the same old
stories and such... For instance, I've had the old "There are seven
basic stories" line plugged into me forever. I have a book that claims
to break all stories down into one of 32 catagories. But I never felt
that writing, or storytelling was really burdened by this, and I don't
think you could make a realy convincing argument that modern literature
and film and theatre and all those are SIMPLY retelling those same old
stories. I take that back -- ou oud maketh agument, but I
wouldn't buy it -- and it's counterintuituve for most, I believe. Yes,
there is the element of commonality to all these things, but there's a
big difference between writing a love story, and calling the author a
copycat because a love story's been done before -- and doing a REMAKE
of an old movie. They're very different. And Classical music is 99%
remakes.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
Shoot me if you will, but I don't happen to think this is such a bad
idea. If such franchises were thoughtfully, creatively, responsibly
run, they might have the result of spreading magic to a larger segment
of the population, which, contrary to the opinions of many right here,
would be healthier for the art as a whole. Sure, it would create for
hacks and mindless trick-buyers, but by definition it would also create
more geniuses in the field. The interest would perpetuate the field,
creating more of an audiece for magic, as well as creating a larger
economy for the marketed and published effects of those who wished to
reward their creativity in that way...
So let's no instantly poo-poo the idea. Responsibly run, I think it
would be a dang healthy thing. A few more people might know how an Egg
Bag works, but isn't this worth it if just a handful of Micheal
Ammar's, Max Mavens, or Tommy Wonders are created? (Michael Close,
Daryl, the list goes on...)

Just like in music, I think there is room in magic for a wide variety
of forms of expression. Personally, I find a lot of what pretends to
be contemporary magic is just junk. Then again, there are some pretty
horrible examples of the performance of classic magic that could be
identified.
The point is that there is NO NEED for an either/or situation. There
is plenty of room for both, and plenty of reason to encourage both, in

I located the video of Peter Moretti & Sonya ("The Super-Tells") from
the 1988 FISM, so I'll dub their segment for you and send it off in the
next day or so.
An amusing anecdote: I directed and MC'd that gala. Peter was
concerned with the time-consuming set-up on his final piece, which
requires several crossbows to be carefully set; he asked, therefore,
that I do a voice-over commentary to help set the mood and cover the
necessary time.
When that time came, I moved out from the wings to my microphone,
and began this rather serious voice-over... only to discover that the
mike was not on. So, I called back into the wings to get them to turn
it on. I began again; no go, so another yell into the wings. This went
on for a while, until they finally turned the mike on and I went into
the ad lib commentary.
As the mike was turned off, the audience did not hear these
exchanges. _However_, the NHK microphones picked up everything. So,
when you watch the tape you'll hear me in the background saying
something like, "Ladies and gentlemen, in the -- Hey! Turn this mike
on! ...Ladies and -- Hey!! Hey!!!" and so on.

Hi Gary! Glad you finally made it out to the Castle, only sorry I
wasn't there to see what the guys thought of your stuff! Do you still
have the photo of Vernon with the footprint on his face?!
Following FISM, Hannah and I drove to Italy to spend a week in
Florence. Driving in Italy means taking you own life into your
hands...
One thing interesting about going through so many museums in such a
short period of time, you begin to notice the 'zombies' of the art
world. Around the 15th century, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE
portrayed the Holy Family - Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus. There
were dozens of family paintings, all done during one generation, and
many times, the great artists would do three or four different poses of
this same image.
Then you entered the Pieta' era, where everyone portrayed the death of
Christ. Not just one or two, but again - EVERYONE. Di Vinci,
Michelangelo, Raphael, etc... Artists back then seemed to revolve
around singular themes, beating them to death.
Anyway, go off on a tangent - say hello to Ann, and I'll see you when
I get back up that way. I had planned on visiting my family this
month, back in Bluefield, but some unexpected projects came together
that will postpone that for months. Until later...

Yeah! Right on Tabman!! I would also add that to a degree, the
better rounded the performer the better he is able to entertain

the audience. One of magic's problems may be its incestuous nature
and the apparently poor ability of magicians to relate to
reality. Ask Pete what book Leno was reading in the dressing room

Actually, I am not sure I have ever met the man. Howsomever, don't
worry about his getting swell headed. If that happened he wouldn't

do believe he would be reluctant to part with either the chapeau or
the coiffure. Ego is not one of his obvious features.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
Anyone who has done any BBSing knows that subscriptions to boards in
some form have become almost a necessity. I think the bigger
question for you might be if you have two levels of users, one being
subscriptors that get most of the nodes and the other being non
subscriptors that have to call a single line and maybe wait for the
line to be free or they might only have access to certain features of
the board. I certainly will not object to a subscription fee for
this board, althought I only belong to one other BBS for which I pay
a fee. Have you considered adding a R S Y or read only your mail
feature to MAGIC! in order to reduce time and messages?

I never said franchise magish shops were a bad idea, but if there
were millions of magicians all knowing how to do the same stuff
after a short period of time there would be nobody for all these
franchise magicians to create their illusions for and the unfortunate
franchise holders would possibly see a real decline in their business
I've seen small shops in malls open with a booming kid trade and
then six months or a year later they were gone because once the kids
had bought all the low cost stuff there was nothing new for them to
buy, or perhaps they'd aquired a new interest. I don't know, but
I think I'd put my money elsewhere looking at it strictly from a
business standpoint.

high z as it is cheaper to make, low z is for pro as it allows for

Re: WIRELESS MIKE SYSTEM
You didn't ask, but. Why can't you use a lavalier mike with a
trailing cord? I used to think I "had to have a wireless" but after
many, many failures, low quality, etc. I started to use a lavalier.
At first I thought the wire would get in the way, etc. But after
only a few uses the wire became totally forgotten, never had any
trouble with it and the sound quality was SO FAR SUPERIOR.
I used a SHURE clip that went around my neck (most others are too
noticable and not secure) that has a little clip, like a tie clip,
that keeps it in place. The few clips I have seen made by and sold
by Magic shops are usually NG and made from Mop Holders you find
in a hardware store.
I also have a bag with various adapters, male/female, RCA, etc.
so that I could link into nearly all amplifiers in the clubs.
However, after I put all this together nearly every place I worked
had a terrific system in place. Ninety percent of the mikes come
off the stand and will fit right into the SHURE clip.
Darwin Ortiz had a wireless system at his lecture in Baltimore. He
had the reciever/speaker about 12 feet away and he had trouble
with it. Feedback, funny sounds, etc.
Sheets had his wireless system at the comedy club show and he had
trouble with his. One other guy spent half an hour before the show
trying to get his to sound right.... enuf?

Guys like Bach, Papa H, etc were on the payroll. Don't you know
where the term (really!!) ROYALTY came from. Check it all out in
Russel Sanjek's 7 Vol History of the Music Business. They were
just hacking for the bread and if they didn't hack out some new
stuff, they got the hook. Lots of those guys were workers for big
churches, etc and had to come up with a new one every Sunday morning
to help get the money in the plate; or did they use a wheel barrow?

Re: WIRELESS MIKE SYSTEM
Donno, Pete - I've used both a wired mic and a wireless. With the wire
type I clip it to my belt with a small loop up to the holder. Still,
I wander a lot and, while you are right, it is easier than it looks, I
still have to sometimes pick up the cord and yank it when I move out
into the audience, or I end up with a loop left hanging off the stage,
or something like that that I feel doesn't look all that smooth.
The wirelesses do have the problems you mentioned, they can be useful
in some situations. One potential problem is that most of 'em,
especially the low price ones, operate in the 49-MegaHertz band and
only operate on a single channel. 49-Meg is also used by the headsets
that you guys used in Baltimore for the stage crew, sometimes by other
communications systems in the area, a few older cordless phones, etc.
Since most of the wireless units only have one channel, if there is
interferrence, you're stuck.

There is a similar system involving the UP/AP wires in radio and
television stations. There have been a few false alarms over the
years. In each case, the guys on duty have NEVER responded by
activating the public Emergency Broadcast System procedure. Nowhere,
not one place in the U.S. Instead, some have simply put on a long
album and gone home! Others have been known to quietly go to the
restroom and change their underwear.

You are right. It is not necessarily unfortunate. It all has its value
and place. It's just that when I see someone with great potential, that
I feel it is a pity when they cannot perform very well. It would be so
nice when someone with great ideas, would also be a great performer.
Wishfull thinking here on my part.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
I think that the two talents - creating and performing - are really
very different skills. Jim Steinmeyer, for example, says that he has
no desire to get up on a stage. And John Gaughan looks positively
terrified in front of an audience, unless an automaton or a creation of
his is speaking for him.
It is nice when the two skills coincide, but they don't have to.

Re: INVENTIONS - GENERAL
True from three points of view. 1) Kalamazoo has a News Years Fest and
last January several of the acts were magicians. The background music,
probably taped was poor quality (ie scratchy etc) and it really
detracted from the performance. 2) SOme one should teach these people
that you make a message with the music as well as all else and it
should fit. I do travel slide shows for fun too and Marilyn and I
spend considerable time and effort selecting the music / GL+3 to
match what we are saying or to convey a feeling ect. For example with
Bryce Canyon NP we use ABBA "I had a Dream" and Frank Mills "Music Box
Dancer" to highlight the dream like surreal atmosphere we felt. Too
oftem magic shows that use music use it as MUZAK to numb the mind.
Lastly is the metaphysical "music" we make when we perform and
sometimes I wonder whether performers look at that either.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
In the larger world of art, where there are perceived competencies, you
are correct. Magic, however, is generally thought of by laypersons as
a non-art, because of the level at which it is usually performed. I'm
not sure magic can at this point afford the luxury of self-amusement or
whatever.
The interesting thing is that many innovative performers exist out
there in the real world, and they usually are not fostered or
encouraged by magic clubs. Art does not have to be non-commercial by
definition.
