If you're defining classical music as "old", then of course none could
logically be being written -- but in fact a lot of symphonic work,
etc., is being done today. I am not sure what you mean by "it is all

Re: WIRELESS MIKE SYSTEM
I think you've convinced me. If I can't go first class it's not worth
it to get a cheaper wireless microphone. If you are going to have
people come up on stage would you want a microphone that you can have
them speak into when asking their name or whenever they are speaking in
the act? A lavaliere as I understand it i clipped to the lapel so if
a person mumbled his answer you would have to repeat it for the rest of
the audience. How does the lavaliere compare with those rings around
the neck that some performers stick the microphone into?

He is a public figure in a public predicament getting a lot of public

otherwise.
The basis of my comments are the accusations and his predicament, not
his innocence or guilt...that is for a courts to decide.

Thomas A. Edison was a great performer. My favorite performance of
his was when he called the press in to see his "latest" invention.
He had a table with wires running to a glass globe-like affair in
the center. When they all gathered close, he leaned over the bulb
and said, "HELLO?"
.
I use this often.

Unfortunately ALMOST all trials are done and over with before they
start LEGALLY by perception and that comes from the media coverage.
I have always advocated that the media coverage of a trial should
be printed AFTER THE TRIAL IS OVER WITH! Many will probably dis-
agree with me on that. But it is my opionion. And since it has to
do with magic (I was palming a card at the time) it is OK on this
board.

Re: WIRELESS MIKE SYSTEM
Rings around the neck. YECK, I have seen those. Trust me. Just go
into a professional music supply store and tell them you want the
SHURE BROS. mike clip. It is small, a chain goes around your neck,
the clip is almost not noticeable, has a spring clip (like a tie
clip) to hold it in place and the Mike goes in and out with ease.
If you need to interview someone you just lift it out, hold the
mike to the person, they speak, you put it back.
If you want to be ready for anything... you can purchase OTHER size
clips, etc. But 99-percent of the time the small SHURE BROS. will
do the job.
The other option is your own lavalier mike. You see these on
people doing TV, they clip on and again FOR GOOD SOUND YOU PAY A
LOT OF DOUGH!!!! But the problem with these is that you can't
let someone else talk into them without that person looking like
they are biting your neck. In some cases that would be OK.
A new development is a floor mike. The NHK (Public TV crew from
Japan at FISM) CREW had a mike laying on the floor. It was a funny
shape (almost a flattened Pyramid) and seemed to be doing the job.
I think Tabby knows what they were, you might ask him.
But, believe me, the working act needs only the clip and takes the
mike off the stand that is there FREE.
Another worry is IMPEDENCE. If you bring your own stuff in, some
are not balanced to the amplifiers. There are correcting devices,
but often you don't have the opportunity to experiment and test.
Hope this has given you a little insight and helps you to make the
right decision.
Again, if you keep running into lousy sound equipment, and have
the budget to bring your own SYSTEM in, fine. But don't try to
match part of your stuff to existing systems.

Yes, Wayne, I know Rubens is his real name -- but the coverage has been
about Pee Wee, as have the comments here. Given some of the
journalistic "standards" in this country, I am not sure that taking
them as moral arbiters is the most constructive thing to do. My point
specifically addressed the question of his already assumed guilt by the
media.
Ah, but it happens all the time -- Lizzie Borden WAS acquitted, but

Once read a book about a guy who failed to climb Mt. Everest and who
went into a funk and remained in the Sherpa village. He missed two
things - reading material and a Western toilet. He constructed a
Western style outhouse for himself and one day a Sherpa told him about
a cache of books left from previous expeditions. He eagerly seized on
this and used the books for two purposes. The outstanding line was,
"Spring came, and I was halfway through War and Peace..." I can't
remember the author's name, but Morrison comes to mind, maybe.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
Thanks for your input, Cindy. The "Read only your mail" that Wells was
suggesting would be an option, not a requirement. Some systems deal
with an expanding message base in a variety of ways. A couple of
months ago I suggested the possbility of going to multiple sections.
That only works if there are people who choose not to read some
sections, otherwise you are back where you started. Not one MAGIC!
member could identify a section that he or she would turn off.
By the way, on MAGIC!, if we did have sections, there is no need to
read all the messages in one section, then change sections like there
are on some systems. All the sections that the individual is signed up
for still appear seamlessly.

My money, as well. I wasn't accusing you or knee-jerkdom, but I felt
there was some derision on the board in general. I erely want to
point out it's not an obviously horrible idea, in my opinion. Also,
the notion of everyone knowing everyone else's tricks would not happen
-- only so many people, percentage-wise, are ever going to be
interested enough in magic as to go out and study it. More magic shops
would get us CLOSER to that percentage. I intuit that we're nowhere
near saturation... In terms of the magic shop that lost it's juice
after the first six months, I think this kind of thing can be avoided
if it is well run. What little I know of Brad Burt's operation, I see
heplaces heavy emphasis on classes -- this engenders a more serious
interest than that which would be surrendered after six months.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
I certainly agree that there are many innovative performers who choose
not to involve themselves in magic clubs, etc. And that may be sad, in
that it speaks poorly about the value of associations within magic. On
the other hand, it is entirely within someone's rights not to be
involved in associations.
Since I don't think there is _a_ "magic," I don't think that it is
reasonable to deny any individual the "luxury of self-amusement or
whatever." I think that any decision on when to perform, what to
perform, or who to perform in front of (if choosing to perform at all)
is very much up to the individual.
As to magic being a non-art in the minds of laypersons, I am aware of
no published evidence to support that statement. Some time ago I
suggested that a survey of public attitudes toward magic might be
something worth doing. I truly don't think we have any real idea of
what the public perception of magic is.

I know what you mean. I had a box at the Hoolywood Bowl on Friday

consisted of Florence Henderson and Anthony Newlly - Eccch. Switched

to play what sells. The weekend Bowl concerts became too popsie
for my tastes.
.
Now have seasons tickets to Irvine Meadows 'classic' series which
is pretty good. Only problem is that Orange County audiences treat
classical music, like jazz - they clap after each movement, and after
the solist finishes a riff - really throws the orchestra's timing off
but hey its better than nothin'.

Ah - this is a very interesting observation. If we only had some way
of determining the frame of 'collective' mind of a given audience
we could have a killer act every time. Everyone that has ever
performed in front of an audience knows the feeling of being right on
and other times the same material flops. We tend to feel that we were
at fault, when in fact it may have been the audience - sounds like a
good rationalization for poor performance.

I do a few PK things and have reasonable response. Major problem is
peoples perception of physics and what is really possible. If you do

ucers are well aware--we can believe that we're tiuring an unbuilt bu
ilding and interacting with the fixtures. We can believe that we're u
p in space manipulating a robot arm. We can interact with others inte
lligences (human and artificial) as part of VR conferencing. We can l
earn, play, communicate in cyberspace, accessible today with gloves a
nd goggles, but maube someday with holographic projection (just like
the Star Trek Holodeck).
The technology is crude and expensive, but improving daily. At some
point in the next few years, the tools that allow visual, audible, a
nd tactile feedback will be inexpensive and readily available. Input
devices, too, will be improved to make interactive virtual reality
easy and affordable. After that, it's a software problem".
.
Imagine in a few years MAGIC! could be the BBS on the planet where yo
u could dial in and have individual magic instruction with feedback
to the gloves you would wear, that would train your hands how to make
the moves correctly. Just think what that would do for contests !!
.
If you are interested I can send a copy of the 2 articles, they are
excellant. Give me your address if you want them, not too techy so if
anyone else wants them let me know.

I'm not interested in defining Classical music completely and utterly.
It's not just old, and it's not just symphonic -- movie soundtracks
are symphonic, but are not classical music. Javanese Gammelon music is
old, but is not classical... "It is all there is..." was an exaggerated
reference to my belief that endless reinterptration accounts for 99%
of the classical music market today. Yes, there are American Moderns
working in the field, but they are a tiny sliver of it.

The two skills (creating and performing) are quite different in nature.
(And, of course, the writing skill for a book is still another
different skill). I've done various mixes of the three and I find that
sometimes I prefer to be in the background and at other times I prefer
to be up front. There was a small effect that I published here on
MAGIC! some time ago. Stan Lake performed it at one of the MAGIC!
luncheons, and, frankly, I derived a lot of enjoyment out of watching
him do it.
Often we only perceive the skills of the performer. I would like to
see a greater appreciation for the skills of the creator.

I believe that magic IS perceived as a non-art in the minds of the
public, but not for the reason TA suggested -- that it had to do with
the leve of performances out there. (old argument is that it never
hurt other performing arts.) No, I think there's something
intrinsically threatening about the art, about being fooled.
As to how accurate our notions of the public's perceptions are -- who's
to say. Short of embracing ignorance (while might be noble, but is
not as interesting!), we can only grapple with our various theories,
suspicions and intuition -- the latter not something to be sneezed at.

Named after the creator of Murphy's law. One of the phone companies

I agree, Evan. Magic as an art is wide open. There are no boundries,
no restrictions. Unlike music which is destined to repeat the same

less - Magic can continue to grow and expand as a performer's and

Hey, I know it's been done, but do the cut and restored mic cord.
Cut it in mid sentence and feign silence. Keep feigning until it's
restored. It can't be that old a trick so somebody has to know who
started it. Drop by your local _pro sound_ shop and buy a few feet
of the popular types of mic rope in black and gray. Maybe one length
of blue and you're set. Use large set of wire dykes instead of
scissors. Wear goggles and heavy rubber gloves and get a funkenring
to shoot sparks when you cut it. A little smoke would be good too.
Send me my dollar when you use my routine and give me credit in the

franchised magic shops. It is, at least, for me.
My opinion is that there are too many magic shops with too much magic
made much too available to the casually curious. I've expressed this
opinion in the past. I would like to see a return to the second floor
magic shops with backrooms for the real stuff. I think there are too
many magic books being published and being made much too available to
the magic-dabbling Uncle Geeks.
The problem with magic today not that it's unavailable to the genuinely
interested, but that it's TOO available to the casually curious!
"Oh, yeah...I recommend Mike Weber's book, LIFESAVERS...it's right
there, between the plastic vomit and the itching powder."
I believe magic as an art is being sold out by dealers and artists
alike for the almighty buck.
I know we're going to disagree on this, Evan. I know you believe this
to be an "elitist", (pardon the quotation marks), position.
My opinions in this area are very firmly held. I will argue and debate
with you if you insist. You will not change my mind nor, I surmise,
will I change yours.

I will never be one to defend "journalistic standards" because I
seriously doubt if there are any, really.
My point was in defending the admittedly insensitive and perhaps even
tasteless jokes being offered here.
Pee Wee is fair game. Reubens is not.
Regarding poor Lizzie...her name STILL isn't "cleared"...
How many of us can recite the rhyme, "Lizzie Borden took an axe..."?
How many people still think that Andrew Johnson was removed from the
office of President, when the fact is that he was impeached but not
convicted?
I believe our quests for justice to be doomed to certain frustration.

A trick revered and held in awe by many magi is the AMAC Find the

The need for most magiclumpens to come into a magic shop and shout
"What's New" is indeed big. When you run out of What's News, you
can run out of business. Ken Brooke, who -- in my opinion -- had
the most incredibly loyal band of customers had always kept coming
out with new stuff. He would only make limited quantities... a
scheme his loyal customers LOVED... and when people like Tannen
would knock off something and make hundreds of them, he literally
worried himself to death.

more magical than most magnets.

What's a "wig" (an old political party?)
Research on Audience perception. Well, one bit of research done
whilst I was working the Palace of Mystery at the famed and wonderful
magic Castle (oops) typo... tsk...
.
was.... AS I came into the club on a Friday night, the bartender,
while making my "PIMMS CUP" said, "well you won't do so good
tonight!" Huh? I sed, he followed wth (am going to leave out the
quote marks) Yep, Friday night. They audiences on Friday nights
don't know how to react. You see PEOPLE that go out a lot and
know how to enjoy things... they go out ANY TIME. It don't have to
be Friday Night... it could be Monday, Wednesday, don't matter,
they just like to go out, are used to going out... know how to
enjoy things.
But the duds that almost never go out... They don't know you can
go out any time. They only know you can go out Friday night.
Cuz they don't have to get up next day and go to the assembly line.
So they save up for about three, maybe six months and out they
go on Friday night. And they break their fingernails picking the
dimes up off the bar....
.
Whew, was he right. ARghh

Re: WIRELESS MIKE SYSTEM
Hate to tell you how many years ago I did that. You cannot
feint the mike not working.. you got to keep talking... you got
to have someone "hip" and with "timing" turning the sound on and
off.
Here's another WIRE killer. I have a Head Zopper... a version of
the Head Chopper, invented by Jack Hughes (you should have seen
my airfreight bill just to get it from England) that is done with
an electric sabre saw.
You get the dude (or dudette) (actually a short haired person is
better, both for visibility and not getting their hair tangled)
into the Zopper. Then you look for the electric saw. It is laying
on the floor. (You have two funkenrings -- the deluxe models) (BOY
I wish I knew what kind of spark generator Sylvester has) and you
go over to pick up the saw. AS you approach the poor sucker in
the Zopper you turn on the saw. At same time let both funkenring
flashes go. Sometimes I used a fingertip flashpot, fire smoke,e tc.
and then you start to shake and vibrate VIOLENTLY, hopping all
over the place like 2,000 volts of juice is going thru you.
Shouting to back stage, TURN IT OFF, TURN IT OFF.... you turn it
off. Tell the guy, "It'l be OK, I think they had it plugged int
220" Shout backstage Is it OK now, they say yep... etc. etc.
Funny situation bit to say the least.
The trick itself is ANTI CLIMACTIC.
Matter of fact, when I used the old fashioned type chopper, just
as I was aboaut to do the business, I would say, "AND NOW, FOR THE
ANTI CLIMAX...."
.
ENUF?

A terrific suggestion, Tabby. At the moment I can't quite see it as my
thing, but you never know. If I do it, I'll send you a buck - as a
matter of fact, I'll try and send the one that Kent Cummins sent me,
complete with his logo on it (but unsigned).
I once had Harlan Ellison as a guest speaker at a convention. They had
another meeting going next door and had the PA for that room set too
high. Harlan was trying to read one of his stories and there was this
voice from next door that had all the qualities of chalk scratching on
a board. Harlan looked at the audience and very calmly said, "Excuse
me for a moment. He walked over to the wall, slammed it with both
hands, and screamed "SHUT THE HELL UP!" He then walked back and calmly
said, "To continue..." It was quiet next door for a few minutes, but
then the sounds from next door resumed. Harlan looked at me and said,
"Lichtman, do something about that." I went next door and they were
just finishing. So I came back and it was all quiet again. Harlan
said, "What did you do???" "Cut her mike cord," I said. He looked at
the audience and said, "How many of you (there were about 600 people in
the room) actually believe that David cut the mike cord?" EVERY hand
went up! Guess they knew me pretty well!

incapacitated or was trying to go on vacation (my phone bill back to
MAGIC! the last time I was on vacation was $145+ because I ended up
doing message file creations and compressions from the East Coast).
It is still being worked on, Tab. As a matter of fact, I came across
the non-disclosure agreement again yesterday.

True. Pain seems to be a part of the process - probably comes from
exposing one's self to the world (not intended to be funny in this
case). I've never been a fan of his work, but we do have a strange
view in our society - if we deem a guy's personal behavior to be
outside the boundaries of our social or political views, they we
denounce his creative work as well. I think that if we found out that
Jonas Salk molested children (and I am NOT suggesting that he did) then
we would probably stop using his vaccine.

I think your comment holds true for many -- perhaps most -- inventors,
but clearly not all. I know of several major creators in magic who have
no particular interest in performing, and are perfectly content to let
others "field-test" their work. To some, invention is far more than a
"mental exercise or puzzle" -- it is a process which involves its own
aesthetic, and becomes its own art form. Granted it is the exception,
not the rule, but it's a valid approach.

I've stayed out of this thread until now, because my knowledge of
classical music is limited (I enjoy it, but it is not my favorite
musical style). However, I am bewildered by the distinctions you're
making. Much of what is now called classical music was derived in part
from popular music of its time. So, if a contemporary composer wishes
to do the same, why does that automatically make the result something
other than classical?

While I would be interested in the results of such a survey, it would

such a survey is not going to help. Instead, I must rely on the

Ah yes. For the ART of it. For the excitement. For the
satisfaction. For the release. For the beauty. Because you think
you can. Because you want to. I know what you say is true. The
artist does this because he must. Creation in solitude. Naught
matters but the art. But finally you must let go to create again
and again.

On another subject: Are you familiar with the musical creations
of departed genius Harry Partch who created a form of music
rooted in nature, much like the Eastern mind and then invented
over 200 musical instruments to play it on. New scales, tonal
values, etc. He worked for years under a Ford Foundation Grant
doing all his stuff. The genius in a vacuum. There was a set of
lps available a few years ago (I have) but don't know if it was
ever released on cd. Certainly worth listening to for a view of
alternative reality.

FISM report '91
MAGIC!-NL Sat 03 Aug 91 00:34
Arnaud Van.Rietschoten posted the following msg:
Dick Koornwinder reports that he received one of the first FISM
reports. It is created by Wittus Witt from germany. Wittus writes
"enclosed you find the very first report being published about the
latest FISM".
He is probably unaware he is second....... Come on Wittus join the
team of international BBS'ers!!!.
A short clip from his report:
Resume - What did they do with out money???
Compared tp the FISM convention in Den Haag (Holland), little was
offered for the money. Cheap meals and quite expensive meals which
you had to pay yourself except the one on the boat.
If I look at the money I wonder what Lausanne did with it. Having
had only 18 months to prepare (instead of 36 as usual for a FISM) is
not an excuse for a simple buffet and a simple trip on the boat.
Den Haag was avout as expensive as Lausanne and the offered a lot.
They had video systems to transmit the close-up as well as stage
competitions. They had a nice idea for the special night (Do you
remember they passed to each and everyone a glass of champagne,
three of them would have a small
diamond). But still it is the people who make the atmosphere. And
that was very good.
We had a great time.
-end of clip-
Wittus writes that if you are interested in the complete report (8
pages with pictures/photos), send him DM 3.- per copy mentioning
A-B-C of FISM '91. Maybe not a bad idea to report you read about it
on MAGIC!-NL.
Remember that it is printed in a limited edition of 250 copies.

Re: BIRO/KAPS LETTER 1972
Forword by Dick Koornwinder:
In this letter dated december 72 (dated by Kaps....Biro mentions no
date onit) you can find a nice way to demonstrate your skill with
the second deal. At that time both were very busy with a gambling
demonstration. That explains the contents of the letter.
You will have to miss the wunderful illustration of Pete!! The
preparation of the deck is quite easy. On the face side of a
playing card a coinmagnet has been glued (in the center).
The cards below have a hole just big enough to clear the magnet,
so the top card lays flat on top of the deck with the magnet
hidden in the deck.
Don't glue the cards with a hole together keep all cards loose!!
Here comes Pete:
Preparation:
From very top (above the magnetic block drawn above):
Red picture card - Ace of Clubs - 5 of any card - any card with a
dot in the corner (or mark or punch, resing spot) so you can feel/see
when you come to it dealing. Then duplicate Ace of Clubs with postage
stamp stuck in the middle to match location of 'floating stamp' which
I will now describe.
Put all those cards above magnetic block. Then rest of deck under so
it looks like a full deck. It is best to use cards with white borders
(I think) you can try Bee back.
Take a postal stamp that is good color contrast to the deck and shim
with thin piece of steel (razor blade is good). Glue 2 stamps
together if you wish. Fix so glue on finished product is void (no
more stickum).
Now, with all cards assembled, pretend to lick stamp and stick onto
top card of deck. Magnet will hold it in place!!
Forgot....before you stick on....do double lift-- show top card is
Ace of Clubs! Now put stamp on?? Magnet holds it.
Say 'Look now how you see the second deal ...slow motion..Fred..just
deal the top card off (it slides out and stamp stays in place...this
looks weird and is non explainable but is terrific). Deal the card
face up and they see it is not Ace so must be second deal. Now deal
4 or 5 more cards face down (so they don't see the Ace) when you
come to your card with the mark, deal a 'necktie second' dealing the
duplicate ace with the stamp really stuck on it.
Either pick up cards from table and toss on deck to hide stamp
(magnetic) or palm off.
You get fact that you glue stamp on after you see where the magnetic
clings so it is nearly same location??
Trick came from old Abra...was used with another deck having a card
forced from same, the you stick stamp on, dealing for about six card
....then stop with card that has stamp stuck on it and it matches
force card...Don't think that is needed...just as strange demonstra-
tion is fine!!!
I made a new one using a coinmagnet instead of razorblade and it
works better...you have to watch polarity of magnets when you glue
up so it is in correct direction.
Also, I use the red glasses gag with the green pencil marking cards
...works like a charm. A.W. Faber "Castell" polychromos pencil
green #158 made in Germany is same as Tannen get $3.00 for a 3-inch
piece....cost 20cnts for 9 inch pencil in art stores. Works on red
Bee deck and you look thru with red glasses. No need tpay Tannen
$25,-.
If you do not find pencil, let me knwo..will send you one.
I follow this up with the old gag of Chic Schoke from Chicago..where
you tell spectator to try it. As he puts glasses on, you cut to
short card and have a stock of cards marked boldly with a big thick
black marking pen. He is thinking he is the only one that can read
them...you show him card - he reads (?) names it...is correct...you
wink at audience...they all read big marks and it goes for ut 5
cards....gets big laugh.
You expose card to him at finish...then yourecap and show him the
legit marking thu glasses. Nobody, you say, wears these anymore
they now have a tinted set up in contact lenses that is indetec-
table!!!
Jennings tells me of a drug one guy takes that while he is under
it's influence he can read cards....no else can read them!!!
Hope this is all clear...I hate to rush things....but am very
behind in some work...but did want to get this stuff to you.
These are the link items that make the Gambling lecture more
entertaining (I think).....
Take care...see you in June!!!

Don't know if they did change the rules, but under the old ones a
non-cirectional under 5K didn't need a 1st on the premises at all
times.
In the Carribean there is a small island called Swan Island. It is
claimed by both the U.S. and Venezuela. Also by a guy in Boston. A
company rented the island from the guy, conveniently ignoring the
claims of the countries and set up a huge radio station - ABOVE 50Kw.
They sold time to the highest bidder - sometimes the U.S., aiming
propaganda at Cuba, sometimes the Cubans aiming propaganda at everyone
else.
One day the three guys who worked the station saw a small boat
approaching. It was a group of Venezualians who came to reclaim the
territory. They said, "Yeah, sure, fine, but how about a drink first?"
The "invasion" ended a couple of hours later with the Venezuelans
waving good-bye and singing as they set back out to sea.
Moral: Get Kraborge organized as an independent country and you can
make a nice living off of a pirate station.

made everyone General whether they passed 1st or not! From the
point of view of a former 1st who worked hard for it and was

Re: CONTEST.TXT
I respect your love for magic. I hope that you respect mine as well.
You have an interesting analogy for magic there - but I think the
situation could be otherwise. As mentioned in my message to Evan, I
think the public would welcome magic back into their lives, even if
only performance magic and even if only through a willful suspension of
disbelief. To me, the times seem right for a resurgence of magic -
economic hard times and general frustration with life, technology,
crime, ecology - just the sort of times that should make for great
success in entertainment and particularly in something that gives
people a chance to believe again.
Hell, maybe that was Stormin' Norman's real magic trick.
I believe that the failure is on OUR part, that we don't understand our
own craft. I don't pretend to have any solutions - but we have an
electronic think-tank here with some (if not all) of the top minds in
magic on it. And yet we use it to spin our wheels - to bemoan the
awful condition magic is in, to feud about inconsequentials, and to
toss one-liners at one another. Maybe that says more about us then it
does about either magic or the public's perception?

theoretician whose work changed the face of magic in this century. The
death of a comparable master in a _respected_ field would have been
acknowledged by glowing remembrances in the news media, retrospectives
on television, or at the very least some mention on Entertainment
Tonight. Did you notice any?
The sad truth is that Slydini was not even able to make a living from
the performance of his art. He had to support himself by giving magic
lessons.
Consider the magic that does show up on TV. Do we receive explorations
on PBS? No; magic, when it is "allowed" on the air, winds up in the
form of low-brow crap like the Magic Castle special or the
International Magic Awards.
And please don't bring up David Copperfield. He is the exception that
tests the rule, and his success means nothing in terms of the larger
picture. Citing Copperfield as "proof" that the public respects good
magic is like interpreting the popularity of the Cosby show as "proof"
that there is no racism in American society.

Yeah - why are magic shops always in the seediest parts of town? And
why do they usually have a large stock (right up front) of absolutely

vaudeville by most and one of the reasons it's not seen as an art y

This area is saturated with radio antennas. Every freq is taken both
amplitude and frequency mod. My goal actually wasn't to get on the
air, but to sell the site license and construction permit. After that
I got a NPR license and did a weekly broadcast via Satcom IV and
called it the Tidewater Report featuring a voice modulated time
traveler named _Capt. Jerry and his Way, Way Back Machine_. We would
create the sound effects, etc and CJ would visit different historical
events, one of which was an escape by Harry Houdini. Capt Jerry was
not totally ept and would get trampled by horses, etc. In the HH
episode, Capt Jerry bothered HH so much that HH locked CJ in a back
stage broom closet. We almost didn't get him back. The program had
eclectic music and tabman commentary also. Last airer of the program
before the show's retirement was Fordham University radio in 1990.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
I dunno... on the train from Lausanne to Geneva Timothy Wenk did
some impromptu magic (none from Lifesavers) that knocked out this
viewing woman. She went bananas. In conversation she was "Lady
something" owner of a famous Art Gallery and was planning an opening
of a big show... She said, "Oh magic is so wonderful... how do I
get magicians to work for me at my grand opening?" So I said, there
are a couple of great Swiss magic, Marco Tempest and Martin Cottet,
just call their agent in New York and they are available. (I just
happened to have their agent's number).
People, that love magic, sometimes don't realize it until they
see it done well, and then don't know how to get a good one. To
look in the Yellow Pages and get DOO DOO the Clown, who's ad says,
Magic, Fun, for all ages... Kid Parties, Trade Shows, Carnivals,
Network TV" Look out.... argh....

Max, do the audiences feel favorably toward your magic? They do
when I do mine? I think it cannot be generalized. I was flying
to Baltimore and the man in seat next to me (successful looking
business man, Rolex, etc.) and when chatting and asking me where
I was going, I said to a Magician's convention. The guy got all
excited. Said "I see David Copperfield on TV all the time, love
what he does... and we went to Las Vegas and saw the guys with the
tigers..." etc...

Re: CONTEST.TXT
Magic shops are in sleezy areas because the stuff they sell (to
pay the rent) is the joke crap, costumes etc. that appeal to those
kind of folks in those kinds of areas.
I used to work at the perfect example "Morcom's House of Novelties"
and actually designed and manufactured terrible tasteless stuff.
Our biggest seller was a Christmas Stocking stuff with Horse
Manure (dried of course)!!!! The owner actually kept a couple of
horses, just to gather, store and sell the HORESE ****!
However, in the Back was a great magic selection and upstairs we
had a killer little theater, club room, etc. with stage, lights
and so on. So the "back room" was the place!
If you used to go to Tannen's I hope it was to see people and go
to the Cafeteria later. When I used to go to NY alla time on biz,
there was no back room atmosphere at Tannens, but to go to the
TRUE BACK ROOM... was to go to Al Flosso's. Al, sadly, is no longer
with us... but his was one of the last great hangouts.

Re: CONTEST.TXT
To me, I don't think the concern is whether the general pupulation
perceives magic as an art, but in our own perceptions of the art of
magic. I don't think the population perceives music as an art either.
I think their perception of art is that of something old and boring.
My 1938 Webster's 1st definition of art is thus; Skill in PERFORMANCE
acquired by experience, study, or observation. The 9th is; The black
art; magic -. The definitions go on to list things such as learning,
science, the ability to adapt or create contrivances. As we approach
the current day, the definitions have changes to allow for expression
and perception; however, art's history is rooted in individualism and
skill, not in public perception.

Re: WIRELESS MIKE SYSTEM
Sometimes quieter is better. Andres Segovia used to give "classical"
guitar contcerts sans mic. The first few seconds of music couldn't be
heard but quickly the audience shushed itself and soon the halls were
filled with beautiful melodies. I used this technique when I taught
school (learned from a Segovia essay) and had the quietest classrooms
in Amherst.

A USO show Christmas Eve in Vietnam near the DMZ, I don't remember th
town, but we were trying to work for Marines and Army guys having
drunken fist fights with each other. machine gun fire outside the
crude building and the chance of a rocket attack had everybody on
edge. I asked the mandolin player to start quietly playing _Silent
Night off the mic. The rest of us slowly joined in and before it
was over everybody was crying, singing, and hugging each other. Best
part was, chopper pilot back down south let me sit up front and fly
a Huey going back to Saigon. I always felt with the audience and
guess I built a pretty good rapport with most audiences; though like
you say, someofem you can't do crap with. I think the town (village)
was Ben Hua.
