Just type a couple of spaces on a blank line. The BBS line counter sees

See! It works!

Thanks for taking the time to check it out for me, Max. There was a
lot of "feeling" going on around that time with many caring enter-

especially Artists (from various media) have been bridging the
political gaps long before governments of the world had time to catch

Through your work as Librarian you teach. I would define teaching

imagine that if your efforts to teach those officers were sincere
and intended to be helpful, then it would qualify, certainly.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

A hollow egg with a hole in the side in the confines of a hen's nest
can mean two things; the beginning of life or the vestage of death.
In the hands of an artist it can mean wonder (no pun intended). The
creation of such a tool can mean the same.
.
I understand of what you speak; however, in the theater, art can
be born with or without a performing artist on stage. The lights
slowly dim in the theatre as the music begins to fill the hall. The
audience settles in their seats and begins to focus their attention
on the stage as the curtain slowly begins its' ascent. Stage center
in the veil of transparant darkness is a pedastal. Two banks of ring
lights activate as the footlights come up and a cackle is heard
throughout the hall, then another, and another. She has laid an egg.

Re: NEW AGE MAGIC

Burton, I would never fleece unless I had been fleeced first. I would
never cheat my friends and expect to have them as friends for very
long as life's too short and time without friendships too long. I
had some guys in Nashville I was playing poker with for three months
at least once a week and they were taking me for about 250-500 a
night. Now, I wanted to hang with them as I was relatively new in
town and a couple of the guys were in the music biz. After two
months of this I was complaining to a friend of mine - a gospel
singer named Billy Sea. Billy asked me if I could get him into the
game and they were glad to have another pigeon. To make a long story
short, Billy took everything they had; I mean EVERYTHING. I had
never seen those guys ever break a sweat and they were wilting down
to their underwear. I just played my usual game and Billy sat next
to me all prim and proper with his beautiful blond hair perfectly
styled. He never took off his coat or loosened his tie and those
other guys were half naked by the time we left.
.
After BC had cleaned them out we left and got in his car to head back
to whereever we had come from. Billy peeled off half the roll in his
had and gave it to me saying, "Tabby, don't play cards with those
boys again. They cheat!" I said, I won't Billy, I won't. And I never
did. It was at that point that I got serious about learning about
cards and dice, etc and the cheaters ways since I had been raised
to do right, just like Billy.

I have changed the handling for the Frog Prince to eliminate the
double lift from center of deck force of which I have had a hard
time perfecting... also I don't like to show a selected card still
in the deck... wheh...
Since you bring out the deck with the Curse (folded up) card anyway
I use a stack. I have the Jack on top followed by about 15 Two of
Spades and a two of Spades 2nd from bottom. You fan 'em face up
showing half the deck (concealing the force group) then force one
of the dueces, bury it... (you no longer need the overhand shuffle
to reverse the cards) and the effect is much the same... Just a
little care to keep the stock from showing.... Flows easier for
me.... DON'T MESS WITH THE TAMARIZ SWITCH... IT CANNOT BE IMPROVED.

Re: JUST FOR OPENERS

If you are not using RDMAGIC you can set your communications program to
expand blank lines, if it has such a feature, in ASCII uploads. Some
word processors will leave spaces on blank lines in pre-prepared
messages, some won't. I am not sure if RDMAGIC will retain leading
spaces on "blank" lines - will have to check. Otherwise, it is fully
acceptable to place a period or colon at the front of a blank line.

Since MAGIC! reads a truly blank line as the end of a
message, the line has to have something on it.

When sending a file such as RDMAGIC creates, the "expand blank lines"
feature of a communications program MUST be turned OFF, otherwise the
various messages will all become one big message.

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

I think I see what you are trying to say and why you are saying it.
And there is, no doubt, room for negative comments that are appropriate
in context, as you indicated.

But I think that the majority of negative comments are not made for the
positive reasons that you suggest. Rather, they are manufactured from
the commentor's own ego. A change for a fragile personality to "show
off" in a manner that he or she thinks is sagacious.

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

Still, there is a difference between making a comment which DOES help
raise their perception of magic (and such a comment can be negative)
and one which is said merely to show off one's own superiority. Most
often, when I hear a magician (or, sometimes, a member of the
magicalumpen) commenting in a negative manner it is only a feeble
attempt to elevate his own status with laypersons, not to guide or
inform them.

Re: WIRELESS MIKE SYSTEM

I haven't seen him in a long time, but Harlan is indeed a very
interesting guy. He can be very abrasive in public, and can do "bits"
that would rival any of the bits that magi soemtimes do. For example,
at the time, he was dating a skinny, frail looking blonde (I've
forgotten her name, so, for convenience, I'll call her Marilyn - I
think she later became one of his wives, but not sure). Also, before
I go on with the story, I should point out that Harlan, for those who
don't know, is VERY short - he says he's 5'2", but my wife is 5'2" and
she can see over him.

Anyway, he and Marilyn were at dinner with a group of about 6 people.
The next table consisted of a group of drunken guys all basically the
size of Green Bay Packers. They were rowdy, etc. Finally, Harlan gets
up, goes over, and says something to the ringleader. The group gets
very quiet and quickly leaves. Everyone looked at Harlan with awe and
someone said, "What did you do?" "Simple," Harlan said, "I told 'em
that Marilyn was dying of leukemia, that this was her last night out
before she went into the hospital for the final time and that they were
disturbing her dinner."

It is one to work on among ourselves.

in-flight magi in exchange for tickets? Only one quarter serious --
but I think Virgin Atlantic has on-board magi. And the new local train
from L.A. to Long Beach, the "Blue Line," has variety shows in transit.

By the way, in my original post I believe I referred to

I left you the opportunity to do so). It was too late when I arrived

Lest we forget, the main purpose of mentioning the whole affair on

livestock during a performance. In addition to killing off most of the
livestock, it causes much annoyance and expense to the family. Doing
so is very likely NOT to get you a future booking.

GOOD EVENING was called Behind the Fridge in the UK. Great show.
Great second act opening bit...
Cook was onstage and after several solo minutes said, "You are
probably wondering where Dudley is..." Just then a trapdoor in
the stage opened and Dudley came flying UP OUT OF THE BASEMENT,
the door closed, he landed on it... next to Peter and calmly said,
"Here I am!"
At a party a couple of years later I asked Dudley if that was
there (the trap) and if they wrote the gag to take advanatage of
the existing trap. He said, "NO WE WROTE THE GAG and had the trap
built everywhere we worked."

SCHEDULE --- SCHEDULE --- SCHEDULE --- SCHEDULE --- SCHEDULE

              *****************************************

***** BRUNCH WITH TOMMY WONDER! *****

***** A SPECIAL WORLD CLASS MAGIC! EVENT *****

            ***** SUNDAY, AUGUST 11TH, 1991 *****

              *****************************************

HERE IS THE SCHEDULE FOR THE TOMMY WONDER BRUNCH

We will meet at the Magic Castle at NOON on Sunday, August 11th.
The reservation is in my name (too many magics down there): David
Lichtman. From noon to 1:30 we will have exclusive use of the
Pub area downstairs for our get-together. Brunch itself will
begin promptly at 1:30 in the dining room (we are scheduled for
the Cherub Room).

Non-members just need to tell the doorkeepers that they are with
our group. Dress is casual, but, as many people are nicely dressed
at the Sunday Brunch, you will probably want to avoid torn T-shirts,
etc. Those of you who have MAGIC! buttons should wear them (ALONG
with your clothes, not in lieu of them).

Let's welcome TOMMY WONDER to Los Angeles in true MAGIC! style!

                          ***************

Remember -- if you do not already have a reservation for this event,
you are not able to attend.

Re: "STAMP"

The labels were done on using the Avery program; the icon, of course,
is thanks to your scanner. As for the sticker on the flap side, forgive
me but it is not a "chop" -- that term [A] refers to a carved unit used
for stamping one's name with an ink impression, and [B] usually
connotes one from China. The Japanese equivalent is called a "hanko" or
"inkan." The sticker is printed from a hand-calligraphed original which
uses a fluid lettering style which has a quality similar (in terms of
viewer response, not physical design) to Old English. There is a proper
name for this type of sticker, but it escapes me at the moment.

Mind you, I do own several inkans, and also a Chinese chop.

By the way, you might be interested to know that every adult Japanese
has at least one inkan registered with the government. It is used as a
personal stamp in the same way we use signatures. On domestic contracts
signatures are almost never used; the imprint of a registered inkan is,
however, legally binding.

Re: COP ON ARSENIO

I am answering your message two days later, however I think it is
relevent. A guy I work with was quizing me on magic procedure. He was
getting fed up with the "he does it very well" answer. He was trying to
find out how a magician got a full grown rabbit out of a flattened top
hat. I changed the subject to the copperfield effect and got a big
suprise.... this guy told me how it was done, and he was not too far
off !!! I consider television magic a waste of good programming time,
for the most part. Too much of the performers "charactor" and humor or
class is lost. (Except for Penn and Teller who have an incredible
ammount of humor and no class). The point is I am preplexed (spelling?)
by the continued popularity of TV magic and distressed that all and I
mean ALL magicians are measured against this "standard". Thanks for
listening to my ranting and raging about a topic too close to my heart

Re: "STAMP"

I found it interesting that you chose the icon which had you looking
off the end of the envelope rather than the one that had you looking
toward the return address.

I believe that the actual derivation of the word "chop" is Hindi, from
the word chap (with a straight line over the "a" that the IBM character
set does not include). The Hindi word means "stamp," the actual title
of the topic I selected for the message. "Chop" includes both the tool
you describe and the impression it makes.

I found your information on inkans most interesting and I appreciate
your posting it. I did call one of my Japanese friends to ask for the
proper term for the article on the back of your envelope and she told
me that the Japanese word for it was _stamp_. She said it was derived
from the English term.

A few days ago a posted a bit of a gag effect about the new hundred
dollar bills the treasury is printing with the multicolored synthetic
thread. I thought it might be funny to pull at an imaginary bit of
that thread that seemed to be coming loose and unravel one of those 25
foot multicolored coils from behind it. In my mind it still seems
funny but I noticed a deafening roar of silence in response to it from
all of you. Should I take that to mean try something els I haven't
tried it on an audience as yet - do you think I should? What the heck,

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

I understand what you mean. In cases like that I usually keep
myself in the dark, and encourage people to talk about it. Why
they thought it was great etc. Usually I agree just mildly by saying
something about the positive aspects. I think if someone thinks
something is great, who am I to say that they should not have
liked it. Negative comments can easily be misunderstood as may be
sour grapes (and sometimes that might actually be the case!).
But there is nothing against it to tell people also about other
performers, and what great things these other performers do. This
is usually easy, since the subject is magic. Outsiders cannot do
much with negative remarks anyway. If they feel a mediocre act was
great, that means they are not all that conversant with magic
anyhow. So to discuss the problems of magic, or the qualities of
magic, being good or bad, is pretty senseless. But sometimes one
can tell them a little bit about the great things going on,
without the need to downgrade the less good magic.

A few years later, around 1978, when I was performing in an improv

Re: HUNDRED DOLLAR THREAD

I didn't reply because it brought another effect to mind and I was
waiting to see if someone else would mention it. There are small red
and blue threads in all existing currency and there is a bit, using red
and blue silks, in which you extract the threads. I felt yours was
different and also interesting, but I didn't want to be the first to
comment because I couldn't (and still can't) remember the name of the
other effect and the creator.

You could do yours with the same method that the other one is done,
using a thumbtip and some small thumbtip coils. Funny idea would be to
do it on stage and produce either very long silks or coils from inside
your jacket (concealled by the bill) - using this method, the resulting
material could be very, very large indeed, could end in jumbo coins
(the real value once the thread is removed?), etc. Maybe a bill switch
to a smaller size bill?

I really DID enjoy reading your original post and I liked the idea.
Just was hoping someone would cite the other effect before I commented.

I agree with what you are saying. But I don't think that most people

Schwartzkopf is already retired, and Bush should be out in 1998 or so,

Re: "STAMP"

Indeed, the etymology of "chop" is as you say; according to my
dictionary it is properly applied to Indian and Chinese name-stamps.

The comment by your Japanese friend is amusing; I'm willing to bet she
is under thirty. There is indeed a native name for those stickers, and
at some point I'll take the effort to look it up. I recall it contains
the word "man" (10,000) within it, referring to the fact that they're
all over the place.

As your friend indicates, there is an extensive vocabulary of loan
words in modern Japanese, drawn from other languages. In recent times
English is the most frequent source, but there are others from German,
French, Dutch, and Portuguese. These are not always easy to recognize;
not only does the pronunciation become altered to fit the Japanese
syllablary, often the meaning mutates, as well.

A few years ago I was having dinner in Tokyo, and the topic moved to
this subject. I made a bet with one of the people I was with, that we
would continue our conversation (which was in Japanese), and that _he_
would be unable to avoid using a loanword before I did. He lost the
bet within about two minutes.

I think one of the reasons doctors and lawyers are often held in low

to point out again that I didn't make the comment to a layperson, but

ik er eens een bij je trekken?" But, for all I know, that could mean
"I can neither hear nor speak...Your angles were bad."

Re: TEN CARD TRICKS

I got to thinking, and nearly all the things I do WELL are cards!
Luckily (for my friends anyway) I only do them by request
(theirs, not mine!) and only one or two at a shot.

Anyway, here is my list: (in no particular order)
"Vernon's Variant" (and variations), my FAVORITE,
"Marked Cards", from Bob Jardine's lecture notes,
"I Never Play with a Full Deck", also Jardine's,
"Spectator is the Magician", by Daryl Martinez,
"Delayed Reverse", Larry Becker from NY Symposium One
"Bizarre Twist", by Paul Harris,
"Triumph, with up to 5 spectator's selections reversed", a
perversion of my own compiled from Vernon, Jennings, and Anneman
handlings.

You probably noticed a lack of false shuffles, palming, double
lifts, etc., preferring more ACTION moves such as Elmsley Count,
card reversals, color changing backs, audience involvement,.....
There is a reason for this, I'd much rather stick to things
slightly more visual than "take a card and I'll find it" that
seems to prevail at our typical magic meetings.

(Besides, it boils down to.... I just can't seem to palm, pass,
flourish,... you know .... SKILL)

Balancing this, ONE coin routine,
"Coins through Silk", by Michael Ammar, my favorite (performer,
not the trick, although it's great too!)
"7 corner Hank", Billy McComb, from his Stevens Video,
"Crazy Man's Handcuffs", by Michael Ammar
"Linking Bands", Dan Harlan, Mike Ammar, Mike Weber, Chris
Kenner... (the only trick whose credits are longer than the
effect!)

And when I want to get really serious, a demonstration of
psychokenesis (known as PK factor to the rest of us).

Well, theres my ten (more or less). Anyone else?

David (the other one)

Re: NEW AGE MAGIC

First let me give a definition of fraud, "Deception in order to gain
by another's loss". Deception is, "To mislead by or AS by falsehood."
Funk & Wagnalls.
.
When you say you question their logic and may not agree with their
beliefs, it seems you are saying that THEY REALLY believe what they
are doing, like channeling for money, doing crystal healing, selling
bogus energy devices, etc. so therefore they are not frauds, merely
misguided. The buyers of their services, have compatible belief
systems so what's the harm ?
.
A concrete example of what I consider to be fraud is a device that
is supposed to shield an area from outside electromagnetic energy.
It is possible to shield an area by buiiding a Faraday cage around
it or using concrete and lead. This device is a DIGITAL CLOCK with
a sticker on the back, that says it contains a 'channeled' circuit
that will generate an energy barrier. Someone took a regular digital
clock (the kind with numerals about 3 inches high) and convinced
the buyer that it would effectively shield him from stray radiation !
.
I used a hall-effect probe on my scope, and could detect no active
radiation, except where the transformer was converting AC to DC.
The buyer, (the same guy I took to the castle) just said, "Your
intruments are not sensitive to the kind of energy that this device
is generating. I can feel the energy and that's all that counts".
.
This alarm clock probably sells normally for $ 10-15, the guy paid
$ 100 for the channeled version. That's $ 85-90 profit taking
advantage of a person's belief system. Whether the seller believes
in the device or not, it has no scientific basis in fact. The
buyer has been deceived, and the seller has gained at the others
loss.
.
Now the question comes to mind. Has a fraud been committed, if the
buyer doesn't think so. As a corallary, has a fraud been committed
if the seller believes what he is selling to be true ?
.
The reason so many con-artists keep going for so long is that many
of the 'victims' are ashamed to admit they have been duped or may
actually believe the product is 'working as advertized'. In the
abstract, a fraud has been committed whether anyone complains or
not, even if the seller was 'deceiving' the buyer unknowingly. In
the real world, like who cares - no harm no foul.
.
Go to a Psychic fair sometime and check out the fringe science
for sale, and then tell me that this isn't fraud by the definition
above. I could go into several other examples, but I'm not sure
we could ever come to an agreemnet on this - let's get back to
magic. We seem to get off on tangents. Only a few have commented
on my original point.

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

I tend to take a passive attitude when asking what others thought
about an act. If they thought it was great, then who am I to tell
them how bad it was. The more common question that I get asked is
if I 'know' how they did a particuliar effect. If I say I do, then
they want me to tell them, which I won't do. If I don't know I tell
them I don't, but I don't think they believe me.
.
If the act was not up to snuff, and they didn't like it I just let it
go at that. I agree that trying to impress people with your knowledge
of magic is boring.

Re: "STAMP"

I have not heard of any Japanese groups actively fighting the influx of
loanwords. I'm sure there are some conservative commentators who have
made protests over the current rate and volume, but traditionally the
Japanese have been quite open to cultural imports of this type. You're
probably aware that their writing systems are based on Chinese, and in
conjunction with that a huge number of Chinese words entered the spoken
language. In fact, most of the _kanji_ characters have at least two
ways of being pronounced, one of which is based on Chinese. The actual
percentage of contemporary Japanese that is purely Yamato is, I
believe, less than fifty percent. So, it's a little late to start
worrying about loanwords...

As for chopsticks, the Japanese use them for domestic and other Asian
cuisines, and switch to cutlery when eating western food; it's as
simple as that. The only particular comments I've heard with any
regularity on the subject have to do with the fact that the younger
generation tends to handle chopsticks somewhat sloppily -- rather as
has been observed about the table manners of young Americans.

Re: ABBOTTS DAY 2

      Abbotts - Day 2
.
I am very happy to write todays review. Yesterday's was rather
negative on most points but today's is almost a complete
reversal. The weather today was horrid. 65 and rained all day.
The lecture and show were very well done on all counts.
.
Marvyn Roy lectured, not about tricks, but about performing
and creating miracles. Not more tricks, do the ones you have
better. He was as well received as Terry Seabrooke was
panned.
.
Whereas wednesday's show was mediocre magic at it's best
tonights show was excellent.
.
Mike Caldwell was the MC and did a bit with a kid on stage
and a cut and restored gentlemens hank. A perfect example of
how to treat children (or adults for that matter) on stage. Fun
was had by all, but not at the expense of a child who went away
with a certificate and a coupon good for two souvenier Kennedy
half dollars redeemable at any bank.
.
Dale Hindman was the leadoff man with some excellent money
magic. He also provided a good demonstration that the
performance is more important than the trick. One of his was
silk from dollar bill. It's in the Klutz Book of Magic but when
worked in and presented properly it came off as a very credible
effect.
.
Next up were the Troyans, again. Last nights high spot
returned with new mime skits and were just as entertaining.
This time Slav was a weight lifter...very well done and there
was a spoof on magic where Slav is going to make an apple
disappear from under his hat. After several false start Katie
steals the apple when Slav is not looking and during a couple of
more false starts eats it. Slav failing to get his trick going tells
the audience to forget it he'll get his apple back. Katie says no
and after some audience interaction Slav does remove his apple
from the hat.
.
Up third was Earl Ray Wilcox who gave a masterful
performance of pure prestidigitation. He did a wonderful
miser's dream and a continuous card production that were great
examples of pure slight of hand.
.
The cleanup spot went to Brett Daniels, who made it finally
after his car troubles. He was worth the wait. Primarily a
dove/bird act it too was beautifully executed including the
production of two cockatoo's and two large parrots as well as
several doves including one that changed from white to red in
a flash. This act got a standing ovation from the crowd. The
highlight was the revalation of a selected card that appeared
under the follwoing circumstances. The usual audience member
selected a card and it is lost in the deck etc. House lights go
down a bit and the deck is thrown out into the audience. A
cockatoo appears to materialize out of the deck and in its beak
is the selected card.
.
Last on the evenings program was Blackstone's full show for the
Colon get together. He presented the classical dancing spirit
hank and saw a woman in half with a giant circular saw. The
whole show was well done and well received by an audience that
also gave him a standing ovation.
.
Tomorrow features the closeup show, Karrel Fox Lecture,
Mercer Helms, David Seebach, Bob Bloenk and Terry Seabrooke
as MC.
.

They are only about the size of your thumbnail, and are just like the

maybe 10 feet at the outside. You could carry a dozen of these in you

I beg YOUR pardon, Anthony. My comment was not intended to slight your
writing. I was referring to the fact that Peter did the pilot for the
show without really comprehending that, if picked up (which it was), he
would be obligated to stay in the U.S. and continue on. The show was
all wrong for him, in my opinion. It never took advantage of Peter's
wonder and unique comedic gifts.
Regarding the Tarzan bit, it was called "One Leg Too Few."

Re: HUNDRED DOLLAR THREAD

Pete has made a good point about most people not understanding the
invisible stuff in the bill. I've found that most people don't even
realize that the SERIAL NUMBERS on bills are unique. I do a bit with
the serial number and I've had to work on the wording a lot to guide
them to understanding that it is a unique number.

But your threads got me thinking (and RANDY LUND, in his Abbott's
report mentioned one source of the red and blue threads trick - The
Klutz Book of Magic) - for close-up, maybe there is something that
could be done with removing the INVISIBLE part of the bill WITHOUT
displaying it - an effect that goes the OPPOSITE way from the coil
production!

You might be on the road to inventing TWO effects here!

Thanks for the info. Yes, I was drawing on the info about the younger
set handling chopsticks sloppily. Also a furor a few years ago about
"sporks" being used for school lunches.

A few years ago, I had lunch with Akio Morrita. Someone at the table
asked him, "Does the outlook of the younger employees at Sony differ
from your own?"

"Oh, yes," he said, "Their outlook is MUCH different."

Every Westerner at the table developed a sudden smirk, waiting for the
tirade about kids being lazy, etc.

"They are MUCH more serious," he went on to say, "I'm leaving Sony in
a couple of years - what will I care? They will be spending the rest
of their lives there. They are much more concerned with the future of
the company!"

Dead silence at the table.

We'd better either reconnect this thread to magic or take it private
before the Sysop gets us.

Sorry Dave, but it can. The _Sweat of the Brow_ decision grants
copyright protection only for the exact wording and not for the
research, effort, etc that goes into it. The decision was made to
encourage the flow of ideas necessary for science and invention and
unfortunately everything else falls in between. Any one can take the
work of someone else and publish it as long as he/she doesn't
directly plagerize. This isn't my interpretation but that of the
Supreme Court of the USA.

In

"Mysterium Surprise Barbecue". Ik ga nu een lekker"Koninkje"

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

In Holland we have a guy, who always has to make negative comments
about others. He cannot get it out of his mouth to say something
is good. I have heard him make a positive comment only once, and
that only after he was almost forced to do so. But when he talkes
about his own achievements...it is a different matter!
He is typically one who tries to uplift himself by downgrading
others. Suppose he is more in love with himself than with magic.

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

Wether a lay person likes or dislikes an act, it is always of
value to find out why. I may have told you, that there is a girl
who, knowing I am a magician, discusses the magic she has seen with
me. I think she is far more knowledgable than many magicians I
know. She does not know the in's and out's of magic, but does see
a lot of theatre. It is amazing the way she analyses, puts the
finger on discrepancies and little details. Details most of us
(including me) think will go past the audience. She is very smart,
and more than once she has put new light on things for me. Not all
lay people are this sharp, but it is good to know some are.

Gee, that sounds like an incredible effect. It is good! I like it. May
be ifsome type of gimmick could roll the bill from the top onwards, so
it seems to become shorter. At the same time some thread is reeled of
this same gimmick, seemingly coming from the top. Also the thread
unreeling from the gimmick could be the motive power to have the bill
roll itself up. Very interesting!!!!!!

Funny! I was trying to think of something along that line too! Maybe

thread has to be longer than bill. Then vanish the whole thing with a

Agreed - he is more in love with himself than with magic. There is an
old story about a guy who was a member of a club and who, no matter
what anyone said, would sigh and say, "It could have been worse."

Once his buddies decided to come up with a story that he couldn't do
that to. So, one evening, when he was sitting in the bar at the club,
a guy rushed in and said, "Did everyone hear what happened to Jim? He
came home about an hour ago and found his wife in bed with another man.
He shot them both and then turned the gun on himself!"

The guy sighed and said, "It could have been worse."

"How in H*ll could it have been worse???" his friends demanded.

"Well," he said, "if he'd been an hour earlier I'd be dead now."

On second thought, when you stop by, you can pickup the 20.

Re: HUNDRED DOLLAR THREAD

Okay, how about this: there is an approach to geometric vanishes which
was pioneered by a Japanese magician named Atsukawa, but which did not
receive much attention until a version called "Paradox" by Matsuyama
appeared in "Chronicles" magazine around 1980. At any rate, although it
is most often made with a playing card this can be constructed using a
bill. The basic idea is that the bill has been cut into four pieces,
which when placed together form a complete bill. However, if the pieces
are turned upside-down and reassembled, there is now a gap in the
middle.
So, to apply the thread-extraction idea, have a small coil of green
thread finger-clipped. Bring out the bill, and assemble it. Now gather
the pieces, reach in and pull out the thread. Reassemble the bill to
show the gap, apparently accounted for by the removal of the thread.
Alternatively, finger-clip a penny; reach in and extract it, then
reassemble the bill -- the gap exists because the bill is now worth
only 99 cents...

Re: ROBIN BOLTMAN

I never said , nor implied, that Boltman's bravery had or has
anything to do with his being a magician nor of his being an enter-
tainer, but that doesn't alter the fact that he is one. I would
suggest however, that live performers, of which Boltman is one do
exhibit a certain amount of "bravery" when they mount the platform.
I have seen those who's line of work would suggest bravery become
weak in the knees at the mere thought of getting up in front of an
audience and saying three words. I am proud of being in the entertain
ment business and proud of many I have "served" with. The fact that
I show pride in his accomplishments because I can relate to him is
personal with me and because we (Boltman and I) share certain
interests.

Re: HUNDRED DOLLAR THREAD

I was thinking that 59 coins would be a lot to steal. I guess if
you added a few more dimes and less pennies it might be managable.
I've been thinking about a tapestry bill and seems like I remember
seeing a guy with a shirt that had bills of different denominations
printed on it. Maybe get some of the cloth if it's still avail and
cut a bill out and fray the edges so that when you pulled the thread
out it would appear to be fraying. Too much for me, though I might
check around for some of the material next time I'm at the fabric
wearhouse. A thought.

Re: HUNDRED DOLLAR THREAD

To expand the thought a bit, perhaps you could keep the coil in a
thumbtip, and have a bill with a hundred on one side, and a one on the
other. When you roll the bill around the tip, do it so the $100 is
outward. Then pull the coil out. As you unroll the bill, putting the
thumb tip back on, you turn the bill around. This way you could say
that when you remove the thread, the bill is only worth a dollar. Now
roll the dollar into a cone around the tip. Say the great thing you've
discovered is that they use too much thread. You only need a little
bit of the coil to turn it back into a hundred. Tear off about 6
inches, and stuff it back into the tip, loading the tip back on as you
turn the bill back around to show it is now a hundred. Tell them to
keep the rest of the thread/coil, in order to turn a few other ones
into hundreds, if they want!
If this would work, you could probably do it with a borrowed $100, and
switch it for the double sided bill under cover of pocketing the bill
during a joke.
I don't know, I was just thinking about it today, and this way, it
seems to go someplace and come back.

Re: NEW AGE MAGIC

I think fraud has largely to do with intent. As an example, I am not
a Christian -- but I assume that most minister and priests, subscribing
to a body of belief I do not share, are sincere -- and that when they
pass the collection plate and offer up prayers it is with honest
inent. Mst -- not all.
There are many who believe that Tarot readings are fraud; since I
have been reading Tarot for over thirty years, and think that what I wo
with it is valuable and useful work -- a view shared by my querents --
am I, in your view, committing fraud, because you don't accept my
belief system?
Again, there are hustlers in all fields; there are even poeple, I am
told, who buy some magic apparatus and then think it is not fraud to
call themselves magicians...hard to believe, I know, but true. I
repeat that most of the people I know in the New Age are sincere;
certainly I don't share all their beliefs, nor they mine -- but that
has nothing to do with the question of fraud at all.

I'm not exactly sure how the turning "upside down" creates a gap. What
shapes are the four pieces? Is one of the cuts angled?

There is also a possible alternative idea in your suggestion, not
topological - a borrowed bill is shown and some thread extracted. It
then comes apart into four pieces. Then reassemble it with the gap and
extract the penny. Reassemble it and "suture" it using the thread and
return in, restored, to the owner.

Re: CONTEST.TXT

While I did some writing for the Love Boat (revision-re-write work) I
am not the one and the same. Credits always list me as Anthony Blake
(as do my credits when I do an acting job). I presume that the Dirty
Dozen you speak of is either the mini-series/movie-of-the-week or the
weekly FOX series of a few seasons past. Again, I did not write for
them...as a comic the bulk of my writing has been concentrated in
sit-coms and variety television specials and for other comics, although
I co-wrote a mini-series for Metromedia Producers Corportation ("Leave
Your Tears Behind") and was working on a feature film project based on
the Spencer for Hire type novels with Steve McQueen at the time of his
death, (I did some re-write work for McQueen on "Tom Horn" and "The
Hunter" as well as his very rarely seen screen adaptation of Henrik
Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People" which Steve both produced and
directed).

Re: HUNDRED DOLLAR THREAD

The Ireland device under discussion was a slim metal tube just the
right diameter to hold a stack of almost fifty U.S. one-cent coins. It
had a hinged cap on its underside (which, I suppose, means it wasn't a
cap...) held in place by pressure. The tube had a clip with which it
could be attached to your belt, concealed by your coat. At the proper
time you could pull open the cap and the coins would slide into your
hand. It was a one-hand operation, and once you had caught the coins on
the first phalange of the fingers the heel of the hand could be used to
hold the stack intact, until the moment the coins were produced when,
of course, you'd kick the stack apart to shower the loose coins.

What if you got some of that graphic arts tape -- the narrow stuff.
I think Letraset and Chartpac produce it in colours now. Then you
can zig-zag it across the bill on the back and maybe when you pull
it off and somehow scrunch the bill up in your other hand a bit it
could look like it unravels for a bit? I can't be sure 'cause I

I can certainly agree that fraud has to do with intent. The fact that
a certain evangelist used an ear receiver and was fed info by his
conferates is certainly fraudulent as he was using deception to
prove his ability to communicate directly to 'god'.
.
I too share a belief in the Tarot as a valid means of using the
principle of synchronicity to obtain information. I also agree that
there are many sinceere and talented people associated with the new
age movement, I have met several and am learning a great deal. But
you must admit that the field is ripe for con-men and there are a
lot of people being taken advantage of.
.
There are people that are fraudulent magicians, but I think the
majority are just fascinated by the subject and will get better as
time passes and their skill improves. Most people I have come in
contact who are just starting out admit they are new to the art and
just want to learn all they can, I think we should encourage these
people to the betterment of the art.

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

This lady sounds like the ideal critic or judge. That's what we need
more outside input. Reminds me of a story Eugene Burger told in his
lecture about a table hopping magician that did a card trick for a
lady and in the end her chosen card had his name and number etc. on
it.
She smiled and acted really impressed, and the guy left beaming at
his great magic ability. After he left, she proceeded to tear the
card up and toss it in the ashtray, while explaining that he had
forced a card on her and palmed in a duplicate, all of which she saw
as the guy wasn't very good - but she didn't want to hurt his feeling
s. We need to be aware that sometimes adults just don't want to make
us feel bad, that's why kids magic is so tough - they don't know any
better. If you flash to them you are dead meat.

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 3

       Abbotts - Day 3
.
We went to the under 21 talent contest this morning and given
the recent discussions on contests I wasn't going to comment,
but after seeing it I do want to make three comments.
.
First the future of magic is secure. Several of the young people
were super.
.
Second, one in particular caught my attention because his act,
unlike all other talent contest acts and ALL other professional
acts had a coherency to it. It was staged in an attic with 2x
props and the youth (about 18) played a smaller child. In the
attic was an old and much too large tux and magic props. As
kids are bound to do he put on the tux and picked up the wand
and things began to happen. Little things at first then larger
and all to this kids amazement and surprise. The act ends with
his mother call and like all kids with their hand in the cookie
jar he scrambles out of the tux and off stage. A 10 minute mini
play.
.
The last comment really applies to all of the magi performers,
but I only realized it while watching item 2. The formula for
doing a magic show is identical (with some minor variations) for
almost all the acts. Most (100% at the talent contest and about
80% of the pro's at Abbotts) do a mime act to music only. Most
(All but one of the pro's at Abbotts and all but this one kid)
mindlessly produce a series of miracles with no underlying
substance. They may do it very well, like Brett Daniels from
thursday night, or they may be journeymen like Mercer Helms
who performed tonite, but in the end the act is a series of
disconnected illusions produced solely for you amazement. The
folks with patter do somewhat better at this, but not much.
.
At anyrate, on to todays happenings.
.
The lecture was by Karrel Fox who presented 8-10 tricks all of
which were simple and could be done with common items so he
didn't hawk his wares. Neither did he do a terribly good job.
I understand he is a good magician so maybe indifference
explains it, but he flashed almost every trick during the
presentation of the effect. The fumbling looked more like me
than a seasoned pro. I would like to see him really go at it,
because he has wonderful stage presence and I am sure could do
a fine job.
.
Today was the close up show with four close up acts. all from
Michigan. These people were presented as restaurant
entertainers and any could come to my table anytime. Each 10
minute exercise (all with patter) has humor and magic in almost
equal mix and while the styles were different the results were
not. All did a fine job.
.
The evenings entertainment was hosted by my old friend Terry
Seabrooke who should stick to being an MC and give up
lectures. As MC he was funny and even had kid up on stage
helping him without the abuse presented at the lecture.
.
The first act was Mercer Helms, who presented an
undistinguished journeyman like act of very standard effects.
Ho Hum................
.
Next up was Dave Zimmerman and my how things change. His
act was about a portable hole (the pro exception to contest
comment 2). Items such as golf balls and all sorts of stuff went
in and/or out of a portable hole which is to be a new invention
on the market. Need a hole, buy one sized to fit. Golfing and
going to miss your put, no problem put down a portable hole
drag it to where you need it. Very funny and very well done.
.
Dave was followed by Vito Lupo. Vito did a very classy act
producing doves and silks and cards etc. Classy, but not new.
By the way Vito is to be todays lecturer.
.
Bob Bloenk followed intermission and I hesitate to call him a
magi. 75% of his act was music sing along, but done with a
backdrop of Elvis' mother misunderstanding him and giving him
a guitar instead of the magic kit he wanted. All this lead to
rock and roll, the beatles the decline of the family etc. etc. etc.
Humorous and entertaining. The last quarter of his act was his
impression of Elvis if he became a magician instead of a rock
star. The performance proved the point. By the way, Bob is a
school assistant principal, not a full time performer.
.
David Seebach and Company closed the show with stage style
illusions. Five were presented. "Behind the Scenes" (which
Harry Blackstone presented the night before), "Stretching Lady"
, "Assistants Revenge" and one I don't know the name of where
a small box, maybe 12" cubed is on a larger thin table. It is
unfolded to a larger box a girl gets in vanishes when the box is
folded up and upon reenlarging appears again in a different
costume. The other one I don't know the name of the girl gets
into a cabinet and three boxes, one square, one round and one
triangle are shoved thru along with several rods and apparently
the girl vanishes. Very effective.
.
One more report to go....still no performance by Jim, Vic and
Shag.

The _Royal Ballet_ sounds great. Last bit of entertainment we had
in Charlotte Hall was the installation of our third traffic light.
Entertainment caused by the _rednecks_ skidding to a stop, crashing
into each other, etc. News last week said that on any given weekend
night in St. Maries county that 60% of the drivers are over the
legal alcohol limit. There are three bars for evry church here. That
puts the bartender to preacher ratio the highest in the USA. With
all the burgularies going on around here the DA has suggested that
homeowners take the law into their own hands and no prosecutions
would be made against homeowners who use lethal force defending
their property. No kidding. Talk about surrealism.

Re: MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

Certainly the partnership thing has a point -- the great majority of
businesses and projects fail not because of outside factors but because
of disagreements between partners.

what it is that lives in the kudzu...

Re: NEW AGE MAGIC

Indeed the New Age movement is ripe for con men (and women!) -- but of
course so is politics -- and construction projects -- and
insurance...in terms of the number of people victimized by frauds and
cons, I'd think New Age hucksters would be pretty far down the list.

I think we should make a clear differention between a meditation
teacher (which is what the Maharishi is, after all) and someone like
Sai Baba. We don't think all Christian clergy are like Jim and Tammy
Bakker, do we?....do we?

Re: BOOK

It is indeed true that I am doing a compilation -- not just the gold
and gray series, but also the Mindscripts, the T.A.R.O.T. book, and New
Thoughts For Old; all together about 210,000 words. I have revised the
material quite a bit and made some additions. Right now we are
completing the new illustrations and the book should (he optimistically
said) be available by the end of the year. I will post a message when
it is in existence.

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 3

Great - thanks for the report, Randy. Your others are already in
Europe and heading around the World. The small box unfolded, etc. that
Seeback and Company did is Jim Steinmeyer's Origami (let's hope it is
not a stolen clone!). One thing, if possible -- GET THE NAME OF THE
KID who did the attic bit! It sounds like we should know more about
him. Heck, if you've got spare time and can find him, interview him
for a special report here! Serious -- any info on him would be
appreciated.

It will be a few days - want to test off-line, etc. Also, a guy who
isn't even a member - Wayne Kaufman - no relation to Richard - just
donated an Uninterruptable Power Supply to MAGIC! It will help bridge
the gap between the line power and the generator.

Re: ROBIN BOLTMAN

Perhaps it does have something to do with his being a magician, Max.
With all the talk on here of late regarding the low esteem that magi
seem to be held in by the public, Mr. Boltman may have taken a step in
helping to rectify the seemingly negative image of magic and magi.
I hope so.

If we hit the Maryland Lottery for the 20 million tonight tell the
artist I'll give him double what Milt did. I still think it would
look cool out by the studio/shop/barn. Maybe it doesn't fit in with
the Victorian image of the Magic Castle, but it would work here, plus
you guys would be rid of it.

Double what Milt paid would add up to about a dollar. You'd need the
rest of the twenty million for the UPS charges, though.

Proving, once again, great minds think alike! Bob Elliott is the one
who showed me the mini coils. Would they be available through Dave
Cresey? I tried the double faced bill idea, and creating the cone and
unrolling it later does create the change!
By the way, congratulations on the move to subscription! The check is
in the mail, and good luck with acquiring the new hardware!

Hannah and I attended their production of SWAN LAKE here in Austin last
week. We passed on the option to see the 3 short pieces, as they
sounded a bit abstract! Thanks, by the way, for the articles. I
assume that the return address on the package is good for you, as I
sent you a little goodie. Enjoy!

Thank you for the subscription and for your continued support of
MAGIC!, Michael. Your "behind the scenes" work is also very much
appreciated.

I don't know who carries the thumb-tip coils. I saw 'em at IBM and was
foolish enough NOT to buy some. Maybe someone on here has a source?
If not, I have a paper shredder and with the right paper we could make
our own! Easier (and cheaper) to buy though!

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 3

I would hope by your comments on the kid-in-the-attic act you are not
equating coherency with overt storyline. I fully agree, most magic acts
have no underlying concept, and are not much more than a jumble of
effects done for their own sake, but creating a playlet is but one of
many solutions.

The Sysop has already identified the Origami Box. The illusion using
geometric tubes has been marketed under a variety of names; it is
generically known, in backstage slang, as the Cookie Cutter.

When you refer to "Behind the Scenes" do you mean the Backstage
illusion?
