Re: LECTURES

The Roth Lecture was $25 in advance and $35 at the door. I believe his
book which I unfortunately do not own is in that range.
The Day of Magic seminar was - I believe $40 in advance and I don't
remember how much at the door. Compared to Roth or Castle lectures
they were mini-lectures except for Johnny Ace Palmers which was a two
part lecture. I have never been to a $5 or $10 lecture only the two
above have I paid admission for. (Castle lectures are of course free.)
So in my limited experience of attending lectures they DO cost about
the same as a book.

Re: LECTURACOL

I guess I am asking for more than I should expect to receive from a
lecture. That is why I've decided not to attend any more lectures that
charge a fee that I don't think I'll get my moneys worth out of. As
the years roll by and I will have read the works of the experts in our
field and I will have specific questions to ask, then it would be worth
it to fill in the gaps of my knowledge. Right now I can learn a lot
more from books and my audiences reactions than I can from lectures.

Re: ROTH REVIEW

I believe you are correct in saying they don't want to be called be-g
inners. After all, they have been in magic for years, why should
they know the classic palm. A more successful route (particularly in
the case of a lecturer who depends heavily on sleights such as David
Roth or a cardician, might be "Private" Lessons. Although usually
billed as private, such sessions are really group lessons. A dozen
or so people around a table. This was the approach often used by
Slydini. I think a large group situation will be difficult to bring
off with teaching moves.

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

I don't know what your goals are in magic, but I would recommend that
you spend time being very selective about what you want to learn in
the way of effects to perform. Other than self entertainment, you do
not necessarily need to be able to perform that many effects. Select
a few good effects, perform them well and you will likely enjoy more
success than if you do 50 tricks poorly. Also be sure to get away
from that mirror and with some real people as soon as you can. Use
family or friends if need be, but the real work and timing can only
come with working for people. If you have a video, taping yourself
is also a good approach. Just think...if you weren't so dedicated
you might have been our first "lumpenette"! Good Luck!!

Re: ROTH REVIEW

You continue to awaken memories...
Many years ago when I was in elementary school (a rather small
rural Virginia school) there was an assembly program featuring a
magician. I was enthralled by the performance and was one of the
lucky kids chosen to help carry props out to his vehicle after the
show. I excitedly explained that I had a Mysto Magic Set AND a
Strathmore Magic Table Set and was working on being a magician. The
gentleman was kind enough to give me the address of Douglas Magicland
from whom I might order magic through the mail. He also explained to
me that he had just had a book published but that it would be too ad-
vanced for me. His wife Lilian opened the car trunk and he removed
one from the pile and put it in my hands...it was, of course, the
first edition of Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. I think I now have about
four copies of the book..one of which has almost fallen apart.

Years ago Slydini used to come to San Francisco/Oakland and do a
lecture. With 60 or so in attendance you really only got a taste
of his magic... much of a performance... to learn (teach) Slydini
would set up sessions for no more than 10 at a time. In those he
would sit at the table with everyone -- usually someone's large
dining room table -- and go over every move, every subtlety and
would give each person HANDS ON ASSISTANCE. This is the way!

Re: LECTURES

Pete, I think it is sad that 75% of those attending magic
lectures are not interested in learning magic, that they
just want to be entertained. They should spend their time
at the movies instead and make room for those of us who are
interested in bettering our craft and becoming more enter-
taining ourselves.
Even when I see performances at the Castle I view it from a
students perspective. When I see a performer getting great
audience reaction I want to make sure I know why. Is it his
personality, snappy patter, great magic or some combination
of things? My wife can't understand why I want to see some
of the same performers more than once in the same week.
She goes to be entertained and like someone who has heard a
good joke they don't want to hear it again right away.
Just recently I learned a very good point on doing the Hindu
shuffle bottom force. (Maybe everyone else knows this point
but I didn't) I don't use that as a force because I think it
might be a bit obvious to some people that they ended up with
the bottom card of the deck. I saw this one fellow who
demonstrated to the spectator what he was going to do by
going through the motions of a Hindu shuffle force but what
he was really doing was stripping cards off of the BOTTOM of
the top stock thereby showing a new bottom card each time.
He did this demo rapidly and then just as rapidly forced the
bottom card. I thought it looked great!
About Style, Patter and Presentation, I know we should not
just copy what we see but for the most part if I see a trick
demonstrated which I think is great, and if I can make some
changes to make it more "me" WITHOUT lessening the effect,
then fine I'll make the changes. But changing something just
for the sake of making it different doesn't necessarily make
it better. Like a recipe, sometimes substitutions make it
unpalatable. David Roth's version of Fast and Loose is an
example where I haven't been able to think of any changes I
can make which would not harm the entertainment value of the
effect. Now if I had time to sit around all day and ponder
and work at it maybe someday I could come up with something
to make it better- maybe not. Not to make an excuse for
lazyness, but how many of us magic hobbyists have time today
to devote endless hours in the pursuit of changing something
great into something better? For some people that might be a
noble pursuit and an accomplishment to be proud of if they
are successful. But in the real world here I will in all
likelihood never perform for a lay person who has ever seen
David Roth, a New Yorker, perform. In this case I think if
it ain't broke don't fix it. In my case SOME lines of patter
fit what I am doing better than anything I can think of.
SOME styles of performance are similar enough to my own and
SOME presentations are such that tampering with them in any
way would only dilute the effect I want to create.
Maybe less than 10% of the magic I know and do is exactly as
I have learned it from books or lecturers or whatever.
Sometimes, if the magic fits- do it

Re: LECTURACOL

The general going rate for seminar cassettes does vary - some of the
"set up" seminars - the business ones and motivation ones that are
"free to the public" are based on selling the cassettes and/or books -
do charge more. Most audio cassette programs from
Nightingale-Conant or CareerTrack tend to run about $10 per cassette or
less.

Most business conventions now have a service of selling cassettes of
the actual lectures done live at the convention and these are
generally around $10 per cassette. The reason is that it is basically
note-taking in these cases, no editing, no studio production, and the
price has to be within the "impulse" range. At a convention you might
have 8 or 10 lecturers and it would be unlikely that an individual
would be willing or able to part with several hundred dollars for the
notes.

Re: LECTURACOL

On a superficial level your comment is appropriate. A lecture is one
form of information delivery and, if it is not suited to the
individual's learning style, then they would be best off selecting a
different form.

But my suggestion was aimed at enhancing the value of the lecture
format. The idea behind the suggestion was to expand the "conditions
laid down by the lecturer," not to circumvent them. It was an appeal
to lecturers to think about the concept and to offer it as a method for
improving the service they provide. It was intended to enhance their
income from their presentation and to make the general value of the
lecture mode greater.

Re: ROTH REVIEW

Apparently there _are_ pirate tapes of people - Max mentioned some in
one of his messages. And, apparently, their rarity makes them
valuable. The music industry has recently taken a unique tack in that
some performers have put out their own "pirate" copies and thus ruined
the market for the illegal ones.

Once again, as I mentioned to Max, and I hope this doesn't make you
overly concerned, but a talented unscrupulous individual given today's
existing and commercially available technology could easily create a
pirate video of a lecture - a fairly good one, in fact - and, as the
lecturer, you would never know it had been done. I'm thinking of
starting to sell detectors to lecturers so that they arrive equipped
with counter-measures.

require specific (and extra cost) coverage. We had a flood a few years

Your above comment has annoyed me greatly. The DAY-OF-MAGIC
was not as you say "...a poorly structured event...". In
fact a lot of time and thought was spent structuring the
DAY-OF-MAGIC in such a way to provide the maximum amount of
lectures in one day and yet provide a little something for
everyone at any given time regardless of whether they do
Close-up, Stage, Parlor, etc.... It was never the intent
of the DAY-OF-MAGIC organizers that everyone would see
everything. The DAY-OF-MAGIC provided the attendees with
many choices and like life you must make choices.

I'll agree that the other variety arts are also under-represented on TV
and such, but it's worth noting that their situation is by no means
barren. At any given time there are five to ten casino shows in this
country using ventriloquists and/or jugglers. Michael Moschen performs
his full-evening show in top-quality venues, and had his own PBS
special last January. The Karamazovs have had successful runs on
Broadway, as well as their own specials. David Strassman has had more
television exposure in the past few years than just about any other
variety performer (magicians included). Ronn Lucas has had more than
one series of his own in England.

The "general value of the lecture mode" will be made greater when
lecturers are held to higher standards. Use of video might, in some
cases, be part of this, but not universally.

I've been meaning to comment that the fact that a technology is
"advanced" does not necessarily mean it is "better" -- it depends upon
the context. For instance, an airplane is a more advanced means of
transportation than a bicycle, but not always the most practical one to
choose...

Larry Ellison is proud to be the founder of the most promiscuous
software company ever (his description) -- ORACLE will run on almost
any computer in the world! It would be terrific for those of us who
have the system to support it -- you need at LEAST a 286, 2 meg of
RAM (3 or more is better), and 10 or 15 meg of hard disk space for
just the programs. It also costs about 800 or 1200 $$. There are

When using IMP!, if you specify a reply file name that already

Actually, they DO get written to the file, but the original end-

Re: ORGANIZING

There was a message addressed to me by an organizer of the Day of Magic
event. Unfortunately I somehow lost the thread, so I do not know to
whom I am addressing this, but he was quite annoyed at my comment that
the event had been "poorly organized."

I must point out that I was not in attendance; my comment was based
upon complaints I heard from various people who did. I did not mean to
suggest that the event was _ineptly_ organized, but rather that the
decision to cram so many overlapping lectures into the day was a poor
choice. I thought my meaning was clear, at least contextually; sorry if
it wasn't. I still think the structure is in need of re-thinking,
should another Day of Magic be planned.

Since you are talking about Cindy (I hope she is reading this

Last night I viewed the Gaetan Bloome Close Up video, from Pierre
Mayer, and on the tape was a KILLER, simple to do, almost mechnical
version of FOUR COINS THRU the table... USING LARGE BUTTONS and
not coins. It can be done standing or sitting and IMITATES lapping,
but you don't lap!!!! I like the idea of large buttons. Gaetan
also, on the tape, has a very original and baffling LINKING PIN
routine. It uses a gaff and IS AVAILABLE from Jeff Busby. I have
one here someplace, but had never seen Gaetan do it! He is too
good! Sorry he was away in a show when I was in Paris. He gives
his phone number at the end of the tape so if you are near him
you can call him and visit!

Re: ROTH REVIEW

I have a large link GOLDEN (not gold) chain. I actually like the
old ball chain like they use to pull light bulbs on and off with.
You can use a small loop (about 3 inches across) that you palm, and
tie a false knot in the large loop, when you run your hand over it
you drop the small loop on the table... as if it is THE KNOT come
off! Ken Brooke published a verf good handling, as did Lewis
Ganson. You might research out the "Pricking the Garter" and the
"Belt Loop" variants... (T A says they are mis-named).
.
Do you know where the saying "Cash on the Barrell Head" comes from?
.
The shipside hustlers used to do the belt loop and take the case
off the Barrell Heads that they won gambling.
.
From Soup to Nuts, came from gambling. FARO had a line from Soda
to Hock, which somehow became soup to nuts.
.
Just thought you'd like to know.

We did the same at the Stevens Seminar last time. I don't recall

interest in the other.

No matter what you do... there will be some that think you are wrong

.
I say, "tough"... if they only knew how much work and thought, and
cost went into putting on the major events they would cringe. We at
the IBM have been very lucky, with about 5 or 6 consecutive SOLD
OUT conventions. We always sweat it, though, until the convention
starts... and even more so when it is underway!

Re: GEE WHISKERS

A very interesting question, Scott. Of course we don't know what it
looks like on you or how you relate to it. I suppose it would also
depend on the type of magic you do and your individual performance
style.

I had a beard for many years, although I used to shave it every summer.
I found that people were generally more distant with me when I had it
(although my wife seemed to like it). They seemed to be more
respectful and seemed to expect me to be in charge. I could be more
assertive and they would act like I was supposed to be. As a matter of
fact, I found that each summer, right after shaving it, I would forget
it was no longer there and would get some funny reactions from people
- sort of "who the heck do you think you are?"

On the other hand, I've had some small evidence that infants and very
young children do not react well to people with beards - it almost
seems tribal - fear of the chief.

If you've got a couple of pics - one with, one without - scan 'em in or
sen 'em to me and I'll scan 'em in. Then we can see what everyone
thinks.

Re: LECTURACOL

Apparently, outside of word of mouth, it is difficult to assess the
"general value" or perhaps we should say quality of a lecture. And I
think you are right - the form has a lack of quality in many cases.
Many people do not prepare properly to deliver a quality lecture; but,
then again, many people don't prepare properly to perform either.
Indeed, video-notes might be a help in improving this situation.

I don't recall specifically using the term "advanced," but it is
possible that I did and you are certainly correct - "advanced" does not
mean "better." In the case of video-notes, however, you already know
that I consider video to be a superb technology for this application.

Exactly, T A, a sprig of Kudzu in the audience at the beginning of the
show WILL be the audience by the end of the show. One of its magical
properties is that the plant will appear totally brown and dead in the
winter, then, on a particular day in Spring (a day known only to the
Kudzu) ALL of it will turn green and leafy. You wake up to find that
the entire state is composed only of Kudzu. There are some who say
that it actually spreads during the hibernation period. Others say
that "Cthulhu" is an attempt at saying "Kudzu" while being strangled by
the stuff.

Re: RDMAGIC'S REPLY FILES

I think you just filed one - but it really should go to JERRY BURTON,
not to me. Why, however, would you want to append new replies or
appends or enters to a file you had already sent? Doing so would
result in duplicate messages being sent to MAGIC! (Assuming, of course,
that you had already sent the first file).

There is a way around this by using a naming convention. Different
people use different conventions. I like to name the captured message
file (the one downloaded FROM MAGIC!) by using MAGInnnn.CAP where nnnn
is the date in month-month-date-date format (0816 for today, for
example). I name the outgoing file, the one containing messages I am
sending back to MAGIC! by using MAGInnnn.OUT (where nnnn is the same as
above - month-month-date-date). That allows me to keep 'em straight
(assuming I have only one of each per day) and to easily find them on
my system - I can search for ones to/from MAGIC! by doing DIR MAGI*.*,
or I can search for all files with a 0 in the fifth position (I use
this since I have files for several different systems named in the same
manner) by using DIR ????0*.* or I can search for all CAPTURED files -
DIR *.CAP or all outgoing files - DIR *.OUT, etc.

I don't know where the magic sales information you mention would be
captured. IRS must get some of it from magic dealers. They might
get some of it from performers. I believe the Department of Commerce
is the likely agency to release information such as your quote. The
problem is that magic income is such a small amount, I wouldn't think
they focus on it at all. Most likely it gets lumped into a larger
catagory. I thought you were asking about the ratios of income that
a dealer/performer would realize. There are so few of those that a

Re: ROTH REVIEW

All these "lecture" messages are raising some interesting issues, but
we seem to be foundering around a bit. In truth, many so-called
magic lectures are not lectures at all. They don't teach much of any
thing at all. They are more of a Show-and-Tell event wherein the
"lecturer" performs an effect and then exposes it. Someone (I think
it was Max) correctly made the point that most of the magician
audiences are primarily interested in seeing a trick done and then
being told the secret, NOT in learning anything.
Would there be a benefit if we established certain catagories of
"lectures" to be used in booking and advertising them. For instance:
A:  Performance ONLY lecture - no tipping only performance;
B: Lectures on Concepts - no tricks per se, just principles, and
related areas such as promotion, stage craft, etc.;
C: The Standard Ten Trick Show and Tell Lecture - complete with
notes giving bare bone explanations of the ten tricks.
...and so on.
Personally, and I am really not interesting in arguing any of this
with anyone 'cause it is MY opinion only, I stopped going to most
lectures a long time ago because I got tired of seeing an effect and
then having to sit through an explanation of something I already
understood from having seen the performance, particularly when the
explanation took three or four times longer than the effect and was
sometimes used to "pad" the lecture. Another downside was the fact
that lectures were often asked to explain very basic moves which were
only of minor importance in routines. I am sure this was equally
frustrating to the lecturer as well. Personally, I think such
questions would be better left until after the lecture. Most
lecturers seem quite willing to assist folks with questions on moves
and other matters at the end of the lecture, particularly when the
note selling is completed.
I (again, this is MY opinion) would much prefer to see a "lecture" be
basically a performance and maybe a discussion of the performers
thinking behind what he does. Sort of a "Magus in Concert" type
thing. If the performer wished to sell individual effects or a
program of his performance with annotations that would be OK since
some income is probably needed to make the performance affordable to
magic clubs. My point is that I don't want to be taught moves and
sleights at a lecture. I want to see a performers approach, his
style, his concepts. I dearly love to be fooled! ...and I enjoy
staying fooled awhile so that my feeble brain is forced to think...I
certainly don't want the secret dumped out in front of me in the next
five minutes. Anyone worthy of calling themselves a magicians should
be able to devise a solution to any effect on their own anyhow! Who
knows? That solution might even be superior to the one used by the
lecturer. I wish lectures were more of a stimulus and motivational
force in magic...not just show and tell sessions.
I think I started talking about the need for definition of what a
magic lecture is and then got off on a tangent...since I feel the
urge to go off on another tangent regarding why folks woud want to
learn a highly individualized routine (such as most of David Roth's)
move for move, I will stop! Pete was hitting at this topic in some
of his messages, but I haven't seen anyone pick up on it yet.

Re: VIDEO AGAIN

A standing ovation for a clear and concise statement of the taping
issue!
There is one thought in there that I think worthwhile to be revisited
on this "electronic party line". If I might quote "If a given
producer does not want to hire me because of it, or a potential
attendee elects not to come, that's fine with me. If they want to
participate in my lecture work, however, it is on my terms." While
I happen to agree with your position, I wish to address the larger
problem of the failure of producers and performers to agree on what
is being bought, particularly within the context of booking talent
for magic conventions. There is certainly ample sin of both sides of
this issue to substain a new discussion. Your excellent statement of
your position just triggered off a long latent concern on an area
badly in need of attention.

Re: TRIX

OK here is the new trick. Actually it is a sleight of hand variant
on a marketed item by Gaetan Bloome. First buy the trick from a
dealer (I think Joe Stevens is the only one authorized to sell it),
then send me proof of purchase and I will tell you how to do the
trick without the gaffed deck.
.
Effect: "What No Wall". A card chosen, a thumbtack put into the sie
(er SIDE) of the deck... you say you will slam the deck against a
solid object and the tack will find the card. You SLAM the deck to
your FOREHEAD and the card is 'tacked' in place.
.
OK, I wanted to do this with a LARGE ROOFING NAIL. The gaff will
only work with a tack (this is fine, just that "I" wanted to use a
bigger nail!
.
So since Gaetan's modus operandi will not accompany a big nail, I
had to come up with an all new method. And in doing so, when the
trick is over... you are left with a NON GAFFED DECK and can do
other things.
.
OK, now, according to your penalty I still have to post a trick
for ALL, so... give me a half a day... I'll return with a major
miracle. (Hoping Max divulges handling of his Hindu Shuffle).

I have seen several magic acts that produce feather flowers and do
the Mango Tree (?) and the blooomin feather dusters... these acts
seem to run long enough to take advantage of a production of
Kudzu.
.
The way I would do it... have a flower pot filled with fertile soil.
Kudzu is just a point where it don't show... Cover the pot with a
large metal tube. Make few false attempts to produce something,
then go on to other stuff. At end of act... you say, "Oh, I forgot
to do the tube trick!" Go over, lift tube and show the incredible
bush that has appeared!
.
Give it, as a gift, to the Juggler on the show. So that next day
he cannot get into his dressing room, hence not do is act, thusly
not steal the show from you!

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

In truth, you are possibly right - increasing age leads to some
decrease in "tolerance," although I'm not necessarily sure I know the
full meaning of the word. Graduate school is indeed a place to make
sure that one engages in "politically correct" thinking about one's
field. It is designed to force you into a set mold and to focus you so
narrowly on your specialty that you will not look to other disciplines
for answers.

But that is philosophy and this is MAGIC! So maybe your comments will
trigger a discussion of whether or not magic should look outside itself
for inspiration or whether it is so specialized that the look should
only be inside itself.

I don't believe there is a standing body of Mavenettes, I think they
are formed ad hoc as the need arises. I'm not sure that three is a
particularly sacred number in this case - as I recall it was presumably
triggered by budgetary requirements and not by aesthetic
considerationns. Three, of course, is a reasonable number for
Mavenettes - along with Max and a driver they will fit nicely into a
car, it works well at resturants where the majority of tables are
designed for parties of four, etc. But I can only speculate - for the
real info you gotta ask Max.

There is still some confusion over what is in which edition of which

by Ireland/Magic Inc. in 1966; only 14 years after the original edition
of "Modern Coin Magic" and 13 years BEFORE the copyright ran out on
"Modern." Goshman, Hayden, Judah, Tannen (Louis), Mulholland, Hamblen,
Buffaloe, James and Harrison are all mentioned in the acknowledgements

added material due to the copyright thing, then that would have to be

Kraybog one at the Hotel de Carlo in June of this year. And I don't
recall wasting everyone's time asking about basic moves.

The problem with a lot of your stuff, Pete, is that it is ephemeral.
Until you get the 600 books out there is little for future scholars to
look back on and say, "Ah! THAT was Biro!" And I think that a LOT of
your material belongs ON VIDEO. Think about how you horde those
precious snippets of Kaps video, etc. Talk to Joe about a Biro video
- if necessary, I'll help do the production.

It does sound like a great idea, Pete. And I hope that someone (or a
few someones) will take you up on your offer - proof of purchase from
Joe and you will send the ungaffed version. But, frankly, I don't do
card to forehead with or without tack. It just doesn't fit my
personality. OK, OK, maybe I do boat-to-forehead in the privacy of
"bathtime" with Nathan (he loves the effect) and, on very rare
occassions, pizza-to-forehead when he needs cheering up, but it just
isn't my kind of public effect. I DO appreciate the offer though.

Re: RDMAGIC'S REPLY FILES

Being able to continue the same reply file is actually quite useful if
you don't have the time to reply to all of your new messages in one
sitting -- especially if you've been away for a few days and have a
pile of message to wade through. It allows you to bop in and out of
IMP and create one reply file to upload when you're through.
.
In any case, it's probably best if the program would tell you up front
if you've entered a duplicate name and offer you the option of
specifying another name, or overwriting or appending the existing file.
.
To just have your messages completely disappear is a little
disconcerting (Tommy didn't know about Norton Utilities and lost a few
rather large replies). When it happened to me I read the file through
Norton and discovered that my new replies WERE there, but the original
end-of-file marker hadn't been removed.
.
Note that this doesn't happen ALL of the time -- only about 50% or so.

Re: MARVYN ROY

A very pleasant evening. Traveling incognito as a tourist from Toronto
(hope our Canadian members will excuse me, it is a line from a
commercial currently running in Los Angeles) the family went to the
Landings Resturant at the Airtel Plaza (7277 Valjean Ave., Van Nuys,
Ca. - just off Sherman Way) where, on Friday nights from 6 to 9 p.m.
MARVYN ROY is the table-hopping house magician. Marvyn came over to
our table and did a beautiful show which had Nathan utterly enthralled.
Lots of good stuff including a nice Professor's Nightmare.

I'm a member of the Marvyn and Carol Roy Fan Club. To me they are
consumate performers - always friendly and personable with GREAT
presentation. And they are real troopers - once I tipped my disguise
Marvyn told me the story of some of what happened at Abbotts - seems
that just before going on stage, Carol FELL and tore TWO LIGAMENTS in
her leg. She didn't tell Marvyn until AFTER the show. The paramedics
were called and they put her on a gurney for transport to the hospital.
But, when she heard that they were about to be presented an award, she
insisted on being wheeled on stage! THEN she agreed to go to the
hospital!

Dinner was very good to excellent - I had chicken breast stuffed with
apples and pistachio nuts, Anita had Weinerschnitzel. Both were very
good and were beautifully served on plates loaded with a variety of
perfectly cooked vegetables. Nathan also thought highly of the veal.
There were a variety of very nice deserts available, including a killer
Rocky Road Cake. Dinner was in the $13 to $16 menu price category with
the Rocky Road Cake being extra.

A very nice evening. Those who are in the area who want to stop by
should check to make sure Marvyn is there on any particular Friday
night, as they do travel. For information and reservations you can
call the Airtel at (818) 997-7676.

P.S. - Once Marvyn recognized me, he showed me a great torn and
restored cigarette paper effect - no thumb tip, no switch, and a
spectacular conclusion.

Re: LANCE

Regarding the design of the box, it is not the same paintjob as on the
Henning one; in fact, it's not even the same box -- Lance built this
one himself. The whole point of the design is that it is meant to look
like a typical magician's prop, rather than Lance's customary style --
go back and listen to the intro, where he refers to it with the
intentionally ludicrous title of "The Purple Box of Death."

The trick, by the way, is the creation of Jim Steinmeyer, although when
Lance bought the rights he modified the method. The effect is,
obviously, based on the classic Backstage illusion originally performed
by Dante. The painted audience backdrop plus the hand-clapping gag are
straight out of the Dante routine.

By the way, the backdrop Lance used on the Tonight Show appearance is
the one that was done for him when he broke the routine in at the
Tropicana. (It as too large for the Hacienda stage, so he had to have
another one painted.)

There's an in-joke on the backdrop, which you can spot if you look
carefully when he pulls away the drape on the table. There, sitting in
the painted audience (visible under the table) is Doug Henning.

If I was doing Abbotts, I would bring my own sound system. From others
who hav been going there far longer than I the sound system is a
perennial problem. If you are willing to lay out a few thousand for
publicity photo's you should part with a like amount for a decent sound
system. For the kind of music played with most magic shows huge
speakers are not a requirement as the deep clean bass is not a must, a
decent bass and clear strong mid range and highs are achievable with
some fairly portable speakers and a couple of hundred watts well placed
will do any indoor auditorium.
.
You raise an intersting point in the Europe bit and other venues. I am
going to upload a philosophical treatise based on my abbotts experience
and I again critize the high proportion of music only acts. FOr Europe
is this because of the language barrier. I don't know, maybe the
contstraints on magic performance today force the look alike aspect of
most acts, but I hope not.

Re: ABBOTTS - REPRISE

          ABBOTTS RECAP
.
We are just back from a fine vacation in northern Michigan. We
had the boat up to Charlevoix and gedunked around Grand
Traverse Bay, Lake Charlevoix and Little Traverse Bay for four
days. Evenings were in a two bedroom luxury suite where the
loft bedroom had a jacuzzi. (guess which BR Marilyn and I got
and which the kids got). Great time.
.
I had the opportunity to think about the Abbotts Get Together
a little deeper than in my daily dispatches. These comments fit
into two broad areas. 1) organization and 2) magic
performances.
.
Organizationally too little takes up too much time. A typical
day goes from 9:00am to 10:30pm or 13.5hrs. A breakdown of
used time looks like this.
.
Day WedThuFriSat
.
Lecture 1 1 1 1
Talent Contest 2 2
Show 2.5 2.5 2.5 2.5
Matinee 1
Special Event 1
Lunch 1 1 1 1
Dinner 1.5 1.5 1.5 1.5
Total 6.0 8.0 8.0 8.0
.
This leaves 5.5 hours per day to wander the dealers showrooms
(takes 1 hr 1 day at most due to lack of space this year) and to
gab with your friends. It gets very long by Sat. The Get
Together would be improved significantly by the addition of
more material such as workshops, dealer demonstrations,
additional lectures, open performance times for those who want
to hone stage skills or any of a number of other things to help
fill that time.
.
In the area of magical performances far too many acts looked
alike. I got an nearly uncontrollable urge to bring my 12ga shot
gun and use the next dive that was produced and thrown out
over the crowd for target practice and I wanted to plant a bomb
in the next vanishing bird cage that was brought on stage.
Seriously, at least 5 acts involved the production of a number of
doves that were subsequently vanished in the cage. Back Stage
with the Magician was performed twice professionally and once
in the talent contest.
.
About 80% of the acts were to music alone where one trick
simply followed the next. ( On reflection however, this did not
bother me nearly so much with the pure prestidigitation acts
like Ray Wilcox as it did with the silk/dove/apparatus acts).
.
The conformity to a certain pattern or formula or more
accurately a few different sets of patterns was palpable. In this
respect the magic fraternity is very much like the photographic
fraternity. I used to belong to a camera club and the PSA and
all that good stuff and you seen exactly the same pattern I am
seeing in magic. Conformance to a formula is valued above all
and followed by nearly all, professional and amateur alike.
.
For the amateur (looking back at the contests) this takes the
form of encouraging a very high level of technical skill applied
against a rather narrow range of artistic options. One of the
most beautiful pictures I have ever seen was taken by a
Canadian amateur of a black girl in a black bolero hat with a
gold embroidered rim. Done low key against a chocolate
backdrop only a hint of the facial outline was visible along with
dark cherry lips and a hat band that looked like ruddy
burnished bronze. I failed in club competition badly because
"portraits shouldn't be dark". Likewise the young man at the
contest failed with a low key act that showed artistic creativity
in favor of other acts that met formula.
.
For the professional this means a large body of journeyman
photographers who again may be very good in a narrow range
and only a few who dare or are able to breakout into being
really creative.
.
Abbotts certainly did not do anything to convince me that this
analysis is incorrect. There were flashes of creativity. Brett
Daniels produced birds (big ones) and sometimes with an off
beat reason (to find a selected card) but they were few and far
between.
.
Painting went through a similar stage a couple of hundred years
ago when the French Classical School ruled the roost. The you
painted with an "S" curve composition, in muted tones and
pastels, pastoral scenes or portraits or you didn't paint. Then
in the nineteenth century along came the Impressionist School
who turned the art world upside down and I doubt few of us
would argue that the revolution wasn't for the better. Magic
needs its Monet's et al and needs them badly. People who will
at once be creative and break the formula's and who will and
can lead. And hopefully as the Impressionist School was soon
followed by the Post Impressionists, Cubist's, Pointillists,
Surrealists, Abstractionists, etc, etc, so to magic will begin to
flower in a number of new and creative directions.
.

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 4

Sorry Randy, but I happen to think that there are far too many talking
acts. I've seen many magicians do some WONDERFUL effects and then
totally destroy their image by insisting on talking -- Copperfield and
Pendragon are two biggies that come to mind, and the amateurs and
semi-pros are far worse. Too many magicians think that knowing how a
trick works makes them qualified to perform it, and a large number of
the pros out there have absolutely no stage training or voice coaching.
.
Given that, they should leave well enough alone and not destroy their
image by opening their big mouths!
.
I just thought of another one: Rocco! As charming as his accent is
in some respects, his manner of speaking does not at all match the
persona he has created.

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 4

I will agree with part of what you say -- there ARE far too many
talking acts, to the point where a lot of people think magicians are
guys who stand at mikes and chatter on, every so often getting around
to an effect. Copperfield? I think it's WHAT HE SAYS and his apparent
motivation: at the dramatic presentation of illusions he may be the
best around -- but he seems to want to be thought a comedian (or may be
he is simply afraid of being taken seriously), and when he does that
stuff he is interchangeable with a thousand lesser lights.
Pendragon I have gone round and round with -- yes, he does have a
very slight speech impediment, but that ain't the problem; it is that,
as with so many, he will rehearse and script the movements exactly BUT
NOT THE WORDS. When he is doing stuff he has solidly scripted, he's
fine; I don't think anyone gets more out of the Linking Finger Rings
than he does, and that's a talking piece.
I used to ask people what they thought of magicians and when, not
unusually, the response was negative, I asked what it was they didn't
like -- and always got the same two answers: "They all do the same
tricks" and "They talk too much."
I also hear magicians say, "Hey, any trick they haven't seen is new"
-- apparently these people haven't been informed of the invention of
TV; most people have seen a lot of magicians -- and since magic, by its
nature, is at least supposed to be special, they tend to remember when
they've seen stuff before.
Ah, it's little old going-off-at-a-tangent me, isn't it?

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 4

It was not my intent to damn music/mime acts per se, but rather to
complain that so many magi follow a formula of a string of effects/
unrelated, but showy done to music only as the show format. Mime has
its place, music only has its place and voice has its place. I would
also comment that maybe magi need to get voice training. We are first
of all entertainers (who entertain with magic) and we need to do what
needs be done to entertain our audience. I personally am not very
entertained by a string of effects done to music (or to poorly done
voice either).
.
What I would like to see is magi be more creative and understand their
role as entertainer better so that when I go the next Abbotts and see
16-20 acts in 4 nites I see 16-20 different acts, not 3 or 4 acts done
3 or 4 ways each with a couple of gems thrown in.

Re: MAGICXDB

I have read with interest the thread on using MAGICxDB or some other
vehicle to produce a large magic database, cross referenced and all
that. I am not sure how well my program can be adapted to do that and
still retain its original (and still primary) purpose of being a
working to to assemble shows from a working trick list and to perform
other basic show related housekeeping matters. Of primary importance
to me when I wrote it was 1) ease of use, 2)speed, 3)clarity of
function. MAGIC3DB will add archive for books and tricks but is still
not aimed at what you were talking about.
.
While BASIC was and is the best language for doing what I had n mind
(ie you can't do the user interface I use in any dB program I know) it
may not be best for large dB work for the following reasons:
   1) Upper limit on entries 32000 or so, system set and I cant change
   2) limit of 64k string space. This palces and even more stringent
limit on in RAM index files and making those files disk based slows
things to a crawl. MAGIC3DB keeps its performance by splitting the
trick database into an index file and a datafile with only the index in
RAM. Older versions have the entire dB in RAM.
.
PARAGON, dBASE IV, ORACLE or some other database program might be
better for what you have in mind.
.
Also do you see the program running inside MAGIC!, a program that
accesses a database that resides on MAGIC! or the downloading of the
database from MAGIC!.
.
Send me your thoughts on this and maybe we can discuss this some more.
I am very interested in the project.
.

and I do agree that the limitations under which it operates probably
preclude its (and BASIC's) use for this proposed project. On the other
hand, as you mentioned, it does have a wonderful user interface. I'm
going to come up with a way for the "committee" to meet here on MAGIC!
without getting in the way of the general topics. That will allow for
more consideration of the design. Will work out a plan for electronic

Instead of BRINING your own sound equipment... you should have a
'RIDER' in your contract that specifies a "MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
QUALITY" for the sound system.
.
Many acts, to work year around, must have one that has NO LANGUAGE
BARRIER, hence the 12 minute TO MUSIC format. However, when booking
a series of shows, like a magic convention, one should work out
the PROPER balance. Of not only SILENT VS. TALK, but SOLO vs. Group,
Man only, vs. BOY GIRL, Fast vs. slow, IN ONE vs. FULL STAGE.
.
IT AIN'T EASY. IT TAKES ME MORE THAN A YEAR TO BALANCE AND BOOK

Re: ABBOTTS - REPRISE

Interesting analogy... enjoyed your reporting and thoughts. See a
few of my messages re: content, sequence of acts, balance, etc.
.
Many magic bookers don't even understand their jobs. You can't,
and shouldn't book all 10s, you have to go up and down in speed,
quality, style, etc. so the GOOD UNs come out even better. We can
set a line up to build a certain act into a KILLER on one show, that
goes over MEDIUM GOOD in another line up. I have a great example.
.
We had an act set to be 2nd from closing on a "middle night". The
act believed he belonged on the FINAL NIGHT... THE BIG SHOW....
So, "all of a sudden the props were missing... the airlines has
lost them... I can't work without them..." So we changed the line
up for two shows, moving this act to last night and an act from
last to middle show.... Act moved to last night did POORLY....
it was the wrong place for him. He would have been the STRONGEST

Gee, I thought others would have noticed that he is, indeed, a

Yup, the gambling kinda guys really do it differently.
.
Wonder how many have ever seen a guy run up a deck in a real game?
.
Is more than magic! When I watched a real cheat dealing crooked
Black Jack at a Casino (he told me when he would be on the floor
and how to act while watching him) I was the scariest thing I have
ever seen with cards!!!!!!!!
.
Two trips ago a Casino Manager was standing with me at the bar, an
old codger came over, started to talk. Took a liking to me. Asked
the MGR if I was "OK", Mgr. said, "No problem" -- one nod to a pit
boss and we had a deck of cards. This old feller commenced to deal
bottoms (He showed me later) on a barstool, while holding a drink,
and/or a cigarette from time to time... that, er, well, uh, made
the line "don't play cards with strangers" REALITY!!!!!!!!!!
.

Re: LANCE

Thank you for the real story. With Henning's illusions being sold
and the close visual similarity, most of us would have arrived at
the same assumption.

Call me old fashioned, but I still prefer Lance's silent
routines. Lynn's and Randy's recent messages regarding silent vs.
spoken routines said it quite well. Although Lance does have a
good speaking voice, I didn't think he had the time on this show
to establish his character. I would have preferred to see him
open with one of his classical routines, followed by a brief
"Thank you" interlude leading into his finale. This is just my
personal preference. In his new show he has all the time he needs
to establish his character, and that's fine. I'm glad that the
people in Las Vegas are seeing his name on the marquee. For all
those years at the Trop, most people didn't know he even existed.
I was just asked today about "that Lance Burton guy" wondering
who he was and if he was any good!

I agree! If he insists on speaking,Franz should at least lose the
headset. That contraption on his head does nothing but detract
from the show. I wonder if he is receiving cues from somewhere?
Even so, a lavalier mike and an earpiece would be much less
distracting. I can't help remembering Sinead O'Connor on one
award show when her headset receiver went dead she had to hum
along to her own song!

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 4

Franz is a creative and talented guy, but seems to loose the mystique
when he speaks. But I was just thinking about it and maybe it isn't
Franz or Lance (as in the comments you made to Max), maybe it is the
ALTERNATION between speaking and silent that is a problem, especially
if you start out silent. In thinking about it, I have viewed MOST of
the "now I'm coming up front to talk to you" bits in shows that begin
with a silent portion as distracting and disapointing. It seems to me
that if you watch the Copperfield specials, he does the reverse - he
starts out talking and then goes back to do a single illusion and then
returns to talk to you. He develops the rapport UP FRONT and is
clearly the performer - the illusions can't take the show away from him
because he is already a friend. You can excuse him not talking while
"working" because he looks awfully busy, but then he comes back to talk
to you. Quite a difference from the feeling that "I'm interrupting
this show so I can tell you something."

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 4

For me the problem with a lot of the illusionists who do speaking
parts is the abrupt change in character. Usually the change is from
a strong character to a kind of dorky one. Their manner of speaking
tells me that they feel out of place.
.
As Biro said a few messages ago, Copperfield has been getting better
over the years. Up to a few years ago he seemed very unsure of his
persona during his speaking parts, and it made me very uncomfortable
at the time. Now he at least seems much more sure of himself, but
he still doesn't seem to really know who he is. He's doing other
people's material, including their patter (Seabrook's burned bill
routine for one), rather than deciding what his character really is
and only doing material that falls within its boundaries.
.
How many silent movie stars bit the dust when talkies were invented
because their voices were out of character with their screen persona?

I think it is a matter of organization - too many people do the silent

change of character.

Also, as someone mentioned (sorry if I've slighted someone, but it is
late and I'm tired) - few work on the speaking part as hard as they do
on the silent part. You called it "dorky" and that's a pretty good

Re: ABBOTTS - REPRISE

Having booked my share of shows, I'll agree with everything with one
exception. I concur, a good show must have varied styles, pacing,
concepts, emotional levels and so on -- but I don't think there is any
justification for varied _quality_. Mind you, I fully realize that the
budget and scheduling for a given show often necessitates making
compromises, and there are times when one is forced by circumstances to
include acts of lower quality (although hopefully even then not much
lower...). But in a hypothetical show I can't imagine how you would
feel there was any validity to booking any other than top-quality acts.
The notion that weaker acts will make a strong act stand out is, I
believe, misguided.

Perhaps I misread your message.

Re: GAMBLING ROUTINES

Yes... the guts. Charlie Miller also had a great comment. "Most of
these so-called gambling expert card men DO NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO
PLAY CARDS."
.
I know. When I started to play poker with real people... the modus
of action changed beyond belief. It is sooooo easy to glimpse cards
and stack (simple things like a pair of jacks) etc. that you wonder.
Nobody in a real game (I am not talking about the "controlled"
Casino Poker Rooms) is really on the lookout for things. I used to
do false shuffles, palm cards in and out, etc. for fun, not using
them or stacking, just to do the stuff for the excercise. But
almost none of the things done on that turf related to the control
of a close up demonstration show, etc.
.
I also modified the Haskell Gambling act and did it for laymen with
gags, etc. thrown in.

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 4

Another thing that the "old masters" (?), Blackstone, Dante, etc.
had were costume changes to "really" change character. Blackstone,
in particular, had a GREAT and COMMANDING voice...

Re: TAYTELBAUM

Sure glad Eddy is coming over, but sorry he is not coming to
California.... I hope some of our Eastern folk can work something
up for him... Bill Wells maybe, who is in Washington DC, but knows
the Old Coast very well. If you speak to Eddy, give him my regards
(Pete Biro) -- and if you see Phoa, the same, thanks for the message
