Re: ABBOTTS - REPRISE

You (I don't think) "missed" my message. Granted if I was doing
a ONE or TWO night booking of shows, no problem, the quality would
be of the highest calibre. But when you have FOUR nights, and
unfortunatley SOME political pressure, it is tough to find the
quantity of acts at Level X and above... and in particulat as MANY
that the attendees have either NEVER SEEN or have not seen in at
least three, four years. And sometimes a LESSER QUALITY in my eyes
isn't really a bad act. I just might be a common type, doves, canes,
candles with good presentation, but not great.... I didn't mean to
imply a TRULY LOUSY ACT....
.
I have been BITTEN a few times. And maybe will go down in history
for booking the worst act ever.... DR. MAGIC. But I will defend my
right to book acts like his (from the audition tape there looked to
be a very exciting and different potential) in an effort to keep
the style of magic moving (hopefully forward) ... I think I won it
all back with Vodvil 2000 -- but then there were some who told me
Vodvil 2000 was the worst magic show they had ever seen!!!!!!! But
interviewing TEEN AGERS leaving the show, one group said, "Magic
show or music show.... THIS was the BEST SHOW we have ever seen!"
.
Any comments from you on talking points of the illusion acts being
disected here on line?

Re: LANCE

Prof. Erwin Corey is a good example. And I see your point about the
Copperfield modified Chavez school idea. But I don't think it is
necessary to copy Copperfield. A good example of a play on the tux
would be Tomsoni. His outfit is PERFECT for a "Polish Magician." The
price tag on the sleeve is a killer.

Key point, I think, is that clothes have to match the personality. I
tend to do tux or business suit. Don't know if it is really right, but
I usually play older crowds and figure that the combination of the
conservative clothes and the somewhat longish hair that I have creates
a reasonably confusing statement that goes with my brand of comedy and
magic. I don't think I could work in a T-shirt.

Yes, I think the key point is that the speaking has to be as well
thought out as the rest. It has to help make the personality and help
establish the magician. Too many seem to regard it casually.

Paragon is Borland's relational database and is excellent. A agree
about about dBIV (i own it but never use it as I think it is crap) dB
III+ is much better, but dBASE needs to be considered for the project
because of its wide use. There are many better dB programs, but none
have reached the audience that dBASE has and a system written in RDBMS
that does not have wide availability will either require expensive
run-time modules or be still born. So polling our potential user base
as to what they have/want/are willing to spend etc is going to be
important....Randy

Re: ABBOTTS - REPRISE

I haven't made any comments on the subject of illusionists who decide
to talk, for the simple reason that I think the discussion is totally
off the point.

It is quite true that many illusionists who start off as silent acts
and later add talking end up with mediocre results, but what is being
missed in the current discussion is the _reason_ they start talking,
which is worth noting. It is this: a silent performer can develop and
sustain a relationship with an audience within the context of a short
act, but once the performance expands past approximately ten minutes it
is virtually impossible to keep that rapport without talking.
Contemporary audiences lose contact without the spoken word. Now, the
performers under consideration (Copperfield, Harary, Pendragon, Burton,
et al) are all working in just such extended-length shows. Therefore,
to approach a discussion of their talking with the notiont that they
should remain silent is fruitless. They _must_ talk; to remain silent
would be commercial suicide.

Re: RESEARCH

Probably won't use a database program in the Dbase sense. Would go
with a custom file layout, using a B-Tree search (B-Tree means
balanced tree, and is quite quick on retrieval - but can be rather
time consuming on update. Since the updating would be done off-line
in a kind of batch mode - that should not be a big problem).
.
MOst PC databases are designed to be used for general purpose data
management and try to allow to balance retrieval and update to
accommodate the most users. It seems to me this project would require
a creation program for use on each person's PC and the resulting file
s would be sent to MAGIC! for merging into the larger database.
.
For on-line retrieval you want the fastest algorithm going, even if
it is slow on the update.
.
If the project gets off the ground we can experiment with different
approaches. The C libaries I use have several different methods of
storing and retrieving data, so we can see what works best.

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 4

The Amazing Jonathon is playing to the worst aspects of the comedy
club audience, i.e. people actively going out of their way to be
insulted and made to look like jerks.
.
I saw him once live in Tahoe and he had a combo Gallager (getting
stuff all over the 1st few rows) and Rickles (out and out rudeness,
and insults) mixed with some very long boring magic. I saw him
recently on the Comedy Hour and he drew the one trick out so long
no one had any idea what it was supposed to have proved, plus he's
into all kinds of blood and knives.
.
The fact that he works a lot and is currently during his 'Blood and
Guts' tour, tells you something about the type of audiences available
tody. He would make a great opening act for the Diceman !

Re: SUBSCRIPTIONS

WOW! That was a FANTASTIC compilation of data! How'd you do it?
Interesting about the page count - the subscription rate is $30 a year,
about the same as any of the magazines, and while I would not even
pretend to discuss quality, in quantity it would appear that each month
we deliver more text than ALL of them put together!

We do have some exciting plans for MAGIC! in the offing - plans that
can only see fruition if we get established on a solid base. Will the
current subscription plan deliver? I don't know - sure hope so! As in
anything, there are a lot of folks here who only read, never write.
Just like the active vs. inactive ratios in any organization. If the
readers send in their subscriptions and stay with us, then it may work
- no profit, but the hardware, etc. If they don't, well, we'll just
have to keep trying. The subscription deadline is REAL.

Yes, we have gotten an influx of new registrants from the advertising
at Abbotts. Also several new members from Genii and other
publications.

Still boggling over the data!

In a word, yes. An absolutely astounding, inspiring group of effects
by genuine Stars in the field. Some of the stuff is more workable than
others, but you probably will never get so many fantastic, well
thought-out, do-able effects between two covers. To my knowledge they
were published separately, so what you're getting is the fruit of this
entire series, done over years, in this ludicrously inexpensive tome.

I do know what B-trees are! You would seem to be reinventing the
wheel if you're going to write all this stuff from scratch. This
is ONLY data (I worked on the BART -Bay Area Rapid Transit - train
control system and they had their own dbms to run the trains -
in this case NECESSARY for speed)!
.
FYI: the system I'm currently working on is a database for telephone
sales people (speed is essential to them as they have their customer
on the phone at the time), our three main tables have about 500,000
rows each, and another table that is regulrly usd has over 2.5
MILLION rows! Searching this table takes split seconds with
proper use of the indexes. Whichever dbms you choose to go with,
you need to make sure you hire someone who really knows how to make
the thing jump through hoops -- most programmers out there don't.
.
Some companies are doing amazing things with distributed databases,
but I don't think they're too good on performance yet.

Re: GAMBLING ROUTINES

What about a magician who is or has been a "gambler". It is
possible. Also, who is going to get the most attention, a magician
who does gambling card tricks or a gambler, reformed gambler, etc
who is showing the "real work". Sometimes ya just gotta play the
part.
Also, there is quite a difference between a gambling "expose" and
a gambling "demonstration". Anyone can expose how "deals" are
suppose to be done, but how many can REALLY do them and honestly
get away with it (be it in magic or at the table). It would be one
thing to expose a hold out machine, but quite another story to
REALLY use one where "the most critical observer would not even
suspect, let alone detect, the action."

Re: "STAMP"

As I am sometime prone to do, I was overstating the case just a bit.
Yes, we can accommodate putting "The Great" on quite a few and we
realize that the field can be left empty without problems. We are
constantly asked to make the names on the badges larger (this is to
be expected with a membership median age in the mid thirties and
going higher each year). We also are asked to place the hometown and
state of the registrant on the badge. These two factors make the
addition of such titles as TWGM somewhat of a problem on many of the
badges. We find it is easier to simply let those that insist hand
letter their own badges. You would be amazed how many opinions folks
have about size of badges, types of badges, whats on the badges, etc
and so forth. Many would like to return to the military type badges
of yesteryear. Interesting that such a seemingly small item can end
up requiring quite a bit of time, effort, and expense. We have tried
many variations and it still continues to evolve.

What made it superiour to salt? Well it is flesh colored. It is
much finer and it seems to me each individual grain is perfectly
round... thus giving much greater "movement" ability. It would be
like having ROLLER BEARINGS between two cards. As I recall, using
this stuff -- when I had some that Ken Brooke gave me to try out --
you could place a deck (with the stuff between two cards, the chosen
card at the bottom, the pair in the center of the deck) on the
floor, put a hat over it... and just by some cleverly disguised
stamping of foot on floor (maybe a rain dance around the hat,or
a short bit of the Mexcian Hat Dance... when the hat was lifted the
deck would be separated quite a bit... like the spirits had moved
the cards above the chosen one...

Yes, it WOULD be really nice. I could say the same about many of my
favorite performers. The reality of this business is that the world
and popular tastes change rather quickly, often leaving many of the
great talents behind. Many of them also simply choose to withdraw
temporarily or permanently from a mass media existance which can and
often does devour the spark which ignited the media exposure to begin
with.

MAGIC! has about 600 members. It is somewhat difficult to tell their
individual logon frequency as the data I keep only shows the activity
log and the membership data with the last logon date. Often I will
think I haven't seen many names on the log, but when I look up the
membership data I will see that someone has logged on recently. The
activity around here creates several pages of log info daily.

Yes, charter members - those who made donations to MAGIC! prior to the

Re: SOVIET NEWS

MAGIC! is not a forum for world events or political affairs. Many
members, however, have developed close relationships with Soviet
magicians, and so, to the extent possible, I think that it is
reasonable that any information regarding the current
situation in the Soviet Union should be passed along. I would suggest,
that we act with discretion, however, since we do not know
what turns the situation in the Soviet Union will take.

I was able to pick up portions of the 5 a.m. (UCT/GMT) news direct from
Radio Moscow. The news was presented in a flat, dispassionate voice.
No international news or any other news items beyond those directly
related to the political situation were presented as a part of the
10-minute newscast. All statements were attributed to entities such as
"The Soviet Emergency Committee" or were quotes from specific
individuals. I do not recall Gorbichev's name being mentioned once
during the newscast.

The Soviet Emergency Committee was quoted as saying that they will take
"the strongest measures to lead the country and society out of the
crisis as soon as possible." They also said that they will take
"strong measures to prevent the country's slide into ... (lost word)."
And that they "want to prevent use of force against citizens."

It was indicated that "Moscow may be placed under curfew" and that the
troops have been sent into the city "to preserve order."

The position of the Russian leadership was referred to as "highly
dangerous" and there was some denouncement of Boris Yelsin and others
for taking the actions that they did.

The words "out of the crisis" were used several times during the
broadcast.

Re: WANTED TO BUY/SELL

I was speaking with a local (Los Angeles) magician today and he is
desperately looking for a card silk about 8-1/2" x 11". He says that
he can find larger ones and smaller ones but none in that approximate
size. His old one (I believe he said it was a 8 of Diamonds) is
totally tattered and he would appreciate any info on finding a
replacement. He has already called most of the major magic shops and
most of the other places one would be likely to find such a silk. I
told him, "the guys on MAGIC! will know where to find one." So --
help!

He also said that he had some illusions for sale:

o A sword-basket that uses a WINE BARREL and POOL CUES.

o A large sub-trunk complete with bag and straight jacket.
He emphasized that it was large enough for use by a big
      man.

   o A Zig-Zag of unknown origin.

If you are interested in any of the above, please leave me a private
message and I'll follow up.

And if you have any clues to the silk, let me know!

I have several packages that already have the B-Tree's implemented,
so I won't be writing them from scratch. The B-Tree is very quick on
retrieval, but can be slow on update. The problem is that most
commercial packages try to be everything to everyone, wheras what we
need is a program that is optimized for retrieval, rather than update

It was a fun filled time that I will remember. This is only the second

Problem is that I still don't know how you think after seeing your
lecture! (grin)
I think it would be premature to attempt to classify lectures by a
scheme that really doesn't exist yet. Besides, convention lectures
are a bit of a different animal in that the lecturer only has about
45 to 50 minutes and tends to: 1. Do their better stuff and 2. spend
less time explaining due to the large audience and shorter time frame
. If you like the idea, then why not lets try to flesh it out a bit
and arrive at a concensus on the classifications.
I will remember to contact Genii, I usually do, but didn't last year.

Without question there is a strong parallel between the enforced
focus imposed by the graduate studies system and the less structured
isolation of the world of magic. However, in the case of magic, I
am not sure whether it is the discipline or the people that produces
the lack of appreciation for the outside world and encourages the
often undesirable specialization. Is not this phenomenon being some-
what displayed when we push all discussions back to strictly being
magic?

Years ago, I had my magic library on a sort card system. You know,
the kind where you punched out holes in the edges of the cards (where

Re: VIDEO AGAIN

The details of booking magic shows may not touch on the experiences
of everyone on this board, but we do have a number of people who have
extensive experience in this area both in bookings for commercial
ventures and for magic conventions. I have long felt that many of
the complaints regarding convention magic shows might be resolved in
great part by more professionism in the actual booking process and
in enforcing adherence to the agreement by both parties. You are
correct in that acts sometime arrive at convention thinking they are
doing one thing only to find they are doing three things. Indeed,
acts (some of them being the so-called top professionals in the
field) show up at band call and only then tell you they need items
for their show. I recall the need for dry ice on a Sunday night show
once. One of the biggest problems that seems particular to magic
convention shows is the modification of acts to change effects or
more often, add effects because they are performing for magicians.
Indeed of the 12 minutes you contracted for you end getting 24
minutes. I have seen acts do a totally different act than the one
that was contracted. It seems that every year at the I.B.M. we have
at least one act that is almost impossible to work with and who is
a constant problem during the convention. Our performance agreement
seems to grow longer as we modify it to take into consideration the
new problems we encounter each year.

Re: ROTH REVIEW

Great! If you are interested maybe we can get a useful discussion
going on "Coins Across". I wasn't trying to make things more
difficult for you in suggesting that you narrow things down to the
routines or effects you were interested in. In fact, if you are just
interested in learning routines and effects for the pure joy of doing
so, thats fine! I had thought you had something in mind to fit into
your act or a particularly routine.
I think most who have done any coin magic have at least toyed with a
coins across type effect. For me, the basic problem with this type
of effect is that it is basically a series of the same effect. That
is to say, one needs to overcome the fact that after the first trans-
position, each successive one is anticlimatic. There are different
approaches to overcoming this basic obstacle in the effect and if you
are interested we (and others) can talk about them.

Re: ABBOTTS - REPRISE

Your activities chart for Abbott's was of considerable interest to me
and I did a quick overlay of the I.B.M. Baltimore convention on your
layout for comparison. Discounting SIG, spouse, and organizational
meetings, I came up with an average of 13.25 hours of activities per
day (including your 1 hour for lunch and 1.5 hours for dinner). For
quite some time we have followed an activity grouping approach to the
organization of activities. This means that similar activities are
grouped into the same timeframe each day of the convention. For
instance, lectures are from 11 am to 12 noon and 1 to 2 pm each day.
The Big Three Event (comedy club/close up/lecture) is 2:30 to 4 each
of the last three days. Evening shows are 8 to 10:30 pm. Late Three
Close Up Lectures are 12 midnight to 1 am each of the last three
nights. The core activity events with the greatest appeal are
scheduled into the mid day, mid afternoon, and evening hours. Events
of secondary interest are scheduled around these core hours. We have
experimented with fewer activities and more free time but this
resulted in complaints, particularly if one group had free time while
others were doing something. The point being that scheduling does
require quite a bit of thought and advance planning.

Re: DENIGRATING MAGIC'S IMAGE

Programming is working on a plan to allow MAGIC! to have various
sections that the members can select at their own option. It is about
two weeks away from being ready. Right now it is possible to have such
sections, but because MAGIC! is a private area the sections must be
activated/deactivated by the sysop.

The plan is to have sections for casual conversation as well as ones
for deep thought. An individual member will be able to select the ones
they want to read and respond to. There will also be some new read
commands that will allow faster access to messages addressed personally
to an individual and messages addressed to all.

When reading, the sections you have selected will be TRANSPARENT. In
other words, no need to read all the messages in one section and then
switch to another.

I'm hoping that this plan will take the heat off of the casual
conversations by allowing a member to either engage in them or to
decide to skip them.

I remember my final orals vividly. My chairman decided to resurrect an
ancient custom and to hold the exam in public. Afterwards, we had
coffee and little frog shaped chocolate cakes.

The deflation you mentioned is quite common - it is probably related to
post-partum depression. During the doctoral program the students
always used to say, "When this is over, I'm going to have the biggest
celebration in history." When it really _was_ over it was more like
"Ho hum, what do we do next?" (When I was a doctoral chairman I
actually had one student come to me after their exam to ask what their
next course was - I told them it was called LIFE).

The forty-seventh set of MAGIC! messages - #13000 (August 8, 1991)

I don't agree each sucessive coin moving across is necessarily
anti-climatic. The first one they were not expecting, but sucessive
ones they watch for. You can actually heighten the suspense by
announcing that each sucessive one is even more difficult, especially
the last one.
.
Tagaki has an excellent move using a 'spider' vanish (or as Roth
called it, 'a Bertram double feint') that really looks good. I saw a
new routine Johnnie Ace is working on using a really nice 1964
Kennedy expanded shell that Sterling is now making. It is done flat
on the table, and looks really magical.

Re: GAMBLING ROUTINES

I hate to disagree with skill level. Just spent the afternoon with
top undercover guy in Surveillance at major casino. He said the
guys with the magic SKILL can dumbfound the gamblers.... they don't
know a double lift from an Elmsley count. What he said is that
the gambler may have a crude move but does it when no one is either
looking or paying attention. The mage can do THE MAGIC MOVE while
being looked at.
.
He told me a magician watching him deal 2nds started to criticize
him (after) for grip and whatever... the gambler said, "So, F*ing
what... I took all the money home!"
.
He told me a magician used to be a pit boss at a casino. He would
get bored and do a card trick on occasion. He said he and his
partner would hate the guy, and the stuff.... but loved it when he
did tricks as they would stick a couple of hundred dollars worth
of chips in thier (secret device)while the guy was dong magic.

Re: RESEARCH

That's where Oracle comes in! You create your tables to hold your
data, and then create the indexes as needed to speed retrieval.
Obviously, the more indexes you have on a table the slower the
inserts and updates, but even on our larger tables (300,000 rows)
inserts and updates are fast even with 5 or 6 different indexes!
I think you're probably thinking from a perspective of PC products,
which seem to be written for the computer-illiterate to use. Get a
proper commercial DBMS and you'll be able to tailor the application
to your needs.

There are probably parts of California where Spanish Moss would grow.
Certainly, Southern California isn't one of them. We did have a
pineapple growing in the backyard for a while, but it died before it
produced fruit.

At one time, the fibre in Spanish Moss was used as the filler for
airplane seats. Apparently, it was durable and lightweight. I don't
know if anyone has tried Spanish Moss fibre as a form of invisible

There _will_ be MAGIC! after September 1st, barring some catastrophy so
large that MAGIC! won't be the major problem - like California falling
into the sea. Even in that case, there would probably be someone on
the other coast who could take it over. Which does bring up a good
thought - a copy of the membership roster should be in someone's hands
on the opposite shore. Of course, those of us who live here believe
that it is _the_ _rest_ _of_ _the_ _continent_ that will fall into the
sea, leaving us looking like New Zealand.

Re: ABBOTTS - DAY 3

Incredible that you still have your decoder ring! Maybe I will go find
mine and we can leave messages here for each other.

I probably would have been a radio kid, but my family got an early
television set - one of those 7" RCA's that you sometimes see in

believe the set cost something like $495 in early 1950's dollars.

I also remember how great it felt to have such a grasp on the field

ever knowing it.

Jeff's silent act was an excellent manipulation act and Jeff had an

Re: ROTH REVIEW

I didn't say that each successive coin moving across is necessarily
anti-climatic. I said that is the basic problem with the effect that
the performer needs to address. Yes! Heightening the suspense by
making each successive coin more difficult is a potential solution.
A complete reversal in the direction of movement is another. Use of
a back pinch to cause a visable appearance of a coin into the hand is
another. I wasn't just trying to point out the basic weakness of the
effect Cindy mentioned and to get discussion started on potential
solutions....your response is hopefully but the first of thousands!
I recall that John Kennedy had an excellent "flat on the table" coins
across with a shell. John Carney also had a flat version in his very
earliest lecture. Is not the "spider vanish" a Marlo vanish?

Yes, unlike some more primitive systems, you will be able to either
read or download all messages in the sections you are enrolled in with
one operation. When reading, replying or appending, sections are
transparent on MAGIC! You will see something new in the header though,
that will let you know which section the message is in. You will only
have to specify a section when you are entering a new message. We are
working on the programming for MAGIC! and the programming for IMP! so
that things will proceed seamlessly.

The current plan for new subscribers after September 1st is to offer
the money back guarantee.

We do have such a plan (hub boards) with MAGIC-NL and are working on
setting up some others in various other countries. Within the U.S.
there are a lot of ways to keep the phone costs down (IMP!, PC-PURSUIT,
etc. along with some others we are working on) so that a call across
the country is really often the same price or less than a call between,
say, New York and Baltimore. It is actually often cheaper for me to
call across country than it is to call within California. But, as the
network grows, there is the possibility of "distributed MAGIC!."

Ours was actually a round picture tube that had been "rectangled" by
the design of the box. Shortly after we got ours (probably about a

was probably about 17" diagonal and that was lifted into position by
raising the top of the unit.

Chelman had an excellent point in his lecture -- that the second coin,
not the last one, should be the cleanest, because that's when the
heat's on. When they see that they can't catch that one (because
that's the one you stole to begin with) they give up and you can do the
last one with a simple steal. Chelman's routine -- with four DIFFERENT
coins, which can be done impromptu, is pretty interesting.

on that old goody, coins across. It's been the subject of some recent

A similar discussion on the MacDonald Aces a few months ago, before I

in lumpenland.

P.S. Hope you had your zombie ball with you, it makes a good follow
up to your packet tricks.

Re: ROTH REVIEW

I think the name 'spider vanish' is credited to Marlo. Roth attribute
s it to Bertram. When I first read about the vanish I could not
visualize how it would fool any one. Now that I have seen Tagaki and
Roth use it, I can see how powerful it is.
.
It is particuliarly deceptive if you do a fumbling type transfer so
that the observer thinks you REALLY didn't take the coin in the other
hand. When you show it 'empty' using the spider move, they are convin
ced they were right and it is in the other hand. When you show that
hand empty they have no where to go, since they have already accepted
the first hand as empty and when you show the second empty - it kills

Right - the first one is a complete surprise, the second and third

they know what's going to happen and have given up trying to figure

Re: PUNCH CARDS

Great! There are only two cards, but I'd like to have a couple of
copies. They are part of an interesting little effect and since I only
have the one set and card duplicators are getting rare, I'm afraid that
if they get torn or something I'll never be able to perform it again.
Let me check one more local resource. If that fails, I might need to
send 'em to you.

I spoke with Carol Roy yesterday. She had an MRI done and it turns out
that she had cracked a bone in her leg when she fell just prior to the

leg. Seems to be on the mend now, although it is slow going.

Picked up a new accordian joke for you in Music City:
What's the difference between a snake and an accordian player laying
dead in the middle of 16th Avenue (main Music Row studio street)?

Ans: The snake was probably on his way to a gig.
Ans2: There were skid marks in front of the snake.
