Not exactly coins across, but I have a coins (4) thru table you do
standing with a hook coin, you hang coin on pants leg. The idea
came from a guy in England that used to have a portable shelf on
his leg to do the Slydini type stuff standing. But mine took no
pre set up. I think I put it into Tarbell 7 (I havn't done it for
awhile and can't remember all the moves).

Re: COINS ACROSS

I'm answering this on your "Coins Across" thread, but commenting
on Christian Chelman and his recent lecture. I saw him last night
at our Midnight Lecture here in Las Vegas and he said the same
thing.(RE: second coin of matrix) It wasn't so much the second
coin being the most impossible, but the heightened spectator
awareness after being surprised by the first movement makes them
watch even closer to the next one. The important point was there
was still a progressive level of "impossibility", but the idea of
heat being on the second coin seemed more a technical comment.
I'm sure he didn't mean to say you should relax after the second
coin travels. The spectator is still aware of increasing
impossibility, but the early steal of the second coin shifted the
"moment" to relative safety. The steal being accomplished on the
off count of the first revelation puts the performer far enough
ahead to be able to concentrate on presentation, knowing the hard
stuff is behind him.

I liked his use of four different coins, but it looked like magic
for mgcians, as I wonder how many spectators, not knowing the
"standard" handling would appreciate the difference. I thought
his idea of "Animals escaping from a zoo"(each coin picturing a
different one) was a bit of a stretch, trying to justify an
otherwise (to some) uninteresting routine. I know I'll get some
flack for that last line, but personally, I haven't seen much
point in "Matrix" from a pure magic standpoint, seeing it mostly
as a puzzle, "Bubble gum for the eyes", as Ammar puts it.

For those so interested, Christian had some great solutions to a
technically difficult puzzle such as using different coins, and I
thought his impromptu solution for borrowed coins was ingenious.

T A, I'm sure you remember Chelmans comment on "most magicians
(or laymen) trying to reconstruct his routine forget the
(important!) detail that there were only three different coins
and one matching coin "posing" as a different coin, thus becoming
it's own gimmick! (I'm trying to talk around the real solution,
as people really have to experience his performance first hand to
appreciate Chelman's "Impromptu-ness".

In talking to him later, he showed me one of his bags, (a zipper
pouch, men's purse size, if you will) that contained a complete
mentalist act with all "impromptu" items. To be fully load for a
show and still appear casual and otherwise unprepared is quite a
feat!

I was greatly impressed by his professionalism, and his ability
to tailor his show and to price to accomodate the performing
situation. He stands firm on his first price quoted knowing it is
indeed fair and reasonable, and is truly the best show for the
money. I wonder how many of us have as many as five separate
shows for different situations, fully rehearsed, ready to go.

For the rest of his lecture, I was relatively indifferent, as
most of it was standard fare, (although quite good) but I think I
learned more about the "Business" of magic after the lecture than
all my other lectures combined. Except for Mike Ammar, of course,
although I doubt he and Christian compete in the same market.

There's more, but I just wanted to kick off this Coin thread, so
I'll hold my comments about his other routines for a later date.

David (the other one)

Does he get rid of the palm tip? Or does it just work like a flap and

Aside - I've often thought of running a subcutaneous (under the skin)
tube up the hand and into a finger tip. With butane, you could do an
incredible cigarette light from finger bit. (NOTE: Lest anyone try
this, consult your surgeon - do NOT try to install it on your own!).

tonk venue, a pretty classy joint and Boots really likes Kevin and
uses him whenever he's in town. I talked to him today and he has made

Re: ROTH REVIEW

I agree with you about "Coins Across" being a series of the same
effect. I find the weak point in many close-up artists' renditions is
that they do the same steal each time! Even David Roth did the same
steal twice in a row. I decided to try a bottom steal for the first
coin across, a retention vanish for the second, a shuttle pass for the
third. That way, I don't feel like a spectator will be able to track my
next move from remembering my last. I've always loved the effect.

As usual, no Genii in Charlotte Hall as of yet but glad the ad looks
good. We've added Michael Close and Timothy Wenk since the August ad
deadline too. There is much to do in Music City besides magic and wil
think on it. Besides the usual "lunch with" a celeb (plenty of those
around) do you have any suggestions to alternate significant other
plans. I'm game and Gloria could help out here. I stopped by the
Holiday Inn while there and it will be a great venue. I'm starting to
get excited myself. Glad to hear Johnny Ace is looking 4ward to his
visit. The Nashville magicians should start buzzing when the Genii hi
ts Music City. Thanks.

In a sense Chelman's routine IS magic for magicians -- but not
entirely; audiences do follow the one-ahead concept, and often realize
that the ball or coin that appears is not the same one that vanished.
It is sometimes worth going to a bit of extra trouble to really make an
effect insoluble. To quote my favorite line of Annemann's: "Audiences
are far from being as dumb as some performers seem to think."

I have several storage systems.... argh.... smalls go into a
trio of standing small metal cabinets. About 3 feet tall, one foot
wide, one foot deep, with about 10 drawers, roughly 3-in. deep.
Then I have a 12 foot wide, 7 foot high, antique British dept.
store sweater cabinet... has 36 glass fronted wooden sliding
drawers, each about a foot wide, six inches deep and 24-inches
front to rear. The lower 3-feet is shelving with sliding front
wooden drawers. Then in the garage you will find about 30 cardboard
file boxes stacked on shelves. Only trouble is I don't know what
is in any of them at this time. Argh is putting it mildly.

Pete, the book does have the frontpiece and the original pictorial
cloth binding. It doesn't state what edition it is, but preceding the
page that states it was entered according to Act of Congress there is
a date of 1870 so it may be a later edition. The book is completely in
tact with the exception of some pencil writing on the inside front and
rear cover that has been erased. I spoke with J. P. Jackson, a
collector I know in San Diego, and he gave around the same price range
but stated that a expert would have to view the book. As luck would

I am looking for a book called - "Magicians Nightly- The Magic of
Eddie Fechter" by Jerry Mentzer. There is a really interesting card
trick contained within it.. The card trick involves having the
spectator hold a card (black) and the magician adds another black card
to it. Then the magicians switches one of the cards in the spectators
hands with a red card. All this is done while the spectator holds the
cards. The climax is when the spectator turns the cards over to reveil
that both cards are red.. I am recalling this trick from memory... So
it is not to xact.. If anyone nows this trick please contact me..

can use a local call to Telenet to connect to MAGIC! It works fine in

of September. Is this close to the Hotel DeCarlo?
Is there a Marriott near by...or strategically located between Richmond
and yourself?
.
As I mentioned previously, we have a trade show going
in Washington October 17 thru 20th. Currently have reservations at the
JW Marriott but I've been told it's
in a dangerous area, near the White House. I'm not familiar with the
area but I understand Marriott has another Hotel
called the Washington Marriott. Do you have a recommendation?

I put a contract on the civil war place in Lebanon, TN tonight and
if all goes well we'll be moving the Krayborg to there. Nuevo DeCarlo
on 37 acres and tall columns with ivy. Closer to LA too and can run
MCCMS right from the 2nd story veranda.

Thats good news. Sounds like Richmond will have to do. There's no
Marriott nearby but Richmond is 90 minutes away and if you keep me
posted and I'm in town I'll jump in the truck and come down and
have supper with you. We've just put a contract on a house in
Nashville and if all goes well we'll be moving lock, stock and
DeCarlo to a civil war era spread just east of Music City - The Nuevo
DeCarlo. Keep me posted on Richmond and we'll get together. Looking

Krayborg will survive and with a bigger country at my command maybe I
can do more stuff. It's got a pond, woods, large barn, cool old
ag building for Conj Woodworks. No traffic noises down a gravel
road with Charlie Daniels living down at the other end. Just right for
a long haired country boy. A large office upstairs with book shelves to
the 12 foot ceiling. Much more like home. Hope you'll visit.

I'm sure Teller would make the same decision to be mute today -- he's
a bit on the wierd side (they're BOTH on the wierd side). About
12 years ago when they were performing in their Asparagus Valley
Cultural Society in San Francisco (ran for 3 years -- standing room
only every show) between acts Penn, Teller and Wier used to come out
into the lobby to talk to people -- only Teller would just have that
bizarre grin of his on his face and nod at people! No-one could

Re: P & T ON LETTERMAN

I think Teller's silence works very well for him; he's the element that
makes the team unique -- the part Penn plays could be done by dozens of
performers. There's an unstated malevolence about his presence that
focuses attention primarily on him, whatever Penn may be saying.
And he isn't the "butt" of Penn's jokes; as in the rat thing last
night, he seems to be ENJOYING what's going on -- which, of course,
only makes people more uneasy about him.
I dunno how long P&T will last as a team, but I will make this
prediction; when they split (assuming that eventually happens), Teller
will end up with the strongr career.

Not necessarily. If Rats are properly trained, in the mode that
Roy, of Siegfried and Roy employ, ie: they sleep with Teller a few

Re: NEW COIN IDEA

With all the discussions here on coins across I was fiddling with
some ideas while sitting here at the computer... there happened
to be a stack of about 10 quarters on my desk.
.
Then... at the finish of doing some silly moves, I stacked five
quarters up and was thinking about the old Cap and Pence (Tabman
had reminded me of the title with an old instruction sheet he
faxed to me)... and I HIT A NON GAFFED MODUS to do the trick
where the stack of coins goes thru the spectator's hand!!!!
.
It doesn't have ALL THE bit of the original, IE "no odd coin, or
dice shows up..." but hey... this is IMPROMPTU... "A LifeSaver,
as one might say..."
.
Here is the set up. You can use any number of quarters, but 5 or
6 makes a better stack and display. You need 10 or 12... half are
known and seen by spectators.
.
What I did was this. I did a four coin routine with quarters, a
variant on flying Eagles... it doesn't matter.
You then say, "I need ONE MORE COIN" go into right pocket and
finger palm FIVE COINS and bring ONE in view and add to the four
already on table. You can either have a pre-rolled dollar bill in
shape of tube that will fit over the stack of quarters or try a
sleight I just came up with to cop the coins... it doesn't
matter, you well have to develope the flow with trial...
.
Anyway, you borrow spectator's hand doing the standard COIN STACK
SWITCH... Don't make a move of this. All you do is put the five
visible coins into the flat palm of your own left hand and in a
squaring up action with right fingers you leave the five coins
in the left hand as it turns palm down and your right fingers
come up with the palmed five coins (this is the standard switch
for the cap and pence) and place the five new coins onto the back
of the spectator's outstretched hand. Your left hand holds their
hand steady (the coins finger palmed in left hand are hidden by
the spec's hand) -- again nothing new here.
.
Two ways to finish. With the bill tube you cover the coins on
back of spectator's hand and as in the old trick you count 1,2,3,
and lift the tube (taking the coins with it) and let the coins
drop from under hand onto table.
.
HERE IS THE CLEVER BIT... THE CLEAN FINISH. AS THE COINS DROP
ONTO THE TABLE -- YOU NEED TO PRACTICE THE TIMING HERE -- YOU LET
THE COINS IN THE TUBE FALL INTO YOUR LAP.... THE SOUND OF COINS
HITTING TABLE COVER SOUND OF THE COINS HITTING YOUR LAP!!!!!!!!!
.
Needless to say, you need to, after you lift the tube, come to
the rest position near rear of table so the coins can be dropped
without any noticeable movement of right hand.
.
NON TUBE METHOD. This is hard to describe. But try on your own
hand. Stack 5 quarters on back of your left hand. BEVEL THEM OH
SO SLIGHTLY AWAY FROM YOU. Now, your right hand, from above, held
out flat comes down, the big knuckle area of your right
forefinger touches the stack, pushing down will cause the rear
lower part of the stack to lift off your left hand slightly. You
can move your right thumb forward and NIP the coins. YOu can
lift them off secretly (remember the timing a fraction later the
coins under hand fall to table) and then lap when noise cover
hits. Remember... this is not supposed to be better than the
original... BUT IS AN IMPROMPTU WAY TO DO ONE MORE NICE TRICK.

e
all
the life and times
Sitting here catching my breathe Sat morn trying to keep my head
while the office is crawling with rockers reading fan mail, etc.
Sometimes these girls send them some pretty exotic photos but I
only let myself look just once just to make sure they wern't
lying about that stuff.
.
Here's a couple of lines for you from one of the bone boys' new
tunes; "the spotlights dry the tears upon my face; the road is
always calling out my name." If you don't get it you ain't been
there and if you have you know what they mean. You just can't
explain it since it describes the life of the itinerant
entertainer who tours at any level at all.
.
I played fun poker with Red Lane (Blackjack County Chains, writer
of Willie's first big record), Tom B (top bass man), and two of
their bearded cohorts from the hills (all these guys are 50+
years and boss). After an hour guy says, "Crabb, lets see some of
those card moves I've been hearing about." Well, I'd already
been dealing off the bottom and top and my friend Red had been
winning hands so I waited til it was my deal again and then did
the great poker demo that killer magic teacher, Pete Biro, spent
several hours drilling me on. The sucker punch knocked em out and
we had a great laugh and somebody ordered a double round. Then
Don White from Tulsa started doing one handed cuts. I asked him
if he knew what that was called. He said, "A one handed cut?" and
I told him about Charlier and the French Cut then dealt the same
hands again this time giving Red the spade royal for another good
laugh. All in all a fun morning (midnight to 4am) with some guys
I admire. Thanks again, Pete.
.
There's not that much to it I guess. I have to forget about it
all and be the rock and roll woodman for the next week. You guys
help me keep my feet on the ground or maybe it's the other way
around. Who knows. Not me for sure? Goodbye or later.

Re: P & T ON LETTERMAN

The rat bit is a rather bizarre way to find a card. Why didn't they
spend an extra buck and get a fuzzy rat, the rubber rat looked goofy.
.
Regarding Teller talking. In their last two shows I have seen at the
Wiltern, Teller has had a speaking part. He is the voice of Mojo the
magic gorilla. In the first show he emerges from behind the Mojo
prop apparently smoking a cig, he actually has a mike. It takes a
while to realize that he is the one doing the talking. In the second
show he has on a wig and glasses and was apparently a member of the
audience. Penn has the first person pick a card and pass it to the
next person, and then next, etc. Teller is the third person on the
left. By the time the card gets to about the fifth person, Mojo
'knows' the card. It took me about 3 cards to figure out that Teller
was the third guy. He then proceeds to have the glasses and wig fall
off, thereby 'exposing' the gag to the entire audience. It's really
a funny bit.
.
After the show both Penn & Teller are out in the lobby hawking shirts
and posters and signing things. Teller talks to everyone, answers
questions, and 'seems' rather normal to me, but what does that mean ?
.
I have opten wondered if Penn was born a jerk, or does he just work
real hard at being one ?

I would revise that statement to, 'Audiences are not as dumb as MOST
performers think'. If magicians would take as there major premise
that the audience is as least as smart (if not more so) than they are
and try to build routines that play to this type of audience, then
magic would be better served. The 'dummies' in the audience will
still be deceived and think it is great, but the major advantage is
the 'smart' audience will think its great as well.

I had that old cap and pence around for a while. The English pennies
are almost worn out. It is a pinned set sorta crudely made. The litte
copper cap is beautifully done. The tiny, handcarved ivory die is
totally non parallel. I don't know the maker or the year but apppears
to be from early 20th century but could be older. Those coins are
early. Is there any way to make a "cap" from a dollar bill that has
a top and is folded to resemble an upside down coin box of the Okito
type? I always liked wrapping a bill into a shape around my thumb. I
think I read it in the Professor's column in Genii or maybe Magicana
or it might hae been the Reel Works for all I can remember, but I
think it was the Professor. He gets all the credit anyway.

No, with the poker deal the hardest part is getting the mental part
together so you remember to do all that stuff real natural like
that's how you did it the whole time. I had alread done the cut a cou
ple of times that night just to see if I could do it in a friendly
game. Nobody even cared. The game did loosen up a little after that
and we started playing some crazy games with dealre calling most
wierd. Guys started doing off the wall cuts and stuff like that.
Pretty funny. Rolling up a playing card and putting a rubber band
around it would work good for cap and pence too.

(Note: This message was supposed to be sent a few days ago when I
hit Vegas... but the batteries were down and on the way out!)
.
Crazy scene... I am on airplane heading to Vegas and the two
guys in row in front of me (total strangers... one an older black
dude the other a DUDE dude... duh, as Leno would say...) anyway
they are across aisle from each other and when they got on they
were both carrying guitar cases. Talk started, then axes came
out.
Old guy had OLD guitar (Gibson) young guy, "I have the
latest Yamaha... etc etc..." Soon as No Smokin' sign went out the
young dude was first to show off his instrument... HAH... 2
minutes later the black dude had his out and was blowin away...
new guy was fried, smoked and near death... NOT even in same
earth league... funny... The new dude plugged some kind of small
box into the black guys Gibson, then put headset on. Black guy
kept rockin' and rollin' and the new guy looked like he had not
heard nuthin this good before.... EVER!!!... ho ho ho ho....
Kinda like a pair of magi, one guy with a packet trick
repertoire and the old guy being Vernon in his prime!
NO... NO... another guy was digging the scene and he grabbed
his case... WHEW... he only took out a book...
Now the CAT is trying to teach the dude what is hapnin' (got
to also send this massage to Tabman...)
I can see the scene in a Mel Brooks movie... Suddenly the Pilot
comes out with his accordion!!!! The stews all break into song...
the male stew goes into a dance routine... The three Black chicks
in one row hit us with the DOO WAHs....
Cleverly, I have tied up the Film Rights for this while we
are waiting for the baggage.
Heh, the white guy is now repeating... "That's COOL"... REAL
LIVE REVIEW HERE ON MAGIC!!!!! Now where did I put my deck of
cards.... Oooops the black guy has stood and turned around and in
black and gold letters has his name on the Gibson... "PINEY
CLARK", OK, in the movie he has a wooden leg...
Just finished talking to Piney... he also deals the greatest
deuce I've seen... he's a Blackjack dealer at the Trop and told
me to play his shift and we will split the moolah later!!

Re: STAGE FOG

Thanks for the suggestion. I have the book. i am aware even of using
ammonia and hydrochloric acid(muratic) which is somewhat dangerous.
i am lucky in that my son is a research chemist. The water soluble fog
fluid has me stuck. I talked to Theatre Effects in Baltimore but
gained little on this subject. My interest is in that magicians use
chemicals but quite often little knowledge of danger or possible side
effects. When I gather enough information perhaps I should write it up
for magicians. For instance, the information on making flash cotton,
string, cord, etc is available but I would not even try it as it is
cheaper to buy. (For instance I know of a case where a college student
added nitric acid to an after shave. Nitric acid turns the protein =c-n
in skin yellow. Left his room and returned later to find the bomb
squad and fire department at the dorm. The after shave had blown up as
he had created nitroglycerin.....Last fall, Purdue University chemistry
department had a a good size explosion. One of the demonstration crew
was making gun cotton and left in an oven over the weekend to dry. the
explosion blew a door off and caused gas leaks....My background
includes a number of teaching chemistry and being in charge of removing
unwanted and dangerous chemicals from the 2 nd largest school district
in Illinois....
Thanks for the interest.

Re: CLASSIC RENDITIONS

I just watched Volume 3 of Michael Ammar's new Classic Renditions
series - The Invisible Bill Switch Plus John Cornelius' Borrowed Bill
Routine. This is 41-minutes of terrific video! The tape is VERY high
quality all the way through; with VHS Hi-Fi sound. The folding
sequence is the Mike Kozlowski one, but the beautiful construction of
the finesse and performing philosophy is pure Ammar.

Michael has brought something new to learning magic in this series -
the use of Super Learning and Neuro Muscular Programming - and it
WORKS. Super Learning is a concept developed in Eastern Europe and
uses special settings and even special music - Baroque - to speed
learning and to increase retention. Neuro Muscular Programming is a
technique borrowed from the sports field. I do not believe that these
techniques have been applied to learning magic before and the results
is VERY POWERFUL.

This tape, along with others in the series, is available from Michael
Ammar, 5107 Evergreen Court, Austin, TX 78731. And of course, Michael
is available right here on MAGIC! if you have any questions.

P.S. - Check the tape for some great pictures of one of Michael's
Tabman Tables!

Re: STAGE FOG

The acid was probably sulfuric(battery acid). The rule is A to W, acid
to water. Hydrochloric acid wouldn't show the same results. The book
"How to Make Flashes, Bangs, and puffs of Smoke" via Micky Hades
mentions sodium and potassium being added to water. Those results are
really dangerous. i suspect that some items are added to books without
trying them out. I few years ago I read in a book about putting your
hand in molten Lead.( I can't find the book) This is really dangerous
unless the lead is way above its melting point and your hand is very
wet. i have seen it live once by Jearl Walker and again on his video
tape where he even walks on hot coals. Jearl writes for scientific
American is a Physics educator. ( also much braver than I)

What if you had two plates of glass and fired through the first
breaking the second? I like the idea of the impervious transluscence.
Fire through the glass plate and then turn it to show it unbroken.
One of my fascinations with bullet catching has to do with having
a dinner plate broken just before the bullet it caught. I would
hold the plate between my hands stretched out in front of my face.
Would be wearing WWI flight goggles and a leather flight helmet.
Gun would be a percussion cap ala Hoffmann shooting a 50 cal ball.
First I would have the shooter (someone I pay really well, hah)
fire at a plate held in one hand and have it shatter. Then the bullet
catch with the plate shattering in front of my face and falling to th
ground with a blood cap in my mouth. Bang. Have you thought of catchi
ng arrows? Har, I know you have.

Re: DOVE THRU GLASS

OK, this is a true story. Honest. I wuz assisting Arthur Bull,
"FRANCISCO" and doing the bullet thru the assistant. The set up
was this: Picture a card table with no top surface, four legs and
side panels about 6-inches deep. Side was hinged so you could enter
and stand within the framework.
Front and rear had frames holding sheets of glass. A few feet back
was a frame with a target.
OK, Biro gets inside framework, glass in front, glass behind. All
the usual craparama... goggles, etc.
Arthur goes into audience, gets a bullet marked, loads gun...
lines up to shoot bullet thru glass, Biro, glass and into target.
Bang! Bullet fired, leaves gun.... hits and shatters the front
glass.... (pause) about three full seconds... and rear glass
breaks... You see the coat I was wearing got caught in the gaffus
that makes the hammers swing over and break the pieces of glass.
Both are supposed to break simultaneously, right... I mean what is
faster than a speeding bullet?
.
The killer to the bit was as this happened, I look into front row
of audience and Carl Ballantine has laffed so hard he has fallen
out of his seat and is rolling on the floor. This now breaks me up
to point I nearly bit off my lower lip to keep from laughing....
.

Re: MAGIC WHITE OUT

I've been spending some time each evening reading and being
inspired by _Keep The Wheels Turning_, the Carl Owen Book which I
finally got up the cash to buy. Most of the Thayer and Owen
illusion plans drawn by Carl Owen are included in this book,
which because of my interests is one of the best book buys ever.
A bargain at $120. As I've been reading and looking at the shop
drawings something started giving me that deja vu feeling. In
addition to my computer I keep several books on my desk; Instant
Information, Thayer Quality Magic #3,5,6,8, the 1939 P&L catalog,
20th Century Magic, The Expert at the Card Table, Illustrated
Magic, Modern Magic, More Magic, DOS 3.3, Practical
Blacksmithing, Plato's Republic, and BYRON WELS, _The Great
Illusions of Magic_.
.
Well this deja vu thing started getting me and I reached for the
Wels' Illusion Book and started comparing the shop drawings in
the book. Seeesh, Wl took all the Thayer/Owen work and used
about a bath tub full of white out to take all the Thayer
references from each set of plans and published them, shooting
the plates from the original Thayer stuff I'd bet. In his
introduction he talks about all the painstaking work he did
assembling the plans and how they were just crude shop drawings
before he got hold of them, etc, etc, etc.
.
Now I don't know Byron Wells so I can't say, and maybe he did
rescue some lost set of work. Maybe Carl Owen and Floyd Thayer
copied the poor slob that drew the stuff in the Wels book. Nah, I
don't think so.
.
I don't want Byron Wels' book around here anymore. I wonder if
Tannen's will give me my money back.
.
.

Re: ENIGMA

In "Enigma", the performer can borrow a drinking glass and a dollar
bill. The crumpled bill is placed on the glass and the dollar bill
visably penetrates up through the glass. You can have a spectator place
their hand palm up while the glass is placed mouth-down. With another
slight slap the bill penetrates down through the glass into the
spectator's hand. This also can be performed with a corked bottle or a
sealed jar. This bit of information was taken from Genii.

Actually it is the idea of PROGRAMMING your "muscles," (really, the
PSYCHO-MOTOR part of your brain) to do the same thing over and over
again. In these tapes, Michael has teamed it with another strong
technique - "Super Learning" - to help you get the moves down CORRECTLY
in the least amount of time. It is a brilliant concept applied to
magic training.

Re: MARTIN NASH

Attended Martin Nash's lecture at the Castle today. Very good! He
started out by talking about the importance of PERFORMANCE over TRICKS
and what he had to say dovetailed with the conversations on here so
well that for a few seconds I thought he was doing a reading of MAGIC!
messages.

He demo'ed some of his great card work and then walked us through most
of the major stuff. It's kinda funny, sometimes when you see the
"works" you feel a bit letdown - but not with his stuff! His routines
are really beautiful and pretty staggering in concept and design. He
makes it a point of starting with a clean, unprepared deck, right out
of the package, but, as he pointed out, since a brand new deck is
always in sequence, it _IS_ stocked -- by the factory! He says that he
doesn't use any really fancy sleights (except for his excellent
seconds, which he uses only in a portion of his acts and which he did
not get into in this lecture). He says that while magicians enjoy
watching sleights, the day-to-day performance in front of laypersons
requires simpler moves. Uh, huh, yeah, some of what he does is indeed
mechanically "simple," but it ain't so simple!

He did complain about the loss of quality in Bicycle decks and he said
that he had bought up a supply of Racer Back decks. He said that
U.S.P.C. doesn't appreciate the size of the magician market - that he
goes through about 750 to 1,000 decks in the average year and that he
estimated the use by magicians at about TEN MILLION decks per year. I
told him about the MAGIC! conversations with U.S.P.C. and he and others
suggested that the info _be_ _published_ _in_ _GENII_ and that magi be
strongly encouraged to write to U.S.P.C.'s marketing department
suggesting that they produce a MAGICIAN'S QUALITY BICYCLE DECK (for
those of you who have recently joined MAGIC!, we investigated the
quality of Bicycle cards and had several long discussions with the
manager of quality control. He said that he would be willing to
produce CASINO QUALITY decks if marketing would agree).

Martin had a new way to raise the price of lecture notes - he sold
THREE different routines of his at $10 each or all three for $25.
Looks like lecture notes are going to go sky high in the future as
gimmicks like this become more popular. On the other hand, each of his
routines could provide a CAREER for a working mage and they were
carefully put together by Stephen Minch, so if you are going to use
them, they are far more than worth the cost. And he encouraged their
use VERBATIM - patter and all! He said he'd spent 30-years honing
them, why shouldn't someone get the benifit of that?

A very worthwhile afternoon!

Re: ENIGMA

Wayne,
Enigma is the brainchild of Nicholas Night of Long Beach, Ca., a
nice young man who looks a lot like James Brandon.

For those of us that haven't seen it yet, the presentation is:
You simply borrow a glass and a dollar bill. The crumpled bill is
placed under the glass and WHACK! the bill penetrates up through
the bottom of the glass! Have a spectator place their hand palm
up while the glass is placed mouth down. With another light slap,
the bill visibly penetrates down through the glass into the
spectator's hand. There are several variations, but you get the
idea. Max Maven gave it a good review a few months back in Genii.

This comes with a 14 page booklet explaining the use of the
gimmick (how else?) and several ideas and routines. Although the
$20.00 price seems a bit steep for something that can be put in
the same class as the thumb tip, dye tube, etc., the price is
fair. I'm in the process of modifying mine and it cost me over
$16.00 just for the necessary pieces.

With a little practice to make the moves "natural", again similar
to wearing a thumbtip without worry, you have a nice standup
routine suitable for table performers. For what it's worth, I
recommend it, but who am I to say what works for you? Try it out.

By the way, welcome aBOARD. Allow me to introduce myself. I don't
talk much, but I usually read everything daily, so if you need
anything, give me a call.

Re: DOVE THRU GLASS

Sounds like it should work. Leave yourself plenty of room for the
arrow (six inches diameter wouldn't be unreasonable) as it takes
a LOT of practice to hit consistently at even a moderate distance
even with some pretty elaborate gear. I've shot in an archery
league for several years and still get caught off guard when what
should be a good shot veers off the mark. Trying it without the
ribbon to assure better accuracy and using Tabby's suggestion of
two plates sounds like a workable solution.

Oh yeah, I've seen someone that catches arrows. He uses Flu-Flu
arrows and a pretty weak bow so the arrow is moving quite slow by
the time it reaches him. It's still impressive though. I think he
was on "That's Incredible" a few years back.

Let me know how it turns out.

Re: COINS ACROSS

Actually, my use of "troglodytes" was a reference to a particular
politician whom you may recall - Spiro Agnew. He popularized the term
while the administration was attempting to show that he was a "genius"
(they also revealed that his I.Q. was something like 138, which is
actually barely into the "genius" classification). Actually, since I
wasn't quite sure what T A's comment really meant, I threw troglodytes
in to give him some fodder - fodder that he apparently rejected.

In truth, I have had a reasonable amount of experience with politicians
and many, likely even most, are hard working, honest, etc. Also, in
most cases, their staffs do an excellent job of background research.
If you doubt it, appear before a Congressional Committee sometime to
testify on behalf of (or against) some legislation. You will find that
the Committee members will generally ask tough, penentrating questions.
We do, however, also elect some amazing creatures and, unfortunately,
a fair number do lose touch with their constituencies and, after a
while, begin to assume that the voters are too dumb to make the right
choices. Frankly, there was a time in my political activity when I
made that same misjudgement, but that particular story doesn't belong
here.

Yes, Martin Nash still does the Jacks or Better routine. As a matter
of fact, it was one of the routines for which notes were available.

And yes, he does speak from experience. I'm going to be paraphrasing,
but basically he said - the cards have been good to me, I've earned a
rather nice living with them for over 30 years. And I've seen him open
a fresh deck for each show - although there are some interesting things
that can be done that way! But he can also do the same things with
someone else's deck.

Fire walking is based on the principal you may have seen where your
mother tested the iron to see if it was hot by wetting her finger and
touching the hot iron. I have not tried the fire walking but according
to Jearl Walker you need to be scared enough to have your feet
sweaty(wet), avoid touching the hot coals twice with the same part of
the foot, having the coals covered with a grey ash, and don't curl your
toes so you trap hot coals with them. he has a video out where he
explains and shows. It is because the vaporbarrier will temporaily
slow the heat transfer....This is the same as with putting your hand in
a contianer of molted lead. In this case the lead must b e so hot
that the lead does not turn toa solid around your finger and cook it.

determine if dice are loaded by dropping them into a glass of water to
a mind reading by Finn Jon where i would not explain how he does it.
Finn Jon's is basically handing out an envelope with many dollar bills
in it. Having a spectator remove some and putting them into another
envlope without counting.
the first envelope is returned. he then tells the group how many bills
were removed. They count and he is correct. It is not based on serial
