You are right - I haven't seen it (The Eyes Have It). I have a Joe
Steven's thing that is a sort of large 3-Card Monte with a sliding back
that eventually becomes a singly large card, but, in truth, I've never
used it. Every once in a while I think about it though.

Re: ORGANIZATION

Funny - you probably think I am kidding too! What I described to you
is actually how I do SPEECHES. I take every overhead transparency I've
ever done and sort 'em into two piles, exactly like the trick bit I
described. The overheads are eventually sorted into a speech and, in
effect, they also become my lecture notes. If I drop the pile on the
way in, I'm dead. I'm doing one in Oxnard on Sept. 12th for a special
combined meeting of the Data Processing Managers Association and the
Association for Computing Machines (ACM) if you want to see how it
works.

You got any idea what message #16484 was all about? You addressed it
to someone named "ER" who isn't a member of the system, it is on a
thread named "Not that it is relevant," and it consists of what looks
like about 1/2 of a one liner. Other than that, it is OK.

Re: SALE!

HOT LIST... HOT LIST...
Am about to put some stuff on the sell block and wanted to give
first shot here on MAGIC! I have not had time to look for the
prices, but want to put the list up here before I ship the lot to
a magic shop friend who will take the stuff off my hands.
.
ANY INTEREST LET ME KNOW ASAP AS I DON'T WANT TO KEEP THE STUFF
CLUTTERING UP THE DINING ROOM TABLE.
.
Thayer double-locking Jap Box. I don't know how to unlock one
side, but I am sure someone knows and can help here. Beautiful
woodwork.
Large Owen Supreme brass rice bowls. Self contained load of
water, no disks, no flaps.
Merv Taylor made "stamped logo" very rare, HASKELL MONEY MAKING
MACHINE.
"Demon" (Davenport) Omelet Pan for cake or omelette in hat. Now
that people wear hats again a modern trick!
Paul Fox Rising cards, with houlette, gaff and instructions.
Merv Taylor Flash Rising Card Houlette (stripper deck principle).
Six Foolers with the Miniature Skull (Eddie Joseph mss.) with
Skull for Nord's Skull-O-Cation card effect.
Mint Condition Joseph Silk Vanishing Gun.
Brema Utility tube -- brass.
Owen Magic Supreme Silk Cabby. Red, black and Blue.
Vampire Magic (England) "Smoking your thumb" gimmick. Real
collector's item. I don't like the electric lighter setup but the
smoking gimmick is beautiful. No chemicals, uses cigarette butt.
Morla's car. Clear plastic version of Koornwinder Kar.
Two German "Manipulator's Appearing Canes". Metal.
HIMBER'S TOPPER...hate to let go, but I don't use it... this is a
precision metal card box used for the effect that has a razor
blade dropped in with the deck and all the cards becomes cut up
into little pieces except the chosen one. Has other uses. Chrome
and gold embossed Morroco leathr covered!
Bob Read Scissors change to pair of glasses.
Paul Fox Salt Gimmicks, two, one large ala Fred Kaps, second is
smaller for close up.
Brema type Nut and Bolt (Nut comes apart to get off string held
by spectators). Also second Nut only, English made.
4x5-inch Massey Slate -- beautiful.
Steve Dushek's Diminishing Card deck. Specially printed cards.
Grant Original Flat Model Money making machine (rare)!
Slate, held vertical, about 6x18 sliding panel for predictions.
Supreme Magic (England) Paper Tear "Rabbit Return" Free with
first person to buy 2 or more items! Wowso...
Tannen's "Room for Doubt" Mystery with tape recorded voice to
make moves. Very popular in the 70s. Mint condition (I used
another version).
Owen (Les Smith) made fire bowl with dove pan type lid. Surefire,
no chemicals (except lighter fluid).
Wooden (painted) Nest of Boxes. I think is Berg made. Simple one
man... there is a slot in the back of all the boxes you can fit a
watch into. As the final box comes out the back shuts and locks.
Doc Albo has the same set in his collection.
Original 'BUMA' Cube-A-Libre -- funny routine where numbered
blocks change to order of second stack. A classic effect.

Re: M A G I C

The long wait is over, from the first "scoop" announcement here on
MAGIC! to this, the first anywhere review. M A G I C - An
Independent Magazine For Magicians has hit the streets, or at least
this street, today. An extremely sophisticated cover with a very
intense photo of Lance Burton. The cover is so strong that it takes
a few moments to realize that you are looking at a magazine.

Inside is the cover story on Lance's new show by Mac King, a FISM
report by Stan Allen, "Magic's Fabulous Baker Boys" by Mark Walker,
an article on who's performing where and what to see of magical
interest in Massachusetts by David Oliver, and nine columns - From
The Editor by Stan Allen, Letters, Parallax by Max Maven, an
Editorial by Jeff McBride, Inside Magic - a three page news feature
similar to the old newsletter, Step-By-Step - eight pages of tricks
by Richard Kaufman, Product Reviews by Michael Weber, the Lighter
Side - this time an article by Dana Daniels and Laura Saylor, and
Finally - a features column with an article on the magic done aboard
the Space Shuttle. 48-pages in all.

The new magazine is defined in Stan's Editorial column, "Part of the
reason for publishing this magazine is to have an effect on the
ever-changing world of magic. Hopefully, make a statement, raise a
question, create a stir that evokes some serious thinking about our
entertainment art. For too long, the let's-try-to-please-everybody
theory has reigned supreme in magic. I'm _not_ looking to please
everybody every month. I _am_ looking to cover the art of magic,
good and bad."

Does the magazine measure up to that statement? Hard to tell from
just the first issue - we'll have to see. But there is certainly
something a bit renegade, a bit avant-garde about the look and feel
of this first issue of M A G I C. And there is probably enough
diversity to actually appeal to almost everyone in magic.

The opening salvo, after the Editorial, is Parallax by Max Maven.
This month Max covers "the metaphysical state of doveness" (I am a
sucker for lines like that!) along with some semi-inside admitted
cattyness - "Meow Mix - Dear Michael: The big book is very nice,
but isn't thirty-five a tad young for a career restrospective?" A
column in which Max is clearly going to be Max - no holds barred -
just like he is here on MAGIC! The veiled references are a bit
reminicent of the Conversazione in the Englishwoman's Domestic
Magazine of the 1860's - "A young lady of sixteen sends us 'A
Sunbeam', and begs us to be lenient.  We will, by saying nothing;
bat, at the same time, requesting her not to do it again." But my
bet is that just like computer folks begin reading PC Magazine by
turning first to Dvorak's column, M A G I C readers will first turn
to Parallax.

Inside Magic is actually inside M A G I C. The same up to the
deadline news that was so great in the old newsletter, this time
including a shocking revelation of a potentially fatal disease that
one can get from working with doves! The news will be a bit slower
since even inserting it at the last minute takes a few days longer
than what a newsletter could deliver but the three pages are still
pretty "hot" (there is even a story about MAGIC! going
subscription). I miss the television listings and the resorts
listings, but maybe they are only out of this first issue - don't
know.

Throughout the magazine there is good layout, great photos,
excellent illustrations in the tricks, and a very nice "look." The
typestyle, spacing, etc. is clean, clear and easy, although I don't
care for the "jaggies" on some of the computer created headlines.

I haven't had a chance to digest all of the other articles and
columns yet; maybe someone else here on MAGIC! will comment on
those. But I would say that the overture promises a great show!

I have just uncovered a small box, wooden, beautifully made, painted
black. Inlaid in one corner is a small Domino.
.
In the box are two pairs of Dominos showing a 5 and a 2. There is
also a fake Domino (does not fit in box, is added or switched in)
that shows the 2s on one side and 5s on other side.
.
I think it is made by Eddy Taytelbaum.
.
Anyone know what the routine or routines MIGHT BE?

Found the instructions for that strange coin box in the red purse.
It is a "betting" game, the sucker tries to guess if the coin is heads
or tails... some very sublte handlings and a triple chance to win on
the final go... which is the quarter does get rid of the gaff at the
end as we thought... but Ken's handling etc. is clever. You load the
shim onto the half under a dollar bill.
So there you go.... also found the quarter size set of Okito Okorto?
boxes and the Kaps routine and the Kaps large chinese coin stuff and
instructions... what a day... opened up only two cartons!

There is an Eddy Taytelbaum effect called Dizzy Dominos which is

Howie bought it. He might know, but don't think he's signing on

Re: WHAT DO IT DO?

didn't know there was a book titled ALBO 7... Will go look onlyh
thought there were five books... duh... hold it a minute....
YIKES there is even an ALBO VIII. i didn't know VII WAS 7. DUH.
Yep the Dizzy Domino WITH ROUTINE is in there and a snapshot of
the very same prop is included.
YOU DID IT... WHAT AN EYE !!!
And I couln't believe how much of the Martin Stuff in the Albo
book 'USED TO BE MINE' .... arghh... But good thing. One of them
IS STILL MINE and I got to call and get it back. A holdout made
by Martin. I also shot a lot of the old black and white pix of
the Martin stuff when I was in England at Les Cole's house. The
aluminum dove, the table to add cards (like gambler table) for the
cards across. The coin shooters. I still have ONE rising card
deck, a vanishing (round) Birdcage with Martin Pull, and the
candle flame thru silk, like Fred Kaps used. Somewhere, I haven't
found it yet, is the coin dropper in a cigarette pack, one at a
time into a glass.
.
Oh, warning. There is a foreign dealer advertising a ring into
glass, visible... like Copenetro. Hank Lee handles. Looked it over
at a friend's last night. It is made very badly. The ring needs to
be about the size of a single strand of wire, with no stone, or it
won't fit into the gaff. I could be fixed up but the ring has to
be so small it might be tough to find one that will go in it.
Also the vanish box is a ripoff of the little box with the side
panel that flips up...can't think of name... "something Quarter
oh... yeh LIPPINCOT box... Wrong kind to vanish from. But I worked
out a handling for the guy. That is easy to change tho... I would
do a different vanish. Harbin was very successful just having
someone hold the ring (?) under handkerchief (with fake in corner
of hank) why go to any more trouble.

I felt pretty stupid there for a minute til you found Albo VII. Glad
it worked out. Ron Allesi had a big Taytelbaum sale a couple of years
ago and I remembered the catalog and checked it out. Good. Howie gets
mad at me when I talk about him, but he flew up to NY and bought all
the Eddy stuff in the catalog. Some pretty neat stuff and I thought I
had seen the domino effect in his magic dungeon. I'm frothing at

I may have to stay an extra day just to get some in - or not sleep.

Re: AUGUST GENII

I live in Los Angeles, but spend many months a year travelling. At the
beginning of this year, in fact, I had some problems with credit card
fraud -- someone claiming to be Evan Katz and using my VISA. Since
cleared up. I've been married for three years, let's see what else...
I'm a little over five foot tall, have thick, curly hair, and write for
a living. Also I do research for my father-in-law, hence the trip to
Hawaii -- he's a hydrogen bomb manufacturer, and in addition to writing
comedy scripts, I help him engineer more efficient nuclear fuses -- not
something I ever studied in school, it's a skill I picked up in my
spare time. When I'm not writing or helping my wife's father, I do
volunteer work for an organization that polices publications for
not using enough quotation marks. We read a lot of stuff, use OCR
(optical character reading) software for a lot more stuff, and
basically make sure people are putting the things they're supposed to
be putting in quotes. If not, we write a nasty letter to the editor
along with a copy of Strunk and White. Last figures I read show that
we've increased the use of quotation marks in the publications we cover
by a statistically significant sixteen percent. Let's see... what
else... Did I tell you I'm under study by the government? A team of
biologists studies me twenty-four hours a day, because I exhibit a very
rare, but potentially valuable syndrome -- under the right conditions,
live monkeys fly out of my behind.

And one more thing -- if I ever catch this Evan Katz guy who's been
impersonating me, I'm going to have a word or two with him!

Videos
MAGIC!-NL Fri 30 Aug 91 12:27
Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:

You said that the LACK of a legal video CREATES a market for an
illegal one. Does this mean that if a lecturer does not supply a
legal video, that it is his own fault that illegal video's will
start appearing?
This carries the suggestion that one MUST supply a legal tape, that
is, if one does not want to be robbed.
An illegal tape is pure thievery, nothing less. People who make
illegal tapes are nothing more than low-lifes and common thieves.
They deserve no respect whatsoever!
To suggest that to prevent these low lifes from stealing, one must
supply a tape oneself I think is topsy turvy thinking.
It is criminal minds who make possible and support a market for
illegal tapes. Not the lack of legal tapes creates the illegal
market, it is
thieves who create it!
The idea that this market is created by a lack of legal tapes
suggests that at least part of the fault is with the lecturer, it
suggests that in such a case it is less of a thievery, as if one has
a RIGHT to have a tape of a lecture.
Too many people feel that they OWN the magician who is doing a
lecture, that they have a right to everything, simply because they
have paid the admission price. The only thing one has a right to when
paying the
admission, is what the lecturer wants to give, nothing more.
If the lecturer does not want to supply a tape, of course one can be
disappoeals it.

--lecturer, so be it, but that does not give
anyone the right to take more than what is given, and steal.
If the lecturer does not want to supply a tape or allow video's to
bemade, that is his right, you have to accept that. It is not his
fault that some do make illegal tapes, it is the fault of the crooked
minds with their incredible greed, who think they have a right to own
everything. Please do not put the blame on those who do not want to
put out a legal tape. Thievery is thievery, even in those cases where
the seduction is higher. A good person is capable of handling this
slightly higher
seduction, those who cannot resist that, have an extremely low
treshold and should be treated with disgust, we should make their
lives miserable, they should be kicked out of magic clubs, denied
access to the bulletin board, they should be tarred and feathered!
The fact that there is something available to be stolen, does not
make good, even in the slightest, the person who indeed steals it.

Lectures
MAGIC!-NL Fri 30 Aug 91 12:26
Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:

reply to mess 1082

I understand from your message that your intent is to get the total
effect from a lecture. Although you have the right to expect from a
lecture what you want, it certainly does not mean that that is also
what the lecturer wants to supply, let alone HAS to supply.
I myself for instance never had the intention of teaching people my
tricks. I do not explicitly want people to do my tricks, although I
do not really mind all that much (as long as this person doing my
effects does not work in the same circuit in Holland!!!!).
You see, all I want to achieve in my lecture is to inspire people.
To show how interesting and deep magic can be. The thoughts you can
put into
magic. This I can make visible bytalking about the little nuances.
I do not talk about the little nuances in order to teach people my
trick! So after the lecture, people do not really need any video.
Actually it would be better if one forgets about the tricks, and
remembers the fact that there is a lot of detail to magic.
This, I hope, will inspire the attendees to put the same care to
detail into their effects.
Since this is what I want, I do not supply a video with the lecture,
it is totally unnecessary for achieving my goal.
That this goal might be different to your goal, well...I am sorry.
When one attends my lecture, one gets MY lecture. If it is different
than what one expected, I cannot help that. I will continue it the
way I feel it is best, and that means no video! I understand you feel
you need a video of a lecture. I feel, with my lecture you do not.
And when you
attend my lecture, you attend it on my terms. If that disappoints
you, well, you have the right to be disappointed. I do not want to
teach you tricks. For what I prefer to teach, no video is necessary,
it could even interfere with my goal. When a lecturer does a lecture
with the intent of teaching, then of course he can provide a video.
It might help his goal. What I try to say is, that it is the intent
of the lecturer which decide what and how things are done. That is
the deciding factor, not necessaraly what you would like .

- seeing Slydini the first time and being one of the spectators

- seeing Goshman for the first time (a story in itself for telling

- seeing Walter Cummings for the first time (included because it was

- seeing Derek Dingle the first time
- seeing Vernon the first time
- watching David Roth work (I already knew the effects but the impact
  was still great)
- watching Bob Read the first time (rolled on the floor!!)
- seeing Al Flosso work and the first time I went in his shop!
- seeing Senator Crandall work
- every time I saw Fred Kaps either on TV or in person
- Ken Brooke
- Moretti and the sword box
- Tommy Wonder (then Jos Bema) doing the cups and balls
- Alex Elmsley's lecture
- the pure joy that Milt Kort exhibited when performing
- Steve Freeman's soft touch with a deck of cards
....got to stop...they keep pouring out!

I apologize. The reference to H. Rosenthal singing was a very inside
referrence to a true story that I thought Pete and Max would have
heard. Pete apparently has not so I can't be batting very high on
this one. It is kinda one of those "You had to be there" things...or
at least you need to know the individuals.
Harvey is a fairly well know close up magician who unfortunately has
a rather bad problem with stuttering. However, Harvey plays guitar
and sings quite well and totally without any stutter at all. Once
Harvey was riding with Howie Schwarzman who was driven and explaining
an effect to Harvey at the same time. As the car speeded down the
road, it was rapidly overtaking a slower moving truck. While Harvey
was very much aware of the pending collision, Howie was intent on
explaining the effect. Harvey twice tried to tell Howie about the
truck but couldn't get the words out. Finally, as the rear bumper of
the truck loomed near, he sang out acappella "Howie! Watch out for
the truck!"
Well...you DID ask if anyone knew of magicians who sang.

I hope you got your office moved and everything is back to normal. I
was talking about you the other day with Glo as we ran across your
picture when we were packing the dining room office. Moving to TN
puts us one time zone closer to the left coast. That's a plus as
well. Give us a holler sometime. Glo says hello to your family.

Tommy, that is it on the head! That was Tannen's (SPINA) argument.
Ken Brooke would want to make only a limited number of a certain
effect. That way you might be the only one in your area with the
trick. That was Ken's (and often the inventor's) DESIRE. Spina would
KNOCK OFF COPIES saying, "Well my customer called and said he
wanted the trick and Ken won't wholesale to me so I *HAVE TO MAKE
THEM* ---------- He is saying 'I HAVE TO STEAL!!!!!!!!!!'

a small town named ZAMORA and he said, "this is where I got the

He used to have another great name (tho we didn't use it in the

turned out to be the name of a paper boy in one of the towns he

TO: Tommy Wonder

Tommy - I agree with you 100% about the culpability of thieves and of
those who would have their products. I certainly was _NOT_ condoning
thievery! But any time an item is unavailable, it does create a "black
market" value for it. That occurs in every market from drugs to very
rare paintings. I think that a lecturer has to be aware of this black
market and to consider it in the equation when making a decision about
video-notetaking.

Well, we keep our some of our Widows in a large box called a garage.
Those are pretty easy to collect web from, using a stick. Also, they
are a pretty good deterent to burgulars attempting to enter the
property from that direction. The ones inhabiting the shubbery we try

Interesting story! But I really think one could do an interesting
singing magic act - In close-up, the mage could sing the patter - "I
take the card and put it in my pocket..." and on stage he could have a
back up group, barbershop quartette style - "He took the card and put
it in his pocket..." I think it would be interesting.

Oh, as for Walter Gibson's way of beating writer's block, I presume
you're referring to the four rooms he had set up in his house in
upstate NY, each room with its own typewriter. With four projects going
at any time, if he hit an impasse on one he would simply pick up and go
into another room and resume writing on another.

I'm currently 60,000 words into writing a book which will end up
close to 100,000. Everytime I feel daunted by this I consider that
Walter would've considered it a quickie...

Well, at least the lecturer should consider considering it. I do see
one very major point in Tommy's message - the TYPE of lecture. For the
most part, attendees tend to consider most lectures as concerning
effects. I can understand the idea that no tape is necessary if one is
providing theory or other "non-effect" material.
I still think that a blanket denial of video-notes as an extension of
the lecture format is an abrogation of real thought about the concept.

was wrong with our VOICE QUALITY lines, and suggested we pay to have

DATA quality line. The problem appears to be solved now as we just kept
re arranging our phone system until we found a line that did not have
the consistent noise problem. This fix just took place a few days ago.

I see no such implication in my statement, Max. If, indeed, you have
seriously considered video as a means of extending the lecture format
and if you have decided not to for solid reasons after such
consideration, than you should certainly not feel that you have made an
inappropriate decision. As a consumer, I would hope, of course, that

governing factor in your own decisions.

Re: DIARY - 8/30/'91

A very nice afternoon at the Castle. I had lunch today with MIKE KING,
MARVIN STERN, and Marv's son DAVID STERN. Lots of good magic
conversation. After lunch we attended a Parlour audition. The poor
fellow - who I intend to leave nameless - had some very good material
as well as some pretty awful material. BUT his main failing was his
lack of performance value and performance technique. A few times, he
got some sparse applause for some OK stuff, but the really good stuff
died on the floor - one reason? He never paused appropriately to let
it sink in that he had just done something pretty terrific. I'm told
that he didn't get a booking.

Paul Green performed the luncheon close-up show. Very good! Very
charming, good audience involvement and good material - perhaps
following the Biro rule - after the previous session he was great!
Good show.

Greg McKay, a MAGIC! member, auditioned for close-up - I didn't envy
him with JOHNNY ACE PALMER in the audience! (Among other "notables").
Greg did some nice stuff - don't know what the outcome was.

Then Johnny told me what I guess should be a *NEWS ITEM* here on MAGIC!
He introduced his fiancee, Miss Susan Ann DiMagio, and said that they
WILL BE MARRIED NEXT MONTH! Best wishes to Johnny and Susan!

After the Castle I dropped by Hollywood Magic and found both WORKERS 2
and JIM SISTI's MAGIC MENU 1ST ANNUAL compilation on sale. I've
already commented on Workers, Jim's compilation of material from the
first year of the Magic Menu looks very good.

be he does not do it anymore. It is no good to do an act if you
can only do it a few times a year. But you are right, his act was

Well Pete, will we ever win, I do not know, but I do know that
the main problem is not that lecturers or dealers do not supply

acceptable! We should not accept it, tarr and feather the
thieves!
Send them to Siberia, or better still we should force the
bastards to learn palming! Too many times the theft is covered
by the cloack of 'It is logical that he staels, if he cannot
acquire it in a normal way'. This I suspect comes from a feeling
that everyone has a RIGHT to everything. It is greed and a lack
of respect!

Of course, when something is not available, the seduction to
stealing becomes larger, a black market value starts to exist.
But I would not like to include this in the equation at all. I
feel one
has every right to sell something or not and one should never
consider that when one does not supply, that it will attract
thieves. It is a different matter. A different problem. I like to
keep these things seperate. Keep your freedom about what you sell,
and anybody and anything which threatens your freedom should be
fought. I do not want to be pushed into a certain direction I do
not want, just to keep thieves off my back, I prefer to do things
as I see fit, and fight the thieves if they are there.
Otherwise these crooks would get things their way, I would supply
because of the mere threat these thieves are making!

first is the Ken Brooke range of magic, the effects of his that I

aid Joe in selling Ken Brooke line of magic... WE DO HAVE SOME

and a couple of odd close up items.

Just borrow a 3/4 inch recorder and dub to 1 inch to master it and
run your dubs off a 3/4 inch copy master. Forget it, just steal a
camera and do it in the back yard. Having birds chirping in the
background would be quite pleasant for mid winter watching in the
Yukon. Call em Biro presents "Magic in my backyard" Vol 1. No fluff
videos for 22 bux postpaid. Let's really test the perameters of this

Re: T A WATERS VIDEO

TA's video has some excellent magic on it. Not complicated at all
and with the right presentation (TA requests that you apply your
own creativity to the effects that he presents to you) simply
knockout to the uninitiated. A couple of prediction effects that
again given strong presentation would make their tongues drag the
ground. I've got to go back and look at, I think it's called Triposte
again to pick up the important details. Very strong. I could play
this one for real. Last time in Nash I did a boon writer thing in
the demo studio with two cats. Simply "wrote" down two numbers and
then hadem give em to me. Pretty funny and I never took the boon
off the whole time. Waited about a half hour til I could dig around
in my briefcase for something. Triposte is ten times stronger.
If T A is sold out, I'll send you this one when I get finished with
it and you can send it back to me when you get finished with it. I
should try to find a copy of my video for you. The one that went #5 o
CMTV. It's the reason I've been hiding out for the last six years.

Re: VIDEOS

The great Dutch magic began when Henk Vermeyden used to take in
students. Henk trained them in the acting, lighting, production
values and creativity. His foremost student was Mystica, who later
became Fred Kaps. Altho they had a falling out later. Henk also
worked with Richard Ross and Ger Copper. Not sure of the order.
Though Ross had a big assist with Ger. It is just like a swimming
situation. For awhile a certain area has all the olympic stars.
That is because the great coach was from there and the coach will
"pull" students from all corners of the country. So they seem to
all be from same area... only learn in area.
The Long Beach Mystics are the same as Holland... a great number
of the members all made it to the big time. Partly because of the
stimulation of one against the other....

Re: T A WATERS VIDEO

T A 'IS' sending me one of his video tapes. Will check it out.
You wanna killer standup try Al Koran's Gold Medalion. There have
been several improved versions on the market, but for sheer simple
Koran had it. I worked one out with Finn Jon using a military type
medal. I think he either put in lecture or marketed it. Used a
shell and was very clean. But the nice thing about the Koran mode
is there is no gaff and it is all sell.
Alan Shaxon's "Confabulation" (triple prediction) is another killer
effect. There are other ways to do it, but Shaxon's is the cleanest.
(I know TA or Max will come on and let us know of a cleaner method)
(I hope they do) -- as the Shaxon one does require preparation.
Not "H" -- (carbon paper)... Fogel's Second Spot (Psychometry) would
be right up your street. It is all Horses hit... the ability to
schmooze verbally and verbosely is all you need...
I once did this for a woman's group and even with my type of crap
gags... they thought I was a real psychic... was scared for sure!
I also have a neat dictionary where all the pages in it are the
same (except a few at front and back).
In my fumble opinion it would be NO SWEAT to put together a fairly
strong mental act (trick/prop-wise) and the key, of course, is all
in the PERCEPTION of the audience. This being accomplished by the
visual/verbal acting ability of the worker. Being a total dummy
sitting there in bad clothes acting like you yourself have no idea
how this is happening would be an approach I would like to use.

I view the Bamberg family as the epitomy of Dutch magic history. The
era of Henk Vermeyden brought about an entirely different set of
performing geniuses. My interet in magical woodworking led me to the
life of Okito which caused me to examine both forward and back as
much as I've been able. I am very impressed with the Dutch magicians
of today also. Perhaps the size of the country and the hard border
conditions of the past caused them to gather together in support of
each other (and criticism I'm certain); much like the famed Long
Beach Mystics. I have an appreciation for both American boldness as
well as European style.

From what I have seen, both Max and TA are both masters of the
subtle. The boys go, "show us a trick, tabman!" And sometimes I
do. I tell em that what they are going to see might make them think
that I have mental powers beyond that of a normal human, but I
assure them that it's a trick. Since I'm bsing half the time, all
the time; they don't know whether to believe me or not. When they
want me to do it again for somebody else, I tell em I can't do it
but once or twice a year. It's just too darn draining. I have been
pretty good at predicting their future thus far. The triple predict
on T A's tape will slay them. Prof El Tab II

It was when Jay moved from the real time discussion and began his

I just got told by Pete Biro that a man named George Joseph does some
pretty good miracles with Gambling (card) techniques. I was wondering
if you have heard of him. I never have. Like I said, cards have
always held a ceartin "mysticism" for me. I worked in a magic store
for about two years owned by a magician (go figure, right?) and I
worked with two other boys besides myself. One worked stage magic,
mostly livestock, the other worked parlor and stage, roses candles and
the like, and I did close up. But I grew very fond of cards, and the
rouines with them comprise 90% of my magic (dare I say, collection?) I
do enjoy Gambling routines, slights, etc. I found that after a while,
nobody would play cards with me, even if I was playing straight. I
think it was Harry Anderson who said, never play cards with a
magician....Hmmmmmm. One more thing, have you heard of Louis Falanga?
He made a thick booklet called Lake Tahoe Card magic, and it might be
of interest to you.

Re: VIDEOS

I would prefer being quoted a bit more in full, Max. There were two
statements in that message, of which you quoted 1/2 of one. The first
was, "Well, at least the lecturer should consider considering it." and
the second was "I still think that a blanket denial of video-notes as
an extension of the lecture format is an abrogation of real thought
about the concept."

Actually, until a year or two ago, I wwas 100% on your side of this
issue. I had several very reasonable arguments for my position. But
what I have come to realize is the the use of video has changed -
personal videotape and computer diskettes are now, at best, the
paperback books of our society. They are, quite literally, disposable
media. They are no longer more sacred than pencil notes.

This, of course, is quite distinct from the other uses that the
technology can be put to - commercial television and commercial grade
videos.

But the issue has apparently taken on an emotional intensity quite
beyond the scope I would have expected. I feel that the forces allied
against my position - both in quality and quantity - have provided more
heat than light on this topic. This leads me to believe that the real
issues are significant and yet that they have gone unspoken; or perhaps
unspoken in a manner in which I am clearly seeing their significance.

Re: VIDEOS

THank you for your insightful message, Tommy. I believe that my
original about thievery was a reply to the suggestion that the release
of video-notes would encourage thievery. I was pointing out that the
reverse is actually true - that the release of legitimate material
(with a profit to the magician) at a reasonable cost actually REDUCES
the value of the black market material.

The key point of the entire thread, in my mind, is that as creators and
producers we MUST come to grips with the newer media such as videotape.
That we must understand them as new and unique technologies, _not_ as
mere extensions of the television experience, and that we must learn to
use them as a part of deriving income from the creative process, just
as the various methods of performance (live, television, videotape),
lectures, lecture notes, and the sales of books and manufactured
effects are used. I really believe that the day in which we could
simply shun these newer media is gone. History is full of examples of
individuals and groups who have tried to fight off the rise of new
technologies and they have all failed. The first ones to master the
creative potential of the new media will hold the future in their
hands.

As I've indicated before, I think you are simply wrong in equating
note-taking with taping; the one requires personal effort and
involvement on the part of the person, the other is automatic -- and
note-taking provides an outline, while taping is A COMPLETE RECORD --
and -- to keep saying this -- the lecturer is providing ONE experience
of his lecture for the fee set; he (or she) is not giving you that
experience in perpetuity or in a form that can be experienced by others
not present at the original occasion. The two things are very, very
different in process and result and cannot be equated.

David, this isn't about new technologies; it's about thieves. Look --
I live in a less than upper class part of Hollywood, and I rather like
it. As it happens, twice in the past week I have been subjected to
physical attacks in my perigrinations about my neighborhood. That
these did not succeed is irrelevant, except that I am still here to
talk about them. The point is that it's a reality that there is a
rising level of violence in this society -- but what am I supposed to
do in response? Simply accept that it's dangerous and stay home? Even
if people put out videos to "lessen the value of black market tapes",
they are still responding to an illegal act.
New technologies often present new ethical questions; this ain't one.

MAGIC!-NL Sun 01 Sep 91 02:18
Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:

An interesting bit of history on Vanni Bossi. If there is one man
who is dedicated to achieve perfection, it must be him. It is a
story I heard a few years ago and could not believe. Beginning of
this year I met Vanni and asked him about it. The following is
actually true!
Years ago he was doing a routine involving a chinatown half, the
one where the hole is filled with a piece of paper or something
like
that. He wanted to display the coin on his hand and he was not
totally satisfied with the flesh coloured insert. He felt it was
not a perfect match. He then proceeded to cut from the palm of
his own hand a piece of skin! This was placed into the coin. The
hand
healed, and he had what he thought a perfect chinatown half.
The only problem, it turned out, was that since the skin was no
longer connected to a living breathing person, it started to
discolour. But what a dedication! To cut into your oown hand
yourself! And continue to nicely remove a circular piece of skin.
He told me he had done some research on how to do it in a safe
way,
nevertheless I am not too sure about this type of dedication.
A little less would be okay with me.
Thought I should let you know this.
Bye.

Re: VIDEOS

In general, look what the embracement of television has done to the
American family (I know your family doesn't watch much, but ya'll
ain't a normal family). It has been a poor substitute for a mother's
love and a father's understanding. The average child watches six
hours a day. That is 1/4 of their life, just sitting watching
somebody else work, have fun, make a living, etc. We are becoming a
nation of voyuers who cannot read nor write effectively. There is
trouble brewing in River City! In the past, to learn generally about
Magic, one requirement was the ability to read for understanding.
I am glad I grew up without a television in our home (as a lad).

Several years ago, we visited the British Isles to promote a record
I had out at the time. I was so pleased, not only with the response
to the tune, but to the interpersonal relationships that were
established during that time. Just to hang out with some guys at
a neighborhood pub and enjoy a game of darts. To have art transcend
political and cultural boundries (granted, the British Isles aren't
that different, but I've enjoyed hanging out in a hut in SE Asia
having lunch and a smoke from some kind of community water pipe too)
is one of the things that makes artists so important.

The Ken Brooke stuff sounds interesting, I remember when Joe first
got the state-side rights to that stuff, and hammered the hell out of
it for a while, but now it never gets mentioned in his ads, least not
as much it seems, course he has his hands into SOOO much...
Still, I don't think many magicians would care much if you lost 20 lbs
b4 making a video...its not like everyone in the rest of those videos
is off of VH1.
Concerning your comments on all that is necessary anymore to be a
real pro, I must agree whole heartedly! I remember reading Fitzke,
et al who said virtually the same thing 50 years ago! We magicians are
so wrapped up in what effect/sleight/gimmick/ etc etc that we lose
sight of what is entertaining to REAL people. I don't know how old you
are, but I would guess mid-late 40's, and being 32 myself, it pleases
me that you keep up with whats "hip".
Of course, magicians, especially magician/modem geeks/computer nerds
are definitely not normal....

The crossbow I am using is a Horton. Well made/black fiberglass model.
I hope in the future, when things get going (if they do) that I will
use several different crossbows. I also intend on doin a version of
MOVIES TO LIFE, with the push towards Robin Hood/Crusades type film.
I think it could be fun if done correctly. I surely have the contact

I looked back and can't find any way to determine how the ER got

you mention it, I do have a theory - thanks.

Re: VIDEOS

Your point intrigues me. I find the idea that one is not paying for a
complete record of an experience when one attends a lecture to be at
odds with my notion of what a lecture, by definition, is supposed to be
all about. It seems to move the lecture away from teaching and towards
performance and confuses me - perhaps within magic the term "lecture"
is not defined in the same way as it is in general use?

The notion of personal involvement and effort is a good one and I can
see where the knowledge that video-notes will be made available could
damage the degree of attention that a lecturer has a right to expect.
But the same thing seems to be happening with paper notes when they are
sold. As you recall, the topic of video-notes surfaced as a result of
the discrepancy between David Roth's statements that "it is in the
notes" and the reality that it was not. Paper notes sold at lectures
seem to create lax attention without providing complete reference
information later (let me qualify that - please insert the word "some"
where appropriate).

Re: VIDEOS

Thieves were, I believe, a peripheral issue to the video note
conversation. The conversation originally began with a discussion of
the David Roth lecture and I believe that the thieves issue became
involved due to the concern about the tapes being copied. An
interesting point was raised by Dante Larsen when he suggested (and I'm
paraphrasing) that bad lecturers would lose attendees as a result of
the tapes becoming available.

I am very upset by hearing about the attacks on your person. Very. As
you know, an attack did "succeeed" all too well on Jimmy Grippo in
January. He has been left with chronic pain and physical problems as
a result. His comment was, "Why did they have to hit an old man? I
would have given them the money."

I have my own thoughts about this - thoughts that you, as MAGIC!'s
CHIEF TORTURER, would probably find amusing. But, as usual, I'm going
to ask that we keep the discussion focused on magic.

Re: VIDEOS

I agree about television. I believe that Harlan Elison, who has
written a great deal of television, described it as "an inherently bad
medium." For many years I thought he was wrong - I have come to the
conclusion that he is RIGHT. Its very nature makes it impossible for
it to do anything other than what it does.

But I would caution you that television and video are two completely
different media. It is a mistake to attempt to understand the two as
one entity.

I do agree that "we are becoming a nation of voyuers who cannot read or
write effectively," BUT I do _not_ agree that the ability to read for
understanding should be a prerequisite to learning about or practicing
magic. While I cannot name any blind magicians off the top of my head,
I am aware of several who are either dyslexic or "learning disabled."
A handicap should not be a barrier to access to magic.

Clearly we DO have different definitions of lecture; if I am

of my skin and making a small piece. Matter of fact... this might
be a new invention.... I would like to have it 'LOOSE' so it
can have a piece UNDERNEATH that matches my close up pad... or the
surface of my TABMAN TABLE TOP.... you show the coin in hand, with
the flesh colored piece... and it drops out when you turn it over
and then you have the second color patch for the table display.

That's cool. You were probably just getting into Magic when I hatched
in 45. I got into magic a few years later.

Re: VIDEOS

No Raiders over here today. Redskins on tube tonight. I like to watch
em loose. They got no loyalty to their quarterback. They ain't figurd
out the real work yet (the coaches, etc)!

Re: GAMBLING ROUTINES

Pete, I saw George Joseph work at one of the Desert Seminars
several years ago. I believe he was just demonstrating some dice
switches. Some were good and some were so so. I do have his
three tapes on gambling and his manuscript "Card Mucking" The Art
of Switching Cards in Play. I found the manuscript interesting
if for no other reason than there is practically nothing written
on this topic. I would consider the tapes to be of average quality
compared to some others that I have. In most cases, I think the
really good stuff only travels by word of mouth. Gamblers are not
like magicians when it comes to keeping secrets!!!
