I used to belong to the International Order of Old Bastards (IOOB) and the policy there was that when you sponsored a new member you had to pay his first year's dues. I've thought of going back and issuing a set of his collected MAGIC! messages, but we'd have to issue the book on microfiche - and even then the postage would be a killer. It is always hard to tell how much distortion was introduced by the writer, but there are some very interesting key phrases in the article: "It _does_ 'have a pig face,' Michael admitted. And it has 'a squiggly tail.' But, he addded, 'it's not a pig. It's a primitive piece. They knew what it looked like when they chose it.'" I wonder how long it will really be before it is removed. I also wonder what gem will replace it. I sure hope it will be the old birdbath, but I guess we will just have to wait and see. Well, I was THE WORS T player going and everybody beat me. One day I was playing Norman Carlson, the sax player, and I beat him. We played again and I beat h im again. Feeling better about myself as Norman was one of the better player I challanged him to another game. He said, "Do you want me to play with my left hand again, or should I go back to using my right?" Needless to say, he beat me the third time and we both had a laugh at my expense. There is a point to this story, I just don;t feel like expounding as I'm tired from my 21 hour trip to AC and back for a late night lasagna supper with the great Tony Roy, star of the LEGENDS show at Harrah's. And what's the first thing I do? Here I am. You were right about Tony Roi. It was Letterman he was on - 4 times, All My Children, Today, Entertainment Tonight, Regis and Kathy Lee; so I guess you DID see him on tv. A super guy. Thanks for encouraging me to check him out. He wants me to take over his management, and I guess I might. I must meditate and see if it will be right for us both. Bone Pony must have my first obligation right now since I took them on first and I can see where Tony would really be a full time job. As you must of guessed by now, money is not my god. It is then shown on a TV set. Here is my definition of VIDEO. --Someone videotapes an image. It is then shown on a TV set. . Generally, TV is done by professionals at great expense with talent ed people, well trained, etc. and they do shows with scripts and good actors. Generally Video (the home variety, of which is the most common) is just some dope running around with a Video Cam, that moves it too much and has no training and no script)... but the physical thing is the same. There is a huge amount of stuff that is out there no one has put in print and that many do not know the "how"... for example, since it was part of the EXAMPLE mentioned... the Routine Ricky Jay did on TV with the same "kind" of cards used in MacDonald's Aces. (Note I did not just call this MacDonald's Aces) the principle is not Mac's... the routine Vernon published is. Anyway... there are some very subtle and INNER moves of Ricky's in there that are still HIS SECRET. Some are contributed by other knowledgable card workers, and are not available in the magic shops. . The main point "I wanted to make" and I BELIEVE YOU HAVE TO JUMP ON PEOPLE HERE, BECAUSE THEY JUST DON'T LISTEN AND THEY REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DON'T THINK IT MATTERS. IT MATTERS. YOU DO NOT COP OTHER PEOPLES WORK. KORAN SAID, YOU "ARE STEALING A MAN'S WAY OF MAKING "HIS" LIVING" WHEN YOU NICK HIS STUFF. Sorry, Gang... but this is one thing I will NOT BACK DOWN ON, if someone doesn't get it YOU HAVE TO HIT THEM BETWEEN THE EYES. Seabrooke sed it in his lecture. You but a trick. (The example he cited was the little sabre saw sawing in two)... You set it up in the living room. You see it every day. You think about it every day... then one day it hits you, what to do with it, how to present it. He says do this with all the stuff you have and plan to use. It will get your mind going. Then DON'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT. Most people STOP thinking about the stuff when they have come up with ONE SOLUTION. . This thing, about doing what the guy you just saw does goes back a long way. AS KIDS IT HAPPENS AS THAT IS YOUR ONLY LEARNING WAY... but the sooner you grow out of this... and for corn sakes... so many magi that I see at the club meeting level JUST DON'T THINK IT IS WRONG to keep doing other peoples stuff. . I remember the great TV star, Paul Daniels, coming up to me one night at the IBM in Boston. He said, "What can I do? The man in charge of ETHICS at the IBM just told me that "I never got much out of the professor's nightmare until I started to use your patter' -- the man thought it was OK TO USE MY PATTER! And he is IN CHARGE OF THE ETHICS!" . Well, I rammed it home. I told the story the NEXT DAY AT THE BEGIN- NING OF MY LECTURE! About the woman with the large you-know-whats? Got a little upset. Not too upset, a little upset. Not to say I don't like breasts. I have a firm position on breats. Firm -- get it? A little joke there. Anyway. Got to admit I got a little upset there, fellahs, all that talk about those large breasts. There it is again. That word. Breasts. Guess we can't ignorit. Try as we might. Breasts. Anyway, I put to thinking for a while, and was wondering if women reading those messages might not get the wrong idea. Not about breasts. They can't get the wrong idea about those. After all, they know more about them than we do, right? Another little joke there, catch it? Maybe women might think we were, what's the word... hold on, let me check this new-fangled dictionary thing... objectifying them, that's right. Seeing them as body parts. Not that I don't like women's body parts. Don't get me wrong there. Love 'em. No wimp factor here. Think they're the best -- women's body parts, that is. Particularly American women's body parts. Though some of those women down in Latin America have some pretty fine body parts, too. Don't tell anyone I said so, though. Politics, you know. Democrats. Liberals. Be all over me like fleas on Millie. Not that Millie has fleas. Barbra wouldn't allow it. She gets sick even hearing the word "flea." Did I use those quote mark things right? Wouldn't want my pal Evan to get angry at me. Weird fellow. Good-looking, doing well, but insists on going out in public buck naked. Without any clothes on. Indisposed. Get my meaning. Strange fellow. Maybe he'll grow out of it. Anyway, back to breasts. The word, not the concept. Or do I mean that the other way around? Breasts -- only part of the woman -- that's the breasts I mean. Let's go easy on those things, okay fellas? Ladies could be reading these messages. How would they feel? Particularly if they don't have ones that are as big? Pretty damned bad, if you ask me. Danged bad, I mean. I well, time to go. Thanks for the forum. Some time to talk. Break in the routine. And maybe you could get that Biro fellow to Fax that photo over to the good old W house. For research purposes, you know. I think if you re-read Bill Wells' messages (he is the one that publishes the IBM Programs) you will see that most of the time we never hear from the lecturer about the lecture... Actually it is IBM Policy to NEVER BOOK A LECTURER. We can't afford it. What we do is to book acts and those thaty say they want to lecture are given a spot to lecture. This gives them the opportunity to sell things and make additional money. However... this rule CAN BE and HAS BEEN broken. One example was the Jaks Lecture. The next MIGHT (WE HOPE) will be T A Waters. In the meantime, what usually happens is that there are so many details to putting a convention together that the CONTENT of the lecture is ... or HAS NOT BEFORE ... been a concern. We didn't know anyone (or at least I didn't) really needed to know, I guess. always figure if the guy is well known, and I like the ACT, it is a good chance that I will like the lecture. However, if it is, say a guy that does Kid Show stuff, like David Ginn -- I HAVE NO INTER- EST IN KID MAGIC so I don't go. . The problem with US (ME WELLS ETC) is PROBABLY that we assume any one going to a convention knows magic, and knows the performers usual area ... doves... illusions... etc. . BUT IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE WRONG... and you will note, we are going to do something about it! . So.... good has come from this discussion. . NOW.... IT IS UP TO THE REST OF YOU TO HIT THE SAM, TAOM, ABBOTTS, TANNEN, MID WEST, ETC ETC ETC ETC.... . Mebbe write Stan Allen.... In reviewing your message I did find two VERY interesting thoughts. One was the idea of letting thinking occur - the suggestion that you place the prop in view and go about your business for a few days until you suddenly know what to do with it. I know I don't have the quote exactly right, so consider it a paraphrase, but Einstein once said something like "The older one gets, the more one comes to realize that one cannot impose one's will upon the chaos with brute force. But one day, while sitting under a tree, eating an apple, an idea will politely present itself and say, 'Here I am.'" The second was the notion that people often stop when they get the first thought for an effect. Frankly, until you mentioned it, I'd never thought about that. And it is powerful stuff, Pete. Just because you can do _something_ with it doesn't mean you are doing the best something with it. Glad you made me go back and re-read your message. All of us have a tendancy to rummage through the messages here on MAGIC! and just think about the one-liner we can shoot back - sometimes makes us miss the gold. He is a fine magician not too well known, as far as I know, in magic circles. I first met him 2 years ago when, by coincidence, he, I, and Carl Andrews -- all Hoosiers -- were working the Magic Castle the same week. Kevin and I did the Close-up Gallery, and I watched his act several times during the week. As you know, Kevin doesn't emphasize original material. Rather, he does an extraordinarily smooth and professional job with marketed routines (examples: Caveney's linking coathangers, Seabrooke's burned bill and cigarette through coat, etc. -- all with little change from the original). He does this consciously, knowing it is not the sort of thing to get him invited to magic conventions, but also knowing that he has very strong, proven material for lay audiences, which is where he makes his living. (He does have a few original items, and they are very very good, but this is not the emphasis of his act.) Anyway, I was most impressed watching him at the Castle. He is a good looking guy, with almost a Robert Wagner perfection (this isn't a cut; I'm just describing a look I'll never be able to attain), and has a great voice that carries well, without a mike, in a large room. Also is quite skilled at sleight of hand. ** All this is lead-in to the fact that my wife and I went to see Kevin perform a couple of weeks ago, and others may be interested in the venue. We first heard of the engagement via large ads in our local (Bloomington, IN) paper. Kevin was to appear at a nearby state park lodge called Spring Mill. (Turned out to be a beautiful lodge in a beautiful setting.) The ad stated $10 per person including dinner. When I called to make reservations, I was offered 3 choices of entree, to be selected in advance. The big night arrived, and we showed up among the first to be seated. There were 3 seatings in the same room, 15 minutes apart. The entire room was decorated in a magic theme, with cards on the walls, and top hats on each table filled with toy bunnies and wands. As we engaged our salads, Kevin stood among the tables comprising 1/3 of the room and did "close-up" magic. Strong reactions from inside out bill, floating bill, etc. He repeated this same set twice more as the rest of the diners filed in. As we all waited, later, for the final 1/3 of the group to finish their dessert (the pre-selected entrees moved dinner along nicely), Kevin walked around and greeted each table individually, sometimes just chatting, always leaving a little magic gift with kids, and sometimes doing a card trick. He was great at this, working the room as an extension of the hospitality of the park management. Eventually, dinner ended, and Kevin took the stage to do his parlor act. I didn't time it, but it was probably about 45 minutes of very strong material, much of it "standard" to magicians, but new to this room and all of it enthusiastically received. Kevin tied it together tightly with little running gags and bits. A brief impression of David Copperfield played great. (Melinda also does a great Copperfield.) When he finished, he told the audience that he would meet them all at the door on the way out, to make certain that no child left without a gift. Kevin has worked it out with Indiana to play the parks throughout the state, and it was clear that the management of this park wanted him back soon. To sum up, Kevin was a real credit to the art on this night, and it was nice to see magic performed superbly in a setting where I've often seen it performed poorly. ** I'll close with a non-magical, non-Kevin King note. My wife and I just spent the day at the Indianapolis Zoo, watching friends prep to move two whales from Indy to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Most impressive. I'm afraid many people will copy the presentation exactly as you did it, thinking they are PERFORMING. . 2- I particuliarly liked the post effect explanations and the suggest ions for directions a person might take the effect. If you could have given a few thumbnail sketches of how a story or performance stategy could be wrapped around the bassic effect, I think you would have performed an even greater service to the art. . I found the tape to be very concise and to the point, and since I prefer visual learning I thought it was very good. . I think this is a perfect use of video. In one hour I got to go thru a lot of magic and pick out what appealed to me and perhaps use the PRINCIPLES presented to develop my own routines around the excellant ideas presented. It would have probably taken me a month of part-time reading to get the same result. . Thanks - good job. If we were sitting around in a magic session I could show you half a dozen variants.... uh.... do you belong to any kind of a magic club? Go to a meeting and rap with someone that does a lot of coin stuff. I would need the context of the routine, the size of the coin, what your style is... what kind of a natural look your hands have when handling coins... IT AIN'T EASY... since coin handling is, contrary to what others might thing, ART... it is very individual- istic. If you are talking about the Roth routine where you want to drop the coin (indetectably) out of the shell -- I find the French Drop position UN-NATURAL FOR ME, incedentallyk, you might trr holding the coin at 90-degrees to that position IE: parallel to the thumb (hand, arm parallel to your body) with fingers flat, under coing -- you can let the coin drop out and into the finger palm much easier in that grip. Good luck... and remember this stuff isn't learned overnight, or in a year either! Check the Bobo book for possible substitutes as well. Ah, Jade is coming by today.... I will show her the move that I just described. If and when you see her at the Castle or the Comedy Magic Club in Hermosa, ask her to show you what I showed her today. Say to yourself, "OK I have four coins. I want them to fly, one at a time from hand to hand... now, with the moves and knowledge that I ALREADY KNOW... how would I accomplish this?" The first coin, in particular is a dead easy one, as no one yet knows what you are going to do... so you can just get one ahead tossing the coins from hand to hand. A great handling to learn is known as the Kaps Subtlety. THis does, however require a larger hand to coin ration (note I did not say "large hands"). Kaps could do it with a Silver Dollar, I need to do it with a Half, and Quarters are ok for smaller hands... The SUBTELTY IS: You have a coin classic palmed. NOW hold the hand palm out in front of you, angled downward. Fred's killer routine was done kneeling (there was a reason to get into this position based on a lead in effect) but when not Kneeling he did it standing behind a table -- the fingertips nearly touch the table surface. OK you and the spectators can see the coin in the classic palm. This knowledge is what Kaps used to come up with this amazing item. Now, with coin in classic palm -- somewhat favoring being up toward the thumbheel muscle -- REVOLVE the hand SLIGHTLY INWARD (if right hand anti/clockwise) NOT TOO FAR... NOW, THE KEY... move the thumb only to the left, almost with its tip touching the tips of the 3rd and Pinky.... If you are in the right position the thumb heel covers the coin and the spectators THINK they see all the inside of the palm. I know this is tuff to describe in word alone... will try to show Jade... hope she can recall it all.... Maybe can give here a sketch or polaroid pic. Agian...good luck... The greater the weight, the greater this imbalance becomes. The difference in postage costs poses a somewhat sensitive issue for the I.B.M. and the use of a surcharge to deal with this has not been universially popular by any means. If that's what you call backslapping, then let me say that I am very proud to backslap Tabby Crabb because I consider it an honor to know him regardless of this board of this board or you. I feel I am fortunate to consider him a friend. . What in that message to Tabby suggests that I am ignoring David's message? The very fact I am responding to Tabby's message about David's message contradicts your statement. Did you misunderstand my remark to David about not liking my use of the abbreviation "BBS" and think I was somehow impling his bad vibes message should be ignored? Well, you are dead wrong, mister. I have been very concerned about David's message and have exchanged messages with him privately about the concerns and suggested possible resolutions, one of which I think David is likely to implement. I have also made a couple of phone calls about that message. . Where do you get off with the "rose colored glasses" comment? It is a FACT that this is one of the friendliest bulletin boards I have ever signed onto. Whatever problems you seem to have with this board don't mean that I am wearing rose colored glasses if I don't share those problems. I suggest you ask David if he thinks I have in any way "invalidated" his message. . Finally, what is your basis for saying this is a "WIDELY REPORTED problem..." Neither David's message, private communications with David, nor a review of the message base for the past six months supports your statement. I note that others have also questioned this being a major problem and you seem to be trying to talk each of them into believing it is. . I regret posting a message like this. It is the first time that a message on this board has made me angry. I waited overnight before writing a response, but I am still angry when I reread #18423. You seem to be hell bent on making this bad vibes business into a major problem even if it means twisting the positive comments of others into something negative. You also seem to be the only user who has responded in this fashion to David's original message. . Evan...if you have some personal problem with me or my views on this board then lets discuss it in private and get it over with. My participation in this bulletin board is primarily a recreational activity on my part. I have no interest in fighting with anyone or being accused of saying and doing things which I am not doing. If this is an example of the kind of board you want, then count me out. Apparently you feel the board was much better when you first joined and I am beginning to think you might consider my coming onto to the board as one of the factors you don't care for. The board did fine before I was here and I am sure it can do fine if I leave or stop corresponding in the public message base. I have far too many other committments to waste time on innane arguments or petty grips of small minded people. . I hope we have both gotten our two cents in. Now lets put a halt to this crap. Lets clear the air here and get back to what I and a lot of other people apparently think is a very healthy board. Msg #18863 Dated 10:56:52 09-13-91 -> 18874 From: BILL WELLS To: EVAN KATZ (X) Re: BAD VIBES Evan...I think you should reread my message #18366 to you. You seem to be reading a considerable amount of hostility of some sort into what I said. I wasn't attacking you. In fact, I started out by agreeing with you on the need for new members. I have been talking to David about that concern for some time as I feared the subscription fee would keep new users away from the board. I still think the fee will be a major obstacle to new members and in fact may be one reason we seem to have lost a number of the newer members in the past few weeks. I also said I didn't think you had said the main purpose of the board was to teach magic to beginners, but rather than certain of your comments made me feel you were implying that to be a primary purpose. If you go back and read #18165 you will see that your main points were "new blood", "newcomers", "distribution of knowledge...should be our first concern...", "...be generous with knowledge and patience." and so forth. If I was incorrect in assuming that a newcomer to the board meant something other than beginner in magic than I was wrong. At any rate, I certainly don't see the need to throw words and phrases like "loud mouths", "ugly words", and "pervasive snobbery" into what I thought was a friendly discussion about the purpose and nature of this board. The tone of your message is certainly not in line with the comments you made regarding how you think folks should behave on this board. In fact, since you were trying to claim some guilt for some of the concerns you discussed, I thought I was saying to you that you shouldn't feel guilty because I for one at least didn't think the concerns voiced to David reflected the real situation on this board. I mentioned the Ricky Jay thing because Pete had already mentioned it in another message related to the bad vibes discussion and because somebody (I don't remember whom) had in fact posted a message asking for details on Ricky's method of performing the effect. I know Ricky well enough to know how he feels about these things and I can assure you that he would not want his methods discussed or being used by anyone. I thought the response to the request for info on Ricky's method might have been one of the reasons behind David's message. Ricky's method is not in print, so citing appropriate texts doesn't cover what he does. Personally, I don't feel that use of the Erdnase "patter" is appropriate since it is so identified with Ricky. Finally, I am not reading any fears into anything with it comes to sharing. I have devoted a great portion of my life to sharing magic with others and I believe my activities both past and present will stand for themselves with regard to that question and without further discussion here. I did NOT say that MAGIC! should not be for newcomers. I said "I do not feel that the main purpose of this board is to serve as a forum for magic newcomers to learn about magic." The next sentence went on to say "I believe that magic beginners CAN learn about magic here..." Clearly the learning of information about magic can be a subsidiary purpose. . I think it best for the board if we simply drop this entire discussion and move on to other things. I had no intention of offending you or upsetting you with my response. I think the tone of your reply is a bit unnecessary and that nothing will be gained from a continuation of this discussion between the two of us. Somehow, I think in all of this that we are striving for the same goal...lets focus on that rather than what seems to be some sort of misunderstanding or personal peeve. I conducted a seminar in Hilo once - with folks from California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa and the Trust Territories of the Pacific. It was one heck of a meeting! For one thing, the hotels there, as opposed to those in Honolulu, never have meetings, seminars or conventions, so they have no mechanism for dealing with them. We were set up as a "tour" and I was on their books as "tour director." This meant that they felt it was wise to pass every scrap of info about my "tour group" on to me - I was kept constantly informed of who ordered lunch, who had late night visitors in their room, etc. And, at one point, they told my boss that he had to have my approval to change rooms (he was not the sort that thought it was funny). One of the finest evenings I spent in my life occurred during that meeting. Anita and I ended up talking to the representative from Ponape. He was a very bright fellow who had been educated by Catholic missionaries and had gone on to get a Bachelor's and Master's from U.S. colleges. He told us the story of how he had fallen in love with a girl from Truk (another island in the Territories, one who's natives are known for being war-like and hostile). Her parents refused to consider a husband from Ponape so, one night, he and some buddies went over to Truk in a canoe and they eloped! From his description, it was quite something, as the boys on Truk knew he would try it and were out after him! He said that no matter what other accomplishments he had made in his life (he was pretty high up in the local government), he was always treated with respect because he was "the boy who stole the girl from Truk." At the end of several hours of this incredibly enchanting tale, he sighed and said, "Someday I'm going to write a book." I smiled and said, "It's already been done." "Oh!" he said, "Who did it?" "Shakespeare," I said, "It is called Romeo and Juliette!" He said, "Never heard of him!" And he meant it! Give a neutral presentation of the technical and theoretical parts of an effect and THEN just a few ideas of HOW these ideas might be worked into a full performance. It gets the viewer thinking about how he/she might utilize the trick part to their OWN best advantage. . So many videos are done with the performer's ACTUAL method of presenting the effect, and the viewer may NEVER CONSIDER ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE. They end up never giving it any thought they JUST END UP CLONING the other guys material, and that's what we have all been griping about. I worked with a guy from OCMC that does illusions at the Orange County Fair last year and he has one of those goofy-cheepo chairs. It's so wobbly his 'hypnotized' assistant has white knuckles all the time she is suspended. I suggested he tie a balloon around her feet to give some alternative solution as to why she was 'floating' and not just being levered off the stationary chair. . He didn't get it ! I said the act would be much stronger if he left the suspension out as it really was weak. He said, "I can't I paid $ 300 for the chair, and I want to get my money's worth." What a jerk. I decided to quote low: $85; they almost blew off my ear. So I mostly work at the two resort hotels here for people from out of town. There I can get California fees. There is one other magician here - Bill Lawton - he worked a magic bar in Hollywood many years ago, and he works as jack of all trades and magician at a local guest ranch. 'Way to go. He was decrying Randi as saying all those untrue things about him. He recounted his charges in the suit he has against Randi, and then challenged Randi to refute them. Turn to Randi in the studio, and of course he replies he can't answer the charges because there is a suit pending. Then Joan London hands him a stainless steel spoon from the CBS commissary, the camera cuts close up and he bends the spoon. I think it broke, because he dropped it at the conclusion of the bending rather than holding it up for all to see. But it was a good bit for the lay audience, and Randi got his points across that Geller is just a conjuror. NOTE: All letters are "verbatim" as written, remember English was not Fred's native language! Any comments or clarifications by the editor are enclosed in << >>. < > 8 August 1978 Pete: Just back from a wonderful 4 weeks at Phillipe Fialho's place in the South of France and here I find all kind of letters with goodies from a guy from Long Beach!! Great!! Nice to hear from you again Pete. Because of the holidays I don't have much new to tell you but I will try to get the page full! Just before I left for Phillipe's I taped another Special for the BBC with John Fisher in London and I had a hell of a bill!!! Norm Nielsen, Slydini, Glen Falkenstein and Siegfried and Roy. Thing that went over best was Biemans' Ring on Stem of Wine glass. And you know where that idea came from!! < >. Johnny Paul was to be taped next day but I did not see that because I was already home to pack for France. However I did attend a so-called lecture that he did for Ken and I don't think that everybody was very satisfied. He just went through his tricks that he does at the bar and although you can see he knows what he is doing it just is not the same when he does it for a packed room of magicians -- where you don't have the correct atmosphere. Furthermore he did not explain any methods he uses so when going home they just saw a magician do commercial tricks. < >. Brother Hamman also was staying at Phillipe's and he is something else!! All day he sits there and invents tricks, plots or methods!! It is amazing how much material he comes up with. I guess he showed me at least 6 different new ways to count cards and 4 entirely new plots and tricks. Don't know when you saw him last but I am sure he will make your eyes pop. Really fantastic stuff. I counted the Hamman tricks that I use regularly and came up with 20!! At the moment I am again on the finger ring tricks. I am collecting everything on the subject and then try to combine the best effects into a routine. At the moment I already have more than I can use but you never know what you might come across. Threading a ring on a rope ala Roy Johnson (ring on thumb) I do now with a silk!! Not so easy but very pretty indeed! Just now Phillipe phoned to tell me our "joke" is working: We spread the rumor that I am entering the competition at the FISM in Brussels next year. So now there is a big panic!! Klingsor is afraid that he will get only a few people to enter the competition now and those that do are scared stiff!!! Please keep it a secret!! I might not even go to Brussels. The convention is held 20 minutes out of town and away from all the hotels so how he will manage to get all these people back and forth all the time is a mystery to me! Anyway we will see what happens. < > Pete, do you know anything about a thing I saw advertised as the Upside Down Topit? If so let me know if it is interesting enough to order or not. < > Well, Pete, I guess this is it again and will now start playing with the toys you send me! Thanks again! Any comments or clarifications by the editor are enclosed in << >>. < > 7 December 1977 PETE: Great to hear from you again! I went through my back mail and found three unanswered letters from you. Sorry! Anyway here we go! The revue I have been working in so long has finished now for good. We may be doing some shows for firms here and there but no public shows anymore. Have some conventions to do in Germany and England and Austria plus here and there club dates and T.V. and maybe not as busy as before it keeps me occupied. No! I did not publish the 11 Bill routine and did not give Mike Caveney permission to do it because he never asked me! I feel sad about this because I thought he was a decent fellow. Well what can you do? < > Maybe I will tell the story one day. Have had tremendous fun with the Takagi Cup and really fooled the boys! Have some really fine handling on the thing and also doing an entirely different version using the full cup principle! The final load is in the cup during the complete routine so comes as a complete surprise when it appears. (Don't talk about it yet!) < > We are planning a reunion kind of convention where nobody pays anything but his own expenses for hotel and food. There will be no other entertainment but ourselves so everybody has to do something to fill the weekend. We think of asking about 40 people so it will be kind of intimate with lots of close-up. When are you coming over? You are invited! Ricky sent me his book and had another good laugh! He is quite a character! Ordered Fickle Fire from a dealer here in Germany. Should have it by tomorrow. Received the bill for it already! Will see Ken < > the 18th of December when I will go over to London to do a magic day for Ron Mac Millan. Phoned him yesterday but he was not in, so I spoke to Frank Farrow < > and he told me Ken is doing better and better! I am looking forward to seeing him again. I will have to do some close-up as well over there and am thinking of doing the Takagi Cup. Flip < > back from Japan told me he saw Takagi doing my Giant Chinese coin trick for television in Tokyo. Said it was well done! Johnny Thompson will be on the box tomorrow from Germany. It is a show from the Olympia in Paris. (Did he ever appear there or was he put in from another show?) Hope the picture will be sharp enough to put on video. Have about 12 hours of magic acts now!! Also was asked to appear on the Close-Up convention next year, 28-29 April, but I don't think I will be able to make it. I guess I am going to get another lecture together to visit the clubs in the States. Wish you were here to write the notes! Have enough stuff they have not seen yet. Am doing Peter Kane's Gypsy Curse truck with unprepared cards now. You should see the faces of the magicians!! Well Pete, that's all for now! All the best and Merry Christmas!! Every time I say to myself: I am going to try that and answer him tomorrow, there is another letter again with more ideas!! Slow Down!! Kidding aside, I always enjoy your letters. I will try to tell you a few things that have kept me busy lately. Vanni Bossi, from Italy, sent me a replica of my Chinese coin but it is 7 1/4-inches in diameter. He had it made for me just as a nice token to be used as a paper weight or maybe magic. I have chosen for the last and so I can now carry the coin with me easily and produce it as an extra kicker anytime anywhere. You should see the thing! It's impossible! The Magic Day on Dec. 18th was another disaster for me!! No dressing rooms, so we had to dress in some dirty kitchen. No curtains and last but not least 2 terrible musicians who really killed my finale!! I can never understand the people who are organizing conventions or shows why they spend hundreds of dollars for the acts to bring over and then save on the music that kills all the expense. Anyway, it is another lesson. What can I say about Garcia? I don't think I am going to fight him and give him some extra publicity because it will always be his yes against my no. I am sure that in 1959 when I was visiting him in his apartment in New York that I told him about my version of Wild Card with Signatures. Maybe he cannot remember that and now thinks he invented it. Who is going to prove anything. In 1963 I did it on Dutch Television. So maybe it is the other way around. When in London for that Magic Day I had to do some close-up as well so I wanted to do my 11 Bill trick but the organizers had put somebody in the first part of the show doing it!!! So I did the solid Takagi Cup instead and killed them with it. I have not done much with Jack Pot Monte yet, but going through it I think Side Walk Shuffle is better! We will see later. At the moment I am busy for a magic convention in Germany day after tomorrow. Have to do a show and a lecture plus sitting in a panel for a magic discussion. Also I will show the films again. < >. Have not decided if I want to plan a lecture tour this year or next year. Have to get things organized and have to decide what I am going to show. Also I like to do a lecture for not more than 50 people so everybody will be able to see the close-up ideas. Have lots of notes but too many things are too good!! Will take some time to get everything worked out. < >. Andrew Galloway just sent me his new book on John Ramsay. I find it even better than his first one and as you look at the illustrations you believe you are looking at Johnny's hands again. Very well done, and if you like this kind of stuff or have known him it is a must. Cyril Faranov, from Johannesburg, visited me the other day and told me that Jeff Busby is selling David Roth's Portable hole routine. Do you know if this is true? If so I like to order it. Received Fickle Fire from Germany and they work fine. Have not used them yet but altered them a little and made a pair of magnetic holders for them so I can use them over and over during Msg #18984 Dated 8:46:26 09-14-91 -> 19034 From: PETE BIRO To: ALL Re: FINAL TODAY NOTE: All letters are "verbatim" as written, remember English was not Fred's native language! Did not find time to write you earlier because of many things to do at same time. Did Blackpool < > convention and it really wore me out! It's only a one day convention but on that one day I had to do 8 close up shows plus 1 stage show and the rehearsal. After the show we had to drive back to Paul Stone's in Liverpool where I spent the night. Was I pooped! Did not have time to stop in London to see Ken < > but phoned him and he told me he is quite happy in his new apartment. Paul Stone has a shop in Liverpool and is the only dealer in the World to handle Ken's stuff. He had a copy made of a video tape of the Parkinson Show Television I did on Christmas 1976 and for the first time I could see what a good show we did! Together with Ricky Jay and Richiardi Jr. 2nd of July I am going to tape another show for the B.B.C. Television with John Fisher directing: Fred Kaps' World of Magic. He is in the States at the moment to look for some talent we could use in the show. Booked myself for the Wichita convention end September < > so maybe I will see you there if not before. Jay and Fran < > also will be there. I will ask Jay if he can fix me some new lecture notes if I can have the ready. I will spend the month of July at Fialho's place which will give me time to write the notes. Next month off to Vienna to do 2 shows for IBM Computers and some lectures inbetween and in end of May a convention in Krems also in Austria. April 22 Television here in Holland. Peter Pit phoned me some time ago to tell me that I was chosen as Magician of the Year! I was quite pleased but when I told him that I could not come to Hollywood in March to pick up the award he dropped the thing and told me that in that case I could become Magician f Next year!!! Strange!! I guess they only want a cheap way to get an act! When in Boblingen in Germany I met a Dutchman who is a fine mechanic and he made me a cigarette through coin that can be shown on both sides!! Fantastic!! Broke the Himber ring that Hans Trixer < > in Rhodesia made me and had a hell of a time to get it to him for repair because of the political situation. Anyway he received and apart from repairing it he also will make me two rings that will match the Himber in case I want to do some Impossible Routine. (I intend to!!) Well, guess this is about all for the moment and I just hope you will be able to squeeze in that day here in Utrecht in May! I am free! (signed) Fred- < >. When someone doesn't I tune out pretty fast. When they do have it, I can watch the same act over and over and over... . I don't know your performing background... but when I was working steady (and others tell me the same) NO TWO SHOWS ARE EVER ALIKE. . You can say the same words, do the same tricks, but it is the audience, the venue, the mood... a myriad of elements that combine to make it. . You can even do the same stuff, for example every show for a week at the Magic Castle and KILL one night and the next DIE... . It usually is the audience that makes the difference. . A very few "artists" have the ability to RE-ADJUST mid show and bring a bad crowd UP (a little)... but most just dig deeper holes for the burial of that particular performance. . On art. I don't know how many watched the PROGRESSION of Shimada from skilled magician to ARTIST. It all happened when his stance, look, and EYE MOVEMENTS took over. He discovered he could misdirect a theater full of viewers WITH JUST HIS EYES. . What an amazing change in his act that made. === END OF MAGIC-58 ===
