Re: KEVIN KING

Nothing is ARDUOUS if you love doing it. A truly pro mage can't do
enough shows in eight hours.
.
Not that I am a great pro (or was) but I recall one night at
Disneyland -- it was magic theme night -- and they hired a huge
bunch of magicians to work all over the place. And Disneyland has
these nicely dressed creeps that walk around with clipboards and
inspect and rate everything and everyone.
.
I was at the beginning of the street you enter on... and was asked
to work on the steps of some little old shoppe... to do x number of
standing shows to stope a small crowd. X number of shows per hour.
.
It was going well, I was having a great time and decided to really
GIVE and skipped taking breaks. Doing about 1/3 more shows than
the contract. The audiences were enjoying it, etc. etc.
.
Then about 2 hours or so into the evening... a couple of the
Disney Jr. Executives called me aside and said, 'DON'T DO SO MUCH...
YOU ARE MAKING THE OTHERS LOOK BAD, THEY LIKE TO TAKE BREAKS...
and so on...
.
This really fried my brain... here you are in an entertainment park
and the folks walking by are loving what you are doing, you are
loving what you are doing and some MANAGEMENT TRAINEE types come
over and tell you your work ethic sucks.
.
No wonder corporate AMERICA is so screwed up and there is so much
white collar crime... it comes from the same mentality!

When and if you go to see Max the Maven... try to behave like laymen
and react in the right places! There is nothing worse than for a
magician working a laymen venue to have a load of magician's show
up... the reactions are always in the wrong places (I have seen
them applaude steals before the production) (not that Max does
that kind of act).

Just realized something. You talk about California performing
prices... how do property prices compare? If it costs less to live
in the boonies... its a wash.
.
I was showing a friend from Akron, Ohio around and when I told him
the price of houses he nearly died. A Million Dollar house we
looked at would be under $100,000 in Akron.

Re: VIDEOS

At first, I was going to ask you how you were going to be able to
comment on your video if you were that far away. Then I remembered --
you are a mentalist.

To me, the funny thing about some of these 'bits' is that the do lead
to potentially interesting ideas sometimes. For example, there are
LaserDiscs that take advantage of the two sound tracks, normally used
for stereo, to provide live sound on one and commentary on another -
the viewer can select which to listen to, or can use both. There is
also the capability, on video-tape and on LaserDisc to use closed
captioning. I'll bet some interesting things could be done with these
extra channels on a magic video.

Re: CHAIR SUSPENSION

Stan- The best I have used was built after a design in the Harbin book.
There are several out there, but to my knowledge, they all work
basically the same way. Using one BEEFED UP chair with gimmick to
accept tang on the board or harness worn by girl. I remember seeing an
Italian guy years ago do a chair suspension with a almost nude girl.
It was very effective. Talking with him after the performance< I had
a chance to examine his CHEAT and it was a real thin harness, not
unlike the kind used on most three sword suspensions. Also he used a
girl who had a dance background and she was able to hold her legs, and
other body parts rigid during the effect. I guess one of the things
that you need to ask yourself is whom will be suspended in the thinest
of air. I remember Paul Osbourne printing a version of this a few
years back in his Genii column. You might contact him, or if you are
a member of the Castle, check out back issues of Genii in the library.
T.A. Waters has been a great help with my research on levitations.
The book I recommend is the Mickey Hades book. I will do some looking
around myself. I am currently building a levitation for my new act and
one for another performer. I have constructed I think two different
chair suspensions, so I will go through my notes and see what i can
find. Will get back later. Hope all this chit-chat helps. MIKE.

Cornealis title explains the basic idea without going into any details.

Inner Sanctum was the scarest bit of theatre ever produced, your
mind created what no movie or television ever could.
.
My point to TA tho was that with video presented the way he did, 1 hr
with LOTS of different effects (which would have filled a book) is a
quick way to pick out the ideas you might use. Augment this with some
ideas of how it might be presented and I think you have a dyno-mite
combination.
.
I think books are better for theory, but suck for explaining the
techniques and sleights. Video is far superior for that aspect. Let
the media do what it is best at. Give me a book with the theory and
a tape to augment it and show the technical details and you've made
the best use of BOTH means of communications.

Re: CONTEMPORARY ILLUSIONS

We had a very interesting experience this morning. We were invited to
tour a Space Shuttle simulator that is being completed for a children's
museum in Caracas, Venezuela. The simulator uses a battery of
computers and LaserDisc players, along with a lot of sophisticated
equipment to allow children to experience a Shuttle trip into space.
Nathan was the pilot and a little girl, also about 3 years old, was the
co-pilot. The simulation was incredible. I don't know what an actual
shuttle flight feels like, but this sure felt like what I would
imagine. The monitors on the instrument panel showed an external view
as a pre-disced narration described what was going on. Through the
"windows" we could see the journey just as we probably would through
the real windows, and the voice of ground control crackled in the
background. The simulator provided the sensations of take-off, the
shock of the boosters and, later, the ancillary tank dropping off, the
roll, pitch and yaw manouvers, and the landing.

It felt _very_ _real_ and was, of course, accomplished by many of the
techniques that can be used in magic. The feeling that one is turning
about 45-degrees is really an illusion, as is the rest.

A truly interactive magic show! I'm just sorry I didn't think to bring
a deck of cards to do a trick while we were "in space!"

Re: KAPS BBC SHOW

Pete,
.
One of the Kaps letters refer to a BBC show he did. That show, that
I first saw at the FISM in Brussels, called 'The Magic Show' is one
of my all time Kaps favorits on TV.
He is giving a perfect show there, and is showing a collection of
his famous effects.
He starts with an introduction smoking a spoon.
He does the ring on glass routine...which I saw Copperfield also
do in one of his recent shows....were you involved????
.
He does his chinese sticks routine. He gets a very good response
with his routine. His patter is great and I wish I could reshow this
tape here on the BBS. tough I assume you have that tape.
.
Next bit he does is his homing card. Although I did not see him
perform that effect very often on tape (note I never saw Kaps
perform in reality) the routine he does in that tape is top comedy.
He gets a maximum of response out of that effect. The vanish of the
last card is an absolute 'killer'.
Can you tell me what is the history of that routine and what were
the things Kaps added to it??
.
Finally he ends the show with his salt production.
.
Guests in the show were Glen Falkenstein (Spirit cabinet), Tony
Slydini (knotts separation), Shimada (oriental act).
.
In the same serie Ricky Jay also once had show. In that show he
shows a card routine with all the mechanical toys. With that routine
an actress Susan Anton (if I remember well) was assisting him. She
was apparently not told what was going to happen, as here reactions
were so pure, that this routine has become one of my most favorite
comedy bits in magic on video.
On MAGIC! we discussed Ricky's unique's patters, well this is
another example of it!!

Funny, I was thinking about a water filter just this evening as I
filled a glass of water and had to clean out the filter twice in order
to do it. The water in this area is VERY GOOD, until it reaches my

line and it was really gruesome to see what the old pipes looked like.

But, with the coffee, I have tried spring water and distilled water and
still haven't been all that jazzed. Oh, and we use a gold plated

Re: KAPS BBC SHOW

The homing card is in a Hugard/Braue book, and is fantastic,
especially in Kaps' hands... his acting made it. Then the 11 Bill
Trick is based on Edward Victor's 11 Card Trick, but Fred's
large hands, made it so he could palm the bills. Some point in
that routine he has the bill folded in half, which helps.
The ring on glass (ala Kaps) is from my brain with help in the
mechanical side from Scotty York and Biemans... what is the correct
spelling and first name of Biemans? I want to give him credit in
the book I am writing.
Also, the Copperfield version was on an hour glass, I thought?
This came from two sources (as far as I know). One was Paul Gaertner
who did the ring with the hour glass at the Desert Magic Seminar
in Las Vegas (he was first place winner)... however some of the
work and the method of the switch was from a yet unpublished trick
of Scotty York. Gaertner told me some of the inspiration for his
trick came from hearing about the ring on glass as done by Fred.
.
Actually I don't have that tape, with Slydini, etc. Just a short
bit of Fred's part. I have to stop this message to re read yours

Charlie Randall has just posted H&R4.TXT - the newest list of H&R used
(and some new) books. The posting of this list is always one of the
most exciting events on MAGIC! as MAGIC! members get a day or two lead
over the H&R postal mailing.

The new list is 23 pages long and has a lot of very interesting
first-come first-served stuff. It is in the MAGIC! files area as:

Now you just have to see how fast you can download it, look at it, and

What happens is at the Hilton restaurant, Poppy's, magicians stroll
around performing. When biz at the restaraunt is slow, the magus may
stroll to the bar, and do bar magicThe performing magicians are all
membersof SAM 112. The magic is part of our deal to use a room at the

Re: CARNEY KNOWS!

Carney Knowledge-Y-Copius, ad infinitu.
.
OK, assuming I am right and you buy Carneycopia and tear out all
the trick pages and throw them away.
.
What do you have left?
.
A lifetime of knowledge and theory passed onto Mr. Carney by one
Mr. Dai Vernon for starters.
.
Carney's homogenized writing of lessons learned from the writing
of magical scholars like Devant, Fitzkee, Nelms, Ross, Hoffman,
Hofzinser, Bobo, Slydini, Carlyle, Vernon and many others.
.
Carney's approach and philosophy is about as close to the truth
as one can get. His comedic "interpretations" of the AVERAGE
MAGICIAN certainly underscore his points. Most magi don't
understand the plot. They worry about the MOVES. The real
magician tries to eliminate the move. Simplify the effect, take
it from point A to point B so the audience can see, can realize,
can enjoy what is being presented.
.
Carney says, "Sleights are NOT difficult at all. Maybe the
Erdnase Palm or the Side Steal, but other than that there isn't
anything in magic that approaches the difficulty of playing the
guitar or the piano well".
.
He showed the way 99-percent of the magicians do a simple plot
like the coins across and completey screw up the premise and the
ability of the spectator to see the EFFECT. He showed how you
should do the pass when NO ONE IS PAYING ATTENTION... that
"Misdirection is everything" and "Technique is the INSURANCE" --
for years he had it the other way -- that Technique was first...
.
When you see the PURE LOGIC of his effects. The reasoning behind
each phase, the simplicity of the working, you can see why John
is regarded as one of the best there is at what he does.
.
He showed WHY the wand... to cause the magic moment, to conceal a
badly held lump of coins that "no onc could ever realistically
palm secretly without the hand also holding something visible,
something logical".
.
Carney also spent considerable time showing the difference
between a magi doing a "pass" to vanish a coin and the magi just
tossing the coin into the other hand, so you can pick up the wand
to make the magic happen... then the coin is gone.
.
He also discussed the logic and reason to use a Quarter for the
coin in the bottle and the famed Copper and Silver trick...
"Because you can borrow a quarter, and almost never a half
dollar" and that the confusion of the spectator when you bring
out a half dollar and an English penny and say, over and over
again, "Copper Silver Copper Silver Copper Silver" by the time
you do the trick the spectator really isn't sure what coin he/she
had at the beginning, the copper or the silver... but if it is
the spectators OWN QUARTER... they remember... You then introduce
a subway token, a copper half penny, a magic souvenir coin...
something they will remember... vs. THEIR OWN QUARTER.
.
I could write about 20 pages on what Carney did... that had
nothing to do with MAGIC TRICKS... but with M A G I C . . . YES!
But my phone bill can't take it and you should have something
saved to learn when you get the chance to see him again. Hey,
next time don't pay any attention to the tricks... study his
mind, his actions, his thinking... he has got it!

Re: FRED KAPS VIDEO

Ee;19117
Thanks to San Francisco area magician Bill Wittington, he has
located a source for a very rare magical performance video tape.
It is the famed Ed Sullivan show, the one the Beattles made their
first US TV appearance on... and do you know who else was on that
historic Feb. 9, 1964 show?
Fred Kaps ! ! ! ! The good news is you can buy the tape and it
is a bargain to say the least!
Available from: Barnes and Noble, 126 Fifth Ave., New York,
NY 10011. A phone order number is available: 201-767-7079. The
tape is stock Number 1705367.
The price? A MERE $ 9.95, PLUS Calif. TAX and $4.95 shipping.
My Abbacus says that is $ 15.75. What a deal!
Question. Does anybody know about the SharpVision that projects
the TV onto the wall? Is it any good? Is it expensive? You see the
ads but never the price. Hmmmmmm
Also hear Sony is coming out with similar item.
Just finished viewing John Carney's Video... he does a parlour
show at the Castle, as well as a close up show. It involves a funny
tour thru the Castle as he shows up to go to work, goes into the
various rooms, and runs into a few people.
His "DON'T STEAL MATERIAL" as a "This is not a video of the
shopping club for jokes" line is great... A performance tape only,
but hey, you got the book, you got the tricks.
Nice Miser's Dream and Malini Egg bag handling on the tape
as well as much we already know of John's repertoire.

The idea of performing in exchange for a meeting room is a good one.
Actually, I've heard that it was done very early in magic's history by
a Chinese Troupe in Bolivia - but I don't know about that. Yes, the
folks have to be good when they are in front of read customers, but
that should serve as a stimulus.

It seems to me that there is an old Hungarian folk saying that goes:

Re: CHAIR SUSPENSION

Sorry I did not have a chance toi talk more with you this afternoon at
the Castle. But I had a prior thing with Ed Alonzo and had to finish
with him. Funny, I am building a levitation for him, as well as
myself. The fact that I am building levitations is not funny. It is
funny though, that you are also looking into one. It seems like
everyone I talk to the past sevral weeks is building or buying a
levi/suspension. As I stated at the Castle. I would be happy to sit
down and tell you of the ones I have used or come into contact in the
past. I spoke of the one I built for the Executive Inn tour I did in
1978. The idea of borrowing the chair from someone who had been
sitting in it all night made the effect stronger. I naturally switched
the chair, by giving the spectator from whom i borrowed the chair
another one. Then when i finished the effect, the GAFFED chair went
off stage with me. I have heard many people put down this effect. But
they were all magicians and what do they know. I have been a believer
in all suspension and levitations. GIVEN THEY ARE PERFORMED CORRECTLY.
You should think about your intended audiences and performing
conditions, then decide it the CHAIR SUSPENSION or possible another
suspension is best for your situation.
Again I invite you to give me a yell when you would like to get
together and discuss methods. It would be my pleasure. You can reach
be via Ma Bell at (213) 856-5652. Hope I can help. I feel that if i

Max is out of town for a while so let me respond to this. The effect
is in a book called SHH, IT'S A SECRET and is called The Tune
Detective; the idea is that you position the card 16th from the top and
then ask the spec to name any popular tune. He does so and you deal
the cards for two bars -- given that it will be 3/4 or 4/4 time, you
will always end on the 15th or 16th card.

technical quality of this particular product, I can tell you that they

dump them. Let me know if you would like me to check with a couple of

I am not putting down a chair suspension... just the quality of
those currently beeing advertised in the 300-400 price bracket.
.
When I saw Harbin PERFORM his suspension it KNOCKED ME DEAD... it
is pure simplicity, can be done surrounded (I did it in a garden
party using the "planted" garden chairs) it can be done without
your own rehearsed assistant -- no rehearsal on part of the floatee
is required.
.
My only problem with it, if there is one, is that particular effect

I don't know what any of you are budgeting for this... but you
might consider one of the Zaney Blaney models he has for sale.
His "ladder" susepension is a dream effect.

First time I saw it I had no explanation. You might think that a
dumb statement... but the angle of the floor and the footlights
masked the platform, and I thought he was doing it on a bare stage.
.
Nonetheless Blaney's are constructed beyond excellent... they are
bulletproof and will work right away!

Re: MAC'S ACES

Ee;19146
I have just gone back into the "Inner Secrets of Card Magic" series,
(Dai Vernon's material) and decided to REFRESH my memory on what
the Professor, who is now 97 and bedridded (talked about this with
Carney at length) -- did with the first version, the one without
any improvements.
.
Guess what? It is (in my opinion) the simplest, clearest plot, and
easiest to do, version yet. No stupied "prove" or add on moves...
just a nice clear path for the spectator to follow and understand
what is going on... and be led down the path, and be fooled.
.
There is one IMPROVED variant that a lot of card workers have done,
myself included, and that is to VARY the vanishes of the three
aces leading up to the climax where they all assemble with the Ace
of Spades.
.
We have it made today, as the double faced cards are available in
POKER SIZE already made up. In the early days you either had to use
bridge sized FAKO cards, or learn to split cards, or buy them from
someone that made split cards.
.
The variants to the vanishes that are most popular and easy to do
requiring little skill.
.
First Ace -- do it the way Vernon describes it.
Second Ace -- use one card to scoop up the pile. Do a buckle or
Eric Lewis push off and triple turnover all the cards above the
bottom card. Deal these first three face up cards to the table, then
turn over the last card, which the aud believes is an ace... and it
is not an ace.
Third Ace -- again a single card is picked up to scoop up the rest.
Merely do an Elmsley count to vanish the face up ace, and turn all
over and deal one at a time to table to show NO ACE HERE...
.
The revelation of all aces in last pile. You can just pick up and
show... but I like to delay it a bit... I use two different ways
to do this. Pick up a single card to scoop the pile. This gives you
three face down cards and the Ace of spades face up 2nd from bottom.
You can just do another Elmsley count showing the Ace turns over,
then turn all over, spread and show the 3 aces and one face down
turn it over showing it is the Ace of Spades and all are together.
.
What I like best, but cannot describe very well here is to just
pick up the last pile, which is Ace of spades with three face down
cards (aces) on top.
.
Using the biddle grip I do a Veeser Count. This is similar to an
Elmsley, in that it shows all face down cards, but the face up
card started at the back of the packet instead of 2nd from back.
.
Lets see if I can describe... bear with me... I don't know where in
all the books out there it is in print... but it is...
.
Cards in right hand Biddle grip (thumb at rear, fingers at front,
straddled). With left thumb... thumb off the top card. For 2nd card
place all in RH onto the first card in left, Thumb off the 2nd card
and at same time RH steals first card thumbed off.
3rd card... RH index finger pivots over to left the next 2 cards as
one onto the card in left hand as left thumb appears to peel off
one card (actually two) and the last card is just peeled/dropped
off onto the cards in left hand. This leaves them in the order you
would have them for a standard Elmsley now -- face up card 2nd from
back.
.
The Veeser is sometimes done after an Elmsley count as a THROWOFF
to show the cards do not contain a face up card (they really do)
for the un initiated...
.
I hope this routine and handling is of use. It works like a champ
for me... and it also proves that the Vernon Touch is the way to
go... LESS MOVES, simple plot, clean magic.
.
And the Vernon MacDonald routine requires no real setting up. You
just have to add the three gaffed cards to the face of the deck.
Or you can start that way. It is easy to do the add on. YOu can
have them in the box, start to put away and say, "Let me do one
more for you" or just in pocket and say same thing. Or you can
take the four aces out of the deck, put deck in pocket temporarily
while you do either Twisting the Aces, or Dr. Daley's Last Trick.
.
I like to do Daley's as a small ENCORE to MacDonald's aces...
This gives the spectators a chance to come back to reality after
having just been blown away by a miracle of a card trick.
.
Card news, card news, card news!!! U red it heer first...
.
The long-awaited, secret material, of the famed JACK MAC MILLEN
is nearing completion. THE BOOK is well under way and let me tell
you, knowing Jack (he showed up at the Carney lecture and is looking
great) this will rival the famed Hugard-Braue material of days
gone by. It will be a must for the serious student of magic.

Re: CHAIR SUSPENSION

I thank you for your input. I was not, myself, knocking magicians who
put down the effect. I just have always had the best response when I
have performed a levitation or suspension. It is real magic, where the
audience SEES the magic happen. It is not covered in the box while it
takes place. I have always been a fan of illusions that have little or
NO BOXES. This thinking has lead me to come up with many very powerful
illusions that have been quite well recieved by the audiences. Again
not knocking my brother magicians, but I get a heckuva lot more doe are
(that should read) doe rae mee working for lay audiences. They may or
may not have seen the particular version of the suspension or
levitation that you are performing, all they know is you are floating
a girl in the air and that is GREAT (done correctly) I think there are
many really good suspensions out there, and yes Z.B. makes one of the
best. He is a great magic mind, who has put the years of research into
doing the design stuff correctly. Becky has several great stories!!!
Keep me abreast of the new Copperfield LEVI would love to hear more
about it. I am building something now for Ed Alonzo that is quite
unique. If not in method, in presentation. And PRESENTATION brother,
is what the (lay) audience remembers. I doubt anyomne who has seen
Lances new f**king levitation, cares how it works. It how it looked to
them that counts. And that is d**n good. Always nice talking at ya
Pete. Look forward to seeing ya on the 9th. Take care. MIKE.

Oh yes...I know the Kona coast of the Big Island well. Every time I
have set foot on the island I have made it to the coffee plantation
store in order to buy about ten pounds of Kona Coffee when I bring
home and freeze until I grind it just before using a filter to make
the coffee. It is a wonderful stop!
I gave a speech to a conference at the Mona Kea Beach hotel which at
that time was (and I suppose still in) on of the Rockafellow resorts
and was probably the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. The food
was fabulous and all island grown and produced. The group I was
addressing was the Pineapple Growers Association and they did it all
up in style. We also had an authethic luaua. A driving trip around
the big island offers such a variety from lush tropical conditions to
desert and cactus. I also had an enjoyable stay at the Volcano House
and just missed an eruption (the flow was still warm to the touch by
the time I got there). There are also macadamia nut groves on the
big island (trivia - where did that nut get its name?) and the black
sand beaches. Truly a wonderful place! The first time I flew there
I was on the plane with a clown magician (in full make up) who was
going from Honolulu to Hilo to work a gig. That was years ago and
I don't remember his name...always thought it ironic that he ended up
sitting next to me.

I suspect it will require not only our resources but the efforts of
others as well to resolve what I fear will be a problem in the near
future with getting newcomers to come on and stay. Working together
for the solution is certainly a better approach.

Stan, there are a number of books with many levitation ideas. Granted
they aren't performances.
I think the main criteria for you WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS?
Will it be in cabaret conditions? Full stage? Are you going to be able
to have A LOT OF SET TIME? Are you going to be in one theater for a
long run? What?
Do you need to have it fit in a car trunk or the back seat? Or do you
have a huge truck? How many assistants?
.
Can you drill holes in the stage and put some of the mechanics under th
floor? Do you have complete control of the lighting?
.
Be glad to help.

If you have a lot of money, go have lunch with Johnny Gaughan and tell
him what you want and get him and Stienmeyer to design it right.

Re: CHAIR SUSPENSION

Uh-oh. I think I'm over my head and out of my league with this
levitation idea. The chair susupension sounded so simple and had the
potential for a good impact on the audience. At around $400 it
certainly is more than I have paid for any othersingle effect. I
guess cost-wise the sky is the limit depending on what one wants to do.
As my dad used to say "If you can't go first class, stay home!" It
seems as though it is going to cost far more than I can spend to g et
a good levitation illusion. Thanks for the info though, it saved me
from rushing out and buying something I probably would have been
disappointed with in the long run.
I enjoy doing close-up magic most but I do occasionally do parlour and
stage shows. Right now I don't perform these often enough to justify
the expense but when the time is right I'll know who to ask. Thanks!

the Shure Brothers clip from Radio Shack. I went to Radio Shack and
they did not have one made by Shure Brothers but they did sell me a

broadcast quality, Omnidirectional pickup, 50-15,000 Hz frequency.
Is this similar to what you recommended?

Re: VIDEOS

The effect originally used two computer cards (IBM or Holerith cards;
aka 80-column cards) to identify a selected card. When the two cards
were superimposed, the hole pattern yielded the name of the card. It
was originally inteded as a close-up effect, but the pattern was always
difficult to discern. I turned it into a parlour/stage effect by using
jumbo cards and by placing the Holerith cards on the overhead. By
placing them askew and slowly bringing them together the various holes
create a pattern of flashing lights on the screen - I tell the audience
that this is the computer working. There are always audible gasps as
the cards come together and the name of the selected card can be
clearly seen.
In effect, the overhead projector becomes the stage for the effect.
Yes, it would fit with the DMS MAGIC! session.

NO. I recommended a Shure Bros. clip available in music stores. It IS
NOT A MIKE it only holds standard mike's like you run into in
99-percent of the comedy clubs.
.
If what you got works, fine. It is just tough to come up with a mike
that is always compatible with sound equipment where ever you go. Most
places have balanced mikes. If your mike has the wrong impedence you
need correcting adapters. You really should go to a professional music
and sound store that sells stuff for bands, singers, etc.

example of a business screw up - they were once the largest food chain

I've seen Bokar again someplace. A&P used to carry either two or three
house brands - Bokar in black bag, was it "Four O'Clock" in a red bag?
and, I think, something else.
Yes, we do keep beans in freezer, grinding them via the manufacturing

Meanwhile, for other purposes, I'm still checking out the Azden WMS-Pro
Wireless Mics. They come with two mics - tie-clip and hand-held and
have two channels. They are up in the 169-170 MHz. range, NOT the 49
MHz. range. Supposedly will allow about 250 feet between transmitter
and receiver.

Yes, a BIG problem with anything like the Radio-Shack mics, which are
very good for what they are intended for and for the price, is the
connectors and the impedence. I have a pair of the RS 33-1052's and
they are 800-ohm and have mini-plugs. Need adaptors for most

Re: CHAIR SUSPENSION

Nice idea. I do remember some guy in Florida who marketed plans for a
levitation that really was a suspension. The ruse of the trick was
that the magician stood quite tall in his shoes and sort of shrank
himself, by kinda...uh..sorta squating. I know it sounds a bit funny,
but that was in the instructions. I think your idea od controling the
(that should read0 idea of controlling the backdrop to move up of down
might just work. It seems like the old movie gag of scenery painted on
a rollerblind and moved behind a stationary car, giving the impression
that it was moving. Might have to experiment with a model. Gee...are
you going to want residuals for this???? I guess I can have my lawyer
call your lawyer and they can do lunch. And of course, fax us with
what they come up with. BYE T.A. MIKE.

Re: TIME IN A BOTTLE

I was recently toying with a magical concept, and thought some of
those here on MAGIC! might enjoy it. The concept is "Time in a
Bottle". If you really could save time, and bottle it, what sort of
effects might be possible?
.
One thing I thought of was to borrow a bill, and clearly tear it into
several pieces, and close the pieces into the left hand. The right
hand takes out a tiny bottle, as you bite the cork off, and pour a
couple of minutes into the close left hand. Then recork the bottle (to
save time...) and open the hand to show the bill restored.
Then close the hand, to look at your watch. Mention that you only
poured out a couple of minutes. Which means, that in about 30 seconds,
you'll be right back where you started, which is with the bill torn up.
Interesting concept, although it is a bit hard on the bill. (Which
is, of course, why you borrowed it in the first place...)
.
With more meaning, perhaps, would be the story of your recent trip to
the race track. Your long shot came in second, and in frustration, you
ripped up your tickets, like so.... Then you discovered the winner
disqualified. Fortunately, you brought some extra time with you, and
you haved a couple of minutes to spare! Sprinkle, sprinkle. Restored!
BUT, only for a minute, so quick like a bunny to the window...

The fifty-third set of MAGIC! messages - #16000 (August 26, 1991)
to #16499 (August 29, 1991) - has been transferred to a downloadable
file. The file is named MAGIC-53.TXT. This means that you can now
go to the file area, download this file, and read the fifty-third
volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to use the
PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a compressed
version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-53.ZIP and is less
than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

Not only will transferring these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

Re: IS MAGIC NEXT?

Apparently, Time Magazine has done more than cover Rush Limbaugh and
show pictures of natives with bones in their noses. The cover story
for August 12th was "A Nation of Finger Pointers" and presented the
growing problem of the U.S. as the "home of the dedicated
neo-Puritans." Of particular interest was the discussion of "corporate
busybodies [who are] ingeniously finding new things to ban - all in the
interest of reducing health care costs."
Among other items, they cited a Pennsylvania company that has barred
its managers from riding motorcycles; a Georgia firm that has warned
its employees to stay away from "life threatening activities" such as
cliff climbing and surfing; and a company in Los Angeles that dismissed
an employee for being overweight.

In the same vein, Joel McNally apparently provided a satirical look at
the growing trend toward banning or regulating music - either because
it is too vulgar or too loud - in his column in the Milwaukee Sentinel.
Titled "Police Put Feet Down On Polka," McNally reported that the
Milwaukee Police Department took a tough anti-polka stand, refusing a
permit for the 12th annual Northwest Polka Festival on the grounds that
the festival attracted "undesirable elements" and that it "adversely
affects the health, safety and welfare" of the community.
McNally used the column to deliver a warning about the Parents Music
Resource Center (PMRC), an organization devoted to censoring the lyrics
of songs its members find offensive.
It was suggested that the anit-polka movement might consider a
"no-polka code," symbolized by a red slach through a graphic of an
accordion, or that "polka" and "no-polka" sections be established in
night clubs.

The key concern I'd like to raise is how vulnerable magic would be to
censorship, as, of course, it has been in the past. Magic could easily
be the target of a wide coallition of fundamentalist (and other)
churches, science, and liberals concerned about their children's views
of the world.

Re: MAGIC NIGHT

Pete,
Re the Carnegie Hall magician, whose name at least
should be obvious to all, I would appreciate it if you
could find some time to post more details on him. I've
always heard that he is a genius and that he is an
excellent card handler, but I've rarely heard any
details. Just what has he created, or what are his
preforming credentials -- even if they are only for
friends? The only writing I have seen by him is the
intro to Vernon's REVELATIONS, which I thought was
excellent. I'm not doubting his credentials, just wish
I knew more so that I could appreciate them. He has
always sort of reminded me of J.D. Salinger, whose fame
seems to grow larger as he does less (for the public).
                            Pretty Darn curious,

Tried to sleep a few hours and then up to Baltimore as Ray Mertz was
doing a lecture there. Saw Howie and Cy Kellar. Visited new Magic
shop which looks like it will be nice. They have a good set up for
lecturers. Ray did a fine lecture. Started with a show like he does
at the bar at Forks, etc and then showed all on his stuff. Was quick
to give credit to others who inspired him and where he got ideas and
moves, etc. Everything he went over was in his notes and since he
uses some gaffs, etc had all these made up for sale. His stuff is
sooooo simple, but good and got quite a few oooohs from the all magus
crowd. Ray is in DC tomorrow night and then to Delaware, CT and home.
.
Glo said to tell you hello. Am going to bed for real in a few minutes
and get some real sleep so I can attack the day tomorrow and the rest
of the week to finish my work before heading west in three weeks for
hanging out and hanging in.
.
Will be feeling like myself in the morning I hope and will holler
at you then. See Leno on the TV and he looks ok. Saw on CNN at the
studio about his mishap and thought about you and hoped Jay was OK
whoich he obviously is.
.
Looking 4ward to visit you soon. Take care. Finally got the big
Stewart James book from Howie and am gonna try to carry it upstairs.

Good decision Stan. As you see from the responses the really good
levitations cost big bucks. The cheap ones, are just that CHEAP. Stay
with the best, and keep in line with what you do. If you only do stag
once in awhile there are a lot of other effects that play much better
.
Remember one thing that Pete said, he mentioned a levitation that
ONLY LASTED about 2 seconds. The problem with most anti-gravity type
effects is that the magi just doesn't defy gravity, HE DESTROYS IT.
No one will ever believe the effect. If you could float things WITH
YOUR MIND or HYPNOTISM or whatever, then WHY WOULD YOU BE WASTING
YOUR TIME AS A MAGICIAN ?? If however, if you merely float something
slightly, then people MAY believe you have a LITTLE power that makes
it happen.

there is a magic club in Florence AND in Venice. Hope you have as good

Re: LIMBAUGH

What do you mean "which was the Aga Levitation" -- you mean "how
does it work?"
.
If so, it is the basic rod thru the back of a curtain with a
gooseneck. It rises (hence "levitation" as opposed to "suspension")
via a mechanism behind the curtain that is cranked up.
.
Variations include the mechanisim belew the floor with the rod
coming up behind magician's leg.
.
This is a rudimentary description. There are dozens of clever
variants.
.
The other "basic" is the ASRAH. This is one where the subject is
covered with cloth, rises and vanishes. Subject drops into a table
and is replaced by a dummy wire form. It is thread operated.
.
The Keller is similar to an aga, in that girl rises in view, but
it is done with a grid of 30-60 wires and involves counterbalances
and sometimes under floor apparatus... it depends on set up.

Good thing you didn't need to go to the Big Apple last night or you

looking for a bit of spare time. Soccer season just started with

Yesterday was "rent string instruments" day. They are gonna try to
learn things like cellos and violas. I never knew fiddles got so

The lecturer had acquired Dr. Jaks Book of Magic and most of the
props and build a lecture around that. He had slides professionally
done of the items and they were the best thing in the lecture. I
came away a bit disappointed as I didn't feel Dr. Jaks as a person
provided much material on which to build a lecture. Had the lecturer
attempted to include methods and/or magic in the lecture, I think he
might have widened the appeal considerably. A book was in the making
when I saw the lecture in 1989, but I don't recall seeing that it was
ever published.

Hotel, restaurant, and other suggestions would be most welcome. We've
chosen a hotel for the seven days we're going to spend in Florence.
But we don't know anything about restaurants, and we MAY be spending a
night or two in other hotels because we're going to be spending four
out of the seven days driving around the region. I rented the biggest
car possible, fearing the worst. But please, tell me what y don't
recommend about driving arod there.

Staying away from the magic club may not be the worst idea in the
world, as this is our honeymoon, and I don't think Jeanne would harken
to to the idea.

By the way, how expensive did you find the day-to-day living in
Florence? Meaning restaurants/entertainment, etc. Actually, is
there any entertainment aside from the museums? Not that you'd NEED
it. Any-who, let me knowour help is greatly appreciated.

Was my explanation clear enough? If you are into books, a good one
to have is the Levitations and Suspensions, published by Mickey
Hades. It is large and red. I think Grant had a book on the subject
as well. New ways to do it are always coming up. Stienmeyer's Pole
Levition (used by Seigfried and Roy) is a new idea. And the killer
that S&R also use... from Andre Kole, with the magi in the Lotus
Position is very unique and original. Roy, of S&R uses this one
floating about 60-feet in the air through a gigantic revolving
hoop that emists bursts of flame!!!! Seem to me S&R do about three
or four different levitations and suspensions.

Re: MAGIC: LONDON/FLORENCE

I'll dig up some information and answer more completely in a few days.
Driving was an adventure all it's own. For some reason, we had no air
conditioning in our car. We picked the car up late at night, and at
the time, it didn't seem like such a big deal. Well, it was a big
deal. Then there is parking, which is about $20 a day, and none of the
insurance companies cover cars rented in Italy. And they go very, very
fast, paying no attention to the lines. It's an adventure, really!
But in Rome? No, I don't think I'd do that.
We didn't get to Rome on this trip, but I've been. There are so many
potential problems with renting a car, as compared to the rail system,
which will certainly get you around. When in Florence, there is plenty
to do in walking distance. You'll hardly ever need the car for
entertainment.
Anyway, this is a honeymoon.

seem to explain the superb taste of French coffee! I have had some
recent communications with some folks on the Big Island and the info.
about the coffee there being "cut" comes from them. By the way, NEVER
ask for Turkish coffee in a Greek resturant!

YES, we've lived near and used to shop at many a Piggly Wiggly store!
Also Wynn-Dixie. I'm going to keep looking for the Bokar now that
you've reminded me of it.

I have tasted, and love, a particular distillation of Jamaican Blue
Mountain coffee - can you name it?

Define for me, if you would, the difference between "leviatations" and

Tabby is, of course, quite right - the British Crabbe line including
George Crabbe, the famous 18th Century poet. But the
Tabster has a great deal more than one line in him.

Re: MY FIRST INVENTION

I think it is somewhat disappointing that the ties between the
International and the local chapters are as light as they are. When
I joined IBM I just assummed that the local chapter would be told and
that I would get an invite to it. Turned out not to be the case. You
know, computers could make the information transfer back and forth a
breeze - we just need to create the climat in which it is desirable.

Re: YOUR REVIEW

T A:

Just read your review in this month's GENII of the Erdnase book.
It is, if I may say so, the first review I've read yet that didn't
sound like a puff piece. The review was remarkable for its candor; for
the effort you made to make the piece a true analysis, rather than a
"liked it or not" review; and for your end comments, which do nicely
let the reader know some history that makes the whole thing seem
cleaner and fair. Nicely done.

You'll have to meet him in order to decide if he needs voice, speech,

Seriously, he is quite pompous about his ability in English, although
in the past couple of weeks he has been refusing to speak Spanish and
I haven't a clue as to why.
By the way, Nathan turned three years old today!

From what I have heard, Bluemle still intends to publish it. I knew
Dr. Jaks in his last year or so on the planet -- and there are a few
mysteries. One thing -- Bluemle does not really believe (or didn't,
though I have told him) that Jaks had THREE different books at various
times, with different effects in them. After Jaks died and Felix
Greenfield got the final book, Felix hired me to spend a day or so
explaining the stuff to him.

Oreos are an excellent cookie for dunking, as are most chocolate chip
cookies, except for the soft kind. I don't think we have any Dunkin'

after all, we have a large police force.

Re: LIMBAUGH

Oddly enough, I just a few minutes ago was looking at the current
Scientific American. which has a piece on the lawsuit; it is so slanted
I'd think it was from the Skeptical Enquirer. The writer seems to
think it is about whether Geller is genuine or not -- and that ain't
it; it's that Randi has made claims about Geller -- that he caused a
scientist to commit suicide, that his stuff is "simple tricks from the
back of cereal boxes" -- that isn't true. Randi's got this notion that
all he has to do is prove Geller is a fake and he will win the suits --
but that isn't necessarily the case (pun intended).

Place near the railroad station is named Phillipe's. In addition to
being a great sandwhich place and one of the oldest on-going resturants
in Los Angeles, they also have a historically significant neon sign of
a type not made any more. Did you know that a runaway TRAIN once went
INTO the place?

Now, have you tried The Pantry?

Generally speaking -- with a suspension the floatee does not move; the
supports are completely or partially taken away and the floatee remains
in position. In a levitation the floatee goes UP from wherever --
couch, table, chair -- and back down -- or in the case of ASRAH, into
da ether.
