Re: LIMBAUGH

In the Paul Osborne Book III there is a really clever idea for a
one man suspension called the "Hade-E-Table Levitation" where the
mechanism is desguised as a large magic table. The performer, of
course, must remain in position once the effect starts, but it
looks like it would be rather good and the "supports" drop out of
the way via a magish controlled mechanism. Designed by Micky Hades
with a little help from Paul Osborne.

I certainly hope I don't offend TOO MANY HERE.... but have you
noticed the "new generation" of Clowns coming out of the Clown
School (Ringling Bros.) ARE NOT FUNNY. There is something strange.
Mebbe it takes too long to develop the real funnyness in circus
clowns and running 'em thru school doesn't do it.

Kinda like buying a trick, reading the instructions and putting it
into a show in a month or two! IT TAKES YEARS TO GET STUFF DOWN.

Re: IS MAGIC NEXT?

It is unbelievable to me how many people out there are "regulators"
and "do gooders" -- where do they make their living? Or are we
supporting them with taxes? Argh...
.
Stuff worked so good in the GOOD OLD DAYS... and it is so screwed
up today, when it should be smoother and easier... we got better
tools. I guess it just goes back to the basic FAMILY AND SCHOOL.
.
A black guy in Washington has come up with a killer theory and it
has been PROVEN. Other cities are jumping in (albiet TOO SLOWLY).
But he figured in the Ghetto cities, Detroit, etc. and almost all
INNER CITY schools the young 3rd to 6th grade black BOYS go to
hell because they do not have fathers at home (the majority) and
they do not have male teachers. They have women running thier lives
and they rebel.
This guy brought in successful black men to assist in the classrooms
and the black youngsters changed 180-degrees. Got interested in
the studies, quit screwing around in class and started to learn
things...
.
They just were great, they wanted to IMPRESS the teacher (the male
one) as opposed to HASSLE the woman!
.
I hope this guy really gets someone BIG TIME to pay attention!

I know some very successful "star" race drivers (Danny Sullivan

.
The "CLIENT" has to have a PR sense as well and must exert some
push once in awhile... it goes two ways... and if you are good
you are good. If you have MEDIOCHRE (which is a new watercolor,
similar to Yellow Ochre) help you will get what you pay for.

Re: LIMBAUGH

Not wanting to be a nasty fellow... but read the words.
Do not read the next line until you think for a moment, OK?
.
Levitation means to float and rise and fall, or just rise and
whatever... vanish, etc.
.
Suspension means to float in a stationary position. Hence, Chair
Suspension... etc. Harbin HAD the best suspension ever... UNTIL
BLANEY came up with his, to which Harbin commented, "This fellow
has done me one better"
.
Levitations are usually performed in a full stage/theater set up
as they require big time hidden devices.
Such as Large Cranking type apparatus either off the stage at
the side with cables and pulleys, or behind a curtain attached to
the Cradle (which the subject lays on/in) or wires/threads going
up to FLIES which raise and lower, etc. Some even require holes
in the stage floor to mechanisms below.
.
One very clever lad I have worked with even has built a huge stage
upon the stage, sort of a three level rising platform. It looks
normal as the scenery etc. make it logical. He has his mechanism
in that... and his AGA moves forward.
.
In the new Thurston book (hurry and buy one at $100, they are going
out of print and will be valuable very soon) the details of his
ASRAH (the form under cloth with thread) is explained very well,
as is the Keller version, girl in view, hung by many wires.
You will see the enormous equipment involved. Byron Walker was
helping to move the crank for a Keller Levitation out of storage
and it took FIVE GUYS to lift it....
.
Christian Fechner (in his $300 book -- now out of print) supplies
full scale blue prints to build his levitation... which is incredible
in that half the gaff is on your own body. You wear a special brace
that goes down your leg and hooks into a bar stool with a killer
mechanism. He levitates himself up off the stool in the most
convincing manner --- I have seen it on TV where the camera goes
fully around him as he floats above the bar stool!
.
Yogano Jr., at our St. Louis IBM convention did a levitation of
a scantily clad lady (his sister) up on a clear plastic platform
(the platform was ungaffed, only used to get the effect upoff
th stage for better effect and visibility).
He has devised an AGA type that he can walk on stage WEARING...
I T I S A K I L L E R B E Y O N D B E L I E F . . . .
.
SO... MONEY NOTWITHSTANDING there are some great things STILL BEING
DEVISED... by people that have great imaginations and the right
resources.

Re: LIMBAUGH

I remember that one. I almost started to make one. The idea could
be good for a funny presentation... you tell the KID that he might
be too heavy for the table. You need to get him onto the table for
say, sawing him in half? And tell him to hold still.
Then the table starts to wobble... you tell him to hold still, if
he breaks this $5,000 table he is in trouble.... You get the saw,
etc. the kid (you cue him) starts to wriggle...
.
AND WHAMMO.... THE TABLE FALLS APARD AND COLLAPSES ON THE FLOOR
BELOW HIM... he appears to be floating in the air....
.
You panic, etc. I think you could stand the saw vertically and
hide the gaff (this is not in the original this is my idea)
And you go around the kid and start to pick up the pieces and put
the table back together.... etc etc.
.
Good effective one man set up...
.
Copperfield should go for this... will send to him....

Re: I'M BACK!

Just a note to let everyone I'm still here.
I got back from a week in Albuquerque last weekend. Found two
nice magic shops. One I've already mentioned was "Fool's
Paradise". The other was called "Pyro's". The owner, Pyro, has a
used book store near the UNM campus and has about two full
bookshelves of used magic books. In the back he has a complete
line of juggling supplies and your typical magic showcase. His
major emphasis is on juggling, but he's finding out that his
magic sales are growing all the time. Nice guy, if you ever get
there, tell him I said "hi".

Other news:
Shigeo Futagawa lectured here last night. He is the author of
"Introduction to Coin Magic", assisted by Arnold Furst. Arnold
accompanied him as a "translator", although he speaks english
quite clearly, some of US don't speak clearly enough for him, so
Arnold translates our "American" English into Japanese.
He will be lecturing at the Magic Castle this sunday the 22nd.
Although his work may not be "earth shattering", his quiet
demeanor and clear presentation of a large variety of material
ranging from ropes to coins and cards, makes a lecture well worth
seeing. He has lecture notes available, and although they are
sketchy, they do at least accurately reflect the lecture
material. And, yes he did allow videotaping.

Interesting note, on the cover of his book, the hands in the photo
belong to Las Vegas' own Daniel Cros.

Pete:
I liked your comments on MacDonald's Aces enough to dust off my
Vernon book and give it another try. It's amazing how much is in
print if we only took the time to READ IT!

David:
Of course I'll be at Lance's show on the 9th. Looking forward to
getting together again. If you're coming to Comdex, I'll be there
too and maybe we CAN have a Magic! get together with whoever else
is there. Michael hasn't mentioned yet if he has a client,
but as it did last year for CES, he just may get a late call.

Michael, are you listening? I'm trying to get into HIDA but
unless I can register at the door for a reasonable Exibits Only
rate, I'll have to wait outside. If you want to say "hi", give me
a call. Maybe we can find time for dinner this time. 435-4748

Bye for now!

Great idea. If TA will mark all the stuff, make notes in the margins
it will be a great collectors item a hundred years from now. Only
prob is that I'll have to live to age 146 and all the men in the

No questione kimo savey... (I spell it my way, never agreed with

I had set up an appointment with Johnny Thompson and Peter Samerjan

etc) and BY PURE LUCK, CHANCE, Samerjan saw Tomsoni on TV the night

I have actually spoken with your cousin. Your assesment of his skills
seems to be relfected in his rates -- he offered to pack us for next to
nothing, but wants a RIDICULOUS amount of money to bump off the
mother-in-I tried all your suggested negotiating strategies -- when I
"flinched," he merely raised his rates even further, having obviously
read the same book. I finally argued that he would be doing good for
humanity at large, and thus the social good of his act should be
reflected in his fee, but, alas, he took this to mean that there were
hidden benefits in the job he hadn't forseen, and raised the price even
more. If you speak to him, kindly tell him he's priced himself out of
the market. Meanwhile, you-know-who still lives and breathes.

Re: INSIDE EDITION

Over the years of fighting with bands on getting good photos (most
get some girl who thinks she is a photog and one of the guys wants to
well, you get the picture) I've learned that some amateurs have a dec
ent eye for composition, it takes a lot more than that. Understanding
lighting, film speed, depth of field, focal length, shutter speed
is still only part. It is the SOUL OF THE PHOTOG that you pay for.
Just like it is the soul of the artist, actor, magician, musician,
ad infinitum that you pay for. It is RESPECT. Most artists do what
they do for the LOVE of it and the money is only an offering to
the gods. Worst thing about what I call talanted amateur photos is
the lack of proper facial lighting and hair lighting. Anyone who want
s to have promo pics done needs to look at work by top guys in fan
magazines, etc and check out the facial lighting and then look over
the portfolio to see. It takes talent to get the full range in a B&W
head shot. Most are dismal gray or washed completely out. But YOU
know this already so what am I raving about. Dunno. Just a raving
lunatic today. Gotta shoot lots of frames too.

I have the three appearances of Fred Kaps on the Sullivan shows. If I
have the orders of the shows correct, 1) Manipulative Act with many
appearing canes throughout the act. At one point he pulls a rabbit
from a cane. At the end he does multiplying candles and finishes
vanishing a lit candelabra.
2) This I think was the same show the Beatles appeared on. Kaps did
the Homing Card and the Long Salt Pour.
3) An older Kaps does some great card manipulation and ends with his
presentation for the Chinese Sticks.

Re: VIDEOS

I took a look at the Carneycopia the other night and MUST get it
soon. Am waiting for The Berg Book from Joe Stevens and a pile of
stuff from Charlie. I always enjoy going through Charlie's lists
and he's always got several things that I want for the library. Have
been getting more and more into research as my interest in building
grows. Rudy came over tonight and since he had turned me on to the
TA Tapes and wanted a Chet O' Destiny I put one together for him
made out of cedar to look like an old treasure chest. It is a lkiller
effect with the emphasis on presentation. We gaffed up an oyster
shell, a shellac covered CRAB and a clam shell for the top part. I
had been wanting to put one together and I owed Rudy a favor since
he was kind enuff to pick up THE FROG at the airport and work for
me at the IBM convention in Baltimore. Rudy has the TA tape but isn't
much of a constructor so I basically helped him by cutting it out
like a KIT and then helping with the hard stuff. I had a couple of
ideas on it myself and this gave me a shot at trying. He was very
happy and now he OWES me again. Jim Lewis is lecturing in DC next
monday and he offered to drive me up for the session which I may do
depending on how caught up I am. Almost midnight here on the right

I can get some pretty good candid shots but the studio lighting is
way past me. I used to take the photos at Gilley's for album liners
etc and shot The Judds first promo shots using reflectors for fills
in their dining room before they got the big deal. My shots were
the first they used while going for the big time. Nothing like the
heavy studio guys can do though. I've just learned over the years
by watching and paying attention seeing what works and what doesn't.

Re: ERDNASE

I enjoyed your review of the Erdnase books in Genii very much. I
have to admit that I also thoroughly enjoyed reading _The Man Who Was
Erdnase_, although I don't think that they provided enough evidence to
prove their point. It did seem at times they were pushing evidence and
making assumptions, sometimes stretching, to prove their point. I
found one discrepancy between the two books (and Darwin pointed a
couple more out to me). In particular with regards to the book that
Jay Marshall showed to Andrews sister-in-law, the Whaley book states
that Marshall said that the book he showed her was thicker than the
book she remembered Andrews working on (page 303). In the Ortiz book,
an appendix contains Martin Gardner's original article in which Gardner
states that Marshall was told by the sister-in-law that the book
Marshall showed her was thinner than the book she remembered (page
261).
Darwin also pointed out to me several other discrepancies between
what Whaley wrote in his book, supposedly based upon various letters,
and what the letters actually said.
Again, as I stated above, I thought the Whaley book was a good read.
I was just a bit disappointed that more direct evidence, actual
letters and such, was not given instead of the author's interpretation
of them.

Re: LENO

I'm not completely sure who thought up Clarabell's seltzer bottle bit.
The writer was Eddie Kean, the original Clarabell, begining in
February, 1948, was Bob Keeshan, and the original seltzer bottle,
according to legend, was brought from the home of the producer, Roger
Muir.
Bob Keeshan was Clarabell until Christmas Eve, 1952. He was the
ringleader of a cast fight for higher salaries and, along with the
other dissidents, was either fired or quit (depends on who you talk
to).
The second Clarabell was Bob Nicholson. He was Clarabell from the end
of 1953 until January of 1955. He did not like the role and asked to
be replaced.
Lew Anderson became Clarabell in 1955 and remained Clarabell until the
final show on Saturady, September 24th, 1960. He was also Clarabell in
a couple of revival attempts in the 1970's as well as in later
Clarabell appearances on talk shows, etc.

Now - for the question - what did Bob Keeshan go on to become?

T A -

I'm not sure that even you know how scary the education system is. I
once served on a faculty comittee to evaluate the merits of a literacy
exam for admission to the DOCTORAL PROGRAM. The debate centered on
whether we should use the 10th grade norms or the 7th grade norms. The
problem was that, based on the students already IN the program, we
would be losing too many candidates if we used the 10th grade
standards, but we were scared stiff that there would be a problem if
the press ever found out that we were using the 7th grade ones. I
forget which we finally adopted.

There a lot of influences on education. I west that much blame can be
put into the group called "administrators" that allow inferior teaching
to be used. Are you aware of the video tape that was show on a Sunday
night of teachers in a North Milwauukee high school. After the tape
was shown, then the administrators took action. I have horror stories
of teachers allowed to stay in the classroom because the administrator
refused to rock the boat. Although I am still effective i am
considering taking early retirement from a district going downhill
because of a court case that only owrries about racial makeup in the
classroom and not about the needs of the kids. My top two school
administrators always seem worried if you might get recognition that
might make an individual look good. ...My wife just says it is time to

While I understand your point regarding the transfer of information
between the headquarters and the local chapters, I don't think the
"light" ties are necessarily all bad. The independence of the locals
allows considerable leaway in how the locals run themselves. For
instance, membership in the International body does NOT guarantee one
membership in a local chapter. This permits quite a range of variety
in the make up and type of local chapters from city to city.

close to publication in 1989 as he was having folks fill out forms

It is unbelievable to me how many people out there are "regulators"

This guy brought in successful black men to assist in the classrooms

things...

(the platform was ungaffed, only used to get the effect up off
the stage for better effect and visibility).

Re: IS MAGIC NEXT?

The process of exercising social and legal control over divergence,
rather than over criminal behavior, is always scary and, throughout
history, has always been dangerous to magic and magicians. In my
original post on this topic I mentioned the Parents Music Resource
Center and the censorship of music. There are a great many groups that
magic offends - I think it was Scott Cram (I could be wrong) who
mentioned that his local SAM chapter was turned away from the use of a
church related hall when the church realized that they had extended an
invitation to a magic group. Although magic is the parent of science,
it is often viewed as inimical to science which is somewhat of a state
religion. I think it would be very easy for a coalition of neo-Puritan
groups to view magic as counterproductive.

I think I've seen the changing card that you are describing - uses a

Animation can be done on an overhead projector by using a motor driven
polarizer in the light path. Actually, there are all sorts of effects
that can be done with either a gaffed or ungaffed overhead projector.

I don't quite see it the way you expressed it, Tab. I do NOT view
either magic or fantasy as "counterproductive." Au contraire, they are
a balancing force of society. What scares me is that there are a lot
of people out there who do view them as "counterproductive."

You yourself triggered some of my thoughts a long time ago when you
posted a message about MAGIC! eventually having to have its own
satellite or its existing between the cracks of the global
communications system.

My real point is that we have to be vigilant and that we have to fight
this sort of social control BEFORE it gets to magic. Once you allow
the juggernaut of "what's good for me is good for you, so I must
protect you from yourself" to get rolling, it is too late to stop it.

Re: ROTH REVIEW

A good "natural" way to do the rice bowls. (I am not kidding here,
just thought it time to put in some mo' mojo... yo...)
.
Use two flower pots about 6 or 8 inches across the mouth. Now, this
is from my NOTEBOOK circa 1950 (yes Tabby... this is where lots of
the stuff for my next book will come from).
.
OK, 2 flowerpots. Now instead of a plastic gaff over one pot, just
stuff a rubber chicken (or other production item of your choice)
into the pot.
.
Have that one mouth down on table, other mouth up.
.
I used breakfast cereal instead of rice. You chat about (I forget
the patter I used then) the grain shortages in where ever, Russia
India... make it timeley... and that the great magicians not only
grow mysterious plants in flower pots... but can grow crops without
planting... etc. etc.
.
You fill one bowl with the cereal. You can do lines bout FIBER, like
I eat so much fibre I evacuate (cleaned that up) Throw Rugs... argh.
.
Put the other pot (used bowl twolines up sorry) on top, do the
usual pick up turn over move, etc. like rice bowls... and when
you lift off the chickenless pot it appears the cereal has doubled
in quantity... wheeeeeeeeee.....
.
Put 'em together again, and instead of getting liquid (as in ususal
rice bowls) you produce the rubber chicken...
.
At the time, the line "A chicken in every pot" was coooool....
.
So there you are fun seekers... wonderful magic right here on
MAGIC!... Oh, you can use a wand that changes to flowers for a
kicker if you wish at the end... I don't want to give it all out
you need to think on the presentation. Any item can be used to
fill the pot and be produced. I just like Rubber Chickens.

Re: MY FIRST INVENTION

OK, I'll post another USABLE magic item. Rope Drop.
Following the conclusion of the Conway Rope trick (a great
version of the Professor's Nightmare -- marketed by Ken Brooke, and
I think now in print in Pat Conway's book, "The Pat Way to Con")
where a gaffed rope is used -- at the finish I threw the rope out
into the audience. This blew the minds of 999 in attendance. The
one guy that caught the rope figured it out... but the other 999
were destroyed.
Matter of fact, within a minute of the end of the show, two
very knowledgabe guys, Sam Schwartz, being one of them) rushed into
my dressing room (the part of the hallway where a nail was hung so
I could hang my coat?) and wanted to know how I did the 'ROPE
SWITCH' he had a bet with Del Cartier that I switched the rope.
.
So, take this principle and use it wisely.
.
I once tossed an egg bag into the audience during a show at the
SAM Convention in Chicago... got it back and said, "Hey somone
has ripped the seam... well, I will try to do the trick anyway!"

I think any coalition of neo-puritans would be viewed upon by the
mainstream public as being a bit too extreme- out on the fringe and not
to be taken too seriously. I don't think we have to worry about any
small group of radicals gnashing their teeth and frothing at the mouth
trying to have us banned as heretics or whatever. Mainstream America
is pretty much destined to follow the path of "Middle of the Road" for
better or worse. I don't think all of the neo-puritans put together is
enough to have any effect on us whatsoever.
However.... I will keep an eye on them.

Hi David! This trip to HIDA is very tight, schedule-wise. I can
probably arrange for you to get a pass in, but I won't be working the
floor this time. I'll be arriving Tuesday afternoon, and I'll start in
the Suite at 7:00, strolling around. Then a stand up piece for 30
minutes, closing with another hour of strolling arnd. Then I'm out the
very next morning at 8:00 a.m. for Washington, D.C., for the AFPA.
It'll be with the same company - Enzymatics. Only in Washington, D.C.
I'll be working the floor from 9-5 Thursday, and 9-4 Friday, and my
flight leaves at 6:00 on Friday.
I don't like coming and going so quickly, but it couldn't be helped.
I'm currently involved in filming a video for the public, called
ICEBREAKERS - Magical Surprises with Everyday Objects.
We filmed today, with several on location scenes, including a trip to
David Luther's office! You'll see fellow MAGIC! subscriber, David
Luther in a cameo performance on the ICEBREAKERS video!
.
Last night we filmed some moments with the SAM club, tomorrow we go to
an archery range, then to the Alamo, and other on location footage,
ending up with the in studio footage Sunday and Monday.
.
Give me a call Monday morning, and I'll see if I can get you a pass!

I think Ringling Bros' noticed the declining
public opinion of clowns. They now have as
their featured act David Larrabee who is a
clown. Apparently he was brought in with the
amount of money they usually reserve for large

how the strategy is working or if he will be

lot of 30's and 40's radio programs and some of 'em are raunchier than
would be thought. On the other hand, I think that sexual innuendo (or
downright sexual acts) are a cover for weak entertainment. If you
can't deliver good, you can always deliver sex. Same with violence.

I haven't seen the new Madonna stuff yet, but she is one of my
favorites. I think she is a brilliant lady whose work will long
outlast her critics. Her reply to the pornography comments about her

Is there a Ring Leader's Handbook? Or are there any regional sessions
for training the leaders? A lot of other types of organizations do
that - they have a statewide or regionwide or whatever Leadership
Training program each year for all the new chapter officers.
I really don't know how the IBM system works, but another thought is
that some organizations have point systems and awards for chapters.
The chapters are usually divided by size, etc. so that the "bug guys"
with all the resources aren't killing the little chapters. Then they
get points for having different types of meetings, different events,
things like points for members attending lectures, etc. It provides
both guidance and incentive for chapters to be active.

I only knew Jaks during the last couple years of his life and he did
not strike me as being particularly unhappy. One might suppose that
the phrasing was Bluemle's way of telling us that Jaks was gay (hardly
a secret) -- but he didn't seem uneasy with it, or depressed. I do not
recall if Bluemle ever actually met Jaks.

Reminds me of years ago Al Mann worked the Castle Parlour, did his
Lexicon Phenom dictionary test. He kept having trouble with it because
several times during the week he picked people who DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO
LOOK UP WORDS IN A DICTIONARY -- they did not understand how a
dictionary is arranged.

And at the other end of the social spectrum, there are those who view
a great deal of magic as being sexist -- partly because people
sometimes take things too seriously...and partly because a lot of magic
IS sexist.

Re: BAD VIBES

A comment to the SysyOp, Big Dave:
One thing that is slightly confusing about this bbs system is it's use
of threads...other bbs systems, such as PCBoard, allow the
configuration of specific conferences. In this way, special areas could
be set-up for the users based on their specific interests, and might
look something like this:
 Conf.1 - New Users
 Conf.2 - Magic Castle
 Conf.3 - Biro's Corner
Conf.4 - Maven's Den (enter at own risk) just kidding
Conf.5 - Catalog clone trick discussion
 Conf.6 - Close-up finger flickers
 Conf.7 - Stage
 Conf.8 - Comedy / Stand-Up
 etc etc etc
As you can see, people, esp. new folks with little computer or any
other experience, could go to the conference of their choice, rather
than wade thru the serious volume of messages that appear on here.
Also, their feelings are not as likely to get hurt if they field
their questions in the appropriate places....

  just my .02 worth...

Yeah, I don't blame you and _Son Of_ is a better title anyway. I'd
forgotten about that one in all the excitement. Make it a BIG book.
I finally found a copy of Greater Magic I could afford. I had one as
a kid and let it slip away in a lending thing 20 years or so back
to a drummer in some band somewhere. Loaned it to him and was to get
it back a few months later when our bands were to do another show
together only when the show came around he wasn't in the other group
anymore and lost track. Charlie had a "well read copy" of the 1st ed
on his list and I feel lucky to have gotten another copy for less tha
n a hundred bucks.
