Re: LENO
I used to work regularly at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa
Beach... which IS Leno's favorite place to work and try out new
stuff. I opened for him dozens of times and being a car guy, as he
is... we had much in common and used to hang out in the dressing
room and talk cars NOT SHOW BIZ.
When I was working at the Grand Prix in Long Beach I used to tell
the bosses "You got to get Jay Leno in the Celebrity race" they did
not know who he was!!!!!!!! Finally they said, OK. And he did a
great bit on the Tonight Show about it and then during the event
the press went crazy over him and he got more publicity for the
event than any movie star, etc. had ever done before. They invited
him back a second time (which almost never happens).
He had a great time doing it. He has a great car and motorcycle
collection and has moved it into a new building in Burbank.
Additionally, same method, I got to Know Letterman. He goes to
a lot of the Indy Car races now. I got him a ride with Phil Hill
around the track once and David went bananas. But he did not want
to drive in the Celbrity race (I think his eyesight is not so good).
The main thing about Leno is that HE IS STILL THE SAME AS HE
WAS BEFORE HITTING THE BIG TIME.
Leno still tests his Tonight show stuff at Hermosa, usually on
Sunday or Monday nights. Go see the show if you live in So. Calif.

Re: MY FIRST INVENTION
Sheets told me of the improved handling at Balto during comedy klub.
Mebbe Rudy has it? Altho it may not have been sold, just being done
by Bob himself. Becky Blaney does a version.
.
I love the item and want to learn it.
.
Also the Pavel Travelling Knot is killer... however the original
Paul Curry version (first seen by Doug Henning) blew me away.
.
But you need two assistants holding the rope with giant reels up
their sleeves!
.
Siegfried is doing a version you will see on Oct. 10 -- that I got
to see again. It fooled the crap outa me... I have been told it
was developed by Harary.
.
However... the Pavel one is the most practical yet, ONE MAN.
.
However... the Biro method is cool too. Will put in print in book.
I did it 5 feet away from Johnny Thompson and fooled the wee wee
out of him.
.
It is done with a rope about six feet long and you don't need to
tie any end to a chair or nothing. And using my BLUFF idea you
toss it into audience.
.
They way I nailed Tomsoni was I finished and threw the rope to him
--but threw it so HE WOULD MISS IT.... it fell the the floor, he
did not bother to pick it up.... just stood there stunned... thinkin
that I COULD toss it for examination.
.
HAH... THAT IS THE REAL FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: PENETRATION
GARBO was the name of the DeCourcy version. It might have been the
name of the canary he used. Not sure.
.
John Gaughan would also know. I don't know who got the prop. Ken
Brooke had it (I shoud have bought it and the MARTIN BUTTERFLY
PRODUCTION that Ken had for sale but was too dumb to realize the
future potential) and showed it to me but I didn't recall the
modus.
.
It -- and the vanishing Birdcage -- were the highlights of DeCourcy
act. Do you have a pen pal in the U.K. that would know?
.
If you want let me know and maybe cn get the information from Pat
page (I owe him a letter anyway).

What a great BLUFF tossing the rope where he missed it. Good idea
throwing it to somebody who can't bend over. Yeah, the sliding knot
that DH did on TV just left me with my mouth hanging open. That and
his version of Go Bump in the Nicht made me a fan forever. Don't know
if Rudy has new, improved version as he bought it from Al's Magic
Shop a while back. Would like to see the new ver as the old one is
a killer. I thought Becky did it a little too fast for the penetratio
n to sink in. Rudy did it nice and slow and I swear you can see the
rope actually coming through the midsection. I was floored and when
I found out the method I took off my cap and stood there silent for
a moment in reverence to the SHEETMAN. I thought of an "improvement"
and wonder if this is what Bob came up with using gimmiks on both
pieces instead of just the main one.

Re: IS MAGIC NEXT?
Yep - not a big surprise in a country where less that half the adults
have ever read a complete book. We did a program for a large
corporation once and the intended audience were supposedly all high
school and college graduates. In the program we used the phrase
"Notice the indented line." In pilot testing we found that few knew
what "indented" was (in all fairness, it turned out that many of the
group had graduated, but not from U.S. schools - lots of folks from
countries where English was not the primary language) and we had to
change the term to "set in."
I guess that the key is to know the audience and to realize what
abilities (or lack thereof) one is likely to encounter (er, "to come
upon").

Re: IS MAGIC NEXT?
I frankly have difficulty in accepting the notion that magic is sexist.
I think that there have been some corruptions that are sexist - I am
frequently dismayed, to some extent, by the focus on sexual
sadomasochism for example, but those are individual acts, not magic in
general.
And, of course, some groups have been sexist.
But I do not conceive of magic itself as being inherently sexist.
Certainly, historically, it has been a shared craft. And there are a
growing number of brilliant women performers out there.

Actually, we are in the process of setting up conference sections and
I think you will find that our approach to it is better than most,
since you will not have to switch from conf. to conf. once you have
selected the ones you want.
The system has always had the capability but since MAGIC! is private,
it relied on the sysop to enroll folks in conferences. The new system
will let you turn conferences (sections) on and off whenever you wish.
It is in Beta test right now and should be up very soon.
I really appreciate your suggestions. We will probably start with 3 or
4 areas and see how well people like it.

I think that when the new sectioning system arrives, Tab, that you will
be pleased with the way that it works. I think that it will prove
superior to the approach taken by other systems. Both power users and
those with less skill should be equally well served. A LOT will depend
on how well the MAGIC! members use the new capability - if people
insist on messing up the sections then it will be significantly less
desirable than if they help. Only time will tell if the planning and
effort that has gone into this will be successful.

At one time, the Holiday Inn at the Calloway's was the largest in the
World, am pretty certain it ain't no mo'.
Once flew from Auburn, Al. to Atlanta on Cherokee Airlines. Plane was
a Cessna 150. We dropped over Pine Mt. and circled real low. I asked
the pilot what we were doing and he said, "Well, they don't have a
radio, so if there are passengers to pick up, they spread a sheet out
on the runway. But I don't see any sheet, so I guess we go on to
Atlanta." When we got to ATL, the entire set of landing directions
were something like "Cherokee 172, do you see United flight 42 at 2
o'clock?" Answer: "Yes." Reply: "Follow him." They then did the
same bit on an American flight behind us - "follow Cherokee 172." You
got any idea how big a 747 REALLY is when it is comin' up your tail at
a couple hundred miles an hour and you are in a Cessna? Big.

The real question is - What do you think Seigfried and Roy have to do
with the tape that Gary asked me for? Considering that he was
suggestion a tape of the two MAGIC! events - Oct. 9th with Lance and
Oct. 6th with MAX, I think it would be more appropriate to get
permission from Max than it would be to try to explain to Max that
"Seigfried and Roy said it was OK."
I was not planning on dragging video equipment to Vegas, but if you
found out in advance that Lance wanted a tape, I'd be more than happy
to do it for him. On a casual basis like this, it would have to be a
one camera documentary shoot, but would be VERY high quality for its
type. Lemme know if he wants. Also, would we be hit by the room's

Appoint a "section monitor." Save yourself from the ignomious task of
having to admonish people every time they stray from the section fold.
Better yet, form a TEAM of monitors, who switch off days. Even better,
slowly expand the size of the pool so EVERYONE's a monitor. Yes, I
know even the best of us make mistakes, so develop a disciplinary
system. Punishment could be minutes, hours, or even days of being
locked off the sysyem. Or, even better, minutes, hours, or days of
ONLY being able to read Biro's messages. I guarantee you'll have no
section encroachers if you carefully enforce the rules, and use this
punishment.

David--
Just checked by 1982 edition of Webster's NewWorld Dictionary. As of
that date, "demagog" was still listed as an alternate spelling.
As far as I understand it, the Oxford English Dictionary is a
dictionary of just that -- English. And that the American version of
the language, with syntax and spellings all its own, it better
represented by our own tomes. Question -- does the Oxford make an
attempt to deal with American English? And if so, is there a notable
snobbery that biases them?

Actually, in the case of the "do you want to see a grater trick?" it is
probably fortunate that you have forgotten the actual wording!
By the way, are you familiar with the story of the weary traveler who
took refuge in a remote monestary during a storm? They served him fish
and chips and the meal was incredibly good. So afterwards he went into
the kitchen to compliment the cooks. He walked up to the first brother
that he saw and said, "Are you the fish friar?" And the fellow said,
"No, I'm the chip monk."
Now you know why I started a MAGIC system, NOT a comedy one, and why
I'd like to see this one remain a MAGIC one.

I agree - Subtle seems to be a lost art along with "we leave it to your
imagination" along with imagination. Maybe that's the problem with a
lot of magic - it relies on imagination as well as the notion that you
can remember the premise by the time the conclusion occurs.

OK, you wrote "Actually, Lance might like a tape." That's why I
suggested video. Otherwise, I have no intentions of lugging the gear.
Far as I know, there is only one event in Vegas - The MAGIC! excursion
to Lance's late show on October 9th.
But there is also a MAGIC! field trip to see a rare American appearance
of Max Maven at the Ice House in Pasadena on October 6th.
And, if anyone is planning to attend either of these events and hasn't
left me a message about it yet - they should DO IT so that we will know
how many people to expect at each event. Both of these should be
terrific!

Re: IS MAGIC NEXT?
Hmmm... Let me guess - Ogilvy's reasearch (that 50% of the readers did
not know what "obsolete" meant) was done on Scientific American.
The head of marketing for one of the "schools" that markets heavily on
daytime television once told me that they lose over 50% of the calls to
the 800 number because the folks either dial just the last seven
digits, as if it was a local number, or they never can get the idea of
dialing the "1" at the beginning. That is one reason that most
television commercials with 800 numbers use "DIAL ONE-800." etc.
I think that one of the things that magi (and many entertainers in
general) fail to realize is the actual location of the median person in
our society. They assume that most folks are pretty much like
themselves. Pete has the right idea when he says that if you really
want to hit the average you should watch a lot of MTV. Of course,
there is no necessity to entertain the masses - one can make a pretty
nice living doing private parties in Beverly Hills.

Re: TAOM CONVENTION
Tabby...I suspect you have a lot of advice for your sister. My
suggestion would be to have a few puzzles that your sister could either
give or show how they work. I have had a lot ossuccess in breaking
down barriers with them in my classroom. A couple might be;
a) the horseshoe puzzle where two pony shoes are joined on ends with
chains and then have a ring over the joining chains. The idea is
get the ring off. It is also impossible to break.
b) There is the $1.50 trick sold in magic shops where three colored
cardboard cards are shown and the performercan determine which
has been turned over by the participant while the operators head
was turned.
c) or even the stick with a loop of string that is put through a
persons button hole and the idea is to remove the string and stick
without breaking either. The loop of string will not slide over theend
of the stick.
d) maybe the penny safe where a penny is put into a wooden box and
the trick is to get the penny out.
If my desptions are weak I will expand. My thought is that your
sister could show each how it is done at the end of a session. It
seems as if the last few years have brought my attention to kids who
are having severe problems. In the last two years i know of five kids
that were getting help and two teachers who didn't finish the year.

At FISM I bought Michael Weber's book Lifesavers. I was very

demonstrates perfect.
I have been working with the effect, but what ever kind of
rubberband I use, they all have the same problem that you see
you have double-looped a rubberband with the intention to
show it as one loop. I discussed the problem with some of my
friends and they all have the same problem.
I remember Michael told us he now uses rubberbands he got from
Japan, and I must admit the illusion is great!!
I wonder if any of the other MAGIC! readers have played with the
effect and were able to obtain the perfect rubberband.

Re: CRUISES AND TUXEDOS
No experience with advertised Tuxes.... I would go to a good
reliable LOCAL high-quality mens wear store. Have a tux fitted to
your body... mail order won't cut it. I will go look at the label
on mine (be right back). It is CHAPS by Ralph Lauren, 100-percent
wool, I think (it has the Woolmark label).
You got to be in style and magic supply house likely has old
stock. Look in the current men's magazines for accessories. Be
subtle. The red tie and cumberbund is obsolete. A vest is much
classier than a cumberbund.
It is better (for social events) to be conservative. On stage
you got to think about what you want to say with your look.
.
Last night an act asked me for advice (after a competition) The
Act had a trash can and worked with Kites on stage. Wearing a Tux.
I told him right off. YOU NEED A PERIOD COSTUME, LIKE A KID WITH
A CAP ON AND KNICKERS.... you are PLAYING WITH KITES. Nobody does
that in a Tux. His wife and pal were listening and they flipped out
over the advice and said they would help to pick the clothing..
what a great idea, etc. It never dawned on him to DRESS for the
act... he thought you should always wear a tux. When he thought
about it for a minute he really understood.

Re: OMC ANNUAL SPAGHETTI FEE
Ee;20229
Annual Spaghetti Feed AND Inter-Club Competition.
24 or 25 years ago, when I was here before, we started an annual
show for the local area clubs to each send a rep, have a contest
show and social, featuring spaghetti. Well, the club has been
going strong, the Oakland Magic Circle, is independant and used
to be honored with many professional members.
This year's affair was held in a City building within the
Oakland Zoo grounds. Nice place, but no curtain for the stage !
The Salvation Army provided (for a sizeable donation) the chow.
I went back for big seconds!
Magic Dealer Steve Dawson, MAGIC TOUCH, Milpitas, Calif., was
MC and he donated $100 cash for the winner, Phil Temple added a
"hot off the presses" copy of his new DANTE book and the winner
also got a trophy, plus name engraved on the permanent one at the
OMC HQ in Oakland.
First up was a young lad (and probably his two sisters) doing
more illusions than would fit in MY garage... and would fit on
the stage... He somehow was able to dance around 'em, producing one
little girl (they were all in Blue Sequined matching outfits!!!!)
from a Doll House and the other from a Stack of Boxes. Oh, his
name is Chris Minchillo and is from SAM 112, Concord, Calif.
He had pretty good music and closed with the Hindu Basket.
.
A FIRST HERE ON MAGIC! I WILL GIVE MY SCORES: He got 64 points.
.
Note: You have to give the FIRST act a medium score. If you go
too high you have trouble going higher, etc. OK? 60-is what I
usually start at (out of 100) so I thought he was better than just
OK but not a winner (unless all the rest were terrible)
.
Next we saw James George from IBM 192, Sacramento, Calif. A young
act with large table and candelabra (he was hard to see behind
the candelabra a few times). Mod dress, opened with a floating
bottle (hard to see he was behind the stuff on his table) but the
audience thought it fairly good. Did liquid into paper "Absorbing
News" they call it... Tore and restoed the paper (Tabloid size)(
ala Gene Anderson. First time I ever saw Anderson method done this
size. Hmmmm. Did floating lit candle, but why turn all the lights
out? Could hardly see anything. ARgh... He closed with a near
killer effect! The shadow box. We all know it... but his handling
was great. The figure appeared inside and pushed out on the
elasticised sides, etc. and WHEN HE OPENED THE FRONT THERE WAS NO
ONE THERE. A KILLER FOR SPEED AND SURPRISE. The audience really
got nailed and big applause. He should have quit. He fooled 'em.
Then he goes back and produces the guy out of the box. He should
have closed with the vanish. Anyway, I gave him 77 points.
.
Following was Jimmy Kwong in great Chinese wardrobe. Did the usual
feather flower productions (which I normally hate) but his style
and PERFORMING ABILITY made it FUN! And he had a ton of them! (OK,
he makes 'em himself). He then did the paper in mouth with FIRE.
He blew tons of smoke and SPARKS out of his mouth. The best I have
ever seen. Then the continuous paper from mouth with a kid in front
row joining in the pulling out... it never stopped. I have never
seen this done better. He was having a ball, and the way he and
the kid interacted won the audience for the rest of his act.
He did a strange Chinese effect where he put rice in a saucepan
and it "cooked" itself. Heat from the pan provided funny bits with
a spectator trying to hold it. Never seen this effect before.
He closed with blooming bush and giant flagstaff silks produc-
tions. He was very strong with the audience reaction. They loved
what he did. I scored Jimmy at 86 (he's from SAM 10, Hayward, Calif.
.
Devon Simonovich, a very young lad from IBM 216, San Jose, Calif.,
followed. He did small manipulative work with golf balls, etc.,
and included a very well done Zombie (I liked his style) in which
he passed a hoop over it... a clever handling. He was very smooth,
had great hands and a terrific style. In his early teens, I told
him later to keep at it he had incredible stage presence and a lot
of potential. He got a 77 from me.
.
Phil Ackerly, SAM 94, Palo Alto, Calif., was next. Ackerly won the
close up earlier this year at the PCAM in Concord. He had a nice
theme, using American Express cards of varying sizes. Did a funny
6 card repeat using Travellers Cheques, which turned to Dollars
ala the Pat Page (Kaps used same idea) effect. Had bill grow to
giant size and took out giant wallet (he said it took a whole cow
to make the wallet) to put the money in. I thought he would go
farther with that, but switched to a boring mental number trick
that didn't relate... and I think he dropped with the audience
because of it. He got an 82 on my score sheet.
.
The last act was Tim Hart, from the Oakland Magic Circle. I had
seen the act before and it was essentially the same. He opens with
Kite Productions, doing nice stuff with his assistant involved more
as a co-performer than a slave -- he also had some streamer type
kites, then did a Linking Kite Frame routine (a hair too long),
and then pattered about Ben Franklin, produced a Key, but didn't
do anything with it... His closer was the floating kite. A box
kite... but his failure to really check and understand the lights
killed it. The thread showed like a neon tube. They had side
lights and killed the fronts -- which is 180-degrees wrong. So
his act died right then and there. He was pretty upset later,
saying the crew missed his instructions. Too bad. Tough kind of
an act to do in that type of venue. I still gave him 80 points.
.
So the winner: Jimmy Kwong, Phil Ackerly and Tim Hart. (Same order
I had them in, and interestingly, one of the judges was not into
magic at all. A casting director from the TV industry. She was
the one "non mage" in the jury... and her scores and mine were
almost identical right down the line!)
The evening was quite fun, the place was packed, the Salvation
Army volunteers did a great job with the food and took 236 tickets
in.

Tab... the trick, at the table you mention has another effect,
Thayer's Handkerchief frame. Do you know it?

You borrow a white handkerchief, tack it to an EMPTY PICTURE FRAME.
You put the frame into a paper bag, that it JUST fits into.
You then stab knives, etc. thru it... you could reach your arm
thru and back, etc.

Yay, close but no cigar. Great concept. I told him to throw away
the tux. A guy on stage playing with kites in a tux sux. He said,
what a wonderful idea (oh, I told him to wear knickers, a cap on
his head sideways... dress in COSTUME, like a turn of the century
KID playing with kites would look). His pal and wife said they
agreed and will start the search for the clothes.
.
The closing effect made no sense. A box kite flying around like the
Okito Floating Ball.... but then I came up with this....
.
I told him that it was missing something... what he needed to do
was to have the kite ON A STRING. Kite is on floor. He has a thick
white (so it can be seen good) string on the kite. He tugs on the
string -- it is indoors and there is NO WIND -- and suddenly the
kite rises up.... NO WIND.... and it flies.... HE MUST HOLD ONTO
A STRING, COMING DOWN TO HIM.... this makes it LOGICAL.... he
was blown away and couldn't believe he did not think of it....
.
Also the string will distract the eye and the mind. IT will no
longer look like the floating ball.
.
He also needs to find better thread. He did not know the real work,
and also did not know about dying it in spurts to break up the
line look.

Ee;20261
On page 199, of Goldston's Locked "More Exclusive Magical Secrets"
is the details and description of a small rabbit through a mirror.
It sounds exactly like Garbo, the Howard De Courcy effect.
The mirror is round, and stands in a frame, so your hands are free.
There is a small shelf on each side. The Rabbit (in the Garbo
version it was a small bird, a canary) is in a little box. You
put it on the shelf on one side, revolve the mirror around to
show the other side and there is another little shelf. You place
an empty (it is) box on that shelf. Say the Magic Words "Nesral
Eneri" (Irene Larsen backwards) and the bunny, or bird, or Gherbil?
is on the other side in the box. The mojo operator also sticks his
can in one box and it comes out the other side....
The affus gaffus is the mirror is round and it rotates so the
hole is hidden by the little shelf.
The secret is that the mirror reflection will stay still as
the mirror is rotated.

Here is a thought. You show a picture frame with glass in it and
the picture is of yourself (whoever is doing the trick). Tell 'em
that not only can I do magic, but my picture can too.
.
So you stick the frame and picture into an envelope. Reach your
hand through the paper and do whatever (you could have one of the
chips that makes sound of glass breaking -- remember the hammer
Sylvester used in Balto? -- timed to the action.) Then when you
bring out the pic, it and glass in one piece?
.
Don't know how to do it... but someone will figger it out...

Might ditch the glass and pic ala slate flap? Switch stuff? Mhhh.

Much to ponder.

I've got the spool of it on the work bench, but besides that small
spindle I sent you I haven't had time to mess with it. I figure if
you could wash it in a bath of gun blueing or maybe better "browning"
and then stretch it out and hitting it with a fine mist alternately
of flat black out of an airbrush you might get it close for
a theater hookup. Idealy you could spray the wire to fit the ceiling
of each venue. This is certainly something Fu Manchu and Edmond
Spreer would of done. They didn't mind working all day to get the
night's show ready. They were really into being magicians. Have you
read _Illusion Show_? Lighting gotta be just right on above wire
work though. I really like that kite flying idea. That's pretty
neat, and so logical. It makes perfect sense. Man, he oughta do
Franklin's key bit and have lightnihg strike the kite with the
resultant glow first lighting the key and then the performer just
before he takes his bows. That would be a lot of fun. I just got one

used looked mighty good to me. 400 is too steep right now. Have
200 in books coming in from Charlie next week. Will have to wait.
Am sure another set will turn up on a used list. Would prob make a
good investment to hold five sets for ten years or so though. Wish I
had the loose cash to buy some up, the Thurston book too will be wort
h a couple hundred or more in five years. maybe more in mint conditio
n. Like you said, I rich in friends right? Who needs all the books
in the world, but the ready reference is nice and will get them all s
ooner or later. Gloria brings my dinner on a tray in here now, but at
least she knows where I am these days. I used the damn funkenring
twice and it broke already. How do you move the flint down. Is it
that little screw?

Re: SHIGEO FUTAGAWA'S LECTURE
(I tried to upload this after the lecture yesterday but I
couldn't make it work. Thanks for the help Dr. Lichtman!)
.
Just got back from a lecture by Shigeo Futagwa at the Magic
Castle. Luminaries included John Carney, Daryl, our Sysop,
TA Waters, Ron Bieber and Jerry Burton but since our members
haven't posted a report yet I will put in my several cents
worth.
I've enjoyed his book "Introduction to Coin Magic" for some
years now. In fact I used some of the routines in it for my
Castle audition and it served me well. It's a good addition
to a coin library and he was selling it for less now than I
paid for it a few years back.
Mr. Futagawa's lecture was interesting and on a scale of one
to ten I would give it a 6 and a half. He was soft spoken in
his heavily accented English but his demonstrations were easy
and clear enough to understand without too much verbage
necessary. Actually there was too much verbage but not by
Mr. Futagawa. Mr. Arnold Furst was trying to help interpret
the explanations for everyone but he was more of an
interrupting annoyance.
He began with a rope routine making knots appear and
disappear. One nice part of the routine which fooled
everyone was when he had a straight rope held between his
hands in front of him, he threw it over his head still
holding on to the ends like a jump rope and when he brought
it back in view by stepping through it, it then had a knot
tied in it. So it was like a slow motion jump rope move.
Nice misdirection. He also did his version of professors
nightmare where the rope seems to end up in one long piece
with the knots sliding off. Nicely done. He explained each
of his tricks after he performed them.
He next turned to cards, faro shuffling them and without
squaring them all the way he flicked the aces out of the
deck. He didn't explain that move but either everyone knew
it or those that didn't know didn't care to. I think it is
a nice flourish for laymen. He took the four aces, mixed
them and then found them by spelling them out.
BORING!.
He showed us a nice move that he devised after reading
"Imagication". The effect is a chosen card is replaced in
the deck, the deck is dropped in the case but the chosen card
doesn't drop, it juts out at a 45 degree angle from the case.
He showed a couple of uses for a shiner he was selling to
mentally reveal a selction or to have a spectator tell you to
stop you any time as you deal and that card is the selection.
He showed a self working 24 card set up that allows you to
spell out a card mentally noted by the spectator as you fan
the deck. Something for everyone today.
He had a nice silver coin production from a dollar bill.
Just when I thought he was explaining how he made one coin
appear he made two. When he was explaining how he made two
appear he made four! I think he surprised most everyone with
that. Another coin trick was a simple coin transposition
when one is apparently securely wrapped up in paper. An old
principal with a new use.
A surprising "Ooh and Aah" came at the end of this next one.
He made a pyramid with ten coins laid flat on the table. 4
then 3 then 2 then 1 in the shape of a pyramid. He had Daryl
up to help and covered the rows from view one at a time with
a folder and had Daryl say how many he could see at each
stage. When he had them all covered he said he would try to
turn the pyramid around.
After some mental exertion he uncovered the coins and indeed,
the pyramid was pointed the other way! I liked that.
Mental spoon bending was next and the spoon was tossed out
into the audience for inspection. That was an $8 trick and I
think he sold more than a few of them.
Showed us a self working card trick prediction that was one
of if not THE most longwinded, drawn-out, boring card tricks
I have yet to suffer through. And I like card tricks!
Lastly he showed us a real cute and clever item. He says
people ask him how he does his sleight of hand. (He has his
hands cupped in front of him). He slowly opens his hand and
a miniature hand pops into view and moves a bit. He then
vanishes the miniature hand as suddenly as it appeared.
Jerry Burton showed me a great handling for it after the show
where the hand grabs a coin off of his hand and vanishes with
it like those old piggy banks that would grab a coin and
vanish with it. That was a $6 item and was very popular.
That's about it from my perspective. A good but not great
show. Bordering on a dealer demo but he did impart some
clever ideas. I made a new friend who will be signing on to
Magic! so all in all it was a very worthwhile afternoon.

I think you know what you're doing, Stan. You have exhibited a lot
of sticktoitiveness with magic. Just make sure when you buy your tux
that you don't gain or loose a bunch of weight (if I remember right,
you couldn't stand to LOOSE much, but still) and don't wear a red
cumberbund. Now, a rich purple, I wonder what Pete would say about
that? Sounds right for the tabman, though it would clash with the
red lining in my jacket. Just do what makes YOU feel the best. I
think most of know on the gut level just what works. A reputable
clothier would be the best choice, I think. I did buy a blazer at
a place called Sam's Suits the last time I was in Vegas but the
cab driver didn't speak much English and it was the best we could do.
Got black so it would look good with my pink golf cap. Just ramblin,

You don't need much. I just put in less than what stuck to my
fingertip - I mean just touch fingertip to it and what sticks is
MORE THAN ENUF. Put it on the wool. Set it off and scared the weeee

Looks like I only need a couple of packets of Flash Wool and the
smallest amount of Sparkle they got. If you don't go there, no big

Stan, it is not a Funkeknring... I use a fingertip flashpot (just

tiny tiny tiny amount of sparkle additive.

So, big race indoors at Houston Astrodome... the Sports Illustrated

Too much... next morning in practice he is flying. He flies right

You really meant all the PEOPLE in the room stood up, right?
We used to call Lee Tai King, Lee Tai King. But later found out
we were wrong and it was Tai King Lee. Actually we called him
Charlie Chan.
.
He was a great guy, real chinese artist, did stuff we never had
seen, the famed Popcorn trick (secret went with him to his grave).
.
Jimmy Kwong (Sat. Night) did a killer with rice. Put a cup of Rice
in a saucepan. Added water (?) and put a lid on it. OK, it was
a gaffed lid, but the pan looked like a real kitchen sauce pan with
a handle andthe lid was not thick.
.
He had a kid hold in his hands, one hand on handle, the other hand
below, flat under the pan against bottom.
.
Suddenly the bottom got real hot. He tried another kid and the kid
pulled his hand away saying it was too hot.
.
When he lifted the lid, there was STEAMING COOKED RICE. He spooned
some out.
.
VERY EFFECTIVE. He says he will teach me the popcorn trick. I will
go to see him for that. It was my favorite trick years ago.

Thanks for your report, Stan. I concur very closely with your comments
and you said it better than I could have. I think that the pyramid bit
was worth the trip - I like it because it can be done impromptu (after
practice, of course) with spectator's coins and with any handy piece of
paper. I tried it with dimes and an origami square and it worked very
nicely. It DOES need some kind of padding though - not advisable on an
uncovered table. One thought - place a couple of napkins down first
and you have a really weird effect when the pyramid turns and the
napkins haven't moved!

Re: SHORTENED MSG
Hope you got "didn't get the shaft" as a pun on the broken shaft in
your ring.
Once, when I was a faculty member, the building was being remodeled and
at a faculty meeting, several of the professors wanted to know why an
elevator for the handicapped wasn't in the plans. The head of
buildings explained that an old building like ours wouldn't accomodate
a new elevator (we had a very small one) without a new shaft and that
that was expensive and would take money from the other plans. Several
felt that the new elevator was more important than a new office for the
Dean, etc. and were quite vocal about it. Finally, the building's guy
walked off the stage in disgust. As he was walking through the
auditorium, the faculty Chairman, a normally very reserved fellow,
said, "Do I take it that it is the view of this faculty that if they
are to get the shaft, it be a new one?"

Re: OMC ANNUAL SPAGHETTI FEE
You are a true Prince. Prince Tabman? No, sounds too much like King
Ralph (maybe one of the worst pictures made this century).
.
Picture was so bad I had to sit (on airplane) with my head turned
90-degrees and handkerchief stuffed into little hole where the
toy speaker plugs into the armrest. Echargh... and Goodman is a
highschool pal of Jim Nagels.... argh ;+)

Jolly Good you ol "Rotter" -- I like the Brit language... used to
be fairly good at it. Need to go back and recharge my word file.

Re: SHORTENED MSG
If you think the Jester used Funkenrings you might be wrong. I
think he had some kind of really industrial strength items, like
the spark makers they use to start welding torches... maybe even
more as his sparks seemed to LAST LONGER. Maybe little electric
motors that kept the flint wheels turnin'... you know, Keep the
Wheels Turnin'... sounds like a good song title.

Re: DR. JAKS
And an even Greater Photo of a young mage, known as the Great
Carsoni (AKA JOHNNY CARSON)... Leno was brilliant last night with
Mike Wallace, the first guest.
.
Joe used to have a check from Johnny Carson framed on the wall of
his shop. Orsen Welles was a big customer of Berg.
.
I think it was Joe's shop the famed "DORNY" (or was it Crandall?)
Flash paper incedent took place. You know it? Here is brief.
.
Joe was "making" some flash paper. You dip it in something, then
let it lay out to dry. He had about 100 sheets of the flash paper
laying out on the counter tops of his place. Dorny (or was it
Crandall?) came in. Joe was in the back room. Dorny's (or was it
Crandall's) cigar was in full fire... you guessed it... ash hit
the paper and WHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
In a FLASH (pun intended) A L L T H E F L A S H P A P E R
burned and vanished ....
.
Joe came in from the back room and said, "Where the hell is all
my flash paper?"
.
Dorny (or was it Crandall) wryly said, "What flash paper, I didnt'
see no flash paper?"

Yes, I got the pun about the shaft but since it was so obvious I dint
(dint is didn't in Ricky Ricardo Cuban English) want to comment.
I was afraid to comment and think there should be a section just for
puns. I guess I left myself open for that one though, though it is
really a gearalated jimmyshammy - the one with the confabrolated
brass gears, you know that one. I think it was assembled in E. Ger.

I haven't seen King Ralph but you can't blame Goodman for making
hay while the sun shines. I think it's great. A big bear of a guy
who is raking in all these millions just on his awesome looks and
tremendous talent. You gotta admit, he's been good in Roseanne though
and carried the show for a while. I've gotten burnt out on it though
and only watch probrams about the greenhouse effect on PBS.

Yeah, they are a must have if you don't have the orig which go for
three times the price, but are readily available right now. Everybody
has six or seven of them on their lists right. How many copies of
each were printed. have any idea???

Re: SHORTENED MSG
We were on the road opening for Conway Twitty and he had/has this guy
named "Pork Chop" playing drums for him. Well we got to doing stuff
to the other band as Gilley was starting to have hits so we put smoke
pots around his drums and set them off during "Hello Darlin" conway's
opening number. He never missed a lick. probably thought it was smoik
from a barbecue. Was pretty funny anyway. We wired Gilley's piano
seat once so it would shock him and that was a MAJOR RIOT and he neve
r got it. He would be starting in some love ballad and JOLT. We
finally couldna't stand it and fell out rolling around on the floor.
He's a great guy and had a super sense of humor, but he always got
even. One moring in Larado, I found my Charlie One Horse hat laying
smashed with the crown punched out of it laying in the hall outside
my motel room door. Then he gave me 200 bucks to get a new one (it co
st 150) and had a big laugh.

Re: CRUISES AND TUXEDOS
My music was well received on the BBC, in fact I probably got more
airplay in the Pacific NW and England there anywhere else combined.
Oh, yeah. Radio Sudsped (Austria) played my records til the grooves
wore out and fme living in the SE USA. Everyplace was too far to go
to do gigs though I did go to Great Brit for a tour and had a wonder
ful time. I wanted to move there for the longest time but finally got
the singing thing out of my system. Actually, the climate is much too
cold for me. Was in Scotland for part of a winter and it is COLD.

I guess my left hand is heaviest. I think I was supposed to have
been left handed and they whipped me til I did it with my right.
My left hand can do all sorts of stuff that my right can't do but
I'm conditioned to hit golf and baseball with right hand. Writing,
etc. I sure don't know now.

Re: SHORTENED MSG
I don't think it was a Funkenring either, never did, but wanted to
see some SPARKS to see if I could do it. Your car bomb idea got the
wheels turning and I wanted to do something similar for closeup with
a little rosewood box that pops open and spews sparks. I like the
Funkenring principal because there is less danger of flash powder,
etc buring the spectator.

Re: DR. JAKS
That's a funny story. That musta been about ten dollars worth of
flash paper in that era. Was probably Sen Crandall as I never saw
a picture of him without a cigar.
