Er, I thought it was resonably clear -- the shop presumably won't let
you in unless you are referred by another customer. Supposed to be
good deals and very good tuxes. By the way, it is _Dr._ Lichtman. And
don't try the excuse that you were suggesting I had referred my
brother, he's Dr. too. Whole family. You are considered as having no
right to speak at family gatherings without the degree.

Re: SHORTENED MSG

Why no cape? Looks great with his tux and red tie. Seriously - he is
going to perform in clothes similar to those his peers will be wearing,
nothin' fancy. Just thinkin' about this clothes thing and I think
there are two schools of thought - one is to dress within a reasonable
expectation of your audience (which could include the dressiest they
would feel comfortable in) - message: I'm one of you. Other is to
dress above them (like with tux) - message could be: I'm different,
more powerful than you, but care has to be taken as it could backfire
and say "I think I'm _better_ than you." Both approaches, done right,
are probably major controlling factors in how mage is perceived.

Re: SHIGEO FUTAGAWA'S LECTURE

I think the size table you've got is great for micro magic or would
also be the equiv of an Ammar sized table for Nathan. Am working on
a great new idea for a tabman table and will maybe spread a couple
of them around to get some feedback. I would like to make one for
myself though sometime. Since Ray Mertz didn't use his in Baltimore
the other night maybe he wouldn't mind returning it. It was real
nice with Cherry frame. I'm really getting fond of cherry. A guy in
Colorado makes beautiful CRAPS tables for a Casino supply in Vegas
and they are cherrywood and green wool. Sure look good together.
Puts you in the mood for cards or dice. You know!!!

easier to read in that format than the Annuals... Most of the
Annuals are in bad shape. Goldston used very cheap production and
some kind of Ostrich (I heard Turkey) skin to bind the locked books.
Just found out you need to oil 'em. Byron has the special oil and

That "stumble force" of yours is one of the greatest bits I've ever

Some disposables have flint wheel and shaft anyway. You just have to
break off the cover and the plastic. Might fit Tab's ring. Also, some
disposables now have piezo-electric ignition. It should outlast the
lighter by a long time and could be used. Can't say it will work in
Kikuchi's stuff or anything, but worth investigating.

Re: MAGIC-54

The fifty-fourth set of MAGIC! messages - #16500 (August 29, 1991)
to #16999 (September 1, 1991) - has been transferred to a
downloadable file. The file is named MAGIC-54.TXT. This means that
you can now go to the file area, download this file, and read the
fifty-fourth volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to
use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-54.ZIP and
is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

Not only will transferring these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

Beginning some months before The Man Who Was Erdnase (TMWWE) came
out, the THAUMATURGIST has been used as a vehicle to stage
attacks on those who Jeff Busby perceived as somehow at odds with
what can at this point only be described as a mission -- the
publication of TMWWE. First it was John Booth, who was accused
of all sorts of thievery and unethical scholarly actions, and
now, in THAUMATURGIST #19, it is T A Waters.
.
T A Waters used the forum of GENII to criticize TMWWE. Jeff
Busby uses the forum of the THAUMATURGIST to attack T A
personally. There seems to me to be something basically unfair
about Mr. Busby using his house organ to attack a reviewer of a
book that Mr. Busby co-wrote and published. A quite vicious,
personal attack, I might add. In addition to having a frothing-
at-the-mouth quality, it is frequently below the belt and argued
in an intellectually dishonest manner.
.
The two and a half pages (yes, 2 and a half pages) devoted to the
topic begins with glowing reviews about TMWWE. Then it shifts
gears, and attacks T A's objectivity by examining the scrape T A
alluded to in his Genii review -- that T A was angered when Bart
Whaley's review of T A's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MAGIC AND MAGICIANS was
a pan. The shocking thing about this was NOT that T A's
objectivity was colored; rather that Busby assigned Whaley to
review T A's book when, a year later, Busby would publish
Whaley's ENCYCLOPEDIC DICTIONARY OF MAGIC -- a direct competitor!

It's the equivalent of having the movie studios publish reviews
of each other's product!
.
Then, on a wild tangent, Busby discusses a disagreement over
credit on the "KLUTZ BOOK OF MAGIC." He claims T A was unhappy
that he did not receive on-the-cover credit. But the real point
of the discussion seems to be that Busby DID. This is what is
known in the trade as a "pissing contest," and has little to do
with the issue at hand.
.
Then Busby tries to defend himself against the thrust of T A's
critique -- that there is still no real PROOF that Andrews was
Erdnase. Busby's defense rests on the notion that, back then,
there was no forensic science to speak of. It's almost needless
to say that this kind of logic does not hold water. It would be
like someone "proving" that ghosts existed in the 1600's by
pointing out there were no real cameras to record them.
.
The rest of the piece degenerates into bickering over scholarly
points -- things no one will be able to judge one way or the
other from the information provided. Then Darwin Ortiz's book is
attacked -- an innocent bystander savaged because T A's review of
that book WASN'T a pan.
.
"What's the deal here?" you may ask. Why is Jeff's hair up? And
the answer's here -- on page five of THAUMATURGIST #19, where
Busby has people noting that "...the conclusion that Andrews was
Erdnase [is] indisputable." This is why Busby has taken any
threat to his books so to heart. Andrews-as-Erdnase has become a
religion to him. An unquestionable truth. A given in life.
Questioning minds become atheists or, worse, heretics.
.
Perhaps Busby is so rigorously defending this "truth" because he
wants it to be remembered as his long-standing contribution to
the field. But that's no excuse for the personal nature of the
attacks he's meted out. The book's scholarship may or may not be
suspect, I don't know. Knowledge of the book is not necessary to
look upon Busby's actions with a raised eyebrow. Busby should
realize that with all this rabid name-calling, the casualty in
the end is the book itself -- it begins to look suspect -- smell
just a little bad. It makes you wonder why the book NEEDS so
vigorous a defense. If Busby protesting too much?
.
In the end, all this will pass. The truth will most probably
never be known, no one will ever be proved right or wrong. What
will remain, however, is the attempts at impugning reputations,
the mud-slinging, the bad taste in people's mouths from all the
below-the-belt hits thrown here.
.
I for one wish Mr. Busby would take all the pages he has devoted
to this issue in the past year or so, and use them for what the
Thaumaturgist did best -- telling us about the latest in books
and effects.
.
Picture Busby at a convention in the near future. Giving what
was billed as a lecture, but has turned out to be a loud, red-
eyed attack on the latest person to question his book. Then a
little boy waddles up to him. The crowd falls silent. Busby
stops his rants to look down at the child. The little boy says,
"More tricks, please."

Re: VANITY FAIR

No -- Vanity Fair is a vanish of a lady on a platform in front of a
mirror, when concealed by a screen. It uses the same principle as the
later lady-through-glass as used by Mark Wilson, but she goes away --
what happens is that the mirror slides up, creating an opening, and she
goes across a plan to backstage. Since the audience sees mirror all
around the little platform with the screen, she seems effectively
isolated; still a good principle.

Re: THAUMATURGIST #19

Once upon a time (January, 1991) Jeff Busby Magic, Inc. published a
book entitled "The Man Who Was Erdnase" by Bart Whaley with Martin
Gardner and Jeff Busby.

A little while later (September, 1991), Mr. T. A. Waters reviewed the
book in his column in Genii magazine. Mr. Busby did not seem pleased
with this review and made his views of it known in the
October-December, 1991 issue of the Thaumaturgist.

Mr. Waters replies -- on MAGIC! -- the file is titled THAUMAT.TXT
and may be found in the MAGIC! Files Area. You will certainly want to
read it.

finally said "Do you have a secret to your life?" (Leo is known to do
stuff like that) - "Oh, yes!" said the old man, "Always keep your mind

Not that I agree with Busby... but if the KID wants "More Tricks

Sure it is too bad Jeff is so bitter. I grew up with him. He is
a brilliant guy. But he is bitter. And it has hurt him. He gets so
upset about things he has heart attacks. Another great and close
friend of mine was so upset over people stealing his material (Ken
Brooke) that he died!
You have to take the "reviewer's history and record" into
account when you read what they say.
Busby can write brilliant stuff. But he has gone too far, sure,
it is too bad. I wish he hadn't been so vindictive.
And remember... Thaumaturgist "IS A HOUSE ORGAN" he owns it, he
can write ANYTHING HE WANTS.... just read it with "him" in mind.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

I read TA's rebuttle to the attack in Thaumaturgist this morning
from Files and it is suggested reading for anyone
interested in the controversy. My favorite part of TMWWE was the
history of gaming book publshing and the rundown on the various
editions of _The Expert_ which I have most of, except for the
valuable edition which Erdnase put out himself. I don't know if
Andrews was Erdnase, either. I doubt if anyone does anymore. Jeff
has done some great stuff and I am happy with my association with
him as now more people than ever have the tables I make and his
dealings with me have been fair. I can say the same thing about
TA Waters, as he has been straight up with me too. I imagine the
recurrant stirrings by Jeff may be in part to stimulate sales and
move the remaining books. It is a must have book if you are leaning
this way as is the Ortiz book in question, which, incidently, I
find extremely valuable and insightful. I agree with TA's assertion
that Jeff misplaced the emphasis in the key sentence concerning
Darwin Ortiz promise to write more on the Andrews/Erdnase question
in the future and found that surprising in the least. I wasn't
going to read the piece in Thaumaturgist until Evan Katz brought
the issue up so venomously and I wonder where he fits into the pictur
e. Evan's first message to me so many moons ago was an inquiry into
the Busby/Kaufman feud which I refused to fuel. His comment was
"Drat!" I am happy to say that I have all the books in question and
have read them, some parts more thoroughly than others, and have
found them all to be very useful. I find that while TMWWE and the
Ortiz book have remained unused since first reading that the Waters'
Encyclopedia has been an often referred to reference as well as
the Whaley reference works. In the Whaley, _Who's Who_ T.A. Waters
is listed in a complementary fashion unless I'm missing some inside
dig.

I realize Busby can write whatever he wants in the THAUMATURGIST, but
that doesn't make it RIGHT. Or nice. And I don't ANY of us should
condone it in any way at all. Whether it be by outright agreement or
silence.

If I used the power I had to reach the public to attack someone
personally, how would you feel about me? Think about it. Being prone
to heart attacks is no excuse.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

Tabby--

I didn't bring up the issue venemously. Mr. Busby has the honors for
injecting venom into the equation. My message was a defense of T A,
and a criticism of Busby for attacking someone personally. How you
load responsibility on me for this is confusing to me. Isn't defending
people who are attacked supposed to be a GOOD thing to do?

In reference to my "Drat" comment, I was seeking information about a
much publicized feud that I know nothing about, and was frustrated by
not being able to satisfy my curiosity. What does this have to do with
the issue?

Just because you have had fair dealings with Busby does not mean you
have an obligation to extend that to other actions. If you condone
Busby's attack on T A, then please come out a say you don't think it's
that bad. But to call my message "venemous" seems to me to be shifting
the issue away from its source, and, because I have a personal
relationship with you, is hurtful to me as well.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

In rereading your message I realize I did not respond to your comment
that you "didn't know where I fit in here."

It is not exactly a private matter. Both GENII and the THAUMATURGIST
are public documents, and this matter is CLEARLY being waged in public.

I fit in because I believe to sit back while I think a wrong is being
done is... wrong. Standing up for injustice is generally accepted as
a socially desireable thing to do. If you don't think Jeff's attacks
are injust, then that is another issue, one which is different than the
things you touch on in your message.

Once again, I am confused by your message. Of all the parties
involved, I seem a strange one to attack.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

Evan,
I don't feel that I am attacking you or anybody. I don't think TA's
review of TMWWE was an attack on Jeff, though he (Jeff) seems to
have taken it this way. You seem to get some pleasure out of
controversy, I however don't. If I have hurt you I appologize. Some-
times your sense of humor is taken wrong too, I agree. In your essay
on Jeff's attack on TA, you referenced him (Busby) as "Red eyed"
and implied his attacks at magic conventions which he rarely attends.
Also, Pete's reference to "heart attacks" wasn't an excuse for Jeff,
but something that his internalized anger must of caused. TA can
obviously take care of himself, and he has ably done so in his
rebuttle in the files area. I'm proud of TA for not sinking to name
calling or other less than achedemic statements and sticking to the
facts. I hold him (TA) in the highest of esteem as it must be
obvious to all here on line.
.
In reference to my "defense" of Jeff, I hope you don't want me to
lie and say that he treated me unfairly, which he hasn't. I try to
always deal with people on the highest of levels, though you have
caused me to "slip" more than once and get my "red-neck" up, but
I don't think that is what is happening now. I recall some cruel
comments you have made which later you said that you were "kidding"
though I (and others) didn't know it at the time. Now, I always look
for the "Katz humor" in every thing you write.
.
I have no reason to attack you. Please don't think that I am. My
comments were true. I WAS NOT going to read Jeff's barage in
Thaumaturgist until you got so hot about it. I really didn't want
to get those vibes going as I try to keep things positive. I stand
for the rights of all concerned (you included) to voice their
individual opinions in this matter. MAGIC! is a "public" forum also
and by that token I chose to comment to my friend, Pete. I am an
upfront person as are you and would say nothing behind your back that
I wooden say to your face. TA opened my mind and I appreciate it.
I also appreciate the work that went into the book in question and
am a satisfied reader. Do you have TMWWE? Have you read it?

six booklet set called Mental Trix by Bernard Zufell. When was it
published and is it still available? He is already familiar with

same line that specifically apply to magic that he should look

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

T-man:

Of course I don't want you to say that Busby has been unfair to you
when he hasn't. I think the fact that he as been fair to you is mildly
irrelevant to the discussion.

You are correct in pinning a love of controversy on me. Guilty as
charged. This is not the only motive involved, however -- defending a
member of our community against a bizarre and embarrasing attack was
the overriding motive. You might say that that was the engine, and my
love of controversy was the drive train -- enabled me to spit it all
out.

There really isn't much "Katz humor" in my message, except for the last
paragraph. I genuinely tried to break Busby's attack down into
sections and analyze it.

No, I have NOT read TMWWE, and that is why I have not thrown my two
cents in on the T A vs Busby issues. My message is in response to an
offensive personal attack, not my feelinbout the book.

I guess what bothered me was your applying the word venemous to me, and
not the Busby. At least not in your original message. The subtext to
me was that you were cticizing my message, and not Busby's.

And, perhaps it was not so bad that I encouraged you to read Jeff's
comments in the THAUMATURGIST. I wrote the message so that people
WOULD look twice (or once) at it.

And please remember this -- were Jeff to ever attack you in a public
forum in a personal and what I saw as unjustified manner, I would be
the first to leap vigorously to your defense.

TA Waters was a raving, lunatic which is how I perceived your satire
brought forward toward the end of your disertation. To me, the fact
that you have read or not read TMWWE is relevant since knowledge of

perceived both the review and the retort. I do not take it personally
that since I liked the book that I have been attacked by TA's review.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

Tabby--

My satire of Jeff Busby as a "raving lunatic" does not have to be
validated by him attacking T A as a raving lunatic when Jeff... well,
has acted like a raving lunatic. At least that's one way of excusing
his offensive behavior. To think that he launches personal attacks
from a perfectly sane position would make it worse, not better.

I completely disagree that knowledge of TMWWE would have affected my
perception of T A's review as well as Busby's attack. This is becauser
I see his personal attack as completely trancending all discussion of
the book. He "broke the rules," so to speak.

And to call Jeff Busby's reply "slanted" is like calling the Grand
Canyon "another dried up river bed" -- it's a little oversbutle.

In the end, my position can be summed up thusly: Busby was mean. I
was, and am, standing up for a member of our BBS who has something mean
done to him. I really see it as that simple.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

TABOOOO... I have read Busby's commentary (it is his house organ
and he can say what he wants) and it is too bad he devotes so much
time to hammer on T A and his review. I always figure if you get a
bad review, get on with the next job and forget it. You yourself
know if you were right or wrong. He would have been better off not
responding so strongly. I wish he would use LARGER TYPE... this is
one thing NO OTHER REVIEWER has complained about.
.
However, if one knows Busby you know how to take his stuff. With a
grain of salt. It is just his way.
.
T A did a very thoughtful review in Genii. I don't have it (or my
glasses to re-read Busby... but feel both are due the right to
their opinions. Nobody is required to agree with them.
.
But, like you, I got the book and I liked it very much. It was
great reading. It could be argued that I should be upset if it is
not ACCURATE HISTORY. But, hey we aren't talking Nuclear Energy or
Brain Surgery here. Just theory of who was ERDNASE.
.
Wait til they read my book and research on the Man Who Invented the
Linking Rings!
.
Let's hope "Coathangar" Wilson (no folks you don't know him) and
"Bunky" Boothe can stir up as much as Busby/T A and anybody else
can help us with TO DO ONE THING... SELL GODDAM BOOKS AND HELP ME
PAY OFF THE BACK TAXES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Puns are one of the highest art forms - perhaps the only truly mature

For those who will be staying overnight in LV after the Lance Burton
show, The Aladdin has the best rate I've been able to scope out. It is
$12.50 per person double occupancy. This works out to $27.50 for a room
for 1 or 2 people including tax. There is also a 2 for the price of 1
admission to "Alakazam" with Kirby Van Burch for hotel guests. I made
my reservation today. I called the Hacienda about reserving show
tickets and was told to call back later. Apparently reservations are
not taken until a week before the show date.

it Peter's and/or The Magic Castle's to divulge....not mine...or anyone
elses for that matter.
As far as my seeing the information "in public"...no I haven't. There
are a lot of "scoop" items in the NATIONAL ENQUIRER that are not
previously printed "in public," but that does not make the ENQUIRER a
meritorious publication.

Since I set the type as I write it (not like Jarrett who set
the type by hand in metal, printed some pages, took the type apart

Re: VIDEOS

You've never been out to see it? OK . . .

o Drive North on Route 14 toward Palmdale
o Stop at the View Area just before Palmdale
o Look at the bronze plaque and use it to find the San Andreas
o Notice where it cuts across the road directly in front of you
o Drive through the "cut" and look across the road at the rock
o Notice that the rock contains a formation that looks like /\/
as if the rock had been twisted into a whorl -
That is THE San Andreas Fault
o Now go through and look at the houses up the side on your right

It is really a geologically interesting trip - not very far and the
part of I-5 from Sylmar and then 14 to Palmdale represents some of the
most tortured geology in North America. You will also see a very nice
side road to Vasquez Rocks - worth exploring and hauntingly familiar
(they are among the most photographed rocks in the World - perhaps THE
most photographed - used in lots of Westerns and lots of commercials,
they are probably Hollywood's favorite rocks).

I dunno about the Zufall stuff -- but there is a trade paperback called
SHORTCUT MEMORY by Victor Werner that uh, had versions of a lot of it,
and some more stuff too. Also, Tom Harris had a series in Genii
starting in January of 1959 which was specifically aimed at the magical
applications of mnemonics. Important point: do NOT use the Nikola
system -- because the phonetic attributions are different from just
about all the rest of mnemonic literature. Lorayne's stuff for the
public is, of course, excellent, as is the Roth Memory Course and the
Bruno Furst stuff.
The Zufall stuff, if you can find it, is very well thought out; I
recommend it.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

Subject closed? I'd just like to make the point that my
message/diatribe/essay has nothing to do with whether or not I judge T
A as capable of standing up for himself. I was offended, and felt the
need to speak. Why do so many people find this so disturbing? If you
know Busby and know how to take him with a grain of salt, fine. But he
didn't check that out with the 6,000 (his figure) people he mailed this
to. There's an "old boy" element to this whole thing. Let's not
attack Jeff because he's one of us. Let the boys (Busby and T A) work
it out amongst themselves. In my opinion, and that's all this has ever
been about, that's wrong, old-fashioned, party-line thinking. I
wouldn't stand by for a mugging. And mailing a two and a half page
personal attack to six thousand people is pretty darn close to that.

Switch the roles. You witness a bad performance I give, report on it
on MAGIC!, and I proceed to mail out a PERSONAL attack to six thousand
people, telling them all sorts of stuff about you that has only to do
tangentially with the issue. Wouldn't you think that was wrong?
All I can say is that I would expect my friends to do more than sit
passively by and let me "slug it out" with my stronger attacker. I'm
not condemming anyone (aside from Busby) for anything they have and
haven't done in this thing. Just making my motives clear and clean.
I see a wrong, sometimes it's so egregious I have to shout. What can
I say. It's my problem.

What I don't understand is how his attack can be just dismissed with

that approving the attack as being justifiable. I don't know Busby

This is my first message on this board, although I have been reading
you messages pretty frequently. What a great board! You seem to have
assembled here experts on all forms of the magician's art. Which is
why I am writing this message. I have been VERY frustrated in trying
to learn to deal seconds convincingly. There are some things that a
book does not teach satisfactorily, and this seems to be one of them.
I have read four different styles of seconds, but have yet to make any
of them work for me. I don't mind practising, but I want to make sure
I'm practising correctly. Does anyone know of a video that I can buy
that would teach dealing seconds. Or would anyone be willing to teach
me in person to do this. I live out in the far reaches of Riverside,
but would be more than happy to drive to wherever, and compensate a
teacher. (Gosh I'm long winded.)
Thank you very much!

It's quite easy to work out the results of your "alternating who goes
first" approach. If the spectator chooses first the magician has a 66%
edge. If the magician must choose first there's a 50% chance the 66%
edge will be maintained, but a 50% chance that the losing 33% situation
will result. The latter will, over time, cancel itself out, so if the
game is played with this alternating approach the magician will still
have the edge.

With all respect to Fred, but in fairness to Mike, it should be pointed
out that the first to come up with the idea of doing a version of the
Victor Eleven Card Trick with dollar bills was Gene Gordon, who
marketed "Dizzy Dollars" a few decades back; you can find it in the
Gordon book that Ginn published. Fred's handling was more
sophisticated, but simply not the first.
Also, Fred _did_ teach his version in at least one lecture in the

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

For one thing, in addition to the printing costs, you would have
blown $1,740.00 in postage doing something that I don't give a hoot
about.
.
I am not aiming any crap at you. I just don't think the stuff
Busby says is that big a deal. If you have read him (and guys
like him) in the past you know he gets carried away and goes all
out. And to me, it is a "so what?" Read that "TO ME" .... what any
one else does is fine if it makes them happy. I have had too much
stress around me and seen it not only ruin lives, but cause death
to ones very dear to me.
.
So I don't take any of the written stuff to heart. In one ear and
out the other.
.
So, for ME THAT IS FINE... and when I said SUBJECT CLOSED (or
something like that) I meant "I (me) don't care no more" I want to
get on to the next topic.
.
Have a great trip in Italy. Keep your valuables in different safe
places. I once put my camera, money, passport, plane tickets all in
one bag and some guy stole the bag! It was the first time EVER that
I put all in one bag. Broke my own rule.

Re: DEALING SECONDS

Howdy Kevin. Glad all the crap on here of late hasn't scared you
off! How long you been working on 2nd dealing? That is the key.
It takes a heckuva long time... and I know you don't want to do it
WRONG mechanically.
Without checking, I would guess that Darwin Ortiz, in the
"Annotated Erdnase" would have good advice.
On line here you might query Gary Plants. He is one of the best.
Probably the best way would be to get into the Magic Castle a
few times and get acquainted with the guys there and WORK YOUR WAY
INTO THEIR CONFIDENCE.
Nobody will just show a stranger that does not show much effort
in being A) Cool, and B) Very interested, and C) Skilled a little,
any of the REAL STUFF. You have to pay your dues. And it does take
time.
.
Another question. (Don't get upset)... WHY DO YOU NEED TO DO A 2ND?
.
This is a serious question. There could be good substitutes, and
the need might lead us to the best method.
.
Good example: Charlie Miller way to do the Dunberry Delusion
required a 2nd deal. There are other ways to do the trick with
maybe even better effect WITHOUT the 2nd deal.
.,
If it is for a GAMBLING DEMONSTRATION... (my opinion) It is better
to 'TIP OFF TO THE PUBLIC' a lousy version. Not an indetectable one.
That's if for today! Thanks for joinin' in.

The best view is on the drive North - the fault is a bit more obscure,

On the Alaska Highway we spotted another section of it, clearly

There is also a nice view of a fault cut (I don't think it is part of

road that heads south out of the park.

Re: DEALING SECONDS

Kevin -

I'm not sure how old you are (can't see you on my screen) so first let
me mention that you have to be at least 21 to become a member of the
Castle. There is a Junior Membership that begins at 14 and if you are
between 14 and 21 you are in an extremely favorable position, because
I think that if you become a member of Jr. Castle your dues are reduced
for the rest of your life!

The Magic Castle is located at 7001 Franklin Avenue in Hollywood. It
is on the hill above Mann's Chinese Theater - north of it by a few
blocks.

How does one get in? Again, remember that you have to be over 21
except on Sunday afternoons and some special days. You have to wear a
jacket and tie and you have to either be a member or be a guest of a
memeber. As a guest, you can be accompanied by a member, or you can be
given a guest card to go (one time per card) by yourself.

There are two categories of membership: Associate and Regular.
Associates are folks with an interest in magic who buy their way in -
a front end membership charge plus high annual dues. Regular members
are folks who have passed an audition. Auditions are generally held on
one Monday a month.

Re: VIDEOS

I didn't know about the inside gag of the word TYPEWRITER all being on
one line. I do not believe that the creator of the QWERTY and the
alphabetical order keyboard were one and the same person.

Early on, there were many typewriter manufacturers and differences in
keyboards were deliberately designed as a method for selling
typewriters by having individuals trained in the use of a particular
keyboard. Eventually the QWERTY won and became the most popular,
although, as you pointed out, it was very likely designed to slow down
the typists.

The Dvorak keyboard was the invention of a man who spent practically
his entire life on keyboard design. It is far and away the fastest
layout, as well as the one that provides the least strain for the
typist. I believe that most of the World's record holders for fast
typing have used Dvorak keyboards.

If your Homo Magus had left any DNA (mitochronial, of course) around
