NO! I'm not sure if John Dvorak (the current computer industry writer)
is related to the keyboard Dvorak and don't know if either is related
to Anton Dvorak. But with the IBM convention being in SLC, we have a
great opportunity to find out!

Re: LAS VEGAS ROOMS

Dave,
Count me in for a second show on the 9th, just have to have enough
notice to convince
my wife to let me go . To keep an "All Magic" theme, I'd vote for
Melinda's show rather
than a Strip show with just a feature spot. If Melinda is the choice,
let me know how
many to expect and I'll try to call Hardeen and get a table reserved
for us. Or maybe if
Geno is listening: Geno, would you want to handle this? Let me know.

Re: HOUDINI?

Bill,
I got to visit with Hardeen (H. Houdini) aabout the "Houdini" applying
for IBM
membership. He told me he knew of someone in Reno that had their name
changed to
this, and is billing himself this way. Although he wasn't ecstatic
about it, he didn't seem to
mind "Harry's" application to IBM.

Just thought you might like to know who you sponsored isn't a true
descendent after all.

Re: VIDEOS

Just out of curiousity, is the Dvorak keyboard so named because of the
inventors name or because those keys are on the home row? Also, how
difficult is it to train on a Dvorak after typing for 20 years on
Qwerty? You have to unlearn one process as you learn another. It's
probably confusing for a while.

Would hate to impose, Geno. There are about 6 of us plus you if you
really feel comfortable with a comp. Otherwise, please feel free to
say so. If Melinda is the choice, it would have to be the 8 p.m. show.

You may have to give me a voice call (818-899-8812) to discuss what is
going on with your capture, but offhand it sonds like you have some
kind of TSR (memory resident) program that is hogging your Alt-5 key.
If you know what I'm talking about, take a look at your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file to see if you are loading such a program - if not, print off a
copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and then give me a call - anytime up until
9:30 p.m. on most any day is OK. If you get machine, leave best number
to call you back at.

Re: BELOW THE BELT!

I was in the Saigon airport trying to catch a transport to Thailand
with 4 hours to go before country closed (was in group of last people
to leave Vietnam before the deadline) talking to some guys and some-
body asks me the time. I look at my watchband and somebody had sliced
the little leather straps holding the watch to the heavy leather
watchband. Cut it off with a blade right while we were talking. Never
felt a thing. Bought a watch from a guy when I hit Bangkok (bought on
street) for ten bucks and it ran for about two weeks. It was a nice
Seiko and took it to shop to fix and the jewels and been removed.
I don't know waht jewels do in a watch but this is what guy told me.
They swipe watches, take out the jewels to use in princess rings and
then sell the watches to SUCKERS.

Re: COMPUTER MAGIC

or The Great Disk Drive drive....

To raise money for new faster disk drives and other items for MAGIC!,
here is a special deal for you. I am selling copies (legit fctory
copies of course!) of _THE COMPUTERIZED MAGICIAN_ by Edward Martin and
George Schindler. 100% of all profits will go to MAGIC!. This 5.25"
disk will run only on IBM compatable equipment and runs in either
BASICA or GWBASIC. The programs on this disk need no special graphics
cards or monitors and will run on either color or monochrome monitors.

There are 9, count 'em, NINE mind blowing tricks per disk. Some are
totally self working. Just set your victim -er spectator down to the
keyboard and wait for them to blow themselves away. Other effects
require your participation. Here is a complete listing:

1)_COMPUTER ESP_ Five standard ESP symbols are shown and selected in
any order by the spectator while your back is turned or after you leave
the room. They then clear the screen and you return. Without ever
touching the keyboard, you can discern the order chosen.

2)_USER FRIENDLY_ A comedy revelation of a freely selected card. Have
your spectator select a face down card from a real deck. The computer
will ask a series of funny questions to which the spectator types the
answers. The computer then reveals the chosen card. Turn over the real
card and IT MATCHES!

3)_RISING CARD_ A freely selected card "rises" on the screen without
your assistance after the computer asks your spectator some comedy
questions. The spectator can even lie about the answers and his card
still rises.

4)_COMPUTER TRIUMPH_ (Sure to be a Biro favorite) The best in computer
card effects. After shuffling the deck 1/2 face up and 1/2 face down,
a selected card is the only reversed card both on screen and in your
deck. A DOUBLE WHAMMY!!

5)_TWENTY ONE_ A self working card revelation. Just start it up and
watch. The spectator always has free choice and the computer does it
all.

6)_NUMBER MENTALISM_ Without touching the computer, you can divine a
spectators chosen number. A secret message on the screen assists your
mental abilities.

7) _NINE CARD PREDICTION_ The computer leads the spectator through a
series of random moves among nine cards on the screen. The result
matches your prediction that has been in full view before the effect
began. Can be repeated immediately

8)_MIND OVER COMPUTER_ (The ultimate ESP challenge) Spectator freely
selects and hides his card. You immediately match it on the screen.

To order this GEM that no self respecting, computer operating MAGIC!AN
should be without, send $15.00 plus $1.50 shipping and handling to:

                      Burt Carpenter

Remember 100% of the profits go to support this great forum we call

There are many sneaky ways tomake any book a force. Gaetan Bloome
has a handling where a card is tossed into the pages and there are
ways with thread, glue, you name it you got it...
.
The one I like is a big guy comes up to you and says "Take this
book or I'll break your arms!" Now that is FORCE.... Especially
if it is an American Gladiator... my new favorite TV Show.

OK, OK, it's late and the altitude has gotten me here in good ol'

Re: VIDEOS

The Dvorak keyboard is named for its inventor. I had several copies of
the layout around, but, of course, now that we are talking about it, I
can't find any. As I recall, the most frequently used letters are on
the homekey row and I believe that a rather large percentage of common
words can be typed without ever leaving the homekey row. In addition,
frequent combinations do not rely on the use of the same fingers to
move to other rows. Also, important (common) keys are not delegated to
the weakest finger, generally the left pinky.

It isn't that difficult for a QWERTY touch typist to change to. But it
is damn near impossible to switch back and forth between QWERTY and
Dvorak.

There are several program utilities that will autoconvert to Dvorak

Yes, and I even have a great many of those Dvorak utilities...

The fifty-fifth set of MAGIC! messages - #17000 (September 1, 1991)
to #17499 (September 4, 1991) - has been transferred to a
downloadable file. The file is named MAGIC-55.TXT. This means that
you can now go to the file area, download this file, and read the
fifty-fifth volume of messages off-line. For those who know how to
use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-55.ZIP and
is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

Not only will transferring these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

OK - This is what a QWERTY keyboard looks like (the punctuation marks
on the top row are the shifted numeral keys):

                 Z X C V B N M , . /

AND here is the layout for the Dvorak keyboard:

MAGIC! member MAX MAVEN rarely appears on the American stage.
The evening of OCTOBER 6th, 1991, will be one of those rare
appearances. MAX will be performing on the stage of the Ice House
in Pasadena, California. If you've dreamed of seeing MAX perform,
this is your chance. And we'd like to put together a group of
MAGIC! members to share the experience. The performance is at
9 p.m. and reservations need to be made far in advance. MAGIC!
members will, of course, pay their own way and provide their own
transportation (car pools can be figured out on-line).

On the evening of WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9th a group of MAGIC! members
will be in LAS VEGAS for the late show with LANCE BURTON. The group
will include PETE BIRO and TABBY CRABB! This should be a unique
evening and it is quite possible (although not guaranteed) that
LANCE will join us for coffee after the show!

Each MAGIC! member will be responsible for his or her own expenses,
including a ticket to the show and a tip to the Maitre d', but Pete
is working on getting us VIP seating as a group. Tickets to the
show are $ 15, the tip should be around $ 5. If you are planning to
stay over, you will need to make arrangements at your favorite
hotel.

These two events are a great chance for MAGIC! members to get

Re: DENVER DOWNHILL

Magically speaking, I've been looking through the well read copy
of _Greater Magic_ I got from Charlie and got a rush when I saw
that it had belonged a while back to Ben Robinson, the bullet
catch guy. I snapped his book _12 Have Died_ up when it first
came out and read it twice. For some biarre reason, I too am
fascinated with the bullet catch. This is what lead me to Chung
Ling Soo, Annemann, Meyer, and others. The _Greater Magic_ book
had belonged to some magician in GB and carries the Davenport
sticker in the front. I visited a most marvelous library in NYC
and during our conversations we started talking magic table bases
and he (R.Robinson) asked me to identify some he had. I had been
trying to locate more of the great Conradi bases and he pulled
out two, though they aren't as nice as the ones I have sitting
here on the desk. Made around 1900, his had been used by a pro
magician from the city for 40-50 years and still worked great. I
want you to meet this guy sometime. You'd enjoy a visit to his
private digs. Don't go to the big apple without letting me know.
I said to him before leaving, "I don't suppose you'd want to part
with those Conradi stands would you?" I guess you know the
answer.
.
Gloria sez thank PETE for the FAX as you are the only person who
ever faxes her and she has fun reading them. A good person,
Gloria, and the best kind of wife for a rover like me.
.
Guys were playing golf yesterday on the tabman links and now have
a hole in office window and it is getting colder here. Ball came
through glass and just missed computer screen on desk. Golf ball
was sitting on mouse pad when I came inside to assay the damage.
Hard to replace colonial glass though but I had a premonition so
it's all my fault for not moving the tee box.
.
Decided I am going to quit drinking, etc tomorrow so still have
two pints of Old Grandad and a fifth of Lord Calvert to go and I
started at 5:30 am when I took Greg to the airport. Driving up he
told me he had had a dream about a card trick. He asked me if I
had a deck in the truck and I had an sealed deck in the glove
box. Well, he had sliced it open and reversed a card and sealed
it back up. I had told him several years ago that I always say
"Ace of Clubs" whenever I'm asked to "think of a card" (well, I
won't anymore). We had a good laugh and I turned him onto some
Stewart james stuff. He will be head of NY-MCA Music Pub in five
years (maybe sooner the way things are going). Magicians make for
good friends.
.
I think I'll save the antique bottle of Cuban Rum and the 50 year
old bottle of tequila as I'm scared they'll kill me. Also I
predict that I will be loosing most of the 50 pounds I have
gained over 6 years idle in the next 6 mos to a year. Feels good
to be rocking again, only this time with the experience to see
the pitfalls and let the young take to the road with an old hand
guiding them.
.
The proof of the photo I sent you looks great. Sorry the 8x10s
turned out so light but I guess the lab (the drug store down the
road) thought they were doing me a favor by lightening it up. In
the proof, the focus is upon the cards and your right hand. The
rest of you is hidden in the shadows and the green of the crap
table wool on the card table is perfect. I think I'll throw the
proof in the gig bag next week just to show you plus pics of a
bunch of tables just before mailing and some shots of the table
bases since I can't bring em with me this trip.
.
Have a good one.

Re: MAX MAVEN

I just came back from the Ice House in Pasadena (a comedy
club) where Max Maven performed. Those of you who were
fortunate enough to sign up with David Lichtman to attend
next weeks show are in for a real treat. I have never seen
one of Max's shows so I didn't know quite what to expect
other than he mainly does mentalism. I was a bit worried
it wasn't going to be much of a show since the first two
performers only did ten minutes of material but they were
merely the warm up acts for the headliner, Max. I was also
worried by his being billed as a comedy mindreader or comedy
mentalist. I'm thinking, what's that- slapstick mentalism?
One-liner mentalism? Those of you that have seen Max know
that his approach to his craft is serious but it is skilfully
woven with humor. What a seasoned pro! He's really in his
element up on stage-in total control and the audience was
thoroughly enjoying his performance. I'm sure all of you
that get to see him will have as much fun as I did.

Alas, I didn't get to attend the lecture either - hope someone did!
Sunday was the day of Nathan's big performance and he carried it off
rather well. He had the usual kind of luck - he was performing in a
park and just after he started, a set of fire engines roared by! He
had to wait it out, but he handled it pretty well and his effect was
very well received, both by the children and the adults.

Thanks for the report on Max Maven at the Ice House, Stan! Sounds like
it is going to be great to see next week. I've reposted the info on it
as, if someone would still like to join us, if they let me know by
Monday we might still be able to squeeze them in. This is a

The real work on the folded Close Card is that it must be made of

Finally, there is the appearing warts effect.

Re: MAX MAVEN

The Ice House is a comedy club which from what I understand has been
around for quite a long time. Probably one of the first in the area.
On the wall are pictures of up and coming performers that played there
in years gone by such as Jay Leno, Robin Williams, Roseanne Barr, David
Letterman, etc. There was a photo of Bob Hope standing outside of the
Ice House but I think he was there as a spectator, not a performer.
I have been there three times and each time the performers were all
very funny and worth the admission price of $7.50 or so. I'm guessing
it seats around 200 people. Two drink minimum ranging from $2.75 for
a soda up to the four and five dollar range for mixed drinks and house
specialties. There is an adjoining restaurant and they also serve Hors
d'oeuvres in the showroom.
Does that answer your question? Oh, dress is casual.

The Ice House is in the old part of Pasadena so it is possible the
original building had something to do with cold storage. I used to
work in a real ice house called United States Cold Storage where we
made ice by the 300 pound blocks. It was and is a huge facility. The
one in Pasadena could not have been the same type of operation.

Re: MAX MAVEN

After seeing last nights performance my wife asked me if I could do the
same tricks Max Maven did. She only asks me that if-
1. She liked the effects.
2. She can't figure them out.
Can I do the same tricks Max Maven did? I explained to her that would
be like looking at a painting by Renoir or Picasso and wondering if you
could paint like that because your box of crayons has the same colors
in it. I may have the same colors but there was only one Renoir or
Picasso. Because I may know the same techniques Max knows or I may be
able to re-create an effect Max does, the end result would not have the
same impact Max would have.
After seeing his show I have a better idea of his viewpoint on the
lecture video taping debate. I can see how Max's lecture would be
slanted more towards an inspirational or theoretical lecture. Not a
"this is how you do this trick" lecture. I've heard or read that any
trick is 10 per cent technique and 90 per cent presentation. I would
think in Max's case it is even a higher ratio than that on the
presentation side. I wouldn't and I COULDN'T present an effect like
Max but I sure did learn a lot about presentation from that one show.
I would very much look forward to a lecture given by him and I no
longer think a video tape of that kind of lecture I have in mind would
be necessary.

Re: MOJO!!!!

How many of you zip into the local magic shop to see "What's
New?" And I don't just mean tricks, the same goes for books.
One of the great treats for me, of late, is going through
the OLD STUFF, trying to figure out what it is that I have had in
storage for a number of years.
Additionally, I have been logging in my book collection on
the computer. (With a nice low-priced Data Base, called FILE
EXPRESS. Easy to customize and easy to use).
I have finished logging in my "regular" books. Still to go
are the RARE books, Gambling Books, and volumes on Juggling,
Ventriloquism and allied arts. Then the catalogs and uh, the
Lecture Notes.
Going through some of the old and nostalgic tricks I have
found two that I had forgotten about and I find would very likely
be KILLERS today. They are so old that (IMHO) they can be new.
If you haven't seen it -- it is new. Right?
One is the Loyd Enochs "Ink Bottle".
The effect: You borrow a ladies handkerchief. The nicer the
better. Kinda like borrowing a $100 bill makes the trick more
interesting than if you used a $5.00.
You say, "Gee, this is a beautiful, old fashioned
handkerchief... I need to mark it, but I don't want to use
something so MODERN as a ball point pen... so I'll use this old
bottle of INK. (Show bottle) I got this at an antique shop the
other day."
You open the bottle and dip a piece of paper into it and it
comes out with ink, black ink, on it. Real ink, no kidding. Then
you say, you can't find your Quill Pen, so maybe you will just
dip the corner into the ink. You actually end up stuffing the
entire handkerchief into the bottle.
You say, "Well, I guess I screwed that up! Let's try another
trick."
Bring forth a small paper bag and reaching in you bring out
a potatoe. You take a knife, and peal away a spot on the side of
the spud, and a little white spot is seen. Enlarging the hole a
bit and it appears to be cloth.
Lo and behold, as they say in some circles, the lady grasps
the corner and removes FROM INSIDE the potatoe her wonderful
white hanky... clean as a whistle. No, it does not use a thumb or
finger tip. Almost self-working!!! Clever and easy as drinking
water (that's what the House of Magic ads used to say).
To see demo... come to the Music City Conclave in Nashville,
where I plan to show some 'FORGOTTEN MAGIC'.
Another FORGOTTEN GEM is the Paul Fox Beer Trick.
Here you fairly show (I spin it on a stick - or wand) a Beer
Can absolutely empty. And the top has been removed.
Talk about how beer is made. You have a small bag of "hops"
(actually confetti) and take some out, put into can and show to
someone at a nearby table (comedy club or parlour show) and let
them keep it. Then you FILL the can with confetti. Saying, "It
just takes a few seconds to brew (you can tie in slogans or gags,
based on what they are saying in current TV beer commercials).
You cover the can with the small bag for a few seconds, uncover
and toss the bag aside. You pick up the can and pour a full
Pilsner Glass of beer.
You may give the beer and the can to someone. There is no
gaff to be discoverd. Just the real can and the real beer!
I just don't want to lose the glass, it is a beautiful
antique Pilsner Glass given to me as a gift by Danny Dew -- just
for use with this trick.

Re: MO MOJO!!!!!

How many do the mis-made flag?
With patriotism no longer a dirty word here in the USA,
tricks with flags should be once again very popular.
I dug up a nice set of the flags, from Rice (has anyone else
come close to the quality Harold Rice established some years
ago?) and a quick look into some of the classic books on silk,
like the Rice Encyclopedia (when in Francis Martineau going to
finish Vol. 4?) you can do a really clean version using one of
the old Al
Baker Dye Tubes. Tenkai had some beautiful handling of the dye
tube in one of his books.
If you do the Silk to Egg, you might want to switch to using
a pair of small silk flags. I do a sort of Tribute to Betsy Ross
patter, combined with the old gag about "waving the flag to get
SURE applause" -- this brings it up to date.
Additionally, the handling for Silk to Egg can be really
made easy if you think about it. I hate seeing some of the crude
versions where you have two eggs in one hand, palming and
switching. Not much of what I had seen looked natural, so I
started to analyze the trick. Take it into another dimension.
Think THEATER. Some of the great misdirection comes from the
legit stage, where no magi are involved. Just good theatrical
deportment.
If you think that way, the time to switch the egg is AFTER
the trick is done and the audience is FINISHED PAYING CLOSE
ATTENTION. They are done concentrating, they think the trick is
finished. And bam... AS AN AFTERTHOUGHT you now deliver the line,
"Well, if I was a REAL magician I would break the egg!" Which you
do. On the let down (you have the fake egg in your left hand and
the flag (or silk) you have reproduced from your right pocket is
in your right hand. Under the silk is the real egg. Don't try to
palm it, just hold it out of sight under the silk.
Try this in front of a mirror. Remember the trick is over
and you are merely starting to put the props away.
Just place the silk into your left hand (on top of the egg)
and look to your left... taking the silk away (with the fake egg
already in left hand) the real egg, in right hand just 'IS THERE'
make no fuss. It is just there... then you deliver the final
blow. There is no suspicion that you switched anything, you did
not point up anything. It is over and you have eliminated a major
"sweat" part of the trick! A very good one I might add.
The handling is much like the Shuttle Pass with coins, or
the Vernon acquitment with the 4 balls shown as 3 in his cups and
balls routine.
And that great (I am not kidding) trick... "SOFT SOAP". Boy,
I can still remember the first time I saw this one. I had no idea
how it could be done. I remember the kids going for the box and
ripping it to shreds at the finish!
And the Dye Box. Yep, the sucker sliding Dye Box. I saw an
act do this at an "adult" comedy club and tear them up. Boy, what
ADULTS... they were screaming like crazy to "Open the other
door!" just like a roomful of 12 year olds! Saw the same reaction
from (HONEST) the Hippity Hop Rabbits. (Real name: Norman's
Elusive Bunnies).
Proving once again, there is nothing new. The old stuff can
be new, just dust it off and give it a go!

Re: EVEN MO MOJO!!! YO!

How many of you have found the PERFECT trick?
What is the perfect trick? Well, it depends. If you are
looking for a "do anywhere" angle proof, goof proof effect, that
works without setting, has no replacement parts (like a newspaper
tear) it is pretty tough to find anything better than the Chinese
Sticks.
There are many versions, however. And there is, in fact
"work" on the handling.
Some of the best sticks available today come from the
Hungarian magic dealer, George Kovari. Based in England, Kovari
makes the smoothest operating sticks anywhere. One of the key
ingredients in Kovari's sticks is something I introduced to him
on one of my lectures. Teflon. I had a set of sticks that I had
modified that George fell in love with. He wanted to know what I
had done to make them run so smoothly and without any perceptible
tilt. Well, one of the sticks did not require any tilt, it was
gaffed to work with a spring reel. The other stick was lined with
thin sheet Teflon. I gave some to Kovari and he has incorporated
it into the construction of his sticks.
The Histed Sticks are a favorite of mine. I found an
original set years ago in Davenport's Crypt. I modified these,
took the basic "Histed" principle (the sticks are detailed in the
book, "Magic Circle Magic" with a routine by Ali Bongo. I made my
sticks from regular plumber's PVC pipe and connectors and added
plastic, joke shop water faucet taps to give it a comedic
appearance. You can, in fact, use real faucet taps if you want as
they have nothing to do with the mechanical working of the trick
and are only for decoration. Instead of Tassels, or Pom
Poms, which I feel don't fit my performing style, I fitted the
sticks with white (for visibility) Sink Stoppers. Unlike with the
Chinese Sticks, which use gravity, there is no weight problem
with the Histed system. If you want to use stoppers with
Chinese Sticks, you must make "replicas" from styrofoam to allow
the weights to pull them up easily.
The idea for stoppers on Chinese Sticks comes from English
funnyman Terry Seabrooke and the taps are my addition.
All kinds of gags have been devised for a finish to the
sticks. Roy Benson used to have one of the best versions,
finishing the trick by bringing in a 3rd stick. Fred Kaps used
the same Benson idea in Europe, when Henk Vermeyden showed it to
him.
I worked out a comedy finish using a third Tassel on top of
an authentic Chinese Hat, but later added the third, "Spare"
Tassel coming out at the top of my trousers. The Tassel was on a
white nylon parachute cord with a fishing weight at the other
end. The cord ran down my leg, making my pants leg, in effect,
another chinese stick, with the cord running down inside it. When
you pulled the Tassel from the top of the pants, pressure against
your pants from pushing outward with your stomach muscles would
"hold" the Tassel in the "down" position. Then, when you pulled
on the Tassel of one of the Chinese Sticks, you only had to relax
the pressure of the stomach muscles and the weight would drop
down your leg, pulling the Tassel back up to the top of your
trousers. A couple of repeats made this a funny visual finish to
the Chinese Sticks.

Jim Piper, a fellow who frequently works the Castle does a slidingdie

After listening to Pete and trying a couple of things, Nathan settled
on a production box effect - He displayed the outside and inside of an
"empty" box, assurred the audience it was empty, and then produced a
silk, a toy rabbit, and a 12-foot streamer from the box. It went over
very well.

My wife came home with an early Christmas present today. A new Tux!
I wanted to have Ramon Galindo put a topit in and I was wondering if I
should have the jacket one size larger than "just right" to compensate
for loads such as a bottle of wine. The jacket I have a topit in right
now is a tad small and with the bottle in the topit it is REALLY
noticeable. (Maybe I should use something smaller than gallon jugs?)
Seriously, do your jackets with topits have extra room tailored in to
them? Thanks for any advice in advance!

Re: TOPIT

Read Geoffrey Buckingham's "It's Easier Than You Think" and you will
see his principle of keeping LOADS on your body, where YOUR BODY
IS THINNEST. If you can't hide it... you can't hide it... so you
need to do something else.
.
Have you seen Bob Reed's way to produce the champagne bottle? It
is done almost same as what Ammar is doing, but without any Topit,
bag, holder, nuttin. He fooled the wheeeee outa me when he did it.
.
Ammar's is good too, both deserve study. Then there is the really
olde version using a coke bottle on a thread. I forget the details,
but it is a swing load. The gimmick was one of the really cleverly
made caps you buy in liquor stores to put onto a bottle to keep the
Fizz "in"... it has a little lever you flip to lock/unlock. The
thread is attached to the lever. When you pop it open away goes the
gaff.
.
Sam Berland had a great production I used to do of a full wine
glass. There are others, by Joe Berg and one that was just held
under your armpit (with cloth on bottom of the stemmed glass's
base)...
.
Many ways to do the stuff. Keep thinkin!

Re: DENVER DOWNHILL

No, the Ice House is _not_ a "standard place with the brick back wall
like almost all comedy clubs." For one thing, the stage has a back
curtain.

More importantly, the showroom is laid out differently than most other
nightclubs; the audience is tiered, with most of the room employing
counters rather than tables, which means that everyone is facing the
stage.

Also, the club has an extensive history, going back far longer than the
average comedy club. This means, among other things, that it is far
better organized than most. Probably the most significant result of
this history is that because of its background the Ice House draws a
particularly diverse demographic mix in its audience.

Re: MO MOJO!!!!!

I think there are many excellent pointers on showmanship and ideas that
can spark your creativity that you can acquire by reading. To become
proficient at anything, ESPECIALLY magic you have to DO it. I have
read the showmanship books you mentioned and they gave me some good
pointers and guidance. It is then up to me to put it into practice.
If I hadn't read these books I would most likely spend my time
perfecting many incorrect skills. Sure, some people are born showmen
or have natural talent for the stage but for a common magic hobbyist
such as myself I need to pay attention to the wisdom of those that
learned things the hard way before I came along. Just reading the
books won't make me a better performer but they give me a path to
follow.

Re: TOPIT

I really don't know about tailoring to size... BUT if you are doing
if for "serious" you should examine all aspects of dress. Style,
look, FIT, color EVERY AVENUE OF THOUGHT... and if you are always
going to do a production and use a Topit, then you probably need
to think about the fit and HANG when loaded, not loaded? Have you
thought about the STIFFNESS of the material? So the coat opens and
hangs properly? Closes and keeps its shape? Is it reinforced so if
you toss stuff in the outer garment area does not "tell"????
Bob Read... Hmmmm.... time out, will go to the bookshelf, be
right back.
In the book "Thanks to Pepys" 1973, Bob Read, London, England,
you will find the complete work for the Champagne Bottle production.
I assume the Ammar method is in print as well. But don't have ALL
OF HIS MATERIAL TO HAND...
I can't believe Read hasn't done a video... but looking thru
all my lists don't see one. Anyway his bottle production is very
similar to Ammar's but DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY TOPIT, HOLDER, NOTHING,
JUST THE BOTTLE AND THE SILK. The misdirection is great.
Thanks to Pepys is basically a Killer 12 Minute act that can
be done in a party situation, literally surrounded. Bob works his
very funny stuff in pubs. His "Penultimate Cups and Balls" is one
of the funniest and most creative cups and balls routines ever!
You will get the impression I am a fan of Read. You are right!

The Santa Monica club was called the Horn. It was a terrific venue, as
it offered a varied line-up of more than comedy. They even had a house
trio, a rarity within the past decade. I headlined it several times,
and was sorry when it closed several years ago. The owners were a
husband/wife team, who split up. The female half opened another club in
Santa Monica which I worked only once during its short life (it closed
after only a year or so), co-headlining with Dale Gonyea. (If you're

Pete,
I'm gonna jump in here real quick, and say that as a professional
entertainer in another field, I agree wholeheartedly with your
assessment. I started performing in front of audiences when I had only
been playing guitar for 2 weeks. I was AWFUL! But I learned things to
do that made me a pretty good entertainer. My brother had played in
his room (Now now, let's keep it clean) for 12 years before he ever
ventured in front of an audience. Now, I am an accomplished musician
with several different instruments and styles in my repotoir
While my brother is every bit as good a musician as I am, I can do
more for an audience a cappella than he. Nor does he understand
the difference between being a good entertainer and being good at your
craft. One helps the other, but they are not mutually exclusive.
Enjoy!
Kevin

but is chock full of incredibly wonderful stuff. Lots of repeats from
his trio of lecture notes, which I've been coveting, but lots of new
stuff. Wonderful things with cards, clearly explained. Check out
Weber's recent review of the book (in M A G I C ?) and when you read

Both were commercial paperbacks -- BLACKWOOD CULT was a gothic mystery
with impossible crime, witchcraft, and a less-than-bright heroine (a
requirement of the genre at that time). LOVE THAT SPY was an espionage
novel with a lotta sex, or vice versa; it was written in a British
style as a takeoff on Len Deighton -- doing that sort of thing was the
way I amused myself while writing the deathless prose.

The latest issue of Opus has a review by David Britland of both
Erdnase books. Of the Whaley/Busby tome, Britland states "...whilst
fascinating it doesn't really provide any conclusive evidence that
Erdnase might have been a card shark called Milton Franklin Andrews."
And "Was Erdnase...Milton Franklin Andrews? I don't know and Busby
and Whaley can only guess though the trail they take you on is an
enjoyable one."
In reference to the Ortiz book, "It's a joy to read, easy to follow,
an excellent reference work and truly inspirational. That it makes
Erdnase so accessible in a reasoned way is probably its chief asset."

There is a GREAT film by Saul Bass titled "Why Man Creates." We should

with you - magic stuff is best worked on in kicking things around
(hmmm... you don't think maybe I started MAGIC! with that in mind, do

No -- I worked in the force words as I wrote. Since they occurred in
the first sentence, it wasn't much of a problem. Also in the one case
-- read -- it could be used both present and past tense.

I don't agree with you about the Diamond bill switch being superior to

have to be out of sight for at least a moment, where it isn't EVER out
of sight in the Kozlowski. Also, Paul has got to keep the switched out
bill palmed, so a good worker can appear cleaner with the Kozlowski.

panicked you were going to blame me for it. One thing I did notice is
that you don't WRITE PROTECT your tapes - in this case it worked to an
advantage, but I went ahead and protected 'em for you. Biro stuff is
too rare and valuable to mess up. You got package yet?

Re: MANHATTAN

If you let me know some landmarks on your map near the site, I should
be able to figure where it is.

Re: SHORTENED MSG

You started doin' three card monte back around message #20883 when I
told you to have FAITH 'cause you was doin' a con in _SLC_.
Personally, knowin' the local history, I'd do a bird act, using
seagulls.

Re: LAS VEGAS ROOMS

I think that with all the arrivals and departures being at different
times for the MAGIC! get together on Oct. 9th in Vegas, that some of us
won't be able to make an earlier show prior to Lance. Will try to get
some info and get whole thing wrapped up today.
