Yes, Barry, we have gone to a subscription system. I've been letting

places like Hawaii, but will be sending you a message about it in the
next few days.

Re: MAX MAVEN

RE: Hiring masons for the comedy club show. Once upon a time, Marjorie
Merryweather Post was having a party at her Palm Beach home -
Mar-A-Lago - and came by as the band was setting up. She asked 'em how
it was goin' and they said that the room was a little small (her
ballroom was only about 100' x 200'). So she showed 'em the room next
door and they said, "No bigger than the other one." She said, "No, I
meant both together." Called in a crew that tore the wall out for the
night and then had it rebuilt the next day.

Prior to her death, she gave house to Fed. G'vt with a couple of
provisos - that she could continue to live there until her death, and,
because she hated Dick Nixon - Pres. at the time - that it could NEVER
be used as a Presidential retreat. Fed. never could figure out what to
do with the place - Town of Palm Beach would not allow it to be turned
into a tourist spot - so they eventually sold it to The Donald. Don't
know how it fits into his complex financial picture these days.

Re: LAS VEGAS ROOMS

If you like, I can meet both of you there. My budget is limited, so I'd
rather eat than spend $25.00+ on
another show. (Thank you Geno for your kind offer)

I'll have my mini-van and can carry four of us to wherever we decide to
go.(more if we're VERY friendly!)

It looks like the popular vote is to eat (or whatever) and meet for
Lance's show. I'm sure we can find
SOMETHING to talk about until 11.

Any other takers?

Re: BILL SWITCH

Where I disagree is that the THUMB TIP type bill switches are so
contrived. A "P E R F O R M E R" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like Jim Ryan, Johnnie Paul switched bills so convincingly I had
NO IDEA HOW OR WHEN... the TT types use the technique to TRY TO
OVERCOME... And the Jennings one in his big book is great too.
If you know how to MANAGE the audience and perform and misdirect,
you don't care if the bill is out of sight for a milisecond. Hey,
I used to just say, "Is this the bill you gave me?" and when they
say YES, I put it into my pocket and say (this is a variant) "Good,
I'll have it back next Tuesday!" Then bring out the switched bill.
.
And... if you tell me the TT version is done WITHOUT THE BILL GOING
OUT OF SIGHT... YOU HAVEN'T BEEN PAYING ATTENTION. It has to go
out of sight! ARGO!

Re: BILL SWITCH

Pete - -

It doesn't matter if you use a TT or not if you ain't a performer.
Neither method is good or bad, only the audience's perception counts.
And, NO, with the TT method the bill is NOT "out of sight for a
nanosecond" - it is EXCHANGED right in front of the spectators, IN PLAIN
VIEW.

Certainly, there are even more ways to do the bill switch than the
Diamond (Palm) method and the Kozlowski (TT) method, and each does have
its place - the palm can be done impromptu for example, very handy if
you lost your tip. And yes, the Biro Bill Switch works - FOR YOU.

All I'm saying is that _I_ _personally_ think that the Kozlowski method,
done right (an excellent version, for example, is on Michael Ammar's
Classic Renditions Vol III) by the right performer, appears better than
the palm method.

Personally, I prefer to do the bill switch by swallowing the
spectator's bill and coughing up the exchange bill. Then later, after
eating a can of beans, I expell the spectator's bill in the form of
quarters.

Re: SHORTENED MSG

Eeeerrrggghhh - I thought so. You is gotta practice safe videoing.
Take a look at the front of a VHS tape (opposite the door that swings
open) - the part where you put the long skinny label - and you will see
a leetle plastic tab. You remove the tab and the tape cannot be
recorded on. On Beta the tab is on the bottom of the case - where the
hubs are - and you break it out with a little nail file or screwdriver
or something like that. In each case, a piece of tape over the hole
will allow the tape to be recorded on.

Actually, TA sez it is obsolete spelling but I LIKE IT. It is an
unseen device used to pull off a magical effect. In this case, unseen
is all the work that went into pulling off the preproductive FEKING
of the REAL ISSUES. I saw a set of the magazines in question last

I think Greget hasem from time to time. Would bet that Geo. Daily

order than I have been. I have tried to bite my tongue and not
say anything, but when someone OWES you a few items:
1. Fred Braue Notebooks $150.00 Last issue - Nov. 1985
2. Epoptica Subscription $37.50 Last issue - Sept. 1989
3. Arcane Subscription $30.00 Last issue - July 1985
I believe this comes to about $217.50 of mine that this jerk has
held on to for 6 YEARS. This is bad enough but now this a--hole
has the nerve to stop sending me his "occasional rag" BECAUSE I
GUESS I DON'T ORDER OFTEN ENOUGH FROM HIM. WOULD YOU????????
Mr. B will get no more of my money until he makes good on what he
now owes me.
I certainly hope that he doesn't owe the other 6,000 magicians
on his list $200 each.

Should I assume that sometime in the past 6 years you have dropped him
a note or two to remind him of this? Perhaps a small computer program
that sends him a monthy fax? I obviously was not taking any sides in
this, nor am I prepared to defend Mr. B. from any errors he has
possibly made. All I know is that my order for some small items
arrived within 4 days - very nicely packaged.

Re: FUGITIVE COINS & SPIRIT M

This subject heading should read "Fugitive Coins & Spirit Matchbox".
I have a couple of questions to anyone who does either of these
effects. I learned the Fugitive Coins from the David Roth lecture.
(It's even in the notes!) The effect is where you show a quarter and
a half dollar and supposedly giving them both to the spectator to hold
behind his back. What you really d o is give him the half and switch
the quarter for a 1955 or 1956 five peso piece. It's supposed to feel
like a small coin and large coin, obviously the quarter and half.
Anyhow, the spectator brings his hands still closed out in front of him
and you take what he thinks is the half but is really the 5 peso piece.
This you switc-h for the quarter you still have finger palmed and the
effect is you have transposed the quarter from his hand to yours and
the half from your hand to his. Roth calls this a psrfect tactile
illusion. He says he has never been caught at this and indeed the
magician in the audience he demonstrated this on was fooled. I have
been caught two out of seven times! They said "Hey these don't feel
like the coins you just showed me!" Does anyone else do this effect
and have they had better success than I have?
Eugene Burgers "The Animated Matchbox" as described in his book
"The Performance of Close-Up Magic", he says to tie a knot in the
invisible thread. I use the thicker "esoteric" thread from Stevens
that he suggests but have you ever tried to tie a knot in invisible
thread? It's tough! I tried anchoring it with wax but it pulled free.
Any suggestions??

There has been some mention on here, of late, of folks like Red Skelton
and W. C. Fields. Wireless has the following offerings this month:

it's Red at his best: a whole hour of hilarious clips and routines
from America's most lovable comedian. You'll see his famous

Also,

   "The Best of W. C. Fields, Volumes 1 & 2. W. C. Fields was
America's top comedian in the 1930s and 40s. Audiences across
the country roared at the skits, stories, and snappers on his
weekly radio show with Don Ameche, Edgar Bergen, and Charlie
McCarthy. These new cassettes, available only from Wireless(R),
present the best segments from those original radio broadcasts,
many drawn from Fields' private collection. You'll hear "The
Pharmacist," "The Temperance Lecture," and 10 more riotous

Re: FUGITIVE COINS & SPIRIT M

You may find it easier to tie a knot in fine thread by using a
cylindrical object such as a pen. This should have some heft to it; a
light-weight plastic ballpoint will not do. Lay the pen across the
thread, holding it in place as you make an overhand knot. Then, as you
pull the knot closed, you can allow the pen to slide out of the way.
Once the first knot is in, you'll find it easier to add subsequent
knots on top of it if you desire.

Re the coins... I think "management" and off handed comentary, so
they don't suspect anything will solve it for you. How long you
been doing it? 5, 6 years? I bet Roth had people catch him for a
year or two... IT REALLY TAKES A LONG TIME TO LEARN THE SUBTLE
AND CONVINCING STUFF. How to keep people from grabbing props, etc.
etc. TAKES YEARS ...
.
Tie thread... There is an old trick my mom taught me to tie a knot
on the end of fine thread. It is tuff to describe, but what you do
is to Hold thread in left hand. Wrap it once around the right index
finger the loose end hanging down about half an inch on the side of
the finger toward you. Hold in place with right thumb. Wrap the
thread over the top, down and come out from below with the thread
toward your tip side of the finger. When the thread crosses, your
right thumb goes over the lap (it looks like an X) Keep light
pressure with the thumb which pushes the crossed thread to the
left and OFF THE END OF THE FINGER, the fingertip drags the thread
thru the loop formed and when the end is thru you grip it and
voila a knot. Do this a couple of times over the same spot to make
a thicker knot. Hope this is understandable....

Considering that they are not perfect force books, which of your two
books is the "better" force book, i.e., which has the higher percentage
of success?
Regarding your Encyclopedia and an earlier David Lichtman comment, is
it nearly out of print?

Pete, Bob Read has a video, two actually. There were some of the
early Videonics tapes. One of the tapes does include the bottle
production and goes into some detail in its explanation.
On another subject, which of the Goldston books are you missing a
key. I might be able to send you one.
Also, got the car and Topper - thanks. Regarding the latter, are
there any instructions (or hints) on its use? Will get a check in the

Oh, and did you ever find the Takagi Cup? Thanks.

I have never revealed the best switch. It is akin to the clip on
the end of a pencil, where you walk back and just swap ends.
.
You borrow a bill. Fold into packet, place on your ear (like a
pencil) and when you turn you use the bill from your OTHER ear.
.
Seriously, a good one is to put the cap of a pen on both ends of
a pen. Put the bill under the clip and switch ends... more natural
looking than the Faust Clip.

The key (I have 3 books and 3 keys) seems to have gotten "fat",
maybe rust? If you have a spare of the smallerest (new word) and
can spare it, fine... if it don't work will return.
.
Read Video... hmmmmmmmmmmmm will look for 'em. One of the funniest
guys anywhere. Have you ever seen him do the Penultimate Cups and
Balls? I have one of his wristwatches (that falls apart) and can't
keep it from not falling apart... needs adjustment.
.
You should have seen him at Vegas doing a set and an EMERGENCY DOOR
ALARM WENT OFF..... Big laffs, then the yellow light came on (it
was a contest "time is almost up" warning light) and when he saw
the light come on... and due to delay when alarm went off, he new
the red light would be on in 30 seconds... and he had about 3
minutes of his act left to do... HE TOOK HIS COAT OFF AND TOSSED IT
OVER THE LIGHTS so the judges couldn't see them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.
Needless to say, nobody would have DQ'd him for time anyway, but
it was one of the funniest scenes in magic contest history.
.
Next to my win once... but that's another crazy story... 3 minute
laff caused by an outside situation I ad libbed a line on....
You will need to buy my 2nd book for that one... (First book will
be done before the year is up!) ARgh ;+)

TOPPER... basic trick. Fill the lid tray with chopped up pieces of
playing cards and put on top of a full card. This card will be a
dupe of one you will force.
.
BASIC (no emellishments): Card selected, lost in deck. A double edge
razor blade is put into the deck. Deck put in box. Shake well.
Open box and all cards are seen to be cut up 'EXCEPT THE SELECTED
CARD' (oh, yeh, put a razor in with the chopped pieces).
.
NOTE: dull the razor blades.
.
In my last lecture I have designed and made a different type of box
for the effect. It is thin black plastic and is like a himber wallet
in a way... in that you open a flap door one one side and a full
deck fits in it. You turn it over and open the flap door and the
cut pieces are in that side. Hard to describe on screen without
a sketch.
\| |\ <-------ruff idea, on end, |= box top and bottom, \=lids.
Proportions of above little sketch wrong, but you can figger it
I am sure...

I've already told you to save me a space at Nuevo DeCarlo compound.
Can't believe that price! And you are right - 138.5K here would buy
rights to front lawn. Can't remember who did it, but during the Carter
admin there was a comedian who did a bit about "Inflation is your
friend." His argument in it's favor was something like "Didn't you
always dream of living in a 100-thousand dollar house and driving a
30-thousand dollar car? Well, thanks to inflation, you can!" I'm told
that the price for my little 1950's tract bungalow is around a COUPLE
of hundred grand now. When we were lookin' we saw a CHICKEN COOP in
Hollywood for $150K (about 12 years ago) - it seriously still had the
railings for the chickens to roost on and a big pile of chicken guano
in the backyard. Guy was trying to convince us that it was a "charming
craftsman home." Also saw a place that was a perfect studio for porn
flicks - took us a while to figure it out - we were impressed with the
nice size of the master bedroom.

from Reno who performs under the name Houdini and is using his stage
name on his membership application.
I guess the spirits are very much amoung us this October.

I should have more details soon and will pass them on. Meanwhile, out
of sensitivity to the bid process, I think it would be wise if those
who know details of individual bids, etc. do NOT disclose them just yet
in public messages. I will be happy to coordinate info in private

Re: CASTLE LIBRARY

Hi,

I'm a relative new-comer to this board and also to the Magic Castle.
I took my regular member audition in June and have really been enjoying
the Castle and all the wonderful Magic I get to see. This board too, is
quite amazing, if only for the sheer volume of messages that goes by.
I try and log-in about twice a week and I hardly have time to
read all the messages. Its great to see such a dedicated bunch of
Magiholics (and I thought I was alone all these years!)

I do have a couple of questions for you T.A. (or anybody else that
cares to answer.) First off, the burning question on my mind is when
is the Castle library going to be finished and open on a regular
basis? In truth, its one of the big reasons I went through the
psychic pain of an audition for regular membership *grin*. If
you don't know yet, what should I do to make an appointment to
see the library (I'll bet I could call you, couldn't I?).

Secondly, can you recommend a good reference on the 100 dollar bill
switch. (I'm not sure what the "official" title is, but the plot is
pretty simple....the Magician borrows a 100 dollar bill and with open
hands folds it up, twists it, and unfolds it to reveal a 1 dollar bill.
I have an idea for a plot-line in which just such a switch would serve
me well).

Well thanks for the time, and the opportunity to be part of this
group.

David, I have attempted to contact JB several times in the last
six years. Out of probably a half dozen attempts, I never heard
from JB. I once got a letter from a Pete Mary (Shipping Mgr),
but with absolutely no mention of the Braue Notebooks. I think
what bothers me the most about everything is that even owing people
as much merchandise as he does, he then drops you off the mailing
list. I EVEN purchased the collectors edition of TMWWE from JB.
After about a year I did finally receive it. Was the wait worth it?
I guess purchasing this wasn't enough because I still DO NOT receive
the newsletter. How about the Tamariz book and the Renee Levand
book and the Jose Carroll book? Still not enough for the newsletter.
I have just decided to give up and I certainly WILL NOT EVER order

What a bargin!!! By the way, each of these great issues were
approximately 30, yes, 30 pages. So for $150 you get 150 pages.

Re: CASTLE LIBRARY

There are many ways to switch a bill. Larry Jennings has a good one
in print. Paul Diamond teaches and sells one. The best I have ever
seen is the handling by Johnny Paul... you can learn it from the
video sold by Joe Stevens. The Kozloski (spelling?) switch with a
thumb tip is very popular and Michael Ammar (often here online) has
a very thourugh video teaching it. Roger Klause has a handling that
is very good. James Lewis (Castle Member) sells the mis-made bill.
.
But my personal gripe is that I don't like the UN NATURAL way the
thumb tip version looks. Too stiff for me. Oh, Jay Marshall does
a non thumb tip version that is excellent.
.
The best tho, is the late Johnny Paul version. Timing, mood, and
atitude are what is needed... and he had it all!

Re: CASTLE LIBRARY

Pete and I have been kicking the Hundred Dollar Bill Switch around on
here lately (incidentally, it can be done with a one to a hundred,
anything to a mismade, or whatever) and I still like the Kozlowski
method with the thumb tip. I don't know if the Kozlowski manuscript,
originally published in 1977, is still available, but I think that the
contact for it might be Jay Marshall and I believe his number is
800-EDI-BULL.

The Michael Ammar tape on it is really excellent in my opinion. You
can contact Michael about it by leaving him a private message on here,
or you can leave a private message for BURT CARPENTER. Burt has it
available and he donates 10% to help support MAGIC!. The tape is, I
believe, $35. And while you are at it, you might want to order the
companion tape on the Floating Bill & John Cornelius' Coin That Falls
Up.

Apparently the delays at J.B.'s have been discovered by a number of
magi. Did you order TMWWE pre-publication? I ordered mine after it
was out and it arrived very quickly. I would like to think that the
existance of MAGIC! and the open communications on here (over which I
have no control, for which I assume no responsibility, and concerning
which I deny any liability) will let dealers know that negative things
that happen will likely be reported and commented on. Maybe, in the
long range, that will help when such things occur.

I don't mean to get into the esoteric areas of the wonderful world of
computing. If it can export to Word Perfect, than it can probably
export to an ASCII file. (Much like we write to one another here.)
Dbase has a fairly simple way of reading ASCII files.
Out of curiousity, does a file that is made with your program end in
"DBF" as in "Magic.dbf"? It might be using the same format that
Dbase uses. If you want to send me a file, and have me check it out,
I would be most happy to. I could also program a Dbase or Smart
program to do exactly what you want.
Whatever you want to do just tickles me pink!
Enjoy!

Re: FUGITIVE COINS

I use the "Fugitive Coins" all the time. It's a great one-on-one
effect. I first read about it in Richard's Almanac (#21, I think) and
fooled with it but didn't really start to use it until I saw it again
on one of Roth's videos.
Usually people are absolutely flabbergasted. It gets good reactions
because people are so convinced that they actually held the quarter and
half. The only time I've come close to getting "caught" was the time
I did the routine for my mom of all people. She told me that the one
coin just didn't feel like a quarter (she was actually talking about
the half, the smaller of the two coins she held), but didn't know how
I got the coins to change places. One thing about my mom is that she
is a very small person, 4'9", and thus has very small hands. Anyway
the whole incident got me to thinking about the whole routine, so I
added a couple of things. First I use the Kaps subtlety twice during
the routine to show that my hands are "clearly" not holding anything
extra, just in case someone has that idea. Don't over do it. I just
make a point while gesturing with my hands at one point and, at
another, it is while I'm indicating to keep the hands separate.
Second, I never directly say anything about size. Instead, while
initially showing the coins, I make several comments about the
differences between the two coins, including the fact that the half is
worth twice as much as the quarter (suggesting that perhaps the half is
twice as big as the quarter!).
Oh, one other thing. When I first started playing around with this
I got the wrong 5 peso piece (a whole roll of them!). It turned out to
be smaller than the one required, as a matter of fact it is only a
little bigger than the half. The ones I have now are dated 1957 and
are 72% silver. They are 1-3/8 inches in diameter and have Hidalgo on
them. I got them for about $3 a piece at a local coin shop.
Don't give up on it, it is a fantastic routine.
                                             Charlie

Thank you for your excellent information on the Fugitive Coins. I use
the 1956 five peso piece. Roth suggested the 1955 or 1956 and I
thought I remembered him saying the 1957 was too large. They aren't
very standard as to their minting from year to year. However, I just
measured my '55 and it is the same diamater as your '57. Anyway, the
Kaps subtelty is a clever touch. I'm saving your message and work on
it. Thanks!

Re: BILL SWITCH

Regarding this thumb tip versus no thump tip switch business...
While the manner of presentation can make this a meaningless
discussion I think the core of this can be focused on what might
be an interesting point!
What I think is being said here is that Ryan, Paul, Mullica, etc
presented the switch so entertaining that no one cared to think about
where the other bill might be...that simply was not the point of the
effect. I mean are we really fooling anyone? Does anyone think for
a moment that the switch of the one to a hundred (or whatever) is
done any other way than a clever switch? Does not the use of the
tip offer a temptation for the switch to be presented as a challenge?
Is there not a very thin line here the crossing of which is asking
the spectator to "find out where the other bill is". My point is
that once again we are falling into the trap of arguing method when
the important facet is the presentation and appearance of the effect.
Either method is excellent if the presentation is done properly. By
the same token, neither method will suffice if the presentation is
not proper.

Buy a file cabinet for the paper and paperback stuff. Get dividers
and put A-B-Cs on 'em and file 'em that way. Other method is to
get the cardboard file boxes (you know like they put software manuals
in) and file the paper backs in them and put em on your shelves. I
use both. Lecture notes are in file cabinet as are manuscripts and
instructions. Small paperbacks in file boxes as are magazines and
other periodicals. Recently I have been putting old, little used
stuff in xerox boxes and storing in attic (such as Linking Rings and
Abras) I can't afford more shelving and don't have room for it if I
could. Besides, got to have room for computer, railroad and modeling

Re: BILL SWITCH

The swith... or any switch... has to be thought out like a real
gambler would do a switch. When NOBODY is paying attention. That is
the problem most magi don't understand.
.
My "source" for gaming timing and psychology in Nevada says,
"Magicians are dumb, they work and work and work on moves so they
can be done while someone is looking at them. Gamblers don't work
so hard on the moves as they do on how to keep people from looking
at them at the "moment", therefore do things seemingly indetectable".
.
That is why I HATE THE THUMB TIP BILL SWITCH. No one, no one ever
has fooled me with it because the body language, hand positions,
the grip, the gaze, the moment -- everything reeks THEY ARE DOING
SOMETHING.
.
But Jim Ryan and Johnny Paul FOOLED THE CRAP OUT OF ME with thier
bill switching routines. Johnny would grab a bill, fold it a couple
of times and just rip it to pieces. No posing, no moves. He would
toss it on the floor. And sometimes he had a guy acting like a
Janitor that would JUST HAPPEN BY with a little broom and handled
dust pan, sweep up the pieces and take off!
.
Now that's Bar Magic to the Nth... he will surely be missed.
.
Also I NEVER CAUGHT HIM GET READY with his floating bill, the one
that jumped up off the table into a glass, or ran across the bar.
I NEVER saw the hook up, never saw the get ready or the clean up.
.
I almost wish he hadn't taught it on his tape. (Which I just pulled
out to RE LOOK AT to confirm what I have just written.

.
After that the Video stuff and SOME DAY the Toy collection books
and the Auto Library.... ARgh...
.
How many knew that Jones, Lloyd, in addition to his amazing magic
library ALSO had a huge Mystery Story collection. I wonder where
that went???? Hmmmmmm. Got to call Byron. Interesting (if you care

Re: TRIAL BY FIRE

TRIAL BY FIRE?
Ted Maskel, a San Francisco-based "fire eater" is undergoing a
trial for a drunk driving charge. Maskel claims he was not drunk,
but had been "fire eating" and the Kerosene he spits out in his
flaming finish... is what caused the "drunkometer" to give a high
reading. He was riding a motorycyle home after performing for
three hours in Golden Gate Park.
.
Soooo.... during his trial at San Francisco's Hall of Justice,
his legal person requested the Judge and Jury come outside...
where Maskel performed his "act".... (this was on CNN).... then
they went inside, hooked him up to the Breathaliser Machine and
the reading was so HIGH it BLEW THE MACHINE UP !!!!!

Hello Stan,
Concerning the Fugitive coins, have you ever tried to do this
with all foreign coins? Some people might be a little too
conversant with sizes of american coins(at least in the states).
With all foreign coins, I think the change that they might notice
that the do not
hold the same coins as you showed them before will be much less.

That's a GREAT IDEA re: the slick surface on the back of the close-up
table. As you know I use crap table wool on the flip side just to
finish em out beautifully. Would it have to be formica (I have a
thing about using pressed paper and plastics)? Could it just be a
slick finished wood underside. I'm not a dice stacker so don't
really know what exactly you need. I'd been thinking about using
some walnut burl veneer on flip sides for a delux thing. Would the
little "smokestack" feet get in the way? In a few days we can TALK
ABOUT THIS STUFF IN PERSON. Really looking 4ward. Mucho gusto.

Hmmm... I think you were around when I did my report of the orgy at the
muses' senior prom. Faith, of course, was not there, but there is a
vague similarity to that tale. Frogs could easily handle the locusts,
which is a matter that caused at least one major mage some problems.
In a very famous ten act production show, he had to get the frogs off
stage six acts before he did the locust production. You will no doubt
recall that this show got rave reviews and that one of the dance
numbers gave rise to the famous Faro Shuffle (originally named the
Pharaon Shuffle). How's that for a tale to go with your morning
coffee?

Ordering something pre-publication often means that there will be some
delays. You paid a lot less for that reason. But if the delay proves
to be much longer than expected the dealer should offer folks the
alternative of having their money returned.

I too am very glad I have a copy of TMWWE (I have the limited edition)
and have found it to be a most interesting, fascinating book. I was
amazed at the massive level of detail that was provided, at the work
that went into it, and found it compelling reading. I never really
regarded it as "proof" that Andrews was Erdnase and I'm glad that
someone as knowledgeable as T A took the time to review and comment on

The fifty-seventh set of MAGIC! messages - #18000 (September 7,
1991) to #18499 (September 11, 1991) - has been transferred to a
downloadable file. The file is named MAGIC-57.TXT. This means that
you can now go to the file area, download this file, and read the
fifty-seventh volume of messages off-line. For those who know how
to use the PKUNZIP system for uncompressing files, there is a
compressed version of this same file. It is called MAGIC-57.ZIP and
is less than 1/2 the size of the full-text version.

Not only will transferring these messages to a file make it easier
for you to obtain a complete set of them, but it will make the
search for new messages easier and faster.

Hmmmmm. What kind of stuff do you do in metal, Kevin? Do you do any

Swap was kinda so-so this time. None of the things I was looking for

get to the Magic Castle again. You might have seen my name listed as

saved a lot of low numbers for the paying group...the early regulars
only paid $25 to join. Now you can't have an evening there for anything

Great cover shot on M A G I C magazine this month. Did you read the
editorial. Stan Allen implied that he didn't know that his subtitle
came from THE SPHINX. If he had been paying closer attention to
MAGIC! he would have known as I was pointing this out several months
ago. I hope he was joking. It scares me to think that he is not as
grounded in the history of magic magazine publication as one would
imagine that a publisher should be. Was glad to see some work on
the key effect in Richie Kaufman's column this month and a welcome
departure from the usual card stuff. After last month's GENII (which
was the best yet) I can't wait to see what editor Dante comes up with
for October. Talk to you tomorrow. Bill Larsen was right.

You're right! Some folks think I'm a wunnerful person and others

Riverside, CA. During the 84 Olympics, Glo and I stayed at a Best
Western there on the main drag for almost two months that year and
really felt at home on the tree lined streets. Next time I come west
we'll have to get together for sure. I'll be there in LA tomorrow,
but only for 36 hours and am jammed up this time or would make a run
out to your city. What kind of welding are you doing? As a kid, my
cousin and I used a torch and coathanger wire to "braze" stuff
together since grandad wooden let us at the brass rods though between
grandad and dad, I learned a lot of shop lore and (hopefully) the
right way to do most things. My dad taught me about hot varnish
finishing and grandad about the zen of sanding wood properly.

Well, no def word yet, but I believe they will buy it as it is their
last chance to get hold of some of the historical 1774 property they
owned since they sold the land across the road to the state. I have
been practicing prayer and positive affirmation last few weeks and
many wonderful things have been happening. I asked for a sign from
the great spirit. I asfked to be shown a buyer on Friday and the
phone rang at 9am sharp Fri morn and it was the head of board of
trustees telling me they would take a vote on it. Don't see how they
can pass it up, especially with the Divine influences going on. As

The reason windex has been used sparingly on the monitor screen is that
the Amdek 300 series featured a nylon mesh over the screen to reduce
glare. Which also made it impossible to clean! You'll see the new
setup once the Argh! (tm - Biro) of the effort to transfer everything
that needs to be transferred is complete. It is as complex and

Re: FUGITIVE COINS

The routine for the Fugitive Coins is in the Roth Lecture notes and
probably his book as well. The effect is you show a quarter and a half
dollar. You give them both to the spectator to hold behind his back.
He brings out one coin in each fist and hands you the half. You say
how impossible it would be for you to make the coins trade places but
that is exactly what you show has happened. You open your hand to show
a quarter and spectator now holds the half. That's the bare bones of
it. You have the quarter and half in left hand and the 5 peso piece we
were talking about in earlier messages palmed in the right hand.
Shuttle pass of sorts dropping the half into the right hand and retain
the quarter in the left. Hand spectator the half and the larger 5 peso
piece. To him it feels like (Usually!) the quarter and half. He hands
you what he thinks is the half which is really the 5 peso piece.
Shuttle pass again from right to le keeping the 5 peso in the right
hand and holding the quarter which has been in your left all along out
in front (closed fist) for the big finish. There it is, no meat just
bones but you get the idea.
