Sorry, I just took my wife to Disneyland for our animaversery on the motorcycle, and I guess I got bikes on the brain. My voice is gone, so I had to use sign language (ASL) all day, and my wife doesn't unnerstand so good. Kind of frustrating, but kind of fun. I do arc and gas welding. I also use brass for brazing (I am, to this day, amazed at how strong brazing is) and use a turbo torch for soldering. Riverside is not so bad except that it is HOT and it is BROWN. Some one of these days whyn MY ship comes in, I'll move to either northern California, or Washington. I've never been to Tennesee, but am told that it is a beautiful, green place. One of my favorite performers lives there (I guess that narrows it down to the thousands). her name is Nanci Griffith. All these messages, and I've never asked what instrument(s) you play? Guess this cold is going to my brain, as I am rambling all over the place. Maybe it is because I'm writing this during "normal" hours, and I can only think after midnight. Enjoy! A couple of years back, I got home from a trip to New York, and the woman I was seeing at the time gave me tickets to a Everly Brothers concert. She seemed all sorts of pleased with herself. It was only later that I found out that Nanci Griffith was opening for the show! I got home from the show, and wrote her out a little ditty. I then found out that she was going to be at McCabes's guitar shop in Santa Monica the next night. I called, and they said they were SOLD OUT! I asked if I could bring a tape for her, and they said "Sure." I got there, and the guy said, "Why don't you wait in line, and see if anyone is willing to sell one of their tickets?" So I did. While I was in line, three people came through asking everyone for tickets. There were none. At McCabe's they handle charges interestingly. They go through the line, and hand out the tickets, while you are in line. After this procedure, I went through line and asked if anyone had a ticket to sell. One guy said "Sure." I said "How much?" He said, "Well, I paid 6 dollars for it, so if you have 6 dollars..." I told him that I thought he should make a little off of the transaction, but he was adament. I got inside (general admission) and found a single chair right at the front row. After the concer (GREAT!) I gave her the tape, and had a fairly lengthy chat. Life can be good! Enjoy! I am not prepared to acknowledge that it is David's. But, if you want to up the bid you must do so in increments of $50,000. And you must bring bank certified checks for 10% to the court. So you have to have a check for $225,000 in your hands and additional $5,000 checks ready so that each time the bid is upped you can hand one over. In theory, if two bidders wanted to fight it out, the one who had one additional $50,000 certified check in his hands would win. Now I haven't always been known around here as being particularly kind to Max, so let me give my summmary up front - MAX KILLED, Max was superb! The set began with the usual comedy club hacks - the M.C. and the opener were both what one would expect with lines like "Why should the men always have to put the seat down? Why can't the women learn to put it up?" Yeah, real talent. Then Max was introduced. When he first arrived on stage, there were some titters over his outre appearance. But the moment Max took the mic, he was totally in control. I think he could have had the audience pretending to be pigeons and eating cracked corn out of the palm of his hand. Why? Timing and delivery. From the moment he began to speak, the audience knew that they weren't watching one more moron in a t-shirt (Max wore a black suit with just enough touches about it - pleated sleeves, etc. - to moderate the otherwise severe appearance of the black). Throughout his performance the crowd around me was gasping in awe and saying things like "I don't believe it!." Loud sustained applause were very frequent, and, at the close, the audience went BANANAS. There were even fans posing with Max after the show! Yeah, he did good stuff, but, more than that, he brought the audience UP to his level (well, OK, not to his level, but to a cut above where they were used to being). And it was Max and a lot of preparation and a lot of attention to detail that made it happen. Sure, there were a couple of bits that exploited some embarrasement of audience members, but they were always thanked and always given a warm round of applause. And Max also made sure that everyone connected with the show - from servers to managers - got recognized as well. Afterwards I heard people asking each other how he did things, and some of 'em offering explainations - "When the girl had her knuckles on his back, he could feel her signalling him" - but I'm sure that the "how did he do it" conversations continued into the cars and as more recall was amassed the theories probably fell apart. So, if anyone in the Los Angeles area wants to see a great show for a few bucks ($7.50 plus 2 drink minimum), head for the Ice House in Pasadena next Sunday (October 13, 1991) and see Max at his last scheduled performance in this series. Oh, you have to make reservations first - 818-577-1894. Msg #22069 Dated 5:48:41 10-07-91 22037 <--> 22071 From: TABBY CRABB To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: OFF-LINE Oh yeah. It's not me, it's that IMP. Speaking of robbing banks, I used to work with a guy - his friends called him "Roach" - (bass player) who at age 17 drove the getaway car in a bank job down in Texas. He said he had the shortest crime career ever. They made it 1 1/2 blocks down the street before JL (John Law) bagged them. He did three years in Huntsville Prison before he got parolled. I discovered that when I was playing music all the time I got so wrapped up in it to take care of business so when I became a music business person I played less and businessed more. Does that make sense? Dated Dec. 12, 1975. It was from Spina in response to an editorial I wrote about Tannen's (Spina owner) stealing material from Ken Brooke. . Dear Pete: Just received your PETE'S LEAFLET dated Dec. 1st, 1975 and normally would not take the time to write. However, I feel that your insinuation about Tannen's Inc. stealing items like Beam Shot, Benjamin, Silver Stick and the Head Zopper are incorrect. I would like to set you straight but do not want to start a controversy. At first I thought you were a friend of mine and am therefore taking the time to write you regarding this. As you know Beam Shot or now called Lazar Beam is manufactured by a magic firm in Pennsylvania as is Benjamin. As to Finn Jon's Silver Stick as sold to Ken Brookes, (SIC) we have written permission from the inventor in Germany to sell his floating flute. As to the Head Zopper, I have been in touch with Jack Huges and have also explained to him that this is being made by a firm in New Jersey and I am just distributing same. I think you fail to understand that as being the largest magic dealer in the business and advertiser, we must carry and sell anything offered to us. If we do not carry it, another dealer will carry it and in as much as we advertise more frequently than most dealers, we receive the brunt of all this criticism. Personally the fact that you say Johnny Thompson, Don Allen and you are mad, really does not enter into this picture as neither of you are dealers nor have any of your effects been stolen. I have Johnny Thompson's methods of producing doves of several different gimmicks that he has given me personally and have never released these to the public as these are not mine to sell but rest assured if someone came in with an item like Johnny's or yours for sale, I would purchase it and sell it; simple as that. We are in business, we do asdvertising only in the trade papers not to the public and we feel we are doing a service to the magicians brining these effects to them. Pete, I do not even expect a reply just want you to know how I fee I feel. Best regards (signed) Tony Spina. End letter. So you can just read this and see what people are up against. I won't even try to comment on some of the points... they are so obvious. Looking back now, I never thought about it, but this sounds much like a "business" called "fencing".... From conversations here on the board I have grown to respect his encyclopedic knowledge of magic. I have read several of his books and was impressed with their thoroughness and attention to detail. I had seen his video Mind Games and found it to be quite entertaining. I have seen him on TV spots and was only mildly impressed. I saw his spot at the castle either last year or the year before, and thought it was OK, but not overpowering. . I arrived at the Ice House sunday night expecting an OK performance, but was completely blown away - not just by his obvious technical skill, but more by his stage presence and complete command of the entire house. The subtle gestures and eye movements were truly a work of art. In the past I have felt that Max was a bit too critical of others performance, but after seeing him perform for a solid 1 1/2 hours, I can see that he has earned the right to be critical of any act that does not measure up to the obviously high standards he expects of performance. . I think Charlie Randall suggested hiding the extra(large)coin with the Kaps subtlety, so that there is less chance of the spectator suspecting an extra coin. Have you ever considered to turn around the concept of the trick? I mean instead of the extra coin being the largest, to have the extra coin to be the smallest? This way you can hide it in the beginning of the trick underneath the other coins, and so show the hands really empty. Also, when the spectator holds two coins, you will be palming the largest one, personally I find it easier to pal a large coin than a small one. May be you find that easier as well. Foreign coins do not have to be suspicious and can actually add some interest, also it may give a possibility for patter and plot. The only problem I can foresee with foreign coins is that you will have more difficulty with driving home the transposition, since the coins are not well known. My suggestion therefore is to use copper and silver coins! The largest coin is for instance silver and the middle and the smallest(the extra!)coin is copper. In the trick you end up with giving both copper coins to the spectator, and keeping the large silver one palmed. Then you ask the spectator;"Hand me the copper one, the smallest of the two". Because of the fact that the spectator thinks he holds a copper and a silver this instruction will not be too difficult. Since the coins are not very well known, you can may be give a more than fleeting glimpse of the coin which is given to you. This coin you change to the silver while asking the spectator wether he can feel his coin shrink. Many countrys have coins with virtually the same design, although of different size. This will help to disguise the secret when the smallest copper coin has to parade for the slightly larger copper coin. --- * Origin: MAGIC!-NL, Home of the wizards, +31-23-388725 (2:0/0) --- Msg #22187 Dated 23:29:39 10-07-91 22080 <--> 22230 From: KEVIN E CURTIN To: PETE BIRO (X) Re: HUSWOY...YOWSUH SPELT BAC It isn't a shopping mall yet! If "slow and steady wins the race", Stan has a winner on his hands. I'm sorry, but to me, it has all the hard hitting impact of an airline's In-Flight magazine. I was held in suspense by the ever controversial Disneyland Haunted Mansion ride, and the retrospective of Virgil's 1940's World Tour. Michael Weber wears his "white hat" as he reviews new products with such critical comments as: "Highly recommended"(twice), "Recommended reading", "...well produced...". His only negative comment was a hearty "mediocre". Eugene Burger sums it up best in the Letters column : "Come on, Michael, if you want to do realistic reviews, get with it! Sharpen your sword!" An editorial even appears condemning "reviewers" as not being "critics", overlooking minor faults in favor of "...doling out the milk of human kindness..." On the plus side, Stan is getting better, only having SIX pages of "card crap" instead of the eight in the first issue. (quoting another disappointed reader) The strongest writing still comes from Max Maven's "Parallax" column. The most worthwhile reading is still the "Inside Magic" that Stan is famous for, and I did enjoy the article on David Williamson. Stan concludes another blockbuster issue with a photo of our ever popular "Super Pig" with a comment that two Castle members may be interested in buying it. He doesn't say, however what they wanted to do with it after they got their hands on it. I still propose a few pounds of C4 in strategic spots will do wonders. And, I must say, I think it's humming along well. The second issue's refined a few things. Layout and style are excellent, as is the quality of the writing. What I like about it is the lack of sub-standard filler -- it's not a thick magazine, but what's in there is well-done. It's easy to navigate, and is pleasing to the eye. Review and magic sections are super-excellent. Concur? It's impossible to disagree with your opinions per se, but let me ask you this -- COMPARED TO WHAT? All your observations are ones that are true of the other magazines in the field: overly puffy reviews; an excess of card material; acking in "hard hitting impact." Then, upon re-reading you review, I found it impossible to determine exactly what you didn't like about M A G I C. Obviously something about it bugs you -- and I've read negative remarks from others. Which, I guess really brings us to: TAB'S B'DAY BASH - DAY 2 Tonite Tab joined a quiet family dinner with a couple of friends. The Tabman knocked Nathan off his seat - quite literally - when he handed him a custom made Nathan size CONJURERS WOODWORKS WAND, walnut with brass tips. Nathan just kept going "OH! OH! OH!" and finnaly got out "THANK YOU, TABMAN!" After dinner the entire cast of servers and managers surrounded the table to sing Happy Birthday, in Spanish, to the Tabman -- only Tab had excused himself! So everyone regrouped and did "take two" when he returned to the table. A most special dinner made exceedingly pleasant by the guests who joined us. Then back to the Castle along with JERRY BURTON. An evening of discussion at the upstairs bar. Burton rigged the place with Biowire and had all sorts of special effects going. Now we are at two workstations here at Techy Heaven - Tab is on the Master Console and I'm on a remote node. Tomorrow it is up at dawn to take Nathan to school and then off for Vegas. These days, outside of Copperfield and Las Vegas, it's a rare opportunity to see a magician (or psychic comedian, if you will) perform for real people in a real situation (i.e. not at the Magic Castle or at a convention). For those of us who couldn't attend, it would be nice if you who did could pass on a _rough_ idea of just what it was that Max did. Please don't compromise Max in this. I realize this is a hard thing to do and, quite frankly, is almost never done in magic reviews. There is the "know-it-all" approach ("Well, he came out and did Brainwave and then Mental Epic and then Koran's Medallion and . . ."), and there is the videotape equivalent of reporting so much that one tips all the performer's lines, etc. I also realize that personality plays a far more important role than does individual effects. Still -- none of the reviews to date has given an inkling of what Max did. It might be nice, if you find it possible, to give a general idea of what went on, from how a layman might have perceived it, without going so far as let the unscrupulous reconstruct routines for their own use. Basically I'm curious as to what a mentalist would choose to fill 1.5 hours with. For example, was there a half hour of message reading? Any hypnosis? Any mediumistic effects? Hmmm. Perhaps Max himself is the only one who should be authorized to respond to this query. Msg #22344 Dated 22:39:52 10-09-91 22287 <--> 22345 From: KEVIN E CURTIN To: TABBY CRABB (X) Re: MO MOJO!!!!! I have an internal CD ROM that is meant to go with my machine. I had a different 386 system a while back that had so many different drivers (One is needed for the CD drive) that I was messed up with regular ram. Right now, my CD drive is designated as the D: drive, and all I have to do is treat it like another disk drive. It is extemely easy to use, and very convient to have CD ROM access. The price is also down to the $200 to $400 range, which makes it somewhat affordable. But like buying a stereo CD Player, the expense is not the drive, but the CDs that go with it. Maybe Max SHOULD be the only one to comment. If he doesn't mind I will go ahead and give you more details. One thing I can say though is that if another performer were to take Max's show and do it line for line, trick for trick, he would NOT have the same impact nor receive as much positive response from the audience. The way Max looks, speaks, his timing, the way he carries himself, etc. is a very large part of what makes his show so great aside from the effects themselves. It just occured to me that Max could probably make an entertaining show out of a "Mr. Magician" magic set found in any toy store! I can't place enough emphasis on how great his showmanship and the performance aspect of his show is. Msg #22368 Dated 20:16:26 10-10-91 22366 <--> 22378 From: STAN LAKE To: MAX MAVEN (X) Re: MAX MAVEN AT ICE HOUSE OK Max, I'll relate to the best of my recollection what the effects are in your show presently running at the Ice House. Without getting in to the presentational aspects this will be very dry reading. A spectator who remained seated names a card. Max fans the deck back outwards and runs his finger along the cards until she says stop. She stops him on the card she named. A spectator briefly shuffles and has a free choice of a card which he retains possession of. A second spectator peeks at a card and then shuffles the deck. Max looks through the deck once and announces the second spectators card is a certain number from the top of the deck. Cards are counted and there it is. Max then announces in that same single look through the deck he knows which single card is missing and announces it. Another spectator comes up and takes 5 cards from the deck. Max stands at the foot of the stage facing the audience and has his female volunteer (at least in the show I saw it was a female!) stand very close behind him and just scan over the 5 cards. From the audiences perspective it looked like Max not only correctly read her mind as to what the cards were but also which one she was merely looking at each time. A prediction sealed in an envelope was given to a man to hold while Max started to page through a tabloid paper until a spectator stopped him. He ripped out the page and continued to rip the page in half and half again always throwing away the part the spectator didn't want. This continued until there was only a small bit left with one word. Something like 50,000 words in the tabloid and she ended up with that one. It was found to match the prediction written in the envelope held from before the start of the trick. Two more ladies with handbags were asked to come up and he instructed them to place a half dollar over each eye socket and seal them down with wide strips of tape. He then proceeded to describe items the spectators took from their handbags. He next had one of the ladies draw a design on a piece of stiff paper and had the paper placed face down on a mans lap in the audience. He correctly reproduced the drawing on another piece of paper. To the best of my recollection (which isn't all that swell after a few drinks) that was the content of the show I saw a couple of weeks ago. If I didn't have relatives coming to visit us from out of town with their entourage of children I would be seeing him again this Sunday. If anybody hasn't seen him that is in the area you only have one more night this coming Sunday the 19th to catch him at the Ice House in Pasadena. Yes, I guess I did come across a little too harsh, but on rereading my own message, I still tend to agree with my first impressions. RE: Compared to what? I'll have to fill you in a little. Before I even heard of Genii, Linking Ring, etc., my first major magic buy was a nearly complete original set of Jinx. Reading the somewhat strong opinions of Anneman made me feel like this was what real writing should be like. Tell it like it is, or at least how the writer perceives it to be, good or bad. I guess I'm just getting tired of most of the reviewers nowadays praising everything they see. As the editorial in M A G I C even stated, this is a disservice to those of us that rely on honest opinions to guide us on whether or not we should invest our own hard earned money. If I bought everything the "reviewers" recommended, I wouldn't have any money left for food or rent! It just seemed that when the magazine itself has to express such an opinion , and it hits so close to home, something's just not right. As I quoted, Burger even admonishes Weber to "sharpen his sword". I just received this month's Genii, and even though nearly all the reviews were again all positive, at least I felt like they gave me a truer feel of what I would be getting for my money. Dante is doing a great job turning around his magazine and I just hope Stan can truly be an "independent" magazine and not worry quite so much about possibly hurting someone's feelings. As far as production quality and content of the articles, I have no complaint. It's a beautifully made piece, as are most other "In-Flight" magazines I've read. It's very pleasing to the eye, careful not to offend anyone. Does that make sense? I may have some trouble explaining it all clearly. Let's talk some more, maybe I can clarify further. Pretty much ALL the major trade mags that I can think of out there -- cars, stereo, etc., seem to have the same kind of gentle tone when it comes to reviewing products made my people who are paying for the ads! I think, however, that Genii is full of just as much puffery -- and if there's a difference, it's a subtle one. Genii is also filled with a lot of stuff that is basically fraternal, and while this does no one any harm, it is stuff that I don't care about, and thus have to wade through. But this is admittedly a small, perhaps unimportant point. My overwhelming feeling about M A G I C is happiness -- because there's another player in the game. I really do think it means more for us. And I don't think TOO many people are going to cancel GENII and only get M A G I C -- although I may be wrong. More likely in my mind is that people will do what I did -- find another $30 a year, and just get them both! And whatever competition IS generated will be good for both mags. This I truly believe. What I like about M A G I C is its glossiness -- and I don't mean this to mean facile or shallow -- I mean it is clearly and sparingly presented. Everything in it is quality. I hope it stays around a long time. Msg #22381 Dated 7:36:59 10-11-91 22368 <--> 22410 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: STAN LAKE (X) Re: MAX MAVEN AT ICE HOUSE Stan - You're doin' good! Posting lots of stuff lately. I have one little technical problem with your word processor created stuff - one which I am also going to try to work on from my end, but that maybe you can look at from yours as well - your word processor is throwing the deadly End of File character into the message as the last character you send. In the case of the message this is appended to, it occurs right after the period after "Pasadena." on the last line. I don't know if you have any way to surpress the EOF, but, if you do, it would help! That character hits other people's word processors and tells it that the file is finished! It is suggested that you do NOT attempt long downloads for the next few hours and that you make note of the "Last msg you read" pointer in the Message Statistics area in the event of an abrupt call termination. It is our policy NOT to use auxilliary power in the event of a power failure during a thunderstorm. This is necessary because we cannot protect the telephone lines when using auxilliary power. Msg #22445 Dated 23:57:50 10-11-91 -> 22481 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: ALL Re: MAGIC! III The weather has calmed a bit, so I have taken this opportunity to install the new hardware and software. You should find the system much faster and much more responsive. There are some new items that you will want to be aware of: 1) Because of the higher speed and the improved use of buffers you may notice some additional lines of information between the time you press Ctrl-K (as you might do to bypass the Welcome Screen) and the time that the data actually stops flowing. 2) The automatic mail check (at login) and the commands !, !!, and !!! have been enhanced to give you the opportunity to read the reported messages. If you respond to the "Read these messages now?" prompt with Y for Yes or by pressing the ENTER key, then the message read function will automatically present these messages to you. This will allow you to see messages addressed to you, and to reply to those messages, before you see other messages that are a part of the general conversation. The automatic mail check is still controlled by the MA options on the User Menu (U from the Main Menu). Members who typically read all public messages can use the MA command to turn off the automatic check. If you are using a logon script, you may need to modify it to take advantage of this new feature. Or you can go to the User Menu and turn the automatic mail check off. 3) The Forward and Backward commands in the Message Read sub-menu have been enhanced to reflect the difference between "expert" and "non- expert" users when either Forward or Back is used and there is no message that meets the request. Expert users will, as before, receive a message that no forward or backward message exists and the command prompt will be redisplayed. The last message read remains the current message, but to redisplay it an expert user must type L for List. Non-expert users will receive also receive the message that no forward or backward message exists, but the current message will be redisplayed on the screen. 4) The calculation of file download time for cases where the modem to host speed differs from the modem to modem speed has been corrected. This problem was especially noticeable when the modem to host speed was above 9600 bps. This calculation still does not attempt to factor in possible effective speed increases due to compression. 5) Some timeout code has been added to circumvent a very nasty problem caused by the PPI 9600SA modem, in which it goes on-hook with CD and DSR high and CTS low. When this occurs, the modem must be reset manually to clear this condition. Since this combination of signals is quite normal when the modem is on-line and has invoked hardware flow control because its output buffer is full, only an arbitrary timeout value can detect the problem. Unfortunately, this means that under certain error recovery cases, or when the remote user has used local flow control at the user end in order to be able to read something, the timeout may trigger. Several people have worked long and hard to bring this latest release of MAGIC! and the new hardware on-line. I hope that you will find the new features, the new speed, and the new performance to be of significant value. If you have any comments, questions, or problem reports, please leave a message for me. Msg #22446 Dated 0:25:08 10-12-91 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: ALL Re: MY LANCE BURTON SHOW REPO OK, we've stalled you long enough! Here's my report on the Lance Burton Show at the Hacienda. Lance is a wonderful guy and he has made a very gutsy career move in leaving a successful show, of which he was only one member, and starting his own show. He has done a wonderful job and has put together a number of terrific effects for the new show. The show we saw, the second one of the evening, was Lance's 3-month anniversary show and it was very good. But there are still parts that are under test and still some parts that are being changed. For example, during the first month Lance had a "white turkey" bit that was a spoof on Sigfried and Roy. In conversation with MAGIC! members he said that it went well for the first month because he was largely working for members of the magic community (the S.A.M. convention was in town and then there were a lot of magicians coming to see the show) but that when all the magicians left, it bombed with the lay audiences, so it is gone. He is still working on the show and still making changes. This means that the show has not quite come together yet and, frankly, that shows. There are portions, probably in newer bits, where Lance's patter is a bit stiff, where he seems nervous. There are still a few slips with lighting and staging too. But Lance is working hard on these things and the show is getting better day by day. My personal feeling is that Lance has yet to feel good about the show - he has yet to feel that he owns it. But when he does - when the changes are finished - and when Lance steps on stage and knows that he has a killer, when he feels fully comfortable with it, then watch out World! Just what I had in mind, and it really makes me wish I could have seen the show. I find it exciting that Max did numerous standup things with playing cards. I like card stuff myself -- when done entertainingly -- and feel that cards often get a bum rap from magicians and especially from mentalists. (There is a vocal contingent of mentalists who feel one MUST use Tarot cards rather than normal playing cards. I never bought their arguments.) Others who do standup with cards well? Ricky Jay, of course. But another that sticks out for me, even though I saw him do only a brief stint at a Desert Magic Seminar a couple of years ago, is Geno Munari. I envy you guys who are going to get to see his parlour act at the Castle, and hope you will be kind enough to the rest of us to provide a similar review. ** Getting back to Max, here's a question for Max and any other psychics on Magic! I too, like card magic and even a so-so trick can look like a miracle with the right presentation. Here's a new theory on the Thomas-Hill controversy. If a powerful special interest group or groups was nuts enough they could have put Ms. Hill under and with a combination of Drugs, Hypnosis and a bit of pain, given her this whole story as a post hypnotic suggestion. Some of her testimony was said to be almost word for word out of the script from the Exorcist movie and she doesn't seem to express a level of emotion you would expect from someone recounting such incidents. It's been a long time since we've seen each other -- you really DO have to drop by the shop soon! I would LOVE to attend and meet Geno, but I am getting married a few days later, and the errands and last-minute things are already suffocating. Please give my regards to everyone! I guess that, if they wanted to, people could turn on the color menus and stuff... You need lunch that day anyway, and you will kick yourself forever after for not having lunch with Geno Munari, whereas a Wedding is, well, just a wedding. Msg #22499 Dated 1:17:00 10-13-91 -> 22537 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: ALL Re: CASTLE SHOWS Just got back from an evening at the Castle and thought I would report in - JOYCE BECK was BRILLIANT in close-up. Lots of good stuff and very well done. Poor kid was in the middle of a BILL SWITCH when the lights went out! Still, she carried off an excellent show. Palace this evening featured JEFF HOBSON as M.C., PETRICK AND MIA, and THE MALLOYS. I still don't like Hobson's choice of material - both the gay/bisexual bits and the Chinese bits come across to me as rude and insensitive - but he really is a brilliant, talented performer with great timing, delivery, and incredibly good body language. Frankly, I'm not so sure he is a good choice as an M.C. because he overpowers the acts - which I don't think an M.C. should do - but, then again, in this case, it was easy. Petrick and Mia were Petrick and Mia. The Malloys were a cute couple with some cute ideas, but I really think you should spend more than an hour from the time you buy your props to the time you do the show. CAROL ROY fans will be glad to know that she is recovering well. She is down to a bandage on her knee and is getting around just fine. She should be fully recovered in the not too distant future. ===END OF MAGIC-65===
