I have arrived in LA, and I guess I will give you guys a description
of my travels, much like you did on the Vegas junket. I will say
that I am slightly shocked at the freeway driving, to say the least.
I feel like wrong way Corrigan.
I love the nail trick Pete, I had it on my forehead while driving and
dopping out the moves.......this trick is great.
Just got up and will be going to Mrina Del Rey for lunch, then off to
Burbank and Warners.

Don't worry too much about the picture, Geno. If the guys have it,

Thanks, Geno. Jim Sisti is looking for a supplier for a fairly large

Just a note to say hi. Haven't been on board lately.....That's an
under statement. I work with these machines (computers) and get tired

which leaves little time for my family. Hence time is gone before I
know it. Have thought of you all however.

Re: GOOD LUCK
Geno,
Sorry -- we won't get to meet next week as I am stuck
out here in Indiana, but all best wishes on your Magic
Castle engagement. Is it fair to announce, by the way,
that you beat us all to Biro's copy of the Martin Nash
book? The last time I saw Martin work was a year ago
September. He was doing the overflow crowds in the
Wine Cellar. These days, it seems that most advise
magicians to throw a lot of showbiz into their acts,
with all sorts of production values, etc. It also
seems that the only way to get booked anywhere is as a
comedian (or comic-magician, etc.). In contrast,
Martin worked very quietly, didn't do anything overtly
comedic (except for the laughs born of astonishment),
and absolutely thrilled the Wine Cellar audience with
some very pure card magic. It was this performance
that renewed my interest in his work. According to a
recent conversation with Stephen Minch, all the Martin
Nash books written by Stephen are still in print.
*
Again, have a great week. If you get the chance, ask
T.A. Waters to show you the new library. It's
impressive.

Ah! To turn on the color menus, you go to the User Menu (Type U and
press ENTER from the Main Menu) and pick ANSI Graphics ON and turn
EXTENDED GRAPHICS ON. Poof! You should have color! From that same
menu, you can also change your mail reading options, if you don't like
getting a list of messages for you up front, eliminate the menus
altogether if you know them by heart (or have them printed on a little
piece of paper attached to your monitor) by turning EXPERT MODE ON, and
a few other nice things.

Re: GOOD LUCK
I spoke briefly with Martin last night and just caught the end of his
act downstairs (he said he wasn't going to do it that night and then
changed his mind). I agree with you that watching him work is a
pleasure. There is, of course, some good comedy (some of it even
connected with magic) around, but my contention has always been that a
lot of "comedy" is simply a cheap way to overcome deficits in one's
performance. As you mentioned, however, if you can fit enough cheap
comedy into your act (enough of it and you won't even need an act!) you
can always earn a living at a comedy club.

Re: CASTLE SHOWS
I saw the Castle show last week also and I pretty much agree with your
review. Joycee Beck is always a pleasure to watch. A bubbly,
vivacious performer who is one of the best female card handlers I've
seen at the Castle. (She beats A LOT of the guys too!)
Petrick and Mia have always been something of a puzzle to me.
Apparently they travel the world with their act but the two times I
have seen it I have always thought it to be mediocre on impact although
I guess you can give them points on originality. Mia waltzes around
like an overanimated gameshow hostess. Petrick reminds me of cold
oatmeal- kind of bland. Both of them mouth and whisper words although
not a sound is spoken. I don't know, maybe I saw them on a couple of
bad nights. The Doug and Linda Malloy have been doing pretty much the
same act all three times I have seen them over the past year. So I
don't know what you mean about doing the tricks an hour after they get
them. They have made a few subtle changes for the better but all in
all I wouldn't recommend going out of ones way to see them.
I think Hobson is one of the best MC's entertainment wise I have seen
anywhere. I know what you mean about overpowering the other acts.
It was that way at the Day of Magic show he hosted. The audience loved
his bits and when the main act had technical difficulties that kept
them off stage people were chanting HOBSON! HOBSON! They wanted him
back and didn't care much if the main performers came back or no
Didn't get a chance to see the parlour shows or late close up. Did
you? I'm looking forward to seeing Geno Munari soon. Wish I didn't
have guests due any minute or I'd be at the Ice House to see Max again!

Re: CASTLE SHOWS
If my wife had not had to go out of town on business today we
DEFINITELY would have been at the Ice House for Max's show!
The Malloy's have a cute premise that could be very clever - the kids
with the toys. I think that if it were done well it would be very
entertaining and very refreshing, although Linda's portrayal of a child
is far better than Doug's. Nonetheless, with a little work, they could
really have something. But really, they do the effects like they've
never tried them - I had visions of Doug in the subtrunk reading the
directions! And of Linda doing her hair during her costume change.
Too slow for the premise of a sub-trunk. Also, there is not a lot of
variety - two transpositions do not make a show. In addition to a good
premise, there IS another refreshing aspect to their show - the magic
(and the role of the magician) is very definitely shared. They appear
to have potential, but the act needs considerable rework and a lot more
thought and practice.

Re: PRACTICE
Mental training is good. Anything you can do to enhance such is
excellent. However. NOTHING BEATS DOING IT WITH STRANGERS WATCHING.
Try the Bobo switch next time you go through a toll booth. You start
with the wrong amount showing but hand the taker the right change.
.
Not kidding. This is real heat. I used to take the bus to school
with cards and coins palmed, do change overs, etc. I once wore a
sixth finger to school one day. Funny, some guy -- who was all the
way across the street yelled to me, "Hey, what's wrong with your
hand!" (<--------true story)...
.
Another important rehearsal technique... no matter what... get into
full wardrobe... the actions often change when you are dressed up.
Especially in getting things from your pockets. Watch a major star
do a TV Commercial where they, say, take out an envelope from the
inner coat pocket. THEY NEVER LOOK AT IT, or search for it. Often
it isn't in the pocket at all, but clipped in perfect grip position.
.
The real TRICK of the ages... how do you think the two tablets
always fall out perfectly from the Alka Seltzer pack? They are
already out and on the back! This is stuff magi should study. The
little tiny details that make it like YOU ARE AN EXPERT AT HANDLING
YOUR PROPS... NOT ONLY GOOD AT THE MAGIC PART.
.
A trick I developed for language study (altho I flunked, my ex wife
got an A) (she was who I devised the method for) was to take the
language tapes you buy and throw them out. I made special tapes with
LONG PAUSES inbetween phrases. That way you could go over them in
your mind and repeat them. On the expensive tapes they went from
one word to the next with no time between each word to remember the
one you just heard. You got to the next one before you practiced
the first. In magic, patter, whatever, give yourself space to brain
train between items...

Re: MAGIC! CHALLENGE
OK, folks, here is something to get your brain working - I have a
proposed effect - your job is to come up with a method. I've checked
with one of our on-line experts and he says it is unique enough to
qualify as a new effect and that it is possible. So here it is:
You have a chain (say the type that used to be used for light pulls)
fastened into a loop. On it are six poker chips. Each chip has a hole
in it and the chain runs through the holes. Each chip is a different
color. You also have six matching chips that are loose. You place the
six loose chips in a line on the table and place the chain with
attached chips back into your pocket. The spectator points to one of
the chips. You instantly remove the chain from your pocket and that
chip is MISSING! You then produce the matching chip, now loose, from
your pocket.
Now here's the bit - all solutions will become the property of MAGIC!
The individual who first posts the selected method will win up to 10% of
the net profit from the sale of the effect during the first year of
active marketing if it is marketed. MAGIC! will use the rest for the
continued support of the system. If MAGIC! does not market the effect
within one year, then all rights in it will be granted to the
individual who first posts the selected method. Selection of a method
will be by the sole judgement of MAGIC! and the Sysop and the decision
will be final. The initial description of the effect is to be
considered proprietary with all rights reserved. No liability is
expressed or implied by this contest nor is assumed by MAGIC! or its
owners or operators. Additional rules may be applied during the
contest.
There is no deadline for this contest, but the first selected method
will be declared the winner. GO FOR IT!

OK, I got it. The chips are, in fact, Chips Ahoy "cookies".... you
have a trained (I have several) Rat in your pocket. When the spec-
tator selects a colored Chip(?) -- the Rat, thanks to a special
viewing port sewn into my coat... sees the selected Chip, then
EATS the one off the chain. The duplicate (yes, unfortunately,
there is another...) is then produced from inside a sealed envelope
that was inside a pat of butter.

Re: MULHOLLAND PT. 2
It has been a slow and confusing morning so far. I'm alone in the
chambers of Judge Vincent P. Zurzolo, waiting for the Mulholland
hearing to get underway. We were originally scheduled to begin with
a series of motions regarding approval of the sale. Then we were
told the hearing was changed to 10 a.m., then back to 9 a.m., and
now its 9:20 a.m.
John Gaughan and Jim Steinmeyer just arrived. This could get very
interesting!
9:30 a.m. - David Copperfield just arrived and we're sitting around
discussing MAGIC!
9:47 a.m. - Lots of dudes with lots of black briefcases just
arrived. I don't know 'em, but it would appear that the seating
area back here is beginning to polarize and conversations are
becomming more whispered. Assume it could be "the French."
9:50 a.m. - Ricky Jay just arrived. Someone asked, "Did you bring
some cards?" "Hell, yeah," he said, "when you feel your life
threatened, you always bring some cards."
9:55 a.m. - Judge Zurzolo conviened the court, but not all the
attorneys were here, so he adjourned until 10:00 and went back into
his chambers.
10:00 a.m. - Catherine Warwick just arrived. There is some small
hitch in the deal among the creditors, but it looks like the sale
may go thru. And it looks like the likly buyer will be David! Ms.
Warwick just asked if there are other bidders present and no-one
moved. Of course, they don' have to yet, and there could still be
some surprises.
10:09 a.m. - The various attorneys for the various trustees are
introducing themselves. The first motion is to approve the sale.
There is some discussion, the trustees have some wrangling going on
over the allocation of the money, but does not object to the sale.
The Judge is attempting to get acceptance for going ahead with the
sale, with the allocation to be made later. This would clear the way
for the sale to go forward. The Trustees and the RTC Apparently
some of the wrangling is over the RTC's costs of $650,000 for
maintaining the collection during the period it has been in their
custody and this is a matter of some contention. But it appears
likely that the discussion of allocation will be taken up at a later
time.
The Judge has said that there is a SINGLE offer and has asked if
there are any other buyers present. NO-ONE has moved! If they can
get through this opening discussion, it looks like Mr. Copperfield
is about to own a collection!
The various creditors and the RTC counsel have gone outside for a
conference. Meanwhile Ken Klausner's attorney has had some
discussion with the judge regarding the payment of some expenses.
He has been asked to resubmit the statement of the expenses,
although payment of the expenses has appareently alread been agreed
to - it is a matter of how much. We have gone into a sort of
unannounced recess mode and the Judge has left the chamber.
10:33 a.m. - The creditors and the RTC attorney have returned to the
courtroom and are working over the agreement. They just asked David
to spell his name for them! Guess they want to get this stuff
right!
10:36 a.m. - Everyone has announced that "We're ready" and the Judge
has once again been sent for. Jim Steinmeyer and I seem to agree -
someone should have brought a deck of cards.
10:40 a.m. - The Trustees are joining in a motion to allow the sale
to go forward. They have agreed to attmpt to complete the
allocation issue at a later time. But the RTC wants the Order for
the Sale entered today and moved forward. Now they are discussing
Mr. Copperfield will remove the collection from the premises by the
end of the month. The attorneys for the creditors are now vebally
agreeing to join in the motion to go forward with the sale, with an
Order to be presented this afternoon.
They are now disussing the $70,000 per month that it takes to store
the collection. Now they are recapping the RTC's marketing efforts.
It seems everyone is in agreement again.
10:47 a.m. - The discussion is now surrounding the various
administrative and legal costs attached to the sale. The Judge has
allowed most of the fees and costs that the various entities are
asking for. He has disallowed a few speciic charges.
Now they are discussion the various tax problems connected to the
Ruban parnerships. They have set a date for the continuation of
this matter.
10:58 a.m - It is a DONE DEAL as far as the Court is concerned!
David Copperfield is the new owner of the Mulholland Collection! A
few things to be worked out, but these will be done by the attorneys
based on the agreements. Court is adjourned and everyone shakes
hands and congratulates David.

Tabman: How you been? Haven't talked with you in quite some time. I

for setting up CMOS, but it is old, from 1987. I have a b: drive for 3
1/2 in disks. I have been having a problem for quite a while reading
other peoples disks. For a long time I blamed it on a corrupted file,
or whatever. After examining things closely I have discovered that my
computer is reading the drive as a 1.2, not a 1.44. This is because the
setup program is so old that it doesn't have an option to select 1.44.
Do you have a disk mgt disk, or diagnostic disk that contains a later
version of setup of IBM? if so, could I get a copy of it? I'm having
some fits here. I don't need the disk, just the one file.

Re: HOUDINI?
You know, when I started this conversation it never dawned on me
that a stage name couldn't be used. I was just wondering if
Hardeen was joining or not. Apparently not. One of these days I'd
like to visit with him in more detail on his family history. I
have little personal doubt on his authenticity but I have the
feeling "The Houdini's" don't feel that way.
(The following is speculation following a brief conversation with
Hardeen. I hope supporting facts will follow)
It seems Theo's involvement with (Hardeens grandmother) was not
accepted by the family. I don't yet know why. The evidence I do
have shows a (copy of a) birth certificate of one Harry Houdini
Hardeen born to Theo Hardeen.
This was the father of my friend, also named Harry Houdini
Hardeen.(his friends call him Mike, or simply Hardeen)
Tired of explaining his last name as the "grand nephew of
Houdini" and of answering questions about Hardeen (Theo), he
recently legally rearranged his name. Since most people call him
Hardeen anyway, it simplified matters.
Again, I have little doubt of his authenticity, and either way,
he is a very nice person, whoever he is.

There are some indications that the collection will be made available

is not likely to be housed at the Castle, or even within Los Angeles.

Re: NEW MAGIC! FEATURES
Some of you who have been using the new mail read functions that
appear when you first sign on (if you have selected the option to
scan for personal mail and mail addressed to "ALL") may have noticed
that if you only read mail addressed to you, your message pointer
(the thing that tracks the number of the highest message you have
read) is NOT reset. On the other hand, if you use the new feature
to read mail of general interest, mail addressed to "ALL," then it
IS reset. I queried programming about this and got the response
that follows. I would like to know if anyone has serious feelings
about how this operates.
Re: CC-BBS POINTER UPDATE
I am sorry if I forgot to document it properly, but the effect you
mention was a deliberate design decision. The logic is as follows:
If I log on and see that I have unread personal mail, I may want to
read it immediately. I do not want my message pointer updated either
immediately or when I sign off because I may want to log back on when
I have more time and read either the general (i.e. to ALL) messages, or
respond no to the general messages and read all public messages with
R;*.
On the other hand, if I read all of the general messages from the
prompt, then I probably do not want to come back later and read all
public messages, which would include the general messages which I have
already seen.
But when I do come back, I certainly do not want to see the same
messages show up again. So, the pointer is updated.
Now when I say that the decision was deliberate, I do not necessarily
imply that I feel strongly about it, only that it was not an accidental
by product of the coding. I am open to arguements about why it should
be done differently, or -- if there seems to be merit on both sides --
new user option settings that will allow the user to decide.

Re: SETUP
A ROM upgrade is pretty straightforward. Basically, you get the new
ROMS, unplug your computer from the power line, open it up, locate the
old ROMS, remove them and replace them with the new ones. You will
then have to power up and redo your CMOS. It really isn't very
difficult if you are comfortable with digging into your computer. If
you are uncomfortable with that, then you can get someone to do it for
you. Generally, ROMs run about $ 80 from the manufacturer, but they
can be less if you can get a street price.
There may be some other ways around the problem - there are some
"driver" programs (software) that can be used to "fake" the proper type
of drive.
You might find out if there is a User Group in your area by calling a
couple of the local computer stores. If you go to the user group
meeting you may be able to find someone who can either help with the
ROMs or who has the software substitute. Or you can fly me out to your
place and I'll take a look at it.

Re: VEGAS!
Las Vegas Day 1
Good times with good friends. First was meeting at the Hacienda Hotel
coffee shop with David VanVranken, David Lichtman, Tabman, Pete Biro,
and Jerry Burton. Tabby and David L. had already eaten. Biro and I
feasted on the crab leg special. VanVranken and Burton sampled some of
the other delicacies. Talk was about Pete's photo assignment, what was
happening in LV in the next couple of days, and magic and MAGIC! and M
A G I C. After dinner a deck of cards appeared. Pete tutored the Frog
in the art of the perfect faro. He showed us all the stumble force. The
highlight of the table session was Biro's Impossible Card Trick. A
card was selected, then cut by me into the deck. An indifferent card
was placed on the table about 6 inches from the squared, tabled deck.
This card was flicked toward the deck with Biro's index finger. After
this card sticks in the deck the deck is fairly cut at that point and
the originally selected card is found at the cut. This was repeated
several times.
Then it was time for the Lance Burton Show. Thanks to Pete's contacts
and tip to the maitre'D the MAGIC! group was seated in the center
booth. These were the best seats in the house! Before Lance appeared on
stage a white streamer came to life in the darkened house. It flew
around stage and over the audience in a very eerie fashion. As the
music crescendowed the streamer flew to center stage. Had the lighting
cue been a little more on target, it would have appeared to transform
into Lance. Lance then did the bird act many of us saw at Desert Magic
last March. The set was a backround drop painted as London skyline.
Lance's familiar lampost was also present. This segment was completed
with a very nicely done transformation of a disobedient dove to scarf.
The set was changed to totally bare exept for an upstage undraped
table. Lance went offstage briefly and brought on an oversized
suitcase. He introduced the theme of the show _A Magical Journey_,
walked across the stage and placed the suitcase on the table. After
opening it he produced a half dozen beautiful dancers. I can't remember
in order what all happened next but the entire show was illusions
interspersed with dance numbers. There was also a spot with Lance doing
card manipulations. It was obvious to me that Lance had worked very
hard on a lot of details to bring the show off well. Each of the
illusion sequences went over very well. Timing, misdirection and effect
of the illusions were flawless. Other areas need a lot more work for a
critical eye. The show needs help in pacing and technical details,
particularly lighting cues and spot operation. I probably notice this
more than most as it was once my area of expertise. The theme _Magical
Journey_ could have been referred to more and followed more closely for
better continuity. At most points in the show the theme is lost.
Most impressive to the audience were the Gypsy Moth illusion, Vanish of
Lance from a large record player, then reappearance in the audience,
and both levitations. The first levitation was of a girl in a very
sheer outfit. It was obvious that there was no harness on her etc. She
was levitated from a sleeping position on a lion skin(?) that was over
1ft thick.(this base needs to be disguised as something else) This was
followed by a Keller levitation of Lance with the same girl laying on
top of him. Very sensual movements by both during this lev. act out a
great fantasy. As climax both float up into the flys.
There was a great middle act by juggler Michael Goudot(sp?). He was a
very funny guy. He started playing classical music on the ancient
screaming candles, juggled bean bag chairs, large knives, apples etc.
Weaker points of Lances show were DeKolta chair vanish of audience
member, card manipulations and cigarette manipulations. In my opinion
he should drop the cigarette work. He does it well but it doesn't play
very strong. (Possibly just a lot of non-smokers in the audience these
days)
I also wish this show had a printed program to help remember what was
done and to provide a souvenir of the show. This would also help Lance
build better name recognition.
After the show we met with Lance for a short while and discussed the
development of the show and news of who was in town etc. After this
(about 1 am)Jerry Burton had to leave for his flight home. The rest of
us were off to Darwin's Magic Club meeting at Pat's chinese restaurant.
Here we caught up with Leslie Manning from LA and shared
jokes, cardtricks, thimble and thumbtip moves with Gary Darwin who has
authored a few books on the art of using a thumbtip. We also spent some
time with Geno Munari, Hardeen and some of the other locals. Yes, Iggy
was there too but he had no clue as to who we were and left us alone.
He was too busy showing his freshly purchased packet trick to his twin.
We closed Pat's down but continued on in the parking lot until Biro-san
and the Tabman were bushed. Frog was famished for chinese food but was
unable to get any at Pat's as they had stopped serving hours before we
arrived. So Frog, Leslie, VanVranken and Carpenter went on the great
chinese food hunt. We finally ended at the Imperial Station's coffee
shop. and talked there 'till 6 am. The party finally broke up as
VanVranken had to be to work by 7am and we were all out of steam.
Everyone went back to their hotels for a little sleep. We saw a
beautiful sunrise on the way over.
Day 2
Lichtman, Biro, Carpenter, and Tabman were all up by 8-8:30 am and out
for a quick bite to eat (snack bar) then on to Gamblers Book Club. We
stayed there browsing and finding old treasures 'till the Frog was
almost sure he'd miss his plane. We dropped him off at the airport just
in time. Biro then had to meet with clients so the MAGIC! Vegas bash
was over. Thanks for a great time guys!

Re: MAX MAVEN AT ICE HOUSE
Stan, I had the same problem with the End Of File character. THe
solution is to end your word processing documents with 2 returns. When
uploading into the message base MAGIC! will see only the two returns
and will give you the option menu. This places the EOF past MAGIC!'s
response where it does no harm.

Re: MO MOJO!!!!!
I thought I invented that gag of dropping the die!!! Altho I recall
seeing it a few times BEFORE I INVENTED IT... As far as I know the
FIRST magi to do the stacking was Johnny Paul. Crandall had the
first "correct" description in print. There was a guy (a bartender)
named Platt (not Johnny Platt) that Paul saw do a stack. He was not
a magician. I have a number of neat stunts with the stacing, but
the KING was a guy I saw at FISM that wound up with 6-inch dice
under waste basket... then produced so many dice his table was
buried in them... (folding type) -- I loved the act, but was not
considered a winner due to being "juggling".
.
As far as Biro Juggling Cigar Boxes... I tried many times and failed,
it is not easy... but have a similar effect that is a Killer that
I plan to market. Got it handed down to me from a retired circus
juggler. And to my knowledge NO ONE IN THE WORLD IS DOING IT.
.
Mark Leddy, the famed Ed Sullivan Show booker of novelty acts, saw
me do my routine and said it had one of the best walk off's he had
ever seen for a juggler. Ask Martha Stevens about it... i did it
for her in a show in Mexico City nightclub one time...

Re: HELP!
Greetings from the wine country. Haven't been around this place
much as I have been locking myself in the studio creating new
stuff.
I will be negotiating a number of contracts for out of town
performances. I am not real sure how to handle negotiating the
fees for travel and lodging. I would appreciate it if those with
experience in these matters would give me some hints.
I feel it is a toss up between building these costs into the
price of the act or itemizing the charges and informing the
customer of the extra charges.
These gigs will be at large conventions, mostly held at
large hotels. In this case should I pay for the room
and get reinmbursed through the performance fee, or
have the client pay for the room and handle the
accomodations on their own?
I really appreciate any advice y'all may have. After things
settle down I hope to become a more frequent contributor here.
Thanks. Steve Kucera "the Wine Country Wizard".

Re: HELP!
My advice, for what it is worth... when I was doing trade shows you
have a SET FEE. You then add on, Air, Taxis, parking, meals, hotel,
etc. Some firms do not want a free ride on food, etc. and prefer a set
per diem per day charge. Or you can just charge room and travel. But
you must get your price PLUS the travel/accomodation.

Hmmm... Seems to me that whenever magicians gather at a hotel, they
already have strange things between their walls. At IBM, Tab had a big
Anvil case on wheels with all his stuff in it. As the bellman wheeled
it up to the room I looked at Tab and said, "I still think we shoulda
put in airholes - I'll bet he ain't doin' too good in there..." Tab
said, "Don't worry, he'll be OK." Bellman said, "Uh, what do you have
in here?" And I said, "A King Cobra." Face it - they had strange
things in their walls - and our room didn't get made up for four days.
Then again, it didn't get robbed either!

Re: MAGIC! CHALLENGE
Two methods -
.
1 - The chips on chain are scored on the back (about half way thru)
When the spectator chooses a color, you already have your hand in yo
ur pocket with your fingers on the catch, as a reference. You move to
the selected color and break the chip in half and it falls off.
.
Produce the chain with the chip missing. You have six single, duplica
te chips in an index holding inside the pocket. Your reach back in an
d produce a duplicate color. The plastic chips would work best.
.
2- Have six chains in an index with the duplicate chip loose. When th
the color is chosen.
.
What do I win ??

Re: IMPENDING NUPTIALS
Thank you very much, David. I have a question for you about an element
of the Jewish ceremony. As I'm sure you know, an essential tradition
is the breaking of a glass. My question is, how do you find a glass
light enough so that it doesn't cause a head injury in the bride?

Re: IMPENDING NUPTIALS
Uh, Evan - There may be some variant of the glass breaking ceremony in
the more liberal wings of Judaism of which I am unaware, but in the
traditional approach, the bride's head does not normally come into
proximity with the glass. A far more likely injury is your missing the
glass and crushing her toes, and most brides customarily wear steel
tipped shoes since they want to make their position clear to the groom
from the very first.
Naturally, in the most Orthodox circles, the bride is so heavily veiled
that not only would flying glass fail to injure her, but she could take
up arc welding during the spare time in the ceremony. As a matter of
fact, it is always wise to take a peek prior to the ceremony to make
sure that it is the right woman inside of all that regalia.
The glass is normally wrapped in heavy cloth and is placed very close
to the heel of the groom's right shoe (assuming he is right footed).
The move is a simple one - you lift your foot and crush the glass.
This may be practiced at home, prior to the ceremony, by using empty
ketchup bottles.
The basis of this tradition should be pointed out to those who are not
of the Jewish faith. The breaking of the glass symbolizes our grief at
the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. It is a sign that even at
the moment of our happiness (such as a wedding), we are reminded of our
sadness at the loss of our ancestoral place of worship. More
generically, of course, it serves as a similar reminder of the
suffering that exists in the World.
P.S., Evan - It is considered very poor form not to break the glass on
the first shot.

Re: SETUP
CMOS is actually part of the hardware. Thus, to really change the way
it operates, you have to change the hardware itself. As I mentioned,
there are some software products that will also perform in its place.
In addition, depending on the way your system is set up, it is also
possible that the "card" that controls your disk drives has a "BIOS
extension" built in to it and that that could be changed (sometimes
just by moving a switch on the card) to fix the configuration. The
problem is that it is very difficult to know which element is doing
what in your machine without seeing it. Now I guess if I was truly a
good mentalist and software expert, I could have you look at the things
and I would be able to see what they look like - but you know how it is
- at any given moment, there hare hundreds of folks in the World
looking at the innards of their computers and that makes the image very
muddy. Best advice I can offer is to find the User Group and look for
the guy that most people ask questions of. He will probably be wearing
a Hawaiian print shirt and will have a pocket protector jammed full of
pens and screwdrivers (note: if there is no little screwdriver in the
pocket pack, he may only be a software expert - you want the guy with
the screwdriver. [further note - if the screwdriver is the kind that
has a little magnet on top and the magnet is still there, then he's not
a real expert]). A few words of encouragement and he will cheerfully
follow you home and diagnose your machine. A cold pizza on the table
and he will move in, at least until the supply of pizza runs out.

Re: OUT TO LUNCH
I haven't written my review of the MAGIC! Luncheon for GENO MUNARI yet,
I'm still recovering! OK, I'll give it a shot - each MAGIC! luncheon
and function has been terrific, but this was the most terrific! There
was a high level of energy and action in the Houdini Seance Room.
Everyone was "doin' stuff," even MARVIN STERN, who never does card
tricks, was doin' stuff.
GENO, of course, can kill with his "simple stuff" and the "good stuff"
is beyond belief (I don't believe S&R have a trademark on that term).
We went for almost four hours and no-one was bored or tired. It was a
real MAGIC! jam session.
BUT, there was more! It seems that early on Thursday morning, about 2
a.m., one of our members was thinking about how he hadn't seen Geno in
a long time, so he and his wife DECIDED TO FLY IN FOR LUNCH. So
MICHAEL and HANNAH AMMAR "dropped in" to be with Geno!!! Funny part
was they had to fight their way in! The waiter was refusing to let
them in because we "were a _private_ party!"
In short, this MAGIC! luncheon will certainly go down in my private
memory book as one of the best ever. And now that my wife is back in
town, we are trying to work out arrangements to go to the Castle to see
Geno again.
