Re: MAGIC AUDITION
A great deal depends on the type of "I.Q. Test" that you were given.
If it was a paper and pencil test, then it is probably not particularly
useful, although the two score being that high do tend to support one
another. If it was a standardized I.Q. test such as the Stanford-Binet
or the Weschler, and if it was administered by a well-qualified
individual, then the "scores" are a bit more supportable. Actually,
the "margin of error" is not that dependent upon the distance from the
center of the curve. As a matter of fact, it is rather predictable -
one standard deviation being about 15 points on the Weschler and about
18 points on the Binet.
There is, of course, more than one definition of "genius." But
generally, in serious psychological circles, the clinical definition is
related to an I.Q. Test.
Frannkly, when all is said and done, I think I prefer the version with
a deck of cards. Or you can use a bucket of water and the individual's
foot - there is a .62 correlation between the amount of water displaced
by the person's dominant foot when inserted in the bucket of water, and
their I.Q.

Re: PACKET TRICKS
The precise idea you describe is different than other related items I'm
aware of, but there are a number of similar routines in print. The
"Locked Deck" effect by Lu Brent (marketed several times sans credit)
has an obvious relationship in terms of effect. There's an effect of
mine called "Strung-Out" which essentially follows the same plot (using
string rather than nut&bolt), but takes the effect into an additional
phase. (If you're not familiar with this, you'll see it in the lecture
I do in Nashville.) Joe Berg also had a clever trick with similarity of
effect.
Some years back Tannen's marketed an effect which is, in a sense, the
reverse of your plot: a signed card was found skewered by a large nail
that was securely stuck through a block of wood, thus impossibily
locking the card into place. The method was sort of a reverse of the
one you're using for your routine.

Great idea - have him stand up with the card in his teeth and then

After about 3 effects the guy would probably figure-out that he was

Baltimore was one of those times we got to negotiate when the hotel
was still a hole in the ground. Otherwise the room rates and other
items would have been very different. We got the same situation in
the Omni hotel in San Diego in 1989. You reduce the risk of the
hotel not happening if they have started construction. There are
many they are pitched to us as definite on paper that never make it
into reality. It is a dangerous balance of having to be three or
four years in front and finding the most advantageous situations.

Sounds like your I.Q. scores and your feet correlate. There is a
"downside" risk to the foot test - large feet are also common on people
with very low I.Q.'s! So if you have really big feet you generally are
either very high I.Q. or very low I.Q. Odds favor the high side.

You have to be careful about the "highly correlated" part, Jerry.
Point six two is not high. But, in general, people with high I.Q.'s

far cry from the common stereotype. I believe that the best studies on
this were the Terman long term studies in which they followed a group

some of the funniest, most intelligent, most likable people I've

A die has six sides and just in case you were an idiot, it might be too
difficult to figure out. A coin is better. But true idiots have
I.Q.'s from 0 to 30 (imbeciles are generally from 30 to 50 and morons
are 50 to 70 - it should be pointed out that these are rather archaic
terms). An individual with an I.Q. below 30 is not likely to be able
to tell the head from the tail of the coin. Idiot-savants are always
an interesting topic, but true idiot-savants are very rare.

towards the Postal service on this bulletin board. I have pretty much
given in to the universal joke of the oxymoron "Postal Service" and I
have gamely given a few jabs of my own. Everyone has at least one
horror story of how the neighbor mailed something to you and it didn
not arrive until three weeks later via the slow bannana boat around
Cape Horn. Their are other topics and interests of mine that have been
sideswiped also but it's better for me to just let it be. I know how

If you should ever mail anything again and lose it don't forget to
check with the dead letter office. Sometimes a shipping label can fall
off or get ripped off being jostled with other packages. If there is
no identifying information attached to it they will hold it for 90 days
before disposing of it. Don't forget return addresses on the package
or letter itself and inside also if practical. You wouldn't believe

Re: 5 CARD MYSTERY
The Instructions for the Gileegaloo Bird use a stack from A to K,
on the bottom and a reverse count of the circle of cards from whence
the birdie stops on it if you know what I means.
Is not like Don Alan's Ranch Bird - which uses all same card in
the circle, or pile as you see fit.
Then there was the baffling version Koornwinder does where a
match laying across a coke bottle top (emptied) bursts into flame
when it is over the chosen card. Never figured that one out.
Then there's "Frisco Pete, the San Francisco Treat" originated
by me and marketed by Magic Inc., in Chicago... a take off on the
Ranch Bird but the bird doesn't find the card... the signed card
winds up being found in the bag from whence the bird came from.
You cop the card and load into the bag when you go into bag for
the windup key.... subtle timing me bucko!

Re: 5 CARD MYSTERY
There is a variant on the 1/2 force deck version which is called "Krazy
Klock" and which I have no credits for, except that it is loosely based
on Future Shock. In it you do some stuff with predictions and you
predict that the card the person selects (from the clock circle) will
NOT be a certain card. The audience isn't particularly impressed,
until it turns out that ALL the other cards in the circle ARE dupes of
the one you predicted would NOT be picked!
In the Waggawudda paper bird the card vanishes while the bird is
messing around. The magi says, "Help! I believe he's swallowed it!"
(in the original patter there is no particular emphasis on "swallowed,"
although clearly that could be played in a bird trick). The bird lays
an egg and the card is in the egg. Waggawudda bird is a large version
of a standard Origami flying bird.

If I remember correctly the amount of water that is displaced is
related to the mass of the object put in. Archimedes used the
principle to determine if the kings crown was gold or lead. Something
like that anyhow. Therefore, mass is in there somewhere. Intuitively
I would think with a foot the larger would displace more water becaus
e of its larger volume as well as mass.

If our masses were all close to the same, we would all weigh the
same, which we clearly do not.

Re: ABBOTTS
The following item, entitled "Incident #4," appeared in the October,
1991, New Tops (published by Abbotts):
"During the early (July) days of pre-planning, Abbotts was asked if we
would do a favor. A computer communications system (a bulletin board)
needed some publicity, some distribution of their services. We readily
agreed to include their brochure with every registration packet.
Anything that helps magic, helps Abbotts. The downside of this story
is this: The person for whom we did the favor reviewed the convention
for the bulletin board group. This write-up was filled with
inaccuracies and errors. There is no excuse for not correctly spelling
a performer's name - everybody received a printed program! The
inaccuracies were worse. He mistakenly reported that registrations
seemed to be down about twenty-five percent. How he arrived at this
figure, we'll never know. He couldn't have asked anybody on the Abbott
staff, as those figures are not available until late Saturday
afternoon, not on Wednesday when it was reported. In actual fact, the
total attendance was 990 - a little higher than the previous year and
well within the range of the last five conventions. In fact, more
people registered earlier for the entire four days than ever before in
the past ten years! It was the biggest Wednesday turnout Abbots has
ever experienced!
"This reviewer took great pains to denegrate the act of Marvyn & Carol
Roy - Mr. Electric. He complained that many of the bulbs didn't light.
(In fact, only the right hand set of four as produced from the bag
failed to light - the videotape doesn't lie!) All this plus the fact
that Carol Roy performed on a knee with three badly strained ligaments!
Plus - the awards committee later awarded Mr. Electric (Marvyn & Carol)
the Neil Foster/Bill Baird manipulation award! What show did this
reviewer see? What person, setting himself up as a magic convention
reviewer, does not know that the name of Jim Steinmeyer's original
illusion is: Origami (as presented by David Seebach)? This reviewer
did not. This particular reviewer seemed most put out that the act he
favored the most in the morning contests - failed even to place! This
bulletin board system, by the way, used to be offered for free and its
organizers are now requiring a fee of $30.00."

Re: PSYCHIC HALLOWEEN
Just got back from a spiritual demo over at Psynetics here in
Anaheim. The lady that did it is 80 years old - jeez I hope I'm in
that good of shape when I'm 80, she was a dynamo. They gave out
billets with numbers on them and by holding them within your
'aetheric' boundries she gave spirit readings to everyone. Pretty
standard cold reading type stuff.
.
The transfiguration part was kind interesting. She had 2 black
backdrops at ninety degrees to one another and she put a black cloth
around her neck, so only her head was showing. She explained that
she would go into trance and let the ectoplasm of spirits enter her
body so that she would take on different forms. They then turned off
the lights and her head was illuminated by a single red light from
below about 6 ft in front of her (reminded me of when we put flashlight
s under our chins in the dark, when we were kids to get a real scary
look). If you unfocused your gaze (as she had 'suggested') and tried
to 'see' the change you could see all kinds of images (like looking
at ink blots or clouds). People in the audience were to call out
what they were seeing - several saw an old indian, one woman saw a
chinese man, etc.
.
We left after 15 minutes of staring at a head in the dark - the rest of
them may still be there, for all I know. Very interesting evening.

Re: MAGIC AUDITION
Jerry,
Here, perhaps, is a subject that I should leave alone.
Unfortunatly, I never have had much sense in this area. Mass is
a unit very much like weight. In fact, Kilogram (or gram) is a
measure of mass not of weight. On Earth, it makes little sense
to differentiate the two. An iron bar that weighs 50 tons will
sink in water because it only displaces it's own volume of water
which isn't anywhere near 50 tons. However, if you take that
same iron bar, and shape it so that the volume of water it
displaces is more than 50 tons, then it will float. This is what
allows steel and concrete ships to float. Now, since we all are
made up basically of water, our mass per volume (density) units
are all pretty close to the same. The only thing that you prove
when you displace water, is how much volume there is. Since
Archemedes didn't have the Calculus to determine the area under a
curve, he did the next best (and simplest) thing. Which was to
weigh an object, (mass) then find out how much water it
displaced, (volume) thus finding out the density.
Enjoy!

Seems to me that I remember tin chickens that laid eggs, but it is a

form of photography - used mercury vapor, I believe - that shortened
the lives of early photographers.

Yes, Idiot is very close to a capacity to advance to a 0 to 2 year old

never learn to walk or feed themselves. You are quite correct - the
term is obsolete in professional circles. The general substitute is
Severely Retarded.

We had a smaller crowd than usual come to the door - probably no more
than 100 to 150 kids this year. I think that after a while Nathan got
the idea that since the remaining candy would remain in the house it
would be good to limit the outflow. Everytime the bell would ring,
he'd run to the door and before he opened it, he'd yell, "How Many?"

Y'know, their comments about inaccuracies sound kind of strange
coming from someone that once had Melinda billed as "Melanie, the
first NUDE lady of Magic!" Good thing she doesn't read New Tops!
I can't fault them for their defense of their attendance count.
As for the light bulbs, from an audience viewpoint, a gap as big as
four bulbs in a row probably looks awfully bad coming from a Pro.
Our guy never said he was a "Convention Reviewer", just had some
comments from an attendee's point of view. I'm sure others had
opinions as well.
Maybe I'll write them a letter.
Anyone have their ADDRESS? ;-)

Interesting! I'll have to try it! Taco Bell is nearby and is our

That is not a bad idea. I will be working in Japan for two weeks.
I am working for the third richest man in the world, and he loves
magic. I will be doing three stage shows and three private shows.
It really is fun there, as you know. I will be leaving on the 15th

Re: ABBOTTS
Pete -
I disagree with you! First of all, Randy's messages about Abbotts were
not reviews, per se, they were more like letters. Secondly, I think
that from time to time it is worthwhile to see things from the
perspective of an average attendee rather than from someone with a
great deal of experience. When we do the final test on our products,
it is always with people who are as close the the intended audience as
possible. The "experts" would have already given their input. I think
that Randy's perspective was very interesting.
Also, an experienced reviewer often has a number of axes to grind - he
or she is likely to have friendships or animosities that will effect
their judgement, background experiences that are likely to differ from
the average attendee, etc. That is not to say that experienced reviews
are not highly desirable, just that they are different.

Hi Guy!!!! Sorry it has been so long since I have spoken with you. I
have had a helluva life since last we communicated. First I had to
relocate. I always hate a move. And during that process, someone
broke into my car and stole almost eevrything I own. My computor, two
Anvil cases of magic and sound equipment, all my clothes. I came out
with practically nothing. I headed back to New Orleans for a while to
rebuild. Then when I got back, I landed a gig in Phoenix for a week
and am just now returning from that. So I have been abit2O.-*>=| busy.
So Anyway I hope things are well with you and you are getting things
in order for the move. Still want to have you build for me, but am
having to spend money to replace alot of everyday things. Hope to hear
from you soon. MIKE.

thats all well and good but do we really need more jay scott berrys to
set the world on fire?? imagin a kid show performer going to mrs.
jones's house for a b-day party "look" says magi and proceeds to light
his dove pan with a flash of fire and smoke, BUT what happens is that
the combustion leaves a big burn mark on the ceiling or worse yet....
the carpet catches on fire!!!!! world clown asso has insurance for this
but is the risk of a young magician burning himself or others really
worth it?????? william wizard has a flasher device similar to the
dragonsd breath that attaches to a bic lighter and how bout the match
inferno that was popular some years back????? think about the risks
involved. but, we are in a profession that takes the risk (last
halloween for example) of being sealed in a coffin or hanging
upsidedown in a straightjacket by a burning rope. we don't need another
mike rosso tragady (anyone know how he is doing?) remember magic is
almost like sex (huh???) we perform to our best ability and in order to
reach the magical orgasim we must also play safely.
forever in fun,
scott alcalay, aka scotty the magic clown

Scott...students and most adults associate fire with mystery. With
kids we can either copperate and discuss ideas with them so they
understand the dangers or we can let explore dangerous ideas without
guidance. i find most of my talented and gifted students wish to
explore new ideas. Rememberm there are many things we did as kids that
our parents were not to find out about. ....I am glad to see that as
a clown you underastand magic. Most people in clowning, and I have
seen hundreds, do not understand the simplest ideas of performing and
routining and practice, much less ask for help and input before they
doan act. The young people that I ssee in magic are getting advice
before doing a show....Hope you enjoy the clowning, it paid for a lot
of college for our children.

Re: PSYCHIC HALLOWEEN
Enjoyed Jerry Burton's review of the 80-year-old
psychic. I just returned from a performance by Cab
Calloway and the Count Basie Orchestra. Cab
(introduced as his Hi De Ho-ness) announced that he
will turn 84 on December 25. Amazing that he not only
CAN work at this age, but IS working, on the road.
Great stuff tonight including "Blues in the Night,"
"Minnie the Moocher," "Good Time Charlie's Got the
Blues," etc. Any magic? Well, other than his age and
the great music, Cab did one neat bit where, while
dancing during the start of a song, he blew into the
microphone repeatedly. Each time he blew, a little
more of the stage lighting went out, until all that was
left was a solo spot on him. A nice touch, leading
into the "St. James Infirmiry Blues." All in all a
fine show -- catch it if it comes your way.

Re: ABBOTTS
David,
Except for the misspelling of a name, I don't think that they
have a legitimate gripe. These were the impressions of someone.
That, in essence, is all a review is. One of the wonderful
things about electronic media is the ability of anyone with an
opinion to write something on it. They obviously have some
access to the board, so they should have written their complaints
here. Then, if you, the sysop, had squelched them, or made the
review "the law" of the board, they would have a real issue to
raise.
To even suggest that their giving advertising requires you to
only allow positive messages on your board is a dangerous
attitude. Certainly they have a right to some credit in this
department, but one has nothing to do with the other.
One man's opinion.
Enjoy!

David, I don't know if you had tried my version of the
backflips or not yet but I've been tinkering with the final
showing of the backs of the four cards which is really five.
A few times (thank goodness it was only in practice!) the
back of the odd red backed King would slide out from beneath
the card hiding it. Of course that would ruin the effect if
they were to get a glimpse of or even suspect a fifth card.
Herewith is my new and improved handling for it. You can use
this for any time you have five cards but want to show them
as four hiding the middle one. Please read this with the
five cards in your hands and see if it works for you.
.
The packet of cards is held face down in the left hand
dealing position. The right hand comes over palm down and
takes hold of the top and bottom narrow edges by the thumb at
the rear and the second finger at the top near the right
edges. The right hand is angled outwards to leave an
unobstructed view of the cards.
The left thumb squeezes over the top card about a third to a
half an inch. The four left fingers simultaneously lightly
squeeze the balance of the packet inward towards the inside
of the palm. This keeps the cards squared. The right hands
thumb and second finger are used to keep the top card squared
with the rest of the packet. The left hand now releases its
grip and the packet is held only by the right thumb and
second finger. All you have done so far is to neatly jog the
top card out to the right about a third of an inch.
The left fingers go under the packet and lightly draw the
bottom card entirely away from the packet so it can be seen
as a single card. I draw it deep into my left palm to leave
my left fingertips free. My left hand remains still as my
right hand moves towards the right and slightly downwards
brushing the edges of the packet against the single card in
the left hand. The brushing action with light pressure helps
with the audio illusion as you can hear the unmistakable snap
of a single card.
Then draw off the new bottom card in the same way dropping it
about a third of an inch to the right of the card in the left
hand. Square the left packet up with the left hand as the
right hand again moves back to the right.
You now have two cards squared in the left hand and what
appears to be two cards separated by a third of an inch in
the right hand. Bring the double cards over to the left hand
in the same way as before but drop them closer to the left
edge of the packet in the left hand. Leave them jogged about
a quarter of an inch to the right. Draw them square
simultaneously as you move the right hand away. The right
hand single card brushes against the edge of the packet again
with the sound of a single card. For the last card which is
still held between the thumb and second finger, I place my
right forefinger in the center of the card and lightly bow it
downwards. The card is brought over to the left packet, the
center of the card touches the center of the packet and it is
let snap onto the others.
.
If you do this at normal speed the whole thing takes only
five seconds. If you want to go extra slow for added
emphasis you can do one more thing to make it squeaky clean.
After you jog over the top card at the beginning and you are
reaching underneath the packet to draw out the bottom card
you can place a little pressure with your left thumb on top
of the cards and actually push the bottom three cards a
little to the right before you pull one out. This leaves the
visible left edge of the right hand packet without a double
thickness to any of the cards. The double is squared as it
is placed into the left hand.
It looks so clean you can fool yourself!
Since I can't show you with pictures I hope this was detailed
enough. Please let me know if this helps or if there is
anything I was not clear enough on.

hey now doug, i am not JUST a clown!!! I have been involved in magic
since......and have been a member of the castle since '81. i use the
makeup for fairs and festivals and the traditional b-day party. why is
it that many magi shun the clown?? i know, because the magi do not
believe that the clown is not a tech-noid!!! some yes some no. i AM
competent as a finger flinger too! true many things we did do as kids
our parents never found out about but in todays day and age....well
thats a horse of a diffrent color....i would hate to see a young magi

magi do. (imagin a young b-day magi doing the fire thing for his

who did not have guidence, however as a working pro, i am alarmed at
the sight of a novice or hobbyist doing the element of danger stuff for
the pre-teen set. YES, fire does add mystery to the show!! were you at
the castle when prof. florey set the parlor curtains on fire or the guy
(dont rember name) who set the palace curtains ablaze and david novich
had to run for an extinguisher????? not a pretty picture!! this
happened at "gong show night" peter pit relates to this in a humorus
way. ask him bout the incedent. UNFORTUNATLY, alot of our younger
proteges are not aware of the danger or dont take the precautioons the
knoledgeable take (but then again how many people lost their lives to

As to our editorial policy, it is clear that messages on MAGIC! express
the viewpoint of the individual who writes them and NOT any official
position. We do not "squelch" messages unless they involve illegality
or contain foul language, or something like that. I DO reserve the

Re: MILK TO SILK
I haven't seen this effect done and I don't know how it is done but I
have a general idea that you pour milk into a glass and it changes to
a white silk. OK, fine. I have a story line that I use where I vanish
a glass of beer and I use slush powder for it. I was asked to do a
kids party next week and I didn't think that would go over as well with
the parents. So I thought I would vanish some milk instead and that's
when I remembered the title "Milk to Silk". I must have seen it in a
catalog somewhere. What I've done is take a couple of styrofoam cups
and cut one of them down to form a small compartment which I can glue
into the whole cup. This compartment will hold the silk. The slush
powder will be at the bottom and I can use a milk pitcher prop to
visibly pour some milk in the cup but most of it will stay in the
pitchers receiving compartment. I go from a pitcher full of milk to a
cup full of milk which I invert on my palm and say a handful of...
and then pull out the silk. I dunno, I guess it's better than beer.
Anyway, my question is this- It takes some preparation to make each of
these cups and they can only be used once. Is there a better way?
I suppose I could not pour any milk into the glass as the pitcher is
designed to do but I like the idea of them seeing milk flow into the
cup. Maybe I don't need that extra realism to gain the same effect??

The original Milk to Silk by Hiromasa Fukai used a mirror glass with

practical, as the unit need only be washed out, and also as it is
transparent the audience sees the milk enter the glass.

If the mirror faces audience what do they see before you pour the milk

Re: SETUP
Very interesting, Harrison! You were using words like "setup" in your
original message so I assumed that you had a system with a CMOS setup
for the drives. Your solution, using the device driver, is absolutely
correct for your machine. As to using D:, actually that gives you a
choice of formats - you can type Format B: for 720's and Format
D for 1.44's. There may be a way to use a mode command (depending
on your version of DOS) to "mode" D: back to B:, but even when I used
a setup like you have, I never bothered. There are some advantages to
having the two drives. As a matter of fact, if you put in the same
statement a SECOND time, right after the first time, you will be able
to use COPY to copy files from "pseudodrive" D: to "pseudodrive" E:.

HELP... ALL... ANYBODY... HELP....
MY REGULAR AT COMPUTER WON'T WORK.... HELP.... Ok, here's the story.
I was in Ventura, exited and forgot to RELEASE the memory... and
tried to load Publisher's Paintbrush. It started to load and FROZE
SOLID... Usually if I boot it it unloads the RAM Memory and I can
then start over and load the next memory hog kinda program.
NO GO...
So, turn off alla power. Turn it on. The initial messages on the
screen read and it gets up to MEMORY Test, gets to 640 and FREEZES
UP... It used to go on and tell what things, Mouse, etc. in there
and test 1408 of EXTENDED MEMORY... BUT NO DICE.
So, I put the DOS 3.3 STARTUP DISK IN A DRIVE.... NOTHING.... STILL
THE SAME RESULT, FREEZES AT 640. No error messages no nuttin.
ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTT
.
Uh, is a 286. Is this the time to make it a 386? If you do this
stuff does all the programs and data on the Hard Drive stay OK?
(I have a fairly recent FULL TAPE BACKUP OF ALL, C,D,E,F DRIVES.
have 120 Meg Hard Drive, partintioned to 4 30 Meg drives.

Re: MILK TO SILK
That doesn't sound like much work at all. Why not get a mirror
glass? Put some silicone clear sealer around the mirror to make
it waterproof.
.
Doesn't Paul Diamond tell us that if you microwave the slush stuff,
and dry it out it is RE USABLE?

Re: DAVID COPPERFIELD
I will try to find out if David is going to fly at the Wiltern.
If it is a full proscinium stage with the standard stuff, he is
most likely gonna do it.

Re: MILK TO SILK
You hold the glass at a slight angle so nobody "makes" it.
I usedto do a bit with a mirror glass (for Magicians only ) where
I looked into it and Combed My Hair! Ken Brooke used to show a
mirror box empty, produce the stuff to shave with and shave by
looking into the mirror box...
.
slush IS RE USABLE OEVER AND OVER AGAIN...
