Re: MILK TO SILK
Stan,
Paul Diamond has an interesting solution for the used Slush.
He says to microwave it on high for about five minutes. It should
reduce to about half it's original (wet) size. He said another
five to ten minutes should completely dry it out. You can then
crumble it back into powder and reuse it. Don't know which is
cheaper, three bucks of powder, or a two hundred dollar machine
and fifteen minutes of electricity. It works with water, don't
know about milk, could get messy!

Re: MILK TO SILK
One more thing, don't wash out the glass, just give it a smack on
your palm. It should drop out in a lump.
If the Mirror glass is of the fluted juice glass variety, the
ridges camoflage the mirror quite nicely. If you want to try it,
use a slightly curved insert (only about a quarter of a cylinder)
That might disguise the inside even more. A variation of this is
used quite effectively in a recent goldfish production (made by
El Duco?)

Re: MAGIC AUDITION
Pete,
This is more a note of reassurance. Probably, your hard drive is
okay, which means that all files and programs are okay. I think
David is right about your battery going dead. Except for a chip
failure, I can't figure what else it would be. It sounds like
you are getting your message even before it reads the A: drive to
find out what is there. This would definatly be a hardware
problem, and almost certainly nothing to do with how you exited
Ventura. (You notice that my statements have all of the
qualifying "almost"s in them. I've learned in my years with
computers that some of the strangest things happen.)
If you decide to upgrade, I strongly recommend you indeed contact
David first. He can tell you what you need to replace (whole
system, or mother board etc.) and can shop around for good
prices. I have gotten some good deals on Compu-Serve, but I
don't know how much of a hurry you are in.
Good luck!
Enjoy!

Undoubtedly a superfluous comment, but please don't microwave

variations of arc welding by puting metal to close to the walls

An alternate would be a Nikola glass -- this is one where the mirror is
made to take up a quarter of the area, like a Sphinx mirror setup;
advantage is that when you hold it in your hand the sides of your hand
are reflected as back (as per Sphinx concept) and it is really very
deceptive.

Re: DAVID COPPERFIELD
60 miles is well within the Los Angeles area. Basically, the plan
would be for you to communicate with everyone who might want to go to
the Copperfield show, figure out which day and time would be best, keep
track of the number of people, and place the reservations.
The show will be at the Wiltern Theater between November 29th and
December 8th. I don't have the showtimes yet - maybe the theater
(213-388-1400) does. My thinking is that this would be a good one for
either a matinee or an early show on a weekend - most frequently, David
does early shows at 5:30 and on Sundays at 1:00 and 4:30 - and
interested MAGIC! members and their families could attend (this could
be MAGIC!'s first family event). And if you could locate a reasonably
priced eatery nearby, those who are interested could go there
afterwards.
You willing?

Re: ABBOTTS
Squash you can make. Get a shot glass. Find a rubber ball that is
not TOO HARD, run a wire through it with a loop (small) at one end
so you can attach a rubber pull to it. You show glass of liquor
squeeze between your hands (put ball in glass let pull go) and it
is GONE... It should hang down behind you in middle at rear of
coat. There is a nice handling where you look for it behind one
knee and find it behind the other with other hand. Stealing the
glass with the right as the left is reaching for "nothing" behind
the left knee. If you can zip into San Fran (got to check the sked)
I can show you the good version and handling.

Re: MILK TO SILK
Geno, Glad the programs work! I noticed a small glitch the first
time you used it, but you quickly got over it.
I'll look up the name of the goldfish trick tonight. I saw it
demo'ed at Darwin's one night by Frank Herman. It's basically a
round bowl (four inch globe shape) full of water. Cover it with a
silk, when uncovered, a fish is swimming in the water. As you might
have already guessed, it's based on the mirror glass principle, but
using a piece of flexible mylar cut to fit the contours of the
bowl. There is a thread that extends outside the bowl. Grabbing
that through the cloth allows you to pull the mirror out of the
bowl as it's uncovered. The reflection of the curved mylar
camouflages quite nicely inside the water.
By the way, I have a video I need to get to you. I've tried
calling, but can't seem to catch you. If you like, I can leave it
backstage with Bonnie, or I'll just hold it until we can get
together again. Thanks for letting me see it.

Talk about chairs, John Ferrentino was on some comedy club show
last night. as he sat on his swivel stool, the seat dropped about
six inches. After an appropriately timed pause, he got up to show
that the seat had dropped, the column did NOT. It was protruding
quite menacingly from the center of the seat cushion. Got quite a
reaction! He then continued with a variation of Collector's
Workshop's new buzz saw "Power Chopper". (at only $1935.00
everyone should have one!)
By the way, I just got my CES badge in the mail. This might be a

Re: MILK TO SILK
I feature the Milk to Silk in my Wine Act.
It is an outstanding piece of magic that fits my
criterion for material to include in my act. It is
extremely visual and, when done properly, a real
miracle.
In my opinion, performing it without a mirror
glass diminishes the effect greatly. It can be
performed as a two part trick. Pour the milk, wave
the hand and flip the glass over ( Applause). Turn
the glass up again and produce silk. (Second
applause).
I have worked it out without a mirror glass, in
a metal goblet, but added smoke to the illusion.
The mystery that was lost with a non transparent
glass was made up for by the smoke effect. The
wine seemed to turn into the silk by way of smoke.
The secret is to pull the silk from the glass
slowly and time it so the silk is all the way out
just as the smoke ends.
Now I combine the mirror glass and the smoke
effect.
More hints: Ask yourself where did the milk come
from in the first place and where does the silk go
afterwards. Perhaps you could produce the glass of
milk, do the milk to silk, and then turn the silk
back into milk.
I would ( respectfully) like to ask that you give
this effect much thought and practice before
performance. I feature it in my act and so does
Jade (propably many more that I don't know of).It
is truly a miracle if done properly and should be
treated with great respect.
Best wishes.
Steve Kucera, the Wine Country Wizard.
P.S. I do it with wine.

Re: HALLOWEEN PARTY
In my comedy club work I have had to deal with many drunk
audiences. They are terrible and my advice would be not to
work those types of crowds. Of course I am refering to a
drunk crowd as opposed to a crowd that is drinking.
It sounds like you have been gaining a bit of new
experience since I last checked in, and that is what is
called for in the situation you described. Of course the
only way to obtain said experience is to endure the
nightmare of the crowd you had.
I have worked for a most types of audiences and have
learned which type my act works best for. Now that I have
defined my "market" it is up to me to get the gigs that
make me look best. I have turned away more performances
than I have accepted this year, and that is part of a long
term plan. I have purposely distanced myself from birthday
or any childrens performance, outdoor fairs and festivals
which used to be a big market for me, and virtually every
other show where I cant control the seating, lighting and
sound.
It may seem a bit egotistical to have such exacting
standards but I feel its the right choice. Magic is an art
and I have to perform in a situation where I can do my
best work, otherwise my act suffers as does the audience
and ultimately the client. No exposure is better than
bad exposure.
So, though there is no single answer to your dilemna,
one alternative is to be more selective about your
engagements. Know as much as possible about your audience
in advance, as well as the type of event. And don't be
afraid to ASK, for a seated audience, controlled lighting
and more. The client will get more bang for the buck by
going the little extra step.
Best of luck,
Steve Kucera, the Wine Country Wizard.

Re: CONTESTS
Greetings from the Wine Country.
I haven't been checking in lately as I have been swamped
with work, school and of course the Wine Act.
Which leads to point of this message. I am at the point
in my career where I feel confident about the act.
Confident enough to compete at the PCAM in Monterey this
year.
My major disadvantage is that I have never been to a
magic competition and have no idea what they are like.
I would be grateful if someone with experience in this
area of the arts would help fill me in on some things.
What is good length for an act? I was planning on
running 8 - 10 minutes. Too long?
What are the judges looking for? Is competition a
worthwhile way to get subsequent bookings or are they
just ego gratification.
Will I be able to supply my own technicians or do I have
to rely on the organizers' techs?
Any thoughts on stage competition in general and the
PCAM contest would be greatly appreciated. THanks.

David,
There is indeed a Dec. 1st Sunday Matinee. There are two shows
on Sunday. One at 1:30 and another at 5:00.
Ticket prices are as follows:
$31.50
$25.50
$23.50
If we get more than 20 people, we can get a group rate of 10% off
that.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I would prefer paying
the extra eight bucks to get good seats. I've never been to the
Wiltern theatre, and don't know what their seating is like.
The earlier we get our numbers together, the better the
arrangements will be, so everyone PLEASE hurry to let me know
what you want.
Let's shoot for 1:30, December 1st, and if anyone has a problem
with that, we can change it. I hope that that will avoid the "I
don't know, what do YOU want to do" syndrome.
Enjoy!

As someone who was isolated from the magic fraternity
as a young man, Genii magazine was my sole source of
convention news etc.. Since then I have been curious
about magic competitions. I decided to refrain from
entering one until I felt my act was good enough to do
well, even win an award.
I am not sure what I envision as the result of
entering and/or doing well in the competition. I
see it mainly as a way to introduce my body of work to
a ( hopefully) knowledgeable group of people for
criticism. I also feel that a good showing in a
competition could be benificial to my professional
career. A poor showing would show me that I should
keep working on it.
Maybe I am wasting my time by even considering
competing. The real point of my question was to get
the opinion of people like you. Is competing
worthwhile or just a wasted excercise. It seems to me
that some performers do quite well after appearing in
a competition.

All right! This is it! A trip to see David Copperfield at the
Wiltern theatre in Los Angeles.
Current plans are for December 1st, at 1:30. These are not set
in stone, and if you have a problem HURRY and tell us.
We are looking at getting the best seats available which will
cost $31.50/ticket unless we get more than 20 people. If we get
more than 20 people, it will reduce that cost by 10%. ($28.35
plus any additional taxes or fees.)
I am not very familiar with the Los Angeles area, so any
suggestions for a reasonably priced restaraunt around the theatre
(Western and Wilshire) are appreciated. Ideally we will all go
out for something afterwards.
DON'T MISS THIS!!!!! Everyone who has seen this show has RAVED
about it. The earlier everyone makes commitments, the better the
seating will be.
David, I have a fax machine so if you get a copy of the seating
chart, you are welcome to send it, or you can put it on the
computer as a GIF file. I don't have two phone lines, so will
need advance notice on the fax.
Here is your chance to ENJOY!

Re: MILK TO SILK
The Fukai glass is clever, but the angle of light has to be just righ
t. The glass has a mirror surface that divides the glass in half. The
glass has faceted surface so that light is somewhat diffused. You
pour the milk (any colored liquid to match the color of the silk) and
turn the glass 180 degress as you dump the 'milk' now as a silk into
your out-stretched hand. If you are working in a stage setting with
bright spots - you have to very very careful or you will get a terrif
ic FLASH of light as the spot bounces off the mirrored surface.

Re: CONTESTS
We had a rather heated debate concerning contests after IBM in July.
Based upon that discussion, I'm not sure T A is the 'best' person to
ask on whether contests are worthwhile or not.
.
I had thought about entering a contest at one time, but after hearing
the pros & cons on the subject and seeing what it takes to win, I've
decided its not worth the effort, for ME that is - perhaps it would b
e good for you. You are the only one who can decide.
Try some regional or local contests and see how you fare, nothing you
do to improve your technique or performance skills is ever a wasted
exercise.

It may be interesting as an experience, but I cannot caution you too
strongly about taking the reactions of a magic convention audience and
/or judges with a grain or pillar of salt. If Johnny Thompson talks,
listen -- but if Joe the insurance salesman, who may be great at
selling insurance, starts telling you about your staging -- well, don't
necessarily take it to heart.
Conventions can be useful in some cases as a showcase situation --
and if you win a trophy it always sounds good in your publicity
material. It is probably worth doing just for the experience of it,
but I wouldn't place too much importance on it if I were you.

HEY NOW, GENO!
.
I'm stumped, what does sandlot baseball have to do with
anything. Pete (biro?) does not play baseball? oh, allright. does he
play ice hockey, i often read some very funny Horse hockey from him.
many years ago, i used to go to rancho park, in W.L.A. to watch the
Magic Castle team play some very fine sandlot basball for charity. boy
those were the fun days of the club!
.
What kind of magic is your interest, I work at a restaurant 4
nites a week doing close-up stuff and twisting animals into balloons.
and the popular childrens party as well as the select adult (family)
shows. Moved away from the L.A. scene in 89 and its great to be a big
fish in a big pond, rather than a little fish in an even BIGGER pond.
i work quite abit up here and unfortunatly alot of the people i worked
for have been burnt out. (fire, not magic!)~ mostly the old
classics and some modern effects, not the same old tired stuff that we
see just too much of. anyway gotta boogie outta here

Re: I'M BACK
Florence was wunderbar. Italians tell me that Florentians are snobbish
and off-putting, but I found the real rough and tumble experience was
in Rome, where in the course of two hours (our entire stay in Rome), we
met a surly train station porter who sneered at all but dollars, a
homicidal taxi driver in fake Ray Ban's who pretended a lack of English
and an airport filled with barely adolescent Italian soldiers carryig
very real-looking Uzi machine pistols.
And, though you carefully avoided asking, the other Florence is well,
too. She wished we had brought her back more things.

love magic and the fun it brings people.
I especially like effects that apparently involve no apparatus, which

Thanks for the tip T.A.
The only reason I ask about contests is that it is one
aspect of performing that I am unfamiliar with. The more
important projects I am involved in don't need to be
discussed on this board.
I make a habit of taking magicians opinions with a grain
of salt and I appreciate the reminder.
You pretty much summarized my feelings about competing.
Maybe a showcase, a bright spot on the resume and a new
experience. Beyond that I have no illusions about the
results.
Jerry mentioned that a heated debate took place on the
subject. Instead of fanning the flames I will download the
file, read the opinions and draw my won conclusions.

Re: MAGICK
Hey now, Geno!
.
Do you live in Las Vegas Then? i have a whole lot of family there!
How long you been there? do you remember FOXEYS DELI? If so that was my
uncles place and where i got my FIRST magic kit, it was the one put out
by mattel many years ago. and from there, i was a bergs and hollywood
magic customer befor it lost the costume shop and magic was only in the
back part of the store. also i was a coustomer of BURT Green, of corner
magic and was there when earl nelson was behind the counter, saw some
great stuff then too! the effects with apparently no apparatus are
great! often times i would walk up to a table at the restaurant i work
at and just "borrow" items from the guests and do the trick - dirty
work done of course! The best lesson i ever learned was from a lecture
done at the I.A.M. Club bact in the late 70's was "start dirty and end
clean"
at the I.A.M magic C
and it isd the most valuble tool ever! Many times it is sheer extacy
for me to step away from the props and let the coustomer go ga ga
trying to recreate what they just saw!.......still.....what about
sandlot baseball?
.
Back to original comment....where in vegas are you? got kids out there?
is there someone i could contact with my promo stuff as a balloon dude?
I am sure i can make the agent happy with my skills. if you leave me an
address, i will send you a postcard of the " GREAT I AM " las vegas is
a fun place and no telling what it will be like when MGM does its new
thing. by the way ...... do you know about the airplain that is fenced
in off (sahara) or another street but Near mcCarren? it was supposed to
be a restaurant but never took off (no pun intended).......the other
bbs i mentioned earlier ws one that refers to "magick" the sysop is a
wiccan, and he has about 120k worth of files about wicca and other
"white magic" philosophys. It also contains other adult material some
might find not to their liking. (depending on your
lifestyle)
to their
alternitave lifestyle and soundmaster. the number is 510-430-9594
it is best to use a handle and the system requires no validation.
so have fun and when in japan.....have a blast!

Re: LEFT FIELD
Okay, it's time once again for (drum roll please) KEVIN'S
QUESTIONS FROM OUT OF LEFT FIELD!
I was reading "Impromptu Magic from the Magic Castle" and it
mentioned that J. B. Bobo lived in Texarcana. The book was
published in 1980, and I was curious if Mr. Bobo was still with
us, and if so, how one could see him perform.
Secondly, I was wondering about the field of Cruise ship
entertaining. One of the running messages titles when I first
started writing on this board was "Cruise ships and Tuxedos."
Now I've gotten to thinking that that might be a fun way to make
a living for a while. Comments? Suggestions? Words of Wisdom?
Warnings?
Thanks, we will now return you to your regularly scheduled

Then it is good enough for me. You should get a copy of his book,

I thing you are right about getting me the explanation for the
effect. But in translation I have blown it. When I see you, we can

I have been having some great fun with a packet trick, that Cards
by Martin, in Lancaster sells (Neil Lester), called Kings and Aces.
It is the ONLY packet trick I have and it even fools me when I do
it. .......goes like this.....show to red kings, show to black kings
put one red king on table. Three cards left in hand change to aces
....the one on the table is turned over, it too is an ace.

Don Jacobs, is my cousin and i am in contact with him quite a bit!
i was last in town in may of 90 at the Video Software dealers
Convention, don was there for entertainment tonight, and i was debuting
a "how to" video for making balloon animals! i will send you my promo
pak, if you want to see the video give don a call, he has a copy.
i miss the bergs but every now and then Ron pops up unexpectedly,
whoops! is he a wacked out trip!!!!
Well, i gotta get ready for work tonight, i do a local mexican
restayrant, the "balloon man" bringing a positive family atmosphere
in to the restaurant!!! they (the owners) say that!!
do you have a regular hotel or restaurant gig? i am sure there like
Los angeles, there are a shitloat of
magicians
in Los Angeles, there are a shitload of
magicians for parties and hotel/convention work.
.
.
quick question: you walk up to a small party, you are not sitting they
are. NO playing cards orany type of prop to open with on your person.
they have a full set dinner table, no food has been there only drinks,
what would you do to introduce yourself as a magician?
. i am couriose because i have a standard opening for that set up and
i wonderd if you did and what it would be, i simply do "salt shaker
thru table" with a big build up and naturally it is a stunner. then i
break out the cards and other toys.

In the opening, you can do whatever, since you have the gold. There
is no reason to have them suspect any props or whatever. Sometimes
you can even use a packet trick, of which I am not very found of.
(That was fond of). There is some really great simple ideas to
use that involve things you will find in a restaurant. Salt, money,
paper napkins, a glass, and maybe your calling card. In "The Magic
of Francis Carlyle (sic) he demos a great business card trick. He
showed me the trick at the Magic Castle more than 15 years ago.
You pretend to show a business card blank on both sides, and then
produce a printed side. It is very effective and a perfect way
for spectators to remember you.
By the way Scott. My Dad used to do business with Don Jacobs real
father and uncles in Burbank. They had a salvage yard. It was

Re: FRED'S SUBTLETY
For anyone that does the Card Named Fred trick or any
variation of it, I have come up with a little subtlety to add
to it. In the trick as I had learned it the bottom half or
face half of the deck is all different and the top half is
all the same. You just force one of the cards from the top
of the deck. The way that I do it is with 3x5 cards instead
of playing cards and I have something written on the faces of
the cards. For instance for the Post Office show I use
different city, states and zip codes.
Now for my subtlety. I place three odd cards on top of the
deck which is on top of the ones to be forced. I start to
thumb them off one at a time from my left hand onto my right
hand. This reverses their order. After three cards have
gone by I tell them to just touch anyone that goes by. When
they touch one of the force cards and they have assured
everyone they are happy with the free choice, I bring my
hands together enough so that I can push their card out for
them to grab. As they pull it out I bring my hands a little
closer together and slide the bottom indifferent card from
the right half discards onto the top of the left half that
the cards were being drawn off of. The result is that I now
have an indifferent card on the face of the bottom right hand
and the top of the left hand stacks. I turn over the left
hand top card and show it. "You picked the card right in
between the so and so and (I turn over the right hand packet
so it is face up) the so and so.
To me this makes the choice look like a genuine free one.
Let me know what you think.

Re: SETUP
You should have been here until 4 a.m. this morning while I was working
on Pete's computer! Weird machine.
"State of the art" is not always a necessity - if the machine is doing
what you want it to do, then as far as I'm concerned it is fine. I'm
still using a lot of "obsolete" equipment - as a matter of fact, my
original 10-year old genune IBM PC (the one with the optional diskette
drives) is still pressed into service around here at times.
On the other hand, there are some awfully nice things that can only be
done with the new machines. As to how fast times change, it has been
said that if the revolution that occurred in computer hardware had been
paralleled by a similar revolution in the auto industry, then a car
today would cost about $200 and would get 250 miles to the gallon!
What doesn't get mentioned in that analogy is that the car would only
be 1" long, would only come in black and would be manufactured in
Malaysia.

Re: MILK TO SILK
Yes! There is a better way! Use a mirror glass! Two different magi
performed this effect at the PCAM convention. Have the silk in the back
of the mirror glass, with slush powder in the front compartment.
Actually pour the milk into the "slush compartment". When it
solidifies, turn the glass upside down (mouth AWAY from the audience),
and boom! The silk side is toward the audience. Pull out the silk and
viola! Milk to silk.

Re: CONFERENCE ON MAGIC HISTO
The Conference on Magic History was, from this vantage point, an
unqualified smashing success.
Some of the highlights of the programme were: video of magic
highlights from The Ed Sullivan Show, which included Al Flosso, (my
favorite), Channing Pollock, Ballentine, several others...including
Sullivan performances of Jay Marshall and Rene Lavand, both of whom
were sitting in the theatre with us.
Jim Olsen & Homer Hudson performed Hero's Decapitated Horse, newly
constructed.
Michael McGiveney, father of quickchange or protean artist Owen
McGiveney, spoke on the subject, performed and showed footage of both
his father and himself in performance.
A special visit to the Huntington Library was conducted, where many
rare and some unique examples of antiquarian magic books were
displayed by special arrangement.
John Gaughan spoke on Houdini apparatus and ephemera. (John restored
the Houdini Water Torture Cell which was on display in the Exhibit
(Wayne is having a computer problem on his end. He will be continuing
this report later.)

Re: CONFERENCE ON MAGIC HISTO
Sorry for the problem...just got back home and here's the rest...
The Water Torture Cell, as I was saying, was on display in the exhibit
room in all its restored glory. Other spectacular items on display
included much from the Carter show...the Million Dollar Mystery, (90%
restored), his Spirit Cabinet and even his personal travelling trunk
complete with costumes, mirror, throat lozenges, razor and other
personal effects.
Bill Smith and Mike Caveney spoke about the Carter show aquisitions and
Charles Carter's life and performances.
Leon Leon, (son of The Great Leon), discussed his father with Caveney
and presented illustrative slides.
Jim Steinmeyer presented his recreation of Devant's Golliwog Ball.
Robert Neale spoke on Primitive Conjuring Performances.
Bob Dicksonn showed some rare Spanish Language film footage from the
early 1930's, (produced in USA), including great stuff from Laurel &
Hardy films...a rare filmed recording of Hadji Ali's act...drinking
massive quantities of water and spouting like a firehose...drinking
water again and following it with a bottle of kersosene...which, when
spewed forth, set a miniature house ablaze and then extinguished the
blaze with spouted water!!!
Rene Lavand performed his amazing close-up magic.
Keiichi Yamamoto, on his first-ever trip from Japan, spoke on Early
Japanese magic...with slides...and translation from the ever-amazing
Max Maven.
Edwin Dawes spoke and showed slides regarding the exhaustively
researched mysterious life and death of Colonel Stodare.
Jim Steinmeyer conducted a panel discussion on the relationship between
conjuring and the cinema with panelists Richard Balzer, Richard
Schickel, Albert Whitlock, Bill Taylor and Bill McIlhany. McIlhany
showed some great film footage which added substantially to the
discussion.
Carl Ballantine clowned around with Jay Marshall.
Richard Balzer presented an authentic nineteenth century Magic Lantern
Show.
John Gaughan's restored Maskelyne & Kellar's Levitation, (from the
Carter show), was presented on a specially constructed Victorian Parlor
Proscenium stage!!!
As an added attraction, Rene Lavand conducted a brilliant lecture on
his close-up artistry, with the help of translator Tina Lenert.
This is a thumb-nail sketch of the events of the conference. I may
have left out a few things...in fact, I'm sure I did.
The dealer room had a bounty of books, apparatus and
ephemera....including Houdini's personal signed Bible! I can't recount
all the details here...it would take several days.
Suffice it to say that it was a truly magical weekend. I hope this
skeletal report will bring a flavor of the event to those who could not
be there.

Re: BOBO
Bobo is still alive and well. I see him every year at the TAOM
(Texas) convention. Although I've been introduced to him a couple of
times, it wasn't until this year's convention that I'd ever really
spent any time talking with him. I just happen to mention the fact
that I'd never actually chatted with Bobo to my good friend Terry
Campagna. She's know Bobo for many, many years, and insisted we go
spend some time with him. I'm glad we did. He really is a grand old
gentleman and very pleasant to talk to. I had him autograph a
half-dollar which I now have in a little coin case, it looks pretty
neat. Also he showed me several items that he likes to do. One that
struck me was "Tenkai Pennies". Bobo does it very slow and delibrate
and it does seem very magical. I'd read the effect in _Modern Coin
Magic_, but didn't think much of it (Eugene Burger is so right about
the failure of imagination!). Bobo was kind enough to run through the
mechanics with me until I had them down. The timing does take a while
to get, but the basic mechanics are relatively simple. The hardest
part being the back pinch, but using pennies makes that simple too.
If you're interested you should drop him a note, I'm sure he would
love it.

machine, using my graphics/monitor, and all was OK, but that hardly
tells us anything.

Re: LIFE SAVERS?
Hi Stan,
I also have Lifesavers, but wasn't as impressed as Scott and
others. You're right about nothing you would include in a set
performance for two reasons. First is that this is mostly
"improvised" rather than "impromptu", the difference being,
finding things lying around to assemble an effect when you are
otherwise unprepared. This differs greatly from Weber's
definition of impromptu. If you ever get caught without your pull
or thumb tip, he has some ideas how to assemble one from things
such as gum wrappers and rubber bands. Don't get me wrong... the
book has some good ideas and does make one think, which isn't
half bad in itself. The second reason is the somewhat
controversial statement inside the cover (hidden from view, if
you bought a sealed package or by mail order) stating his
performance restrictions. If you can live with not performing any
of these professionally or on national television, it's not that
bad. After all, as Pete observed, he can do whatever he wants
with his own material. It disturbed me a little to see other
people's work lightly touched upon, possibly making these out of
reach as well.
All in all, I'm still satisfied with "Lifesavers", but more for
the between the lines thinking than the tricks themselves.

There is some good stuff in Lifesavers. There is also some stuff that

had very tight resources might need to choose between it and another
book and they should be aware of the mixed content.

Re: MAGIC AUDITION
Re:Ferrentino's Power Chopper, it was indeed the genuine
Collector's Workshop prop with a humorous addition that I think
he should licence to CW to add to their piece. He added a clock
face over the saw blade, making it look like a modern style
grandfather's clock. The volunteer was much more willing to stick
his hand into the device this way. It wasn't until he was
shackled that the true nature of the device was revealed. I'm not
in a position to say if this was the first time someone thought
of this, but it seems such a natural addition. For John's comedic
style it fit quite well.
David (the other one)
ps. Have you looked at my newest Wizard pic? Someone gave me a
poster called Spell Bound that he got at a D&D convention. I
added the photo of the starlit background with Targa.
Also, do you know of any paint package (besides Targa) that can
handle over 640X480X256 ? I now have a Microtec 300ZX color
scanner, but have nothing powerful enough to handle the edits.

Re: I'M BACK
A belated welcome back from me too! I'm glad you enjoyed your
trip. Italy is a wonderful place. I lived there for about two
years when my dad was in the service and was welcomed everywhere
we went by people willing to share whatever they had with us. I
wish someday to return there.
You're the first one to hear about my thoughts about this month's
M A G I C. After my disappointed outlook of the last issue, I was
happily surprised to see Stan's newest offering. The articles
were timely and well written, his Inside Magic is larger, and
Weber's reviews were more open and informative. Now this is what
I wanted to see all along! I hope he continues improving this
way.
It won't be long and Genii's going to have to run pretty hard
just to keep up!

Re: CPU
If you want a wild, fun thing to have around - sort of a version of
"screen dirt" - you should get Windows 3.0 and something called "After
Dark." After Dark is a package of "screen savers." You walk away from
your system for 5 minutes (or any amount you set) and whatever you were
working on stays, but the screen will go to a protection mode with
different graphics you can select. Some of the selections include
little worms that crawl around eating your screen, bouncing balls,
flying toasters, or a complete aquarium with swimming fish.

Re: MAGIC AUDITION
Ferrentino's Power Chopper sounds interesting! But it is a BIG
departure from the Collector's Workshop patter if he uses a "victim."
Their whole concept was to place the mage in jeopardy.
I didn't know you had uploaded a new Wizard pic. I'll have to take a
look asap! No, I don't know a paint package that goes over
640x480x256! Are you sure you aren't asking me just so I'll be
jealous? Please let me know how the Microtec 300ZX is. Or why not
scan the Vegas picture in? That way I can see for myself! (but upload
it under a new name so that those who want the B&W version can still
get it).

Re: I'M BACK
Thanks for the welcome back, David. I wonder if Italy is different
from years ago when you were there. Florence in particular has so
evolved around the tourist culture even in the last ten years, that it
astounded me.
Re this month's M A G I C: I enjoy the magazine a lot, in a very
different way that Genii. It's more "general interest" in that the
articles are about magic in a broader sense. It also has a more worldy
feel in a sense, as it's not as fraternally oriented toward the Castle
scene and older generations. I think Kaufmann's column is good, and is
very welcome -- the effects are clearly described in good detail. And
Weber's reviews, I agree, I excellent. I wish there were more, better
review columns in all the monthly mags, don't you?

Agree that Lifesavers is a fine book but
am puzzled by the statement that I cannot use the material on TV etc.
I paid something like $10.00 for one of the effects from another source

referring to is the trick of setting a wristwatch ala the Stull Watch

Doing this on TV would make an interesting test case.

Stage rights went to the third girl on the left in Lance Burton

Re: LIFE SAVERS?
If you read Weber correctly he doesn't say you CANNOT DO THIS STUFF
UNDER TV AND BIG TIME CONDITIONS... he says, "Call me"... so you
call him and say, "Hey I am doing the trick that I got from another
source that looks and acts like yours... just want to let you know"
and get on with it.
He really just wants to keep up to speed on what is happening
and if you get $20,000 for doing something HE CREATED he deserves
a piece of the action. Just like a song writer does.
Problem is magicalumpkin's have not acted professional in thier
use of material. That is why almost everyone does the same stuff.
Just think how cool it would be if all the magi out there did
stuff that was written for THEM and nobody copped it... there would
be a lot of creativity and there would be far fewer lousy magi
taking stuff they see and duplicating it in a show 20 minutes later.
.
Great examples: Look at Rene Levand, Slydini, Ricky Jay, Lance
Burton, etc. they are the good ones and they do THEIR OWN brand of
stuff. There are other examples, but if you note... the leaders
do not do the same stuff. Finn Jon, Gaetan Bloom, Tamariz...
