Re: LIFE SAVERS?
I reread Weber and he doesn't say "Call me". He doesn't say
anything about permission. I don't even think you can infer that
from the wording.
.
My point on the watch item is that it isn't his to put in the
book, so how do I need his permission to use an item that I paid
$10.00 for? I should give the person who wrote up the item
_before_ Weber the cut in the action.
.
The same goes for the Pindemonium Routine. If I leave off the
final move.
.
I'll use some of your examples of non-magiclumpkins to further
question your reply.
.
Slydini - are the following his in effect and method?
Coins Through the Table
Linking Rings
.
Ricky Jay
McDonald Assembly with patter from Erdnase.

Baker Dictionary Test

Bill in Envelopes

So it seems that some of the greats - and they are - use other

.
I don't see anything wrong with this as almost all magicians use
material they have paid for or have been taught.

Re: LIFE SAVERS?
Lets see how much I can recall of your message.
Weber stated "call me" in a Panel Discussion at the PCAM, but not
in print, but he did write "without permission in writing" in his
book. The Lecture Notes, I believe stated "call me" as well.
.
His point being that what HE has created he wants credit for, and
basically SOME payment. He is reasonable and I believe paying for
material in a book is awfully cheap if you DO MAJOR TV AND CONCERT
WORK. For the average mage that does the odd club date, stuff for
his friends, and so on... he's not worried about it. He feels if
you are making real money the writer of material is due something.
.
Also much of this came from the CERVON "rights mess" that really
came down hard and was unknown until you broke the seal and opened
the book. Lifesavers DOES HAVE THE CLAUSE ON THE OUSIDE OF THE
BOOK ON THE BACK.
.
Slydini. No, Han Ping Chien goes back to the 1700s and beyond. He
only TEACHES his misdirection and routining and never claimed to
have invented the trick. Tony also never held back rights to do
anything he taught. Linking Rings... oldest known method. However
there are ORIGINAL routines that many have devised and it isn't
fair to COP thier presentations. Like Whit Haden's four ring
routine... Altho he now has it in print... I guess it is OK, as he
does not state NO TV use... so it is fair game now.
.
Ricky Jay... his Routine with the Queens "ala MacDonald Aces" is
partly Erdnase, partly his (patter) the moves are part his, part
Piet Forton and I am sure a few others... It would be STUPID to
present this, a signature trick with Ricky, in a like manner. Tho
there is nothing to stop one... the material is all public domain.
Guys like Ricky, and I don't blame him, get upset when THEY DEVELOP
or FIND something and make it work, and others just jump onto it
without having put in the time, effort and research.
.
Anyone's signature trick should be left along.
.
Ring Flite. Originated by Al Koran with a reel in the keycase. Many
have stolen THAT modus operandi. Tannen, Roth, etc. etc. Gaetan
devised a method for use without a pull. But no one sold the trick
with NO TV or big time useage...
.
I am a great fan of Gaetan, but don't think the thumb tip method is
very good as I never found a ring that would fit. And don't think
the original has been improved. He might use it and have success, or
it might just have been a "lecture item" and a "for sale" item???
Even BEFORE Koran the Flying Ring goes waaaay back, I have the
turn of the century aparatus (Wilmann and Martin ring pulls).
Fred Kaps did it by pure sleight of hand and never used the reel.
.
Tamariz. I don't think he claims the effects, just the presentation
he has devised. Again NO BODY, NO ONE ANYWHERE can present 'LIKE'
Juan... so it doesn't matter what he does. IT IS ALL HIM. I am
not familiar with the Dictionary effect, sorry. Might have seen it
at one time, but can't recall it as I don't go for that kind of
material and it slipped out of my memory bank.
.
Copperfield. Misled. I understand he paid for the use of it on TV.
And Wenk should have PAID HIM... I bet he sold $20,000 WORTH OF 'EM
AFTER DAVID DID IT ON HIS SPECIAL.
.
Seabrooke note in wallet. David (and correctly so) bought the trick
and ALL THE GAGS ETC. WERE IN PRINT WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS. The
trouble is SOME OF THE VERSIONS WERE RIPPED OFF and he got one of
those... THERE WAS NO TV CLAUSE in the instructions.
.
Matter of FACT... Seabrooke GAVE ME THE USA RIGHTS years ago...
before he ever came to this country. I used to do it all the time.
And actually wrote many of the gags and sent to Terry and he put my
gags INTO HIS ROUTINE!!!! When he started to come to the US, I, on
my own... decided to stop doing it, as it was HIS SIGNATURE EFFECT.
Thus, I wrote my own and if someone were to do what I came up with
I would be upset!!!!!
.
In the meantime, Seabrooke called Copperfield and they came to a
mutually agreed amount of compensation to Terry.
.
Kaps. This is a tough one. Fred, when he was very young, was
working as "MYSTICA".... and EVERYTHING he learned was from Henk
Vermeyden. Vermeyden came to the USA and saw material. He taught
some of this to Kaps... the Sticks and Salt Pour came from Roy
Benson. The sticks sequence was retained, but KAPS DID HIS OWN
PATTER... none of the Indian Guide stuff that Benson (one of my
heroes) devised. The Salt Pour was really Paul Fox's gaff and
working... and Fred didn't do it the same way (sequence, presenta-
tion) as Benson... It did bother me a bit, but Fred really changed
the PRESENTATION to fit him... and didn't really achieve a lot of
work and use of the stuff until AFTER BENSON passed away.
.
So... I hope I am accurate on all accounts... I have tried to
recall what I know.
.
Another misnomer with Copperfield was the levitation of a small
boy by putting his hand on the kid's head and he rose... some said
this was taken from Fechner. Wrong, it came from another person in
Europe.
.
When you see his new show and the Flying... the basic is as John
Gaughan design (1984) and the STYLE, MOVES, ACTIONS AND USE OF THE
GLASS CONTAINER are all David and his staff creations.
.
The new part, where (I did not see this yet) he dances with a girl
from the audience is his. He visited Lance Burton to describe
what he was going to do to see if it was OK WITH LANCE (Lance
levitates himself and a woman) -- Lance said "Does she lay on top
of you naked?" David said, "NO"... Lance said, "OK by me, go for it"
... so you see they do communicate. In this day of litigations and
a growing awareness of the originators of THIER RIGHTS it is going
to change.
.
ALL MAGI THAT USE TAPED MUSIC are soon going to be hit with bills
from ASCAP AND BMI for payment to the copyright holders of the
music.
.
That is why I have been preaching to find a writer, have your own
original music written and recorded and pay for the full rights.
.
It is the PROFESSIONAL WAY.
.
Whew... lots to think about.

It would seem that the significance of intellectual property is also
being discussed outside of magic. The following is from the National
Science Foundation Bulletin (Vol. 19, No. 3, November, 1991):
"Global Dimensions of Intellectual Property Rights in S&T
"A major conference on "The Global Dimensions of Intellectual Property
Rights in Science and Technology" will be held at the National Academy
of Sciences, in Washington, D.C., on January 8th and 9th, 1992. The
conference will examine policy issues at the interface of science and
technology (S&T) and intellectual property rights (IPR) - issues that
are becoming increasing important in an era of rapid change in S&T,
international trade, and competitiveness. THe conference, which has
NSF support, will be of interest to professionals and practitioners in
fields of science, engineering, intellectual property, economics, law,
international relations, technology transfer, and development.
"Those interested in attending the conference should call Robin Schoen
at the National Academy of Sciences (334-2236)."

fascinating -- particularly for me some really excellent card work of
the platform variety including some front and back work by Houdini on
video tape + some wonderful card productions and second and bottom
dealing by Sid Radner. Is everyone out there aware of HH & Sidney's
formidable skill with the pasteboards? Sidney raised our collective
consciousness about the Houdini museum in Appleton which can count on
donations from all of us. Weltman brought the HH footage and also HH's
1916 diary. Domingo brought two boxes of relatively priceless
conversation pieces, but it was a comic book that most delighted
me. Diego hadn't noticed that the star of one of the strips was Sidney
Radner -- the card cheat catcher. By the by, the coauthor of our

Re: PUBLIC DOMAIN
I think you're being a bit too cavalier in using the term "public
domain" to describe the elements in Ricky Jay's queen-assembly routine.
More to the point, of course, is the fact that even if those elements
_were_ public domain (and, I contend, they are not), the way in which
they have been put together is clearly Ricky's own, and thus not up for
grabs.
The background on David Copperfield and Terry Seabrooke is rather more
complicated than what you mention; ditto the situation with Lance.
And how do you define the glass box idea in DC's levitation as being
original when Barclay Shaw established it long before?
Fred's salt pour was explicitly derived from Roy Benson's -- the long
pour began with Benson, not with Fox.

Re: LIFE SAVERS?
My question is - If something in the book has been in print or is
in public domain - what do we owe the creator.
.
Weber and Cervon have these messages in the front if the book-
which many people dont read - How do we deal with them?
.
My main point in my message was that the people you mentioned
were not as original as you suggested. Everyone uses something-
and has a right to - that others have created. This is what makes
the Art of Magic advance. Where would we be if all of these
people had never performed these routines?
.
Where would we be if the Elmsley Count had been kept by those in
the Underground? I'm sure those who hate packet tricks would
think we would be better off, but the development of magic made
great leaps.
.
Not all of the things in Life Savers are Weber's. He gives credit
in many places, but as far as I can see has not received
permission to reprint the ideas. "Swatch This" is not credited;
and I paid $10.00 for the idea. How can he insist that I need his
permission to perform?

Glad to hear that there are many who were Benson fans. I'm
constantly irritated by people who mention the Don Allen Bowl
Routine. Roy was a _great_ performer who showed that being a
comic performer did not mean that you did not have to be a good
technician.

into developing ideas in the Jaks mode. We went to Magic Shops -

The effect Brahman Bell I contributed to the Phoenix was a Jaks

Am sure there are others, like Wells... (actually I would venture
to guess that ANYONE that ever saw him perform would have become
a lifetime fan). Latest anecdote: Benson was booked to do a big
money show for Reynolds Aluminum... they flew him to the city they
were meeting in... by the time the show was to begin the audience
consisted of nearly all enebriated bodies... Roy handed out the
rings and one guy, holding a ring, was dead drunk, fell over and
put a DEATH GRIP on the ring. Roy couldn't get it out of his hands
no matter how hard he tried!

Abbott's (wherever they are) sold a beautiful "fluted" mirror glass.
And a series of gaffed glasses, all made with the same basic glass.

One might look for some and make your own. Glue Mylar onto any

Re: LIFE SAVERS?
You make some good points. I don't have the research or memory,
to know what is and what isn't his in the book.
.
It is not an easy call. Evolution surely is important, you are
correct.
.
Let me cite two examples that I feel are worthy of note.
.
Jim Steinmeyer says, of whether or not a trick is changed enough
to be called "new" (THIS WAS IN RESPONSE TO A GUY THAT SAID HE
CHANGED THE ORIGAMI BOX)... "Can you do the trick on the same show
as the original trick and the audience percieves it to be a
DIFFERENT trick?"
.
Milt Larsen said, "Magic is like music. It is OK for someone to
do the same trick as another, as long, as like in music, the
arrangement is not the same." He likes to see what different,
creative people do with effects that others do. Hmmmmmm
.
Again, there is really nothing new. And I just don't really have
any answer, other than people have to use common sense, judgement
and their conscience when they work. And this doesn't mean just in
magic.

Hmmm... You are hitting a chord with me, Biro. I decided to take a
break from magic books, so right now I'm rereading John Brunner's The
Shockwave Rider (1975, Harper & Row). In it he postulates a future
based on the things you are suggesting. Not a very cheerful book, but
one I have always found to be most profound.
Here is a possible "Lifesaver" (the title of this thread [?]) for you
- the new "three is a crowd" law went into effect in Santa Monica
today. If you are waiting to use the rest room and there are three
people in line, you can go use the other rest room. BUT if there are
not three people waiting, you face a $500 fine for illegal rest room
switching. I can see it now, "But officer, there WERE three people
there a moment ago..."

Reason? Well, have you heard about Amway? Just kidding!!
Actually, my wife won the evening for something or other she entered.
We don't know 250 people which is why I invited anyone and everyone who
is remotely interested to go. We scheduled it close to Christmas so it
would be sort of a holiday party. It will be mostly either
international bankers (my wifes work) or Postal employees (my work).
Two groups that have absolutely nothing in common!
I may have failed to mention that we are each given two tickets to buy
any drinks for a dollar each. After that it is regular prices.
For two bux you can have a couple of drinks and a meal of appetizers.
They have a dance floor and a DJ but I am unsure as to what time they
start. Once again, I would have to know by December 5th how many would
like to attend so they know how much to cook.

Europeans, in general, have a better handle on social practices vs.
government regulation. Without reproducing it here, I would commend
you to an article, "Smoking Permitted," by William E. Schmidt, the New
York Times London correspondent. In it he points out that many
Europeans see much of our culture as one that "too easily surrenders
itself, en masse, to the reigning health fad or fashion." He mentions
that "When President Bush was felled a few months ago by his heart
flutters, since attributed to a disorder of his thyroid gland, one of
the themes that ran through the British press coverage was a kind of
puzzlement bordering on indignation that a man of Mr. Bush's advanced
age would imperil himself and the whole of the Western alliance by
insisting on jogging."

I think it very doubtful that any of these restrictions could be upheld
in a court case -- but that is sort of beside the point. The question
is -- can you publish something in a book and still retain restrictions
about its performance? Certainly you retain manufacturing (commercial)
rights -- but beyond that it gets cloudy. My own feeling is that if
you want big bucks for someone doing it on TV then YOU DON'T PUT IT IN
PRINT; you keep it exclusive.
I also feel -- as I indicated elliptically in my Genii piece -- that
an inventor has the right to do what he or she wants with a creation,
and the prospective buyer can make a decision based on that -- as long
as the understanding is up front.

Hey all!
After getting some excellent advice from our courageous sysop, I
called the Wiltern theater and spoke with someone from group
sales. This woman was EXTREMLY helpful. She had me reserve 25
seats, although we only have 20 reservations from our members.
She said that as long as we have a minimum of 20 people, we can
reduce the 25 seats to whatever. This means that if you have a
last minute guest (last minute meaning after my deadline, not
Sat. Nov. 30) please contact me. I am VERY pleased with how
everything is going, and am looking forward to the day with worms
on my tongue. (baited breath?)
The following members are planning on attending:
David Lichtman
Stan Lake
Jerry Burton
Evan Katz
and of course, Kevin E. Curtin
This group of people should be worth the price of admission on
its own! So not only do you get to spend the day with a MAGIC!
group, you also get to see David Copperfield!
If all people who have reserved tickets with me would send $28.55
per ticket to me, I will pay the bill, and we will all go to see
a great show on a great day.
Send all checks to:
Kevin E. Curtin
3058 Flanders
Riverside, CA 92507
I will then pool the checks, and send the Wiltern one check for
the whole shebang.
Thanks to everyone who has made this a fun excursion to

Looks like good solid stuff. Are you familiar with Karrell Fox
handling of cigarette (or whatever) thru quarter? He has a gal
hold the coin on top of a beer or soda bottle. He tells her to
close her eyes. Pushes cigarette thru and into bottle. (Like a
Powers of Darkness/Paper Balls over the head) and then tells her
to ask others how he did it. When they say "He pushed it thru
the quarter" she don't believe, of course. Good stuff.

Re: WHAT
He uses the Feather instead of the Quarter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.
Actually, I would like to get the gaff made ala Mike Weber using a
key. Nice handling available and a feather looks more like a key
than a quarter!
.
Seriously, folk. It might make a good routine to use the Quarter
ala Karrell Fox, then do a swap and stuff the quarter inside the
bottle... (someone makes a folding key too if you are into key
theme magic).
.
I have a seven keys to baldpate (someone will not like that word)
in which I have the lock on a beautiful replica of an olde English
Chastity Belt... the dude with the correct key gets to keep the
girl holding the belt... Ken Brooke was to release this with my
routine but had his stroke and passed away before a series of items
he had planned to release were completed. Also had a "Nemo Rope"
act... All will be in book II. (Eleven? No two)

Re: HARKEY
Just returned from David Harkey Lecture in Baltimore. Since his
book received mixed notices, I was anxious to see the material
performed.
.
Very engaging performer. Here are the effects in the lecture and
the pages in Simply Harkey.
.
.....Body Language p.19 ****
.
Production of four coins. Clever moves and in interesting
principle.
.
.....Dirty Pool p.135 ****
.
Black balloon changes into an eight ball.
.
.....East Meets West p.158 ****
.
Shove a pencil through a bill. Impromptu version of Misled. No
gimmic and everything borrowed.
.
.....Over the Edge p.68 ****
.
Four coins to a pilsner glass. Great ideas as the glass in held
in the center instead of the hand hovering over the glass as in
most versions. Uses a jumping shuttle pass he credits to Danny
Korem. Looks great.
.
.....Under Fire p.91 ****
.
Card is found inside and stapled to a matchbook. Very clever
handling.
.
Break......
.
.....Flash Point p.99 ***
.
Production of four coins under pointing finger. Looks good.
.
.....Spinner p.163 **
.
Prediction with a round sticker and a soda can. Clever but not
good in practical situation. Lot of setup.
.
.....Gold Rush p.185 ***
.
Borrowed ring placed on a wrist watch band and penetrates the
watch comming off the other end.
.
.....Goldfinger p.13 ****
.
Borrowed ring on finger penetrates the finger. Other versions
with the idea were Satin Finish p.246 where the ring vanishes
from the finger and appears in a purse and The Transposition p.16
where a borrowed lady's ring changes on the finger to a man's
ring. Interesting principle.
.
.....Spin Off (Not in book, but sold separately.) ****
.
Coin placed in card box changes places with a card which is on
top of box.
.
.....The Gathering p.236 ***
.
Four coins to a purse. Good method - old effect.
.
.....Point of No Return (Not in book - props and instruction
sheet sold) ****
.
An initialed business card changes places with a card impaled on
a safety pin. Very startling change.
.
.....Flipper Coin demonstration. (Not in book - had some to sell.) *
.
Shown as an idea for coins through table. Really just
an idea, not a complete routine.
.
.....Crystals p.23 ***
.
Glass marble is inflated to become a vial. Filled with salt and
heated becomes a small hour glass. Then the items revert to their
original state. Shown but not explained.
.
Performed for about 2 1/2 hours with short break. Great lecture
with some baffling effects. I thought it was going to be too
cutsie-pie with some of the strange props, but was very strong.
.
Yes the book is worth getting as there are some new ideas and
methods. < |<

Lemme know if Faro at Gun show this weekend. Yes, I am busy but what
is new. I guess getting this farm here and not selling other place
yet, etc is making me go a bit faster. I also decided until I get muy
feet back on the ground that I'm basically only gonna respond to
messages directed to me. I'm also working on getting healthier. I
haven't smoked since at your house last month and taking long walks
everyday. Having a mile or so to walk on the Nuevo DeCarlo is great
and I can dress however I want, put feathers in my hair and carry
a pistola. Not much different from DC in that respect I guess. Magic
wise I am joining the Nashville Magic Club and also going to meetings
of the other area clubs drumming up business for the Music City Con
clave. Am going in to have a brew with the pres of said club tonight
to see what is going on. Also until house in MD sells, I'm prob
gonna have to get a job. The buz hasn't been pushing my tables since
and I have exclusive with him I can't go nowhere else til next june
so kinda stuck on that un. Got some great new projects (non table)
that are gonna kick off after the first of the year. Putting benches
into the shop this weekend and finished moving every shop thing
except wood lathe and big table sander which I'll get next time
as I didn't have room and had to get some of Glo's stuff too. Got

In case y'all didn't know it... Harbin designed the Zig Zag to be
done in Cabaret shows, surrounded. Matter of fact, Ned had his
in two canvas carrying bags. He could walk into a show situation
with the two bags slung on his shoulders and a pair of smaller
bags in hand.
He would then set the Zig Zag up, assemble it(!) in front of
the audience, pattering away and do the trick, take it down and
pack it... all as part of the effect!

MAGIC!-NL Fri 15 Nov 91 13:28
Arnaud Van.Rietschoten posted the following msg:
Today I received the first TV show NHK (Japanese National TV) has
broadcasted 04 November 1991 in Japan.
Besides some short clips from contestants and the traditional
impression from the visiting country, the show featured:
Topaz from Germany doing his swinging act with glasses and timble
manipulations with wandtips.
The Pendragons with metamorfosis.
Mahka Tendo from Japan with his brilliant card manipulations.
Tempest & Gottet with their
double act.
Rene Lavand with his Oil & Water routine and his unbelievable 3
balls in the coffeecup routine.
James Cielen with his colorchanging doves. Amos Levkovics with
the finale of his dove act.
Of course they ended with Vladimir Danilin the grand-prix winner.
You see the selection they (NHK) made was rather predictable. It
was surprising to see they added Rene Lavand as close-up act
between all stage magic, where usually they have a slight
preference for Stage acts only.
We'll see what the next show brings.....

Only those that steal are wrong. If you PURCHASED the Harbin Book,
you then, as I do, have the rights to perform his creations (that
are in the book) -- hence my Chair Suspension and Zig Zag, built

Those thousands of Zig Zaggers should be made to line thier boxes

Argh...
.
Just home (2 ayem) from seeing Andre Kole. He has a new illusion
called "Just Passing Through"...
.
Assistant lays flat on a table. Two other assistants slide a
boxlike cover over her that has no ends... so head and feet are
visible.
.
Andre then pierces down thru the top with a long fluorescent light
tube... NOT DONE...
.
He then puts a ring with small light bulbs on top of the cover.
Then he climbs on top of the set up and steps on thru, finally
his whole body is thru and he walks back and forth...
.
Somewhat like, but horizontal and different, of course, to the
"Interlude" of the Pendragons... Weird and interesting... Audience
(about 2,000) went crazy over it.
.
He closed with his "walking on water" which is a fooler.
.
In chat after he had just seen David C and DC has added another
variant to his flying THAT i HAVE NOT YET SEEN.... ARGH....
.
He takes a girl from audience, and Like Superman with Lois Lane,
holds on to her and flies around the stage... got to see this...
At the Wiltern... you lucky devils you.... yar....

I have a minor> problemoooo....uch....
.
Placing a floppy into the NEC Laptop external disk drive, I get
System Error, Abort Retry... with the disk with my Database (books)
upon same... with any other disk it seems to boot ok...
.
Is this a big time ARGH? No recent backup as I had just finished
putting in about 80 entries.
.
I did take this diskette over to Byron Walker's last night to put
into his COMPAQ and look up some books to see what I had, compared
to some he had fo'sale...
.
He knows nothing about computers and was PANIC STRICKEN when I put
a disk into his machine... saying, "Oh, God... the company told
me to never let anyone put any disks into the machine -- they are
afraid of any virus programs!"
.
I assured him this was clean and actually never copied anything,
just read only from the A drive.
.
It was 2 ayem and we were tired... and for some foggy reason, due
to he being so nervous (I couldn't believe it) (Matter of fact he
is so NON COMPUTER he is thinking of Quitting his job because they
now ask him to enter orders and sales into the machine!
.
Anyway... there is a foggy possiblity that I did NOT EXIT THE
PROGRAM PROPERLY... just hurried up and took it out... but then
I do recall going back into C drive from the A prompt before I
switched his machine off... so I mustave exited? Right? No?
.
Help.

.
Still couldn't get the program to come up... but was able to use
'LAPLINK' from my giant computer (Oh, all this was with the Laptop)
and move the data files from Lap to big... and after about 2 hours of
near death sweating, hammering on keys and answering questions on
screen that I had no Idea what old Mr. Norton was talking about... it
is fixed.... breath again, no ARgh...

OK, I'm going to upload a zip file named BIRO.ZIP that will have 2

grab all the msgs, and log off - all automatically. The second is
MAGICREP.ASP which will log in and upload all your replies. The file
that is downloaded is MAGIC.LOG and you need to create MAGIC.REP for
uploads. There is also a file called ASPCOMP that will create the
MAGICLOG.ASX and MAGICREP.ASX. All you will have to do is change the
**** for your real password. The other change is to add MAGICLOG and
MAGICREP to 2 entries to dial magic. I assume you are using PCPLUS,
if not let me know. I have a public domain copy of PCPLUS that I will

Pete,
You are one step closer to becoming a computer expert! Every
person who works with computers has to spend a prerequisite
amount of hours trying to figure out something that they have no
idea about. Everyone who tries to help uses words that make no
sense and have no connection with what they should. FATs, and
Clusters, and Sectors on and on it goes. Then, one day, people
start coming to you with their problems. And you realize that
while you are fixing their computer, you are using words like FAT
and Cluster and Sector.
Ah, the great Mandela.
Enjoy!

David,
I had heard of this guy. I have the strangest diet in the world,
so I can't criticize his. People have said I should be dead
years ago. All of the followers of this guy (I don't know his
name, so I'll just keep referring to him as "this guy") said that
they hadn't achieved whatever they were trying to achieve so they
were cutting back on food slowly. Never met one who had cut food
out entirely, but I met some pretty thin folks. I wonder if
there is any origin in some of the eastern religion's practices
of ahimsa.
I have had occasion to meet some interesting denizens of the deep
myself, but strangly enough, there is something about being
underwater that (at least in my case) disolves the fear. I have

Re: JAPAN
I have just confirmed my travel schedule after entertaining in
the Orchid Room of Hotel Okura. After returning from the "island"
I will go to Hong Kong for about 5 days, then back to Tokyo. I will
perform on Dec. 7, Dec. 16, Dec. 19 and Dec. 20., thaen back to
the USA on Dec. 22.
I really have been interested in the connection between the country
of Italy and Japan.....in the tone of Columbus and the similarity in
many words........Italian has many words that are almost the exact
sounding words in Japanese......Marco Polo was a real adventurer....
Even Columbus when he sailed the ocean blue in 1492 originally
dreamed about visiting Japan as his destination.......and to
honor or commemorate this thought.....a sailing project to duplicate
Columbus has been undertaken by the Caravel Santa Maria Foundation.
The new "Santa Maria" left Barcelona in July and will set forth on
Kobe, Japan in April 1992.....more than 12 million was raised for
this project...........magicians take note, what can we do to
honor our historical interest?
It is interesting about books you buy for intentions to read...the
other day I was at a used book shop and picked up a paper back magic
book, "Great Secrets of Master Magaicians" by Bruce Elliot. It was
published in 1962 and a third printing was completed in 1967....good
book, has all of the great effects....card on ceiling, rice bowls,
miser's dream, razor blade swallowing, billard balls, cups and balls
and much more. Was this an original expose to non magicians?
Seems like it could be..........I don't know Mr. Elliot but I
wonder if that thought ever crossed his mind......interesting how
he inscribed his dedication......"for Judy....the cutest trick I
know"........sorry, but what did he mean by that. The word trick
for a female is a hooker........I hope he didn't mean that....any
way the book was illustrated by none other than Stanley Jaks, Dr.
Jaks to us magicians.......good book....I am now going to brush up
on my miser's dream routine. I will go down to the buffet and
borrow a stainless steel pot for catching coins and making a great
deal of noise.........
to be continued......

Re: JAPAN
Geno,
I have a copy of "The Best in Magic" by Bruce Elliott in my hot
little hands, and in the introduction he says:
In the Foreword of my first book, "Magic as a Hobby,"
Orson Welles made this point: "It is entirely possible
that this excellent book should never have been
published....not for general sale."
His reasoning was that since magic is dependent
on mystery, any book or explanation serving to pull
aside the curtain of mystery does a disservice to magic
in general.
In the golden days of vaudeville this point would
have been well taken, for when the goateed greats like
Herrmann and Kellar were performing in every town, big
and small, magic was brought directly to the people, and
a person enchanted by it soon discovered ways of learning
how to become a magician.
But today, with vaudeville dead, with stage shows no
longer touring, (Blackstone is the last of the old-time
magicians to perform a full evening show), with too little
magic being shown on television--it seems to me that the
new magician must come from the ranks of those who read
books like this one. Otherwise magic is certain to become
a dead art.
Since I love magic dearly I would not like to see it
fade away, behind other hobbies.
He goes on to talk about the particular tricks in that book.
"The Best in Magic" was published in 1956 and is dedicated "for
Bunny and Judy, my favorite tricks."
I have to assume that "tricks" didn't have the same connotations
(or at least Mr. Elliott was unaware of them) in 1956 as they do
today.
Japan sounds like FUN! See it all once again for me.
Enjoy!
Kevin

Re: TIPS ON THUMB TIPS
My wife and I saw James Hamilton in the Parlour room of the Castle last
night. I was sitting there thinking "Why is he being so open with that
thumb tip. I hope nobody notices". My wife said, "Hey, that's a good
looking thumb tip he's got there. Much more natural looking than some
of the others I've seen here." (!) We were sitting more than halfway
back so I'm sure many others spotted it also. I've heard that you
should be able to use a bright red or a chrome plated tip as they
should never be visible anyway. It seems Mr. Hamilton's theory is if
you don't act as if anything is there, no one will notice. That might
have some merit if it was a perfect match for your skin tone but his
wasn't. I once saw Penn and Teller on David Letterman and Teller used
a tip which was as close to a perfect match as I have ever seen yet he
never let his hand remain motionless where it could be spotted.
Other than Mr. Hamilton I have never seen another performer be so open
with their tip. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

No, the "New Phoenix" period was post-Elliott, when it was taken over
by Jay Marshall and Norman Jensen, and after that Don Tanner, finally
Karl Fulves who morphed it into "Pallbearers Review."
Bruce Elliott founded the "Phoenix" with Walter Gibson, and edited it
through 300 issues. (Gibson dropped out rather early on.)

Hey, California! If you guys are still reading, try to
catch the Amazing Jonathan on Fox Sunday Comics
TONIGHT. He does some great blindfold bits I haven't
seen before.

Tell you the truth, Tabman, I envy you that spread with the Canadian
geese, the pond, the woods, etc. I often think that if we didn't have
to live in Los Angeles, we'd be back in the Southeast enjoyin' life.
Guess I can console myself by goin' to the Castle - but you are right,
the magic there is not as strong as the magic of geese landing in the
sunset.

I think it is hard not to get "wired" when you travel. After too many
sleepless nights/days around the World I've come up with a couple of
techniques that seem to help me. 1) I've got one of those neck pillows
that inflates and fits around your neck like a collar. I always use it
on long flights. 2) I drink lots of fruit juices, especially orange
and grapefruit juice, during and after the flight. Don't know if these
things would help everyone, but they seem to help me.

Re: ROBOT AT TAPER
Hi, Jer -
I'm semisomnambulant from an excellent dinner (Thai crab cakes, curried
rice and artichoke salad, chicken stuffed with goat's cheese, and
tiramisu) but I wanted to tell you that one of the stars of the current
Mark Taper production, Alan Ayckbourn's Henceforward (thru December
29th), is supposed to be a robot nanny - NAN300F. While the role is
quite obviously performed by a human, she is not described in the
playbill, which includes the line "and featuring NAN300F as herself."
The play is pretty complex (I was almost tempted to call it "theater of
the abstruse") but, as is usual for the Taper, the production and the
acting are superb. You might want to check it out.

Re: JAPAN
Elliott was editor of The Phoenix, to which most of the material in
CLASSIC SECRETS OF MAGIC (original title of the book you mention) was
due. He also was a pro editor of magazines and a fiction writer, and
contributed to The Jinx, etc. Judy is Judy Elliott, his daughter --
and I don't know about the custom in Vegas, but anywhere else a trick
(in modern slang) is a hooker's customer. Elliott was writing forty
years ago, when it did not have that connotation at all.

Re: TIPS ON THUMB TIPS
Stan,
Did you see the Penn and Tellers special ("Don't Try This at
Home") where they gave the entire audience thumb tips?
Many of my friends didn't notice the tips even after playing the
tape back. Perception is an interesting ally.
Enjoy!
