Were you around NY at the time? Himber Ring era. And was it Willy
Schneider that made the stuff? That was my recollection of the
story. I used to be close to all those guys, Schneider, Schwartz,
Levy, etc.... and lectured for them a number of times.

Re: JAPAN

If you have whatever size cards YOU wanna use... use 'em. Nobody
has the right to tell you you are a sissy for using toy cards.
If you can palm bridge sized cards better (hand size) use them.
Laymen don't have a clue. Size means nothing.
.
I do know that many moves ARE EASIER with the wider Poker cards
because of the Leverage afforded the wider surface.
.
Andrus uses Bridge cards because they sleeve better and the shifts
he does are easier thanks to the lesser distance things have to
go to clear a bridge width deck.
.
Some of the most effective reactions to my card work has been with
beat up, wrinkled, incomplete decks of cards people drag out of a
kitchen drawer for me to work with.
.
"It was amazing... did all these miracles with MY OLD DECK OF CARDS,
not the usual trick kind magicians use!" - is a common reply that
is often heard in these conditions.
.
Some time ago, before Poker size double facers were readily
available, I used Bridge cards in my convention close up shows
to do Versa Plus (a trick that relied on double face card that you
destroyed each show).

Re: PK LECTURE

The book started as a gag... Tabby and I were chatting about Busby
and "The Man Who Was Erdnase" and decided to write one up on the
Man who invented the Linking Rings... So we wrote the chapter and
it started to grow. I went to Byron Walkers to see about looking
at some antiquarian books that had the linking rings within the
covers... found much good stuff... but AMAZINGLY very little early
stuff on the sourece. Most said, "Its origins are unknown... etc.
This made me mad and curious. Then I had a lot of stuff on the
finger rings so decided to include. The most important thing of
mine was the creation of the effect Fred Kaps used on TV, that of
getting a borrowed ring onto the stem of a champagne glass. A few
variants were claimed by others and I got some good letters, etc.
and comments on that... then I found that there were a number of
clever things, like the bent rings coming out of the audience,
and the real creator had not been given proper credit.
.
Then the variations (one I used for years) on George Blake's
Perverse Rings is discussed (Topper Martyn version, etc.)...
Then I got into the standard handlings, Cardini discovering the
oversized ring...
.
MY STEALING JAY MARSHALL ROUTINE, THEN WHY I REALIZED THAT WAS
WRONG... AND TALKED ABOUT IT...
.
Jay give me several amazing anecdotes, including some about Benson
and Mullholland and material on OTHER THINGS PEOPLE LINK, like
Pool cue racks, Toilet seats, Tamborines...
.
Then at the L.A. Historic Conf. H. Yamamoto presented the first
known written record of the effect....
.
And now I am tracking down material from the Dark Ages on the
European continent... from early woodcuts, etc.
.
I have over 100 pages typeset already (Ventura Publishing program
on the PC)... and soon will be doing the photo shoot on the
contemporary stuff.
.
Am also trying to gather photos of magi doing the effect.
.
Anyone that has pix of anybody doing the rings. Linking, finger,
etc... would appreciate the loan for the book.
.
Whew... that's only part of the story.... tanks..

Sometimes the wheels we get NEED re-inventing. Especially if you
beleive the MAJORITY of dealer advertising.
.
A friend of mine recently paid a ton for a trick where a ring
jumps out of a wooden base and appears in a covered (glass dome)
Champagne glass.
.
A PIECE OF CRAP!
.
Great idea but needs to be re invented by a quality maker! They
barely sanded the wood and the hole for the ring is so narrow you
would be lucky if a round wire would fit in it! And if anyboduy
looks at it from about 6 feet away the secret is tipped.

Scotty's finger ring routine was developed in the early '70's. Then
we got Roy Johnson's great routine and discovered to our horror that
much of the routine had ALREADY been done by Johnson. Much of the
first attempt was abandoned and new material added. Since it was a
three phase routine and Tolken was all the rage about that time, I
named Scotty's routine "The Ring Triology" when I wrote it up for the
lecture notes. It remains one of my favorite routines from Scotty's
material.

People must be fascinated by Thing, and I also think it's due to the

Re: JAPAN-HONG KONG

Off to Hong Kong this afternoon to relax and get some shirts made.
I will also find some silk to bring back for magic.
Today I went on the Subway, and that was a real experience.
It is just like the movies.....a free for all if you want to sit
down, and women and children have no preference, unless you are
old.......it is very efficient and easy to understand....just follow
the signs. The cost was 160 yen, or about $1.25.
I went down to the Akihabara district and looked at plastic food
samples....they are incredible.....but real expensive...for
instance two eggs sunny side up are about $35 US, but they look
so real you get hungry........
I saw a Japanese comedian in the Asakusa View Hotel, he was doinf sit
e (sight) gags. The first one he did was take out his handkerchief
and then wipe his nose on his sleeve. He did not use his hank....
Then he made a big deal out of straightening out his tie. This
type of material reminds me of a magician called ALI, "The Thief
of Bad Gags", this was his sort of humor........he was a friend
of Harry Stanley....funny stuff this Japanese guy who is named,
Nishijima.......He did another one with a hat.....took it off and
made a big to-do about getting it on correctly.....I think
Gleason would have loved this guy, and probably Nishijima was
a student of Gleason and Carson.....Carson used to lift a great
deal of Gleason's material.....such as the idea behind KARNAK.
I hear about this Japanese magician called Marek.....I will try to
find him....they say he does pretty good close-up magic. I found
out that this town is ripe for a good close-up magician, but
the people prefer Americans or Europeans over their native sons.
They like our style and ways...........

That place is in Goodsprings........but a place for old equipment
is near Indian Springs, about 100 miles out of Las Vegas. I found
a Will and Finck BJ table, claw legs and all.......Went into a local
bar and my friend pulled the rope, just inside the door. The
entire patronage turned to us and applauded...by yanking on the
Miner's bell, it was a local custom to by a round of drinks. Oh yes,
this town was MINA, Nevada. The we looked at the hats that were

Frogs in MAGIC? i am perplexed to the nature of the frog within the
kindered art. Was it a performing frog? I have seen a stuffed frog
sawing another stuffed frog in half. but to a modern day performer, I
know of such instance. MAYBE it was second on the bill for the CHICKEN

Hi there Jim!
Well, I received the newsletter form you and thank you very much!
I really appreaciate you sending me the issue but as a grinder one must
allready know the utmost importance of Mr. Acer and Mr. Well's columns.
this was one of the first things i learned as I progressed in magic.
The _dale carnagie_ course helped too, but.......anyway, the magic in
the issue is pretty neat and i cant wait to try out the sweet & low
trick or the wallet one either! I would like to know what other general
intrest articals you have done (the magic alone is great, but what do
you have for filler???) the BOOK REVIEWS were very informative and
right on with MIKE WEBER and "Life Savers". I think he is overrated,
yet a very polished entertainer. The effects he does when he does are
quite astonishing, but he spends too much time in the bathroom!!!!!!
I have not yet purchased the other items mentioned in your reviews but
will use them as reference! Well, I gotta get ready to go grind!!!!! I
am at this restaurant four nights a week and tonight (friday) is very
busy! Oh, by the way.....Here is a question for your panel of experts:
_TIPPING_-If (and you should be) you are getting paid by the restaurant
to entertain their clientel......is it proper to solicite, not
solicite, or not accept tips altogether? (even if they force it on
you?) The reasson is that the management at the establishment where i
do my THANG has asked me to refuse tipe due to the fact that they pay
me to be there?!?!?!?! Is this confuseing or what????

Lots of high-impact original magic perfect for restaurant and walk-

a reasonably good use for the pitcher). The things that get lost on the

the effect!

Re: INLOG

TO: Tommy Wonder

Tommy - Was just thinking of you this evening! Remembering your doing
Squirmly at the Castle. Yes, your local registration is definitely
active. To read only recent messages, you can take a look at the
"Highest Message On System" line that appears and then use a number
about 100 less in your read request. So, the first time you log on
back here in the States, instead of R;* (or RC;* if you are capturing)
you use R;nnn+ (the letter R followed by a semi-colon [;] followed
by the number of the first message you want to read followed by a PLUS
[+] sign) or for a capture you use RC;nnn (again with a number in
place of nnn but here a plus sign isn't necessary). After that first
time, you will be able to use R;* or RC;* for your later log ons.

Wish you were going to be passing thru Los Angeles. It would be a
delight to see you again. Hope you have a good trip over!

Whenever you get a BAD CRC message, it means (in all probability)
that something was sent wrong. There are several causes of this,
not that it matters, because the file is usually SCREWED UP.

I've been thinking about David's message, and realized we said two
different things. If after you saved the file you downloaded, your
computer tells you that there is a CRC error, then you have a problem.
If during the downloading your computer tells you that there is a CRC
error, and continues to download, then the computer has taken care of
the problem by re-downloading the affected block.
Sorry for any confusion.

Is Bruce do*ing anything different in the close-up room? The last

I would make a special trip to see a fourth time. I saw Christopher

You are on to something here! (RE: "Pick a card"). While Geno is in

and Geno to do a GLOBAL CARD TRICK. Yeah, it has been done from space
(picture is here in MAGIC! files). But we MUST figure out a way to do
a terrestrial version! I ain't smart enough to figure out how, but
maybe you or someone can. The only "rule" is that the trick has to be
"genuine" and has to involve Geno while he is still in Orient and
someone (Arnaud? Tommy Wonder?) via MAGIC-NL in the Netherlands. Got
any ideas?????

Re: BAD CRC

Kevin -

If you are using X-Modem, Y-Modem, Z-Modem or any of the other error
checking/correcting protocols (almost anything but ASCII transfer), a
"Bad CRC" or anything else during a file transfer MEANS NOTHING. The
transfer protocol will simply resend the bad block. Only if the
problem is so bad that the file simply can't be transfered (line noise
that blocks seven successive attempts, for example) will the transfer
be terminated. Otherwise, all it means is "some line noise hit, but
the block has been transfered properly again."

There are circumstances in which a "bad CRC" means something, but it is
NOT during a file transfer. So even if you see such a message, if you
have the file complete it is OK.

stuff with a degree of care. I assume that in the case of really good
stuff (Mike Close's Workers/Max's stuff) the published version has been
honed and really thought out and so you have to make the changes as
good as the "original." You have to get "inside" the trick and totally
understand it before you can really make changes that will make it good

Re: REPLY

Pete,
.
Sorry for my delayed reply on some of your message but I was in
Belgium for the benefit of the IQ level of both countries.
.
First as you must have understood I am, unfortunately, not coming
to the US, Tommy Wonder is the lucky one. Speaking about visiting
the US and Japan, Tommy told me that travelling to Japan from
Holland is just as cheap/expensive whether you fly directly to
Japan from Holland or take a 'little' detour via the US.
Certainly an attractive option for the FISM visit in 1994.
Maybe we could link a dutch/european cheapo-but-goodo with your
cheapo-but-goodo.
.
About the Ross Coins. I've never heard of those coins, but will
ask Richard next week when I see him. Are you sure you are not
talking about the FISM 88 coins. Those coins, specially made for
FISM 88 in The Hague, were produced with faces from Fred Kaps and
Okito. Maybe nice to know that based on those coins the dutch
Magic Dealer 'Monnikendam's Magic World' has recently released
a special set of trick coins, coin boxes, based on those Kaps and
Okito boxes (little sales talk....).
.
About the Kaps tapes. The 2 efforts I took to contact dutch TV
producers were without result. Lots of the material that is from
the old days has been erased. We also had in the late 60's a fire
in a TV studion complex that is the cause many black/white shows
are not obtainable anymore.
However a few weeks ago I was informed that someone saw a Kaps
recording with a friend that might be interesting. Will see Dick
Koornwinder next tuesday will check on him for his results.
.
For the project it might be interesting to have some interviews
with some of his old dutch friends. If I can be of help with that
please let me know. I will be able to interview Bob Driebeek, Dick
Harris and anyone else you might want to be taped. We can discuss
the subject at a later date. For this it would be better to arrange
good quality camera's. Please check with Joe.

Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:

From: Tommy Wonder
To: Pete Biro
subject: divers

Hello Pete,
Do I understand that you will organise a tour for FISM to go to
Japan? This woyuld be good, because I think a lot of people from
Europe would like to combine the trip with may be a stop in Vegas
and the Magic Castle. Also, for contestants with a lot of luggage
it is much, I mean MUCH cheaper to fly via the states. Direct
flights from Europe to Japan charge the luggage by the kilo! In
my own case that would cost with the cheapest flight around
$6000. If I fly through the states, the luggage is charged per
bag and also I had a ticket to Japan bought in the US where prices
for tickets are a lot cheaper. Now the whole trip costs me,
including overweight $ 1900. So I am saving more than $4000 by
doing it this way! You can see, that it would be very interesting
for people with luggage, and you should be able to get a lot of
magicians from Europe interested in your tour. But even for
people without overweight, it is a little cheaper to fly via the
states, provided that the part of the trip from the US to Japan
is bought in the states.
I really hope that you or someone else will organise such a

Hi Geno! I'll be flying in to Tokyo myself on December 3rd for a
little over two weeks. Will you still be around that long? I thought
you were going to return by the end of November, but it would be
wonderful to see you or Tommy Wonder while in Japan. It's strange, but
I see more of my friends in foreign countries than at home!
Best of luck with the rest of your trip - I've really enjoyed the

Actually you MUST BE POLITE. If you turn someone down, or if you
have to... just say something like, "Oh, thank you, but your tip
was your enjoyment and reaction to the magic! -- besides that, the
waiters will be jealous... Thanks anyway!"
.
As an aside - when doing close up at a convention - a couple of
times I used to put out a little sign that read, "YOUR TIPS ARE MY

One JAL airlines there is no question that he service and staff are

drawback ismthe smoking problem....I have a seat in first class
but the problem os they let the row behind me smoke....this makes the
entire flight uncormfortable.......I never complain, except for this
inconvenience.....I am sorry for the smokers that I may offend, but
what can I do as passenger..... a smoker can stop smoking, a
passenger has no choice.....
I just realized that you could duplicate a person's signature with

or...........with chop sticks........do the ring on wand.......

Making PCX requires some way to feed the camera output into the

Re: BAD CRC

CRC stands for "Cyclical Redundancy Check" (or something very much like
that, I'm in a hurry). When you are downloading or uploading a file,
XModem and some of the other protocols perform a test on each "block"
(128 bytes in the case of XModem, 1024 bytes in the case of YModem,
etc.) to figure out if the block got transfered OK. If the CRC doesn't
come out right, then the receiving computer tells the sending computer
to send the block again.

Re: JAPAN-HONG KONG

I don't want to start a thread on smoking vs. non-smoking, but the
problem on airplanes is NOT the smokers, it is the changes that they
made in the air conditioning systems when they became more "fuel
efficient." Smoking is not the problem (assuming smokers and
non-smokers are segregated by rows, etc. rather than sitting right next
to each other), it is actually the visible/noticable sign of the
problem. Banning smoking on planes, rather than fixing the problem
(which has dramatically increased your chances of getting real
contagious diseases while on planes - there are solid studies that show
this) is a lot like killing the canary so that the miners won't know
the air is bad.

Michael Ammar's Classic Renditions Video on "The Floating Bill and John
Cornelius' Coin That Falls Up" should have the info on the muscle pass.
It's on my Christmas wish list so I haven't seen it yet but maybe
someone else on here has seen it. I think Pete knows the book it was
written up in. It's not a very extensive write up from what I
remember. I've been practicing for months now and I can still only get
it to pop sideways six or eight inches. I have noticed the practice
has dramatically improved my palming technique with coins so it has
been well worth the time spent. As a matter of fact, T.C. Tahoe is the
one who recommended to me that I practice making the coin pop out of my
palm just for the purpose of improving the strength of my palm muscles.

Re: HONG KONG

Well isn't this an interesting city....you can be next to the most
modern skyscrapper, and just steps away, you are in a meat or fish
market, with ox tails, heads and ribs hanging in front of you.
The buildings here are incredible, the view from my room, fantastic.
I am overlooking the ferry to Macau....we just returned and I perform
ed for one of the owners of a casino, Stanley Ho.....Mr. Juiceman of
Hong Kong......in otherwords the Chinese Maha-off, if you know what I
mean......interesting to say the least....he especially liked
second dealing effects and three card monte.....I also used the belt
swindle....he went for it hook, line and sinker.
We went over in the hover craft and back in his yacht to the Royal
Hong Kong Yacht Club.....wowie........makes Balboa look sick.....
They say about 90% of the people here practice the ancient art of sha
dow boxing......ta'i chi ch'uan.....and a real important part of
their daily routine.....at four in the morning the men and women, old
and young gather in Victoria Park.......The calm circles they draw i
n the air remind me of a leaf's path as it floats in the wind. But
when do they sleep?......
Central- no name could be more apt....Here is the true heart of Hong
Kong....financial center.....business hub......everything is here.
Each day a building gets demolished and a new one goes up......it
is a living cell..........unbelievable........
Each blcok in the city is a city within itself....each section has
a theater, restaurants, companies and markets......much like 7-11's.
There is this one building, much like the Hyatt Hotels, from within y
ou see floors and floors of tiny Buddhas....This is called the
Temple of 10,000 Buddhas......

GLOBAL TRICK
David...I will use all of my God given mind, what I have left that is
to try a special GLOBAL CARD TRICK........I will use ESP, and( a
little BS) to make this miracle of the east work.......but there
is only one special request...as I am looking into the sun and the
sun dial in the court of Yue Hwa...I realize that I only can
perform this effect at 11:18 am.........at that point the sun is
perfect, and my mind will be clear of Chinese wine.......
Here we go........Shuffle your deck
1. Remove six cards...from these six, select one and deal the remaind
er of the deck into two face down heaps on the table, a card to each
in rotation.........
2. Put your chosen card in either heap, and the remaining cards (5)
on the same heap, or the other, whichever you prefer........
3. At the noted time that I decided to do the effect it was 11:18.
4. Add 11 to 18 and you get 29....your card is the 29th position fro
m the top.`

Re: MENU ITEMS (YUM)

Way back when, Dr. Jaks discussed the problem of tipping; he told me
that, as there is no set protocol for that situation, customers don't
know whether they are supposed to tip or not. He always used a table
card WITH A PRICE STATED ON IT. Note: this price would be an odd
number (say $7.50 back then) and the spectators would almost always
give the next higher bill, a $10. This way there was no confusion,
everyone knew what the situation was, and when he went to a table it
was because he had been requested -- there was no active solicitation
of business. Jaks was, of course, quite successful as a close-up
worker.

Re: MUSCLE PASS

Wayne,
Welcome back! Haven't heard from you in a while, thought we lost
you.

I'm not sure what book the muscle pass is in, but you might want
to check out Mike Ammar's "Classic Renditions Vol 1" video. Along
with Michael's handling of the floating bill, John Cornelius
demonstrates how to accomplish the muscle pass. He calls it "The
coin that falls up". In this case, seeing instead of reading it
is preferred as it seems to be more of a knack, and is probably
hard to describe in writing. For about $35. the video's well
worth it.

Oh yeah, if you get Genii, look back just a month or two. I
remember someone writing a description recently.

I just found it! October 1991 issue on page 811. It's called "A
Big Knack Attack" by Keith Niemeier from Denver, Co. He says he
learned it from a Cornelius lecture. He says the starting
position is similar to a classic palm, but is pressed deeper into
the palm. From what I've seen, he might mean higher up on the
thumb, as the coin seems to "catch" on the thumb knuckle which
causes the necessary spring action.

Hope this helps,
David (the other one)

Does Pat Page have tiny little suckers on his palm to hold a dime?
I never thought it would be necessary to hold my hand perfectly flat
with fingers outstretched while palming a coin but I did see T.C. Tahoe
do a terrific coins across routine where he was standing behind a table
and sort of leaning forward with his fingertips on the table. It was
one of the best uses of the "flat handed" palm I have ever seen. He
would flick the coins around on the table top with his finger tips and
no one would believe he could have one palmed. That's when I REALLY
started working on my own technique.

You might ask their gus that are "connected" if they know the guy
in Macau that owns a couple of casinos and "ahem" Bordellos... He
is a good friend of mine... TEDDY YIP. I think he also owns the
Hover Crafts (but not sure if they are the ones to Macau/Hong Kong
or Singapore.
I was doing some card magic at a dinner party one time, Yip
was there. He grabbed the cards away from me and started to do the
3 Card Monte... and was TAKING HIS FRIENDS MONEY... for real. I
didn't say a word, just sat there amazed ... then a waiter came
over and said, "Sorry NO CARDS ALLOWED"... so the Yip takes off his
belt and keeps taking their money with the Loop!!!! Wild guy. He is
gettin on in years now and is living in Phoenix for the dry climate
these days.
One guy you want on your side for sure in any dealing! He used
to run a couple of cars (very big time money) at the Indy 500 and
was a financial backer of a buddy of mine in a racing team.
Yip loves fast cars and like women. He once rented the entire
Queen Mary in Long Beach and threw a party for 3,000 of his closest
friends. I was working that night and missed it.
I saw him six months later at a race and he came up to me and
said, "Why weren't you at my party?"
On his 70th birthday he threw a party for every woman in the
world he had ever spent time with! He flew them all to Macau! Boy
the ladies must have had some wild stories to tell.
He always flew with a jar of white lightnin' (Chinese rice wine)
in his case. We were at Indianapolis one time and he ran out of
T-Shirts to give to friends, and his right-hand-man, Ronald, was
standing there... Yip looked at him and said, "Go to my house right
now and get two more cases of T-Shirts!"
He had to fly from Indianapolis to Hong Kong, grab the two
cases and jump right back on a plane and bring them to Indy. Teddy
didn't trust shipping companies or people out of his sight!
One reason the kid (he was about 20 at the time) would do any
thing Teddy wanted without question was Teddy was paying all his
expenses and sending him to USC to study engineering. Today he is
an engineer on a very successful racing team... Toyota!!!!

Dove Lease! I love it... although I would prefer (at some conventions
to use the Japanese method and OUTLAW THEM!)
.
There is a great story about Shimada and bringing his doves into
the USA... They MUST go into quarantine for a long period of time.
And as you know, doves are trained and learn to do the correct
things in the act... and if you have them for some time they become
good friends.
.
So, Shimada showed up at the Quarantine and said, "I have to see
my doves and give them their SPECIAL food." They said OK, and in
he went. HE SWITCHED THE TRAINED DOVES FOR SOME STUPID ONES, taking
his pets home with him... and nobody there caught on!

Cheers to Geno, jeers to David L. I know this
shouldn't become a thread (we should stick to magic),
but have to comment that you are dead wrong on the
smoking thing, whether it is on airplanes or in any
public place. Smokers -- and I realize you are one --
have NO IDEA what they, and their children, clothing,
hair, pets, etc. smell like. Whether or not they are
smoking at the moment. I know I can't convince you.
The only way a smoker will ever know is to stop smoking
for a year or so to relearn what fresh oxygen and
nitrogen smell like. We were discussing this at home
yesterday (because my daughter had just come home from
a babysitting job and reeked; the mother was a smoker).
My father-in-law, who eventually stopped because of a
serious lung scare, has become a real crusader against
the habit -- not for health reasons, but because of
how offensive it is. "Why did you ever let me?" he
says. But when he was smoking, of course, there was no
talking to him about it. Sure, better air conditioning
helps, but not enough; the only way to solve the
problem is to eliminate the cause, not to try to mask
it. Sorry to drone on about this; I don't want it to
come between us. Both my parents still smoke, and
several of my friends do, and I love them all. But I
sure hate their habit.

Re: HART IS THE THING

Amazed to read that there were some so-so reviews of
"The Addams Family." So far, I've seen only two
reviews, NEWSWEEK's ("They're Spookier and Ookier") and
PRODIGY's (4 stars, a rarely given highest rating), and
both were positive. I caught the movie myself opening
night and adored it. Great actors, great lines, a
terrific haunted house, and true to the spirit of the
original Chas Addams cartoons -- what more could one
want? The magical special effects involving Chris
Hart's right hand were excellent, but, for me, the
delightfully evil child Wednesday stole the show. I
should confess that I am a longtime Addams fan, and one
of the real plusses of the movie is that it drew on
numerous original cartoons rather than drawing on the
old TV series. It's like watching a bunch of the
cartoons come to life, especially those from a
collection called MONSTER RALLY. Indeed, the movie
opens with the famous cartoon of the Family pouring
boiling oil on a group of Christmas carolers. Some
years ago I was fortunate to purchase a signed (by
Addams) print of this cartoon, and it remains one of my
proudest possessions. I now look forward to owning a
copy of this movie. Definitely a must see if you are
into the spookier side of magic.

I will ask Mr. Ho about him, but maybe he "broad tossed" in and
around Stanley's joint....When I dealt baccarat years ago, these
guys would come to the table with 50,000 minum US credit, everyone wo
uld would sit until the leader, or senior man decides to make a bet.
He puts his wager down, and whop, everyone bets. Anywhere from $4,000
to $8,000 per hand, per player.
One time I was called in on a scam at the Dunes...some chinese
ripped off the baccarat game.....method used was flashing the cards
after they were dealt..........then the players bet....the place was
destroyed. We had it on video........long story as to the layers
of involvement......big Idonesian plyer DADI DARMA, knew all of them.
This guy bet $50,000 a hand all day long......in bundles of new $100
bills that were stapled together, so he couldn't rmove any bills.
........Many crossroaders are trained in Hong Kong in special scams.
One very good gaff is bending the Aces in a blackjack game. Then when
the dealer gives you the cards to cut, you cut above the bend. This
will bring an ace to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth seat. T
he player hopes he can getthat extra 1/2 bet with a blackjack....
Talk to you later.....still looking for popcorn.

I took the bike into the Los Angeles area yesterday, and gave the
nice people lots of money. So now we officially have bought our
tickets! Yay! We have 25 people who are attending.
I want to thank everyone who is going for the great cooperation.
I couldn't have done this without it.
Now all we have to do is figure out how we are going to recognize
each other at the Wiltern.
Does anybody need directions? Any problems. I'm told that there
is an open parking lot next to the theatre for vans and such.
(When I went into Los Angeles to see "La Miserables" I took my
van, and found nothing but enclosed parking. It was a good thing
we were there an hour early!)
If there are any questions, I will do my darndest to answer them.

Actually, it was the Ace of Spades. But, you remind me of a
story. (Oh god! Not another one.) When I was a wee lad of about

asked another to pick a card. The card chosen, the first
character said, "Queen of Hearts" The other one said "Nope."
Well, to a 4 year-old kid, this was the height of comedy. So I
went to my brother with a deck of cards and said "Pick a card."
He did, and I said "Queen of Hearts." He looked at me amazed,
and said "How did you do that?!?" I just smiled and walked away.

I am curious as to why you think a table card stating a fee would be
offensive. You are there as a pro to do a job; they can choose to have
you perform for them or not. What some people might consider offensive
is a performer who simply comes up to them unasked and starts
performing, hoping for a tip. I don't know how you handle your tip
situation -- but there ARE other point of view. In Jaks case he was
not getting paid by the restaurant OR working for tips; he was working
for a fee, as most people in most professions do.
As to Maven -- you're on your own hook there; I have enough trouble
getting him to take my advice about card tricks...

Invite a spectator to the stage. Go to the rear of the audience

You are right I am a critical & rational observer. I have been
investigating the 'New Age' for the past year and have been attending
psychic fairs all over the place. Most of the stuff is very subjectiv
e and easily dismissed. I must admit that I went to this workshop
expecting to see some hand waving and missed attempts or even out
right trickery.
.
My working hypothesis right now is that somehow this guy has figured
out a way to make ordinary silverware take on the characteristics of
the bio-wire I demonstrated. Bio-wire is temperature sensitive and
changes its basic structure depending on its temperature. If there
was some way to treat metal so that when you held it in your hands
, your body would heat the metal and allow the metal to bend. As it
cools down it would get hard again. The only problem with this theory
is that the temperature range is too narrow. It's quite a puzzle !
.
As for being on the front page of every newspaper, I don't think so.
The press and public seem to take metal-bending as a given and hence
not all that news worthy.

Bio-metal is made by a company in Irvine by the name of Dynalloy.
They have sample kits for sale. When an electric current is applied

you can increase the effect significantly. I'm working on several
magic effects using the principle.

Re: ROBOT AT TAPER

In the script file there is a reference to the number in the dialing
directory. The dialing directory is what you see when you do a Alt-
D. The msg should have read 'Then compile ...'. You need to have
have 2 directory entries to dial-in to magic. One will have MAGICLOG
as its associated script file, and the other will have MAGICREP. If
you use Alt-D to select what entry you want to dial, you don't
have to set the directory number in the script. I set them up so that
MAGICLOG is directory entry # 1 and MAGICREP is directory entry # 2.
.
To compile all you have to do is type ASPCOMP MAGICLOG, which will
create MAGICLOG.ASX, then ASPCOMP MAGICREP which creates MAGICREP.ASX
when you run from PCLUS you can either use Alt-D and then execute
the appropriate directory entry or use ALT-F5 to run a specific scrip
t file which will automatically dial the appropriate directory entry
if you have set the directory # to match what your directory is.

I'll be more than happy to answer any questions about video to
computer conversions. From what I've seen though, a scan of a
photo beats direct video every time. There just aren't enough
video lines available for a good capture. It looks okay if you
want to generate a video slide show on a video monitor, but when
you convert to GIF or PCX there just isn't enough to work with.
Check out some of my old uploads for examples. "WIZRD" was a
video shoot of a poster, and "T_WINDOW" was captured off
Copperfield's last special and zoomed to 320 X 200. Pretty blurry
stuff. Compare those to "VEGAS.GIF" and you'll see what I mean.

Have you got any suggestions on the best settings for scanning photos
on an HP ScanJet? I'm using their original ScanGal program and I'm
finding that photos come out very grainy. The main problem seems to be
the 640 x 480 limitation of the EGA/VGA screen.

I'm sorry to admit -- I winced a lot during the act. I thought he used
a real "minimal" effect -- just calling off cards like that, and I
don't know how impressed the audience was. I really mean that -- I
don't know if that would have struck laymen as impressive mind reading.
Intuitively, I think not. I thought the ploy he used to get the host
to choose the correct pocket was pretty transparent, and can't believe
that anyone was fooled by that. The stuff about being barred in LV and
finding "two or three thousand" checks was fun, but I think yes, they
were ploys -- showmanship.

I would suggest that you simply visit any of the local Hobby shops
that carry model trains or military models and see if they are
interesting in buying lichen moss from you. I have seen it simply
bagged up in plastic bags as is and also airbushed autumn leaf colors
of orange, yellow, red and brown. It is sold that way and also glued
onto plastic tree limbs or wire tree limbs for a lot more money (but
then somebody has to spend a lot of time gluing it onto the trees).
There are also model shows in most larger cities where you might rent
a table and sell the stuff yourself. In case you ain't found your
yellow pages yet, try Aardvark's Model Train Shop on 3607 Gallatin
Rd in N'town or call 'em at 615-228-4639.
