Re: MAX MAVEN

It sounds like a fascinating town to visit and possibly to host a
small invitation only close up convention. We need at least a 1500
seat theatre and a 500 plus room hotel for starters. Of course, with
that mural, we wouldn't have to worry about an audience. Probably
about as responsive as most magician audiences anyhow.
Say...your reports of your travels in the far East are great! Thanks
for sharing them with us.

Re: MUSCLE PASS

Have you been working on the muscle pass? If so, how's it coming?
Johnny Ace Palmer can shoot one up about 18 inches or so. He can make
two go up about a foot and he can make it look like he can pop FOUR
half dollars up about a foot also! He shows four coins in the left
hand and retains two of them while apparently dumping all four into the
right hand. He pops up the two which he catches in the left hand which
still has two palmed and opens up his hand to show all four! It gets
lots of OOHS! and AHHS! from magicians!

Amaragosa does not qualify! Last time I was there, there was one

nearby car rental agency. The Opera House seats about 100, but I think
the town only sleeps 24.

Uh, to be honest, Marvin, I didn't want to bring up the matter of the
letter I got from you. I wasn't the one who asked for it! And since
that kinda indicated that your memory was failing (and we know that is
the second thing to go, so there are implications for the first
thing...) I figured I would just trust to the possibility that you had
also sent the thing on to the guy who had actually asked for it.

some gags that I have been using from Gagsterisms, by Ali. He
really put out some great material....One gag that got so many laughs
wa the hank in my pocket gimmick.....I came out with the serpent sil
silk, and it untied itself a couple of times....then I produced
a dove, this is not original but was done by someone wh just simply
skips my mind at the moment.....I then reach into my breast pocket
for my hank, tht is protruding, I will pretend to use it for the nex
t part of the effect..........however after pulling it out, it turns
out to be a pair of womens, sexy lacy underwear, sure to get a laugh.

Re: JAPAN

I was in this small street where they have a market place, I guess
this city is called Ma Huin, anyway that is how it sounds. Technic-
ally we are inside Red China....this is wild.......I found this
open air type swap meet.....everything for sale, even used clothes an
handbags, probally lifted from someone.....anyway I picked up some
foulards, (remember that magic term, much like secure your feke',
beautiful silk, however when I went to pay for it, the lady could
not change my $500 note.....she held it in the air, looked at both
sides, and called some man over to check it out. At first I
thought she did not have the currency.....hen this poor unassuming
lady reached into her dress, and pulled out a wad that would choke
a fat chinese person. She made change so fast, I couldn't believe
my eyes...Faster than a paper currency baccarat dealer, like they
used to have in Las Vegas........I found out that she was
afraid the money was counterfeit.......
Still can't find any chinese magicians, I have the right tel numbers
but Mr. Tam seems very hard to locate. First number I had, the lady
that answered, said, "He no live here no more." That must mean
"no mas", then she gave me another number, and the gentleman, notice
how I prefaced that, said, "try other number". Still can't locate
him. We are like two magic tables passing in the night.
I also have inquired about the Birosan POPCORN gaff, and I was
told you don't see it anymore because the police don't allow it.
I really at this point have a "yen" for Spanish rice. Maybe
I will find a Mexican Chinese person who could make some for me.
I feel like Marco Polo, who by the way is the reason you find
rip off versions of Polo shirts in Taiwan........
Just think I could be in Wichita, Kansas right now....or Skokie, Ill.
or some other very glamorous American garden delight.......
I think I will do a version of the rice bowls tonight at a party,
and use rice wine instead of water..........
Chat at you all later..........
PS. It is definitely the water..............

Re: JAPAN

Also sorry to hear of the multiple and unimaginative
Professor's Nightmare presentations. It seems to me
that the easiest way to avoid duplication is for the
magicians to simply talk to each other. On the rare
occasions that I work the Close-Up Gallery, I always
make it a point to catch the other guy's act, partly to
avoid duplication, and partly because it is usually a
treat. It did come up one night that I needed to drop
an effect. I do a slightly (very slightly) different
version of Goshman's handling of the Devano deck. One
night while I was working, Albert came in to work the
overflow crowds in the Wine Cellar. I talked to Albert
about it before we went on, and he was very nice and
said I should do it anyway, that it wouldn't bother him
at all. But I didn't -- it just wouldn't have been
right. (Critics could easily say that I didn't want to
suffer by comparison. That would also be true, I
suppose, but it wasn't my motivation.) It goes back to
the "performing rights" clause in the recent Bruce
Cervon book. It just doesn't seem right to perform the
same basic effect on the same bill with the originator,
even if you did pay him for it. It shouldn't matter
whether it is legal or not, it is just simple courtesy.
     *
As to the Professor's Nightmare, I'm not certain who
should have dropped it, probably all of them. But
banning an effect isn't really the answer either,
because someone is going to come along and stun the
other magi with a fresh presentation or method. (On
this effect, for example, I haven't seen the Wenk
method. Is it truly an improvement?) A few years
back, everyone was knocking the linking rings, and
arguing that they should be banned. Then Richard Ross
came along with his beautiful 4-ring routine, and the
effect looked like magic again. Today the zombie is
magic's outcast. But I'm sure someone will someday
breathe life back into it. For example, Lin Searles
once told me of a great move where the magician was
holding the cloth, and he leaned impossibly forward as
the ball floated away from him (a la Christopher Bell's
"Incline" illusion currently advertised in GENII).
I've never seen this, but always thought this would
look great if I ever wanted to do zombie. I don't
recall who the originator was.
     *
At any rate, it's hard to believe the guys didn't talk
it over. Or that one of the staff didn't catch onto
the duplication.

Re: VISITING MAGE

Met an Italian Magician today... he seems to be "very sharp" and
he is working a round the world cruise... looking for Illusions
to buy as well. He was in San Francisco today (Tues) and may be
here again tomorrow. Then the boat heads south to L.A. area...a
He has a gorgeous assistant with him and they both are going to
call to try to visit the Castle... They speak some English. More
than I do Italian.
.
They are acquainted with Silvan... Italy's No. ONE TV Magician...
and hopefully if any of you run into them, take some time and
chat... nice people.
.
His name (on his card) is; ERIX.
Medium built, curly black hair. Was wearing black leather clothes
and I told him the olde fashioned Castle would ask that they show
up dressed in coat and tie and a dress for the lady...
.
I have good vibes here... sometimes you can just tell... they know
all the right people in Europe and had same opinions on some of
the acts at FISM that I did...
.
Saw another incredibly original russian act today on the Ammar
Soviet Visit tape... and Galina with her sensuous Linking Ring act.
,
Her picture MUST GO IN THE BOOK.
.
Hey anyone out there remember the Vietnamese magician that did
the linking rings while UNDER A BEDSHEET? He was onstage, with the
sheet over him, he handled the rings, which were outside the sheet,
from within..... and anybody (other than Max) know Bob Swadling's
daughter's first name?
.
It is ok if you answer Max... Sorry to keep nailing you, but you
have the memory that I do not!

Sorry, no good suggestions. If you have a Scanjet, it's limited
by the number of shades available. It wasn't until Scanjet+ that
they could handle 256 grey scale shades. This, I believe, is the
main limitation.

I use Scanjet as a scanner for a computer fax and only need 2
colors, no half tones or dithering. I'm disappointed in Scangal
as I've spent as much as an hour of retries before I get a good
combination of brightness and contrast to get a usable image.

Recently, I've been using a set of programs called SunScan and
Image Tools, which handle several scanners (including Scanjet)
and do a fairly good job of image touch ups. I used them for
"VEGAS.GIF".

When I can find them, I like the "Aristocrat" cards. They have a
very subtle one way pattern in the beaded border pattern. They're
shaded only on one side of the beads to give them a 3D effect.

From what I've seen, most of the Bicycle errors have been
corrected. Most recently, they fixed the Ace of Spades. It used
to be easy to spot by an odd sized curl unique only to that card.

Were you the one asking about the arthritic ring? I have a
jeweler's supply catalog that carries two types, only one can be
used for our needs. They sell half a ring shank designed for a
jewelry maker to cut and add in to a customer's band. Doesn't
look very good, but makes me wonder that it may have been the
inspiration for what we have today.

There is a video of one of Del's full-length close-up performances at
a Tannen's Jubilee, and another of a show at the SAM convention in
Louisville. Both are from the 1980s. Neither is terrific quality in
terms of camera work and sound recording, but both are splendid
documents. Very few copies exist of either tape. They were done with
Del's permission, and and those that own authorized dubs have agreed
not to make further copies.

Del Ray is certainly one of my all time favorites - it would be very
enlightening to hear him talk about his performing philosophies. His
style of performing, his selection of material, his method of
entertaining in a close up arena for 2 hours running, etc... are all
backed by decades of experience. These things would interest me more
than what particular tricks he performed. Although I would be
fascinated in his criteria for performance material. What does he look
for in an effect, and why? How does he balance tricks that involve the
audience with effects they just watch? Are there "mini-sets" of
openings and closeing in the body of that 2 hour close up session? Are
they all openers? All closers? Does he plan one opening, an hour and
40 minutes of "body" material, followed by his one big closer? Yeah,
there are a lot of questions I'd like to ask Del Ray!

Re: FROGS IN MAGIC

Again, Mike, I do not think that Del Ray ever lectured. For the
record I will explain some of the things he did as well as I can
remember.
.
Special electronic table. When doing dice stacking he used the
bare table. When the card items called for it he would throw a
close-up mat on the table. All of the props and the mat were in a
case on a chair to his right.
.
Some effects:
.
Hamman Final Aces.
Dice stacking.
Bird in a cage which would tweet the number on dice. Even tweet
before the dice were thrown, I think.
.
Dice were rolled down a clear box which shook them up and he had
complete control, apparently, of the dice.
.
Many card effects. Most selections wound up in his inside left
coat pocket after the effect. This was a running gag. "Beautiful
card! Beautiful card!"
.
Little figures of a frog etc. which were placed on top of a glass
or in a spectator's palm which would pop over to stand on their
front legs. This was done early in the routine.
.
The closing was usually Willie the mouse who would roam over the
table to find a card. He had his own little house and Del talked
to him as if he were real. Del and the mouse were so great
together that no one really cared if he found the card or not.
.
Forgot one of the great ones. Deck spread and the selected card
on top turns face-up and then turns face-down.
.
This just a start. Some of those with better memories can add or
expand. Those with tapes can be more exact.
.
The best close-up act _ever_. That includes Goshman who is surely
#2.
.
This was long. Thanks for reading.

There are quite a few allusions to the original cartoons, as I

the problem CITED (I should say) had todo with the story being
episodic. I can't wait to see it, nonetheless. And it looks like a

Re: FISM SHOW

Nathan has had a paint program and a "coloring book" program for over
a year. It seems that while the rest of the World is going from text
to graphics, he is going from graphics to text. It has been very
interesting to watch him. It turns out that the mechanical process of
printing or writing is impossible for someone his age due to the
difficulty of small motor control (it doesn't fully develop until
later), but that turns out to be no barrier to learning to key! So he
now knows about 23 out of 26 letters, all of the numbers, and several
of the computer keys (Enter, Up arrow, etc.) and can use them without
any gestures or "prompts" other than naming the letter (he's already
asked me, "How do you spell David Copperfield?").

The other thing that I found funny is that even at an age much greater
than his (say, when you were 13) if I had asked you to associate the
word "keyboard" you would have been likely to come up with "typewriter"
(or "piano," but we will ignore that for the moment). He doesn't know
what a typewriter is!

I generally try to avoid "techy talk" here on MAGIC! But, if you want

until last month, I "didn't do Windows." I've changed. Windows is one
of the most exciting and interesting things I've seen in the last
couple of years. The capabilities for graphics are endless! (or damn
close). And Ventura for Windows should be out any day now (although
after seening what WordStar can do in a Windows environment, I'm not
sure what Ventura is for any more!).

Disappointed because I, who have almost no experience, could do

Let me see if I can remember the type of playing cards...
Each one had three wings on the back...
And there was a wheel in the middle...
Got the part about them being from U.S. Playing Cards...
Ubiquity is not one of their properties, but they are available...
Easy!

Did I do that right? Considering that Annemann used them?

Pete:

"They can't afford to pay Angelica and Raul what they usually get, so
they send Hart out to do the TV and stuff."

Do you mean they can't afford to pay Angelica Huston and Raul Julia
what they usually get to do promotion, or that they couldn't afford to
pay them their normal salaries on the film, and are thus reluctant to
ask them to do PR?

It's my understanding that an actor is never paid for PR work they do
on behalf of the film. Nor can the studio, when push comes to shove,
force the actor to do the PR (it's just not realistic). They do,
however, have to pay for accomodations and the like...

I know, who cares,

My scanner software wouldn't work for you - it is too brand specific

anyway! In this case, not only is it wrong to steal, it is worthless
to steal!

I think that the newest, spiffiest, Publisher's Paintbrush (I think it
is called Plus, or Pro, or something like that) _may_ support your
scanner. BUT it is also possible to convert PCX to TIFF and so on with
a number of graphics conversion programs. One is HiJaak. There is a
new version of it out, but I ain't got yet.

Viri can be a _very_ real problem! They do _not_ always come from
"public domain" programs - they can get to you from commercial software
too. Check out Central Point's PC-Tools 7.1 or their special
Anti-Virus program. Both look good.

Amaragosa sounds delightful! Your saying the town only sleeps 24

"conventions" I have had the pleasure of attending. The late Rick
Johnsson used to teach hotel management in Ashville, NC. The school
motel had 12 rooms and he used the facility for his invitation only
Super Session South conventions. At two per room, the total size of
the attendees was limited to 24. Everyone participated, we used the
school kitchen to prepare wonderful food, and it was a wonderful
weekend. A publication with a trick from everyone in attendance was
also produced after each get together.

When you say "out this way" I am assuming you DON'T mean where you
are at the moment but rather Nevada. We have looked very hard at
Reno for an IBM convention, but the Pioneer Theatre is downtown and
the likely hotel is the MGM out by the airport and we would have to
shuttle folks back and forth. In spite of that, we have been close
to a deal a couple of times but things didn't quite work out. Tahoe
is another locale I would like to check out. We stay away from Vegas
as that is Joe's turf and the SAM is already going there every two or
three years and we don't want to appear to be competing with them.
Western sites are not easy to find.

Arnaud Van.Rietschoten posted the following msg:

Jippieeee!!! I have an answer on one of your questions (if in the
meantime it has already not been answered by someone else). That
Vietnamese magician was called TRAN. Never met Bob Swadling's
daughter, but let me have a guess....how about Bobette???
 OK, what do I win?????
Pete, today we had clubmeeting and spoke with Dick Koornwinder,
he had some goodnews that apparently there are premature plans to
make a Kaps special for Dutch TV. Dick spoke with an independent
TV production company, and they were having plans into that
direction. Dick gave them a list with all he remembered that was
shown on dutch TV with Kaps, and they will try to get that on
Umatic from the dutch TV video libary.
The plans are all still very fresh but even when that program
will never be made, the preparation only to get the Umatic tapes
can be of great help for us.

Will keep you informed.

Re: HAND OF CLEOPATRA

The hand of Cleopatra, the spinning hand which ends up turned to the
duirection you wanted, I have never liked all that much. The way the
hand stops spinning is totally unnatural. In the end it sways back and
forth before coming to a rest. A real unfaked spinner would not do
that, it would just slowly come to a rest without going back and forth.
Does anybody know if there is a system for a spinner which comes to
rest normally? I know there are a few which are used for carnivalgames,
but these involve usually some preparation of the table as well. It
should be a self contained spinner, just like the hand of cleopatra,
with no attachments or something like that. If you know of such a
system, can you let me know?

will have to see what the plans are for tonight. I do not know.
To use the principle for the koornwinder car would make the spinner
stop abruptly and that I feel would be no good either. I want to have
the spinner gradually slow down and come to a stop. Magnets have the
same disadvantage as the method of the cleopatra hand, once the spinner
is going too slow it will go through the magnetic field and go throught
it and then back. Once it has passed the point it has to stop it
shoould have enough energy to make a full round again and then stop at
the predertermined point. I have an idea how it might be worked, but I
do not want to reinvent the wheel, so if something exists already...

Re: MUSCLE PASS

I work on it a little bit everyday. I always have a couple of half
dollars in my pocket and whenever I find myself standing in line or
otherwise unoccupied for a minute I will take out a half and try
popping it out of the palm a few times. So far I have just been seeing
how far I can get it to go sideways which isn't very far yet but it's
a whole lot better than the meager amount I can make it go straight up.
Gravity has a tendancy to ruin my efforts! I am seeing progress albeit
slow. I don't pick up on these things as quickly as some people. It
took me MANY months to do a good coin roll. My wife would often become
exasperated with me when we would be out shopping and there would be
the clinking of another coin hitting the floor and rolling down the
aisle. This would happen several times a minute during some shopping
trips! I did eventually become very good at knowing when a coin fell
off of my knuckles and without looking I could snatch it out of the air
before it hit the ground. Anyway, whether you want to do a muscle pass
or anything else well you know there is just one sure way to learn it..

Re: TORN AND RESTORED PAPER

There are some tricks that we could not care about one way or the
other. For me a trick without a point to it such as the Torn and
Restored (news)Paper is one such effect. I mean, if you wanted a whole
piece of paper, why tear it up in the first place. As with everything
else in magic, that is probably not an original observation but it best
sums up what I'm thinking about at the moment. Anyway, I came up with
a logical reason for doing a torn and restored paper effect and I then
set about looking for a way to do it. There are A LOT of ways to do it
but I couldn't come up with anything that would work right for me.
Like, what do you do with all of those pieces? I ended up reinventing
the wheel and came up with my own paper tear idea. I started to write
it up for posting on the board but part way into my labors I realized
that maybe the world or at least Magic! members don't need or want
another paper tear! If anyone is interested I will go ahead and write
it up though. The last time I had my show critiqued it received the
highest marks of any trick in the hour long show. It could very well
be that it was a combination of the story and the effect itself which
unfortunately is aimed at a very narrow audience. Don't know- I DO
know that I'm rambling so I'll ramble on outta here.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!

Re: TORN AND RESTORED PAPER

I see your point about the, uh, limited practicality of the Torn and
Restored Newspaper. But another way of looking at it is that the
restoration of a torn or broken object without resort to conventional
means of repair is a powerful piece of magic. So restoring a torn
piece of paper is magic, and tearing it is simply a device to show that
it was indeed torn before you restored it.
There are a lot of "magic tricks" that bother me for the reason you
mention - they seem totally contrived. There is, for example, some odd
thing with lightbulbs and switches that I've seen recently that bothers
me in this regard. But it is also a fine line - carrying around a set
of large diameter rings seems to be OK with the general public, but
there are other things that shriek "prop." Where's the line? I donno.
As to your particular method - of course we're interested! And if it
deals with what I think it might (junk mail?) it sounds even more
reasonable! So I, for one, would welcome it!

And a VERY Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Re: HIMBER RING

Ee;26873
Cy, talked to Persi tonight and he refreshed my memory of 20 or
so years ago. He DID come up with the idea to have a ring made
that opened and shut. He was riding on a bus when the idea hit him.
The premise of linking finger rings goes to an earlier Bamberg,
who had several rings gathered on a tray (switched em all) and
linked them in a chain and brought them into the Chinese Linking
rings. Freddy Fah had some kind of rings to linking rings effect
as well. But Persi was thinking on the lines due to a challenge
from Fawcett Ross (Persi is going to see if he can find the letter
from FR). It was NOT from adapting an arthritic ring. There was
none like it. He talked it out with Willy Schneider, who made up
a few variations... Himber picked the ones to make, the Standard
(Signet with stone), the basic - same as signet, but no stone, just
space for engraved initials and the Wedding Band.
.
Straight from the man!

While the idea of linking paper rings was already around, Paul Harris
seems to have been the first to use playing cards with their centers
torn out. Crabtree comes later in the chronology.

Indeed, Tooru Suzuki's version in "New Magic of Japan" is excellent, as
are all his creations, very few of which have been published in either
Japanese or English. He recently joined the staff of Tenyo, so about a
year from now you can look forward to seeing further output from him.

Re: TORN AND RESTORED PAPER

There are quite a few versions of the Torn & Restored Paper which have
motivation built in (e.g., John Thompson, Jade). For that matter, the
most commonly used patter presentation for the newspaper (usually with
the Gene Anderson method) is Sid Lorraine's patter which was made
popular (_too_ damned popular) by Doug Henning; in that routine, the
whole thing is presented as a demonstration of illusionary tearing,
which provides a conceptual context for the trick beyond the "look what
I can do" approach.

However, while these various justifications are valid, I'm not at all
convinced that they are necessary. Consider that Arnold Furst's "Fresh
Fish" is explicitly motivated, but (to me) it ranks somewhat down on
the scale, whereas my personal favorite T&R Paper is Jack Goldfinger's,
which involves no motivation whatsoever.

Re: FROGS IN MAGIC

If you speak with him, he will probably re-tell you what I heard
yesterday. In case you don't reach him, and in case others might be
interested, what I learned is that the filming took place about 2 years
ago in Philadephia. The guys at Philadelphia Magic know Del well, and
asked him to appear at their day of magic. Several others filled out
the rest of the day, such as Gary Kurtz.
.
Ken couldn't actually remember what all he filmed, for reasons I'll
mention in a minute, but he originally thought that Del had done a
lecture, performed close up, and done his stage act. When I pointed
out that it would have been very unusual for Del to have lectured, he
pointed out that he might NOT have lectured. That maybe his memory was
of the several other lectures that took place that day. He DID,
however, feel certain of Del's lonclose up show, and of his Stage act.
.
Ken didn't actually see the results of his filming, as he turned over
the raw film to the guys who ran the convention. Last year he called
to see what happened to the footage, and he was told that the ENTIRE
batch of film had been recorded with NO SOUND.
.
At this point, Ken feels the events that were filmed will never see the
light of day. From the timing, it doesn't sound as if the footage Ken
was responsible for is the recordings that others on the board have
mentioned.
.
The thought of it all does make you wish we had more insight inton the
way he thinks, doesn't it?

No commission on this trip, Pete! But now that I know how you operate,

I'm in a foul mood today (in case you can't tell). I'm the guy who
killed Thanksgiving around here. I woke up this morning with a sinus
attack drilling into my skull. Have spent whole day in bed trying to
get rid of it. Am a bit better now and I think we are finally going to
sit down for "lunch." Thank goodness we didn't have guests.

Re: PHONE CALL

Ee;26959
Just got off about a one hour (OUCH$$$$$$$$$$$$) phone call with
the great Topper Martyn, in Sweden... Lots to say, and one item,
he said there is a young guy that is a clone of David Copperfield,
same look, etc. much of the same magic (no levi) and is doing
great business in Sweden.
.
Topper said the news of the Levitation had not reached him yet...
.
He did supply me with some historic references for my book, and
agreed to write the Foreward. Now need someone to write the
Backward... I'm doing the middle...
.
He has a print of an early, performance, but not as early as the
one from Yamamoto... but is a famous Kabuki performer...
.
Topper is doing series of shows with a classical pianist. For
the young kids they do the show in Swedish, the older ones they
do it in English. His role is to get them interested in and to
listen to Classical stuff... He say with the fast cutting and
rapid fire stuff on TV (he hasn't seen MTV) that the kids coming
up now HAVE NO ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE... and is worried about that.
.
They want INSTANT gratification... period... don't have the ability
to take their time and do anything tedius... can't even read books
anymore! Boy did he spot a trend or what????
.
Well stay out of the Malls tomorrow... BURP... need to get my
thighmaster, gutbuster and jogging shoes out... Altho I understand
if you use more than five excercise machines they cancel each other
out and you get fatter immediately.
.
On a Photoforum, a guy in hospital was resported have been put
on a diaretic and LOST 160 LBS in one week... Boy, he must've been
bloaded.. this was not a funny bit, a true one that I can't figure.
How can that be??? argh...

Speaking of Gary Kurtz, I heard that he had a serious accident with
one of his effects. Seems he has a wheel with knives pointing up and
the audience assistant is to turn ONE of the blades down. He than spi
ns the wheel and slams his hand down on the only knife folded down.
Something went wrong and he slammed his hand down and drove a knife
blade completely through his hand. It's not serious and he will be
OK.

Re: MAGIC LINES

We have had several discussions on here from time to time about using
our own material and how it is unethical to use anyone elses material
without either their permission or paying for it. Yesterday I received
five booklets from Daytona Magic all penned by Harry Allen called
"Sleight of One Liners, Sleight of Tongue" etc. I figured he had
written them all and that since I paid for the books that I could use
any of the material contained therein.
However- on the inside of each of the books he says he makes no claim
that all of the humor is his own. He says he has taken some of the
best known lins in comedy and adapted them to magic. I recognized MANY
of the lines currently being used at the Castle. I'm still not sure if
I have the "right" to use the material or not. OK, so I paid for the
material but did I pay the OWNER of the material to use it? Hmmm.

Re: BONES

A few corrections to your story: Joel was booked for Saturday Night
Live. He performed the piece with the fake bomb. The next morning he
went out for a walk; when he came back, the entire hotel had been
evacuated and the bomb squad was moving in to disarm the device that
the maid had discovered sitting on the dresser. When Joel explained
that it was a fake prop of his, he was almost arrested; what saved him
was the fact that the show had aired the night before, thus proving
that the prop was for that purpose. The story made the NY Times.

It's tough to catch Del's shows, because they are mostly private

fact that he values the workshop in his car; thus, almost all of his
work is in the east, in driving range of Pennsylvania.

Re: FROGS IN MAGIC

The effect was a "Russian Roulette" routine involving five knives, all
point-down in a stand. While Gary's back was turned, the spectator
turned one knife point-up, then covered all five with paper sleeves.
Gary would then turn around, and quickly slam his hand down on the four
covered knives which were point-down.

The effect went wrong because on that occasion the spectator didn't
follow his instructions, and turned _two_ knives point-up.

Oh, yes -- the spectator was an amateur magician.

On the same note on who owns the right to original material, an
article in Nashville paper today on the Judds suing some guy who

suit is settled. Seems that Wynonna is the owner of her likeness
