There is no doubt in my mind as to how important the performance
is. I would love to see you perform sometime. I'm sure that I
would enjoy it immensly, and that there is TONS of stuff I can
learn from you. I only suggest that you have more technical
skill than you are giving yourself credit for.

David,
I went and saw Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem a bit ago. They did a
song called "Red is the Rose" which is the same tune as "Loch
Lomann." In the introduction to the song, they accused the
Skotch of stealing the tune for "Loch Lomann." They said,
though, "...that's okay, we gave them the bagpipes and they
still haven't gotten the joke."
Enjoy!

Thanx Pete. I live in Las Vegas. We met briefly at the Desert Magic
Seminar. I've been doing magic for close to 20 yrs. I do mostly
close-up. No, I'm not any relation to Ed Zak. However, I did work as a
commercial and fashion photographer in Pittsburgh, PA. I have been
living in Vegas for the last 13 yrs. I'm trying to get a magic bar
going here in Vegas. Do you know of any magic bartenders that might be
willing to relocate to Vegas? If my financing doesn't fall through I
have a shot of being up and running by March. Any help would be
appreciated.

Re: COPPERFIELD
Nathan has a nice bio of David, but since it is autographed, we framed
it and put it on his wall - it would be a bit difficult for me to get
the info back out at the moment! Guess I should have scanned it first!
David is 35 years old, he was born in Metuchen, New Jersey on September
16th, 1956 (David Kotkin). There are apparently two versions of the
story of how he got interested in magic - Whaley says that it was after
he saw a demo in a department store; T A says that he wanted to be a
ventriloquist and went into a magic store to buy a ventriloquist's
figure. In any event, it was probably when he was about 12. He
started taking magic lessons and proved extremely adept at it. In
addition to other film and television roles, he has done 13 television
specials (his first was in 1977 when he was 21). In 1980 the Academy
of Magical Arts named him Magician of the Year, and he has also been
named Stage Magician of the Year by that body. He has done a number of
spectacular feats, including flying across Grand Canyon, vanishing a
Lear Jet, the dining car of a train, and the Statue of Liberty, and
walking thru the Great Wall of China. He is a regular headliner at
Ceasar's Palace.
There is an interview with him, done by Gary Oulette, here in the Files
Area. T. A. has a very nice bio of him in his Encyclopedia of Magic
and Magicians and, if he will give permission, I will be willing to
post it here.

Re: MAGIC LINES
Good question... good point. My advice. Do this... take a line you
think might fit what you are doing... OK?
Then RE WRITE IT... SEVERAL TIMES... WORK ON IT... CHANGE IT...
MAKE IT YOU...
.
Here is an example. This was done in conversation about the same
subject some time ago with Dai Vernon.
.
The line: "Hold out your hand" (Spectator does so) "No, the clean
one!" (This, believe it or not I have tracked to the originator.
That person is Zaney Blaney.
.
OK, now to re-write it...
.
"Hold out your hand" (now you have to think of NEW PUNCHLINES.
.
The one I settled on (because at the time I was doing a lot of
stuff with people in auto business) is:
.
"Hmmm... Did you have a flat tire coming here...?"
.
It fit me, the situation and was NEW.
.
GO TO IT!

Re: BONES
Thanks for clarification. I had recently been told the story by
someone back east and that was the version he told me...
.
I think it's a great story... better than most...
.
Do you watch his TV Series? Mike Close is the first to get me
onto Mystery Science Theater 3000 - watched it back at his place
when I spend the month of May at the Indy 500.
.
Just happened to think... he also might have done Letterman and
"re told the story"...
.
While I got your ear... (or eyes)... I have THREE dates of
publication for a book from the 16th Century. "de Subtilitate",
by Cardano. I read about it three times, each with different date.
1550, 1554 and 1555. Do you know this book? Do you know the date?
.
If you talk to T A or Ricky... understand Ricky has the book,
maybe he can clarify???
.
Thanks again...

Yesterday, PRODIGY sports columnist Dick Schaap
reviewed a new mystery novel by William Murray, who
writes in the tradition of racetrack/mystery writer
Dick Francis. This new one (I'M GETTING KILLED RIGHT

Anderson, a professional magician and racetrack

I'm unfamiliar with the series, but it would be
interesting to see how (or why) the magic ties in with
the track.

It might also be interesting to know if any of you have

Pete, thanks for the reply regarding the patter lines. I've come up
with some lines that I THINK are all mine although I always hesitate to
claim originality with my magic. For instance when I do the wrist
chopper effect I've come up with "Relax, this works nearly everytime!"
and "Don't worry, this comes with a money back gurantee if it doesn't
work!" Actually I've come up with lots of lines for that number so
anyone is free to use those if it fits their act.
I like your idea of taking the lines written in the books I bought and
changing them around to making them my own. Besides, that way it
sounds more natural when I say them.

The story goes that he hired Del to perform at a private party in his
home in St. Louis, and secretly videotaped the act.
Mind you, I'm referring to the guy who got nailed at the Castle last
year (Rick Nieswonger); he's not the only one to have stolen from Del.
There's a guy down south -- I forget where -- who also had everything
duped. And in Japan, Mr. Maric did a bastardized presentation on Del's
dice ladder, without permission (but then, that's nothing new for him.)

I worked numerous times at one night club. Chatting with the guy

Pete,
The access is from the MELVYL system for the entire UC system.
Through it I can also access the Denver library, the Princeton
library, Yale library, etc. etc. The call letters and access
numbers are the various campuses that carry a copy of the book.
Almost all of the copies of that particular book are in special
collections, which means you can look, but you can't check out.
For about $50 one can receive a UC library card. This, in my
opinion, is worth its weight in gold.
I hope the info helped.

Well Pete you do have a gift for being spontaneously funny and
entertaining. I can't remember all of my lines either but I don't have
a natural talent for improvisational comedy or engaging in humorous
banter off the cuff. I remember reading an interview with Robin
Williams who is one of the all time great comedic improvisers and he
would practice and work at all of this off the cuff stuff and have so
much of it at hand that it all SEEMED off the cuff. I think he learned
that from Johnathan Winters, another great one.

Keep your eyes out for MCGAME.ASC in the file subsection. It's a basic
text adventure that takes you looking for magicians in the magic
castle. It should work in most BASIC's without any conversion, but when
you load it into your BASIC editor, save it immediately. This will save
it as a BASIC program rather than a text file. Instructions are
included.
Anyone catch Micheal Finney on Comic Strip Live. I've seen the Six Card

Finney recieved!

Re: MAGIC CASTLE - THE GAME!
Scott Cram has created and uploaded a fascinating new game! It is
based on finding magicians at the Magic Castle and it is really fun to
play! (Scott has included a disclaimer about the use of the Castle's
name).
Right now there are two versions of it available in the MAGIC! Files
Area:
MCGAME.ASC - This is Scott's BASIC program in ASCII format.
Scott originally designed it for an Amiga
computer, but believes that it will run under
BASIC on most computers. Since it is in ASCII
format, you may have to bring it into BASIC and
save it back out in "tokenized" format before it
will run.
MCGAME.EXE - For MS-DOS users, I've compiled Scott's program so
that you can download it and run it without needing
to run it in BASIC. You can run this version from
a DOS prompt.
When you first start the game, you will be prompted with
"Instructions?" Type Y and press the ENTER key to see the
instructions. To bypass the instructions, just press the ENTER
key.
One more thing - Scott apparently felt that you would be so hooked on
the game that you would never want to quit until you won a round! So
there is no exit! You have to use a "break" command to end in midgame.
On an IBM/MS-DOS system you can do this by holding down the CTRL
key as you press the BREAK key (or holding down the CTRL key as
you press the letter C if you don't have a break key).
THANKS, SCOTT!

Re: TABMAN STUFF
Just don't have this major block of time on my hands right now
(like I did in Maryland) to bs around on the MAGIC! system like I
was doing, plus no rich partner paying my telephone bills either.
Imagine it will take me a few months to get my feet firmly
planted on the ground to again find the two to three hours a day
that my former devotion to MAGIC! required. Will try to catch
those interested up, those not interested LEAVE....FAST FORWARD
..... OK, here's the story. Am basically in Wilson County,
Tennessee having moved onto a combination horse ranch/cedar
forest/lime sink complete with dirt road, dust and hillbilly
neighbors. I have decided that the ranch must pay for itself and
we are working to convert it to an eleven stall boarding facility
for busy country music professionals who like to keep a horse
around just to take a ride every once ina while. The place, Cedar
Forest Farm, currently has five stalls in a fifteen stall sized
barn. Anyway, am going to call it Rancho DeCarlo or probably,
Cedar Forest Farm since it has been that for umteen years. You
know me, I had to find another old house with at least a modicum
of history. Was built by a doctor in 1840. He was later a Colonel
with the Tennessee Volunteers, being a sawbones (youch!). Mostly
they did cows here til past decade when it turned to horses.
Anyway, this is keeping me busy nexst few months as there is much
building to be done and I am the main builder plus around 3,000
feet of board fence. Last barn we built was a recording studio
disguised to look like a barn which prepared me to now make a
barn disguised as a recording studio which should make the music
people feel right at home. Interesting concept but as Pete Biro
says, "perception is everything." I feel I must add, "it isn't
what you know but what you feel that determines the basest of
decisions" and most people in the musical arts are pretty "tuned
in." Har!
I have been visiting the magic clubs in the area to say hello and
get to know the guys in the tennessee triangle plus try to get
some people to sign up for the music city conclave. I have
decided that it has all the makings of a first class event for
the workers of intimate magic. The local guys think it is a
closeup convention, and I guess it must look that way, but it is
really much more. The signups are coming in slow, but I can't
imagine anyone within driving distance wanting to miss this
lineup of talent or the chance to get to meet so cool guys and
the december ads will hit about now with the new address and
phone number.
Also went to Steel Guitar World and bought a vintage Sho-Bud
double necked pedal steel. You know the one. The one they made
with the heavy metal frame. Going to woodshed for a
couple of months and then second for a couple of friends. Just
got back from the back nine and there is a four acre lake in the
walnut grove (it's been raining for three days straight with two
to go). House is on high ground though and it is good that the
water table is rising.
That's enuff for now!

the USA. Originated by English Music Hall dude, Arthur Dowler.
.
Topper Martyn (historian, etc) is sending stuff and writing the

has sent stuff!
.
Got to get Tamiriz's reply sooooooon.... So far earliest ref is
a guy from SPAIN did rings in 1500s.... Strugling to get the
correct spelling of his name... got DAMNATUS and DAMAUTUS. Is
written up in De Subtilitate, 1550 but I ain't got a copy to look

All (I know everybody reads this) any of you recall what year the

Re: BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND
This is a rough description of a trick David Lichtman first
posted on here many moons ago. It is meant to be shown to
magicians ONLY because it apparently uses many old familiar
ways to locate a chosen card. Every time they think they
know what you are doing you apparently ruin what you have
just done leaving them more perplexed then ever over the red
herrings they have been following. It's done with a force deck.
.
A FOOL (?) OF A MAGICIAN FOOLING MAGICIANS WITH A FORCE DECK
.
Do a poor false shuffle obviously keeping the top and bottom
intact.
Ribbon spread the cards making a big deal out of not peeking.
Put chosen card on top cutting the deck.
Allow spectator to cut the deck as many times as he wants.
Now shuffle.
Cut into 4 piles, hesitate, seem to do a magicians choice of
two piles then one pile.
Have spectator name a number between 2 and ten.
Count down that number replace cards back on top apologizing
and say we are supposed to SPELL the number.
Take next card and slide it onto the table. Ask what the
name of the chosen card is and reveal it to the stunned magi.

Re: COPPERFIELD
No one seems to have written anything on Copperfield its now 10:30
so here my shot. The pace of the show was great major illusion, talki
ng bit (mostly with audience participation), then another illusion,
etc. The lighting and staging of the water elevation was quite well
done, it was very theatrical - and convincing.
.
The lady that did the body penetration (ala Pendragons) make it look
easy - (obviously a trained dancer) it was very smooth. Having the
hoop rotate automatically to show her passing through his body was a
nice touch.
.
The highlight for me was the flying bit - it really looked good. The
timing of the take-offs and landings made it actually appear that HE
was initiating and terminating the flying. Floating inside the plasti
c box was very impressive (cork in bottle, except with a person). The
hook-up was invisible. After the show David came out to say Hi and
mentioned they are training an eagle to fly with him - that will be
awesome.
.
I was all set to do some mentalist stuff, but the layout at Cantor's
just didn't seem right to me - so Nathan and I just traded tricks
at our table. He's going to be a killer. I got a kick out of Dave.
When I had a three year old, you always had some of the kid's stuff

the kid could do a half hour out of that box. Good day - good people.

Re: DAVID COPPERFIELD SHOW
Well, hell, I guess I'm game to try to review the David
Copperfield show. If I had realized what awesome responsibility
was falling to me, I would have taken notes.
I am not even going to try to list illusion for illusion, or even
all of the illusions. Just the ones that made an impression on
me (i.e. that I remember off the cuff).
The opening illusion was strong except for a sleight technical
problem. (A bulb burned out on one of the wands that were being
bandied about.) This did not detract from the trick itself, only
from the aesthetics. A flimsy box with flimsy side panels was
shown to be empty. The appearance of DC was expected, but not
the appearance of DC on a motorcycle. A well done illusion, both
magically, and choreographically.
I was impressed throughout the show with how well DC moved. He
has a tremendous stage presence.
Almost from the first, the audience seemed to me to be cool.
There wasn't the kind of reactions that I felt the act rated. DC
didn't let this slow him up, or bring down his energy. The
audience reacted favorably, but not with the enthusiasm that I
expected. It felt like each illusion was milked for a little
extra applause. That might have been because of the audience's
reluctance to give all that it should.
We've all discussed the flying routine that DC has incorporated.
I must say that it is without a doubt the finest levitation
illusion I've ever seen. A friend of mine wondered what they
told the young lady who was carried in DC's arms. He said that
he couldn't have resisted the temptation to reach above DC
feeling for wires! It looked much the way I would imagine flying
to feel. (does that make sense?) I was completely fooled.
Anyone who feels a need to tell me how this was done will be
welcomed with open arms.
I thought that DC's version of the Pendragon's woman through the
magician illusion was extremely well done. DC is put into a
sinister looking device with enough room for just him. Then a
woman penetrates through the middle of DC with her hands, and
eventually travels entirely through him.
I was very impressed with some of the close-up work that DC
performed. He performed the tricks in the audience, and had a
camera on him, which was projected onto a big screen television
on stage so that everyone could see. A good way to handle close-
up. I don't normally think of DC as a close-up magician, but he
did several tricks admirably.
Several of the illusions seemed to me to be throw-aways. A woman
is placed in a box, that seemingly twists her head around. I
could spot the wig from our seats. I was also less than
impressed with his closing illusion. DC dons an opaque-faced
motorcycle helmet and jumps onto a motorcycle which is hoisted
up. Even the non-magicians in my group spotted the switch of DC
for the DC look-alike.
The card trick with Orson Welles is well done as entertainment.
It impressed me that Welles had such a stage presence even after
all these years. There is something very commanding about
Welles. I would periodically listen to hear any slip-ups on the
digital mastering of the sound-track, then would find myself
falling under Welles' spell again.
DC came out and spoke with us briefly after the show. It was
very nice of him to do so even before his autographing duties in
the lobby.
All in all, this was a FINE show. It was well deserving of the
two standing ovations. DC is a great showman, and an extremely
talented magician.
Anything to add?
Enjoy!

If there is one regret I had for the day, it was the lack of

move about and talk.
Any ideas?

Sounds like the LA crowd is a little "jaded" compared to those that
come to see DC at Caesars... where the customers CAN'T WAIT FOR HIM
TO DO ANYTHING....
.
Glad the FLYING 'NAILED' most.... the secret? Well, you got to
look in the Goldson books... heheeh...it is as old as the hills...
Maskelyne started it... Thurston followed, Keller and Blackstone
had versions... Carter did it (the Carter version was done by
John Gaughan at the L.A. Conference on Magical History...
.
But then John Gaughan took it to the next half dozen techie gener-
ations... One stop on the way is what you see at Lance Burton's
show... but the DC version is Guaghan's latest PLUS MUCH MUCH MUCH
MORE. FROM DC HIMSELF AND HIS STAFF AND FRIENDS...
.
Any one that has the interest should really dig in on the history
of the art... I have been going crazy on history lately buying
so many books from the 1800s it is MADNESS... but that is where
the foundations are...
.
I have a chapter in my book (now re-named: "The Encyclopedia of
Linking Rings") that says "there is nothing new"... and proves it.
.
Just got some info that a friend of mine in Belgium has a SOLID
SILVER SET OF LINKING RINGS... THAT WEIGH 22 LBS. Anyone out there
know silver value? How much is 22 lbs of it worth?
Does $70,000 sound about right?

Re: DAVID COPPERFIELD SHOW
I kinda wanted to see what everyone else had to say before I commented,
since I had the benefit of seeing most of the show twice recently.
My original Vegas show review is in message #23577, dated October 26th.
In that review I wrote "This is what magic should be like - beautiful
work, poetry for the mind and the soul." I stick with that statement.
I think that for a large number of lay people (and magicians as well)
David has become the personification of magic. Between his shows and
his specials he is probably the first name that comes to mind when you
mention magic to a layperson. And I think his reputation is totally
justified. David really raises magic to the power of art. Virtually
every move is worked out and delivered very nicely (A funny bit - in
his audience participation rope routine today he somehow managed to get
a knot in his own rope prior to cutting it. He smoothly got rid of it
and said, "Ha! A new move!"). His timing and delivery are terrific.
The whole thing is VERY smooth. And it isn't just because he is
bright, personable, etc. - it is because he works so damn hard! (See
the Oulette interview in the Files Area).
In two hours of theater, David is able to evoke a great many emotions
from the audience. The pace really never slows and the performance
alternates smoothly from large stage illusions to close-up. The fact
that for the close-up he is in the middle of the audience with tight
shots from the camera really does make a large audience feel the
intimacy of close-up. And a great bit today was that after a
succession of cute blondes selected from the audience for
participation, the tissue to rose went to an older audience member, a
fact not unnoticed by the older women in my group. I suspect that for
some reason today's audience was a bit more mature (older) than usual.
Maybe all of the kids were out of town for Thanksgiving weekend (this
could account for the slightly cooler reception someone mentioned -
take an upper middle age group, stuff 'em with three days of turkey,
and send 'em to the Sunday matinee and you are lucky if they remember
to applaud).
One highlight for me (and for Nathan, who knows the illusion from
Copperfield XIII) was to see the water levitation done live. David
hadn't done it at Ceasar's and it is truly beautiful. Someday, Nathan
dreams of seeing "The Big Black Box" - maybe next time. Apparently,
David travels with a lot of different material to fit different venues
and does different things in different places. Anyway, I felt that
getting to see the water levitation live was well worth the price of
admission - really beautiful.
The flying is, of course, superb. Every review here on MAGIC! has
raved about it. And the addition of an audience member is powerful
stuff! One comment I have heard and that I agree with is that the
video footage that preceeds it could be stronger. The intimate moments
when David sits on the stage prior to it and talks about how he dreamed
of flying really capture the audience. The video doesn't follow
through with dreams - it portrays failures to fly. There must be
something that could take its place. A long time ago, when I was in
television, we had a sign off film that was based on a poem that I
can't recall at the moment, but that had the line "I have slipped the
surely bonds of Earth, reached out my hand and touched the face of
G-d." (Or something very close to that). The video needs something
more like that. At first, the audience seems relatively unimpressed
with David flying - after all, they've seen Peter Pan. But the
"convincers" (several hoops are passed around David in midair and then
he flys inside a closed box previously inspected by the audience) are
what really do it. Suddenly they realize "Hey! This guy REALLY IS
FLYING!" and they go wild! The new part with the audience member is
SUPERB! And, as others have mentioned, after the show David told us
that in about a month he is adding an Eagle to fly with him. This is
strong stuff! His opening and the flying bring back the dreams of
every audience member and now that an audience member is in the air
with him, I think you can feel every audience member wishing it was
them. Really powerful theater!
In short, it always amazes me when one person (essentially, and no
insult to the others on stage because they make it possible) can hold
an audience spellbound for two hours. David does that, and he does it
very well.

Re: DAVID COPPERFIELD SHOW
By the way, I think that the funniest line of the day for our group
occurred after the show when David came by to say hello. He walked up
and said, "Did you folks ever figure out where to go to get something
to eat?"
Yes, we did, and Canter's wasn't too bad. The food was good (mine was,
anyway). We did have to break into four smaller groups, but I don't
know of anyplace that twenty-five people can really sit down and talk
to everyone without a lot more time. As Pete suggested, the real place
to "hang out" is either Desert Magic or IBM in Salt Lake City. Rumor
is that MAGIC! will have sessions at BOTH. Desert Magic will be our
official MAGIC! Anniversary Get-Together and IBM is terrific!

Where do you put Slydini, Ken Brooke, Dai Vernon, Larry Jennings,

impact the first time you saw them?...or your impression after seeing
them many times? You just can't win! In my humble opinion, Del's

others you mention. It did NOT impact on me as heavily as the first
time I saw Slydini, Goshman, and others who used skill and

home, and we had to get to her...
I was particularly impressed with the Welles section, and while I can
see it wouldn't do much for magi, I wonder how it affected laymen. For
someone who knows who Welles was, but who doesn't know th history of
the footage, this must have been _completely_ flabbergasting... Do you
know the exact year Welles shot that? My guess was early fifties...
Let's see... I agree on the switch on the motorcycle finale trick. I
think it was an execution glitch -- a movement problem that might look
quite good on "good" days... It's intereting that the water levitation
blew Nathan away -- it left me kind of cold. I bet the lay reaction
was closer to Nathan's than mine... Let's see, what else... I don't
know, what impressed me the most about the show was the attention to
detail. It takes a completely intimidating amount of energy and
concentration to keep coming back to the same material until you get it
so finely honed, and I noticed in a lot of the lines and bits that he
had worked very hard to perfect things... A study in great
showmanship...

Re: FISM SHOW
I haven't let Nathan use Windows yet, although the basic concept is
familiar to him from the Amiga. One thing I'm beginning to wonder
about after looking at a number of Windows programs this past week is
the problem of "Icon Proliferation" and the relative obscurity of a
great many of them. I don't know if some of them would make more or
less sense to Nathan.
On the Amiga, it is difficult to tell if he knows the icons or the
positions that they appear in. He does use them and the "double click"
to menu to his programs.
You just raised a thought provoking issue. Since the icons will
probably be around for some time, maybe we should let the 3 to 5 year
old set DESIGN THEM.

Yes, indeed - your memory is excellent - Mounds bars did indeed take up
flying while Tabber was here - guess I should teach them to hold Almond

milk balls and chocolate covered raisins. On hand at the moment are
slighly less than 4-1/2 pounds of the malted milk balls (I ate a few),
13 pounds of the raisins and, for emergencies, a few remaining Mounds
bars, a carton of Twixt "Cookies 'N Cream," and a couple of cartons of
Dark Chocolate Milky Ways.

Re: DC
If you missed my earlier message (month or so ago) about the Orsen
Welles film. It came from Himber's widow. She called John Gaughan
and told him she had this film of Welles doing some kind of trick
for her late husband, bandleader/magician Richard Himber. Himber
was a rare genius in magic... look in the 40s and 50s in the Genii
magazines (or find the book: Richard Himber and his Magic, Magico
published it) and you will see ads for AMAZING stuff. He had one
of the brightest people in the history of the art, Persi Diaconis
(now a Prof. at Harvard and a MacArthur Fellowship award recipient)
developing tricks for him... such as the Himber Ring... and Conrad
Haden as well as Merv Taylor making stuff. Himber would come up
with effects and tell the other guys to figure out a method. They
did such things as examinable locking liking rings, coins that
have never been duplicated and many others.
Anyway, Welles did this film for Himber. David got it from John
and they did some digital work to change "dick" to "david" on the
sound track.
.
Copperfield and his aides are so thorough they wanted to know all
they could about that effect -- even called ME to see if I could
recall the "card force" that Himber had used... not being content
to do "just any force"... I could go on, but I think you get the
drift.
.
On his 'FLYING' -- I understand it was in his possession a LONG
TIME and he rehearsed it every day for hours for a very long time
before finally putting it into the show.
.
No question we are seeing not only the best magician of the day,
but one who's PERSONNA crosses many lines... the Teenagers go
crazy for him and the women (at Caesars) in the 40s PLUS were all
agog...
.
The men want to kill him for being so good looking as well.
.
We are seeing what my feeling is the kind of audience acceptance
and adolation that must have been HOUDINI's in his prime!!!
.
It will not be long before people will no longer (and I am talking
lay writers, media and fans) say "who do you think you are,
Houdini?" -- "Copperfield" will soon replace "H"....

Will do ! It's always the Sunday after Thanksgiving. TV just doesn't

that some fool distributes corn torillas to the crowd and they throw
them at the marchers. We (the unknown shoppers) wear paper bags over
our heads so we have some protection to head shots, but some of those
leg hits can sting (I normally wear shorts, red tennis shoes, a
tuxedo tee-shirt, and top hat - with a large stuffed rabbit in the ca
rt - hence the unknown magician). Last year I had a sign on the side

Re: 4 OF CLUBS
Interesting story about finding a "merely thought of" card. Richard
Hatch, just after I first meet him, fooled the heck out of me with such
a routine. We were talking about killer vs. funny tricks, when he
showed me one that just floored me. He removed a card from a deck of
cards and asked me to name any card. Well, I said the 4 of clubs. He
turned it around and, sure enough, the 4 of clubs. I was floored. At
first he wouldn't tell me how he did it. After a couple of hours he
finally told me. He had originally wanted to show me the old gag where
you remove a card from the deck, have someone name a card, say "Right",
and place the card back in the deck without showing it. But in this
case he removed the 4 of clubs because he'd read somewhere that
magicians often name that card. Which I did!

Thanks Geno...we always welcome any information on potential sites.
The committee gets most of the meeting planner publications and we

Sorry Geno, but I don't have any other contacts to offer with regard
to obtaining Del Ray tapes. I had not heard of the Ken Norris tape
until it was mentioned here. That would probably be the tape to get
since I would expect it was shot by a professional cameraman with a
good camera. I would assume it was also shot with Del's approval.
The tapes I know of are strictly underground type material and would
date back to the mid '80s. Their owners are extremely tight with
them and copies have not been released to anyone insofar as I know.

Geno, I realize that Las Vegas is free territory. However, I would
never support taking the IBM there out of respect to Joe anymore than
I would support holding the IBM convention in Colon or the Catskills.
The country is big enough and there are enough available sites in
other locations so that we don't have to go head-to-head with those
who hold annual conventions in the same established market areas each
year. I certainly agree with you regarding the amenities offered to
magicians in Vegas. I have negotiated with the hotels for Joe on a
number of instances. I would also add that every city seems to have
its own particularly customs of negotiation tactics, and Vegas is
CERTAINLY no exception.

HIGH FLIGHT
John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Some brief excerpts from today's DAILY VARIETY review of David
Copperfield's Wiltern show:
"David Copperfield is a consummate showman and magician, and his
new show, currently on a national tour, reveals him at the height
of his powers."
"Each (illusion) is presented in the context of musical and
choreographic sketches that have both narrative and thematic
structure."
"The filmed highlight, however, is a clip of a young Orson Welles
performing interactive magic with the audience."

Not a bad idea, we could take turns pushing. Last year I had one of

groups (left and right side of street) and everone turns their cart
to face the crowd, on command we tip them back onto their back wheels
- at which point I hit the bulb and the little guy on the front of
the cart would drop his pants and moon the crowd. Cracked everyone up

Found the 33 1/3 record of Beyond the Fringe. The cast was Alan
Bennett, Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller and Dudley Moore. The show
was in the Edingurgh Festival '60. Played in London and after
road shows opened on Broadway Oct. 27, 1962.
.
Where are they now?
I have no idea of Alan Bennett. Dudley Moore we know of, of
course. Peter Cook was on TV for a while in a sitcom - as a
butler I think. He made a satirical version of Faust for the
movies. I think it was called Bedazzled. Dudley Moore was in this
also. Jonathan Miller returned to doctoring - at least to publish
a book on the body. He also has directed for the Metropolitan
Opera.
.
Much of the above is only from memoryl; so if anyone wants to
correct or expand they will be welcome. No hard feelings about
bad memory.

I understand Ronald Regan used a quote from this, to make it
famous. It seems to be a sonnet-not Shakesperean. It has 14 lines
and the first eight fit the form. The last six are not
Shakespearean. I realize this is more than one want's to know. Oh

My folks discussed the idea of the Michael Angelo drawings too. The
problem there (and somewhat with the current clip) is the introduction
of the notion of a "flying machine." There really should be no
connection with machines/devices, in my opinion. Maybe Icarus, who
dreamed of flight, even though he used wings. Maybe something like a
film taken from the nose of a glider.

David,
While I agree wholeheartedly with your review, I am reluctant to
heap mounds of praise on anyone without pointing out some of the
problems with the show. It was a FANTASTIC show, but there were
problems. More than anything, I was hoping to get into a
discussion as to whether or not to point out those problems.
I've done a fair amount of theatre, and find that the matinees
almost always have an older crowd. When I asked a friend of mine
(who happened to be a senior citizen) about this, she told me
that she doesn't see well at night anymore, and wants to drive
during the day to see a show. That might explain the age of the
average theatre goer.
Enjoy!

Re: COPPERFIELD
Jerry,
I certainly hope we have future chances to meet. My wife was
less impressed with the woman through the magician illusion than
I was. I was amazed at how smoothly that trick was done. She
wasn't impressed with the spinning head, or the David disappears
from stage, and is found on a motorcycle in the audience trick.
(Sounds like an old "Get Smart" Ah, the old David disappears
from stage, and is found on a motorcycle in the audience trick.
Third time I've fallen for it this month.)
She very much liked the flying. She has done theatre, and
thought that the movements were very similar to a theatre's
version of flying. But could find no means of support. Overall,
every person in my group (there were 11) was blown away by the
show. They've all been pestering me with "How did he do that?
How did he do that?" I've just given them Liberace's standard
reply: "Very well."
As to the mental stuff, I wasn't disappointed. You were right.
If you had tried something like that in the setting we were in,
it would have seemed contrived. I always prefer being prepared
for something that doesn't happen than not being prepared for
something that does.
Enjoy!

I believe the Moore version was marketed as LinKing Ropes -- an old
catalog might be helpful here. Warlock's version, though it used the
same gaff, was not really nicked; rather than a routine, it was a
single penetration -- linked to unlinked -- with a very specific and
original handling.

For those who are interested in such things, the finals of the Comedy
Magic contest were held at Merlin McFly's in Santa Monica on Tuesday
evening. The four performers, in order of appearance (determined by
random lot) were Scott Cervine, Mac King, Tom Ogden and Chris
Broughton.
The voting was done by five judges plus the audience, whose ballots
were accorded something like 20% of the vote. The winner was Tom Ogden.
The Tenkai Prize Party was just held in Tokyo. This year's recipient is
Hideo Kato. (He's a member of the Tenyo creative staff.) Guest
performer at the event was Tommy Wonder.
The Masao Atsukawa Creativity Prize Party was also held last weekend.
It went to a young magician from Osaka named Ichiba (I don't know his
given name). Guest performer at the event was Chris Kenner.

Charlie, the negative card is a reversal of a playing card. White pips
with a black surface. I took playing cards and photographed them to
size. I then cut the negatives and pasted them onto a blank card. From
there I started creating different effects for the cards.

Re: JAPAN
One of the funniest entrances in the history of show business (at
least the history of shows I have seen!) was the act two opening
of "Behind the Fridge" -- the 2 man show starring Peter Cook and
Dudley Moore.
.
Curtain opens and Peter Cook stands alone. He natters on (I saw
the show in London...) for awhile, suddenly looks to either side
of him and says, "Hmmm... you probably wonder where Dudley is?"
.
Just then, right alongside him a TRAP DOOR flies open and up
shooting out of the "cellar" comes Dudley. He goes up about four
feet above the floor (You though Copperfield was the first to fly
onstage) the TRAP DOOR closes and Dud lands alongside Peter and
quietly says, "Here I am".
.
I asked Dudley if the trap happened to be there and they "just took
advantage of it" and he say... "No, Bro... we wrote the show that
way and had to build the trap everywhere we worked it!"
.
Wonder if any FOLLOWING magicians took advantage of it?

I was once asked to "do a little something" at the end of the
Motorsports Press Assn., awards banquet some years ago, in San

Anyway... I though, mmmm... I could do the very funny Prof. Cheer
Rope routine. This involves having 100-feet of rope stuffed under
your clothing, one end at the sleeve and one down your leg and
with a special hookup so at the finale it pulls out your undershorts.
.
So I arrive all loaded... sit through all the speeches. It is hot
and crowded. By now the rope is soaking wet!!!
.
Final award is given... MC says, "Well, we had arranged for some
entertainment tonight, but it is running late... so I am sure our
magical member, Pete Biro, will be glad to wait 'til our next
meeting!"
.
No, I wasn't going to wait 'til the next meeting with rope up my...
so I smiled, waved and went to the john... funny sight me in there
pulling 100 feet of rope out my pants leg in a crowded mens room
in San Francisco... so weird I didn't get any offers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frankly, I think the Hugard-Braue "Invisible Pass" is not only
better, but much easier to do. Or a jog shuffle. Or use a short

a double under cut. Or if you just want to learn it go ahead, but

What always gets me is the persistence of some songs that became

both probably 3 to 4 hundred year old advertising jingles equivalent to
