Mahka Tendo does Kato's Card Happening on a regular basis, and well.
Scott Cervine has been doing comedy for several years. The act has some
elements from the earlier silent manip act, but has changed radically

Yes, I have a copy of the book. First Edition, I think (ha). The last
several trips have not allowed us sufficient time to spend together.
This trip, I had the time but you schedule was tight. It seems one of
us is often committed to something. Anyway, hopefully next time we will
be able to just sit, and kick stuff around. Whenever next time will be.
Thanks for the info on Judy.. It was really nice to see her again. But
a comment she made sticks with me... "Ring-off-wand." It's not the
first time I've heard that. It's just so easy to forget what really
works. We all seem to have a tendency to get caught up in moves.
I too enjoy our time together. It alwasy seems to go by so quickly.
That Barry fellow hasn't sent me his card. I've been looking for it in
the mail. But nothing yet. Anxious to see it. Well, since I'm typing
this on-line, I'm going to leave for now. Talk with you soon.

I've been meaning to learn the Free-turn-pass (It is on a list of about
100 other sleights, moves and tricks I want to learn) after I saw Bruce
demonstrate it in his lecture. He did it over and over and over again
and all it looks like is you are squaring up or turning the deck in
your hands. The way he explained it was the reason it is so effective
is that you would have to be in two places at once to see what the
magician is doing. A person on the right side sees one thing but a
person on the left side sees another. Now I'm curious. I'm gonna have
to go dig out that book and take a look at it. By the way, I thought
the rope routine alone was worth the price of the book. I use it all
the time!

Re: U-MATIC CASSETTES
The new issue of In-Synch arrived today. In addition to Marv Stern's
fax number, it has a couple of likely places you could try for U-Matic
Cassettes.
One is Studio Film & Tape, 6674 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, Ca.
90038. Telephone numbers are 800-824-3130, 213-466-8101, and fax,
213-466-6815.
The other is a place that RECYCLES videotape. They claim "we buy 'one
pass' 3/4", 1" and 2" videotape, restore it to almost original quality,
and sell it for 1/3 the price of new tape." International Video
Brokers, 12144 Sherman Way, North Hollywood, Ca. 91605. Telephone
numbers are 818-764-1402 and fax, 818-764-9138. "Full money back
guarantee if not completely satisfied."

The Orson (not Orsen, Pete) Welles version, from what I can tell, just
used a standard switch tray as the rings were brought up on stage; they
were never ID'd by the owners in most cases, though I think one stooge
mighta been used in some shows.
I don't get the Fetlock joke...
You should take a look in David P. Abbott's BOOK OF MYSTERY (p.80)
for his routine using a larger number of rings.

Unless I missed something, are you calling Interlude a variation of Zig

is a displacement/dissection effect and the other is a penetration. I
wouldn't recommend it, but I think you could do them both in the same
show and the audience would not relate them at all.

Kevin if you saw problems with the show feel free to share them with
us. That is one reason I asked for your wife's opinion as a non-

know how most of the effects are done they assume the lay audience
doesn't see through the effects - its very difficult to be objective
from an inside viewpoint.

many hands-on volunteer hours helping hammer the museum together from
scratch. The nonprofit musuem just celebrated its 20th anniverary,
and the 35 year old Douglas performs there monthly, giving historical

article mentions the Magician's Hall of Fame is "deep in the donated

Re: DAVID COPPERFIELD SHOW
Pete,
The problems I saw were almost nit-picky. It was a GREAT show.
I just saw minor things which may not even be there every show.
The light bulb burned out first thing. No big deal, and no way,
really, to prevent it. I didn't think of the flying footage
until it was brought up by someone else, but it is a valid point.
The footage is a downer. Some of the illusions are used by other
big name performers almost to the exact moves. I was frustrated
in watching the filmed escape because camera angles make such a
difference in what you are seeing. I was less than impressed
with a couple of the illusions, including the ones I mentioned
earlier.
But it was a remarkable show. There wasn't anyone I talked with
who wasn't blown away. I don't really want to dwell on the
negative aspects of the show, I was just surprised how many were
overlooked in the reviews.
Enjoy!

The second book that was a success for Bach was called

Re: HOLOGRAMS
Frank,
A hologram won't do what you want for your front door. All a
hologram can do is seem to project a 3-dimensional object in 2
dimensions. I think I can figure out a way for you to do what
you want, depending of course, on what you want. An interesting
effect would be to have a hologram of something entirely diffent
than your bar, and surprise them when they walk in. Sort of a
reverse of what you said you wanted.
Enjoy!

Kevin,
Even though the ads for the DMS are in GENII, by all
means write Joe Stevens and get on his mailing list.
Each of his occasional mailings is, in effect, a slick
glossy magazine-format catalog, containing mostly ads
for his products (props and books and videos to drool
over, many items you won't see advertised elsewhere),
and usually a feature article. The current issue,
which just came out, runs to 68 pages and features an
8-page writeup on Carl Ballantine, with lots of photos.
The address is Stevens Magic Emporium, 3238 East
Douglas, Wichita, KS 67028. I think you'll like it.

I don't watch his show but I was wondering if he ever included magic in
it. I had seen him at the Castle swap meet earlier in the year so I

Diamond lecture (it just seemed like a swap meet with all of his stuff
covering the stage!) buying odds and ends. I think I heard or read
somewhere that he is currently the highest paid under 21 star on TV at
the moment. Well, he can certainly afford the finest teachers and
instructions money can buy! I hope he does well, he could set another
good example for magicians.

Re: HOLOGRAMS
I think what you mean is a 2 dimensional surface which gives an appar
ent 3 dimensional image. This is true of reflection holograms (the
common white light hologram used in jewelry etc.). In a transmission
hologram you look through the plate and can't tell whether you are
seeing a real object or a 'virtual' image produced by laser light.
.
A transmission hologram is illuminated from behind, wheras reflection
holograms are illuminated from the front. I know of no way to get a
holographic image to appear in space without an intervening plate or
screen to accept the image. You could have a glass door that 'looked'
like a solid door and when you walk up to it have the projection shut
off revealing the gift shop on the other side. A better effect would
be to project a long hallway and have it shut-off when approached.

Re: DMS
I receive the Joe Stevens mailings free of charge. I
don't know what Joe's exact policy is on this. I
seldom buy anything from Joe by mail, not because it
isn't great, but because some of the stuff I really
want is out of my price range. But I have been to 3 of
the last 4 DMSs, and this is probably what keeps me on
the list. I usually buy a bunch of stuff from Joe at
each DMS, but I don't think they are taking names when
I do. (I heartily endorse the DMS, of course.) In the
current issue of GENII, Joe offers 4 catalogs for
$7.50, and he offers a separate video catalog for
$2.50. Probably the best way to get on the list is to
give them a call at (316) 683-9582. I've always found
them to be extremely friendly on the phone.

MCGAME should work on the mac. It's simply in ASCII format, which loads
into most basics. It's a text adventure, so it should work with little

works, how about adding digitzied pics on the mac version and upload

Re: SIX HOURS TO GO
I am down to my last six hours before my one big show I do each year.
I've been creating, reshaping, building, tearing down and rehearsing
all year for one show which I can only do once- do or die!
In the past it was easier to do because I did not place as much
emphasis on doing a good job of entertaining. I just wanted to survive
without collapsing from stage fright. Since I have been on Magic! my
attitude has changed alot towards my magic and my audience. The result
is I have a much better show which I am also more prepared and
rehearsed to perform. The only problem is like I said it is only ONE
show aimed at a specific audience. I'm going to have it recorded from
two angles to save it- I hope it will be worth saving!
One thousand hours of work is now boiling down to one hour of
performance. Wish me luck, here I go....

Forks Hotel after 21 successful years there and moving to a new
and much improved location in Lackawanna, New York just six miles

the end of the year. I'll tell you more tomorrow, but the new

Re: SIX HOURS TO GO
Regarding my show for the Post Office:
Why is it I always head straight for the liquor cabinet after one of
these? Overall it went very well although my nerves are a bit frayed.
The crowd was about 200 from infant to just this side of senile. My
mission that I chose to accept was to put together a show that would be
entertaining for the youngsters as well as the oldsters with a Postal
theme. I opened with a six envelope repeat. Just like the six card
repeat only the story is I am putting up all this mail to deliver but
I just don't seem to be getting anywhere. It ends up it was just a bad
dream as all of the envelopes disappear. That got me off to a great
start, they really liked that. Then I did a torn and restored type
trick using a certain Postal form familiar to all of the carriers. It
is the one we use to request help when we have too much mail to deliver
in 8 hours. As the story goes, the boss rips it up but I have him sign
one corner and I then restore the form authorizing me the help I
wanted. Next story took me into a pizza parlour for lunch where I
ordered a root beer and the bartender misunderstands me and pours me a
beer. The boss catches me but I make the beer vanish. These first
three tricks all had Postal stories which all of the carriers could
relate to but were visual enough that the kids could follow along as
well. Most of the balance of the show was filled with stock type items
but again most of them had a Postal story tied to them. The only
problem I encountered which is just one of those things, was my closing
routine. I did the Dukes Dyeversion you recommended some time back.
One of the kids I chose looked bright and enthusiastic and eager to come
up on stage but as soon as he did he froze and couldn't speak above a
whisper. He couldn't answer a question or anything, the poor guy just
had a glazed expression on his face. When the 24 feet of silk was
finally stretched out another kid in the front row WITH CHOCOLATE CAKE
ALL OVER HIS FACE AND HANDS GRABBED THE SILK AND WIPED HIS FACE ON IT!!
ARgh! (tm Biro) I couldn't very well punt the little angel out the
window and it's really my fault for not keeping better control. Oh
well, live and learn. Since this was a one shot show my only other
disappointment was my friend with his high resolution camera didn't
show up to film it. All I got was my crummy standard 8mm video cam
taping the show from the back of the room. I've already viewed the
tape and I sure would like a new camera! Anyway, as always it was a
good learning experience but I don't think I'll do another custom show
for them again. Maybe next time I will just go table to table and do
close-up for something different.

Sounded ok to me... if you did some schtick WITH the kid who messed u
the silk, rather than be upset or seem worried about it then it was
OK... I remember having gotten some kids up that were too young and you
just have to do it A LOT to figure the right ones... IT IS NOT EASY
and when you do a once a year... it is like Opening Night... and
Broadway show producers NEVER OPEN in town... always test and practice
for out of town small audiences... So.. don't worry... keep at it.

Re: FISM SHOW
Argh! (tm - Biro). Again, we are getting far afield with the "techy"
side of things. But I never found WordPerfect easier to use than
WordStar. I was one of the last people on Earth to start using
WordStar - for years I prided myself on my never having used it, then
had to turn to it one day and discovered that it was reasonably
comfortable. WordPerfect offers next to no guidance on its use. It
comes up with a blank screen and just sits there. The "reveal codes"
bit drove me nuts and the fact that they never refer to the keys by
their right name. There is an F7 key on my keyboard, there is NO
"Exit" key. But all the docs refer to the "Exit" key as if it existed.
When I wrote "Teach Yourself WordPerfect" I took the bold step of
refering to the keys by their keyboard designations. I think we
finally compromised and used both forms throughout the training
program.
I guess it is like the decision to perform a bill switch that uses a
thumb tip or one that doesn't. You can get good at either.

When I said I would not do another one of those shows again I was
talking about a "customized" show. I built it from scratch but it is
only good for that one audience. I suppose I could go on the road and
do it for other Post Offices but that's really not practical. I would
rather put the same amount of time and energy into a show that I could
perform for various different crowds. One that I could do over and
over and hone it into something really good. That's why I thought of
doing the close-up magic from table to table. If I had four or five
routines assembled I could stroll around and do more or less at each
table according to the response I got. I'm looking forward to seeing
Jim Sisti's Magic Menu for some info on that.

I have 640K of regular mem and 1.4 meg of Expanded Mem... so all
is just fine (I guess). I also use Mark and Release when I go into
Ventura so when I get out it releases all the available memory.
.
Before I had that I couln't (for what reason I don't know) exit
Ventura and then open WP 5.1.
.
But I can now. Wrote a couple of BAT files to do it. Just a pair
of keystrokes. I'm not as dumb as I was before... I've lost weight.

Yes, I understand about the customized nature of the Post Office show.
Still, you are apparently their top entertainer and they really go for
the custom material. Seems to me that they should let you take the act
on the road - boost morale in post offices all over the country.
I guess everyone has their cup of tea, but I find table hopping magic
to be very hard work! It is close-up work with the added difficulty of
having to be portable and do it again and again, and requires different
routines for adjoining tables. In my book, hardest would be walk
around magic, next is table hopping.

Walk around and Table Hopping should be the easiest. You don't need
large stuff... just a few impromptu type effects.
.
You want hard?
.
Walk on stage with 2,500 folks out there and keep 'em smilin' and
laffin' for 17 minutes!
.
I find the most difficult the big stage... but when you are rollin'
there is nothing like it... Try Trade shows.... 8 hours of standing
and working with chatter that is being monitored by the bosses all
day long. But what saves me in all of this is knowing my bill switch
with the thumb tip will always be there ready if I need it.

Re: SIX HOURS TO GO
Different strokes for different folks - My favorite is walk around,
next table hopping (ala banquets), next parlour and close-up, least
stage (never again will I attempt that - I'm too used to relating to
close encounter reactions).
.
My biggy for the year is this Friday (the 13th) for the Villa Park
Woman's League - will do table hopping for about 300 people. Booked
for an hour and a half. Then to a private party for walk around.
Should be a busy night.

I'm with you Pete. I use 3 sets of 3 when I do a banquet with about
five to ten minutes per table. Friday I'm goint to do 30 tables in an
hour and a half so I do about 3 minutes per table and move on.
.
2500 people for 17 minutes - no way Jose. I'll leave that venue to
you and DC - I know my limitations.

Interesting idea, Tab! Maybe the video shows 5-6 magi gathered around
a MAGIC! screen goin' "Oh! Wow! I don't believe it! Another thumb tip

If'n I had one of those fancy computer screens for an overhead

I'll keep thinkin' on a way to do it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Was not in Navy... Was in Army (First Division... the Big Red One).
I won a contest once for designing the Official Necktie for the
Army. Funny bit... I sent the design in and forgot about it.
.
Time to be shipped home. Get on boat. Arrive New York. Group of
newspaper people, photogs, etc. greet me as I come down gangplank.
.
They ask, "Are you going to accept the prize now or what?" I said,
"I don't know what you are talking about?" They say, "You just
won a trip to a German Ski Resort for designing a necktie." I said,
"Gee, I doubt it... I just spent 18 months in Germany and am on
my way home to California to be discharged... maybe they'll give
me the money instead!" Story made the papers because they thought
it was funny and it was a slow news day I guess!
