controversy is over and you are definately on the program for
IBM-SLC.

True, it was the Biro who put the caboose on the train. I guess
you're throwing that back at me since you know that me and Mr. Biro
are tight. AmTrak runs into the old Union Pacific Station located
a few blox from the hortel in SLC where the IBM is to be. Give
them AmTrack a call and find out what it would cost for a special

Re: ALLAN ACKERMAN

The IBM convention itself is Wednesday, July 1st thru Saturday, July
4th. I don't know how others would feel about leaving on Monday, June
29th and spending a night in Vegas; then, if possible, taking the train
overnight on Tuesday nigh (if there is such a train) to arrive in SLC
on Wednesday morning. Return could be SLC to LA on Sunday, July 5th.

Guess we need to know when the trains run and what is available. Also
if we end up paying lots extra for the Vegas stop. An additional
problem might be that some shows are dark on Monday or Tuesday nights.

Perhaps see what you can find out preliminarily about the train
schedules and group fares? I think the number _may_ be 800-AMTRACK.
I _know_ it isn't 800-TRAINING!

you do it with your left hand, holding the thumb tip to your left ear
with your right hand.

Yeah, but stage goes for no more than 17 minutes, according to what
we've been describing here (I DEFINITELY leave the 2-hour one man shows
to others!), while walk around goes on and on and on. And on stage,
no-one steps on your foot, spills their drink into your pocket, or
tries to walk off with the props.

They use it in fron of John's, squares and cops.......the Showman's
league was here last week and they really are a bunch of interesting
guys..........your name would be Peazeete Birasoo.. I would be
Genenaso Muanareazee (Munar-e-azee)....Prettey wierd for us grown men
to talk like this.
By the way you heard it first.....yesterday I was contacted by a major
hotel in Las Vegas, and they requested a close up room. I have been
doing some special things for them in the past. It looks like a 95%
done deal.....seats 85, and they want to build a complete marketing
plan around it..........I saw the room, and it will be perfect. Plus
they have a great marquee and moving message display that will support
the idea. I will build a show ticket in three ways; 1) ticket only
without drinks 2) with drinks and dinner, and with 3) a room promotion.
They advertise in the LA Times. How is your bill change, can you
work?

I wuz thinking about putting out a book of trix, advice, etc
after the MCCMS each year and liked the Frog's self publish route.
I remember him sitting at the Hotel DeCarlo putting boox together
at 5am and remembering all the fun it looked like he wuz having.
What is the point of it all. Dunno what else to do. Something to
generate some funds (???) and get the name of the conclave
more out there. Since I'm dedicated to having NO LAME TALENT at
the event, maybe some of the guys would contrib a trick or
two. Jim Sisti is doing a good job of publishing stuff, maybe he'd
be interested in putting something out. Dunno, am up to my neck
with MCCM rite now. This is fun stuff.

As it turns out, only one of the performer/lecturers will allow any
video taping of their part of the show and that one will allow it
only for NON COMMERCIAL usages. I don't want to try to do a video

.
That was a very quick look-through. Sorry if I missed anyone or
mis-spelled.
.
I will give a more detailed review after I have been with the
book for a while. There is a lot of material and each item costs
about $ .21 so it is a good buy. Most of the material does not
take an expert to perform, so it seems.
.
A couple of negatives at the beginning. There is no index, so you
can't look up a person or a publication. Even with the above list
of inventors, most of the material is by Hartman. Most of the
names are listred as the inventors of the original on which the
variation is based. Maybe this is not a negative as Hartman knows
good stuff.
.
In giving basic sleights I can't understand leaving out Biddle
Count or the Ascanio Spread. Maybe there were no tricks which
used them, so OK.
.
If anyone gets a copy I'd like some feedback.

Re: HARTMAN

No, no. The Hartman book is nothing like the Encyclopedia of Card
Tricks. Rather, it is a thorough compilation of Hartman's material from
the past -- that which had been in his own books and also his magazine
contributions -- with a great deal of updating and revision plus 1500
new Schmidt illustrations. There are also quite a few previously
unpublished items.

Cy's list of names was misleading; the only contributor per se to this
book is J. K. Hartman. The listed names are those he cites as technical
references or inspirational sources.

Re: CLEVER GREETINGS

Obviously, Pete, if you are doing a book on Linking Rings, it should be
put in a THREE RING BINDER....
...seriously, whatever you decide to do, try to get a binding that
lies flat, so the reader doesn't have to put a weight on it to hold it
open while practicing a move. That was the nice thing about the GBC
edition of Erdnase; comb-bound, it was not all that attractive, but
certainly was one of the more functional editions.
On the Whit Haydn thing -- I am not sure of the situation, and how
Whit feels about the copyright holder -- but what you might ask is if
it is all right with Whit if YOU describe his routine IN YOUR OWN WORDS
-- and see what happens.

Re: HARTMAN

I certainly have no objection to your list, I just think it should be
made clear who did what. The quality of the material in the Hartman
book must indeed be judged by its source -- and its source is J. K.
Hartman, who has been more conscientious than most in naming the
starting points for many of the plots and/or moves in his routines.
Such credits are, of course, important; would that more writers in
magic took the effort. However, it is clear that your list presented
the wrong impression, at least to Pete Biro, who took it to mean that
the book was a collection of assorted inventors' tricks.

Let's see - I believe that the women who perform with Lance wear tops
during the first show and no tops during the second. There may be some
with preferences in light of that, so a poll of those going might be in
order. It is possible that Nathan might like to join us, and, if so,
I would prefer the first show. Not that I'm overly concerned about the
absence of tops in the second show, but because he tends to go to sleep
a bit earlier. As to the S&R backstage tour - YES INDEED, that should

attorneys, only they'd be AFTER rather than before. Possibly even

Quite obviously, if the tricks have external sources for their plots
and/or moves they are not uniquely Hartman's. However, there is an
established standard for attribution in the field, and by that standard
the book warrants description as being a collection of Hartman's work.
There's no reason why he should be penalized for his honest efforts in
listing sources!

Re: COMPUTERS

Marvin,
I, for one, would disagree with limiting the scope of the
conversations on this board to magic. While I agree that that
should be the main thrust, a lot of what this board is doing is
creating and fermenting friendships and relationships. Any
relationship that is based on one thing only is in pretty deep
trouble.
I've learned much about the participants of this board based on
non-magic writing, and have gained a view of their principals
which does directly affect the magic that is done.
I think that a round-table of intelligent people is too valuable
to limit so severly.
Enjoy!

can be done without cover, is indetectable, and is easy to perfect.
Unfortunately, there were mucho legal challanges, and the issue was

I think that your idea of a "remake" of the Fitzkee trilogy is
interesting and that it would probably do a lot of good in that it
would mean that there were more books espousing the same important
viewpoints. But I don't find the Fitzkee books themselves to be at all
out of date. Except for a few of the examples and some of the changes
that have occurred in the language ("smart" meant something different
40 years ago) I find the trilogy to be very current.

Re: HOLOGRAMS

Did you see my response to Kevin regarding the different types of
holograms ? If not, briefly there are two kinds popularily used. One
is the reflection hologram that can be seen in normal white light. Th
e light hits it from the front - all of the jewelry and stuff with
holograms use it. The other type are called transmission holographs.
You have to shine laser light on a PLATE from the rear and the human
eye reacts to the interference patterns the same as if it were
looking through a window and seeing the object(s). You can't tell the
difference, whether you are seeing the REAL objects being illuminated
as they were when the holograph was made or you are seeing the hologr
aphic reproduction.
.
There is no way to get a holograph to APPEAR in space, without an
intervening plate - just as if you projected a movie into space with-
out a screen to colimate and reflect the image back to you.
.
The only way to do what you want is to have a glass door with a
holographic plate on the back (inside) and then shine a laser on it
from the rear - rather than a door it could look like a hall or cave,
etc. When people came close to it you could shut off the laser and
the glass door entrance and the gift shop would APPEAR. A hologram
that large would cost a bundle - probably not worth it !

To my knowledge, the name "Chink-A-Chink" is not derived from the

That said, given that it is pronounced exactly the same as the slur,
I've long contended that magicians would be wise to discard the title,
at the very least in terms of public performance.

got was printed so dark (photos) you could barely make out what
you needed to see. Joe Stevens told me Klause himself was 'REALLY
UNHAPPY' with it....
.
Re: Content... I just hate (my own personal reasons) the switching
money with a Thumb Tip tricks... argh... so IT IMMEDIATELY TURNED
ME OFF...
.
That is why I told David I didn't want to review it, as I was
prejudiced against it because of that trick being in the front part
of the book.
.
NO QUESTION KLAUSE'S HANLDINGS are as thought-out and well-designed
as anyones... Just think there is too much of pictures of and
praise for the author in the book. Just personal observations.
.
Kinda like Phil Temple's books -- lead stuff is on the author...
.
There was a big time (but lousy) Indy Car team once. Big Money,
NO Talent... they put out a glorious Four Color book on the team,
the company, the driver, mechanics, etc... but the LEAD WAS A
FOUR PAGE SPREAD ON THE GUY THAT WROTE THE BOOK... It became the
laughing stock of the pressrooms!
.
I think a good approach on the 20 guys that wrote about Klause,
would have been to put the picture, DARYL, SKINNER, ETC., and
for Klause to have written about THEM.
.
That is the tack I am taking in my work right now. I talk about
others that have done good things with the trick, Haydn, Jay
Marshall, Koran, Namreh... I want to keep their names in the public
eye and get them all credit in one place...
.
And those that dug up the historic stuff for me... I credit them
for the find...
.
I think Caveney had a good line when he wrote about himself, "I
am not a creator, but a discoverer".... a great honest line.
.
I also like the line "I have a creative memory"...
.
Will let you know when I hit town. I think FOR SURE it will be
the Sunday in the Middle of Seabrooke's run, as I have a photo
shoot in Anaheim on the Saturday before.
.
Be in tuch.

14 (Abbott) 20 (Soo) got to go back on the thread to see what this
refers to.
.
Good Chung Ling Soo story....
.
When Bobbi and I moved up to Mendocino we were looking for the
posters and art to hang up in the new house...
.
We thought we had labelled everything well. She said, "I can't find
the Chung Ling Soo poster"... so we went out looking again...
.
She said, looking thru the stacks, "here's one marked S&R, one
marked "Carter" one marked "500", is that the Indy 500 poster?"
I said, "I can't remember"... we went on... later I said, "I don't
recll and Indy 500 poster"... went out and opened it... it was
"SOO" the S looking like a 5.
.
Not a great story... but one that had to be told.
.
Bad part... she got it in the divorce... Only Magic Poster in the
world she liked because it didn't show any magic. Is "Chung Ling
Soo and his 10 Assistants" -- I think one hangs in the Castle at
the upstairs bar area. Was a gift from Seabrooke.

Randi story. I was with him in San Francisco years ago whilst he
was doing a TV Talk show debunking Geller. It ran late and we
rushed to the airport... The security crap had just been installed
and he rushed on in and BINGO... all the bells rang... the whole
deal went nuts... They were now going over him with the hand held
metal detectors... and DING DING DING.... All of a sudden he
remembered all the magnets he had taped to the inside of his
thighs.... FUNNY SCENE TO SAY THE LEAST....
.
First time I ever went thru Airport Security, was in East going to
Europe. They didn't have metal detectors yet, and were "quickly
frisking" everyone in a small cloth framed area.
.
A very SERIOUS-LOOKING Federal Agent looking kinda guy motions me
into the cabinet. Says, "raise your arms" ... he puts his arms
around me and starts the usual "frisk" motions... I say (we are
face to face) "CAN YOU GUESS MY WIEGHT?"
.
The poor guy fell apart with laughter. Couldn't continue... was a
complete melted down mass.... Fortunately, when he regained his
composure he said, "Get outa here..."

Obie O'Brien is in charge... but to save you time I will, today,
unless the phone rings... MAIL YOU A FORM TO SEND IN.
.
I hope I found the TWO references Richard meant. One was the
story about the DAMAUTUS performance in Brussells around 1530...
and I actually found the 1949 Journal de la Prestidigitation that
Hugard quoted from... and found one of the people in Brussells
that was there (not in 1530, but at the 1949 re-enactment of the
command performance, with the SOLID SILVER 22lb set of rings).
.
Don't know what the other ref. might have been, but did find
several other interesting lines and comments.
.
My most recent discovery is that in the 1800s edition of "The
Magicians Own Book" Dick and Fitzgerald, the first published
work on the Rings in USA, WHERE IT SAYS, "GET A BLACKSMITH TO MAKE
.... ETC..." that Jay Marshall in the 30s did have a blacksmith
make his first set of rings. Brass and 11 of them. He even remembered
town and name of the blacksmith!
.
And Will Rock had German POWs that knew how to make thing in metal
fabricate a set of rings for him. He didn't want them to know the
secret so he didn't have them cut the key. He wound up not cutting
a key an devised a routine without one. I have that coming. I
also have the engineering drawings coming from England on the
first "locking key" set... as well as the Paul Fox engineering
drawing for his rings...
.
This book project has turned into a GREAT BIT OF FUN, DETECTIVE
WORK...
.
oh, while I got your attention... need a copy (not recent reprint)
of HOYAM... got one?

Re: FISM SHOW

THINK ABOUT THIS. When you see somone like (sadly he is gone) a
Johnny Paul, Larry Jennings, Jay Marshall (yes Jay) or (again
deceased) Frank Shields... take a bill. Seemingly just CASUALLY
fold it up and tear it up... tossing the pieces away... or making
a 5 into a 100 --- YOU SEE REALLY STRONG MAGIC.
.
When you see a magic dude doing the "slow challenge to you" fold
and unfold ( AND THERE IS NO WAY IN THE WORLD TO DO THIS CASUALLY,
OR WITHOUT STARING AT THE BILLS YOURSELF... AT THE MOMENT OF THE
SWITCH) with the TTip.... AFTER you have seen the effect done
without one... WHY BOTHER.... AND... AND... AND...
.
WHO THE HECK NEEDS THAT "OTHER" FOREIGN, SECRET DEVICE in your
hands at the same time you folding and unfolding a bill. If anyone
wanders to your side YOU ARE DEAD MEAT!
.
Prove to me it is even close to as good and I will never post
another message on this board. EVER.
.
That's not a fair deal...
.
Just think about it.
.
Try this. Fold a bill to about 1x1 (1 less fold than the TTip mode)
.
Finger palm it. Take another bill fold to the same size. (I will
try to draw this below.
-----
| |
  ----
 | |
  ----
.
This should be 2 bills, overlapped, the orig away from you.
(can be reversed if you are better doing with left hand)... LOOK
at your audience... make a comment... forget your hands and the
bill(s)... on the laugh or reaction, with one hand, pull the
borrowed bill back and push the switcher forward. Finger palm the
borrowed. Now, you can do one of many things. Go into pocket for
a match (ditch the bill) burn the visible bill. Or get a large
paper clip... or clothes pin... something to hold the bill.
A little tiny magic wand... a crystal... ANYTHING NATURAL TO YOU.
.
The work is done... then let 'em wait before you reproduce it...
.
let 'em sweat... I HATE FOLDING IT UP IT CHANGES YOU REFOLD IT AND
IT CHANGES BACK... WHAT KIND OF THEATER IS THAT...??????
.
By now gthe rest of the board must fell I am going nuts over this.
.
NOT SO... It is just the point that it is important to take this
stuff and THINK ABOUT IT... is it good magic for the audience?
Is it good theater? Is it easy enough to do so you THINK ONLY OF
the audience and presentation. Is it OK if someone moves to your
side to look?
.
Does it look LIKE you are showing someone HOW CLEVER YOU ARE AND
*ISSING THEM OFF....
.
I rest.

Fave close up: WAS Johnny Paul's tearing up a bill, making it float

Fave card trick: Super Count (done by the late Frank Shields).
(note: both bar magicians)
Fave stage trick: Kaps smoking thumb.
Fave Illusion: Was Lady Without Middle (Blackstone Sr.) NOW:
Copperfield Flying.
Fave Close Up trick I DO: Edward Victor Bat Trick
Fave Stage Trick I DO: Linking Rings
.
Least favorite tricks: Zombie, Double Dove production. Just like
the thumb tip bill switch... WHEN you see a bird worker tie two
silks together and put the knot in his mouth IS THERE ANYONE OUT
THERE THAT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IS COMING...
.
Least fave close up trick: Any version of cup and something where
the mage FLASHES HIS/HER LOADS AND WORKS IT TOO LONG.
Least fave card trick: Any worker that shuffles, leans back and
looks at the cards as they slowly shuffle and count ... WHO ARE
THEY FOOLING?????????

Since it would appear that the "Chink" in "Chink-A-Chink" is not
related to the ethnic slur, it would appear to be a legitimate term.
There is a word, chink, that is not derived from anything connected
with Chinese. To eliminate all words which have the potential for
sounding like slurs would require a massive change in language.

Funniest bit that I ever knew of happened to an acquaintance of mine.
His company was called "E. Murphy & Company," named after the Murphy

he wasn't talking about that). Anyway, someone got his PIN and royally
ripped off calls all over the World, some $ 11,000+ in one month. The
calls were placed from a hotel in San Diego. When he argued with phone
co., they checked with hotel and found out that a "MR. MURPHY" _had_
been there at the time, so they said, "Your company President made the
calls." He had a devil of a time proving otherwise!

Re: FISM SHOW

I think that the great part of this is what you mentioned at the end of
your message (the rest was good too!) - that the really important part
is to THINK ABOUT IT. To think about what the effect means, what it
does, and the way that _YOU_ want to do it. I still don't see where
either method is "better," despite your description. Personally, I
like having the extra bill palmed LESS than I like having the thumb
tip, but you are 1,000% correct that the focus should be on what you
want to achieve, not on how it is done.

Re: ROGER KLAUSE IN CONCERT

Ee;28327
HERE IS A RUNDOWN OF THE MATERIAL IN THE NEW KLAUSE BOOK, "Roger
Klause in Concert" -- Orchestrated and Arranged by Lance Pierce.
.
Hardbound, 8 1/2 x 11, Blue with Beautiful Dust Jacket. Four color
pic of Klause entertaining Roy, of S&R with Muhamad Ali, while his
wife Wanda watches (on back of jacket). 255 pages.
.
Tricks include: Miser's Cornucopia (coins produced from rolled bill),
Smokeless (vanish of cig), Sponge and Sleeve, $100 Bill Change, Torn
Restored Bill, Even Monehy, Cheque and Chimericl Bill (all thumb tip
work with Roger's excellent handling and his PHILOSOPHY of the "Half
Move" (worthy of study even if you (like I) don't like thumb tip
work of this type.
.
Oh, Billusion and The Operator are two more bill/Ttip effects. This
takes us up through page 104. All the descriptions are EXCELLENT,
but S A D L Y either the photos were poorly done or the printer
totally blew it... many of the snaps are TOO DARK to see clearly.
You can work it out... but in a big beautiful book like this the
half tones deserve much better.
.
I have been told by a third party that Roger was very unhappy
about this.
.
About a dozen pages on card handling, Soft Double and a killer
block transfer system and GREAT HANLDING on Herbie Zarrow's wonderful
shuffle are included. Good, NO TRICKS!
.
a HANDLING of the Purse Frame follows with a very Ramsay/Vernon
approach for the set up. Good.
.
Roger next includes HIS handling for the Seabrooke Note in Wallet.
Just the part of copping the note from the envelope. No routine, as
you are suggested to work out your own.
.
A 3 coins across, with an expanded shell follows. Very very good
stuff here.. Klause at his best.
.
Another trio of card things is next, I like the Bantam Card, a fun
routine with a single mini in a regular deck.
.
NEXT is a gem... it is a four ring linking ring routine to Rhyming
Patter. He then follows with the suggestion to do Whit Haydn's
four ring routine next. Since Whit's effect is still marketed by
Magic Inc., it is not described. (Too bad for me too, wanted to
include it in my ring encyclopedia).
.
Roger's subtle die tube handling is now explained in Red and White
(a color change thru hands silk routine).
.
Roger's idea for setting and working the Koran Ring-Flite is next.
His "get set" is a good idea.
.
The final item is his version of the Himber Linking Finger Rings.
I have not gone over the details of it here... there are many
ways to do this, it is a great effect.
.
I guess the reproduction of the pictures is just one item that
bothers me, but the material is worth the effort and you can still
see good enough to make out the details in the photos.
.
Things like that just happen.
.
There are, however, 20 letters (along with pix of each person) to
Roger... I feel this was a bit much as each is telling us how
great they think Roger is... I think his material would tell us
that and it was a bit of overkill. I would like to have seen
Roger tell us what he thought of each of the guys pictured!!!
.
It's only my opinion, but.... (line at left from Clarke Crandall)
who REALLY TOLD IT LIKE IT WAS....
.
SALEH, as someone else used to say....

Re: URI GELLER

As I commented to T.A., I am clearly at a lack of knowledge here. I
will now educate myself, starting with the current issue of M A G I C,
if it ever arrives...
As I asked T A, are you aware of whether or not Geller is billing
himself as an entertainer, or still claiming psychic powers... Another
interesting thought -- if he is not billing himself as an entertainer,
and as one of true abilities, where do you draw the line between he and
Kreskin? I saw Kreskin recently on cable, and he didn't preface or
follow his performance with any kind of disclaimer, nor should he. By
the same token, I'm sure it would castrate your performance to let the
audience know specifically that you were more magician than psychic.
So, my question is, at one point are you defrauding the publicw?
Clearly on some level the public UNDERSTANDS that you and Kreskin are
entertainers, and are not true, pyschically powerful beings. But in
Geller's case in the seventies at least, one sensed that the public did
not have the same understanding. Let me restate that -- there was much
dicussion that the public did not have that understanding. So -- where
do you draw the line, and how do you communicate the "truth" to the
audience without... well, communicating the truth?

At no point did I sugest eliminating all words which have the potential
for sounding like slurs. Indeed, the term "chink" when used to describe
a cut in a surface is clearly unrelated to the ethnic slur. The title
of the object-assembly trick, on the other hand, has no frame of
reference to the ears of laypeople, and can easily be taken as being a
derogatory title. In fact, I have spoken with laypeople who had just
that reaction.

My comment, I must emphasize, had nothing to do with the "p.c."
movement; as clearly stated in my essay, I do not like or approve of
that. However, I think any magician who continues to use "Chink-A-
Chink" as a public title is an idiot.

It is the sheets that are unromantic! There are most certainly

Theoretically true, perhaps -- but in the specific case here, it seems
little trouble to eliminate a potentially offensive term which is

I think entertainers should hold to a higher sensitivity on these

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N.4

In general I think that the use of titles or names to magic effects is
largely supererogatory in performance for laypersons. And it doesn't make
much difference whether that title is "Chink-A-Chink" or "Professor's
Nighmare."

I must admit though, that while I would probably be in essential
agreement with a great deal of what you wrote in your Parallax column,
I did find that there was a certain definite P.C. "spin" to it. And
that clearly, both in your comments there and your comments here, you
feel compelled to attempt to state that it is not an example of that,
so something seems to be haunting you about being too close to that
brand of thinking.  Perhaps that is a topic too long to go into here;
certainly, I am unwilling to do so.

I would point out though that dismissing anyone who doesn't agree with
you as either a "moron" (the Parallax column) or an "idiot" (here) is
generally considered a logical fallacy and a sign of a weak argument.
And that although the terms are generally archaic, both moron and idiot
have precise medical definitions which their casual use abuses.

Re: CASTLE

To the best of my knowledge (I haven't yet read all of the new
messages) no-one has reported on activities today, so I'll take a shot
at it.

I met Marvin Stern for lunch at the Castle today. We were joined by
Stan Lake, who had an appointment with Kevin and Karrie (sp.?) Curtin
but who had apparently misplaced them. After lunch, the Curtins caught
up with us and we attended Joe Farina's close-up show. Joe does a nice
job and it was a lot of fun to watch him work.

Marvin then went back to his office and Stan, Kevin, Karrie and I
toured the Castle. We caught part of a Parlour audition which was
pretty good (alas, I didn't get the mage's name) and which included a
"dinnerware into balloon" bit that was very intriguing. We then went
down to the Library (by special appointment) and chatted with T A for
a few minutes.

Stan had to leave, but the Curtins and I went down to Marvin's office
for what I will call the $ 126 Pizza Caper (Marvin doesn't know about
this yet). Knowing that the Curtins had not yet had lunch due to the
mixup, Marvin had two terrific pizzas waiting for us (the man is a real
Prince!). He robbed his own soda machine of drinks, took us on a tour
of his facility, and entertained us with some really good card tricks.
We had a great time! OK, how does the $ 126 Pizza Caper play into all
this? Well, I figure Marvin must have paid at least $ 20 for the
pizzas (they were really good) and when we left we found out that we
had parked in the wrong time zone and been ticketed for $ 53 each! As
Biro would probably say - AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Oh, well - that last packet trick was a killer!

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N.4

As I just finished noting to Max, I've never thought it was
particularly significant in most cases to name an effect during a
performance for laypersons. Most of the names mean little to them and
the incorporation of the name probably distracts from the general
performance. So the suggestion that no-one ever name "Chink-A-Chink"
doesn't bother me much.

As to the need for entertainers to hold to a "higher sensitivity on
these matters" it seems to me that it was only yesterday (OK, maybe a
few months ago, you know how time flies when you are having fun) that
you suggested to me that entertainers (artists) where not obliged to
any ethical standards. Why should this be different?

It isn't the same thing at all. What we're talking about here is doing
something offensive UNINTENTIONALLY. Any artist is likely to offend
some people -- and while that may not be his or her aim, they can't be
concerned with it. Offending someone for no artistic reason is
entirely different.

you prefaced the show with a statement that made it clear that you do

Unless of course you have genuine psychic abilities, at which point it

I sent a few notes Priv, but must have gotten lost in the move,
so here goes.

Lost one bird mysteriously a while back. A few hundred bux later,
lab work showed Psitticosis, very contagious and potentially
deadly to all my flock. Have been dosing everybody in the house
since then (not fun since some are not tame!). This happened
about the time the car broke down to the tune of another two
hundred or so. Last week I was riding my motorcycle home from
work and my clutch cable snapped and I coasted to the nearest pay
phone. Called my wife only to find out someone just stole the
plates off our car! After a long nite with a tow truck and police
reports, got home to find Pete's notes in the mail box (thanks
Pete for rescuing an otherwise awful week). Tonight, came home to
find my dog ATE my MC boots. Other than that, nothing much
happening. And you?

Look for a UPS pkg in about a week.

Didn't have a chance to read Ackerman's notes, but they looked
well made. Comb bound 8.5 x 11, about 20 pages Laser typeset,
nice covers. In my opinion, he is a true Amateur(in the nicest
sense),involved in magic purely for the sheer joy of it. Always
smiling, willing to help out anyone who asks. It seems he's not
one to jealously guard his secrets, as I've seen him gladly
explain any or all his work with anyone who is interested.
Mentioned MAGIC! to him a few times. With him owning a computer
business, he shouldn't have any trouble finding a machine,
finding TIME is another matter. One of these days, maybe.

All of us in Vegas are anxiously awaiting our January SAM meeting
where he has promised to share his Castle lecture with us.

Met Howie Schwartzman last week, he says to tell you and everyone
else "HI". Showed us some wonderful stuff. Geno bought one of the
prettiest mirror penetrations I've ever seen, and I picked up a
set of wallets for an effect he calls Leather Impact. Very clean
card routine involving enclosing each card in a leather pouch to
prevent (?) any tricky moves. Actually makes Elmsley, Jordan and
other counting moves a BREEZE. Once Howie brought out his VISA
machine, he kept it busy the rest of the night.

Hope to see you at DMS, (hope I can GET to DMS, my supr just
informed me of a possible trip in March. This has fallen on DMS
weekend four out of the last five years. Last year I got lucky.)

T.A.,
Okay, I'll explain. I was wrong.
Okay, not wrong, but using my words imprecisely. When I said he
wasn't a good magician, I meant that his illusions were
unsophisticated enough, that I, a non-professional, could
determine and duplicate the effect. (These are only effects I've
seen, and I have definitely NOT seen everything he does. [That
was Kevin covering himself.])
I should not have used the word "magician" only in the context of
the illusions, as the performance and the manipulation of the
audience is as much a part of being a magician as the illusion.
Make sense?

Re: DO MEN OR WOMEN?

Pete,
I've got to jump in here, and say I agree with you. I have a
friend (female) who believes so strongly in psychic powers, that
even when I duplicate to the letter a feat she will point to as
proof of psychic abilities, she won't even CONSIDER the
possibility that she is wrong. I am very much a skeptic on this
matter. I can't say that it doesn't exist, but I've yet to see
proof that it does.
I also agree that Randi (whom I admire for the most part) will go
overboard with his "proving" that psyhic phenomenon doesn't
exist. He says that he is trying to arrive at the truth, but he
really bends over backwards to find ANY possible explanation.
i.e. not Occam's razor, but using a given that psychic phenomenon
does not exist.
On the third hand, Geller has been CAUGHT cheating. This
destroys, in my mind at least, the possibility that the man is
legitimate.
Enjoy!

Re: DO MEN OR WOMEN?

It is interesting that "paranormal bashing" seems to be something that
"scientists" do whenever they have nothing else to do - i.e., whenever
their NSF check is a bit slow. In addition to Randi's org., there are
a host of others, including the "Committee for the Scientific
Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal." It is chaired by Paul
Kurtz (Professor of Philosophy, SUNY-Buffalo) and the "Fellows of the
Committee" include Isaac Asimov, L. Sprague de Camp, Martin Gardner,
Douglas S. Hofstadter, David Marks, Carl Sagan and a host of others.
It is obvious from their literature that they too "bend over backward"
to make sure that no claim goes undisputed.

I think Randi goes so far that people get tired of listening to
him. It is like the citizens group in Long Beach that went to
every public hearing, etc. and screamed and hollered trying to
keep us from starting our business. One time, after a year or
so of this stuff I was briefly chatting with the Mayor and he
said "those kinds come to every meeting, scream and complain
about everything anybody wants to do... so we just tune them out.
If they came in with legit complaints ONCE IN A WHILE they would
probably get some where... but the way they lean on us day in and
day out they could have a real complaint, but nobody listens!"

Re: DO MEN OR WOMEN?

One Geller example was at Stanford Research (NOT AFFILIATED WITH
THE UNIVERSITY... WHICH MOST PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE)... They built
a steel walled cubicle that was supposed to be sealed up tight.
No way in, no way out... Locked him init and he was able to figure
out stuff they were doing.
.
A friend of mine checked the place out and they did not have it
finished in time... THEY DIDN'T TELL THAT IN THE REPORT... but
what was NOT FINISHED was the air venting... THEY HAD LEFT ABOUT
A ONE BY TWO FOOT OPENING IN IT... didn't bother to seal it or
nothing... Figured GELLER COULD BE TRUSTED and since he was a
real psychic he wouldn't need to cheat????? Har har har...
.
My friend was an undercover U.S. Govt. dude checking him out on
the Q.T. he even had Geller do some private seances and reading
for him.... Argh....
.
Another friend, in NY, now Financial Editor of Business Week
Magazine... when I told him about Geller and Andrija Puharick (sp?)
nearly fell over... he told me he used to Date Puharick's daughter
and the old man was a nutcase... that actually believed he had
visitors from flying saucers all the time. TRUE...
.
In one of Geller's books he talked about walking along a street
in Manhattan, N.Y. City.... and leaping in the air and landing
almost 100 miles away on Puharick's front porch in Ossening, N.Y.
.
Puharick backed up the story, saying something like, "Yes, Yuri
came flying through my screen door!"
.,
Hey.... he's got the job!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: FAVORITE EFFECT

Ee;28341
I had responded to Tabman's question as 'What is your favorite effect
and why'. I meant the FAVORITE effect that YOU personally do.
.
Each of us has, I'm sure, one effect that they like better than any
other they do. I think it would be interesting to get some insight
on what effects each person likes and WHY (some detail would be good)
they like that particuliar effect.
.
My personal favorite is cut and restored rope. I use a modified
Slydini routine as a psuedo hynosis (I hypnotize the rope and perform
psycho-surgery on it). There are two cuts and restorations in my vers
ion.
.
The reason I like it is that is plays well in close-up, walk-around,
and parlour and I always get a good response from it. I can use the
same rope several times (it just gets a bit shorter each time), it
packs small and plays big. I don't need a table, can do it surrounded
and its an ordinary object that everyone can relate too, plus there
are no gaffs to deal with - its straight skill and presentation. Very
pure magic.
.
Hope to hear what effects other people like and WHY !
.
Bizarre.

Holy bat, birdman. Sounds like you've been having a different sort
of time. Sorry to hear about alla bad news from your end. The
Chinese have a definition of calamity that I like: "Opportunity
riding an ill wind." It works for me so some good stuff must be
around the corner. UPS, hmmmmm. I hope you aren't sending me the
deceased bird back.

Re: FISM SHOW

Great news from the Tonman and Japan. I know you've been stretching
for a closer for the shows and sounds like you might have found it.
Am really looking forward to the SLC-IBM. Doc called me yesterday
and is wanting to rap about his shows/lectures. Nashville is
shaping up too, so looks like things is happening!

In the top ten figures last year, if I recall, Copperfield was in
the top ten grossers for non musical acts three times with single
show grosses in the mid six figures.

I almost bought the Klause book last night but haven't so far. Maybe
will wait til 2nd printing and hope they get the photo screening
right. Am on my way to Music Valley Drive in a bit. Beverly (girl
singer I manage) is doing a big saturday night radio broadcast out
of Kentucky tonight and a bunch of us are riding up to the venue
on Jerry Reed's bus. Lots of peroxide and boufount. Yopwsuh!!

Re: FAVORITE EFFECT

Last night at a close up jam I tried one of my favorite tricks
impromptu - PARALLAX - and it really works well this way. Instead
of cutting the stuff out with an Xacto I tore and folded a poker
sized playing card and it works like a charm. I told them the
history of the effect also and where it came from also going into
some variations of _Into The 4th Dimension_Card Warp, etc. Last'
night, PARALLAX was my favorite as it really got their attention
doing it impromptu.

Re: "TABBY SOUND"

Will do Jerry. Hang onto reservation until I make one. They send
specials out in the mail about every six weeks and current one
goes through Feb. Next mailing should have special roller rates
for March. Appreciate the NO SMOKIN deal. I'm still weak and would
be tempted to puff on one of your Carlton's if they was laying
around the room and there was smoke hanging in the air. Maybe I
will come in on Wednesday also. Wooden mind looking around at the
land - .

As far as I know, Daryl bought the "Leather Impact" from the
afore named dealer at FFFF this past year and was dissapointed that
NO CREDIT was given. He expressed his views to the dealer and there
was to have been a change, though don't know if it happened!!!

Yeh, rope is good magic. I still run into people that say, "Gee,
I remember you cut that string we had and put it back together".
.
Usually someone about 30 that I did the trick for at their home
when they were 12 years old! visiting their parents. I used to
always ask them if they had a couple of feet of string and a
scissors and an old beat up deck of cards... IF THEY ASKED FOR A
BIT OF MOJO...

I don't think Urin Geller used to call himself "an entertainer" and
have not PERSONALLY heard that he does. (OK, its a dumb line in
this context... "Urin Geller"... but I use that pronunciation in
a set up for a gag mental effect in my comedy act... I say something
like.... "Well, lets do a little mental exercise... something like
you see on TV by famed psychic Urin Geller or Amazing Kreskin...
you know I found out... Amazing IS HIS REAL NAME.... " etc. ad lib,
ad nauseum... ad ARgh....

Re: ROGER KLAUSE IN CONCERT

Robert F. Jones (Sports Illustrated motorsports riter years back
when he and I were doing stories together) had a couple of great
lines in story we did in the South at a stock car race... One had
something to do with the fine chips of hair spray being blown around
in the wind cutting your face... one I gave him was "pick up trucks
around the parking lot had Electric Toilet Paper displayed on the
dash.... electric toilet paper... a corn cob with an extention cord
stuck in the end..." (We used to sell those at a magic shop I worked
at).
