I bet there are collectors of rude stuff from WWII, remember the
Japanazi stuff, Heil Pffft, Heil Pffft, right in the Fuhrer's Face,

US flier that crashed in jungle... he came to an opening and he
ran into a Japanese girl... he ripped open his shirt and showed
her an American flag tatood on his chest... and shouted "American",
she ripped open her blouse and said, "Niponese"... ARgh??

doing a waterless, messless, rice bowls... Nahman Nissen, a fine

sort of a country Herb Shriner, Will Rogers kinda act...
.
Somewhere (now these I got to find) I have another variant of the
rice bowls... the Himber Coffee cups... put coffee beans in one
cup, put cups together the beans double in quantity, put them

Re: FAVORITE EFFECT
I love the Edward Victor Bat Trick (taught to me by English magic
Alan Alan) because you can do it one on one... it is very small
to carry and I have even tied it in for Trade Show use with chatter
about the different "lines"... I sure wish Muhammad Ali hadn't
KEPT my best one tho.... did it for him, blew him away and he said,
"I want that stick"... took it out of my hands put into his pocket
and wouldn't give it back to me. One guy at the party said, "Hey
that's great... the last guy he took something from got a gift
from him a week later... a new Cadillac.... I am still waiting for
my gift! Do you think after three years he forgot? Do you think
when he got home he remembered what that stupid little black paddle
in his pocket was for? NO....
.
Since then I have quit liking prize fighters. Altho Foremen has
nibbled his way back into favor....

Re: EFFECTS
Ee;28456
People that watch like some of the effects I do because they are
VERY direct, take no effort to understand the effect and can have
a laff with them...
.
To mind, comes... Card on the Forehead. Copper/Silver (Silver Dollar
and real penny version) in their hands. Victor Bat Trick because
of interaction of patter, asking spectator to keep track of the
lines. Card out of fly (unzip and produce card) -- I quit loading
wallets with envelopes as the EFFECT on people was more ENTERTAINING
just palming it off and bringing it out of my fly...
.
For real people in a party, table kinda environment... I guess the
kind of magic that is done behind the bar works best. I spent
countless hours studying the stuff Frank Shields used, and whenever
I could caught Johnny Paul, Heba Haba Al, etc. They did the most
direct stuff and REALLY UNDERSTOOD what people got a Kick out of!
.
HERE IS A NEW QUESTION.....
.
What effect DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO?
.
And when I say COULD DO... I mean well enough to be a baffler
and/or a great piece of entertianment?
.
The one I want to do BADLY is the Linking Finger Rings... just
never get the nerve up to bring it into play...
.
That will be my New Years Resolution... start to carry the ring and
get with it!!!!!!!!!!
.
Lets here some answers!!!!

Re: FAVORITE EFFECT
There were two effects we did in the old Midnight Spook shows that
blew the audiences away. One was the floating table (with 2 spec-
tators up helping) and the other was a stupid, stupid simple
rope tie escape. I mean you ALL have seen this in the dumb, cheap
books of magic aimed at laymen... and like me HAVE PROBLABLY
DISMISSED IT.... But when Arthur Bull (Francisco) did it it killed.
.
What? You ask? OK... it is the dumb trick where you have a handker-
chief TIED around your wrists. You then have about a 30 foot rope
looped thru your arms. The spectator holds the ends, about 15 feet
away from you. It looks impossible to get out. You wave the old
hands up and down and in a flash... the rope drops to the floor
and you are free and the handkerchief is still securely tied
around your wrists. This fooled the wiz out of the spectators
and they would grab the rope look it over and check his hands,
etc. etc... strong magic the way he presented such a simple item.

If I can accurately recall Max's show, he did not claim to have psychic
abilities nor did he make a disclaimer about what we were about to see
being merely entertainment. He just did his act and let everyone draw
their own conclusions. From the conversations I overheard there were
many different conclusions drawn. Some saying they didn't know how he
did a certain trick as if it were another magic trick or puzzle that
they couldn't figure out. A few others who could not come up with any
logical solutions were certain that Max possessed psychic abilities.

Re: URI GELLER
Perhaps Geller does have some psychic ability. I have never seen one
of his performances and all I have heard is that he bends spoons and
starts and stops time pieces. If Geller really does have psychic
abilities and assuming he cares to prove it he should try doing things
that can't be duplicted by a magician. For instance, if he says he can
tell the future then have him write down the headlines for tomorrow or
next week and make those predictions known before the papers hit the
newstand. If he claims he can read minds then have someone think of a
card or whatever and tell that person what they are thinking. Just
about any effect you can think of can be closely approximated by a
magician but it would be tough to fool any good magician who sets up
the experiment for Geller.

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N.4
I looked again at the messages and don't know that I can make it any
clearer -- it is one thing to offend people out of ignorance and/or
callousness -- but within an artistic presentation you are going to
offend some people who may not like the premises. There are, for
example, born again Christians who think mentalism -- and often magic
-- are the work of the devil. I do not choose to recognize their
feelings as something to influence my work. If, on the other hand, I
refer to them in my act as those red neck cross burner types as a basic
description, I am being insensitive, not to say stupid. A person's
religious belief is one thing, and whether it influences what I do;
being insensitive about that belief out of sheer stupidity is quite
another. Any clearer?

Don't know whether Max has pointed this out yet -- but in the
performances of his I have seen (seances excepted) he makes very few

spectator stop on a predicted card, that is EXACTLY what he does; ain't

Re: NEW WAY
E
ALL
NEW VERSION...
Ee;28364
Just thought of a couple of things... one new way to do a great
effect. Years ago Ken Brooke marketed "Potty Prediction". In
Brit parlance Potty means "a bit off... crazy..." -- so... here
is a variation (Billy McComb marketed the "McComical Deck")...
.
Anyway reason for this idea was for SIZE... And was reminded of
the prop because of last nights fone call from Ton Onasaka in Japan.
Onasak-san markets a beautiful set of cards for the "Find the Lady"
a mechanical super gigantic set of cards that can be shows as
either a Jack of Spades or Queen of Hearts. It is an old principle,
the sliding piece within the card. I have a similar set from Abbotts
and another from Pat Page that he used to assemble by hand.
.
Anyway... if you don't do the routine and have the cards, this only
requires ONE of them. (hey you can sell the other two to two others
that like this version).
.
You also need a jumbo deck of about 10-15 pairs that are rough
and smoothed. They are all identical pairs: Each roughed pair
shows either the Jack or the Queen on the face with the opposite
card hidden to the back.
.
You now begin the routine by saying you have a huge card here, huge
because A) you want everyone to see it... and B) it would be
impossible for me to switch it for another card.
(for this example we will start with the Queen showing)
.
Oh, yes... you have a spectator up to help you.
.
Start by showing the Jumbo Queen to the audience, but do not let
your helper see it... You can place this card leaning against
helper's leg (but after you show it you turn back to audience and
in setting it down turn it over and it changes to the Jack).
.
Pick up the regular Jumbo sized deck... spread it, winking to the
audience.. saying your friend here will have a FREE CHOICE... the
audience sees ALL QUEENS....
.
You ask helper to stop on any card... etc... and you hand him the
card of HIS/HER FREE CHOICE... saying... "don't let the audience
see it..."
.
Now recap the situation...
.
Pick up the Giant card... ask the spectator to name the card in
possession... WHEN THE JACK IS NAMED the audience thinks you have
blown it...
.
Here you need to experience the trick in real time conditions to
learn the timing... how long to wait, how much to mug... look
worried, etc. NOT LONG... don't drag it out...
.
Then you grab the card, look at it and turn both around at the
same time holding them both up high in each hand... AN AUTOMATIC
APPLAUSE CUE POSITION...
.
Saying, "That's what I thought you said...."

OK, all of you out there that are planning to do some good magic
at a military hospital, veterans home, children's hospital, or a
nursing home... whatever... for the Holidays....
.
DO NOT DO IT... I REPEAT... DO NOT DO IT...
.
Right now there are hundreds of acts and shows doing it... singing
nuns, Tap dancing Jugglers, Accordian soloists, Magicians, Clowns,
thumb tip and ballon workers... six shows a day are trouping thru
those places.
.
WAIT... BECAUSE??? The rest of the 11 months NOBODY CARES. NOBODY
COMES TO SING OR PLAY... OR VISIT.
.

do it then.... 'nuff sed... (just speakin' from experience).

Re: THREAD VIDEOS
Thanks for your response Pete. I really wasn't looking for a
recommendation of the specific effects of either "The Rose" or the
"Bill", but rather which Video covered a more generalized handling of
Thread Work. In terms of the effects themselves, I would guess "The
Floating Bill" would be the one you could perform with more ease, less
preparation, and repeat more often. I did receive "The String Book" by
Ralf
Wichmann,(BRACO) from The House of Magic. He primarily focuses on
Balls, Cigarettes, and corks and details Suspension, Flotation, Contact
support, and Animation, as they relate to Close-up and stage. You
mentioned Finn Jon and Braco books....do you have any more titles?
Have you seen Ammar's Video? Burt Carpenter asked me to comment on the
"The String Book" as he is very interested in thread work, which I must
do.

Re: BOOK TITLE
The Book I obtained from House of Magic is titled "The String Book",
sub title...Floating Routines for Table and Stage. The author is Ralf
Wichman, stage name Braco. The book is soft cover and 82 pages. He
details the four basic effects of Suspension, Flotation, Contact
Support, and Animation and gets into methods with wire and thread,
rods, magnetic fields, electronics, sticky tapes, magnets and
weights. He describes the mechanics of several routines without getting
into presentation, leaving that to the individual. I think the cost was
$12.50, and well worth it.
Burt, did you see my posted query seeking comments on Ammar's Video and
Kevin James Video? Have you seen either and do you have any comments?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, T A, but it does sound like you are
saying that it is important for a performer to not be unintentionally
stupid - that the performer has an obligation to be aware of what may
offend some - but that if the performer chooses to be intentionally
stupid, then that is OK. It still seems to me that this connects to
the previous discussion in which I believe you stated that the
performer has no social responsibility connected with his performance.

there were others in the room... and was distracted.
.
But... you can adapt the BRACO work to float ANYTHING... Bills,
Checks, notes from your mom... argh...
.
Why not forget what others have done and work up your own kinda
stuff... float something that ties in to what you feel and use...
.
You can do all the bill stuff with the loop, from Finn... Joe
Stevens sells that stuff.... Finn's thread magic book is a killer.
.
The best stuff, tho, is what you come up with.
.
The Rose, I would guess, really would only cover the one trick and
not be a "workup" of methods, etc.
.
You want to revive a Killer? Order the Floating and Dancing Cork
of Fred Kaps from Stevens.
.
Daniel Cros has a very nice variation using a little "real" seahorse
that I think is a GREAT item to float...it has a built in, natural,
hook!!! It is light in weight and can be cool dancing on the out
stretched hand of a lay person (a lady)... is elegant and fits
many social situations...
.
The biggest problem, as I see it, there are too many dudes all
doing the same stuff... they see it and they want to do it...
.
Try to be the guy others see and want to copy...
.
Don't stop thinking too soon.

Re: DO MEN OR WOMEN?
I believe, that these scientists believe in what they are doing.
Just because one is a scientist, does not in any way guarentee
that they will follow the scientific method. This is as true for
those studying psychic phenonmenon as those trying to disprove
it.
I have a book called "The Probability of the Impossible" by Dr.
Thelma Moss (who used to be associated with U.C.L.A.) that has
some very large leaps of logic.
On the other hand, I've built and operated Kirlian photography
machines, and have personally achieved the "Phantom Leaf" effect.
So Randi's explanation is, to me, unbelievable.
CSICOP is an interesting organization and their magazine "The
Skeptical Inquirer" is an interesting magazine. I just wish that
their incredible bias against claims of the paranormal was not so
strong as to affect their reporting of a subject.
In this, as in religion, I am an agnostic. I just don't know.

No, David, that is not what I am saying at all; stupid performers are
not a luxury magic or any other art can afford. I am saying that a
performer may choose, for artistic reasons, to do things which may
offend some part of his audience and -- while realizing that may happen
-- feel the artistic point to be made is worth alienating a segment
which may not like it. This is a very different thing from the
performer who alienates people through insensitivity and stupidity.

Yes, it is the apparent bias in stuff like CSICOP does that bothers me.
Anytime someone has to overreact to make a point or has to dismiss the

being fearful and shallow. I simply can't understand why a group of
"scientists" would be so afraid of the possibility of "paranormal"

Once you have selected the ones you want (or have decided to keep

differences you will see are a section name next to a message number

Re: CHARLIE MILLER
I was not too happy with the recent mention of my tape in the
magazine, MAGIC, Mike Weber did not have the facts correct. It is
a shame that this magazine allows reporters to do a story without
even calling me. I talked to Weber and he agreed with me. This is
called sensationalism, and totally unnecessary. I have sold this
tape to magic dealers, magicians and others without Charlie Miller
being the "point of sale purpose", or even mentioned.
From Weber's comments he tries to say I breached a secret
confidence with Charlie. This is a joke! If you follow this type
of thinking this means that if Charlie showed you any point about
any effect or gambling sleight, you could never talk about it or
use it. Well, him showing me the cigar box holder for the sand
paper is all we are talking about....and I thought it very
practical. And if I were stealing from him, or anyone else, why
did I mention his name. Totally absurd and I wish Charlie Miller,
Charlie Miller, Charlie Miller was here to tell them to F.O., but
he would not say it in that manner. He would simply say, "Ask me
what I think about this", and he would not utter a single
word.....I will probably get flack for revealing this secret too.
Pretty much anymore in the MAGAZINE magic, you can't miss-spell
one word, or an atomic bomb will be dropped.
And you know one more thing Charlie told me......"these so called
experts can't earn a quarter doing these things"....well said
Charlie.........
....next episode......I will tell a little more about Charlie and
our escapades........Charlie stayed in my home for a short time,
lived in the hotels, notice I said hotels, were I worked, and spent
time with me as a friend. I must note that Johnny and Pam Thompson
were the closest to Charlie, where Charlie spent most of the time
in their home. He did however have a very wealthy Lady friend at
the beach that adored him.
Charlie really liked Johnny and Pam. In fact Thompson, Jim Houston
and Paul Endy were the only people Charlie talked about with
me.......

To The Editor and Michael Weber
MAGIC

FAX 213-408-2588
Dear Gentlemen:
I appreciate your reviews of products, especially mine, but
please get your facts correct, because as a lawyer you should be
more conscious of these details.
In reference to my "stripper" video you say, "In the ads and on
the tape, Geno explains that the method he is teaching was revealed
to him by Charlie Miller." Not exactly, the stripper deck has been
around awhile and the method of sanding and cutting with glass goes
back farther than Charlie Miller, and I in fact learned the method
the first time from a gambler by the name of Sam Lorefel, from
Detroit. The only real difference here is the way Charlie showed
me how to use cigar box pieces to hold the sandpaper. I put my
first work on the stripper in a book called, "The Magic of Jimmy
Grippo", in 1981. Also you will find my work on marking the
cards on the faces here, some so-called experts call this black
line work.
(I mention this in reference to Mr. Malek-Sadigh's letter.) The
secret of sanding is pretty common. And besides, this is a
gambling secret, not a magic secret, and how did you know what
dialogue Charlie and I transpired?
I first met Charlie in the gambling world, in Las Vegas, long
before I knew him as a magician. We have many of the same friends.
Charlie once worked in the same hotel I worked in as an "eye in the
sky". We had many things in common from this.
I paid Charlie to do "outside work" for me, he lived with me for
short periods of times in my house, and hotels were I worked.
Also Mike, I did place one advertisement in LINKING RING almost
five months before the tape was even produced, and have never
advertised any reference to Charlie Miller about the video since
this. His name is mentioned in the video because I am revealing
his favorite method of using sandpaper. In true honesty he can't
be given credit for inventing the stripper deck, whether it be the
belly, wedge or side, or whatever. I have the deepest admiration
and respect for Charlie Miller, but I did not produce the video on
the strength or reputation that Charlie had.
You are quick to be critical without investigating all of the
facts. Why don't you make a few phone calls, as any responsible
reporter would do before you decide to publish inaccuracies.
And one more thing.....Charlie did discuss many other gambling
ideas with me, that he did not invent. We even talked about
putting them in a book..
You have portrayed my work in an unfavorable light and the damage
has been done without my side of the story. Not good!
Sincerely
Geno Munari

understand my point completely. If he has real psychic powers he
wouldn't care about little sniping people trying to distract him or

Pete, I can assure you from conversations I have had with friends and
acquaintances that not everyone who sees a performer at the Ice House
or the Magic Castle thinks it is all show biz- when it comes to
mentalism. I have never heard anyone say they thought a magician who
did coins across or cups and balls had paranormal powers but I have had
several people swear to me that the mentalism act they just witnessed
was a performance of true psychic powers. I find their belief to be
truly incredible even after I have assured them that it was all done by
less than paranormal means and like our sysop said, even after
duplicating the same trick that they found to be such fantastic "proof"
of the mentalists abilities. After Max's show I heard some people
talking about how there was no way he could have done some of his
effects by mere trickery, he MUST have psychic powers!
Max, if you're reading this have you ever considered starting your own
religion? You already have some wide eyed believers out there!

Well Max, the existence of a wig on someones head pretty much points
out the lack of hair on that same head. I'm sure you have seen some of
Geller's performances. Do you think he has any paranormal abilities
and if so which ones? All I know of him is what I read in the latest
edition of M A G I C and as far as I can tell he is at least a pretty
good showman. Anything else?

I have no problem with any investigator that keeps an open mind. What
I do object to, in any field, is the "investigator" who arrives with
pre-conceived notions and works to "prove" them. Unfortunately, too
much of the "scientific" investigaton is conducted that way. I've just
never understood why these guys have such an axe to grind. You would
think that the first one to publish a documented account of actually
paranormal experience (assuming such might exist) would win heaps of
praise - NOPE. He would be drummed out of the scientific community,
assuming he (or she) could get their work published at all.

Re: URI GELLER
Tommy,
OUR FIRST CORRESPONDENCE! How wonderful!
Again, I must point out that I did not say I could duplicate
Geller's every stunt. I said that I had yet to see one of his
effects that I couldn't duplicate. Big difference.
I guess, since I am in the middle of all this controversy, and I
have not read the Magic article, that I should go ahead and
commit here and say that I believe Geller to be a fake.
So that I don't have to answer letters clarifying, let me repeat
*I believe* Geller is a fake.
It seems a little incongruous that a man who claims to be able to
jump many miles has to struggle so hard to get a compass needle
to point a different direction. Yet, if one were trying an
illusion, one would fake the strain so that no one would notice
the magnet in one's shoe under the table.
It seems unlikely to me, that there would be such a monumental
difference in mental strength from one "stunt" to the next in the
same person.
And frankly, all Geller would ever have to do to shut Randi up
once and for all would be to pass one of Randi's tests. This
would cause great embarrassment to Randi, and secure Geller's
claims forever.
No, Geller is not obligated to prove himself to anyone. The only
problem is, that Geller is making claims, to the public, that,
(wow, look at all the commas) so far, have yet to be
substantiated.
Yes, Geller did take the world by storm. I have not. But did he
take the world by storm in the way Einstein did, or the way the
piltdown man did?

RE:Leather Impact; I Don't think it's quite that bad. The dealer

sheet. Tab mentions the FFFF incident. Maybe Howie didn't
anticipate the negative reactions of not including credit and
changed his writeup, I don't know. But I do know he now sells the
wallets with full credit and a writeup of the original Impact,
changing the words "envelopes" with the words "wallets" where
necessary.
As I've already lost his instruction sheet, I'm working out my

Re: URI GELLER
Okay, that's an answer, but no one expects the magician or mentalist or
any hybrid therein thereof to make their performance scrupulously
honest on all levels. Of course there has to be a certain level of
honesty, but when the magician says "these aces are going to transpose
with the three cards over there and join the ace of spades," he is
essentially lying. But, as a magician, there is an unspoken contract
between audience and magician that the magician will not, in fact, be
telling them how he _really_ did it. With a performer of mentalism
(proper terms escape me here), there is a different contract Max's
method is the cleanest one -- that is to make no special claims at all.
When I recently saw Kreskin on TV, he seemed to make many specific
claims, but I'd have to go back and re-look at that to say that with
anything approaching certainty... Anway, none of this is an attack on
the field or is a questioning of anyone's performing style or choices.
I'm curious on an academic and philisophic level as to very different
relationship between the audience and the magician, vs the audience and
mentalist.

Re: URI GELLER
No. The distinction I make is that in a non-skill gambling demo they
are showing something that CAN be done. For instance someone does a
demo where they apparently deal seconds or from the bottom or even the
middle of the deck. Well, there are some people who can do just that.
If the performer is good enough a knowing spectator such as yourself
may not be able to tell if it was the real thing or not.
Now in an all mentalism act when a person claims to have or at least
infers they have, paranormal powers they are all (to the best of my
limited knowledge) giving the APPARENCY of mind reading etc. As far as
I know no one actually does do these things.
If this distinction isn't fuzzy and muddled enough let me make it more
so. In an act that includes mentalism as a part of it such as
predicting a card someone would pick or whatever, I wouldn't make any
attempt to dissuade someone from thinking the performer couldn't do
that small bit of mentalism. I just assume that when most people see
a performer change a red silk to blue, pull stuff out of an empty box,
etc. that they know it was all done with cleverness, technique,
misdirection, or whatever their concept of it is- along with the bit of
mentalism. Is that confusing and contradictory enough?

You miss my point. You deal seconds but don't know the top card.
You false shuffle but you don't stack... there is no change in the
odds, or anything... you don't tell... you are just excercising
your PHYSICAL skills. Actually, in a Poker Game a single cut messes
the cards up more than a shuffle. Think about it. If someone has
four of a kind, a couple of shuffles might spread them out so that
the same customer gets them all. If you only cut, the four will
go, one to each player...

Due to allergies beyond my control, I find I must part with my favorite
bunny rabbit, "Buns", and his room mate, "Izzy Fuzzy" a rotund Guinea
Pig. I've used Buns in my children's shows for three years now, and
Buns is very tame. He's also rare, as dripping wet, he still weighs in
at under two pounds.
My doctor insists that if I want to continue breathing without
mechanical support, the two critters must go, so I'm tossing 'em up for
grabs.
FREE to good home. Bunny rabbit (white with very light charcoal dusted
ears and nose) and his faithful Guinea companion, Izzy. Will throw in
cage, food, and what's left of the kitty litter.

The latest version of RDMAGIC has sections installed for the E
function. Right now it defaults to sec 13, am waiting for what the
legal sections are. Everyone using RDMAGIC (AKA IMP!) should use the
E function when responding to a msg that they want directed to anothe
r section. I could add a function that would act like the R & A
function, but really creates an E type response with a default of
the RE portion to be the same as the msg you are responding to. Then
all you have to do is enter an appropriate section number and it
will be directed to that section. The From/To fields would be filled
just as the R & A functions are now (i.e. R responds to the person in
the From field and A responds to the person the to field).

One year I was doing my cut and restored rope with a brand new pair

bleeding all over the place - the kids thought it was part of the act

Re: FAVORITE EFFECT
The E. V. Bat trick is an effect with a miniature English Cricket
Bat... much like a paddle routine, only you start with a plain,
black, blank paddle and make marks on same with a chalk... the
lines jump, etc. vanish, re-appear, etc.
.
I have done this probably 28,000 times. I had Les Smith, of Owen
Magic make a couple of them for me... just because I thought it
was cool to have an "Owen" mark... I broke one and Ali stole the
other... the RAT!!!
.
What I use now I carved from a piece of a paint stirring stick and
sprayed it with Black Chalkboard Paint.
.
The Patter and Routine took me 10 years to develop... and I will
break anybody's arms that nicks it!!! (not the trick, the patter
and presentation). It is sold by Magic Inc., in Chi town...

I used to do a ton of them... the military hospitals during the
Korean war, etc... some nursing homes... and salvation army stuff.
but have not lately, as I have temporarily stopped performing for
producing and writing... will start again, tho...
.
I once asked a sailor to come up and help me. Was going into the
cut/rest rope... and HE HAD NO HANDS... so, "quicker thinking
when I was a mere lad..." I said, "OK, we use the buddy system."
Pointed to the guy that was sitting next to him and motioned him
up... had the guy without hands DIRECT his buddy... got lots out
of it... and later the guy THANKED me for using him and treating
him straight...

People spend their money pretty much the way they want to anyway. Some
folks travel, some play tennis, some buy lottery tickets (gambling is
a vice so immoral that only the state is allowed to engage in it) and
some have their palm read. If they don't do the above, the government
takes it anyway - and - guess what - spends it on psychic research!

I certainly agree pretty much with your judgements, but that isn't
precisely what we are muddling about with here. It is more that an
artist does things within a presentation BY INTENTION; he or she may
offend, but they are aware of this possibility -- unlike the person who
(for example) talks about Chink Cans and such with no thought of being
offensive, simply out of insensitivity, or lack of awareness.

Because of the abundance of messages on MAGIC!, I tend
to read them rapidly, in a kind of flying skim mode,
pausing only on items of special interest, and seldom
reading anything very carefully. As a result, I fell
for your message to Tabby re the special Malini issue
of GENII like a ton of bricks. Without going back to
the message itself, I waited all week for the copy to
arrive, and, when it didn't, assumed I was one of those
left out. I called Dante this morning to bribe him to
send me one of the withheld issues. It wasn't until
after I got off the phone that I realized I had been
had. But -- Dante loved the concept, says to keep the
rumors going. If anyone wants a copy of the top secret
Lance Burton issue, send him money.

I'm on Pete's side, I think. The original manuscript of the
$100.00 bill switch included near the end the author's pet
handling which is _without_ a thumb tip. My friend, the late Dave
Roemer of Baltimore, tipped me the bare-hand method after
watching him do it many times for laymen. In this method the bill
does _not_ leave the view of the spectators.
.
I did this version for a friend who was raving about the Ammar
method of handling the thumbtip, and had spent some time
mastering it. He concluded that the bare-hand method was as good.
.
In IBM in Baltimore I did it for Carney and some others to see if
the bill left their view. I believe the conclusion was that the
bill didn't leave their sight.

anything I lean towards the idea that it may occur. I simply haven't
seen any performer or entertainer who I think was doing the "real

Re: FAVORITE EFFECTS
I've been trying to think of what my favorite effect is that I can do
and I've found that I don't have a particular favorite. What I DO like
is whatever gets the best response from a particular audience. If I am
doing something for a lady I get a good response from a flip stick or
hot rod. Pointing out all of those jewels and how they all change to
her selection- that's always good. But I wouldn't bother to show it to
one or more guys. My presentation on it wouldn't go over too well.
But a poker demo might be just the thing- if they are card players. If
not, then a quick coin flurry like David Roth does where a coin quickly
appears and disappears a half a dozen times might certainly open their
eyes. Even kids like that but if I'm on stage none of these would be
my favorite, I'd probably go for a cut and restored rope routine I
learned from Ultra Cervon, or a prediction effect I get a lot of laughs
from. So my favorite effect changes depending on where I am and who
I'm with.
I think you also wanted to know what effect would I like to be able to
do or something of the sort. There are A LOT of things I'd like to
learn. I currently have a list of over a hundred items- sleights,
tricks and routines I want to learn. My side steal for instance. It's
only deceptive in total darkness! Lots to do, I better get to it...

I think Mike Caldwell's "Sun and Moon" (well cut, messed up and

As for the thumb tie. The late Shigeo Takagi taught me his handling,
and it is basically the Vernon one in the book. And also the other
guy that helped me was Maki Kitami (Takagi's same handling)... Maki
gave me a supply of the "good" cords.
.
Apparently it is the same as the original Ten Ichi... Jay Marshall
and I once went onstage (Hawaii, I think) when the elder TENYO did
the thumb tie (same method)... with Shimada translating.
.
It was AWESOME... When he did the move THRU THE SWORD... JAY AND I

then he yells at me, then I read Parallax again, etc. Didn't even know
there were trix!

Given that mine is a mentalism act you have seen, I must respond. While
I care not a whit if you think that paranormal events occur during my

1. The material you saw me perform is not composed of "tricks [you

2. The material you saw me perform is not "easy to duplicate just from
watching."

I am still confused -- if someone is faking a skill they do not

find it necessary to debunk the one and now the other -- since, if I

sleight skills do occur?

David,
Science is only as strong as the scientist. We (humans) have set
up systems to help us keep from fooling ourselves, but as someone
once said, man is not a rational animal, he is a rationalizing
animal.
When someone spends their whole life working on a project under
an assumed restriction, they will be less than thrilled with
chucking the whole thing.
There were many physicists who wouldn't buy Einstein no matter
how many experiments were done. The same goes very every major
advancement that changed previous theory.
Enjoy!

Re: SECONDS
Pete,
My big hangup in this area is violating a person's trust. If one
sits in at a poker game, there is an unspoken trust placed upon
one. This means that one is expected not to cheat or perform
other hideous acts of deception.
Yes, cheating is stealing, but it is also violating trust.

Max,
I have yet to have the pleasure of watching you perform, but I
must ask if you agree with what Stan was saying in essence. Just
because someone is able to move a compass needle, does not mean
that they are psychic. It is not proof that they are not
psychic, but if you can recognize the method it certainly leads
one to believe that they are not.
You obviously wouldn't enjoy the reputation that you do if you
took tricks off of cereal boxes.

Makes it kind of tough to publish when the foundation upon which you
have based your entire career suddenly changes. For every action
there is an equal (and sometimes greater) reaction. Any establishment
once created will try to close off outsiders to maintain its own
existence.
.
The micro-computer revolution was one of the first manifestaions of a
new kind of change that just happened and no one (not even IBM) could
control it. Hopefully this kind of freedom of information flow will
continue to permeate society. As a result BBS's are having a bigger
effect on society than most of any of us even realize.

That is of course if they manage to hide their rebellious nature
until the go through the osification process of getting their PhD.
I know several people that had to change schools because they
couldn't accept their mentor's positions on certain issues and
were unwilling to compromise their integrity.

The history of science is filled with examples of rebels against
'established' scientific dogma that were eventually vindicated,
Galileo is a prime example. Today the 'connectionists' or neural
network approach to AI is a good case in point.

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N.4
Does this mean that if a person uses something that is offensive to
a segment of the population, like Chink-cans, is to be chastized, but
if he/she does with INTENT that it is OK ? I think not.
.
I would agree that a person who is using offensive material and is
not aware of it, and is then told that it is offensive, but continues
to use it - with no artistic reason, should be severely chastized
with good reason. They are then doing it with malice a fore thought,
prior to being aware of it being offensive it was just plain stupidit
y.
.
Most males don't call woman 'broads' or 'chicks' any more, since they
have become aware that these terms are offensive to woman. I must
admit my own ignorance regarding Chink-a-chink (I thought it referred
to the sound of the coins), I know what a Chink-can is but didn't
associate ethnic significance to it. I've learned something !
