Re: SIDEBAR
It relates to the whole idea of what could possibly be the solution
to the puzzle presented. Obviously Nathan didn't believe a coin
could ACTUALLY penetrate a glass, so the only conclusion was that
there must be TWO COINS (I assume you didn't flash and let him SEE
both coins).
.
This is a basic problem with a lot of magic that is presented. If the
audience doesn't BUY what you are selling they automatically go to
the next most likely explanation - which doesn't even really have to
be the real method. An example, is Lance's levitaion - although
beautifully done - does anyone REALLY BELIEVE he ain't using a wire ?
Just because I don't SEE the wire doesn't make me believe there isn't
one. Same on DC's flying bit.
.
That's the basic difference between straight magic and psychic
phenomena as well. Most mental things have one of two explanations -
trickery and deceit or true psychic ability - how can we be sure
which is which. Some of Max's stuff is so believable - I could go
either way. I finally gave trying to figure it out - just lean back
and enjoy !

While it is quite true that "just because someone is able to move a
compass needle [it] does not mean that they are psychic," it is also
true that just because you know a way of moving a compass needle by
trickery it does not mean that that's what they were doing.
Your comment about "recognizing the method" is, I feel, somewhat
questionable. There is a big difference between hypothesizing a method
and recognizing one.
I have never learned any material off of the back of cereal boxes;
neither has Uri Geller.

But that's the whole point. Let's take Andrew Dice Clay as an example,
as it's pretty clear that there is no one on this BBS who likes his
work. I certainly don't. However, I have far more respect for him than
I do for someone who is unaware of the offensive nature of his/her
material. Clay is decidedly unpleasant, but I'll give him credit for
knowing what he is doing; he is willfully, knowingly offensive, and
I'll take that any day over much of the other ignorant crap I
encounter.

Yes, indeed, the personal computer has made a profound change in our
society. And I think that communications is the most important part of
it. Ours is one system in about 30,000 in the U.S. that bring people
with special interests together. There are now BBS's all over the
World. They have brought people together in ways that weren't possible
before.

Re: SIDEBAR
It was interesting to discover that he was savy enough to make the
decision you suggested - really did take me by surprise. Frankly, I'm
not sure of his view of magic - for example, I think he knows that
Copperfield can't actually fly, but I'm not sure. On the other hand,
he loves the salt shaker thru table, even though I think he knows how
it is done - he just doesn't let on that he does.
I find that I really don't care how either Copperfield or Maven do
their stuff. I don't view either one as a puzzle to be solved, just
like you said. I would much rather suspend my disbelief and enjoy what
they do.

There are a lot of good tricks on the backs of cereal boxes! And I'm
convinced that Max could do them and astound an audience with them,
should he wish to do so. Max has considerable talent which he has
coupled with hard work.
The art is not the cleverness of the trick, the art is the performance.
"Squirmly" is nothing, but you should see Tommy Wonder do it!
[Note: None of the above is intended to convey the impression that
Max's performance is acomplished by any particular means that might be
related to standard magical techniques].

Re: SECONDS
Fiddling with cards in a game is neither cheating or violating any
trust. So... here is what you do. You do a legit shuffle. Then you
do a couple of Zarrow shuffles paying little attention to the cards
and hope by "managment" of the players they are talking or someone
is going to the john... getting another beer, whatever...
If you deal around dealing seconds, and the deck is shuffled
and you don't DO ANYTHING with it... who is to say that the order
isn't what it WOULD BE with, say, one more shuffle, or a different
depth to the cut?
False cut. Try the Klondike cut everytime you cut. If you do
it PSEUDO ( a real cut ) in the same manner as the false... it is
good training for you to get it down when you do it in magic.
There is nothing wrong with doing a false cut in a game. After
all... every once in awhile when someong is asked to cut... they
just tap the deck (meaning go ahead and deal NO CUt)... So a false
cut is your way of saying NO CUT, without verbalizing it...)
But, if you don't want to have fun in that manner it is ok. You
don't need to do it all the time.
I remember once in the Army, the guys always had craps games
going and card games. So I practiced some dice work and started to
use... I felt so guilty in about 20 minutes I quit playing around
and NEVER shot craps with anyone again.
The card games got to be TOO BIG MONEY for my interest and I
didn't want to play with the guys as their attitude was not of fun.
I did play TONS of Kitchen Poker when I lived in Hermosa Beach.
One time I LEGITIMATELY GOT AN ACE HIGH ROYAL FLUSH... and I could
not keep a straight face.... everyone folded EL QUICKLY.... ARGH...

Re: SIDEBAR
NATHAN has helped to create a WHOLE NEW ROUTINE for me... His line
"Two Coins" inspired me to do a coin penetration variation on the
great routine of Giovanni (which I guess NO ONE ELSE HERE has seen
or THEY TOO would be raving about it) in the current MAGIC mag.
I have the gaffed coin held UNDER the Chinese Coin (no ethnic
slurs in this routine) put the standard coin on top, showing it
will NOT fit thru the hole. I then cover it with a flat hand,
feign pushing down hard and the gaffed coin is allowed to drop to
the table top... and I say, "The coin went thru the hole"... I
raise the hand and the coin is still there on top... I say....
"OOOOps.... you caught me.... yep, I used 2 coins... you weren't
supposed to see this one... heh, heh..." I toss it aside.
"Yeh, I'm not a real magician... I have to use 2 coins.... BUT
IF I WAS REAL LIKE URI GELLER.... I would just do this... (I pick
up the gaffed coin place it on the Chinese Coin and VISUALLY
PUSH IT THRU THE HOLE).
This eliminates any palm change switches, subtle moves, etc.
There is more to my routine... but at this point it is evolving
and I don't want to explain it until it is right.

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N.4
Yeh, Clay is doing a parody of all the "macho street dudes" and
their IS an audience for him... look at the numbers he is grossing
in concerts...
.
Just like a prior generation buying Don Rickles. At least with
Rickles he gives all EQUAL "bad treatment"... and people in his
audiences "hope" he targets THEM... they don't want to fell left
out....
.
But again, like ANY performance, it is all Attitude and Perception.
.
Changing the subject: On PBS up here they have been running the
Tina Turnery Concert from Spain... WOW... WOW... WOW... boy, could
a magic act take some lessons here... One of the greatest performers
I have witnessed... She has a huge articulated crane UNDER the
stage... only thing visible for most of show is a small (4 foot
dia) platform at front center jutting out and just below stage.
Near end of show she moves out onto that little stage and all of
a sudden the arm moves out, and extends... she winds up about
sixty feet out and 20 feet over the heads of the audience... she
hangs ten, (must scare the crap out of her insurance co!!!!) and
sings material that gets the Jillion on hand into FEVER PITCH...
U N B E L I E V A B L E . . . .
.
I don't recall EVER seeing anyone (Bette Midler, maybe) that has
the energy/power onstage. Even on the little six foot video screen
here it was awesome...
.
Her entrance was no less great... A huge stairway (like the typical
Vegas backdrop stairway)... not visible at the beginning slowly
decends, like an arriving space ship... from above... The money
they spent to 'BUILD' the stage system must have been incredible.
But it all adds to the POWER, all adds to the PERCEPTION that they
are seeing something special.

I actually enjoy some of Andrew Dice Clay's material. Particularly the
early stuff. And if you've listened to it (and most people who find
him shocking have not), he does do what Rickles does, and attack all
groups with equal venom. My problem with the Diceman is not that he
offends, as this can be very funny and socially useful as well, but
that you have to wade through an inordinate amount of truly unfunny
stuff to get to the few belly laughs. You either like shock humor or

Re: TRAINS, PLANES....
Well, I've had this information for almost a week now, but I keep
forgetting to post it. I think senility is creeping in, but if
it is, don't tell me. I don't want to know.
The cost, per ticket, of a train round trip from L.A. to Salt
Lake city is $164 per seat, or $189 per seat or $230 per seat.
The cost, per ticket, or a train round trip from L.A. to Las
Vegas to Salt Lake city and back is $189 per seat or $246 per
seat.
The availability (how early reservations are made) is what
determines the different money amounts.
In order to get a private car, we would have to purchase 68 of
the 75 available seats.
As far as group rates go, (This is already included in the price
of a private car, so a car would run 68 X whatever ticket price)
for every 15 passengers we book, we get one adult ticket free.
Let's here some chatter about what people want to do.
Enjoy!

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N.4
Jerry,
The strange thing is that I must be the only person reading who
understands what T.A. is saying. (I think)
One is not required, nor should one be expected, to have every
different ethnic, social and religious group approve of what one
does. If a performer has a REASON (even if it is hidden away in
his own mind) to do a particular effect that is offensive to a
portion of the population, so be it. If it is so offensive that
no one will see him or his work, then the performer may starve.
Integrity intact.
However, if I come out and start talking about "niggering" or
"jewing" something down in price, because I'm too stupid to
realize that the remarks are degrading, then I am just being
offensive.
In other words, Andrew Dice Clay has a reason for doing what he
does. So he should be allowed.
We also must be careful about our wording here. If I say "Chink
cans" without ever having heard of "chink" being used as a slur,
then I am ignorant, not stupid. Upon learning of the use as a
slur, I would then be stupid to use it in public. (To magicians
it should still be used because what good is a language where
everyone calls everything by different names?)
Enjoy!

Max,
You are absolutly right about the needle and the compass. But at
some point logic needs to be intertwined.
Why would someone who is so powerful at telekinesis in some
stunts be straining so hard at others of much smaller magnitude.
Am I to assume by your statement that you know Geller and he has
told you that he has never learned a trick off a cereal box?
(That was my best "sound good" form of question, but you may not
care what I "assume" so let me ask differently. Do you know
Geller? What information do you possess that can allow you to
state so certainly that Geller has never gotten a trick off of a
cereal box?)
Enjoy!

In regards to practising at poker games, good advice, I think

I remember some years back someone (I can't remember who) saying

Re: URI GELLER
Want a cereal box trick? OK, here is one from a tape by Dan Witkowski
although not completely original to him.
First, you get two empty Honey Nut Cheerios boxes (he did it for "Big
G Cereals.") Now you cut the front panel off of one, including just a
little of the sides and bottom. You glue this over the front of the
other box, using the excess material. You can now stuff a silk (or
anything else that will lie flat - a fresh roadkilled rabbit, if you
have one) into the pocket. You can open the top and bottom of the box
and, with the bottom pointed to the audience, show the box to be empty.
Then with a wave of your wand, you can produce the silk or rabbit or
whatever.
If you work an adult audience, you could use two boxes from Trojans,
secret a dollar bill, and do some patter about how someone is making
money off of safe sex.

Re: CARNEY
Enjoyed your review in (the special underground Lance
Burton issue of) GENII of CARNEYCOPIA. I've been
waiting for a review that covered the fact that some of
the material has been published. Indeed, many of the
items specifically praised by other reviewers have been
published, and I have purchased them, as I have long
been a fan of John's magic. So -- was pleased to read
that this material had been expanded, and that there is
also a significant amount of new material. I'll now
look forward to the book.
Re John Carney, it is interesting how one's perceptions
change depending on where and when you see a performer.
I first saw him on the Palace of Mystery stage doing
his comedy act (getting shot with arrow, instant trip
to Hawaii, etc.). I was therefore surprised to find
him an excellent card handler, performing impromptu at
a convention in St. Louis. Caught him again at Las
Vegas during the comedy competition at a DMS, when his
act included his egg bag and miser's dream routine.
(Both of those routines were quite similar to routines
I used to do back when I did kid shows. Great minds
think alike? Nah, I suspect two minds influenced by
Charlie Miller.) In all three venues, I was most
impressed, and have therefore been looking forward to
an impartial vote of confidence re his new book.
Thanks.

Re: URI GELLER
Since we have narrowed down a very wide field of "psychic entertainers
or mentalists" to your show that I have seen in particular I can be
more specific. I did not see you perform any one trick or routine in
your show that I have ever read about anywhere else. I have seen other
mentalism acts perform tricks I HAVE read about. I am sure your show
is entirely your own creation. With your prodigious output of original
magic it should be. There were some TECHNIQUES in your show which I
have read about and are common to other performances.
I don't know how to say my next thoughts without seeming offensive but
the fact is that I could duplicate the effects you performed from
watching your performance. I might not follow your techniques 100% to
achieve those effects but I could duplicate the results.
If you remember I wrote several messages on Magic! in glowing praise of
your performance and showmanship that I would give a lot fo r to obtain
just a fraction of. So even if I were to perfectly duplicate a set of
techniques in an effect it would not have the same impact on an
audience that you would. I am only saying that I could physically
duplicate the effects I saw you perform and not that I could DO your
performance or that I am in any way as GOOD as you.
If you remember I wrote how I thought it was your tremendous
showmanship that made for such a great and memorable performance.
That is something no one can duplicate by just watching.

Re: URI GELLER
Good question. I wish I could leave it at that. I realize the answer
to this is not an easy one because it is making me THINK!
I have never been in a situation where someone did a gambling demo with
non-gambling skills and had someone say "WOW- that's incredible!"
I'm trying to mentally play out that scene in my mind and what I think
my response might be. The first thing that comes to mind is to take a
deck of cards and say "Oh yeah? Watch this!" and do one of my own.
When it comes to mentalism I feel that when a person views a series of
tricks that they believe to be a true demonstration of abilities t{at
[that] it further supports and steels their belief in, for want of a
better word, the supernatural, superstitions, et. al. I feel, and
probably not rightly so, that I am helping to protect them from being
taken in or taken advantage of.
This isn't a well thought out train of thinking. I'm just writing off
the top of my head and I'll probably get some heat for this!
Maybe I should don my asbestos gloves and welders goggles next time I
log on! Take care...

Re: URI GELLER
Soft Soap is basically a Kid Show "sucker" trick. You show three
handkerchiefs that have been SOILED badly (another version called
"Sophisticated Soft Soap" shows as some of the soils LIP PRINTS).
.
You show the dirty laundry, pick up a box of SOAP (they give you
a huge supply of plain unused soap boxes) and put the dirty hankies
into the box. You shake it up and down and turn it over... opening
the bottom and remove all the silk hankies... and they are clean
as clean can be....
.
The kids start to hoot and holler... "turn the box over, all you
did was to turn it over....boo boo hisssss... lets see the box....
etc. etc."
.
Soooo... for the kicker, you just tear open the box and toss it out
to the screaming assemblage... just in time so they don't rush up
on stage and rip you to shreds.
.
Is a genuine great trick and a definite fooler!
.
I am sure the major dealers still list it in their catalogs.

I've wondered about the opposite! It would seem to me that at his age,
the idea that something could be done magically would be just as
reasonable as the idea that it corresponded only with physical law, so
I would think that kids (other than magicians kids!) would assume that
there is no reason to suspect that something can't be magic.
'Tis a good season to ask the question, since I would imagine that
things would change about the same time that they stop believing in
Santa Clause or Grandfather Maccabee (? Funny, I never heard of him
until now!) or whoever visits Moslem, Buddhist or atheistic children
around this time of year.

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N.4
OK I think I got it. What you are saying is that if magician is using
offensive material and DOESN'T KNOW it's offensive, then he shows
his stupidity and insensitivity in the worst way. He/She has put
together material WITHOUT thinking about what he was doing and that
worse is than a person, who puts in offensive material, KNOWING it is
offensive.
.
We then move to the question of the person who has offensive material
in their act, and don't know its offensive, and are told it is offens
ive. They now have two choices, one - take out the offensive material
since their ignorance was their only crime. Second, they leave it in
claiming artistic freedom - where do we classify them then ?

I've been wanting to ask for some time.
Preface: Clearly, all of us who have seen you perform and who have
reviewed your performance here had nothing but overwhelming praise for
your showmanship and for your absolute control of the audience.
Question: In your own case, to what extent do you attribute this
quality to natural talent? And to what extent was it gained by dint of
hard work?
Correlative question: What activities would you recommend to one who
wished to improve their own skills in this area?

Re: URI GELLER
It is impossible for me to assess my make-up in regard to what percent
is natural talent and what percent is hard work. Certainly, there must
be some of the former; without question there is much of the latter.
The one activity I always recommend when asked a question of the sort
you pose is to join an amateur theater group.

It seems a lot of magicians received inspiration from Faucett Ross.
He must have written as much (letters) as Walter Gibson. He and
Danny Dew, I understand, were close... and both excellent club
performers.
I know a lot of magic came from Ross, but I had one bad experience
regarding the gentleman. Albiet minor.
He was at the Castle by the downstairs bar and there were LAYMEN
standing all over the place (it was pretty crowded) and he was
openly exposing the salt gimmick.
Maybe nobody knew what it was... but it just seemed in bad form

Re: URI GELLER
I know you asked the questions of Max... but to lend an opinion,
after all this is an open forum...
.
Most abilities in SHOWMANSHIP and PRESENTATION come from one's
OWN NATURAL BORN ABILITIES... they are glib, confident, have good
voice, unique appearance, etc... BUT THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT
ingredient comes from ONE THING.... WORK and study. You generally
find those that excell as performers (not in technique) have done
23,853 shows!
.
Like the older major comics say... "Nowdays (after the Catskills
died out and vodvil vanished) there is NO PLACE TO BE BAD!"
.
This has once again changed... with all the tiny comedy clubs all
over the country... there are thousands out their BEING BAD. Some
learn and move up... most just keep being bad.
.
Goshman is a good example. He took half-a-dozen basic effects and
performed them so many times that the magic became something he
didn't have to even think about... he then was able to build his
ability to ENTERTAIN and "work the audience".... you could see the
slow growth throughout his career.
.
There are some "very well-known" magi that paralled his career (in
time of activity) that, however DID NOT IMPROVE their personality
and showmanship.... it just happens to some.... and Vernon's words
have always stuck with me (and he is so right).. "The audience has
to like you in the first few seconds."
.
That is why I can view a tape, or judge an act in the first minute
or so... as to its value, if I will hire them or not...
.
If, on stage (or at the table) they LIKE (or LOVE) you... you are
almost home free!

Re: GIOVANNI IDEA
N
Ee;29199
OK... HERE IS THE LATEST....
.
The principle I have gone bananas over of late is the Giovanni Coin
thru Coin in the latest issue of Stan Allen's MAGIC Magazine...
.
The thought of using a compact disk was brought up here online, so,
I got my mitts on one. The hole is too small... but that is OK,
you need to use the same one over and over again for the trick
anyway... so.... just drill the hole out to the size required.
(I have not figured this yet, but that is minor detail)... One good
thought is to use a Quarter instead of the Half Dollar coin. Using
Carney's LOGIC, so few people see Halves... AND you use Quarters in
coin-op Music Machines... so... you tell 'em you have a new kind
of coin-op music system. Bring out the Compact Disk. Say, "all you
got to do is put the money in and it plays"... you can use a shot
glass or small glass to set on the table. You place the disk on
top of the glass and place a Quarter (folding kind) on the disk.
Say, "Watch... I will push the coin in... you don't believe me?
No... watch... you poke the coin in thru the small hole it lands
in the glass... AND JUST THEN THE MUSIC BEGINS TO PLAY FROM THE
DISK.
.
WOWOWOW.... YO!
.
How????
.
Some years ago I bought a trick where you showed a TINY speaker.
This was the kind that would be in a cheap Transistor Radio...
You used to lay it on the table and ask someone to lean over and
listen and they would hear music... there were handling bits, and
"on off gags" etc... but the basic (and Mike Weber has repeated
a similar idea in his latest lecture where you LISTEN to the rubber
ear pad covers from a Walkman Headset...
.
Method is same... You have a small radion on, under your coat with
a 'REMOTE' on/off switch. For this you need a small tape player
with a little speaker and the on/off switch... SO THE SAME TUNE
AS IS ON THE DISK PLAYS!
.
That is ONLY the bare bones... I don't know what you want to lead
in with, and I would avoid doing all kinds of switches with the
coin... just bring it out and do it... or borrow one and do one
switch... You might start out with the ungaffed coin and show how
you CANNOT push it thru the small hole... then you do it... then
you say, "Now if I do it with a glass under the disk, the glass
acts like a sound something or other and you can hear the music!"
.
Hey... if I worked it all out for you then everyone would do it
the same way...
.
Just look at how different the approach is already in just a few
days of the article breaking!!!!!!!!
.
Bizzare one... I don't know if the coin you describe will work, as
there needs to be some kinda design on it to HIDE THE FOLD CUTS.

To change the subject. THREE WANDS coming up. You are a beautiful
guy. Great stuff and one for JACK, no problem. The PARALLAX effect
is basically the one Terry Rogers put out a few years ago and one
that we had a discussion on MAGIC! a year or so ago. It is a
folded card routine in the vein of CARD WARP but much more
powerful (I think). I'll show you what I've done with it at DMS
but basically it is an effect of tearing a trapdoor in a card and
then turning the card over while the spectator holds the flap. Are
you CONFUSED??? by my rather terse description?? Hard to describe

David,
I don't know if Stan or I mentioned it, but one of the foul-ups
on the way to the castle was that our car broke down. I did a
temporary fix, and got us back on the road.
After we left you, we got about as far as the 5/10 interchange
and started having problems again. I did what I could, and we
kept having problems. We made it to Baldwin Park before the poor
thing gave up on us.
We called my in-laws who came and picked us up. We left the car
at the garage to be fixed and to pick it up the next day.
Our bill ran just a hair under $200 for the repair. An
expensive, but enjoyable day.
Enjoy!

T.A.,
I still haven't been able to get a hold of that book, but I did
ask Randi about it.
He said:
"First, Geller tried to fool the two scientists who 'discovered'
him, Targ & Puthoff, by doing a blindfold drive for them. They
knew how that was done, so they 'forgave' him that one.
"Second, I have videotapes in which it can clearly be seen that
sleight-of-hand is performed. This evidence is as strong as
seeing the wire on a Zombie. It is not a matter of opinion, but
a matter of strong, visible evidence.
"That evidence is evident to the layman, too, and I've not yet
shown it to a non-magician who failed to see the modus. Though
most of what Geller does takes place off-camera (the
'Drawing-in-the-sealed-envelope' bit, for example) some of it is
seen if you watch the videotape closely enough. I've shown
videotape to magicians in Denmark, Sweden, Italy and Mexico and
have collected just under 200 signatures to date on a document
affirming that sleight-of-hand can be clearly seen. Since Geller
says that he does not use such methods...."
I am not trying to take the heat off of myself in getting Randi's
response, but I did feel akward that we are having this debate
without hearing his side of it. It will be most interesting when
the next issue of Magic come out.
Enjoy!

I would also like to comment about the blindfold bit and P&T; again,
they may know how it could be done, but unless you are using a gaffed
blindfold this is the kind of effect where you can't be exposed --
i.e., caught in fraud. They may THINK you peek down your nose -- they
may be able to do the exact same things that way -- but that doesn't
mean that YOU did it that way.
What I am trying to do here is draw a very clear distinction between
alternate explanations of a paranormal occurrence, and someone getting
caught with evidence of chicanery right there. In my judgement, that
has not happened to Geller -- and if that film is so convincing, why
hasn't Randi shown it on TV?

Oh no. I'm sorry you got me going with the glass eye biz, but at
one time, there was this guitar player on the bus with a glass eye
and he lost it in a poker game to the drummer. After about an
hour, Mike (the drummer) went into the back of the buss and dropped
his slacks and placed Henry's glass eye in the appropriate "red eye"
spot and stood behind the door bent over "red eye" facing out.
Somebody told Henry to open the door and WHAM, it hit him where his
eye was. Guess you'd of had to of been there and know what it's like
to spend 325 days a year on a tour coach. Henry left the show after
that. He and Mike never saw eye to eye following the poker game.

While I can't speak for the entire Republican Party, I'm sure that we
would be delighted to have the other parties properly display the Flag
in a respectful manner. It is just when they burn it or wear it as
clothing that we get distressed. I mean, I've seen them lacy Flag
negligettes they sell - and while I do believe that both patriotism and
womanhood are concepts that strike deep into the heart of any Good
American - I can't see intertwining the two in quite that manner. You

RE: Fitzkee Trilogy
I pretty much agree with you. I view Fitzkee #1 (Showmanship) as a
VERY IMPORTANT book. It is followed by Fitzkee #3 (Misdirection). As
to Fitzkee 2 (Trick Brain), it is, in some ways, weak by comparison.
But I still feel that it is a good analysis and that it can be a good
thought provoker. That particular book is boring reading, at best, but
it does make the point that some effects, regardless of the materials
or the presentation used, are really quite the same, and is, therefore,
in my mind, a good book for routining.
I'm told that top clothing stores used to try to have at least one
color blind person on staff, since being able to see color can distort
ones ability to perceive such things as brightness range. Fitzkee #2
has seemed to me to be a guide to the analagous situation in magic -
allowing one to strip away the tools and to see the similarity in
effects.

Yep, it was some day here! Wind was REALLY strong! Took out the power
at 11:30 a.m. I didn't have the UPS set up right, so, of course, it
didn't cut in. Then the MAGIC! generator refused to start. Tracked
that to a fuel line problem. Then noticed we were low on gas, so went
to get some, only to find that the filler line was leaking. Our
disaster plan was a disaster! I think I've learned a couple of things
from this experience!
When you say "job" I sure hope you mean client or contract! Would hate

Re: CHOO CHOO TRAIN
Got your AMTRACK schedule - let's see what the members think. The Los
Angeles to Las Vegas segment (11:50 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.) sounds pretty
good - there are buses from the S.F. Valley and a number of outlying
areas that would run at pretty good times and that would be a great
trip. Even the Veglas to SLC portion (11:50 a.m. to 4 a.m. the next
day) doesn't sound bad (don't know what Nathan will think of that one
though!) and except for the weird start time, the SLC to L.A. is also
pretty good. Lots we could do along the way and I think we would have
a lot of fun - but let's see what the others have to say.
THANKS to you and Kevin Curtin for getting the work on this rolling!

Re: NEW MONTHLY COLUMN!
David C. Muravez has taken on a bold and clever task - he has decided
to create a "monthly column" here on MAGIC! (Historically, this is our
second such column - Pete Biro started the first one when MAGIC! was
just beginning - he discontinued it when h decided that it was more fun
to issue a daily column in the form of thousands of messages). David's
first column, in the Files Area as ALPHA-1.TXT, provides his review of
David Copperfield's show at the Wiltern and an interesting effect.
Naturally, since this is not a refereed or edited column, we do need to
state the disclaimer that all views expressed are soley those of Mr.
Muravez and not those of ECANET(tm) or MAGIC!(tm) or the Sysop and that
no endorsement of his views is expressed or implied.
But, this could get interesting! Check it out! In the Files Area -

There certainly was some "sensationalism" tonite! Thanks to MAX's tip
here on MAGIC!, I tuned in "HARD COPY." Yep, Melinda and Rich Little
were the "top story." And, yep, there was some sex and videotape
involved - Melinda says one day she came across a video labled "Lust
for Life" in R.L.'s collection. Thinking it would be interesting, she
popped it into the VCR and was suddenly confronted by views of her and
R.L. making love! She says that he apparently had a video camera
hidden in a closet in the bedroom! (Hmmm... wonder if she read the
great video debate here on MAGIC!?). R.L. says that the tape was made
_with_ her full knowledge and consent! And that her talking about it,
and what went on in their bedroom, is undignified.
There were some great shots of her show and, frankly, I don't think the
scandal, as it was presented on this program, hurt her or her career
one bit.

I find it surprising that you apparently don't remember that George
Bush was part of the Reagan administration for eight years prior to the
three thus far under his own presidency. That adds up to eleven years
of Republican administration with Bush's direct involvement, hence his

Re: FITZKEE TRILOGY
Last time I looked at the Fitzkee books I was about 15 years old
and probably had no idea what he was talking about. Guess I will
have to drag 'em out and study again...
.
FYI when he sold his Library to Lloyd Jones, Lloyd called me over
and said "I have all the books already, so whatever you want you
have the first shot..."
.
I got a set of MINT Goldston Locked books for $150 (all four books,
one not locked but in same series)... and hate to tell you what
else I got.... was a break beyond breaks for someone building
a library with no budget!

Re: URI GELLER
Sure the Randi vs. Geller is interesting to us, since One of them
is a magician. Altho escapology is a thin form of magic (to me)...
.
How about the JUICE MAN and guys like that selling "their" medicine
on TV... the gullible folks are the gullible folks and they, most
of the time, dive right in and get taken... because the alternative
is sitting around the house alone looking at four walls and/or
Vanna White clapping her hands like it is the first time she has
ever done so...
.
And reading Jeanne Dixon, et al, in the Star, etc...
.
How about the guys telling you that "even tho you are out of work,
don't have enough money to pay the rent, all you need to do is
apply for half a dozen credit cards, BUY MY PLAN, and in 30 days
you will OWN seven apartment buildings, a yacht and a boat slip
in Monte Carlo".... argh....
.
I am not saying Uri is one of those... but it goes back to the old
advice... "Let the Buyer Beware".... but nobody wants to ... they
ALL want it to be true....
.
Frankly, I don't know enough about what Geller is doing. Is he a
thief and a con man? Does he bilk the aged and unsuspecting? Or
does he just perform wonderfully and Randi doesn't like it because
Uri doesn't say "I have NO powers" ???
.
I did get a kick out of reading a couple of the books by Geller
and Randi... but that was all.... a few evening's entertainment.
.
When I saw Geller amaze a group of people with his key bending
I couldn't believe the effect he had on the assemblage.
.
I attributed 90-percent of it to his "animal magnetism"... his
"charm" his "aura"...
.
Just like i judge most magic acts, singers, you name 'em.... if
they GOT IT.... it doesn't matter what the tricks are.
.
Altho I think Michael Jackson has believed his PR and his latest
video (to me) sux. Proving, once again, he is just a real fallible
dude like any of us...
.
Stay tuned

Re: LOBOTOMY
Who says its better? Argh... saw a killer computer last night.
Went to Xmas party of a publisher friend (publishes a rock n roll
mag, a car mag and a computer mag)... the Ed of the Computer mag
was sitting with her laptop... she didn't want to put it down...
was a NOT YET OUT model of a MAC... had a built in trackball right
on the keyboard, located in middle from side to side and with
your fingers on the home keys the thumb was in perfect position to
move the trackball.
.
The unit was about 7 lbs... and the SUPER VGA screen was a KILLER.
.
She said she doesn't want to send it back when she is done doing
her review of it....

I would imagine that the publicity was engineered to help Melinda's
show which it will indeed accomplish. My favorite line from the
"Hard Copy" was ...."she's no Siegfried and Roy!" I watched it
wearing the MELINDA t-shirt that she gave the Goodyear crew last
time I was with Pete et al in LV.
