I really don't want to belabor this, but I think that we all know that

You have had a profound influence on Nathan. He talks about you all
the time. Today we took him to the Castle for "Kid's Day." But I'm
afraid he has too discriminating a palatte for that - when I asked him
what he liked best, he said, "the juggling!" (There was a Jr. Mage who
did a great juggling routine). He did spot Max's picture on the wall
of the Close-Up Gallery though, and he got all jazzed about that. I
interviewed him afterwards and plan to try to incorporate his review

My observation was made as a response to someone else's. Otherwise, I
would not have brought the matter up.
As a matter of policy, however, I try to separate my sysop duties from
my own personal opinions. I try to view my sysop role as more one of
coordination and management of the resource, not as one in which I
exercise undue control over opinion. I do, however, feel that our
stated topic is magic, not social policy. There are a great many
systems that are organized for discussion of social policy and I try,
sometimes in my own stumbling way, to keep this one closer to its
purpose.

Re: "KID'S DAY"
Today was "Kid's Day" at the Magic Castle. An annual day for the
children and grandchildren of members. So we bundled Nathan into the
car and went on down. I'm going to try to incorporate his review into
my own.
There were a lot of good people there who set out to provide the kids
with a good time - I think I heard that 52 members volunteered to
perform during the day. And there were some wonderful things going on!
One lady dressed up as Ariel, The Little Mermaid, and did hundreds of
balloon animals and figures throughout the day. Another did newspaper
trees - which brought back a ton of memories to me since they were one
of the first things I ever remember seeing a performer do and I
probably haven't thought about them for about 30-years.
Irma also was kind enough to perform for the kids (and their parents)
and was a big hit.
The shows apparently featured a lot of performers and since I didn't
see them all I can't comment on many of them. I'm sure that some were
very good. BUT some of the others were done by volunteers and I guess
there is no screening or audition procedure, so it was driven home to
me that BAD MAGIC IS FAR, FAR WORSE THAN NO MAGIC AT ALL. One guy had
to keep turning around to reload his pockets, he had to reset his
linking rings IN FRONT OF THE AUDIENCE, and, while it would seem almost
impossible to flash a small ball in a Chop Cup, he managed to do it!
I would have thought that it would have taken hours and hours of
practice to be THAT BAD.
In the Palace, in the show we saw, there were some very good people.
Billy McComb did a terrific job of blending attention to the child
audience with side comments to the adults. Petrick and Mia obviously
worked hard to do a special show for the children, and there was a Jr.
Mage who did some excellent juggling. Still, I noticed that most of
the performers had a difficult time building rapport with the children.
The children were attentive and respectful, but there was not the sort
of give and take that I would have expected.
Nathan rated the juggling as the best part of the day, giving second
place to Petrick's milk production. He liked Billy McComb, but he
found the card trick difficult to follow (a card to balloon) and didn't
like the loud noise the balloon made when it popped (I think this was
due to the PA system amplifying it). He enjoyed Ariel, the balloon she
made, and the newspaper tree. He did not have any flattering remarks
about the guy with the Chop Cup.

Re: YOUR COLUMN
I've downloaded your "alpha" column, and feel a few comments are in
order. You credit David Copperfield for his "sheer ingenuity" with the
Orson Welles card trick. The ingenuity belongs to Welles and Richard
Himber. DC's contribution was in purchasing the film clip and having it
doctored so that Welles is heard talking to "Dave" rather than "Dick."
As for the "Interlude" illusion, you are incorrect when you state that
it is "by no means new." It _is_ new. It was not "rediscovered" by the
Pendragons; rather, it was devised by Jim Steinmeyer, who sold them the
rights to perform it, and subsequently sold the rights to Copperfield.
David's use of the illusion is strictly legitimate.

statements is that....

"Take the number of exhibitions of magic that are given throughout
the country in a single day. This means all of them--good, mediocre
and poor.f Fully seventy-five percent of the performance are poor
according to modern entertainment standards. Another twenty-four
percent are mediocre.
"The writer feels he is being conservative when he estimates that
not more than one percent... ... can be called smart and modern.

When ninety-nine percent of a product is poor or mediocre ALL of it
is classified that way. That's why every poorly prepared magical
performer HURTS THE ENTIRE FIELD."

IT!)

You want the truth? I think that the magnetism, universal access to
electric power, stereo systems, faxe machines, the telephone, and the

An Annotated, rather than updated, Fitzkee would be interesting! I
found I was able to pierce the antiquated references to keep to the
meat of the books, but it wouldn't hurt to have an annotated edition.
Might put the books into a few more folks hands, and that would

David--
I think that it is the person that matters in magic. It is because
technology has such a grip on our lives that I think magic is
important: for me magic reminds me that there is something more,
something different than what technology can provide. I really like
what Eugene Burger says, "I like effects that seem *magical*" as
opposed to just being fast with your hands or clever.
In a routine I do I make a "voodoo" doll and bring it to "life". It
walks and moves, etc. While you could esily say "Well, it's a remote
controlled device" that never enters the mind of my audience--not with
the story _I'm_ telling them.

Well. artistic freedom. I would be the last to limit one's
freedom, but is it not so that before the artistic freedom comes
the artistic decision. If there is something in my act which turns
out to be offensive, and I was not aware of its offensivenesss
before, then that offensiveness has NOT been an artistic decision
of me. If to be offensive has not been an artistic decision of
mine, then it also has not an artistic goal, has it? If it has no
goal, then it also has no place.
When something turns out, inadvertently, to be offensive, one has
to rethink. To use the idea of artistic freedom to prevent
rethinking, smells of un-integrety, which is the opposite of
artistry. Art is always integre. It can be right, it can be
totally wrong, it can even be totally
disgusting, but it is always integre with the creator. Otherwise
it would be a lie, and art cannot come into existence by lying.

David,
I agree with Max on this one. Magic appeals to that part of us
that wants to believe in miracles. The part that enjoys being
baffled.
I think that there is no race with technology. On the other
hand, I see many people who are involved in magic involved in
technology also.
I mentioned the other day that I saw an old tape of Max on T.V.
The performance involved finding one person at Universal studios
in Florida. If we were competing with technology, the best
performance would have been to have been blindfolded and go
directly to the person chosen. However, the audience wanted to
see a performance, not a demonstration. That is what Max gave
them.
Enjoy!

Yes, but what you are saying about "entertainment comes from the
Person" applies to all methods of entertainment - singing, playing the

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
I hope magic helps the audience reach back into the myths and rituals
that once gave meaning to their lives. It's the MYSTERY that I try to
arouse. I don't know if that is _different_ from other art forms. A
certain song can make me reach far back into myself and bring forth
feelings and memories I had long since stuffed away. I might
add--certain magic routines do the same to me.
The perfect "steal" or a great "vanish" do little to move me: The
story surrounding them, however, has a chance. I guess I'm a
story-teller.

I am not sure why you think magic IS competing with technology. Magic
is a theatrical experience; technology is an abstract notion, and in
the concrete is matter-of-fact, exactly the opposite of magic.
The only connection I can see, a tenuous one, is that in some areas,
notably mentalism, you sometimes must make a point of indicating
indirectly that you ARE NOT using technology -- FM pickups in the ear,
for example. The "wonders of technology" however aren't wonders;
they're just things. Magic, ideally, is very different indeed.

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
Thank you for your message, T A. Perhaps it will help me to clarify
what I am trying to conceptualize.
Several years ago, an acquaintance of mine, Richard Byrne, said "the
awe has gone out of the World." His example was the small language
translating computers you see around. He had one of the first
prototypes (probably about 6" square and an inch thick) and he showed
it to his class. At the time, it should have been a marvel. The
response was "too big, too heavy." Sheesh! It was a _miracle_ that
the darn thing existed at all!
We live in a World where people _can_ fly; around the world in less
than 90-minutes. Where it is almost as easy to phone Hong Kong as to
yell across the back porch (and we complain if the connection isn't
perfectly clear). Byrne said, "You are in a jet plane - just beyond
two thin sheets of plexiglass is the stratosphere - out there there is
practically no air, the temperature is far below zero, and you are
traveling at very close to the speed of sound, 40,000 feet above the
ground. And you are ticked because there isn't enough ice in your
drink!"
Now, perhaps overstating the case a bit, but how do card tricks, egg
bags, and zombie balls "play" in a World like that?

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
'Real Magic' appeals to the genetic consciousness that there is some-
thing more than just the material world. Magic is older than science
and all current religions. When someone witnesses a modern magician
(not just some guy doing tricks - I mean MAGIC) there is an awakening
to the realization that there more than just that which 'appears' to
be reality - It reminds us that our conscious minds do not necessaril
y perceive reality as it really is.
.
I have started to define magic as applied sleight of mind. If I can
construct a sequence that your mind follows - only to reveal at the
end that your perceived 'reality' is not what actually occured - you
have had a magical experience ! If the sequence I construct does
not misdirect your mind from the 'reality' of what occured, it is not
magic. The best magic is that which leaves
your mind in a state of not being able offer a reasonable solution
to what you have observed.
.
Needless to say I rarely see 'real magic' much anymore as my ability
to offer reasonable solutions increases as my experience increases.
.
Every so often I still get that 'WOW' feeling when I see something
and just can't figure out how it was done. I had the feeling a lot
more when I was 9, when everthing was a big 'WOW'. Now days I get my
'WOW' by seeing it in other peoples eyes.

Re: PARALLAX V.1 N4
To: Tommy Wonder
I agree - the idea that something in someone's act can be unknowingly
offensive means that the person hadn't thought about why the material
was in the act in the first place. If it is in the act 'knowingly'
then one has to appreciate the person's right to artistic freedom,
although I may not personally agree with the material, I should
consider the person put it in for their own reasons.
.
Of course if I find it offensive, as others may as well, then the
artist must take the consequences of not having anyone seek out their
act. As a result of this discussion I have reviewed some of the thing
s I use and have tightened it up quite a bit. I don't normally use
stuff that could be considered offensive in the first place, its not
my style.
.
I do modify my lines depending on the audience, as some things don't
work in a 'family' situation as they do in a 'bar' situation.
If I used my 'bar' lines without adjusting for the audience I would
definitely offend someone. One must always be aware of what works
best in any given situation - which means being sensitive to the
audience and adjusting accordingly.
.
Hope you have a good holiday season.

O.K. Fine. I have developed a new illusion for my new act. It
orginally called for four pieces of flash paper 30" x 30" . I was sure
I could find a source to supply them. But since I'm going to have to
do the act six nights a week, twice a night. Well...the expense was
just more than I wanted to go in for. Is your's a one time affair? I
am directing a feature film in 1992 that will call for a "one-time"
giant flashpaper gag. But knowing the motion picture biz, it's gonna
take several takes to get it right. I may call upon you when the time
comes to buy said flash paper. I also have called a "pyro" bud of mine

Why must magic offer something that other forms of entertainment
do not?
.
Do singers say, "Songs must offer... etc... "
.
We are just out there doing our "bit"... had I a good voice I
would have been a singer... had I a good memory for lines I would

I don't think what you use (mime, 3 balls, egg bags, roller skates,
whatever...) is important -- as an entertainer.

You see Mr. Below Average in motor skills, no voice, no brains,

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
Very simply, they play because the context is different -- and
something can be amazing, like technology, without being mysterious.
The idea of magic is not to puzzle people, or get them to say you are
amazing -- a juggler is amazing, and so is an edge-detection program;
the idea of magic is to create MYSTERY -- to make people think, if only
while they are watching and suspending their disbelief, that there is
something beyond not only what they know but what they expect.
Many things in the world create wonder and amazement without having
any hint of the impossible; the special role of magic is to create a
world where the impossible is made real.
All that said, I will grant that 90 percent of magic does not address
it -- is trivial, and has no emotional connection -- but I think that
when one discusses any art it is in terms of that art at its greatest
potential expression.

I agree with your concern about the recent "Japan Bashing" that is so
common in our press. The point is rarely made that the press does not
get hysterical when a British Corp buys yet another piece of property
in Downtown New York or another major food distributor. It is still a
fact: The UK is the largest buyer in the USA and has holdings nearly
twice that of Japan. Of course the UK represents White, Western
Europians.

JUst hold onto the feeling of having experienced the magic. Once you
see 'how' it was done, you will never be able to experience the same
feeling again. There are several effects that I'm sure I could figure
out, but refuse to do so, since I don't want to lose the mystery and
feeling of magic the the effect arouses in me.
.
The worst thing that can happen is to have someone do an effect you
really like, so badly, that the method is 'exposed'. Those guys
should be banned from magic forever.

That's exactly what I mean, offensive material is context sensitive.
The performer must be aware of what will work in different venues.

People that just mouth exactly the same patter without any thought as
to what type of audience they are performing for are the worst. I
would prefer them to just 'demonstrate' and not even try to add a
story line.

Regarding religions (a subject that you seem to have sense enough

When I was younger I went with a vehemence against any verbal

themselves to the likes of me.

Max's comment suggests the same thing. And maybe I'm taking a narrow
view, but I've always thought that if I could go back to King Arthur's

recorder, etc. - I could put Merlin into the ranks of the unknown.
Assuming, of course, that I also brought the infrastructure and the

I'll be happy to enlighten you. There is no limit as to what cannot be
done -- it is an infinite set. Thus, no matter how many technological
achievements create new "things that couldn't be done until now," the
gap between that number and the unlimited realm of possibilities stays
the same.
Have you figured out yet that technology and magic have explicitly
cross purposes?

In theory, yes, possible and impossible are discrete. But for magical

possible expands.

I had, of course, considered the problem by using set theory. As I
mentioned to T A, though, the difficulty is the human ability to
conceptualize. I don't see many new effects that stretch the boundary
of the possible.
My own view has always been that technology was started by early
magicalumpen. But I would really appreciate your further explaination

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
It all depends on whether you consider them to be infinite disjoint
sets or not. If they are both infinite then there relative size
makes no sense. If however you consider them finite (albeit quite
large) then as one increases the other decreases by defintion.
.
Ultimately it gets down to whether you think the universe is open or
closed - or said another way finite or infinite.
.
Max suggested that the impossible is infinite, which would also imply
that the concept of relative size is meaningless. If we restrict the
possible and impossible to the 4 dimensional physical plane and
assume that it is finite then the concept of relative quantity of
possible and impossible becomes meaningful.

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
Magic is the demonstration of the impossible as defined by what is
currently possible. For example, if I could cause objects to 'disappe
ar' and 'reappear' several thousand miles away that would be magic,
unless we had developed a technology similiar to Star Trek's transpor
ter.
.
As Pete said transmitting pictures of people from all over the world
into a little box in his house is 'magic' to him, to those that
understand the technology involved its just a process.

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
If it isn't impossible, it is just the demonstration of a skill; I have
always had the notion that the whole idea of magic is to do the
impossible. In this context, I can't imagine what you mean by "beyond
the ability of humans to perform..." If you mean perform in the sense
of executing an effect, you're switching contexts from creator to
perceiver. If you mean humans as opposed to para-humans (magicians),
yes; magicians, in the real sense, are supposed to have powers that
ordinary humans do not have.

Theoretically, maybe -- but I don't see what basis could be used to
determine relative sizes of possible and impossible -- unless one has
the intellectual arrogance indicated in the (apocryphal) story of the
British Patent Office considering closing in the 1880s because
everything had been invented...!

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
Ok, so you are talking about theoretical magic or magic which might be
performed by meta-humans (magicians) [I believe "para" connotes
subordinate, as in "para-legal"] and in that context I would agree with
you. And, yes, then in that realm the discussion makes sense. But I
thought that I had started this thread with the assumption that we were
talking about magic as a performing art and not magic in the abstract.
That sort of leaves me with the original "problem" - that magic as a
performing art has an increasingly difficult time in transcending the
ordinary or the technologically possible.

Re: URI GELLER
This whole discussion of magic and technology is a very old
problem for some. I'd rather worry about playing cards not being
used for games; and no one conversant with them. Just try
borrowing a cigarette these days. They're hard to find.
.
Siegfreid and Roy may have a problem, as I understand in
their show it is hard to see the magic for the lasers and other
stage effects. When Lance Burton does the duo-levitation I don't
think there are many people who are baffled by the effect. "What
magic? - I didn't see any magic!" They are too overcome.
.
On the other hand most close-up and platform performers
should have little problem. I've seen a group of adults blown
away by the egg bag. Signed card in the wallet, copper silver
brass etc... Technology will never hurt these effects.
.
Which, I suppose, brings up another problem which is being
discussed these days. I disagre with Eugene Berger and his school
of thinking that magic must be presented with an air of mystery.
Bob Sheets and other comedy magicans who perform baffling items
have proven that mystery is not necessary.
.
People enjoy watching a skilled performer. No one watching
John Scarne or Slydini Etal thought anything but that hey were
watching great skill. The effects were astounding and they
couldn't see anything.
.
One last puzzling example. I'm sure that viewers of Del
Ray's electronic wizardry, know it's electronic. But they don't
care because they are laughing too hard at Del's interaction with
the creatures. It is a tongue-in-cheek presentation.

Agree - it is the person that matters. Disagree with Burger
that things _must_ seem magical. Too many of the presentations of
this sort seem overly precious.

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
David - Tricks with cards and the Egg Bag will continue to
amuse and entertain if they are well done by an engaging
performer. Don't know about zombie - ask Biro. That $100 bill
switch will bring up enough aboriginal greed to interest anyone.
No overselling of mystery necessary.

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
Yes! Good tricks do look like magic because, no matter what
the presentation, if they can't explain what happened it is a
magical effect.
.
When you get older the WOW is harder to come by, but it can
still happpen. I didn't have any idea of how three coins could
penetrate a glass-top table _upward_. This effect was so
astounding to me that I was able to entertain people just
explaning the effect to them.

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
Max - hate to get philosophical. Certain things cannot be
done e.g. squaring a circle, God creating something he couldn't
lift, presupposing nothing can be created he couldn't lift. These
are impossible. The world is finite so I would think there would
be a finite number of things which haven't been done _yet_. It's
finite but pretty big so there is little difference between this
finite and infinite.

Have a good year and hope to see you again in '92.

Great Max! I am assuming that magic = conjuring. You could
also equate mystery with amazement.

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?
People can accept the impossiblity of transposing images by
TV or FAX - they know it's some technology. A signed card in a
zippered wallet will kill them because they can't ascribe it to
some technology. There are no boxes or wires and nothing is
plugged into the wall. They see it under their nose. Close-up
magic has no problem with technology.

Re: URI GELLER
No one, I think, has said that magic MUST be presented with an air of
mystery -- but the fact that there are many comedy magicians who are
good entertainers may have less to do with the magic and more with the
comedy. A lot of them -- perhaps most -- would entertain JUST AS WELL
without ANY MAGIC AT ALL. This seems to me to indicate that they are
not PRIMARILY magicians, though many do fine magic.
There are many different ways of presenting magic -- as a vehicle for
comedy, as an aesthetic visual experience, as spectacle, and as
mystery; it is my own view that the PRIMARY value of magic lies in its
mysterious aspect, a quality which it perhaps shares only with special
effects in films and with no other live performance. I feel that when
people go to see a magic show they expect to see magic -- and many
times I have sat in a Magic Castle or other audience and heard people
grumble because they wanted magic and were getting comedy; note that
this happened even when they liked the comedy.
