Re: URI GELLER

In the major metropolitan centers, there are a number of professional
theater groups that have classes; it is not always easy to tell the
good ones from bad. My rule of thumb back in New York was only to work
with a person who had taught for a while to favorable response and --
more importantly -- WAS A PRO ACTOR, whose work I could see. A whole
lot of people in the field talk a good game and that's about it...

Unfortunatly the jury changes freequently, depending who Bill Cosko
can get. I remember the jury on my membership trial, Boy wasa I
scared!!! Here was this 21 yr old kid, not really affialiated with the
magic trendmiesters of the day, But I did the best 9 minets of the 15
I had prepared. the jury was Bill Cosko, Rick Rassmusson and I beleive
Gearold Kosky. They only flunked 1 person that night and they usually
let you walk out alone and not let the other prospects know.. Don't be
nervose, these are just magicians/people like yourself. the main thing
is alot of chutzpah!!! Do it and have FUN!!!

All this is very good advice, however, I think working in an amateur
theater group is even better than an acting class. In a community
theater group (and I have run both amateur and professional ones) an
individual is thrown into the problem of performing before a paying
audience. Believe me, you learn how to duck very fast :-)

Re: MAGIC CASTLE

I assume that your audition is close-up? If so, it will probably be
held in the Hat and Hare room down in the basement (not the "Museum
Room"). The stage is one of the classic green tables and the lighting
is very well directed onto the table. I'm not sure, but I think there
is a dimmer that can be found at the bottom of the fireplace if you
need it. Generally, they have the folks waiting for the audition
assemble at the table just before the aisle leading to the close-up
room. Then they call you downstairs one at a time. Pete Biro's
picture is on the wall in the stairwell going down, so you can give it
a "good luck" tap on the way in.

Re: MAGIC CASTLE

Oh! One more thing - they will come back to the table up near close-up
after everyone has auditioned and will take those who made it back
downstairs. BUT, if they cut you off before your routine is finished,
you can figure YOU ARE IN. If there are a lot of auditions, they may
do that. If not, they may let you run the full set.

As to the system we use for MAGIC!, we'll need to discuss that in priv.

Re: FLASHING MAGICIANS

I think knowing where to look and 'knowing' when the move is made is
different than 'flashing'. Flashing to me shows that the person isn't
taking care of the angles or is trying something they shouldn't be
showing in public yet. For example, doing a double lift and having
the cards jogged apart is a 'flash' to me. A double lift is supposed
to be 2 cards shown as one, but if I see that they are really 2 it
ruins the whole effect.
.
I may be able to detect the 'when' of a move, but not the 'what',that
is still magic to me.

I guess I'me leading a sheltered life. No, I am not familiar
with the Maharishi University. About the only thing I know about
the Maharishi is the experiences with the Beatles.
I assumed no zero because the concept of zero is generally
attributed to the arabic system of numbers which dates back to
about the first millenium whereas the vedas were written about
1500 to 500 b.c.e.
Okay, Babylonians had a symbol for the absence of a number in

Re: NEW CLUB

Mike, thanks very much for the offer. We are in a new small
showroom upstairs. It seats about 95, and is real cutsey. We
are just into our second week and getting ready for press night.
We might be changing the name of the show slightly to reflect
more variety to to general public. But I think it will be OK in a
few more weeks.......

Now for the bad news. I got out the scrapbook that I keep my post

only about 40-percent of the money. I got 2 to trade or sell now!
It would almost be worth going back to San Francisco and showing

I guess that they assume that most folks do close-up. And I think you
have a few moments to arrange the table/chairs/your props to suit
yourself. Usually, that room has space for a chair between the
fireplace and the table - I don't know of any reason you can't stand
up. I presume you could work the room any way that you want. When I
did my audition there were about seven people there and they were most
curteous. One thing, if you have a drink in your hand - DO NOT set it
on _the_ table! Those are fancy, expensive surfaces! The Chairman of
the committe has been known to put his drink on the table, but doesn't
allow anyone else to do so!

MCGAME.ASC _IS_ the Basic program for the game in _text_ form. I don't
know Macs, but you probably do the same thing as you do with MS-DOS -
load it into Basic and save it back out. Saving it back out will
automatically (I presume on a Mac) "tokenize" it. Then, if you have a
MacBasic (or whatever you folks call it) compiler, you should be able
to compile it.
If it runs OK compiled, maybe you can put the compiled version in the
files so we can make it available to other Mac users.

Naturally you will want to be accepted, and you almost certainly will

Chants & Magic words get STRONGER for the individual the more they

Sure they are; the Seven Words have an intrinsic quality totally
unrelated to their meaning. You can say "sexual intercourse" on
television but not the four-letter synonym; you can even refer to the
word elliptically as I just have, so that virtually everyone knows
EXACTLY what word you mean -- but say it and POOF! You have vanished
from the airwaves. Any anthropologist will tell you this is magical

The two factors are related, of course; your true name IS you, so to
speak, and as knowledge of it becomes disseminated its power -- and
therefore yours -- lessens. The other factor is that the True Name is
a specific focus for a spell -- but adepts of enough ability to do such
spells in workable fashion don't need it as a mnemonic crutch in any
case.

OK, anthropologically they are magic, but hardly in any other manner.

anyone would find their use entertaining. You would think that after

When is this 'NERVE WRACKING' DAY AT THE CLOSE UP TABLE IN HELL'
taking place?
.
Most selections, elections, appointments are based on the wrong
factors. The Good Ole Boy Network is a good ole example.
.
The winners of the Magic Castle awards generally go to those that
they have heard the most of. A killer lecturer can work and no one
(in the mass membership) ever heard of the person... and someone
that does a medium quality lecture with a BIG NAME will USUALLY
win...
.
Everything boils down to a POPULARITY contest.
.
I don't know if you can socialize and visit with the committee
prior or not...
.
But... if you are cool, do the stuff without screwing up and IN MY
OPINION... Make 'em smile... you can't lose...

Fortunately there wasn't much and it ONLY discolored the outside

I rationalized the look by saying "it makes them look older"....

Comedy Central is almost all I watch anymore. Altho I hate the
couple doing "Short Attention Span Theater" and some of the NEWER
kinda MC's... mostly like "Mystery Science Theater 3000" -- Joel
Hodgson does a lot of comedy magic... is very talented dude.
.
Steve Allen, Jack Benny and Sgt. Bilko -- and McHales Navy, are also
my favorites. Those comedy shows make the PARADE of sitcoms with
Smart A** kids mouthing off to adults look like CRAP... which they
are!
.
TV is one area where if they WENT BACKWARDS it would get better!!!

Max,
I wasn't trying to suggest that you were wrong with your
statement about the origin of zero. I was just trying to make
the point that if the zero had been invented after the start of
the common era (birth of Christ for those of us who were taught
history before such "politically correct" terms were used) then a
mathematics invented at the time of the vedas wouldn't have used
zero.
I didn't realize that you write screenplays. What genre do you

Pete,
I hope to make them smile. The main lesson that I've learned in
performing is that if the performer is enjoying himself, then
usually, the audience will also. I have my ad-libs all prepared.
I've got my patented "good-natured" smile all prepared. I
haven't screwed up one of the tricks I'm going to do for them in
the last hundred showings.
Monday is audition day.
In all fairness to the castle, I've yet to see the awards
ceremony that was giving awards on the basis of merit alone. I
guess every organization has a "good ole boys" network. Just
some of them are "gooder" than others.

She took everything she could find and put it in a box. I was
working as a head of computers on a political campaign at the
time. She took vital disks of information (We spent over one
hundred thousand dollars on pollsters for this information) and
put it in the same box as a magnetic page holder. Then she

Re: COVEN?

Pete,
You know, that was one of the real attractions of The Cosby Show
when it first aired. The kids tried to mouth off, but the adults
didn't have sub-normal intelligence (like every other show on the
air) and put the kids back where they belonged. As kids. (But
that too has passed.)
Just remember that the early days of television had its share of
crap too. Remember My Mother the Car?
The one advantage that early television had, was they didn't have
to worry so much about instant gratification. These days, if a
show wants to continue existance, they have to garner every
possible person they can. This means, to some degree, the lowest
common denominator. Oh well, life in the big city....
Enjoy!

If you use them outside of a specific ritual purpose they do get
weaker. If you use them JUST for a specific purpose within a specific
ritual purpose they get get stronger as the mental linkage gets
stronger each each time you do the ritual.
.
Common magic words used in common magic (i.e. tricks) such as,
Sim Sala Bim, Abracadabra, etc. are mere shams of their original
use. Ritual magic and its magical words and chants are not used for
entertainment, rather to focus the will of the magician for some
specific purpose.

I attended the castle anniversary party the 2nd and have news on the
pig. Milt said, "The artist will be taking the sculture back, to the
junkyard where it belongs, in March. We will be redoing the
landscaping in front of the castle to make it more compatible with
the Victorian theme".
.
He gave a tour of the new area and the access problem has been solved
there is a stairway just opposite the entryway to the parlour (a door
on the left) that will be enclosed and will give access to a foyer
and the W.C. Fields bar. There is a 60 seat theatre with rear project
ion TV as well as normal front projection film capability.
.
He would not commit as to when it would all be finished, but some of
it should be open this year.

Re: BRAZEN ANNOUNCEMENT

Gentlemen:

David has been nice enough to let me mention the
culmination of a project I've been working on for quite
some time, and which a few of you know about already.
I'm pleased to announce that LITTLE EGYPT CARD TRICKS,
a book I've been working on for the past year, is
completed and ready for shipment. Subtitled "Object
Lessons in Personalized Card Magic," the book will be
advertised as "An unusual collection of commercial card
presentations and diverse advice." Also, it will be
noted that it "Includes the Last Word Card Stab, a
stunning right-through-the-deck card stab." Little
Egypt, by the way, is the part of southern Illinois in
which I grew up.

Physically, it is 8 1/2 by 11, 122 pages, comb bound
(sorry, Pete). Special Canadian edition available on
red paper. It contains 10 card trick presentations, 9
essays, 8 rules to make your magic more effective, and
a bibliography. The foreword is by Mike Rogers. The
price tag is $22 plus $3 shipping. For MAGIC! members
only, skip the shipping charge.

Beyond these statistics, I won't comment. Review
copies went out this morning to the principal
reviewers. Meanwhile, my wife would love to see all
the copies outta here. If anyone is interested, and
you can't think of anything to buy until Pete's linking
ring opus comes out, the address is 1639 Sycamore
Court, Bloomington, IN 47401.

I apologize for this blatant commercial message, but I
promised the few who knew of this venture that MAGIC!
would be the first to know, and I've tried to stick
enough into this one message so that we won't have to
belabor the subject in future messages.

Yes, that makes a LOT of sense! I had always assumed that Abracadabra,

Re: IS MAGIC DEAD?

The intent of "p.c." folk (among whose number I do not count) is to
avoid offending other people by adhering to a tightly defined code. The
use of "B.C.E." in place of "B.C." and "C.E." rather than "A.D." is
generally done as a statement about the writer's own world-view, which
is another thing entirely.

My screenplays are written under the Maven name; however, although I
have sold three out of the five I've written, only one has been
produced -- and it's not a story piece per se; rather, it is a home
video production integrating vignettes with interactive magic.

Kevin:
Best advise I can give is to do the stuff that you have been doing,
rather than try to introduce something new in an effort to either fool
or impress them. And, if what you do is similar to what others do, so
be it. I say this because if something goes wrong, it's probably
something that has gone wrong before and you know how to deal with it.
If it's something new and it goes wrong, well, you won't have the
variety of directions available since you'd have less experience with
it.
But, what has been said before can be said here. "This advise is
probably worth what you paid for it." Anyway, good luck!

There is some doubt, at least in my mind, as to how the whole Super Pig
incident took place. BUT apparently, once it was installed, the real
issue became a power struggle between Milt and the Board. It is my
understanding that Milt _never_ liked Super Pig, but that he would not
remove it under pressure. This may, of course, be only hearsay and
gossip. I doubt that we will ever know the full, real, story.

"Half masks" may be a good idea. I believe there are rubber pig snouts
available. Those are not as burdensome as masks and might even allow

incorporate a voodoo doll of a pig into the ceremony as well - suspend
it over the table? I guess I'm really getting into the theme of this!

Re: MAGIC CASTLE

It should be noted that the Board is for the Academy of Magical Arts,
of which the Castle is the clubhouse. The two are connected but not
the same thing -- thus what the Board says about what goes on IN the
Castle, as it relates to the organization of the Academy, is usually
followed -- but the Castle itself is a separate entity and -- at least
as I understand it -- the Board can make recommendations regarding the
Castle but does not have any say in the day-to-day operation. Their
option, if they came to loggerheads with the Castle, would be to go
elsewhere -- not a very probable or realistic option.
Again, all this is my impression of how things work, and should be no
way considered to be the final word.

Will arrive Vegas this Thurs for CES and staying at the DI. Hope to
get to the club. Are you performing, and if so, are you doing the same
act as last time at the Castle? If not performing, are you there every
evening?
Bruce Sandercock is planning to get by and see you Tues or Weds, I
believe.

I had personally always thought that the PG stood for "Parental

There have, of course, been other famous people with those initials:
Edmund Gaines, for example, had the middle name of Pendelton, making
him an EPG; there was the Roman Emperor Publius Gallienus; Paul
Gauguin; J. Paul Getty; Sir Phillip Gibbs; and the redoubtable P. G.
Wodenhouse.

None of the above, however, to the best of my knowledge, also used a
nom de magie of M&M.

Re: CASTLE AUDITION

First, let me thank all of those who offered much helpful advice
and information about my audition for membership for the Magic
Castle.
Second, let me say that I have never been so nervous in my life.
I guess I misheard what Bill Cosko said as far as the time. I
was there at 6:45 and found out I wasn't supposed to be there
until 7:15.
Even if I had arrived at 7:15, I would have had a heck of a wait.
They didn't actually start auditioning until after 8:00.
I saw a gentleman who was waiting to audition do some great
routines. He was going on and on about the audition process.
When asked how he knew so much about it, he said that he had
auditioned a couple of months earlier, and had been rejected.
Gulp.
There were about 17 people auditioning. So many people, in fact,
that there were two committees judging. The process was still
horribly slow. About half-way through, I was called.
There were three people on my judging committee. I don't
remember their names, but they were quite friendly and
supportive. They asked me about my renewed interest in magic,
and I mentioned MAGIC! BBS. One judge perked right up, "Oh, yes,
I know about that." she said. The only thing that surprised me
about the opening interview was the fact that they kept saying
"You've never taken magic lessons? No magic lessons at all?"
I thought "well, heck, I guess this is a blow-out."
I did my first routine. No problem. I was shaking, but not to
the point where it detracted from the performance. My ad-libs
were ad-libing, and my mouth wasn't letting me down.
Everything went quite well until I got about 6 or 7 minutes in.
I suddenly drew a blank. Nothing. I don't think I could have
told you my name if I had been asked. I have NEVER drawn a blank
during a performance before.
So, while I was getting ready to do 4 or 5 minutes of impromptu,
one judge looks to the other two and says "I think we've seen
enough." Talk about timing. I could have kissed him.
I went upstairs to await the decision, and lo and behold Richard
Turner was performing the close up room tonight, and he was at
the main bar.
I introduced myself to tell him how great I thought his video
was, and he invited me to join him. He gave me a mini-lesson at
the bar, and was an extraordinarily congenial person.
After my conversation with Richard Turner, someone came up and
asked if there were any applicants in the room. A number of us
spoke up, and we were escorted downstairs.
Bill Cosko addressed us by telling us we owed him money. And
thus, I find out that I am one of the newest members of the Magic
Castle.
Of the original 17 applicants, 11 were passed. Some of the
people who passed had gone on and on about how badly they had
blown the audition. (One fellow said that one of his palmed
balls had slipped out of his hand, and rolled accross the table.)
It made me wonder what the people who had been rejected had done.
I stayed and watched the close-up performance by Mr. Turner, and
headed back to Riverside to write you all this message.
Again, thanks to all of you for your helpful insights. I look
forward to seeing you at the Castle.
Enjoy!
Kevin

Re: CASTLE AUDITION

Philip,
The entire reasoning behind my routine was to show as many
different sleights as was possible. I had been told (accuratly
it seems) that the judges are looking for a knowledge of magic.
A more spectacular show could have been had by giving Hollywood
Magic some money and walking away with some self-working tricks.
So don't. Come up with good, strong sleights.
I didn't realize that the tables are set up for sitting-down
close-up. I can't see giving a decent showing of stage magic.
Assuming any consistancy, I would practice sitting at a table
with several people on the other side. I had to twist in strange
angles sometimes so that a judge wasn't getting a view of what I
was doing.
The only advice I would give is to KNOW your routine. The first
half-dozen guys who came back from auditions talked about how
they had screwed up tricks. Several of them didn't make it.
Have you ever been to the castle? If you would like to go, just
tell me so, and I'll meet you down there sometime.

Re: JARROW

Emil Jarrow was Jewish, and I think his family background was German.
The confusion about his being "Dutch" has to do with the style of act
he did in vaudeville, back in the early part of this century. At that
time there was a standard style of comedy, in which the performer
played the part of a confused immigrant with a heavy accent whose
English was filled with silly mistakes. This was, I'm sorry to tell
you, called a "Dutchman" act. And that is why Dai refers to him this
way. As far as I know, Jarrow had no Dutch roots.

Re: MANSION MAGIC

Well, another meeting of the Mansion Associates, a small group of
performers here in the bay area. In attendence were Ted Maschel, fire

James Hamilton, Bill Okal, Mark Hovsepian, and yours truly. The
meetings are very casual and last nights round table was a presentation
by James on the Herrmans. And as you may or may not know, he holds some
of the most facinating on the magicians of the late 1800's. The topics
change frequently and the space we are in as a meeting spot is
equivilent to the "Irma Room" at the Castle. If you have never been to
the Mansion Hotel, It is definatly worth the stay in S.F. the
propriator, Robert Pritikin, also hosts a parlor show featuring music,
MAGIC, and Mr. Pritikin is also a "sawest". and does a small concert
for the guests in attendance. The hotel is a B&B. and is decorated with
Bufano sculpters and other objects d'art. (RECCOMMENDED) If you ever
get to the bay area, the meetings are the first and third Mondays and
attendance varies from meeting to meeting. leave me e-mail for more

Re: CASTLE AUDITION

Thank you, Kevin. I find it difficult to imagine, however, anything
spectacular about self-working tricks from Hollywood Magic. I think
your advice of "know your routine" is very good and much forgot. My own
tastes in magic performance concern stories and lessons. In other
words, I am less inclined to just do routines: trick after trick
without some linkage to each other. I guess I'm bizzare...hummm.

Thank you as well for the invitation. I have several friends who are

on the offer sometime (oops, another nasty typo).
All the best,

Re: CASTLE AUDITION

Sure - I did not have as well developed a "story line" as I might have
liked, but my first three effects were "connected" in a reasonably
plausable manner. As a matter of fact, under most ordinary conditions,
I still use the same portions of the routine with some modifications as
a part of my present routine.

Basically, I did an effect (in the case of the Castle, it was one I had
developed specifically for the audition - it was something too bold and
too oriented toward magi to ever do with a lay audience). Then I said,
"I got that effect from the Magician's Mail Order Service. Would you
like to see how that works?" which was a segue to a second effect in
which a specific bill was placed into a "mailbox," only to vanish and
reappear in a sealed envelope in my wallet. The bill production then
segued into a second card effect. The card to currency to card
transition allowed me to do a deck switch and a coin load and I went
from the second card effect to a coin effect. At that point my neat
patter disolved from a consistent story line and I would have used the
same coins to go into a coin effect somewhat similar to matrix (this
was my "sweat point" by the way - I HATED this effect and was very
nervous about it, but it was a "killer") and just before I was to start
it, they cut me off! Like Kevin said, I could have kissed the members
of the committee at that point!

Er, Scott - I don't know what that was, or what you were testing, but
I don't think it yielded the results you may have expected! With your
permission, I will delete it!

Philip,
I would have agreed (all right, I still agree) with your
assesment of self-working tricks from Hollywood magic, but am
amazed at the number of profesional magicians I see doing them.
I guess we're both bizarre. Or is that Jerry?
Enjoy!
Kevin

Here Here!!!!! Let the pig be gone. Yes, I "do lunch" most every
Friday and usually catch all the acts. Usually Monday nights (less of
the bodies to dodge). I am going to be taking a group down to catch
the palace show this Sunday night. Congrats again. MIKE

Re: JUGGLERS

Turned on the T.V. last Friday night and caught a show called THE BEST
OF THE WORST. Never guess who was on? The two guys you hired for
the SAM banquet last year. The short one balanced a "running"
lawnmower on his chin and the tall one threw veggies into the spinning
blade. It was stupid. But hey, they got paid and a network spot.
Thought you might get a kick out of knowing about their appearance.
HOw's tricks? Give me a shout when you get a chance. MIKE.

Re: JUGGLERS

Would liked to have seen those 2 guys.
Saw about 5 minutes of The Mad Magician on cable last night, with
Vincent Price. Never saw it before. He use his Sawing a Lady in Half
Table, and cuts a guys head off, puts the head in a black doctor-type
bag. Before he can get rid of it, a visitor comes with the same type
bag, and leaves with the wrong one. So the gal visitor goes traveling
around town with a head in the bag.
Well I guess a little, no forget it.
Off to Vegas Thurs. for the Consum. Elec. show, and then the tables.
See you a week from Fri for lunch, maybe.

A packet of prestidigitators or even a talon of technicians might be
considered as well.

Re: URI GELLER

Community theatre is an excellent place to learn stagecraft and
performance techniques. Since it is mostly volunteer, it is not as
costly money wise as professional training and the pressure can also
be a bit more relaxed. There is still a large time committment.

Re: URI GELLER

I am sure there are professional theater group/classes. The benefit
of the community theatre groups is you don't have to pay to belong
and participate yet one often finds directors that are quite good
and who are excellent teachers.

I don't know if Joe has a Lion's Head Award that would be suitable
for you. Howsomever, I understand that Tabby has donated a slightly
used glass eyeball to Joe to be used for a new award called the "Oh
Now I see my way clearly" trophy.

"Feckled" folks? Some of 'em might take exception to that.

The Leprechauns would fit in OK. Nathan swears that "Lucky the
Leprechaun" (tm - General Foods) comes by our house to shower in our
guest bathroom.

I understand about the committment to amateur theater. Makes me wonder
if I want to be committed.
