My rule of thumb back in New York was only to work with a person who had taught for a while to favorable response and -- more importantly -- WAS A PRO ACTOR, whose work I could see. If so, it will probably be held in the Hat and Hare room down in the basement (not the "Museum Room"). The stage is one of the classic green tables and the lighting is very well directed onto the table. I'm not sure, but I think there is a dimmer that can be found at the bottom of the fireplace if you need it. Generally, they have the folks waiting for the audition assemble at the table just before the aisle leading to the close-up room. Then they call you downstairs one at a time. Pete Biro's picture is on the wall in the stairwell going down, so you can give it a "good luck" tap on the way in. One more thing - they will come back to the table up near close-up after everyone has auditioned and will take those who made it back downstairs. BUT, if they cut you off before your routine is finished, you can figure YOU ARE IN. If there are a lot of auditions, they may do that. If not, they may let you run the full set. Flashing to me shows that the person isn't taking care of the angles or is trying something they shouldn't be showing in public yet. For example, doing a double lift and having the cards jogged apart is a 'flash' to me. A double lift is supposed to be 2 cards shown as one, but if I see that they are really 2 it ruins the whole effect. . I may be able to detect the 'when' of a move, but not the 'what',that is still magic to me. Milt said, "The artist will be taking the sculture back, to the junkyard where it belongs, in March. We will be redoing the landscaping in front of the castle to make it more compatible with the Victorian theme". . He gave a tour of the new area and the access problem has been solved there is a stairway just opposite the entryway to the parlour (a door on the left) that will be enclosed and will give access to a foyer and the W.C. Fields bar. There is a 60 seat theatre with rear project ion TV as well as normal front projection film capability. . I'm pleased to announce that LITTLE EGYPT CARD TRICKS, a book I've been working on for the past year, is completed and ready for shipment. Subtitled "Object Lessons in Personalized Card Magic," the book will be advertised as "An unusual collection of commercial card presentations and diverse advice." Also, it will be noted that it "Includes the Last Word Card Stab, a stunning right-through-the-deck card stab." Little Egypt, by the way, is the part of southern Illinois in which I grew up. Physically, it is 8 1/2 by 11, 122 pages, comb bound (sorry, Pete). Special Canadian edition available on red paper. It contains 10 card trick presentations, 9 essays, 8 rules to make your magic more effective, and a bibliography. The foreword is by Mike Rogers. The price tag is $22 plus $3 shipping. For MAGIC! members only, skip the shipping charge. Beyond these statistics, I won't comment. Review copies went out this morning to the principal reviewers. Meanwhile, my wife would love to see all the copies outta here. If anyone is interested, and you can't think of anything to buy until Pete's linking ring opus comes out, the address is 1639 Sycamore Court, Bloomington, IN 47401. I apologize for this blatant commercial message, but I promised the few who knew of this venture that MAGIC! would be the first to know, and I've tried to stick enough into this one message so that we won't have to belabor the subject in future messages. -- Steve Bryant Msg #30755 Dated 18:05:09 01-04-92 -> 30775 From: STEVE BRYANT To: DAVID LICHTMAN (X) Re: IS MAGIC DEAD? The two are connected but not the same thing -- thus what the Board says about what goes on IN the Castle, as it relates to the organization of the Academy, is usually followed -- but the Castle itself is a separate entity and -- at least as I understand it -- the Board can make recommendations regarding the Castle but does not have any say in the day-to-day operation. Their option, if they came to loggerheads with the Castle, would be to go elsewhere -- not a very probable or realistic option. Again, all this is my impression of how things work, and should be no way considered to be the final word. Second, let me say that I have never been so nervous in my life. I guess I misheard what Bill Cosko said as far as the time. I was there at 6:45 and found out I wasn't supposed to be there until 7:15. Even if I had arrived at 7:15, I would have had a heck of a wait. They didn't actually start auditioning until after 8:00. I saw a gentleman who was waiting to audition do some great routines. He was going on and on about the audition process. When asked how he knew so much about it, he said that he had auditioned a couple of months earlier, and had been rejected. Gulp. There were about 17 people auditioning. So many people, in fact, that there were two committees judging. The process was still horribly slow. About half-way through, I was called. There were three people on my judging committee. I don't remember their names, but they were quite friendly and supportive. They asked me about my renewed interest in magic, and I mentioned MAGIC! BBS. One judge perked right up, "Oh, yes, I know about that." she said. The only thing that surprised me about the opening interview was the fact that they kept saying "You've never taken magic lessons? No magic lessons at all?" I thought "well, heck, I guess this is a blow-out." I did my first routine. No problem. I was shaking, but not to the point where it detracted from the performance. My ad-libs were ad-libing, and my mouth wasn't letting me down. Everything went quite well until I got about 6 or 7 minutes in. I suddenly drew a blank. Nothing. I don't think I could have told you my name if I had been asked. I have NEVER drawn a blank during a performance before. So, while I was getting ready to do 4 or 5 minutes of impromptu, one judge looks to the other two and says "I think we've seen enough." Talk about timing. I could have kissed him. I went upstairs to await the decision, and lo and behold Richard Turner was performing the close up room tonight, and he was at the main bar. I introduced myself to tell him how great I thought his video was, and he invited me to join him. He gave me a mini-lesson at the bar, and was an extraordinarily congenial person. After my conversation with Richard Turner, someone came up and asked if there were any applicants in the room. A number of us spoke up, and we were escorted downstairs. Bill Cosko addressed us by telling us we owed him money. And thus, I find out that I am one of the newest members of the Magic Castle. Of the original 17 applicants, 11 were passed. Some of the people who passed had gone on and on about how badly they had blown the audition. (One fellow said that one of his palmed balls had slipped out of his hand, and rolled accross the table.) It made me wonder what the people who had been rejected had done. I stayed and watched the close-up performance by Mr. Turner, and headed back to Riverside to write you all this message. Again, thanks to all of you for your helpful insights. I look forward to seeing you at the Castle. Enjoy! I had been told (accuratly it seems) that the judges are looking for a knowledge of magic. A more spectacular show could have been had by giving Hollywood Magic some money and walking away with some self-working tricks. So don't. Come up with good, strong sleights. I didn't realize that the tables are set up for sitting-down close-up. I can't see giving a decent showing of stage magic. Assuming any consistancy, I would practice sitting at a table with several people on the other side. I had to twist in strange angles sometimes so that a judge wasn't getting a view of what I was doing. The only advice I would give is to KNOW your routine. The first half-dozen guys who came back from auditions talked about how they had screwed up tricks. Several of them didn't make it. Have you ever been to the castle? If you would like to go, just tell me so, and I'll meet you down there sometime. Enjoy! The confusion about his being "Dutch" has to do with the style of act he did in vaudeville, back in the early part of this century. At that time there was a standard style of comedy, in which the performer played the part of a confused immigrant with a heavy accent whose English was filled with silly mistakes. This was, I'm sorry to tell you, called a "Dutchman" act. And that is why Dai refers to him this way. As far as I know, Jarrow had no Dutch roots. And as you may or may not know, he holds some of the most facinating on the magicians of the late 1800's. The topics change frequently and the space we are in as a meeting spot is equivilent to the "Irma Room" at the Castle. If you have never been to the Mansion Hotel, It is definatly worth the stay in S.F. the propriator, Robert Pritikin, also hosts a parlor show featuring music, MAGIC, and Mr. Pritikin is also a "sawest". and does a small concert for the guests in attendance. The hotel is a B&B. and is decorated with Bufano sculpters and other objects d'art. (RECCOMMENDED) If you ever get to the bay area, the meetings are the first and third Mondays and attendance varies from meeting to meeting. leave me e-mail for more info. Will have to get to San Francisco sometime - preferably in the Summer (you know, that one unusual Friday afternoon in August?). Msg #30959 Dated 22:05:33 01-07-92 30932 <--> 30960 From: PHILIP HOPBELL To: KEVIN E CURTIN (X) Re: CASTLE AUDITION Thank you, Kevin. I find it difficult to imagine, however, anything spectacular about self-working tricks from Hollywood Magic. I think your advice of "know your routine" is very good and much forgot. My own tastes in magic performance concern stories and lessons. In other words, I am less inclined to just do routines: trick after trick without some linkage to each other. I guess I'm bizzare...hummm. Thank you as well for the invitation. I have several friends who are members and they, generally, get me in. But I'd be gald to take you up on the offer sometime (oops, another nasty typo). All the best, Philip Msg #30960 Dated 22:21:16 01-07-92 30949 <--> 30966 From: PHILIP HOPBELL To: DAVID LICHTMAN (SYSOP) (X) Re: CASTLE AUDITION Great! care to share the generals or the specifics with me? Msg #30966 Dated 23:11:53 01-07-92 30960 <--> 30969 From: DAVID LICHTMAN (Sysop) To: PHILIP HOPBELL (X) Re: CASTLE AUDITION Sure - I did not have as well developed a "story line" as I might have liked, but my first three effects were "connected" in a reasonably plausable manner. As a matter of fact, under most ordinary conditions, I still use the same portions of the routine with some modifications as a part of my present routine. Basically, I did an effect (in the case of the Castle, it was one I had developed specifically for the audition - it was something too bold and too oriented toward magi to ever do with a lay audience). Then I said, "I got that effect from the Magician's Mail Order Service. Would you like to see how that works?" which was a segue to a second effect in which a specific bill was placed into a "mailbox," only to vanish and reappear in a sealed envelope in my wallet. The bill production then segued into a second card effect. The card to currency to card transition allowed me to do a deck switch and a coin load and I went from the second card effect to a coin effect. At that point my neat patter disolved from a consistent story line and I would have used the same coins to go into a coin effect somewhat similar to matrix (this was my "sweat point" by the way - I HATED this effect and was very nervous about it, but it was a "killer") and just before I was to start it, they cut me off! Like Kevin said, I could have kissed the members of the committee at that point! I am going to be taking a group down to catch the palace show this Sunday night. Congrats again. Never guess who was on? The two guys you hired for the SAM banquet last year. The short one balanced a "running" lawnmower on his chin and the tall one threw veggies into the spinning blade. It was stupid. But hey, they got paid and a network spot. Thought you might get a kick out of knowing about their appearance. HOw's tricks? Give me a shout when you get a chance. MIKE. Saw about 5 minutes of The Mad Magician on cable last night, with Vincent Price. Never saw it before. He use his Sawing a Lady in Half Table, and cuts a guys head off, puts the head in a black doctor-type bag. Before he can get rid of it, a visitor comes with the same type bag, and leaves with the wrong one. So the gal visitor goes traveling around town with a head in the bag. Well I guess a little, no forget it. Off to Vegas Thurs. for the Consum. Elec. show, and then the tables. See you a week from Fri for lunch, maybe.
