Scouting around the ol' Gold Country is great fun. Lots to see, do and
discover. There are a few truly fantastic bed & breakfast inns around
the area...and a couple of surprisingly wonderful restaurants, too!
Glad you had a nice Christmas in Forestville....looking forward to
catching up with you next time our paths cross. Give my best to Tab.

The first time I did community theatre (and met my wife in the

would recommend everyone to try it at least once.
Enjoy!

Re: CASTLE AUDITION
Wayne,
What keeps amazing me is the number of people I'm encountering
who have tried and failed at the castle. If someone doesn't make
it the first time, that is not a failure. It is the people who
have tried once or twice, and given up. Perhaps a metaphor for
life can be drawn from all this, but not by me, and not now.
Thank you for the good wishes, and yes, the work that went into
creating the routine certainly adds to my elation now. If I see
you, I will certainly say "hi" and even buy you a drink if you
are so inclined. Thanks again!
Enjoy!

discussed on the phone...our thoughts ran along similar paths in

different effects we were working on. Happen to visit York and
Sheets and managed to work them into a discussion of the Bill Switch
using Klause's book as a vehicle (Scotty has done mucho work on the
switch) I then did your BDB switch and BLEW both Scotty and Bob

Re: GOODBYE PIG
Pig masks, noses, and other assorted swine or hog apparel is readily
available in the Washington, D.C. area. The Redskins offensive line
is known as the "Hogs" and fans in great numbers wear pig snouts and
other such things to games. There is even a trio of guys who dress
somewhat in drag and have front row fifty yard line seats who are
locally known as the "Hogettes". All wear pig snouts. As the
Redskins near their upcoming Super Bowl victory, such items become
all the more available.
I am sure you would also find such things in whatever town the
Arkansas Razorbacks reside.

I too like Burger's handling of Gypsy Thread. I like his style and I

Re: NEW BOOKS
Off the top of my head, here are the books from the past year which
jazzed me the most (in alphabetical order by author):
Eugene Burger - Strange Ceremonies
John Carney - Carneycopia
Michael Close - Workers 2
Alex Elmsley/Stephen Minch - Collected Works
Martin Gardner - Fractal Music, Hypercards and More
Robert Neale - Tricks of the Imagination
Juan Tamariz - Sonata
Michael Weber - Life Savers
I should mention that I have only had the chance to give the new Roger
Klause and Rene Lavand books a cursory look; both seem to be quite
good.
As for books from the past four years, I will name a few which stand
out, but I'm sure I will have forgotten to include several titles (as
I've probably overlooked a couple from 1991 that I'd want to include on
the above list):
Eugene Burger - The Experience of Magic
Stewart James/Lyons & Slaight - The First Fifty Years
Rene Lavand - Slow Motion Magic
Tony Shiels - The Cantrip Codex
Shigeo Takagi/Richard Kaufman - The Amazing Miracles
Juan Tamariz - The Magic Way
Dai Vernon/Stephen Minch - The Vernon Chronicles

Re: CASTLE AUDITION
re: "...if it is self-working SO WHAT?"
Oboy. , now I've got to explain a remark again.
The point I was trying to make is the same point you've been
making as long as I've been on this board.
Yes, it is possible for someone to take a self-working trick and
make it their own. To have an entertainment value far exceeding
anything the trick can generate on its own. But most people
don't. For the average performer (at least the ones I've seen)
they'll take the gizmo, and give, as nearly as possible, the
exact same speel that came with the trick. If the trick doesn't
come with its own shtick, the average performer will duplicate
the SALESMAN's delivery.
Yes, a self-working trick can be incredible. But there is a
drain on originality. If I come up with a self-working trick,
and use it, then I've come up with an effect. If I give you the
same self-working trick, and you modify the trick or the act,
then you've come up with something. Now I'm rambling, so I'll
sign off before I come completely unglued.
Enjoy!

Re: URI GELLER
Pete,
I've been thinking about your comment on how hard magicians work
on their acts. I don't know if you intended to get my cranium
going the way it has, but it's too late now. It's happened.
With community theatre, most of the work (the majority of the
time) has been done before the theatre even thinks about getting
into a production. The play has been written and re-written. It
has been performed for other audiences. A person can go in
knowing what works well and what doesn't. The community theatre
group only has to decide on its interpretation, and then work on
perfecting that interpretation.
My performances are, from what I can tell, much like your's in
that I don't believe in using the exact same words over and over.
I have confidence in my ability to entertain an audience without
having to recite the same lines. I have an outline that I cover,
and take it from there. Now I'm wondering if I'm just too lazy
to get together a "show" or if what I do is a better way for me
to perform.
Geez, the moral dilemmas you cause me.
Enjoy!

Re: CASTLE AUDITION
Jerry,
I agree totally. If I had to choose the number one reason for
those that I talked to getting rejected at the castle, it was
because they tried things over their heads. It is infinitaly
better to do the simplest sleight well, then to do the most
impressive sleight in the world badly. Even if one does the
sleight well, one has to do it so well that one doesn't even have
to think about it. It is amazing how much is conveyed to the
audience. You don't want them thinking, "Gosh, it sure slowed
down here" or "I wonder why he keeps slipping out of contact."
The idea is for them to think "My god! this man can do MAGIC!"
Enjoy!

Randy,
I wish that I would have learned theatre. That would have given me
a push into developing a stand up act. For the last 20 years I have

When I teach magic it is strictly close-up and I strongly stress the

Re: NASHVILLE
Thank you thank you thak you (rule of 3) to Tabby
Crabb for the first really great magic weekend of the
year. Hard to believe anyone could put together a
conclave so successful his first time out. Hardly
worth posting a review, as virtually everyone on MAGIC!
seemed to be there, but here are a few quick notes for
David and anyone else who missed it:
BEST MIRACLE: I should have my eyes put out. I have
SEEN the Billion Dollar Bill switch. I BELIEVE.
BEST NEWCOMER: Lupe, from Panama. Fabulous stage
presence and sense of humor. Really a clever, charming
young lady. She will be at the DMS.
MOST INTERESTING LECTURE: Geno Munari's lecture on
gambling cheats. I wish this could have gone on for
hours. Fascinating stuff, all new to me. By the way,
back in 1986, Don Lawton wrote in his column in NEW
LINES FROM LAWTON about what a nice guy Geno is.
Delightful to find out in person how true this is.
NICE TO PUT A FACE TO THE NAME: Neat to meet Jim Sisti.
Also had some clever and really USABLE stuff in his
lecture.
HOTTEST LECTURE: Mike Close! Yeah, the tricks in
WORKERS I AND II are great (I STILL don't understand
the toothpick through bill), but it was Michael's
fabulous interaction with the audience that made this
an evening to remember. He started with a hysterical
practical joke on Johnny Ace Palmer that sucked
everybody in, and built from there. (I'll let Biro or
someone else tip the joke.) Mike, and Max Maven the
next night, had the unenviable job of trying to be
interesting at what was roughly from 1:00 to 3:00 A.M.
my time. Both rose to that challenge magnificently.
PRIVATE TO CHARLIE RANDALL AND RICHARD HATCH: THANKS
for the business!
HOTTEST KID AWARD: Jake Harris. 14 years old, looks
12. This kid got chosen a lot as an onstage assistant.
Howie Schwarzman did a routine where he roughs the kid
up. Later in the evening Mike Close has him up.
Close: "What is your name?" Jake (perfect feigned
sincerity): "You aren't going to hit me, are you?"
Jake performed a beginner's cups and balls routine on
Saturday night. Kinda screwed it up. IT DIDN'T
MATTER. Great personality -- the audience was with him
all the way. Like James Garner says (and has built a
career on): "You've got to get them to like you.
After that, it doesn't matter what you do." I talked
to Jake some. His parents are divorced, and he spends
summers with his dad in Seattle. He was there
recently, and he asked for and got a job working behind
the counter at Micky Hades for next summer. Also has
arranged to take lessons from Stephen Minch. Smart
kid!
JUST LIKE BEING THERE AWARD: Geno performed his Las
Vegas lounge act. Lots of interaction with female
volunteers. Very funny. Big news to me: Geno SINGS
in the act. And gets away with it. I'm looking
forward to seeing this again in Vegas.
CUTEST ON STAGE ASSISTANT: Michelle, from Illusions in
Indianapolis. Geno used her for the bra trick and
couldn't have had a more perfect reaction. Michelle
was also very nice off stage. (I used her on stage
myself for a card stab, but it's pretty hard to follow
after someone has ripped her underwear off!)
BEST SHOPPING: My wife and daughter accompanied me to
Nashville and had the time of their lives hitting all
the malls. They said to "tell the guy in charge of
this thing" to let all the wives know that Nashville
has GREAT shopping. Apparently Bellevue Center was the
place to be, though I don't think there is any
merchandise in size 5 (my wife's) or whatever size my
daughter wears left. "Is he going to do this thing
again next year?" I said yes, I think so. "Good!"
Put next year on your calendar. These are only a few
quick impressions. I'm leaving LOTS out. But it was
really fun to get to hang out with everyone. Thanks
again, Tabby.
And write, don't call. I still have babies in my ears.
You had to be there.

Re: TRIUMPH, ONE STEP FURTHER
I haven't been on here much since Christmas. Santa was VERY
good to me this year and I got a lot of great magic books,
tapes and tricks added to my collection. I have a lot to get
through so I won't be able to participate as actively as I
used to. One of the tricks I learned was the Zarrow shuffle
and Vernon's Triumph routine. It is pretty standard stuff
for most magicians but I have always seen it done the same
way. It's great the way it is but I wanted to take it one
step further. Forgive me if this has been done before, I
just haven't seen it. Anyway, I like the response I get from
an audience when I do Vernon's Triumph. It seems wonderfully
incomprehensible to them that the entire deck can be shuffled
face up into face down and then be magically righted save for
the chosen card. Here's what I do to take this one step
further. I like to start with the deck in perfect sequence,
ace through king. If you can do a perfect faro shuffle it's
even better to have it set up so that three or four perfect
faro shuffles will leave you with a deck in perfect sequence.
(Expert Card Technique has tables that show how to set that
up) That way you can casually show the deck to be mixed
before you commence shuffling. I have a card chosen by
riffle method. That way when they say stop I can pick the
card stopped at myself, show it around and place it back
exactly where it came from. After shifting or double
undercutting it to the top I do several Zarrow shuffles and
false cuts retaining the deck in perfect order with the
selection on top. When I flip over the bottom half of the
deck to shuffle into the top half it is important not to
spread the face up part widely so the spectators see the set
up. I simply spread them in a semi circular fan so that most
of the white can be seen without the indices. A few visible
indices won't matter. Continue as usual and do the displays
showing how the deck is all mixed up. After reassembling the
deck notice the bottom card and cut to a king if one is not
showing. That is to say that if you do the ace through king
set up and the bottom card is a four that means the cards
beneath it are the ace, two and three. On top of the deck
are the five through king. You don't want the sequence to be
split so just cut off the required number of cards to the
top. After spreading the cards BACKS UP showing all but the
selection to have righted itself, turn the spread over
showing the deck to also be back in perfect sequence even
with the chosen card in the correct position.

Re: M A G I C (1:5)
Just got back from Borego Springs, where we picked up our motorhome
following the rebuilding of its transmission. There is a long story to
go with this, but too tired to tell it. Mentioned it because the
connection is back injury -- Anita (my wife) is beginning to recover
from the one she sustained leaping across the motorhome after Nathan,
our three year old who was "driving," released the gearshift lever and
the motorhome fell off the leveling blocks. I was not so seriously
injured as I didn't know what was going on (until it fell) since I was
in the bathroom at the time . . .
Anyway, hope your back is better and yes, I too enjoyed this month's
issue of M A G I C and Burger's article. No, I wasn't reading it when
the motorhome fell; I was reading Tamariz' The Magic Way at the time.

Glad Triumph works well for you. Have a comment I heard from Max
Maven. A well-known upper level mage was sitting with Vernon and a
few others and wanted to show the Professor HOW CLEANLY he could do
Triumph.
.
He proceeded to do it so clean and so smooth you would DIE for his
ability.... he looked at Vernon and said, "What do you think?"
.
Vernon said, "NO NO... you have it all wrong. Its ALL in the
presentation... you have to tell them how someone took the cards
and shuffled them into a MESS... (ETC) (READ THE BOOK)....
.
Poor Guy was DEFLATED on that one!!!

Hey... how can the guys in charge BRAG about possible the greatest
convention of the age (for its size).
.
SERIOUSLY... the people, the atmosphere, etc. COULD NOT MISS. The
Tabman has IT and IT is contagious! He knows what works. Will most
likely have to move it to a GIGANTIC hotel next time!!!
.
Mike Stratman, Kenny Klosterman and a whole slug of dudes from
TEXAS (over a 1,000 miles) rolled in unexpectedly and took good
car of us.
Kent Cummins, at the Brunch SURPRISED "EVERYONE" especially El Tab,
when he asked for the floor. (And someone gave it to him!!)
.
He presented the "FIRST ANNUAL Texas Dudes appreciation Awards"
(this in itself is rumored to be a taped show on the Nashville
Network Next year)....
.
THE AWARDS!!!! A sealed box of "Alley Cat" cat food... for "TABBY"
which when opened (it was sealed)... revealed a package of frozen
CRABMEAT... Get it? Tabby Crabb!!! YO!!!!
.
Next (Oh, it was also in honor of the theme... "RULE OF THREE"...
.
Mike Close got the tube of CLOSE UP toothpaste!!! He had left early,
and it will be presented to him postheumously (Max, Correct the
spelling for me please)... (Or when I see him at Illusions in May).
.
The final and most appreciated, and possibly semi-appropriate was
to Max Maven... and... YOU GUESSED IT... A life-time supply (for
Max) of M E O W M I X..... heheheheheheheheheh....
.
Oh, the Mike Close Practical Joke on Johnny ACE Palmer... You see,
Ace, as he is called by his friends.... had concluded the production
of the baby chicks... and figured they had put away properly.
.
When Close Commenced... Chirping could be heard (NOTE: I only say
this as somene known for melting teapots and cannot hear things in
his range __ I had to trust they were telling me the truth!!)
Anyway... Close started to work and suddenly ACE leaped to his feet
and ran onstage looking for what sounded like one of his chicks
.... HEHEHEHEHEHEHEH.... at the precise moment... Close brought
a toy bird out of his pocket and said... "Gee I didn't think these
things sounded THAT REAL!!"
.
It was more than KILLER!!!
.
OK, here is why NO LIVE REPORTS... We were having too good a time

Re: MUSIC CITY CONCLAVE
/
"What's conclave mean??"
"Look it up in the dictionary and take the first definition!" I
have experienced every emotion known to man over the past few
days. I have survived the experience of doing a meaningful event
solo and plan on the continuation of the Music City Conclave as
well as the possibility of doing a similar event in a western
city (with a hometown partner). / I had 26 dudes from town call
and reserve seats and not show (and not pay). I had guys drive in
from Texas and write me checks. I bought $7,000 worth of stock in
the company (how much I lost money wise) and got much, much more
back because I got the opportunity to find out who my friends
were (which is the greatest thing) since everybody has to wait
til I get some cash in the bank so they can run their checks.
Thanks guys, too bad you don't take American Express like the
hotel. / It was the HONEST convention. The guys from
Murfreesboro didn't show becasue they though Max was in league
with the devil - and Max says that he "hardly knows him. Just a
few mutual friends." The SYMPOSIUM PANEL was one of the payoff
parts for me. The panel of MAX MAVEN, MICHAEL CLOSE, RAY MERTZ,
JIM SISTI, TIM WENK with PETE BIRO hanging out to the corner of
the table closest to max being a moderator. I asked them to
consider a couple of questions and hoped for something meaningful
to happen and I feel it did. People spoke honestly with each
other and I let it run over by 50 minutes since Fr. Schemp, Scott
Humston, Jake Harris, and a couple others from the audience were
digging for the real human stuff and not wasting time talking
about how many "bad" books had beenpublished or some other "who
cares" sort of bs. Ray Mertz, who spent most of his time in the
bar wearing his Buffalo Bills sweater and playing the bud bowl
announced from the center symposium seat "You mean there's a W in
Twitty City?" Tim Wenk stayed pretty quiet til the end, Jim Sisti
(great comic wit!!!!) kept the discussion close to magic while
Michael Close and Max Maven spoke honestly and matter of factly
their thoughts and opinions on the subject matter at hand. I
heard in the rest room from a guy in the next stall that he
thought some of the guys on the panel were a "little brutal" on
the magicalumkin (I know Max, but Pete says the lumpkin are a
step down the evolutionary scale from lumpen). And I say, why
not. Somebody has to tell them how hard it really is to be a
magician. How you have to live it, eat it, breathe it, sleep it.
Never let off. Practice, practice, practice with a purpose. Maybe
I'll raise the price next year and keep the riff raff out. /
Anyway, thanks everybody who participated from everywhere.
"....from the wheat fields waving to the your dancing waters." I
appreciate it. I will let others comment on the lecturers,
dealers, etc. I hope Charlie remembers to write the review for
Genii. I had hoped to sell the event out so I could fly both
Dante Larsen and David Lichtman out to Nashville, but with only
1/3 of the seats sold I didn't get to do this part. I am going to
start next month selling tickets for next years event. It is
invitation only for 150 seats. Guys who came this year get first
shot. I'll try to bring Dante out next year. He needs to come
over this way cause I only found a handfull of guys in the Great
Southeast who subscribe to Genii, only one or two in each club.
Dante, how about letting me be your agent in the Southeast??? /

Gary Darwin (of Darwin's Magic Club) does some classics with his

his performance has been so poor lately that Max wants nothing to do
with him! But I love the "we just have a few mutual friends" line.
Sure wish I coulda come. As it was, we were in Borego Springs bailin'
out our motorhome. Funny bit -- on the way home we stopped for lunch
and when we came out, the new thousand dollar tranny was LEAKING! I
tried to check it, but it was already cold, so I paniced and threw in
an extra quart of fluid so we could make it home. Finally figgured it
out -- you see, it was leaking because HE HAD OVERFILLED IT! Then I
added a quart... Only problem now seems to be that speedometer quit
after our dinner in San Dimas. Gotta get a big hammer, I guess.

although I would have to suggest replacement of your list of Lumpkins
with the noun "mass" or maybe even Lymphoma. Don't kwit so Kwick.

Yes...I know that Raider jackets, caps and tee shirts are big sellers
but I believe the fact they are black and silver has almost as much
to do with sales as the fact it is LA Raider stuff. Kids are really
into wearing black. Of course, Max was way ahead of this wearing
black trend and I don't recall his being a avid Raider fan.

Thank you for the listing of the books you regard as outstanding ones
for 1991 and the last four years. We are in mutually agreement on
most of them and there are some that I have not yet acquired. I am
not in the library so that I might refresh my aging brain, but I also
sense (as you apparently do) that there are a few others that might
warrant inclusion on the lists.
I appreciate your taking the time to share your selections.

I was just trying to rib you a little. I'm sure you broke new ground

good as I here it is will probably be the ONLY way it is done a few
years from now. (It takes a while for some of the lumpen to catch on to
best methods, style etc. what am I saying many of them never catch on)
THe bill switch is a great trick and still has a lot of life left in
it. Lets face it most of the public don't watch agic and most anything
you show them is new TO THEM. My fear is that it will be overdone as
your fave zombie. Too many amatuers will screw it up or the public will
again have the perception that magicians are interchangeable because
they all know only the same tricksSeveral recent books rehash someones
handling of the same effect. There is a place for that but I don't
think it is in $40.00 books. Here I am rambling again, sorry. Best to
you in the great switcheroo challenge. I look forward to seeing this

Re: NASHVILLE
Tabby,
Forgot to put in a vote of confidence for the hotel,
and especially for the area. Very nice rate, and I
loved the availability of the speedy elevators. (One
of the few negatives of the last two Invocationals in
Chicago was the slooooooow elevators.) Loved the
nearby food. We dined Friday evening at Chili's (one
of my favorite chains in San Diego) and Saturday night
at the Cooker, which was in walking distance. Great
selection both places, a very collegiate crowd, and
nice prices. Although I missed it, my wife and
daughter also loved the Parthenon, just across the
street (for those of you who weren't there, it was a
full-scale replica of THE Parthenon). Apparently an
interesting art exhibit going on inside, and a
permanent (I hope) 42-foot-tall statue of the goddess
Athena. Wish I could have seen it, but the place
wasn't open on Sunday, and we had to start the drive
back to Indiana.
Re the panel discussion, I was in the restroom
momentarily when the guy (whom I never saw) walked in
and said, "What a bunch of abrasive ***holes." I
thought this spoke well of the success of this segment.
Unless it was just a setup line by Max, I wish I could
have met the folks who didn't want to attend because
they thought Max was too Satanic. I have a card trick
just for such types. It really shakes some people up.
I'd tip it here, but Bascom Jones is sitting on it, and
it wouldn't be fair to him. Suffice it to say that
Tony Andruzzi liked it.
Anyway, I still have this great feeling from having had
such a perfect weekend. Thanks again.

The line about Maven's look was told to me by a member of the

after some gospel magic dude does this chemical magic trick
about sin and the blood of Jesus, it was just too much.

As far as I know, you are only responsible for the first $50 of

Yeah, I kinda figured that if you did the Card in Rat Trap enough you'd
be at least one finger short. And yeah, I know that you did get caught
by it once. And yeah, I also know about the time you actually caught
the right card with it.
Speaking of false fingers, etc. there was a story on the news today
about some guy who was alone on a farm and suffered a tractor accident
in which both his arms were cut off. He managed to walk/crawl about
1200 feet to the house, open the door with his teeth and dial 911 by
using a pencil in his mouth. They said that the docs were able to
reattach his arms and that he will have some ue of them, although he
probably won't be able to use his hands. Argh!

Whein Anaheim you MUST eat at Belle Isles on the corner of Harbor and
Chapman. Go for dessert but do not eat dinner first. Biggest portions
you will ever get. Pies are over 12 inches tall. Lots of goodies on
display in bakery cases. Make sure to see the breakfast menu also.
Texas breakfast is 12 eggs, 36 oz steak, stack of manhole cover pancakes

dress. Clse to the convention center and Disneyland. DO NOT MISS.

Re: NASHVILLE
Hectic it was, but that's partly what made it fun. If
you have only a short time, pack a lot in. If I had to
make any suggestions, it would be to put a strong time
limit on the lectures that precede other events. (In
other words, it isn't so important for the midnight
lecture.) This isn't to knock any lecturers -- indeed,
I wish Geno could have been on twice as long -- but
things seemed to get off schedule a bit. Also nice if
they could sell their stuff in next room, say, while
the next guy sets up.
Hard to fathom those Murfreesboro guys. I guess they
wouldn't have liked last year's (1990) Invocational,
which opened with guys in robes and hoods sacrificing a
virgin.
As to the hotel itself, I always like 24-hour food
service. I didn't check out how late the McDonald's
across the street stayed open. ANY hotel is a minor
letdown after a hotel, say, like the Tropicana, which
is a 24-hour party.
Way off the subject, but did you and everyone note that
an NCAA basketball game was played a couple of nights
ago with a score of 258-141??? How would you like to
score 141 points and still get beaten by 117? ("How
did you guys win?" "Defense!") Actually, the losers
were quoted as saying they enjoyed being a part of
something like that. Only 7 foul shots in the game.

RE: Glitch in IMP,(no...I'm not the FREAK, but will I do?)
Pete, I've followed some of your comments on your ASPECT file.
Did you by any chance, end up with a WAITQUIET statement? If so,
be sure to include FOREVER after the wait period. Procomm uses a
fail-safe where if it doesn't see quiet for fifteen seconds or
so, it ignores the wait and proceeds to the next line. It bit me
too until I figured it out. Should read "WAITQUIET 3 FOREVER".
Hope this helps.
As for Music City, sounds like everyone had a GREAT time! Can

1992 operating capital to show up next week. Plans are to build
the new shop incorporating a new metal lathe, saw and milling
machine as well as larger wood saw, lathe, joiner/miller and some
other shoppy stuff. Gloria talked me into waiting on the ranch
thing and invest the money in the Conjurors' Woodworks (how many
wives would do this???) and try to go to as many conventions as
possible to promote our shop craft so I guess I'll be working for
a while longer. We were talking about coin ladders, well Tommy

A great loss to the World of Magic. Thanks to Geno Munari, I had a
chance to have an extended lunch with Jimmy a couple of years ago. The
attack (for those who don't know, he was mugged and badly beaten; he
said, "Why did they have to beat an old man? I would have given them
the money.") had left him with a great deal of chronic pain, but he was
still incredible. He did miracles throughout lunch and Geno kept
saying, "Hey, why don't you show him the good stuff." A light has gone

Re: ANOTHER LOSS...
I have some more sad news for the magic community. On Tuesday night,
H. Adrian Smith passed away. Although his name is not as widely
recognized as Jimmy Grippo, his accomplishments and contributions to
magic would rate among the highest of any. Smith was National President
of the Society of American Magicians in 1940, and followed that by
being elected National President of the International Brotherhood of
Magicians in 1948. At the time of his death he was the Dean of the
SAM. A really good insite to tis man can be found in the July 1948
issue of the Linking Ring, article on page 23 entitled "A GUY NAMED
SMITH". He complied a very large magic library, and has left his
etate to Brown University, from which he graduated in 1930. In 1948
his book collection was described as "one of the finest private
collections of magic books to be found anywhere in the world." Funeral
services 10AM Friday, January 17th, 1992, Butterfield Funeral Home,
500 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island (funeral home #
401-461-0151). A meeting has been set up with a representative of
Brown University by Charles Harrison, Smith's executor, to insure that
Smith's wish that the library be made available to all magicians for
research/reading is carried out.
Special Note to all SAM presidents/secretaries..... if time and
local assembly budget permits you might want to send flowers to funeral
in name of your local assembly.
.
