I saw the Video Toaster last year running on an Amiga. Really
impressed. Amiga really found a niche. Saw the ads for Word 5.0 and I
think I'm going to upgrade next week. Would like to get a 3-D modeling
program, but heard that they take a lot of processing time (and $). Did
you get to see the Video Spigot from SuperMac? I've read that it has
some of the capabilities of the Toaster. Spigots, toasters...looks like
the Mac is becoming the "appliance" that Steve Jobs envisioned it to
be. I live in Alhambra (just south of Pasadena) and work in Chatsworth
(San Fernando Valley). Where are you from?

Re: VIVA LAS VEGAS

Well here it is. The report on one of the best trips I've ever had to
L.V. It all started with a 3 a.m. call from Lance Burton. He was
rehearsing a couple of new illusions for the show. (One includes an
Elvis sighting) He invited myself and a friend over for the eight
o'clock Sunday show. Well that's all it took. The next day I was
Vegas bound. Made it there in under four hours. I mean there was no
traffic. Once there checked into the hotel and decided to run over and
chat with Mr. Munari. He was out of town. However I was informed he
would be around for the late show. Next I was off to the RIO where Ed
Alonzo is filling in for the next three weeks. Found out he would not
be in until the next night and headed back to the room to get dressed.
Then off to see Lance's show. I was greeted by his publisist who said
he wanted me and my guest to come back stage after the show. While
waiting for the show to begin. I ran into and had a nice chat with
Robert Baxt. The show was great. After I had dinner with Lance and
his guest star Michael Goudou(sp). I stayed only about 30 because I
knew they might need to check notes about the early show. Then we were
off to Geno's. Walking in after the show. Who should I find there but
Mr. Marvin Stern. Spoke with him and Geno. also meet Whinnie Paul
(Johhny;'s wife) and Gary Darwin. Had a nice chat with all. And
Marvin gave me pointers on a card move or two. Next day I helped Ed
Alonzo unpack and rehearse. Then later with Robert and his friend
Jamie Porter, we all attended the early show. Ed was the star and did
a great job. After the show we all had a nice meal and I had to head
back to L.A. Some of us have to work. But before i left town I spoke
with Vince carmen, who is at Circus, Circus. Also in town are Joseph
at The Flamingo. Shimada at Riviera. S and R at the Mirage. Melinda
at Sahara. Kirby Van Birch at Alladian. All the great guys at Geno's
in the Hotel Continental. And assorted others. Magic is doing great
in Vegas. Everyone should try and get over there. Rooms on
weeknights,
Sun - Thur are only $20.00 at most hotels. And food is cheap. It's a
great time to go. I am back there on Super Bowl weekend. Gonna see S
and R. Ed Alonzo again, Melinda and for sure a trip to Geno's show,
where i may just perform. It was a great trip. wish I could have
taken everyone on MAGIC along for wonderful time.

Re: RICK LITTLE

We saw the RL show at the Sands on Dec. 27th. He opened with a song
and then said " You may have heard about te comments made by my
ex-fiance. I was mad at the time that I wanted to burn down the house,
but now I have calmed down and only want to burn down half the house.
The half with her in it." He then continued, "these are the very
films so was talking about." Proceeded to show portion of a Kirk
Douglas movie "Lust for life." Secondly then a Gene Wilder film where
he apparently fell in love with a sheep. We dont recall him ever
mentioning M by name.
his show did not even close to the entertainment v alue of M's.
His show did not contain anything thatlooked of recent development.
Appeared to have gathered old material that had not been updated.

Since i am new to this computer stuff. I really was suprised at what

Re: TRIUMPH, 2 STEPS FURTHER

In case anyone is interested in the Triumph version I posted. (Look
back on the thread "Triumph, one step further") If you do the trick the
way I do you end up with the deck in perfect suit sequence ace through
king. If you do two Faro shuffles you will then wind up with the four
aces on the top of the deck to go into your favorite (If you have one!)
four ace routine or effect. I wouldn't just turn them over, as the
situation is ripe for a much stronger effect. You could cut to the
aces as Gary Ouellet shows in "Close-up Illusions" or have the
spectator cut to the aces by any of several methods. I know the four
ace effect has been beaten to pieces in magic literature, but doing it
ONCE for a layman in an imaginative way can have a powerful effect.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on how you would proceed after
getting the four aces to the top of the deck?

Re: MAC HELP

I sold my Mac Plus last year and bought an LC. I started with an Atari
800, moved to an Apple IIe, then got my Mac 128. I upgraded the Mac 128
to a Mac Plus. I now use the LC and a Powerbook 140 4/40, Syquest 44 mb
removable drive, and Sony 1304 13" multisync monitor. At work, I use a
Mac IIci w/105 MB hard disk, 20 MB RAM, 19" Radius 24-bit color
monitor. I do a lot of desktop publishing since I work in the Marketing
department for a small manufacturer/developer. I am also starting to
freelance at home. As for magic, my other passion, I am a member of the
Magic Castle. I perform strolling magic at corporate parties, studio
premiere parties, stuff like that. Last thing I did was the "Hook"
premiere party--what a blast. I'm not that good, but I do a lot of very
commercial stuff, and strolling is just so easy. Luckily, I have a good
friend who owns a party planning company with great connections. I try
to stay away from kids parties (too much stress!), but am going to do
something for a friend's six-year-old birthday party this Sunday.
Any advice? I don't think that three card monte will impress them.

Precisely what I was thinking -- although I liked your idea of going to

Re: LUNCH FOR BIRO

How's it going, buddy? Haven't heard from you in a while, so thougfht
(that's thought) I would give you a shout. Have bend looking at metal
for the slides of the "ladder" Different sizes and thicknesses make
different sounds. Appears that brass is the best all around metal to
use. I am going to have them cut by Tony Stratton (he made the hooks
for HOOK). He does great work. I think you'll like the results. When
might we get started on the rest of the ladder. The wood part. Will
wait to hear when you have spare time. Know you have been moving
things and getting settled. Hope to hear something soon.
Had a great lunch at the Castle. Peate was there as well as david
L. Burt Carpenter, Kevin Curtain and I ran into Robert Baxt and Norm
Neilson (my hero). A good show in the Palace O' Mystery. Joe Given
and Mitch Williams. Wish you could have been there. Talk at ya later.

Re: LUNCH FOR BIRO

Hi Mike:
Wish I could of joined ya'll today also. You were hanging out with
a couple of my good friends. It would of been great to have been
there. I was thinking about it this morning, imagining if money were
no object I would have hopped a jet to LA this morning and dropped
by the lunch and had some hanging out time too, but I'm scuffling
these days and will have to be the magic gad about some other day.
I would imagine that we should wait til you have the blades done
befopre we do any woodwork. We've just about solidified plans for
the new shop and are awaiting word from the bankers as to when we
get the check. Plans also call for adding metal working tools to the
wood stuff. We have a back log of projects to start on so there's
plenty to do when we get it going. Jet over to Nashville one day for
lunch at Mack's.

Re: BIRO IS COMING TO MC

While we all had Biro for lunch, Biro had a rather eclectic lunch. He
was down at the other end of the table, but it looked like turkey and
brocolli surmounted with a blueberry blintze. Even he made the comment
that he was having "a strange combination." The Brunch at the Castle
is quite good, with something for everyone. They have someone standing
by to make omlettes, they have Eggs Benedict, enchiladas, pasta, and a
carving board with ham, turkey and roast beef. There are hot dogs for
the kids, a salad bar with greens for the rabbits, and, rumor has it,
there is even a supply of Meow Mix for those who have cats as their
familiars.

The Biro bragged on and on about how terrific the MCCM had been,
regaling us with stories of the superb lectures by Max and Geno and
what Mike Close did to Johnny Ace, both with his squeeking toy and with
the "Rule of Three."

We got to see THE BOOK. It is MAGNIFICENT. He has really managed to
draw together the complete history of the Rings along with virtually
all of the routines ever done with them! Really, truly, he has done an
incredible job! Beautiful, simply beautiful.

He also showed us "Part Two" of his Billion Dollar Bill Switch. He's
saving Part One for the DMS Shoot Out. It is V-E-R-Y G-O-O-D. I think
I am up to my derriere in alligators.

A few of us, Nathan included, also managed to chat with T. A. Waters
and Max Maven. Also, Robert Baxt (he made a balloon doggie for
Nathan). Also Terry Seabrooke, Leslie Manning, and Ellen Turkelrott.

Joe Givan did an excellent job in the Palace. He has terrific
presentation of some classic effects. Some really good thinking o how
to take something and turn it into something else. Mitch Williams was
also good.

Re: ENGLAND

Mystique is a show that has been playing in Blackpool,
England since 1988. Bruce Sandercock told me about it, and when
driving down from Scotland, I realized that I was only about 30-40km
from Blackpool. So my wife and I detoured and spent several days
there.
Pete, are you in charge of the train to SLC? I must have missed most
of the info on the trip. I plan on flying in a few days early, renting
a car and seeing the sights. But in order to fly back July 4th
weekend, I guess I should be making reservations soon.
Sooo, what's the scoop on the train? I would love to see you get the
card on the outside of the window. You probably hang Nathan out the
window and have him slap the card on.

Pete it was good to see you again. Wish we could have had more time. I
did not get to see the entire bill switch because of the show etc. but
what I saw (part 2)was significantly different from all other bill
switches. My previous comments were a concern that the audience would
just see another switch that looked to them like all other versions. I
think your method would be percieved totally different by the audience
as the PRESENTATION is not at all the same as the others. great going.

Sorry, but at present will not be at DMS (went to Tabby's show in

work in the time nor the travel $$$$.... Also will be at SAM National
convention which, because of a #$(*#$*# up is identical dates with IBM
this year (but will bet it won't happen again for a long time.....).
I had hoped to get to Hank Lee's Cape Cod affair again this year but
work has really gotten snowballed past month or so and just don't know
yet. Out of all of the conventions, seminars, etc., that I have
attended I felt the Cape Cod Conclave gave the most opportunity to
associate, visit with, and make personal friends among the attendees of
any of them. (Nashville was a lot like that too....). Hope to cross
paths with you again soon.

You're on the wrong track. If a performer gets tired of his/her act,
there is a serious problem. Performing magic for the sake of putting
food on the table is a bad case of having one's priorities out of
kilter.

And you're entirely wrong in speculating that Lance is tired of doing
his dove act.

Re: BILL SWITCH

I agree with what you are saying and I suspect that we have used
"tired" in a couple of different contexts. I did not mean tired in the
sense of being unable to project enthusiasm but certainly by the
1,000th time one has done something one looses a certain sense of
mystery about one's own performance.

I happen to like Lance's dove act, but I also feel that to some extent
it is a bit of a security blanket for him.

As to performing magic for food being a misplaced priority, I must tell
you that although I have seen you comment several times in a similar
manner I have yet to fully understand your view of this. Just like a
tomatoe cannot grow in sand, I suspect that art ripens and matures when
one is well fed. This is not to say that art cannot come from hunger,
but that it probably has a better chance when one has the time and
energy to create it.

Re: BILL SWITCH

You seem confused as to the difference between "projecting enthusiasm"
and actually having it.

I think your comment that Lance's dove act is a "security blanket" is
pure nonsense. The fact that Lance has expanded his repertoire into so
many new (and often risk-taking) areas makes it clear that he is not in
any need of any sort of "security blanket." That he continues to do the
dove sequence in his full show is, to me, proof that he maintains his
personal enthusiasm for it.

As to your comment that "art ripens and matures when one is well fed,"
it just ain't so. Mind you, I am in no way knocking success; I am quite
pleased that my art allows me to live comfortably, but the bottom line
is that if circumstances were to force me to endure financial
restrictions in order to stay true to my art -- a circumstance with
which I have my own share of past experience -- I would stick with my
art. Get it?

By the way, in reference to a previous discussion, you might be
interested in the following exchange from an interview with David
Cronenberg in the current _Rolling Stone_:

Q: Does the artist have any moral or social responsibility?

A: No. No. Still doesn't, after all these years. Still irresponsible,
after all these years. As a citizen, of course. As a parent, of
course. But as an artist, that's were the paradox is, your
responsibility is to be irresponsible.

Dear Max -

I do not believe that I am confused by the difference between
projecting enthusiasm and actually having it.

I guess I will either have to take your word for it, or will have to
call Lance and ask him how he feels about his dove act. Otherwise, I
don't think it is really my place to speculate upon it as doing so is
probably unfair to Lance.

Yes, your David Cronenberg quote does hark back to a previous
discussion. And Cronenberg is certainly entitled to his opinion. But
I regard it as rather shallow. To put it quite simply, I believe that
there is no right without responsibility. I believe that this is true
of artists as well as citizens and parents and that it is also true of
scientists and engineers, of medical practitioners and lawyers. Art is
no more nor no less elevated than are these other branches of human
endeavor and has no more nor no less right to ignore its
responsibilities.

Re: BILL SWITCH

Let me respond to this -- as one who has made his living at various
times as a stage actor, a magician and mentalist, and a writer, I
assure you that I enjoy getting well paid for what I do. I think,
however, that what Max was referring to was the notion of art as a way
of making money. It is nice when it happens -- but for anyone to go
into an art form as A WAY OF MAKING MONEY is a bit bizarre. It is also
destructive to one's self -- because if you are motivated by money, you
will try to figure out what the public wants and do that, rather than
grow as an artist. The hackworker tries to please the audience -- the
artist does what he or she wants and tries to get the audience to like
it. Sometimes they do -- and sometimes not.

for this thread to continue. Just what is it that you believe to be the
responsibilities of art?

Oooops, seems like we are off on an artistic theory discussion again.
And, much as I love same, we may soon have the other members
disenchanted.

I do agree that one should probably not enter the arts as a way of
making money. There are other avenues that are far more likely to
prove remunerative at substantially less risk.

"Hack," however, has always appealed to me as a pejorative appellation,
similar to any other slur, assigned by those who are less successful.
One could, for example, term Michelangelo a hack since a great deal of
his work was done under contract.

Re: BILL SWITCH

I would assume that an artist would like to have some rights to freedom
of expression, to "go where no man has gone before," etc. As to whom
he or she may be responsible to, that depends a great deal on a lot of
factors. Certainly, one does not have responsibility to government or
to the "status quo" unless one derives one's support fro such
entities.

"Is Mapplethorpe responsible to the Moral Majority?" That is dependent
upon Mapplethorpe and upon his (although he is now deceased, since you
have used him as an illustration, I will act as if he is an entity)
views and contractual obligations. Mapplethorpe may have felt, for
example, that he had a responsibility to enlighten the Moral Majority.
That, of course, would be an intrinsic responsibility that he might
have undertaken. If Mapplethorpe received government support for his
work, then that raises a different issue in that he would have
responsibility to his patron which, in that case, would include the
Moral Majority.

In retrospect it was perhaps inappropriate for me to speculate on Lance
Burton's mindset.

If you were an engineer, perhaps you would more clearly see how a
sleight change in your resistance could promote less heat and more
light. If you feel that my failure to perceive a difference between
art and engineering is due to either a lack of information or a
misapprehension on my part, why not take a moment or two to enlighten
me rather than assaulting me for holding such a view?

seemingly drop it in the bag with the restthen you tear the bag open
tossing all the boxes out over the audience and your shill has a
matching box with a buck in it the people scramble for the boxes and
you have your shill up on stage, and if you want to act like a real big

Re: TUESDAY AT THE CASTLE

I guess I should put up a review of the other night at the
Castle.
My problem, I think, is that I haven't seen enough BAD magic. So
consiquently, I judge too harshly. I wouldn't want to be
reviewed by me.
I didn't see either close-up show, so can't comment.
The early Parlour magician was Rick Wagner. I don' know whether
the audience had been drinking too much or if Mr. Wagner usually
has a problem with pacing, but Tuesda it was off. The handling
was EXCELLENT. I like seeing a magician do something so well,
that even though I know what he's doing, I can't see it. But the
show was filled with starts and stops.
The host for the parlour told us to b sure to see the Palace
show, as there was a guest appearance by someone. He wouldn't
say who, so I got my hopes up thinking it might be our own Mr.
Biro. While waiting in line for the Palace show, I met David,
and we went in and saw the show.
Terry Seabrooke is a pleasure to watch. He seems to enjoy
himself so much. I get a little uncomfortable with the insulting
remarks, but all in all, a very funny guy.
James Chantler Brown was next, and was a good entertainer,
although his handling was a little sloppy. I don't know if we
were too close, or what the problem was, but I saw his dove
before an appearance, and saw the gaff for a floating cigerette
routine. One of those magicians that laymen say "There! He did
something right there. Did you see it?"
Mystina was very sexy. I enjoyed the demonstration of what a
limber body can do. Again, I saw a dove before an appearance,
and a couple of other minor problems. It may have been a wierd
angle. She did some very nice illusions for those who weren't
distracted by the aforementioned limber body. She does a good
show.
Franz Harrary was the guest magician that the host had mentioned.
He was there to try out a new illusion. I was less than
impressed. From the moment he brought his prop onstage, I
imagine everyone in the audience thought there was going to be a
person appear in the empty box. Pete and I saw different shows,
so I didn't see the moving around that he did, but I did see
some. It was a long routine with sort of a let-down for a
climax. I kept expecting something unexpected. No such luck.
Terry Seabrooke did another small routine and needs to get a new
TT. His stands out like a sore thumb. More than anything, he is
an entertainer, so if anyone noticed, they didn't let it show.
It really was a good show.
After the Palace, David and I met up with Pete, and headed over
to see the late Parlour show.
Pete knew the gentleman, and we were given priority seating. I
like this.
Jim Lewis was the magician for the late Parlour show. I have no
compaints about his act. I thought he handled the parlour well,
and the audience well. I enjoy his catch phrase which was that
he was a "real" magician. No tricks, just magic. He did some
great illusions, and did them well. He has one illusion where
coins fall into a shot glass that has a water glass inverted over
it. Well done show.
Pete, David and I chatted for a while, then Pete had to go.
David and I chatted with Jim Lewis for a while, trying to
convince him that life means nothing without telecommunications.
We talked over some philosophies of magic, and finally headed on
out.
David and I decided to get something to eat, which was more
difficult than I had imagined it would be.
We were directed to the IHOP which was closed. We stopped at a
little coffee house that was closing as we pulled up, and finally
went over to Cantor's.
I enjoyed the evening very much, but, as mentioned earlier, the
real reason I went was to see Pete and David again.
Enjoy!

Watch out for Twiggy. Some years ago, Scarne appeared
on one of the afternoon talk shows -- Mike Douglas, if
memory serves. I wasn't impressed. He did an
extraordinary amount of bragging, then did an effect
where he tossed the deck into the air and snatched two
selected cards. Claimed no one else could do this.
The host then asked Twiggy, who was sitting at the
table with them, if she knew any card tricks. She said
yes, and then did the Four Robbers. An old trick, yes,
and well known to most, but she did it so well and so
charmingly that an unbiased audience would have
considered her the superior magician that afternoon.

An entertainer takes the audiences money in return for entertaining.

Re: ACES...

HELP!!!!
I will be appearing in the late close-up at the Castle Feb. 10-16, for
the week I will be needing an extraordinary amount of ace of hearts
(both red and blue back bicycle) for an effect called CARD VAMPIRE. I
called Hollywood Magic today wondering if they might have a one-way
forcing deck with the cards I need but no luck, and to top it off they
don't even know where they get the decks from. In the past the gimmick
decks I have bought have been made by California Card Co. I am
wondering if any of you might have a number or address for them or
maybe the same for MAGIC CITY. Hopefully I might be able to get in
touch with them and get the cards I need. If any of you have a large
amount of red or blue backed ace of hearts available, drop me a line so
that I can get in touch with you. Any help would be appreciated.
.
Normally I perform the effect without this much trouble but with 21
performances It gets a little rough getting those cards. I will be
needing around 25 of them (in pristine condition). CARD VAMPIRE is a
new effect that I have created and will be marketing...I won't divulge
the details, you'll just have go see the act (for those of you away
from LA I will post a description the week after the shows).
.
I look forward to seeing and meeting many of you that week...my show is
going to be a little...er...lets say strange. Plenty of magic but
rather off the wall...but then I wouldn't be the GEEKMAN.
.
Again, any help or suggestions would be appreciated...The One, The
Only...
                         THE GEEKMAN!!!

Re: IN A FLASH

Rick,
Actually, the flash paper I made works better than the commercial
stuff. I can control the thickness, the density and several
other components. I have always gotten as bright a flash. Mine
doesn't leave as much residue if you lay it on a surface and
ignite it. I was buying it for about $1.00 a sheet (about 8'' by
10'') and I can make it for about $.10 a sheet. I am also able
to dye the paper, or add chemicals to change the color of the
flash. I'm VERY happy.
Mike King recommended a book here on the board which had the
formula in it. I would point out however, that when I first
started making inquiries, the largest response I got was "Don't."
If I did not have a strong science background, I probably
wouldn't have. (Yeah, right.)

I would think that the roles required of the artist and the patron
would be pretty much up to whatever they mutually decide they are.

I think that in the case of government being the patron, the roles
become somewhat more complex in that the patron is spending someone
else's money. Frankly, I would prefer if neither party would engage in
such going's on.

Thank you, T A. I really do appreciate your stepping in with your
concepts of the definitions of each.

I don't know if I could be as concrete though. I think that both
fields are devoted to illuminating existence, each in its own way. I
think that if we were to elaborate on those definitions we would find
that both fields attempt to reach out and to strive for enrichment.

I really am not attempting to be silly or sophomoric here, nor am I
attempting to split semantic hairs. I do feel that many fields of
human endeavour, art included, are attempts to advance the human
spirit. I do not think that art is entitled to any special
consideration beyond other fields in which humans attempt to achieve
great things.

From newspaper accounts...the Bills seem to be doing themselves in
without any help from the Redskins. Of course, anything can happen
in any given NFL game.
The Washington area is absolutely gone nuts on the Super Bowl. All
the school kids are wearing Redskin stuff today as well as many adult
s. There is a huge rally planned for Tuesday (win or lose) when the
team has returnd. They had Redskin donuts (Burgundy and Gold icing)
in the bakery this morning when I stopped for a coffee on the way to
work. I read in the paper this morning that some fan is taking his
pet "hawg" named Rootien a special van to the superbowl. The
Hogettes left yesterday in a mobile home. Tickets are still availabl
e in the classifieds...only problem is that they cost $600 apiece and
you don't know if they are real or fake.

Read your message that you suppose that most performers
eventually get tired of doing their act, or at least that one
looses a certain sense of mystery about one's own performance.
Just got back from a show and have been doing one of my favorites
as usual. This trick I have been doing since I was 16 or 17.
Since it is a close-up trick I perform this several times an
evening. I think that over the years I must have done this thing
around 15.000 times, give or take a few thousands. And no, I am
not tired of it, I do not need to project enthousiasm, simply
because I AM enthousiastic about it.
The trick itself is not all that important, but it has become
something with which I can read and write so to speak, I can mold
my audience completely with this effect. In that sense it has
become a tool for me, a tool which allows me to do exactly what I
want with the audience. I am basically not doing the trick but I
am working with the audience. How can I get tired? The tool
(trick) remains basically the same, but the material (audience) I
work on with this tool is always different. When I see the faces,
when I see that I can make a potentially difficult spectator
still follow the interest path I have set out, when I have fun
with them, when the game is going smoothly, what more do I want.
There is nothing boring with being a master of your tools, in the
contrary. Being a master of the tools allows one to ENJOY more
the work you do with those tools. It is what you do with the
audience, and that does not bore me so far. Yes, it is true, this
effect does bring food on my table, but that is certainly not the
reason why I do this, I do it because it still continues to enjoy
me. Money should never be the reason, if it is money one wants,
it is stupid to do magic as a profession, keep it a hobby and go
in business, with the same amount of effort you'll make more
money in business.

Re: BILL SWITCH

Interesting. I'm not really qualified to address the purposes of
engineering, although I am going to ask an engineer friend for a
purpose as proclaimed by the profession.

Personally, I've frequently had trouble determining what the word
"better" means. I would assume that engineers might give lip service
to "safer," but, then again, the World would probably be safer without
electricity and the internal combustion engine.

I do agree that at least one purpose of art is to make life more
meaningful. While I agree that art can sometimes be dangerous, I don't
know that it is necessary that it be so; only that it have the latitude
to be.

Re: EXPERIENCE

Doug.
I don't understand what you are asking as far as procedures. Do
you want the recipe?
Time for a project depends on a couple of things. I have to let
a new batch of solution sit for about a day before I can use it.
If I have solution, it takes about forty-five minutes of soaking
time, then another twenty minutes fresh water rinse. Then a
three hour boiling. Then two one hour boilings. Then a
different solution soaking of about twenty minutes. And finally
a fresh water rinse, and hung up to dry.
I'm experimenting with changes in the procedure to see what
result changes I get.
Enjoy!
Kevin

It sounds as if you are using the procedures found in Mickey Hades
book. It does sound like you use a lot of time and water. I was
courious if more recent information was out in the literature. I would
suspect that one could neutralize the paper by using a baking soda
solution, but apparently not of someone would have tried it. I have
access to a PhD inorgainic chemist if you any questions. Besides I do
like to stump him once in a while.....my only caution is that Purdue
University had a real nice explosion, if explosions are nice, when the
lab tech tried to hurry up the dring of gun cotton by using an oven.
(dring...drying)...keep up the eports as i enjoy hearing of success
with chemistry....need a motto...like Better magic thru chemistry...

Re: BILL SWITCH

I understand that broadway shows have a complete going over with
the director after a month or so because of the cast going stale.
Some of the actors on the board might be able to confirm this.
.
I think that repetition has a built in boredom factor. One
keeps this at bay by the constant interaction with various
audiences and with a stepping back to look at the routine in
prvate to re-assess the beauty of it. _Beauty_ may not be the
correct word, but to look at it again as a director might.
.
Close-up workers have an easier time as they have the audience
reacting, and they can be seen. Stage performers are always
looking into darkness and that big black giant.

The "performers" I've seen that have the money motive first
go to a Mgic Shop and buy some tricks to "entertain" an
audience. They have no love for the art and consequently have no
desire to learn the fundamentals. This is probably the great
difference between magic andthe other entertainment arts - no
grounding in the fundamentals. Think of dancers, singers or even
football players without the fundamentals - nothing!

Re: BILL SWITCH

Of all the arts I've seen, the only one that places a high regard
on pleasing an audience is MAGIC. Music, dance, what have you,
seem to want to pull the audience up to the level of the
performer's vision. The performing magician in viewing an idea
will always ask if it is a commercial effect or a prorgam item. I
don't know why this is, and I may be wrong in my perception, so
it is up to further explanation.

Re: BILL SWITCH

This discussion has gone from somewhere to an artist's right to
self expression. Mapplethorpe or the artist with the crucifix
were not the people getting the money. The money was going to museums
displaying the art. Those receiving money directly, were performing
artists who might have some responsibility to the people
supplying the money. If there is an irresponsible party here it
might be the people on the committies who select the artists to
receive the money.
.
It should be remembered that opera, ballet and symphony
orchestras would find it hard to exist if it were not from the
support of the government and corporate sponsors. Those
interested in the popular such as Rock music might as well feel their
money is mis-spent.
.
Government support may be justified. The Canadian government
spent some money backing Doug Henning's desire for background
training. He learned from Vernon and Slydini, and both
influence are still seen in his performances. Money well spent
I'd say.

Jim Lewis is a fine performer and a great thinker. In Baltimore
he astonished me twice and then at a lecture later a third time.
After a lot of years in magic, this is not a minor feat. I had
little idea of what the hell he was doing. Yes, I saw clear-cut
effects but had no idea of the methods.

Re: ART

Kevin - I agree that taking money implies a certain
responsiblity. I'm thinking of Michelangelo who I understand had
to make certain revisions to satisfy the pope in painting the
chapel. We all seem to be hung up on the various arts. Painting
and similar arts should not be looked on in the same manner as
the lively arts such as theater performances. More of this at a
later time.
