Re: BILL SWITCH?
Arnaud,
Please forward this message to Tommy Wonder.
Tommy,
I absolutely agree that the artist must be free to do what he
wishes. A patron may set down restrictions, but should do so
before hand, and allow the artist to decide for himself whether
he can live with said restrictions.
But the whole matter takes on a different hue when the patron is
a government. I think that this is the only place where we have
a difference of oppinion. I'm not even REAL sure we have a
difference of oppinion here, as I'm not sure what I think of the
whole thing. If it were up to me, I would probably not give
those sorts of grants. Unfortunatly, this would not mean a tax
cut, but rather, that the money would go for something less
productive.
I am constantly amazed at what our government sees fit to spend
money on.
Enjoy!

The Magic of David Copperfield XIV is scheduled to air on March 31st at

And a comment on the Orson Wells effect:
"The Orson Wells bit was made (as far as we can tell by research) while
he was filming "The Amazing Ambersons," around 1942. Nina Himber
contacted John Gaughan, who gave her our number. We had the film
transferred from nitrate (not easy to do, most people won't touch
nitrate), all the while afraid it would dissolve before we got it

Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:
That is a good point you mention there. When you commission
someone, indeed it might be good to have a good relationship,
some form of communication, may be even inspiration. That is
however a different thing than thinking one has the right to
decide on artistic
judgments, those should ultimately be made only by the artist and
one has to have respect for that. On the other hand, if that does
not happen, and the artist produces the work grudgingly, the
artist should realize that that is not the way to go and should
in such a case return the assignment. That is also part of
artistic integrety. Because when the work is done
grudgingly, the result can never be of true value, it would be
kitsch at the most.

Legally one may have the right to do so(may be) but then of
course the name of the artist should also be removed from the
work, because it will
then no longer be the work the way the artist meant it to be.
But it remains a disgrace and a direct spit in the face of the
artist. Such people do not deserve anybody to make them anything,
they should make things themselves from the start, and not hire
artists. Artistically speaking these peoples are morons!

CY, are you really using a clip-on mike in close-up conditions?
To me it seems practical only on a theoretical level, but in
actual
practice I think your own voice is much more reliable than a
mike. Also in close-up situations an amplified voice makes the
whole thing more unnatural.
Like Pete said, we should get more professional help. In this
case I think it is a much better investment to get voice lessons
than to buy such a mike. For sure, a good trained voice can
surmount the
problem in close-up situatins.
Concerning Binarelli at Fism, no mike, no sound system whatsoever
would have solved the problem he was in. It was not so much a
matter of being heard, the audience could not concentrate on him
because of Tamariz working the other side of the room.

Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:
Yes you are right, one must be carefull, claiming artistic
freedom sounds nice and it is, but one cannot do that before one
is full
grown, before one knows exactly what one is doing and why. It is
very hard to attain that, it requires a lot of work and a very
honest way of looking at oneself all the time. It definately is
not an easy way out. My estimation is that may be 1 in a thousand
magicians ever attain that status. Most never come even close to
the point of claiming artistic freedom, simply because they
themselves do not know what the heck they are doing, are not full
grown
artistically, and do not take a hard honest look at themselves.
They live under a delusion about themselves, and so have no right
of
speaking about theirartistic claims. But even then, I must say,
if one does not have this status oneself, usually a buyer has
even less attained this status and so has even less right to
decide what the artist should do.

I think we are in basic agreement here, Tommy. The problems seldom
occur when both the patron and the artist have a bond of trust and
integrity. The problems occur when one or the other or both either
lack that bond or have a hidden agenda.
Gee, I think that is true about most of life (!), not just about
relationships between patrons and artists!

I tried Norton "Wipedisk" and copy11pc "Bulkerase", but neither
works. I'd like to format them as 1.4 so I can use them. I'd hate to

Re: FLOPPY DRIVE
I'm rather surprised that neither Norton Wipedisk nor CopyIIpc
Bulkerase was able to clear them. Are you by chance using DOS 5.0? If
so, it has a Format command that tries to preserve the existing format.
To override that (if you are using DOS 5.0) you need to add /U
(forward slash and the letter U) after the format command, so it would
look like:
FORMAT B: /U
If that is not the situation, aybe send me one of the diskettes and
maybe I'll see if I can somehow force it to format properly. If you do
send me one, please enclose a note reminding me to try formatting it -
I get a lot of diskettes in the mail!
Actually, I'm intrigued that you were able to format it to 1.2 in the
first place! I didn't know that could be done!

Re: MAGIC-NL
Data packets is OK, that's what makes PC-Pursuit work. The thing to
avoid is any service that requires some kind of special hardware and
lines at either end. Telenet said they could hook us up direct to the
entire global Telenet network -- for a mere $2,000 a month for their
"node" here at MAGIC! World Headquarters, and, of course, we would have
to pay for the minimum 16 dedicated lines.
Access to a packet switching network is find and dandy, if the person
in Europe or Asia can dial a local Telenet number and then somehow use
this DataCallPlus thing to connect directly to us.

Re: HOW...
Darn it Pete, its now 1:02 am, I just got back from the castle and
am sitting here reviewing msgs and I answered the blood letting ?
almost exactly the same as you did. I MUST be getting psychic.
.
Tonight I was showing Stan Lake my rope routine down in the Pub area
and had probably 30+ people jammed into the room. So I decided to try
out a new trick I been working on using ESP cards. It's a five card
handling Mike King showed me.
.
Just before I use the 'divining' wand to 'pick-up' the person's energ
y field I say move the cards around (the five cards are spread face
down on the table at this point, and I know the POSITION of the
thought of card). This guy does a garbage shuffle of the 5 cards AND
I HAVN'T THE FOGGIEST idea of which of the 5 he picked. Hell, I can't
stop now so I go for it, 1 out of five ! I miss the first time.
.
Now I'm really in the soup. So I say, 'I'm going to try and find your
card last' (odds now down to 1 in 4). Second card miss (odds now 1 in
3), third card miss (odds now even).
.
Bingo, fourth card a miss - I hit it ! I was more impressed than anyo
ne else in the room !
.
Now if I could only get psychic on lotto numbers.

because of the LAYOUT, STYLE, SERVICE, FOOD, AMBIANCE... I don't

Print copy of Bartlett's. To use the CD-ROM version you must own a

Re: BINARELLI
I think the ground rules for publishing adaptations are fairly well
established. In general, it's legitimate to publish a variation on
someone else's work if three criteria are met:
1) You have actually added something new.
2) You provide proper credit information.
3) By publishing your version you won't be killing sales of the
first guy.
Certainly the first two of these are easy to determine. The third does
sometimes move into a gray area where a udgment call is necessary, but
not all that often.

an aquisitive society which says that persons who buys some-

some artists have gone to court to defend their rights as
creators. It is an interesting problem. The owners, of course,

Re: BINARELLI
Max - I hope I'n not beating a dead horse. You speak of
publishing varations. I assume you are speaking of a book in this
case. Some people think using a red deck instead of a blue is a
variatin. This is of course nonsense. Many variations are this
slight however. If you use postcards instead of playing cards, is
this a variation? If the idea is in print, as opposed to a dealer
item, do you have to get permission from the originator?
.
E.G. I had a item in Hugard's Magic Monthly - CK Vanish - a
vanish of a small object in a handkerchief. Christopher used the
item in a book of items from Hugard's with credit but no
permission. OK? It was later printed in a book for laymen with not
credit or permission. Not OK?
.
From the above and the following you can see this is not an
abstract problem for me..
I have items in my lecture created by people who are dead. Am I
OK is using them without permission? Some ideas have been
published and some not.
.
Am I killing a sale if I publish an item from a book as opposed
to a dealer item?
.
I guess part of the problem is when does an idea become public
domain. It would be good if Alex Elmsley got money for all the
uses of the Count. But then what of the people whose ideas he
built upon such as Farelli and Jordan? To use the count does
everyone have to buy the original Ghost Count published by Magic
Inc.?
.
I think this a knottier problem in ethics than your reply would
indicate.
.
I admire you writings and ideas, and i'm sure you performance -
if I saw it, so this is a request to a real maven (no
perjorative). Thanks for listening.

Arnaud,
Please forward to Tommy Wonder.
Tommy,
Again let me emphasize how mixed my feelings are on government
support of the arts. I can't in any sense be upset with it when
I consider the incredibly small percentage of the federal budget
spent on the arts.
I believe, however, that we started this discussion about what a
taxpayer can, ethically, expect from an artist who has accepted
government grants. After some thought, I've decided (isn't that
nice of me?) that unless the government put some sort of
restriction on the artist as a condition of the money, than no
complaints can be justified.
Any complaintants should petition the government to place limits
on artists receiving government money.
In this day and age it is almost impossible to NOT offend
SOMEONE.
It is situations like these that remind me why our U.S.
forefathers did NOT set up this government as a democracy. There
are times when the majority is not correct. Even if the Moral
Majority were indeed a majority, they would have no right to
inflict their views of morality on me.
I guess I'm just getting cynical in my old age.

Doc,
Getting flash bills epends on what you want. If you want
genuine U.S. currency that will burn brightly without leaving an
ash, just say the word, and give an address. I'll send you some.
(I still have to send some to David, I left my last three as a
tip accidently.)
If you want bills that look similar, and burn just like flash
paper, wait until I contact Pete's friend who does printing.
I'll get him to print me up some bills on thinner stock, and
maybe on one side only.
Enjoy!

Following is quoted from recently published article on appearance at
SYM meeting in Stamford, Ct.: "IF YOU SEE A GOOD ROUTINE, TRICK OR

CHANGING A TRICK TO PERSONALIZE IT IS RISKY; IT MIGHT GET WATERED
DOWN."
I wonder what David C., Max, Lance Burton, or other performers
would say to this advice, especially if they had paid hih dollars to
some writer for the material?
The "advice" is attributed to Bob Elliott, director of the Tannen
Magic Camp. I certainly hope that the so called "advice" was not
intended to be taken seriously by the kids, but unfortunately it was,
and now has been published and distributed to about 1400 young people.

Re: ETHICS, WHAT'S THAT
I don't think the "advise", which is being attributed to Mr. Elliot, is
new. this technique has been used for years by comics. I, not knowing
what was intended, believe that what probally was meant was that study
the "masters" and learn from what they do. Take the presentation and
effect and try and produce a simular effect with "your" own style. Not
so many years ago I had lunch with Mlton Berle who told me "If you
hear a good joke, steal it, and then make it yours." Meaning tell the
joke, because it's funny, but make sure your delivery is "yours".
People new to magic may not be able to do this. But they have to start
somewhere and as they grow they hopefully will develop as performers,
finding their own way of entertaining. I think the hardest lesson is
to find your right style. Nothing "sticks-out" more than someone who
looks like Lance B. performing in the style of Doug Henning or someone
dressed ala Doug Henning trying to act like S and R. Study the greats
both past and present, but BE ORIGINAL in your presentation.

Re: FUNDING THE ARTS
Remember Pete Biro's on-the-scene reports on the Oakland fire? Well,
the IRS has found a new way to fund the arts, as well as bombers,
scientific junkets to South America, and welfare. They have
provisionally ruled that the homeowners whose homes were destroyed by
the fire will _not_ be able to deduct their morgage interest this year!
It seems that you can only deduct interest on your primary residence,
and since those homes burned down, those folks aren't living there
anymore.
Remember Tabby's wonderful story of the eyeball on the band bus? Well,
that eyeball may still be traveling, and it may have found a companion.
It seems that a pair of eyeballs, possibly from an animal, were found
lying on a seat on a city bus.

Re: BINARELLI
MAGIC!-NL Tue 04 Feb 92 20:06
Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:
Dear Cy,
Your presumption that I have obviously not worked a room doing
close-up with a live rock band blasting at top noise at the same
time is totally wrong, I have, not just once, but many many
times. Quite often I find myself in that particular situation.
Believe me, I know what I am talking about concerning this.
I know that many people have no idea what voice training can do.
I know that most can improve their voice so much that they will
be heard TEN times as well. This is no exaggaration! One can
really be heard ten times as well, when diction, breath control,
projection etc are perfect. Most people feel that their voice is
okay, well usually that is the case for everyday use, but working
in a pandemonium asks for a lot more. Now my own voice is not
perfect, by no means, it used to be a lot better 20 years ago,
but I have started to work on it again.
I absolutely guarantee to you that provided your body has no
defects, and that you take voice lessons from someone who knows
both medically and theatrically what you need, that when you take
these lessons once a week, you do your best and train for half an
hour a day, that after 2 years or so, you will be able to cope
with that blasting rock band with no pain. I am willing to bet
the price of the amplification system you have on it. Take
lessons from someone qualified, do your best, and I guarantee!
Look at voice-experts. Opera singers for instance. Without
amplification, they are able to sing and be heard over a FULL
orchestra, also in the parts where the orchestra plays full
force. And they do not even need to overstrain and damage their
voice doing it. Their voice may get tired doing it, sure, but
they do not damage it! And they are heard!
Concerning this noise problem, I really feel that this is an area
where professional help should be gotten. Do not dismiss it
without trying, simply because it may seem unlikely that it might
help all that much. Most people have no idea at how enormously it
can help.
In a close-up situation, sitting or standing at a table with 10
or 15 people around it, training your voice is in my mind the
best approach to cope with the noise problem caused by the rock
bands. An amplification system in such a situation is very
unnatural, people will feel being performed at, instead of what
close-up should be, where people get the feeling of being part of
something happening. No way can you get this interaction-feeling
by using an amplification system.
Trade shows, lectures, "magic-convention close-up" and like
situations, is a slightly different thing. There it does not
deter from what you do if people are watching something, watching
a presentation. But in real close-up, people should never have
the idea of watching a presentation, they should have the feeling
of being part of it. This is virtually impossible when the
situation is so unnatural, it is totally unnatural for a small
intimate group of people that one of them is using an
amplification system. Besides that, amplification, in close-up,
is unnecessary, even with a rock band playing full force, just
train the voice, like opera singers and actors do. A good voice

Re: CLOSE UP ILLUSIONS
I recently received an extra copy of the companion video tape to Gary
Oellett's _Close Up Illusions_. If anyone can use it I'll make you a
great deal. Regular retail is $25.00 If you bought it with the book it
was on special for $19.00. YOUR PRICE $16.00. This tape is not a
performance or instructional tape. It is Gary demonstrating the effects
and sleights from the book. The book is exellent and I reccomendit to
everyone. The tape makes the items inthe book really come alive.
There were a few items inthe book that I would have passed over from
the description, but on the tape it is a whole different story. I was
very impressed and will now learn what I might have missed before.
The tape mentioned above is brand new and has never been viewed. If you
want it please let me know fast.

Because the govt. beauracrats like opera and not vaudeville. In their
wisdom opera has class and the variety arts do not, hence they use
the govt. gun to take our money and support something we wouldn't
normally choose to support. But we are just no-class commoners and
if we don't choose to support opera, then they have to do it for us.

The difference is, of course, that most comics know it is wrong to
steal material even though they do it -- making various
rationalizations. Magicians, usually, don't have the faintest notion
that it is wrong to take material from the acts of others -- which is
why advice that it should be obvious is tongue-in-cheek is taken
seriously; given the examples young magicians have, why WOULDN'T they
take it seriously?

NO NO NO... NO KNIVE, NO HEAT... HOLY COW...YOU DON'T KNOW THE
WORK..... Basically you tapa corner of a card on the table until
you get a tiny bit of split. Cards split apart (dark colored paper
glue is holding the pieces) in 1/3rds... You get a thin and a
thick piece. You lay the card flat on the table with the 1/3 or
2/3 part -- that you want to keep -- face down and peal back the
1/3 or 2/3 part above the split. It takes some knack, but it is
a neat thing when you get it... like ZAP and you can peal a card
in seconds. After you break the corner and fiddle the bits apart
a little ... there is somewhere a better description in print.
.
Maybe TA can let you know... Good splittin'

The quoted material was contained in a article about Elliott and

written as a review of that meeting (kinda like the Ring reports in

have been deleted, changed or something by the editor (in my opinion at

Agreed. I just know how hard it is for the up and coming in small town
USA or small town Russia for that much, to develop his/her act. I
would have loved the chance to grow up in L.A. and be a junior at The
Magic Castle and study under the greats that reside there. I know that
"theft" of material, even by the big guys in the biz is everywhere. I
don't think it right. But it's hard for a fellow not to try something
that has been developed by another. How many great piano composers
have there been in time and how many piano players. I trhink the same
is true in magic. A few guys, like yourself, who invent and develop,
and many, MANY, MANY that "try" and perform the magic. I guess that's
why I onlt steal from guys dead a hundred years or more. (That was an
attempt at a joke.) This is an interesting topic of discussion. But
I don't know what other point can be made, than the one you already
have. I guess you are indeed a master of "economy of words".

OK, instead of Elliott telling kids to "STEAL FROM THE BEST"...
why didn't he say something like... "Study the magic you see, live
on TV, watch what the BEST people do... Work on your magic. Try
to emulate those you admire to begin, but above all work hard to
JUST BE YOURSELF... no one can be someone else with any success.
.
Read books, interpret the magic you read about and see, in your
own way.
.
NOTE: Some of the best I have seen have NOT BEEN INFLUENCED BY
OTHERS... LIKE RENE LAVAND AND LENNERT GREEN. And the guy, Bill
Anderson, that started me. THEY DID NOT SEE MUCH OTHER MAGIC. THEY
LITERALLY LIVED IN CAVES AND WHEN THEY CAME OUT THEY DAZZLED AND
AMAZED OTHERS because they DID THINGS "UNLIKE" ANY ONE ELSE!"

Agree that things should be in the private sector. Just yesterday
a theater was turned down over the committee's recomendation.
They sen the government a tape of an act in which nude woman was
shown bound on the stage. Another act was an almost nude woman
who gave the audience oil and invited them to rub it on her.
Don't have any idea what she was trying to prove.
.
The government felt the theater was trying for some sort of a
test case. The committee had not viewed the tape. I'm sure there
will be more in the papers about this.

Re: ETHICS, WHAT'S THAT
My mentor Hen Fetsch always returned from conventions with items
he could use. His feeling was that it was OK if you did not do
the material in the same venue, i.e. Ok if the person did not
play Baltimore. I had always considered Hen to be quite ethical,
but all of you have made me wonder.
.
Ricky Jay would be upset, I'm sure, if nyone was to use his
McDonald Queen effect even though methods are in print and the
patter is almost straight from Erdnase. He has made the item a
feature. People should get credit for their effort.
.
Great Popular Music singers use the same songs as others - even
sometimes similar arrangements. Actors don't write their own
plays. Are the writers always paid. It is my understanding that
the First Folios of Shakespeare's plays were put together by
people sitting in the audience and writing them down. Thievery is
alway bad and unethical, but I wonder where any advancement of
performing art would be if people didn't use other people's
ideas.
.
Sorry to keep on this subject but there are no simple answers.

Very interesting thoughts on voice training. It should work.
However, the times I've worked the usual setup is a 10 person
table, so at least one or two people are over 6 feet away.
Perhaps the people near the performer would consider the voice
you are reccommending would not seen natural to those close by.
I believe that most Broadway musicals use amplification.
Incidentally, some of the places I've worked, the speakes were
within a few feet of the table.
.
I can't agree with the idea of people feeling they are
being performed at. Albert Goshman always performed a close-up
show -the same is true for Del Ray. Therefore I can see nothing
wrong with this approach.
.
Again I think voice training is of great use. A good voice
is certainly one of our tools, but you do admit that some places
amplification is of help.

Re: ETHICS, WHAT'S THAT
I felt the same way, living in Baltimore during the 40's. This
was the golden age in New York and all we got were the scraps
from the table. We awaited every book, and ideas brought from New
York by travelers. We used everything we could get our hands on
and rework the material to fit our delivery and persona.
.
I have always felt that the "underground" in passing ideas among
a few were doing an injustice to the people not in the loop. Some
of the ideas could be reworked by inventive people. These people
were deprived of the knowledge.
.
More further at another time.

It's an interesting point about some performers inventing
without seeing other magic. I think you can add Jerry Andrus to
that list. However, I wonder if they were really living in caves
and were not aware of something going on in the outside world.
If it were not for PIF PAFF POOF, I wonder if Andrus would have
thought of his marvelous Linking Pins. Lavand uses a Himber
Wallet. He does other known effects, of course changing the
methods so he can do them with the one hand he has.

Re: ETHICS, WHAT'S THAT
There are a lot of people who are good at performing but not at
creating material. However, there are thousands of books with some
wonderful magic that nobody does. Closeuppers all do Matrix, Chop Cup,
Card To Wallet -- illusionists all do ZigZag, Impaling, etc. -- there
isn't any excuse for it. Even if in accordance with Sturgeon's Law we
throw out 90% of it as crap, the rest of the stuff in the books is more
material than all the pros will ever need. Of course -- first they
have to learn how to read, which these days may be a problem...

Re: ETHICS, WHAT'S THAT
I would like to point out again that Ricky's Coterie routine is
inspired, certainly, by the Erdnase patter but most of it is written
by himself; check a tape and follow along the text. You will see that
a good deal of the patter is Jay's, but he was so good at emulating the
style that few realize this. Also, while he does use the same gaffs as
in McDonald, he is NOT doing the McDonald routine or anything like it;
the sequence of moves, the construction of the routine are entirely
different. That routine and presentation is uniquely Ricky's; he
didn't just stick a couple of things together.

Actually, it should be pointed out that Andrus' Linking Pins were very
probably more likely influenced by L. Vosburgh Lyon's SLIP SNAP SPOOF,
which appeared in the Phoenix; this effect introduced the "key" pin.

To continue with my grumbly annotations -- the Seabrooke routine is in
large part the creation of Eric Williams, who published it in ABRA; the
Williams routine used a sealed envelope rather than a wallet, but
Williams did suggest a wallet as a possibility.

It is amazing what professional training in voice can do; when I was an

we were doing Shakespeare with no miks, no amplification. It was an
interesting experience...!

How many magical performers working today would you book???? How many
are worth the price of admisssion? The problem with magic as a whole
is that a great deal are "bas clas" and not willing to put the work

(That should read...I and most decent performers what to do, ENTERTAIN.
Don't get me started on the lack of study of most magicains I know. I

Re: ORIGINALITY
I have a real problem with people casting stones at performers
who use other people's material.
.
If a routine is in print, the buyer has the right to perform. If
the routine includes presentation, patter etc. that can be used
too. It can been tipped to friends but not sold.
.
If there is a new idea or subtlity it should e able to be used
in another effect and published, unless the original is still a
dealer's item. If there is a better handling that can be
published also.
.
One of the new gurus in the field of close-up magic is Eugene
Burger. I haven't seen him perform but would like to. I
appreciate his ideas on performing. However I have problems with
his book "The Performance of Close-up Magic".
.
He is adamant that perfomers should not use other performers
material. Many of the essays in the book stress this point.
However what do we see when he uses examples of good close-up
performing that he uses?
.
The first is the Bert Allerton Aspirin Tin Routine. The routine
is almost exactly the Allerton routine from a book published by
Magic Inc. Instead of a magnet in a match packet he uses the
cards. He even uses the idea of the person's name being printed
oddly on the give-away envelope at the end. I don't find his
presentation that original.
.
The vanishing cigarette with a pull is also Allerton's. Extra
material on the details of handling, only.
.
Rosini's double reverse has some difference in handling. I" heard
this is Henry Christ's, who seldom gets credit.
.
Animated Matchbox and Haunted Pack. Both are very derivitve.
Some differences in handling, but same effects and method.
.
So I'm wondering why people who are so adamant about being
original seem to be using other people's material. I guess I may
be dense. I think, though I've used other's ideas, that I've been
more original than some others who give me advice.
.
There has been nothing that has pleased me more than seeing an
idea of mine used by a competent performer to entertain an
audience. If I had tried to make a living through creation of
magic I might feel different.
.
This whole problem of originality never ceases to intrigue me.
I'd like to hear more from Max and other creators on these
problems of mine. Max's three points are fine, but do not
represent the complexity of the issue.

Re: ORIGINALITY
Like somone (you? me?) said, "It isn't an easily answered question".
Burger is doing a lot of what has been created by others. His
PERSONNA is indeed very much HIM... that is his main asset... his
style, look, manner. The tricks are old as the hills... haunted
pack, etc... and practically (at one time) "generic" ... and now
someone (by many) forgotten. Forgotten for the new FAD stuff... the
stuff the current hot guys are hammering out...
.
Hey, in my "for money" stage/comedy club act... I do "Chase the
Ace" (taught to me by the creator of the ROUTINING, Ken Brooke,
the "Linking Rings" taught to me by Jay Marshall (but with many of
my own handling/presentation bits), The Card in Balloon -- 90-percent
my own, especially the bits, handling, etc., and about 20-percent
advice from Persi Diaconis on "overall needs of routine) (I know
90 and 20 don't add to 100, but the trick is a 110-percenter!!!
(I devised this to replace the Seabrooke version of the Note in
Wallet that Seabrooke had given/taught me... when he started to
come to the US...) I also do the Malini Egg Bag AS TAUGHT TO ME BY
KEN BROOKE (I learned it while doing the artwork sketches for his
instruction sheets). Not much original effects...but the handlings
and style are mine... they are in fact, as old as the ages in
effect... Classics. A line I once did (for Jay who was in audience)
when I picked up the rings... "I do the Rings, a true Classic, but
I do all the Classics... I just use different METHODS!"
.
SO I guess the bottom line might be... "don't do other folks'
signature MATERIAL... maybe the same trick? Not really, but make
sure it is you... And... and... when at a place other magi work,
like the Castle I BELIEVE IT IS THE RESPONSIBLITY OF EACH AND EVERY
PERFORMER (not the booker always, but booker should be informed
and knowledgable as to what they do) TO NOT DUPLICATE THE EFFECTS
OF OTHERS ON SAME NIGHT.
.
Watched David Copperfield TAPE of DC doing the Burnt Note in Wallet
(Seabrooke's) while waiting in line to go in and see Seabrooke.
He didn't know the tape was running (all night over and over) and
he was inside doing his note in wallet.
.
Now... that was STUPID and the host at the Castle SHOULD HAVE
CHANGED THE TAPE!!!!!
.
I have babbled on and now forget the beginning of my message.
That's ok, just do one thing... all of us... THINK about what you
do, from all angles... Skill, Effect, Effect on others, Effect
on brother Magi, effect on your needs (money, fun, punishment (of
viewers?) and above all... be cool!)

Re: ORIGINALITY
I might clarify this a bit -- I don't think Eugene is objecting to
people doing material other people have created (if, of course, they
have published it or otherwise given their permission); I think he is
talking about doing material THAT OTHER PERFORMERS ARE DOING. If I am
interpreting him correctly, I will say that is also my view. The
biggest single mystery in magic to me is why any performer would WANT
to do an effect that someone else is doing. It isn't like there is a
shortage of effects. There are thousands of terrific effects and
routines in print that NOBODY is doing -- and I dunno about you, but if
I never see another Chop Cup or Matrix or Impaling or ZigZag I will be
perfectly happy.

Re: ETHICS, WHAT'S THAT
As a working comic and magician I see stealing all the time. When I
work either the Improv or the Comedy Store here in L.A. it's amazing
how many comics are baiscally doing the same routines. There is very
little originality out there and those who display any kind of original
thinking are quickly snapped up by TV so that they can stiffle in in a
sitcom.
.
In my current Castle close-up act I have tried to be as original as
possible, even being off-beat, which is not appreciated in magic at
times. My ex-girlfriend used to hate my act (and later me) because she
wanted me to do the same effects as everone else, ie: card to wallet,
pick-a-card, etc. She couldn't rationalize that I wasn't looking for
something that was highly commercial but extremely different (this is
not to say that those effects aren't commercial). I like to stick-out
like a bad thumb-tip, but many magicians are extremely afraid of taking
any kind of risk or being bold and outrageous. Some people have
criticized me for wearinga costume that's very much like Harry
Anderson's but the costume is not the act...it is just a small portion
and one which allows me to do and claim the attrocities in my act. If
you ahve ever met me and/or have seen my act you will see a major
difference. This week I will be debuting several new effects (at least
to me) including a thing called CARD VAMPIRE (original), a rather
offbeat handling of a torn and restored tissue paper, a routine using
goldfish and leeches and a routine I have been using for years and that
I have never (except the original inventor) seen anyone do, I call it
THE WISHING SHELLS, it's a bizzare reworking ofAlan Okawa's Wishing
Shells from Richard's Almanac (1985) and is being done with Alan's
blessings and permission.
Originality is within common reach of everyone, it's just that too many
people are lazy and would rather take the easy way out. My new lecture
"POWER MAGIC!" addresses this and many other points and shows many new
ways to overcoming this and many other problems in magic. To roughly
paraphrase Auntie Mame: "Life is a banquet, and mny people are
starving."

GREAT! I look forward to seeing their schedule of cities and to
seeing the show...and what is changed from the St. Louis premier.

Re: WHAT'S HAPPEND
Er, Uh, Yeah. I was gone for four days and the system stayed up! BUT
it managed to insert that little message at the front about "do you
want to wait?" Before I left, I had flushed the buffers to keep that
from happening, but, of course, it happened anyway.
Both programming and I are a bit puzzled about why that message
appears! It is a sort of random occurance (as opposed to the one that
can occur later that tells you the message base is being packed - that
one is real).
What I think I'm going to have to do is to change that phantom message
(if I can find it!) to something like "Type Y and Press Enter" until we
can find out why it happens.

Re: WHAT'S HAPPEND
See my earlier message about the phantom message (Wait Y/N). It is
just one of those things the system likes to do when I'm away and it is
bored.

Re: FUNDING THE ARTS
Thanks for the info on the IRS magician (Larry Wright). While
traveling this weekend, I learned that there is a pilot/magician who
works for Continental and also, there was a guy on one of the flights
into Houston (not my flight) who did some great balloon sculpture - he
did it for every kid on the plane and for the crew members.
But an IRS/magician??? Sheesh!!!

Re: BILL SWITCH?
ERASE *.* is cute, but 1) it takes too long, and 2) it actually doesn't
erase the evidence! Especially with DOS 5.0 which includes an unerase!

Re: NOTICE
Thanks, Jerry. As you can tell, we need all the help around here that
we can get! There are, of course, a couple of crystals inside the
computer, but I guess they are busy and that they may be oriented in
the wrong directions.
