Re: ORIGINALITY
Gee, I was reading the beginning of your message thinking to myself
I hope I can always do the Chop Cup.... 'course it can be disguised
and of double course THE PRESENTER can be more powerful than the
trick, fer example Paul Daniels. Who cares what the trick is?
.
I made a crazy experiment the other night. It wasn't 100-ercent
on purpose, but what I was doing was Demonstrating the dozen ways
Bro. Hamman's Mystic Nine evolved to Watch the Ace, Wild Card,
Wild Man, Factory Rejects, Xerox, and back to the Gypsy Curse.
.
Well I figured there was NO WAY I could get thru all without getting
lost and/or blowing a move... so I went ahead... and (not bragging
but I had not worked in awhile and was nervous about by PERFORMING
PERSONNA... ) so I flew on into it all... and got BACK INTO MY
LOOSE AND WILD WAYS..... and when I completely got lost and blew
a trick... IT DIDN'T MATTER... they laffed, I hit myself in the
head with something (soft) re set, told a joke and got back into
it... proving that the trick was the least important thing that
was going on.
.
Two things happened.
.
The attendees LEARNED a lot about the effect.
.
And Biro got his confidence back after a loooooong depressing
layoff.
.
(Nashville helped, but I was still tentative there).
.
Whew!

Methinks the storm is here now..... ARgh... Had a fun morning at
my "new Job"... 'twas the staff QUARTERLY REPORT time... kinda a
half business and half what's happnin' dude's session in the
company... with all 50-60 folks in attendance.
.
The accounting guy thought he would throw out some funny stats...
"As we are computerized, he said, we find that the number of
Invoices we generated this last quarter would, if laid end to end,
reach 3.9 miles. We checked... and 3.9 miles from here there is
nothing !!! But, But... we also found that the Initial "M" showed
up the most as the first letter of employees last names. And... and,
if you took all the employees that had a name starting with "M" and
laid them end to end they would reach 30 feet!"
.
Well, oh, great math wizzards out there.. that don't add up... and
a few catcalls and groans erupted...
.
My turn followed... heheheheheh... and I let the whold joint know
where I am from by saying...
.
It's nice to be here, but I find it amazing that I am 4.3 feet
taller than all those persons in this room who's name starts with
an M... "CHEERS, STANDING OVATION... ETC..." Heheheeheh... if they
only know what they're in for... har... Oh, I am now "producer"

Max,
Recently finished reading Michael Crichton's fast new
mystery novel RISING SUN, in which he does a real job
on Japan. Fascinating reading -- but would be
interested to hear your views on it, in light of your
association with the country, and also in light of Doc
Eason's recent job for Honda. The book almost makes me
want to sell my Honda and Isuzu, and melt my Tenyo
tricks. (If you've also read Crichton's supposedly
nonfiction TRAVELS, it would likewise be interesting to
hear what you thought of the spoonbending party he
attended.)

Re: ORIGINALITY
TA - I suppose you are correct about Burger. Unless someone is
well read and sees a lot of magic, it is hard to tell if
something is performed by someone else. You people on the Coast
can see performers at the castle etc., but many of us don't have
this advantage.
.
There are a great many fine effects, but not all of them good
enough to be classics. Does magic have to be the only art that
cannot be seen again by an audience. Drama, dance and most music
are repeated; and the audience enjoys the i nterpretation. People
still still perform Hamlet and Beethoven's fifth.
.
I agree completely on the use of the same tricks on one show
or the same venue. Magic conventions and the Magic Castle are the
big criminals in this crime. When I worked the Close-up Room at
the Castle, I discovered that another magician was using the card
to wallet in another part of the Castle. I approached him with
the problem and he agreed to drop the effect. Perhaps the Castle
and the Convention planners should look carefully at the people
they are booking to avoid duplication. In many cases, asking
someone to drop an effect will ruin a performer's routine.
.
Incidentally at my close-up show I did three 4 ace assembies in a
row. The premise was that it was more difficult each time.
Hamman's Final Aces uses a similar premise.
.
It was prime error at the Castle to have a film of Copperfield
performing the bill in envelope for people to see as they were
waiting to see Seabrooke. Perhaps they saw how poorly it looked
in Copperfield's hands. I performed my 3 Card Monte routine the
other night before Darwin Ortiz's lecture, not knowing he was
going to perform and explain the effect.
.
So my conclusion is to use the best effects you can find.
Certainly the classics. If audiences will be subjected to the
same trick done by someone else, I want to be sure that my
version is the better. In my area of performing I want the
effects to be different. I should be ready to drop an effect if
it conflicts with another performer on the same evening.
.
This is still a big problem.

Re: ORIGINALITY
I dunno -- there are people who do classic songs, of course -- but,
unless they are the ones who made the songs famous a long time ago,
they are being consciously nostalgic, a la Harry Connick. Most modern
musical acts create their own material, and don't do anyone else's
unless they've got an exclusive on it. Given that the singers have to
create their own songs or pay someone to do it for them -- and
magicians have an endless supply of magic to draw from -- I can't see
any excuse for two performers doing the same trick. Ever. In this
sense "classic" just means a lot of people do it -- so I would avoid
the classics if at all possible, unless they passed the Steinmeyer
Test. This is: if the audience saw your version, and saw someone
else's version, would they think they were the same effect?

Re: ETHICS
We have received a request from one of our members for the limited
reproduction of portions of the MAGIC! discussion on Ethics. This
material would be used by a local magic group and they have
traditionally received such approval from magazines and authors in
the past.
This permission would be for a single use, and not for any
republication, with that restriction clearly stated to their
members, along with a statement that these materials are "reproduced
with the consent of the editors/publishers and author of the
articles, and all further republication or reproduction rights have
been reserved to such publications and/or persons."
I endorse their request and think it is a way to extend the
awareness of the need for ethical practices to others in the magic
community. I would like to provide them with permission, but I
would also like to make sure that doing so is in keeping with the
wishes of the members of MAGIC! Your thoughts on this matter would
be most appreciated.

Re: COIN TRICK
Here's a coin trick I've been doing lately. It's not original, but I
don't know who the inventor is. I just added a chinatown half to it.
If you're looking for a magician-fooler, forget it, but if you want a
cute trick for laymen, it plays well. Enough palaver...
You need 5 coins: A regular penny, a big penny (silver dollar
size), a half dollar, a chinatown half and the chinese coin that goes
with it. all are in your left pants pocket. You right-handed guys
read "right" for "left."
The chinatown coin has the center painted to match your palm. I
used grease paint. My wife's make-up wasn't close enough.
Get the chinese coin out, fingerpalming the chinatown half. Let
people examine the coin. Point out that the hole is so they could wear
them around their neck (lets them know they can see through it without
saying so).
Take back the coin with the left hand and Bobo switch the chinatown
half as you put it into your right hand. left hand goes to pocket,
drops the chinese coin and brings out the half to be examined. Put the
half into the right hand, on top of the chinatown half, which is
chinese side up, so that the half almost covers the hole. Put both
coins into the spectators hand, have them close their hand and turn it
over. Remove the chinatown coin. The half side is up, so apparently
you have removed the half. Hocus pocus. They open their hand and you
open yours. Now they have the half and you have the chinese coin
(because you turned your coin over).
Display the chinatown coin briefly, put it back into your pocket,
fingerpalm the big penny and bring out the regular penny at your
fingertips. The half from the spectator's hand is on the table. Pick
up te half, Bobo switch it for the big penny and put the big penny
into the spectator's hand without letting them see it. (I say, "Hold
this half tightly. I'm going to steal it.") Pick up the regular penny
and Bobo switch in the half as you pretend to put the penny into your
right hand. Tell 'em their half will shrink and turn into a penny.
Nothing happens. Go into your pocket, ditch the penny and bring out
the chinese coin. Rub the back of your hand with it and then the
spectators. you open your had and show that you have the half.. They
open their hand and find the big penny. Finis!
Sounds confusing, but it's easy to do. Gets a laugh and fools
people too. A couple lines.
e lines: "Here's a Chinese coin.
It was probably made in China. Here's a half dollar. It was probably
made in Japan (Dick Stoner). " (Displaying the big penny)
"Either the penny grew or I'm shrinking (Goshman)." (Displaying the
big penny) This coin was training for the Olympics...taking steroids.
Hope you enjoy it.

Re: ODDEST PARAGRAPH?
Mr. Jeff Busby is a registered member of MAGIC!, although a bout of ill
health and some personal situations have kept him from being active of
late. He provided a great deal of support and encouragement in the
early days of MAGIC! and I miss him around here a great deal.
I received a mini-catalog from Jeff today and there were some good
things in there. One was a reprint of Bart Whaley's "Who's Who In
Magic," a book that, along with T. A. Water's "Encyclopedia of Magic
and Magicians," I refer to nearly every day.
But in the description of the book is one of the oddest paragraphs I've
seen in a long time:
"You'll be intrigued by the stories of 'special people' in magic: the
midgets, dwarfs, giants, and others. You'll read about the minorities:
the women, the blacks, an the Jews (including horrifying material on
what the Nazi Holocaust did to the Jewish magicians). You'll look at
the dark side too - the transexuals, homosexuals, bisexuals, cross
dressers, sadomasochists, and the womanizers."

That papragraph is odd only in showing Whaley's narrowmindedness and
bigotry -- in general terms, it makes fully as much sense as a lot of
what follows. You will note that there are several "lind items" in
that Intro, where Whaley does not name names -- very odd in a supposed
reference work. As you may imagine -- given Whaley's hatchet job on me
in EPOPTICA -- I am far from objective about him. I will state,
however, that he gets just about everything wrong in his entry on me
and says several other things -- both in the Intro and the body of the
work -- that are outright mistakes or deliberate falsehoods; since I
can't begin to guess at his motivations I will not speculate. I will
be happy to cite chapter and verse shold anyone be interested.

Today I had the Raging Cerritos River going by the office. I'm on
the corner of Brookhurst & Cerritos (cerritos would go right thru
Disneyland Main Street if it went thru - 1 1/2 miles due East of
here) - seems all the water from Disneyland was coming right down
Cerritos. The wakes of cars going down Brookhurst were sending waves
right up to the front door - 2 more inches and they would have been
coming right on into the office.
.
At one point I could look out the front door and couldn't see the
street or my front lawn - totally under water. I looked out the
back and couldn't see the alley. Gee I've always wanted to live on an
Island !

Re: ORIGINALITY
God - I'hadn't realized that Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart et al
wrote classic songs. It's only nostalgia listening to this stuff?
These people wrote _good_ songs that every Jazz and Cabaret
performer still use. IK guess I dropped out of music when Miles
started to do fusion. Showing my age I guess.
.
I've been puzzled as to when performers had to write their own
material, and other performers "covered" the song. This as
always been a problem for me. I go my neighborhood Jazz Bar and I
see college kids listening to Ellington and Davis. I still have
hope for the future. Incidentally I've heard Cabaret performers
fo Billy Joel. People do the same material when it is good. Much
of what is done today is not in that category. If Whaley is
correct, I'm about 11 years older than you. I can't imagine that
you can really dig what is being done with music. I'll take
Sinatra , Bennett and Streisand - you can have Rose and Garcia
(not Frank - Jerry).
.
Re Steimmeyer - I don't understand his point. If I do an
original cut and restored rope trick, original in method and
presentation, I'm sure an audience would view it as the same
trick as someone doing another version. If I use a production box
created for the production of silks and produce a tiger, the
audience will percieve it as two different effects.
.
Getting to basics - isn't every restoration the same effect?
Rope, bill, necktie etc.
.
The presentation is all. No one should take the unpublished
presentation - nor published if not in one's style. I've been
approached by laymen who tell me their favorite trick is the
linking rings. Don't know why - maybe its a classic and hac
fundamental appeals. Reread Fitzkee and look at the part on
appeals.

Re: ORIGINALITY
Stacey - I couldn't agree more. I've seen this kind of thing
going on, and it almost the worst. The worst? In the history of
magic there have been people who not only steal an entire act but
also a _name_. Check back on this board and read the story of
someone doing Del Ray's act at the Castle.
.
What is to be done about the problem?
.
1. I you see a flagrant example of stealing, let the person know
how you feel about it. You may become unpopular, but enough
people start complaining the perpertrators may get the point.
.
2. If you are in a club, seek out the manager and express your
displeasure of seeing the same material that you saw before.
Danger - the second person may be the original - so tread softly.
.
There may be many actions that we can take; but the thief must be
assured that copying, like crime, does not pay. Too many people
think there is nothing wrong with this kind of thing. Those who
think it unethical should show them the error.
.
However a caveat. Somehow there should be some guidelines as to
what is ethical. I think that is something that is being
discussed on MAGIC!, but it is far from being defined.

Perhaps we agree that the subject should not have been brought

Re: ODDEST PARAGRAPH?
I will be the first to admit that there are a number of errors in my
book -- some typos and some omissions. I would point out in partial
defense, however, that in the case of many living performers I made
repeated attempts to get the relevant information from them and was
told it would be forthcoming. Unfortunately, I had a deadline beyond
which I couldn't wait. As for completeness -- the data on just about
ANYONE I list could have been much more complete, but that was never
the purpose of the book; it was simply to give a general idea of who
they were and what they did.
Since the book's publication I have kept revising and adding to the
information, and in the fulness of time I expect to issue a revised and
updated edition.
I will say one more thing; I will match my book's accuracy against
Whaley's with no hesitation whatever.

Re: ORIGINALITY
It just may be that since the most popular musician/performers of today
create their own material, and most magicians don't -- that's the
reason that there are music superstars all over the place and in magic
we only have three or four at best.
As to music -- I like John Dowland, and Vivaldi, and Emmylou Harris
and Fairport Convention and Michael Jackson and Aerosmith and Van Halen
and Nanci Griffiths and Mel Torme and Nancy Wilson and...whoever's
good, no matter what kind of music they're doing. I have no fondness
for any particular school of music, or think that jazz is neccesariloy
(pardon, necessarily) better than rock or classical better than
country. In fact, one of my favorite composers is Ennio Morricone, who
does all those terrific soundtracks; ditto Bernard Hermann.
I don't think it is possible to do a new cut and restored rope, no
matter how you do it. The Moving Knot effect -- now THERE'S a new
effect. The last time I cut and restored a rope I was fourteen -- and
I think I was tired of it then.

Re: ORIGINALITY
Actually (I was there) what Steinmeyer said, in conversation to
the GUY ripping off the Origami Box, was, "what is different
about the box you make?" The guy said, "I found different hinges."
.
That really puzzled Jim (and me)... then on the later panel show,
at the PCAM Convention, Steinmeyer said (and I agree with him),
"To me it is different --- IF --- you can do it on THE SAME SHOW
and the audience percieves it as a different trick."
.
AS to my friend (I didn't check ages -- I could lose) T A, I don't
agree that "no one should do the same tricks"... Al Koran, Fred
Kaps, Jay Marshall, Topper Martyn, Richard Ross... all do the
Linking Rings... all different presentations... All great. All
can do them all they want as far as I am concerned... but NONE OF
THEM WOULD DO it if they were all on the same show. Or at the
Castle at the same time. Those kinda guys would work it out.
.
My lay act uses Rings, Cut Restored Rope, Egg Bag, Silk to Egg, OR
Sucker Silk, Card in Balloon. Fooey on anybody that thinks these
tricks don't work. They are, in my mind, classics, the effects
are EASY for the audience to follow and wonderful for my kind of
byplay... where the byplay is MORE IMPORTANT than the tricks. Ken
Brooke always preached to me "it is the links between the magic
tricks that MAKE AN ACT".... g'nite

Whit is an incredible performer. Everything is perfection. It is a

Personality, timing, skill, everything comes together and it is real

Anthony has taken that most brutal job in the arts upon himself - he is
pushing the very outer edges of the envelope. It is one thing to eat
a live goldfish (possibly a first for the close-up gallery!) and
another to chew on it for a long, long time. It ain't easy being out
there at the edge - it can be very cold and cruel, and they don't call
it the "bleeding edge" for nothing (ever seen a "Card Vampire"?), but

Re: MY NOTEBOOK
David (and the rest of the MAGIC! gang)...
.
First off, it was nice finally meeting our sysop. You are the
kind of person I can spend all day talking to. I appreciated our
talk after my 11:30 show. Your review I feel is right on target.
.
My act is more performance art than straight magic. I agree with
you on the point that the audience most of the time has no point
of reference...they expect cute little bunnies and card tricks
and then this guy comes out, eats goldfish, coughs up a rat and
drinks the blood from the pip of a card.
.
My intent in this show is to try to test new bounderies. I am
consistently bored by conventional magic as it is performed my
many so called "magicians". I am intrigued by "different
thinking" and believe that the world would be a much different
place if they were to accept the unexpected and not follow in
rote. I believe that one of the reasons America is in such dire
straits is because we have become a nation of followers and not
leaders, and this is also true of magic. Think about how many
times you have seen the same effect (card warp, professors
nightmare, matrix) at the Castle, performed by different people,
yet doing the same exact routine with the same exact patter.
.
In past messages on this system I have stated that my thinking
is off-beat and unconventional, that I like to stick out like a
bad thumb tip. I agree with you that I have taken an extremely
brutal task upon myself, and that I may be crucified for my
thinking, but lets also remember that unconventional thinking,
while carrying a heavy price tag (psychologically, spiritually
and physically) is the basis for some of the greatest
revelations in history...ie: Copernicus, Galileo, Einstein,
Edison, Fermi, etc. This is not to say that I will somehow
change the course of magic or that I will be remembered for
being a "great" performer or thinker, but within myself, I will
be satisfied and gratefull for attempting the unthinkable and
striving for something that I feel is important.
.
I am taking your advice and "re-framing" the audience at the
beginning of the show, giving them some legs for the table that
is the show and allowing them to relate much more to what is
going on. Using my storytelling skills I will explain a bit more
about the sideshows of old and how they are not seen any longer
and let them know that what they are seeing they will want to
believe as real but in fact is not.
.
I appreciate you coming in last night and the opportunity to
have both met and talked to you concerning this and many other
subjects. I know that we will continue to have many more
"theoretical" discussions in the future... Till the next time...

Re: MY NOTEBOOK
I certainly agree with you about the need for challenges to convention.
I've billed myself for years, in certain circles, as a "dinosaur
kicker." But it is not an occupation without its concerns -
eventually, the dinosaur may turn around and bite your head off!
I think you have a couple of great objectives in what you do - to
challenge the audience and to reacquaint them with the role of the
Geek. A nice combination (seriously) of working to move art forward
and retaining a respect for the past. Of the small number of people
who are leaders rather than followers, too many take either one tack or
the other and never perceive the importance of both.
But a friend of mine once said, "Aircraft carriers are huge; they turn
VERY slowly. Do you know how glad the cooks are???" When you take
them into the unknown, audiences need something to continue to cling to
-- you have to let them keep their security blankets! I think you have
a strong concept in your act, but I think you have to leave a couple of
rocks for the audience to crawl under! Keep smoothin' the edges and I
think you will come out with something powerful.

Re: ORIGINALITY
TA - don't agree at all that originality is what makes the
musicians superstars. I don't think I've heard Torme do anything
original unless it was the Christmas Song. The arrangements and
talent of course carry him above others.
.
I certainly like some of the people you list, but must say
that your interest is wider than mine. This is surely a comment
on my narrowness.
.
An audience does not resent hearing, or seeing something
repeated. I'm often asked for certain items. Music sometimes has
no appeal until the third or fourth hearing. Then the complexity
of the piece shows itself. What would happen if one of the
popular superstars did a concert of completely new material?
There would probably be a riot. They came to hear their
favorites. That could be why some lip sinc.
.
Agree that most Rope tricks loo the same, but it is a small
part of the public that has seen one. As magic fans, as well as
performers, we see too many of the same things. To translate that
to the view of the general public is a mistake. I hear magicians
yell "Not another 4 Ace trick". How many lay people have seen
even one?

Pete - "The same show", makes more sense of the comment. Abbotts
advertized a platform which could conceal a person in a number of
effects. OK - so you vanish someone early in the the show and
later use the apparatus for a production later. Different
effects? I think so.
.
Agree on the classics. I was amazed to see a probably
sophisticated adult audience completely devistated by the Egg
Bag. Your point of being easy to follow is certainly one of the
things that makes a classic. There are other points, of course.
If you look at the classics - almost all of them are repeat
effects - routines. Binarelli makes the same point in his book.
repetition is a major component in _any_ art.

Re: ORIGINALITY
Maybe this is the best way to start. Everytime we see a copy -
let the person know. The performer may not know that it is not
only unethical but holding back their development.
.
There is something else to consider. Almost all artists start out
with a mentor or role model(hate the phrase). I still look at a
trick and visualize it as Vernon or Johnny Thompson would do it.
Mike Ammar might add something about Stone and the Master Mind
idea.
.
Remember when everyone took the Chavez course and then the great
ones became original.
.
Look, in all the arts, if something is popular, you see lots of
copies of the style. Slasher movies, Rap etc. So something must
be a more exact copy of something else to be an ethical problem.
The great Houston "Maltese Falcon" was not the first time the
book was done as a movie; I think it was the third. I'm glad
Houston decided it could be done again.

Re: ORIGINALITY
It is interesting that in citing a star you name Mel Torme; I
personally think Torme is a great artist, but he is a person who became
a star a generation ago. Most rockers and pop singers I know of indeed
do their old songs -- the audience wants to hear them -- but these are
THEIR songs. Performers don't cover contemporary music as was the
custom twenty or thirty years ago, unless they are doing specifically
a nostalgia album.
What with TV, and the current popularity of magic, a lot of people
have seen a lot of magic -- but that really isn't my point in all this;
it is that there is no good reason to do effects others are using, anda number of reasons NOT to. I want people who see me perform to feel
that they have never seen anyone do the things I do. I can do the cups
and balls, and c&r rope, and ring on wand -- but why on earth would I
want to?

I do not know the circumstances of his arrangement with Wonder, as to
just what his rights are. It would be interesting to note, all things
considered, whether (a) Tommy knows the book is being reissued and (b)
what he thinks about it. There will soetimes develop situations --
and I don't know that this is one -- where a person may have a legal
right to publish, but not necessarily a moral one; the business of the
Ken Brooke book comes to mind. This is, however, all speculation until
we hear from Tommy.

Re: ETHICS DIALOGUE
The point is that 500-pound gorillas sit anywhere they want.
Copperfield bought the illusion from Steinmeyer as did the Pendragons,
and he certainly has the right to do it. Whether it is the kind of
illusion he should do is another question. If you have been reading my
posts you know how I stand on two performers doing the same effects.
As to magical superstars copping material -- yes, it does happen,
sometimes with the creator being offered "take it or leave it" minimal
payment, and sometimes not even that. The end result is that there are
a number of creators who simply will not talk to such people regarding
effects; they'd rather the stuff languishes in a notebook than be
ripped off. So the superstar doesn't have the original illusion he
might have -- and doesn't much care. The funny thing is that some of
these guys are in tax brackets so high, and fees to creators are
totally deductible, that this stuff wouldn't cost them a penny -- but
they may think that if they pay someone it's admitting that they aren't
creative geniuses all by themselves. I dunno; this is one I have never
really been able to figure out.

Pete...
You would not have believed my 10:30 show last night. I had sitting in
the front row two young women, rather pretty and from first impression
proper. Shortly before my show began, as I was peeking through the
curtain to get a scope of the audience, I noticed that the women were
occasianally fondling each other, and not in a "friendly woman-like
way" but in a sexual vain. As my show progressed these two women
proceeded to "pet" each other and deeply kiss each other. Here were two
lesbians going at it during my show!
.
Needless to say that it was a major task in keeping my focus on what I
was doing, especially with the beginnings of a "porno" flick" happening
before me. Barring some major occurance, this will most likely be the
most memorable thing about my week at the Castle.
.
After the show they approached me and told me a little about themselves
and that they were on a date! The funny part is that as they were
leaving the show one of them asked me if she could do or get anything
for me....I asked her for a video!
.

Re: MY NOTEBOOK
Cy...
By your message I cannot discern whether you saw the show or not. The
show is not a "gross-out" but it is not your conventional sponge bunny
and pick-a-card magic act either.
.
While my outlook on this performance (what I like to call Magic
Theater) maybe somewhat different than the usual "crap" that is heaped
on us with the tag of magic on it, it is not so far off base nor out of
reach that I cannot be honed into a compact, tight and extremely
enjoyable piece.
.
I have read over and over again, both here and in a wide range of magic
journals that we are not progressing with our art and that is
repetative at best. Yet whe something different and unusual is
attempted everyone screams "bloody murder", mainly because people are
afraid of change and those who are willing to taking risks. One of my
magic role models is Harry Anderson...and although he is very popular
now, ten years ago the same complaints I am hearing now was heard by
them (and Biro can probably attest to this). You see, Harry was
changing the view of magic, and his routines with both the Guinnea Pig
and the Needle-Through-The-Arm were not at first well recieved. But
Harry did not give up. The same can be said about Penn & Teller (even
though the magic community hate them for other reasons).
.
While I have heard some complaints the overall comments are quite
positive, and in fact my first two show last night elicited extremely
good reviews...one of them being from Billy McComb who was worried
about what had been said of the show and sat in on my 11:30
performance. After the show he told me that he saw nothing wrong and
that I should keep on moving forward, that he enjoued the show and
found it extremely funny, touching and though provoking.
.
As I always say, "To each his own." And I will never allow anyone to
take away my "own".
Tony

Re: MORE ETHICS
I have never questioned the fact that Copperfield or any other magician
had the RIGHTS to use any illusion he felt like using. My point was,
and still is, that David is a creative genius, a very talented and
versatile performer. To use, borrow, buy - whatever the term, an
illusion that has been seen before, especially by someone of his
caliber seems a little ludicrous. Would you expect Michaelangelo to
have painted a duplicate of the Mona Lisa?
And I am not bashing Copperfield, so please don't try and put that one
off on me. For the record, I think David has brought the art of magic
to it's highest level and he deserves everything he has ever gotten
from magic. But I know David personally, and if I seem to be saying
something negative, it is because I know what he is capable of.
Perhaps I put him on too high an pedestal, because when he does
something that I have to wonder about, I get annoyed because I know
that he can work sheer miracles with magic. So in that sense, I do
expect more from him than others. Besides, and all you guys can scream
if you feel like it, but I am a woman and these things matter.

Re: SHOOTING STAR
I recall, with a sense of almost mystical wonder, the
first time I witnessed a full stage magic show . It
was a school show, very likely someone famous (at least
to magicians), but I was too young at the time to
recall the name. This was BEFORE the age of seven,
before that first Mysto magic set. The only effect
that sticks in my memory is that of a girl being shot
from a cannon into a next of boxes. In my memory, I
can believe that actually I saw her fly into the boxes.
There was also a circus about that time which featured
two people being shot from a cannon and landing in a
net. As my faulty memory recalls, they first flew
through the air and landed in the net, as expected.
Then they climbed back into the cannon and were shot
out again. But this time, at the apex of their arc,
they vanished, or, rather, disintegrated into sparkle
dust. Whether this actually happened, or whether it is
something I merely dreamed as a child, I have no idea.
But I do recall the emotion of what I THOUGHT I saw,
the emotion of having seen real magic. It's something
akin to seeing your first shooting star. It is
something REAL, and you have just seen it happen before
your eyes. I am happy to report that I have
experienced this profound emotion once again, something
I honestly never thought would happen. Last night, at
Clowes Memorial Hall in Indianapolis, I saw David
Copperfield fly. Never mind that 40 years of being "in
magic" told me that I was just watching a trick. David
made it look real, he made it look like the flying
dreams I used to have. The best moment for me was when
he swooped low, inches off the floor, in what seemed
like perfect control over gravity. It was real.
Heartiest congratulations to David and to John Gaughan
for creating such a truly emotional moment.
I had planned to post a complete review of the show,
but Bill Larsen just did this admirably in the current
GENII. Last night's show stuck closely to that
described by Bill. The only difference is that David
ended with the flying -- he didn't do the Twisted Girl
or vanishing motorcycle. I'm glad he didn't. Anything
else would have been anticlimactic. Of course, one
tends to think on method after a day of reflection. I
immediately looked up what I decided had to be the
method, indeed what Pete Biro called an old method.
But the more I am convinced that I know the basic
method, the more I am baffled by the details. Also, I
was sitting in the last row of the third balcony, well
above the top of the curtains, and the effect looked
perfect from that near bird's eye view. I realize that
many of you saw the show in L.A., and that the rest of
you can look forward to next month's TV special. But
if aren't from L.A., and the stage show is coming
anywhere near you, go see it. Don't pass this up. It
is unlikely that you will see anything else as magical
in your life.

An interesting example of the kind of thinking you discuss has been
going on in England for a while; there is a very non-trad series called
THE SECRET CABARET (recently discussed in Allen's MAGIC), which has
come in for a lot of criticism from some of the more conservative
elements of the magic community. One of the problems with magic is
that in many ways it seems completely separate from the rest of show
business -- as though the only performers the magicians have ever seen
are other magicians who haven't changed their acts in thirty years. A
popular perception of magic is as old-fashioned and hokey;
unfortunately, it is fairly often accurate.

Re: STACEY IN 25 WORDS OR LES
Well, to begin with, I started magic when I was hospitalized from a
motorcycle accident. I was involved with Copperfield's Project Magic
and just fell in love with magic and wanted to learn everything I
possibly could. Later I met David and started writing his fan club
newsletter and articles on Project Magic. I also started teaching
magic to drug and alcohol abusive teens and runaways at the local
runaway shelter. For that I was awarded Volunteer of the Year from the
city of Alexandria, VA. You may have heard of the teddy bears the
police use? Well, instead of teddy bears, the teens had me and I would
be called to go to the detention center, talk to the kids and my magic
kit went wherever I did. Magic made a wonderful icebreaker for me.
One of the teens, Frank, had been beaten repeatedly and thrown out on
the street. He came after me with a switchblade the first time I met
him. Terrified, I pulled out my color changing knives and said "Well,
watch what I can do with MY knife!" He was immediately hooked on magic
AND me. I am happy to report that Frank was adopted by a wonderful
family - mine! He is now my son.
Otherwise, I am a professional travel agent and have been for 10 years.
I just started a new service, the Magicians Travel Network that deals
exclusively with magicians and their travel needs. I do not hesitate
to say that I go above and beyond the call of duty to give personal
attention to every one of my members and make sure that every last
detail is taken care of. It is my goal to provide the best service
available in the travel industry, maily because I have seen so many of
my fellow magi dicked around by some low life who doesn't care that
they are magicians and doesn't realize just how special they are.
Well, I know how I like to be treated and that is exactly how I treat
people.
Last but not least I have two little girls, ages 7 and 2. Both are
avid magic fans. My 7 year old wants to be a body guard for Sigfried
and Roy. Don't laugh! She is a green belt in karate and the kid can
knock you into the dirt without thinking about it twice.
And that's Stacey in a nutshell. Still crazy after all these years,
still totally in love with magic and learning new effects, and still
loving life. Oh yes, I also write. I am a freelance writer with a
B.A. in Journalism. I had to do something for kicks!

T. A.,
I have been performing music for years, and can state, without
fear of error, that most places that a young performer can hope
to get booked in are looking for songs that everyone knows. When
I play a bar or nightclub, the manager wants songs that people
can sing along with, or dance to, or move them. Familiarity is
the key.
This does not mean that a performer has to do the song exactly
the way the person who made it popular does. Much like magic,
the performer is able to make that song (and the introduction to
it) his or her own.
I write a high percentage of my own material. This is often a

A couple of funny stories relating to magic are here for your
enjoyment.
#1- Last time I went on-line to magic, someone had left a message about
Micheal Ammar's Icebreaker's video. The message reviewed it, then made
a joke about Micheal teaching how to make money in real estate, with
him being Micheal Del Dotto. Well, at my most recent SAM meeting, which
meets in a hotel, right next to us was the Dave Del Dotto "wealth
building" seminar! Do we have a prophet on-line?
#2- This one takes plac the week after David Copperfield's "Orient
Express" special. Steve Youell (a local close-up artists) and I were at
the local magic shop. Steve was working behind the counter. A couple
came into the store, and mentioned that their son had an interest in
magic, spurred the recent Copperfield special, and wanted a simple
trick to start him on the road. To show the lengths one can goto in
magic, Steve performed an excellent sleight-of-hand routine. The
couple's reaction? "Let's get him that deck!". Steve, just sell, don't
perform!

Re: SHOOTING STAR
Jerry,
Yes, D.C. used the film clips of early flight as an
introduction to his flying routine. While I'm certain
he had to do so to set up the illusion, I also happened
to love these particular clips. I've seen a lot of
such clips over the years, and they are always very
funny, but I've never seen these before. The fat lady
with the wings -- hysterical.
As to the rest of the show, I wasn't particularly upset
seeing D.C. do "Interlude," partly because I assume
David works these things out with the parties involved,
and partly because I like seeing how one pro re-
interprets an effect. (As Bill Larsen pointed out, he
also did Andre Kole material, and Doug Henning
material, etc. But the fire and water illusion, for
example, has come a LONG way since Doug did it.) On a
slightly philosophical note, I couldn't help but feel
that Doug Henning would have LOVED to have done the
flying illusion. If he had stayed in the business,
Gaughan might have offered it to him. Re duplication,
I agree with T.A. Waters in general, that it would be
nice if everyone did something different (as there IS
plenty of material), yet it was Steinmeyer himself who
pointed out last year that magicians are bothered by
duplication far more than lay audiences. A layman,
according to Steinmeyer, will see someone bring out a
Zig Zag, and will nudge the guy sitting beside him, and
will say, "Watch this. This is a great trick." The
recognition factor works in the trick's favor. Of
course, there IS a limit, a point of diminishing
returns.

Re: SHOOTING STAR
Stacey,
I assume that it was inadvertent that you addressed
your comments re Joe Stevens to me, but I DO agree that
it was insensitive of Joe to word his ads as he did.
But Joe is a nice guy, and I'm sure if you let him know
(or let his wife and daughter know!) that the ladies
were slighted in the ad, that he will correct it next
year. It is a tricky thing to word, and you might have
more luck if you compose a suitable alternative. Now,
if you want to REALLY drive the point home, I will be
attending the DMS this year. If you would like to
"accompany" me and get in for $75, feel free to use my
name. ("Grin," as Bill Wells always says.)
I must confess that I fell into the chauvinistic trap
of assuming you were male for your first few messages,
until you mentioned D.C.'s back side, and suddenly I
was backspacing to see who wrote that. You got my
attention.
I struggled with this gender thing in my current magic
book (plug plug), finally deciding to use male
pronouns, but apologizing at the top of the book for
doing so, and also making the case that my use of male
pronouns fit in with the theme of the book.
Anyway, it is clear that female magicians are here to
stay (and happily so!), not only in the Melinda and
Princess Tenko categories, but in comedy magic and
closeup and mentalism as well. So hang in there, and
feel free to point out to any of us when we are being
stupid. Which, of course, is probably most of the
time.

Re: SHOOTING STAR
I am not Joe Stevens, nor am I prepared to defend either the way the
item is worded or the meaning of it. But I believe that there has, in
fact, been no discrimination against either women who bring male or
female assistants nor against any mage (gay or not) who legitimately
desired to bring a male assistant or spouse. I think that the policy
is designed to avoid two magicians from buddying up to save $50. No,
I do not know if two males would have to bring proof of their
relationship (perhaps a marriage certificate from San Francisco?) in
order to get the reduced "assistant" rate.
What I do know is that Nathan has been denied entrance, on the basis of
age, to the lectures and shows, even if he was willing to pay the full
registration fee. I can completely understand the desire to keep
screaming or ill-behaved or non-mage persons of any age out, but, as
you know, he is quite serious about his magic and has attended several
Vegas shows (as well as Copperfield's road show) without being any sort
of problem.

have been self-serving. Though I think they are true,

problem with lecturers. They preach originality, then
teach stuff and sell stuff to the masses. Do they want

bought Jon Racherbaumer's PASTICHE, in which he claims

advice is that you call and speak to Joe or Martha or
Amy at (316) 683-9582. If you are coming for one day
only -- and I know that several did so last year -- Joe
might have a one-day rate that is better than the full

We had a discussion on the films being a bit slapstick and not of
the same calibre of the flying itself. I thought a few of the more
sucessful attempts, perhaps hang gliders or sky-divers to put the
lead-in on a more positive note.
.
Concerning copying and magi's doing the same thing. When I saw DC
do the penetration, my reaction was he did the Pendragon effect quite
well. It was still there's, just done by some one else. It's like
a pop song done by someone other than originator.
.
I also agree the ones most concerned with copying are the magicians
themselves. The lay audience couldn't care less.
.
Buying an effect from the originator and performing is valid. Ripping
it off is not. There are a number of cheaper copies available that
are an affront to all in magic.

Performing another's unpublished work is blatent theft. Performing
a person's published material is valid. Why so many people do the
stuff is one of life's mysteries !

Jim Sisti, here online once in awhile, publishes a KILLER magazine
strictly on Restaurant Magic. I don't know the LA area anymore,
hope some others can enlighten you. Good luck...

However, if you are good enough at impromptu type close up magic
why not just jump in, find a place and INVENT your own personal
brand of Restaurant Magic... that way it will REALLY BE YOU....

Joe is anything but SEXIST... his daughter Amy (I think this year
too) picketed the Miss USA pageant in Wichita... JOE IS AWARE OF
THE PROBLEM, BUT WAS TRYING TO WORD IT RIGHT... and Amy usually
does the ad copy herself... Why don't you write a freindly note
to Joe and Amy and let them know your feelings. Maybe freindly
would be better than freindly!

Re: MY NOTEBOOK
I have seen the first bunch of the new shows; I think they are
generally quite good. My only criticism would be that sometimes they
get a little too consciously arty -- but then at other times they do
total gross-out, so it is a nice balance. Actually, what I like best
about them is the concept they sell that magic isn't necessarily "nice"
and "safe" entertainment.
